성령님과 동행하며

‘1만 시간’. 작가 말콤 글래드웰은 어느 한 분야에서 숙련이 되려면 1만 시간이 걸린다고 말합니다. 역사상 아무리 위대한 미술가나 음악가들도 뛰어난 선천적 재능만으로는 그들이 나중에 이루었던 그런 수준의 전문성에는 이를 수 없었습니다. 그들은 하루도 빠짐없이 자신들의 일에 몰두해야 했습니다.

이상하게 생각될 수도 있지만, 성령의 능력 안에 사는 것을 배울 때에도 이와 비슷한 사고방식이 필요합니다. 바울은 갈라디아서에서 교회가 하나님을 위해 구별될 것을 권면합니다. 그러나 이것은 단지 율법에 순종하는 것만으로는 이룰 수 없다고 말합니다. 우리는 성령님과 동행하도록 부름 받았습니다. 바울이 갈라디아서 5장 16절에서 사용한 “행하다” 라는 헬라어 단어를 직역하면 어딘가를 두루 걷거나 여행하는 것을 의미합니다(페리파테오). 바울에게는 성령님과 동행한다는 것은 단지 성령의 능력을 한 번 경험하고 마는 것이 아니라 날마다 성령님과 삶의 여정을 함께 하는 것을 의미했습니다.

매일 성령으로 충만하기를 기도합시다. 그리고 성령님이 권고하시고 인도하시며 위로하실 때에, 그리고 우리와 그저 함께 계실 때에도 성령의 역사에 순종하도록 기도합시다. 그리고 이와 같이 “성령의 인도하시는 바가 되면”(18절) 우리는 성령의 음성을 더 잘 듣고, 그분의 인도하심을 더 잘 따를 수 있게 됩니다. 성령님, 오늘, 그리고 매일 성령님과 동행하게 하소서!

Walking with the Spirit

Ten thousand hours. That’s how long author Malcolm Gladwell suggests it takes to become skillful at any craft. Even for the greatest artists and musicians of all time, their tremendous inborn talent wasn’t enough to achieve the level of expertise that they would eventually attain. They needed to immerse themselves in their craft every single day.

As strange as it might seem, we need a similar mentality when it comes to learning to live in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Galatians, Paul encourages the church to be set apart for God. But Paul explained that this couldn’t be achieved through merely obeying a set of rules. Instead we’re called to walk with the Holy Spirit. The Greek word that Paul uses for “walk” in Galatians 5:16 literally means to walk around and around something, or to journey (peripateo). So for Paul, walking with the Spirit meant journeying with the Spirit each day—it’s not just a one-time experience of His power.

May we pray to be filled with the Spirit daily—to yield to the Spirit’s work as He counsels, guides, comforts, and is simply there with us. And as we’re “led by the Spirit” in this way (V. 18), we become better and better at hearing His voice and following His leading. Holy Spirit, may I walk with You today, and every day! - PETER CHIN

1840년대에 전기 시계가 발명된 이후로 많은 것이 바뀌었습니다. 지금은 스마트 워치, 스마트 폰, 그리고 랩탑으로 시간을 맞춥니다. 전반적인 삶의 속도가 빠르게 돌아가고 “산보하는” 걸음걸이마저 빨라졌습니다. 학자들은 도시에서 이런 현상이 더 두드러지며, 우리의 건강에 부정적인 영향을 미친다고 합니다. 리차드 와이즈만 교수는 말합니다. “우리는 점점 더 빠르게 움직이고 사람들에게도 가능한 빠르게 응답합니다. 그러다 보니 무슨 일이든 당장 일어나야 한다고 생각하기에 이르렀습니다.”

가장 오래된 시편 기자의 한 사람인 모세도 시간을 되돌아보며, 우리에게 하나님이 인생의 속도를 조절하시는 분이라고 알려줍니다. 그는 “주의 목전에는 천 년이 지나간 어제 같으며 밤의 한 순간 같을 뿐임이니이다”(시편 90:4)라고 기록했습니다.

그러므로 시간을 잘 관리하는 비결은 더 빠르거나 느리게 하는 것이 아닙니다. 비결은 하나님 안에 거하며 그분과 더 많은 시간을 보내고, 그 다음에 사람들과 조화를 이루며 사는 것입니다. 그러나 우리를 지으시고(139:13) 우리의 목적과 계획을 아시는(16절) 그분과 보조를 맞추는 것이 먼저입니다.

이 세상에서의 우리의 시간은 영원하지 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 시계를 보는 것보다는 매일을 하나님께 드림으로써 시간을 지혜 있게 관리할 수 있습니다. 모세는 “우리에게 우리 날 계수함을 가르치사 지혜로운 마음을 얻게 하소서”(90:12)라고 말했습니다. 그러면 우리는 하나님과 함께 지금부터 영원히 시간을 맞추며 살 수가 있습니다.

Slowing Down Time

A lot has changed since the electric clock was invented in the 1840s. We now keep time on smart watches, smart phones, and laptops. The entire pace of life seems faster—with even our “leisurely” walking speeding up. This is especially true in cities and can have a negative effect on health, scholars say. “We’re just moving faster and faster and getting back to people as quickly as we can,” Professor Richard Wiseman observed. “That’s driving us to think everything has to happen now.”

Moses, the writer of one of the oldest of the Bible’s psalms, reflected on time. He reminds us that God controls life’s pace. “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night,” he wrote (PSALM 90:4).

The secret to time management, therefore, isn’t to go faster or slower. It’s to abide in God, spending more time with Him. Then we get in step with each other, but first with Him— the One who formed us (139:13) and knows our purpose and plans (V. 16).

Our time on earth won’t last forever. Yet we can manage it wisely, not by watching the clock, but by giving each day to God. As Moses said, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (90:12). Then, with God we’ll always be on time, now and forever. - PATRICIA RAYBON

모두에게 긍휼이 필요하다

예수님을 막 믿기 시작한 제프는 대학을 갓 졸업하고 대형 석유 회사에서 일하게 되었습니다. 세일즈맨으로 출장을 자주 다니던 그는 출장 중에 사람들의 이야기를 듣게 되었는데 그 중엔 가슴 아픈 사연들도 많았습니다. 그는 고객들에게 가장 필요한 것이 석유가 아니라 긍휼이라는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 그들에게는 ‘하나님’이 필요했습니다. 그래서 제프는 하나님의 마음에 대해 더 많이 배우기 위해 신학을 공부했고 나중에 목사가 되었습니다.

사람을 불쌍히 여기는 제프의 마음은 예수님에게서 온 것입니다. 마태복음 9:27-33에서 우리는 맹인 두 사람과 귀신 들린 한 사람이 기적적으로 고침 받는 것을 보며 그리스도의 긍휼하심을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 주님은 이 땅에서 사역을 하시는 동안 “모든 도시와 마을에 두루 다니시면서”(35절) 복음을 전파하고 병을 고치셨습니다. 왜 그러셨을까요? “(예수께서) 무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기시니 이는 그들이 목자 없는 양과 같이 고생하며 기진함이라”(36절).

오늘날 세상은 여전히 구세주의 따뜻한 돌보심을 필요로 하는 고난 받고 상처받은 사람들로 가득합니다. 목자가 자기 양들을 인도하고 보호하며 보살피듯이 예수님도 누구든지 그에게로 나아오는 이들에게 긍휼을 베푸십니다(11:28). 인생의 어떤 단계, 어떤 상황에 있든지 우리는 주님 안에서 부드러움과 보살핌이 넘치는 마음을 가질 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님의 사랑의 긍휼하심을 입을 때 우리도 그것을 다른 사람에게 몹시 전하고 싶어집니다.

Everyone Needs Compassion

When Jeff was a new believer in Jesus and fresh out of college, he worked for a major oil company. In his role as a salesman, he traveled; and in his travels he heard people’s stories—many of them heartbreaking. He realized that what his customers most needed wasn’t oil, but compassion. They needed God. This led Jeff to attend seminary to learn more about the heart of God and eventually to become a pastor.

Jeff’s compassion had its source in Jesus. In Matthew 9:27–33 we get a glimpse of Christ’s compassion in the miraculous healing of two blind men and one demonpossessed man. Throughout His earthly ministry, He went about preaching the gospel and healing “through all the towns and villages” (V. 35). Why? “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (V. 36).

The world today is still full of troubled and hurting people who need the Savior’s gentle care. Like a shepherd who leads, protects, and cares for his sheep, Jesus extends His compassion to all who come to Him (11:28). No matter where we are in life and what we’re experiencing, in Him we find a heart overflowing with tenderness and care. And when we’ve been a beneficiary of God’s loving compassion, we can’t help but want to extend it to others. - ALYSON KIEDA

찬양하는 삶

월리스 스테그너의 어머니는 쉰 살에 돌아가셨습니다. 월리스는 팔순이 되어 그의 어머니에게 쓴 “너무 늦은 편지”에서 미 서부의 어려운 환경에서 자라나 결혼하여 두 아들을 키운 여인의 미덕을 찬양하였습니다. 그의 어머니는 많이 부족한 자들에게도 늘 격려를 아끼지 않았던 그런 아내요 어머니였습니다. 월리스는 어머니의 강인함이 그 목소리에 그대로 담겨 있었음을 기억하며, “어머니는 언제나 찬양할 기회를 찾으셨습니다.”라고 썼습니다. 스테그너의 어머니는 살아 있는 동안 언제나 크고 작은 축복들에 감사하며 찬양했습니다.

오늘의 시편 기자도 찬양할 기회를 늘 찾았습니다. 날이 좋을 때에도 찬양하고 나쁠 때에도 찬양하였습니다. 그 노래들은 강제나 억지로 한 것이 아니라, “만물을 지으시고”(146:6), “주린 자에게 먹을 것을 주시며”(7절), “맹인들의 눈을 여시고”(8절), “고아와 과부를 붙드시는”(9절) 하나님에 대한 자연스러운 반응이었습니다. 이것이 진정 찬양하는 삶이며, “영원히 진실함을 지키시는” “야곱의 하나님”(5-6절)을 오랜 세월 날마다 신뢰하면서 강해져가는 삶의 방식입니다.

우리의 목소리가 좋아야 한다는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 변함없는 선하심에 우리가 대답하는 것이 찬양하는 삶이라는 것입니다. “내 맘에 한 노래 있어”라는 오래된 찬송가 가사처럼 말입니다.

A Lifestyle of Praise

Wallace Stegner’s mother died at the age of fifty. When Wallace was eighty, he finally wrote her a note—“Letter, Much Too Late”—in which he praised the virtues of a woman who grew up, married, and raised two sons in the harshness of the early Western United States. She was the kind of wife and mother who was an encourager, even to those that were less than desirable. Wallace remembered the strength his mother displayed by way of her voice. Stegner wrote: “You never lost an opportunity to sing.” As long as she lived, Stegner’s mother sang, grateful for blessings large and small.

The psalmist too took opportunities to sing. He sang when the days were good, and when they weren’t so good. The songs were not forced or coerced, but a natural response to the “Maker of heaven and earth” (146:6) and how He “gives food to the hungry” (V. 7) and “gives sight to the blind” (V. 8) and “sustains the fatherless and the widow” (V. 9). This is really a lifestyle of singing, one that builds strength over time as daily trust is placed in “the God of Jacob” who “remains faithful forever” (VV. 5–6).

The quality of our voices isn’t the point, but our response to God’s sustaining goodness—a lifestyle of praise. As the old hymn puts it: “There’s within my heart a melody.” - JOHN BLASE

유일한 왕

예수님이 천국에서 이 땅으로 내려오셨다는 목사님의 말씀을 듣고 있던 다섯 살 난 엘든은 주님이 우리 죄를 위해 죽으심에 감사하는 목사님의 기도를 듣고는 놀라서 숨도 제대로 못 쉬더니 “아, 안돼요! 예수님이 죽으셨다고요?” 라고 말했습니다.

그리스도께서 이 땅에 오신 날부터 그가 죽기를 바라는 사람들이 있었습니다. 동방박사들이 헤롯왕이 통치하던 예루살렘에 와서 “유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시냐 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라” (마태복음 2:2) 라고 말했습니다. 헤롯왕은 이 말을 듣고 언젠가 예수님께 자신의 자리를 빼앗길까 두려워 군사들을 보내어 베들레헴과 그 지경의 두 살 아래의 모든 사내아이를 죽이라고 명했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그분의 아들을 보호하시고 천사를 보내 예수님의 부모에게 그 땅을 떠나라고 일러주셨습니다. 그들은 피신하였고 주님은 무사하였습니다(13-18절).

예수님은 모든 사역을 마치신 후 이 세상의 죄를 지고 십자가에 못 박히셨습니다. 주님이 달리신 십자가 위에는 조롱하려고 쓴 “이는 유대인의 왕 예수라” 라는 팻말이 달려있었습니다(27:37). 그러나 사흘 뒤 주님은 무덤에서 일어나 승리하시고, 하늘로 올라가 왕의 왕, 주의 주로서 왕좌에 앉으셨습니다(빌립보서 2:8-11).

왕이신 예수님께서 우리의 죄, 곧 당신과 나와 엘든의 죄를 위하여 죽으셨습니다. 우리 모두 주님께서 우리의 마음을 통치하시게 합시다.

The Only King

As five-year-old Eldon listened to the pastor talk about Jesus leaving heaven and coming to earth, he gasped when the pastor thanked Him in prayer for dying for our sins. “Oh, no! He died?” the boy said in surprise.

From the start of Christ’s life on earth, there were people who wanted Him dead. Wise men came to Jerusalem during the reign of King Herod inquiring, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him” (MATTHEW 2:2). When the king heard this, he became fearful of one day losing his position to Jesus. So he sent soldiers to kill all the boys two years old and younger around Bethlehem. But God protected His Son and sent an angel to warn His parents to leave the area. They fled, and He was saved (VV. 13–18).

When Jesus completed His ministry, He was crucified for the sins of the world. The sign placed above His cross, though meant in mockery, read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews” (27:37). Yet three days later He rose in victory from the grave. After ascending to heaven, He sat down on the throne as King of kings and Lord of lords (PHILIPPIANS 2:8–11).

The King died for our sins—yours, mine, and Eldon’s. Let’s allow Him to rule in our hearts. - ANNE CETAS

여기에 용이 있다?

전설에 따르면 중세 시대 지도의 가장자리에는 지도 제작자들이 당시에 알던 세계의 경계를 표시하면서 그곳에 숨어 있을 지도 모르는 무시무시한 괴물의 생생한 그림과 함께 “여기에 용이 있다”라는 글을 새겨 놓았다고 합니다.

실제로 중세의 지도 제작자들이 그 글을 썼다는 증거는 많지 않지만 그랬을 수도 있겠다는 생각이 듭니다. 아무것도 모르는 그곳에 접근하면 무슨 일이 일어날지는 몰라도 뭔가 좋지 않을 것 같다는 엄숙한 경고를 주려고, 나라도 그 때에 “여기에 용이 있다”라고 썼을 것 같습니다.

그러나 내가 선호하는 이런 자기 보호와 위험을 피하는 방식에는 확실히 문제가 있습니다. 그것은 바로 예수님을 믿는 사람으로서 가져야 할 용기(디모데후서 1:7)와는 정반대가 된다는 것입니다.

혹자는 내가 정말 위험한 것이 무엇인지 잘 몰라서 그런다고 말할지 모릅니다. 바울의 말처럼, 망가진 이 세상에서 용기 있게 그리스도를 따르는 것이 때로는 고난일 수 있습니다(8절). 하지만 사망에서 생명으로 옮겨진 뒤 성령의 삶이 우리 안에 흐르고 있는데 (9-10,14절) 어찌 그리스도를 따르지 않을 수 있겠습니까?

하나님께서 이처럼 믿기 어려운 선물을 주시는데 두려움으로 뒤로 물러선다면 정말 큰 비극이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그것은 우리가 그리스도를 따라 미지의 영역으로 들어가면서 만나게 될 어떤 것보다도 더 나쁜 일입니다(6-8,12절). 우리는 주님께 우리의 마음과 미래를 맡겨드려야 합니다(12절).

Here Be Dragons?

Legend has it that at the edges of medieval maps, marking the boundaries of the world the maps’ creators knew at the time, there’d be inscribed the words “Here be dragons”— often alongside vivid illustrations of the terrifying beasts supposedly lurking there.

There’s not much evidence medieval cartographers actually wrote these words, but I like to think they could have. Maybe because “here be dragons” sounds like something I might’ve written at the time—a grim warning that even if I didn’t know exactly what would happen if I ventured into the great unknown, it likely wouldn’t be good!

But there’s one glaring problem with my preferred policy of self-protection and risk-aversion: it’s the opposite of the courage to which I’m called as a believer in Jesus (2 TIMOTHY 1:7).

One might even say I’m misguided about what’s really dangerous. As Paul explained, in a broken world bravely following Christ will sometimes be painful (V. 8). But as those brought from death to life and entrusted with the Spirit’s life flowing in and through us (VV. 9–10,14), how could we not?

When God gives us a gift this staggering, to fearfully shrink back would be the real tragedy—far worse than anything we might face when we follow Christ’s leading into uncharted territory (VV. 6–8, 12). He can be trusted with our hearts and our future (V. 12). - MONICA BRANDS

기울어진 탑

이탈리아에 있는 유명한 피사의 사탑에 대해 들어본 적이 있을 것입니다. 그런데 샌프란시스코에 있는 기울어진 탑에 대해 들어본 적이 있는지요? 밀레니엄 타워라고 부르는 이 58층짜리 고층건물은 2008년에 완공되어 샌프란시스코 중심지에 당당하게, 하지만 약간 기울어진 모습으로 서 있습니다.

무엇이 문제일까요? 토목기술자들이 기초를 충분히 깊게 파지 않았기 때문 이었습니다. 지진에 건물이 무너지는 것을 방지하기 위해 현재 이 건물은 처음 전체를 지을 때보다 더 많은 공사비용을 들여 기초를 다시 파는 작업을 해야 하는 상황에 놓였습니다.

여기서 얻게 된 뼈아픈 교훈은 무엇 일까요? 기초가 중요하다는 것입니다. 기초가 튼튼하지 않을 때 재앙이 뒤따를 수 있습니다. 예수님도 산상수훈의 마지막 부분에서 이와 비슷한 것을 가르치셨습니다. 마태복음 7:24-27에서 예수님은 반석 위에 집을 짓는 건축자와 모래 위에 짓는 건축자, 둘을 대조하여 말씀하십니다. 폭풍이 몰아치면 기초가 튼튼한 집만 남게 됩니다.

이것이 주는 의미가 무엇일까요? 예수님은 우리의 삶이 순종과 믿음을 통해 그분 위에 세워져야 한다고 분명히 말씀하십니다(24절). 우리가 주님 안에 거할 때 하나님의 능력과 한없는 은혜를 통해 우리의 삶은 튼튼한 기반을 얻게 됩니다.

그리스도는 우리가 폭풍을 만나지 않을 것이라 약속하지 않으십니다. 그러나 그분이 우리 반석이 되실 때 믿음으로 다져진 우리의 기초를 폭풍이 결코 휩쓸지 못할 것이라고 분명히 말씀하십니다.

The Leaning Tower

You’ve probably heard of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, but have you heard of the leaning tower of San Francisco? It’s called the Millennium Tower. Built in 2008, this fifty-eight-story skyscraper stands proudly— but slightly crookedly—in downtown San Francisco.

The problem? Its engineers didn’t dig a deep enough foundation. So now they’re being forced to retrofit the foundation with repairs that may cost more than the entire tower did when it was originally built—a fix that some believe is necessary to keep it from collapsing during an earthquake.

The painful lesson here? Foundations matter. When your foundation isn’t solid, catastrophe could ensue. Jesus taught something similar near the end of His Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 7:24–27, He contrasts two builders, one who built on a rock, another on sand. When a storm inevitably came, only the house with a solid foundation was left standing.

What does this mean for us? Jesus clearly states that our lives must be built through obedience and trust upon Him (V. 24). When we rest in Him, our lives can find solid ground through God’s power and unending grace.

Christ doesn’t promise us that we’ll never face storms. But He does say that when He’s our rock, those storms will never wash away our faith-fortified foundation in Him. - ADAM HOLZ

지금부터 백 년 후

시나리오 작가인 로드 설링은 1975년에 “지금부터 백 년 후에도 사람들이 나를 기억하면 좋겠어요.”라고 말했습니다. TV 시리즈 ‘환상 특급’을 만든 설링은 사람들이 자신에 관해 “그는 작가였지.”라고 말해주길 원했습니다. 무언가 우리 삶에 의미와 영원함을 부여해주는 유산을 남기고 싶어 했던 설링의 바람에 우리도 대부분 공감할 수 있습니다.

욥의 이야기는 삶의 덧없는 날들 속에서 의미를 찾으려고 씨름하는 한 사람을 보여줍니다. 그는 한 순간에 자신의 소유물뿐만 아니라 가장 소중한 자녀들까지 빼 앗 겼 습 니 다 . 게다가 친구들은 그에게 그렇게 된 것이 ‘당연하다’고 비난했습니다. 욥은 “나의 말이 곧 기록되었으면, 책에 씌어졌으면, 철필과 납으로 영원히 돌에 새겨졌으면 좋겠노라”(욥기 19:23-24)고 부르짖었습니다.

욥의 말은 정말로 “영원히 돌에 새겨졌습니다.” 바로 성경 안에 말입니다. 하지만 욥은 후세에 남길 유산보다도 더 큰 의미가 그의 삶에 필요했습니다. 그는 하나님의 성품에서 그것을 찾았습니다. 욥이 선포합니다. “내가 알기에는 나의 대속자가 살아 계시니 마침내 그가 땅 위에 서실 것이라”(19:25). 이것을 알게 된 그는 올바른 것을
사모하게 되었습니다. 욥은 말합니다. “내 눈이 그를 보리니......내 마음이 한없이 설레는구나!”(27절, 현대인의 성경).

욥은 자기가 기대했던 것은 끝내 얻지 못했지만, 그보다 훨씬 더 큰 것을 찾았습니다. 모든 의미와 영원함의 근원이신 주님을 발견한 것입니다(42:1-6).

A Hundred Years from Now

“I just want people to remember me a hundred years from now,” said screenwriter Rod Serling in 1975. Creator of the TV series The Twilight Zone, Serling wanted people to say of him, “He was a writer.” Most of us can identify with Serling’s desire to leave a legacy—something to give our lives a sense of meaning and permanence.

The story of Job shows us a man struggling with meaning amid life’s fleeting days. In a moment, not just his possessions but those most precious to him, his children, were taken. Then his friends accused him of deserving this fate. Job cried out: “Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever!” (JOB 19:23–24).

Job’s words have been “engraved in rock forever.” We have them in the Bible. Yet Job needed even more meaning in his life than the legacy he’d leave behind. He discovered it in the character of God. “I know that my redeemer lives,” Job declared, “and that in the end he will stand on the earth” (19:25). This knowledge gave him the right longing. “I myself will see him,” Job said. “How my heart yearns within me!” (V. 27).

In the end, Job didn’t find what he expected. He found much more—the Source of all meaning and permanence (42:1–6). - TIM GUSTAFSON

익명의 배달

투명한 유리 꽃병에 담긴 종 모양의 백합과 핑크색 튤립과 노란 수선화가 현관문에서 킴을 반갑게 맞이해 주었습니다. 지난 7개월 동안 익명의 성도가 동네 꽃집에서 아름다운 꽃다발을 킴에게 보내주었습니다. 그 선물은 격려의 내용이 담긴 성경말씀과 함께 매달 배달되었고, “예수님 사랑으로”라고 서명이 되어 있었습니다.

킴은 이 익명의 배달에 관한 사진을 페이스북에 올렸습니다. 그녀는 꽃들을 보며 누군가의 친절에 감사할 수 있었고, 또한 하나님께서 그의 백성을 통해 사랑을 표현하시는 방식도 알게 되었습니다. 킴이 불치의 병과 싸우면서 하나님을 신뢰해 가는 동안 하나님은 여러 화사한 꽃들과 손 편지를 보내어 그녀를 긍휼히 여기신다는 것을 확실히 알게 하셨습니다.

익명으로 보내는 것에는 예수님께서 그의 백성들에게 베풀 때 품으라고 권면하신 그 마음가짐이 담겨 있습니다. 주님은 의로운 행위를 남에게 “보이려고” 하는 것을 경고하십니다(마태복음 6:1). 선행은 하나님이 우리에게 행하신 모든 것에 감사하는 마음에서 넘쳐흐르는 경배의 표현이어야 합니다. 칭찬을 바라거나 기대하는 마음으로 자신의 선행을 부각시키면 모든 선한 것을 주시는 예수님께 초점을 맞추지 못하게 됩니다.

우리가 선한 의도로 베풀 때 하나님께서 아십니다(4절). 하나님은 단지 우리가 사랑하는 마음에서 선행을 베풀고 그분께 영광과 존귀와 찬양을 드리는 것을 원하십니다.

Secret Delivery

A clear, glass vase with bell-shaped lilies of the valley, pink tulips, and yellow daffodils greeted Kim at her front door. For seven months, an anonymous believer in Jesus sent Kim beautiful bouquets from a local flower shop. Each monthly gift arrived with a note filled with scriptural encouragement and signed: “Love, Jesus.”

Kim shared photos of these secret deliveries on Facebook. The flowers gave her opportunity to celebrate an individual’s kindness and to acknowledge the way God expressed His love to her through His people. As she trusted Him through her battle with a terminal disease, every colorful blossom and handwritten note affirmed God’s loving compassion for her.

The sender’s anonymity reflects the heart motive Jesus encourages His people to adopt when giving. He warns against practicing righteous acts “to be seen” by others (MATTHEW 6:1). Good deeds are intended to be expressions of worship overflowing from hearts grateful for all God’s done for us. Highlighting our own generosity with the hope or expectation of being honored can take the focus off the Giver of all good things—Jesus.

God knows when we give with good intentions (V. 4). He simply wants our generosity motivated by love as we give Him the glory, the honor, and the praise. - XOCHITL DIXON

신비한 조력자

루이즈는 근육위축증을 앓고 있습니다. 그녀는 어느 날 기차역에서 나오다가 엘리베이터나 에스컬레이터도 없는 높은 계단을 만났습니다. 막 울음이 터지려는 순간 한 남자가 갑자기 나타나서 그녀의 가방을 들고 계단을 오를 수 있도록 차분히 도와주었습니다. 그녀가 돌아서서 감사의 말을 전하려고 했지만 그 남자는 벌써 사라졌습니다.

마이클은 미팅에 늦었습니다. 깨어진 관계 때문에 이미 스트레스를 받고 있었던 그는 런던의 교통체증과 씨름하던 중 자동차 타이어마저 펑크가 났습니다. 속수무책으로 빗속에 서 있는데 사람들 속에서 한 남자가 갑자기 나타나더니 트렁크에서 공구를 꺼내 차를 올려서 바퀴를 교체해 주었습니다. 마이클이 감사하다는 말을 전하려고 돌아봤을 때 그는 이미 가버리고 없었습니다.

이 신비한 조력자들은 과연 누구였을까요? 우연히 만난 친절한 사람이었을까요, 아니면 그 이상의 무엇이었을까요?

우리가 잘 알고 있는 빛나고 날개가 달린 천사의 모습은 사실 절반만 맞는 내용입니다. 어떤 때는 그런 모습으로 나타나지만 (이사야 6:2; 마태복음 28:3), 어떤 때는 더러운 발과 굶주린 모습으로 나타나서(창세기 18:1-5) 일반 사람들로 쉽게 오인됩니다(사사기 13:16). 히브리서 기자는 낯선 이들에게 환대를 베풀다가 우리도 모르는 사이에 천사를 대접할 수도 있다고 했습니다(13:2).

루이즈와 마이클을 도운 사람들이 천사였는지 우리는 알 수 없습니다. 그러나 말씀에 따르면 그들이 천사였을 수도 있습니다. 천사들은 지금도 하나님의 백성을 돕는 일을 하고 있습니다(히브리서 1:14). 그리고 그들은 길에서 만나는 사람처럼 아주 평범한 모습으로 나타날 수 있습니다.

Mysterious Helpers

Louise suffers from muscular dystrophy. While trying to exit a train station one day, she found herself facing a large flight of stairs without an elevator or escalator. On the verge of tears, Louise saw a man suddenly appear, pick up her bag, and gently help her up the stairs. When she turned to thank him, he was gone.

Michael was late for a meeting. Already stressed from a relationship breakdown, he started battling London’s traffic only to get a flat tire. As he stood helplessly in the rain, a man stepped out of the crowd, opened the boot (trunk), jacked up the car, and changed the wheel. When Michael turned to thank him, he was gone.

Who were these mysterious helpers? Kind strangers, or something more?

The popular image we have of angels as radiant or winged creatures is only half true. While some appear this way (ISAIAH 6:2; MATTHEW 28:3), others come with dusty feet, ready for a meal (GENESIS 18:1–5) and are easily mistaken for everyday people (JUDGES 13:16). The writer of Hebrews says that by showing hospitality to strangers, we can entertain angels without realizing it (13:2).

We don’t know if Louise and Michael’s helpers were angels. But according to Scripture, they could have been. Angels are at work right now, helping God’s people (HEBREWS 1:14). And they can appear as ordinary as a person on the street. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY
