절대 희망을 포기하지 말라

의사가 내 친구에게 암 진단 결과를 얘기해 주면서 주변을 정리하는 게 좋겠다고 조언했습니다. 그 친구는 나와 전화통화를 하면서 남편과 어린 아이들을 걱정하며 흐느껴 울었습니다. 나는 이 친구의 다급한 기도제목을 주위 친구들과 함께 나누었습니다. 그러나 그 친구가 만난 다른 의사가 절대 희망을 포기하지 말라고 하면서 자기 의료진이 최선을 다하겠다고 약속했다는 말을 듣고 우리는 정말 기뻤습니다. 다른 날보다 견디기가 더 힘든 날도 있었지만, 친구는 자신에게 좋지 않은 일보다는 하나님께 집중했습니다. 친구는 결코 포기하지 않았습니다.

친구의 인내하는 믿음을 보고 나는 누가복음 8장에 나오는 매우 절망적인 상황에 처한 여인이 생각났습니다. 12년간 이어진 질병으로 고통과 실망과 소외감으로 지쳐버린 이 여인은 예수님 뒤로 다가가 손을 뻗어 주님의 옷자락을 잡았습니다. 자기의 상황이 아무리 불가능해 보여도 예수님은 다른 사람이 할 수 없는 일을 하실 수 있다고 믿고 끝까지 희망을 놓지 않았던 이 여인은 그의 믿음의 행동으로 그 자리에서 바로 병이 나았습니다(43-44절).

우리는 끝날 것 같지 않은 고통, 희망이 없어 보이는 상황, 참을 수 없을 것 같은 기다림 등을 겪을 수 있습니다. 그리고 역경이 사방으로 쌓여가는 순간들을 견뎌야 할 때도 있을 것입니다. 어쩌면 그리스도를 계속 믿는 중에도 간절히 바라는 치유를 경험하지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 그럴 때에도 예수님은 우리가 주님을 신뢰하여 절대 희망을 포기하지 말고, 언제나 하실 수 있고 언제나 신뢰할 수 있으며 언제나 가까이 계시는 주님께 계속 나아오라고 권하고 계십니다.

Never Give Up Hope

When my friend received a diagnosis of cancer, the doctor advised her to get her affairs in order. She called me, sobbing, worried about her husband and young children. I shared her urgent prayer request with our mutual friends. We rejoiced when a second doctor encouraged her to never give up hope and confirmed his team would do all they could to help. Though some days were harder than others, she focused on God instead of the odds stacked against her. She never gave up.

My friend’s persevering faith reminds me of the desperate woman in Luke 8. Weary from twelve years of ongoing suffering, disappointment, and isolation, she approached Jesus from behind and stretched her hand toward the hem of His robe. Her immediate healing followed her act of faith: persistently hoping . . . believing Jesus was able to do what others couldn’t . . . no matter how impossible her situation seemed (VV. 43–44).

We may experience pain that feels endless, situations that appear hopeless, or waiting that seems unbearable. We may endure moments when the odds against us are stacked high and wide. We may not experience the healing we long for as we continue trusting Christ. But even then, Jesus invites us to keep reaching for Him, to trust Him and never give up hope, and to believe He is always able, always trustworthy, and always within reach. - XOCHITL DIXON

닥친 일을 바로 행하라

최근 언젠가 누군가를 꼭 도와주어야겠다고 느꼈지만 아무것도 하지 못한 채 지나쳐 버리고만 때가 있었습니까? ‘10초 규칙’이라는 책에서 저자 클레어 드 그라프는 하루하루의 느낌이 하나님께서 우리를 보다 깊은 영적인 삶, 곧 주님을 향한 사랑에 이끌린 순종의 삶으로 부르시는 한 가지 방법일 수도 있다고 말합니다. 이 ‘10초 규칙’은 “우리가 행하기를 예수님이 원하신다고 꽤 확신이 서면 그냥 그 일을 하되”, “마음이 바뀌기 전에” 즉시 행하라고 우리에게 권면합니다.

예수님은 “너희가 나를 사랑하면 나의 계명을 지키리라”(요한복음 14:15) 고 말씀하십니다. 그런데 우리는 이렇게 생각할 수도 있습니다. ‘나는 주님을 정말 사랑해. 하지만 어떻게 주님의 뜻을 확신하고 따라가지?’ 예수님은 그분의 지혜로 우리가 성경의 지혜를 더 잘 이해하고 더 잘 따를 수 있는 길을 마련해주셨습니다. 주님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니 그는 진리의 영이라”(16-17절). 우리가 하루 종일 경험하는 자극들에 제대로 반응하면서 예수님께 순종하고 “[주님의] 계명을 지킬”(15절) 수 있는 것도 바로 우리와 함께하시고 우리 안에 계시는 성령님의 역사하심 때문입니다(17절).

크고 작은 일에서, 성령님은 우리가 믿음으로 당당히 행함으로써 하나님을 높이고 그분과 다른 사람들을 향한 우리의 사랑을 드러내도록 우리 마음을 움직여 주십니다(21절).

Do the Next Thing

When was the last time you felt compelled to help someone, only to let the moment pass without a response? In The 10-Second Rule, Clare De Graaf suggests that daily impressions can be one of the ways God calls us to a deeper spiritual walk, a life of obedience prompted by love for Him. The 10-Second Rule encourages you to simply “do the next thing you’re reasonably certain Jesus wants you to do,” and to do it right away “before you change your mind.”

Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commands” (JOHN 14:15). We might think, I do love Him, but how can I be certain of His will and follow it? In His wisdom, Jesus has provided what we need to better understand and follow the wisdom found in the Bible. He once said, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and will be with you forever—the Spirit of truth” (VV. 16–17). It’s by the work of the Spirit, who is with us and in us, that we can learn to obey Jesus and “keep [His] commands” (V. 15)—responding to the promptings experienced throughout our day (V. 17).

In the big and little things, the Spirit motivates us to confidently do by faith what will honor God and reveal our love for Him and others (V. 21). - RUTH O’REILLY-SMITH

이제 두렵지 않아요

에티오피아 경찰이 납치된 여자아이를 일주일 후에 발견했을때, 검은색 갈기의 사자 세 마리가 마치 자신들의 새끼인양 그 아이를 둘러싸 보호하고 있었습니다. 일곱 명의 남자가 이 열두 살 된 여자아이를 납치하여 숲속에 데리고가 아이를 구타하고 있었는데, 놀랍게도 작은 무리의 사자 떼가 이 아이의 울음소리를 듣고 달려와 구타하던 그 남자들을 쫓아버렸습니다. 원디무 경사는 기자에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리가 아이를 발견했을 때 그 아이를 지키고 있던 [사자들은] 아이를 마치 선물인 양 우리에게 남겨놓고 숲속으로 다시 들어갔습니다.”

이 어린 여자아이에게 일어난 일처럼, 폭력과 악이 우리를 힘으로 억눌러 우리에게서 희망을 빼앗고 두려움에 빠뜨릴 때가 있습니다. 옛날에 유다 사람들이 바로 그런 일을 겪었습니다. 그들은 포악한 적의 군대에 짓밟혀 빠져나올 엄두도 내지 못했습니다. 두려움이 그들을 완전히 삼켜버린 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 언제나 변함없이 자기 백성들과 함께 하셨습니다. “이스라엘 왕 여호와가 네 가운데 계시니 네가 다시는 화를 당할까 두려워하지 아니할 것이라”(스바냐 3:15). 우리가 당하는 재앙이 우리 자신의 반역에서 비롯된 것일 때라도, 하나님은 그래도 우리를 구하러 오십니다. “너의 하나님 여호와가 너의 가운데에 계시니 그는 구원을 베푸실 전능자이시라”(17절).

어떤 환난, 어떤 악이 우리를 덮치더라도 유다의 사자이신 예수님이 우리와 함께 하십니다(요한계시록 5:5). 아무리 혼자라는 느낌이 들어도 능력의 구주께서 우리와 함께 하십니다. 어떤 두려움이 우리를 엄습해 와도 하나님은 바로 우리 곁에 계시다는 것을 확신시켜 주십니다.

No Longer Afraid

When the Ethiopian police found her a week after her abduction, three black-maned lions surrounded her, guarding her as though she were their own. Seven men had kidnapped the twelve-year-old girl, carried her into the woods and beaten her. Miraculously, however, a small pride of lions heard the girl’s cries, came running and chased off the attack-
ers. “[The lions] stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest,” police Sergeant Wondimu told one reporter.

There are days when violence and evil, like that inflicted on this young girl, overpower us, leaving us without hope and terrified. In ancient times, the people of Judah experienced this. They were overrun by ferocious armies and unable to imagine any possibility of escape. Fear consumed them. However, God always renewed His unrelenting presence with His people: “The LORD , the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm” (ZEPHANIAH 3:15). Even when our catastrophes result from our own rebellion, God still comes to our rescue. “The LORD your God is with you,” we hear, “the Mighty Warrior who saves” (V. 17).

Whatever troubles overtake us, whatever evils, Jesus—the Lion of Judah—is with us (REVELATION 5:5). No matter how alone we feel, our strong Savior is with us. No matter what fears ravage us, our God assures us that He is by our side. - WINN COLLIER

새로운 인간

런던 테이트 현대 미술관에 가서 관람하는데 어떤 작품이 나의 눈길을 사로잡았습니다. 그것은 브라질 예술가 실도 메이렐레스가 수많은 구형 라디오를 쌓아 올려 만든 거대한 탑이었습니다. 라디오 하나하나가 모두 켜져 있어 소리가 났는데, 각각 다른 주파수에 맞춰져 있어 소리들이 서로 뒤섞여 알아들을 수 없는 불협화음을 만들어내고 있었습니다. 메이렐레스는 이 조각 작품을 ‘바벨탑’이라고 제목을 붙였습니다.

제목이 잘 어울렸습니다. 성경 속의 바벨탑에서는 하늘에 닿고자 하는 인간들의 시도를 하나님께서 그들의 언어를 혼란시켜 무산시키셨습니다 (창세기 11:1-9). 서로 말이 통하지 않게 된 인간들은 여러 가지 방언을 하는 종족으로 분열되었고(10-26절), 그때부터 우리는 언어에 의해 분리되어 서로를 이해하는데 애를 먹고 있습니다.

여기 언어에 관한 또 다른 이야기가 있습니다. 오순절에 초대 그리스도인들에게 성령이 임하셔서 그날 예루살렘을 찾은 사람들의 여러 다른 언어로 하나님을 찬양하게 하셨습니다(사도행전 2:1-12). 이 기적으로 모든 사람들이 국적이나 언어에 상관없이 똑같은 메시지를 들을 수 있었습니다. 바벨탑의 혼란이 반전된 것입니다.

민족과 문화가 나눠진 이 세계에서 이것은 좋은 소식입니다. 예수님을 통해 하나님은 모든 나라와 족속과 언어를 막론하고 새로운 인간을 빚고 계십니다(요한계시록 7:9). 테이트 현대 미술관에서 있으면서 나는 그 모든 라디오가 갑자기 한 새로운 신호에 맞춰져 실내에 있는 모든 사람들에게 같은 노래 “나 같은 죄인 살리신 주 은혜 놀라와”를 들려주는 것을 상상해 보았습니다.

New Humanity

While I was visiting London’s Tate Modern gallery, one piece of art caught my attention. Created by Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles, it was a giant tower made of hundreds of old radios. Each radio was turned on and tuned to a different station, creating a cacophony of confusing, indecipherable speech. Meireles called the sculpture Babel.

The title is appropriate. At the original tower of Babel, God thwarted humanity’s attempt to seize heaven by confusing mankind’s languages (GENESIS 11:1–9). No longer able to communicate with one another, humanity fractured into tribes of various dialects (VV. 10–26). Divided by language, we’ve struggled to understand each other ever since.

There’s a second part to the story. When the Holy Spirit came upon the first Christians at Pentecost, He enabled them to praise God in the various languages of those visiting Jerusalem that day (ACTS 2:1–12). Through this miracle, everyone heard the same message, no matter their nationality or language. The confusion of Babel was reversed.

In a world of ethnic and cultural division, this is good news. Through Jesus, God is forming a new humanity from every nation, tribe, and tongue (REVELATION 7:9). As I stood at Tate Modern, I imagined all those radios suddenly tuning to a new signal and playing the same song to all in the room: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound.” - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

가장 안전한 곳

태풍 플로렌스가 노스캐롤라이나 윌밍턴 쪽으로 무서운 세력으로 다가오자 우리 딸은 집을 떠날 준비를 했습니다. 딸은 태풍이 비켜가기를 바라며 마지막 순간까지 기다렸지만, 이제 당장 중요한 서류와 사진, 소지품을 서둘러 분류하며 무엇을 가지고 가야 할지 결정해야 했습니다. 나중에 딸이 이렇게 말했습니다. “떠난다는 것이 그렇게 어려울 줄 몰랐어요. 그 순간에는 나중에 다시 집에 돌아왔을 때 무엇이 남아 있을지 전혀 알 수 없었거든요.”

인생의 폭풍은 여러 모습으로 우리에게 다가옵니다. 허리케인, 토네이도, 지진, 홍수, 생각지도 않았던 결혼생활이나 자녀와의 문제, 갑작스런 질병이나 재정 손실 등, 너무 많은 소중한 것들이 한 순간에 완전히 없어져버리기도 합니다.

성경말씀은 그런 폭풍 가운데서도 우리에게 가장 안전한 곳이 있다고 말해줍니다. “하나님은 우리의 피난처시요 힘이시니 환난중에 만날 큰 도움이시라 그러므로 땅이 변하든지......두려워하지 아니하리로다”(시편 46:1-2).

이 시편을 쓴 저자들은 오래 전에 하나님을 섬기다가 배반하여 지진으로 멸망한 한 남자의 후손들입니다(민수기 26:9-11 참조). 그들이 공통적으로 보여주고 있는 것은 겸손과 하나님의 위대하심, 긍휼하심, 구원의 사랑에 대한 깊은 이해입니다.

환난은 오기 마련이지만 하나님은 그 모든 환난들보다 더 강하십니다. 구주께 도움을 구하러 달려가는 자들은 그분이 흔들리지 않는 분이시라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 하나님의 영원한 사랑의 품 안에 우리가 평화를 누릴 장소가 있습니다.

The Safest Place

As Hurricane Florence was bearing down on Wilmington, North Carolina, with devastating force, my daughter prepared to leave her home. She’d waited until the last moment, hoping the storm would veer away. But now she was hurriedly sorting through important papers, pictures, and belongings, trying to decide what to take with her. “I didn’t expect it would be so hard to leave,” she told me later, “but in that moment I didn’t know if anything would be there when I got back.”

Life’s storms come in many forms: hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, unexpected problems in marriage or with children, the sudden loss of health or finances. So much we value can be swept away in a moment.

Amid the storms, Scripture points us to the safest place: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way” (PSALM 46:1–2).

The writers of this psalm were descendants of a man who generations earlier served God but then rebelled against Him and perished in an earthquake (SEE NUMBERS 26:9–11). The outlook they share shows humility and a profound understanding of God’s greatness, compassion, and redeeming love.

Troubles come, but God outlasts them all. Those who run to the Savior discover that He can’t be shaken. In the arms of His eternal love we find our place of peace. - JAMES BANKS

화해의 문

아일랜드 더블린에 있는 성 패트릭 성당 안에는 500년 전 이야기를 전해주는 문이 하나 있습니다. 1492년 버틀러와 피츠제럴드 두 가문이 그 지역의 패권을 놓고 싸움을 시작했는데, 싸움이 격렬해지면서 버틀러 가문이 성당 안으로 피신했습니다. 피츠제럴드 가문이 와서 싸움을 그만두자고 제의했지만, 버틀러 가 사람들이 두려워서 문을 열지 않았습니다. 그래서 피츠제럴드 가 사람들이 문에 구멍을 뚫어 그 가문의 어른이 구멍으로 화친의 손을 내밀었습니다. 비로소 두 가문은 화해하게 되었고, 지금까지의 적이 친구가 되었습니다.

하나님도 화해의 문을 가지고 계신데, 바울 사도가 고린도교회에 열정을 다해 써 보낸 편지 속에 그것이 잘 나타나 있습니다. 하나님은 그분의 계획과 무한하신 사랑으로 그리스도의 십자가 죽음을 통해 인간과의 깨어진 관계를 다시 회복시키셨습니다. 우리는 하나님으로부터 멀어져 있었지만 하나님은 그분의 자비로 우리를 그곳에 버려두지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 “사람들의 죄과를 따지지 않으시고”(고린도후서 5:19, 새번역) 그분과의 관계를 회복하자고 손 내밀고 계십니다. “하나님이 죄를 알지도 못하신 [예수님을] 우리를 대신하여 죄로 삼으”심으로 하나님의 정의가 이루어져, 우리는 주님 안에서 하나님과 평화를 누릴 수 있게 되었습니다(21절).

하나님의 화해의 손길을 받아들일 때 우리는 다른 사람들에게 그 메시지를 전하는 중요한 임무를 부여받습니다. 우리는 믿는 모든 사람들에게 완전한 용서와 회복을 이루어주시는 놀라운 사랑의 하나님을 대표하는 사람들입니다.

The Door of Reconciliation

Inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland, there’s a door that tells a five-century-old tale. In 1492 two families, the Butlers and the FitzGeralds, began fighting over a high-level position in the region. The fight escalated, and the Butlers took refuge in the cathedral. When the FitzGeralds came to ask for a truce, the Butlers were afraid to open the door. So the FitzGeralds cut a hole in it, and their leader offered his hand in peace. The two families then reconciled, and adversaries became friends.

God has a door of reconciliation that the apostle Paul wrote passionately about in his letter to the church in Corinth. At His initiative and because of His infinite love, God exchanged the broken relationship with humans for a restored relationship through Christ’s death on the cross. We were far away from God, but in His mercy He didn’t leave us there. He offers us restoration with Himself—“not counting people’s sins against them” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:19). Justice was fulfilled when “God made [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us,” so that in Him we could be at peace with God (V. 21).

Once we accept God’s hand in peace, we’re given the important task of bringing that message to others. We represent the amazing, loving God who offers complete forgiveness and restoration to everyone who believes. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

상처 자국 이야기

어머니는 판다곰 얼굴 모양의 팬지꽃을 가꾸셨는데 거기에 나비가 들락거리며 바쁘게 날아다녔습니다. 어렸을 때 나는 그 나비를 무척 잡고 싶어 뒷마당에서 부엌으로 달려 들어가 큰 유리병을 움켜잡았습니다. 그런데 급히 돌아 나오다 그만 발이 걸려 넘어지면서 콘크리트 테라스에 세게 부딪쳤습니다. 병이 손목에 눌려 박살이 나면서 거기에 보기 흉한 깊은 상처가 나 열여덟 바늘이나 꿰매야 했습니다. 지금 내 손목에는 애벌레가 가로질러 기어가는 모양의 상처 자국이 남아 있는데 거기에는 다쳤던 이야기와 치료받은 이야기가 모두 담겨 있습니다.

예수님도 돌아가신 후 제자들에게 나타나셨을 때 상처 자국을 지니고 계셨습니다. 요한은 도마가 “예수님의 손의 못 자국”을 보고 싶어 하자 예수님이 도마에게 “네 손가락을 이리 내밀어 내 손을 보고 네 손을 내밀어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보라”(요한복음 20:25,27) 고 하셨다고 전하고 있습니다. 그는 자신이 바로 그 예수님이라는 것을 밝히시기 위해 그때까지도 확연히 볼 수 있는 고통의 상처 자국을 가지고 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나셨습니다.

예수님의 상처 자국은 그분이 구주시라는 증거이며 우리 구원의 이야기를 말해줍니다. 그분의 손과 발에 뚫린 자국과 움푹 들어간 허리는 우리를 위해 당하시고 참아내셔서 마침내 치유가 이루어진 고통의 이야기를 드러내 보여줍니다. 예수님이 그렇게 하셨기에 우리는 그분께로 회복되어 온전하게 될 수 있습니다.

한 번이라도 그리스도의 상처 자국 이야기에 대해 깊이 생각해본 적이 있습니까?

Scar Stories

The butterfly flitted in and out of my mother’s panda-faced pansies. As I child, I longed to catch it. I raced from our backyard into our kitchen and grabbed a glass jar, but on my hasty return, I tripped and hit the concrete patio hard. The jar smashed under my wrist and left an ugly slash that would require eighteen stitches to close. Today the scar crawls like a caterpillar across my wrist, telling the story of both wounding and healing.

When Jesus appeared to the disciples after His death, He brought His scars. John reports Thomas wanting to see “the nail marks in his hands” and Jesus inviting Thomas to “put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side” (JOHN 20:25, 27). In order to demonstrate He was the same Jesus, He rose from the dead with the scars of His suffering still visible.

The scars of Jesus prove Him to be the Savior and tell the story of our salvation. The pierced marks through His hands and feet and the hollow in His side reveal a story of pain inflicted, endured, and then healed—for us. He did it so that we might be restored to Him and made whole.

어둠 속의 빛

‘믿음의 세대들’이라는 책에서 미스터 배는 하나님의 신실하심과 어둠을 뚫는 복음의 능력에 대해 설명하고 있습니다. 그의 할아버지와 부모님, 그리고 자신의 가족 모두 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 전했다는 이유로 박해를 받았습니다. 그런데 한 가지 흥미로운 일이 일어났습니다. 미스터 배가 친구에게 하나님에 대해 얘기했다는 이유로 투옥되었는데 이 일로 그의 믿음이 더 커졌다는 것입니다. 같은 일이 그의 부모에게도 일어났습니다. 선고를 받고 강제수용소에 갇혔을 때 그들은 수용소 안에서도 그리스도의 사랑을 계속 전했습니다. 미스터 배는 요한복음 1장 5절의 약속이 진실임을 알게 되었습니다. “그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치니, 어둠이 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다”(새번역).

예수님이 붙잡혀 십자가에 돌아가시기 전, 제자들에게 그들이 겪게 될 환난에 대해 경고하셨습니다. “아버지와 나를 모르기 때문에 그런 짓을 할”(16:3, 현대인의 성경) 사람들에 의해 제자들이 배척을 당하게 되리라는 것이었습니다. 그러나 예수님은 위로의 말씀도 함께 주셨습니다. “세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하나 담대하라 내가 세상을 이기었노라”(33절).

많은 그리스도인들이 미스터 배의 가족들이 겪었던 정도의 박해를 당하지는 않았지만 우리도 고난을 당하리라 예상할 수 있습니다. 그렇지만 절망이나 분노에 억눌릴 필요는 없습니다. 우리에게는 보혜사, 곧 예수님이 보내주시겠다고 약속하신 성령님이 계십니다. 우리는 성령님을 의지하여 그분의 인도와 위안을 받을 수 있으며(7절), 하나님의 임재에서 오는 권능으로 힘든 시기에도 흔들리지 않을 수 있습니다.

A Light in the Darkness

In These Are the Generations, Mr. Bae describes God’s faithfulness and the power of the gospel to penetrate the darkness. His grandfather, parents, and his own family were all persecuted for sharing their faith in Christ. But an interesting thing happened when Mr. Bae was imprisoned for telling a friend about God: his faith grew. The same was true for his parents when they were sentenced to a concentration camp—they continued to share Christ’s love even there. Mr. Bae found the promise of John 1:5 to be true: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Before His arrest and crucifixion, Jesus warned His disciples about the trouble they’d face. They would be rejected by people who “will do such things because they have not known the Father or me” (16:3). But Jesus offered words of comfort: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (V. 33).

While many believers in Jesus haven’t experienced persecution on the level of that endured by the family of Mr. Bae, we can expect to face trouble. But we don’t have to give in to discouragement or resentment. We have a Helper—the Holy Spirit Jesus promised to send. We can turn to Him for guidance and comfort (V. 7). The power of God’s presence can hold us steady in dark times. LINDA WASHINGTON

가보지 않은 길

사람들이 내게 5개년 계획이 있는지 물어봅니다. 그런데 한 번도 가보지 않은 “앞에 놓인 길” 5년을 어떻게 계획할 수 있을까요?

나는 스탠포드대학에서 교목을 지냈던 1960년대를 회상합니다. 대학 때 체육교육을 전공했고 또 신나게 놀다보니 학자가 될 정도의 성적을 얻지 못했습니다. 나 는 나 의 새 로 운 지 위 에 완전히 부적합하다고 느꼈습니다. 거의 매일 어둠 속을 더듬는 맹인처럼 캠퍼스를 어슬렁거리며 하나님께 어떻게 해야 할지를 물었습니다. 어느 날 한 학생이 “난데없이” 나에게 남학생 동아리에서 성경공부를 인도해 달라는 부탁을 했습니다. 그것이 시작이었습니다.

하나님은 어느 한 지점에 서서 길을 가리켜주시는 분이 아닙니다. 하나님은 안내인이지 표지판이 아니십니다. 그분은 우리와 함께 걸으시며 우리가 한 번도 생각해보지 않았던 길로 인도하십니다. 우리가 할 일은 하나님과 함께 걸어가는 것뿐입니다.

그 길이 쉽지만은 않을 것이고 거기엔 “험한 곳들”도 있을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 “암흑이......광명이 되게 하며” 우리를 “버리지 아니하겠다”(이사야 42:16)고 약속하셨습니다. 그분은 우리가 가는 길 내내 함께하실 것입니다.

바울 사도의 말대로 하나님은 “우리가 구하거나 생각하는 모든 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실”(에베소서 3:20) 수 있습니다. 우리가 계획을 세우고 앞일을 구상할 수는 있지만, 우리 주님의 상상력은 우리의 계획을 훨씬 초월합니다. 우리는 우리의 계획을 붙잡았던 손을 풀고 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지 보아야 합니다.

A Road Not Traveled

People ask me if I have a five-year plan. How can I plan five years “down the road” on a road I’ve never traveled?

I think back to the 1960s when I was a minister to students at Stanford University. I’d been a physical education major in college and had a lot of fun, but I left no record of being a scholar. I felt wholly inadequate in my new position. Most days I wandered around the campus, a blind man groping in the darkness, asking God to show me what to do. One day a student “out of the blue” asked me to lead a Bible study in his fraternity. It was a beginning.

God doesn’t stand at a juncture and point the way: He’s a guide, not a signpost. He walks with us, leading us down paths we never envisioned. All we have to do is walk alongside Him.

The path won’t be easy; there’ll be “rough places” along the way. But God has promised that He will “turn the darkness into light” and “will not forsake” us (ISAIAH 42:16). He’ll be with us all the way.

Paul said that God is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (EPHESIANS 3:20). We can scheme and envision, but our Lord’s imagination far transcends our plans. We must hold them loosely and see what God has in mind. DAVID H. ROPER

전사처럼 살라

18세의 엠마는 소셜미디어를 통해 신실하게 예수님을 전하고 있습니다. 그러나 괴롭히기를 좋아하는 사람들이 그리스도로 기뻐하고 그분을 아주 사랑하는 그녀를 헐뜯고 있습니다. 그녀의 외모를 가지고 험담을 하는 사람들이 있는가 하면, 하나님을 전심으로 섬기는 것에 대해 지능이 모자란다고 말하는 사람들도 있습니다. 그런 불쾌한 말들이 엠마의 마음에 깊이 상처를 줬지만 그럼에도 그녀는 계속해서 담대한 믿음과 예수님과 다른 사람들을 향한 사랑으로 복음을 전하고 있습니다. 하지만 이따금 엠마는 자신의 정체성과 가치가 다른 사람들의 비판에 의해 결정된다는 생각이 들기도 합니다. 그럴 때마다 하나님께 도움을 구하고, 자기를 힘들게 하는 사람들을 위해 기도하며, 성경말씀을 묵상하고, 성령님이 주시는 용기와 확신으로 견뎌나가고 있습니다.

기드온은 잔인하게 괴롭히는 미디안 사람들과 맞서게 되었습니다(사사기 6:1-10). 하나님은 기드온을 “큰 용사”라고 부르셨지만 그는 의심과 스스로 부여한 한계와 불안감을 떨쳐버리기 위해 힘겹게 씨름하고 있었습니다(11-15절). 기드온은 몇 차례에 걸쳐 주님이 함께 하시는지 그리고 자신이 과연 합당한 사람인지 의문을 가졌지만, 결국 믿음으로 주님 앞에 엎드렸습니다.

우리가 하나님을 신뢰하면 우리에게 주시는 그분의 말씀을 사실로 믿으며 그대로 살아갈 수 있습니다. 우리가 박해로 우리의 정체성이 의심될 때에도 사랑이 많으신 하나님 아버지께서 우리와 함께 계심을 확실히 보여주시고 우리를 대신해서 싸워주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분의 절대적인 사랑으로 무장되고, 그분의 무한한 은혜로 호위 받고, 그분의 변함없는 진리로 무장된 강한 전사처럼 살아갈 수 있다고 확실하게 말씀해주십니다.

Walk Like a Warrior

Eighteen-year-old Emma faithfully talks about Jesus on social media, even though bullies have criticized her joy and enthusiastic love for Christ. Some have attacked her with remarks about her physical appearance. Others have suggested a lack of intelligence because of her devotion to God. Though the unkind words cut deep into Emma’s heart, she continues to spread the gospel with bold faith and love for Jesus and others. Sometimes, though, she’s tempted to believe her identity and worth are determined by the criticism of others. When that happens, she asks God for help, prays for her persecutors, meditates on the words of Scripture, and perseveres with Spirit-empowered courage and confidence.

Gideon faced fierce tormentors—the Midianites (JUDGES 6:1–10). Though God called him a “mighty warrior,” Gideon struggled to let go of his doubt, self-imposed limitations, and insecurities (VV. 11–15). On more than one occasion, he questioned the Lord’s presence and his own qualifications, but eventually surrendered in faith.

When we trust God, we can live like we believe what He says about us is true. Even when persecution tempts us to doubt our identity, our loving Father confirms His presence and fights on our behalf. He affirms we can walk like mighty warriors armed with His absolute love, guarded by His endless grace, and secured in His reliable truth. XOCHITL DIXON
