주권적 개입

바바라는 1960년대에 영국 정부의 보호를 받으며 성장했습니다. 그런데 열여섯 살이 되자 갓 태어난 아들 사이먼과 함께 거주할 곳이 없게 되어버렸습니다. 정부는 그 나이가 된 바바라를 더 이상 보살펴줄 의무가 없었던 것입니다. 그래서 바바라는 영국 여왕에게 도움을 청하는 편지를 썼는데, 답장을 받았습니다! 여왕은 특별한 배려로 바바라가 집을 가질 수 있도록 조치해주었습니다.

영국 여왕은 바바라를 도울 수 있을 만한 재원을 가지고 있었습니다. 이런 여왕의 따뜻한 도움은 하나님의 도우심을 보여주는 하나의 모습입니다. 하늘나라의 왕이신 하나님은 우리의 모든 필요를 아시고 우리의 삶 속에서 그분의 계획을 주권적으로 실천하고 계십니다. 다만 하나님은 우리가 그분께로 다가가 우리의 모든 필요와 근심들을 그분께 아뢰면서 사랑의 관계를 맺기를 간절히 바라고 계십니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 자신들을 구원해달라는 요구를 하나님 앞에 들고 나왔습니다. 애굽에서 노예로 억눌려 고생하고 있었던 그들은 하나님께 도와달라고 부르짖었습니다. 하나님은 그 외침소리를 들으시고 그분이 하셨던 약속을 기억하셨습니다. “하나님이 이스라엘 자손을 돌보셨고 하나님이 그들을 기억하셨더라”(출애굽기 2:25). 하나님은 모세에게 자기 백성들을 자유롭게 하라고 지시하시면서, 다시 한 번 그들을 “아름답고 광대한 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅”(3:8)으로 풀어주시겠다고 선포하셨습니다.

우리의 왕이신 하나님은 우리가 그분께로 나아오는 것을 정말로 기뻐하십니다! 하나님은 반드시 우리가 원하는 대로 아닐지라도 우리가 필요로 하는 것은 알아서 공급해주십니다. 우리 모두 주권적으로, 사랑으로 베풀어주시는 하나님 안에서 안식을 누립시다.

Sovereign Intervention

Barbara grew up under the care of the British government in the 1960s, but when she turned sixteen, she and her newborn son, Simon, became homeless. The state was no longer obligated to provide for her at that age. Barbara wrote to the Queen of England for help and received a response! The Queen compassionately arranged for Barbara to be given a house of her own.

The Queen of England had the right resources to help Barbara, and her compassionate assistance can be seen as a small picture of God’s help. The King of heaven knows all of our needs and sovereignly works out His plans in our lives. As He does, however, He longs for us to come to Him—sharing our needs and other concerns—as part of our loving relationship with Him.

The Israelites brought their need for deliverance to God. They were suffering under the burden of Egyptian slavery and cried out for help. He heard them and remembered His promise: “God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them” (EXODUS 2:25). He instructed Moses to bring liberty to His people and declared that He would once again release them “into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (3:8).

Our King loves it when we come to Him! He wisely provides what we need, not necessarily what we want. Let’s rest in His sovereign, loving provision. - RUTH O'REILLY-SMITH

더 크게 나타나시는 하나님

남아프리카의 수렵보호구역 관리인 자일즈 켈만슨이 오소리 두 마리가 사자 여섯 마리와 싸웠던 믿기지 않는 상황을 이야기해주었습니다. 오소리는 수적으로 불리할 뿐더러 몸집도 열 배나 되는 사나운 포식자들로부터 물러서지 않았습니다. 사자 입장에서는 아주 간단히 상대를 죽일 수 있으리라고 생각했겠지만, 비디오 영상은 오소리들이 제법 의기양양하게 걸어서 떠나가는 모습을 보여주었습니다.

다윗과 골리앗 이야기는 그보다 훨씬 더 믿기지 않는 상황을 보여줍니다. 어리고 미숙한 다윗이 무시무시한 블레셋 사람 골리앗과 마주 선 것입니다. 골리앗은 야수 같이 힘이 세고 청동 갑옷과 치명적인 날선 창으로 완전무장하고 그와 맞서려는 어린 전사를 내려다보고 있었습니다 (사무엘상 17:5-6). 풋내기 양치기 다윗은 자기 형들에게 줄 빵과 치즈를 가지고 전쟁터에 도착했을 때 고작 돌팔매 하나만 지니고 있었을 뿐입니다(17-18절).

골리앗은 전투에 나오라고 이스라엘 군인들을 자극했지만, 어느 누구도 싸우려 들지 않았고 사울 왕과 “온 이스라엘은 크게 두려워하였습니다”(11절). 그 싸움에 다윗이 나섰을 때의 놀라운 충격을 상상해보십시오. 무엇이 이스라엘 용사 어느 누구도 갖지 못한 그런 용기를 다윗에게 주었을까요? 대부분 이스라엘 사람들의 눈에는 위압적인 골리앗만 보였습니다. 그러나 다윗은 하나님만 보았고 그래서 단호하게 말했습니다. “여호와께서 [골리앗을] 내 손에 넘기시리라”(46절). 누구나 골리앗이 이 싸움을 이길 것이라고 생각했지만, 다윗은 하나님께서 더 크게 나타나시리라는 것을 믿었습니다. 그리고 그 거인의 이마에 던진 단 한 개의 돌멩이로 다윗의 믿음은 사실로 드러났습니다.

우리는 “골리앗”(우리의 힘든 일)이 이야기를 주도하고 있다고 생각하기 쉽습니다. 하지만 하나님은 더 크신 분이십니다. 우리 인생 이야기를 이끌어 가시는 분은 바로 하나님이십니다.

God Looms Larger

Giles Kelmanson, a South African game ranger, described the incredible scene: two honey badgers battling a pride of six lions. Although outnumbered, the honey badgers refused to back down from ferocious predators ten times their size. The lions thought the kill would be simple, but video footage shows the badgers walking away with something like a swagger.

David and Goliath offer an even more improbable story. Young, inexperienced David confronted the fierce Philistine Goliath. Towering above his young combatant, Goliath possessed brute strength and unrivaled weaponry—bronze armor and a lethal, razoredged javelin (1 SAMUEL 17:5–6). David, a fledgling shepherd, carried only a slingshot when he arrived at the battlefield with bread and cheeses for his brothers (VV 17–18).

Goliath challenged Israel to engage in battle, but no one was willing to fight. King Saul and “all the Israelites were . . . terrified” (V 11). Imagine the shock when David stepped into the fray. What gave him the courage none of Israel’s hardened warriors possessed? For most, Goliath dominated their vision. David, however, saw God. “The Lord will deliver [Goliath] into my hands,” he insisted (V 46). While everyone else believed Goliath controlled the story, he believed God loomed larger. And, with a single stone to the giant’s forehead, David’s faith proved true.

We’re tempted to believe that “Goliath” (our troubles) directs the story. God is larger, however. He dominates the story of our lives. WINN COLLIER

지금 당장 시작해야

2017년 2월 말 큰 언니의 조직검사 결과가 암으로 판명되자 나는 친구들에게 말했습니다. “지금부터 캐롤린 언니와 최대한 많은 시간을 같이 보내야겠어.” 몇몇 친구들은 내가 검사 결과에 너무 과민하게 반응한다고 말했지만, 언니는 열 달을 넘기지 못하고 세상을 떠났습니다. 언니와 많은 시간을 함께 보내긴 했지만, 우리가 누군가를 사랑할 때 우리의 사랑만큼 충분한 시간을 함께 보내지 못합니다.

베드로 사도는 초대교회의 성도들에게 “뜨겁게 서로 사랑하라” (베드로전서 4:8)고 권면했습니다. 그들은 박해로 고통 받고 있었고, 그 어느 때보다도 그리스도인 공동체 안에서 형제자매들의 사랑이 필요했습니다. 하나님께서 그들의 마음에 하나님의 사랑을 가득 부어주셨기에 그 보답으로 다른 이들을 사랑하기를 그들은 원했습니다. 그들의 사랑은 기도하고, 친절하게 맞아주며, 온화하고 진실한 대화를 통해 나타났습니다. 이 모든 것은 하나님이 주신 능력에서 비롯된 것이었습니다(9-11절). 하나님은 그분의 선하신 목적을 이루시기 위해 그들이 서로를 희생적으로 섬길 수 있게 은혜를 내려주셔서 “범사에 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님이 영광을 받으시게”(11절) 하셨습니다. 이것은 우리를 통해 하나님의 뜻을 이루시려는 그분의 능력 있는 계획입니다.

우리는 이웃이 필요하고 이웃도 우리가 필요합니다. 하나님께 받은 모든 시간과 재원을 사랑하는 일에 사용하도록 합시다. 지금 당장 시작합시다.

Starting Now

When my oldest sister’s biopsy revealed cancer in late February 2017, I remarked to friends, “I need to spend as much time with Carolyn as possible— starting now.” Some told me my feelings were an overreaction to the news. But she died within ten months. And even though I had spent hours with her, when we love someone there’s never enough time for our hearts to love enough.

The apostle Peter called Jesus’s followers in the early church to “love each other deeply” (1 PETER 4:8). They were suffering under persecution and needed the love of their brothers and sisters in their Christian community more than ever. Because God had poured His own love into their hearts, they would then want to love others in return. Their love would be expressed through praying, offering gracious hospitality, and gentle and truthful conversation—all in the strength God provided (VV 9–11). Through His grace, God had gifted them to sacrificially serve each other for His good purposes. So that “in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ” (V 11). This is God’s powerful plan that accomplishes His will through us.

We need others and they need us. Let’s use whatever time or resources we have received from God to love—starting now. - ANNE CETAS

말하는 대로 실천하기

목회자이자 작가인 유진 피터슨이 스위스 내과 의사로 매우 존경받는 목회상담가 폴 투르니에의 강의를 들을 기회가 있었습니다. 피터슨은 미리 읽어 둔 투르니에 박사의 행적에서 그의 치료 방법에 이미 감탄하고 있었습니다. 과연 강의는 피터슨에게 깊은 인상을 남겼습니다. 피터슨은 강의를 들으면서 투르니에 박사가 말하는 대로 살아왔으며 실제 삶의 경험을 말하는 것이라는 느낌을 받았습니다. 피터슨은 이 경험을 다음 한마디로 표현했습니다. “‘언행일치.’ 이것 말고는 적당한 표현을 생각할 수 없다.”

‘언행일치.’ 어떤 사람들은 이 말을 “말하는 대로 실천하기” 또는 “말한 것을 행동으로 옮기기”라고 일컫습니다. 요한 사도는 우리 중에 누구든지 “빛 가운데 있다 하면서 그 형제를 미워하는 자는 지금까지 어둠에 있는 자”(요한1서 2:9) 라고 분명히 말했습니다. 본질적으로 우리의 생활과 말은 정말 일치되지 않습니다. 요한은 더 나아가 그런 사람들은 “갈 곳을 알지 못 한다”(11절)라고 말합니다. 그렇게 언행이 일치하지 않는 우리의 상태를 설명하기 위해 요한이 선택한 단어가 무엇입니까? ‘눈이 멀었다’는 말입니다.

우리가 말씀의 빛으로 길을 밝히면서 하나님과 긴밀한 관계를 유지하며 살아갈 때 우리의 눈은 밝아집니다. 그 결과, 나날의 삶을 똑똑히 집중해서 볼 수 있는 경건한 안목을 갖게 되고 우리의 말과 행동이 일치하게 됩니다. 그러면 다른 사람들이 그것을 보면서 우리가 가야할 길을 다 알고 있는 사람이라고 생각하기보다는, 우리가 따르고 있는 그분이 어떤 분인지를 분명히 아는 사람들이라는 인상을 받게 될 것입니다.

Practicing What We Preach

Pastor and writer Eugene Peterson had the opportunity to hear a lecture by Swiss physician and highly respected pastoral counselor Paul Tournier. Peterson had read the doctor’s works, and admired his approach to healing. The lecture left a deep impression on Peterson. As he listened, he had the feeling that Tournier lived what he spoke and spoke what he lived. Peterson chose this word to describe his experience: “ Congruence . It is the best word I can come up with.”

Congruence— it’s what some refer to as “practicing what you preach” or “walking your talk.” The apostle John stresses that if any of us “claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister,” then we’re “still in the darkness” (1 JOHN 2:9). In essence, our lives and our words simply don’t match up. John goes further to say such people “do not know where they are going” (V 11). The word he chose to describe how incongruence leaves us? Blind .

Living closely aligned to God by allowing the light of His Word to illuminate our paths keeps us from living blind. The result is a godly vision that gives clarity and focus to our days— our words and actions match up. When others observe this, the impression is not necessarily that of someone who knows everywhere they’re going, but of someone who clearly knows who they’re following. - JOHN BLASE

모든 이야기가

나는 기발한 삽화가 들어 있는 어린이 성경책을 펴서 손자에게 읽어주기 시작했습니다. 하나님의 사랑과 베풀어주심에 관한 내용이 산문 형태의 글로 펼쳐지자 우리는 바로 매료되었습니다. 읽던 데를 표시해두고 책을 덮고 책 제목을 다시 읽어보았습니다. ‘예수님의 이야기책 성경: 모든 이야기가 그분의 이름을 속삭여준다.’

모 든 이야기가 그분의 이름을 속삭여줍니다.

사실 성경은, 특히 구약성경은 종종 이해하기가 힘듭니다. 왜 하나님을 알지 못하는 사람들이 하나님의 사람들을 이기는 것 같이 보일까요? 우리가 아는 하나님의 성품은 순결하고 그분의 목적은 우리를 위한 것일 텐데, 어떻게 그토록 잔인한 일을 허락하시는 걸까요?

예수님은 부활하신 후 엠마오로 가는 길에서 제자 두 사람을 만나셨는데, 제자들은 예수님을 알아보지 못했으며 또 자신들이 소망을 걸었던 메시아가 죽었다는 사실에 실망하여 힘들어하고 있었습니다(누가복음 24:19-24). 그들은 “그분이야말로 이스라엘을 구원하실 분이라는 것을 알고서, 그분에게 소망을 걸고 있었던”(21절, 새번역) 것입니다. 누가는 이어서 예수님이 그 제자들을 어떻게 안심시켜 주셨는지 기록합니다. “[예수님께서] 모세와 모든 선지자의 글로 시작하여 모든 성경에 쓴 바 자기에 관한 것을 자세히 설명하시니라”(27절).

모든 이야기가, 이해하기 힘든 이야기까지도 그분의 이름을 속삭이고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그 이야기들은 전체적으로 망가진 이 세상의 모습과 함께, 그래서 우리에게 구원자가 필요하다는 것을 보여주고 있기 때문입니다. 모든 행위와 사건, 모든 간섭이 하나님께서 고집스러운 사랑하는 자기 백성들을 위해 계획해두신, 우리를 그분께로 다시 인도하시려는 구원을 가리키고 있습니다.

Every Story

I opened the whimsically illustrated children’s Bible and began to read to my grandson. Immediately we were enthralled as the story of God’s love and provision unfurled in prose. Marking our place, I turned the book over and read the title once again: The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name.

Every story whispers His name.

To be honest, sometimes the Bible, especially the Old Testament, is hard to understand. Why do those who don’t know God seem to triumph over God’s own? How can God permit such cruelty when we know that His character is pure and that His purposes are for our good?

After His resurrection, Jesus met two followers on the road to Emmaus who didn’t recognize Him and were struggling with disappointment over the death of their hopedfor Messiah (LUKE 24:19–24). They had “hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (V 21). Luke then records how Jesus reassured them: “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, [Jesus] explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” (V 27).

Every story whispers His name, even the hard stories, because they reveal the comprehensive brokenness of our world and our need for a Rescuer. Every act, every event, every intervention points to the redemption God designed for His wayward loved ones: to bring us back to Himself. - ELISA MORGAN

하나님 앞에 정직하자

세 살 된 우리 손자가 엉망이 된 기분으로 하루를 시작했습니다. 자기가 좋아하는 셔츠를 찾을 수 없었고 좋아하는 신발을 신기에는 너무 더웠습니다. 이에 안달을 부리고 할머니에게 화를 내며 씩씩거리더니 이내 주저앉아 울음을 터뜨렸습니다.

“너 왜 그렇게 화가 났니?” 아이에게 물으며 잠시 같이 이야기를 하는 동안, 아이가 수그러지기에 조용히 물어 보았습니다. “너 할머니에게 잘했니?” 아이는 신발을 쳐다보며 생각에 잠기더니대답했습니다. “아뇨. 그렇지 못했어요. 미안해요.”

손자에 대한 내 화가 풀렸습니다. 아이는 자기가 한 일을 하지 않았다고 잡아떼지 않고 정직하게 말했기 때문 입니다. 손자와 함께 나는 잠시 동안 예수님께 우리가 잘못 할 때 용서해주시고 더 잘 할 수 있게 도와달라고 기도했습니다.

이사야 1장에서 하나님은 잘못을 저지른 그의 백성들과 맞서고 있습니다. 법정에는 뇌물과 불의가 만연했고, 고아와 과부들은 물질적인 이득을 위해 이용당하고 있었습니다. 그런 가운데서도 하나님은 관용을 베풀어 유다 백성들이 저지른 일을 고백하고 거기서 돌아서라고 권유하고 계십니다. “오라 우리가 서로 변론하자 너희의 죄가 주홍 같을지라도 눈과 같이 희어질 것이요”(이사야 1:18).

하나님은 우리의 죄를 그분께 털어놓기를 간절히 바라고 계십니다. 하나님은 우리가 정직하게 회개할 때 사랑으로 용서해주십니다. “만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요”(요한1서 1:9). 우리 하나님은 자비로운 분이시기 때문에 우리는 언제나 다시 시작할 수 있습니다!

Honest to God

My three-year-old grandson’s day was off to a rotten start. He couldn’t find his favorite shirt. The shoes he wanted to wear were too hot. He fussed and fumed at his grandmother and then sat down to cry.

“Why are you so upset?” I asked. We talked for a while and after he calmed down, I gently inquired, “Have you been good for Grandma?” He looked thoughtfully at his shoes and responded, “No, I was bad. I’m sorry.”

My heart went out to him. Instead of denying what he had done, he was honest. In the following moments we asked Jesus to forgive us when we do wrong and to help us do better.

In Isaiah 1, God confronts His people about wrongs they’d committed. Bribes and injustice were rampant in the courts, and orphans and widows were taken advantage of for material gain. Yet even then God responded mercifully, asking the people of Judah to confess what they’d done and turn from it: “Come now, let us settle the matter . . . . Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (ISAIAH 1:18).

God longs for us to be open with Him about our sins. He meets honesty and repentance with loving forgiveness: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:9). “평강을 어떻게 생각해?” 점식식사를 같이 하던 친구가 물었습니다. “평강?” 나는 어리둥절하여 되물었습니다. “잘 모르겠네. 그런데 왜 그걸 물어봐?” 친구의 대답입니다. “사실, 네가 교회에서 예배 중에 발을 떨어서 무슨 불안한 일이 있나 해서. 하나님께서 그분을 사랑하는 이들에게 주시는 평강에 대해서 혹시 생각해본 적 있니?”

몇 해 전 일이었는데, 그날 그 친구 말에 마음이 좀 상하기는 했었지만, 그 일은 나에게 어떤 탐구를 시작하는 계기가 되었습니다. 하나님의 사람들이 역경 속에서도 안녕과 평강이라는 선물을 어떻게 누리는지 알아보려고 성경을 탐독하기 시작한 것입니다. 바울이 골로새 성도들에게 보낸 서신을 읽으면서 그리스도의 평강이 그들의 마음을 다스리게 하라는 바울의 명령 (골로새서 3:15)을 되새겨보았습니다.

바울은 한 번도 가본 적이 없었던 친구 에바브라로부터 전해들은 어떤 교회에 편지를 쓰고 있었습니다. 바울은 그들이 잘못된 가르침을 접했기 때문에 그리스도의 평강을 잃어가고 있다고 염려하면서도, 그들을 책망하는 대신 확신과 소망을 주시는 예수님을 신뢰하라고 권면했습니다(15절).

그리스도의 평강이 우리 마음을 다스리도록 받아들일지 거부할지 선택해야 할 때가 누구에게나 있습니다. 우리가 예수님을 향하여 우리 안에 거하시기를 간구할 때, 주님은 우리 마음을 짓누르고 있는 근심과 걱정을 가볍게 벗겨주십니다. 우리가 주님께 평강을 간구하면, 주님은 우리를 사랑으로 만나주실 것입니다.

How to Find Peace

“What do you think about peace?” my friend asked as we ate lunch together. “Peace?” I said, puzzled. “I’m not sure—why do you ask?” He answered, “Well, as you jiggled your foot during the church service I wondered if you’re agitated about something. Have you considered the peace God gives to those who love Him?”

That day some years ago, I was a bit hurt by my friend’s question, but it started me on a journey. I began exploring the Bible to see how God’s people embraced this gift of wellbeing, of peace, even in the midst of hardship. As I read Paul’s letter to the Colossians, I chewed over the apostle’s command to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts (COLOSSIANS 3:15).

Paul was writing to a church he’d never visited but had heard about from his friend Epaphras. He was concerned that as they encountered false teaching, they were losing the peace of Christ. But instead of admonishing them, Paul encouraged them to trust Jesus, who would give them assurance and hope (V 15).

We all will encounter times when we can choose to embrace or refuse the rule of Christ’s peace in our hearts. As we turn to Him, asking Jesus to dwell in us, He will gently release us from the anxiety and cares that weigh us down. As we seek His peace, we trust that He will meet us with His love. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

좁은 원

같은 반 친구가 우리 가족에게 너무 나이가 많아 새끼를 낳을 수 없는 등록된 콜리 개 한 마리를 주었습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 우리는 이 예쁜 개가 가엾게도 거의 평생을 좁은 개집 안에서 살았다는 것을 알게 되었습니 다. 개는 좁은 원을 그리며 빙빙 돌기만 할 뿐, 물건을 물어오지도, 앞으로 똑바로 달려가지도 못했습니다. 심지어 뛰어놀 수 있는 넓은 마당에 풀어놓아도 자신이 갇혀 있다고 생각했습니다.

대 부 분 이 유 대 인 이 었 던 초 대 그리스도인들도 모세의 율법에 갇혀 사는데 익숙해 있었습니다. 비록 율법이 유익한 것이고 그들의 죄를 알게 하여 예수님께로 오게 하려고 하나님이 주신 것이긴 했지만(갈라디아서 3:19-25), 이제는 하나님의 은혜와 예수님이 주는 자유에 기반을 둔 새로운 믿음에 따라 살아야 할 때였습니다. 그러나 그들은 주저했습니다. ‘그 후 그들이 진정 자유로웠을까요?’

우리도 같은 문제를 지니고 있을 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 우리도 우리를 가두는 엄격한 규칙이 있는 교회에서 자라났거나, 아니면 방임하는 가정에서 자라 이제는 안전한 규칙을 절실히 필요로 하는지 모릅니다. 어느 경우이든지 지금은 우리가 그리스도 안에서의 자유를 받아들일 때입니다(갈라디아서 5:1). 예수님은 우리를 자유롭게 하셔서 사랑으로 그분께 순종하고(요한복음 14:21) “사랑으로 서로 종노릇하게”(갈라디아서 5:13) 하셨습니다. “아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라”(요한복음 8:36)는 말씀을 깨닫는 자들에게는 기쁨과 사랑의 들판 전체가 활짝 열려 있습니다.

Tight Circles

A classmate gave my family a registered collie that had become too old to breed puppies. We soon learned this beautiful dog had, sadly, spent much of her life inside a small pen. She would only walk in tight circles. She couldn’t fetch or run in a straight line. And even with a large yard in which to play, she thought she was fenced in.

The first Christians, many who were Jews, were used to being fenced in by the Mosaic law. Though the law was good and had been given by God to convict them of sin and lead them to Jesus (GALATIANS 3:19–25), it was time to live out their new faith based in God’s grace and the freedom of Christ. They hesitated. After all this time, were they really free?

We may have the same problem. Perhaps we grew up in churches with rigid rules that fenced us in. Or we were raised in permissive homes and are now desperate for the security of rules. Either way, it’s time to embrace our freedom in Christ (GALATIANS 5:1). Jesus has freed us to obey Him out of love (JOHN 14:21) and to “serve one another humbly in love” (GALATIANS 5:13). An entire field of joy and love is open for those who realize “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (JOHN 8:36). - MIKE WITTMER

위대한 일들!

1989년 11월 9일, 베를린 장벽이 무너졌다는 소식에 세계가 놀랐습니다. 독일의 베를린을 갈라놓았던 장벽이 무너져 내리고 28년간 분단되었던 도시가 다시 하나가 되려 하고 있었습니다. 기쁨의 중심은 독일이었지만 그 광경을 지켜보는 세계 또한 열광하며 동참했습니다. 정말 굉장한 일이 일어난 것입니다!

기원전 538년, 이스라엘 백성들이 거의 70년 동안의 망명생활을 끝내고 본토로 귀환했을 때, 이 또한 중대한 사건이었습니다. 시편 126편은 이스라엘 역사에서 그 기쁨에 차있던 때를 어깨 너머로 바라보는 것으로 시작하고 있습니다. 그때의 일들은 웃음소리와 기쁨의 노래, 그리고 하나님께서 자기 백성을 위해 행하신 위대한 일을 온 세상이 인정하는 것이 주된 것이었습니다(2절). 그러면 하나님의 자비로 구원 받은 사람들의 반응은 어땠을까요? 하나님이 행하신 위대한 일들이 커다란 기쁨을 불러 일으켰습니다(3절). 나아가 하나님이 과거에 행하신 일들이 현재 새로운 기도의 기초가 되었고, 미래를 위한 밝은 소망이 되었습니다(4-6절).

하나님이 행하신 위대한 일들의 본보기를 찾기 위해 우리의 경험들을 다 돌아볼 필요가 없습니다. 특히 우리가 하나님의 아들 예수님을 통해 하나님을 믿고 있다면 더욱 그렇습니다. 19세기의 찬송가 작가 패니 크로스비는 그런 정서를 잘 포착하여 이런 가사를 썼습니다. “놀라워라 주께서 이루신 일. 큰 영광과 존귀를 늘 돌리세.” 그렇습니다. 위대한 일을 행하신 하나님께 영광을 돌려드립시다!

Great Things!

On November 9, 1989, the world was astonished by the news of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The wall that had divided Berlin, Germany, was coming down and the city that had been divided for twenty-eight years would be united again. Though the epicenter of joy was Germany, an onlooking world shared in the excitement. Something great had taken place!

When Israel returned to her homeland in 538 BC after being exiled for almost seventy years, it was also momentous. Psalm 126 begins with an over-the-shoulder look at that joy-filled time in the history of Israel. The experience was marked by laughter, joyful singing, and international recognition that God had done great things for His people (V 2). And what was the response of the recipients of His rescuing mercy? Great things from God prompted great gladness (V 3). Furthermore, His works in the past became the basis for fresh prayers for the present and bright hope for the future (VV 4–6).

You and I need not look far in our own experiences for examples of great things from God, especially if we believe in God through His Son, Jesus. Nineteenth-century hymn writer Fanny Crosby captured this sentiment when she wrote, “Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son.” Yes, to God be the glory, great things He has done! - ARTHUR JACKSON

목소리를 사용하라

나는 세계적으로 유명한 피아니스트를 만나는 자리에 초대를 받았습니다. 나는 어릴 적부터 바이올린과 피아노를 연주하고 교회나 다른 행사에서 주로 독창을 하면서 음악에 푹 빠져 자랐기 때문에 이런 기회를 갖게 된 것이 너무나 기뻤습니다.

도착해서 그 피아니스트를 만나보니 그 사람이 영어를 잘 못한다는 것을 알았습니다. 그리고 놀랍게도 내가 한 번도 만져보지 않았던 악기인 첼로를 주면서 그것을 연주해보라고 했습니다. 그는 첼로를 연주하라고 강권하면서, 그렇게 하면 자기가 반주를 하겠다고 했습니다. 나는 전에 배웠던 바이올린 연주하는 것을 흉내내봤지만 몇 개의 귀에 거슬리는 날카로운 소리를 내는데 그쳤습니다. 결국 나는 못하겠다고 하고는 서로 헤어졌습니다.

잠에서 깨어난 나는 그 상황이 꿈이었다는 것을 알았습니다. 하지만 꿈속에 나타난 그 음악적인 배경이 실제와 같았기 때문에 이런 말이 계속 생각 속에 맴돌았습니다. ‘왜 그 사람에게 내가 노래를 할 수 있다고 말하지 못했을까?’

하나님은 다른 사람을 위해 우리의 타고난 재능과 영적 은사를 개발할 수 있도록 우리를 준비시켜 주십니다(고린도전서 12:7). 기도하는 마음으로 성경을 읽고 사람들의 지혜 있는 조언을 들으면서 우리 자신의 고유한 영적 은사(혹은 은사들)를 더 잘 알게 될 수 있습니다. 바울 사도는 우리의 영적 은사가 무엇이든 성령께서 “그의 뜻대로”(11절) 은사들을 나누어주신다는 것을 알고, 부지런히 그것을 찾아서 사용해야 한다고 일깨워줍니다.

성령께서 우리에게 주신 “목소리”를 사용하여 하나님을 높여드리고 예수님을 믿는 다른 성도들을 섬기도록 합시다.

Use Your Voice

I was invited to meet a world-renowned pianist. Since I grew up immersed in music—playing the violin and piano, and primarily singing solos for church and other events—I was thrilled at the opportunity.

When I arrived to meet the pianist, I realized he spoke little English; and to my surprise he provided a cello for me to play—an instrument I’d never touched. He insisted that I play and he would accompany me. I screeched out a few notes, trying to mimic my violin training. Finally admitting that I was lost, we parted ways.

I awoke, realizing the scenario had been a dream. But since the musical background presented in my dream was true, in my mind lingered the words, Why didn’t you tell him you could sing?

God equips us to develop our natural talents and our spiritual gifts for others (1 CORINTHIANS 12:7). Through prayerful reading of the Bible and the wise advice of others, we can better understand the spiritual gift (or gifts) that is uniquely ours. The apostle Paul reminds us that whatever our spiritual gift, we’re to take time to find it and use it, knowing that the Spirit distributes the gifts “just as he determines” (V 11).
