그저 기다리기보다는

경찰이 학생들이 내리고 있는 스쿨버스를 기다리기 싫어서 차도를 벗어나 보도 위로 올라갔다가 다시 차도로 들어선 여자를 난폭운전으로 고발했습니다. 사실 기다릴 때 참기 힘들 수도 있지만, 기다림 속에서 배우고 할 수 있는 좋은 일도 있습니다. 예수님은 이것을 알고 제자들에게 “예루살렘을 떠나지 말고”(사도행전 1:4) 기다려 “성령으로 세례를 받으”(5절)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

제자들은 아마도 흥분과 기대에 차서 다락방에 모였겠지만, 예수님이 기다리라고 말씀하신 것이 아무것도 하지 말라는 것은 아니라는 것을 이해했던 것 같습니다. 그들은 기도하는 시간을 가졌고 (14절), 성경말씀에 근거하여 유다를 대신할 새 제자를 뽑았습니다(26절). 그들이 함께 모여 예배하고 기도할 때 성령이 그들에게 임하였습니다(2:1-4).

제자들은 그냥 기다리고만 있지 않고 준비도 하고 있었습니다. 우리가 하나님을 기다리는 것은 아무것도 하지 않는다거나 참지 못하고 성급히 앞으로 나아가는 것을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 기도하고 예배하며 즐겁게 교제하면서 주님이 행하실 일을 기대하는 것입니다. 기다리면서 우리는 다가올 일을 위해 우리의 마음과 생각과 몸을 준비할 수 있습니다.

그렇습니다. 하나님께서 기다리라고 하실 때, 우리는 기꺼워할 수 있습니다. 주님과 우리를 위해 짜놓으신 주님의 계획을 우리가 신뢰할 수 있다는 것을 알기 때문입니다!

More Than Just Waiting

Police charged a woman with reckless driving after she drove off the street and onto the sidewalk and back because she didn’t want to wait for a school bus dropping off students!

While it’s true that waiting can make us impatient, there are also good things to do and learn in the waiting. Jesus knew this when He told His disciples to “not leave Jerusalem” (ACTS 1:4). They were waiting to “be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (V 5).

As they gathered in an upper room, likely in a state of excitement and anticipation, the disciples seemed to understand that when Jesus told them to wait, He didn’t say for them to do nothing. They spent time praying (V 14); and informed by Scripture, they also chose a new disciple to replace Judas (V 26). When they were joined together in worship and prayer, the Holy Spirit descended upon them (2:1–4).

The disciples hadn’t simply been waiting—they’d also been preparing. As we wait on God, it doesn’t mean doing nothing or impatiently rushing forward. Instead we can pray, worship, and enjoy fellowship as we anticipate what He’ll do. The waiting prepares our hearts, minds, and bodies for what’s to come.

Yes, when God asks us to wait, we can be excited—knowing that we can trust Him and the plans He has for us!

이웃을 넘어

2017년 여름, 허리케인 하비가 미국 걸프코스트를 강타하여 엄청난 인명피해와 재산피해를 가져왔습니다. 많은 사람들이 당장 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 음식과 물과 옷가지, 그리고 대피 장소를 제공해주었습니다.

메릴랜드의 한 피아노 상점 주인은 즉각 뭔가를 더 해야겠다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 그는 모든 것을 잃은 사람들에게 어떻게 하면 음악으로 특별한 치유가 이루어지고 정상이라는 느낌을 갖게 해줄 수 있을까 생각해보았습니다. 그래서 그는 직원들과 함께 중고 피아노들을 손질하기 시작하면서 도움이 가장 필요한 곳이 어딘지 알아보기 시작했습니다. 그 봄에 상점 주인 딘 크래머는 아내 로이스와 함께 피아노가 있으면 좋아할 피해지역의 가정이나 교회, 학교에 무료로 나누어줄 피아노를 트럭에 가득 싣고 텍사스 주 휴스턴으로 긴 여정을 시작했습니다.

때때로 우리는 ‘이웃’이라는 말을 당연히 근처에 살고 있거나 적어도 우리가 알고 있는 사람을 가리키는 것으로 생각합니다. 그러나 누가복음 10장에서 예수님은 선한 사마리아인 비유를 통해 이웃 사랑에는 장벽이 있어서는 안 된다고 가르치셨습니다. 그 사마리아인은 부상당한 사람이 자신들과 적대 관계에 있는 집단인 유대인이었음에도 불구하고 그를 아무 거리낌 없이 도와주었습니다(25-37절).

딘 크래머에게 왜 그 모든 피아노를 그냥 주었는지에 대해 묻자, 그는 “우리는 이웃을 사랑하라고 배웠습니다.”라고 간단히 대답했습니다. 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하는 것보다 “더 큰 계명은 없다” (마가복음 12:31)고 말씀하신 분은 바로 예수님이셨습니다.

Beyond the Neighborhood

In the summer of 2017, Hurricane Harvey brought devastating losses of life and property to the Gulf Coast of the US. Many people provided food, water, clothing, and shelter for those in immediate need.

The owner of a piano store in Maryland felt prompted to do something more. He considered how music could bring a special kind of healing and sense of normalcy to people who had lost everything. So he and his staff began to refurbish pre-owned pianos and to make inquiries to see where the need was the greatest. That spring, Dean Kramer and his wife, Lois, began the long trek to Houston, Texas, driving a truck filled with free pianos to give to grateful families, churches, and schools in the ravaged area.

We sometimes assume the word neighbor means someone who lives nearby or at least is someone we know. But in Luke 10, Jesus told the parable of the good Samaritan to teach that our love for our neighbors shouldn’t have barriers. The man from Samaria freely gave to a wounded stranger, even though the man was a Jew, part of a people group at odds with the Samaritans (VV 25–37).

When Dean Kramer was asked why he gave away all those pianos, he explained simply: “We’re told to love our neighbors.” And it was Jesus who said, “There is no commandment greater” (MARK 12:31) than to love God and our neighbor.

오랜 기도

케빈은 눈물을 닦으며 나의 아내 케리에게 쪽지를 내밀며 읽어보라고 했습니다. 그는 우리 부부가 우리 딸이 예수님을 다시 믿기를 바라는 기도를 하고 있다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그는 말했습니다. “이 메모는 돌아가신 우리 어머니의 성경책에서 찾은 것인데 격려가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.” 그 메모 상단에는 “우리 아들 케빈을 위해”라고 쓰여 있었고, 그 밑에는 아들의 구원을 위한 기도가 적혀 있었습니다.

“나는 오늘도 이 쪽지를 내 성경책에 넣고 다닙니다.” 케빈은 이렇게 말하고 난 뒤, 이어서 다음과 같이 설명했습니다. “우리 어머니는 나의 구원을 위해 35년 이상을 기도하셨습니다. 나는 하나님으로부터 멀리 떠나 있었지만 지금은 믿는 사람이 되었습니다.” 그는 우리를 뚫어지게 바라 보더니 눈물을 흘리며 살짝 웃었습니다. “따님을 위한 기도를 절대 포기하지 마세요. 아무리 오래 걸릴 지라도요.”

케빈이 해준 격려의 말을 듣고 나는 누가복음에 있는 기도에 관한 예수님 말씀의 앞부분을 생각했습니다. 누가는 그 부분을 이렇게 시작하고 있습니다. “예수께서 그들에게 ‘항상 기도하고 낙심하지 말아야’ 할 것을 비유로 말씀하여”(누가복음 18:1).

이 말씀에서 예수님은 단지 더 이상 귀찮은 것이 싫어서 요청을 들어주는 “불의한 재판장”(6절)과 우리를 깊이 사랑하셔서 우리가 주님께로 오기를 원하시는 완전하신 하나님 아버지를 대비시키고 있습니다. 하나님이 우리 기도를 들으시고 기쁘게 받으신다는 것을 알면 기도할 때마다 격려가 될 수 있습니다.

Praying the Distance

Kevin wiped a tear from his eye as he held out a slip of paper for my wife, Cari, to read. He knew Cari and I were praying for our daughter to return to faith in Jesus. “This note was found in my mother’s Bible after her death, and I hope it encourages you,” he said. At the top of the note were the words, “For my son, Kevin.” Below them was a prayer for his salvation.

“I carry this with me in my own Bible today,” Kevin explained. “My mother prayed for my salvation for more than thirty-five years. I was far away from God, and I’m a believer now.” He looked intently at us and smiled through his tears: “Never give up praying for your daughter—no matter how long it takes.”

His words of encouragement made me think of the introduction to a story Jesus told about prayer in the gospel of Luke. Luke begins with the words, “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up ” (LUKE 18:1).

In the story, Jesus contrasts an “unjust judge” (V 6) who answers a request merely because he doesn’t want to be further bothered, with a perfect heavenly Father who cares deeply for us and wants us to come to Him. We can be encouraged whenever we pray to know that God hears and welcomes our prayers.

성경적 처방

그렉과 엘리자베스는 학교에 다니는 네 명의 자녀들과 정기적으로 “농담의 밤”을 가집니다. 아이들은 각기 주중에 읽거나 들었던 (혹은 스스로 꾸며낸!) 여러 가지 농담을 저녁식탁에서 이야기합니다. 이렇게 오랫동안 식탁에서 나눈 것들이 즐겁고 재미있는 추억거리가 되었습니다. 이 부부는 또한 웃는 일이 아이들에게 힘들 때 기운을 내게 해주어 건강에도 좋다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

C. S. 루이스는 저녁식탁에서의 즐거운 대화가 가져다주는 유익한 점에 대해 이렇게 썼습니다. “하늘 아래 그 어떤 좋은 것도 식사를 하며 함께 웃는 가정의 절반에도 못미친다.”

우리는 잠언 17장 22절에서 기뻐하는 마음을 키워주는 지혜를 찾아볼 수 있습니다. “마음의 즐거움은 양약이라도 심령의 근심은 뼈를 마르게 하느니라.” 이 잠언 말씀은 건강을 증진시키고 치유를 북돋아주는 “처방”이 되어 우리 마음을 기쁨으로 채워주고, 적은 비용으로 아주 좋은 결과를 얻게 해주는 양약과도 같습니다.

우리 모두에게 이와 같은 성경적 처방이 필요합니다. 기쁜 마음으로 대화를 하면 서로 맞지 않는 의견들을 더 넓은 시각에서 볼 수 있습니다. 또한 학교에서 어려운 시험을 치르면서 스트레스를 받았을 때나 직장에서 힘든 날을 보낸 후에도 평안을 누릴 수 있게 해줍니다. 가족이나 친구들과 함께 웃을 때 그곳이 우리가 사랑 받고 있다는 것을 깨닫고 느낄 수 있는 안전지대가 될 수 있습니다.

영혼에 “좋은 약”인 웃음을 당신의 삶에 더 많이 채우고 싶으십니까? 즐거운 마음을 가꾸어나갈 힘은 성경에서 얻는다는 것을 명심하십시오.

Biblical Prescription

Greg and Elizabeth have a regular “Joke Night” with their four school-age children. Each child brings several jokes they’ve read or heard (or made up themselves!) during the week to tell at the dinner table. This tradition has created joyful memories of fun shared around the table. Greg and Elizabeth even noticed the laughter was healthy for their children, lifting their spirits on difficult days.

The benefit of joyful conversation around the dinner table was observed by C. S. Lewis, who wrote, “The sun looks down on nothing half so good as a household laughing together over a meal.”

The wisdom of fostering a joyful heart is found in Proverbs 17:22, where we read, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” The proverb offers a “prescription” to stimulate health and healing—allowing joy to fill our hearts, a medicine that costs little and yields great results.

We all need this biblical prescription. When we bring joy into our conversations, it can put a disagreement into perspective. It can help us to experience peace, even after a stressful test at school or a difficult day at work. Laughter among family and friends can create a safe place where we both know and feel that we’re loved.

Do you need to incorporate more laughter into your life as “good medicine” for your spirit? Remember, you have encouragement from Scripture to cultivate a cheerful heart.

성도와 죄인

이집트의 성녀 마리아(대략 주후 344-421)가 세례 요한이 걸어간 길을 따라 사막에서 지내기 전, 그녀의 젊은 시절을 사회규범에서 벗어난 쾌락을 쫓고 남자들을 유혹하면서 지냈습니다. 난잡한 생활이 극에 달했을 때 그녀는 순례자들을 타락시킬 목적으로 예루살렘으로 갔습니다. 그러나 도리어 그녀는 자신의 죄를 깊이 깨닫고 그 이후로 광야에서 참회와 고독의 삶을 살았습니다. 마리아의 철저한 변화는 하나님의 은혜와 십자가의 회복의 능력이 얼마나 큰지를 잘 보여줍니다.

예수님의 제자 베드로는 예수님을 세 번이나 부인하였습니다. 부인하기 몇 시간 전만 해도 그는 예수님을 위해 죽음도 마다하지 않겠다고 장담했습니다 (누가복음 22:33). 그래서 그는 자신의 실패를 깨달았을 때 심한 충격을 받았습니다(61- 62절). 예수님이 죽으시고 부활하신 후 베드로가 몇몇 제자들과 함께 고기를 잡고 있을 때 예수님이 그들에게 나타나셨습니다. 예수님은 베드로에게 예수님을 부인한 횟수만큼 예수님에 대한 그의 사랑을 세 번에 걸쳐 고백할 기회를 주셨습니다(요한복음 21:1-3). 그런 다음 예수님은 베드로가 사랑한다는 말을 할 때마다 그에게 주님의 백성을 돌보는 일을 맡기셨습니다(15-17절). 주님이 보여주신 이 놀라운 은혜로 말미암아 베드로는 교회를 세우는 일에 핵심적인 역할을 감당했고, 마침내 그리스도를 위해 목숨을 바치게까지 되었습니다.

우리 중 어떤 사람들은 자신의 인생 이야기를 할 때 실패와 패배한 일들을 장황하게 늘어놓으며 시작할지도 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님의 은혜가 임하면 결말은 언제나 다르게 맺어집니다. 하나님은 그분의 은혜로 우리를 구원하시고 변화시키십니다.

Of Saints and Sinners

Before she followed in the footsteps of John the Baptist by living in the desert, Mary of Egypt (C AD 344–421) spent her youth pursuing illicit pleasures and seducing men. At the height of her sordid career, she journeyed to Jerusalem in an attempt to corrupt pilgrims. Instead, she experienced deep conviction of her sins and thereafter lived a life of repentance and solitude in the wilderness. Mary’s radical transformation illustrates the magnitude of God’s grace and the restoring power of the cross.

The disciple Peter denied Jesus three times. Only hours before the denials, Peter had declared his willingness to die for Jesus (LUKE 22:33), so the realization of his failure was a crushing blow (VV 61–62). After Jesus’s death and resurrection, Peter was fishing with some of the disciples when Jesus appeared to them. Jesus gave Peter a chance to declare his love for Him three times—one for each of his denials (JOHN 21:1–3). Then, with each declaration, Jesus charged Peter to care for His people (VV 15–17). The result of this stunning display of grace was that Peter played a key role in building the church and ultimately gave his life for Christ.

A biography of any one of us could begin with a litany of our failures and defeats. But God’s grace always allows for a different ending. By His grace, He redeems and transforms us.

삶의 고난을 이해하기

내 친구의 아버지에게 두려워했던 진단이 내려졌습니다. 암이었습니다. 그러나 화학 요법을 받는 중에 그는 예수님을 믿는 신자가 되었고, 나중에는 그의 병세도 차도를 보여 놀랍게도 18개월 동안 암세포가 보이지 않았습니다. 그런데 암이 재발하여 이전보다 더 악화되었습니다. 그와 그의 아내는 암이 재발한 현실에 걱정과 의문도 생겼지만, 동시에 하나님을 믿는 신실한 믿음으로 그 현실을 받아들였습니다. 처음 발병했을 때 하나님께서 그들을 어떻게 줄곧 돌봐 오셨는지를 알았기 때문입니다.

우리는 우리가 왜 시련을 겪는지 언제나 이해하지는 못합니다. 참혹하고 도저히 설명할 수 없는 고난과 상실을 겪었던 욥의 경우가 분명히 그랬습니다. 그러나 수많은 질문을 하면서도 그는 욥기 12장에서 하나님이 능력 있는 분이심을 이렇게 선포합니다. “그가 헐으신즉 다시 세울 수 없고”(14절) “능력과 지혜가 그에게 있고”(16절) “민족들을 커지게도 하시고 다시 멸하기도 하시며”(23절). 이렇게 길게 나열하는 가운데에도 욥은 하나님이 고통이나 고난을 허락하신 동기나 이유에 관해서는 언급하지도 않고 그 해답도 갖고 있지 않습니다. 그러나 이 모든 것에도 불구하고 욥은 “지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있고 계략과 명철도 그에게 속하였다”(13절) 고 확신 있게 말하고 있습니다.

우리는 하나님이 왜 우리 삶에 역경을 허락하시는지 이해 못할 수도 있지만, 내 친구의 부모님처럼 우리도 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 주님은 우리를 사랑하시고 우리를 그분의 손 안에 두십니다(10절; 베드로전서 5:7). 지혜와 능력과 명철이 다 주님의 것입니다!

Understanding Life’s Trials

My friend’s father received the dreaded diagnosis: cancer. Yet, during the chemo treatment process, he became a believer in Jesus and his disease eventually went into remission. He was cancer free for a wonderful eighteen months, but it returned—worse than before. He and his wife faced the reality of the returned cancer with concern and questions but also with a faithful trust in God because of how He saw them through the first time.

We won’t always understand why we’re going through trials. This was certainly the case for Job, who faced horrendous and unexplainable suffering and loss. Yet despite his many questions, in Job 12 he declares that God is mighty: “What he tears down cannot be rebuilt” (V 14) and “to him belong strength and insight” (V 16). “He makes nations great, and destroys them” (V 23). Throughout this extensive list, Job doesn’t mention God’s motives or why He allows pain and suffering. Job doesn’t have the answers. But still despite everything, he confidently says, “to God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his” (V 13).

We may not understand why God allows certain struggles in our lives, but like my friend’s parents, we can put our trust in Him. The Lord loves us and has us in His hands (V 10; 1 PETER 5:7). Wisdom, power, and understanding are His!

고고학자 워윅 로드웰 박사는 은퇴를 준비하던 중 영국의 리치필드 대성당에서 엄청난 발견을 했습니다. 건축업자들이 접이식기초를 만들기 위해 교회 바닥의 일부를 조심스럽게 파다가 1200년 된 것으로 추정되는 천사장 가브리엘의 조각상을 발견한 것입니다. 이 발견으로 인해 흥미진진하고 바쁜 새로운 국면으로 들어가게 된 로드웰 박사의 은퇴 계획은 보류되었습니다.

God’s Retirement Plan

Archaeologist Dr. Warwick Rodwell was preparing to retire when he made an extraordinary discovery at Lichfield Cathedral in England. As builders carefully excavated part of the floor of the church to make way for a retractable base, they discovered a sculpture of the archangel Gabriel, thought to be 1,200 years old. Dr. Rodwell’s retirement plans were put on hold as his find launched him into an exciting and busy new season.

Moses was eighty years old when he made a fiery discovery that would forever alter his life. Though the adopted son of an Egyptian princess, he never forgot his Hebrew lineage and raged at the injustice he witnessed against his kinsmen (Exodus 2:11–12). When Pharaoh learned that Moses had killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew, he planned to have him killed, forcing Moses to flee to Midian, where he settled (vv. 13–15).

Forty years later, when he was eighty, Moses was tending his father-in-law’s flock when “the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up” (3:2). In that moment, God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery (vv. 3–22).

아름다움을 즐기기

그 그림은 마치 신호 불빛 같이 나의 시선을 사로잡았습니다. 큰 시립병원의 긴 복도를 따라 전시되어 있던 그 그림은 진한 파스텔 색감과 아메리카 원주민 나바호족의 형상이 너무 매력적이어서 나는 멈춰 서서 경이롭게 쳐다보았습니다. “이것 좀 봐요,” 남편 댄에게 말했습니다.

그는 앞서 걸어가고 있었습니다. 하지만 나는 머뭇거리면서 벽에 있는 다른 그림들은 그냥 무시한 채 오직 그 그림만을 바라보면서 “아름다워.”라고 혼자 속삭였습니다.

사실 삶 속의 많은 것들이 아름답습니다. 명작 그림들, 아름다운 경치들, 영감 받은 공예품들. 그리고 아이의 미소, 친구의 안부 인사, 울새의 파란 알, 조개의 굵은 굴곡들도 역시 그렇습니다. 삶이 가져다주는 짐을 가볍게 하시려고 “하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨습니다” (전도서 3:11). 성경학자들은 이런 아름다움 속에서 우리가 앞으로 경험할 하나님의 완전한 통치의 영광을 포함해서 하나님의 창조의 완벽함을 잠시 엿볼 수 있다고 설명합니다.

그런 완벽함은 우리에게는 상상에 그칠 수밖에 없으므로 하나님이 삶의 아름다움을 통해서 미리 그것을 맛보게 하셨습니다. 그래서 하나님은 “사람들에게 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨습니다”(11절). 어떤 때는 삶이 단조롭고 헛되어 보이기도 하지만, 하나님은 깊이 생각할 수 있는 아름다운 순간들을 은혜로 주십니다.

내가 감탄했던 그 그림을 그린 화가 제라드 커티스 딜라노는 이 점을 이해했습니다. 그는 전에 “하나님께서 저에게 아름다움을 창작할 수 있는 재능을 주셨습니다, 그리고 이것이 그분께서 제가 하기를 원하시는 것입니다.”라고 말했습니다.

그런 아름다움을 보면서 우리는 어떻게 반응할 수 있을까요? 우리는 우리가 이미 보고 있는 영광을 잠시 누리면서 앞으로 올 영원을 바라보며 하나님께 감사드릴 수 있습니다.

Enjoying Beauty

The painting caught my eye like a beacon. Displayed along a long hallway in a big city hospital, its deep pastel hues and Navajo Native American figures were so arresting I stopped to marvel and stare. “Look at that,” I said to my husband, Dan.

He was walking ahead but I hesitated, bypassing other paintings on the wall to gaze only at that one. “Beautiful,” I whispered.

Many things in life are beautiful indeed. Master paintings. Scenic vistas. Inspired crafts. But so is a child’s smile. A friend’s hello. A robin’s blue egg. A seashell’s strong ridges. To relieve the burdens life can bring, “[God] has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). In such beauty, Bible scholars explain, we get a glimpse of the perfection of God’s creation—including the glory of His perfect rule to come.

We can only imagine such perfection, so God grants us a foretaste through life’s beauty. In this way, God “has also set eternity in the human heart” (v. 11). Some days life looks drab and futile. But God mercifully provides moments of beauty to ponder.

The artist of the painting I admired, Gerard Curtis Delano, understood that. “God [gave] me a talent to create beauty,” he once said, “and this is what He wanted me to do.”

Seeing such beauty, how can we respond? We can thank God for eternity to come while pausing to enjoy the glory we already see.

하나님이 보고 계신다

아침 일찍 나는 우리 집 뒤쪽으로 황무지가 내려다보이는 거실 창문 옆을 조용히 걸어 지나갑니다. 종종 매나 올빼미가 나뭇가지에 앉아 그 황무지를 바라보고 있는 것이 보이곤 합니다. 어느 날 아침 흰머리 독수리 한 마리가 높은 가지 위에 당당히 균형을 잡고 앉아 넓은 지역이 다 그의 것인 양 주위의 지형을 살피고 있는 것을 보고 놀랐습니다. 아마도 “아침 식사거리”를 찾고 있는 것 같았는데, 모든 것을 둘러보는 그 모습이 마치 제왕 같이 당당해 보였습니다.

역대하 16장에서 선견자(하나님의 선지자) 하나니는 왕에게 하나님이 왕의 행동을 다 지켜보고 계신다고 일러 주었습니다. 그는 유다왕 아사에게 “왕이 아람왕을 의지하고 왕의 하나님 여호와를 의지하지 아니하였다”(7절)고 말하고 나서, “여호와의 눈은 온 땅을 두루 감찰하사 전심으로 자기에게 향하는 자를 위하여 능력을 베푸신다”(9절)고 말했습니다. 아사가 다른 것을 잘못 의지했기 때문에 그에게 전쟁이 계속 있었던 것입니다.

이 말씀을 읽으면서 우리는 새가 먹이를 덮치는 것 같이 하나님이 우리의 모든 행동을 주시하고 있다고 잘못 생각할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나니의 말은 긍정적인 면에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 그의 요점은 하나님이 우리를 계속 지켜보고 계시며 우리가 어려움에 처했을 때 하나님을 찾기를 기다리고 계신다는 것입니다.

마치 뒤뜰의 흰머리 독수리같이 하나님의 눈은 지금 이 시간에도 이 세상을 두루 살피시며 우리 속에서 충실함을 찾고 계십니다. 우리에게 필요한 도움과 소망을 하나님은 어떻게 공급하실까요?

What God Sees

Early in the morning, I quietly pad past a family-room window overlooking a wilderness area behind our house. Often, I notice a hawk or owl perched in a tree, keeping watch over the area. One morning I was surprised to find a bald eagle boldly balanced on a high branch, surveying the terrain as if the entire expanse belonged to him. Likely he was watching for “breakfast.” His all-inclusive gaze seemed regal.

In 2 Chronicles 16, Hanani the seer (God’s prophet) informed a king that his actions were under a royal gaze. He told Asa, king of Judah, “You relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God” (v. 7). Then Hanani explained, “The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (v. 9). Because of Asa’s misplaced dependence, he would always be at war.

Reading these words, we might get the false sense that God watches our every move so He can pounce on us like a bird of prey. But Hanani’s words focus on the positive. His point is that our God continually watches and waits for us to call on Him when we’re in need.

Like my backyard bald eagle, how might God’s eyes be roaming our world—even now—looking to find faithfulness in you and me? How might He provide the hope and help we need?

어제와 같지 않다

우리 손자 제이가 어렸을 때 아이 부모가 생일 선물로 새 티셔츠를 주었습니다. 아이는 그것을 바로 입고는 하루 종일 자랑스럽게 입고 다녔습니다. 다음 날 아침에도 아이가 티셔츠를 입고 나타나자 아빠가 “제이, 그 셔츠 입으니 좋아?”라고 물었습니다.

제이는 “어제 만큼은 아니에요.”라고 대답했습니다.

물질을 얻을 때 생기는 문제가 바로 그런 것입니다. 우리 삶에 아무리 좋은 것이라도 우리가 그렇게 간절히 바라는 심오하고 오래 지속되는 행복을 가져다주지 못합니다. 우리가 물질적으로 많이 소유하고 있다 할지라도 여전히 불행할 수 있습니다.

세상은 새 옷이나 새 차, 새로운 모델의 전화기나 손목시계 등, 물질을 많이 소유하는 것으로 행복을 주겠다고 합니다. 그러나 어떤 물건을 얻더라도 어제만큼 행복하게 해주지 못합니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 하나님을 위하여 창조되었고 그 어떤 것도 하나님을 대신할 수 없기 때문입니다.

어느 날 예수님이 금식하시고 굶주려 약해지셨을 때 사탄이 주님께 다가와 빵을 만들어 배고픈 것을 채우라고 유혹했습니다. 그때 예수님은 신명기 8장 3절 말씀을 인용하며 대응하셨습니다. “사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니요 하나님의 입으로부터 나오는 모든 말씀으로 살 것이라”(마태복음 4:4).

예수님은 우리가 빵으로만 살아야 하는 것이 아니라, 그보다는 우리가 영적인 존재이기 때문에 물질만 가지고 존재할 수 없다는 사실을 말씀하시고 있는 것입니다.

진정한 만족은 하나님과 그분의 풍성하심 안에서 얻을 수 있습니다.

Not Like Yesterday

When our grandson Jay was a child his parents gave him a new T-shirt for his birthday. He put it on right away and proudly wore it all day.

When he appeared the next morning in the shirt, his dad asked him, “Jay, does that shirt make you happy?”

“Not as much as yesterday,” Jay replied.

That’s the problem with material acquisition: Even the good things of life can’t give us the deep, lasting happiness we so strongly desire. Though we may have many possessions, we may still be unhappy.

The world offers happiness through material accumulation: new clothes, a new automobile, an update to our phone or watch. But no material acquisition can make us as happy as it did yesterday. That’s because we were made for God and nothing less will do.

One day, when Jesus was fasting and faint with hunger, Satan approached Him and tempted Him to satisfy His hunger by creating bread. Jesus countered by quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

Jesus didn’t mean that we should live only on bread. He’s rather stating a fact: We’re spiritual beings and thus we can’t exist on material goods alone.

True satisfaction is found in God and His riches.
