감금 중에 지킨 믿음

1948년 어느 이른 아침 초인종이 울렸을 때 하랄란 포포프는 자신의 인생이 어떤 전기를 맞을지 전혀 몰랐습니다. 아무런 예고도 없이 불가리아 경찰이 신앙을 이유로 그를 감옥으로 끌고 간 것입니다. 그는 기도로 힘과 용기를 구하며 철창에 갇혀 13년을 보냈습니다. 처참한 대우를 받으면서도 포포프는 하나님이 자기와 함께 하신다는 것을 알았고, 다른 죄수들에게 예수님의 복음을 전하여 많은 사람들이 믿게 되었습니다.

창세기 37장을 보면, 화가 난 형들이 요셉을 무자비하게 상인들에게 팔고 그 상인들이 요셉을 애굽으로 데려가 또다시 애굽 관리 보디발에게 팔았을 때, 요셉도 앞으로 자신에게 어떤 일이 일어날지 전혀 몰랐습니다. 이제 요셉은 수많은 신을 믿는 사람들이 사는 문화권에 던져졌습니다. 엎친 데 덮친 격으로 보디발의 아내가 요셉을 유혹하려 했습니다. 요셉이 이를 여러 차례 거절하자 그녀는 그에게 누명을 씌워 감옥에 보냈습니다(39:16-20). 그러나 하나님은 요셉을 버리지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 요셉과 함께 하셨을 뿐 아니라, “그의 범사에 형통하게 하셨으며” “그에게 인자를 더하시고” 권력자들에게 “은혜를 받게”까지 하셨습니다(39:3,21).

요셉이 느꼈을 두려움을 한 번 상상해보십시오. 그럼에도요셉은 변함없이 신실했고 자신의 도덕적 원칙을 지켜나갔습니다. 하나님은 요셉의 힘든 여정 속에서도 그와 함께 하셨고 그를 위한 종합기본계획도 갖고 계셨습니다. 하나님은 당신을 위한 계획도 마음에 두고 계십니다. 하나님께서 보고 알고 계신다는 사실을 믿고 힘내어 믿음의 길을 걸어가십시오.

Faithful in Captivity

Haralan Popov had no idea what turn his life would take when the doorbell rang early one morning in 1948. Without any warning, the Bulgarian police took Haralan away to prison because of his faith. He spent the next thirteen years behind bars, praying for strength and courage. Despite horrible treatment, he knew God was with him, and he shared the good news of Jesus with fellow prisoners—and many believed.

In the account from Genesis 37, Joseph had no idea what would happen to him after he was mercilessly sold by his angry brothers to merchants who took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, an Egyptian official. He found himself in a culture surrounded by people who believed in thousands of gods. To make things worse, Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph. When Joseph refused repeatedly, she falsely accused him, leading to his being sent to prison (39:16–20). Yet God did not abandon him. Not only was He with Joseph, but He also “gave him success in everything he did” and even “showed him kindness and granted him favor” with those in authority (39:3, 21).

Imagine the fear Joseph must have felt. But he remained faithful and kept his integrity. God was with Joseph in his difficult journey and had a master plan for him. He has a plan in mind for you too. Take heart and walk in faith, trusting He sees and He knows. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

주님은 결코 늦지 않으신다

장모님께 심장마비가 와서 불안했지만 다행히 즉시 치료를 받을 수 있었습니다. 나중에 담당의사는 심장마비가 왔을때 15분 이내에 치료를 받으면 중환자의 경우 생존율이 33퍼센트지만 그 시간을 넘기면 5퍼센트 밖에 되지 않는다고 말했습니다.

예수님이 중병에 걸린 야이로의 딸 (분명 응급치료가 필요한 사람)을 고치러 가던 중 상상도 못할 행동을 하셨습니다. 가시던 길을 잠시 멈추어 서신 것입니다 (마가복음 5:30). 주님은 멈추어 자기에게 손 댄 사람이 누구인지를 아시고는 그 여인에게 다정하게 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 야이로가 이 때 무슨 생각을 하고 있었을지 그려볼 수 있습니다. ‘내 딸이 죽어가고 있는데 이럴 시간이 어디 있어!’ 그때 야이로에게 최악의 두려움이 현실이 되었습니다. 예수님이 너무 오래 지체하시는 바람에 야이로의 딸이 그만 죽어버린 것입니다(35절).

그러나 예수님은 야이로를 보시고 격려의 말씀을 하셨습니다. “두려워하지 말고 믿기만 하라”(36절). 그러신 다음 예수님은 구경꾼들의 야유를 태연하게 무시하시면서 야이로의 딸에게 말을 걸었습니다. 그러자 딸이 다시 살아났습니다! 주님은 자신이 결코 늦지 않는다는 사실을 보여주신 것입니다. 주님은 그분이 하실 수 있는 일을 하시려고 할 때 시간에 제약 받지 않으십니다.

우리도 야이로처럼 하나님께서 너무 늦어서 우리가 바라는 일을 이루지 못하시는 것이 아닌가 조바심할 때가 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다. 하지만 하나님께 그런 일은 절대로 없습니다. 하나님은 우리의 삶속에서 그분의 선하시고 자비로운 일을 이루시는데 결코 늦지 않으십니다.

Never Too Late

During the anxious moments that followed my motherinlaw’s heart attack, she was fortunate to receive immediate medical care. Later, her doctor told me that treatment within fifteen minutes of a heart attack results in a survival rate of 33 percent for critical patients. But just 5 percent survive if treated beyond that time frame.

On the way to heal Jairus’s desperately ill daughter (someone definitely needing immediate medical care), Jesus did the unthinkable: He paused (MARK 5:30). He stopped to identify who touched Him, and then spoke gently with the woman. You can imagine what Jairus was thinking: There’s no time for this, my daughter is dying! And then, his worst fears came true—Jesus appeared to have delayed too long and his daughter passed away (V 35).

But Jesus turned to Jairus and offered a word of encouragement: “Don’t be afraid; just believe” (V 36). Then, calmly ignoring the mockery of onlookers, Christ spoke to Jairus’s daughter and she came back to life! He revealed that He can never be too late. Time can’t limit what He’s able to do and when He chooses to do it.

How often do we feel like Jairus, thinking that God was simply too late to accomplish what we had hoped for. But with God, there’s no such thing. He’s never too late in fulfilling His good and merciful work in our lives. - PETER CHIN

개인지도 학습

여섯 살 난 아들 오웬이 새 보드게임을 받고 매우 신이 났습니다. 그런데 반시간 동안이나 게임 규칙을 읽고 나더니 실망스러워했습니다. 게임을 어떻게 하는 건지 전혀 이해할 수 없었던 것입니다. 나중에 게임하는 법을 이미 알고 있는 친구가 찾아와서야 아들은 비로소 그가 받은 선물을 즐길 수 있었습니다.

아이들이 노는 것을 지켜보면서 뭐든지 새로운 것을 배울 때 경험 많은 선생이 있다면 훨씬 더 쉬울 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 무언가를 배울 때 설명서가 도움이 되기는 하지만, 실제로 사용법을 보여줄 수 있는 친구가 있는 것과는 아주 큰 차이가 있습니다.

바울 사도 역시 이것을 알고 있었습니다. 디도에게 보낸 편지에서 바울은 교회가 믿음 안에서 성장하려면 신앙의 모범이 될 수 있는 경험 많은 성도들이 얼마나 소중한가를 강조하고 있습니다. 물론 “건전한 교리”를 가르치는 것이 중요하지만, 그것은 말로 가르치는 것이 아니라 삶으로 보여줘야 하는 것입니다. 그래서 바울은 나이든 사람들은 자제할 줄 알고 친절해야 하며 사랑하는 마음을 가져야 한다고 말합니다 (디도서 2:2-5). 이어서 “범사에 네 자신이 선한 일의 본을 보이라”(7절)고 했습니다.

나는 제대로 된 가르침을 받은 것에 감사합니다. 그러나 또한 개인지도 선생님이 되어준 많은 분들에게도 감사한 마음을 갖고 있습니다. 그들은 그리스도의 제자가 되는 것이 어떤 것인지 자신들의 삶을 통해 보여주었고, 나 또한 그 길을 걸어갈때 어떻게 해야 하는지 더 쉽게 알 수 있었습니다.

Hands-On Learning

My six-year-old son, Owen, was thrilled to receive a new board game. But after a half hour reading the rules, he was frustrated. He couldn’t quite figure out how it worked. It wasn’t until later, when a friend came over who already knew how to play, that Owen finally got to enjoy his present.

Watching them play, I was reminded of how much easier it is to learn something new if you have an experienced teacher. When we’re learning, reading the instructions helps, but having a friend who can demonstrate makes a huge difference.

The apostle Paul understood this too. Writing to Titus about how he could help his church grow in faith, Paul emphasized the value of experienced believers who could model Christian faith. Of course teaching “sound doctrine” was important, but it didn’t just need to be talked about—it needed to be lived out. Paul wrote that older men and women ought to be selfcontrolled, kind, and loving (TITUS 2:2–5). “In everything,” he said, “set them an example by doing what is good” (V 7).

I’m thankful for solid teaching, but I’m also thankful for the many people who have been handson teachers. They’ve shown me by their lives what it looks like to be a disciple of Christ and have made it easier for me to see how I can walk that path too. - AMY PETERSON

누구지?

남편과 함께 신혼여행에서 집으로 돌아올 때, 공항에서 짐을 부치려고 기다리고 있었습니다. 나는 남편을 팔꿈치로 쿡 찌르면서 조금 떨어져 있는 한 남자를 가리켰습니다.

남편이 곁눈질을 하더니 “누구지?”라고 물었습니다.

나는 들뜬 마음으로 남편에게 그 배우가 맡았던 잘 알려진 배역들을 대충 얘기해준 다음, 그쪽으로 걸어가서 우리 부부와 같이 사진을 찍자고 했습니다. 24년이 지났지만, 나는 아직도 영화배우를 만났던 그날의 이야기를 즐겨 꺼내곤 합니다.

유명한 영화배우를 알아본 일과는 별개로, 내게는 개인적으로 알고 있는 것을 감사하게 여기는 더 소중한 분이 있습니다. “영광의 왕이 누구시냐”(시편 24:8). 바로 시편 기자 다윗이 가리키고 있는 만물의 창조주이시고 관리자이자
통치자이신 전능하신 하나님이십니다. 다윗은 노래합니다. “땅과 거기에 충만한 것과 세계와 그 가운데에 사는 자들은 다 여호와의 것이로다 여호와께서 그 터를 바다 위에 세우심이여 강들 위에 건설하셨도다”(1-2절). 말할 수 없는 경외감에 싸여 다윗은 만물 위에 뛰어나면서도 친근하게 다가갈 수 있는 하나님을 노래한 것입니다(3-4절). 하나님을 위해 살아갈 때 우리는 그분을 알 수 있고, 그분으로 인해 능력을 힘입을 수 있으며, 우리를 대신해서 싸우시는 그분을 믿고 맡길 수 있습니다(8절).

하나님은 그분만이 다른 사람들에게 전할 가치가 있는, 단 하나 뿐인 유명한 존재라는 것을 알릴 기회를 우리에게 주셨습니다. 하나님의 특성을 생각해볼 때, 하나님을 알지 못하는 사람들은 “누구지?”라고 물을 많은 이유가 있을 수 있습니다. 우리도 다윗처럼 말할 수 없는 경외감에 싸여 주님을 가리키며 그분의 이야기를 해줄 수 있습니다!

Who Is He?

On our way home from our honeymoon, my husband and I waited to check in our luggage at the airport. I nudged him and pointed to a man standing a few feet away.

My spouse squinted. “Who is he?”

I excitedly rattled off the actor’s most notable roles, then walked up and asked him to take a photo with us. Twentyfour years later, I still enjoy sharing the story of the day I met a movie star.

Recognizing a famous actor is one thing, but there’s Someone more important I’m thankful to know personally. “Who is this King of glory?” (PSALM 24:8). The psalmist David points to the Lord Almighty as Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all. He sings, “The earth is the Lord’ s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters” (VV 1–2). In awestruck wonder, David proclaims God is above all, yet intimately approachable (VV 3–4). We can know Him, be empowered by Him, and trust Him to fight on our behalf, as we live for Him (V 8).

God provides opportunities for us to declare Him as the only Famous One truly worth sharing with others. As we reflect His character, those who don’t recognize Him can have more reasons to ask, “Who is He?” Like David, we can point to the Lord with awestruck wonder and tell His story! - XOCHITL DIXON

현명한 도움

빨간불이 켜져 차를 멈췄을 때, 같은 사람이 길가에 또 서 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그가 들고 있는 마분지 표지판에는 ‘음식 살 돈이 필요합니다. 뭐든지 도와주십시오.’라고 쓰여 있었습니다. 나는 시선을 돌리고는 한숨을 쉬었습니다. 내가 도움이 필요한 사람을 외면하는 그런 사람이었나?

도움이 필요한 척하지만 실제로는 놀고먹는 사람들이 있습니다. 진정 도움이 필요하지만 자기 파괴적인 습관을 고치는데 어려움을 겪는 사람들도 있습니다. 사회복지사들은 도시에서 구제사역을 하는 기관에 돈을 기부하는 것이 더 낫다고 말합니다. 나는 침을 꿀꺽 삼키고 그냥 차를 몰아 지나갔습니다. 기분이 좋지는 않았지만, 어쩌면 현명하게 행동한 것인지도 모릅니다.

하나님은 우리에게 “게으른 자들을 권계하며 마음이 약한 자들을 격려하고 힘이 없는 자들을 붙들어 주라”(데살로니가전서 5:14)고 명령하십니다. 이 명령을 잘 이행하기 위해서는 누가 어떤 종류의 사람인지를 알아야만 합니다. 힘이 없거나 마음 약한 사람을 훈계한다면 어쩌면 그 사람을 절망케 할지도 모릅니다. 게으른 사람을 도와준다면 게으름을 더 부추길 수도 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 가까이에서 어떤 사람이 무엇이 필요한지 잘 알고 도와줄 때 가장 잘 도울 수 있습니다.

하나님께서 누구를 도와주라고 마음의 부담을 주신 적이 있습니까? 그렇다면 좋습니다! 지금이 바로 시작할 때입니다. 그 사람이 무엇이 필요한지 내가 다 알고 있다고 생각지 마십시오. 그 사람에게 물어보고 사정 이야기를 들으십시오. 기도하는 마음으로 베풀되 단지 내가 기분이 더 좋아졌다는 느낌으로 하지 말고 가능한 한 지혜롭게 했다는 생각을 가지고 하십시오. 우리가 진심으로 “모든 사람들을 위해 언제나 선을 추구”할 때, 그들이 비틀거릴 때라도 더욱 더 “모든 사람들을 인내로 대할” 수 있게 될 것입니다(14-15절, 현대인의 성경).

Wise Aid

As I stopped my car at a red light, I saw the same man standing beside the road again. He held a cardboard sign: Need money for food. Anything helps. I looked away and sighed. Was I the kind of person who ignored the needy?

Some people pretend to have needs but are actually con artists. Others have legitimate needs but face difficulties overcoming destructive habits. Social workers tell us it’s better to give money to the aid ministries in our city. I swallowed hard and drove past. I felt bad, but I may have acted wisely.

God commands us to “warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:14). To do this well we must know who belongs in which category. If we warn a weak or disheartened person, we may break her spirit; if we help an idle person, we may encourage laziness. Consequently, we help best from up close, when we know the person well enough to know what he needs.

Has God burdened your heart to help someone? Great! Now the work begins. Don’t assume you know what that person needs. Ask her to share her story, and listen. Prayerfully give as seems wise and not merely to feel better. When we truly aim “to do what is good for each other,” we will more readily “be patient with everyone,” even when they stumble (VV 14–15). - MIKE WITTMER

개선 행진

2016년 시카고 컵스 야구팀이 100여년 만에 처음으로 월드시리즈에서 승리했을 때, 5백만의 인파가 퍼레이드를 구경하고 시내 중심가에 모여 우승을 축하했다고 합니다.

승리를 축하하는 퍼레이드는 현대에 생겨난 것이 아닙니다. 그 중 유명한 것이 로마의 개선 행진인데, 승리한 장군들이 선두에서 휘하 부대와 포로들을 이끌고 군중이 운집한 거리를 지나갔던 것입니다.

바울이 고린도 교회에 편지를 썼을 때 아마 그런 개선 행진의 모습이 머리에 떠올랐던 것 같습니다. 편지에서 바울은 “그리스도의 개선 행렬에 [포로된 자들인]”(고린도후서 2:14, 새번역) 신도들을 이끌어 주시는 하나님께 감사를 드리고 있습니다 . 여기서 그리스도를 따르는 자들이 그리스도의 개선 행렬에 포로로 나온다는 생각이 매우 흥미롭습니다 . 그러나 우리 신자들은 강제로 끌려와 참여하는 것이 아니라, 승리하시고 부활하신 그리스도께서 이끄시는 그 행진에 기꺼이 참여하는 “포로들”입니다. 그리스도인인 우리들은 그리스도께서 승리하심으로 하나님의 나라를 세우시고 지옥의 권세가 이기지 못할 것이라는 사실을 경축하는 것입니다(마태복음 16:18).

예수님의 십자가 승리와, 그로 말미암아 믿는 자들에게 주어지는 자유에 대해 이야기하면서 우리는 “그리스도를 아는 지식의 향기를 어디에나”(고린도후서 2:14, 새번역) 전파하는 것입니다. 사람들이 이 향기를 구원의 기쁜 확신으로 받아들이거나 아니면 그들의 실패를 뜻하는 악취로 여기거나, 눈에 보이지는 않지만 강한 이 향기는 우리가 가는 곳이라면 어디든지 따라다닐 것입니다.

우리는 그리스도를 따라가면서 그분의 부활의 승리, 곧 온 세상에 구원을 가능케 하신 승리를 선포합니다.

Victory Parade

In 2016 when the Chicago Cubs baseball team won the World Series for the first time in more than a century, some sources said that five million people lined the parade route and gathered at a downtown rally to celebrate the championship.

Victory parades are not a modern invention. A famous ancient parade was the Roman Triumph, in which victorious generals led a procession of their armies and captives through crowded streets.

Such parade imagery was likely in Paul’s mind when he wrote to the Corinthian church thanking God for leading believers “as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession” (2 CORINTHIANS 2:14). I find it fascinating that in this imagery, followers of Christ are the captives. However, as believers we’re not forced to participate, but are willing “captives,” willingly part of the parade led by the victorious, resurrected Christ. As Christians, we celebrate that through Christ’s victory, He is building His kingdom and the gates of hell will not prevail against it (MATTHEW 16:18).

When we talk about Jesus’s victory on the cross and the freedom it gives believers, we help spread the “aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere” (2 CORINTHIANS 2:14). And whether people find the aroma to be the pleasing reassurance of salvation or the odor of their defeat, this unseen but powerful fragrance is present everywhere we go.

As we follow Christ, we declare His resurrection victory, the victory that makes salvation available to the world. - LISA SAMRA

소중한 것

“내 소중한......” 톨킨의 ‘반지의 제왕’ 삼부작에 처음 묘사된, “능력을 지닌 ‘소중한’ 반지”에 광적으로 집착하는 수척한 모습을 한 골룸의 이미지는 오늘날 탐욕과 집착, 심지어 정신이상 등을 대표하는 하나의 상징이 되었습니다.

이 이미지는 또한 괴로움과 연관된 이미지이기도 합니다. 반지 뿐 아니라 자기 자신과의 애증의 관계로 괴로워하는 골룸의 목소리는 바로 우리 자신의 내면의 갈망을 그대로 들려줍니다. 그 갈망하는 것이 어떤 특정한 한 가지에 국한되어 있는 것이든, 아니면 단지 “보다 많은 것”을 그저 막연히 바라는 것이든, 확실한 것은 마침내 우리의 “소중한 것”을 손에 넣기만 하면 만족하게 될 거라는 것입니다. 하지만 오히려 우리를 온전하게 해주리라고 생각했던 그것이 이전보다 훨씬 더 공허한 느낌을 갖게 합니다.

여기 더 좋은 삶의 방식이 있습니다. 다윗이 시편 16편에서 표현하는 것처럼, 우리 내면의 갈망이 절망적이고 헛된 만족 추구로 우리를 내몰 때(4절), 우리는 하나님을 떠나서는 아무것도 가질 수 없다는 것을 기억하고(2절) 피난처이신 하나님께로 돌아와야 합니다(1절).

우리가 만족을 구하기 위해 “저 바깥 쪽”을 바라보기를 그만두고 대신 하나님의 아름다움을 바라볼 때(8절), 우리는 마침내 진정한 만족을 맛볼 수 있습니다. 그것은 지금부터 영원히 매순간마다 하나님과 같이 “생명의 길”을 걸어가며 “주님 앞에 있는 기쁨”을 누리는 삶입니다(11절).

Precious

“My precious . . .” First portrayed in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, the image of the emaciated creature Gollum in his maniacal obsession with the “ precious ring of power” has become an iconic one today—for greed, obsession, even insanity.

It’s also a troublingly relatable image. In his tormented lovehate relationship with both the ring and with himself, Gollum’s voice echoes the hunger in our own hearts. Whether it’s directed at one thing in particular, or just a vague longing for “more,” we’re sure that once we finally get our own “precious,” we’ll be satisfied. But instead, what we thought would make us whole leaves us feeling even emptier than before.

There’s a better way to live. As David expresses in Psalm 16, when the longings in our hearts threaten to send us on a desperate, futile quest for satisfaction (V 4), we can remember to turn to God for refuge (V 1), reminding ourselves that apart from Him we have nothing (V 2).

And as our eyes stop looking for satisfaction “out there” to gaze instead on God’s beauty (V 8), we find ourselves finally tasting true contentment—a life of basking in the “joy [of God’s] presence,” walking with Him each moment in “the way of life”—now and forever (V 11 NLT ). - MONICA BRANDS

함정에서 벗어나기

파리지옥은 노스캐롤라이나 주 우리 집에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있는 작은 모래 습지에서 처음 발견되었습니다. 이 식물은 식충 식물이기 때문에 보고 있으면 매우 흥미롭습니다.

파리지옥은 활짝 핀 꽃처럼 생긴 화려한 덫 안에 향기로운 꿀을 분비하는데, 그 안으로 벌레가 기어 들어오면 바깥 테두리에 있는 감지기가 작동되어 덫이 순식간에 조여지고 닫히면서 먹이를 포획합니다. 그 다음 이 덫이 더 단단히 닫히면서 효소를 분비하여 천천히 먹이를 소화시킵니다. 이렇게 하여 이 식물은 모래땅에서 얻을 수 없는 영양분을 얻습니다.

하나님의 말씀은 불시에 우리를 포획할 수 있는 다른 종류의 덫을 이야기 하고 있습니다. 바울 사도는 자기 제자 디모데에게 이렇게 경고했습니다. “부하려 하는 자들은 시험과 올무와 여러 가지 어리석고 해로운 욕심에 떨어지나니 곧 사람으로 파멸과 멸망에 빠지게 하는 것이라...... 이것을 탐내는 자들은 미혹을 받아 믿음에서 떠나 많은 근심으로써 자기를 찔렀도다”(디모데전서 6:9-10).

돈과 물질이 행복을 약속할 수는 있습니다. 그러나 그것들이 우리 삶에서 가장 우선시 되면 우리의 인생길은 위험해집니다. 우리가 예수님을 통해 보여주시는 하나님의 선하심만 보고 감사와 겸손의 마음으로 살아간다면 그 덫을 피해갈 수 있습니다. “자족하는 마음이 있으면 경건은 큰 이익이 됩니다”(6절).

이 세상의 일시적인 것들은 하나님과 달리 결코 우리를 만족시키지 못합니다. 참되고 영원한 만족은 하나님과의 관계를 통해서만 얻어집니다.

Out of the Trap

The Venus flytrap was first discovered in a small area of sandy wetlands not far from our home in North Carolina. These plants are fascinating to watch because they’re carnivorous.

Venus flytraps release a sweetsmelling nectar into colorful traps that resemble open flowers. When an insect crawls inside, triggering sensors along the outer rim, the trap clamps shut in less than a second—capturing its victim. The trap then closes further and emits enzymes that consume its prey over time, giving the plant nutrients not provided by the sandy soil.

God’s Word tells of another trap that can capture unexpectedly. The apostle Paul warned his protégé Timothy: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” And “some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 TIMOTHY 6:9–10).

Money and material things may promise happiness, but when they take first place in our lives, we walk on dangerous ground. We avoid this trap by living with thankful, humble hearts focused on God’s goodness to us through Jesus: “godliness with contentment is great gain” (V 6).

The temporary things of this world never satisfy like God can. True, lasting contentment is found only through our relationship with Him. - JAMES BANKS

생생한 색깔로

재비어 맥커리는 열 번째 생일선물로 셀레나 이모가 보내준 안경을 쓰고는 와락 울음을 터뜨렸습니다. 태어날 때부터 색맹인 재비어에게 세상은 여태까지 오로지 회색, 흰색, 검은 색으로만 보였던 것입니다. 그러나 새로운 엔크로마 색맹교정 안경으로 재비어는 처음으로 본래의 색깔을 보게 되었습니다. 주위에 있는 아름다운 것들을 발견하고 아주 행복해 하는 아이에게서 가족들은 마치 어떤 기적을 보는 것 같았습니다.

하나님의 다채롭고 빛나는 광채를 목격한 요한 사도의 반응 또한 대단 했습니다(요한계시록 1 : 1 7 ) . 부활하신 그리스도의 충만한 영광을 접하고 난 후, 요한은 다음과 같은 광경을 얼핏 보았습니다. “하늘에 보좌를 베풀었고 그 보좌 위에 앉으신 이가 있는데 앉으신 이의 모양이 벽옥과 홍보석 같고 또 무지개가 있어 보좌에 둘렸는데 그 모양이 녹보석 같더라...... 보좌로부터 번개가 나고”(요한계시록 4:2-5).

이와는 다른 시대에 에스겔도 비슷한 환상을 보았습니다. 그가 본 것은 “청옥으로 만든 보좌 같은 것”이었으며, 그 보좌 위에 “벌겋게 달아오른 쇠 같아서 전체가 불덩어리처럼 보이는” 사람 같은 형체였습니다(에스겔 1:26-27, 현대인의 성경). 이 장엄한 형상은 무지개 같은 광채로 둘러싸여 있었습니다(28절).

우리도 언젠가는 그리스도를 대면하게 될 것입니다. 이런 환상들은 우리를 기다리고 있는 그 장엄한 광경을 암시해줄 뿐입니다. 우리가 지금 이곳에서 하나님의 아름다운 창조를 찬미하면서, 아직 나타나지 않은 영광을 기대하며 살아갈 수 있기를 소망합니다.

In Living Color

When Xavier McCoury put on the glasses Aunt Celena sent for his tenth birthday, he burst into tears. Born colorblind, Xavier had only ever seen the world in shades of gray, white, and black. With his new EnChroma glasses, however, Xavier saw color for the first time. His euphoria at witnessing the beauty around him made his family feel like they’d beheld a miracle.

Witnessing God’s colorfully radiant brilliance also evoked a powerful reaction in the apostle John (REVELATION 1:17). After encountering the full glory of the resurrected Christ, John glimpsed “a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. . . . From the throne came flashes of lightning” (REVELATION 4:2–5).

In a different time, Ezekiel had a similar vision, seeing “what looked like a throne of lapis lazuli,” with a figure above the throne who “looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire” (EZEKIEL 1:26–27). This magnificent figure was surrounded with rainbowlike radiance (V 28).

One day we will meet Christ facetoface. These visions give us just a hint of the magnificence that awaits us. As we celebrate the beauty of God’s creation here and now, may we live in anticipation of the glory yet to be revealed. - REMI OYEDELE

하나님께 아름다운 존재

데니즈가 남자 친구를 사귀기 시작할 때, 더 매력적으로 보일 거라고 생각하여 날씬한 몸매를 유지하고 유행에 맞는 옷을 입으려고 애썼습니다. 결국 모든 여성 잡지에서 권하는 대로 했던 것입니다. 데니즈는 한참 뒤에야 남자 친구의 본 마음을 알게 되었습니다. “나는 체중이 좀 더 나갔을 때의 네 모습이 더 좋았어. 네가 입은 옷에 대해서는 별로 신경 쓰지 않았어.”

그때서야 데니즈는 “아름다움”이란 아주 주관적이라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 아름다움에 대한 우리의 생각은 다른 사람에게서 너무 쉽게 영향을 받습니다. 내적인 아름다움의 가치를 잊어버린 채 종종 외적인 것에만 관심을 둡니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리를 단 한 가지로만 보십니다. 그분 자신의 사랑하는 아름다운 자녀로 말입니다. 나는 하나님이 세상을 창조하셨을 때 가장 좋은 것을 맨 마지막에 남겨두셨다고 생각합니다. 그것은 바로 우리들입니다! 그분이 창조하신 모든 것이 다 좋았지만, 우리가 더 특별한 이유는 우리가 하나님의 형상으로 지어졌기 때문입니다(창세기 1:27).

하나님은 우리를 아름답게 여기십니다! 시편 기자가 자연의 위대함과 인간을 서로 비교해보며 그의 마음이 경외심으로 가득 찬 것도 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다. 그는 이렇게 묻습니다. “사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까”(시편 8:4). 하지만 하나님은 유한한 생명을 지닌 우리에게 그 어떤 다른 것도 누리지 못한 영광과 존귀를 부여해주시기로 작정하셨습니다(5절).

이 사실은 우리에게 하나님을 찬양해야 할 확신과 근거를 제공해줍니다(9절). 다른 사람들이 우리를 어떻게 생각하든, 우리가 우리 자신을 어떻게 생각하든, 우리는 하나님께 아름다운 존재라는 이 사실을 기억하십시오.

Beautiful to God

When Denise began dating her boyfriend, she attempted to maintain a slim figure and dress stylishly, believing she would be more attractive to him in that way. After all, it was what all the women’s magazines advised. It was only much later that she discovered what he really thought: “I liked you just as much when you were heavier and didn’t worry about what you wore.”

Denise realized then how subjective “beauty” was. Our view of beauty is so easily influenced by others. It’s often focused on the external, forgetting the value of inner beauty. But God sees us in only one way—as His beautiful, beloved children. I’d like to think that when God created the world, He left the best for last—us! Everything He created was good, but we’re extra special because we’re made in the image of God (GENESIS 1:27).

God considers us beautiful! No wonder the psalmist was filled with awe as he compared the greatness of nature with humans. “What is mankind,” he asked, “that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (PSALM 8:4). Yet God chose to give mortals a glory and honor that nothing else had (V 5).

This truth gives us an assurance and reason to praise Him (V 9). No matter what others think of us—or what we think of ourselves—know this: We are beautiful to God. - LESLIE KOH
