회복된 소망

태양이 동쪽에서 뜹니까? 하늘은 푸릅니까? 바닷물은 짭니까? 코발트의 원자량은 58.9입니까? 물론, 마지막 질문의 답은 과학 척척박사나 일반상식 퀴즈에 빠진 사람이나 알 수 있겠지만 다른 문제들의 답은 아주 분명합니다. ‘예’라는 것이지요. 사실 이런 종류의 질문들에는 보통 약간의 빈정거림이 묻어 있습니다.

우리가 조심하지 않으면 때로는 몹시 피곤해진 이 시대의 귀에는 예수님이 병자 에게 하신 “네가 낫고자 하느냐”(요한복음 5:6) 라는 질문도 약간 빈정거리는 말로 들릴 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 그가 이렇게 대답해도 당연해 보입니다. “지금 농담하세요?! 지난 38년 동안 계속 도움을 구하고 있었는데요!” 그러나 이 질문에 빈정거림은 없었고, 그것은 아주 분명합니다. 예수님의 음성은 늘 연민 으로 차 있으며 언제나 우리의 유익을 위해 질문하십니다.

예수님은 그 사람이 낫기를 원한다는 것을 잘 알고 계셨습니다. 그리고 그 병자가 누군가의 도움을 받은 지도 오래되었다는 것도 아셨습니다. 하나님의 기적을 베푸시기 전에 예수님은 차갑게 식어버린 그의 소망을 회복시키려 하셨습니다. 주님은 짐짓 당연해 보이는 질문을 하셨고 “일어나 네 자리를 들고 걸어가라”(8절)고 말씀하심으로 병자가 반응할 길을 주셨습니다. 우리도 그 병자처럼 각자 소망이 시들은 삶의 여지들을 지니고 있습니다. 주님은 우리를 바라보시며 다시 소망을 가지고 주님을 믿으라고 연민의 마음으로 우리를 권하십니다.

다시 갈망한다는 것도 아십니다. 주님을 믿음으로써 생겨난 소망,
그 소망의 기쁨을 제게 회복시켜 주소서.

Hope Restored

Does the sun rise in the east? Is the sky blue? Is the ocean salty? Is the atomic weight of cobalt 58.9? Okay, that last one you might only know if you’re a science geek or tend to dabble in trivia, but the other questions have an obvious answer: Yes. In fact, questions like these are usually mixed with a hint of sarcasm.

If we’re not careful, our modern—sometimes jaded—ears can hear a bit of sarcasm in Jesus’s question to an invalid: “Do you want to get well?” (John 5:6). The obvious answer would seem to be, “Are you kidding me?! I’ve been wanting help for thirty-eight years!” But there’s no sarcasm present, that’s the furthest thing from the truth. Jesus’s voice is always filled with compassion, and His questions are always posed for our good.

Jesus knew the man wanted to get well. He also knew it had probably been a long time since anyone had made an offer to care. Before the divine miracle, Jesus’s intent was to restore in him a hope that had grown cold. He did this by asking a rather obvious question, and then giving ways to respond: “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk” (v. 8). We’re like the invalid, each of us with places in our lives where hope has withered. He sees us and compassionately invites us to believe in hope again, to believe in Him.

하나님, 거기 계세요?

마이클은 그의 아내가 불치병에 걸렸을 때 하나님과의 관계를 통해 그가 누렸던 평강을 아내도 누리기를 간절히 바랐습니다. 그는 아내와 믿음을 나눴지만 아내는 관심이 없었습니다. 어느 날 동네 서점에 들른 마이클에게 ‘하나님, 거기 계세요?’라는 책 제목이 눈에 들어왔습니다. 아내가 그 책을 보고 어떻게 반응할지 몰라 그는 몇 번이나 서점을 들락날락 하다가 결국 그 책을 샀습니다. 놀랍게도 아내는 그 책을 받아들였습니다.

아내는 그 책에 감동했고 성경도 읽기 시작했습니다. 2주 후 마이클의 아내는 하나님 안에서 평강을 누리며 하나님이 결코 떠나거나 버리지 않을 것이라는 확신 가운데 이 세상을 떠났습니다.

하나님이 모세를 불러 이스라엘 백성을 애굽에서 인도해내라고 하셨을 때 모세에게 능력을 주겠다고 약속하지 않으시고 대신 그와 함께 하겠다고 약속하셨습니다. “내가 반드시 너와 함께 있으리라”(출애굽기 3:12). 예수님도 십자가에 달리시기 전 제자들에게 하셨던 마지막 말씀에서 하나님이 영원히 함께 하신다고 약속하셨는데, 그것은 곧 제자들이 성령을 통해 받게 될 선물이었습니다 (요한복음 15:26).

하나님은 우리가 어려움을 당할 때 물질의 도움이나 치유, 혹은 문제의 즉각적인 해결 등, 많은 일들로 우리를 도와주실 수 있습니다. 그리고 가끔은 그렇게 해주십니다. 그러나 하나님이 주시는 가장 좋은 선물은 그분 자신입니다. 이것은 우리에게 최고의 위로가 되는 사실입니다. 삶에 어떤 일이 일어나도 주님은 우리와 함께하시며 결코
우리를 떠나거나 버리지 않으십니다.

Are You There?

When his wife contracted a terminal illness, Michael longed for her to experience the peace he had through his relationship with God. He had shared his faith with her, but she wasn’t interested. One day, as he walked through a local bookstore, a title caught his eye: God, Are You There? Unsure how his wife would respond to the book, he walked in and out of the store several times before finally buying it. To his surprise, she accepted it.

The book touched her, and she began to read the Bible too. Two weeks later, Michael’s wife passed away—at peace with God and resting in the assurance that He would never leave or forsake her.

When God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, He didn’t promise him power. Instead, He promised His presence: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). In Jesus’s last words to His disciples before His crucifixion, He also promised God’s eternal presence, which they would receive through the Holy Spirit (John 15:26).

There are many things God could give us to help us through life’s challenges, such as material comfort, healing, or immediate solutions to our problems. Sometimes He does. But the best gift He gives is Himself. This is the greatest comfort we have: whatever happens in life, He will be with us; He will never leave nor forsake us.

완전히 태워짐

오스 기니스는 그의 책 ‘소명’에서 윈스턴 처칠이 프랑스 남부에 있는 친구 집에서 추운 휴일 저녁에 벽난로 가에 앉아 불을 쬐던 때를 묘사하고 있습니다. 벽난로 불꽃을 바라보며 처칠 전 수상은 소나무 장작들이 “탁탁, 쉬익 하는 소리를 내며 타오르는 것을 보았습니다. 그러곤 불쑥 ‘장작들이 왜 탁탁 소리를 내는지 알겠어. 완전히 소모된다는 것이 무엇인지 나는 알아.’ 라고 특유의 우렁찬 목소리로 말했습니다.”

환난과 절망, 위험, 좌절, 그리고 우리의 잘못의 결과 등, 그것들 모두 다 우리를 완전히 태워버리는 것처럼 느껴집니다. 우리를 둘러싼 환경도 서서히 우리 마음 에서 기쁨과 평안을 빼앗아갑니다. 다윗은 자신이 택한 악한 일들로 인해 타는 듯한 고통의 대가를 경험한 후, “내가 입을 열지 아니할 때에 종일 신음하므로 내 뼈가 쇠하였도다...... 내 진액이 빠져서 여름 가뭄에 마름 같이 되었나이다”(시편 32:3-4)라고 기록하였습니다.

그렇게 힘든 때에 우리는 어디서 도움과 소망을 구할 수 있을까요? 사역의 부담과 관계의 아픔을 많이 경험했던 바울은 “우리가 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도 싸이지 아니하며 답답한 일을 당하여도 낙심하지 아니하며 박해를 받아도 버린바 되지 아니하며 거꾸러뜨림을 당하여도 망하지 아니하고”(고린도후서 4:8-9)라고 고백하고 있습니다.

그것이 어떻게 가능할까요? 우리가 예수님 안에서 안식할 때, 선한 목자이신 주님께서 우리의 영혼을 소생시키시고(시편 23:3), 우리 여정의 다음 단계로 나아갈 힘을 주십니다. 주님은 삶의 모든 여정을 우리와 함께 하시겠다고 약속하십니다(히브리서 13:5).

Being Consumed

In his book The Call, Os Guinness describes a moment when Winston Churchill, on holiday with friends in the south of France, sat by the fireplace to warm himself on a cold night. Gazing at the fire, the former prime minister saw pine logs “crackling, hissing, and spitting as they burned. Suddenly, his familiar voice growled, ‘I know why logs spit. I know what it is to be consumed.’”

Difficulties, despair, dangers, distress, and the results of our own wrongdoings can all feel consuming. Circumstances slowly drain our hearts of joy and peace. When David experienced the consuming consequences of his own sinful choices, he wrote, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. . . . My strength was sapped as in the heat of summer” (Psalm 32:3–4).

In such difficult times, where do we turn for help? For hope? Paul, whose experiences were filled with ministry burdens and brokenness, wrote, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8–9).

How does that work? As we rest in Jesus, the Good Shepherd restores our souls (Psalm 23:3) and strengthens us for the next step of our journey. He promises to walk that journey with us every step of the way (Hebrews 13:5).

평강이 가득한 마음

제리 크레이머는 프로선수 생활을 마친 후 45년 동안 명예의 전당(선수에게는 최고의 영광)에 가입하지 못했습니다. 그는 많은 명예와 성취를 이루었지만 명예의 전당만큼은 그를 비켜 갔습니다. 그는 열 번이나 후보에 올랐지만 한 번도 수여받지 못했습니다. 번번이 그의 소망은 좌절되었는데 그럼에도 크레이머는 “미식축구연맹은 내 생애에 백 번이나 상을 주었는데, 단 하나 이 상을 받지 못했다고 화를 내는 것은 어리석은 일이다!”라며 감사를 표했습니다.

그렇게 여러 번 다른 선수들에게 상이 돌아가고 자기는 받지 못했다면, 다른 사람이라면 화를 낼 법도 한데 크레이머는 그렇지 않았습니다. 이런 그의 태도는 “뼈를 썩게 하는”(잠언 14:30) 부식성이 강한 질투심으로부터 우리의 마음을 어떻게 지킬 수 있는지 보여줍니다. 갖지 못한 것에 사로잡혀 가진 것을 인식하지 못할 때 하나님의 평강은 우리를 비켜갈 것입니다.

후보에 오른 지 열 한 번만에 제리 크레이머는 2018년 2월 드디어 미식축구 명예의 전당에 이름을 올리게 되었습니다. 크레이머의 소망은 마침내 이루어졌지만 이 땅에서의 우리의 소망은 꼭 이루어지지 않을 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님이 이미 우리에게 열어주신 많은 것에 시선을 둘 때 우리는 “평강의 마음”을 가질 수 있습니다. 우리가 원했지만 얻지 못한 것이 무엇이든, 우리는 주님께서 우리 삶에 가져다주시는 생명력 넘치는 평강을 언제나 누릴 수 있습니다.

Peace-Filled Hearts

For forty-five years after his career as a professional athlete ended, Jerry Kramer wasn’t inducted into his sport’s hall of fame (the highest recognition). He enjoyed many other honors and achievements, but this one eluded him. Although he’d been nominated for the honor ten times, it had never been bestowed. Despite having his hopes dashed so many times, Kramer was gracious, saying, “I felt like [the National Football League] had given me 100 presents in my lifetime and to be upset or angry about one I didn’t get was kind of stupid!”

Where others might have grown bitter after being denied so many times in favor of other players, Kramer wasn’t. His attitude illustrates the way we can safeguard our hearts against the corrosive nature of envy, which “rots the bones” (Proverbs 14:30). When we become preoccupied with what we don’t have—and fail to recognize the many things we do—the peace of God will elude us.

After an eleventh nomination, Jerry Kramer ultimately was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in February 2018. Our earthly desires may not be fulfilled as his finally were. Yet we can all have a “heart at peace” when we instead focus our attention on the many ways God has been generous toward us. No matter what we want but do not have, we can always enjoy the life-giving peace He brings to our lives.

골짜기를 지나

우해(가명)는 국경을 넘어 중국으로 가려다 붙잡혀 북한의 노동교화소에 수감되었습니다. 그녀는 증언하기를 잔인한 간수들에 의한 고문과 등골이 빠지는 노동, 쥐와 이가 들끓는 냉골 바닥에서의 부족한 수면 등이 밤낮으로 이어졌다고 했습니다. 그렇지만 하나님은 죄수들 중에서 믿음을 나눌 친구들을 그녀에게 주시고 매일 그녀를 도와주셨습니다.

노동교화소에서 석방된 후 한국에 살게 되면서 우는 수감됐던 시기를 회상하면서 시편 23편이 그녀의 경험을 요약해준다고 말했습니다. 그녀는 어두운 골짜기에 갇혀있었지만 예수님이 평화를 주시는 목자가 되어주셨습니다. “나는 말 그대로 죽음의 그림자로 가득 찬 골짜기에 있다고 느꼈지만 그 무엇도 두렵지 않았습니다. 하나님께서 나를 날마다 위로해주셨습니다.” 하나님이 그녀가 그분의 사랑하는 딸이라고 안심시켜주셨기 때문에 그녀는 하나님의 선하심과 사랑을 경험할 수 있었습니다. “나는 처참한 곳에 있었지만 하나님의 선하심과 사랑을 경험할 것을 알았습니다.” 또한 그녀는 주님의 임재 안에 영원히 거할 것이라는 것도 알았습니다.

우의 이야기는 우리를 격려해줍니다. 그녀는 비참한 환경에서도 하나님의 사랑과 인도하심을 느꼈으며 하나님께서 그녀를 붙드시고 두려움을 없애주셨습니다. 우리가 예수님을 따르면 그분은 고난의 시간을 지날 때 우리를 친절히 인도해주실 것입니다. “[우리가] 여호와의 집에 영원히 살 것”(23:6)이기 때문에 우리는 두려워할 필요가 없습니다.

Through the Valley

Hae Woo (not her real name) was imprisoned in a North Korean labor camp for crossing the border into China. The days and nights were torture, she said, with brutal guards, backbreaking work, and little sleep on an ice-cold floor with rats and lice. But God helped her daily, including showing her which prisoners to befriend and share her faith with.

After she was released from the camp and living in South Korea, Woo reflected on her time of imprisonment, saying that Psalm 23 summed up her experience. Although she’d been trapped in a dark valley, Jesus was her Shepherd who gave her peace: “Even though it felt as if I was literally in a valley full of the shadow of death, I wasn’t afraid of anything. God comforted me every day.” She experienced God’s goodness and love as He reassured her that she was His beloved daughter. “I was in a terrible place, but I knew . . . I would experience God’s goodness and love.” And she knew she’d stay in the Lord’s presence forever.

We can find encouragement in Woo’s story. Despite her dire circumstances, she felt God’s love and leading; and He sustained her and took away her fear. If we follow Jesus, He will lead us gently through our times of trouble. We need not fear, for “[we] will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (23:6).

좋은 소식 전하기

이란 학생 아르만이 내게 “이름이 뭐예요?” 하고 물었습니다. 내가 에스테라라고 대답하자 그는 얼굴이 환해지며 “페르시아어에도 비슷한 이름이 있어요. 세타르(별)라는 말이에요!”라고 소리쳤습니다. 이 짧은 교제로 인해 놀라운 대화가 시작되었습니다. 나는 내 이름이 페르시아(현재 이란)의 왕비였던 유대인 “에스더”라는 성경 인물에서 따온 것이라고 그에게 말해주면서, 에스더의 이야기로 시작해서 예수님의 복음을 전했습니다. 대화를 나눈 후 아르만은 그리스도에 대해 더 배우기 위해 매주 성경공부에 참석하기 시작했습니다.

예수님의 제자 중 하나인 빌립은 성령님에 이끌리어 마차를 타고 있던 에티오피아의 한 관리에게 다음 질문을 던져 대화의 불을 지폈습니다. “지금 읽으시는 것을 이해하십니까?”(사도행전 8:30, 새번역). 에티오피아 관리는 이사야서의 한 구절을 읽으며 영적인 의미를 찾고 있던 중이어서 빌립의 질문은 매우 시기 적절했습니다. 그는 빌립을 자신의 옆자리로 앉게 한 후 겸손히 그의 말을 경청했습니다. 놀라운 기회인 것을 알게 된 빌립은 “그 성경 말씀에서부터 시작하여 예수님에 대한 기쁜 소식을 자세히 설명해주었습니다”(35절, 현대인의 성경).

빌립처럼 우리에게도 전해줄 기쁜 소식이 있습니다. 직장에서, 식료품가게에서, 혹은 이웃 관계에서 접하게 되는 이런 기회들을 매일 붙잡으시기 바랍니다. 성령께서 우리 걸음을 인도하셔서 예수님 안에 있는 소망과 기쁨을 말로 나눌 수 있게 하시도록 그분께 우리를 맡길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Good News to Tell

“What’s your name?” asked Arman, an Iranian student. After I told him my name is Estera, his face lit up as he exclaimed, “We have a similar name in Farsi, it’s Setare!” That small connection opened up an amazing conversation. I told him I was named after a Bible character, “Esther,” a Jewish queen in Persia (present-day Iran). Starting with her story, I shared the good news of Jesus. As a result of our conversation, Arman started attending a weekly Bible study to learn more about Christ.

One of Jesus’s followers, Philip, guided by the Holy Spirit, asked a question that ignited a conversation with an Ethiopian official traveling in his chariot: “Do you understand what you are reading?” (Acts 8:30). The Ethiopian man was reading a passage from the book of Isaiah and seeking spiritual insight. So Philip’s question came at the right time. He invited Philip to sit next to him and in humility listened. Philip, realizing what an amazing opportunity this was, “began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus” (v. 35).

Like Philip, we too have good news to tell. Let’s seize the daily occasions we encounter in our workplace, at the grocery store, or in our neighborhood. May we allow the Holy Spirit to guide our steps and give us the words to share our hope and joy in Jesus.- Estera Pirosca Escobar

예상 밖의 승자

2018년 동계올림픽에서 완전히 말도 안 되는 마법과도 같았던 순간은 아마도 스노보드 세계챔피언인 체코의 에스더 레데카가 전혀 다른 종목인 스키에서 우승한 일일 것입니다!
게다가 26번째라는 불리한 순서에도 불구하고 최고의 자리인 금메달을 따냈습니다. 상식적으로 불가능해 보이는 성과였습니다.

놀랍게도 레데카는 활강과 회전을 결합시킨 스키 종목인 슈퍼대회전 경기에 출전 자격을 얻었습니다. 그녀는 남에게 빌린 스키를 타고 불과 0.01초 차이로 우승을 하고서, 정상급 스키 선수 중 한명이 우승할 것이라고 예상했던 방송 매체나 다른 참가자들만큼 자신도 크게 놀랐습니다.

세상 돌아가는 방식이 그렇습니다. 우리는 승자는 계속해서 이기고 나머지는 계속 질 거라고 가정합니다. 그래서 제자들은 “부자는 천국에 들어가기가 어려우니라”(마태복음 19:23) 는 예수님의 말씀을 듣고서 큰 충격을 받았습니다. 예수님은 모든 것을 뒤집으셨습니다. 부자(승자)인 것이 어떻게 장애가 되겠습니까? 그러나 분명한 것은 우리의 소유(능력, 지위)에 믿음을 두면 하나님을 믿기가 어려울 뿐더러 사실상 불가능합니다.

하나님의 나라는 우리 방식대로 되지 않습니다. 예수님은 “먼저 된 자로서 나중 되고 나중 된 자로서 먼저 될 자가 많으니라”(30절)고 말씀하십니다. 그리고 먼저 된 자든 나중 된 자든, 우리가 받는 모든 것은 하나님께서 자격 없는 우리에게 순전히 은혜로 베풀어주시는 것입니다.

Unexpected Winners

Perhaps the most preposterous, spellbinding moment in the 2018 Winter Olympics was when the Czech Republic’s world champion snowboarder Ester Ledecka won an event in a completely different sport: skiing! And she took the first-place gold medal even though she had the unenviable position of skiing 26th—a feat believed to be basically impossible.

Amazingly, Ledecka qualified to race the women’s super-G—an event that combines downhill skiing with a slalom course. After she won by .01 of a second on borrowed skis, she was just as shocked as the media and other contestants who had assumed the winner would be one of the top skiers.

This is how the world works. We assume the winners will keep winning while all the others will lose. It was a jolt, then, when the disciples heard Jesus say how “hard [it is] for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven” (MATTHEW 19:23). Jesus turned everything upside down. How could being rich (a winner ) offer a roadblock? Apparently, if we trust in what we have (what we can do, who we are), then it’s not only hard but actually impossible to trust God.

The kingdom of God doesn’t play by our rules. “Many who are first,” Jesus says, “will be last, and many who are last will be first” (V 30). And, whether you’re first or last, everything we receive is purely by grace—by God’s unmerited favor. - WINN COLLIER

바뀔 수 있다

어느 토요일 오후 우리 교회 청소년들이 모여서 빌립보서 2:3-4에 대해 상당히 심각한 질문들을 주고받고 있었습니다. “아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고 각각 자기 일을 돌볼뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보아 나의 기쁨을 충만하게 하라.” 몇몇 어려운 질문 중에 다음과 같은 것들도 있었습니다. ‘당신은 얼마나 자주 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보는가?
다른 사람이 당신을 겸손하다고 하는가, 아니면 교만하다고 하는가? 왜 그런가?’

쭉 들어보니 그들의 솔직한 대답이 무척이나 고무적이었습니다. 그곳에 모인 십대 아이들은 자신들의 단점을 찾아내는 것은 쉽지만 그 단점을 바꾸는 것, 혹은 바꾸려는 ‘의지를 갖는 것’은 어렵다는 사실에 모두 동의했습니다. 한 아이는 “나는 이기심을 타고났나 봐.” 하며 울먹이기도 했습니다.

다른 이들을 섬기기 위해 나 중심적인 것을 내려놓으려 하는 마음은 내 안에 사시는 예수님의 영을 통해서만 가능합니다. 바울이 빌립보 교회에게 하나님께서 그들을 위해 이전에 행하시고 가능케 하신 일들을 돌아볼 것을 권고한 것도 바로 그 때문이었습니다. 하나님은 그들을 은혜 가운데 받아들이셨고, 그분의 사랑으로 위로하셨으며, 성령님을 보내어 그들을 도와주셨습니다(빌립보서 2:1-2). 그러므로 그들이나 우리가 겸손함 이외에 그 무엇으로 그 같은 은혜에 반응할 수 있겠습니까?

그렇습니다. 하나님 때문에 우리가 바뀔 수 있고, 또 그분만이 우리를 바꾸실 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리로 하여금 “하나님을 기쁘게 해드릴 것을 염원하게 하시고 실천하게 하시기”(13절) 때문에 우리가 자신만을 생각하지 않고 다른 사람들을 겸손히 섬길 수 있는 것입니다.

Change Is Possible

One Saturday afternoon, some youth group members from my church gathered to ask one another some hard questions based on Philippians 2:3–4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Some of the difficult queries included: How often do you take an interest in others? Would someone describe you as humble or proud? Why?

As I listened, I was encouraged by their honest answers. The teenagers agreed that it’s easy to acknowledge our shortcomings, but it’s hard to change, or—for that matter—desire to change. As one teen lamented, “Selfishness is in my blood.”

The desire to let go of our focus on self to serve others is only possible through Jesus’s Spirit living in us. That’s why Paul reminded the Philippian church to reflect on what God had done and made possible for them. He had graciously adopted them, comforted them with His love, and given His Spirit to help them (Philippians 2:1–2). How could they—and we—respond to such grace with anything less than humility?

Yes, God is the reason for us to change, and only He can change us. Because He gives us “the desire and power to do what pleases him” (v.13 nlt), we can focus less on ourselves and humbly serve others.

견딜 수 없는 고통을 견뎌내기

21세기의 가장 큰 온라인 커뮤니티 중 하나인 ‘체험 프로젝트’ 는 한때 수천만 명의 사람들이 극심한 고통의 경험들을 서로 나누는 곳이었습니다. 가슴이 찢어지는 이야기들을 읽으며 나는 누군가가 우리의 고통을 알아주고 이해해주기를 우리가 얼마나 간절히 바라는지 생각해보았습니다.

창세기에 나오는 한 젊은 여종의 이야기를 통해 우리는 고통을 이해해 주는 것이 어떻게 생명을 살릴 수 있는지 볼 수 있습니다. 하갈은 이집트 왕 바로가 아브람에게 준 여종이었습니다(창세기 12:16; 16:1 참조). 아브람의 아내였던 사래가 임신하지 못하자 그녀는 옳지는 않았지만
당시의 풍습대로 아브람에게 하갈과 동침해서 아기를 가지라고 권했습니다. 그러나 하갈이 임신하고 나니 서로 간에 긴장이 표출되고 결국 하갈은 사래의 학대를 피해 광야로 도망갔습니다(16:1-6).

그러나 하갈이 임신한 상태로 거칠고 힘든 사막에 홀로 남겨져 곤경에 처한 모습은 하나님의 눈길에 바로 띄었습니다. 여호와의 사자가 와서 하갈을 격려한 후(7-12절), 그녀는 “나를 살피시는 하나님”(13절)이라고 선포하며 겉에 보이는 모습 너머를 꿰뚫어보시는 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 동일한 하나님의 모습이 “고생하며 기진하는 무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기시는” (마태복음 9:36) 예수님 안에 나타났습니다. 하갈은 자신을 이해해 주시는 하나님을 만난 것입니다.

하갈의 고통을 알고 ‘이해하신’ 그분은 우리의 고통 또한 알고 계십니다(히브리서 4:15-16). 하나님이 우리 마음을 알고 계신다는 것을 경험하면 견딜 수 없던 고통도 훨씬 더 참아낼 수 있게 됩니다.

Surviving the Unbearable

The Experience Project, one of the largest online communities of the twenty-first century, was once a site where tens of millions shared deeply painful firsthand experiences. As I read through the heartbreaking stories, I reflected on how desperately our hearts long for someone to see—to understand—our pain.

In Genesis, the story of a young handmaid reveals just how life-giving this gift can be. Hagar was a slave girl likely given to Abram by a pharaoh of Egypt (see Genesis 12:16; 16:1). When Abram’s wife Sarai was unable to conceive, she urged Abram to conceive a child with Hagar—a disturbing yet familiar practice of that day. But when Hagar became pregnant, tensions flared, until Hagar fled into the wilderness to escape Sarai’s abuse (16:1–6).

But Hagar’s predicament—pregnant and alone in a harsh, unforgiving desert—didn’t escape divine eyes. After a heavenly messenger encouraged Hagar (vv. 7–12), she declared, “You are the God who sees me” (v. 13). Hagar was praising One who sees more than the bare facts. The same God was revealed in Jesus, who, “when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless” (Matthew 9:36). Hagar encountered a God who understood.

The One who saw and understood Hagar’s pain sees ours as well (Hebrews 4:15–16). Experiencing heaven’s empathy can help the unbearable become a bit more bearable.

새로운 마음이 필요하세요?

정말 암담한 소식이었습니다. 아버지가 한 동안 계속 가슴에 통증이 있어 의사가 심장 정밀 검사를 받게 했는데 검사 결과 동맥 세 군데가 막혀 있었습니다.

세 군데 혈관 우회수술이 2월 14일로 잡혔는데 아버지는 내심 걱정하시면서도 그 날짜를 희망을 의미하는 날로 여기셨습니다. “밸런타인데이에 새 심장을 갖게 되겠네!” 정말 그렇게 되었습니다! 수술은 완벽하게 마쳤고 힘겨웠던 심장이 생명의 혈류로 인해 회복되면서 “새” 심장이 되었습니다.

아버지의 심장 수술을 보며 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 새로운 삶이 생각났습니다. 죄가 우리와 하나님을 이어주는 영적 “동맥” 을 가로막기 때문에 우리에게도 그것을 뚫을 영적인 “수술”이 필요합니다.

그것이 바로 에스겔 36장 26절에서 하나님이 그의 백성들에게 하신 약속입니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 “새 마음을 너희에게 주되 너희 육신에서 굳은 마음을 제거하고 부드러운 마음을 줄 것”이라고 확언해주셨습니다. 또한 “너희 모든 더러운 것에서 정결하게 할 것이며”(25절), “내 영을 너희 속에 둘 것”(27절)이라고 약속하셨습니다. 희망을 잃어버린 백성들에게 그들의 삶을 소생시키실 수 있는 하나님께서 새로운 출발을 약속해주셨습니다.

그 약속은 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 마침내 성취되었습니다. 주님을 믿으면 우리의 죄와 절망을 깨끗이 씻어줄 영적인 새 심장을 얻게 됩니다. 그리스도의 영으로 충만한 우리의 새 심장은 하나님의 영적인 생명의 피로 고동치며 “우리로 또한 새 생명 가운데서 행하게” 해줍니다(로마서 6:4).

Need a New Heart?

The news was grim. My father had been having chest pains, so his doctor ordered a test to peer into his heart. The result? Blockage found in three arteries.

Triple-bypass surgery was scheduled for February 14. My dad, though anxious, saw that date as a hopeful sign: “I’m getting a new heart for Valentine’s Day!” And he did! The surgery went perfectly, restoring life-giving blood flow to his struggling heart—his “new” heart.

My father’s surgery reminded me that God offers us a new life as well. Because sin clogs our spiritual “arteries”—our capacity to connect with God—we need spiritual “surgery” to clear them.

That’s what God promised His people in Ezekiel 36:26. He assured the Israelites, “I will give you a new heart. . . . I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” He also promised, “I will cleanse you from all your impurities” (v. 25) and “put my Spirit in you” (v. 27). To a people who’d lost hope, God promised a fresh start as the One who could renew their lives.

That promise was ultimately fulfilled through Jesus’s death and resurrection. When we trust in Him, we receive a new spiritual heart, one that’s cleansed of our sin and despair. Filled with Christ’s Spirit, our new heart beats with the spiritual lifeblood of God, that “we too may live a new life” (Romans 6:4). - Adam Holz
