상처 자국 이야기

어머니는 판다곰 얼굴 모양의 팬지꽃을 가꾸셨는데 거기에 나비가 들락거리며 바쁘게 날아다녔습니다. 어렸을 때 나는 그 나비를 무척 잡고 싶어 뒷마당에서 부엌으로 달려 들어가 큰 유리병을 움켜잡았습니다. 그런데 급히 돌아 나오다 그만 발이 걸려 넘어지면서 콘크리트 테라스에 세게 부딪쳤습니다. 병이 손목에 눌려 박살이 나면서 거기에 보기 흉한 깊은 상처가 나 열여덟 바늘이나 꿰매야 했습니다. 지금 내 손목에는 애벌레가 가로질러 기어가는 모양의 상처 자국이 남아 있는데 거기에는 다쳤던 이야기와 치료받은 이야기가 모두 담겨 있습니다.

예수님도 돌아가신 후 제자들에게 나타나셨을 때 상처 자국을 지니고 계셨습니다. 요한은 도마가 “예수님의 손의 못 자국”을 보고 싶어 하자 예수님이 도마에게 “네 손가락을 이리 내밀어 내 손을 보고 네 손을 내밀어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보라”(요한복음 20:25,27) 고 하셨다고 전하고 있습니다. 그는 자신이 바로 그 예수님이라는 것을 밝히시기 위해 그때까지도 확연히 볼 수 있는 고통의 상처 자국을 가지고 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나셨습니다.

예수님의 상처 자국은 그분이 구주시라는 증거이며 우리 구원의 이야기를 말해줍니다. 그분의 손과 발에 뚫린 자국과 움푹 들어간 허리는 우리를 위해 당하시고 참아내셔서 마침내 치유가 이루어진 고통의 이야기를 드러내 보여줍니다. 예수님이 그렇게 하셨기에 우리는 그분께로 회복되어 온전하게 될 수 있습니다.

한 번이라도 그리스도의 상처 자국 이야기에 대해 깊이 생각해본 적이 있습니까?

오, 예수님, 저에게, 그리고 세상 사람들에게 들려주시는 예수님의 상처 이야기가 얼마나 좋은지요. 그 상처 이야기로 예수님을 더욱 사랑하게 되기를 원합니다.

Scar Stories

The butterfly flitted in and out of my mother’s panda-faced pansies. As I child, I longed to catch it. I raced from our backyard into our kitchen and grabbed a glass jar, but on my hasty return, I tripped and hit the concrete patio hard. The jar smashed under my wrist and left an ugly slash that would require eighteen stitches to close. Today the scar crawls like a caterpillar across my wrist, telling the story of both wounding and healing.

When Jesus appeared to the disciples after His death, He brought His scars. John reports Thomas wanting to see “the nail marks in his hands” and Jesus inviting Thomas to “put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side” (JOHN 20:25, 27). In order to demonstrate He was the same Jesus, He rose from the dead with the scars of His suffering still visible.

The scars of Jesus prove Him to be the Savior and tell the story of our salvation. The pierced marks through His hands and feet and the hollow in His side reveal a story of pain inflicted, endured, and then healed—for us. He did it so that we might be restored to Him and made whole.

어둠 속의 빛

‘믿음의 세대들’이라는 책에서 미스터 배는 하나님의 신실하심과 어둠을 뚫는 복음의 능력에 대해 설명하고 있습니다. 그의 할아버지와 부모님, 그리고 자신의 가족 모두 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 전했다는 이유로 박해를 받았습니다. 그런데 한 가지 흥미로운 일이 일어났습니다. 미스터 배가 친구에게 하나님에 대해 얘기했다는 이유로 투옥되었는데 이 일로 그의 믿음이 더 커졌다는 것입니다. 같은 일이 그의 부모에게도 일어났습니다. 선고를 받고 강제수용소에 갇혔을 때 그들은 수용소 안에서도 그리스도의 사랑을 계속 전했습니다. 미스터 배는 요한복음 1장 5절의 약속이 진실임을 알게 되었습니다. “그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치니, 어둠이 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다”(새번역).

예수님이 붙잡혀 십자가에 돌아가시기 전, 제자들에게 그들이 겪게 될 환난에 대해 경고하셨습니다. “아버지와 나를 모르기 때문에 그런 짓을 할”(16:3, 현대인의 성경) 사람들에 의해 제자들이 배척을 당하게 되리라는 것이었습니다. 그러나 예수님은 위로의 말씀도 함께 주셨습니다. “세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하나 담대하라 내가 세상을 이기었노라”(33절).

많은 그리스도인들이 미스터 배의 가족들이 겪었던 정도의 박해를 당하지는 않았지만 우리도 고난을 당하리라 예상할 수 있습니다. 그렇지만 절망이나 분노에 억눌릴 필요는 없습니다. 우리에게는 보혜사, 곧 예수님이 보내주시겠다고 약속하신 성령님이 계십니다. 우리는 성령님을 의지하여 그분의 인도와 위안을 받을 수 있으며(7절), 하나님의 임재에서 오는 권능으로 힘든 시기에도 흔들리지 않을 수 있습니다.

A Light in the Darkness

In These Are the Generations, Mr. Bae describes God’s faithfulness and the power of the gospel to penetrate the darkness. His grandfather, parents, and his own family were all persecuted for sharing their faith in Christ. But an interesting thing happened when Mr. Bae was imprisoned for telling a friend about God: his faith grew. The same was true for his parents when they were sentenced to a concentration camp—they continued to share Christ’s love even there. Mr. Bae found the promise of John 1:5 to be true: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Before His arrest and crucifixion, Jesus warned His disciples about the trouble they’d face. They would be rejected by people who “will do such things because they have not known the Father or me” (16:3). But Jesus offered words of comfort: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (V. 33).

While many believers in Jesus haven’t experienced persecution on the level of that endured by the family of Mr. Bae, we can expect to face trouble. But we don’t have to give in to discouragement or resentment. We have a Helper—the Holy Spirit Jesus promised to send. We can turn to Him for guidance and comfort (V. 7). The power of God’s presence can hold us steady in dark times. LINDA WASHINGTON

가보지 않은 길

사람들이 내게 5개년 계획이 있는지 물어봅니다. 그런데 한 번도 가보지 않은 “앞에 놓인 길” 5년을 어떻게 계획할 수 있을까요?

나는 스탠포드대학에서 교목을 지냈던 1960년대를 회상합니다. 대학 때 체육교육을 전공했고 또 신나게 놀다보니 학자가 될 정도의 성적을 얻지 못했습니다. 나 는 나 의 새 로 운 지 위 에 완전히 부적합하다고 느꼈습니다. 거의 매일 어둠 속을 더듬는 맹인처럼 캠퍼스를 어슬렁거리며 하나님께 어떻게 해야 할지를 물었습니다. 어느 날 한 학생이 “난데없이” 나에게 남학생 동아리에서 성경공부를 인도해 달라는 부탁을 했습니다. 그것이 시작이었습니다.

하나님은 어느 한 지점에 서서 길을 가리켜주시는 분이 아닙니다. 하나님은 안내인이지 표지판이 아니십니다. 그분은 우리와 함께 걸으시며 우리가 한 번도 생각해보지 않았던 길로 인도하십니다. 우리가 할 일은 하나님과 함께 걸어가는 것뿐입니다.

그 길이 쉽지만은 않을 것이고 거기엔 “험한 곳들”도 있을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 “암흑이......광명이 되게 하며” 우리를 “버리지 아니하겠다”(이사야 42:16)고 약속하셨습니다. 그분은 우리가 가는 길 내내 함께하실 것입니다.

바울 사도의 말대로 하나님은 “우리가 구하거나 생각하는 모든 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실”(에베소서 3:20) 수 있습니다. 우리가 계획을 세우고 앞일을 구상할 수는 있지만, 우리 주님의 상상력은 우리의 계획을 훨씬 초월합니다. 우리는 우리의 계획을 붙잡았던 손을 풀고 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지 보아야 합니다.

A Road Not Traveled

People ask me if I have a five-year plan. How can I plan five years “down the road” on a road I’ve never traveled?

I think back to the 1960s when I was a minister to students at Stanford University. I’d been a physical education major in college and had a lot of fun, but I left no record of being a scholar. I felt wholly inadequate in my new position. Most days I wandered around the campus, a blind man groping in the darkness, asking God to show me what to do. One day a student “out of the blue” asked me to lead a Bible study in his fraternity. It was a beginning.

God doesn’t stand at a juncture and point the way: He’s a guide, not a signpost. He walks with us, leading us down paths we never envisioned. All we have to do is walk alongside Him.

The path won’t be easy; there’ll be “rough places” along the way. But God has promised that He will “turn the darkness into light” and “will not forsake” us (ISAIAH 42:16). He’ll be with us all the way.

Paul said that God is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (EPHESIANS 3:20). We can scheme and envision, but our Lord’s imagination far transcends our plans. We must hold them loosely and see what God has in mind. DAVID H. ROPER

전사처럼 살라

18세의 엠마는 소셜미디어를 통해 신실하게 예수님을 전하고 있습니다. 그러나 괴롭히기를 좋아하는 사람들이 그리스도로 기뻐하고 그분을 아주 사랑하는 그녀를 헐뜯고 있습니다. 그녀의 외모를 가지고 험담을 하는 사람들이 있는가 하면, 하나님을 전심으로 섬기는 것에 대해 지능이 모자란다고 말하는 사람들도 있습니다. 그런 불쾌한 말들이 엠마의 마음에 깊이 상처를 줬지만 그럼에도 그녀는 계속해서 담대한 믿음과 예수님과 다른 사람들을 향한 사랑으로 복음을 전하고 있습니다. 하지만 이따금 엠마는 자신의 정체성과 가치가 다른 사람들의 비판에 의해 결정된다는 생각이 들기도 합니다. 그럴 때마다 하나님께 도움을 구하고, 자기를 힘들게 하는 사람들을 위해 기도하며, 성경말씀을 묵상하고, 성령님이 주시는 용기와 확신으로 견뎌나가고 있습니다.

기드온은 잔인하게 괴롭히는 미디안 사람들과 맞서게 되었습니다(사사기 6:1-10). 하나님은 기드온을 “큰 용사”라고 부르셨지만 그는 의심과 스스로 부여한 한계와 불안감을 떨쳐버리기 위해 힘겹게 씨름하고 있었습니다(11-15절). 기드온은 몇 차례에 걸쳐 주님이 함께 하시는지 그리고 자신이 과연 합당한 사람인지 의문을 가졌지만, 결국 믿음으로 주님 앞에 엎드렸습니다.

우리가 하나님을 신뢰하면 우리에게 주시는 그분의 말씀을 사실로 믿으며 그대로 살아갈 수 있습니다. 우리가 박해로 우리의 정체성이 의심될 때에도 사랑이 많으신 하나님 아버지께서 우리와 함께 계심을 확실히 보여주시고 우리를 대신해서 싸워주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분의 절대적인 사랑으로 무장되고, 그분의 무한한 은혜로 호위 받고, 그분의 변함없는 진리로 무장된 강한 전사처럼 살아갈 수 있다고 확실하게 말씀해주십니다.

Walk Like a Warrior

Eighteen-year-old Emma faithfully talks about Jesus on social media, even though bullies have criticized her joy and enthusiastic love for Christ. Some have attacked her with remarks about her physical appearance. Others have suggested a lack of intelligence because of her devotion to God. Though the unkind words cut deep into Emma’s heart, she continues to spread the gospel with bold faith and love for Jesus and others. Sometimes, though, she’s tempted to believe her identity and worth are determined by the criticism of others. When that happens, she asks God for help, prays for her persecutors, meditates on the words of Scripture, and perseveres with Spirit-empowered courage and confidence.

Gideon faced fierce tormentors—the Midianites (JUDGES 6:1–10). Though God called him a “mighty warrior,” Gideon struggled to let go of his doubt, self-imposed limitations, and insecurities (VV. 11–15). On more than one occasion, he questioned the Lord’s presence and his own qualifications, but eventually surrendered in faith.

When we trust God, we can live like we believe what He says about us is true. Even when persecution tempts us to doubt our identity, our loving Father confirms His presence and fights on our behalf. He affirms we can walk like mighty warriors armed with His absolute love, guarded by His endless grace, and secured in His reliable truth. XOCHITL DIXON

거리 봉사에 나서기

샌프란시스코의 의료계 종사자들이 거리로 나와 의료 서비스를 하면서 오피오이드(아편 같은 진통 마취제) 중독으로 시달리는 노숙자들에게 중독 치료약을 나누어주고 있습니다. 이 프로그램은 주사기로 약물을 주입하는 노숙자들의 수가 증가하고 있는 데에 따른 대책으로 시작되었습니다. 보통은 의사가 병원에서 환자가 찾아오기를 기다리지만, 반대로 환자에게 가서 진료를 하면 환자들이 이동해야 하는 어려움이나 약속시간을 기억해야 하는 번거로움을 겪지 않아도 됩니다.

나는 의료계 종사자들이 자진해서 치료가 필요한 사람들을 찾아가는 것을 보며 우리가 어려움에 처해 있을 때 예수님께서 어떻게 우리를 찾아오셨는지를 생각해 봅니다. 예수님은 사역하실 때 종교지도자들이 쉽게 무시해버리는 이들을 찾으시고, “죄인과 세리들”과 함께 식사도 하셨습니다(마가복음 2:16). 왜 그렇게 하시는지 누가 묻자 예수님은 “건강한 자에게는 의사가 쓸 데 없고 병든 자에게라야 쓸 데 있느니라”(17절)고 대답하셨습니다. 예수님은 이어서 의인이 아니라 죄인을 불러 주님과 사귐이 있게 될 거라고 하셨습니다.

우리 모두가 “병들어 있고” 의사가 필요하다는 것을 깨달으면 (로마서 3:10), 예수님이 “죄인과 세리들”, 곧 우리들과 함께 기꺼이 식사하신다는 사실이 더 감사한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 예수님은 이제 차례를 바꾸어 샌프란시스코의 의료계 종사자들처럼 우리가 그분의 “거리 봉사자”가 되어 어려움에 처해 있는 사람들에게 예수님의 구원의 메시지를 전하게 하셨습니다.

Join the Street Team

City health workers in San Francisco are taking medical care to the streets to supply the homeless who are suffering from opioid addiction with medicine to treat their addiction. The program began in response to the rising number of homeless who are injecting. Customarily, doctors wait for patients to come to a clinic. By taking medical care to the afflicted instead, patients don’t have to overcome the challenges of transportation or needing to remember the appointment.

The health workers’ willingness to go to those in need of care reminds me of the way Jesus has come to us in our need. In His ministry, Jesus sought out those who the religious elite were quick to ignore: He ate with “sinners and tax collectors” (MARK 2:16). When asked why He would do that, Jesus replied, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick” (V. 17). He went on to say that His intention was to call sinners, not the righteous, into relationship with Him.

When we realize that we’re all “sick” and in need of a doctor (ROMANS 3:10), we can better appreciate Jesus’s willingness to eat with the “sinners and tax collectors”—us. In turn, like the health care workers in San Francisco, Jesus appointed us as His “street team” to take His saving message to others in need. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

은혜의 씨앗들

인도에서 어떤 사람이 거의 40년 동안 초토화된 모래 황무지를 일구어 살아있는 땅으로 만들었습니다. 그 사람은 자신이 아주 좋아했던 강의 섬이 침식과 변화하는 생태계에 의해 파괴된 것을 보고는 한 번에 한 그루씩 대나무와 목화를 번갈아 심기 시작했습니다. 지금은 1300에이커(약 5평방킬로미터) 이상 되는 면적의 우거진 숲에 많은 야생 생물들이 살고 있습니다. 그런데 그 사람은 땅을 재생시킨 일이 자신이 한 것이 아니라고 주장합니다. 그는 이 자연세계가 놀랍게 설계되어 있다는 것을 인정하면서, 씨앗이 바람에 실려 비옥한 땅으로 운반된다는 사실에 경탄합니다. 새와 동물도 씨앗을 흩뜨리는데 한 몫 하고 있고, 강 또한 풀과 나무를 우거지게 하는데 도움을 준다는 것입니다.

창조는 우리가 이해할 수도 통제할 수도 없는 방법으로 이루어집니다. 하나님 나라에도 똑같은 원리가 적용된다고 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “하나님의 나라는 사람이 씨를 땅에 뿌림과 같으니...... 씨가 나서 자라되 어떻게 그리 되는지를 알지 못하느니라”(마가복음 4:26-27). 하나님은 우리의 손을 빌리지 않고 순전히 선물로 생명과 치유를 이 세상에 주십니다. 하나님이 원하시는 무엇이든 우리가 하면 생명이 솟아나는 것을 보게 됩니다. 우리는 모든 것이 하나님 은혜에서 비롯된다는 것을 압니다.

우리는 다른 사람의 마음을 변화시키는 일이나, 열심히 노력해서 반드시 어떤 결과를 보여줄 책임이 우리에게 있다고 믿기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 그런 진을 빼는 심적 압박감 아래 살지 않아도 됩니다. 하나님께서 우리의 모든 씨앗을 자라게 해주시기 때문입니다. 그것은 모두 다 은혜입니다.

Seeds of Grace

For nearly four decades, a man in India has worked to bring a scorched, sandy wasteland back to life. Seeing how erosion and changing ecosystems had destroyed the river island he loved, he began to plant one tree at a time, bamboo then cotton. Now, lush forests and abundant wildlife fill more than 1,300 acres. However, the man insists the rebirth was not something he made happen. Acknowledging the amazing way the natural world is designed, he marvels at how seeds are carried to fertile ground by the wind. Birds and animals participate in sowing them as well, and rivers also contribute in helping plants and trees flourish.

Creation works in ways we can’t comprehend or control. According to Jesus, this same principle applies to the kingdom of God. “This is what the kingdom of God is like,” Jesus said. “A man scatters seed on the ground . . . the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how” (MARK 4:26–27). God brings life and healing into the world as pure gifts, without our manipulation. We do whatever God asks us of us, and then we watch life emerge. We know that everything flows from His grace.

It’s tempting to believe we’re responsible to change someone’s heart or ensure results for our faithful efforts. However, we need not live under that exhausting pressure. God makes all our seeds grow. It’s all grace. WINN COLLIER

하나로 엮어질 때

한 친구가 40년도 넘게 가지고 있던 실내 화초 하나를 내게 주었습니다. 화초는 내 키만 하였고 세 갈레의 가늘고 긴 줄기에 커다란 잎들이 나 있었습니다. 시간이 지나면서 잎들이 무거워져 줄기 세 개 모두가 굽어지면서 바닥을 향했습니다. 그래서 나는 화분 밑에 쐐기를 박고 햇빛을 받아 잎들이 위로 향하게 해서 잘못된 모양을 바로 잡으려고 화분을 창문 가까이 두었습니다.

화분을 받은 지 얼마 되지 않아 동네 어느 사무실의 대기실에서 똑같은 화초를 보았습니다. 그 화초 역시 가늘고 긴 세 줄기로 자라고 있었습니다. 그런데 그 세 줄기는 서로 엮어져 하나의 더 크고 견고한 줄기를 이루고 있었습니다. 그 화초는 아무런 지지대가 없이도 똑바로 서 있었습니다.

두 사람이 여러 해를 같은 “화분”에서 지내면서도 서로 떨어져 자라면 하나님께서 둘이 누리라고 주신 유익들을 조금 밖에 얻지 못하게 됩니다. 하지만 그 둘이 하나님과 함께 잘 엮어져 살아간다면 보다 더 큰 안정감과 친밀감을 얻게 되고 관계는 더 튼튼해질 것입니다. “세 겹줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 아니하느니라”(전도서 4:12).

화초처럼 결혼생활과 친구관계도 양육이 필요합니다. 그런 관계들을 잘 돌보기 위해서는 영적으로 화합하여 모든 중요한 관계들의 중심에 하나님이 계시도록 해야 합니다. 하나님은 우리가 서로 행복한 유대관계를 유지하는데 가장 필요한 사랑과 은혜를 끝없이 공급해주는 분이십니다.

Braided Together

A friend gave me a houseplant she’d owned for more than forty years. The plant was equal to my height, and it produced large leaves from three separate spindly trunks. Over time, the weight of the leaves had caused all three of the stalks to curve down toward the floor. To straighten them, I put a wedge under the plant’s pot and placed it near a window so the sunlight could draw the leaves upward and help cure its bad posture.

Shortly after receiving the plant, I saw one just like it in a waiting room at a local business. It also grew from three long skinny stalks, but they’d been braided together to form a larger, more solid core. This plant stood upright without any help.

Any two people may stay in the same “pot” for years, yet grow apart and experience fewer of the benefits God wants them to enjoy. When their lives are woven together with God, however, there is a greater sense of stability and closeness. Their relationship will grow stronger. “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (ECCLESIASTES 4:12).

Like houseplants, marriages and friendships require some nurturing. Tending to these relationships involves merging spiritually so that God is present at the center of each important bond. He’s an endless supply of love and grace—the things we need most to stay happily united with each other. JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

그저 한 번 손을 댄 것뿐인데

그저 손을 댔을 뿐인데 콜린에게 큰 변화가 일어났습니다. 콜린은 몇 안 되는 팀원들과 자선활동을 준비하고 있었는데, 활동 장소가 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 적대감을 보이는 지역이라 스트레스가 점점 쌓여갔습니다. 그래서 어느 팀원에게 그의 불안감에 대해 얘기하자 그 친구는 하던 일을 멈추더니 그의 어깨에 손을 얹고 격려의 말 몇 마디를 해주었습니다. 콜린은 지금 그때 잠깐 만져주었던 것이 하나님께서 그와 함께 하신다는 단순한 진리를 강하게 상기시켜 주는 전환점이 되었다고 여기고 있습니다.

예수님과 가까운 친구이자 제자였던 요한은 복음을 전했다는 이유로 황량한 밧모섬으로 유배되었을 때 “나팔 소리 같은 큰 음성”(요한계시록 1:10)을 들었습니다. 그 놀라운 일 후에 주님이 환상으로 나타나시자 요한은 “그의 발 앞에 엎드러져 죽은 자 같이 되었습니다.” 그러나 요한은 그 무서운 순간에도 위로와 용기를 얻고 이렇게 기록했습니다. “그가 오른손을 내게 얹고 이르시되 두려워하지 말라 나는 처음이요 마지막이니”(17절).

하나님은 우리를 편안하게 머물던 곳에서 데리고 나와 새로운 것들을 보여주시고 우리의 지경을 넓히시며 우리가 자라도록 도와주십니다. 또한 모든 상황을 헤쳐 나가도록 용기와 위로를 주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 시련을 당할 때 홀로 내버려두지 않으십니다. 그분은 만물을 다스리십니다. 우리는 그분 손 안에 있습니다.

Just a Touch

It was just a touch, but it made all the difference to Colin. As his small team was preparing to do charitable work in a region known for hostility to believers in Jesus, his stress level began to rise. When he shared his worries with a teammate, his friend stopped, placed his hand on his shoulder, and shared a few encouraging words with him. Colin now looks back on that brief touch as a turning point, a powerful reminder of the simple truth that God was with him.

John, the close friend and disciple of Jesus, had been banished to the desolate island of Patmos for preaching the gospel, when he heard “a loud voice like a trumpet” (REVELATION 1:10). That startling event was followed by a vision of the Lord Himself, and John “fell at his feet as though dead.” But in that frightening moment, he received comfort and courage. John wrote, “He placed his right hand on me and said, ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last’” (V. 17).

God takes us out of our comfort zone to show us new things, to stretch us, to help us grow. But He also brings the courage and comfort to go through every situation. He won’t leave us alone in our trials. He has everything under control. He has us in His hands. TIM GUSTAFSON

“이게 바로 나야”라는 강렬한 메시지의 노래는 P.T. 바넘의 생애와 그의 순회 서커스단을 대략적으로 다루어 크게 흥행한 뮤지컬 영화 ‘위대한 쇼맨’의 잊지 못할 주제곡입니다. 영화 속에서 사회규범을 따르지 못한다는 이유로 조롱당하고 학대당하는 인물들이 부르는 노래의 가사에서, 말을 사람을 죽이는 총알이나 상처를 남기는 칼과 같다고 묘사합니다.

이 노래가 굉장한 인기가 있었다는 것은 얼마나 많은 사람들이 말이라는 흉기에 의해 안 보이지만 실제로 받은 상처를 안고 살아가고 있는지를 말해 줍니다.

야고보는 우리의 말이 파괴적이고 오래 지속되는 해를 끼칠 위험이 있음을 알고, 혀를 “쉬지 아니하는 악이요 죽이는 독이 가득한 것이라”(야고보서 3:8)고 말하고 있습니다. 야고보는 이토록 강하게 비교를 하면서 성도들이 말의 엄청난 위력을 절실히 깨달아야 한다고 강조했습니다. 그는 더 나아가 어떤 때는 하나님을 찬양했다가 다음에는 하나님의 형상으로 지음 받은 사람들에게 해를 끼치는 모순에 대해서도 강조했습니다 (9-10절).

“이게 바로 나야”라는 노래도 성경이 말하는 대로 우리 모두가 영광스러운 존재임을 강조하면서, 비슷하게 언어폭력의 실상에 대해 도전하고 있습니다. 성경은 인간 각자에게 고유한 존엄성과 아름다움이 있다는 것을 분명히 말해주는데, 이는 우리의 겉모습이나 어떤 업적 때문이 아니라 우리 각자는 하나님께서 아름답게 지으신 독특한 작품이기 때문입니다(시편 139:14). 우리가 서로에게, 그리고 서로에 대해서 하는 말에는 이렇게 엄연한 사실을 다시 한 번 확실하게 해줄 수 있는 힘이 들어있습니다.

This Is Me

The powerful song “This Is Me” is an unforgettable show tune featured in The Greatest Showman , the smash movie musical loosely based on the life of P.T. Barnum and his traveling circus. The lyrics, sung by characters in the film who’d suffered verbal taunts and abuse for failing to conform to societal norms, describe words as destructive bullets and knives that leave scars.

The song’s popularity points to how many people bear the invisible, but real, wounds caused by weaponized words.

James understood the potential danger of our words to cause destructive and long-lasting harm, calling the tongue “a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (JAMES 3:8). By using this surprisingly strong comparison, James emphasized the urgent need for believers to recognize the immense power of their words. Even more, he highlighted the inconsistency of praising God with one breath and then injuring people who are made in God’s image with the next (VV. 9–10).

The song “This Is Me” similarly challenges the truth of verbal attacks by insisting that we’re all glorious—a truth the Bible affirms. The Bible establishes the unique dignity and beauty of each human being, not because of outward appearance or anything we have done, but because we are each beautifully designed by God—His unique masterpieces (PSALM 139:14). And our words to each other and about each other have the power to reinforce that reassuring reality. LISA SAMRA

발에게 좋은 소식

“발 역사상 가장 편한 양말”이라는 광고를 보고 웃음이 나왔습니다. 그런 다음 광고하는 사람은 발에 좋다는 주장을 더 펴면서, 양말이 노숙자 임시 숙소에서 가장 많이 찾는 의류 품목이기 때문에 한 켤레가 판매될 때마다 회사가 어려운 사람들에게 한 켤레를 기부한다고 말했습니다.

예수님이 38년 동안이나 걸을 수 없었던 사람의 발을 고쳐주셨을 때 (요한복음 5:2-8) 그 사람의 얼굴에 번졌을 웃음을 상상해 보십시오. 이번에는 예수님이 아주 오랫동안 아무런 도움을 받지 못하고 살아온 사람의 발이나 마음을 고쳐주시는 것을 보고도 감동 받지 못하는 성전 관리들의 얼굴에 나타난 완전히 다른 표정을 상상해 보십시오. 관리들은 그 사람과 예수님이 안식일에 아무 일도 하면 안 된다는 율법을 어겼다고 비난했습니다(9-10,16-17절). 그들은 규칙을 보았지만 예수님은 거기서 자비가 필요한 사람을
보셨습니다.

이 때 그 사람은 새 발을 주신 분이 누구인지도 몰랐습니다. 나중에서야 그는 자기를 고치신 분이 예수님이라고 말할 수 있었습니다(13-15절). 바로 이 예수님이 그 후에 자신의 발을 나무에 못 박게 하시며, 고침 받은 그 사람과 우리 모두에게 몸도 생각도 마음도 다 망가져버린 인류 역사에 가장 좋은 소식을 전해주셨습니다.

Good News for Feet

The ad brought a smile to my face: “The most comfortable socks in the history of feet.” Then, extending its claim of good news for feet even further, the advertiser said that because socks remain the most requested clothing item at homeless shelters, for every pair of socks purchased the company would donate a pair to someone in need.

Imagine the smile when Jesus healed the feet of a man who hadn’t been able to walk for thirty-eight years (JOHN 5:2–8). Now imagine the opposite look on the faces of the temple officials who weren’t impressed by Jesus’s care for the feet or heart of someone who had gone without help for so long. They accused the man and Jesus of breaking a religious law that allows no work to be done on the Sabbath (VV. 9–10, 16–17). They saw rules where Jesus saw the need for mercy.

At this point the man didn’t even know who had given him new feet. Only later would he be able to say that it was Jesus who had made him well (VV. 13–15)—the same Jesus who would allow His own feet to be nailed to a tree to offer that man—and us—the best news in the history of broken bodies, minds, and hearts.
