애비의 기도

고등학교 2학년 때 애비와 그녀의 엄마는 어느 청년에 관한 뉴스를 들었습니다. 그 청년은 비행기 사고로 아버지와 새어머니를 잃고 본인도 심하게 다쳤습니다. 두 모녀는 이 청년을 잘 몰랐지만 엄마가 “그 청년과 그의 가족을 위해
지금 기도하자.”라고 말했습니다. 그리고 그들은 함께 기도했습니다.

몇 년이 지난 어느 날 애비가 대학교 수업에 들어갔을 때 한 학생이 자기 옆에 자리가 있으니 앉으라고 했습니다. 오스틴 해치라는 이름의 학생이었는데, 바로 애비가 전에 기도해주었던 그 비행기 사고의 피해자 청년이었습니다. 곧 그들은 사귀게 되었고 2018년에 결혼했습니다.

애비는 결혼 직전에 가진 어느 인터뷰에서 “내가 미래의 남편을 위해 기도했다는 건 정말 생각도 못할 일이었지요.”라고 말했습니다. 우리가 기도할 때 개인적인 필요나 아주 잘 아는 사람들에게만 국한시키다보니 진정 다른 사람들을 위한 기도 시간을 갖기가 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 바울은 에베소 교인들에게 보낸 편지에서 “모든 기도와 간구를 하되 항상 성령 안에서 기도하고 이를 위하여 깨어 구하기를 항상 힘쓰며 여러 성도를 위하여 구하라”(에베소서 6:18)라고 말했습니다. 그리고 디모데전서 2장 1절은 높은 지위에 있는 사람들을 비롯한 “모든 사람을 위하여” 기도하라고 말하고 있습니다.

우리 함께 다른 사람들을 위해, 우리가 알지 못하는 사람들을 위해서도 기도합시다. 이것은 우리가 “짐을 서로 질”(갈라디아서 6:2) 수 있는 한 가지 방법입니다.

Abby’s Prayer

When Abby was a sophomore in high school, she and her mom heard a news story about a young man who’d been critically injured in a plane accident—an accident that took the lives of his father and stepmother. Although they didn’t know this person, Abby’s mom said, “We just need to pray for him and his family.” And they did.

Fast forward a few years, and one day Abby walked into a class at her university. A student offered her the seat next to him. That student was Austin Hatch, the plane crash victim Abby had prayed for. Soon they were dating, and in 2018 they were married.

“It’s crazy to think that I was praying for my future husband,” Abby said in an interview shortly before they were married. It can be easy to limit our prayers to our own personal needs and for those closest to us, without taking the time to pray for others. However, Paul, writing to the Christians at Ephesus, told them to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kind of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” (EPHESIANS 6:18). And 1 Timothy 2:1 tells us to pray “for all people,” including those in authority.

Let’s pray for others—even people we don’t know. It’s one of the ways we can “carry each other’s burdens” (GALATIANS 6:2). - DAVE BRANON

볼링 핀 쓰러뜨리기

내 친구 에린의 발목에 볼링 볼이 핀을 쓰러뜨리는 문신이 새겨져 있는 것을 보고는 호기심이 생겼습니다. 에린이 그 독특한 문신을 할 생각을 하게 된 것은 복음가수 사라 그로브의 노래 “핀 세우기”를 듣고 나서였습니다. 그 재치 있는 가사를 들어보면 사람들이 쓰러뜨리는 볼링 핀을 손으로 반복해서 다시 세워 놓는 것과 같이 때로는 무의미하게 느껴지는 반복되는 일상사에서도 기쁨을 찾으라고 합니다.

빨래, 요리. 잔디 깎는 일. 우리 삶은 이것들처럼 한 번 끝내고, 다시 해야 하고, 또 다시 해야 하는 일들로 가득 차 있는 것 같습니다. 이것은 새로운 문제가 아니라 예전부터 우리를 힘들게 해왔던 것으로 구약성경의 전도서에서도 다루고 있습니다. 전도서는 “이미 있던 것이 후에 다시 있겠고 이미 한 일을 후에 다시 할”(1:9) 것이기 때문에 끊임없이 반복되는 매일의 삶은 쓸데없으며(1:2-3) 무의미하기까지 하다는 저자의 불평으로 시작하고 있습니다.

그러나 전도서 저자는 내 친구처럼 “하나님을 경외[숭배]하고 그의 명령을 지킬”(12:13) 때 우리의 궁극적인 성취가 이루어진다는 것을 기억함으로써 기쁨과 의미를 다시 찾을 수 있었습니다. 하나님은 일상적인 것과 삶의 평범해 보이는 것들까지도 귀하게 여기시고 우리가 그것들에 충실할 때 보답해주신다는 것을 알면 위로가 됩니다(14절).

우리가 계속 다시 세워야 할 “핀”들은 무엇입니까? 반복되는 일로 피곤하게 느껴지기 시작할 때에는 잠시 멈추어 일 하나 하나를 사랑의 예물로 하나님께 드리는 시간을 갖기 바랍니다.

Knocking Down Pins

I was intrigued when I noticed a tattoo of a bowling ball knocking down pins on my friend Erin’s ankle. Erin was inspired to get this unique tattoo after listening to Sara Groves’s song, “Setting Up the Pins.” The clever lyrics encourage listeners to find joy in the repetitive, routine tasks that sometimes feel as pointless as manually setting up bowling pins over and over again, only to have someone knock them down.

Laundry. Cooking. Mowing the lawn. Life seems full of tasks that, once completed, have to be done again—and again. This isn’t a new struggle but an old frustration, one wrestled with in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. The book opens with the writer complaining about the endless cycles of daily human life as futile (1:2–3), even meaningless, because “what has been will be again, what has been done will be done again” (V 9).

Yet, like my friend, the writer was able to regain a sense of joy and meaning by remembering our ultimate fulfillment comes as we “fear [reverence] God and keep his commandments” (12:13). There’s comfort in knowing that God values even the ordinary, seemingly mundane aspects of life and will reward our faithfulness (V 14).

What are the “pins” you’re continually setting up? In those times when repetitive tasks begin to feel tiring, may we take a moment to offer each task to God as an offering of love. - LISA SAMRA

기회를 놓치지 마세요

“아기들에게 달을 보여줄 기회를 절대 놓치지 마세요!”라고 웹 여사가 말했습니다. 주중 기도회가 시작되기 전에 우리들 몇몇이 전날 밤의 추석 보름달에 대해 이야기를 나누었습니다. 지평선 위에 걸려있는 것 같았던 그 보름달의 모습은 정말 장관이었습니다. 하나님의 위대한 창조를 예찬하는 백발의 웹 여사는 우리 대화 팀에서 가장 연장자였습니다. 그녀는 그 시간에 우리 부부가 두 아이를 집에 두고 온 것을 알고 있었으며, 우리가 아이들을 올바르게 훈련시키는 것을 도와주고 싶어 했습니다. ‘아기들에게 달을 보여줄 기회를 절대 놓치지 마세요!’

웹 여사는 아주 훌륭한 시편 기자가 될 수 있었을 것입니다. 그녀의 성품인 세심한 마음은 다윗이 천체를 묘사한 시편에 잘 나타나 있습니다. “언어도 없고......그의 소리가 온 땅에 통하고 그의 말씀이 세상 끝까지 이르도다”(시편 19:3-4). 시편 기자나 웹 여사에게는 달이나 별을 숭배하려는 의도는 전혀 없었고, 오히려 그 천체들 뒤에 있는 창조주의 손길을 경배하려는 것이었습니다. 궁창이나 하늘은 오직 하나님의 영광만을 드러내 보여주고 있습니다(1절).

우리도 어린 아이나 청소년에서 배우자, 이웃에 이르기까지 주위 모든 사람들에게 잠시 멈추어 둘러보아 우리 주위의 모든 것이 하나님의 영광을 드러내어 선포하고 있는 것을 들어보라고 권면할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 손으로 빚으신 작품에 주목하면 결국 모든 보이는 것들 뒤에 계시는 놀라우신 하나님을 경배하게 됩니다. 절대로 기회를 놓치지 마십시오.

Don’t Miss the Chance

“Don’t ever miss the chance to show your babies the moon!” she said. Before our midweek prayer service began, a group of us talked about the previous night’s harvest moon. The full moon was striking, as it seemed to sit on the horizon. Mrs. Webb was the eldest voice in our conversation, a grayhaired lover of God’s grand creation. She knew my wife and I had two children in our home at the time, and she wanted to help me train them in a way worth going. Don’t ever miss the chance to show your babies the moon!

Mrs. Webb would’ve made a good psalmist. Her brand of attentiveness is reflected in David’s description of the heavenly bodies that “have no speech . . . . Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world” (PSALM 19:3–4). Neither the psalmist nor Mrs. Webb had any intention of worshiping the moon or the stars, but rather the creative hands behind them. The heavens and skies reveal nothing less than the glory of God (V 1).

We too can encourage those around us—from babies and teenagers to spouses and neighbors—to stop, look, and listen for declarations and proclamations of God’s glory are all around us. Drawing attention to the work of His hands in turn leads to worshiping the awesome God behind the whole show. Don’t ever miss the chance. - JOHN BLASE

사막에 피는 꽃

모하비 사막은 대부분의 사막과 마찬가지로 모래 언덕과 마른 협곡과 고원 지대 및 산으로 되어 있습니다. 그러나 미국의 생물학자 에드먼드 재거가 이 사막에는 매 2-3년마다 풍부한 비가 내려 그 결과 “엄청나게 많은 꽃이 피어 거의 모든 모래와 자갈 흙 바닥이 꽃으로 뒤덮이는 것”을 관찰했습니다. 하지만 이 사막의 야생화의 향연은 매년 있는 현상은 아닙니다. 연구가들이 확인한 바에 따르면 제 때에 메마른 땅이 폭우로 흠뻑 적셔지고 나서 햇볕으로 데워진 다음에라야 꽃들이 생기 넘치는 색깔로 사막을 뒤덮는다는 것입니다.

메마른 대지에도 생명을 가져다 주시는 하나님의 그런 모습을 보면 이사야 선지자가 떠오릅니다. 그는 온 세상에 임하는 하나님의 심판 메시지를 전하고 나서 용기를 주는 희망의 비전도 함께 전해주었습니다(이사야 35장). 선지자는 하나님께서 모든 것을 바로 세우실 미래에 대해 설명하면서, “광야와 메마른 땅이 기뻐하며, 사막이 백합화처럼 피어 즐거워할 것이다”(1절, 새번역) 라고 말했습니다. 또 그는 구원받은 하나님의 백성들이 하나님의 나라에 이르러 “노래하며 그들의 머리 위에 영영한 희락을 띠고 기쁨과 즐거움을 얻으리니 슬픔과 탄식이 사라지리로다”(10절)라고 선포했습니다.

하나님의 약속으로 우리의 영원한 미래가 보장되었기에, 가뭄이나 억수같은 폭우가 쏟아지는 인생의 계절 속에서도 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 그리고 그분의 사랑에 깊이 뿌리내림으로 우리는 제 때에 예수님이 다시 오셔서 모든 것을 바로 세우실 그날까지 주님을 닮아가는 꽃을 피우며 자라갈 수 있습니다.

Blooming in the Desert

The Mojave Desert includes the expected sand dunes, dry canyons, mesas, and mountains of most deserts. But American biologist Edmund Jaeger observed that every few years an abundance of rain results in “such a wealth of blossoms that almost every foot of sand or gravelly soil is hidden beneath a blanket of flowers.” The Mojave wildflower show isn’t a yearly phenomenon, though. Researchers confirm the dry earth needs to be soaked by storms and warmed by the sun, at just the right times, before blooms will cover the desert with vibrant colors.

This image of God bringing forth life despite the arid terrain reminds me of the prophet Isaiah. He shared an encouraging vison of hope after delivering God’s message of judgment on all nations (ISAIAH 35). Describing a future time when God will make all things right, the prophet said, “The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom” (V 1). He declared God’s rescued people will enter His kingdom “with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away” (V 10).

With our eternal future secured by God’s promises, we can trust Him through life’s seasons of drought and drenching storms. Deeply rooted in His love, we can grow, blooming into His likeness until, at just the right time, Jesus returns and sets all things right. - XOCHITL DIXON

보화 찾기

존과 메리가 개를 데리고 자기 집 주위를 걷다가 얼마 전에 내린 비에 씻겨 땅위에 조금 드러난 녹슨 깡통을 발견했습니다. 그것을 집에 가지고 와서 열어보았더니 그 안에 백년 이상 된 금화가 숨겨져 있었습니다! 두 부부는 그 자리에 다시 가서 일곱 개의 깡통을 더 찾아냈는데, 총 1,427 개의 금화가 들어있었습니다. 그 후 그들은 그 보화를 보호하려고 다른 곳에 다시 묻었습니다.

‘새들 리지 호드’라 불리는 이 은닉된 금화(천만 달러의 가치)는 이 분야에서는 미국 역사상 가장 큰 액수의 발견입니다. 이 이야기를 읽으며 예수님이 말씀하신 비유 하나가 바로 생각납니다. “천국은 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같으니 사람이 이를 발견한 후 숨겨두고 기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 밭을 사느니라”(마태복음 13:44).

감춰진 보화가 실제로 발견되는 일은 거의 없지만, 감추어놓은 보화 이야기는 아주 오랫동안 상상력을 계속 불러일으켰습니다. 그러나 예수님은 자신들의 죄를 자백하고 예수님을 영접하고 따르는 모든 사람들이 가질 수 있는 보화에 대해 말씀하시고 있는 것입니다 (요한복음 1:12).

그 보화는 우리에게서 결코 없어지지 않을 것입니다. 우리가 옛 삶을 떠나 하나님과 그분의 목적을 추구할 때 그분의 가치를 발견하게 됩니다. 하나님은 “그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 자비하심으로써 그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을”(에베소서 2:7) 통해 상상을 초월하는 보화를 주십니다. 그것은 하나님의 자녀로서의 새로운 삶과 이 땅에 사는 새로운 목적, 그리고 그분과 영원히 함께 하는 무한한 기쁨입니다.

Finding Treasure

John and Mary were walking their dog on their property when they stumbled on a rusty can partially unearthed by recent rains. They took the can home and opened it, discovering a cache of gold coins over a century old! The couple returned to the spot and located seven more cans containing 1,427 coins in all. Then they protected their treasure by reburying it elsewhere.

The cache of coins (valued at $10 million) is called the Saddle Ridge Hoard, the largest find of its kind in US history. The story is strikingly reminiscent of a parable Jesus told: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (MATTHEW 13:44).

Tales of buried treasure have captured imaginations for centuries, though such discoveries rarely happen. But Jesus tells of a treasure accessible to all who confess their sins and receive and follow Him (JOHN 1:12).

We’ll never come to an end of that treasure. As we leave our old lives and pursue God and His purposes, we encounter His worth. Through “the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” (EPHESIANS 2:7), God offers us treasure beyond imagination—new life as His sons and daughters, new purpose on earth, and the incomprehensible joy of eternity with Him. - JAMES BANKS

편히 쉴 수 있을까?

다넬은 치료가 무척 고통스러울 것을 각오하고 물리치료사 진료실로 들어갔습니다. 물리치료사는 다넬의 팔을 폈다 굽혔다 하고는 다친 이후로 몇 달 동안 해보지 못한 자세를 취하게 했습니다. 물리치료사는 매번 잠깐씩 불편한 자세를 취하게 한 다음에 부드럽게 “자, 이제 편히 쉬세요.”라고 했습니다. 나중에 다넬은 말했습니다. “치료받을 때마다 ‘자, 이제 편히 쉬세요.’라는 말을 적어도 50번은 들은 것 같습니다.”

다넬은 그 말을 생각해보면서 이후에 살아갈 때에도 그 말을 적용할 수 있겠다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그는 걱정하는 대신 좋으시고 신실하신 하나님 안에서 편히 쉴 수 있었습니다.

예수님은 죽음이 임박했을 때 제자들이 그 점을 깨달아야 한다는 것을 아셨습니다. 제자들이 격변을 겪고 박해를 받을 때가 다가오고 있었습니다. 예수님은 제자들을 격려하시려고 성령을 보내어 그들과 함께 거하게 하시고, 또 그들에게 예수님이 가르치신 모든 것을 생각나게 하시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 14:26). 그래서 이렇게 말씀하실 수 있었습니다. “나의 평안을 너희에게 주노라......너희는 마음에 근심하지도 말고 두려워하지도 말라”(27절).

우리의 매일의 삶 속에는 우리를 긴장시키는 일들이 많이 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 하나님의 영이 우리 안에 사시고, 주님이 우리에게 평안을 주신다는 것을 상기함으로써 하나님을 믿는 믿음 안에서 자라갈 수 있습니다. 우리가 주님의 능력을 의지할 때, “자, 이제 편히 쉬세요.”라고 했던 물리치료사의 말 속에서 주님의 음성을 들을 수 있습니다.

Can We Relax?

Darnell entered the physical therapist’s office knowing he would experience a lot of pain. The therapist stretched and bent his arm and held it in positions it hadn’t been in for months since his injury. After holding each uncomfortable position for a few seconds, she gently told him: “Okay, you can relax.” He said later, “I think I heard that at least fifty times in each therapy session: ‘Okay, you can relax.’ ”

Thinking of those words, Darnell realized they could apply to the rest of his life as well. He could relax in God’s goodness and faithfulness instead of worrying.

As Jesus neared His death, He knew His disciples would need to learn this. They’d soon face a time of upheaval and persecution. To encourage them, Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit to live with them and remind them of what He had taught (JOHN 14:26). And so He could say, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. . . . Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (V 27).

There’s plenty we could be uptight about in our everyday lives. But we can grow in our trust in God by reminding ourselves that His Spirit lives in us—and He offers us His peace. As we draw on His strength, we can hear Him in the therapist’s words: “Okay, you can relax.” - ANNE CETAS

잠 못 이루는 밤

나는 대학 시절 여름철을 콜로라도 주의 기막히게 아름다운 산 속에 있는 방문객을 위한 목장에서 일하며 보냈습니다. 그곳에서 일하는 사람들에게는 순번제로 “야간 경계” 임무가 주어졌는데, 방문객들이 밤에 잘 때 산불이 일어나지 않나 지켜보며 그들을 보호하기 위해서였습니다. 처음에는 고되고 달갑지 않았던 일이 나에게는 고요한 가운데 생각에 잠겨 하나님의 장엄한 임재 속에서 위안을 얻는 특별한 기회가 되었습니다.

다윗 왕도 하나님의 임재를 간절한 마음으로 열심히 구했습니다(시편 63:1). 잠자리에서도 그랬고 “밤새도록” 그렇게 하기도 했습니다(6절). 이 시편에서 우리는 다윗이 곤경에 처해 있음을 분명히 알 수 있습니다. 이 시편의 내용은 다윗이 그의 아들 압살롬의 반역으로 깊이 슬퍼하는 것을 보여주는 것일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 그 밤에 다윗은 “[하나님의] 날개 그늘”(7절), 곧 하나님의 능력과 임재 속에서 도움을 얻고 다시 회복되었습니다.

우리도 살아가면서 어떤 위기나 어려움들을 당하기도 하고, 밤을 지새우는 것이 결코 위안이 되지 않았을 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 우리 자신의 “압살롬”이 우리의 마음과 영혼을 무겁게 짓누르거나, 가족이나 직장, 금전 문제들이 우리를 편히 쉬지 못하게 괴롭힐 수도 있습니다. 만일 그렇다면 그 잠 못 이루는 순간들을 하나님께 부르짖으며 매달리는 기회로 여겨 그분의 사랑의 손길이 우리를 꼭 붙잡으시도록 하십시오(8절).

Night Watches

During my college days, my summers were spent working at a guest ranch in the stunningly beautiful mountains of Colorado. On a rotating basis, staff members were assigned “night watch” duty—to keep an eye out for forest fires in order to protect the guests as they slept. What initially seemed to be an exhausting and thankless task became a unique opportunity for me to be still, reflect, and find solace in the majesty of God’s presence.

King David earnestly sought and thirsted for the presence of God (PSALM 63:1), even from his bed and through the “watches of the night” (V 6). The psalm makes it clear David was troubled. It’s possible the words contained in it reflect his deep sadness over the rebellion of his son Absalom. Yet the night became a time for David to find help and restoration in the “shadow of [God’s] wings” (V 7)—in His power and presence.

Perhaps you’re dealing with some crisis or difficulty in your life, and the night watches have been anything but comforting. Perhaps your own “Absalom” weighs heavy on your heart and soul. Or other burdens of family, work, or finances plague your times of rest. If so, consider these sleepless moments to be opportunities to call out and cling to God—allowing His loving hand to uphold you (V 8). - EVAN MORGAN, GUEST AUTHOR

하나님 형상으로

한 젊은 여인이 자신의 아름다운 갈색 피부가 퇴색하기 시작하자 마치 자신의 “자아”가 사라지거나 잃어버리기라도 하는 것처럼 두려운 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 그녀는 스스로 “나의 반점들”이라고 하였던, 백반증세로 생긴 더 연해진 색의 피부 반점들을 진한 화장으로 가렸습니다. 백반은 피부에 색조를 주는 멜라닌 피부색소가 없어져서 생기는 증상입니다.

그러던 어느 날 그녀는 ‘왜 숨겨야 하지?’ 하고 자문하게 되었습니다. 그래서 자신을 있는 그대로 받아들이시는 하나님의 능력을 의지하며 화장을 진하게 하는 것을 중단했습니다. 곧 그녀는 자신의 이러한 자신감으로 사람들의 관심을 받기 시작했고, 마침내 세계적인 화장품 회사의 백반증세를 지닌 최초의 광고모델이 되었습니다.

“이건 정말 너무나 큰 축복이에요.”라고 한 텔레비전 뉴스 진행자에게 말하면서, 그녀는 자기의 믿음과 가족과 친구들 때문에 용기를 얻게 되었다고 말했습니다.

우리는 이 여인의 이야기에서 우리 한 사람 한 사람이 하나님의 형상대로 창조되었다는 것을 다시 생각하게 됩니다. “하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고”(창세기 1:27). 우리가 겉으로 어떻게 보이든 우리 모두는 하나님의 형상을 가진 자들입니다. 우리는 하나님이 창조하신 사람들로서 그분의 영광을 드러내고, 또 예수님을 믿는 자들로서 세상 속에서 그분을 대신 드러내도록 계속 변화 받고 있습니다.

In God’s Image

When her beautiful brown skin started losing its color, a young woman felt frightened, as if she were disappearing or losing her “self.” With heavy makeup, she covered up “my spots,” as she called them—patches of lighter skin caused by a condition called vitiligo. It’s a loss of skin pigment, melanin, which gives skin its tone.

Then one day, she asked herself: Why hide? Relying on God’s strength to accept herself, she stopped wearing heavy makeup. Soon she began gaining attention for her selfconfidence. Eventually she became the first spokesmodel with vitiligo for a global cosmetics brand.

“It’s such a blessing,” she told a TV news host, adding that her faith, family, and friends are the ways she finds encouragement.

This woman’s story invites us to remember that we each are created in God’s image. “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (GENESIS 1:27). No matter what we look like on the outside, all of us are image-bearers of God. As His created persons, we reflect His glory; and as believers in Jesus we are being transformed to represent Him in the world.

거울 속의 사물들

“가야만 해. 더 빨리.”1993년도 영화 ‘쥬라기 공원’의 대표적인 장면에서 제프 골드블럼이 배역을 맡은 이안 말콤 박사가 사납게 날뛰는 공룡 티라노사우루스를 피해 다른 두 사람과 함께 지프차를 타고 도망가면서 하는 말입니다. 운전자가 백미러를 보니 거기에 맹렬히 따라오는 파충류의 턱이 보였습니다. 그 턱 바로 밑 거울 면에는 “거울에 보이는 물체는 실제로는 더 가까울 수 있습니다.”라는 글귀가 쓰여 있었습니다.

이 장면에는 박진감에다 두려움을 더해주는 유머가 잘 배합되어 있습니다. 그런데 우리도 때때로 과거로부터의 이런 “괴물들”이 끊임없이 우리 뒤를 쫒아오는 것처럼 느낄 때가 있습니다. 우리가 우리 삶의 “거울”을 볼 때, 우리가 잘못했던 것들이 그 속에 불쑥 나타나서 우리는 죄책감과 수치심에 사로잡히기 쉽습니다.

바울 사도는 과거가 우리를 무력하게 만드는 위력을 지닐 수 있다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그는 여러 해 동안 그리스도와 전혀 상관없는 삶을 살면서 그리스도인들을 박해하기까지 했습니다 (빌립보서 3:1-9). 바울이 자신의 과거를 후회하는데서 그쳤다면 그는 분명 아무것도 할 수 없었을 것입니다.

그러나 바울은 그리스도와의 관계 속에서 발견한 아름다움과 능력으로 말미암아 자신의 옛 삶을 떨쳐버리지 않을 수 없었습니다 (8-9절). 그렇게 하여 자유롭게 된 그는 두려움과 후회에 사로잡혀 뒤돌아보지 않고 믿음으로 앞을 바라볼 수 있었습니다. “오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여......달려가노라”(13-14절).

그리스도 안에서 우리가 얻은 구원은 그분을 위해 살 수 있도록 우리를 자유롭게 해주었습니다. 우리가 계속 앞으로 나아갈 때, 이제 더 이상 “(우리) 거울 속에 비치는 것들”이 우리의 나아갈 방향을 결정하지 않도록 해야 합니다.

Objects in Mirror

“Must. Go. Faster.” That’s what Dr. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, says in an iconic scene from the 1993 movie Jurassic Park as he and two other characters flee in a Jeep from a rampaging tyrannosaurus. When the driver looks in the rearview mirror, he sees the raging reptile’s jaw—right above the words: “OBJECTS IN MIRROR MAY BE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR.”

The scene is a masterful combination of intensity and grim humor. But sometimes the “monsters” from our past feel like they’ll never stop pursuing us. We look in the “mirror” of our lives and see mistakes looming right there, threatening to consume us with guilt or shame.

The apostle Paul understood the past’s potentially paralyzing power. He’d spent years trying to live perfectly apart from Christ, and even persecuted Christ ians (PHILIPPIANS 3:1–9). Regret over his past could easily have crippled him.

But Paul found such beauty and power in his relationship with Christ that he was compelled to let go of his old life (VV 8–9). That freed him to look forward in faith instead of backward in fear or regret: “One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal” (VV 13–14).

Our redemption in Christ has freed us to live for Him. We don’t have to let those “objects in (our) mirror” dictate our direction as we continue forward. - ADAM HOLZ

당신을 위해 있습니다

세계의 다른 도시들처럼 파리 근교에도 사람들이 그 지역의 노숙자들을 도우러 오고 있습니다. 방수 부대 속에 옷가지들을 넣고 지정된 울타리에 걸어놓으면 노숙자들이 자기들 필요에 따라 가져갑니다. 그 부대에는 다음과 같은 꼬리표가 붙어 있습니다. “저는 길을 잃지 않았습니다. 저는 추울 때를 대비해 당신을 위해 있습니다.” 이러한 노력은 주거지가 없는 사람들을 따뜻하게 해줄 뿐만 아니라, 그 지역 사람들에게도 주변의 가난한 사람들을 돕는 일의 중요성을 가르쳐주고 있습니다.

성경은 가난한 사람들을 돌보는 것의 중요성을 강조하면서 그런 사람들에게 “아끼지 말라”고 지시하고 있습니다(신명기 15:11). 우리는 자칫하면 가난한 사람들의 어려움에 눈 감아버리고는 우리가 가진 것을 나누지 않고 단단히 붙잡고 싶어 합니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 우리 주위에 언제나 도움이 필요한 사람들이 있다는 것을 알고, 그렇기 때문에 “아끼는 마음”이 아니라 관대한 마음으로 그들을 대하라고 권유하십니다 (10절). 예수님도 우리가 가난한 사람들에게 주면 천국에서 없어지지 않는 보물을 받을 것이라고 말씀하십니다(누가복음 12:33).

하나님 외에 그 누구도 우리의 관대함을 알아주지 않을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 아낌없이 베풀 때, 우리 주위의 어려운 사람들의 필요를 채워줄 뿐 아니라 다른 이들에게 베푸는 우리를 위해 하나님께서 작정해 놓으신 기쁨 또한 누릴 수 있습니다. 주님, 우리가 눈을 뜨고 손을 펴서 주님께서 우리 삶 속에 데려다 주신 사람들의 필요를 베풀 수 있게 도와주소서!

Here for You

On the outskirts of Paris, as in other cities around the globe, people are coming to the aid of the homeless in their communities. Clothing, covered in waterproof bags, is hung on designated fences for those living on the streets to take according to their needs. The bags are labeled, “I’m not lost; I’m for you if you’re cold.” The effort not only warms those without shelter, but also teaches those in the community the importance of assisting the needy among them.

The Bible highlights the importance of caring for those who are poor, instructing us to be “openhanded” toward them (DEUTERONOMY 15:11). We might be tempted to avert our eyes to the plight of the poor, holding tightly to our resources instead of sharing them. Yet God challenges us to recognize that we will always be surrounded by those who have needs and therefore to respond to them with generosity, not a “grudging heart” (V 10). Jesus says that in giving to the poor we receive an enduring treasure in heaven (LUKE 12:33).

Our generosity may not be recognized by anyone other than God. Yet when we give freely, we not only meet the needs of those around us but we also experience the joy God intends for us in providing for others. Help us, Lord, to have open eyes and open hands to supply the needs of those You place in our paths!
