믿음의 유산

빌리 그래함이 16세 때 결정적으로 그리스도를 믿게 된 데에는 그보다 훨씬 전부터 예수님께 온전히 헌신하였던 부모님이 계셨습니다. 그들은 둘 다 믿는 가정에서 자라면서 신앙을 갖게 되었습니다. 빌리의 부모는 결혼 후에도 자녀들과 함께 기도하고 성경을 읽고 성실하게 교회에 출석하는 등, 사랑으로 자녀들을 양육하면서 신앙의 대물림을 하였습니다. 빌리 그래함의 부모가 아들 빌리를 위해 다져놓은 견고한 기초는 하나님께서 그에게 믿음을 심어주고 마침내 담대한 복음전도자로 부르시기 위해 사용하셨던 토양의 일부였습니다.

바울 사도의 젊은 제자 디모데도 든든한 영적 기반을 물려받았습니다. 바울은 “네 속에 거짓이 없는......믿음은 먼저 네 외조모 로이스와 네 어머니 유니게 속에 있더니”(디모데후서 1:5)라고 썼습니다. 이 유산이 디모데가 그리스도를 믿도록 마음을 준비하고 앞으로 나아가는데 도움을 주었습니다.

이제 바울은 디모데에게 그 믿음의 전통을 이어나가(5절), “우리에게......능력을 주시는” 성령을 통해 디모데 안에 있는 “하나님의 은사를 다시 불일 듯하게 하라”고 독려합니다(6-7절). 성령의 능력으로 디모데는 두려움 없이 복음을 위해 살아갈 수 있었습니다(8절). 든든한 영적 유산이 있다고 해서 우리의 믿음이 보장되는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 다른 사람들의 본을 따르고 조언을 듣는 것이 그 길을 준비하는데 도움이 됩니다. 그리고 예수님을 구주로 영접하면 그 다음 성령께서 우리를 섬김의 길로, 주님을 위한 삶으로, 그리고 다른 사람들의 믿음을 자라게 하는 데로 인도하실 것입니다.

A Legacy of Faith

Long before the decisive moment when Billy Graham came to faith in Christ at age sixteen, his parents’ devotion to Jesus was evident. They’d both come to faith while growing up within a family of believers. After their marriage, Billy’s parents continued that legacy by lovingly nurturing their children, including praying and reading Scripture and attending church faithfully with them. The solid foundation Graham’s parents laid for Billy was part of the soil God used to bring him to faith and, eventually, to his calling as a bold evangelist.

The apostle Paul’s young protégée Timothy also benefited from a strong spiritual foundation. Paul wrote, “Your sincere faith . . . first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice” (2 TIMOTHY 1:5). This legacy helped prepare and steer Timothy’s heart toward faith in Christ.

Now Paul urged Timothy to carry on this faith tradition (V 5), to “fan into flame the gift of God” within him through the Holy Spirit, who “gives us power” (VV 6–7). Because of the power of the Spirit, Timothy could fearlessly live for the gospel (V 8). A strong spiritual legacy doesn’t guarantee we’ll come to faith, but the example and mentoring of others can help prepare the way. And after we receive Jesus as Savior, the Spirit will guide us in service, in living for Him, and even in nurturing the faith of others.- ALYSON KIEDA

다시 전쟁터로

그 여자는 어렸을 때 자기 부모에게 잔인한 말들을 마구 해댔습니다. 그녀는 그 말들이 자기가 부모님과 주고받은 마지막 말이 되리라고는 꿈에도 생각지 했습니다. 그녀는 여러 해 상담을 받아왔지만 지금까지도 자신을 용서하지 못합니다. 죄책감과 후회로 아무것도 못하고 있습니다.

우리 모두는 후회를 안고 살아갑니다. 그 중에는 매우 아픈 후회도 있습니다. 그러나 성경은 우리에게 죄책감을 이기고 나갈 수 있는 길이 있음을 보여줍니다. 한 가지 예를 봅시다.

성경은 다윗왕의 행적을 있는 그대로 보여줍니다. 당시는 “왕들이 출전할 때” 였지만 “다윗은 예루살렘에 그대로 있었습니다”(사무엘하 11:1). 전쟁터에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 다윗은 다른 남자의 아내를 은밀히 범하고는 이를 감추려 살인죄까지 범했습니다(2-5,14-15절). 하나님께서 다윗의 추락을 막아주기는 하셨지만(12:1-13) 왕은 자신의 죄를 의식하며 남은 생을 살아가야 했습니다.

다윗이 무너진 자신의 모습에서 다시 일어서고 있을 때 부하 장군 요압은 다윗이 지휘해야 했던 전투에서 승리하고 있었습니다 (12:26). 요압은 다윗에게 다음과 같이 요구하였습니다. “이제 왕은 그 백성의 남은 군사를 모아 그 성에 맞서 진 치고 이 성을 쳐서 점령하소서”(28절). 마침내 다윗은 하나님이 정해주신 자리인 나라와 군대의 지도자로 다시 돌아갔습니다(29절).

과거의 일로 우리 스스로를 망가뜨린다면 그것은 사실 하나님께 그분의 은혜로는 충분치 않다고 말하는 것과 같습니다. 우리가 이전에 무엇을 했든, 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리를 완전히 용서해주십니다. 우리도 다윗처럼 넘치는 은혜를 입어 전쟁터로 다시 돌아갈 수 있습니다.

Back in the Battle

As a child, she had hurled vicious words at her parents. Little did she know that those words would be her last interaction with them. Now, even after years of counseling, she can’t forgive herself. Guilt and regret paralyze her.

We all live with regrets—some of them quite terrible. But the Bible shows us a way through the guilt. Let’s look at one example.

There’s no sugarcoating what King David did. It was the time “when kings go off to war,” but “David remained in Jerusalem” (2 SAMUEL 11:1). Away from the battle, he stole another man’s wife and tried to cover it up with murder (VV 2–5, 14–15). God stopped David’s downward plunge (12:1–13), but the king would live the rest of his life with the knowledge of his sins.

While David was rising from the ashes, his general, Joab, was winning the battle David should have been leading (12:26). Joab challenged David, “Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it” (V 28). David finally got back to his God-appointed place as the leader of his nation and his army (V 29).

When we permit our past to crush us, in effect we’re telling God His grace isn’t enough. Regardless of what we’ve done, our Father extends His complete forgiveness to us. We can find, as David did, grace enough to get back in the battle. - TIM GUSTAFSON

돌아오시겠습니까?

론과 낸시의 결혼생활이 급격히 나빠지고 있었습니다. 낸시가 외도를 한 것입니다. 그러나 얼마 후 그녀는 하나님께 자신의 죄를 자백했습니다. 낸시는 하나님께서 자기가 어떻게 하기를 원하시는지를 알았지만 그것이 쉽지는 않았습니다. 마침내 그녀는 남편 론에게 사실을 고백했습니다. 론은 이혼을 요구하지 않고 대신 낸시에게 그녀의 변화된 모습을 보여주어 그의 신뢰를 회복할 수 있는 기회를 주기로 하였습니다. 하나님은 기적과도 같이 그들의 결혼생활을 회복시켜주셨습니다.

론의 행동은 우리 같은 죄인들에게 보여주신 하나님의 사랑과 용서의 모습을 그대로 보여줍니다. 호세아 선지자는 그것을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그는 하나님으로부터 음란한 여자와 결혼하라는 명령을 받았습니다. 이것은 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님 앞에서 음란한 백성처럼 살고 있음을 보여주기 위해서였습니다(호세아 1장). 이 억장이 무너지는 일도 모자라 하나님은 호세아의 아내가 남편을 버리고 떠나자 그에게 아내를 찾아가 다시 돌아오라 하라고 말씀하셨습니다. “너는 또 가서 타인의 사랑을 받아 음녀가 된 그 여자를 사랑하라”(3:1). 이스라엘 백성들의 온갖 불순종에도 불구하고 하나님은 자기 백성들과 친밀한 관계를 지키기를 간절히 바라셨습니다. 호세아가 음란한 아내를 사랑하고 붙잡으려 뒤따라가며 아내를 위해 희생한 것과 똑같이 하나님도 자기 백성들을 사랑하셨습니다. 하나님의 의로운 분노와 질투는 모두 하나님의 크신 사랑에서 비롯된 것이었습니다.

바로 이 하나님께서 오늘 우리가 그분과 가까이 하기를 간절히 바라고 계십니다. 우리가 믿음으로 하나님께로 나아갈 때 그분 안에 온전한 만족이 있음을 믿을 수 있습니다.

Will You Come Back?

Ron and Nancy’s marriage was deteriorating rapidly. She had an affair, but after some time she admitted her sin to God. She knew what He wanted her to do, but it was difficult. She shared the truth with Ron. Instead of asking for a divorce, Ron chose to give Nancy a chance to win his trust back by showing that she’d changed. In a miraculous way God restored their marriage.

Ron’s actions are a picture of God’s love and forgiveness shown toward sinners like you and me. The prophet Hosea understood this well. He was commanded by God to marry an unfaithful woman as a way to show Israel their status of unfaithfulness before Him (HOSEA 1). If that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, when Hosea’s wife left him, God told him to ask her to come back. He said, “Show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress” (3:1). After all their disobedience, God longed for a close relationship with His people. Just as Hosea loved his unfaithful wife, pursued her, and sacrificed for her, so God loved His people. His righteous anger and jealousy were motivated by His great love.

This same God longs for us today to be near Him. As we come to Him in faith, we can trust that in Him we will find complete fulfillment. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

떡과 생선

한 남자아이가 집에 와서는 교회에서 배운 것을 아주 신이 나서 이야기했습니다. “하루 종일 빈둥거리며 낚시질을 했던” 남자아이에 관한 이야기였습니다. 물론 진짜는 떡 몇 개와 물고기를 예수님께 드렸던 아이에 대한 이야기를 하고 싶었던 것이지만요.

예수님이 하루 종일 무리들을 가르치시는데 제자들이 예수님께 무리들을 마을로 보내어 먹을 것을 사먹게 하라고 권했습니다. 그러자 예수님은 “너희가 먹을 것을 주라”(마태복음 14:16)고 대답하셨습니다. 제자들은 난처했습니다. 먹여야 할 사람들이 오천 명이 넘었기 때문입니다.

이 이야기의 나머지 부분은 다 아실 것입니다. 한 아이가 자기의 점심식사로 가져온 작은 떡 다섯 덩어리와 물고기 두 마리를 내어놓자 예수님이 그것으로 무리들을 다 먹이셨습니다 (13-21절). 어떤 학자들은 그 아이의 자원하는 행동에 다른 사람들도 감동을 받아 자기들 점심을 나누어 먹은 것이라고 주장합니다. 그러나 마태는 분명히 이 사건이 기적이었음을 말해주려 하고 있고, 이 이야기는 네 복음서에 모두 나타나 있습니다.

여기서 우리가 배울 수 있는 것은 무엇일까요? 가족이나 이웃, 친구, 동료, 그리고 그 외의 사람들이 각기 그 정도는 달라도 무언가 우리의 도움을 필요로 하면서 우리 주위에 서 있습니다. 우리는 이 사람들을 우리보다 능력이 많은 사람들에게로 보내야 할까요? 분명 어떤 사람들은 우리가 도와주기에 능력에 부칠 수도 있겠지만 항상 그렇지는 않습니다. 안아주거나 친절히 말하거나 귀 기울여 들어주거나 간단히 기도해주거나 그동안 지녀온 어떤 지혜를 말해주는 등, 우리가 할 수 있는 것이 무엇이든 예수님께 드리십시오. 그런 다음 주님께서 어떻게 하시는지 지켜보십시오.

Loaves and Fishes

A young boy came home from church and announced with great excitement that the lesson had been about a boy who “loafed and fished all day.” He, of course, was thinking of the little boy who offered his loaves and fish to Jesus.

Jesus had been teaching the crowds all day, and the disciples suggested He send them into the village to buy bread. Jesus replied, “You give them something to eat” (MATTHEW 14:16). The disciples were perplexed for there were more than 5,000 to be fed!

You may know the rest of the story: a boy gave his lunch—five small loaves of bread and two fish and with it Jesus fed the crowd (VV 13–21). One school of thought contends that the boy’s generosity simply moved others in the crowd to share their lunches, but Matthew clearly intends us to understand that this was a miracle, and the story appears in all four gospels.

What can we learn? Family, neighbors, friends, colleagues, and others stand around us in varying degrees of need. Should we send them away to those who are more capable than we are? Certainly, some people’s needs exceed our ability to help them, but not always. Whatever you have—a hug, a kind word, a listening ear, a brief prayer, some wisdom you’ve gathered give it to Jesus and see what He can do. - DAVID H. ROPER

1900 년대 초에 패커드 자동차회사가 구매자를 끌어들이기 위한 광고 문구를 만들었습니다. “주인에게 물어보세요” 라는 강력한 문구는 그 당시 시장을 지배하던 고급자동차 제조사로서의 명성을 높이는 데 크게 기여했습니다. 패커드사는 개인의 경험을 이야기하는 것이 듣는 사람들에게 강하게 먹혀 들어간다는 것을 알았던 것 같습니다. 이를테면 한 친구가 어떤 차에 대해 만족한다고 말해주면 그것이 강력한 보증이 된다는 것입니다.

우리에게 베풀어주신 하나님의 선하심을 개인적으로 체험한 것을 다른 사람들에게 전해주는 것도 효과가 큽니다. 하나님은 우리의 감사와 기쁨을 하나님뿐만 아니라 주위 사람들에게도 주저 없이 말하라고 하십니다 (시편 66:1). 이 시편 기자는 자기가 죄에서 돌아섰을 때 하나님께서 용서하신 것을 간절한 노래로 표현했습니다(18-20절).

하나님은 홍해를 가르시는 것 같이(6절) 역사 속에서 놀라운 일들을 행하기도 하셨지만, 고난 가운데 소망을 주시고, 성령을 주셔서 주님의 말씀을 알게 하시며, 매일의 필요한 것을 공급해주시는 등, 우리 각자의 삶속에서도 놀라운 일들을 행하고 계십니다. 우리의 삶 속에서 하나님께서 행하시는 것을 개인적으로 체험하여 그것을 다른 사람들과 나누는 것은 어떤 물건을 살 때 보증해주는 것보다 훨씬 더 값진 일을 하는 것입니다. 그것은 우리가 하나님의 선하심을 인정하고, 살아가면서 서로에게 힘이 되어준다는 것입니다.

Ask the Man Who Owns One

In the early 1900s, the Packard Motor Car Company generated a slogan to entice buyers. “Ask the man who owns one” became a powerful tagline, one that contributed to the company’s reputation as manufacturing the dominant luxury vehicle in that era. What Packard seemed to understand is that personal testimony is compelling to the hearer: a friend’s satisfaction with a product is a powerful endorsement.

Sharing with others our personal experiences of God’s goodness to us also makes an impact. God invites us to declare our gratitude and joy not only to Him but also to those around us (PSALM 66:1). The psalmist eagerly shared in his song the forgiveness God granted him when he turned from his sins (VV 18–20).

God has done amazing works in the course of history, such as parting the waters of the Red Sea (V 6). He also does amazing work in each of our personal lives: giving us hope in the midst of suffering, giving us the Holy Spirit to understand His Word, and providing for our daily needs. When we share with others our personal experiences of God’s work in our lives, we’re giving something of much greater value than an endorsement of a particular purchase—we’re acknowledging God’s goodness and encouraging one another along the journey of life. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

사랑이냐 돈이냐

아일랜드 시인 오스카 와일드가 이런 말을 했습니다. “젊었을 때는 돈이 인생에서 가장 중요하다고 생각했었다. 이제 나이가 들고 보니 그게 사실임을 알겠다.” 이 말은 농담으로 한 말입니다. 사실 46세까지밖에 살지 못했던 그는 “나이 들었다”고 할 수가 없었습니다. 와일드는 인생에 돈이 전부가 아니라는 것을 너무나 잘 알고 있었습니다.

돈은 잠깐 있는 것이고 있다가도 없어집니다. 따라서 우리의 삶은 돈이나 돈으로 살 수 있는 것 이상으로 의미 있는 것이 되어야 합니다. 예수님은 그 당시 사람들에게 부자나 가난한 사람이나 다같이 가치관을 새로 정립하라고 하셨습니다. 누가복음 12장 15절에서 예수님은 “삼가 모든 탐심을 물리치라 사람의 생명이 그 소유의 넉넉한 데 있지 아니하니라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. ‘더 많은 것, 더 새로운 것, 더 좋은 것’에 언제나 관심이 쏠려 있는 우리 문화 속에서, 만족한다는 것과 돈과 소유를 바라보는 관점에 대해 한 번 생각해볼 필요가 있습니다.

한 젊은 부자 관리가 예수님을 만난 후 근심하며 떠나갔습니다. 자신의 많은 재산을 포기하고 싶지 않았기 때문이었습니다(누가복음 18:18-25 참조). 그러나 세리 삭개오는 한 평생 모은 것의 상당 부분을 그냥 내어주었습니다(누가복음 19:8). 이 차이는 그리스도의 마음을 품느냐 아니냐에 있습니다. 주님의 은혜 안에서 우리는 소유물에 대한 건강한 시각을 갖게 되고, 그럼으로써 우리의 소유물이 우리를 소유하지 못하게 됩니다.

For Love or Money

Irish poet Oscar Wilde said, “When I was young I thought that money was the most important thing in life; now that I am old I know that it is.” His comment was made tongue-in-cheek; he lived only to age forty-six, so he never truly was “old.” Wilde fully understood that life is not about money.

Money is temporary; it comes and it goes. So life must be about more than money and what it can buy. Jesus challenged the people of His generation—rich and poor alike—to a recalibrated value system. In Luke 12:15, Jesus said, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” In our culture, where there’s an abiding focus on more and newer and better , there’s something to be said both for contentment and for perspective about how we view money and possessions.

Upon meeting Jesus, a rich young ruler went away sad because he had many possessions he didn’t want to give up (SEE LUKE 18:18–25), but Zacchaeus the tax collector gave away much of what he’d spent his life acquiring (LUKE 19:8). The difference is embracing the heart of Christ. In His grace, we can find a healthy perspective on the things we possess—so they don’t become the things that have us. BILL CROWDER

폐품을 수집하는 그 사람의 집은 보고타의 빈민지역의 가파른 길 맨 꼭대기에 위치하고 있습니다. 콜롬비아의 수도 안에 전혀 특별해 보이지 않는 이 평범한 주거지에는 무료로 이용할 수 있는 책 25,000권이 소장되어 있습니다. 이것은 다 버려진 책들을 호세 알베르토 구티에레즈가 자기 지역의 가난한 아이들이 읽으라고 수집한 것들입니다.

주말에 “도서관 이용시간”이 되면 동네 아이들이 이 집으로 몰려옵니다. 책으로 가득 채워져 있는 각 방들을 돌아다니며 아이들은 이 허름한 집을 그냥 호세 아저씨의 집이라 생각하지 않습니다. 그것은 이루 말할 수 없이 소중한 보물의 집인 것입니다.

그리스도를 따르는 모든 이들도 이와 같습니다. 보잘것없는 진흙으로 빚어진 우리는 금이 가고 쉽게 부서집니다. 그러나 하나님께서 상하고 망가진 세상에 그리스도의 복음을 전하게 하는 권능의 성령이 머무는 집으로 우리를 믿고 정하셨습니다. 평범하고 망가지기 쉬운 사람들에게 그 일은 매우 큰 사명입니다.

바울 사도는 옛 도시 고린도에서 “우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라”(고린도후서 4:7)고 성도들에게 말했습니다. 바울은 그들도 그 지역 사람들의 성향을 그대로 지니고 있기 때문에 많은 사람들이 “[그들] 자신을 전파하려는” 충동에 쉽게 빠질 수 있다고 했습니다(5절).

그러나 바울은 오히려 우리 안에 사시는 존귀하신 그분에 대해 사람들에게 전하라고 말합니다. 우리의 평범한 삶을 말할 수 없이 소중한 보고로 바꾸는 것은 바로 그분, 그리고 모든 것을 능가하시는 그분의 권능입니다.

From Trash to Treasure

The trash man’s house sits atop a steep street in a poor Bogota neighborhood. Not one thing about it looks special. Yet the unassuming abode in Colombia’s capital is home to a free library of 25,000 books—discarded literature that Jose Alberto Gutierrez collected to share with poor children in his community.

Local kids crowd into the house during weekend “library hours.” Prowling through every room, each packed with books, the children recognize the humble home as more than Señor Jose’s house— it’s a priceless treasury.

The same is true for every follower of Christ. We’re made of humble clay—marred by cracks and easily broken. But we’re entrusted by God as a home for His empowering Spirit, who enables us to carry the good news of Christ into a hurting, broken world. It’s a big job for ordinary, fragile people.

“We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:7), the apostle Paul told his congregation in the ancient city of Corinth. They were a cross section of people from across this region, so many might have been tempted to “go around preaching about [them]selves,” Paul said (V 5 NLT ).

Instead, Paul said, tell others about the priceless One living inside of us. It’s Him and His all-surpassing power that turns our ordinary lives into a priceless treasury. - PATRICIA RAYBON

불도그와 스프링클러

여름철이 되면 거의 매일 아침 우리 집 뒤에 있는 공원에서 한 편의 유쾌한 드라마가 펼쳐집니다. 거기에는 스프링클러와 불도그 한 마리가 등장합니다. 6시 반 쯤 되면 스프링클러가 돌아가고 잠시 후에 불도그 피피(우리 가족이 지어준 이름) 가 도착합니다.

피피의 주인이 끈 을 풀어주면 불도그는 온 힘을 다해 가장 가까운 스프링클러로 달려가 물줄기에 달려 들어 얼굴을 흠뻑 적십니다. 피피가 스프링클러를 먹을 수만 있다면 아마도 먹을 것 같습니다. 이 장면은 피피가 물에 대해 결코 질리지 않고 흠뻑 젖어보고 싶어 하는, 무언가로 완전히 채우고자 하는 한없는 욕구를 보여줍니다.

성경에는 불도그도 스프링클러도 등장하지 않습니다. 그러나 어떤 면에서 에베소서 3장에 있는 바울의 기도는 피피를 생각나게 합니다. 바울은 그의 기도에서 에베소 교회 성도들이 하나님의 사랑으로 가득 채워져 “능히 모든 성도와 함께 지식에 넘치는 그리스도의 사랑을 알고 그 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠함을 깨달아” 우리가 “하나님의 모든 충만하신 것으로 충만하게” 되기를 기도하고 있습니다(18-19절).

오늘날까지도 우리는 다 이해할 수 없는 무한한 사랑의 하나님을 경험하여 그분의 선하심에 흠뻑 젖고 채워져 온전한 기쁨을 누리라는 초대를 받고 있습니다. 우리는 우리 마음과 삶을 사랑과 의미와 목적으로 채우실 수 있는 유일하신 그분과의 관계 속으로 자유롭고 즐겁고 기쁜 마음으로 뛰어들 수 있습니다.

The Bulldog and the Sprinkler

Most summer mornings, a delightful drama plays out in the park behind our house. It involves a sprinkler. And a bulldog. About 6:30 or so, the sprinklers come on. Shortly thereafter, Fifi the bulldog (our family’s name for her) arrives.

Fifi’s owner lets her off her leash. The bulldog sprints with all her might to the nearest sprinkler, attacking the stream of water as it douses her face. If Fifi could eat the sprinkler, I think she would. It’s a portrait of utter exuberance, of Fifi’s seemingly infinite desire to be drenched by the liquid she can never get enough of.

There are no bulldogs in the Bible, or sprinklers. Yet, in a way, Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3 reminds me of Fifi. There, Paul prays that the Ephesian believers might be filled with God’s love and “have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” He prayed that we might be “filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (VV 18–19).

Still today, we’re invited to experience a God whose infinite love exceeds anything we can comprehend, that we too might be drenched, saturated, and utterly satisfied by His goodness. We’re free to plunge with abandon, relish, and delight into a relationship with the One who alone can fill our hearts and lives with love, meaning, and purpose. - ADAM HOLZ

너 지금 배고프니?

토마스는 자신이 무슨 일을 해야 할지 알았습니다. 인도의 가난한 가정에서 태어나 미국 가정에 입양되었던 그가 모국을 방문했을 때 고향 어린이들의 절박한 어려움을 목격하고 나서였습니다. 그래서 그들을 도와야 한다고 생각하고는, 미국에 돌아가 학업을 마치고 돈을 모아서 훗날 다시 올 계획을 세우기 시작한 것입니다.

“만일 사람이 믿음이 있노라 하고 행함이 없으면 무슨 유익이 있으리요” 라고 묻고 있는 야고보서 2:14-18 말씀을 읽을 때, 토마스는 자기 나라의 한 어린 여자아이가 “엄마, 나 지금 배고파!” 하고 외치는 소리를 들었습니다. 자신이 어렸을 때 너무 배가 고파 쓰레기통을 뒤져 먹을 것을 찾던 일이 기억났습니다. 토마스는 배고픈 아이들을 돕기 위해 몇 년을 더 기다릴 수 없어서 “지금 당장 시작해야겠다!”고 결심했습니다.

토마스가 시작한 보육원에는 지금 50명의 어린이들이 양질의 급식과 보살핌 아래 예수님에 대해 배우고 또 일반 교육도 받고 있습니다. 이 모든 것은 하나님께서 하라고 하신 일이 무엇인지 알았던 한 사람이 그 일을 미루지 않았기 때문에 이루어진 것입니다.

야고보의 메시지는 우리에게도 적용이 됩니다. 예수 그리스도를 믿을 때 우리는 많은 유익을 얻을 수 있습니다. 주님과 교제할 수 있고 풍성한 삶과 희망 찬 미래를 누리게 됩니다. 그렇지만 도움이 절실한 사람들에게 실제로 다가가 도와주지 않는다면 그 믿음이 무슨 소용이 있을까요? “나 지금 배고파”라는 외침이 들리지 않습니까?

Are You Hungry Now?

Thomas knew what he needed to do. Having been born to a poor family in India and adopted by Americans, upon a return trip to India he witnessed the dire needs of the children in his hometown. So he knew he had to help. He began making plans to return to the US, finish his education, save a lot of money, and come back in the future.

Then, after reading James 2:14–18 in which the apostle asks, “What good is it . . . if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?” Thomas heard a little girl in his native country cry out to her mother: “But Mommy, I’m hungry now!” He was reminded of the times he had been intensely hungry as a child—searching through trash cans for food. Thomas knew he couldn’t wait years to help. He decided, “I’ll start now!”

Today the orphanage he began houses fifty well-fed and cared for children who are learning about Jesus and getting an education—all because one man didn’t put off what he knew God was asking him to do.

James’s message applies to us as well. Our faith in Jesus Christ provides us with great advantages—a relationship with Him, an abundant life, and a future hope. But what good is it doing anyone else if we don’t reach out and help those in need? Can you hear the cry: “I’m hungry now?” - DAVE BRANON

새 렌즈를 통하여

아버지는 “나무를 볼 때 단지 뭉뚱그려진 녹색이 아니라 이파리 하나하나를 보게 되면 정말 놀라울 거야!”라고 말했습니다. 딱 맞는 말이었습니다. 당시 열여덟 살이었던 나는 새로 안경을 써야 한다는 사실이 별로 달갑지 않았지만 안경을 쓰면서 내가 보는 모든 것이 달리 보였습니다. 흐릿하게 보이던 것들이 아름답게 보인 것입니다!

성경을 읽을 때 어떤 부분들은 안경 없이 나무를 보는 것처럼 흐릿해 보입니다. 그래서 볼 것이 그리 많지 않아 보입니다. 그러나 자세한 것을 알게 되면 지루해 보였던 구절이 아름답게 드러나 보이기도 합니다.

내가 출애굽기를 읽을 때 그랬습니다. 이스라엘 백성 가운데 하나님이 거하실 임시처소인 성막을 짓기 위해 하나님이 내리신 지시들은 지루할 만큼 자세하여 흐릿하게 보일 수 있습니다. 그런데 하나님께서 등잔대 만드는 방법을 알려주시는 25장 끝 부분에서 나는 잠시 멈추었습니다. 등잔대의 밑받침과 줄기, 등잔, 꽃받침, 그리고 꽃은 “순금으로” 만들어야 했고(31절), 등잔은 “살구꽃 형상”이어야 했습니다(34절).

살구나무는 매우 아름답습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그 자연의 아름다움을 성막에 포함시키신 것입니다!

바울은 “하나님의 보이지 아니하는 것들 곧 그의 영원하신 능력과 신성이” 창조물을 통해 보이고 알려지게 된다고 기록했습니다 (로마서 1:20). 하나님의 아름다움을 보려면 때로는 새 렌즈를 끼고 하나님의 창조물과 성경의 재미없어 보이는 구절들을 보아야 합니다.

Through a New Lens

“It must be amazing to look at a tree and see the individual leaves instead of just a blur of green!” my dad said. I couldn’t have said it better. I was eighteen at the time and not a fan of my new need to wear glasses, but they changed the way I saw everything, making the blurry beautiful!

When reading Scripture, I view certain books like I do when I look at trees without my glasses. There doesn’t seem to be much to see. But noticing details can reveal the beauty in what might seem to be a boring passage.

This happened to me when I was reading Exodus. God’s directions for building the tabernacle—His temporary dwelling place among the Israelites —can seem like a blur of boring details. But I paused at the end of chapter 25 where God gave directions for the lampstand. It was to be hammered out “of pure gold,” including its base and shaft and its flowerlike cups, buds, and blossoms (V 31). The cups were to be “shaped like almond flowers” (V 34).

Almond trees are breathtaking. And God incorporated that same natural beauty into His tabernacle!

Paul wrote, “God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature” are seen and understood in creation (ROMANS 1:20). To see God’s beauty, sometimes we have to look at creation, and what might seem like uninteresting passages in the Bible, through a new lens. - JULIE SCHWAB
