살라. 기도하라. 사랑하라.

육상선수였던 제시 오웬스는 믿음이 독실했던 부모님의 영향을 받아 용기 있는 신앙인의 삶을 살았습니다. 1936 년 베를린 올림픽에서 미국 팀의 몇 안 되는 흑인 선수 중 하나였던 오웬스는 증오에 찬 나치당원들과 그들의 지도자 히틀러 앞에서 네 개의 금메달을 받았습니다. 그는 또한 독일인 육상 선수 루츠 롱과 친구가 되었습니다. 나치의 정치선전장 한 가운데서도 믿음에 따라 살았던 오웬스의 단순한 행동이 루츠의 인생에 큰 영향을 주었습니다. 훗날 롱은 오웬스에게 보낸 편지에 이렇게 썼습니다. “베를린에서 내가 처음으로 자네에게 말을 걸었을 때 자네는 땅바닥에 무릎을 꿇고 있었지. 그때 나는 자네가 기도 중이라는 것을 알았네...... 나도 하나님을 믿을 수 있을 것 같아.”

오웬스는 바울 사도가 “악을 미워하고” “서로 우애...… 하기를......먼저하라”(로마서 12:9-10)고 한 말씀에 믿는 자들이 어떻게 답해야 하는지 본을 보여주었습니다. 자신 주변의 악에 증오로 대응할 수도 있었던 오웬스는 믿음으로 살면서, 나중에 친구가 되고 마침내 하나님을 믿을 것을 고려하게 된 사람을 사랑으로 대하기로 했던 것입니다.

하나님의 사람들이 “기도에 항상 힘쓰기”(12절)에 전념할 때 하나님은 우리에게 “서로 마음을 같이 하며 [살아갈]”(16절) 능력을 주십니다.

우리가 기도에 의지하면 믿음대로 생활하고 하나님의 형상대로 만들어진 모든 사람들을 사랑하는 일에 전념할 수 있습니다. 하나님께 부르짖을 때 그분은 우리가 장벽을 허물고 이웃과 함께 평화의 다리를 놓는 일을 도와주실 것입니다.

Live. Pray. Love.

Influenced by parents who were strong believers in Jesus, track star Jesse Owens lived as a courageous man of faith. During the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Owens, one of the few African Americans on the US team, received four gold medals in the presence of hate-filled Nazis and their leader, Hitler. He also befriended fellow athlete Luz Long, a German. Surrounded by Nazi propaganda, Owens’s simple act of living out his faith impacted Luz’s life. Later, Long wrote to Owens: “That hour in Berlin when I first spoke to you, when you had your knee upon the ground, I knew you were in prayer . . . . I think I might believe in God.”

Owens demonstrated how believers can answer the apostle Paul’s charge to “hate what is evil” and be “devoted to one another in love” (ROMANS 12:9–10). Though he could have responded to the evil around him with hate, Owens chose to live by faith and show love to a man who would later become his friend and eventually consider belief in God.

As God’s people commit to being “faithful in prayer” (V 12), He empowers us to “live in harmony with one another” (V 16).

When we depend on prayer, we can commit to living out our faith and loving all who are made in God’s image. As we cry out to God, He’ll help us break down barriers and build bridges of peace with our neighbors. - XOCHITL DIXON

노래할 이유

소위 규칙을 잘 지키며 산다는 나에게 큰 실수라 할 일이 있었습니다. 무슨 일이냐고요? 그만 깜빡 잠이 들어버린 것입니다. 우리 아이들에게는 저녁에 외출할 때 지켜야 할 통행금지시간이 있습니다. 착한 아이들이지만 나는 늘 아이들이 현관문 손잡이를 돌리는 소리를 듣기 전까지는 자지 않고 기다립니다. 아이들이 무사히 집에 돌아온 것을 알고 싶은 것이지요. 그렇게까지 안 해도 되지만 난 그렇게 합니다. 그런데 어느 날 밤 딸이 방긋이 웃으며 말하는 소리에 잠이 깼습니다. “아빠, 저 무사히 잘 왔어요. 이제 방에 가서 주무세요.” 아버지들은 최선을 다 한다 해도 때로는 지키던 자리에서 잠들어버립니다. 이것은 우리가 아주 겸손할 수밖에 없는, 하나의 지극히 인간적인 모습입니다.

그러나 하나님에게는 결코 그런 일이 없습니다. 시편 121편은 자기 자녀들의 후견인이자 보호자이신 하나님으로 인해 안심하게 하는 노래입니다. 시편 기자는 우리를 지키시는 하나님은 “졸지 아니하신다”(3절)고 선언합니다. 그는 강조를 위해 그 사실을 4절에서도 반복합니다. 하나님은 “졸지도 아니하시고 주무시지도 아니하시리로다.”

하나님은 그분이 지키시는 곳에서 결코 잠들지 않으신다는 것이 상상이나 됩니까? 하나님은 우리 아들과 딸, 숙모와 삼촌, 어머니와 아버지까지, 모두를 언제나 지켜주십니다. 하나님은 하는 수 없이 하시는 것이 아니라 그의 크신 사랑 때문에 스스로 하시는 것입니다. 그 약속은 분명히 노래로 기릴만한 것입니다.

A Reason to Sing

For a man who lives by a code, so to speak, it felt like a major failure. What’d I do? Well, I fell asleep. Our kids have a curfew to meet when they’re out for the evening. They’re good kids, but my practice is to wait up until I hear their hands turn the front doorknob. I want to know they’re home safe. I don’t have to do this: I choose to. But one night I awoke to my daughter saying through a smile, “Dad, I’m safe. You should go to bed.” Despite our best intentions, sometimes fathers fall asleep at their posts. It was very humbling, and also very human.

But that never happens with God. Psalm 121 is a reassuring song about Him as guardian and protector of His children. The psalmist declares that God who watches over us “will not slumber” (V 3). And for emphasis, he repeats that truth in verse 4: He “will neither slumber nor sleep.”

Can you even imagine? God never falls asleep at His post. He is always keeping watch over us—the sons and daughters and aunts and uncles and mothers, and even fathers. It’s not so much that He has to do this, but rather that, out of His great love, He chooses to. That promise is definitely something to sing about. - JOHN BLASE

또 한 번의 기회

우리 집 가까이에 있는 중고자전거 가게에서는 버려진 자전거를 자원봉사자들이 다시 조립하여 가난한 아이들에게 나누어줍니다. 이 가게를 시작한 어니 클라크는 노숙자들과 장애인들, 그리고 일반 사회생활에 적응하려고 애쓰는 퇴역 군인들을 포함하여 여러 궁핍한 어른들에게도 자전거를 기증합니다. 이렇게 함으로써 자전거를 고쳐 다시 쓸 수 있을 뿐 아니라 때로는 받는 사람들도 새로운 출발을 하게 해줍니다. 어떤 퇴역 군인은 새로 받은 자전거를 타고 취업 면접을 보러 가기도 했습니다.

또 한 번의 기회는 사람의 인생을 바꾸기도 하는데 특히 그것이 하나님 으로부터 온 것이라면 더욱 그렇습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 비굴하게 뇌물과 사기와 그 밖의 나쁜 죄들을 범하던 시기에 미가 선지자는 하나님의 그런 은혜를 높이 찬양했습니다. 미가의 한탄처럼 당시 “경건한 자가 세상에서 끊어졌고 정직한 자가 사람들 가운데 없었습니다”(미가 7:2).

미가는 하나님이 마땅히 악을 벌하시는 분임을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문에 회개한 자들에게 한 번 더 기회를 주실 것입니다. 그 사랑에 겸허해진 미가는 이렇게 묻습니다. “주와 같은 신이 어디 있습니까? 주는 [주의 백성의 죄를 못 본 체하시고] 살아남은 주의 백성의 죄를 용서하십니다”(18절, 현대인의 성경).

우리도 용서를 구하면 하나님은 우리의 죄 때문에 우리를 버리지 않으시기 때문에 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 미가는 하나님에 대해 이렇게 선언합니다. “다시 우리를 불쌍히 여기셔서 우리의 죄악을 발로 밟으시고 우리의 모든 죄를 깊은 바다에 던지시리이다”(19절). 하나님의 사랑은 그분을 찾는 모든 사람들에게 또 한 번의 기회를 줍니다.

Another Chance

At the Second Chance Bike Shop near our neighborhood, volunteers rebuild castoff bicycles and donate them to needy kids. Shop founder Ernie Clark also donates bikes to needy adults, including the homeless, the disabled, and military veterans struggling to make it in civilian life. Not only do the bicycles get a second chance, but sometimes the recipients get a new start too. One veteran used his new bike to get to a job interview.

Second chances can transform a person’s life, especially when the second chance comes from God. The prophet Micah extoled such grace during a time the nation of Israel groveled in bribery, fraud, and other despicable sins. As Micah lamented, “The godly people have all disappeared; not one honest person is left on the earth” (MICAH 7:2 NLT ).

God would rightly punish evil, Micah knew. But being loving, He would give those who repented another chance. Humbled by such love, Micah asked, “Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people?” (V 18 NLT ).

We too can rejoice that God doesn’t abandon us because of our sins if we ask for forgiveness. As Micah declared of God, “Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!” (V 19 NLT) . God’s love gives second chances to all who seek Him. - PATRICIA RAYBON

하나님의 지혜에 놀람

“제가 나이가 들어갈수록 ‘아버지’가 더 지혜로워지는 것 같아요. 가끔 제 아들에게 얘기할 때면 ‘제’ 입에서 ‘아버지’의 말씀이 들리기까지 해요!”

딸의 솔직한 말에 나는 웃었습니다. 나도 ‘우리’ 부모님에 대해 똑같이 느꼈고, 내가 아이들을 키울 때도 ‘부모님’이 하셨던 말씀을 자주 사용했습니다. 그런데 내가 아빠가 되자 부모님의 지혜에 대한 시각이 바뀌었습니다. 한 때 어리석은 것으로 “단정했던” 것이 그때 생각보다 훨씬 더 지혜로운 것으로 드러났습니다. 처음에는 그 말의 뜻을 제대로 알지 못했던 것입니다.

성경은 하나님의 어리석음이 사람의 가장 영리한 지혜보다 더 지혜롭다고 가르칩니다(고린도전서 1:25). “하나님의 지혜에 있어서는 이 세상이 자기 지혜로 하나님을 알지 못하므로” 믿는 자들을 구원하시기 위해 구주께서 고난 받으신 것을 전하는 “미련한 것을......기뻐하셨습니다”(21절).

하나님은 언제나 여러 가지 방법으로 우리를 놀라게 하십니다. 하나님의 아들 예수님은 세상이 기대했던 승리의 왕이 아닌 고통 받는 종으로 오셔서 최고의 영광의 모습으로 부활하시기 전 십자가에서 미천한 죽음을 당하셨습니다.

하나님의 지혜 안에서는 겸손이 자부심보다 더 높고, 사랑은 자격 없는 자에게 베푸는 자비와 친절로 그 진정한 가치를 보여줍니다. 아무도 대적할 자 없는 우리의 메시아께서 그를 믿는
모든 사람들을 “온전히 구원하시기”(히브리서 7:25) 위해 십자가에서 최후의 희생제물이 되셨습니다.

Surprised by Wisdom

“It seems like the older I get, the wiser you become. Sometimes when I talk to my son I even hear your words coming out of my mouth!”

My daughter’s candor made me laugh. I felt the same way about my parents and frequently found myself using their words as I raised my kids. Once I became a dad, my perspective on my parents’ wisdom changed. What I once “wrote off” as foolishness turned out to be far wiser than I had thought—I just couldn’t see it at first.

The Bible teaches that “the foolishness of God is wiser” than the cleverest human wisdom (1 CORINTHIANS 1:25). “For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness” of the message of a suffering Savior to rescue “those who believe” (V 21).

God always has ways of surprising us. Instead of the triumphant king the world would expect, the Son of God came as a suffering servant and died a humbling death by crucifixion—
before He was raised in unsurpassable glory.

In God’s wisdom, humility is valued over pride and love shows its worth in undeserved mercy and kindness. Through the cross, our unconquerable Messiah became the ultimate victim—in order to “save completely” (HEBREWS 7:25) all who place their faith in Him! - JAMES BANKS

긴장을 푸세요!

“긴장을 풀어야 해요.” 디즈니 만화영화 ‘코디와 생쥐 구조대’ 에서 다쳤으면서도 치료 받기를 꺼려하는 새 윌버를 치료하려는 의사가 분명히 말합니다. “긴장을 풀라고요? 지금 긴장 안 하고 있다고요!” 사실 점점 더 겁이 나서 분명 긴장을 풀지 ‘못하고’ 있는 윌버가 빈정대며 하는 말입니다. “여기서 긴장을 더 풀면 난 죽은 거라고요!”

이 이야기에 공감할 수 있습니까? 의사의 이상한 치료법(“표피조직 파쇄기” 로 불리는 전기톱 같은 것)을 생각하면 윌 버 가 불 안 해 하 는 것 도 당 연 해 보입니다. 그러나 이 장면이 재미있는 것은 우리가 공포에 사로잡힐 때 보통 어떻게 느끼는지를 잘 포착하고 있기 때문입니다. 우리가 당면한 것이 실제로 생명을 위협하는 상황이거나 그렇지 않거나 간에 말입니다.

공포에 질리면 긴장을 풀라고 하는 좋은 말도 통하질 않습니다. 주변에 생명의 위험이 높아가고 고통스러운 “사망의 줄”(시편 116:3) 이 내 속의 모든 것을 단단히 묶어버릴 때 나의 모든 본능은 긴장을 풀기보다는 맞서 싸우려 합니다.

그렇긴 하지만......대개의 경우, 두려운 상태에서 맞서 싸우려들면 불안감만 더 크게 조여들어와 나중에는 두려움으로 꼼짝 못하게 될 뿐입니다. 그러나 내키지는 않더라도 나 스스로 고통을 받아들이면서 그 고통을 하나님께 올려드리면(4절) 무언가 놀라운 일이 일어납니다. 내 속을 동여매고 있던 매듭이 조금씩 풀어지면서 (7절) 알 수 없는 평안이 내 안으로 몰려옵니다.

그리고 성령께서 위로로 나를 감싸주실 때 나는 복음의 중심에 있는 진리를 좀 더 이해하게 됩니다. 그것은 하나님의 강한 팔에 우리를 맡길 때 가장 잘 싸울 수 있다는 것입니다(베드로전서 5:6-7).

You Have to Relax!

“You must relax,” pronounces a doctor crisply in Disney’s Rescuers Down Under, attempting to treat the injured albatross Wilbur, a reluctant patient. “Relax? I am relaxed!” a clearly not relaxed Wilbur responds sarcastically as his panic grows. “If I were any more relaxed, I’d be dead!”

Can you relate? In light of the doctor’s dubious methods (such as a chainsaw dubbed an “epidermal tissue disruptor”), Wilbur’s misgivings seem justified. But the scene is funny because it captures how we tend to feel when we’re panicking —whether or not what we’re facing is actually life-threatening.

When we’re terrified, encouragement to relax can feel ridiculous. I know when I feel life’s terrors piling up around me, and when painful “cords of death” (PSALM 116:3) tighten my stomach into knots, my every instinct is to fight back, not to relax.

And yet . . . more often than not, my panicked attempts to fight back only tighten anxiety’s vice-grip, leaving me crippled by fear. But when I, albeit reluctantly, allow myself to feel my
pain and lift it up to God (V 4), something surprising happens. The knot inside me relaxes a bit (V 7), and a peace I can’t understand rushes through me.

And as the Spirit’s comforting presence surrounds me, I understand a bit more the truth at the heart of the gospel: we fight best when we surrender into the powerful arms of God

종의 마음

요리사. 행사 기획자. 영양사. 간호사. 이들이 하는 일은 오늘날의 엄마들이 늘 수행하는 임무의 일부에 지나지 않습니다. 2016년의 한 연구에 의하면 엄마들은 한 주일에 59시간에서 96시간을 아이와 관련된 일을 하는 것으로 추산되었습니다.

엄마들이 항상 지쳐 있을 수밖에 없지요! 엄마가 된다는 것은 자녀들을 돌보는데 엄청난 시간과 에너지를 쏟아 붓는 것을 의미합니다. 아이들은 세상 살아가는 법을 배우는데 도움이 아주 많이 필요하기 때문입니다.

하루하루가 길게 느껴지고 다른 사람들을 돌보는 일이 가치 있는 일이라는 것을 되새길 필요가 있을 때 나는 섬기는 자들을 지지해주시는 예수님을 보면서 큰 소망을 가집니다.

마가복음에서 예수님의 제자들은 자기들 중 누가 가장 큰가를 두고 언쟁하고 있었습니다. 예수님은 조용히 앉으시며, “누구든지 첫째가 되고자 하면 뭇 사람의 끝이 되며 뭇 사람을 섬기는 자가 되어야 하리라”(9:35)고 제자들을 일깨우셨습니다. 그런 다음 한 아이를 팔에 안고 다른 사람들, 특히 우리 중 가장 의지할 데 없는 사람들을 섬기는 것의 중요성을 말씀하셨습니다(36-37절).

그리스도의 반응은 하나님 나라에서 위대한 것이 어떤 것인지 그 기준을 다시 세워줍니다. 예수님의 기준은 다른 사람들을 기꺼이 돌보려는 마음입니다. 그리고 예수님은 섬기기로 결심한 사람들에게 능력의 하나님께서 함께 하실 거라고 약속하셨습니다(37절).

가정이나 지역사회를 섬길 기회가 생길 때, 예수님은 다른 이들을 섬기는데 들이는 시간과 노력을 매우 귀하게 여기신다는 것을 알고 힘을 내시기 바랍니다.

Servant’s Heart

Cook. Event Planner. Nutritionist. Nurse. These are just some of the responsibilities regularly performed by modern moms. In 2016, research estimated that moms likely worked between fifty-nine and ninety-six hours per week doing child-related tasks.

No wonder moms are always exhausted! Being a mom means giving a lot of time and energy to care for children, who need so much help as they learn to navigate the world.

When my days feel long and I need a reminder that caring for others is a worthy pursuit, I find great hope when I see Jesus affirming those who serve.

In the gospel of Mark, the disciples were having an argument about which one of them was the greatest. Jesus quietly sat down and reminded them that “anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” (9:35). Then He took a child in His arms to illustrate the importance of serving others, especially the most helpless among us (VV 36–37).

Christ’s response resets the bar for what greatness looks like in His kingdom. His standard is a heart willing to care for others. And Jesus has promised that God’s empowering presence will be with those who choose to serve (V 37).

As you have opportunities to serve in your family or community, be encouraged that Jesus greatly values the time and effort you give in service to others. - LISA SAMRA

문제 해결방법 그 이상으로

얼마 전에 손녀 하나가 자기 토끼인형을 벽난로 유리에 갖다 대고 따뜻하게 해준 일이 있었는데, 그 일로 한 가지 “해크”(까다로운 문제를 처리하는 기발한 해결방법)를 알게 되었습니다. 그때 모조 토끼털 뭉치가 유리에 남아 있어 보기에 좋지 않았었는데, 벽난로 전문가가 유리를 새 것처럼 보이게 하는 한 가지 놀라운 해결방법을 알려주었던 것입니다. 그 방법이 효과가 있어서 이제 우리는 더 이상 봉제 동물인형들을 벽난로 근처에 두게 하지 않습니다!

내가 기발한 해결법을 거론하는 것은 때때로 우리가 성경말씀을 그런 해결방법을 모아놓은 책으로, 곧 보다 쉬운 삶을 살게 하는 비결을 모아놓은 것으로 볼 수 있기 때문입니다. 성경이 그리스도를 영화롭게 하는 새로운 삶을 사는 방법에 대해 많이 이야기하고 있는 것은 사실이지만, 그것이 성경의 유일한 목적은 아닙니다. 성경이 우리에게 제시해주는 것은 인간의 가장 큰 욕구에 대한 해결책입니다. 그것은 죄로부터, 그리고 하나님으로부터 영원히 분리되어 있는 상태에서 구원받는 것입니다.

창세기 3장 15절의 구원의 약속에서부터 새 하늘과 새 땅의 참된 소망에 이르기까지(요한계시록 21:1-2) 계속해서 성경은 하나님께서 우리를 죄에서 구원하고 우리가 그분과 교제를 누릴 수 있도록 영원한 계획을 갖고 계시다는 것을 보여주고 있습니다. 성경은 어떻게 살 것인가를 이야기하고 제안할 때마다 언제나 우리에게 우리의 가장 큰 문제라도 해결하실 수 있는 유일한 분, 예수님을 가리켜 보여줍니다.

하나님의 책인 성경을 펼칠 때 예수님과 그분이 베풀어주시는 구원, 그리고 그분의 자녀로서 어떻게 살 것인가 하는 것들을 추구하는 것을 잊지 않기를 바랍니다. 주님은 이 모든 것의 최고의 해결책을 마련해주셨습니다!

More Than Hacks

I recently found a “hack” (a clever solution to a tricky problem) when one of my grandchildren warmed her toy rabbit on our fireplace glass. The resulting globs of fake bunny fur weren’t pretty, but a fireplace expert provided a great hack—a tip for how to make the glass look like new. It worked, and now we no longer allow stuffed animals near the fireplace!

I bring up hacks because sometimes we can view Scripture as a collection of hacks—tips to make life easier. While it’s true that the Bible has much to say about how to live a Christ-honoring new life, that’s not the only purpose of the Book. What Scripture provides for us is a solution for mankind’s greatest need: rescue from sin and eternal separation from God.

From the promise of salvation in Genesis 3:15 all the way to the true hope of a new heaven and new earth (REVELATION 21:1–2), the Bible explains that God has an eternal plan for rescuing us from our sin and allowing us to enjoy fellowship with Him. In every story and every suggestion for how to live, the Bible is pointing us to Jesus—the only One who can solve our biggest problem.

When we open God’s Book, may we remember that we’re looking for Jesus, the rescue He offers, and how to live as His children. He’s provided the greatest solution of all! - DAVE BRANON

변화된 인생

Life Changes

Stephen grew up in a rough part of East London and fell into crime by the age of ten. He said, “If everyone’s selling drugs and doing robberies and fraud, then you’re going to get involved. It’s just a way of life.” But when he was twenty, he had a dream that changed him: “I heard God saying, Stephen, you’re going to prison for murder.” This vivid dream served as a warning, and he turned to God and received Jesus as his Savior—and the Holy Spirit transformed his life.

Stephen set up an organization that teaches inner-city kids discipline, morality, and respect through sports. He credits God with the success he has seen as he prays with and trains the kids. “Rebuilding misguided dreams,” he says.

In pursuing God and leaving behind our past, we—like Stephen—follow Paul’s charge to the Ephesians to embrace a new way of life. Although our old self is “corrupted by its deceitful desires,” we can daily seek to “put on the new self” that’s created to be like God (EPHESIANS 4:22, 24). All believers embrace this continual process as we ask God through His Holy Spirit to make us more like Him.

은혜의 손길

레이프 엔거의 소설 ‘강 같은 평화’에 나오는 예레미야 랜드는 마을의 한 학교에서 허드렛일을 하면서 세 아이를 홀로 키우고 있는 믿음이 독실한 아버지인데, 어떤 때는 그 믿음으로 기적 같은 일을 보여주는 사람이기도 합니다. 예레미야의 믿음은 소설 전체에 걸쳐 자주 시험을 받습니다.

예레미야의 학교는 피부에 흉터가 있는 고약한 성격의 체스트 홀든이라는 교장에 의해 운영되고 있습니다. 넘친 하수를 아무 불평 없이 걸레로 닦고 교장이 박살낸 병조각들을 줍는 등, 예레미야의 철저한 직업의식에도 불구하고 홀든 교장은 그를 내보내려고 합니다. 그러던 어느 날 교장은 모든 학생들이 보는 앞에서 예레미야를 술주정뱅이라고 비난하면서 그를 해고 시켜 버립니다. 굴욕적인 광경이 아닐 수 없습니다.

예레미야는 이 상황을 어떻게 받아 들일까요? 부당한 해고에 법적으로 대응하겠다고 위협하거나 교장에게 비난을 퍼부을 수도 있었습니다. 아니면 부당한 처사를 그대로 받아들이고 어디론가 조용히 가버릴 수도 있었습니다. 당신이라면 어떻게 할 것인지 한 번 생각해보십시오.

예수님은 말씀하십니다. “너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 미워하는 자를 선대하며 너희를 저주하는 자를 위하여 축복하며 너희를 모욕하는 자를 위하여 기도하라”(누가복음 6:27-28). 이 도전의 말씀은 악한 일을 너그러이 봐주거나 정의를 추구하지 말라는 말이 아닙니다. 오히려 그 말씀은 우리더러 “내 원수가 하나님이 원하시는 사람이 되게 하는데 어떻게 도울 수 있을까?”라는 심오한 질문을 하면서 하나님을 본받을 것을 요구하는 말씀입니다(36절).

예레미야는 잠시 홀든을 바라보더니 손을 내밀어 그의 얼굴을 만집니다. 홀든은 방어적인 자세로 뒤로 물러서다가 그의 턱과 뺨이 이상하다는 것을 느낍니다. 피부의 흉터가 깨끗이 사라진 것입니다. 원수에게 은혜의 손길이 닿았습니다.

Touched by Grace

In Leif Enger’s novel Peace Like a River, Jeremiah Land is a single father of three working as a janitor at a local school. He’s also a man of deep, sometimes miraculous, faith. Throughout the book, his faith is often tested.

Jeremiah’s school is run by Chester Holden, a meanspirited superintendent with a skin condition. Despite Jeremiah’s excellent work ethic—mopping up a sewage spill without complaint, picking up broken bottles the superintendent smashed—Holden wants him gone. One day, in front of all the students, he accuses Jeremiah of drunkenness and fires him. It’s a humiliating scene.

How does Jeremiah respond? He could threaten legal action for unfair dismissal or make accusations of his own. He could slink away, accepting the injustice. Think for a moment what you might do.

“Love your enemies,” Jesus says, “do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you” (LUKE 6:27–28). These challenging words aren’t meant to excuse evil or stop justice from being pursued. Instead, they call us to imitate God (V 36) by asking a profound question: How can I help my enemy become all God wants him or her to be?

Jeremiah looks at Holden for a moment, then reaches up and touches his face. Holden steps back defensively, then feels his chin and cheeks in wonder. His scarred skin has been healed.

우리의 새 집

1892년에 앨리스 섬을 통해 들어온 첫 미국 이민자 애니 무어는 새 집을 마련하고 새로운 인생을 시작한다는 생각에 무척 마음이 설레었을 것입니다. 그 후 수백 만 명의 사람들이 그곳을 통과해 들어왔습니다. 애니는 겨우 십대의 나이에 새 삶을 시작하기 위해 아일랜드에서의 힘든 생활을 뒤로 하고 떠나왔습니다. 손에는 작은 가방 하나만을 들고 있었지만 그녀는 부푼 꿈과 희망, 그리고 커다란 기대를 가지고
기회의 땅에 온 것입니다.

하나님의 자녀인 우리가 “새 하늘과 새 땅”(요한계시록 21:1)을 보게 될 때 얼마나 더 설레고 경외하는 마음을 갖게 될까요? 우리는 요한계시록에서 말하는 “거룩한 성 새 예루살렘”(2절)에 들어가게 될 것입니다. 요한 사도는 이 놀라운 곳을 강렬한 이미지로 묘사합니다. 그곳에는 “하나님과 어린 양의 보좌로부터 흘러나오는 수정 같이 맑은 생명수의 강”(22:1)이 있을 것입니다. 여기서 물은 생명과 풍요를 나타내는데, 물의 근원은 영원하신 하나님 그분입니다. 요한은 “다시 저주가 없을 것”(3절) 이라고 말합니다. 하나님께서 원래 계획하신 하나님 자신과 인간 사이의 아름답고 순수한 관계가 완전히 회복될 것입니다.

자신의 자녀들을 사랑하셔서 자기 아들 예수님을 희생하며 우리를 사신 하나님이 놀라운 새 집, 곧 그분 자신이 우리와 함께 거하시며 우리의 하나님이 되어주실 집을 준비하고 계신다는 사실이 정말 믿어지지 않습니다(21:3).

Our New Home

As the first immigrant to the US to pass through Ellis Island in 1892, Annie Moore must have felt incredible excitement at the thought of a new home and a fresh start. Millions would pass through there afterward. Just a teenager, Annie had left behind a difficult life in Ireland to start a new one. Carrying only a little bag in her hand, she came with lots of dreams, hopes, and expectations of a land of opportunity.

How much more excitement and awe will God’s children experience when we see “a new heaven and a new earth” (REVELATION 21:1). We will enter what the book of Revelation calls “the Holy City, the new Jerusalem” (V 2). The apostle John describes this amazing place with powerful imagery. There will be “the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb” (22:1). Water represents life and abundance, and its source will be the eternal God Himself. John says that “no longer will there be any curse” (V 3). The beautiful, pure relationship God intended between Himself and humans will be fully restored.

How incredible to know that God, who loves His children and purchased us with the life of His Son, is preparing such an amazing new home—where He Himself will live with us and be our God (21:3). - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR
