위선자를 대하시는 하나님의 마음

“우리 팀 선수가 그런 짓을 했다면 난 매우 실망했을 것입니다.” 한 크리켓 선수가 2016년에 있었던 경기에서 속임수를 썼던 남아프리카공화국 선수를 두고 한 말이었습니다. 그런데 불과 2년 후에 바로 그 말을 한 선수가 거의 똑같은 스캔들에 휘말렸습니다.

위선 만큼 우리 마음을 괴롭히는 것은 없을 것입니다. 창세기 38장에 있는 유다의 이야기에서 유다의 위선 행위는 치명적인 결과를 초래할 뻔 했습니다. 유다의 두 아들이 다말과 결혼한 후 곧 죽자, 그는 다말의 필요를 채워줘야 할 의무를 슬며시 저버렸습니다(8-11절). 절망한 다말이 창녀의 베일을 쓰고 변장하고 나타나자, 유다가 그녀와 동침했습니다(15-16절).

그런데 과부가 된 그의 며느리가 임신한 사실을 알게 된 유다는 그를 죽여야 한다고 했습니다. “그를 끌어내어 불사르라”고 한 것입니다(24절). 그러나 다말에게는 바로 ‘유다’가 아기의 아버지라는 증거가 있었습니다(25절).

유다는 사실을 부인할 수도 있었을 것입니다. 하지만 그는 자신의 위선을 인정했고, 또 “그는 나보다 옳도다”(26절)라고 하며 다말을 돌보아야할 책임을 받아들였습니다.

그리고 하나님은 이 어두운 유다와 다말의 이야기까지도 우리를 구원하시는 그분의 이야기 속에 엮어 넣으셨습니다. 이렇게 하여 다말의 자녀(29-30절)가 예수님의 조상이 된 것입니다(마태복음 1:2-3).

창세기 38장이 왜 성경에 있을까요? 한 가지 이유는 그것이 우리 인간의 위선적인 마음에 관한 이야기이면서, 또한 하나님의 사랑과 은혜, 자비에 관한 이야기이기 때문입니다.

God’s Heart for Hypocrites

“I’d be very disappointed if one of our team members did that,” said a cricket player, referring to a South African cricketer who’d cheated in a match in 2016. But only two years later, that same player was caught in a nearly identical scandal.

Few things rankle us more than hypocrisy. But in the story of Judah in Genesis 38, Judah’s hypocritical behavior nearly had deadly consequences. After two of his sons died soon after marrying Tamar, Judah had quietly abandoned his duty to provide for her needs (VV. 8–11). In desperation, Tamar disguised herself by wearing a prostitute’s veil, and Judah slept with her (VV. 15–16).

Yet when Judah learned that his widowed daughter-in-law was pregnant, his reaction was murderous. “Bring her out and have her burned to death!” he demanded (V. 24). But Tamar had proof that Judah was the father (V. 25).

Judah could have denied the truth. Instead he admitted his hypocrisy, and also accepted his responsibility to care for her, saying, “She is more righteous than I” (V. 26).

And God wove even this dark chapter of Judah and Tamar’s story into His story of our redemption. Tamar’s children (VV. 29–30) would become ancestors of Jesus (MATTHEW 1:2–3).

Why is Genesis 38 in the Bible? One reason is because it’s the story of our hypocritical human hearts—and of God’s heart of love, grace, and mercy. TIM GUSTAFSON

말씀대로 행하라

브라이언은 그의 형의 결혼식에서 하객 안내를 맡기로 되어 있었는데 나타나지 않았습니다. 당연히 가족들은 실망했고 행사에서 성경봉독을 맡았던 여동생 재스민도 그랬습니다. 재스민은 결혼식에서 잘 알려진 고린도전서 13장의 사랑에 관한 구절을 완벽하게 읽었습니다. 그런데 결혼식 이후, 아버지가 재스민에게 브라이언의 생일 선물을 전해주라고 하셨을 때 그녀는 망설였습니다. 그리고 사랑에 관한 말씀을 읽는 것보다 삶에서 실천하는 것이 더 어렵다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 하지만 그날 밤이 다 가기 전 그녀는 마음을 바꿔 이렇게 고백했습니다. “사랑에 대한 말씀을 읽기만 하고 실천하지 않으면 말이 안 되지.”

성경 말씀을 읽거나 들었어도 실행이 어려워 마음에 찔림을 받은 적이 있습니까? 사실 우리가 다 그렇습니다. 하나님의 말씀을 읽고 듣는 것은 그것에 순종하는 것보다 훨씬 더 쉽습니다. 그래서 야고보의 다음 말은 우리에게 매우 좋은 도전이 됩니다. “너희는 말씀을 행하는 자가 되고 듣기만 하여 자신을 속이는 자가 되지 말라”(야고보서 1:22). 거울 속의 나를 보게 하는 야고보의 말씀은 우리로 미소 짓게 합니다. 자신의 모습에서 조심해야할 부분을 보았을 때 어떤 느낌이 드는지 우리는 알기 때문입니다. 그러나 보는 것만으로 충분하다고 생각한다면 우리는 속는 것입니다. 야고보가 우리에게 하나님의 진리를 “마음속에 새기고” “[계속] 지키라” (25절, 현대인의 성경)고 하는 것은 재스민이 강한 찔림 끝에 실천에 옮긴 것처럼 우리도 그렇게 하라고, 그렇게 살라고 권면하는 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀이 요구하는 것은 바로 그것입니다. 하나님은 그보다 더한 것도 받을 자격이 있으십니다.

Do What It Says

Brian was scheduled to be an usher at his brother’s wedding, but he was a no-show. Understandably, family members were disappointed, including his sister Jasmine who was the Scripture reader for the occasion. At the ceremony she flawlessly read from the well-known Scripture passage about love in 1 Corinthians 13. But after the wedding when her father asked her to deliver a birthday gift to Brian, she hesitated. She found it harder to live the words about love than to read them. Before the evening was over, however, she had a change of mind and admitted, “I can’t stand and read Scripture about love and not practice it.”

Have you ever been convicted by Scripture that you read or heard but found it difficult to carry out? You’re not alone. It’s easier to read and listen to God’s Word than to obey it. That’s why James’s challenge is so fitting: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (JAMES 1:22). His mirror illustration makes us smile because we know what it means to observe something about ourselves that needs attention. But we’re deceived if we think that observing alone is enough. When James nudges us to “[look] intently into” and “[continue] in” God’s truth (V. 25), he encourages us to do what Jasmine was compelled to do—live it. God’s Word calls for it, and He deserves nothing less. ARTHUR JACKSON

당신의 갑옷을 믿으십시오

젊은 작가 시절 나는 창작 워크숍에 참석할 때 종종 자신감을 잃어버리곤 했습니다. 주위를 돌아보면 정식 훈련을 받았거나 오랜 경력을 지닌 거장들이라 할 만한 사람들로 가득 했는데, 나는 그 어느 쪽도 아니었기 때문입니다. 그러나 나에게는 킹 제임스 버전 성경의 언어와 어조와 운율에 길들여진 귀가 있었습니다. 그것은 말하자면 내게 아주 익숙하고 잘 맞는 갑옷과도 같은 것이어서, 그것을 내 글쓰기 스타일과 표현법에 적용했을 때 내게 기쁨이 되었으며, 또한 다른 사람들에게도 기쁨이 되기를 바라고 있습니다.

어린 목동 다윗이 골리앗과 싸우려고 사울의 갑옷을 입었을 때 자신감이 없었다고는 생각되지 않습니다(사무엘상 17:38-39). 다만 그것을 입고 제대로 움직일 수가 없었을 뿐입니다. 다윗은 한 사람의 갑옷이 다른 사람에게는 속박이 될 수 있다는 것을 알았습니다. “이것을 입고 가지 못하겠나이다”(39절). 그래서 그는 자기가 잘 아는 것을 믿었습니다. 하나님은 그 순간을 대비해 정말 필요한 것으로 그를 준비시켜주셨습니다(34-35절). 그가 익숙했던 물매와 돌이 그의 갑옷이었으며 하나님은 그 두 가지를 사용하셔서 그날 이스라엘 민족에게 큰 기쁨을 가져다주셨습니다.

‘누구에게 있는 것이 내게도 있다면 내 인생이 달라질 텐데.’라고 생각하며 스스로 자신 없어 했던 적이 있습니까? 하나님이 특별히 당신에게 주신 재능이나 경험을 생각해보십시오. 하나님께서 주신 당신의 갑옷을 믿으십시오.

Trust Your Armor

As a young writer I was often unsure of myself when I was in writing workshops. I would look around and see rooms filled with giants, if you will—people with formal training or years of experience. I had neither. But what I did have was an ear formed by the language and tone and cadences of the King James Version of the Bible. It was very much my armor, so to speak, what I was used to, and allowing it to inform my writing style and voice has become a joy to me, and I hope to others.

We don’t get the impression that David the young shepherd was unsure of himself when it came to wearing Saul’s armor to fight Goliath (1 SAMUEL 17:38–39). He simply couldn’t move around in it. David realized one man’s armor can be another man’s prison—“I cannot go in these” (V. 39). So he trusted what he knew. God had prepared him for that moment with just what was needed (VV. 34–35). The sling and stones were what David was used to, his armor, and God used them to bring joy to the ranks of Israel that day.

Have you ever felt unsure of yourself, thinking If I just had what someone else has, then my life would be different? Consider the gifts or experiences God has given specifically to you. Trust your God-given armor. JOHN BLASE

풍랑을 잠재우시는 분

짐은 직장에서 함께 일하는 동료들과 부딪히며 있었던 불화, 비판적인 태도, 오해 같은 문제들을 가지고 열을 내며 이야기했습니다. 나는 한 시간 동안 인내하며 그의 관심사들을 듣고 나서 이런 제안을 해보았습니다. “우리 이 상황에서 예수님은 우리가 어떻게 하기를 원하시는지 여쭤봅시다.” 우리 둘은 5분간 말없이 앉아 있었습니다. 그러자 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. 둘 다 하나님의 평화가 우리를 담요와 같이 감싸는 것을 느낀 것입니다. 우리는 그분의 임재와 인도하심을 경험하며 마음이 한결 편해졌고 어려움을 헤쳐 나갈 자신감을 느꼈습니다.

예수님의 제자 베드로에게도 위로를 주는 하나님의 임재가 필요했습니다. 어느 날 밤 다른 제자들과 함께 갈릴리 호수를 건너가고 있을 때 강한 폭풍을 만났습니다. 그런데 갑자기 예수님께서 나타나 물 위를 걸어오시는 게 아니겠습니까! 이를 보고 깜짝 놀란 제자들에게 예수님은 이렇게 안심시키셨습니다. “안심하라 나니 두려워하지 말라” (마태복음 14:27). 베드로가 충동적으로 자기도 예수님처럼 물 위를 걸을 수 있는지 물었습니다. 그는 배에서 나와 예수님을 향해 걸어가다가 곧 초점을 잃으면서 인간으로서 불가능한 위험한 상황에 있음을 깨닫고는 밑으로 가라앉기 시작했습니다. “주여 나를 구원하소서.”라고 소리치는 베드로를 예수님은 사랑으로 구해주셨습니다(30-31절).

베드로처럼 우리도 하나님의 아들이신 예수님께서 삶의 풍랑 속에서도 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 알 수 있습니다!

He Calms the Storms

Jim was frantically sharing about problems he was encountering with his work team: division, judgmental attitudes, and misunderstandings. After an hour of patiently listening to his concerns, I suggested, “Let’s ask Jesus what He would have us do in this situation.” We sat quietly for five minutes. Then something amazing happened. We both felt God’s peace cover us like a blanket. We were more relaxed as we experienced His presence and guidance, and we felt confident to wade back into the difficulties.

Peter, one of Jesus’s disciples, needed God’s comforting presence. One night he and the other disciples were sailing across the Sea of Galilee when a strong storm arose. All of a sudden, Jesus showed up walking on water! Naturally, this took the disciples by surprise. He reassured them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (MATTHEW 14:27). Peter impulsively asked Jesus if he could join Him. He stepped out of the boat and walked toward Jesus. But he soon lost focus, became aware of the dangerous and humanly impossible circumstance he was in, and started sinking. He cried out, “Lord, save me!” and Jesus lovingly rescued him (VV. 30–31).

Like Peter, we can learn that Jesus, the Son of God, is with us even in the storms of life! ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

멀리 미치는 사랑

2012년 미국 동부 해안에서 해양학자들이 ‘메리 리’라는 이름의 길이 16피트(약 5미터), 무게 3500파운드 (약 1.6톤)의 거대한 백상어에 표지를 달았습니다. 이 상어가 수면 위로 나오면 등지느러미에 부착된 송신기가 작동하여 위성으로 그 위치를 추적할 수 있었습니다. 그 후 5년 동안 해안 전역에서 연구가들로부터 서핑하는 사람들까지 모두가 메리 리의 동선을 온라인으로 관찰할 수 있었습니다. 상어가 거의 4만 마일(약 6만 4천 킬로미터)의 거리를 이동한 끝에 어느 날 신호가 끊어졌습니다. 아마도 송신기의 배터리가 다 소모되었던 것 같습니다.

인간의 지식과 기술의 한계는 거기까지입니다. 메리 리를 “추적하던” 사람들은 결국 그를 놓쳐버렸지만 우리 모두는 삶의 매 순간 우리를 살피시는 하나님에게서 결코 벗어날 수 없습니다. 다윗은 이렇게 기도했습니다. “내가 주의 영을 떠나 어디로 가며 주의 앞에서 어디로 피하리이까 내가 하늘에 올라갈지라도 거기 계시며 스올에 내 자리를 펼지라도 거기 계시니이다”(시편 139:7-8). 그는 감사하며 이렇게 외칩니다. “이 지식이 내게 너무 기이합니다”(6절).

하나님이 우리를 알고자 하시는 것은 우리를 사랑하시기 때문입니다. 하나님은 우리의 삶을 지켜보실 뿐 아니라 삶 가운데 들어오셔서 우리 삶을 새롭게 하실 만큼 우리를 사랑하십니다. 예수님의 삶과 죽음, 부활을 통해 가까이 다가오신 하나님을 우리는 이제 알 수 있고 또 영원히 사랑할 수 있습니다. 우리는 결코 하나님의 사랑에서 벗어날 수 없습니다.

Love’s Long Reach

Mary Lee is a sixteen-foot, 3,500-pound great white shark tagged by oceanographers off the east coast of the US in 2012. The transmitter attached to her dorsal fin would be tracked by satellite when she surfaced. For the next five years Mary Lee’s movements were observed online by everyone from researchers to surfers, up and down the coast. She was tracked for nearly 40,000 miles until one day her signal stopped—probably because the battery on her transmitter expired.

Human knowledge and technology reach only so far. Those “following” Mary Lee lost track of her, but you and I can never evade God’s awareness throughout every moment of our lives. David prayed, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there” (PSALM 139:7–8). “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,” he exclaims gratefully (V. 6).

God chooses to know us because He loves us. He cares enough not only to observe our lives but also to enter into them and make them new. He drew near through Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection, so we could know Him in return and love Him for eternity. We can never go beyond the reach of God’s love. JAMES BANKS

여우 잡기

박쥐 한 마리가 처음 집에 들어왔을 때 그냥 우연이겠지 하며 대수롭지 않게 여겼습니다. 그런데 밤에 또 다시 들어오기에 이 작은 동물에 대해 알아보니 박쥐는 조그만 틈만 있어도 사람이 사는 곳에 들어올 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 실제로 박쥐는 동전 크기만 한 틈만 있어도 들어온다고 합니다.

그래서 나는 실리콘 건을 준비하여 작업에 들어가 집 주위를 돌면서 구멍이란 구멍은 모두 메꾸어놓았습니다.

아가서 2장 15절에서 솔로몬은 말썽을 일으키는 또 다른 동물 하나를 언급하면서 “포도원을 헐 수 있는 작은 여우”의 위험에 관해 쓰고 있습니다. 인간관계 속으로 들어와 망칠 수 있는 위험들을 상징적으로 말하는 것입니다. 나는 지금 박쥐나 여우 애호가들의 기분을 상하게 하려는 것이 아니라 박쥐를 집 안에, 여우를 포도밭에 못 들어오게 하는 것이 우리 삶에서 죄를 다루는 것과 비슷하다는 것을 말하는 것입니다 (에베소서 5:3). 하나님의 은혜로 성령님이 우리 안에서 일하시기 때문에 우리는 “육신을 따르지 않고 성령을 따라 살 수 있습니다”(로마서 8:4, 새번역). 성령님의 힘으로 우리는 죄의 유혹에 맞설 수 있습니다.

그리스도 안에서 이제 우리가 “주 안에서 빛”이 되고 주님을 “기쁘시게” 하는 삶을 살아갈 수 있게 하신 하나님을 찬양하십시오 (에베소서 5:8-10). 성령님이 그 작은 여우들을 잡을 수 있게 도와주십니다.

Catching Foxes

The first time a bat invaded our home we dismissed it as a fluke. But after a second nighttime visit, I read up on the little critters and discovered they don’t need much of an opening to pay humans a visit. In fact, if they find a gap as small as the side of a coin they’ll let themselves in.

So I loaded up my caulk gun and went on a mission. I went around the house and closed up every tiny opening I could find.

In Songs of Songs 2:15, Solomon mentions another troublesome mammal. He writes of the danger of “little foxes,” which can “ruin the vineyards.” Symbolically, he’s speaking of threats that can enter a relationship and ruin it. Now I don’t mean to offend bat-lovers or fox-lovers, but keeping bats out of the house and foxes out of the vineyard is a bit like dealing with sin in our lives (EPHESIANS 5:3). By the grace of God, the Holy Spirit works within us so that we don’t have to “live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (ROMANS 8:4). By the Spirit’s power we can resist the temptation to sin.

Praise God that, in Christ, we’re now “light in the Lord” and can live in a way that “pleases” Him (EPHESIANS 5:8–10). The Spirit helps us catch those little foxes. DAVE BRANON

반복해서 먹기

케리와 폴은 결혼했을 때 둘 다 요리를 할 줄 몰랐습니다. 하루는 케리가 스파게티를 직접 만들어보기로 했습니다. 그런데 너무 많이 만들다보니 스파게티를 다음날 저녁식사로 또 먹게 되었습니다. 셋째 날, 이번에는 폴이 나서서 했는데 큰 냄비 양만큼 하면 주말까지 먹을 수 있겠다는 생각에 파스타와 소스의 양을 두 배로 해서 요리했습니다. 그러나 그날 저녁 둘이 식사를 하려고 앉았다가 케리가 먼저 털어놓았습니다. “나 이젠 스파게티가 지겨워요.”

이스라엘 백성들처럼 40년이나 같은 음식만 먹는다고 한 번 상상해보십시오. 아침마다 그들은 하나님이 주신 감미로운 “최고급 음식”을 모아서 요리를 했습니다 (그 다음 날이 안식일이 아니면 음식을 남기지 않았습니다. 출애굽기 16:23-26). 아, 물론 재료를 가지고 굽기도 하고 끓이기도 하며 좋은 방법을 찾아 조리를 했지요(23절). 아, 그런데 백성들이 애굽에서 즐겼던 맛있는 음식들을 다시 그리워한 것입니다!(3절; 민수기 11:1-9). 처참한 노예생활의 대가로 얻은 음식이었는데도 말입니다!

우리 역시 사는 것이 옛날 같지 않다고 해서 원망할 때가 있을 것입니다. 아니면 살아가면서 “그날이 그날이라” 불만이 생겼을 수도 있습니다. 하지만 출애굽기 16장은 하나님이 이스라엘 백성들에게 신실하게 공급해주심으로 그들로 매일매일 하나님의 돌보심을 신뢰하고 의지하게 했던 이야기를 전해주고 있습니다.

하나님은 우리에게 필요한 것을 다 주시겠다고 약속하십니다. 그분은 우리가 간절히 원하는 것들을 충족시켜주시고 우리 영혼을 “좋은 것들”로 채워주십니다(시편 107:9).

Eat and Repeat

When Kerry and Paul got married, neither one knew how to cook. But one night Kerry decided to try her hand at spaghetti—making so much that the couple had it for dinner again the next day. On the third day, Paul volunteered to cook, doubling the amount of pasta and sauce, hoping the huge pot would last through the weekend. As the couple sat down for dinner that night, however, it was Kerry who confessed, “I’m sick of spaghetti.”

Just imagine eating the same meal as the Israelites did—for forty years. Each morning they gathered the sweet “super food” God supplied and cooked it (no leftovers unless the next day was the Sabbath, Exodus 16:23–26). Oh, sure, they got creative—baking it, boiling it (V. 23). But, oh, how they missed the good food they had enjoyed in Egypt (V. 3; NUMBERS 11:1–9), even though that nourishment had come at the high cost of cruelty and enslavement!

We too may sometimes resent that our life isn’t what it once was. Or perhaps the “sameness” of life has caused us to be discontent. But Exodus 16 tells of God’s faithful provision to the Israelites, causing them to trust and depend on His care each day.

God promises to give us everything we need. He satisfies our longings and fills up our soul with “good things” (PSALM 107:9 ESV). CINDY HESS KASPER

응급 치료

나는 공원 안내원을 따라가며 바하마 원시림 식물들에 관한 그의 설명을 받아 적었습니다. 그는 주의해야 할 나무들을 알려주며 말했습니다. 옻나무에서 분비되는 검은 수액은 아프고 가려운 발진을 일으킵니다. 그러나 걱정하지 마세요! 대개 바로 근처에서 해독제를 찾을 수 있습니다. “마닐라 엘레미 고무나무의 붉은 껍질을 벗겨 나오는 진액을 상처에 바르면 금방 나을 겁니다.”

나는 놀라서 연필을 떨어뜨릴 뻔 했습니다. 숲속에서 구원을 묘사한 그림을 마주하게 되리라고는 생각도 못했는데 그 고무나무에서 예수님을 본 것입니다. 예수님은 죄의 독성이 있는 곳은 어디든 바로 쓸 수 있는 응급 치료제입니다. 그 나무의 붉은 껍질처럼 예수님의 피가 치유해줍니다.

이사야 선지자는 인간에게 치유가 필요하다는 것을 알았습니다. 우리는 죄의 발진에 걸린 것입니다. 이사야는 “간고를 많이 겪으신 그분”이 우리의 아픔을 대신 지심으로 우리를 치유해주실 것이라고 약속했습니다(이사야 53:3). 그분이 바로 예수님이었습니다. 병든 우리를 대신하여 그리스도께서 우리 대신 기꺼이 상처를 입으셨습니다. 그분을 믿으면 우리의 죄의 병이 치유됩니다(5절). 치유 받은 자로서 우리의 죄를 깨닫고 새로운 신분에 맞게 죄를 멀리하는 삶을 사는 것을 배우는데 한평생이 걸릴지 모릅니다. 그러나 예수님 때문에 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

A Ready Remedy

Following the park guide, I scribbled notes as he taught about the plants of the Bahamian primeval forest. He told us which trees to avoid. The poisonwood tree, he said, secretes a black sap that causes a painful, itchy rash. But not to worry! The antidote could usually be found growing right next it. “Cut into the red bark of the gum elemi tree,” he said, “and rub the sap on the rash. It will immediately begin to heal.”

I nearly dropped my pencil in astonishment. I hadn’t expected to find a picture of salvation in the forest. But in the gum elemi tree, I saw Jesus. He’s the ready remedy wherever the poison of sin is found. Like the red bark of that tree, the blood of Jesus brings healing.

The prophet Isaiah understood that humanity needed healing. The rash of sin had infected us. Isaiah promised that our healing would come through “a man of suffering” who would take our sickness upon Himself (ISAIAH 53:3). That man was Jesus. We were sick, but Christ was willing to be wounded in our place. When we believe in Him, we are healed from the sickness of sin (V. 5). It may take a life-time to learn to live as those who’re healed—to recognize our sins and to reject them in favor of our new identity—but because of Jesus, we can. - AMY PETERSON

데이브는 자기 일을 즐기지만, 오랫동안 다른 어떤 것에 이끌리는 느낌을 받아왔습니다. 이제 그는 자신의 꿈을 이루기 위해 선교사역을 막 시작하려고 하고 있었습니다. 그런데 이상하게도 심각한 의심이 생기기 시작했습니다.

그는 친구에게 말했습니다. “난 자격이 없어. 선교위원회에서는 내가 어떤 사람인지 몰라. 난 아닌 것 같아.”

데이브에게는 제법 좋은 친구 그룹이 있습니다. 모세라는 이름을 언급할 때 우리는 지도력과 능력, 십계명 등을 생각하지만, 모세가 살인한 후 광야로 피신했던 사실은 쉽게 잊어버립니다. 그가 40년을 도망자로 살았다는 것도 무시하고, 화를 잘 내고 하나님께 ‘예’라고 말하기를 아주 꺼려했다는 사실도 간과합니다.

하나님이 나타나 이스라엘 백성을 인도해 내라는 명령을 내리시자(출애굽기 3:1-10) 모세는 자신은 부족한 사람이라고 말했습니다. 심지어 “내가 누구이기에......”(11절)라고 물으며 하나님과 긴 언쟁까지 하였습니다. 그러자 하나님은 모세에게 “나는 스스로 있는 자이니라”(14절)라고 ‘하나님 자신’을 드러내셨습니다. 우리가 이 신비스러운 이름을 설명하는 것은 불가능합니다. 우리가 말로 표현할 수 없는 하나님이 자신의 영원한 존재를 모세에게 설명하고 계시는 것이기 때문입니다.

우리가 자신의 약함을 느끼는 것은 건강한 것입니다. 그러나 그 약함을 하나님이 우리를 사용하지 못하도록 변명으로 사용한다면 그것은 하나님을 모욕하는 것입니다. 그렇게 말하는 것은 사실 ‘하나님’이 부족하다고 말하는 것이기 때문입니다.

문제는 ‘내가 누구인가?’가 아니라 ‘스스로 있는 자가 누구인가?’
하는 것입니다.

Who Am I?

Dave enjoyed his job, but for a long time he’d sensed a pull toward something else. Now he was about to fulfill his dream and step into mission work. But strangely, he began to have serious doubts. “I don’t deserve this,” he told a friend. “The mission board doesn’t know the real me. I’m not good enough.”

Dave has some pretty good company. Mention the name of Moses and we think of leadership, strength, and the Ten Commandments. We tend to forget that Moses fled to the desert after murdering a man. We lose sight of his forty years as a fugitive. We overlook his anger problem and his intense reluctance to say yes to God.

When God showed up with marching orders (EXODUS 3:1–10), Moses played the I’m-not-good-enough card. He even got into a lengthy argument with God, asking Him: “Who am I?” (V. 11).
Then God told Moses who He was: “ I AM WHO I AM ” (V. 14). It’s impossible for us to explain that mysterious name because our indescribable God is describing His eternal presence to Moses.

A sense of our own weaknesses is healthy. But if we use them as an excuse to keep God from using us, we insult Him. What we’re really saying is that God isn’t good enough.

“그냥 일터라고요?”

영국 북부의 랭커셔어에 있는 구릉진 푸른 산지를 바라보다가, 그 주변에 점점이 흩어져 있는 양들을 둘러싸고 있는 돌담이 있는 것을 보게 되었습니다. 맑은 하늘에 뭉게구름이 지나가고 있었고, 나는 그 광경에 완전히 취해 숨을 깊게 들이마셨습니다. 방문 중인 수양회관에서 일하는 여성에게 그 아름다운 경치에 대해 말했더니 그 여인은 이렇게 말했습니다. “사실은요, 여기 오시는 분들이 말해주기 전까지는 한 번도 그렇게 못 느꼈어요. 우리는 이곳에 오래 살고 있지만, 농사를 지을 때 이곳은 그냥 일터에 불과했어요!”

우리는 바로 앞에 놓여 있는 선물, 특히 일상의 한 부분을 이루고 있는 아름다운 것을 쉽게 지나칩니다. 매일 우리 안과 우리 주위에서 일하시는 하나님의 아름다운 모습 또한 쉽게 놓칩니다. 그러나 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 바울 사도가 에베소 성도들에게 보낸 편지에 쓴 것처럼, 하나님이 어떻게 일하시는지 알 수 있는 영적인 눈을 뜨게 해달라고 성령님께 간구할 수 있습니다. 바울은 그들이 주님을 잘 알도록 하나님께서 그들에게 지혜와 계시를
주시기를 간절히 바랐습니다(에베소서 1:17). 바울은 그들의 마음이 깨달아져 하나님이 주시는 소망과 약속하신 미래, 그리고 그분의 능력에 대해 알게 되기를 기도했습니다(18-19절).

우리는 하나님의 선물인 그리스도의 영을 통해 하나님이 우리 안에, 우리를 통해 일하시고 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 주님과 함께하면, 전에 “그냥 일터”로 보이던 것이 이제는 주님의 빛과 영광이 드러나는 곳으로 보일 수 있습니다.

“Just the Office”?

I gazed out at the rolling, green hills in Lancashire in northern England, noticing the stone fences enclosing some sheep dotted around the hills. Puffy clouds moved across the bright sky, and I inhaled deeply, drinking in the sight. When I remarked about the beautiful scene to the woman working at the retreat center I was visiting, she said, “You know, I never used to notice it before our guests would point it out. We’ve lived here for years; and when we were farmers, this was just the office!”

We can easily miss the gift of what’s right in front of us, especially beauty that’s part of our everyday lives. We can also easily miss the beautiful ways God works in and around us daily. But believers in Jesus can ask God’s Spirit to open our spiritual eyes so we can understand how He is at work, as the apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesian believers. Paul yearned that God would give them the wisdom and revelation to know Him better (EPHESIANS 1:17). He prayed that their hearts would be enlightened so that they’d know God’s hope, promised future, and power (VV. 18–19).

God’s gift of the Spirit of Christ can awaken us to His work in us and through us. With Him, what may have once seemed like “just the office” can be understood as a place that displays His light and glory. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
