정성들여 만들어진 것

뉴욕 주 고센의 치즈 농부 앨런 글루스토프는 유튜브 영상을 통해 치즈를 숙성시키는 과정, 다시 말해 치즈의 맛과 식감을 더해주는 과정을 설명했습니다. 치즈 덩어리들은 시장에 보내기 전, 6개월에서 12개월 동안 지하 동굴에 있는 선반에 계속 얹어놓습니다. 치즈가 그런 습한 환경에서 정성들여 만들어지는 것입니다. 글루스토프가 설명합니다. “우리는 치즈가 최고의 맛을 내도록 적절한 환경을 조성해주고......[그리고] 치즈의 진면목을 이끌어내기 위해 최선을 다하고 있습니다.”

나는 글루스토프가 생산하는 치즈의 잠재적 특성을 개발하려는 열정을 보면서, 하나님께서 자기 자녀들의 “가장 참된 잠재력”을 개발하여 그들이 풍성한 열매를 맺고 성숙해지도록 쏟으시는 열정을 떠올려 보았습니다. 에베소서 4장에서 바울 사도는 이런 과정을 거쳐 성숙되는 사람들, 예를 들면 사도들, 선지자들, 복음 전도자들, 목사들, 그리고 교사들에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다(11절). 이런 은사를 가진 사람들은 봉사활동 (12절에 언급되어 있는 “일”을 말함)을 독려할 뿐 아니라 성도 한 사람 한 사람의 믿음 성장을 촉진시키는데 도움을 줍니다. 그것의 목표는 우리가 “온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르는 것입니다”(13절).

영적 성장은 성령님의 능력에 힘입어 그분의 성숙케 하시는 과정을 따를 때 이루어집니다. 우리가 성령님이 우리 삶 속에 심어 주시는 사람들의 지침을 준수한다면, 성령께서 우리를 세상 밖으로 보내어 봉사하게 할 때처럼 많은 열매를 맺게 될 것입니다.

Carefully Crafted

In a YouTube video, Alan Glustoff, a cheese farmer in Goshen, New York, described his process for aging cheese, a process that adds to a cheese’s flavor and texture. Before it can be sent out to a market, each block of cheese remains on a shelf in an underground cave for six to twelve months. In this humid environment the cheese is carefully tended. “We do our best to give it the right environment to thrive . . . [and] to develop to its truest potential,” Glustoff explained.

Glustoff’s passion for developing the potential of the cheese he produces reminded me of God’s passion for developing the “truest potential” of His children so they will become fruitful and mature. In Ephesians 4, the apostle Paul describes the people involved in this process: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers (V. 11). People with these gifts help to stimulate the growth of each believer as well as to encourage acts of service (the “works” mentioned in verse 12). The goal is that we “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (V. 13).

Spiritual growth comes about through the power of the Holy Spirit as we submit to His maturing process. As we follow the guidance of the people He places in our lives, we become more effective as He sends us out to serve. - LINDA WASHINGTON

위험 물질

긴급출동 차량 한 대가 귀청을 찢는 사이렌 소리를 내며 내 차옆을 빠른 속도로 지나갔습니다. 그 차의 번쩍거리는 불빛이 내 차의 앞 유리를 환히 비출 때, 그 트럭 옆면에 쓰여 있는 “위험 물질”이라는 말이 불빛에 드러났습니다. 나중에 알게 되었지만, 그 차는 400갤런(약 1,500리터)짜리 황산 용기가 새기 시작한 어느 과학연구소로 급히 달려가고 있던 중이었습니다. 황산은 그것에 닿는 것은 무엇이든 손상시킬 수 있기 때문에 응급처치 요원들이 이 물질의 누수를 즉시 막아야 했습니다.

이 뉴스기사를 생각하다가 궁금한 생각이 들었습니다. ‘만일 내 입에서 귀에 거슬리거나 비난하는 말이 “새어나올” 때마다 사이렌이 요란하게 울린다면 어떻게 될까?’ 불행하게도, 그렇게 된다면 우리 집 주위는 매우 시끄러워질 것 같습니다.

이사야 선지자도 자신의 죄에 대해 나와 같은 자각을 고백했습니다. 그는 환상 중에 하나님의 영광을 보았을 때 자신이 정말 하찮은 존재라는 생각에 빠졌습니다. 그는 자신이 “입술이 부정한 사람”으로서, 똑같이 입술이 부정한 사람들과 함께 살고 있다는 사실을 알았습니다(이사야 6:5). 그런데 그 다음에 일어난 일을 보고 나는 희망을 가집니다. 한 천사가 시뻘겋게 타고 있는 숯을 이사야의 입술에 대면서 “네 악이 제하여졌고 네 죄가 사하여졌느니라”(7절)고 이야기해준 것입니다.

우리는 시시각각 글을 쓰거나 말을 할 때 해야 할 말을 선택합니다. 그 말들이 “위험한” 물질이 될까요? 아니면 하나님의 영광으로 우리의 죄가 드러나게 하여 그분의 은혜로 치유가 이루어져서 우리가 표현하는 모든 것으로 그분을 영화롭게 할 수 있을까요?

Hazardous Materials

The sound of a siren increased to an ear-piercing level as an emergency vehicle sped by my car. Its flashing lights glared through my windshield, illuminating the words “hazardous materials” printed on the side of the truck. Later, I learned it had been racing to a science laboratory where a 400-gallon container of sulfuric acid had begun to leak. Emergency workers had to contain the substance immediately because of its ability to damage whatever it came in contact with.

As I thought about this news story, I wondered what would happen if sirens blared every time a harsh or critical word “leaked” out of my mouth? Sadly, it might become rather noisy around our house.

The prophet Isaiah shared this sense of awareness about his sin. When he saw God’s glory in a vision, he was overcome by his unworthiness. He recognized that he was “a man of unclean lips” living with people who shared the same problem (ISAIAH 6:5). What happened next gives me hope. An angel touched his lips with a red-hot coal, explaining, “your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for” (V. 7).

We have moment-by-moment choices to make with our words—both written and spoken. Will they be “hazardous” material, or will we allow God’s glory to convict us and His grace to heal us so we can honor Him with everything we express? - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

진심어린 감사의 말

남편 앨런이 아들 재비어의 첫 취직 면접시험을 준비하면서 아들에게 채용해 줄 가능성이 있는 고용주들을 만난 후 그들에게 보낼 감사카드 한 묶음을 건네주었습니다. 그러고 나서 남편은 자신의 오랫동안 매니저로서의 경험을 살려 가상 면접관이 되어 아들에게 이런저런 질문을 하였습니다. 면접 연습이 끝난 후, 아들은 자기 이력서 몇 부를 폴더에 끼워 넣었습니다. 앨런이 감사카드에 대해 다시 얘기하자 아들은 웃으며 말했습니다. “예, 알았어요. 진심 어린 감사카드로 나는 다른 지원자들과 구별될 거예요.”

지원했던 회사 매니저가 재비어에게 채용하겠다는 전화를 하면서, 여러 해 동안 감사카드를 받았었는데 손으로 직접 쓴 감사카드는 처음이라고 고마움을 표했습니다.

감사의 말은 오래도록 좋은 인상을 남깁니다. 시편에는 시편 기자들의 진심어린 기도와 감사의 경배가 담겨 있습니다. 총 150 편의 시편 가운데 특히 다음 두 개의 절에 감사의 메시지가 잘 나타나 있습니다. “내가 전심으로 여호와께 감사하오며 주의 모든 기이한 일들을 전하리이다 내가 주를 기뻐하고 즐거워하며 지존하신 주의 이름을 찬송하리니”(시편 9:1-2).

우리는 하나님의 ‘모든’ 경이로운 행위에 대해 결코 감사를 다 표할 수 없을 것입니다. 그러나 우리의 기도에 진심어린 감사의 말로 시작할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 우리는 하나님을 찬양하며 또 그분이 하신 모든 일과 이루시겠다고 하신 모든 약속에 고마움을 표하면서, 감사로 경배 드리는 생활 방식을 키워나갈 수 있습니다.

A Sincere Thank You

In preparation for Xavier’s first job interview, my husband, Alan, handed our son a pack of thank-you cards for him to send out after he met with prospective employers. He then pretended to be a hiring interviewer, using his decades of experience as a manager to ask Xavier questions. After the role-playing, our son tucked several copies of his resume into a folder. He smiled when Alan reminded him about the cards. “I know,” he said. “A sincere thank-you note will set me apart from all the other applicants.”

When the manager called to hire Xavier, he expressed gratitude for the first hand-written thank-you card he’d received in years.

Saying thanks makes a lasting impact. The psalmists’ heartfelt prayers and grateful worship were preserved in the book of Psalms. Though there are one hundred and fifty psalms, these two verses reflect a message of thankfulness: “I will give thanks to you, LORD , with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High” (PSALM 9:1–2).

We will never be able to finish expressing our gratitude for all God’s wonderful deeds. But we can start with a sincere thank you through our prayers. We can nurture a lifestyle of grateful worship, praising God and acknowledging all He’s done and all He promises He’ll do. - XOCHITL DIXON

탐욕스럽게 움켜쥐기

‘소년과 개암나무 열매’라는 옛 우화에서 한 소년이 견과류가 들어있는 병에 손을 푹 집어넣어 견과류를 한 움큼 움켜잡습니다. 그런데 너무 많이 쥐는 바람에 손이 그만 병속에 갇히게 됩니다. 소년은 잡은 노다지를 조금도 놓치기 싫어 그만 울어버립니다. 결국, 손에 쥔 것을 조금 덜어 놓아야 손을 뺄 수 있다고 누가 타일러줍니다. 욕심은 고약한 상사일 수 있습니다.

전도서를 쓴 지혜로운 스승은 이 도덕적인 문제를 손에 관한 교훈과 손이 우리에게 의미하는 것을 예로 들어 설명합니다. 그는 게으른 자들을 탐욕스러운 자들과 비교하고 다음과 같이 대비시킵니다. “우매자는 팔짱을 끼고 있으면서 자기의 몸만 축내는도다 두 손에 가득하고 수고하며 바람을 잡는 것보다 한 손에만 가득하고 평온함이 더 나으니라” (4:5-6). 게으른 사람들은 파멸에 이를 때까지 일을 미루기만 하지만, 반면 부를 추구하는 사람들도 자신들의 노력이 “헛되어 불행한 노고” 라는 것을 나중에 깨닫게 됩니다(8절).

Greedy Grasping

In the ancient fable The Boy and the Filberts (Nuts), a boy sticks his hand into a jar of nuts and grabs a great fistful. But his hand is so full that it gets stuck in the jar. Unwilling to lose even a little of his bounty, the boy begins to weep. Eventually, he’s counseled to let go of some of the nuts so the jar will let go of his hand. Greed can be a hard boss.

The wise teacher of Ecclesiastes illustrates this moral with a lesson on hands and what they say about us. He compared and contrasted the lazy with the greedy when he wrote: “Fools fold their hands and ruin themselves. Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind” (4:5–6). While the lazy procrastinate until they’re ruined, those who pursue wealth come to realize their efforts are “meaningless—a miserable business!” (V. 8).

According to the teacher, the desired state is to relax from the toil of greedy grasping in order to find contentment in what truly belongs to us. For that which is ours will always remain. As Jesus said, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul” (MARK 8:36). - REMI OYEDELE

주께서 이루셨다

왓슨 존스 목사는 자전거를 배우던 때를 기억합니다. 어린 왓슨이 자전거를 배울 때 아버지가 바로 옆에서 같이 걷고 있었는데, 왓슨이 베란다에 앉아 있는 여자 아이들을 보고는 “아빠, 저 이제 탈 줄 알아요!”라고 말했습니다. 그러나 사실 그렇지 않았습니다. 나중에 알았지만 왓슨은 그때 아버지가 줄곧 잡아주지 않았으면 균형을 잡을 수 없었던 것입니다. 그는 자신이 생각한 만큼 성장하지 않았었습니다.

하늘에 계신 우리 아버지는 우리가 성장하여 “온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르기를”(에베소서 4:13) 간절히 바라고 계십니다. 그러나 영적인 성숙은 자연의 성숙과는 다릅니다. 부모는 자식들이 독립하여 더 이상 부모를 필요로 하지 않게 키웁니다. 반면, 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리가 하나님을 매일 더욱 의지하도록 키우십니다.

베드로는 자신의 편지를 “하나님과 우리 주 예수를 앎으로 은혜와 평강”이 있을 것을 약속하면서 시작하여 바로 그 “우리 주 곧 구주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 그를 아는 지식에서 자라 가라” 고 권유하면서 편지를 마칩니다(베드로후서 1:2; 3:18). 아무리 성숙한 그리스도인이더라도 예수님이 더 이상 필요하지 않게 될 경우는 절대 없습니다.

왓슨 목사는 이렇게 주의를 줍니다. “사람들 중에는 우리 삶의 손잡이를 잡고 계시는 예수님의 손을 쳐서 떼어내는데 급급한 사람들이 있습니다.” 우리가 불안하여 흔들리고 주저앉게 될 때 우리를 잡고 일으켜주며 껴안아 주는 그분의 강한 손길이 필요하지 않을 것처럼 말입니다. 그리스도께 의지하지 않고는 우리는 성장할 수 없습니다. 우리는 주님의 은혜와 그분을 아는 지식에 더 깊게 뿌리내릴 때에만 성장할 수 있습니다.

He’s Got This

Pastor Watson Jones remembers learning to ride a bike. His father was walking alongside when little Watson saw some girls sitting on a porch. “Daddy, I got this!” he said. He didn’t. He realized too late he hadn’t learned to balance without his father’s steadying grip. He wasn’t as grown up as he thought.

Our heavenly Father longs for us to grow up and “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (EPHESIANS 4:13). But spiritual maturity is different from natural maturity. Parents raise their children to become independent, to no longer need them. Our divine Father raises us to daily depend on Him more.

Peter begins his letter by promising “grace and peace . . . through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,” and he ends by urging us to “grow in” that same “grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 PETER 1:2; 3:18). Mature Christians never outgrow their need for Jesus.

Watson warns, “Some of us are busy slapping Jesus’s hands off the handlebars of our life.” As if we didn’t need His strong hands to hold us, to pick us up, and to hug us when we wobble and flop. We can’t grow beyond our dependence on Christ. We only grow by sinking our roots deeper in the grace and knowledge of Him. - MIKE WITTMER

하나님의 특별한 보물

아주 넒은 왕실을 상상해보십시오. 보좌에 한 위대한 왕이 앉아 있습니다. 수종을 드는 자들이 최고의 예를 갖추어 왕을 둘러싸고 있습니다. 이번에는 왕의 발밑에 놓인 상자를 상상해보십시오. 이따금 왕이 손을 뻗어 그 속에 들어 있는 것들을 뒤적입니다. 상자 속에 무엇이 들어있을까요? 보석과 금, 그리고 왕이 특별히 좋아하는 원석들입니다. 상자 속에는 왕이 귀히 여기는 것들, 곧 그에게 큰 기쁨을 가져다주는 것들을 모아놓았습니다. 마음의 눈으로 그 모습이 보이십니까?

이 보물을 히브리어로는 ‘세굴라’ 라고 하는데, 이는 ‘특별한 소유물’이라는 뜻입니다. 이 단어는 구약성경의 출애굽기 19장 5절, 신명기 7장 6절, 시편 135편 4절에서 볼 수 있는데, 거기에서 이 말은 이스라엘 민족을 가리킵니다. 한편, 같은 이 말이 신약성경의 베드로 사도의 기록에도 나옵니다. 그는 이제 이스라엘 민족을 넘어선 집단인 “긍휼을 얻은”(10절) 자들을 “하나님의 백성”이라고 묘사하고 있습니다. 다시 말해 유대인이든 이방인이든 다 예수님을 믿는 사람들에 대해 말하고 있는 것입니다. 그는 또 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “그러나 너희는......그(하나님)의 소유가 된 백성이니”(9절).

God’s Special Treasure

Imagine a vast throne room. Seated on the throne is a great king. He’s surrounded by all manner of attendants, each on their best behavior. Now imagine a box that sits at the king’s feet. From time to time the king reaches down and runs his hands through the contents. And what’s in the box? Jewels, gold, and gemstones particular to the king’s tastes. This box holds the king’s treasures, a collection that brings him great joy. Can you see that image in your mind’s eye?

The Hebrew word for this treasure is segulah , and it means “special possession.” That word is found in such Old Testament Scriptures as Exodus 19:5, Deuteronomy 7:6, and Psalm 135:4, where it refers to the nation of Israel. But that same word picture shows up in the New Testament by way of the pen of Peter the apostle. He’s describing the “people of God,” those who “have received mercy” (V.10), a collection now beyond the nation of Israel. In other words, he’s talking about those who believe in Jesus, both Jew and gentile. And he writes “But you are . . . God’s special possession” (V. 9).

Imagine that! The great and powerful King of heaven considers you among His special treasures. He has rescued you from the grip of sin and death. He claims you as His own. The King’s voice says, “This one I love. This one is mine.” - JOHN BLASE

2018년 바르나 그룹의 연구에 의하면 대부분의 미국인들은 하나님에 대해 이야기하기를 좋아하지 않는다고 합니다. 미국인들 중 단 7퍼센트만이 영적인 문제에 대해 주기적으로 이야기를 나누고 있는데, 예수님을 믿는 미국인들도 그다지 다르지 않다고 합니다. 그리고 정기적으로 교회에 가는 사람들 중에도 13퍼센트만이 일주일에 한 번 정도 영적인 대화를 나눈다고 응답했습니다.

영적인 대화가 감소 추세에 있는 것이 어쩌면 놀라운 일이 아닐 수도 있습니다. 하나님에 대해 이야기하는 것이 위험할 수 있기 때문입니다. 양극화된 정치 풍토 때문이거나, 의견 불일치로 인해 인간관계에 균열이 생길 수 있거나, 아니면 영적인 대화를 하다보면 당신의 삶에 변화가 필요하다는 것을 깨닫게 될 수도 있기 때문에, 그 어느 경우이든 영적인 대화는 안전하지 않은 대화처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다.

그러나 신명기에서 하나님의 백성인 이스라엘 민족에게 지시한 내용을 보면 하나님에 대해 이야기하는 것은 정상적이고 자연스러운 일상생활의 일부분이었습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 그분의 말씀을 암기하고, 그 말씀들을 자주 볼 수 있는 곳에 두어야 했습니다. 그들은 율법에 따라 “집에 앉아 있을 때에든지, 길을 갈 때에든지, 누워 있을 때에든지, 일어날 때에든지” 삶에 필요한 하나님의 가르침을 자녀들과 함께 나누어야 했습니다(신명기 11:19).

하나님은 우리에게 대화할 것을 요구하십니다. 기회를 만들어 성령님께 의지하여 가벼운 이야기를 좀 더 깊은 이야기로 발전시켜 보십시오. 우리가 하나님의 말씀에 대해 이야기하고 그 말씀을 실천할 때 하나님께서 우리 공동체에 복을 주실 것입니다.

God Talk

A study conducted by the Barna Group in 2018 found that most Americans don’t like to talk about God. Only seven percent of Americans say they talk about spiritual matters regularly—and practicing believers in Jesus in America aren’t that different. Only thirteen percent of regular church- goers say they have a spiritual conversation about once a week.

Perhaps it’s not surprising that spiritual conversations are on the decline. Talking about God can be dangerous. Whether because of a polarized political climate, because disagreement might cause a rift in a relationship, or because a spiritual conversation might cause you to realize a change you need to make in your life—these can feel like high-stakes conversations.

But in the instructions given to God’s people, the Israelites, in the book of Deuteronomy, talking about God can be a normal, natural part of everyday life. God’s people were to memorize His words and to display them in places where they’d often be seen. The law said to talk about God’s instructions for life with your children “when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (11:19).

God calls us to conversation. Take a chance, rely on the Spirit, and try turning your small talk toward something deeper. God will bless our communities as we talk about His words and practice them. - AMY PETERSON

한 분의 인정

전설적인 작곡가 쥬세페 베르디(1813~1901)가 젊었을 때, 인정받고 싶은 열망이 그를 성공으로 이끌어주었습니다. 워렌 비어스비가 쓴 글입니다. “베르디가 피렌체에서 그의 첫 오페라를 발표할 때, 그는 어두운 곳에 홀로 서서 관람객 중 한 사람 얼굴만 줄곧 바라보았습니다. 그 사람은 대가 롯시니였습니다. 베르디에게는 홀 안의 사람들이 그에게 환호를 보내든 야유를 보내든 그것은 중요하지 않았습니다. 그가 원했던 것은 오로지 그 거장 음악가가 인정한다는 의미로 보여주는 미소뿐이었습니다.”

우리는 누구의 인정을 받고 싶어 합니까? 부모님? 직장상사? 사랑하는 사람? 바울에게는 오직 한 가지 답만 있었습니다. “오직 하나님께 옳게 여기심을 입어 복음을 위탁 받았으니 우리가 이와 같이 말함은 사람을 기쁘게 하려 함이 아니요 오직 우리 마음을 감찰하시는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하려 함이라”(데살로니가전서 2:4).

하나님의 인정을 추구한다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요? 거기에는 최소한 두 가지 의미가 내포되어 있습니다. 다른 사람들로부터 박수 받기를 바라는 마음을 그만두는 것과, 성령의 힘으로 우리가, 우리를 사랑하여 우리를 위해 자신을 내어주신 그리스도를 더욱 닮아가는 것입니다. 우리 안에서 우리를 통해 이루시는 하나님의 완벽한 목적에 우리를 내어줄 때, 우리는 어느 날 가장 중요한 그분이 인정하시는 미소를 보게 될 것입니다.

The Approval of One

When the legendary composer Guiseppi Verdi (1813–1901) was young, a hunger for approval drove him toward success. Warren Wiersbe wrote of him: “When Verdi produced his first opera in Florence, the composer stood by himself in the shadows and kept his eye on the face of one man in the audience—the great Rossini. It mattered not to Verdi whether the people in the hall were cheering him or jeering him; all he wanted was a smile of approval from the master musician.”

Whose approval do we seek? A parent’s? A boss’s? A love interest’s? For Paul, there was but one answer. He wrote, “We speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts” (1 THESSALONIANS 2:4).

What does it mean to seek God’s approval? At the very least, it involves two things: turning from the desire for the applause of others and allowing His Spirit to make us more like Christ—the One who loved us and gave Himself for us. As we yield to His perfect purposes in us and through us, we can anticipate a day when we will experience the smile of His approval—the approval of the One who matters most. - BILL CROWDER

탕자의 형

작가 헨리 나우웬은 러시아 상트페테르부르크의 박물관에 가서 렘브란트의 돌아온 탕자 그림을 오랫동안 감상했던 때를 돌이켜 봅니다. 날이 저물며 근처 창문에서 들어오는 자연광이 바뀌면서 나우웬은 빛이 바뀌는 것만큼 여러 다른 그림을 보고 있는 것 같은 느낌을 받았습니다. 달리 보이는 그림 하나하나는 망가진 아들에 대한 아버지의 사랑을 서로 다르게 보여주는 듯 했습니다.

나우웬은 네 시 쯤 되니까 그림 속의 세 인물이 “앞으로 걸어 나오는” 것처럼 보였다고 설명합니다. 그 중 한 사람은 탕자인 동생이 집에 돌아오자 극진히 환대한 아버지에게 분개한 큰 아들이었습니다. 어쨌든 동생은 상당히 많은 집안 재산을 낭비함으로써 가족을 내내 고통과 곤란한 상황에 처하게 만들지 않았던 가요?(누가복음 15:28-30).

다른 두 인물을 보며 나우웬은 예수님이 비유를 들어 말씀하실때 그 자리에 있었던 종교지도자들이 생각났습니다. 그들은 예수님에게로 다가왔던 죄인들에 대해서 뒤에서 이러쿵저러쿵 수군거렸던 사람들이었습니다(1-2절).

나우웬은 그림 속의 모든 인물들에게서 자기 자신의 모습을 보았습니다. 낭비하는 삶을 살았던 작은 아들, 비난하는 형, 종교지도자들, 그리고 어떤 사람도 다 품을 수 있을 만큼 넓은 하나님 아버지의 마음에서 자기 자신의 모습들을 보았습니다.

우리는 어떻습니까? 렘브란트의 그림 어느 부분에서 우리 자신을 볼 수 있습니까? 어떤 면에서는, 예수님이 하신 모든 이야기는 우리 자신에 관한 것입니다.

The Older Brother

Author Henri Nouwen recalls his visit to a museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he spent hours reflecting on Rembrandt’s portrayal of the prodigal son. As the day wore on, changes in the natural lighting from a nearby window left Nouwen with the impression that he was seeing as many different paintings as there were changes of light. Each seemed to reveal something else about a father’s love for his broken son.

Nouwen describes how, at about four o’clock, three figures in the painting appeared to “step forward.” One was the older son who resented his father’s willingness to roll out the red carpet for the homecoming of his younger brother, the prodigal. After all, hadn’t he squandered so much of the family fortune, causing them pain and embarrassment in the process? (LUKE 15:28–30).

The other two figures reminded Nouwen of the religious leaders who were present as Jesus told His parable. They were the ones who muttered in the background about the sinners Jesus was attracting (VV. 1–2).

Nouwen saw himself in all of them—in the wasted life of his youngest son, in the condemning older brother and religious leaders, and in a Father’s heart that’s big enough for anyone and everyone.

What about us? Can we see ourselves anywhere in Rembrandt’s painting? In some way, every story Jesus told is about us. - MART DEHAAN

아름답게 짐 떠맡기

칠흑 같은 어둠 속에서 잠이 깼습니다. 30분 정도 밖에 자지 않았는데도 바로 잠이 다시 올 것 같지 않았습니다. 병원에 누워 있는 친구의 남편이 “암이 재발했고, 지금 뇌와 척추에 퍼져 있다”는 무서운 소식을 들었습니다. 친구들 일로 내 몸 전체가 아팠습니다. 정말 무거운 짐입니다! 그럼에도 불구하고, 밤새 경건하게 기도를 드리고 나니 마음이 한결가벼워졌습니다. 남들은 내가 친구들의 짐을 ‘아름답게’ 떠맡았다고 말할지 모릅니다. ‘어떻게 그럴 수가 있을까요?’

마태복음 11:28-30에서 예수님은 우리의 지친 영혼들에게 안식을 약속해 주십니다. 그런데 이상하게도 주님이 주시는 안식은 우리가 그분의 멍에를 메고 그분의 짐을 끌어안을때 찾아옵니다. 주님은 그 이유를 30절에서 이렇게 밝혀주십니다. “이는 내 멍에는 쉽고 내 짐은 가벼움이라.” 예수님이 우리 등 뒤의 짐을 들어 올리고 우리를 주님의 멍에에 붙잡아매면, 우리는 주님과 보조를 맞추게 되어 주님이 허락하시는 모든 것을 주님과 함께 일할 수 있게 됩니다. 우리가 주님의 짐을 짊어지면 우리는 그분의 고통을 나누어 가지게 되어 결국 주님의 위로도 함께 받을 수 있습니다 (고린도후서 1:5).

친구들에 대한 나의 걱정은 무거운 짐이었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 나로 하여금 그들을 기도 속에서 만날 수 있게 해주신 것에 감사했습니다. 나는 차츰 잠에 빠져 들었다가 다시 깨어났습니다. 여전히 아름답게 짐을 지고 있지만, 이제는 쉬운 멍에 아래에서 가벼운 짐을 지고 예수님과 함께 걸어가고 있습니다.

Beautifully Burdened

I awoke to pitch darkness. I hadn’t slept more than thirty minutes and my heart sensed that sleep wouldn’t return soon. A friend’s husband lay in the hospital, having received the dreaded news, “The cancer is back—in the brain and spine now.” My whole being hurt for my friends. What a heavy load! And yet, somehow my spirit was lifted through my sacred vigil of prayer. You might say I felt beautifully burdened for them. How could this be?

In Matthew 11:28–30, Jesus promises rest for our weary souls. Strangely, His rest comes as we bend under His yoke and embrace His burden. He clarifies in verse 30, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” When we allow Jesus to lift our burden from our backs and then tether ourselves to Jesus’s yoke, we become harnessed with Him, in step with Him and all He allows. When we bend under His burden, we share in His sufferings, which ultimately allows us to share in His comfort as well (2 CORINTHIANS 1:5).

My concern for my friends was a heavy burden. Yet I felt grateful that God would allow me to carry them in prayer. Gradually I ebbed back to sleep and awoke—still beautifully burdened but now under the easy yoke and light load of walking with Jesus. - ELISA MORGAN
