우리의 약점

앤 쉬프 밀러는 1999년에 90세로 세상을 떠났지만, 사실 1942년에 유산 후 생긴 패혈증이 어떤 치료로도 낫지 않아 거의 죽을 뻔했었습니다. 그때 같은 병원에 있던 어떤 환자가 놀라운 신약을 개발하고 있는 과학자를 알고 있다고 해서, 담당 의사는 앤이 그 약을 소량이라도 받을 수 있게 해달라고 정부에 강력히 요구했습니다. 놀랍게도 약을 투여한 지 하루도 되지 않아 앤의 체온이 정상으로 돌아왔습니다! 페니실린이 앤의 생명을 구한 것입니다.

모든 인류는 타락한 이후에 죄가 가져다준 영적인 황폐함을 겪고 있다가 (로마서 5:12) 오직 예수님의 죽음과 부활, 그리고 성령님의 능력으로 우리가 고침을 받을 수 있게 되었습니다(8:1-2). 성령님은 우리가 이 땅에서, 그리고 영원히 하나님과 함께 풍성한 삶을 누릴 수 있게 해주십니다(3-10절). “예수를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 이의 영이 너희 안에 거하시면 예수를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 이가 너희 안에 거하시는 그의 영으로 말미암아 너희 죽을 몸도 살리시리라” (11절).

우리의 죄성 때문에 생명이 시들어갈 때 구원의 근원 되시는 예수님을 바라보고 성령님의 능력으로 강건해지십시오(11-17절). “이와 같이 성령도 우리의 연약함을 도우시나니......이는 성령이 하나님의 뜻대로 성도를 위하여 간구하심이니라”(26-27절).

In Our Weakness

Although Anne Sheafe Miller died in 1999 at the age of 90, she nearly passed away in 1942 after developing septicemia following a miscarriage and all treatments proved to be unsuccessful. When a patient at the same hospital mentioned his connection to a scientist who’d been working on a new wonder drug, Anne’s doctor pressed the government to release a tiny amount for Anne. Within a day, her temperature was back to normal! Penicillin had saved Anne’s life.

Since the fall, all human beings have experienced a devastating spiritual condition brought about by sin (ROMANS 5:12). Only the death and resurrection of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit has made it possible for us to be healed (8:1–2). The Holy Spirit enables us to enjoy abundant life on earth and for eternity in the presence of God (VV 3–10). “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you” (V 11).

When your sinful nature threatens to drain the life out of you, look to the source of your salvation, Jesus, and be strengthened by the power of His Spirit (VV 11–17). “The Spirit helps us in our weakness” and “intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (VV 26–27). - RUTH O'REILLY-SMITH

악인 구원하기

만화책에 나오는 영웅은 변함없이 인기가 있습니다. 2017년 한 해에만 슈퍼 영웅이 나오는 여섯 편의 영화가 미국에서 40억 달러 이상의 흥행 수입을 올렸습니다. 그런데 왜 사람들이 대형 액션 영화들에 그렇게 빠져드는 것일까요?

그것은 아마도 그런 이야기들이 하나님의 위대한 이야기와 어느 정도 닮았기 때문일 것입니다. 하나님의 이야기에도 영웅과 악인, 구원 받아야 할 사람들, 그리고 흥미로운 액션이 많이 있습니다.

그 이야기에서 가장 강력한 악인은 우리 영혼의 적인 사탄입니다. 또한 “조무래기” 악당들도 많이 나옵니다. 예를 들어, 다니엘서의 느부갓네살 왕이 그중 하나인데, 그는 세계적으로 유명한 왕이었으며 자신의 거대한 신상에 엎드려 절하지 않는 사람은 누구나 죽이기로 작정하였습니다(다니엘 3:1-6). 세 명의 용감한 유대인 관리가 그것을 거부했을 때(12-18절) 하나님은 맹렬히 타는 풀무불에서 그들을 극적으로 구해주셨습니다(24-27절).

하지만 놀랍게도 우리는 이 악인의 마음이 바뀌기 시작하는 것을 봅니다. 이 극적인 광경을 보며 느부갓네살은 이렇게 반응합니다. “사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고의 하나님을 찬송할지로다”(28절).

그러고 나서 왕은 하나님께 반항하는 사람은 누구나 다 죽이겠다고 위협했습니다(29절). 하나님은 그의 도움을 필요로 하지 않으셨는데 왕은 그것을 아직 이해하지 못했던 것입니다. 느부갓네살 왕은 4장에서 하나님에 대해 더 많은 것을 알게 되지만, 이는 다른 이야기입니다.

느부갓네살을 통해 우리가 알 수 있는 것은 그가 단순히 악인이 아니라 영적인 여정을 걷고 있는 사람이라는 것입니다. 하나님의 구원 이야기에서 우리의 영웅이신 예수님은 우리 가운데 있는 악인들을 포함하여 구원이 필요한 모든 사람에게 다가가십니다.

Rescuing Villains

The comic book hero is as popular as ever. In 2017 alone, six superhero movies accounted for more than $4 billion (US) in box office sales. But why are people so drawn to big action flicks?

Maybe it’s because, in part, such stories resemble God’s Big Story. There’s a hero, a villain, a people in need of rescue, and plenty of riveting action.

In this story, the biggest villain is Satan, the enemy of our souls. But there are lots of “little” villains as well. In the book of Daniel, for example, one is Nebuchadnezzar, the king of much of the known world, who decided to kill anyone who didn’t worship his giant statue (DANIEL 3:1–6). When three courageous Jewish officials refused (VV 12–18), God dramatically rescued them from a blazing furnace (VV 24–27).

But in a surprising twist, we see this villain’s heart begin to change. In response to this spectacular event, Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego” (V 28).

But then he threatened to kill anyone who defied God (V 29), not yet understanding that God didn’t need his help. Nebuchadnezzar would learn more about God in chapter 4—but that’s another story.

What we see in Nebuchadnezzar isn’t just a villain, but someone on a spiritual journey. In God’s story of redemption, our hero, Jesus, reaches out to everyone needing rescue— including the villains among us. - TIM GUSTAFSON

막대기 그림의 교훈

내 친구, 아니, 사실은 상담자가 종이 위에 막대기 그림 하나를 그려 놓고 그 위에 “숨겨진” 자아라고 표시하였습니다. 그리고 그 그림 둘레에 약 반 인치(약 1.3 센티미터) 더 큰 외곽선을 그려놓고는 “드러난” 자아라고 표시하였습니다. 두 그림의 차이, 즉 숨겨진 자아와 드러난 자아의 차이가 우리가 어느 정도 진실한가를 보여줍니다.

나는 친구의 가르침을 잠시 생각해 보다가 궁금했습니다. ‘나는 사람들 앞에서나 나 혼자 있을 때 한결같은가? 나는 진실한 사람인가?’

바울은 고린도교회에 보낸 편지에서 사랑과 훈계를 잘 엮어가며 예수님처럼 되라고 가르쳤습니다. 바울은 그 편지(고린도후서)를 마무리하면서 글로는 담대하지만 직접 만나면 유약하다고 그의 진실성을 지적하는 비난자들에 관해 썼습니다(10:10). 그 비난자들은 자신들의 전문적인 웅변술을 써서 사람들에게서 돈을 취했습니다. 반면에 바울은 학문적으로 뛰어났음에도 말은 단순하고 알아듣기 쉽게 했습니다. 바울은 이전에 보낸 편지에서 “내 말과 내 전도함이 설득력 있는 지혜의 말로 하지 아니하고 다만 성령의 나타나심과 능력으로 하여”(고린도전서 2:4)라고 기록했습니다. 그리고 나중에 보낸 편지에서 그의 진실성을 밝히 보여주었습니다. “이런 사람들은 우리가 떠나 있을 때에 편지로 쓰는 말과 함께 있을 때에 행하는 일 사이에는 아무런 차이가 없다는 것을 알아야 합니다”(고린도후서 10:11, 새번역).

바울은 사람들 앞에서나 혼자 있을 때 한결같은 사람이라는 것을 보여주었습니다. 우리는 어떻습니까?

Stick-Figure Lesson

A friend of mine—okay, it was my counselor—drew a stick figure on a sheet of paper. She labeled this the “private” self. Then she drew an outline around the figure, about a half-inch larger, and named it the “public” self. The difference between the two figures, between the private and public selves, represents the degree to which we have integrity.

I paused at her lesson and wondered, Am I the same person in public that I am in private? Do I have integrity?

Paul wrote letters to the church in Corinth, weaving love and discipline into his teachings to be like Jesus. As he neared the end of this letter (2 CORINTHIANS), he addressed accusers who challenged his integrity by saying he was bold in his letters but weak in person (10:10). These critics used professional oratory to take money from their listeners. While Paul possessed academic prowess, he spoke simply and plainly. “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,” he had written in an earlier letter, “but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power” (1 CORINTHIANS 2:4). His later letter revealed his integrity: “Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present” (2 CORINTHIANS 10:11).

우리를 아시는 구세주

“아빠, 지금 몇 시에요?” 아들이 뒷좌석에서 물었습니다. “5시 30분이야.” 나는 아들이 다음에 무슨 말을 할지 정확히 알고 있었습니다. “아니, 5시 28분이에요!”라고 하며 아들 얼굴이 환해지는 것을 보았습니다. 아이의 환한 웃음은 ‘제가 맞았지요!’라고 말하고 있었습니다. 나 역시 기뻤습니다. 이는 부모만이 자신의 아이를 알기 때문에 누릴 수 있는 기쁨입니다.

여느 세심한 부모처럼 나도 우리 아이들에 대해 알고 있습니다. 잠을 깨울때 어떻게 반응하는지, 점심엔 무엇을 먹고 싶어 하는지를 압니다. 그리고 수많은 관심사나 바라는 것들, 좋아하는 것들에 대해서도 알고 있습니다.

그러나 나는 결코 주님이 우리를 아시는 것만큼 아이들의 겉과 속을 완전히 알 수는 없을 것입니다.

요한복음 1장에서 우리는 예수님이 자기 백성들을 얼마나 자세히 알고 계신지를 엿볼 수 있습니다. 예수님을 만나보라는 빌립의 간절한 권유로 나다나엘이 예수님 앞에 나아가자 예수님은 이렇게 선포하셨습니다. “이는 참으로 이스라엘 사람이라 그 속에 간사한 것이 없도다”(47절). 이에 나다나엘이 깜짝 놀라며 반응했습니다. “저를 어떻게 아십니까?” 그러자 예수님은 약간 의아하게도 무화과나무 밑에 있는 그를 보았다고 말씀하셨습니다 (48절).

예수님이 왜 이 이야기를 하셨는지 우리는 알 수 없지만 나다나엘은 알았던 것 같습니다! 너무나 감격한 나다나엘은 “랍비여, 당신은 하나님의 아들이시니이다”(49절)라고 대답했습니다.

예수님은 이처럼 남들이 나를 알아주기를 바라는 대로 우리 각자를 자세히, 완전히, 그리고 정확히 아십니다. 주님은 우리를 온전히 받아들이셔서 우리가 주님의 제자가 될 뿐 아니라 사랑하는 친구가 되라고 부르고 계십니다(요한복음 15:15).

The Savior Who Knows Us

“Dad, what time is it?” my son asked from the back seat. “It’s 5:30.” I knew exactly what he’d say next. “No, it’s 5:28!” I watched his face light up. Gotcha! his beaming smile said. I felt delight too—the kind that comes from knowing your child the way only a parent can.

Like any attentive parent, I know my children. I know how they’ll respond when I wake them up. I know what they’ll want in their lunches. I know countless interests, desires, and preferences.

But for all that, I'll never know them perfectly, inside and out, the way our Lord knows us.

We catch a glimpse of the kind of intimate knowledge Jesus has of His people in John 1. As Nathanael, who Philip had urged to meet Jesus, moved toward Him, Jesus pronounced, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit” (V 47). Startled, Nathanael responded, “How do you know me?” Somewhat mysteriously, Jesus replied that He’d seen him under the fig tree (V 48).

We may not know why Jesus chose to share this particular detail, but it seems Nathaniel did! Overwhelmed, he responded, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God” (V 49).

Jesus knows each of us like this: intimately, completely, and perfectly—the way we long to be known. And He accepts us completely—inviting us to be, not only His followers, but His beloved friends (JOHN 15:15). - ADAM HOLZ

상처 주는 말

“말라깽이, 말라깽이.” 남자 아이가 놀려댔습니다. “막대기.” 라며 다른 아이가 거들었습니다. 나는 이렇게 외치며 되받아칠 수 있었겠지요. “막대기와 돌로 내 뼈를 부러뜨릴 수는 있지만 말로는 절대로 상처 받지 않아.” 그러나 비록 어린 여자 아이였어도 나는 널리 알려진 이 문구가 사실이 아니라는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 무례하고 분별없이 하는 말들은 정말 상처를 줍니다. 때로는 그것이 돌이나 막대기로 맞아 부풀어 오른 것보다 훨씬 더 깊고 오래 가는 상처로 남습니다.

한나는 분별없이 하는 말들이 상처를 준다는 것 을 분명히 알고 있었습니다. 그녀는 남편 엘가나에게서 사랑은 받았지만 자식이 없었습니다. 반면, 둘째 부인 브닌나에게는 여러 자녀가 있었습니다. 자녀가 있느냐의 여부로 여성의 가치를 판단하던 문화 속에서 브닌나는 한나가 아이를 가지지 못한다는 이유로 계속 그녀를 “격분시켰습니다”. 브닌나는 한나가 울면서 먹을 수 없을 때까지 계속 그렇게 했습니다 (사무엘상 1:6-7).

엘가나는 아마도 좋은 의도로 그렇게 했겠지만, “한나여 어찌하여 우느냐......내가 그대에게 열 아들보다 낫지 아니하냐”(8절)라며 생각 없이 보인 그의 반응은 한나에게 여전히 상처가 되었습니다.

많은 사람들이 한나처럼 상처를 주는 말의 후유증으로 바로 서지 못하고 있습니다. 그래서 어떤 사람들은 아마도 받은 상처에 대한 대응으로 자신들의 말로 상대방을 심하게 비난하고 상처를 주었을 것입니다. 하지만 우리 모두는 사랑이 많으시고 자비로우신 우리 하나님께로 달려가 힘과 치유를 간구해야 합니다(시편 27:5, 12-14). 하나님은 사랑과 은혜의 말을 하는 우리를 보시고 사랑하며 기뻐하십니다.

Words that Wound

“Skinny bones, skinny bones,” the boy taunted. “Stick,” another chimed. In return, I could have chanted “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But even as a little girl, I knew the popular rhyme wasn’t true. Unkind, thoughtless words did hurt—sometimes badly, leaving wounds that went deeper and lasted much longer than a welt from a stone or stick.

Hannah certainly knew the sting of thoughtless words. Her husband, Elkanah, loved her, but she had no children, while his second wife, Peninnah, had many. In a culture where a woman’s worth was often based on having children, Peninnah made Hannah’s pain worse by continually “provoking her” for being childless. She kept it up until Hannah wept and couldn’t eat (1 SAMUEL 1:6–7).

And Elkanah probably meant well, but his thoughtless response, “Hannah, why are you weeping? . . . Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?” (V 8) was still hurtful.

Like Hannah, many of us have been left reeling in the wake of hurtful words. And some of us have likely reacted to our own wounds by lashing out and hurting others with our words. But all of us can run to our loving and compassionate God for strength and healing (PSALM 27:5, 12–14). He lovingly rejoices over us—speaking words of love and grace. - ALYSON KIEDA

명쾌한 소통

아시아를 여행하던 중에 읽을 자료와 업무 문서를 많이 저장해둔 내 아이패드가 갑자기 작동을 멈춰버렸습니다. “깜깜한 죽은 화면”이라고 하는 경우였습니다. 도움을 구하던 중 컴퓨터 가게 하나를 발견했지만 또 다른 문제에 봉착하였습니다. 나는 중국어를 못하고 수리기사는 영어를 하지 못했습니다. 해결책은요? 기사가 소프트웨어 프로그램 하나를 열었는데 그가 중국어로 입력하면 나는 그것을 영어로 읽을 수 있었습니다. 그 다음에는 반대로 내가 영어로 입력하면 그가 중국어로 읽었습니다. 소프트웨어 덕분에 우리는 서로 다른 언어로도 명쾌하게 의사소통을 할 수 있었습니다.

하늘에 계신 아버지께 기도할 때 나는 내 마음을 전달하고 표현할 수 없다는 느낌을 가질 때가 가끔 있습니다. 나만이 그런 것은 아닙니다. 때때로 많은 사람들이 기도하며 힘들어 합니다. 그러나 바울 사도는 이렇게 말합니다. “성령도 우리의 연약함을 도우시나니 우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직 성령이 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 친히 간구하시느니라 마음을 살피시는 이가 성령의 생각을 아시나니 이는 성령이 하나님의 뜻대로 성도를 위하여 간구하심이니라”(로마서 8:26-27).

성령이 얼마나 놀라운 선물인지 모릅니다! 성령은 그 어떤 컴퓨터 프로그램보다 더 잘 나의 생각과 바람을 하나님 아버지의 목적에 맞게 분명하게 전달해주십니다. 성령께서 역사하심으로 기도가 제대로 드려질 수 있습니다!

Clear Communication

While traveling in Asia, my iPad (containing my reading material and many work documents) suddenly died, a condition described as “the black screen of death.” Seeking help, I found a computer shop and encountered another problem—I don’t speak Chinese and the shop’s technician didn’t speak English. The solution? He pulled up a software program in which he typed in Chinese, but I could read it in English. The process reversed as I responded in English and he read in Chinese. The software allowed us to communicate clearly, even in different languages.

At times, I feel like I’m unable to communicate and express my heart when I pray to my heavenly Father—and I’m not alone. Many of us struggle sometimes with prayer. But the apostle Paul wrote, “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (ROMANS 8:26–27).

How amazing is the gift of the Holy Spirit! Better than any computer program, He clearly communicates my thoughts and desires in harmony with the Father’s purposes. The work of the Spirit makes prayer work! - BILL CROWDER

“아니, 저 아이는 집시잖아.” 1877년에 로드니 스미스가 예배 중에 그리스도를 영접하기 위해 예배당 앞쪽으로 걸어 나갈 때 누군가가 역겨운 듯이 귓속말을 했습니다. 배우지 못한 집시 부모의 아들인 이 십대 소년을 대수롭게 여긴 사람은 아무도 없었습니다. 그러나 로드니는 그런 말들을 귀담아 듣지 않았습니다. 그는 하나님이 자신의 삶에 어떤 목적을 갖고 계심을 확신했기 때문에 성경과 영어사전을 사서 읽고 쓰는 법을 혼자 공부했습니다. 그가 한번은 이렇게 말했습니다. “예수님께로 가기 위해 캠브리지나 하버드, 예일에 가거나 시인이 되어야 하는 것은 아닙니다. 예수님께로 가는 길은......갈보리라고 불리는 오래된 언덕입니다.” 온갖 어려운 여건에도 불구하고 로드니는 복음전도자가 되어 영국과 미국의 많은 사람들을 예수님께로 인도하는데 하나님께 쓰임 받았습니다.

베드로 역시 예수님이 그에게 단 두 마디로 간단하게 “나를 따르라”(마태복음 4:19)라고 하셨을 때 그저 평범한 사람에 지나지 않았습니다. 그는 종교적인 랍비 학교에서 교육받은 적이 없는 (사도행전 4:13) 갈릴리 출신의 어부였습니다. 그러나 그런 배경과 늘 겪어온 실패에도 불구하고 바로 그 베드로가 훗날 예수님을 따르는 사람들을 향해 “선택하신 민족이며 왕 같은 제사장이요 거룩한 나라요 하나님의 소유가 된 백성”(베드로전서 2:9, 현대인의 성경)이라고 분명히 말했습니다.

사람들은 교육이나 양육, 성별 또는 인종에 관계없이 모두 다 예수 그리스도를 통해 하나님 가족의 한 지체가 될 수 있고 또 주님께 쓰임 받을 수 있습니다. 예수님을 믿는 모든 사람들은 하나님의 “특별한 소유”가 됩니다.

Only a Gypsy Boy

“Oh, it’s only a gypsy boy,” someone whispered with disgust when Rodney Smith walked to the front of the chapel to receive Christ during a service in 1877. Nobody thought much of this teenager, the son of uneducated gypsy parents. Yet, Rodney didn’t listen to those voices. He was certain that God had a purpose for his life so he bought himself a Bible and an English dictionary and taught himself how to read and write. He once said, “The way to Jesus is not by Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, or the poets. It is . . . an oldfashioned hill called Calvary.” Against all odds, Rodney became an evangelist who God used to bring many to Jesus in the UK and US.

Peter too was just a simple man—untrained in the religious rabbinic schools (ACTS 4:13), a fisherman from Galilee—when Jesus called him with two simple words: “Follow me” (MATTHEW 4:19). Yet the same Peter, despite his upbringing and the failures he experienced along the way, later affirmed that those who follow Jesus are “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” (1 PETER 2:9).

Through Jesus Christ all people—whatever their education, upbringing, gender, or ethnicity—can be a part of the family of God and be used by Him. Becoming God’s “special possession” is for all who believe in Jesus. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

가리개 벗겨 없애기

참담한 자동차 사고로 메리 앤 프랑코는 완전히 망가지고 말았습니다. 겨우 목숨은 건졌지만 부상으로 앞을 전혀 볼수 없게 되었습니다. “내가 볼 수 있었던 것은 오직 어둠 뿐이었습니다.”라고 프랑코는 말했습니다. 21년 후에 그녀는 낙상 사고로 등을 다쳤습니다. 눈과는 아무 상관이 없는 수술을 받은 후 깨어났는데 기적적으로 시력이 되돌아왔습니다! 프랑코는 20년도 더 지나고 나서 처음으로 딸의 얼굴을 다시 보게 되었습니다. 담당 신경외과 의사는 그녀의 시력이 회복된 것은 과학적으로 도저히 설명이 되지 않는다고 했습니다. 바뀔 것 같지 않았던 어두움이 아름다움과 빛으로 바뀐 것입니다.

우리의 경험과 더불어 성경은 무지와 악의 가리개가 세상을 덮어 우리 모두 하나님의 사랑을 볼 수 없게 되었다고 말합니다(이사야 25:7). 이기심과 탐욕, 자만심, 그리고 권력이나 평판에 대한 욕망 등, 이 모든 충동들이 우리의 시야를 흐리게 하여 “놀라운 일들을 신실하고 진실하게 이루신”(1절) 하나님을 환히 볼 수 없게 만듭니다.

어떤 성경 번역은 이 눈앞을 가리는 가리개를 “어둠의 구름” 이라고 부릅니다. 우리가 우리 자신에게만 빠져있으면 오직 어두움과 혼란, 절망만 겪을 뿐입니다. 우리는 자주 갇혀 있다는 느낌에 사로잡혀 앞을 보지 못하고 더듬거리며 넘어집니다. 그러나 감사하게도 이사야는 하나님께서 결국 “모든 민족의 얼굴을 가린 가리개를 제하실”(7절) 것이라고 약속하십니다.

하나님은 우리를 절망 상태로 내버려두지 않으실 것입니다. 그분의 사랑의 광채가 우리 눈을 멀게 하는 모든 것을 다 제거하여 행복한 삶과 풍성한 은혜의 아름다운 모습을 보여주심으로 우리를 놀라게 하실 것입니다.

Destroying the Shroud

A brutal car wreck devastated Mary Ann Franco. Though she survived, the injuries left her completely blind. “All I could see was blackness,” Franco explained. Twentyone years later, she injured her back in a fall. After waking from surgery (which had nothing to do with her eyes), miraculously, her sight had returned! For the first time in more than two decades, Franco saw her daughter’s face. The neurosurgeon insisted there was no scientific explanation for her restored vision. The darkness that seemed so final gave way to beauty and light.

The Scriptures, as well as our experience, tell us that a shroud of ignorance and evil covers the world, blinding all of us to God’s love (ISAIAH 25:7). Selfishness and greed, our selfsufficiency, our lust for power or image—all these compulsions obscure our vision, making us unable to clearly see the God who “in perfect faithfulness [has] done wonderful things” (V 1).

One translation calls this blinding shroud a “cloud of gloom” ( NLT ) Left to ourselves, we experience only darkness, confusion, and despair. We often feel trapped—groping and stumbling, unable to see our way forward. Thankfully, Isaiah promises that God will ultimately “destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples” (V 7)

God will not leave us hopeless. His radiant love removes whatever blinds us, surprising us with a beautiful vision of a good life and abundant grace. - WINN COLLIER

모든 백성들의 하나님

뉴스보이즈 밴드의 전 리드 싱어였던 피터 펄러는 그들의 찬양곡인 “그가 다스리시네” 공연을 설명하면서, 그 곡은 한 마음으로 하나님을 경배하기 위해 모든 종족 모든 나라에서 함께 나아온 성도들의 모습을 생생하게 그리고 있다고 했습니다. 그는 또 뉴스보이즈 밴드가 그 곡을 부를 때마다 성도들이 모여 있는 곳에 성령께서 운행하시는 것을 느낄 수 있었다고 말했습니다.

“그가 다스리시네 ” 를 부르며 경험한 펄러의 이야기는 아마 오순절에 예루살렘에 모여들었던 무리들도 똑같이 경험했던 것일지도 모릅니다. 제자들이 성령으로 충만해지자(사도행전 2 : 4 ) 그 누구도 경험해보지 못했던 일들이 일어나기 시작했습니다. 그 결과 각 나라에서 온 유대인들이 다 혼란에 빠지게 되었는데, 이는 각자가 하나님께서 행하신 놀라운 일들을 자신들의 언어로 말하는 것을 들었기 때문입니다(5-6,11절). 베드로는 무리들에게 그것은 하나님께서 “내가 성령을 모든 사람에게 부어주겠다”(17절, 현대인의 성경)고 하신 구약성경의 예언이 성취된
것이라고 설명했습니다.

이렇게 모든 것을 나타내 보이시는 하나님의 놀라운 능력을 본 무리들은 베드로의 복음 선포를 받아들이고 그날 하루에만 삼천명이 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다(41절). 이 놀라운 사건이 일어난 후 새로 믿게 된 사람들은 복음을 들고 세상의 그들 자신의 지역으로 돌아갔습니다.

이 좋은 소식, 곧 모든 사람들에게 소망을 가져다주는 하나님의 메시지가 오늘도 여전히 울려 퍼지고 있습니다. 우리가 다 함께 하나님을 찬양할 때 성령께서 우리 가운데 운행하시면서 모든 나라의 백성들을 놀랍게 하나로 뭉쳐 주십니다. ‘그분이 다스리십니다!’

God of All People

Former Newsboys lead vocalist Peter Furler describes the performance of the band’s praise song “He Reigns.” The song paints a vivid picture of believers from every tribe and nation coming together to worship God in unity. Furler observed that whenever the Newsboys sang it he could sense the moving of the Holy Spirit in the gathering of believers.

Furler’s description of his experiences with “He Reigns” would likely have resonated with the crowds who converged on Jerusalem at Pentecost. When the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit (ACTS 2:4), things began to happen beyond anyone’s experience. As a result, Jews representing every nation came together in confusion, because each one heard their own language being spoken to make God’s wonders known (VV 5–6, 11). Peter explained to the crowd that this was in fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy in which God said, “I will pour out my Spirit on all people” (V 17).

This all-inclusive display of God’s awesome power made the crowd receptive to Peter’s declaration of the gospel, leading to three thousand converts that day alone (V 41). Following this spectacular kickoff, these new believers then returned to their corner of the world, taking the good news with them.

The good news still resounds today—God’s message of hope for all people. As we praise God together, His Spirit moves among us, bringing people of every nation together in wonderful unity. He reigns! - REMI OYEDELE

나누어 먹는 조각들

퇴역 군인이고 노숙자인 62세의 스티브는 일 년 내내 밖에서 잠을 자도 괜찮은 기후가 따뜻한 곳으로 옮겨갔습니다. 어느 날 저녁 얼마의 돈이라도 벌려고 손으로 직접 그린 그림을 전시했는데 한 젊은 여자가 다가와서 피자 몇 조각을 주었습니다. 그것을 기쁘게 받은 스티브는 잠시 후 그가 받은 것을 다른 배고픈 노숙자에게 나누어주었습니다. 그 젊은 여자는 그가 자기가 받은 것을 후하게 나누어준 것을 알았다며 거의 동시에 다른 피자 한 판을 들고 다시 나타났습니다.

스티브의 이야기는 우리가 다른 사람에게 관대할 때 우리 역시 관대하게 대접받을 수 있다는 잠언 11장 25절의 원리를 잘 보여줍니다. 하지만 우리는 그같이 어떤 대가를 바라고 베풀면 안 됩니다. 우리의 관대함에 대한 대가가 스티브처럼 빠르고 확실하게 나타나는 경우는 극히 드물기 때문입니다. 그보다는 다른 사람들을 도우라는 하나님의 가르침에 사랑의 응답으로 베풀어야 합니다 (빌립보서 2:3-4; 요한1서 3:17). 그리고 우리가 그렇게 할 때 하나님께서 기뻐하십니다. 하나님은 우리의 지갑이나 배를 다시 채워주셔야 할 그 어떤 의무도 없으시지만, 때로는 물질적으로 때로는 영적으로 우리를 새롭게 하실 방법을 자주 찾으십니다.

스티브는 두 번째 피자 판도 미소를 머금고 아낌없이 나누어주었습니다. 그는 가진 것은 많지 않았지만, 우리가 가진 것을 자신을 위해 쌓아두지 않고 흔쾌히 즐거운 마음으로 다른 사람들과 나누며 관대하게 사는 것이 어떤 것인지를 예로 보여주었습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 인도하시고 능력 주실 때, 우리도 그와 같이 할 수 있게 되기를 소망합니다.

Sharing Slices

Steve, a sixty-two-year-old homeless military veteran, made his way to a warm climate where sleeping outdoors was tolerable year-round. One evening, as he displayed his hand-drawn art—his attempt to earn some money—a young woman approached and offered him several slices of pizza. Steve gratefully accepted. Moments later, Steve shared his bounty with another hungry, homeless person. Almost immediately, the same young woman resurfaced with another plate of food, acknowledging that he had been generous with what he’d been given.

Steve’s story illustrates the principle found in Proverbs 11:25 that when we’re generous with others, we’re likely to experience generosity as well. But we shouldn’t give with expecting something in return; rarely does our generosity return to us as quickly and obviously as it did for him. Rather, we give to help others in loving response to God’s instruction to do so (PHILIPPIANS 2:3–4; 1 JOHN 3:17). And when we do, God is pleased. While He’s under no obligation to refill our wallets or bellies, He often finds a way to refresh us—sometimes materially, other times spiritually.

Steve shared his second plate of pizza too with a smile and open hands. Despite his lack of resources, he is an example of what it means to live generously, willing to cheerfully share what we have with others instead of hoarding it for ourselves.
