예수님이 주신 새 마음

브록과 데니스는 어린 시절 친구였지만, 자라면서 브록은 데니스의 예수님을 향한 믿음에 흥미를 보이지 않았습니다. 데니스는 친구를 사랑했고 브록이 어둡고 우울한 길을 가고 있다는 것을 알기에 그를 위해 기도했습니다. 데니스는 그를 위해 기도하면서 에스겔 선지자의 말을 인용했습니다: “하나님, 브록에게서 돌 같은 마음을 제거하고 살 같은 마음을 주세요”(에스겔 11:19 참조). 브록이 하나님의 길로 걸어가서 풍성한 삶을 살기를 간절히 바랐습니다.

10년이 지난 후에도 데니스는 여전히 친구를 위해 신실하게 기도하고 있었습니다. 그러던 중 브록의 전화를 받았습니다. “방금 예수님께 헌신했어!” 데니스는 마침내 친구가 자신의 모든 것을 내려놓고 하나님을 신뢰하게 되었다는 말을 듣고 기뻐하며 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

데니스는 친구를 위한 기도 속에서 하나님께서 에스겔을 통해 그의 백성에게 하신 약속에 집중했습니다. 비록 이스라엘 백성들이 가증스러운 행위로 하나님에게서 멀어졌지만, 하나님은 그들의 마음을 바꾸시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 그들에게 한 마음을 주고 그 속에 새 영을 주며 그 몸에서 돌 같은 마음을 제거하고 살처럼 부드러운 마음을 주어 내 율례를 따르며 내 규례를 지켜 행하게 하리니”(19절). 하나님은 백성들의 마음이 변하면 그들이 하나님을 신실하게 따를 것을 알았습니다(20절).

우리가 아무리 하나님에게서 멀어져도 주님은 따뜻하고 사랑스러운 마음을 주시기를 기뻐하십니다. 우리는 죄에서 구원해 주실 예수님을 믿고, 믿음과 회개로 주님께로 돌아가기만 하면 됩니다.

A NEW HEART IN CHRIST

Brock and Dennis were childhood friends, but as they grew up, Brock showed little interest in Dennis’ faith in Jesus. Dennis loved his friend and prayed for him because he knew the path he was going down was dark and depressing. In praying for Brock, Dennis adapted the words of the prophet Ezekiel: “Please God, remove from Brock a heart of stone and give him a heart of flesh” (SEE EZEKIEL 11:19). He longed that Brock would walk in God’s way so he would flourish.

Ten years later, Dennis was still praying faithfully. Then he received a call from Brock: “I just gave my life to Jesus!” Dennis rejoiced, tears brimming, to hear his friend exclaim that he’d finally come to the end of himself and trusted God with his life.

In his prayers, Dennis focused on God’s promises to His people through Ezekiel. Although they’d turned from God with detestable practices, He said He would change their hearts: “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh” (V. 19). With changed hearts, they would follow their God faithfully (V. 20).

No matter how far we’ve turned from God, He delights to give us warm and loving hearts. We need only to turn to Him with faith and repentance as we trust in Jesus to save us from our sins.

서로 돕는 코끼리들

어느 늦은 밤, 케냐의 한 코끼리 보호구역에서 새끼 코끼리가 우물에 빠졌다는 신고가 들어왔습니다. 어둠 속에서 절망의 울음소리가 들리는 가운데 구조팀이 도착해 보니, 새끼 코끼리 코의 3분의 2가 하이에나에게 뜯겨 나간 것을 발견했습니다. 새끼를 안전한 피난처로 옮긴 구조대는 부상당한 이 어린 코끼리에게 “어디가 잘린 것”이라는 뜻의 ‘롱우로’ 라는 이름을 지어주었습니다. 코의 3분의 1만 남았지만, 롱우로는 회복되어 보호구역에 있는 나머지 코끼리 무리의 품으로 돌아갔습니다. 코끼리는 선천적으로 서로가 서로에게 필요하다는 것을 알기 때문에 서로를 돕습니다.

고린도전서 12장에서 바울은 그리스도의 몸인 교회 안에서 우리가 서로 도와야 한다고 강조합니다. 여기서 바울은 사람 몸의 각 지체가 지닌 기능을 은유적으로 사용하면서, 하나님이 어떻게 자기 백성들이 그들에게 있는 각기 은사를 받아들여 하나님의 몸이 기능하도록 의도하셨는지 설명합니다(12-26 절). 그런 다음 바울은 다양성 속의 연합이 어떻게 이루어지는지 설명합니다. “하나님이 몸을 고르게 하여 부족한 지체에게 귀중함을 더 하사 몸 가운데서 분쟁이 없고 오직 여러 지체가 서로 같이 돌보게 하셨느니라”(24-25절).

약하든 강하든, 화려하든 평범하든 서로 도웁시다. 코끼리처럼 사람들도 서로가 필요합니다.

ELEPHANT HELPERS

Late one night, a Kenyan elephant sanctuary received a call that an elephant calf had fallen into a well. The rescue team arrived to cries of despair flooding the darkness and discovered that two-thirds of the baby’s trunk had been lost to hyenas. Transporting the calf to their safe haven, they named him Long’uro, which means “something that has been cut.” Though he possessed only one-third of his trunk, Long’uro healed and was embraced by the rest of the herd at the sanctuary. Elephants innately know they need each other, so they help each other.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul underscores our need to help each other within the body of Christ. He uses the metaphor of the human body and its individual parts to describe how God intends His people to welcome all gifts in all people because all are needed for His body to function (VV. 12-26). Then Paul explains how unity in diversity is accomplished. “God has put the body together,” he wrote, “giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other” (VV. 24-25).

Whether weak or strong, fancy or common, let’s help each other. Like the elephants, people need each other too. ELISA MORGAN

하나님 구원의 상속자

부모님이 교통사고로 갑자기 돌아가셨을 때, 아비게일은 막대한 부동산 자산을 물려받았습니다. 또 부모님이 이 자산을 신탁에 맡겨 놓았다는 사실도 알게 되었습니다. 그래서 당분간은 대학 등록금에 필요한 돈만 사용할 수 있었습니다. 나중에 나이가 들면 신탁에 둔 나머지 유산을 쓸 수 있을 것입니다. 처음엔 답답함을 느꼈지만 유산을 계획적으로 분배해서 지급하도록 한 부모님의 지혜였음을 나중에는 깨달았습니다.

갈라디아서 4장에서 바울은 비슷한 사례를 통해 아브라함과 맺은 하나님의 언약에서 약속된 상속자로서 이스라엘의 상황을 설명합니다. 하나님은 아브라함에게 복을 주겠다고 언약하셨고 할례는 그 약속의 징표였습니다 (창세기 17:1-14 참조). 그러나 그 징표가 약속 그 자체는 아니었습니다. 아브라함의 후손들은 그것을 성취할 미래의 한 후손을 기다려야 했습니다. 이삭이 태어났으며, 그것은 하나님의 백성을 구원할 하나님의 아들이 미래에 탄생할 것을 가리키는 것이었습니다(갈라디아서 4:4-5).

이스라엘은 아비게일처럼 “그의 아버지가 정한 때”(2절)까지 기다려야 했습니다. 그때 가서야 이스라엘이 그 기업을 온전히 차지할 수 있었습니다. 그들이 원했던 것은 예수의 죽음과 장사, 부활과 함께 때가 되면 곧바로 이루어질 것입니다. 그리스도를 믿는 모든 사람은 더 이상 죄의 노예가 아니라 “하나님의 자녀”입니다(7절). 새 언약이 세워졌습니다. 우리는 하나님께 나아갈 수 있습니다! 우리는 그분을 “아빠 아버지”라고 부를 수 있습니다(6절).

HEIRS OF GOD’S SALVATION

When Abigail’s parents died tragically in a car accident, she inherited a large real estate portfolio. She also learned that her parents had arranged to place the portfolio in a trust. For the time being, she could access only enough money for her college tuition. The rest would come when she was older. Abigail was frustrated, but she later realized her parents’ wisdom in planning a measured delivery of the inheritance.

In Galatians 4, Paul uses a similar example to illustrate Israel’s situation as promised heirs of God’s covenant with Abraham. God had made a covenant with Abraham to bless him, and circumcision was a sign of that promise (SEE GENESIS 17:1-14). However, the sign wasn’t the promise. Abraham’s descendants would await a future descendant who would fulfill it. Isaac was born and pointed to the future birth of a Son who would redeem God’s people (GALATIANS 4:4-5).

Israel, like Abigail, had to wait until the “time set by his father” (V. 2). Only then could Israel take full possession of the inheritance. What they wanted immediately would arrive in due time with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. All who put their faith in Christ were no longer slaves to sin, “but God’s child” (V. 7). A new covenant has been established. We have access to God! We can call him “Abba, Father” (V. 6).

예수님을 위해 함께 일하기

단기 선교팀과 함께 브라질을 여행하는 동안 아마존 정글에 교회 건물을 짓는 일을 도왔습니다. 이미 세워진 기초 위에 대형 레고 세트처럼 건물을 세웠습니다. 교회 건물의 기둥과, 콘크리트 벽, 창문, 지붕용 철제 빔, 지붕을 덮는 타일 등 여러 부분을 조립했습니다. 그런 다음 벽에 페인트를 칠했습니다.

아마존 지역에서 우기에 교회를 제때 지을 수 있을지 걱정하는 사람들도 있었습니다. 하지만 하나님의 은혜로 집중 호우는 내리지 않았습니다. 여러 어려움에도 불구하고 몇몇 현지인들의 도움으로 우리는 기록적으로 단기간 안에 공사를 마쳤습니다.

느헤미야와 이스라엘 백성들이 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하기 위해 유배에서 돌아왔을 때 많은 장애물을 만났습니다. 적들은 이스라엘 백성들이 무엇을 하는지 알게 되자 분노하며 그들을 조롱했습니다(느헤미야 4:1-3). 그러나 느헤미야는 기도했고 백성들은 함께 인내했습니다. “이에 우리가 성을 건축하여 전부가 연결되고 높이가 절반에 이르렀으니 이는 백성이 마음 들여 일을 하였음이니라”(6절). 적의 공격 위협이 있을 때 이스라엘 백성들은 기도하며 경계를 늦추지 않았습니다(7-23절). 그들은 52일 만에 성벽을 재건했습니다.

때때로 우리는 벅차고 어려운 일에 직면할 때가 있습니다. 장애물이 우리 앞에 나타나면 그리스도 안에서 형제 자매된 우리들은 희망을 잃을 수 있습니다. 하지만 이럴 때일수록 하나님의 도움을 받으면 승리의 순간이 될 수 있습니다. 폭풍우를 막아 주시는 하나님을 믿고 극복하기 위해 그분을 바라봅시다.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR JESUS

During a trip to Brazil with a short-term missions team, we helped construct a church building in the Amazon jungle. On the foundation, already laid, we assembled the various parts of the church like a giant LEGO set: supporting columns, concrete walls, windows, steel beams for the roof, and tiles on the roof. Then we painted the walls.

Some people were concerned because they wondered if we could build the church in time during monsoon season. But by God’s grace, the intense rain held off. With help from a few locals and despite various obstacles, we got the job done in record time.

When Nehemiah and the Israelites returned from exile to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, they faced many obstacles. When their enemies found out what they were doing, they were furious and insulted them (NEHEMIAH 4:1-3). But Nehemiah prayed and the people persevered together: “We rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart” (V. 6). When their foes threatened to attack, the Israelites prayed and kept guard as they worked (VV. 7-23). They rebuilt the wall in fiftytwo days.

Sometimes we’re faced with a daunting task. Obstacles appear in our way, and we and our brothers and sisters in Christ can lose hope. But times like this can be a triumphant moment with God’s help. Trust Him to hold off the rainstorms and look to Him to overcome.

주 안에서 안식

몇 년 전, 한 연구에서 십대 우울증과 수면 시간의 연관성을 분석했습니다. 이 연구를 읽은 한 젊은 여성은 그 결과에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 언제 멈춰야 할지 모르는 것 같아요. 너무 무리해서 결국 수면 부족과 스트레스로 병을 얻게 되네요.” 그러면서 이 젊은 여성은 하나님께 영광을 돌리기 위해 시간을 관리한다는 것이 실제로 어떤 의미인지 알고 싶다고 말했습니다. 바쁨과 결실의 차이는 무엇일까요?

바쁘다고 해서 생산적이거나 충실하거나 성과가 있다는 보장은 없습니다. 자칫 우리는 바쁜 것이 가장 중요하다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 누가복음 10장 41절에서 예수님은 마르다가 “많은 일로 염려하고 화가 나” 있을 때, 제자의 자세로 “주님의 발 앞에”(39절) 앉은 동생 마리아의 선택이 더 나은 것이었음을 부드럽게 일깨워 주셨습니다.

우리는 그리스도를 섬기고자 하는 열망으로 더 많은 일을 하면 그분이 우리를 더 알아봐 주실 거라고 생각하며 너무 많은 일을 하고 있지는 않나요? 골로새서 3장 17절은 “무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 주 예수의 이름으로 하라” 고 말씀하십니다. 그러나, 그분의 이름으로 우리 자신을 소진해가면서까지 하라고는 말씀하지 않습니다. 시편 46편 10절에서 우리는 이런 일깨움을 듣습니다. “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다.”

오늘의 할 일 목록에만 집중하기보다는 속도를 늦추고 그리스도와 함께 보내는 시간을 가져봅시다. 그래야만 진정한 “[우리] 마음이 쉼”(마태복음 11:29)을 얻을 수 있습니다.

RESTING IN CHRIST

Several years ago, a study analyzed the link between teenage depression and the amount of sleep teens received each night. After reading the study, a young woman commented on the results: “I never seem to know when to stop—I push myself so hard that I end up making myself sick from lack of sleep and stress.” Then she said she wanted to know what it really meant to manage her time to honor God. What was the difference between busyness and fruitfulness?

Being busy is no guarantee for being productive, faithful, or fruitful. Yet, we might think that being busy is what’s most important. In Luke 10:41, Jesus gently reminded Martha that she was “worried and upset about many things” and that her sister Mary’s choice of sitting “at the Lord’s feet” (V. 39)—a posture of discipleship— was the better choice.

In our desire to serve Christ, are we doing too much, thinking that He’ll notice us more if we do more? Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” However, it doesn’t say to burn ourselves out in His name. In Psalm 46:10, we hear this reminder: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Let’s take some time to slow down and spend time with Christ rather than focusing solely on our to-do list. Only then can we find true “rest for [our] souls” (MATTHEW 11:29).

이 명단은 생명이다

이츠하크 스턴은 수동 타자기쪽으로 몸을 구부려 밤새도록 총 1,098명의 이름을 쳤습니다. 모두 천명이 넘는 이름들은 공장주 오스카 쉰들러가 나치로부터 보호한 유대인 노동자들의 명단입니다. 그 문서를 움켜쥐며 스턴은 외쳤습니다. “이 명단은 절대적으로 선합니다. 이것은 생명이니까요.” 이 명단에 이름을 올린 사람들은 홀로코스트에서 살아남을 수 있었습니다. 2012 년에는 이들 생존자들의 후손이 8,500명에 달하는 것으로 예상되었습니다.

그러나 하나님은 관심을 가지십니다! “이집트 땅에서 나온 이스라엘 자손”이라는 말은 역사의 기록입니다(4절, 새번역). 그 백성들은 곧 그들에게 약속된 땅에서 살게 될 것입니다. 그리고 언젠가 바로 이 유다 지파에서 메시아가 오실 것입니다. 이 생명의 명단은 유대 백성들뿐 아니라 예수님을 믿는 모든 사람들의 명단입니다.

우리는 영화 ‘쉰들러 리스트’와 역사적 기록을 통해 오스카 쉰들러의 명단에 대해 알고 있습니다. 마찬가지로 우리는 성경에 기록된 이야기를 통해 하나님의 위대한 구원을 알고 있습니다. 성경 말씀을 읽을 때, 성령님이 우리에게 이 구원의 명단의 가치에 대해서 깨우쳐 주시기를 소망합니다. 말씀에 기록된 명단들 또한 우리에게 말하고자 하는 것이 있습니다.

THE LIST IS LIFE

Hunched over a manual typewriter, Itzhak Stern worked through the night, tapping out names—1,098 in all. The names comprised a list of Jewish workers protected from the Nazis by factory owner Oskar Schindler. Clutching the document, Stern declared, “The list is an absolute good. The list is life.” Those named on its pages would survive the Holocaust. In 2012, it was estimated that the descendants of the survivors numbered 8,500.

The Bible contains its share of lists. We tend to skip them. Too many names; too much repetition. We might even say today’s reading is . . . boring. “The descendants of Judah by their clans were: through Shelah, the Shelanite clan; through Perez, the Perezite clan . . .” (NUMBERS 26:20). Who cares?

God cares! “These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt,” says the historical record (V. 4). Soon the people would inhabit the land promised to them. And one day, Messiah would come from this very clan of Judah. The list is life, not only for the Jewish people, but for all who trust in Jesus.

We know of Oskar Schindler’s list from the powerful film Schindler’s List and historical records. We know of God’s great salvation from the story recorded for us in the Bible. As we read the Scriptures, may His Spirit show us the worth of even the lists. They have something to say to us too.

염려를 예수님께 맡기세요

낸시는 문제만 보며 앞날을 두려워했습니다. 남편 톰이 메인 주 시골에서 하이킹을 하던 중 세 번이나 현기증으로 기절한 것입니다. 하지만 근처 작은 병원 의사들은 어떤 이상도 발견하지 못했습니다. 더 큰 규모의 의료 센터에 가서 추가 검사를 한 결과 역시 아무런 문제가 발견되지 않았습니다. “정말 두려웠었다”고 낸시는 말했습니다. 남편이 퇴원할 때 마지막으로 심장 전문의에게 “이제 어떻게 해야 하나요?”라고 물었습니다. 이때 그의 지혜로운 말이 낸시의 관점을 영원히 바꾸어 놓았습니다. 그는 낸시에게 “가서 당신의 인생을 사세요.”라고 말했습니다. 낸시는 회상합니다. “그냥 경솔하게 한 말이 아니었어요. 그것은 우리 부부에게 준 조언이었어요.”

전문의의 진단은 산상수훈에 나오는 예수님의 가르침을 담고 있습니다. 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨지요. “그러므로 내가 너희에게 이르노니 목숨을 위하여 무엇을 먹을까 무엇을 마실까 몸을 위하여 무엇을 입을까 염려하지 말라 목숨이 음식보다 중하지 아니하며 몸이 의복보다 중하지 아니하냐” (마태복음 6:25). 예수님의 지침은 의학적 또는 기타 문제나 증상을 무시하라는 것이 아닙니다. 다만 예수님은 “염려하지 말라”(25절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런 다음 “너희 중에 누가 염려함으로 그 키를 한 자라도 더할 수 있겠느냐”(27 절) 물으셨습니다.

선지자 이사야도 비슷한 지혜의 말씀을 주었습니다. “겁내는 자들에게 이르기를 굳세어라 두려워하지 말라 보라 너희 하나님이 오사”(이사야 35:4). 낸시와 톰 부부는 이제 하루에 8 킬로 이상 걸을 수 있는 용기를 얻었습니다. 더 이상 걱정하며 걷는 것이 아니라 기쁨으로 걸음을 내딛습니다.

GIVE YOUR WORRIES TO JESUS

Nancy feared the future, seeing only trouble. Her husband Tom had fainted three times during a hiking trip in rural Maine. But doctors at a small nearby hospital found nothing wrong. At a larger medical center, where doctors conducted additional tests, they also found no problem. “I was very afraid,” Nancy stated. As her husband was released, she questioned the cardiologist one last time, asking, “What do we do now?” He gave her words of wisdom that forever changed her outlook. “Go live your life,” he said. “It wasn’t in a flippant way,” Nancy recalls. “It was his advice to us.”

Such guidance captures Jesus’ instruction in the Sermon on the Mount. He said, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” (MATTHEW 6:25). Such guidance doesn’t say to ignore medical or other problems or symptoms. Instead, Christ simply said, “Do not worry” (V. 25). He then asked, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (V. 27).

The prophet Isaiah offered similar wisdom. “Say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come’ ” (ISAIAH 35:4). For Nancy and Tom, they’re inspired now to walk more than five miles a day. No longer walking with worry, they step out with joy.

쉽게 화내지 않기

몇 달간 자가 격리를 마치고 교회에 나갔을 때, 한동안 보지 못했던 성도들을 만나게 되어 기뻤습니다. 일부 성도들, 특히 연로하신 분들은 안전관리 차원에서 나오지 않으셨고, 안타깝게도 이 세상을 떠난 분들도 계시다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그래서 한 노부부가 예배당에 들어와 늘 하던 대로 내 뒤 좌석에 앉는 것을 보고 매우 반가웠습니다. 나는 두 분께 손을 흔들었습니다. 남편 분은 제 인사에 화답했지만 아내 분은 미소도 보이지 않고 나를 빤히 쳐다만 보았습니다. 나는 마음에 상처를 받았고 그 이유가 궁금했습니다.

몇 주일 후에 (내 인사에 답하지 않은) 바로 그 여인이 간병인으로 보이는 친구의 도움을 받아 앉고 서는 것을 보았습니다. 그 오래된 교회 친구는 많이 아팠기 때문에 나를 알아보지 못했던 것이 분명했습니다. 몇 주 전 그 친구가 아주 반갑게 하는 내 인사에 답하지 않았을 때 가까이 가서 화를 내지 않았던 것이 다행이었습니다.

잠언은 현명한 삶에 대한 많은 조언을 주는데 쉽게 화를 내지 않는 것도 그 중 하나입니다. 실제로 잠언은 “노하기를 더디하는 것이 사람의 슬기요 허물을 용서하는 것이 자기의 영광이니라”(19:11)고 말합니다. 기분 상하지 않고 “우리의 화를 억제하는 법”(11절)을 배우면 우리는 명예를 얻을 수 있습니다. 인내와 “지혜”(8절)가 필요할 수도 있지만, 자신을 극복하고 다른 사람을 사랑하기로 선택하는 것만으로도 충분한 보상을 얻을 수 있습니다.

NOT EASILY OFFENDED

When I entered my church after several months of quarantine, I was excited to see members I hadn’t seen in a while. I realized that some members, especially older ones, just wouldn’t be back—some due to safety reasons and others, unfortunately, because they’d passed from this life. So I was quite excited when I spotted an older couple coming into the sanctuary and taking their normal seat behind me. I waved at them both. The man returned my greeting, while his wife stared at me without even smiling. I was hurt and wondered why.

It was a few Sundays later that I observed the same woman (who hadn’t returned my greeting) being helped by a friend who was showing her when to stand or sit—acting as her caregiver. My old church friend was apparently very sick and hadn’t recognized me. I’m glad I didn’t approach her or even get upset when she didn’t return my enthusiastic greeting.

Proverbs offers a lot of advice for living wisely, and not being easily offended is one of its gems. In fact, it says “sensible people . . . earn respect by overlooking wrongs” (19:11 NLT). Choosing not to get offended and learning to “control [our] temper” (V. 11 NLT) can bring us honor. It may require patience and “wisdom” (V. 8), but the rewards also are well worth getting over ourselves and choosing to love others.

측량할 수 없는 하나님

2023년 2월, 제임스 웹 우주망원경은 또 하나의 놀라운 발견을 해냈습니다. 인류가 지금까지 우주를 들여다볼 수 있었던 영역을 넘어 6개의 새로운 은하계를 발견한 것입니다. 이 발견은 우리가 우주에 대해 알고 있던 많은 것을 뒤집어 놓았습니다. 한 천문학자는 말합니다. “우리는 예상치 못한 것을 발견했고, 이는 실제로 과학에 문제들을 던져 주었습니다.” 그리고 어떤 천체물리학자는 “모른다고 잘못된 것은 아니라” 고 사과하듯이 말했습니다.

UNFATHOMABLE GOD

In February 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope made another remarkable discovery. Beyond where humankind had previously been able to peer into the universe, it discovered six new galaxies. This discovery upended much of what we know about space. One astronomer remarked, “It turns out we found something so unexpected it actually creates problems for science.” An astrophysicist said almost apologetically, “There is nothing wrong with not knowing.”

It seems that God continues to surprise us all. The prophet Isaiah, long before the advent of space telescopes, seems to be talking directly to the scientists of today: “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is . . . the Creator of the ends of the earth” (ISAIAH 40:28). He goes on, predating that astrophysicist’s words, “[God’s] understanding no one can fathom” (V. 28).

But if we stop there, we miss the beauty of this passage. He who is unfathomable is not impersonal. He who created those six galaxies, and all the others (V. 26), is the same God who “gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (V. 29). The God of the universe is also the personal God who helps those who hope in Him to “soar on wings like eagles” (V. 31). Rest assured, the unfathomable God is the one we do know—the one who speaks into our lives with power and strength.

뿔 달린 모세? 1515년에 완성된 미켈란젤로의 걸작 조각품에 묘사된 모세의 모습입니다. 이마 바로 위 모세의 머리카락에서 두 개의 뿔이 튀어나와 있습니다.

미켈란젤로 뿐만 아니라 많은 르네상스 및 중세 화가들은 모세를 그렇게 그렸습니다. 왜 그랬을까요? 당시 히브리어 성경의 라틴어 번역본이 모세가 하나님을 영접하며 모세의 얼굴에 광채가 난다고 묘사한 것과 관련이 있습니다 (출애굽기 34:29 참조). 원어에서는 “뿔”과 관련된 단어를 사용하여 모세의 얼굴에서 광채가 나는 빛의 “광선”을 묘사했는데, 라틴어 성경에서는 이를 문자 그대로 번역했습니다. 모세의 광채를 잘못 해석했던 것입니다.

READING, WRITING, AND JESUS

Moses with horns? That’s the way he’s depicted in Michelangelo’s masterpiece sculpture completed in 1515. Two horns protrude from Moses’ hair just above his forehead.

Michelangelo wasn’t alone—many Renaissance and medieval artists depict Moses that way. Why? It has to do with the Latin translation of the Hebrew Bible available at the time, which described Moses’ radiant face after being in God’s presence (SEE EXODUS 34:29). The original language uses a word related to “horns” to describe “beams” of light shining from Moses’ face, and the Latin Vulgate Bible translated it literally. Moses was “misread.”

Have you ever misread someone? After a man unable to walk from birth was healed by Peter in Jesus’ name (ACTS 3:1-10), the apostle told his fellow Israelites that they had misread Jesus. “You killed the author of life,” he said pointedly, “but God raised him from the dead” (V. 15). He continued, “This is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer” (V. 18). Peter even said Moses had pointed to Christ (V. 22).

It was “by faith in the name of Jesus,” a “faith that comes through him,” that the man’s life was transformed (V. 16). No matter how we’ve misunderstood Him or what our past contains, Christ welcomes us when we turn to Him. The author of life stands ready to write new beginnings for us!
