하늘에서 내려온 선물

옛 이야기에 따르면 니콜라스(기원후 270년에 출생)라는 이름의 남자가 너무 가난해서 세 딸을 먹여 살릴 수 없고 앞으로 닥쳐올 딸들의 결혼 때 해줄 수 있는 것은 더더욱 없었던 어떤 아버지에 대한 이야기를 들었습니다. 니콜라스는 아무도 모르게 그 아버지를 도와주고 싶어서 금 한 자루를 그 집 열린 창문 안으로 던져 넣었는데 그것이 벽난로에서 말리고 있던 양말인지 신발 속으로 들어갔습니다. 성 니콜라스로 알려지게 된 이 사람은 훗날 산타클로스의 기원이 되었습니다.

위에서 내려온 그 선물 이야기를 들었을 때 나는 아버지 하나님을 생각 했습니다. 그분은 사랑과 연민의 마음으로 기적적인 탄생을 통해 가장 위대한 선물인 그분의 아들을 이 땅에 보내주셨습니다. 마태복음에 따르면 한 처녀가 임신하여 낳을 아들이 장차 “하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다”(1:23)는 뜻의 임마누엘이라 불릴 것이라는 구약성경의 예언이 예수님으로 말미암아 이루어진 것입니다.

니콜라스의 선물이 아름다운 것이었다면 예수님이라는 선물은 얼마나 더 놀라운 것인지요. 예수님은 하늘나라를 떠나 사람이 되시고 죽었다가 다시 살아나셔서 지금 우리와 함께 계시는 하나님이십니다. 주님은 우리가 아파하고 슬퍼할 때 위로하시고, 낙담할 때 용기를 주시며, 미혹 당할 때에 우리에게 진실을 드러내 보여주십니다.

Gifts from Above

According to an old story, a man named Nicholas (born in ad 270) heard about a father who was so poor that he couldn’t feed his three daughters, much less provide for their future marriages. Wanting to assist the father, but hoping to keep his help a secret, Nicholas threw a bag of gold through an open window, which landed in a sock or shoe drying on the hearth. That man was known as St. Nicholas, who later became the inspiration for Santa Claus.

When I heard that story of a gift coming down from above, I thought of God the Father, who out of love and compassion sent to earth the greatest gift, His Son, through a miraculous birth. According to Matthew’s gospel, Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy that a virgin would conceive and give birth to a son whom they would call Immanuel, meaning “God with us” (1:23).

As lovely as Nicholas’s gift was, how much more amazing is the gift of Jesus. He left heaven to become a man, died and rose again, and is God living with us. He brings us comfort when we’re hurting and sad; He encourages us when we feel downhearted; He reveals the truth to us when we might be deceived. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

자진해서 베푸는 친절

젊은 엄마 혼자서 아이들을 데리고 비행기에 올랐습니다. 그 엄마는 발버둥치며 울어대는 세 살 배기 딸아이를 안간힘을 다해 달랬습니다. 그러더니 이제는 4개월 된 사내아이가 배가 고파 울기 시작했습니다.

엄마 제시카가 딸아이의 안전벨트를 매어줄 동안 옆자리에 앉아 있던 승객이 선뜻 아기를 안아주겠다고 했습니다. 그런 다음 그 승객은 자신의 젊은 아빠 시절을 떠올리면서 엄마가 아기를 먹일 동안 세 살짜리 아이와 색칠놀이를 했습니다. 그 승객은 다음 연결 비행기에서도 필요하다면 도와주겠다고 했습니다.

제시카는 이렇게 회고했습니다. “그때 하나님의 손길에 완전히 감동받았어요. 우리 옆에 누구라도 앉을 수 있었지만, 그때 우리는 지금껏 가장 좋은 사람 옆에 앉았었어요.”

사무엘하 9장에서 우리는 내가 말하는 ‘자진해서 베푸는 친절’ 의 또 다른 예를 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 사울 왕과 그의 아들 요나단이 죽자, 일부에서는 다윗이 왕위 계승 경쟁자는 누구든 다 제거해버릴 거라고 예상했습니다. 그러나 다윗은 오히려 이렇게 물었습니다. “사울의 집에 아직도 남은 사람이 없느냐 내가 그 사람에게 하나님의 은총을 베풀고자 하노라”(3절). 그런 다음 요나단의 아들 므비보셋이 다윗 앞에 불려오자 다윗은 그가 받을 유산을 물려받게 해주고 그 때부터 그를 자신의 친아들처럼 대해주며 왕의 상에서 같이 식사하게 하는 온정을 베풀어줍니다(11절).

우리 또한 넘치는 하나님의 은혜를 받은 자들로서 다른 사람들에게 자진해서 친절을 베풀 수 있는 기회를 찾게 되기를 간절히 바랍니다(갈라디아서 6:10).

Intentional Kindness

Boarding a plane alone with her children, a young mom tried desperately to calm her three-year-old daughter who began kicking and crying. Then her hungry fourmonth-old son also began to wail.

A traveler seated next to her quickly offered to hold the baby while Jessica got her daughter buckled in. Then the traveler—recalling his own days as a young dad—began coloring with the toddler while Jessica fed her infant. And on the next connecting flight, the same man offered to assist again if needed.

Jessica recalled, “I [was] blown away by God’s hand in this. [We] could have been placed next to anyone, but we were seated next to one of the nicest men I have ever met.”

In 2 Samuel 9, we read of another example of what I call intentional kindness. After King Saul and his son Jonathan had been killed, some expected David to kill off any competition to his claim for the throne. Instead, he asked, “Is there no one still
alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” (V. 3). Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, was then brought to David who restored his inheritance and warmly invited him to share his table from then on—just as if he were his own son (V. 11).

As beneficiaries of the immense kindness of God, may we look for opportunities to show intentional kindness toward others (GALATIANS 6:10). CINDY HESS KASPER

책망으로부터의 해방

한 부부가 이동식주택 트럭을 몰고 건조한 캘리포니아 북부 지역을 운전하다가 타이어가 터지는 것을 느끼면서 노면에 금속이 긁히는 소리를 들었습니다. 그 불똥이 튀면서 2018년의 카 산불이 일어났습니다(Carr는 트럭이 달리던 도로 이름 Carr Powerhouse Road에서 따옴 – 역주). 거의 23만 에이커(약 930 제곱킬로미터)를 태운 이 산불로 천여 채의 가옥이 소실되었으며 몇 명의 인명 피해도 발생했습니다.

그 부부가 비통해 하고 있다는 소식을 들은 생존자들은 페이스북에 글을 올려 “부끄러움과 절망에” 빠져 있는 그들에게 “따뜻하게 친절을” 베풀어주었습니다. 한 여성은 다음과 같은 글을 올렸습니다. “이번 화재로 집을 잃어버린 사람으로서 내 가족이 당신들을 탓하지 않는다는 사실과 집을 잃은 다른 가족들 누구도 당신들을 비난하고 있지 않다는 점을 알아주었으면 해요. 사고는 언제든지 일어날 수 있어요. 부디 이 사랑의 메시지들을 보고 두 분이 마음의 부담을 덜었으면 해요. 우리는 함께 이 상황을 잘 헤쳐 나갈 거예요.”

책망, 곧 돌이킬 수 없는 일을 저질렀을 때 오는 두려움은 인간의 영혼을 잠식해버릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 고맙게도 성경은 이렇게 말합니다. “우리 마음이 혹 우리를 책망할 일이 있어도 하나님은 우리 마음보다 크심을 우리가 아노라”(요한1서 3:20). 우리 내면에 감추어진 부끄러움이 무엇이든 하나님은 그 모든 것보다 더 크십니다. 예수님은 우리에게 (필요하다면) 회개하여 치유하든지, 아니면 우리를 좀먹는 수치심을 그냥 드러내 보이라고 말씀하십니다. 그러면 하나님의 구원을 만나면서 우리는 “하나님 앞에서도 마음을 편안히 가질 수 있습니다”(19절, 현대인의 성경).

원래대로 되돌렸으면 하는 것들로 어떤 후회가 있더라도 하나님은 우리를 그분 가까이 이끌어주십니다. 예수님은 우리를 보고 웃으시며 “너희 마음은 이제 해방되었다”고 말씀하십니다.

Free from Condemnation

As a couple drove their trailer through dry Northern California, they felt a tire blow and heard the scrape of metal against pavement. The sparks ignited the 2018 Carr Fire—a wildfire that burned nearly 230,000 acres, destroyed more than 1,000 homes, and resulted in the deaths of several people.

When survivors heard how the couple were overcome with grief, they formed a Facebook page to show “grace and extend kindness . . . for the shame and despair” enveloping them. One woman wrote: “As someone that lost their home to this fire— I need you to know my family [doesn’t blame you], nor [do] any of the other families that lost homes. . . . Accidents happen. I really hope these kind messages ease your burden. We will all get through this together.”

Condemnation, our fear that we’ve done something unredeemable, can cannibalize the human soul. Thankfully, the Scriptures reveal that “if our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts” (1 JOHN 3:20). Whatever our hidden shame, God is greater than all of it. Jesus calls us to the healing act of repentance (if needed) or simply unmasks the shame consuming us. Then, encountering divine redemption, we “set our hearts at rest in his presence” (V. 19).

Whatever our regrets over things we wish we could undo, God draws us near. Jesus smiles at us and says, “Your heart is free.” - WINN COLLIER

잃어버린 봉투

내가 그것을 발견한 것은 우리가 다른 주에 있는 가족을 방문하고 집으로 돌아올 때였습니다. 차에 기름을 넣고 있는데, 먼지가 묻은 두툼한 봉투 하나가 땅에 떨어져 있는 것이 눈에 띄었습니다. 먼지투성이의 그 봉투를 집어 들고 안을 들여다보았더니 놀랍게도 백 달러의 돈이 들어있었습니다.

누군가가 그 백 달러를 잃어버리고 어쩌면 바로 그 순간에도 애타게 찾고 있을지도 몰랐습니다. 누군가 그것을 찾으러 되돌아올 경우를 생각하여 우리 전화번호를 그곳 직원에게 남겨 놓았습니다. 그런데 아직까지 아무도 연락하지 않았습니다.

누군가가 그 돈을 가지고 있다가 잃어버렸습니다. 이 땅의 보화도 더러는 그와 같습니다. 잃어버릴 수도 있고 도둑맞을 수도 있으며 그냥 낭비될 수도 있습니다. 그리고 투자를 잘못하거나 우리가 전혀 통제할 수 없는 금융시장에서 잃을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 예수님 안에 갖고 있는 하늘의 보화, 즉 회복된 하나님과의 관계와 영생의 약속은 그렇지 않습니다. 우리는 그것을 주유소뿐 아니라 어디에서도 잃어버릴 수 없습니다.

그것이 바로 그리스도께서 우리에게 “보물을 하늘에” 쌓아두라 (마태복음 6:20)고 하신 이유입니다. 우리가 “좋은 일을 많이”(디모데전서 6:18, 새번역) 하거나 “믿음에 부요하게”(야고보서 2:5) 되어 다른 사람들을 사랑으로 도와주며 그들에게 예수님을 전할 때 우리는 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 인도하심과 능력으로 우리 모두 영원한 보화를 쌓으며 하나님과 같이 하는 영원한 미래까지 내다볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

The Lost Envelope

We were on the way home from a visit with family in another state when I found it. I was pumping gas when I noticed a dirty, bulky envelope on the ground. I grabbed it, dirt and all, and looked inside. To my surprise, it contained one hundred dollars.

One hundred dollars that someone had lost and who at that very moment was possibly frantically searching to find. I gave our phone number to the attendants at the gas station in case anyone came back looking for it. But no one ever called.

Someone had that money and lost it. Earthly treasure is often like that. It can be lost, stolen, or even squandered. It can be lost in bad investments or even in a monetary market over which we have no control. But the heavenly treasure we have in Jesus—a restored relationship with God and the promise of eternal life—isn’t like that. We can’t lose it at a gas station or anywhere else.

That’s why Christ told us to store up “treasures in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:20). We do that when we become “rich in good deeds” (1 TIMOTHY 6:18) or “rich in faith” (JAMES 2:5)—lovingly helping others and sharing Jesus with them. As God leads and empowers us, may we store up eternal treasure even as we anticipate our eternal future with Him. - DAVE BRANON

사랑의 다른 모습

그리스도 시대에 로마의 여관들은 너무나 평판이 나빠서 랍비들은 그곳에 가축조차 맡기려고 하지 않았습니다. 그런 좋지 않는 환경에서 여행을 하는 기독교인들은 대개 믿는 사람들을 찾아 신세를 졌습니다.

그 초기 여행자들 가운데 예수님이 메시아라는 것을 부인하는 거짓 교사들이 있었습니다. 이것이 바로 요한2서에서 손님 접대를 ‘거부해야’ 할 때가 있다는 것을 독자들에게 말하고 있는 이유입니다. 요한은 그 전에 쓴 편지에서도 이들 거짓 교사들이 바로 “아버지와 아들을 부인하는......적그리스도”(요한1서 2:22)라고 말했습니다. 요한은 요한2서 독자들에게 그 점에 대해 자세히 설명하면서 예수님을 메시아로 믿는 사람은 누구나 “아버지와 아들을 모시는”(9절) 것이라고 말합니다.

그런 다음 요한은 이렇게 경고합니다. “누구든지 이 교훈을 가지지 않고 너희에게 나아가거든 그를 집에 들이지도 말고 인사도 하지 말라”(10절). 거짓 복음을 전하는 사람들에게 호의를 베푸는 것은 실제로 사람들을 하나님으로부터 떼어놓는 일을 도와주는 것입니다.

요한의 두 번째 서신에서 우리는 하나님의 사랑의 “다른 모습” 을 봅니다. 우리는 모든 사람을 두 팔 벌려 맞아주시는 그런 하나님을 섬깁니다. 그러나 속임수를 써서 자신은 물론 남에게 해를 끼치는 사람들에게는 진실한 사랑이 주어지지 않습니다. 하나님은 회개하며 자기에게 오는 자들은 그분의 팔로 감싸 안으시지만, 거짓말은 절대 받아들이지 않으십니다.

The Flip Side of Love

The Roman inns during the time of Christ had a reputation so bad that rabbis wouldn’t even permit cattle to be left at them. Faced with such bad conditions, traveling Christians usually sought out other believers for hospitality.

Among those early travelers were false teachers who denied that Jesus was the Messiah. This is why the letter of 2 John tells its readers there is a time to refuse to extend hospitality. John had said in a previous letter that these false teachers were “antichrist—denying the Father and the Son” (1 JOHN 2:22). In 2 John he elaborated on this, telling his readers that whoever believes Jesus is the Messiah “has both the Father and the Son” (V. 9).

Then he warned, “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them” (V. 10). To extend hospitality to someone preaching a false gospel would actually help keep people separated from God.

John’s second letter shows us a “flip side” of God’s love. We serve a God who welcomes everyone with open arms. But genuine love won’t enable those who deceitfully harm themselves and others. God wraps His arms around those who come to Him in repentance, but He never embraces a lie. - TIM GUSTAFSON

희망이 있을까요?

에드워드 페이슨(1783-1827)은 매우 힘든 삶을 살았습니다. 남동생의 죽음으로 그는 뿌리째 흔들렸고 조울증으로 고생했으며 여러 날을 극심한 편두통에 시달렸습니다. 그것도 모자랐는지 말에서 떨어져 팔이 마비되었으며 결핵으로 거의 죽을 뻔도 했습니다! 그러나 놀랍게도 그는 이런 일들에 절망하거나 희망을 잃지 않았습니다. 그의 친구들은 에드워드가 죽기전에 아주 기뻐했다고 했습니다. 어떻게 그럴 수 있었을까요?

바울 사도는 로마의 성도들에게 보낸 서신에서 어떤 상황에도 하나님의 사랑이 함께함을 전적으로 확신한다고 했습니다. 그는 담대하게 이렇게 묻습니다. “만일 하나님이 우리를 위하시면 누가 우리를 대적하리요”(로마서 8:31). 하나님이 우리를 구원하시기 위해 자신의 아들 예수님까지 주셨다면, 우리가 이 세상 삶을 잘 마치는데 필요한 모든 것 또한 주실 것입니다. 바울은 자신이 직접 마주했던 견디기 어려워 보이는 일곱 가지 상황, 즉 환난, 곤고, 박해, 굶주림, 헐벗음, 위험, 칼(35절)들을 열거합니다. 바울은 그리스도의 사랑이 우리에게 닥치는 나쁜 일들을 막아주는 것은 아니라고 생각했지만, “이 모든 일에 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 우리가 넉넉히 이기느니라”(37절)고 말했습니다.

이 불확실한 세상에서 우리는 그 어떤 것도, 정말 그 어떤 것도 “우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없다”(39절)는 것을 알기 때문에 하나님을 완전히 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Is There Hope?

Edward Payson (1783–1827) led an extremely difficult life. The death of his younger brother shook him to the core. He struggled with bipolar disorder, and he was affected by extreme migraine headaches for days. If this wasn’t enough, a fall from a horse led to paralysis of his arm, and he almost died from tuberculosis! Surprisingly, his response wasn’t one of despair and hopelessness. His friends said that before Edward passed away, his joy was intense. How could that be?

In his letter to the believers in Rome, the apostle Paul expressed his complete confidence in the reality of God’s love regardless of circumstances. He asked with boldness, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (ROMANS 8:31). If God gave His very own Son, Jesus, to save us, then He will provide everything we need to finish this life well. Paul listed seven seemingly unbearable situations that he himself faced: trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and the sword (V. 35). He didn’t imply that Christ’s love would stop bad things from happening. But Paul said that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (V. 37).

Through the uncertainty of this world, God can be trusted completely, knowing that nothing, absolutely nothing, “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (V. 39). - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

정성들여 만들어진 것

뉴욕 주 고센의 치즈 농부 앨런 글루스토프는 유튜브 영상을 통해 치즈를 숙성시키는 과정, 다시 말해 치즈의 맛과 식감을 더해주는 과정을 설명했습니다. 치즈 덩어리들은 시장에 보내기 전, 6개월에서 12개월 동안 지하 동굴에 있는 선반에 계속 얹어놓습니다. 치즈가 그런 습한 환경에서 정성들여 만들어지는 것입니다. 글루스토프가 설명합니다. “우리는 치즈가 최고의 맛을 내도록 적절한 환경을 조성해주고......[그리고] 치즈의 진면목을 이끌어내기 위해 최선을 다하고 있습니다.”

나는 글루스토프가 생산하는 치즈의 잠재적 특성을 개발하려는 열정을 보면서, 하나님께서 자기 자녀들의 “가장 참된 잠재력”을 개발하여 그들이 풍성한 열매를 맺고 성숙해지도록 쏟으시는 열정을 떠올려 보았습니다. 에베소서 4장에서 바울 사도는 이런 과정을 거쳐 성숙되는 사람들, 예를 들면 사도들, 선지자들, 복음 전도자들, 목사들, 그리고 교사들에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다(11절). 이런 은사를 가진 사람들은 봉사활동 (12절에 언급되어 있는 “일”을 말함)을 독려할 뿐 아니라 성도 한 사람 한 사람의 믿음 성장을 촉진시키는데 도움을 줍니다. 그것의 목표는 우리가 “온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르는 것입니다”(13절).

영적 성장은 성령님의 능력에 힘입어 그분의 성숙케 하시는 과정을 따를 때 이루어집니다. 우리가 성령님이 우리 삶 속에 심어 주시는 사람들의 지침을 준수한다면, 성령께서 우리를 세상 밖으로 보내어 봉사하게 할 때처럼 많은 열매를 맺게 될 것입니다.

Carefully Crafted

In a YouTube video, Alan Glustoff, a cheese farmer in Goshen, New York, described his process for aging cheese, a process that adds to a cheese’s flavor and texture. Before it can be sent out to a market, each block of cheese remains on a shelf in an underground cave for six to twelve months. In this humid environment the cheese is carefully tended. “We do our best to give it the right environment to thrive . . . [and] to develop to its truest potential,” Glustoff explained.

Glustoff’s passion for developing the potential of the cheese he produces reminded me of God’s passion for developing the “truest potential” of His children so they will become fruitful and mature. In Ephesians 4, the apostle Paul describes the people involved in this process: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers (V. 11). People with these gifts help to stimulate the growth of each believer as well as to encourage acts of service (the “works” mentioned in verse 12). The goal is that we “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (V. 13).

Spiritual growth comes about through the power of the Holy Spirit as we submit to His maturing process. As we follow the guidance of the people He places in our lives, we become more effective as He sends us out to serve. - LINDA WASHINGTON

위험 물질

긴급출동 차량 한 대가 귀청을 찢는 사이렌 소리를 내며 내 차옆을 빠른 속도로 지나갔습니다. 그 차의 번쩍거리는 불빛이 내 차의 앞 유리를 환히 비출 때, 그 트럭 옆면에 쓰여 있는 “위험 물질”이라는 말이 불빛에 드러났습니다. 나중에 알게 되었지만, 그 차는 400갤런(약 1,500리터)짜리 황산 용기가 새기 시작한 어느 과학연구소로 급히 달려가고 있던 중이었습니다. 황산은 그것에 닿는 것은 무엇이든 손상시킬 수 있기 때문에 응급처치 요원들이 이 물질의 누수를 즉시 막아야 했습니다.

이 뉴스기사를 생각하다가 궁금한 생각이 들었습니다. ‘만일 내 입에서 귀에 거슬리거나 비난하는 말이 “새어나올” 때마다 사이렌이 요란하게 울린다면 어떻게 될까?’ 불행하게도, 그렇게 된다면 우리 집 주위는 매우 시끄러워질 것 같습니다.

이사야 선지자도 자신의 죄에 대해 나와 같은 자각을 고백했습니다. 그는 환상 중에 하나님의 영광을 보았을 때 자신이 정말 하찮은 존재라는 생각에 빠졌습니다. 그는 자신이 “입술이 부정한 사람”으로서, 똑같이 입술이 부정한 사람들과 함께 살고 있다는 사실을 알았습니다(이사야 6:5). 그런데 그 다음에 일어난 일을 보고 나는 희망을 가집니다. 한 천사가 시뻘겋게 타고 있는 숯을 이사야의 입술에 대면서 “네 악이 제하여졌고 네 죄가 사하여졌느니라”(7절)고 이야기해준 것입니다.

우리는 시시각각 글을 쓰거나 말을 할 때 해야 할 말을 선택합니다. 그 말들이 “위험한” 물질이 될까요? 아니면 하나님의 영광으로 우리의 죄가 드러나게 하여 그분의 은혜로 치유가 이루어져서 우리가 표현하는 모든 것으로 그분을 영화롭게 할 수 있을까요?

Hazardous Materials

The sound of a siren increased to an ear-piercing level as an emergency vehicle sped by my car. Its flashing lights glared through my windshield, illuminating the words “hazardous materials” printed on the side of the truck. Later, I learned it had been racing to a science laboratory where a 400-gallon container of sulfuric acid had begun to leak. Emergency workers had to contain the substance immediately because of its ability to damage whatever it came in contact with.

As I thought about this news story, I wondered what would happen if sirens blared every time a harsh or critical word “leaked” out of my mouth? Sadly, it might become rather noisy around our house.

The prophet Isaiah shared this sense of awareness about his sin. When he saw God’s glory in a vision, he was overcome by his unworthiness. He recognized that he was “a man of unclean lips” living with people who shared the same problem (ISAIAH 6:5). What happened next gives me hope. An angel touched his lips with a red-hot coal, explaining, “your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for” (V. 7).

We have moment-by-moment choices to make with our words—both written and spoken. Will they be “hazardous” material, or will we allow God’s glory to convict us and His grace to heal us so we can honor Him with everything we express? - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

진심어린 감사의 말

남편 앨런이 아들 재비어의 첫 취직 면접시험을 준비하면서 아들에게 채용해 줄 가능성이 있는 고용주들을 만난 후 그들에게 보낼 감사카드 한 묶음을 건네주었습니다. 그러고 나서 남편은 자신의 오랫동안 매니저로서의 경험을 살려 가상 면접관이 되어 아들에게 이런저런 질문을 하였습니다. 면접 연습이 끝난 후, 아들은 자기 이력서 몇 부를 폴더에 끼워 넣었습니다. 앨런이 감사카드에 대해 다시 얘기하자 아들은 웃으며 말했습니다. “예, 알았어요. 진심 어린 감사카드로 나는 다른 지원자들과 구별될 거예요.”

지원했던 회사 매니저가 재비어에게 채용하겠다는 전화를 하면서, 여러 해 동안 감사카드를 받았었는데 손으로 직접 쓴 감사카드는 처음이라고 고마움을 표했습니다.

감사의 말은 오래도록 좋은 인상을 남깁니다. 시편에는 시편 기자들의 진심어린 기도와 감사의 경배가 담겨 있습니다. 총 150 편의 시편 가운데 특히 다음 두 개의 절에 감사의 메시지가 잘 나타나 있습니다. “내가 전심으로 여호와께 감사하오며 주의 모든 기이한 일들을 전하리이다 내가 주를 기뻐하고 즐거워하며 지존하신 주의 이름을 찬송하리니”(시편 9:1-2).

우리는 하나님의 ‘모든’ 경이로운 행위에 대해 결코 감사를 다 표할 수 없을 것입니다. 그러나 우리의 기도에 진심어린 감사의 말로 시작할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 우리는 하나님을 찬양하며 또 그분이 하신 모든 일과 이루시겠다고 하신 모든 약속에 고마움을 표하면서, 감사로 경배 드리는 생활 방식을 키워나갈 수 있습니다.

A Sincere Thank You

In preparation for Xavier’s first job interview, my husband, Alan, handed our son a pack of thank-you cards for him to send out after he met with prospective employers. He then pretended to be a hiring interviewer, using his decades of experience as a manager to ask Xavier questions. After the role-playing, our son tucked several copies of his resume into a folder. He smiled when Alan reminded him about the cards. “I know,” he said. “A sincere thank-you note will set me apart from all the other applicants.”

When the manager called to hire Xavier, he expressed gratitude for the first hand-written thank-you card he’d received in years.

Saying thanks makes a lasting impact. The psalmists’ heartfelt prayers and grateful worship were preserved in the book of Psalms. Though there are one hundred and fifty psalms, these two verses reflect a message of thankfulness: “I will give thanks to you, LORD , with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High” (PSALM 9:1–2).

We will never be able to finish expressing our gratitude for all God’s wonderful deeds. But we can start with a sincere thank you through our prayers. We can nurture a lifestyle of grateful worship, praising God and acknowledging all He’s done and all He promises He’ll do. - XOCHITL DIXON

탐욕스럽게 움켜쥐기

‘소년과 개암나무 열매’라는 옛 우화에서 한 소년이 견과류가 들어있는 병에 손을 푹 집어넣어 견과류를 한 움큼 움켜잡습니다. 그런데 너무 많이 쥐는 바람에 손이 그만 병속에 갇히게 됩니다. 소년은 잡은 노다지를 조금도 놓치기 싫어 그만 울어버립니다. 결국, 손에 쥔 것을 조금 덜어 놓아야 손을 뺄 수 있다고 누가 타일러줍니다. 욕심은 고약한 상사일 수 있습니다.

전도서를 쓴 지혜로운 스승은 이 도덕적인 문제를 손에 관한 교훈과 손이 우리에게 의미하는 것을 예로 들어 설명합니다. 그는 게으른 자들을 탐욕스러운 자들과 비교하고 다음과 같이 대비시킵니다. “우매자는 팔짱을 끼고 있으면서 자기의 몸만 축내는도다 두 손에 가득하고 수고하며 바람을 잡는 것보다 한 손에만 가득하고 평온함이 더 나으니라” (4:5-6). 게으른 사람들은 파멸에 이를 때까지 일을 미루기만 하지만, 반면 부를 추구하는 사람들도 자신들의 노력이 “헛되어 불행한 노고” 라는 것을 나중에 깨닫게 됩니다(8절).

전도서의 스승에 따르면, 바람직한 상태는 탐욕스럽게 움켜쥐려는 수고에서 벗어나 진정 우리가 소유하고 있는 것에서 만족을 얻는 것입니다. 우리에게 속한 것은 언제나 남아있을 것이기 때문입니다. 예수님도 “사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 자기 목숨을 잃으면 무엇이 유익하리요”(마가복음 8:36)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

Greedy Grasping

In the ancient fable The Boy and the Filberts (Nuts), a boy sticks his hand into a jar of nuts and grabs a great fistful. But his hand is so full that it gets stuck in the jar. Unwilling to lose even a little of his bounty, the boy begins to weep. Eventually, he’s counseled to let go of some of the nuts so the jar will let go of his hand. Greed can be a hard boss.

The wise teacher of Ecclesiastes illustrates this moral with a lesson on hands and what they say about us. He compared and contrasted the lazy with the greedy when he wrote: “Fools fold their hands and ruin themselves. Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind” (4:5–6). While the lazy procrastinate until they’re ruined, those who pursue wealth come to realize their efforts are “meaningless—a miserable business!” (V. 8).

According to the teacher, the desired state is to relax from the toil of greedy grasping in order to find contentment in what truly belongs to us. For that which is ours will always remain. As Jesus said, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul” (MARK 8:36). - REMI OYEDELE
