삶을 돌아보는 엄마

세 아이의 엄마인 도나가 말했습니다. “저는 어머니 날이 정말 싫었어요. 그날은 한 엄마로서 느꼈던, 그리고 지금도 느끼고 있는 모든 부족함과 잘못들을 떠올려 주었기 때문이에요.”

도나는 높은 기대를 갖고 육아를 시작했지만 현실의 벽에 부딪혀 그 기준을 낮춰야만 했습니다. “엄마가 되는 것은 지금껏 내가 한 일 중 가장 힘든 일이었어요. 그리고 까다로운 아이 하나가 나를 매번 짜증나게 했어요.”

하나님이 레아를 이스라엘의 여자 가장으로 선택하셨을 때, 레아는 분명히 자녀 한 명 한 명에게 큰 기대를 가졌을 것입니다. 레아는 첫 네 아들에게 자신의 힘든 상황과 관련된 이름을 지어주었습니다(창세기 29:32-35). 하지만 성경의 암울한 이야기에 이르러 보면 그 아들들은 나쁜 자들로 등장합니다. 살인한 자(34:24-30)도 있었고 노예매매를 한 자(37:17-28)도 있었습니다. 레아의 아들 유다는 성경의 더 추악한 이야기 중 하나에서 악한 사람으로 나옵니다(38장).

어떻게 하나님처럼 유다를 포함한 레아의 혈통에서 메시아가 나게 하실 수 있을까요? 하나님은 가장 어려운 상황에서 가장 예상치 못한 사람들을 통해 구원을 이루십니다.

도나도 이 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 도나는 아이들을 양육하면서 문제에 부딪힐 때마다 “계속 노력하고 기도하는 것 외에는” 어떤 답을 찾지 못했습니다. 그리고 도나를 가장 짜증나게 했던 그 아이는 이제 자라서 엄마를 사랑하고 존경합니다. 도나는 돌이켜보며, “아마도 그 아이는 나와 하나님에 관해 무언가를 가르쳐 주려고 나에게 보내진 것 같아요.”라고 말합니다.

A MOM LOOKS BACK

“I really didn’t like Mother’s Day,” said Donna, a mom of three. “It brought back to me all the inadequacies and failures I felt and feel as a mother.”

Donna started her parenting life with high expectations. Reality lowered the bar. “Being a mother was really the hardest thing I ever did,” she said. And one particular child “pushed every button I had.”

When God chose Leah to be a matriarch of Israel, no doubt she had high expectations for each of her children. She gave her first four sons names with relevance to her difficult situation (GENESIS 29:32-35). Yet when it comes to dark stories in the Bible, these sons have starring roles as the bad guys. Some were guilty as murderers (34:24-30) and slavers (37:17-28). Leah’s son Judah is the villain in one of the uglier accounts in Scripture (CH. 38).

How like God to bring the Messiah through Leah’s descendants— including Judah. In the most difficult circumstances and through the most unexpected people, God works out redemption.

Donna learned this too. As she faced all her parenting challenges, she never found an answer “except to keep going and keep praying.” And that kid who pushed all her buttons? He’s grown now, and he loves and respects his mom. Looking back, Donna says, “Perhaps he was sent to me to teach me something about myself and something about my God.”

완전한 믿음으로 살기

전 세계에서 수천 명의 사람들이 병원에 몇 달 동안 입원해 있는 세티의 세 살난 아들을 위해 기도했습니다. 의사들이 아이 샤일로에게 더 이상 “의미 있는 뇌 활동이 없다”고 하자, 아이 엄마 세티가 나에게 전화로 이렇게 말했습니다. “가끔 제가 완전한 믿음으로 살지 못하는 것 같아 두려워요. 저는 하나님이 샤일로를 낫게 하셔서 우리 집으로 함께 돌아오게 하실 수 있다는 것을 알고 있어요. 하지만 천국으로 데려 가셔서 그를 낫게 해주셔도 저는 마음이 편안할 거에요.” 하나님이 그 누구보다도 잘 이해하신다는 것을 확신시켜 주면서 나는 이렇게 말했습니다. “하나님께 온전히 당신을 맡기셨군요. 그것이 완전한 믿음입니다!” 며칠 후, 하나님은 그녀의 소중한 아들 샤일로를 천국으로 데려가셨습니다. 아들을 잃은 슬픔에 힘들어하면서도 세티는 샤일로를 위해 기도해 준 많은 사람들과 하나님께 감사했습니다. “하나님은 여전히 좋으신 분이시고 여전히 하나님이심을 믿습니다.”

예수님이 다시 오실 때까지, 이 세상에서 우리는 “여러 가지 시험으로 말미암아 근심하게”(베드로전서 1:6) 될 것입니다. 우리는 실제 고통에서 오는 실제적인 감정을 겪어야 할 것입니다. 하지만 누구나 그리스도 안에서 “거듭남” (3절)을 경험하는 모든 사람들은 예수님을 향한 사랑으로 삶에 닻을 내리고 “말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 기뻐할”(8절) 수 있습니다. 그리스도를 믿는 우리 믿음의 마지막 결과는 바로 “[우리] 영혼의 구원”(9절)입니다.

우리가 온전한 믿음을 가지고 우리의 기도와 형편을 담대하게 그리스도께 맡길 수 있도록 성령님이 우리에게 힘을 더해 주십니다.

LIVING WITH FULL FAITH

Thousands of people around the world prayed for Sethie’s three-year-old son, who’d been hospitalized for months. When doctors said Shiloh had “no meaningful brain activity,” Sethie called me. “Sometimes, I’m scared I’m not living with full faith,” she said. “I know God can heal Shiloh and let him come home with us. I’m also at peace if God heals him by taking him to heaven.” Assuring her that God understands like no one else can, I said, “You’ve surrendered to God. That is full faith!” A few days later, God took her precious son to heaven. Though struggling with the grief of losing him, Sethie thanked God and the many people who prayed. She said, “I believe God is still good and still God.”

In this world, until Jesus comes again, we’ll “suffer grief in all kinds of trials” (1 PETER 1:6). We’ll need to process real emotions caused by real pain. However, everyone who experiences “new birth” in Christ (V. 3) can be anchored in life by love for Jesus and be “filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (V. 8). The end result of our faith in Christ is this: “the salvation of [our] souls” (V. 9).

The Holy Spirit empowers us to have full faith—living with our prayers and our situations confidently surrendered to Christ.

사랑이 주는 큰 놀라움

스포츠 판타지 고전 영화 ‘꿈의 구장’에서 레이 킨셀라는 돌아가신 아버지를 젊고 건강한 운동선수로 다시 만나게 됩니다. 그런 모습을 처음 본 레이는 아내 애니에게 이렇게 말합니다. “나는 아버지가 삶에 지쳐 있는 모습만 봤어. 지금 아버지 모습을 봐... 아버지께 뭐라고 말하지?” 그 장면을 보니 궁금한 생각이 듭니다. ‘우리가 사랑했던 사람, 하지만 이제 세상에 없는 사람을 활기차고 건강한 모습으로 다시 만나게 된다면 어떤 느낌이 들까?’

막달라 마리아는 예수님이 죽음에서 부활하신 후 처음 만났을 때 그런 경험을 했습니다. 마리아는 텅 빈 무덤 옆에서 흐느끼고 있었고, 몸을 돌이켜 “예수께서 서 계신 것을 보았으나 예수이신 줄은 알지 못했습니다”(요한복음 20:14). 마리아는 왜 예수님을 알아보지 못했을까요? 어쩌면 눈에 고인 눈물 때문일 수도 있고, 아니면 밖이 “아직 어두웠기”(1절) 때문일 수도 있습니다. 더 가능성이 높은 것은 마리아가 마지막으로 본 예수님은 피투성이였고 매를 맞고 고문당해 죽으신 모습이었기 때문입니다. 살아 있는 예수님을 다시 볼 수 있을 거라고 전혀 기대하지 않았던 마리아는 너무도 생기가 넘치신 예수님의 모습에 이 엄청난 진실을 받아들이는 데 시간이 걸렸습니다.

그러나 예수님은 “썩지 아니할 것으로 다시 살아나셔서”(고린도전서 15:42) 거기 서 계셨습니다! 예수님이 그의 이름을 부르자 그제야 마리아는 신실한 친구이자 “선생님”(요한복음 20:16)으로 뿐 아니라 부활하신 생명의 주님으로 그를 알아보았습니다. 하나님은 항상 그분의 경이로움으로 우리를 놀라게 하십니다. 주님이 우리를 위해 죽음을 이기신 것이 무엇보다도 큰 놀라움입니다.

LOVE’S GREAT SURPRISE

In the classic sports fantasy film Field of Dreams, the character Ray Kinsella encounters his late father as an athletic younger man. Upon seeing him for the first time, Ray comments to his wife, Annie, “I only saw him years later when he was worn down by life. Look at him. . . . What do I say to him?” The scene raises a question: What would it be like to see someone we have loved— but now has died—vital and strong again?

Mary Magdalene had that experience when she first met Jesus after He rose from the dead. Mary was weeping beside the empty tomb when she turned “and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus” (JOHN 20:14). Why didn’t she recognize Him? Perhaps because of the tears in her eyes or because it “was still dark” (V. 1). More likely, it was because when she last saw Him, He’d been bloodied and beaten and tortured to death. She never expected to see Him alive again; He was so alive that it took time for the magnificent truth to sink in.

Yet there Jesus stood, “raised imperishable” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:42)! And the moment He called her by name, Mary recognized Him, not only as her faithful friend and “Teacher” (JOHN 20:16), but also as the risen Lord of life. God always has ways of astounding us with His wonders. His conquering death for us is the greatest surprise of all.

그리스도 안에 깊이 뿌리내림

사랑받는 목사 앤드류 머리(1828-1917)는 자신의 고향 남아프리카 공화국에서 다양한 질병들이 어떻게 오렌지 나무에 영향을 미치는지를 이야기했습니다. 경험이 없는 사람의 눈에는 다 괜찮아 보일지 모르지만, 수목관리 전문가는 나무를 서서히 죽이는 썩은 부위를 찾아낼 수 있습니다. 병든 나무를 살리는 유일한 방법은 뿌리로부터 줄기와 가지를 잘라내어 새 나무에 접붙이는 것입니다. 그러면 나무가 다시 잘 자라 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다.

머리 목사는 이 예를 바울 사도가 에베소 신자들에게 보낸 편지 내용과 연관시켰습니다. 바울은 로마 감옥에서 예수 그리스도의 복음을 아주 잘 정리한 편지를 썼습니다. 그의 목회자로서의 열정은 신자들이 그들 안에 계신 그리스도의 성령으로 말미암아 능력으로 강건하게 되고, 믿음으로 말미암아 주님이 그들의 마음에 계시도록 기도할 때 빛이 납니다(에베소서 3:16-17). 바울은 그들이 “사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서” 하나님의 풍성한 사랑을 온전히 알기를 간절히 바랐습니다(17-18절).

DEEPLY ROOTED IN CHRIST

Beloved pastor Andrew Murray (1828-1917) shared how in his native South Africa, various diseases affect the orange trees there. To the unpracticed eye, all may seem fine, but an expert arborist can spot the rot that heralds the tree’s slow death. The only way to save the diseased tree is to remove the stem and branches from the root and graft them onto a new one. Then the tree can thrive, producing fruit.

Murray connected this illustration to the apostle Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians. From prison in Rome, Paul wrote a letter that wonderfully summarizes the gospel of Jesus Christ. His pastoral heart shines through when he prayed that the believers would be strengthened with power through Christ’s Spirit in their inner being so that He would dwell in their hearts by faith (EPHESIANS 3:16-17). Paul longed that they’d be “rooted and established in love” and would grasp the full measure of God’s abundant love (VV. 17-18).

As believers in Jesus, our roots sink deeply into the rich soil of God’s love, where the nutrients fortify us and help us grow. And as we’re grafted onto Jesus, His Spirit helps us to produce fruit. We may have to weather storms that bend us one way or another, but we can withstand them when we’re rooted in the Source of life and love.

예수님 안에서 다른 사람 사랑하기

고등학교 운동 경기 중에 새로운 경기가 하나 생겼는데, 그것은 지금껏 볼 수 있는 가장 고무적인 경험 중의 한 가지를 선사해 줍니다. 이 경기에는 응원하는 팬과 심판, 점수판과 같이 이미 알려진 경기에서 볼 수 있는 요소가 많이 있지만 한 가지 본질적인 차이가 있습니다. 다섯 명으로 경기하는 각 팀은 장애가 없는 선수 두 명과 장애가 있는 선수 세 명으로 구성됩니다. 선수들이 어느 팀에 속해 있든 경기 중에 서로를 돕고 격려하고 응원하는 모습은 마음을 따뜻하게 해줍니다. 이 경기는 경쟁 스포츠를 통해서는 즐거움을 경험하지 못할 학생들에게 기쁨을 안겨주는 것이 주 목적입니다.

학교가 그런 방식으로 학생들을 격려하는 데에는 신중하고 현명한 리더십이 필요합니다. 그리고 그들의 노력은 성경에서 다윗 왕이 우리에게 제시한 모범을 생각나게 해줍니다.

다윗 시대에 “‘맹인과 다리 저는 사람’은 왕궁에 들어오지 못하리라” (사무엘하 5:8)는 속담이 있었는데, 이는 다윗의 적들을 은유적으로 지칭하는 말이었습니다. 그러나 다윗은 두 다리를 저는 요나단의 아들 므비보셋을 왕궁으로 데려와 그를 높여 “[그의] 상에서 함께 먹도록” 자리를 마련해주었습니다(9:7).

LOVING OTHERS IN JESUS There’s

There’s a new game in high school sports, and it’s one of the most uplifting experiences you’ll ever see. It has many of the same elements of a game known for cheering fans, referees, and a scoreboard. But there’s an essential twist: Each five-person team on the court consists of two nondisabled players and three players who have some form of disability. The activity on the court is heartwarming as players assist, encourage, and cheer for each other—no matter what team they’re on. The game is all about lifting up students who wouldn’t otherwise experience the joy of competitive sports.

It takes deliberate, wise leadership for schools to honor students in this way. And their efforts reflect an example set for us in Scripture by King David.

A common saying in David’s day was that “the ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace” (2 SAMUEL 5:8)—used metaphorically in reference to his enemies. David, however, did choose to take Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth, who had two lame feet, into his palace and honor him with a place to “eat at [his] table” (9:7).

Paul presents a clear guideline for how we’re to treat others. “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other” (ROMANS 12:10 NLT).

Let’s practice unified living—making sure to honor, in Jesus’ love, everyone we encounter.

겸손한 자의 영예

초등학교 교사인 내 친구는 종종 학생들을 인솔해 음악이나 미술 과목 교실로 이동합니다. 다른 교실로 가기 위해 줄을 서라고 하자 5학년 학생들은 자리를 놓고 서로 경쟁합니다. 일부는 앞의 좋은 자리를 차지하려고 서로 다투기도 합니다. 어느 날 친구 제니는 모두 제자리에서 뒤돌아서게 하고는 아이들을 다시 인솔하였는데 순식간에 줄의 맨 끝이 앞이 되었습니다. 아이들은 놀라며 “이게 뭐야?”라고 소리쳤습니다.

예수님은 저녁 식사 자리에서 이와 비슷한 자리 다툼을 보시고, 한 비유를 말씀하시면서 함께 온 제자들을 아주 놀라게 하셨습니다. 주님은 혼인 잔치 이야기를 하시면서 “높은 자리에 앉지 말고” 대신 “끝자리에 앉으라”고 가르치셨습니다(누가복음 14:8-10). 예수님은 “무릇 자기를 높이는 자는 낮아지고 자기를 낮추는 자는 높아지리라”(11절)는 말씀으로 그들이 갖고 있던 사회적 통념을 무너뜨리셨습니다.

특히 “성공”에 여전히 집착하는 우리의 인간적인 유혹 때문에, 지금 끝자리에 앉으면 나중엔 처음이 될 것이라는 천국의 원칙을 받아들이기가 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리가 주님의 모범을 따르면서, 주님의 도움으로 생각을 바꿔 겸손과 맨 끝과 낮아짐이 진정한 영예의 자리임을 알라고 강권하십니다.

HUMBLE HONOR

As an elementary school teacher, my friend often escorted her students to various other classrooms for subjects such as music or art. When asked to line up to make their way to another room, the fifth-grade students would jockey for position, some scrambling for the coveted spot at the head of the line. One day, Jenni surprised them by having everyone turn around and led them from what had been—just seconds before—the end of the line. Their shock was audible, “Whaaattt??”

When Jesus observed similar jockeying for position at a dinner table, He responded by telling a parable that undoubtedly surprised His fellow guests. Using a story about a wedding feast, He instructed them to “not take the place of honor” but instead “take the lowest place” (LUKE 14:8-10). Christ confounded their social norms by saying that “all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (V. 11).

This kingdom principle can be a difficult one to adopt, especially because our human temptation will be to still focus on “winning” somehow—choosing the last position now so we’ll be first later. But Jesus urges us to follow His example and look to Him for help in reorienting our thinking to see being humble, last, and lowly as truly being in the place of honor.

2천년도 더 전에, 한 다른 강력한 사람도 마음의 변화를 겪었습니다. 하나님께 반항했던 유다 왕 므낫세는 그 결과 바벨론에 포로로 끌려갔습니다. 그러나 “그가 환난을 당하여 그의 하나님 여호와께 간구”하고 “기도하였으므로” 하나님이 “그가 예루살렘에 돌아와서 다시 왕위에 앉게 하셨습니다”(역대하 33:12-13). 므낫세는 남은 통치 기간을 평화롭게 보내며, 하나님을 섬기면서 이전에 저지른 잘못을 되돌리려고 최선을 다했습니다.

므낫세의 기도를 “하나님이 받으셨습니다”(13절). 하나님은 겸손히 간구할 때 응답하십니다. 우리가 삶의 방식을 바꿔야 할 필요를 느끼고 하나님께로 향할 때, 하나님은 결코 우리를 내치지 않으십니다. 하나님은 우리가 받을 자격이 없음에도 은혜를 베푸시며, 십자가에서 부어 주신 자신을 내주는 사랑으로 우리를 새롭게 해 주십니다. 하나님과 함께 시작하는 새로운 출발입니다.

GOD OF THE FRESH START

“The Merchant of Death is Dead!” That was the headline for an obituary that may have caused Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, to make a course correction in his life. But the newspaper made a mistake—Alfred was very much alive. It was his brother Ludvig who had died. When Alfred realized he’d be remembered for a dangerous invention that claimed many lives, he decided to donate most of his significant wealth to establishing an award for those who had benefited humanity. It became known as the Nobel Prize.

More than two thousand years earlier, another powerful man had a change of heart. Manasseh, king of Judah, rebelled against God. As a result, he was taken captive to Babylon. But “in his distress he sought the favor of the Lord,” and “when he prayed,” God “brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom” (2 CHRONICLES 33:12-13). Manasseh spent the rest of his rule in peace, serving God and doing his best to undo the wrongs he’d done before.

“The Lord was moved” by Manasseh’s prayer (V. 13). God responds to humility. When we realize we need to make a change in the way we’re living and turn to Him, He never turns us away. He meets us with grace we don’t deserve and renews us with the self-giving love He poured out at the cross. New beginnings begin with Him.

지속적인 기쁨

2014년, 노르웨이의 한 마을 주민들은 사람들에게 바보 같은 모습으로 길을 건너기를 권하는 교통 안내판을 세웠습니다. 그 의도는 “바보 같은 보행자”와 구경꾼 모두에게 잠시나마 웃음을 주고 모두에게 밝은 하루를 주기 위함이었습니다. 그 잠깐의 우스꽝스러움은 낙심한 사람들에게 순간적이나마 격려가 되었습니다.

성경은 우리가 어렵고 힘든 시절을 맞아 기운을 잃고 슬픔을 맞볼 때가 있을 거라고 말합니다. 예레미야애가와 여러 시편에서 그런 고통을 볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 성경은 또한 어떤 상황에서도 지속적인 기쁨을 누릴 수 있는 일, 곧 하나님의 임재에 대해서도 말하고 있습니다. 다윗은 하나님과 함께할 영원한 미래를 바라보며 시편 16편의 구절들을 기록하였습니다. 예수님의 죽음과 부활 이후 오늘을 살아 가는 우리도 성령님을 통해 여전히 하나님이 임재 하신다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

비록 잠시 일지라도 유머나 가벼운 즐거움은 힘들 때 우리의 기분을 끌어올릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리 삶의 가장 고통스러운 시절을 견디게 하는 지속적인 기쁨을 경험하려면 우리는 우리를 훈계하시고 교훈하시는(7절) 하나님께로 “ 피해야”(1절) 합니다. 하나님은 결코 우리를 버리지 않으시고, 대신 “생명의 길을 [우리에게] 보이시고” “충만한 기쁨”을 주실 것입니다(11절).

LASTING JOY

In 2014, residents of a village in Norway erected a traffic sign that encouraged people crossing the street to do so in a silly manner. The intent was to bring a few moments of humor—for “silly walkers” and onlookers alike—to brighten one another’s days. These brief glimpses of silliness were a momentary encouragement to downcast spirits.

The Bible acknowledges that we’ll have seasons of difficulty and hardship, causing us to feel demoralized and sad. The book of Lamentations and many psalms give voice to such pain. Yet the Scriptures also point us to what can bring us lasting joy in all circumstances: the presence of God. David penned the words of Psalm 16 with an eye to an eternal future with Him. Those of us alive today—after the death and resurrection of Jesus—know God’s presence even now through the Holy Spirit.

Though they may only last a short time, humor and levity can lift our spirits in times of difficulty. However, to experience the lasting joy that sustains us through the most painful seasons of our lives, we must “take refuge” in God (V. 1) who counsels and instructs us (V. 7). He’ll never abandon us; instead, He’ll “make known to [us] the path of life” and “fill [us] with joy” (V. 11).

2018년, 탄 플립핀 목사는 자전거 사고로 엉덩이뼈가 골절돼 입원 하게 되었습니다. 의사들이 뇌진탕 여부를 확인하려고 CT 스캔을 실시했는데, 그의 뇌 앞부분에서 커다란 악성 종양이 발견되었습니다. 그 발견을 시작으로 더 큰 덩어리들이 발견되었고, 골수 이식 수술을 포함한 광범위한 치료의 긴 여정이 이어졌습니다. 플립핀은 “뇌종양을 발견하도록 하나님이 사고를 허락하셨다.”고 믿습니다.

GOD’S PERSPECTIVE

In 2018, pastor Tan Flippin had a cycling accident that landed him in the hospital with fractures to his hip. When the doctors ordered a CT scan to check for a concussion, they discovered a large malignant tumor on the front of his brain. The discovery led to a long medical journey with more masses found and extensive treatments performed—including a bone marrow transplant. Flippin believes that “God allowed the accident for my brain tumor to be found.”

Paul told the Philippians that God can use accidents and other adversities for His glory. The apostle was under Roman house arrest, awaiting trial for a capital offense before the emperor Nero. Rather than being sad, Paul rejoiced. How could he be joyful? He counted being “in chains for Christ” (PHILIPPIANS 1:13) as a privilege (V. 29). Next, looking at his adversity from God’s perspective, Paul said, “What has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (V. 12). He used his incarceration as an opportunity to share the gospel with the guards chained to him. Finally, as he preached the good news of Jesus while in bondage, his example encouraged other believers “to proclaim the gospel without fear” (V. 14).

When adversity comes, let’s trust God’s perspective and believe that—even from what’s difficult—He can bring something good.

소금 같은 대답

버트는 식당 계산서 위에 직불 카드를 올려놓았습니다. 웨이터가 카드를 집어 들고 잠시 멈춰 서서 물었습니다. “잠깐만요, ‘내가 길과 진리요 생명’ 이라는 이 자가 대체 누구인가요? 정말 자부심이 대단하군요!” 버트는 웨이터가 기독교 금융회사가 발행한 그 카드에 인쇄되어 있는 요한복음 14장 6절의 예수님의 말씀을 보고 말한다는 것을 알았습니다. 웨이터의 반응에 기분 좋아진 버트는 “이 자”가 누구인지, 그리고 그가 우리를 하나님께로 인도하는 희생 제물이라는 것을 설명해 주었습니다.

SALTY ANSWERS

Bert placed his debit card atop the restaurant bill. The waiter scooped it up and then paused to ask, “Wait, who is this guy who says, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life?’ That’s so conceited!” Bert realized the waiter was reacting to the words printed on the card by his Christian financial company— Jesus’ words from John 14:6. Amused at the waiter’s response, Bert explained the identity of “this guy” and His sacrificial offering to bring us to God.

When we encounter people who know nothing about our faith, we might respond with ridicule or even judgment. But the apostle Peter challenged us, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 PETER 3:15). Then he warned, “Do this with gentleness and respect” (V. 15). In Colossians 4:6, Paul explained the power of such a response, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Just as salt on our food enhances flavor, salty answers invite others to come closer to faith.

Questions may come in surprising settings from those completely unfamiliar with Jesus. When we respond with gentleness and grace, our answers offer a saltiness that entices questioners to yearn for more.
