잠 못 이루는 밤

나는 대학 시절 여름철을 콜로라도 주의 기막히게 아름다운 산 속에 있는 방문객을 위한 목장에서 일하며 보냈습니다. 그곳에서 일하는 사람들에게는 순번제로 “야간 경계” 임무가 주어졌는데, 방문객들이 밤에 잘 때 산불이 일어나지 않나 지켜보며 그들을 보호하기 위해서였습니다. 처음에는 고되고 달갑지 않았던 일이 나에게는 고요한 가운데 생각에 잠겨 하나님의 장엄한 임재 속에서 위안을 얻는 특별한 기회가 되었습니다.

다윗 왕도 하나님의 임재를 간절한 마음으로 열심히 구했습니다(시편 63:1). 잠자리에서도 그랬고 “밤새도록” 그렇게 하기도 했습니다(6절). 이 시편에서 우리는 다윗이 곤경에 처해 있음을 분명히 알 수 있습니다. 이 시편의 내용은 다윗이 그의 아들 압살롬의 반역으로 깊이 슬퍼하는 것을 보여주는 것일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 그 밤에 다윗은 “[하나님의] 날개 그늘”(7절), 곧 하나님의 능력과 임재 속에서 도움을 얻고 다시 회복되었습니다.

우리도 살아가면서 어떤 위기나 어려움들을 당하기도 하고, 밤을 지새우는 것이 결코 위안이 되지 않았을 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 우리 자신의 “압살롬”이 우리의 마음과 영혼을 무겁게 짓누르거나, 가족이나 직장, 금전 문제들이 우리를 편히 쉬지 못하게 괴롭힐 수도 있습니다. 만일 그렇다면 그 잠 못 이루는 순간들을 하나님께 부르짖으며 매달리는 기회로 여겨 그분의 사랑의 손길이 우리를 꼭 붙잡으시도록 하십시오(8절).

Night Watches

During my college days, my summers were spent working at a guest ranch in the stunningly beautiful mountains of Colorado. On a rotating basis, staff members were assigned “night watch” duty—to keep an eye out for forest fires in order to protect the guests as they slept. What initially seemed to be an exhausting and thankless task became a unique opportunity for me to be still, reflect, and find solace in the majesty of God’s presence.

King David earnestly sought and thirsted for the presence of God (PSALM 63:1), even from his bed and through the “watches of the night” (V 6). The psalm makes it clear David was troubled. It’s possible the words contained in it reflect his deep sadness over the rebellion of his son Absalom. Yet the night became a time for David to find help and restoration in the “shadow of [God’s] wings” (V 7)—in His power and presence.

Perhaps you’re dealing with some crisis or difficulty in your life, and the night watches have been anything but comforting. Perhaps your own “Absalom” weighs heavy on your heart and soul. Or other burdens of family, work, or finances plague your times of rest. If so, consider these sleepless moments to be opportunities to call out and cling to God—allowing His loving hand to uphold you (V 8). - EVAN MORGAN, GUEST AUTHOR

하나님 형상으로

한 젊은 여인이 자신의 아름다운 갈색 피부가 퇴색하기 시작하자 마치 자신의 “자아”가 사라지거나 잃어버리기라도 하는 것처럼 두려운 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 그녀는 스스로 “나의 반점들”이라고 하였던, 백반증세로 생긴 더 연해진 색의 피부 반점들을 진한 화장으로 가렸습니다. 백반은 피부에 색조를 주는 멜라닌 피부색소가 없어져서 생기는 증상입니다.

그러던 어느 날 그녀는 ‘왜 숨겨야 하지?’ 하고 자문하게 되었습니다. 그래서 자신을 있는 그대로 받아들이시는 하나님의 능력을 의지하며 화장을 진하게 하는 것을 중단했습니다. 곧 그녀는 자신의 이러한 자신감으로 사람들의 관심을 받기 시작했고, 마침내 세계적인 화장품 회사의 백반증세를 지닌 최초의 광고모델이 되었습니다.

“이건 정말 너무나 큰 축복이에요.”라고 한 텔레비전 뉴스 진행자에게 말하면서, 그녀는 자기의 믿음과 가족과 친구들 때문에 용기를 얻게 되었다고 말했습니다.

우리는 이 여인의 이야기에서 우리 한 사람 한 사람이 하나님의 형상대로 창조되었다는 것을 다시 생각하게 됩니다. “하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고”(창세기 1:27). 우리가 겉으로 어떻게 보이든 우리 모두는 하나님의 형상을 가진 자들입니다. 우리는 하나님이 창조하신 사람들로서 그분의 영광을 드러내고, 또 예수님을 믿는 자들로서 세상 속에서 그분을 대신 드러내도록 계속 변화 받고 있습니다.

In God’s Image

When her beautiful brown skin started losing its color, a young woman felt frightened, as if she were disappearing or losing her “self.” With heavy makeup, she covered up “my spots,” as she called them—patches of lighter skin caused by a condition called vitiligo. It’s a loss of skin pigment, melanin, which gives skin its tone.

Then one day, she asked herself: Why hide? Relying on God’s strength to accept herself, she stopped wearing heavy makeup. Soon she began gaining attention for her selfconfidence. Eventually she became the first spokesmodel with vitiligo for a global cosmetics brand.

“It’s such a blessing,” she told a TV news host, adding that her faith, family, and friends are the ways she finds encouragement.

This woman’s story invites us to remember that we each are created in God’s image. “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (GENESIS 1:27). No matter what we look like on the outside, all of us are image-bearers of God. As His created persons, we reflect His glory; and as believers in Jesus we are being transformed to represent Him in the world.

거울 속의 사물들

“가야만 해. 더 빨리.”1993년도 영화 ‘쥬라기 공원’의 대표적인 장면에서 제프 골드블럼이 배역을 맡은 이안 말콤 박사가 사납게 날뛰는 공룡 티라노사우루스를 피해 다른 두 사람과 함께 지프차를 타고 도망가면서 하는 말입니다. 운전자가 백미러를 보니 거기에 맹렬히 따라오는 파충류의 턱이 보였습니다. 그 턱 바로 밑 거울 면에는 “거울에 보이는 물체는 실제로는 더 가까울 수 있습니다.”라는 글귀가 쓰여 있었습니다.

이 장면에는 박진감에다 두려움을 더해주는 유머가 잘 배합되어 있습니다. 그런데 우리도 때때로 과거로부터의 이런 “괴물들”이 끊임없이 우리 뒤를 쫒아오는 것처럼 느낄 때가 있습니다. 우리가 우리 삶의 “거울”을 볼 때, 우리가 잘못했던 것들이 그 속에 불쑥 나타나서 우리는 죄책감과 수치심에 사로잡히기 쉽습니다.

바울 사도는 과거가 우리를 무력하게 만드는 위력을 지닐 수 있다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그는 여러 해 동안 그리스도와 전혀 상관없는 삶을 살면서 그리스도인들을 박해하기까지 했습니다 (빌립보서 3:1-9). 바울이 자신의 과거를 후회하는데서 그쳤다면 그는 분명 아무것도 할 수 없었을 것입니다.

그러나 바울은 그리스도와의 관계 속에서 발견한 아름다움과 능력으로 말미암아 자신의 옛 삶을 떨쳐버리지 않을 수 없었습니다 (8-9절). 그렇게 하여 자유롭게 된 그는 두려움과 후회에 사로잡혀 뒤돌아보지 않고 믿음으로 앞을 바라볼 수 있었습니다. “오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여......달려가노라”(13-14절).

그리스도 안에서 우리가 얻은 구원은 그분을 위해 살 수 있도록 우리를 자유롭게 해주었습니다. 우리가 계속 앞으로 나아갈 때, 이제 더 이상 “(우리) 거울 속에 비치는 것들”이 우리의 나아갈 방향을 결정하지 않도록 해야 합니다.

Objects in Mirror

“Must. Go. Faster.” That’s what Dr. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, says in an iconic scene from the 1993 movie Jurassic Park as he and two other characters flee in a Jeep from a rampaging tyrannosaurus. When the driver looks in the rearview mirror, he sees the raging reptile’s jaw—right above the words: “OBJECTS IN MIRROR MAY BE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR.”

The scene is a masterful combination of intensity and grim humor. But sometimes the “monsters” from our past feel like they’ll never stop pursuing us. We look in the “mirror” of our lives and see mistakes looming right there, threatening to consume us with guilt or shame.

The apostle Paul understood the past’s potentially paralyzing power. He’d spent years trying to live perfectly apart from Christ, and even persecuted Christ ians (PHILIPPIANS 3:1–9). Regret over his past could easily have crippled him.

But Paul found such beauty and power in his relationship with Christ that he was compelled to let go of his old life (VV 8–9). That freed him to look forward in faith instead of backward in fear or regret: “One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal” (VV 13–14).

Our redemption in Christ has freed us to live for Him. We don’t have to let those “objects in (our) mirror” dictate our direction as we continue forward. - ADAM HOLZ

당신을 위해 있습니다

세계의 다른 도시들처럼 파리 근교에도 사람들이 그 지역의 노숙자들을 도우러 오고 있습니다. 방수 부대 속에 옷가지들을 넣고 지정된 울타리에 걸어놓으면 노숙자들이 자기들 필요에 따라 가져갑니다. 그 부대에는 다음과 같은 꼬리표가 붙어 있습니다. “저는 길을 잃지 않았습니다. 저는 추울 때를 대비해 당신을 위해 있습니다.” 이러한 노력은 주거지가 없는 사람들을 따뜻하게 해줄 뿐만 아니라, 그 지역 사람들에게도 주변의 가난한 사람들을 돕는 일의 중요성을 가르쳐주고 있습니다.

성경은 가난한 사람들을 돌보는 것의 중요성을 강조하면서 그런 사람들에게 “아끼지 말라”고 지시하고 있습니다(신명기 15:11). 우리는 자칫하면 가난한 사람들의 어려움에 눈 감아버리고는 우리가 가진 것을 나누지 않고 단단히 붙잡고 싶어 합니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 우리 주위에 언제나 도움이 필요한 사람들이 있다는 것을 알고, 그렇기 때문에 “아끼는 마음”이 아니라 관대한 마음으로 그들을 대하라고 권유하십니다 (10절). 예수님도 우리가 가난한 사람들에게 주면 천국에서 없어지지 않는 보물을 받을 것이라고 말씀하십니다(누가복음 12:33).

하나님 외에 그 누구도 우리의 관대함을 알아주지 않을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 아낌없이 베풀 때, 우리 주위의 어려운 사람들의 필요를 채워줄 뿐 아니라 다른 이들에게 베푸는 우리를 위해 하나님께서 작정해 놓으신 기쁨 또한 누릴 수 있습니다. 주님, 우리가 눈을 뜨고 손을 펴서 주님께서 우리 삶 속에 데려다 주신 사람들의 필요를 베풀 수 있게 도와주소서!

Here for You

On the outskirts of Paris, as in other cities around the globe, people are coming to the aid of the homeless in their communities. Clothing, covered in waterproof bags, is hung on designated fences for those living on the streets to take according to their needs. The bags are labeled, “I’m not lost; I’m for you if you’re cold.” The effort not only warms those without shelter, but also teaches those in the community the importance of assisting the needy among them.

The Bible highlights the importance of caring for those who are poor, instructing us to be “openhanded” toward them (DEUTERONOMY 15:11). We might be tempted to avert our eyes to the plight of the poor, holding tightly to our resources instead of sharing them. Yet God challenges us to recognize that we will always be surrounded by those who have needs and therefore to respond to them with generosity, not a “grudging heart” (V 10). Jesus says that in giving to the poor we receive an enduring treasure in heaven (LUKE 12:33).

Our generosity may not be recognized by anyone other than God. Yet when we give freely, we not only meet the needs of those around us but we also experience the joy God intends for us in providing for others. Help us, Lord, to have open eyes and open hands to supply the needs of those You place in our paths!

두려움 없는 사랑

여러 해 동안 나는 내 마음을 보호하려고 두려움이라는 방패를 지니고 살았습니다. 그것은 내가 새로운 것을 시도하거나, 꿈을 추구하거나, 하나님께 순종하는 것 등을 회피하는 구실이 되었습니다. 반면에 상실이나 심적 고통, 거절에 대한 두려움 때문에 하나님이나 다른 사람들과 사랑의 관계를 키워갈 수 없었습니다. 두려움 때문에 나는 불안해지고 걱정이 많아졌으며 질투심이 많은 아내가 되었고, 과잉보호하고 걱정하는 엄마가 되어버렸습니다. 그러나 하나님이 나를 얼마나 사랑하시는 지를 계속 터득해 가면서, 하나님은 내가 하나님이나 다른 사람들과 관계 맺는 방식을 바꾸어주고 계십니다. 나는 하나님이 나를 돌보아주시리라는 것을 알기 때문에 더욱 안정감을 느끼고, 내가 필요로 하는 것보다 다른 사람들의 필요를 적극적으로 먼저 생각하게 됩니다.

하 나 님 은 사 랑 이 십 니 다 ( 요 한 1 서 4:7-8). 사랑의 궁극적인 표현인 십자가에서의 그리스도의 죽음은 우리를 향한 주님의 열정이 얼마나 깊은 것인가를 보여줍니다(9-10절). 하나님이 우리를 사랑하시고 우리 안에 거하시기 때문에, 우리도 하나님이 누구이시며 어떤 일을 하셨는지를 바탕으로 하여 다른 사람들을 사랑할 수 있습니다(11-12절).

예수님을 우리의 구주로 영접하면 주님은 우리에게 성령을 부여해주십니다(13-15절). 우리가 성령의 도움으로 하나님의 사랑을 알고 의지할 때 우리는 점점 더 예수님을 닮아가게 됩니다(16-17절). 우리가 신뢰와 믿음 안에서 성장해갈 때 점점 두려움이 사라지는데, 이는 단지 우리가 하나님이 우리를 깊게 그리고 온전히 사랑하고 계시다는 것을 아무 의심 없이 알기 때문입니다(18-19절).

우리를 위한 하나님의 인격적이고 조건 없는 사랑을 경험하면, 우리는 성장하면서 두려움 없는 사랑으로 과감히 하나님과 다른 사람들과 관계를 맺을 수 있습니다.

Fearless Love

For years I wore a shield of fear to protect my heart. It became an excuse to avoid trying new things, following my dreams, and obeying God. But fear of loss, heartache, and rejection hindered me from developing loving relationships with God and others. Fear made me an insecure, anxious, and jealous wife, and an over protective, worrying mother. As I continue learning how much God loves me, however, He’s changing the way I relate to Him and to others. Because I know God will care for me, I feel more secure and willing to place the needs of others before mine.

God is love (1 JOHN 4:7–8). Christ’s death on the cross—the ultimate demonstration of love—displays the depth of His passion for us (VV 9–10). Because God loves us and lives in us, we can love others based on who He is and what He’s done (VV 11–12).

When we receive Jesus as our Savior, He gives us His Holy Spirit (VV 13–15). As the Spirit helps us know and rely on God’s love, He makes us more like Jesus (VV 16–17). Growing in trust and faith can gradually eliminate fear, simply because we know without a doubt that God loves us deeply and completely (VV 18–19).

As we experience God’s personal and unconditional love for us, we grow and can risk relating to Him and others with fearless love.

비어있는 침상

나는 자메이카의 몬테고 만에 있는 성 제임스 병원에 다시 가서 2년 전에 예수님의 사랑을 알게 된 렌델을 또 만나보고 싶었습니다. 매년 봄 나와 함께 찾아갔던 고등학교 합창단의 십대 소녀인 에비가 렌델과 함께 성경을 읽고 복음을 전했고, 렌델이 예수님을 개인적으로 자신의 구세주로 영접했었습니다.

나는 남자병실 안으로 들어가 렌델의 침대 쪽을 바라보았습니다. 그런데 침대가 비어 있었습니다. 간호사실에 갔는데 듣고 싶지 않는 말을 들었습니다. 렌델이 세상을 떠났다는 것이었습니다. 그것도 우리가 도착하기 불과 닷새 전에 말입니다.

눈물을 흘리며 그 슬픈 소식을 에비에게 문자로 알렸습니다. 에비의 반응은 단순했습니다. “렌델은 예수님과 함께 찬양하고 있어요.” 나중에 에비가 말했습니다. “렌델에게 예수님을 전한 것은 정말 잘한 일이었어요.”

에비의 말에서 나는 우리가 그리스도 안에서 갖고 있는 소망을 이웃에게 사랑으로 전할 수 있도록 준비하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 다시 생각하게 되었습니다. 그러나 우리와 항상 함께 계실 그분에 관한 복음의 메시지를 선포하는 것이 언제나 쉽지는 않습니다(마태복음 28:20). 하지만 복음이 우리나 렌델과 같은 사람들에게 미친 영향을 생각하면, 아마도 우리는 용기를 가지고 어디를 가든지 “제자를 삼을” 준비를 훨씬 더 잘 할 수 있을 것입니다(19절).

나는 그 텅 빈 침상을 보았을 때의 슬픔을 결코 잊을 수 없을 것입니다. 그리고 동시에 한 신실한 십대 아이가 렌델의 영원한 삶에 얼마나 중요한 영향을 주었는가를 아는데서 오는 기쁨 또한 잊지 못할 것입니다.

The Empty Bed

I was eager to return to St. James Infirmary in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and reconnect with Rendell, who two years earlier had learned about Jesus’s love for him. Evie, a teenager in the high school choir I travel with each spring, had read Scripture with Rendell and explained the gospel, and he personally received Jesus as his Savior.

When I entered the men’s section of the home and looked toward Rendell’s bed, however, I found it was empty. I went to the nurse’s station, and was told what I didn’t want to hear. He had passed away —just five days before we arrived.

Through tears, I texted Evie the sad news. Her response was simple: “Rendell is celebrating with Jesus.” Later she said, “It’s a good thing we told him about Jesus when we did.”

Her words reminded me of the importance of being ready to lovingly share with others the hope we have in Christ. No, it’s not always easy to proclaim the gospel message about the One who will be with us always (MATTHEW 28:20), but when we think about the difference it made for us and for people like Rendell, perhaps we’ll be encouraged to be even more ready to “make disciples” wherever we go (V 19).

I’ll never forget the sadness of seeing that empty bed— and also the joy of knowing what a difference one faithful teen made in Rendell’s forever life.

절대 혼자가 아니다

한 작가 친구가 인도네시아에서 목회자를 위한 성경 가이드를 쓰면서 그 나라의 공동체 문화에 점차 매료되었습니다. “상부상조”라는 뜻의 ‘고통 로용’이라는 말의 개념은 마을에서 어떤 사람의 지붕을 고치거나 교량이나 길을 재건하기 위해 마을 사람들이 함께 일하면서 실천되고 있습니다. 친구는 도시에서도 마찬가지라며 이렇게 말했습니다. “사람들은 항상 다른 사람과 함께 다니지. 예를 들어 의사에게 갈 때도 그래. 그것은 문화적 규범이야. 그렇기에 사람들은 결코 혼자가
아니지.”

전 세계적으로 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 우리 또한 결코 혼자가 아니라는 것을 알고는 기뻐합니다. 우리의 변함없고 영원한 동반자는 삼위일체의 세 번째 인격체이신 성령님입니다. 우리 하나님 아버지는 모든 그리스도의 제자들에게 “너희를 돕고 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하도록”(요한복음 14:16) 충실한 친구보다 훨씬 좋으신 성령님을 보내주셨습니다.

예수님은 지상에서 자신의 때가 끝난 후에 성령께서 오실 거라고 약속하셨습니다. 예수님은 “내가 너희를 고아와 같이 버려두지 아니하고” 라고 말씀하셨습니다(18절). 오히려 “너희와 함께 거하심이요 또 너희 속에 계실” “진리의 영”이신 성령님이 그리스도를 구세주로 영접하는 우리 각자 안에 거하고 계십니다(17절).

우리의 조력자시며 위로자시고 격려자이자 상담자이신 성령님은 서로 연결된 사람들조차 외로움으로 고통 받는 이 세상에서 우리의 변함없는 동반자이십니다. 우리 모두 성령님의 위로하시는 사랑과 도우심 안에 영원히 거할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Never Alone

While writing a Bible guide for pastors in Indonesia, a writer friend grew fascinated with that nation’s culture of togetherness. Called gotong royong —meaning “mutual assistance”—the concept is practiced in villages, where neighbors may work together to repair someone’s roof or rebuild a bridge or path. In cities too my friend said, “People always go places with someone else—to a doctor’s appointment, for example. It’s the cultural norm. So you’re never alone.”

Worldwide, believers in Jesus rejoice in knowing we also are never alone. Our constant and forever companion is the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity. Far more than a loyal friend, the Spirit of God is given to every follower of Christ by our heavenly Father to “help you and be with you forever” (JOHN 14:16).

Jesus promised God’s Spirit would come after His own time on Earth ended. “I will not leave you as orphans,” Jesus said (V 18). Instead, the Holy Spirit—“the Spirit of Truth” who “lives with you and will be in you”—indwells each of us who receives Christ as Savior (V 17).

The Holy Spirit is our Helper, Comforter, Encourager, and Counselor—a constant companion in a world where loneliness can afflict even connected people. May we forever abide in His comforting love and help.

살아있는 친절 기념물

나는 전통적인 것들이 많이 있는 교회에서 자라났습니다. 사랑하는 가족이나 친구가 죽었을 때 한 가지 전통이 행해지는데, 오래지 않아 “......를 추모하며”라고 새긴 동판이 교회의 의자나 복도의 그림에 붙여집니다. 거기에는 죽은 사람의 이름이 새겨져 있어 지나간 삶을 밝게 떠올리게 해줍니다. 나는 항상 그 기념물들을 음미했고 지금도 그렇게 하고 있습니다. 하지만 동시에 그것들이 정적이고 생명이 없으며 문자 그대로 “살아 있지 않은” 것이기 때문에 항상 나로 잠시 생각하게 했습니다. 그 기념물에 “생명”이라는 요소를 추가할 방법이 없을까요?

다윗은 사랑하는 친구 요나단이 죽자, 그를 기억하고 그와 약속한 것을 지키고 싶었습니다(사무엘상 20:12-17). 그러나 다윗은 단순히 정적인 것을 찾기보다는 완전히 살아 있는 어떤 것을 찾아 나섰고 결 국 찾 아 냈 습 니 다 . 바 로 요나단의 아들이었습니다(사무엘하 9:3). 여기서 다윗은 극적인 결정을 합니다. 다윗은 요나단의 아들 므비보셋에게(6-7절) 호의를 베풀어주기로 결심하고(1절), 특별히 그의 토지를 회복시켜주고(“네 할아버지 사울의 모든 밭”) 먹을 것과 마실 것을 지속적으로 공급해주었습니다(“너는 항상 내 상에서 떡을 먹을지니라”).

우리가 명판과 그림으로 죽은 사람들을 계속 기리면서도, 다윗의 예를 떠올리며 아직 살아 있는 사람들에게도 호의를 베풀 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A Living Memorial of Kindness

I grew up in a church full of traditions. One came into play when a beloved family member or friend died. Often a church pew or possibly a painting in a hallway showed up not long afterward with a brass plate affixed: “ In Memory of . . .” The deceased’s name would be etched there, a shining reminder of a life passed on. I always appreciated those memorials. And I still do. Yet at the same time they’ve always given me pause because they are static, inanimate objects, in a very literal sense something “not alive.” Is there a way to add an element of “life” to the memorial?

Following the death of his beloved friend Jonathan, David wanted to remember him and to keep a promise to him (1 SAMUEL 20:12–17). But rather than simply seek something static, David searched and found something very much alive—a son of Jonathan (2 SAMUEL 9:3). David’s decision here is dramatic. He chose to extend kindness (V 1) to Mephibosheth (VV 6–7) in the specific forms of restored property (“all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul”) and the ongoing provision of food and drink (“you will always eat at my table”).

As we continue to remember those who’ve died with plaques and paintings, may we also recall David’s example and extend kindness to those still living.

용기를 불러일으킴

런던의 의회 광장에 전시되어 있는 남성 동상들(넬슨 만델라, 윈스턴 처칠, 마하트마 간디 등) 가운데 외롭게 서 있는 여성 동상 하나가 있습니다. 이 홀로 서 있는 여성은 여성들의 투표권을 위해 싸운 밀리센트 포셋입니다. 그녀는 동료 참정권론자에게 헌정했던 문구 “용기는 어디서나 용기를 불러온다.”가 새겨진 깃발을 들고 지금도 동상의 형태로 살아있습니다. 포셋은 한 사람의 용기가 다른 사람들을 담대하게 하고, 소심한 영혼들이 행동하게 한다고 주장했습니다.

다윗이 아들 솔로몬에게 왕위를 넘겨줄 준비를 하면서, 아들이 곧 짊어지게 될 무거운 책임에 관해 설명해주었습니다. 솔로몬은 자신이 직면한 상황의 중압감에 눌려 떨었던 것 같습니다. 솔로몬의 책임은 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 모든 명령을 따르게 하고, 하나님께서 그들에게 맡기신 땅을 지키며, 성전을 건축하는 기념비적인 과업을 감독하는 것이었습니다(역대상 28:8-10).

솔로몬의 마음이 떨리고 있다는 것을 안 다윗은 아들에게 아주 효과적인 말을 해주었습니다. “강하고 담대하라......두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라...... 여호와 하나님 나의 하나님이 너와 함께 계신다” (20절). 진정한 용기는 솔로몬 자신의 능력이나 자신감으로부터 오는 것이 결코 아니라, 하나님의 임재와 능력을 의지하는 데서 오는 것입니다. 하나님은 솔로몬에게 필요한 용기를 주셨습니다.

어려운 일을 당할 때 종종 우리는 담대함을 억지로 이끌어내거나 스스로 용감하다고 자기최면을 겁니다. 하지만 우리의 믿음을 새롭게 해주시는 분은 바로 하나님이십니다. 그분은 우리와 함께하실 것이고 그분의 존재가 우리에게 용기를 불러일으켜 줍니다.

The Call to Courage

Among a display of male statues (Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi, and others) in London’s Parliament Square, stands a lone statue of a woman. The solitary woman is Millicent Fawcett, who fought for the right of women to vote. She’s immortalized in bronze— holding a banner displaying words she offered in a tribute to a fellow suffragist: “Courage calls to courage everywhere.” Fawcett insisted that one person’s courage emboldens others—calling timid souls into action.

As David prepared to hand his throne over to his son Solomon, he explained the responsibilities that would soon rest heavy on his shoulders. It’s likely Solomon quivered under the weight of what he faced: leading Israel to follow all God’s instructions, guarding the land God had entrusted to them, and overseeing the monumental task of building the temple (1 CHRONICLES 28:8–10).

Knowing Solomon’s trembling heart, David offered his son powerful words: “Be strong and courageous . . . . Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you” (V 20). Real courage would never arise from Solomon’s own skill or confidence but rather from relying on God’s presence and strength. God provided the courage Solomon needed.

When we face hardship, we often try to drum up boldness or talk ourselves into bravery. God, however, is the one who renews our faith. He will be with us. And His presence calls us to courage.

족쇄에 묶였지만 침묵하지 않는

1963년 여름, 민권운동가 패니 루 하머와 다른 여섯 명의 흑인이 밤새 버스를 타고 미시시피 주 위노나에 도착해 식사를 하러 어느 식당 앞에 멈췄습니다. 경찰이 이들을 강제로 그곳에서 쫓아낸 후, 체포하여 감옥에 가두었습니다. 그러나 굴욕은 불법체포만으로 끝나지 않았습니다. 모두가 혹독하게 구타당했는데, 그 중 패니가 가장 심하게 당했습니다. 잔인한 폭행으로 거의 죽게 된 이 여인에게서 갑자기 노래가 터져 나왔습니다. “바울과 실라가 감옥에 갇혔네, 내 백성들을 가게 하라.” 그런데 노래를 부른 사람은 패니 혼자만이 아니었습니다. 육체는 매였지만 영혼은 그렇지 않았던 다른 죄수들이 그 여인의 예배에 동참했습니다.

사도행전 16장을 보면, 바울과 실라는 사람들에게 예수님을 전했다는 이유로 투옥되어 힘든 상황에 있게 되었습니다. 그러나 불편하다고 해서 그들의 믿음이 꺾이지 않았습니다. “한밤중에 바울과 실라가 기도하고 하나님을 찬송하매”(25절). 담대하게 예배드림으로써 그들은 계속해서 예수님을 전할 수 있는 기회가 주어졌습니다. “주의 말씀을 [간수와] 그 집에 있는 모든 사람에게 전하더라”(32절).

우리 대부분이 바울이나 실라나 패니가 당면했던 극한 상황에 처해지지는 않겠지만, 개인 나름대로 곤란한 처지에 있을 수 있습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 신실하신 우리 하나님으로부터 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다. 그분을 높여드리고 그분을 대변할 수 있게 하는 담대함을 가져다 줄 마음속의 노래가 우리에게도 있기를 바랍니다. 힘든 상황에 있을 때라도 말입니다.

Shackled but Not Silent

In the summer of 1963, after an all-night bus ride, civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and six other black passengers stopped to eat at a diner in Winona, Mississippi. After law enforcement officers forced them to leave, they were arrested and jailed. But the humiliation wouldn’t end with unlawful arrest. All received severe beatings, but Fannie’s was the worst. After a brutal attack that left her near death she burst out in song: “Paul and Silas was bound in jail, let my people go.” And she didn’t sing alone. Other prisoners, restrained in body but not in soul, joined her in worship.

According to Acts 16, Paul and Silas found themselves in a difficult place when they were imprisoned for telling others about Jesus. But discomfort didn’t dampen their faith. “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God” (V 25). Their bold worship created the opportunity to continue to talk about Jesus. “Then they spoke the word of the Lord to [the jailer] and to all the others in his house” (V 32).

Most of us will not likely face the extreme circumstances encountered by Paul, Silas, or Fannie, but each of us will face uncomfortable situations. When that happens, our strength comes from our faithful God. May there be a song in our hearts that will honor Him and give us boldness to speak for Him — even in the midst of trouble.
