쓰레기에서 보물로

폐품을 수집하는 그 사람의 집은 보고타의 빈민지역의 가파른 길 맨 꼭대기에 위치하고 있습니다. 콜롬비아의 수도 안에 전혀 특별해 보이지 않는 이 평범한 주거지에는 무료로 이용할 수 있는 책 25,000권이 소장되어 있습니다. 이것은 다 버려진 책들을 호세 알베르토 구티에레즈가 자기 지역의 가난한 아이들이 읽으라고 수집한 것들입니다.

주말에 “도서관 이용시간”이 되면 동네 아이들이 이 집으로 몰려옵니다. 책으로 가득 채워져 있는 각 방들을 돌아다니며 아이들은 이 허름한 집을 그냥 호세 아저씨의 집이라 생각하지 않습니다. 그것은 이루 말할 수 없이 소중한 보물의 집인 것입니다.

그리스도를 따르는 모든 이들도 이와 같습니다. 보잘것없는 진흙으로 빚어진 우리는 금이 가고 쉽게 부서집니다. 그러나 하나님께서 상하고 망가진 세상에 그리스도의 복음을 전하게 하는 권능의 성령이 머무는 집으로 우리를 믿고 정하셨습니다. 평범하고 망가지기 쉬운 사람들에게 그 일은 매우 큰 사명입니다.

바울 사도는 옛 도시 고린도에서 “우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라”(고린도후서 4:7)고 성도들에게 말했습니다. 바울은 그들도 그 지역 사람들의 성향을 그대로 지니고 있기 때문에 많은 사람들이 “[그들] 자신을 전파하려는” 충동에 쉽게 빠질 수 있다고 했습니다(5절).

그러나 바울은 오히려 우리 안에 사시는 존귀하신 그분에 대해 사람들에게 전하라고 말합니다. 우리의 평범한 삶을 말할 수 없이 소중한 보고로 바꾸는 것은 바로 그분, 그리고 모든 것을 능가하시는 그분의 권능입니다.

From Trash to Treasure

The trash man’s house sits atop a steep street in a poor Bogota neighborhood. Not one thing about it looks special. Yet the unassuming abode in Colombia’s capital is home to a free library of 25,000 books—discarded literature that Jose Alberto Gutierrez collected to share with poor children in his community.

Local kids crowd into the house during weekend “library hours.” Prowling through every room, each packed with books, the children recognize the humble home as more than Señor Jose’s house— it’s a priceless treasury.

The same is true for every follower of Christ. We’re made of humble clay—marred by cracks and easily broken. But we’re entrusted by God as a home for His empowering Spirit, who enables us to carry the good news of Christ into a hurting, broken world. It’s a big job for ordinary, fragile people.

“We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:7), the apostle Paul told his congregation in the ancient city of Corinth. They were a cross section of people from across this region, so many might have been tempted to “go around preaching about [them]selves,” Paul said (V 5 NLT ).

Instead, Paul said, tell others about the priceless One living inside of us. It’s Him and His all-surpassing power that turns our ordinary lives into a priceless treasury. - PATRICIA RAYBON

불도그와 스프링클러

여름철이 되면 거의 매일 아침 우리 집 뒤에 있는 공원에서 한 편의 유쾌한 드라마가 펼쳐집니다. 거기에는 스프링클러와 불도그 한 마리가 등장합니다. 6시 반 쯤 되면 스프링클러가 돌아가고 잠시 후에 불도그 피피(우리 가족이 지어준 이름) 가 도착합니다.

피피의 주인이 끈 을 풀어주면 불도그는 온 힘을 다해 가장 가까운 스프링클러로 달려가 물줄기에 달려 들어 얼굴을 흠뻑 적십니다. 피피가 스프링클러를 먹을 수만 있다면 아마도 먹을 것 같습니다. 이 장면은 피피가 물에 대해 결코 질리지 않고 흠뻑 젖어보고 싶어 하는, 무언가로 완전히 채우고자 하는 한없는 욕구를 보여줍니다.

성경에는 불도그도 스프링클러도 등장하지 않습니다. 그러나 어떤 면에서 에베소서 3장에 있는 바울의 기도는 피피를 생각나게 합니다. 바울은 그의 기도에서 에베소 교회 성도들이 하나님의 사랑으로 가득 채워져 “능히 모든 성도와 함께 지식에 넘치는 그리스도의 사랑을 알고 그 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠함을 깨달아” 우리가 “하나님의 모든 충만하신 것으로 충만하게” 되기를 기도하고 있습니다(18-19절).

오늘날까지도 우리는 다 이해할 수 없는 무한한 사랑의 하나님을 경험하여 그분의 선하심에 흠뻑 젖고 채워져 온전한 기쁨을 누리라는 초대를 받고 있습니다. 우리는 우리 마음과 삶을 사랑과 의미와 목적으로 채우실 수 있는 유일하신 그분과의 관계 속으로 자유롭고 즐겁고 기쁜 마음으로 뛰어들 수 있습니다.

The Bulldog and the Sprinkler

Most summer mornings, a delightful drama plays out in the park behind our house. It involves a sprinkler. And a bulldog. About 6:30 or so, the sprinklers come on. Shortly thereafter, Fifi the bulldog (our family’s name for her) arrives.

Fifi’s owner lets her off her leash. The bulldog sprints with all her might to the nearest sprinkler, attacking the stream of water as it douses her face. If Fifi could eat the sprinkler, I think she would. It’s a portrait of utter exuberance, of Fifi’s seemingly infinite desire to be drenched by the liquid she can never get enough of.

There are no bulldogs in the Bible, or sprinklers. Yet, in a way, Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3 reminds me of Fifi. There, Paul prays that the Ephesian believers might be filled with God’s love and “have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” He prayed that we might be “filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (VV 18–19).

Still today, we’re invited to experience a God whose infinite love exceeds anything we can comprehend, that we too might be drenched, saturated, and utterly satisfied by His goodness. We’re free to plunge with abandon, relish, and delight into a relationship with the One who alone can fill our hearts and lives with love, meaning, and purpose. - ADAM HOLZ

너 지금 배고프니?

토마스는 자신이 무슨 일을 해야 할지 알았습니다. 인도의 가난한 가정에서 태어나 미국 가정에 입양되었던 그가 모국을 방문했을 때 고향 어린이들의 절박한 어려움을 목격하고 나서였습니다. 그래서 그들을 도와야 한다고 생각하고는, 미국에 돌아가 학업을 마치고 돈을 모아서 훗날 다시 올 계획을 세우기 시작한 것입니다.

“만일 사람이 믿음이 있노라 하고 행함이 없으면 무슨 유익이 있으리요” 라고 묻고 있는 야고보서 2:14-18 말씀을 읽을 때, 토마스는 자기 나라의 한 어린 여자아이가 “엄마, 나 지금 배고파!” 하고 외치는 소리를 들었습니다. 자신이 어렸을 때 너무 배가 고파 쓰레기통을 뒤져 먹을 것을 찾던 일이 기억났습니다. 토마스는 배고픈 아이들을 돕기 위해 몇 년을 더 기다릴 수 없어서 “지금 당장 시작해야겠다!”고 결심했습니다.

토마스가 시작한 보육원에는 지금 50명의 어린이들이 양질의 급식과 보살핌 아래 예수님에 대해 배우고 또 일반 교육도 받고 있습니다. 이 모든 것은 하나님께서 하라고 하신 일이 무엇인지 알았던 한 사람이 그 일을 미루지 않았기 때문에 이루어진 것입니다.

야고보의 메시지는 우리에게도 적용이 됩니다. 예수 그리스도를 믿을 때 우리는 많은 유익을 얻을 수 있습니다. 주님과 교제할 수 있고 풍성한 삶과 희망 찬 미래를 누리게 됩니다. 그렇지만 도움이 절실한 사람들에게 실제로 다가가 도와주지 않는다면 그 믿음이 무슨 소용이 있을까요? “나 지금 배고파”라는 외침이 들리지 않습니까?

Are You Hungry Now?

Thomas knew what he needed to do. Having been born to a poor family in India and adopted by Americans, upon a return trip to India he witnessed the dire needs of the children in his hometown. So he knew he had to help. He began making plans to return to the US, finish his education, save a lot of money, and come back in the future.

Then, after reading James 2:14–18 in which the apostle asks, “What good is it . . . if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?” Thomas heard a little girl in his native country cry out to her mother: “But Mommy, I’m hungry now!” He was reminded of the times he had been intensely hungry as a child—searching through trash cans for food. Thomas knew he couldn’t wait years to help. He decided, “I’ll start now!”

Today the orphanage he began houses fifty well-fed and cared for children who are learning about Jesus and getting an education—all because one man didn’t put off what he knew God was asking him to do.

James’s message applies to us as well. Our faith in Jesus Christ provides us with great advantages—a relationship with Him, an abundant life, and a future hope. But what good is it doing anyone else if we don’t reach out and help those in need? Can you hear the cry: “I’m hungry now?” - DAVE BRANON

새 렌즈를 통하여

아버지는 “나무를 볼 때 단지 뭉뚱그려진 녹색이 아니라 이파리 하나하나를 보게 되면 정말 놀라울 거야!”라고 말했습니다. 딱 맞는 말이었습니다. 당시 열여덟 살이었던 나는 새로 안경을 써야 한다는 사실이 별로 달갑지 않았지만 안경을 쓰면서 내가 보는 모든 것이 달리 보였습니다. 흐릿하게 보이던 것들이 아름답게 보인 것입니다!

성경을 읽을 때 어떤 부분들은 안경 없이 나무를 보는 것처럼 흐릿해 보입니다. 그래서 볼 것이 그리 많지 않아 보입니다. 그러나 자세한 것을 알게 되면 지루해 보였던 구절이 아름답게 드러나 보이기도 합니다.

내가 출애굽기를 읽을 때 그랬습니다. 이스라엘 백성 가운데 하나님이 거하실 임시처소인 성막을 짓기 위해 하나님이 내리신 지시들은 지루할 만큼 자세하여 흐릿하게 보일 수 있습니다. 그런데 하나님께서 등잔대 만드는 방법을 알려주시는 25장 끝 부분에서 나는 잠시 멈추었습니다. 등잔대의 밑받침과 줄기, 등잔, 꽃받침, 그리고 꽃은 “순금으로” 만들어야 했고(31절), 등잔은 “살구꽃 형상”이어야 했습니다(34절).

살구나무는 매우 아름답습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그 자연의 아름다움을 성막에 포함시키신 것입니다!

바울은 “하나님의 보이지 아니하는 것들 곧 그의 영원하신 능력과 신성이” 창조물을 통해 보이고 알려지게 된다고 기록했습니다 (로마서 1:20). 하나님의 아름다움을 보려면 때로는 새 렌즈를 끼고 하나님의 창조물과 성경의 재미없어 보이는 구절들을 보아야 합니다.

Through a New Lens

“It must be amazing to look at a tree and see the individual leaves instead of just a blur of green!” my dad said. I couldn’t have said it better. I was eighteen at the time and not a fan of my new need to wear glasses, but they changed the way I saw everything, making the blurry beautiful!

When reading Scripture, I view certain books like I do when I look at trees without my glasses. There doesn’t seem to be much to see. But noticing details can reveal the beauty in what might seem to be a boring passage.

This happened to me when I was reading Exodus. God’s directions for building the tabernacle—His temporary dwelling place among the Israelites —can seem like a blur of boring details. But I paused at the end of chapter 25 where God gave directions for the lampstand. It was to be hammered out “of pure gold,” including its base and shaft and its flowerlike cups, buds, and blossoms (V 31). The cups were to be “shaped like almond flowers” (V 34).

Almond trees are breathtaking. And God incorporated that same natural beauty into His tabernacle!

Paul wrote, “God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature” are seen and understood in creation (ROMANS 1:20). To see God’s beauty, sometimes we have to look at creation, and what might seem like uninteresting passages in the Bible, through a new lens. - JULIE SCHWAB

상어가 물지 않을 때

아이들은 아주 신이 났지만 나는 불안했습니다. 휴가 중에 우리 가족이 어느 수족관을 찾아갔는데, 그곳에서는 특수탱크 안에 갇혀 있는 작은 상어들을 직접 만져볼 수 있었습니다. 내가 안내원에게 저 상어들이 한 번이라도 손가락을 물은 적이 있는지 묻자 안내원은 얼마 전에 먹이를 주었고, 그러고 나서 먹이를 ‘더’ 주었다고 말했습니다. 상어들이 배고프지 않아 물지 않을 것이라는 말이었습니다.

잠언서의 한 구절을 통해 상어를 만질 수 있다는 사실이 이해가 되었습니다. “배부른 자는 꿀이라도 싫어하고 주린 자에게는 쓴 것이라도 다니라”(잠언 27:7). 배고픔, 곧 내면의 공허함은 어떤 결정을 내릴 때 분별력을 약화시킬 수 있습니다. 그것은 우리를 채워주는 것이라면 심지어 다른 사람에게 상처를 주게 되더라도 무엇이든 받아들여도 괜찮다는 확신을 가지게 만듭니다.

하나님은 그저 욕망을 따라 사는 것 이상의 삶을 우리에게 원하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 그리스도의 사랑으로 충만해서 모든 일을 주님이 주시는 평강과 안정감으로 행하기를 바라십니다. 우리는 조건 없이 사랑받고 있다는 것을 늘 깨달음으로 자신감을 얻습니다. 그것은 우리가 인생에서 성공이나 재산, 인간관계 같은 “달콤한” 것들에 마음을 쓸 때 신중할 수 있도록 도와줍니다.

우리는 오직 예수님과의 관계를 통해서만 진정한 만족을 얻을 수 있습니다. 우리를 향한 그분의 놀라운 사랑을 온전히 깨달아 우리 자신 뿐 아니라 다른 사람들을 위해 “하나님의 모든 충만하신 것으로 충만하게”(에베소서 3:19) 되기를 소망합니다.

When Sharks Won’t Bite

My children were thrilled, but I felt uneasy. During a vacation, we visited an aquarium where people could pet small sharks kept in a special tank. When I asked the attendant if the creatures ever snapped at fingers, she explained that the sharks had recently been fed and then given extra food. They wouldn’t bite because they weren’t hungry.

What I learned about shark petting makes sense according to a proverb: “One who is full loathes honey from the comb, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet” (PROVERBS 27:7). Hunger—that sense of inner emptiness—can weaken our discernment as we make decisions. It convinces us that it’s okay to settle for anything that fills us up, even if it causes us to take a bite out of someone.

God wants more for us than a life lived at the mercy of our appetites. He wants us to be filled with Christ’s love so that everything we do flows from the peace and stability He provides. The constant awareness that we’re unconditionally loved gives us confidence. It enables us to be selective as we consider the “sweet” things in life—achievements, possessions, and relationships.

Only a relationship with Jesus gives true satisfaction. May we grasp His incredible love for us so we can be “filled to the measure [with] all the fullness of God” (EPHESIANS 3:19) for our sake—and the sake of others. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

하나님의 방향 전환

우리는 “안 돼” 또는 “지금은 아니야”라는 말을 들으면 힘들어지기도 합니다. 특히 하나님이 다른 사람들을 섬길 기회의 문을 열어주셨다고 느꼈을 때 그런 말을 들으면 더 그렇습니다. 내가 목회사역을 시작할 당시, 나의 은사와 재능이 그 교회의 필요를 채워줄 수 있을 거라고 여겼던 기회가 두 번 있었지만 결국 둘 다 문이 닫히고 말았습니다. 두 번 그렇게 실망한 후에 다른 자리가 생겨서 그리로 가게 되었습니다. 그 사역의 부르심으로 나는 13년 동안 감동적인 목회사역을 할 수 있었습니다.

사도행전 16장을 보면 하나님은 바울과 그 일행의 여정을 두 번이나 바꾸셨습니다. 처음에는 “성령이 아시아 에서 말씀을 전하지 못하게 하셨고” (6절), 그 다음에는 “그들이 무시아 앞에 이르러 비두니아로 가고자 애쓰되 예수의 영이 허락하지 아니하였습니다” (7절). 그들은 알지 못했지만 하나님은 그분의 일과 그 일을 하는 사람들에게 적합한 다른 계획을 갖고 계셨습니다. 하나님께서 그들의 이전 계획에 대해 ‘안 돼’라고 하셨을 때, 그들은 하나님의 음성을 듣고 확신 가운데 그분의 인도하심을 따르게 되었습니다(9-10절).

감당하기 힘든 손해를 당한다고 생각을 하면 누구나 처음에는 슬플 것입니다. 직장을 구하지 못했을 때, 섬길 기회가 주어지지 않았을 때, 그리고 이전하려는 계획이 무산되어 버렸을 때 우리는 마음의 상처를 받습니다. 그런 일들이 당시에는 심각해보일 수 있겠지만, 시간이 지나면 그렇게 돌아가는 것이 사실은 주님이 우리를 그분이 원하시는 곳으로 이끄시기 위해 사용하시는 하나님의 방향 전환이라는 것을 알게 되고, 우리는 그것에 감사하게 될 것입니다.

Divine Diversions

It can be difficult when we’re told “no” or “not now,” especially when we sense God has opened a door for us to serve others. Early in my ministry, two opportunities came my way where I thought my gifts and skills matched the churches’ needs, but both doors eventually closed. After these two disappointments, another position came along, and I was selected. With that ministry call came thirteen years of lifetouching pastoral labors.

Twice in Acts 16 Paul and company were redirected by God. First, they were “kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia” (V 6). Then, “When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to” (V 7). Unknown to them, God had other plans that would be right for His work and workers. His no to the previous plans put them in a position to listen to and be confidently led by Him (VV 9–10).

Who among us hasn’t grieved what we initially thought to be a painful loss? We’ve felt wounded when we didn’t get a certain job, when a service opportunity didn’t materialize, when a relocation got derailed. Though such things can momentarily be weighty, time often reveals that such detours are actually divine diversions that the Lord graciously uses to get us where He wants us, and we are grateful. - ARTHUR JACKSON

밧줄 풀기

용서가 치유의 근본임을 알리는 것을 주요 사역으로 하는 한 기독교 단체가 있습니다. 이 단체는 피해자가 가해자와 서로 등을 대고 밧줄로 꽁꽁 묶인 채 시작하는 촌극을 공연합니다. 그런데 오직 피해자만이 밧줄을 풀 수 있습니다. 피해자가 아무리 애를 써도 그의 등에는 한 사람이 계속 붙어있습니다. 피해자가 밧줄을 풀지 않고는, 즉 용서하지 않고는 빠져나올 수 없는 것입니다.

Untying the Rope

One Christian organization’s mission is to promote the healing nature of forgiveness. One of their activities involves a skit in which a person who has been wronged is strapped back to back with a rope to the wrongdoer. Only the one sinned against can untie the rope. No matter what she does, she’s got someone on her back. Without forgiveness—without untying the rope—she cannot escape.

Offering forgiveness to someone who comes to us in sorrow for their wrongdoing begins the process of releasing us and them from the bitterness and pain that can cling to us over wrongs we’ve suffered. In Genesis, we see two brothers separated for twenty years after Jacob stole Esau’s birthright. After this long time, God told Jacob to return to his homeland (GENESIS 31:3). He obeyed, but nervously, sending ahead to Esau gifts of herds of animals (32:13–15). When the brothers met, Jacob bowed at Esau’s feet seven times in humility (33:3). Imagine his surprise when Esau ran and embraced him, both of them weeping over their reconciliation (V 4). No longer was Jacob held by the sin he committed against his brother.

Do you feel imprisoned by unforgiveness, saddled with anger, fear, or shame? Know that God through His Son and Spirit can release you when you seek His help. He will enable you to begin the process of untying any ropes and setting you free. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

우리의 추도사

어느 신실한 여성의 장례식에 참석한 후 내 마음이 벅차올랐습니다. 그 여인의 삶은 특별하지 않았고 교회나 이웃, 친구들 외에는 그녀를 아는 사람이 거의 없었지만 그녀는 예수님과 자신의 일곱 자녀, 그리고 스물다섯 명의 손자 손녀들을 사랑했습니다. 그녀는 잘 웃었고, 친절히 섬겼으며, 소프트볼을 멀리 칠 수 있었습니다.

전도서는 말합니다. “초상집에 가는 것이 잔칫집에 가는 것보다 나으니”(7:2). 지혜자의 마음은 초상집에 있으되”(7:4). 인생에 무엇이 가장 중요한지를 그곳에서 배울 수 있기 때문입니다. 뉴욕 타임즈의 칼럼니스트 데이비드 브룩스는 두 종류의 덕목이 있다고 말합니다. 하나는 이력서를 돋보이게 하는 덕목이고, 다른 하나는 자신의 장례식에서 언급되기를 바라는 덕목입니다. 두 덕목이 가끔 겹치기도 하지만 서로 다르게 보일 때가 많습니다. 확신이 서지 않는다면, 언제나 추도사 쪽의 덕목을 선택하십시오.

Your Eulogy

My heart is full from attending the funeral of a faithful woman. Her life wasn’t spectacular. She wasn’t known widely outside her church, neighbors, and friends. But she loved Jesus, her seven children, and her twenty-five grandchildren. She laughed easily, served generously, and could hit a softball a long way.

Ecclesiastes says, “It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting” (7:2). “The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning” because there we learn what matters most (7:4). New York Times columnist David Brooks says there are two kinds of virtues: those that look good on a résumé and those you want said at your funeral. Sometimes these overlap, though often they seem to compete. When in doubt, always choose the eulogy virtues.

The woman in the casket didn’t have a résumé, but her children testified that “she rocked Proverbs 31” and its description of a godly woman. She inspired them to love Jesus and care for others. As Paul said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 CORINTHIANS 11:1), so they challenged us to imitate their mother’s life as she imitated Jesus.

What will be said at your funeral? What do you want said? It’s not too late to develop eulogy virtues. Rest in Jesus. His salvation frees us to live for what matters most. - MIKE WITTMER

불타는 허영

1497년 2월에 수도사 지롤라마 사보나롤라가 불을 지폈습니다. 그 전까지 그와 그를 따르는 무리가 사람들의 마음을 꾀어 죄를 짓게 하거나 종교적 의무를 게을리 하게 만든다고 생각되는 물품들, 이를테면 예술품이나 화장품, 악기, 의류 등을 수개월에 걸쳐 모았습니다. 그날에 허영의 물품 수천 점을 이탈리아 피렌체의 광장에 모아놓고 불을 붙였습니다. 바로 ‘허영의 소각’으로 알려진 사건입니다.

‘허영의 소각’이 소유물과 예술품들을 태워버리는 대단한 행사이긴 했어도, 그것으로 그 일에 관련된 사람들의 마음까지도 변화시키지는 못했을 것입니다. 마음을 변화시킬 수 있는 분은 오직 하나님뿐이십니다. 그래서 시편 기자도 “하나님이여 내 속에 정한 마음을 창조하소서”(시편 51:10)라고 기도한 것입니다. 중요한 것은 우리의 마음입니다.

Vanity on Fire

In February 1497, a Monk named Girolama Savonarola started a fire. Leading up to this, he and his followers spent several months collecting items that they thought might entice people to sin or neglect their religious duties—including artwork, cosmetics, instruments, and dresses. On the appointed day, thousands of vanity items were gathered at a public square in Florence, Italy, and set on fire. The event has come to be known as the Bonfire of the Vanities.

Savonarola might have found inspiration for his extreme actions in some shocking statements from the Sermon on the Mount. “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away,” said Jesus. “And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away” (MATTHEW 5:29–30). But if we interpret Jesus’s words literally, we miss the point of the message. The entire sermon is a lesson on going deeper than the surface, to focus on the state of our hearts rather than blaming our behavior on external distractions and temptations.

The Bonfire of the Vanities made a great show of destroying belongings and works of art, but it is unlikely that the hearts of those involved were changed in the process. Only God can change a heart. That’s why the psalmist prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God” (PSALM 51:10). It’s our heart that counts. - REMI OYEDELE

즐기며 시합하기

우리 아들 브라이언은 고등학교 농구팀 감독입니다. 어느 해 그의 팀이 워싱턴 주 농구대회에서 연승가도를 달릴 때 그 곳 사람들이 좋은 뜻으로 물었습니다. “올해 우승할 것 같습니까?” 선수와 코치들이 이 질문에 부담을 느끼자 브라이언이 한 가지 지침을 만들었습니다. “즐겁게 경기하자!”

Playing with Joy

One of our sons, Brian, is a high school basketball coach. One year, as his team was dribbling its way through the Washington State Basketball Tournament, well-meaning folks around town asked, “Are you going to win it all this year?” Both players and coaches felt the pressure, so Brian adopted a motto: “Play with joy!”

I thought of the apostle Paul’s last words to the elders of Ephesus: “That I may finish my race with joy” (ACTS 20:24 NKJV ). His aim was to complete the tasks Jesus had given him. I have made these words my motto and my prayer: “May I run and finish my race with joy.” Or as Brian says, “May I play with joy!” And by the way, Brian’s team did win the state championship that year.

We all have good reasons to get grouchy: discouraging news, everyday stresses, health problems. Nevertheless, God can give us a joy that transcends these conditions if we ask Him. We can have what Jesus called, “my joy” (JOHN 15:11).

Joy is a fruit of the Spirit of Jesus (GALATIANS 5:22). So we must remember each morning to ask Him to help us: “May I play with joy!” Author Richard Foster said, “To pray is to change. This is a great grace. How good of God to provide a path whereby our lives can be taken over by . . . joy.” - DAVID H. ROPER
