하나님을 위한 착실한 걸음걸이

영국 시골에서 윌리엄 캐리(1761-1834)와 함께 자란 사람들은 아마 그가 많은 일을 이루어낼 것이라고는 생각하지 못했을 것입니다. 그러나 오늘날 캐리는 현대 선교의 아버지로 알려져 있습니다. 방직공이었던 부모에게서 태어난 그는 별로 뛰어나지 못한 교사와 구두 수선공이 되었지만, 그 기간 동안 헬라어와 히브리어, 라틴어를 혼자 공부했습니다. 여러 해 후, 인도 선교사가 되겠다는 자신의 꿈이 이루어졌습니다. 하지만 아이의 죽음과 아내의 정신건강 문제, 수년간 그가 섬겼던 사람들로부터 시큰둥한 반응 등, 여러 가지 어려운 일들에 직면했습니다.

그러나 무엇이 그로 하여금 어려움 속에서도 성경 전체를 6개 언어로 번역하고 다른 29개 언어로 부분 번역을 하는 사역을 계속 하게 하였을까요? 그는 말했습니다. “저는 착실한 걸음걸이로 천천히 걸어갈 수 있습니다. 어떤 분명한 목표를 위해서라면 견딜 수 있습니다.” 그는 어떤 시련에도 아랑곳 않고 하나님을 섬기는 일에 헌신하였습니다.

이와 같은 그리스도를 향한 지속적인 헌신은 히브리서 저자가 했던 조언이기도 합니다. 히브리서는 하나님을 섬길 때 “게으르지 아니하고”(히브리서 6:12), “같은 열성을 끝까지 나타내라”(11절, 새번역) 고 당부합니다. 또 하나님은 “계속 도우면서 보여준 여러분의 행위와 사랑을 결코 잊지 않으실”(10절, 현대인의 성경) 것이라고 말하면서 독자들을 안심시켜 주었습니다.

캐리는 생애 말년에 하나님께서 어떻게 한결같이 자신의 요구를 들어주셨는지 돌아보았습니다. “하나님은 결코 그분의 약속을 저버리지 않으셨습니다. 그래서 나도 그분을 섬기는 일을 멈출 수 없습니다.” 하나님께서 우리에게도 날마다 그분을 섬길 수 있도록 능력 부어주시기를 기도드립니다.

Plodding for God

Those raised in the English village with William Carey (1761–1834) probably thought he wouldn’t accomplish much, but today he’s known as the father of modern missions. Born to parents who were weavers, he became a nottoo successful teacher and cobbler while teaching himself Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. After many years, he realized his dream of becoming a missionary to India. But he faced hardship, including his child’s death, his wife’s mentalhealth problems, and for many years the lack of response from those he served.

What kept him serving amid difficulties as he translated the entire Bible into six languages and parts of it into twentynine others? “I can plod,” he said. “I can persevere in any definite pursuit.” He committed to serving God no matter what trials he encountered.

This continued devotion to Christ is what the writer to the Hebrews counseled. He called for those reading his letter to not “become lazy” (HEBREWS 6:12), but to “show this same diligence to the very end” (V 11) as they sought to honor God. He reassured them that God “will not forget your work and the love you have shown” (V 10).

During William Carey’s later years, he reflected on how God consistently supplied his needs. “He has never failed in His promise, so I cannot fail in my service to Him.” May God also empower us to serve Him day by day. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

직장 교육

브라질의 한 회사 관리인이 회사 건물 청소직원들에게 서면으로 보고해줄 것을 요청했습니다. 이 여성 관리인은 매일 누가 어느 사무실을 청소하고, 어느 사무실이 청소가 되지 않은 채 그대로 있으며, 청소직원들이 각 사무실에서 얼마나 시간을 소요하는지 알고 싶었던 것입니다. 첫 “일일” 보고서가 부분적으로 작성된 채 일주일 후에 도착했습니다.

관리인이 이유를 캐어보니 청소직원 대부분이 글을 읽지 못한다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그녀는 그들을 모두 해고할 수도 있었지만, 그 대신 그들에게 문맹교육을 받게 해주었습니다. 5개월이 되지 않아 모두 기초수준의 글을 읽을 수 있었고 계속해서 청소 작업을 할 수 있었습니다.

하나님은 종종 우리의 시련을 기회로 사용하셔서 우리가 계속해서 그분을 위해서 일할 수 있도록 준비해주십니다. 베드로의 인생은 미숙함과 실수로 얼룩져 있었습니다. 그는 물위를 걸어가려 할 때 믿음이 흔들렸고, 예수님이 성전세를 내야 하는지도 확실히 몰랐습니다(마태복음 17:24-27). 심지어 예수님의 십자가 죽음과 부활에 대한 예언도 받아들이지 않았습니다(16:21-23). 그런 문제에 부딪칠 때마다 예수님은 베드로에게 예수님 자신이 누구신지, 즉 주님이 약속된 메시아라는 것에 대해 더 많은 것을 가르쳐주셨습니다(16절). 베드로는 열심히 듣고 배워서 초대 교회를 세우는데 도움이 되려면 무엇을 알아야 하는지를 알게 되었습니다(18절).

오늘 당신이 어떤 실패로 낙담했다면, 예수님은 그 실패를 이용하여 당신을 가르치시고 당신이 그분을 섬기는 일로 나아갈 수 있도록 이끌어주신다는 것을 기억하십시오. 결점이 많은 베드로와 함께 계속 일하셨던 주님께서는 이제 우리를 사용하셔서 주님이 다시 오실 때까지 계속해서 주님의 나라를 건설해 가실 것입니다.

In-Service Training

A manager at a company in Brazil requested a written report from the custodians in her building. Each day she wanted to know who cleaned each room, which rooms were left untouched, and how much time employees spent in each room. The first “daily” report arrived a week later, partially completed.

When the manager looked into the matter, she discovered most of the cleaning employees couldn’t read. She could have fired them, but instead she arranged for them to have literacy lessons. Within five months, everyone was reading at a basic level and continued in their jobs.

God often uses our struggles as opportunities to equip us to continue working for Him. Peter’s life was marked by inexperience and mistakes. His faith faltered as he tried to walk on water. He wasn’t sure if Jesus should pay the temple tax (MATTHEW 17:24–27). He even rejected Christ’s prophecy about the crucifixion and resurrection (16:21–23). Through each issue Jesus taught Peter more about who He was—the promised Messiah (V 16). Peter listened and learned what he needed to know to help found the early church (V 18).

If you’re discouraged by some failure today, remember that Jesus may use it to teach you and lead you forward in your service for Him. He continued to work with Peter despite his shortcomings, and He can use us to continue to build His kingdom until He returns. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

온전하게 만들기

다큐멘터리 ‘와서 보라: 웬델 베리의 초상화’에서 작가 베리는 이 세상의 상황을 ‘분리’라는 말로 어떻게 설명할 수 있는지 이야기하고 있습니다. 우리는 서로서로로부터, 역사로부터, 땅으로부터 분리되어 있습니다. 온전해야 하는 것들이 나뉘어져 있습니다. 이 슬픈 사실에 우리가 어떻게 해야 할지 질문을 받은 베리는 “우리는 ‘모든 것을’ 다시 제 자리에 갖다 놓을 수는 없습니다. 다만 ‘두 개’를 가져다가 붙일 수 있을 뿐입니다.”라고 말합니다. 갈라진 두 개를 가지고 다시 하나가 되게 하는 것입니다.

“화평하게 하는 자는 복이 있나니” (마태복음 5:9)라고 예수님이 말씀하십니다. 화평하게 하는 것은 ‘샬롬’을 가져오는 것입니다. 샬롬은 이 세상이 올바로 서게 되는 것을 말합니다. 어떤 신학자는 샬롬을 “두루두루 번성하는 것, 온전함, 기쁨...... 원래대로 되어 있어야 하는 상태”라고 설명합니다. 샬롬은 갈라진 것을 가지고 온전한 상태로 만드는 것입니다. 예수님이 안내하시는 대로 우리도 모든 것을 바로 세우는 일에 힘쓸 수 있기를 소망합니다. 주님은 우리가 화평하게 하는 자가 되고, “세상의 소금”과 “세상의 빛”이 되라고 요구하고 계십니다(13-14절).

이 세상에는 화평하게 하는 자가 되는 여러 가지 방법이 있습니다. 우리가 어떤 방법을 쓰건 매번 갈라진 상태에 굴복하지 않고 갈라진 둘을 하나로 합하는 일을 할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 하나님의 능력을 힘입어 우호관계가 끊어지거나, 힘들어하는 이웃이 약해지거나 관심을 받지 못하고 고립되는 일이 없도록 합시다. 우리 모두 다시 온전케 하는 일에 참여할 수 있는 지혜와 능력을 주시는 하나님을 신뢰하면서 갈라진 것들을 찾아봅시다.

Making Things Whole

In the documentary Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry, author Berry spoke of how divorce describes the state of our world. We’re divorced from one another, from our history, from the land. Things that should be whole are split apart. When asked what we should do about this sad fact, Berry said, “We can’t put everything back together. We just take two things and put them together.” We take two things broken apart and make them one again.

“Blessed are the peacemakers,” Jesus tells us (MATTHEW 5:9). To make peace is to bring shalom . And shalom refers to the world being set right. One theologian describes shalom as “universal flourishing, wholeness and delight. . . . [It’s] the way things ought to be.” Shalom is taking what’s broken and making it whole. As Jesus guides, may we strive to make things right. He calls us to be peacemakers, to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” (VV 13–14)

There are many ways to be peacemakers in the world, but with each may we engage brokenness rather than surrendering to it. In God’s power, let’s choose to not allow a friendship to die or let a struggling neighborhood languish or yield to apathy and isolation. Let’s look for the broken places, trusting God to give us the wisdom and skill to participate in making them whole again. - WINN COLLIER

겨우 한 순간

바비의 갑작스런 죽음으로 나는 죽음이라는 엄연한 현실과 인생의 덧없음을 절실히 깨닫게 되었습니다. 나의 어릴 적 친구 바비가 빙판 도로 위의 비극적인 사고로 목숨을 잃었을때 그녀의 나이는 겨우 24살이었습니다. 결손 가정에서 자랐지만, 그는 얼마 전까지만 해도 전도가 유망한 듯이 보였습니다. 이제 막 예수님을 믿기 시작한 젊은 여자가 어떻게 그렇게 일찍 인생을 끝낼 수 있단 말인가요?

때때로 인생은 너무나 짧고 슬픔으로 가득 차 있는 것처럼 보입니다. 시편 39 편에서 저자 다윗은 자신의 고통을 한탄하며 이렇게 외칩니다. “여호와여 나의 종말과 연한이 언제까지인지 알게 하사 내가 나의 연약함을 알게 하소서 주께서 나의 날을 한 뼘 길이만큼 되게 하시매 나의 일생이 주 앞에는 없는 것 같사오니 사람은 그가 든든히 서 있는 때에도 진실로 모두가 허사 뿐이니이다”(4-5절). 인생은 ‘정말’ 짧습니다. 우리가 백 년을 바라보고 산다고 하지만, 이 땅에서의 삶은 영원에 비하면 한 순간에 지나지 않습니다.

그렇다 하더라도 다윗처럼 우리도 “나의 소망은 주께 있나이다”(7절)라고 말할 수 있습니다. 우리는 우리의 삶에 ‘분명’ 의미가 있다고 믿습니다. 우리의 육신은 쇠하여 가지만, 믿는 자들인 우리에게는 “우리의 속사람이 날로 새로워지며” 언젠가 그분과 함께 영생을 누릴 거라는 확신이 있습니다(고린도후서 4:16-5:1). 우리가 이것을 아는 것은 하나님이 “이런 일을 우리에게 이루어주시고, 그 보증으로 우리에게 성령을 주셨기”(5:5, 새번역) 때문입니다!

But a Breath

Bobby’s sudden death brought home to me the stark reality of death and the brevity of life. My childhood friend was only twentyfour when a tragic accident on an icy road claimed her life. Growing up in a dysfunctional family, she had recently seemed to be moving forward. Just a new believer in Jesus, how could her life end so soon?

Sometimes life seems far too short and full of sorrow. In Psalm 39 the psalmist David bemoans his own suffering and exclaims: “Show me, Lord , my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure” (VV 4–5). Life is short. Even if we live to see a century, our earthly life is but a drop in all of time.

And yet, with David, we can say, “My hope is in [the Lord]” (V 7). We can trust that our lives do have meaning. Though our bodies waste away, as believers we have confidence that “inwardly we are being renewed day by day”—and one day we’ll enjoy eternal life with Him (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16–5:1). We know this because God “has given us the Spirit . . . guaranteeing what is to come”! (5:5). - ALYSON KIEDA

자랑해야 할 그 무엇

진짜가 된다는 것이 무슨 의미일까요? 굉장히 큰 질문인데, 작은 어린이 책 ‘면비로드 토끼’에 그 해답이 들어있습니다. 이 책은 아기 방에 있는 장난감들에 관한 이야기인데, 면비로드로 된 토끼가 한 아이에게 사랑을 받아 진짜 토끼가 되는 여정을 보여주고 있습니다. 그리고 나이가 많고 지혜로운 스킨 호스 장난감도 등장합니다. 이 장난감 말은 “수많은 기계 장난감들이 잇달아 여기 와서 자랑하고 으스대다가 점점 고장이 나고......그리고는 사라져버리는 것을 지켜보았습니다.” 그 장난감들은 모양과 소리에 있어서 아주 굉장했지만, 그들의 자랑은 인간의 사랑을 만나지 못했을 때 결국 아무런 가치도 없는 것이 되고 말았습니다.

자랑은 처음은 강하게 시작해도 결국에는 언제나 쇠하여 사라져버립니다. 예레미야는 이 자랑이 분명하게 드러나는 부분을 세 가지를 듭니다. “지혜......힘...... 부요함”(예레미야 9:23, 현대인의 성경)입니다. 세상 물정을 한두 가지 알 만큼 오래 살아온 이 나이든 지혜로운 선지자는 그런 자랑에 대하여 주님의 진리의 말씀으로 맞섰습니다. “자랑하는 자는 이것으로 자랑할지니 나를 아는 것과 나는 여호와인줄 깨닫는 것이라”(24절).

하나님의 자녀들인 우리는 모두 좋으신 아버지이신 하나님을 자랑합시다. 그분의 위대하신 사랑이 펼쳐지는 이야기 속에 여러분과 내가 점점 더 진짜 인간이 되어가는 놀라운 길이 있습니다.

Something to Brag About

What does it mean to be real? That’s the very big question answered in the small children’s book The Velveteen Rabbit. It’s the story of toys in a nursery and the velveteen rabbit’s journey to become real by allowing himself to be loved by a child. One of the other toys is the old and wise Skin Horse. He “had seen a long succession of mechanical toys arrive to boast and swagger, and by and by break . . . and pass away.” They looked and sounded impressive, but their bragging eventually amounted to nothing when it came to love.

Boasting starts out strong; but in the end, it always fades away. Jeremiah lists three areas where this is evident: “wisdom. . . strength . . . riches” (JEREMIAH 9:23).
The wise old prophet had been around long enough to know a thing or two, and he countered such boasting with the Lord’s truth: “But let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord ” (V 24).

Let us, the children, brag about God, our good Father. In the unfolding story of His great love, it’s the wonderful way you and I grow to become more and more real. - JOHN BLASE

내 머리 뒤에 달린 눈

어릴 적에 나는 다른 아이들처럼 말썽을 많이 피웠습니다. 그러고는 혼나지 않으려고 잘못한 일을 감추려 했지만, 어머니는 내가 저지른 일들을 잘 찾아내셨습니다. 내가 저지른 엉뚱한 짓들을 어떻게 그렇게 빨리 그리고 정확하게 알고 계셨는지 돌이켜 보면 놀라지 않을 수 없습니다. 너무 신기해서 어떻게 알아냈는지 물어보면 어머니는 언제나 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “내 머리 뒤에는 눈이 달려 있단다.” 이 말을 듣고 당연하게도 나는 어머니가 뒤로 돌아설
때마다 어머니 머리를 유심히 보았습니다. 그 눈이 보이지 않는 것인지 아니면 붉은 머리카락 속에 덮여 숨겨있는 것인지 말입니다. 커가면서 어머니에게 눈이 두 개 더 있는지 확인하는 일을 그만두었고, 나 자신이 생각한 만큼 악동도 아니었다는 사실도 알게 되었습니다. 어머니가 나를 지켜본 눈빛은 자식에 대한 사랑과 관심을 증명해보인 것뿐이었습니다.

지금 나는 어머니의 세심한 보살핌에 감사해 하고 있습니다 (가끔은 혼날 일들을 모면하지 못해 실망도 했지만!). 어렸을 때 어머니의 보살핌에 대한 감사보다 더욱 감사한 일은 하나님께서 하늘에서 우리를 굽어보시며 “모든 인생을 살피신다”(시편 33:13) 는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 것을 보고 계십니다. 우리의 슬픔과 기쁨, 서로를 향한 사랑까지 보고 계시니까요.

하나님은 우리의 참 성품을 보고 계시기 때문에 우리에게 무엇이 필요한지 언제나 정확히 아십니다. 하나님은 우리 내면의 움직임까지 볼 수 있는 완벽한 시력으로 그분을 사랑하고 그분께 소망을 두는 사람들을 지켜보십니다(18절). 하나님은 자상하시고 사랑이 많으신 우리 아버지이십니다.

Eyes in the Back of My Head

I was as mischievous as any other child in my early years and tried to hide my bad behavior to avoid getting into trouble. Yet my mother usually found out what I had done. I recall being amazed at how quickly and accurately she knew about my antics. When I marveled and asked how she knew, she always replied, “I have eyes in the back of my head.” This, of course, led me to study her head whenever she’d turn her back—were the eyes invisible or merely cloaked by her red hair? As I grew, I gave up looking for evidence of her extra pair of eyes and realized I just wasn’t quite as sneaky as I had supposed. Her watchful gaze was evidence of her loving concern for her children.

As grateful as I am for my mother’s attentive care (despite being occasionally disappointed I hadn’t gotten away with something!), I’m even more grateful that God “sees all mankind” as He looks upon us from heaven (PSALM 33:13). He sees so much more than what we do; He sees our sadness, our delights, and our love for one another.

God sees our true character and always knows exactly what we need. With perfect vision, which even sees the inner workings of our hearts, He watches over those who love Him and put their hope in Him (V 18). He’s our attentive, loving Father. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

감금 중에 지킨 믿음

1948년 어느 이른 아침 초인종이 울렸을 때 하랄란 포포프는 자신의 인생이 어떤 전기를 맞을지 전혀 몰랐습니다. 아무런 예고도 없이 불가리아 경찰이 신앙을 이유로 그를 감옥으로 끌고 간 것입니다. 그는 기도로 힘과 용기를 구하며 철창에 갇혀 13년을 보냈습니다. 처참한 대우를 받으면서도 포포프는 하나님이 자기와 함께 하신다는 것을 알았고, 다른 죄수들에게 예수님의 복음을 전하여 많은 사람들이 믿게 되었습니다.

창세기 37장을 보면, 화가 난 형들이 요셉을 무자비하게 상인들에게 팔고 그 상인들이 요셉을 애굽으로 데려가 또다시 애굽 관리 보디발에게 팔았을 때, 요셉도 앞으로 자신에게 어떤 일이 일어날지 전혀 몰랐습니다. 이제 요셉은 수많은 신을 믿는 사람들이 사는 문화권에 던져졌습니다. 엎친 데 덮친 격으로 보디발의 아내가 요셉을 유혹하려 했습니다. 요셉이 이를 여러 차례 거절하자 그녀는 그에게 누명을 씌워 감옥에 보냈습니다(39:16-20). 그러나 하나님은 요셉을 버리지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 요셉과 함께 하셨을 뿐 아니라, “그의 범사에 형통하게 하셨으며” “그에게 인자를 더하시고” 권력자들에게 “은혜를 받게”까지 하셨습니다(39:3,21).

요셉이 느꼈을 두려움을 한 번 상상해보십시오. 그럼에도요셉은 변함없이 신실했고 자신의 도덕적 원칙을 지켜나갔습니다. 하나님은 요셉의 힘든 여정 속에서도 그와 함께 하셨고 그를 위한 종합기본계획도 갖고 계셨습니다. 하나님은 당신을 위한 계획도 마음에 두고 계십니다. 하나님께서 보고 알고 계신다는 사실을 믿고 힘내어 믿음의 길을 걸어가십시오.

Faithful in Captivity

Haralan Popov had no idea what turn his life would take when the doorbell rang early one morning in 1948. Without any warning, the Bulgarian police took Haralan away to prison because of his faith. He spent the next thirteen years behind bars, praying for strength and courage. Despite horrible treatment, he knew God was with him, and he shared the good news of Jesus with fellow prisoners—and many believed.

In the account from Genesis 37, Joseph had no idea what would happen to him after he was mercilessly sold by his angry brothers to merchants who took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, an Egyptian official. He found himself in a culture surrounded by people who believed in thousands of gods. To make things worse, Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph. When Joseph refused repeatedly, she falsely accused him, leading to his being sent to prison (39:16–20). Yet God did not abandon him. Not only was He with Joseph, but He also “gave him success in everything he did” and even “showed him kindness and granted him favor” with those in authority (39:3, 21).

Imagine the fear Joseph must have felt. But he remained faithful and kept his integrity. God was with Joseph in his difficult journey and had a master plan for him. He has a plan in mind for you too. Take heart and walk in faith, trusting He sees and He knows. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

주님은 결코 늦지 않으신다

장모님께 심장마비가 와서 불안했지만 다행히 즉시 치료를 받을 수 있었습니다. 나중에 담당의사는 심장마비가 왔을때 15분 이내에 치료를 받으면 중환자의 경우 생존율이 33퍼센트지만 그 시간을 넘기면 5퍼센트 밖에 되지 않는다고 말했습니다.

예수님이 중병에 걸린 야이로의 딸 (분명 응급치료가 필요한 사람)을 고치러 가던 중 상상도 못할 행동을 하셨습니다. 가시던 길을 잠시 멈추어 서신 것입니다 (마가복음 5:30). 주님은 멈추어 자기에게 손 댄 사람이 누구인지를 아시고는 그 여인에게 다정하게 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 야이로가 이 때 무슨 생각을 하고 있었을지 그려볼 수 있습니다. ‘내 딸이 죽어가고 있는데 이럴 시간이 어디 있어!’ 그때 야이로에게 최악의 두려움이 현실이 되었습니다. 예수님이 너무 오래 지체하시는 바람에 야이로의 딸이 그만 죽어버린 것입니다(35절).

그러나 예수님은 야이로를 보시고 격려의 말씀을 하셨습니다. “두려워하지 말고 믿기만 하라”(36절). 그러신 다음 예수님은 구경꾼들의 야유를 태연하게 무시하시면서 야이로의 딸에게 말을 걸었습니다. 그러자 딸이 다시 살아났습니다! 주님은 자신이 결코 늦지 않는다는 사실을 보여주신 것입니다. 주님은 그분이 하실 수 있는 일을 하시려고 할 때 시간에 제약 받지 않으십니다.

우리도 야이로처럼 하나님께서 너무 늦어서 우리가 바라는 일을 이루지 못하시는 것이 아닌가 조바심할 때가 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다. 하지만 하나님께 그런 일은 절대로 없습니다. 하나님은 우리의 삶속에서 그분의 선하시고 자비로운 일을 이루시는데 결코 늦지 않으십니다.

Never Too Late

During the anxious moments that followed my motherinlaw’s heart attack, she was fortunate to receive immediate medical care. Later, her doctor told me that treatment within fifteen minutes of a heart attack results in a survival rate of 33 percent for critical patients. But just 5 percent survive if treated beyond that time frame.

On the way to heal Jairus’s desperately ill daughter (someone definitely needing immediate medical care), Jesus did the unthinkable: He paused (MARK 5:30). He stopped to identify who touched Him, and then spoke gently with the woman. You can imagine what Jairus was thinking: There’s no time for this, my daughter is dying! And then, his worst fears came true—Jesus appeared to have delayed too long and his daughter passed away (V 35).

But Jesus turned to Jairus and offered a word of encouragement: “Don’t be afraid; just believe” (V 36). Then, calmly ignoring the mockery of onlookers, Christ spoke to Jairus’s daughter and she came back to life! He revealed that He can never be too late. Time can’t limit what He’s able to do and when He chooses to do it.

How often do we feel like Jairus, thinking that God was simply too late to accomplish what we had hoped for. But with God, there’s no such thing. He’s never too late in fulfilling His good and merciful work in our lives. - PETER CHIN

개인지도 학습

여섯 살 난 아들 오웬이 새 보드게임을 받고 매우 신이 났습니다. 그런데 반시간 동안이나 게임 규칙을 읽고 나더니 실망스러워했습니다. 게임을 어떻게 하는 건지 전혀 이해할 수 없었던 것입니다. 나중에 게임하는 법을 이미 알고 있는 친구가 찾아와서야 아들은 비로소 그가 받은 선물을 즐길 수 있었습니다.

아이들이 노는 것을 지켜보면서 뭐든지 새로운 것을 배울 때 경험 많은 선생이 있다면 훨씬 더 쉬울 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 무언가를 배울 때 설명서가 도움이 되기는 하지만, 실제로 사용법을 보여줄 수 있는 친구가 있는 것과는 아주 큰 차이가 있습니다.

바울 사도 역시 이것을 알고 있었습니다. 디도에게 보낸 편지에서 바울은 교회가 믿음 안에서 성장하려면 신앙의 모범이 될 수 있는 경험 많은 성도들이 얼마나 소중한가를 강조하고 있습니다. 물론 “건전한 교리”를 가르치는 것이 중요하지만, 그것은 말로 가르치는 것이 아니라 삶으로 보여줘야 하는 것입니다. 그래서 바울은 나이든 사람들은 자제할 줄 알고 친절해야 하며 사랑하는 마음을 가져야 한다고 말합니다 (디도서 2:2-5). 이어서 “범사에 네 자신이 선한 일의 본을 보이라”(7절)고 했습니다.

나는 제대로 된 가르침을 받은 것에 감사합니다. 그러나 또한 개인지도 선생님이 되어준 많은 분들에게도 감사한 마음을 갖고 있습니다. 그들은 그리스도의 제자가 되는 것이 어떤 것인지 자신들의 삶을 통해 보여주었고, 나 또한 그 길을 걸어갈때 어떻게 해야 하는지 더 쉽게 알 수 있었습니다.

Hands-On Learning

My six-year-old son, Owen, was thrilled to receive a new board game. But after a half hour reading the rules, he was frustrated. He couldn’t quite figure out how it worked. It wasn’t until later, when a friend came over who already knew how to play, that Owen finally got to enjoy his present.

Watching them play, I was reminded of how much easier it is to learn something new if you have an experienced teacher. When we’re learning, reading the instructions helps, but having a friend who can demonstrate makes a huge difference.

The apostle Paul understood this too. Writing to Titus about how he could help his church grow in faith, Paul emphasized the value of experienced believers who could model Christian faith. Of course teaching “sound doctrine” was important, but it didn’t just need to be talked about—it needed to be lived out. Paul wrote that older men and women ought to be selfcontrolled, kind, and loving (TITUS 2:2–5). “In everything,” he said, “set them an example by doing what is good” (V 7).

I’m thankful for solid teaching, but I’m also thankful for the many people who have been handson teachers. They’ve shown me by their lives what it looks like to be a disciple of Christ and have made it easier for me to see how I can walk that path too. - AMY PETERSON

누구지?

남편과 함께 신혼여행에서 집으로 돌아올 때, 공항에서 짐을 부치려고 기다리고 있었습니다. 나는 남편을 팔꿈치로 쿡 찌르면서 조금 떨어져 있는 한 남자를 가리켰습니다.

남편이 곁눈질을 하더니 “누구지?”라고 물었습니다.

나는 들뜬 마음으로 남편에게 그 배우가 맡았던 잘 알려진 배역들을 대충 얘기해준 다음, 그쪽으로 걸어가서 우리 부부와 같이 사진을 찍자고 했습니다. 24년이 지났지만, 나는 아직도 영화배우를 만났던 그날의 이야기를 즐겨 꺼내곤 합니다.

유명한 영화배우를 알아본 일과는 별개로, 내게는 개인적으로 알고 있는 것을 감사하게 여기는 더 소중한 분이 있습니다. “영광의 왕이 누구시냐”(시편 24:8). 바로 시편 기자 다윗이 가리키고 있는 만물의 창조주이시고 관리자이자
통치자이신 전능하신 하나님이십니다. 다윗은 노래합니다. “땅과 거기에 충만한 것과 세계와 그 가운데에 사는 자들은 다 여호와의 것이로다 여호와께서 그 터를 바다 위에 세우심이여 강들 위에 건설하셨도다”(1-2절). 말할 수 없는 경외감에 싸여 다윗은 만물 위에 뛰어나면서도 친근하게 다가갈 수 있는 하나님을 노래한 것입니다(3-4절). 하나님을 위해 살아갈 때 우리는 그분을 알 수 있고, 그분으로 인해 능력을 힘입을 수 있으며, 우리를 대신해서 싸우시는 그분을 믿고 맡길 수 있습니다(8절).

하나님은 그분만이 다른 사람들에게 전할 가치가 있는, 단 하나 뿐인 유명한 존재라는 것을 알릴 기회를 우리에게 주셨습니다. 하나님의 특성을 생각해볼 때, 하나님을 알지 못하는 사람들은 “누구지?”라고 물을 많은 이유가 있을 수 있습니다. 우리도 다윗처럼 말할 수 없는 경외감에 싸여 주님을 가리키며 그분의 이야기를 해줄 수 있습니다!

Who Is He?

On our way home from our honeymoon, my husband and I waited to check in our luggage at the airport. I nudged him and pointed to a man standing a few feet away.

My spouse squinted. “Who is he?”

I excitedly rattled off the actor’s most notable roles, then walked up and asked him to take a photo with us. Twentyfour years later, I still enjoy sharing the story of the day I met a movie star.

Recognizing a famous actor is one thing, but there’s Someone more important I’m thankful to know personally. “Who is this King of glory?” (PSALM 24:8). The psalmist David points to the Lord Almighty as Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all. He sings, “The earth is the Lord’ s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters” (VV 1–2). In awestruck wonder, David proclaims God is above all, yet intimately approachable (VV 3–4). We can know Him, be empowered by Him, and trust Him to fight on our behalf, as we live for Him (V 8).

God provides opportunities for us to declare Him as the only Famous One truly worth sharing with others. As we reflect His character, those who don’t recognize Him can have more reasons to ask, “Who is He?” Like David, we can point to the Lord with awestruck wonder and tell His story! - XOCHITL DIXON
