진리, 쓸까요 달까요?

일 년 가까이 코에 있는 반점이 없어지지 않아 의사를 찾아갔습니다. 며칠 후에 조직검사 결과가 나왔는데 내가 듣고 싶지 않은 내용이었습니다. 피부암이었습니다. 이 암은 수술이 가능하고 생명에도 지장이 없는 것이지만 정말 견디기 어려웠습니다.

하나님은 에스겔에게 쓴 약, 곧 비통과 비애의 말이 기록된 두루마리를 삼키라고 명하셨습니다(에스겔 2:10; 3:1-2). 그는 “그 두루마리를 그의 배에 채워서” 하나님이 보시기에 “얼굴이 뻔뻔하고 마음이 굳은” 이스라엘 백성들에게 그 내용을 전해야 했습니다(2:4). 징계의 말로 가득 찬 그 두루마리는 맛이 쓴 약과 같을 거라고 생각되겠지만 에스겔은 그것이 그의 입에 “꿀같이 달았다”고 묘사하고 있습니다(3:3).

에스겔은 하나님의 징계의 맛을 터득했던 것 같습니다. 하나님의 질책을 피해야 할 것으로 여기지 않았던 에스겔은 영혼에 유익한 것은 “단맛이 난다”는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑으로 훈육하시고 바로잡아주시며, 그분을 영화롭게 하고 기쁘게 해드리는 삶을 살 수 있도록 도와주십니다.

삼키기에 쓴맛이 나는 진리가 있는가 하면 단맛이 나는 것도 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 얼마나 많이 사랑하시는지 기억한다면 그분의 진리는 꿀맛이 날 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀은 우리가 남을 용서하고 험담을 삼가며 부당한 처사를 견디게 해주는 지혜와 능력을 주는 등, 우리의 유익을 위해 주어졌습니다. 하나님, 하나님의 지혜가 참으로 단맛 나는 충고임을 알게 해주소서!

Truth: Bitter or Sweet?

I’d had the spot on my nose for the better part of a year when I went to the doctor. The biopsy results came back days later with words I didn’t want to hear: skin cancer. Though the cancer was operable and not life-threatening, it was a bitter pill to swallow.

God commanded Ezekiel to swallow a bitter pill—a scroll containing words of lament and woe (EZEKIEL 2:10; 3:1–2). He was “to fill [his] stomach with it” and share the words with the people of Israel, whom God considered “obstinate and stubborn” (2:4). One would expect a scroll filled with correction to taste like a bitter pill. Yet Ezekiel describes it being “as sweet as honey” in his mouth (3:3).

Ezekiel seems to have acquired a taste for God’s correction. Instead of viewing His rebuke as something to avoid, Ezekiel recognized that what is good for the soul is “sweet.” God instructs and corrects us with lovingkindness, helping us live in a way that honors and pleases Him.

Some truths are bitter pills to swallow while others taste sweet. If we remember how much God loves us, His truth will taste more like honey. His words are given to us for our good, providing wisdom and strength to forgive others, refrain from gossip, and bear up under mistreatment. Help us, God, to recognize your wisdom as the sweet counsel it truly is! KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

조용한 삶을 찾아

“너는 커서 무엇이 되고 싶니?” 우리가 어렸을 때, 그리고 어른이 되어서도 이따금 들었던 질문입니다. 이 질문은 호기심에서 비롯된 것이라 그 대답은 종종 미래의 꿈에 대한 말로 들립니다. 나의 대답은 시간이 지나면서 변했습니다. 카우보이로 시작해서 트럭 운전사로, 군인을 거쳐 대학에 들어가서는 의사가 되기로 했습니다. 그러나 누가 나에게 “조용한 삶”을 추구하는 것에 대해 얘기해주거나 내가 의식적으로 생각해본 적은 한 번도 없었습니다.

그러나 바울이 데살로니가교인들 에게 말한 것이 바로 그 점이었습니다. 우선 그는 서로 사랑하되 하나님의 가족은 특히 더 사랑하라고 권고했습니다(데살로니가전서 4:10). 그런 다음 특별한 어떤 일을 시작할 때에도 적용할 수 있는 일반적인 충고를 했습니다. “조용하게 살기를 힘쓰십시오”(11절, 새번역). 바울은 여기서 정확히 무엇을 말하려 했던 것일까요? 그는 “자기 일에 전념하고 자기 손으로 일하여” 외인들에 대해 품위 있게 살고 아무에게도 신세지지 말라고 분명하게 말했습니다(11-12절, 새번역). 우리는 자녀들이 타고난 재능이나 어떤 열정을 추구할 때 그것을 방해하고 싶지는 않겠지만, 무엇을 하더라도 조용한 마음으로 하라고 격려할 수는 있을 것입니다.

우리가 살고 있는 이 세상을 생각해볼 때 ‘야심 있다’는 말과 ‘조용하다’는 말은 크게 다르게 들립니다. 그러나 성경에는 항상 서로 관련이 있기 때문에 보다 조용히 살아간다는 것이 어떤 것인지 깊이 생각해보아야 합니다.

Finding a Quiet Life

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” We all heard that question as children and sometimes even as adults. The question is born in curiosity, and the answer is often heard as an indication of ambition. My answers morphed over the years, starting with a cowboy, then a truck driver, followed by a soldier, and I entered college set on becoming a doctor. However, I can’t recall one time that someone suggested or I consciously considered pursuing “a quiet life.”

Yet that’s exactly what Paul told the Thessalonians. First, he urged them to love one another and all of God’s family even more (1 THESSALONIANS 4:10). Then he gave them a general admonition that would cover whatever specific plow they put their hand to. “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life” (V. 11). Now what did Paul mean by that exactly? He clarified: “You should mind your own business and work with your hands” so outsiders respect you and you’re not a burden on anyone (VV. 11–12). We don’t want to discourage children from pursuing their giftedness or passions but maybe we could encourage them that whatever they choose to do, they do with a quiet spirit.

Considering the world we live in, the words ambitious and quiet couldn’t seem further apart. But the Scriptures are always relevant, so perhaps we should consider what it might look like to begin living quieter. JOHN BLASE

Jesus, living a quiet life sounds so inviting, but I know it won’t come easily. I ask for the grace to mind my own business, not so I can close myself off from the world, but that I won’t add to the noise.

건초더미에서 드린 기도

사무엘 밀즈와 그의 네 친구는 종종 모여 예수님의 복음을 전할 더 많은 사람들을 보내달라고 하나님께 기도했습니다. 1806년 어느 날 이들은 기도 모임을 마치고 돌아오다가 폭풍우를 만나 어느 건초더미로 대피했습니다. 그 후 그들의 주간 기도모임은 ‘건초더미 기도모임’으로 알려지게 되었고 세계선교 운동의 효시가 되었습니다. 오늘날 미국 윌리엄스 대학에 세워져 있는 건초더미 기도 기념비는 기도를 통해 하나님이 무엇을 하실 수 있는지를 생각나게 해줍니다.

우리 하나님 아버지는 자녀들이 공통된 기도제목을 가지고 오는 것을 기뻐하십니다. 그것은 같은 짐을 나누어지면서 한 마음으로 모이는 가족 모임과도 같습니다.

바울 사도는 모진 고난을 겪는 동안 하나님께서 다른 사람들의 기도를 통해 그를 어떻게 도와주셨는지를 인정합니다. “하나님이 우리를 앞으로도 건져주실 것입니다. 여러분도 기도로 우리를 도와주십시오”(고린도후서 1:10-11, 현대인의 성경). 하나님은 우리의 기도, 특히 우리가 함께 드리는 기도를 통해 이 세상에 그분의 일을 이루기를 원하십니다. 그래서 위의 구절이 다음과 같이 이어지는 것입니다. “그러면 많은 사람들의 기도에 대한 응답으로......많은 사람이 감사하게 될 것입니다.”

우리도 하나님의 선하심 안에서 함께 기뻐할 수 있도록 함께 기도하는 시간을 가집시다. 사랑의 하나님 아버지께서는 그분이 우리를 통해 여태껏 상상할 수 없었던 방법으로 일하실 수 있도록 우리가 그분께로 나아오기를 기다리고 계십니다.

Haystack Prayers

Samuel Mills and four of his friends often gathered together to pray for God to send more people to share the good news of Jesus. One day in 1806, after returning from their prayer meeting, they got caught in a thunderstorm and took refuge in a haystack. Their weekly prayer gathering then became known as the Haystack Prayer Meeting, which resulted in a global mission movement. Today the Haystack Prayer Monument stands at Williams College in the US as a reminder of what God can do through prayer.

Our heavenly Father is delighted when His children approach Him with a common request. It’s like a family gathering where they’re united in purpose, sharing a common burden.

The apostle Paul acknowledges how God helped him through the prayers of others during a time of severe suffering: “He will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers” (2 CORINTHIANS 1:10–11). God has chosen to use our prayers—especially our prayers together—to accomplish His work in the world. No wonder the verse continues: “Then many will give thanks . . . [for the] answer to the prayers of many.”

Let’s pray together so we can also rejoice together in God’s goodness. Our loving Father is waiting for us to come to Him so He can work through us in ways that reach far beyond anything we could ever imagine. POH FANG CHIA

노래로 강해지다

제2차 세계대전 때 프랑스 마을 사람들이 유대인 피난민들을 나치 사람들 모르게 숨겨놓고 마을 사람 몇 명이 마을을 둘러싸고 있는 울창한 숲 속에서 노래를 불러 숨어있는 사람들이 이제 나와도 안전하다는 것을 알려주었습니다. 르썅봉쉬르리뇽이라는 마을의 용감한 주민들이 그 마을의 목사 앙드레 뜨로끄메와 아내 마그다의 요청에 응하여 유대인들에게 “라몽따뉴 프로떼스땅 (개신교도의 산)”으로 알려진 바람이 세찬 고원에 전쟁 피난처를 제공해주었습니다. 그들의 음악 신호는 마을 사람들의 용기를 잘 보여준 한 예가 되었는데, 그것으로 거의 죽을 뻔했던 3천명에 가까운 유대인들을 구한 것입니다.

다윗도 그의 적 사울이 밤에 그의 집으로 암살단을 보냈던 위험한 때에 노래를 불렀습니다. 하지만 다윗의 노래는 신호로 사용된 것이 아니라 그의 피난처인 하나님께 감사하는 노래였습니다. 그는 이렇게 노래하며 기뻐했습니다. “나는 주의 힘을 노래하며 아침에 주의 인자하심을 높이 부르오리니 주는 나의 요새이시며 나의 환난 날에 피난처심이니이다”(시편 59:16).

이와 같은 노래는 위험할 때 보내는 “어둠 속의 신호”가 아닙니다. 그것보다는 다윗의 노래는 전능하신 하나님께 보내는 그의 신뢰였습니다. “하나님은 나의 요새이시며 나를 긍휼히 여기시는 하나님이심이니이다”(17절).

다윗의 찬양과 르 썅봉 마을 주민들의 노래는 우리에게 삶의 근심 걱정이 있더라도 오늘 하나님께 노래로 그분을 찬미하라고 권유합니다. 우리가 그렇게 할 때 사랑으로 함께하시는 하나님께서 응답하셔서 우리 마음을 강하게 해주실 것입니다.

Strengthened in Song

When French villagers helped Jewish refugees hide from the Nazis during World War II, some sang songs in the dense forest surrounding their town—letting the refugees know it was safe to come out from hiding. These brave townspeople of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon had answered the call of local pastor André Trocmé and his wife, Magda, to offer wartime refuge to Jews on their windswept plateau known as “La Montagne Protestante.” Their musical signal became just one feature of the villagers’ bravery that helped save up to 3,000 Jews from almost certain death.

In another dangerous time, David sang when his enemy Saul sent nighttime assassins to his house. His use of music wasn’t a signal; rather, it was his song of gratitude to God his refuge. David rejoiced, “I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble” (PSALM 59:16).

Such singing isn’t “whistling in the dark” during danger. Instead, David’s singing conveyed his trust in almighty God. “You, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely” (V. 17).

David’s praise, and the villagers’ singing in Le Chambon, offer an invitation to bless God today with our singing, making melody to Him despite the worries of life. His loving presence will respond, strengthening our hearts. PATRICIA RAYBON

기다릴 만한 일

도쿄의 시부야 기차역 바깥에 하치코라는 이름의 아키타 품종 개를 기념하는 동상이 있습니다. 하치코는 매일 이 역에서 통근하는 대학 교수인 자기 주인에게 보기 드문 충성심을 가졌던 개로 기억되고 있습니다. 그 개는 매일 아침 주인과 같이 역까지 걸어갔고 오후에는 매번 열차가 도착하는 바로 그 시간에 그를 만나러 역으로 다시 나갔습니다.

그런데 어느 날 교수가 역에 돌아오지 않았습니다. 안타깝게도 근무하던 중에 죽은 것입니다. 그럼에도 하치코는 그의 남은 생애 9년 이상 동안 오후 열차가 도착하는 바로 그 시간에 계속 나타났습니다. 날씨에 관계없이 개는 매일 매일 충성스럽게 주인의 귀가를 기다렸습니다.

바울은 데살로니가교인들에게 그들의 “믿음의 역사,” “사랑의 수고,” “주 예수 그리스도에 대한 소망의 인내”(데살로니가전서 1:3)를 언급하며 그들의 충성스러움을 칭찬했습니다. 그들은 가혹한 반대에도 불구하고 옛날 방식을 버리고 “살아 계시고 참되신 하나님을 섬기고......그의 아들이 하늘로부터 강림하실 것을 기다렸습니다”(9-10절).

이 초기의 신자들은 그들의 구주와 그들을 향한 구주의 사랑 안에서 살아 있는 소망을 가지고 어려움을 극복하며 믿음을 열심히 전할 수 있었습니다. 예수님을 위해 사는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없다는 것을 그들은 확신했습니다. 그들에게 큰 힘이 되어 주신 바로 그 성령님이(5절) 오늘도 여전히 우리에게 능력 주셔서 예수님이 다시 오시기를 기다리는 동안 그를 충성스럽게 섬길 수 있게 해주시니 얼마나 좋은지 모르겠습니다.

Worth the Wait

Outside the Shibuya train station in Tokyo is a statue commemorating an Akita dog named Hachiko. Hachiko is remembered for unusual faithfulness to his owner, a university professor who commuted from the station daily. The dog accompanied him on his walk there in the morning and came back to meet him every afternoon just as his train arrived.

One day the professor didn’t return to the station; sadly, he’d died at work. But for the rest of his life—more than nine years—Hachiko showed up at the same time as the afternoon train. Day after day, regardless of weather, the dog waited faithfully for his master’s return.

Paul commended the Thessalonians for their faithfulness, citing their “work produced by faith,” “labor prompted by love,” and “endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 THESSALONIANS 1:3). Despite harsh opposition, they left their old ways “to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven” (VV. 9–10).

These early believers’ vital hope in their Savior and His love for them inspired them to see beyond their difficulties and to share their faith enthusiastically. They were assured there was nothing better than living for Jesus. How good it is to know that the same Holy Spirit who emboldened them (V. 5) still empowers us today to faithfully serve Jesus as we await His return. JAMES BANKS

이름을 써넣으세요

‘하나님이 보내신 사랑의 편지’에서 글레니스 넬리스트는 어린이들에게 하나님과 개인적으로 깊이 소통해보라고 권하고 있습니다. 이 어린이 책에는 각 성경 이야기가 끝날 때마다 하나님에게서 온 짤막한 편지가 있는데 거기에는 아이의 이름을 써 넣는 빈 칸이 있습니다. 이 책을 읽는 어린이들이 성경의 진리를 개인적인 것으로 받아들이게 함으로써 성경이 단순한 이야기책이 아니라는 것을 알도록 도와주는 것입니다. 아이들은 책을 읽으면서 주님이 자기들과 사귀기를 원하신다는 것과 그가 성경말씀을 통하여 무척이나 사랑하시는 아이들에게 이야기하고 계시다는 것을 배워갑니다.

조카에게 주려고 이 책을 사서는 하나님에게서 온 모든 편지들의 시작 부분에 있는 빈 칸에 조카의 이름을 써넣었습니다. 조카는 자기 이름을 알아보고 기뻐하며 말했습니다. “하나님은 나도 사랑하시네요!” 사랑의 창조주께서 우리를 개인적으로 깊고도 완전하게 사랑하신다는 것을 알게 되니 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다.

하나님은 이사야 선지자를 통해 이스라엘 백성들에게 직접 말씀하시면서 하늘나라에 대해 더 관심을 갖게 하셨습니다. 하나님은 “별무리”(이사야 40:26, 현대인의 성경)를 다스리시고 별 하나하나의 가치를 정하시며 각각의 별을 사랑으로 이끄신다고 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 또한 그 백성들에게 어떤 별 하나도, 그리고 미리 정하신 목적대로 무한한 사랑으로 빚으신 소중한 자녀 누구 하나도 잊어버리거나 잃어버리지 않으시겠다고 확실히 말씀하셨습니다.

성경에 나타난 전능하신 주님의 친숙한 약속과 선포된 사랑을 찬양하면서 우리도 우리 이름을 써넣을 수 있습니다. 우리도 믿으며 어린 아이 같이 기쁜 마음으로 이렇게 외칠 수 있습니다. “하나님은 나도 사랑하시네요!”

Fill in Your Name

In Love Letters from God, Glenys Nellist invites children to interact with the Lord in a deeply personal way. These children’s books include a note from God with a space for the child’s name to be inserted after each Bible story. Personalizing scriptural truth helps her young readers understand that the Bible isn’t just a storybook. They’re being taught that the Lord wants a relationship with them and that He speaks to His greatly loved children through the Scriptures.

I bought the book for my nephew and filled in the blanks in the beginning of every note from God. Delighted when he recognized his name, my nephew said, “God loves me too!” What a comfort to know the deeply and completely personal love of our loving Creator.

When God spoke to the Israelites directly through the prophet Isaiah, He called their attention to the heavens. The Lord affirmed that He controls “the starry host” (ISAIAH 40:26), determines each star’s individual value, and directs each one with love. He assured His people that He won’t forget or lose one star . . . or one beloved child that He’s sculpted with deliberate purpose and endless love.

As we celebrate our Almighty Lord’s intimate promises and proclamations of love within Scripture, we can fill in our names. We can trust and declare with childlike delight, “God loves me too!” XOCHITL DIXON

주연 배우

어느 이름 있는 신학교에서 설교학 수업을 듣던 한 학생에 관하여 들은 적이 있습니다. 어느 정도 자신만만했던 이 젊은이는 유창하고도 아주 열정적인 설교를 하고 만족해하며 자리에 앉았습니다. 교수가 잠시 뜸을 들이더니 이렇게 평을 했습니다. “아주 힘 있는 설교였네. 잘 정리되었고 감동적이었네. 그런데 한 가지 문제는 하나님이 주어로 등장하는 문장이 하나도 없다는 거네.”

그 교수는 우리 모두가 가끔씩 고심하는 문제 한 가지를 강조한 것입니다. 그 문제는 하나님이 사실 우리 삶의 주연 배우이신데도 (우리가 하는 일과 말을 앞세워) 우리가 마치 주연 배우인 것처럼 얘기할 수 있다는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님께서 어떻게든 모든 일을 “주관하신다”고 종종 고백하면서도 마치 모든 결과가 우리 손에 달려 있는 것처럼 행동합니다.

하나님이 우리 삶의 참된 주체시요 진정한 힘이심을 성경은 강조하고 있습니다. 반드시 필요한 우리 믿음의 행위까지도 “여호와의 이름으로,” 곧 주님의 능력으로 행해집니다(시편 118:10-11). 하나님이 우리를 구원하시기로 결정하시고, 우리를 구하시고, 우리 필요를 채워주십니다. “이는 여호와께서 행하신 것입니다”(23절).

그러므로 이제 압박은 없습니다. 초조해 하고, 남들과 비교하고, 무리하게 애쓰면서 걱정을 사서 할 필요가 없습니다. 하나님이 책임져 주십니다. 우리는 다만 그분의 인도하심을 믿고 순종하며 따라가기만 하면 됩니다.

The Main Actor

I once heard about a student taking a class in preaching at a prominent seminary. The student, a young man who was a bit full of himself, delivered his sermon with eloquence and evident passion. He sat down self-satisfied, and the professor paused a moment before responding. “That was a powerful sermon,” he said. “It was well organized and moving. The only problem is that God was not the subject of a single one of your sentences.”

The professor highlighted a problem all of us struggle with at times: We can talk as if we’re the primary actor (emphasizing what we do, what we say) when in truth God is the primary actor in life. We often profess that God is somehow generally “in charge,” but we act as if all the outcomes depend on us.

The Scriptures insist that God is the true subject of our lives, the true force. Even our necessary acts of faith are done “in the name of the LORD ”—in the Lord’s power (PSALM 118:10–11). God enacts our salvation. God rescues us. God tends to our needs. “The LORD has done this” (V. 23).

So the pressure’s off. We don’t need to fret, compare, work with compulsive energy, or feed our many anxieties. God is in charge. We need only trust and follow His lead in obedience. WINN COLLIER

잊지 마세요!

나는 조카딸과 조카의 네 살 난 딸 케일린과 함께 토요일 오후를 재미있게 보냈습니다. 밖에서 비눗방울도 불고, 공주 그림책에 색칠도 하고, 피넛 버터와 젤리 샌드위치도 먹었습니다. 그들이 차를 타고 떠나려 할 때 케일린이 열린 창문을 통해 사랑스런 목소리로 소리쳤습니다. “앤 이모, 나 잊으면 안 돼.” 나는 곧바로 차로 다가가 속삭여주었습니다. “너를 절대 잊지 못하지. 곧 다시 만나. 약속할게.”

사도행전 1장에서 제자들은 예수님이 “그들이 보는데 올려져” 하늘로 가시는 것을 지켜보았습니다(9절). 나는 제자들이 주님께서 그들을 잊어버리시지는 않을까 하는 생각을 하지 않았을까 궁금합니다. 그러나 예수님은 성령님을 보내어 그들 안에 거하게 하시고 앞으로 닥칠 박해를 이겨낼 능력을 주시겠다고 바로 전에 약속해주셨습니다(8절). 그리고 주님은 그들이 거할 처소를 마련하러 가셔서 다시 돌아와 그들을 데리고 가서 함께 지내시겠다고 일러주셨습니다(요한복음 14:3). 그럼에도 제자들은 얼마나 오래 기다려야 할지 분명 궁금해 했을 것입니다. 어쩌면 이렇게 말하고 싶었을지도 모릅니다. “예수님, 저희들을 잊지 마세요.”

예수님은 성령님을 통해 그를 믿는 사람들 안에 거하십니다. 우리도 예수님이 언제 다시 오셔서 우리와 그의 창조물들을 완전히 회복시키실지 궁금할 때가 있습니다. 하지만 그 일은 분명히 일어납니다. 예수님은 우리를 잊지 않으십니다. “그러므로 피차 권면하고 서로 덕을 세우십시오”(데살로니가전서 5:10-11).

Don’t Forget!

My niece, her four-year-old daughter Kailyn, and I had a wonderful Saturday afternoon together. We enjoyed blowing bubbles outside, coloring in a princess coloring book, and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. When they got in the car to leave, Kailyn sweetly called out the opened window, “Don’t forget me, Auntie Anne.” I quickly walked toward the car and whispered, “I could never forget you. I promise I will see you soon.”

In Acts 1, the disciples watched as Jesus was “taken up before their very eyes” into the sky (V. 9). I wonder if they thought they might be forgotten by their Master. But He’d just promised to send
His Spirit to live in them and empower them to handle the persecution that was to come (V. 8). And He’d taught them He was going away to prepare a place for them and would come back and take them to be with Him (JOHN 14:3). Yet they must have wondered how long they would have to wait. Perhaps they wanted to say, “Don’t forget us, Jesus!”

For those of us who have put our faith in Jesus, He lives in us through the Holy Spirit. We still may wonder when He will come again and restore us and His creation fully. But it will happen—He won’t forget us. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:10–11). ANNE CETAS

견뎌내어라

얼마 전에 장인의 일흔여덟 번째 생신을 축하하여 가족들이 모였는데 그 자리에서 누군가가 장인에게 물어보았습니다. “지금까지 살아오시면서 터득하신 것 중 가장 중요한 것이 무엇인가요?” 뭐라고 대답하셨을까요? 그의 대답은 “견뎌내어라”였습니다.

‘견뎌내어라.’ 그저 지극히 단순한 말로 넘길 수도 있겠지만 장인은 맹목적인 낙 관 주 의 나 긍 정 적 인 사고방식을 말하려는 것이 아니었습니다. 그는 팔십 년 가까이 어려운 일들을 견뎌내셨습니다. 그가 계속 밀고 나가기로 결심한 것은 상황이 좋아질 거라는 어떤 막연한 바람에 근거한 것이 아니라 예수님이 그의 삶 속에 역사하신다는 데서 나온 것이었습니다.

“견뎌내어라.” 성경에 인내라고 표현 되어 있는 이 말은 단순한 의지력만으로는 되지 않습니다. 우리가 견뎌낼 수 있는 것은 하나님이 우리와 함께하시고 힘을 주시고 우리 삶 속에 그분이 목적하신 바를 이루시겠다고 계속해서 약속하셨기 때문입니다. 그것은 하나님이 이사야를 통해 이스라엘 백성에게 주신 메시지이기도 합니다. “두려워하지 말라 내가 너와 함께 함이라 놀라지 말라 나는 네 하나님이 됨이라 내가 너를 굳세게 하리라 참으로 너를 도와주리라 참으로 나의 의로운 오른손으로 너를 붙들리라”(이사야 41:10).

어떻게 하면 “견뎌낼” 수 있을까요? 이사야는 소망의 근거가 하나님의 성품에 있다고 하였습니다. 하나님의 선하심을 깨달으면 우리는 두려움의 고삐에서 풀려나 하나님과 그분의 약속에 매달릴 수 있습니다. 하나님은 매일 우리에게 필요한 힘과 도움을 주시고, 우리와 함께 하여 위로하시고 능력주시며 붙들어주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

Hang in There

My father-in-law turned seventy-eight recently, and during our family gathering to honor him, someone asked him, “What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in your life so far?” His answer? “Hang in there.”

Hang in there. It might be tempting to dismiss those words as simplistic. But my father-in-law wasn’t promoting blind optimism or positive thinking. He’s endured tough things in his nearly eight decades. His determination to press on wasn’t grounded in some vague hope that things might get better, but in Christ’s work in his life.

“Hanging in there”—the Bible calls it perseverance—isn’t possible through mere willpower. We persevere because God promised, over and over, that He’s with us, that He’ll give us strength, and that He’ll accomplish His purposes in our lives. That’s the message He spoke to the Israelites through Isaiah: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (ISAIAH 41:10).

What does it take to “hang in there”? According to Isaiah, the foundation for hope is God’s character. Knowing God’s goodness allows us to release our grip on fear so we can cling to the Father and His promise that He will provide what we need each day: strength, help, and God’s comforting, empowering, and upholding presence. 폭풍 가운데 피난처

전해오는 이야기에 따르면 1763년에 한 젊은 목사가 영국 서머셋에 있는 벼랑길을 따라 가던 중 번쩍이는 번개와 퍼붓는 비를 피하려고 동굴 안으로 급히 피했습니다. 그는 체다 협곡을 내다보며 피난처를 찾게 해주신 은혜와 하나님 안에서의 평화에 관해 깊이 생각해 보았습니다. 거기서 기다리는 동안 그는 “만세반석 열리니” 라는 찬송가 곡을 썼습니다. 그 잊을 수 없는 첫 구절은 이렇습니다. “만세반석 열리니 내가 들어갑니다.”

아우구스투스 탑레이디가 그 찬송가 를 쓰면서 모세가 바위틈에서 겪은 일 (출애굽기 33:22)을 생각했는지는 알 수 없지만 아마도 그랬을 것 같습니다. 출애굽기에는 모세가 하나님의 위안과 응답을 구하는 내용이 들어있습니다. 모세가 하나님의 영광을 보여주기를 간구하자 하나님은 “나를 보고 살 자가 없음이니라”(20절)고 친절하게 응답하시며 모세를 지나가실 때 그를 바위틈에 넣으시고 그분의 등만 보게 하셨습니다. 모세는 그 일로 하나님이 그와 함께 계시다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

하나님께서 모세에게 “내가 친히 가리라”(14절)고 말씀하셨듯이, 우리 또한 하나님 안에서 피난처를 찾을 수 있음을 믿어야 합니다. 모세와 위 이야기 속의 영국 목사처럼 우리도 삶 속에서 많은 폭풍을 만날 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께 부르짖을 때 하나님은 그분의 임재에서 오는 평안을 우리에게 주실 것입니다.

Shelter from the Storm

As the story goes, in 1763, a young minister, traveling on a cliffside road in Somerset, England, ducked into a cave to escape the flashes of lightning and pounding rain. As he looked out at Cheddar Gorge, he pondered the gift of finding shelter and peace in God. Waiting there, he began to write a hymn, “Rock of Ages,” with its memorable opening lines: “Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.”

We don’t know if Augustus Toplady thought about Moses’s experience in the cleft of a rock while writing the hymn (EXODUS 33:22), but perhaps he did. The Exodus account tells of Moses seeking God’s reassurance and God’s response. When Moses asked God to reveal His glory to him, God answered graciously, knowing that “no one may see me and live” (V. 20). He tucked Moses into the rocks when He passed by, letting Moses only see His back. And Moses knew that God was with him.

We can trust that just as God said to Moses, “My Presence will go with you” (V. 14), so too we can find refuge in Him. We may experience many storms in our lives, as did Moses and the English minister in the story, but when we cry out to Him, He will give us the peace of His presence. AMY BOUCHER PYE
