하나님 음성을 귀기울여 듣기

20세기 초, 뉴욕은 소음 공해로 정말 시끄러웠습니다. 고가 열차와 자동차, 전차, 신문팔이 소년들의 큰 소리, 그리고 분주한 인파들로 뉴욕의 삶은 소음으로 넘쳐났습니다! 그러나 어느 날 브로드웨이와 34번가의 교차로에서 찰스 켈로그라고 하는 사람이 함께 가던 친구에게 “들어봐, 귀뚜라미 소리가 들려.”라고 외쳤습니다.

“그럴 리가, 이런 소음 속에서 그런 작은 소리가 들릴 리 없어.” 친구가 대답했습니다. 하지만 자기 주장을 굽히지 않던 켈로그는 결국 한 빵집 창문에서 울고 있는 귀뚜라미를 찾아냈습니다. “정말 대단한 청력을 가졌네.” 라고 친구가 인정하자, 켈로그는 “전혀 그렇지 않아. 그건 무엇에 집중하느냐의 문제지.”라고 말했습니다.

하나님의 선지자 엘리야는 하나님 능력이 놀랍게 역사하는 것을 직접 보았지만, 지금은 이교도 여왕이 두려워 동굴에 숨어 있었습니다(열왕기상 19:1-9). 그러나 하나님은 이번에는 강력한 방법으로 그와 소통하기를 원하지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 강풍과 지진, 그리고 타오르는 불을 보내기도 하셨지만 (11-12절), 이 순간만큼은 엘리야가 하나님과 개인적으로 조용히 소통하는 시간이었습니다. 하나님은 선지자에게 “부드러운 속삭임”(12절)으로 말씀하기를 원하셨습니다.

오늘날, 우리 삶에 소음이 넘쳐나지만 하나님은 여전히 성경을 통해, 그리고 성령으로 조용히 말씀하십니다. 기도하며 하나님께 집중하는 시간을 보낼 때 하나님의 위로하시고 인도하시는 음성을 듣는데 도움이 될 것입니다.

LISTENING FOR GOD’S VOICE

In the early twentieth century, New York City had become a noisy place. With an overhead train, cars, trolleys, newsboys yelling, and people rushing around—life was loud! Yet, one day at Broadway and 34th Street, a man named Charles Kellogg declared to his friend, “Listen, I hear a cricket.”

“Impossible,” his friend answered. “With all this racket you couldn’t hear a tiny sound like that.” Yet, Mr. Kellogg insisted, and eventually found the cricket, chirping in the window of a bakery. “What astonishing hearing you have,” his friend proclaimed. “Not at all,” Mr. Kellogg replied. “It’s a matter of where you focus your attention.”

Elijah was a prophet of God who’d just seen Him perform an amazing display of His power, but now the prophet was hiding in a cave for fear of the pagan queen (1 KINGS 19:1-9). This time, however, God didn’t want to communicate in a powerful way. Even though He had sent a great wind, an earthquake, and even a roaring fire (VV. 11-12), it was time now for Elijah to commune with God personally and quietly. God wanted to speak to the prophet in “a gentle whisper” (V. 12).

Today, there’s a surplus of noise in our lives, yet God still speaks in a quiet voice through the Scriptures and by His Spirit. Taking time to prayerfully focus our attention on God will help us tune in to His comforting, guiding voice.

진심으로 하나님을 신뢰하기

나는 애처롭게 울고 있는 길고양이 소리에 가던 길을 멈추었습니다. 방금 전 누군가가 길 위에 그냥 버린 음식물 더미를 보고 지나쳤는데, ‘와, 하나님께서 이 불쌍한 고양이에게 음식을 주시려는구나’라고 생각했습니다. 음식물이 근처 기둥 뒤에 숨겨져 있어서 나는 야윈 고양이를 거기로 유인했습니다. 고양이는 안심하며 나에게 다가오다 멈추어 서서는 더 이상 따라오질 않았습니다. 나는 고양이에게 ‘왜 나를 믿지 못하고 안 오는거야? 너에게 줄 음식이 이렇게 많은데!’라고 묻고 싶었습니다.

그때 갑자기 이런 생각이 들었습니다. ‘나도 하나님과의 관계에서 이와 비슷하지 않은가?’ 나도 하나님이 주시려는 것이 바로 코 앞에 있다는 것도 모르고, ‘하나님, 저는 하나님은 믿어도 하나님이 하시는 말씀은 믿을 만하지 못한 것 같아요.’ 하는 식으로 하나님의 인도하심에 반응했을 때가 얼마나 많았는지요.

하나님의 길은 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 주님이 우리를 사랑하고 진심으로 위하시기 때문입니다. 하나님이 우리에게 말씀하십니다. “내가 네 갈 길을 가르쳐 보이고 너를 주목하여 훈계하리로다”(시편 32:8). 그러나 하나님은 우리를 동물들처럼 강제하지를 않으십니다(9절). 하나님은 우리가 그분을 자발적으로 따르기를 진실로 원하시며, 그럴 때 우리와 영원히 함께하실 것을 약속하십니다. “여호와를 신뢰하는 자에게는 인자하심이 두르리로다”(10절). 우리가 할 일은 매 걸음마다 하나님께서 함께하심을 알고 그를 계속 따라가는 것입니다.

TRULY TRUSTING GOD

The stray cat mewed pitifully, stopping me in my tracks. I had just walked past a pile of food that someone had carelessly discarded on the ground. Wow, God’s provided a meal for this hungry cat, I thought. The food was hidden behind a nearby pillar, so I tried to lure the emaciated cat to it. It moved toward me trustingly—then stopped and refused to follow me further. I wanted to ask, Why don’t you trust my directions? There’s a whole meal waiting for you!

Then it struck me: Don’t I act similarly in my relationship with God? How often have I responded to His directions thinking, I do trust You, God, but I don’t think Your instructions are reliable—not realizing that His divine provision might be waiting right around the corner.

God’s paths are trustworthy, for He loves us and has our best interests at heart. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you,” He tells us (PSALM 32:8). Yet, He doesn’t treat us like animals that need to be controlled (V. 9). He desires for us to follow Him willingly and promises His everlasting presence as we do so: “The Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him” (V. 10). All we need to do is just keep following Him, knowing that He’ll be with us every step of the way.

소망이 없을 때와 있을 때

해마다 가을이면 우리 아들은 돼지풀 같은 식물로 인한 알러지를 앓습니다. 어느 날 밤엔 증상이 너무 심해 병원에 가야 한다고 생각 했습니다. 그때 우리 가족은 몇 달 간 심각한 건강 문제를 겪고 막 회복된 터라, 나는 낙담해서 기도조차 하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그러나 남편은 하나님이 우리를 도와 회복시켜 주신 모든 것에서 소망을 찾았습니다. 그는 어떻게 해야 할지를 놓고 기도했습니다. 곧 좋은 약을 구해 아들의 상태가 나아졌습니다.

가나안 정탐을 함께 다녀온 사람들이 낙심했을 때 갈렙과 여호수아는 희망과 긍정의 태도를 보여주었습니다(민수기 14:6-9). 하나님께서는 그 땅을 이스라엘에게 이미 약속하셨고, 갈렙은 “우리가...그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라”(13:30)고 했습니다. 그러나 다른 사람들은 가나안 사람들이 너무 강하고 성읍도 심히 견고해 취할 수 없다고 생각했습니다(28, 31-33절).

심각한 도전이 앞에 놓였지만 갈렙은 지난 날 하나님께서 어려움 가운데 있는 그의 백성들에게 행하신 신실하심을 믿었습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 결국은 가나안을 정복했습니다. 그리고 “전심으로” 하나님을 따랐던 갈렙은 자신의 몫을 받았습니다(여호수아 14:9).

소망이 없어 보이는 많은 상황 속에서도 하나님을 알고 그분의 신실하심을 믿는 사람들에게는 언제나 소망의 이유가 있습니다. 그것은 하나님의 능력과 은혜가 우리와 끝까지 함께 하심을 믿기 때문입니다.

HOPELESS OR HOPEFUL

Every fall, plants like ragweed irritate my son’s sinuses. One night, his symptoms became so severe I thought he should see a doctor. Our family had just recovered from months of serious health issues, and I was so discouraged I didn’t even want to pray. My husband, however, found hope in all that God had already helped us through. He prayed for direction. Shortly after, with the help of medicine, our son’s condition improved.

Though some of their companions were discouraged, Caleb and Joshua also showed hope and optimism after scouting out the land of Canaan (NUMBERS 14:6-9). God had promised the area to Israel, and Caleb said, “We should . . . take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” (13:30). The others felt it was impossible, that the Canaanites were too powerful and their cities too well fortified (VV. 28, 31-33).

These were serious challenges; but Caleb’s faith rested on God’s past faithfulness to His people in their struggles. God’s people did eventually conquer Canaan, and Caleb received his share because he had followed Him “wholeheartedly” (JOSHUA 14:9).

Many situations feel hopeless, but for those who know God and believe in His faithfulness, there’s always a reason for hope as we trust His power and grace to carry us through.

나를 본받으라

아빠가 호수로 낚싯줄을 던지자 두 살 된 토마스도 자기 장난감 낚싯대로 아버지를 따라 했습니다. 나중에 토마스는 얕은 호수 가장자리에 서서 낚싯대를 물에 담그고 잡초를 “잡아” 물고기를 다시 놓아주는 아버지를 흉내냈습니다. 토마스는 매번 “잡은” 잡초를 들고 아빠에게 자랑하며 호수에 다시 넣어주었습니다.

우리는 대개 다른 사람을 관찰하고 따라하면서 좋고 건전한 것과 그렇지 못한 것도 배웁니다. 아마도 그것이 신약 성경 여러 곳에서 예수님을 따르는 사람들에게 복음의 신실한 종들을 본받으라고 권고하는 이유일 것입니다 (데살로니가후서 3:9 참조; 히브리서 13:7; 요한3서 1:11).

데살로니가후서 3장에서 바울은 본받지 말아야 할 행동(게으르고, 분열을 일으키고, 참견하는 생활방식; 6, 11절)의 예를 들면서, 대신 자신과 다른 지도자들의 진실한 모습을 본받으라고 서신에 썼습니다(7-10절). 그는 이어서 “선을 행하다가 낙심하지 말라”(13절)고 격려했습니다.

그러나 바울은 자신의 모범도 궁극적으로 그리스도께 의지하는 것만이 본받을 가치가 있다는 것을 잘 알았습니다(고린도전서 11:1). 오직 그리스도의 믿음과 능력 안에 우리 삶의 뿌리를 내릴 때에만 우리는 은혜와 지혜 안에서 자랄 수 있습니다.

IMITATE ME

As his daddy cast his fishing line out into the lake, two-year-old Thomas mimicked his father’s actions with his own toy fishing pole. Later, as he stood on the shallow edge of the lake, Thomas also tried imitating his father’s example of throwing fish back into the water by dipping his pole in the water and “catching” weeds. After each “catch,” Thomas held the weeds up for his daddy to admire before releasing them back into the lake.

We tend to learn—both what’s good and wholesome and what’s definitely not—through observing and imitating others. Perhaps that’s why in the New Testament, followers of Jesus are often encouraged to look to faithful servants of the gospel as role models (SEE 2 THESSALONIANS 3:9; HEBREWS 13:7; 3 JOHN 1:11).

In 2 Thessalonians 3, Paul gave examples of behavior not to imitate (idle, disruptive, and meddling lifestyles; vv. 6, 11) and told his readers to imitate instead the examples of integrity found in him and the other leaders (VV. 7-10). And he encouraged them to “never tire of doing what is good” (V. 13).

But Paul knew that ultimately his example was only worth imitating insofar as it pointed to reliance on Christ (1 CORINTHIANS 11:1). Only by rooting our lives in Christ’s faith and power can we grow in grace and wisdom.

한량없는 하나님의 사랑

병들고 연로한 아버지가 함께 살게 되면서 조시는 매일 아버지를 돌봐야 하는 일이 큰 부담으로 다가왔습니다. 구입해야 하는 약값도 비싸고, 온 종일 근무하는 직장 일에 더하여 간병하는 일과 아버지의 점점 악화되는 건강 상태에 따라 어떤 결정을 내려야 하는지 등이 그녀를 점점 지치게 만들었습니다. 조시는 말합니다. “어떻게 하면 지치지 않고 힘과 자원, 지혜와 사랑을 얻어 나누어줄 수 있을까?”

조시는 예레미야와 하나님의 백성이 느꼈던 슬픔을 기록한 책 예레미야 애가에서 희망을 찾았습니다. 예루살렘은 바벨론 사람들에 의해 파괴되었고, 유대인들은 불확실한 포로 생활을 앞두고 있었습니다. 그 고통은 굉장했지만 하나님은 “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함 이니이다”(예레미야애가 3:22)라고 약속하셨습니다. 그들은 비록 약속의 땅에 있지 않더라도 “긍휼이 무궁하시므로”(22절) 하나님이 약속하신 사랑은 그들과 함께 있을 것입니다.

그분의 자녀들을 향한 하나님의 사랑에는 한계가 없습니다. “여호와는 나의 기업이시니 그러므로 내가 그를 바라리라”고 한 24절 말씀을 통해 조시는 깨달았습니다. “한량없는 사랑을 베푸시는 하나님계서 내게 힘을 주시니, 나는 매일 필요한 것들을 얻어 나누어줄 수 있다.”

하나님께 순종하는 삶을 살 때 우리 앞에 어떤 일이 닥치더라도 희망을 가질 수 있습니다. 완벽한 지혜의 하나님은 우리가 무엇을 필요로 하는지 아시고, 하나님이 보시기에 가장 좋은 것을 우리에게 주실 것입니다.

GOD’S LOVE NEVER RUNS OUT

When Josie’s ill and aging father moved in with her, she felt overwhelmed by the daily needs of caring for him. The medications she needed to buy were expensive. The caregiving tasks and the wisdom needed to guide her decision-making for his worsening health condition, aside from her other “full-time” job, were wearing her down. She said, “How could I keep gathering and giving out strength, practical resources, wisdom, and love?”

Josie found hope in Lamentations, a book about the grief Jeremiah and God’s people felt. Jerusalem had been destroyed by the Babylonians, and the Jews now faced the uncertain days of exile ahead. The suffering was overwhelming, but God promised that “because of [His] great love we are not consumed” (LAMENTATIONS 3:22). His covenant love would remain with them, even if they were no longer in the promised land: “for his mercies never cease” (V. 22 NLT).

God’s love for His children has no limits. “God is my portion, my personal source of everything,” Josie realized, echoing verse 24. “I can gather and give out what’s needed each day because I draw my strength from Him, whose love never runs out.”

As we live in obedience to God, we can have hope, no matter what lies ahead. In His perfect wisdom, He knows what we need and will provide for us as He sees best.

어느 학교 버스 운전기사가 운전 중 기절하면서, 학생 60명을 태운 대형 버스가 통제를 잃었습니다. 7학년 학생인 딜론 리브스가 자리에서 벌떡 일어나 버스 앞쪽으로 달려가 아슬아슬한 순간에 브레이크를 천천히 밟았습니다. 대부분의 학생들이 휴대폰으로 문자 메시지를 보내고 게임을 하는 동안 휴대폰이 없었던 딜론은 고개를 들어 앞을 보고 있다가 반응을 한 것 입니다. 그는 운전자가 브레이크를 천천히 밟는 것을 전에 여러 번 보았기 때문에 어떻게 하는지를 알고 있었습니다. 그가 정신을 차리고 주의를 산만 하게 하지 않은 것이 탑승한 모든 사람과 나중에 깨어난 운전자의 생명까지 구하는 데 도움이 되었습니다.

우리는 하나님과 성경에 있는 지혜(디모데후서 3:16-17)에서 눈을 떼게 만드는 화면이나 다른 것들로 인해 주의가 산만해질 수 있습니다. 그 대신 “예수님을 바라보며”(히브리서 12:2) 깨어 있으면 하나님께서 부르실 때 즉시 움직일 수 있습니다.

ACTION—NOT DISTRACTION

A school bus driver passed out at the wheel, and his large vehicle loaded with sixty students was careening out of control. Seventh grader Dillon Reeves burst from his seat, rushed to the front of the bus, and slowly stepped on the brake in the nick of time. While most students were busy texting or playing games on their phones, Dillon—who didn’t have a phone— had his head up and reacted. He knew to depress the brake slowly as he’d seen the driver do many times. Remaining alert and not distracted helped him save the lives of all aboard, including the driver who later revived.

Joshua had to step up courageously after his leader, Moses, was no longer “in the driver’s seat”—leading the people of Israel. God said to him, “Moses my servant is dead. Now . . . get ready” (JOSHUA 1:2). What’s more, He instructed, “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to . . . not turn from [the Book of the Law] to the right or to the left” (V. 7). God was telling Joshua not to get distracted and to keep his focus, and to keep his eyes on the instructions He’d given—meditating on them “day and night” (V. 8).

We can be distracted by screens and other things that cause us to take our eyes off God and the wisdom found in Scripture (2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17). Instead, as we remain alert “by keeping our eyes on Jesus” (HEBREWS 12:2 NLT), we can spring into action when God calls.

믿음의 발걸음

우리는 넷이서 뉴욕의 아름다운 왓킨스 글렌 협곡을 산행했습니다. 때때로 경이로운 폭포와 200피트(약 61미터) 높이의 절벽을 바라보며 감탄에 차 함께 서 있었습니다. 또한 젖은 바위와 끝없는 계단을 오르면서 숨을 고르고 아픈 다리를 쉬려고 멈추기도 했습니다. 그렇게 정상에 가까이 왔는데, 정상에 올랐다가 내려오던 한 등산객이 “10걸음만 더 가면 832 걸음이 됩니다.”라고 말했습니다. 어쩌면 우리가 뒤처져 그 모든 아름다운 경치를 못 볼 수도 있었기에 그 가는 길이 얼마나 어려운지 몰랐던 것이 오히려 더 잘 된 것이었습니다.

인생의 여정에도 어려운 단계가 있습니다. 예수님과 바울은 믿는 사람 들에게 환난과 박해에 대해 경고했는데(요한복음 16:33; 디모데후서 3:12), 여기에는 좀 생각해 볼 점이 있습니다. 야고보는 “내 형제들아 너희가 여러가지 시험을 만나거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라”(야고보서 1:2)고 했습니다. 왜 온전한 아픔이 아니고 온전한 기쁨으로 여기라고 했을까요? 하나님은 아십니다. 그리고 우리도 “[우리의] 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어 내는 줄” 압니다(3절). 그 목적은 우리가 “온전하고 구비하여 아무 부족함이 없게”(4절) 하려 함입니다.

우리에게 고통이 있을지라도 조용히 생각해보면 하나님께서 우리와 주변 사람들 내면에 아름답고 강한 성품을 만들어 주시는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리는 언젠가 “주께서 자기를 사랑하는 자들에게 약속하신 생명의 면류관을 얻으리라”(12절)고 하신 진리의 말씀에 감사하게 될 것입니다. 끝까지 함께 등반하기로 합시다.

STEPS OF FAITH

Four of us hiked through the beautiful Watkins Glen Gorge in New York. At times we stood together in awe as we gazed in wonder at waterfalls and two-hundred-foot cliffs. Other times, we had to stop to catch our breath and rest our hurting legs as we climbed wet rocks and endless steps. When we neared the top, a hiker heading back down said, “You’ve got only 10 steps to go of your 832.” Maybe it was best we hadn’t known how difficult the journey would be because we might have stayed back and missed the beauty of it all.

The journey of life has difficult steps too. Jesus and Paul warned believers about trouble and persecution (JOHN 16:33; 2 TIMOTHY 3:12), and this requires some perspective. James said, “Consider it pure joy . . . whenever you face trials of many kinds” (JAMES 1:2). Why pure joy instead of pure agony? God knows and we “know that the testing of [our] faith produces perseverance” (V. 3). But to what end? So that we may be “mature and complete, not lacking anything” (V. 4).

If we’ll stop and look, despite the pain, we may see the beautiful strength of character God is producing in us and those around us. And we’ll learn to appreciate the truth that one day we’ll “receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (V. 12). Let’s keep climbing together.

예수님께 드리는 고백

독성 물질을 남들 모르게 놔두면 심각한 결과를 초래할 수 있습니다. ‘월 스트릿 저널’의 기사에 의하면 통신 회사들이 미국 전역에 2천개가 넘는 납을 입힌 케이블들을 방치해 왔다고 합니다. 유독성 납이 수중 케이블과 땅 속과 전봇대 같은 곳에 널려 있다는 것입니다. 납은 부식되면서 결국은 사람들이 “살고 일하고 노는” 곳에 까지 이르게 됩니다. 독성 물질의 노출 위험에 대해 오래 전부터 알고 있었던 통신회사들을 포함해 많은 회사들이 납이 외부 환경으로 스며들어가는 잠재적인 위험을 매우 심각하게 받아들이고 있습니다.

나 혼자 가지고 해결하지 않은 죄의 독성도 우리 삶에 심각한 결과를 가져올 수 있습니다. 사람은 죄를 지으면 자연히 그것을 하나님과 다른 사람들이 모르게 덮어버리고 감추려는 경향이 있습니다. 그러나 하나님과 하나님의 “율법”(잠언 28:9)에 거스르는 일에 탐닉하면서 그것을 놔두고 숨기고 변명하려는 것은 어리석은 일입니다. 잠언은 이렇게 말합니다. “자기의 죄를 숨기는 자는 형통하지 못하나 죄를 자복하고 버리는 자는 불쌍히 여김을 받으리라”(13절).

성경은 우리가 자신의 죄를 하나님께 고백하면 하나님께서는 그 분의 풍성한 은혜로 우리를 죄로부터 깨끗케 하실 것이라고 말합니다. “만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며... 우리를 깨끗하게 하실 것이요”(요한1서 1:9). 그러므로 독소가 우리의 마음과 다른 사람의 삶에 스며들기 전에 하나님께 우리의 죄를 솔직하게 고백할 수 있게 도와달라고 간구합시다.

CONFESSING TO CHRIST

Hidden and ignored sources of toxins can have severe consequences. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, telecom companies have left behind more than two thousand lead-covered cables across the United States. The toxic lead runs underwater, “in the soil, and on poles overhead.” As the lead deteriorates, it ends up in places where people “live, work, and play.” Many telecom companies, some of which have known for years about the dangers of toxic exposure, are taking the potential risk of lead leaching into the environment very seriously.

The toxin of unconfessed and unaddressed sin can also pose serious consequences in our lives. When a person sins, there’s a natural tendency to try to cover up or conceal it from God and others. But it’s foolish to indulge in things that go against Him and His “instruction” (PROVERBS 28:9)—attempting to ignore, hide, or excuse them. As the writer reveals, “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (V. 13).

When we confess our sins to God, Scripture reveals that He will purify us from them in His abundant grace: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive . . . and purify us” (1 JOHN 1:9). So let’s ask God to help us honestly confess our sins before the toxins leach into our hearts and into the lives of others.

무한한 공간 너머로!

애니메이션 영화 토이 스토리에 나오는 장난감들은 아이가 방을 나가거나 잠이 들 때마다 살아 움직입니다. 그 중에 버즈 라이트이어라고 하는 우주 경비대 장남감은 그의 대표적인 구호 “무한한 공간 너머로!”를 외치면서 침실 여기저기를 날아다닙니다.

그런데 이 표현에 많은 사람들이 갸우뚱 합니다. 무한한 공간이 제일 먼 곳이 아닌가요? 어떻게 무한한 공간 “너머”에 무엇이 또 있을 수 있을까요? 수학자 이안 스튜어트는 고대 그리스 철학자들의 지혜를 빌려 무한대 너머에 있는 것은 더 큰 무한대이며 이것은 계속된다는 의견을 말합니다.

예수님은 용서의 영역에서도 그런 기하급수적인 노력을 기울이시는 것 같습니다. 베드로가 예수님께 다른 사람을 용서하는 것에 대해 “몇 번이나 용서하여 주리이까 일곱 번까지 하오리이까”라고 물었을 때, 예수님은 “네게 이르노니 일곱 번 뿐 아니라 일곱 번을 일흔 번까지라도 할지니라” 고 대답하셨습니다(마태복음 18:21-22). 예수님은 계속해서 자비를 베푼 왕과 자비를 베풀지 않은 종을 비교하여 비유로 말씀하시면서, 어떤 사람이 자신의 잘못을 진심으로 뉘우치면 우리가 용서해주어야 하는 횟수에는 제한이 없다고 강조하십니다. 우리는 하나님께서 우리를 용서하시는 것처럼 다른 사람을 용서해야 합니다(33절). 몇 번이고 한이 없는 것입니다.

그것은 우리들에겐 불가능하게 보일 수도 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 끊임없이 하나님의 도움을 구해야 합니다.

우리는 오직 하나님의 능력 안에서만 이것을 할 수 있습니다. 용서 받은 사람은 다른 사람을 용서합니다. 무한한 공간 너머까지!

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!

In the animated movie Toy Story, a child’s toys come to life whenever he leaves the room or falls asleep. One character, a space ranger named Buzz Lightyear, shouts his signature catchphrase while flying about the bedroom: “To infinity and beyond!”

It’s a phrase that has confused many. Isn’t infinity as far as you can go? How can there be anything “beyond” infinity? Drawing on wisdom from ancient Greek philosophers, mathematician Ian Stewart suggests that what is beyond infinity are yet bigger infinities. On and on and on.

Jesus seems to employ such exponential effort in the realm of forgiveness. When Peter asked Jesus about forgiving another person, “How many times must I forgive him . . . seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, you must forgive him more than seven times. You must forgive him even if he wrongs you seventy times seven” (MATTHEW 18:21-22 NCV). Jesus goes on to tell a parable comparing a merciful king and an unmerciful servant, making the point that when someone truly regrets their error, there is no limit to the number of times we’re to forgive. We’re to forgive others the way God forgives us (V. 33). Over and over, on and on.

That may seem impossible to us. That’s why we constantly need to ask God for His help.

Only in His strength can we do this. Forgiven people forgive people. To infinity and beyond!

하나님의 사랑으로 사랑하기

프랑스 르 샹봉 지역의 주민들은 나치 점령 기간 동안 상당수 유대인 어린이들을 포함해 5천명이나 되는 사람들의 생명을 구하기 위해 온갖 위험을 감수했습니다. 고향을 떠나온 난민들은 그 지역의 집과 농장에 숨겨졌습니다. 마을 사람들은 “너희는 나그네를 사랑하라 전에 너희도 애굽 땅에서 나그네 되었음이니라”는 신명기 10장 19절 말씀을 인용하며 회중에게 도움을 요청한 앙드레 트로크메 목사님에게 감명을 받았던 것입니다.

이스라엘 백성에게 주어진 이 명령은 온 땅이 “능하시며 두려우신”(17절) 하나님의 것임을 상기시키는 구절로 시작됩니다. 그러나 하나님은 이스라엘 백성을 사랑하기로 하셨습니다(15절). 또한 이스라엘에 속하지 않은 외국인들을 포함하여 취약하거나 낯선 상황에 있는 사람들을 돌보셨습니다(18절). 외국인으로서 겪는 어려움을 경험으로 알고 있었던 이스라엘 백성은 새 땅에 정착하면서 도움이 필요한 사람들에 대한 하나님의 사랑과 보살핌을 본받아야 했던 것입니다(19절).

우리가 오랫동안 한 직장을 다녔거나 같은 집에서 몇 년을 살았다면 하나님께서는 새로운 직장동료에게 유익한 도움이 되는 말을 해주거나 새로 이사온 가족에게 도움을 주어 “외국인”처럼 느낄 수 있는 사람들에게 친절을 베풀 기회를 주실 수도 있습니다. 그렇게 할 때 우리는 익숙하지 않고 어쩌면 취약한 상황에 처한 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 보여줄 수 있습니다.

LOVING OTHERS WITH GOD’S LOVE

The people of Le Chambon, France, risked everything to help save the lives of as many as five thousand individuals, many of them Jewish children, during the Nazi occupation. The refugees fleeing their homes were hidden in the community’s homes and farms. The townspeople were inspired by pastor André Trocmé, who called on his congregation to help by referencing the words of Deuteronomy 10:19, “You are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.”

This command given to the Israelites comes in a passage that begins with the reminder that the whole earth belongs to God, who is “mighty and awesome” (V. 17). Yet God chose to love the Israelites (V. 15). He also cares for people in vulnerable or unfamiliar situations (V. 18), including foreigners who weren’t part of the nation of Israel. As the Israelites settled in their new home, they were to imitate God’s love and care for those needing help, especially because they knew the unique struggles of being a foreigner (V. 19).

If we’ve been at a job a long time or lived in the same home for several years, God may give us the opportunity to show kindness to someone who feels like a “foreigner,” perhaps by providing helpful advice to a new coworker or assistance to a recently relocated family. When we do, we demonstrate God’s love to those in unfamiliar, and often vulnerable, situations.
