뒤로 걸어가기

나는 우연한 기회에 영국의 어느 뉴스제작팀이 만든 영상을 볼 수 있었는데, 1932년 여섯 살 난 플레너리 오코너가 자기 집 농장에서 한 일을 찍은 필름이었습니다. 훗날 미국의 작가로 호평을 받게 된 플레너리가 그 뉴스 팀의 호기심을 끈 것은 그가 닭 한 마리를 훈련시켜 뒤로 걷게 했기 때문입니다. 그 희한한 재주를 떠나서, 그 여류작가의 역사 속의 한 모습이야말로 하나의 완벽한 은유라고 생각했습니다. 과연 플레너리는 자신의 문학적인 감성과 영적인 확신을 바탕으로 기존 문화적 가치에 맞서서 사고하고 글을 썼다는 점에서 39년 생애를 확실히 뒷걸음질하며 보냈습니다. 출판사와 독자 모두 이 작가가 다룬 성경적 주제들이 일반적으로 예상되는 종교적인 관점에 역행하여 전개되었기 때문에 완전히 의표를 찔렸던 것입니다.

사실 진정으로 예수님을 닮으려는 사람들은 어쩔 수 없이 규범에 역행하여 살게 됩니다. 빌립보서는 예수님은 “근본”이 하나님이셨지만 우리가 예상하는 식으로 행동하지 않으셨다고 말합니다(2:6). 주님은 그분의 능력을 “자신의 유익을 위해” 사용하지 않으시고 “오히려 자기를 비워 종의 형체를 가지셨습니다”(6-7절). 창조주이신 그리스도께서는 사랑을 위해 죽음에 굴복하셨습니다. 주님은 고귀함을 붙들지 않고 겸손을 취하셨으며, 권력을 붙잡지 않고 지배하려는 마음을 내려놓으셨습니다. 예수님은 근본적으로 세상의 권력지향적인 방식에 역행해서 뒤로 걸어가신 것입니다.

성경은 우리도 그렇게 하라고 말합니다(5절). 예수님처럼 우리도 지배하려 하지 말고 섬겨야 합니다. 우뚝 서려 하지 말고 낮아지는 데로 가야하며, 가지려 하지 말고 주어야 합니다. 예수님의 권능 안에서 우리는 뒤로 걸어가야 합니다.

Walking Backward

I stumbled upon footage from a British newsreel crew who filmed six-year-old Flannery O’Connor on her family farm in 1932. Flannery, who would go on to become an acclaimed US writer, caught the crew’s curiosity because she’d taught a chicken to walk backward. Apart from the novelty of the feat, I thought this glimpse of history was a perfect metaphor. Flannery, due to both her literary sensibilities and her spiritual convictions, spent her thirty-nine years definitely walking backward—thinking and writing in a counter-cultural way. Publishers and readers were entirely baffled by how her biblical themes ran counter to the religious views they expected.

A life that runs counter to the norm is inevitable for those who would truly imitate Jesus. Philippians tells us that Jesus, though His “very nature” was God, didn’t move in the predictable ways we would expect (2:6). He didn’t use His power “to his own advantage,” but “rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (VV. 6–7). Christ, the Lord of creation, surrendered to death for the sake of love. He didn’t seize prestige but embraced humility. He didn’t grab power but relinquished control. Jesus, in essence, walked backward—counter to the power-driven ways of the world.

Scripture tells us to do the same (V. 5). Like Jesus, we serve rather than dominate. We move toward humility rather than prominence. We give rather than take. In Jesus’s power, we walk backward. - WINN COLLIER

그럼요

긴 하루를 보낸 셜리는 안락의자에 자리를 잡고 창밖을 내다보다가, 나이 많은 부부가 마당에 놓여있는 “무료” 라는 표지가 붙어 있는 다 낡아서 버려진 울타리 한 부분을 낑낑대며 옮기고 있는 모습을 보았습니다. 셜리는 남편을 불러 그들을 도와주려 서둘러 밖으로 나갔습니다. 넷이서 온 힘을 다해 그 울타리를 작은 손수레에 싣고 바깥 도로까지 밀고 나가 그 노부부의 집 모퉁이로 옮겨놓았습니다. 모두가 자신들의 모습을 보며 내내 웃었습니다. 다른 울타리를 가지러 돌아설 때 부인이 셜리에게 “내 친구가 되어주실래요?”라고 물었습니다. 셜리는 “예, 그럼요.” 하고 대답했습니다. 셜리는 나중에 그 새로 사귄 베트남 친구가 영어를 거의 못하며, 장성한 자녀들은 몇 시간 떨어진 곳으로 이사를 가서 외롭게 지내고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

레위기를 보면 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성들에게 이방인의 삶이 어떤 것인지 알 테니(19:34), 다른 이방인들을 어떻게 대해야 하는지(9-18절) 상기시켜주셨습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들을 하나님의 택한 민족으로 따로 구분해 놓으시고, 그 보답으로 그들이 “이웃 이방인들을” 자기 몸같이 사랑하고 축복하게 하셨습니다. 모든 민족에게 하나님의 가장 큰 축복이신 예수님은 후에 하나님 아버지의 그 말씀을 다시 꺼내어 우리 모두에게 말씀하셨습니다. “너의 주 하나님을 사랑하라...... 네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라” (마태복음 22:37-39).

하나님께서 우리를 먼저 사랑하셨기에 우리 안에 사시는 그리스도의 영을 힘입어 우리도 하나님과 다른 사람들을 사랑할 수 있습니다(갈라디아서 5:22-23; 요한1서 4:19). 우리도 셜리처럼 “예, 그럼요.”라고 말할 수 있겠습니까?

I Will

Shirley settled into her recliner after a long day. She looked out the window and noticed an older couple strug- gling to move a section of old fence left in a yard and labeled “free.” Shirley grabbed her husband, and they headed out the door to help. The four of them wrestled the fence onto a dolly and pushed it up the city street and around the corner to the couple’s home laughing all the way at the spectacle they must be. As they returned to get a second section of fence, the woman asked Shirley, “You be my friend?” “Yes, I will,” she replied. Shirley later learned that her new Vietnamese friend knew little English and was lonely because her grown children had moved hours away.

In Leviticus, God reminded the Israelites that they knew how it felt to be strangers (19:34) and how to treat others (VV. 9–18). God had set them apart to be His own nation, and in return they were to bless their “neighbors” by loving them as themselves. Jesus, the greatest blessing from God to the nations, later restated His Father’s words and extended them to us all: “Love the Lord your God . . . . Love your neighbor as yourself” (MATTHEW 22:37–39).

Through Christ’s Spirit living in us, we can love God and others because He loved us first (GALATIANS 5:22–23; 1 JOHN 4:19). Can we say with Shirley, “Yes, I will”? - ANNE CETAS

마지막 단어

그녀 이름은 새럴린이었습니다. 같이 학교 다닐 때 나는 그를 짝사랑했습니다. 웃는 모습이 정말 매력적이었습니다. 내가 자기를 짝사랑한다는 걸 알고 있었는지는 잘 모르겠지만, 아마 알았으리라고 생각합니다. 졸업 후에는 새럴린의 소식을 알지 못했습니다. 삶이 흔히 그렇듯이 우리는 각자 다른 길을 걸어갔으니까요.

온라인 포럼을 통해 졸업반 친구들과 연락을 하고 있었는데 새럴린이 죽었다는 소식을 듣고는 마음이 너무 아팠습니다. 그리고 그동안 그가 어떻게 살았는지 궁금했습니다. 나이가 더 들어갈수록 친구와 가족을 잃는 이런 일이 더 많아지지만, 많은 사람들은 그런 이야기를 되도록 피하려는 경향이 있습니다.

우리가 여전히 슬픔 가운데 있지만, 바울 사도는 사망이 마지막 단어가 아니라는 희망을 전해줍니다(고린도전서 15:54-55). 사망 다음에 따라오는 또 다른 언어는 ‘부활’이라는 단어입니다. 바울은 그리스도께서 부활하셨다는 사실에 그 소망의 근거를 두면서(12절) 이렇게 말합니다. “그리스도께서 만일 다시 살아나지 못하셨으면 우리가 전파하는 것도 헛것이요 또 너희 믿음도 헛것이며”(14절). 믿는 사람들인 우리의 소망이 단지 이 세상에만 국한되어 있다면 그저 불쌍할 뿐입니다(19절).

우리는 언젠가 “그리스도 안에서 잠자는”(18절) 사람들을 다시 만날 것입니다. 할아버지와 할머니, 부모님, 친구, 이웃, 그리고 오래전 학교에서 짝사랑했던 사람들까지 말입니다.

사망이 마지막 단어가 아닙니다. 마지막 단어는 부활입니다.

The Last Word

Her name was Saralyn, and I sort of had a crush on her back in our school days. She had the most wonderful laugh. I’m not sure whether she knew about my crush, but I suspect she did. After graduation I lost track of her. Our lives went in different directions as lives often do.

I keep up with my graduating class in some online forums, and I was intensely sad when I heard that Saralyn died. I found myself wondering about the direction her life had taken over the years. This is happening more and more the older I grow, this experience of losing friends and family. But many of us tend to avoid talking about it.

While we still sorrow, the hope the apostle Paul talks about is that death doesn’t have the final say (1 CORINTHIANS 15:54–55). There is something that follows, another word: resurrection . Paul grounds that hope in the reality of the resurrection of Christ (V. 12), and says “if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (V. 14). If our hope as believers is limited to this world only, that’s just a pity (V. 19).

We will one day see those again who have “fallen asleep in Christ” (V. 18)—grandparents and parents, friends and neighbors, or perhaps even old schoolyard crushes.

Death doesn’t get the last word. Resurrection does. JOHN BLASE

우리를 인도해주는 빛

식당은 아주 좋았으나 어두웠습니다. 테이블마다 작은 촛불 하나만 깜박거리고 있었습니다. 손님들은 각자 스마트폰을 켜서 그 빛으로 메뉴판을 읽고 같은 테이블에 함께 온 사람들을 쳐다보고, 먹고 있는 음식까지 식별했습니다.

마침내 손님 한 사람이 조용히 의자에서 일어나 식당 종업원에게 다가가 한 마디 물었습니다. “불 좀 켜줄 수 있겠습니까?” 이윽고 천장에 달린 등에 온화한 빛이 들어오자 실내에 환호성이 터졌습니다. 그리고 웃음과 함께 즐거운 대화가 오가고 감사의 말들이 이어져 나왔습니다. 그때 내 친구 남편이 전화를 끄고 수저를 들더니, 모두를 대신해서 말했습니다. “빛이 있으라! 자, 모두 듭시다!”

어둠침침했던 저녁이 탁 하는 스위치 소리와 함께 축제의 장소로 바뀌었습니다. 그러나 참 빛의 실제 근원을 아는 것이 얼마나 더 중요한 일인지요. 하나님이 우주를 창조하신 첫날, “빛이 있으라”는 놀라운 말씀을 하시니 “빛이 있었습니다”(창세기 1:3). 그리고 “그 빛이 하나님이 보시기에 좋았습니다”(4절).

빛은 우리를 향한 하나님의 크신 사랑을 표현합니다. 그분의 빛은 죄의 어두움으로부터 우리를 인도해내시는 “세상의 빛”(요한복음 8:12)이신 예수님을 가리켜줍니다. 그분의 빛 속에서 걸어갈 때 우리는 아들이신 예수님을 영화롭게 하는 삶으로 가는 밝은 길을 찾게 됩니다. 주님은 이 세상에서 가장 밝게 빛나는 선물입니다. 주님이 비추시는 대로 우리가 주님의 길을 갈 수 있기를 소원합니다.

Guiding Light

The restaurant was lovely but dark. Only one small candle flickered on every table. To create light, diners used their smartphones to read their menus, look to their tablemates, and even to see what they were eating.

Finally, a patron quietly pushed back his chair, walked over to a waiter, and asked a simple question. “Could you turn on the lights?” Before long, a warm ceiling light flashed on and the room erupted with applause. But also with laughter. And happy chatter. And thank-yous. My friend’s husband turned off his phone, picked up his utensils, and spoke for us all. “Let there be light! Now, let’s eat!”

Our gloomy evening turned festive with the flick of a switch. But how much more important to know the real source of true light. God Himself spoke those astonishing words, “Let there be light,” on the first day when He created the universe, “and there was light” (GENESIS 1:3). Then “God saw that the light was good” (V. 4).

Light expresses God’s great love for us. His light points us to Jesus, “the light of the world” (JOHN 8:12), who guides us from the gloom of sin. Walking in His light, we find the bright path to a life that glorifies the Son. He is the world’s brightest gift. As He shines, may we walk His way. PATRICIA RAYBON

여기 미끄러워요!

몇 년 전 스키를 배울 때, 아들 조쉬의 뒤를 따라 완만하게 보이는 경사를 타고 내려갔습니다. 아들만 바라보고 내려가느라 아들이 산에서 가장 가파른 데로 방향을 틀어 내려가고 있는 것을 알아차리지 못했지요. 그래서 경사 아래로 위태롭게 달리다 완전히 중심을 잃어버리고는 당연히 곤두박질쳤습니다.

시편 141편은 우리가 얼마나 쉽게 죄의 경사를 따라 미끄러질 수 있는지를 보여줍니다. 그와 같은 경사를 항상 경각시켜주는 한 가지 방법이 기도입니다. “내 마음이 악한 일에 기울지 말게 하시며”(4절)라는 간구는 주기도문의 “[나를] 시험에 들게 하지 마옵시고 다만 악에서 구하옵소서”(마태복음 6:13)라는 간구와 거의 일치합니다. 선하신 하나님은 이 기도를 들으시고 응답해주십니다.

그리고 이 시편에서 나는 또 다른 은혜의 대리인, 곧 신실한 친구의 모습을 봅니다. “의인이 나를 칠지라도 은혜로 여기며 책망할지라도 머리의 기름 같이 여겨서 내 머리가 이를 거절하지 아니할지라”(시편 141:5). 유혹은 간교합니다. 우리는 잘못하고 있는 것을 언제나 잘 알아차리지 못합니다. 이 때 진정한 친구는 객관적으로 판단해줄 수 있습니다. “친구의 책망은 아파도 진심에서 나오는 것입니다”(잠언 27:6, 새번역). 질책을 받아들이기 힘들어도 우리 마음을 상하게 하는 그 말을 “호의”로 받아들인다면, 그것은 우리를 기름 부어 다시 순종의 길로 돌아서게 해줄 것입니다.

신뢰하는 친구의 진실한 마음을 받아들이고, 기도하며 하나님을 의지할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

It’s Slippery Out Here!

Years ago, when I was learning to ski, I followed my son Josh down what appeared to be a gentle slope. With my eyes on him I failed to notice he turned down the steepest hill on the mountain, and I found myself careening down the slope, completely out of control. I cratered, of course.

Psalm 141 shows how we can easily find ourselves slipping down sin’s slope. Prayer is one of the ways we stay alert to those slopes: “Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil” (V. 4) is a plea that echoes the Lord’s Prayer almost exactly: “Lead [me] not into temptation, but deliver [me] from the evil one” (MATTHEW 6:13). In His goodness, God hears and answers this prayer.

And then I find in this psalm another agent of grace: a faithful friend. “Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness; let him rebuke me—that is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it” (PSALM 141:5). Temptations are subtle. We’re not always aware that we’re going wrong. A true friend can be objective. “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (PROVERBS 27:6 NKJV ). It’s hard to accept rebuke, but if we see the wounding as a “kindness” it can become an anointing that puts us back on the path of obedience.

May we be open to truth from a trusted friend and rely on God through prayer. DAVID H. ROPER

영원한 유산

토마스 에디슨은 처음으로 실용 전구를 발명하였고, 조너스 소크는 효과적인 소아마비 백신을 개발하였으며, 에이미 카마이클은 예배 때 부르는 찬송가를 많이 작시하였습니다. 그런데 당신은 어떻습니까? 당신은 왜 이 세상에 태어 났을까요? 당신은 인생을 어디에 바치겠습니까?

창세기 4장을 보면 하와가 “잉태하여 가인을 낳습니다.” 처음 으로 가인을 안아본 하와는 “내가 여호와로 말미암아 득남하였다” (1절)고 말합니다. 하와는 이 놀라운 인류 최초의 출산 경험을 표현하는데, 전적으로 하나님의 주권적인 도움 때문이었다는 것을 나타내려고 “여호와로 말미암아” 라는 말을 사용했습니다. 궁극적으로 하나님은 하와의 후손 가운데 태어난 또 다른 아들을 사용하셔서 그분의 백성들을 구원하려 하셨습니다(요한복음 3:16). 이 얼마나 놀라운 유산인지요!

부모가 된다는 것은 사람들이 이 세상에 무언가 영원히 남길 수 있는 여러 가지 방법 중 하나에 불과합니다. 어쩌면 당신이 글을 쓰거나, 뜨개질하거나, 아니면 그림을 그리는 방에서 무언가 남길 수도 있고, 당신이 신앙의 영향을 받지 못한 누군가에게 본이 될 수도 있습니다. 아니면 당신이 한 일이 사후에 전혀 예상 못한 모습으로 나타날 수도 있습니다. 당신이 남긴 작품이라든지 사업을 성실하게 운영했다는 명성처럼 말입니다. 그 어떤 경우이든, 당신도 하와처럼 당신이 한 일이 하나님으로 말미암았다고 말할 수 있겠습니까? 당신은 하나님을 높이기 위해 그분의 도움을 받아 무슨 일을 하시겠습니까?

A Lasting Legacy

Thomas Edison invented the first practical electric light bulb. Jonas Salk developed an effective polio vaccine. Amy Carmichael penned many of the hymns we sing in worship. But what about you? Why were you put on earth? How will you invest your life?

Genesis 4 tells us that Eve “became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.” After holding Cain for the first time, Eve announced, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man” (V. 1). In an effort to explain the surprising experience of the very first birth, Eve uses a phrase dripping with dependency on the sovereign aid of God: “With the help of the LORD .” Eventually, through Eve’s seed, God would provide rescue for His people through another Son (JOHN 3:16). What a legacy!

Parenthood is just one of many ways people make lasting contributions to this world. Perhaps your offering will burst forth from a room where you write or knit or paint. You might be an example for another who is deprived of godly influence. Or your investment might even come after your death in ways you could never imagine. It may be the work you leave behind or your reputation for integrity in business. In any case, will your words echo Eve’s dependency on God? With the help of the Lord, what will you do for His honor? 변하지 않는 것

얼마 전에 아내 캐리와 함께 대학 동기 모임에 참석하려고 캘리포니아 주 산타바바라에 갔습니다. 그 도시는 35년 전 우리 부부가 처음 만나 서로 사랑에 빠졌던 곳입니다. 그래서 우리는 한때 젊음을 만끽하며 함께 보냈던 몇 군데를
찾아가보기로 했습니다. 그러나 우리가 즐겨 갔던 멕시코 식당이 있던 곳에 가보니 건축자재점이 들어서 있었습니다. 그 건물 벽에는 그 식당이 40년간 지역사회에 이바지한 공을 기념 하기 위해 공들여 만든 철제 명판이 매달려 있었습니다.

지금은 황량하지만 한 때는 갖가지 색깔의 식탁과 화사한 파라솔이 군데군데 분위기 있게 놓여있던, 아직도 눈에 선한 그 보도를 나는 물끄러미 바라보았습니다. 주위를 둘러보니 너무나 많이 변해 있었습니다! 하지만 그런 변화 가운데에도 하나님의 신실하심은 절대 변하지 않습니다. 다윗은 통렬한 마음으로 이렇게 진술했습니다. “인생은 그 날이 풀과 같으며 그 영화가 들의 꽃과 같도다 그것은 바람이 지나면 없어지나니 그곳이 다시 알지 못하거니와 여호와의 인자하심은 자기를 경외하는 자에게 영원부터 영원까지 이르며 그의 의는 자손의 자손에게 미치리니” (시편 103:15-17). 그러나 다윗은 이 시편을 이렇게 끝맺습니다. “내 영혼아 여호와를 송축하라”(22절).

고대 철학자 헤라클리투스는 “같은 강물에 두 번 발을 들여놓을 수 없다.”고 말했습니다. 우리를 둘러싼 삶은 늘 변하고 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 한결같으시며, 언제나 그분이 하신 약속을 지킬 수 있는 분이십니다! 하나님의 신실하심과 사랑은 대를 이어가며 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Unchanging

My wife, Cari, and I recently traveled to Santa Barbara, California—the city where we met and fell in love thirty-five years ago—to attend our college reunion. We planned to visit several places where we had spent some of the best hours of our youth together. But when we arrived at the location of our favorite Mexican restaurant, we found a building supply store there. A wrought iron plaque hung on the wall commemorating the restaurant and its four decades of service to the community.

I gazed on the barren but still familiar sidewalk, once dotted cheerfully with colorful tables and bright umbrellas. So much had changed around us! Yet in the midst of change, God’s faithfulness never changes. David observed poignantly: “The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD ’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children” (PSALM 103:15–17). David concludes the psalm with these words: “Praise the LORD , my soul” (V. 22).

The ancient philosopher Heraclitus said, “You can never step in the same river twice.” Life is always changing around us, but God remains the same and can always be trusted to keep His promises! His faithfulness and love can be counted

우리의 모습

나는 아내가 될 사람을 처음 우리 가족에게 인사시켰던 때를 영원히 잊지 못할 것입니다. 형과 누나가 눈을 반짝이면서 내 예비 아내에게 물었습니다. “정확히 우리 동생의 어떤 점이 마음에 들었나요?” 그녀는 살며시 미소 지으며 하나님의 은혜로 내가 성장하여 자신의 사랑하는 남자가 되었다고 확실하게 대답했습니다.

나는 그 영특한 대답이 아주 마음에 들었습니다. 그것은 그리스도 안에서 하나님이 어떻게 우리의 과거뿐만 아니라 성장한 오늘의 모습까지 보고 계시는지 알고 하는 대답이기 때문입니다. 사도행전 9장에서 주님은 아나니아에게 교회를 박해하는 사람으로 하나님이 눈을 멀게 하신 사울을 고쳐주라고 지시하십니다. 아나니아는 사울이 예수 믿는 자들을 잡아 박해하고 죽이기까지 한다고 말하면서 그 지시를 받아들여야 할지 망설였습니다. 하나님은 아나니아에게 사울이 과거에 어떤 사람이었는지에 주목하지 말고 어떤 사람으로 변화되어 있는지를 주목하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 즉 사울은 이방인들(유대인이 아닌 자들)과 왕들을 비롯한 온 세상 사람들에게 복음을 전할 전도자가 되었다는 것입니다(15절). 아나니아는 사울을 바리새인이자 박해하는 사람으로 보았지만, 하나님은 바울을 사도이자 복음전도자로 보셨던 것입니다.

우리는 때때로 우리 자신을 과거의 모습으로, 이를테면 온통 실패하고 결점 많은 존재로만 볼 때가 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리를 새로운 피조물로 보시면서, 지난날의 우리가 아니라 예수님 안에서 지금의 우리의 모습과 앞으로 성령의 능력에 의해 변화되어 갈 우리의 모습을 다 보고 계십니다. 하나님, 우리 자신과 다른 사람들을 이렇게 바라볼 수 있도록 가르쳐주소서!

Who We Are

I’ll never forget the time I took my future wife to meet my family. With a twinkle in their eyes, my two elder siblings asked her, “What exactly do you see in this guy?” She smiled and assured them that by God’s grace I had grown to be the man she loved.

I loved that clever reply because it also reflects how, in Christ, the Lord sees more than our past. In Acts 9, He directed Ananias to heal Saul, a known persecutor of the church whom God had blinded. Ananias was incredulous at receiving this mission, stating that Saul had been rounding up believers in Jesus for persecution and even execution. God told Ananias not to focus on who Saul had been but on who he had become: an evangelist who would bring the good news to all the known world, including to the gentiles (those who weren’t Jews) and to kings (V 15). Ananias saw Saul the Pharisee and persecutor, but God saw Paul the apostle and evangelist.

We can sometimes view ourselves only as we have been—with all of our failures and shortcomings. But God sees us as new creations, not who we were but who we are in Jesus and who we’re becoming through the power of the Holy Spirit. O God, teach us to view ourselves and others in this way! - PETER CHIN

회복을 향한 준비

군복무 중 독일에 주둔하고 있을 때, 나는 새로 나온 1969 년식 폭스바겐 비틀을 한 대 샀습니다. 정말 아름다운 차였습니다! 차체의 짙은 초록색이 갈색 가죽으로 된 내부를 잘 보완해주었습니다. 그러나 시간이 지나면서 차가 낡아가며 이것저것 문제가 생기기 시작했고, 자동차 발판과 한 쪽 문이 부서지는 사고가 발생했습니다. 그때 상상력이 풍부했었더라면 “이 클래식 카는 복원하기에 안성맞춤인데!”라고 생각할 수도 있었고, 돈이 좀 더 있었더라면 차를 어떻게 고쳐볼 수도 있었을 것입니다. 하지만 그렇게 하지 못했습니다.

감사하게도 완벽한 상상력과 무한한 자원을 가지고 계시는 하나님은 상처 받고 망가진 사람들을 그렇게 쉽게 포기 하지 않으십니다. 시편 85편은 회복 대상에 적합한 사람들과 회복시키는 능력을 가진 하나님에 대해 묘사하고 있습니다. 시대적 배경은 이스라엘 민족이 70년간의 유배생활(하나님을 반역한 죄로 받은 형벌)에서 돌아온 이후로 추정됩니다. 그들은 지난날을 돌아보면서 하나님이 베푸신 은혜와 함께 용서해주신 것을 회고하며(1-3절) 이제 하나님께 도움을 구하고(4-7절) 하나님으로부터 여러 가지 축복을 기대합니다 (8-13절).

우리 가운데 때때로 난타 당해 상처 입고 망가진 느낌을 갖지 않는 사람이 누가 있을까요? 그것은 때로는 우리가 우리에게 저지른 일 때문에 그렇습니다. 그러나 주님은 회복과 용서의 하나님이시기에 겸손한 마음으로 그분께로 오는 이들에게는 반드시 희망이 있습니다. 주님은 그분께로 돌이키는 자들을 두 팔 벌려 맞아주시고, 그렇게 하는 자들은 주님 품 안에서 안전함을 누릴 수 있습니다.

Ready for Restoration

While stationed in Germany in the army I purchased a brandnew 1969 Volkswagen Beetle. The car was a beauty! The dark green exterior complemented the brown leatherette interior. But as the years took their toll, stuff began to happen, including an accident that ruined the running board and destroyed one of the doors. With more imagination, I could have thought, “My classic car was a perfect candidate for restoration!” And with more money, I could have pulled it off. But that didn’t happen.

Thankfully the God of perfect vision and unlimited resources doesn’t give up so easily on battered and broken people. Psalm 85 describes people who were perfect candidates for restoration and the God who is able to restore. The setting is likely after the Israelites had returned from seventy years of exile (their punishment for rebellion against God). Looking back, they were able to see His favor—including His forgiveness (VV 1–3). They were motivated to ask God for His help (VV 4–7) and to expect good things from Him (VV 8–13).

Who among us doesn’t occasionally feel battered, bruised, broken? And sometimes it’s because of something we’ve done to ourselves. But because the Lord is the God of restoration and forgiveness, those who humbly come to Him are never without hope. With open arms He welcomes those who turn to Him; and those who do, find safety in His arms. - ARTHUR JACKSON

아무 소용없음

헤로인 중독은 통렬하리만큼 비극적입니다. 헤로인을 사용하는 사람들은 내성이 길러져서 같은 황홀경을 느끼기 위해서는 더 많은 양을 투여해야 하는데, 얼마 안가서 투입양이 너무 많아지면서 죽게 됩니다. 누군가가 특별히 센 약을 투여하여 죽었다는 소식을 들으면, 중독자들의 첫 반응은 두려움이 아니라 “어디서 그것을 구할 수 있지?”라고 합니다.

씨 에스 루이스는 상상력에 근거한 그의 책 ‘스크루테이프의 편지’에서 그런 미궁에 빠지는 것에 대해 경고하면서 악마가 유혹하는 기술에 대해 이렇게 설명합니다. 먼저 약간의 쾌락을 주는 것으로부터 시작하라. 가능하면 하나님이 허락하신 선한 쾌락 중의 하나를 주되 하나님이 금지하신 방법으로 즐기게 하라. 일단 그 사람이 걸려들면 그 쾌락의 양을 조금 줄여 그가 더 많은 것을 원하도록 유인하라. “쾌락이 점점 줄어들수록 그것을 더욱 더 갈구하게” 하라. 그러면 결국 “그 사람의 영혼을 아무런 대가도 지불하지 않고 차지하게 될 것이다.”

잠언 7장에는 성적인 죄의 유혹으로 인한 파괴적인 순환이 설명되어 있습니다. 성은 하나님이 주신 좋은 선물입니다. 그러나 결혼생활 밖에서 성적인 즐거움을 구할 때 우리는 마치 “도살장으로 끌려가는 소와 같습니다”(22절, 새번역). 우리보다 더 강한 사람들도 해로운 쾌락 추구로 스스로를 무너뜨렸습니다. 그러므로 “주의하고” “마음이 [그릇된] 길로 치우치지 말게 하십시오”(24-25절). 죄는 우리를 매혹시켜 중독에 빠지게도 하지만 그 끝은 항상 죽음입니다 (27절). 하나님의 능력으로 죄의 유혹을 피함으로써 우리는 그분 안에서 진정한 기쁨과 충족을 누릴 수 있습니다.

All for Nothing

Heroin addiction is poignantly tragic. Users build tolerance, so larger hits are required for the same high. Soon the dosage they seek is more than enough to kill them. When addicts hear someone has died from an exceptionally strong batch, their first thought may not be fear but “Where can I get that?”

C. S. Lewis warned of this downward spiral in Screwtape Letters, his imaginative look at a demon’s explanation of the art of temptation. Start with some pleasure—if possible one of God’s good pleasures—and offer it in a way God has forbidden. Once the person bites, give less of it while enticing him to want more. Provide “an ever increasing craving for an ever diminishing pleasure,” until finally we “get the man’s soul and give him nothing in return.”

Proverbs 7 illustrates this devastating cycle with the temptation of sexual sin. Sex is God’s good gift, but when we seek its enjoyment outside of marriage we’re “like an ox going to the slaughter” (V 22). People stronger than us have destroyed themselves by pursuing highs that are harmful, so “pay attention” and “do not let your heart turn to [wrongful] ways” (VV 24–25). Sin can be alluring and addicting, but it always ends in death (V 27). By avoiding—in God’s strength—the temptation to sin, we can find true joy and fulfillment in Him. MIKE WITTMER
