지극히 작은 자를 섬김

한 동영상에서 산불이 나서 통제 불능인 가운데 한 남자가 차량 통행이 잦은 고속도로 옆에서 무릎을 꿇고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그는 손뼉을 치면서 무엇인가에게 어서 오라는 몸짓을 하고 있었습니다. ‘무엇이었을까요?’ ‘강아지?’ 잠시 후 토끼 한 마리가 화면에 나타났습니다. 그는 겁에 질린 토끼를 집어 들고 안전한 곳으로 뛰어갔습니다.

그런 작은 동물을 구조한 일이 어떻게 전국적인 뉴스가 되었을까요? 그것은 바로 이같이 지극히 작은 동물에게 보여준 동정심에 사람들의 마음이 끌렸기 때문입니다. 지극히 작은 생명체를 위한 마음의 공간을 가지려면 아주 넓은 마음이 필요합니다.

예수님은 하나님의 나라는 마치 연회를 베풀고 참여하기 원하는 모든 사람 들을 위하여 자리를 마련해준 사람과 같다고 말씀하셨습니다. 유력인사들 뿐만 아니라 “가난한 자들과 몸 불편한 자들과 맹인들과 저는 자들”(누가복음 14:21)까지 말입니다. 나는 하나님께서 약한 자들과 하찮게 보이는 사람들을 주목하고 계심을 감사드립니다. 그렇지 않다면 나에게 전혀 희망이 없었을 것이기 때문입니다. 바울도 이렇게 말했습니다. “하나님께서 세상의 약한 것들을 택하사 강한 것들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시며 하나님께서 세상의 천한 것들과 멸시 받는 것들을 택하사...... 이는 아무도 하나님 앞에서 자랑하지 못하게 하려 하심이라”(고린도전서 1:27-29).

나같이 미약한 자를 구원하시는 하나님은 아주 넓은 마음을 갖고 계심이 틀림없습니다! 이에 따른 나의 마음은 얼마나 넓게 자라 있는지요? 내가 “중요한 사람들”을 얼마나 기쁘게 해주는가보다는, 사회적으로 가장 덜 중요하게 여겨지는 사람들을 얼마나 섬기고 있는가를 보면 쉽게 알 수 있습니다.

Serving the Smallest

The video showed a man kneeling beside a busy freeway during an out-of-control brush fire. He was clapping his hands and pleading with something to come. What was it? A dog? Moments later a bunny hopped into the picture. The man scooped up the scared rabbit and sprinted to safety.

How did the rescue of such a small thing make national news? That’s why. There’s something endearing about compassion shown to the least of these. It takes a big heart to make room for the smallest creature.

Jesus said the kingdom of God is like a man who gave a banquet and made room for everyone who was willing to come. Not just the movers and shakers but also “the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame” (Luke 14:21). I’m thankful that God targets the weak and the seemingly insignificant, because otherwise I’d have no shot. Paul said, “God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things . . . so that no one may boast before him” (1 Corinthians 1:27–29).

How big must God’s heart be to save a small person like me! In response, how large has my heart grown to be? I can easily tell, not by how I please the “important people,” but by how I serve the ones society might deem the least important.

빛을 바라봄

약물 중독을 극복하려고 애쓰고 있는 한 노숙자가 도움을 청하기 위해 로스앤젤레스 길거리에 있는 미드나잇 미션(노숙자를 돕는 봉사단체) 건물로 걸어 들어갔습니다. 회복을 위한 브라이언의 긴 여정은 그렇게 시작되었습니다.

브라이언은 중독으로부터 회복하는 중에 자신이 음악을 사랑한다는 것을 다시 알게 되었습니다. 그는 결국 노숙자들을 배려하는 마음을 가진 음악 전문가들 그룹인 ‘길거리 교향악단’에 가입했습니다. 그들은 브라이언에게 헨델의 ‘메시아’에 나오는 “흑암에 행하던 백성”으로 알려진 독창곡을 불러달라고 부탁했습니다. 그는 이사야 선지자가 이스라엘 역사의 암흑기 동안에 쓴 말씀을 노래로 불렀습니다. “흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 보고 사망의 그늘진 땅에 거주하던 자에게 빛이 비치도다”(이사야 9:2). 뉴요커 잡지의 음악 평론가는 브라이언이 “노래의 가사를 마치 자신의 삶의 이야기인 것처럼 불렀다.”라고 썼습니다.

가이사의 악명 높은 세리들 중의 한 사람이나(마태복음 9:9 참조) 브라이언 같은 거리의 중독자나, 혹은 우리 같은 사람들이 자신의 삶에서 빛과 어두움의 차이를 보여줄 기회를 가지게 될 거라고 누가 믿었겠습니까?

Seeing the Light

On the streets of Los Angeles, a homeless man struggling with addictions stepped into The Midnight Mission and asked for help. Thus began Brian’s long road to recovery.

In the process Brian rediscovered his love for music. Eventually he joined Street Symphony—a group of music professionals with a heart for the homeless. They asked Brian to perform a solo from Handel’s Messiah known as “The People That Walked in Darkness.” In words written by the prophet Isaiah during a dark period of Israel’s history, he sang, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined” (Isaiah 9:2 kjv). A music critic for The New Yorker magazine wrote that Brian “made the text sound as though it had been taken from his own life.”

The gospel writer Matthew quoted that same passage. Called by Jesus from a life of cheating his fellow Israelites, Matthew describes how Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy by taking His salvation “beyond the Jordan” to “Galilee of the Gentiles” (Matthew 4:13–15).

Who would have believed one of Caesar’s tax collector thugs (see Matthew 9:9), a street addict like Brian, or people like us would get a chance to show the difference between light and darkness in our own lives?

새로운 활력

쉰 네 살의 나이에 나는 두 가지 목표를 가지고 밀워키 마라톤에 참가했습니다. 하나는 완주하는 것이었고, 다른 하나는 다섯 시간 안에 들어오는 것이었습니다. 만일 후반 13.1마일(약 21킬로미터)도 전반처럼 뛰었다면 내 기록은 경이로웠을 것입니다. 하지만 경주는 너무 힘이 들었고 기대했던 새로운 활력은 전혀 찾아오지 않았습니다. 결승선에 도착할 무렵에는 꾸준했던 나의 달리기가 고통스런 걸음으로 바뀌어져 있었습니다.

달리기 경주만이 새로운 활력을 요구 하는 것은 아닙니다. 인생의 경주도 마찬가지 입니다. 지치고 곤비한 사람들이 견디기 위해서는 하나님의 도움이 필요합니다. 시와 예언이 아름답게 조화를 이룬 이사야 40:27-31 말씀은 계속 나아가기 위해 힘이 필요한 사람들에게 위로와 동기를 부여해줍니다. 변치 않는 하나님의 말씀은 지치고 낙심한 사람들에게 주님이 우리로부터 떨어져 계시거나 무관심하지 않다는 것과(27절) 우리가 처한 곤경을 주님이 다 알고 계신다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다. 이 말씀들은 위로와 확신을 불어넣어 주고 하나님의 무한한 능력과 한없는 명철을 상기시켜줍니다(28절).

29-31절에 묘사된 새로운 활력은 바로 우리를 위한 말씀입니다. 우리가 가족을 양육하고 부양하는 수고를 하고 있거나, 육체적 또는 경제적 짐을 지고 힘든 삶을 살아가거나, 인간관계나 영적 도전으로 낙심하거나 할 때 말입니다. 그 새로운 활력이 성경을 묵상하고 기도하면서 주님을 기다리는 사람들을 위해 준비되어 있습니다.

Second-Wind Strength

At the age of fifty-four I entered the Milwaukee marathon with two goals—to finish the race and to do it under five hours. My time would have been amazing if the second 13.1 miles went as well as the first. But the race was grueling, and the second-wind strength I’d hoped for never came. By the time I made it to the finish line, my steady stride had morphed into a painful walk.

Footraces aren’t the only things that require second-wind strength—life’s race does too. To endure, tired, weary people need God’s help. Isaiah 40:27–31 beautifully weds poetry and prophecy to comfort and motivate people who need strength to keep going. Timeless words remind fatigued and discouraged people that the Lord isn’t detached or uncaring (v. 27), that our plight doesn’t escape His notice. These words breathe comfort and assurance, and remind us of God’s limitless power and bottomless knowledge (v. 28).

The second-wind strength described in verses 29–31 is just right for us—whether we’re in the throes of raising and providing for our families, struggling through life under the weight of physical or financial burdens, or discouraged by relational tensions or spiritual challenges. Such is the strength that awaits those who—through meditating on the Scriptures and prayer—wait upon the Lord.

깨끗하게 씻김

믿을 수 없었습니다. 접힌 하얀 수건들 사이에 감추어져 있던 파란색 볼펜이 세탁할 때는 괜찮았는데 건조기에서 그만 터져버리고 말았습니다. 사방이 더러운 파란색으로 얼룩져 흰 수건들이 다 못쓰게 되었습니다. 아무리 표백제를 많이 써도 그 진한 얼룩들을 지울 수 없을 것입니다.

어쩔 수 없이 수건들을 걸레 더미 위에 얹어놓으며, 죄가 얼마나 우리를 상하게 하는지를 설명하며 슬퍼한 구약의 예레미야 선지자가 떠올랐습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님을 버리고 우상을 섬김으로써(예레미야 2:13) 하나님과의 관계를 영구적으로 얼룩지게 했다고 예레미야는 선포했습니다. “주 여호와의 말씀이니라 네가 잿물로 스스로 씻으며 네가 많은 비누를 쓸지라도 네 죄악이 내 앞에 그대로 있으리니”(22절). 그들에게는 자신들이 저지른 훼손을 다시 되돌릴 능력이 없었습니다.

우리 죄의 얼룩을 우리 스스로 없애는 것은 불가능합니다. 하지만 예수님은 우리가 할 수 없는 일을 하셨습니다. 그의 죽음과 부활의 능력으로 주님은 “[믿는 자들을] 모든 죄에서 깨끗하게 하십니다” (요한1서 1:7).

아무리 믿기 어려울 때라도 예수님이 완전히 없앨 수 없는 죄로 인한 훼손은 없다는, 이 아름다운 진리를 붙잡으십시오. 하나님은 그분께로 기꺼이 돌아오는 사람은 누구나 그들의 죄로 인한 결과들을 기꺼이 씻어주실 준비가 되어 있습니다(9절). 그리스도를 통해 우리는 매일 자유와 소망 가운데 살 수 있습니다.

Washed Clean

I couldn’t believe it. A blue gel pen had hidden itself in the folds of my white towels and survived the washing machine, only to explode in the dryer. Ugly blue stains were everywhere. My white towels were ruined. No amount of bleach would be able to remove the dark stains.

As I reluctantly consigned the towels to the rag pile, I was reminded of the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah’s lament describing the damaging effects of sin. By rejecting God and turning to idols (Jeremiah 2:13), Jeremiah declared that the people of Israel had caused a permanent stain in their relationship with God: “‘Although you wash yourself with soap and use an abundance of cleansing powder, the stain of your guilt is still before me,’ declares the Sovereign Lord” (v. 22). They were powerless to undo the damage they’d done.

On our own, it is impossible to remove the stain of our sin. But Jesus has done what we could not. Through the power of His death and resurrection, He “purifies [believers] from all sin” (1 John 1:7).

Even when it’s hard to believe, cling to this beautiful truth: there’s no damage from sin that Jesus can’t totally remove. God is willing and ready to wash away the effects of sin for anyone willing to return to Him (v. 9). Through Christ, we can live each day in freedom and hope.

저 사람이 누굴까?

어떤 사람이 보안카메라를 그의 집 밖에 설치하고 시스템이 작동하는지 보려고 영상을 확인해보았습니다. 그는 마당에 어두운 색의 옷을 입은 어깨가 벌어진 남자를 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그는 그 남자가 무엇을 하는지 유심히 쳐다보았는데, 그 침입자가 낯익어 보이기도 하였습니다. 결국 그가 본 것은 집 마당을 돌아다니는 낯선 사람이 아니라 녹화된 ‘자기 자신’이었습니다!

만약에 우리가 몸 밖으로 나와서 어떤 환경 속에 처한 우리 자신의 모습을 볼 수 있다면 어떤 모습을 보게 될까요? 다윗의 마음이 완고해져서 밧세바와의 일에 관해 외적인 시각, 곧 하나님의 시각이 필요하게 되었을 때 하나님은 나단을 보내어 그를 구해주셨습니다(사무엘하 12장).

나단은 다윗에게 가난한 자의 양을 강탈한 부자의 이야기를 들려주었습니다. 그 부자는 많은 가축을 소유하고 있었지만 가난한 자의 한 마리뿐인 양을 잡아 음식을 준비했습니다. 나단이 그 이야기가 다윗의 행동을 보여주는 것이라고 말하자 다윗은 자신이 어떻게 우리야에게 잘못을 저질렀는지를 깨달았습니다. 나단은 그 행동의 결과에 대해서도 설명했지만, 더 중요한 것은 “여호와께서도 당신의 죄를 사하셨다”며 다윗을 확신시켜준 것입니다(13절).

하나님이 우리 삶에서 죄를 드러내실 경우, 하나님의 궁극적인 목적은 우리를 정죄하기 위해서가 아니라 우리를 바로잡고 우리가 상처 준 이들과 화해할 수 있도록 도우시려는 것입니다. 회개는 하나님의 용서와 은혜의 힘을 통해 우리가 하나님과 다시 가까워지는 길을 열어줍니다.

Who Is That?

When a man installed a security camera outside his house, he checked the video feature to ensure that the system was working. He was alarmed to see a broad-shouldered figure in dark clothing wandering around his yard. He watched intently to see what the man would do. The interloper seemed familiar, however. Finally he realized he wasn’t watching a stranger roam his property, but a recording of himself in his own backyard!

What might we see if we could step out of our skin and observe ourselves in certain situations? When David’s heart was hardened and he needed an outside perspective—a godly perspective—on his involvement with Bathsheba, God sent Nathan to the rescue (2 Samuel 12).

Nathan told David a story about a rich man who robbed a poor man of his only lamb. Though the rich man owned herds of animals, he slaughtered the poor man’s lone sheep and made it into a meal. When Nathan revealed that the story illustrated David’s actions, David saw how he had harmed Uriah. Nathan explained the consequences, but more important he assured David, “The Lord has taken away your sin” (v. 13).

If God reveals sin in our lives, His ultimate purpose isn’t to condemn us, but to restore us and to help us reconcile with those we’ve hurt. Repentance clears the way for renewed closeness with God through the power of His forgiveness and grace.

찢겨진 휘장

그날 예루살렘의 외곽은 어둡고 음산하였습니다. 성벽 바로 바깥 언덕에는 지난 삼 년 동안 군중들이 열렬히 따랐던 한 사람이 수치와 고통 속에 거친 나무 십자가에 달려있었습니다. 슬픔 속에 많은 사람들이 울며 흐느꼈습니다. 그날 오후 햇빛은 더 이상 하늘을 밝히지 않았습니다. 그리고 십자가에 달린 그 사람의 극심한 고통은 “다 이루었다”(마태복음 27:50; 요한복음 19:30)라고 크게 외치는 그의 소리와 함께 끝이 났습니다.

바로 그 순간, 도시 반대편에 있는 큰 성전에서 천이 찢어지는 소리가 들렸습니다. 사람의 손이 아닌 기적적인 방법으로 바깥 성전과 지성소를 구분 지었던 크고 두꺼운 휘장이 위로부터 아래까지 둘로 찢어졌습니다(마태복음 27:51).

그 찢겨진 휘장은 십자가의 실제적인 의미를 상징하는 것이었습니다. 하나님을 향한 새로운 길이 이제 열린 것입니다! 십자가에 달렸던 그 사람, 예수님이 참되고 온전한 마지막 희생 제물로 피를 흘리심으로써(히브리서 10:10) 주님을 믿는 모든 사람이 용서를 받고 하나님과의 관계 속으로 들어갈 수 있게 되었습니다(로마서 5:6-11).

그 첫 성 금요일의 암흑 속에서 우리는 최고의 좋은 소식을 접하게 되었습니다. 그것은 예수님이 우리가 죄로부터 구원받고 하나님과의 교제를 영원히 누릴 수 있는 길을 열어주셨다는 것입니다(히브리서 10:19-22). 그 찢겨진 휘장의 메시지를 주신 하나님, 감사합니다!

The Torn Veil

It was a dark and somber day in the outskirts of Jerusalem. On a hill just outside the city walls, a Man who’d been attracting crowds of eager followers for the past three years hung in disgrace and pain on a rough wooden cross. Mourners wept and wailed in sorrow. The light of the sun no longer brightened the afternoon sky. And the intense suffering of the Man on the cross ended when He cried out in a loud voice, “It is finished” (Matthew 27:50; John 19:30).

At that very moment, another sound came from the great temple across town—the sound of ripping fabric. Miraculously, without human intervention, the huge, thick veil that separated the outer temple from the holy of holies tore in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51).

That torn curtain symbolized the reality of the cross: a new way was now open to God! Jesus, the Man on the cross, had shed His blood as the last sacrifice—the one true and sufficient sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10)—which allows all who believe in Him to enjoy forgiveness and enter into a relationship with God (Romans 5:6–11).

Amidst the darkness of that original Good Friday, we received the best news ever—Jesus opened a way for us to be saved from our sins and to experience fellowship with God forever (Hebrews 10:19–22). Thank God for the message of the torn veil!

그 순간

나는 구급차 안에 누워있었고 차의 문이 막 닫히려 하고 있었습니다. 밖에서는 아들이 아내에게 전화를 걸고 있었습니다. 흐릿한 의식 속에 나는 아들의 이름을 불렀습니다. 아들은 그 때를 회상하면서 내가 천천히 “엄마에게 내가 정말로 많이 사랑한다고 전해다오.”라고 말했다고 했습니다.

나는 분명 이것이 마지막이라고 생각했고 그 말을 작별인사로 남기려 했습니다. 그 순간 나에게는 그 작별인사가 가장 중요한 것이었습니다.

그러나 예수님은 가장 고통스러운 순간을 견디고 계실 때 단지 우리를 사랑 한다는 말씀만으로 그치지 않고 구체적인 행동으로 보여주셨습니다. 예수님은 주님을 십자가에 못 박고 조롱하던 병사들에게 그 사랑을 보여주셨습니다. “아버지 저들을 사하여 주옵소서 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다”(누가복음 23:34). 그리고 함께 십자가에 달린 행악자에게도 희망을 주셨습니다. “오늘 네가 나와 함께 낙원에 있으리라”(43절). 주님은 죽음이 다가왔을 때 그의 어머니를 바라보며 “이 사람이 어머니의 아들입니다”라고 말씀하시고, 가까운 친구였던 제자 요한에게 “이 분이 네 어머니시다”(요한복음 19:26-27, 새번역)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러고는 숨을 거두시면서 예수님은 마지막 사랑의 모습으로 아버지이신 하나님을 신뢰하는 모습을 보여주셨습니다. “내 영혼을 아버지 손에 부탁하나이다”(누가복음 23:46).

예수님은 아버지 하나님에 대한 순종과 우리를 향한 사랑의 깊이를 보여주시기 위해 의도적으로 십자가를 택하셨습니다. 예수님은 마지막 순간까지 우리에게 변함없는 사랑을 보여주셨습니다.

In the Moment

The ambulance door was about to close—with me on the inside. Outside, my son was on the phone to my wife. From my concussed fog, I called his name. As he recalls the moment, I slowly said, “Tell your mom I love her very much.”

Apparently I thought this might be goodbye, and I wanted those to be my parting words. In the moment, that’s what mattered most to me.

As Jesus endured His darkest moment, He didn’t merely tell us He loved us; He showed it in specific ways. He showed it to the mocking soldiers who had just nailed Him to a cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). He gave hope to a criminal crucified with Him: “Today you will be with me in paradise” (v. 43). Nearing the end, He looked at His mother. “Here is your son,” He said to her, and to His close friend John He said, “Here is your mother” (John 19:26–27). Then, as His life slipped from Him, Jesus’s last act of love was to trust His Father: “Into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46).

Jesus purposefully chose the cross in order to show His obedience to His Father—and the depth of His love for us. To the very end, He showed us His relentless love.

꽃과 같은 영화

막내손자가 태어난 지 겨우 2개월 밖에 되지 않았지만, 나는 그 아이를 볼 때마다 매번 조금씩 변한다는 것을 느낍니다. 최근에는 손자를 어르니까 나를 올려다보며 웃더라고요! 그러자 갑자기 눈물이 나왔습니다. 아마도 그것은 내 아이들의 첫 웃음이 떠오르면서 그 기억들이 뒤섞인 기쁨의 눈물이었을 것입니다. 정말 아주 오래 전 일이지만 마치 어제처럼 느껴집니다. 어떤 순간들은 그처럼 말로
설명하기가 어렵습니다.

시편 103편에서 다윗은 하나님을 찬양하면서 동시에 우리 인생의 즐거운 순간들이 얼마나 빨리 스쳐 지나가는 지를 시로 썼습니다. “인생은 그 날이 풀과 같으며 그 영화가 들의 꽃과 같도다 그것은 바람이 지나가면 없어지나니”(15-16절).

다윗은 인생의 짧음을 인정하면서도 꽃들이 무성하다거나 번창한다고 표현합니다. 비록 꽃송이마다 피어 있는 시간은 짧지만 꽃들의 향기와 색깔과 아름다움은 그 순간 많은 기쁨을 안겨줍니다. 비록 꽃들의 존재는 “그 있던 자리도 다시 알지 못하거니와”(16절) 라는 말씀처럼 빨리 잊히겠지만, 대조적으로 우리에게는 “여호와의 인자하심은 자기를 경외하는 자에게 영원부터 영원까지 이르며”(17절) 라는 확신을 주는 말씀이 있습니다.

우리는 꽃과 같이 잠시 동안 즐거워하고 삶을 꽃피울 수 있습니다. 그러나 또한 우리 삶의 순간들이 결코 잊히지 않는다는 사실로도 우리는 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리 삶의 세세한 부분까지 다 붙드시며, 그분의 영원하신 사랑은 그의 자녀들과 영원히 함께 할 것입니다!

Flourishing Like a Flower

My youngest grandson is only two months old, yet every time I see him I notice little changes. Recently, as I cooed to him, he looked up at me and smiled! And suddenly I began crying. Perhaps it was joy mixed with remembering my own children’s first smiles, which I witnessed so long ago, and yet it feels like just yesterday. Some moments are like that—inexplicable.

In Psalm 103, David penned a poetic song that praised God while also reflecting on how quickly the joyful moments of our lives pass by: “The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone” (vv. 15–16).

But despite acknowledging the brevity of life, David describes the flower as flourishing, or thriving. Although each individual flower blossoms and blooms swiftly, its fragrance and color and beauty bring great joy in the moment. And even though an individual flower can be quickly forgotten—“its place remembers it no more” (v. 16)—by contrast we have the assurance that “from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him” (v. 17).

We, like flowers, can rejoice and flourish in the moment; but we can also celebrate the truth that the moments of our lives are never truly forgotten. God holds every detail of our lives, and His everlasting love is with His children forever!

만드신 솜씨를 찬양

캘리포니아주 바하 인근의 바다 속 4천 피트(약 1.2킬로미터) 깊이에는 희귀한 해파리가 해류를 따라 돌아다니고 있습니다. 해파리의 몸은 검은 바닷물을 배경으로 파랑, 보라, 분홍색의 형광 빛으로 밝게 빛을 냅니다. 종 모양의 몸체가 펄럭일 때마다 우아한 모습의 촉수가 부드럽게 물결칩니다. 내셔널 지오그래픽 방송에서 할리트레페스 마시 해파리의 놀라운 영상을 보며, 나는 하나님이 이 아름다운 젤리 같은 생명체를 어떻게 이처럼 특이하게 설계하셨을까 생각해보았습니다. 하나님께서 만드신 다른 모양의 해파리도 2017년 10월 현재 과학자들이 확인한 것이 2천 종이나 됩니다.

우리가 하나님을 창조주로 인정 하면서도, 충분한 여유를 가지고 성경의 첫 장이 보여주는 심오한 진리를 제대로 묵상하고 있는지요? 우리의 놀라우신 하나님은 말씀의 능력으로 다양하게 창조하신 이 세상에 빛과 생명을 더해주셨습니다. 하나님은 “큰 바다 짐승들과 물에서 번성하여 움직이는 모든 생물을”(창세기 1:21) 만드셨습니다. 과학자들이 발견한 것들은 하나님께서 태초에 창조하신 경이로운 창조물들의 일부에 불과합니다.

하나님은 또한 이 세상의 각 사람들을 하나님의 계획 안에서 지으시고, 우리가 태어나기도 전 우리의 일상의 삶에 목적을 부여하셨습니다(시편 139:13-16). 우리가 주님의 창조하심을 찬양할 때에, 주님과 함께 그리고 주님의 영광을 위해 우리가 상상하고 창조할 수 있도록 주님이 도우시는 여러 가지 방법들로 인해 또한 기뻐할 수 있습니다.

Celebrating Creativity

A rarely seen jellyfish waltzed with the currents, four thousand feet deep in the ocean near Baja, California. Its body shone with fluorescent shades of blue, purple, and pink, bright against the backdrop of black water. Elegant tentacles waved gracefully with each pulsing of its bell-shaped hood. As I watched the amazing footage of the Halitrephes maasi jellyfish on the National Geographic video, I reflected on how God chose the specific design of this beautiful, gelatinous creature. He also fashioned the other 2,000 types of jellyfish that scientists have identified as of October 2017.

Though we acknowledge God as Creator, do we slow down long enough to truly consider the profound truth revealed in the first chapter of the Bible? Our amazing God brought forth light and life into the creatively diverse world He crafted with the power of His word. He designed “the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems” (Genesis 1:21). Scientists have discovered only a fraction of the wondrous creatures the Lord created in the beginning.

God also intentionally sculpted each person in the world, giving purpose to every day of our lives before we drew our first breaths (Psalm 139:13–16). As we celebrate the Lord’s creativity, we can also rejoice over the many ways He helps us imagine and create with Him and for His glory.

우정의 표시

가나에서 어린 시절을 보낼 때 나는 사람이 붐비는 곳에서 아버지의 손을 잡고 함께 걷는 것을 좋아했습니다. 아버지는 나에게는 아버지이자 친구였습니다. 가나의 문화에서 손을 잡는다는 것은 진정한 우정의 표시이기 때문입니다. 우리는 함께 걸으며 여러 가지 이야기를 나누었습니다. 나는 외로울 때마다 아버지에게서 위로를 찾았습니다. 우리의 교제는 정말로 소중했습니다!

주 예수님은 제자들을 ‘친구’라고 부르시며 우정의 표시를 보여주셨습니다. 주님은 “아버지께서 나를 사랑하신 것 같이 나도 너희를 사랑”(요한복음 15:9)하였다고 말씀하시며 제자들을 위해 자신의 목숨을 내어주기까지 하셨습니다(13절). 주님은 제자들에게 천국의 일을 보여주셨고(15절) 하나님께서 주님에게 주신 모든 것을 알게 하셨습니다(15절). 그리고 주님의 사명을 나눌 기회를 주셨습니다(16절).

예수님은 인생의 동반자로 우리와 동행하시며 우리의 걱정거리와 염원에 귀를 기울이십니다. 그리고 우리가 외롭고 낙심될 때 친구이신 예수님이 우리 곁에 있어 주십니다.

예수님과의 교제는 우리가 서로 사랑하고 주님의 계명을 지킬 때 더욱 단단해집니다(10,17절). 주님의 명령에 순종할 때 우리는 “항상 있을 열매”(16절)를 맺을 것입니다.

어지러운 세상 속 혼잡한 골목길과 위험한 길을 지날 때 우리와 동행하시는 주님께 의지할 수 있습니다. 그것은 주님의 우정의 표시입니다.

The Marks of Friendship

As a little boy growing up in Ghana, I enjoyed holding my father’s hand and walking with him in crowded places. He was both my father and my friend, for holding hands in my culture is a mark of true friendship. Walking along, we would talk about a variety of subjects. Whenever I felt lonely, I found consolation with my father. How I valued our companionship!

The Lord Jesus called His followers friends, and He showed them the marks of His friendship. “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you,” He said (John 15:9), even laying down His life for them (v. 13). He showed them His kingdom business (v. 15). He taught them everything God had given Him (v. 15). And He gave them opportunity to share in His mission (v. 16).

As our Companion for life, Jesus walks with us. He listens to our heartaches and our desires. When we’re lonely and downhearted, our Friend Jesus keeps company with us.

And our companionship with Jesus is tighter when we love each other and obey His commands (vv. 10, 17). As we obey His commands, we will bear “fruit that will last” (v. 16).

Walking through the crowded alleys and dangerous roadways of our troubled world, we can count on the Lord’s companionship. It’s a mark of His friendship.
