하나님만큼 큰 사랑

나는 도미니카 공화국의 산토 도밍고라는 가난한 동네를 방문한 적이 있습니다. 집들은 주름진 철판으로 만들어졌고, 그 위로 전기가 통하는 전선들이 매달려 있었습니다. 거기서 나는 가족들을 면담하며 교회가 어떻게 실업과 마약, 범죄와 싸우는 것을 돕고 있는지 들을 수 있는 특별한 시간을 가질 수 있었습니다.

한 골목길에서 나는 한 엄마와 아들을 면담하기 위해 위태위태한 사다리를 타고 올라갔습니다. 그러나 곧 어떤 사람이 서둘러 올라와서는 “빨리 떠나야 한다”고 말했습니다. 커다란 칼을 쓰는 갱 두목이 우리를 습격하려고 폭도들을 모으고 있었던 것입니다.

우리는 두 번째 마을을 방문했지만, 그곳에서는 아무런 문제가 없었습니다. 나중에 나는 왜 그런지 알게 되었습니다. 우리가 매번 집을 방문할 때마다, 한 갱단의 두목이 밖에 서서 우리를 지켜주고 있었던 것입니다. 알고 보니 그의 딸이 교회에서 음식과 교육을 제공받고 있었는데, 교회의 성도들이 딸의 편이 되어주었기에 그도 우리의 편이 되어준 것입니다.

산상수훈에서 예수님은 비교할 수 없는 사랑의 기준을 제시 하십니다. 그런 사랑은 ‘사랑받을 만한’ 사람뿐만 아니라 그럴 가치가 없는 사람들과(마태복음 5:43-45), 가족과 친구를 넘어서 사랑을 돌려줄 수도 없고 돌려주지도 않을 사람들까지(46-47절) 품어주는 사랑입니다. 이것이 하나님만큼 큰 사랑이며(48절) 모든 이들을 축복하는 사랑입니다.

산토 도밍고의 성도들이 이런 사랑을 삶으로 나누면서 이웃들이 바뀌기 시작했습니다. 그런 사랑으로 말미암아 굳은 마음들이 녹아내리고 있습니다. 하나님만큼 큰 사랑이 도시에 나타날 때 바로 그런 일들이 일어납니다.

God-Sized Love

I once visited an impoverished neighborhood of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Homes were made of corrugated iron, with electrical wires dangling live above them. There I had the privilege of interviewing families and hearing how churches were helping to combat unemployment, drug use, and crime.

In one alleyway I climbed a rickety ladder to a small room to interview a mother and her son. But just a moment later someone rushed up, saying, “We must leave now.” A machete-wielding gang leader was apparently gathering a mob to ambush us.

We visited a second neighborhood, but there we had no problem. Later I discovered why. As I visited each home, a gang leader stood outside guarding us. It turned out his daughter was being fed and educated by the church, and because believers were standing by her, he stood by us.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents a standard of love that’s beyond comparison. This kind of love embraces not just the “worthy” but the undeserving (MATTHEW 5:43–45), reaching beyond family and friends to touch those who can’t or won’t love us back (VV. 46–47). This is God-sized love (V. 48)—the kind that blesses everyone.

As believers in Santo Domingo live out this love, neighborhoods are starting to change. Tough hearts are warming to their cause. That’s what happens when God-sized love comes

신성하다고 불린 불

몇 년 간 가물다가 캘리포니아 남부에서 산불이 많이 발생하자 어떤 주민들은 하나님이 이 산불을 일으킨 것이라고 생각하였습니다. 이런 그릇된 생각은 뉴스 매체에서 이 산불을 ‘신성한 불’이라 부르기 시작하면서 더 강해졌습니다. 이 지역을 잘 모르는 사람들은 이 말이 ‘신성한 짐의 계곡’이라는 곳의 이름을 따서 말한 것임을 알지 못했습니다. ‘신성한 짐’은 누구일까요? 이 지역에 전해오는 이야기에 의하면, 그는 19세기의 양봉업자로 지독히도 반종교적이고 심술궂은 사람이어서 이웃들이 그를 비꼬아 그런 별명을 붙였다고 합니다.

세례 요한이 말한 “성령과 불”의 세례도 나름의 이야기와 설명이 있습니다 (누가복음 3:16). 돌이켜 보면, 그는 말라기 선지자가 보았던 연단하는 불과 같은 메시아의 모습(말라기 3:1-3; 4:1)을 생각하고 있었던 것 같습니다. 그렇지만 하나님의 성령이 예수님의 제자들에게 바람과 불과 같이 오신 후에야 비로소 말라기와 세례 요한의 말의 의미가 뚜렷이 드러났습니다(사도행전 2:1-4).

세례 요한이 예언했던 불은 기대했던 것과는 달랐습니다. 하나님이 실제로 일으키신 그 불은 사람들의 생각과는 다른 모습의 메시아와 신성한 불꽃으로 담대하게 선포하며 나타났습니다. 예수님의 영 안에서 그 불은 우리 인간들의 헛된 노력을 드러내 태워버리고, 거기에 사랑과 희락, 화평, 오래 참음, 자비, 양선, 충성, 온유, 절제를 위한 공간을 마련해주었습니다(갈라디아 5:22-23 참조). 바로 그것이 우리 안에서 역사하시려는 하나님의 행동들입니다.

A Fire Called Holy

After several years of drought, the wildfires of Southern California left some residents thinking of them as acts of God. This disturbing impression was reinforced when news sources began referring to one as the Holy Fire. Many unfamiliar with the area didn’t realize it was a reference to the Holy Jim Canyon region. But who was Holy Jim? According to local history, he was a nineteenthcentury beekeeper so irreligious and cantankerous that neighbors tagged him with that ironic nickname.

John the Baptist’s reference to a baptism of “the Holy Spirit and fire” also came with its own story and explanation (LUKE 3:16). Looking back, he was likely thinking of the kind of Messiah and refining fire foreseen by the prophet Malachi (3:1–3; 4:1). But only after the Spirit of God came like wind and fire on the followers of Jesus did the words of Malachi and John come into focus (ACTS 2:1–4).

The fire John predicted wasn’t what was expected. As a true act of God, it came with boldness to proclaim a different kind of Messiah and holy flame. In the Spirit of Jesus, it exposed and consumed our futile human efforts—while making room for the love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control of the Holy Spirit (SEE GALATIANS 5:22–23). Those are the acts of God that He would like to work in us. - MART DEHAAN

아름다움을 위한 시간

1월의 어느 아침, 나는 지난 몇 주 동안 보았던 것처럼 황량한 한겨울 풍경을 보겠거니 하고 눈을 떴습니다. 회색 하늘 아래 눈 더미 사이로 드문드문 드러난 베이지색 잔디와 가지만 남은 나무들 모습 말입니다. 그런데 밤새 이상한 일이 일어났습니다. 서리 때문에 모든 것이 얼음결정으로 덮여 버린 것입니다. 생명이 없고 우울했던 풍경이 햇빛을 받아 반짝이며 내 눈을 부시게 만든 아름다운 광경으로 변해 있었습니다.

우리는 때때로 믿음을 갖게 해주는 신앙의 상상력을 상실한 채 문제를 바라봅니다. 매일 아침 고통과 두려움, 절망이 우리를 기다리고 있다고 생각 하면서도 무언가 다른 일이 일어날 가능성은 못 보고 지나칩니다. 우리는 하나님의 권능으로 말미암은 회복이나 성장, 또는 승리를 기대하지 않습니다. 그러나 성경은 하나님이 우리가 어려운 시기를 지날 때 도우시는 분이라고 말합니다. 하나님은 상한 심령들을 고치시고 속박된 사람들을 자유롭게 하십니다. 그분은 슬퍼하는 자에게 “화관을 주어 그 재를 대신하며 기쁨의 기름으로 그 슬픔을 대신하며 찬송의 옷으로 그 근심을 대신하십니다”(이사야 61:3).

하나님은 우리에게 문제가 있을 때 그저 우리를 격려하는 것으로 그치지 않고, 시련을 당할 때 그분 자신이 바로 우리의 희망이 되어 주십니다. 비록 우리가 천국에 가서야 완전한 안도를 누린다 할지라도, 하나님은 우리와 함께 하셔서 우리를 격려하시고 그분 자신의 여러 모습을 보여주십니다. 우리가 삶의 여정을 지나가면서 성 어거스틴이 한 다음의 말을 이해할 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다. “나의 가장 깊은 상처에서 주님의 영광을 보았고, 그것이 나를 눈부시게 했습니다.”

A Time for Beauty

One January morning I woke expecting to see the same dreary midwinter landscape that had greeted me for several weeks: beige grass poking through patches of snow, gray skies, and skeletal trees. Something unusual had happened overnight, though. A frost had coated everything with ice crystals. The lifeless and depressing landscape had become a beautiful scene that glistened in the sun and dazzled me.

Sometimes we view problems without the imagination it takes to have faith. We expect pain, fear, and despair to greet us every morning, but overlook the possibility of something different ever happening. We don’t expect recovery, growth, or victory through God’s power. Yet the Bible says God is the one who helps us through difficult times. He repairs broken hearts and liberates people in bondage. He comforts the grieving with “a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (ISAIAH 61:3).

It isn’t that God just wants to cheer us up when we have problems. It’s that He Himself is our hope during trials. Even if we have to wait for heaven to find ultimate relief, God is present with us, encouraging us and often giving us glimpses of Himself. In our journey through life, may we come to understand St. Augustine’s words: “In my deepest wound I saw your glory, and it dazzled me.” - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

모든 관심

오늘의 과학기술은 잠시도 우리의 관심을 내려놓지 못하게 합니다. 현대의 “기적”이라는 인터넷은 이제 우리 손바닥 안에서 인류의 방대한 지식을 접할 수 있는 놀라운 능력을 제공해줍니다. 그러나 많은 경우 그러한 빈번한 접속으로 우리는 그에 따르는 대가를 치러야 합니다.

작가 린다 스톤은 어떤 것도 놓치지 않으려고 “바깥세상에서” 무슨 일이 일어 나고 있는지 끊임없이 알려고 하는 현대인의 충동을 설명하기 위해 “쉴 새 없는 부분적인 관심”이라는 문구를 만들어냈습니다. 그것이 마치 만성적인 불안을 일으킬 수 있겠다고 들린다면 당신 말이 맞습니다!

바울 사도는 여러 가지 이유로 불안 때문에 고민했지만 우리의 영혼이 하나님 안에서 평화를 찾을 수 있도록 설계되어 있음을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 바울은 박해를 견뎌냈던(데살로니가전서 2:14) 새로운 신자들에게 보낸 편지에서 결론적으로 다음과 같이 권고했던 것입니다. “항상 기뻐하라 쉬지 말고 기도하라 범사에 감사하라”(5:16-18).

“쉬지 말고” 기도하라는 말이 꽤 위축되는 말로 들릴지 모르겠습니다. 하지만 우리는 얼마나 자주 우리 전화기를 확인하고 있는지요? 우리가 그 충동을 하나님과 대화하는 기회로 삼으면 어떨까요?

더 중요하게, 우리가 언제나 정보를 “알고” 싶어 하는 욕구를 하나님의 임재 가운데 끊임없이 기도하며 얻는 안식과 서로 맞바꾸는 법을 배우면 어떨까요? 그리스도의 영에 의지하는 삶을 통해, 우리는 하루하루를 살아가면서 하나님 아버지께 쉬지 않고 우리의 ‘모든’ 관심을 드리는 것을 배울 수 있습니다.

Full Attention

Technology today seems to demand our constant attention. The modern “miracle” of the internet gives us the amazing capacity to access humanity’s collective learningin the palm of our hand. But for many, such constant access can come at a cost.

Writer Linda Stone has coined the phrase “continual partial attention” to describe the modern impulse to always need to know what’s happening “out there,” to make sure we’re not missing anything. If that sounds like it could produce chronic anxiety, you’re right!

Although the apostle Paul struggled with different reasons for anxiety, he knew our souls are wired to find peace in God. Which is why, in a letter to new believers who’d endured persecution (1 THESSALONIANS 2:14), Paul concluded by urging the believers to “rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances” (5:16–18).

Praying “continually” might seem pretty daunting. But then, how often do we check our phones? What if we instead let that urge be a prompt to talk to God?

More important, what if we learned to exchange a need to always be in “the know” for continual, prayerful rest in God’s presence? Through relying on Christ’s Spirit, we can learn to give our heavenly Father our continual full attention as we make our way through each day. - ADAM HOLZ

간다, 간다, 사라졌다

짓궂기로 유명한 예술가 뱅크시가 또 한 번 짓궂은 일을 하였습니다. 런던 소더비 경매장에서 뱅크시의 그림 ‘풍선을 가진 소녀’가 백만 파운드에 낙찰되었음을 알리는 경매인의 말이 끝나기가 무섭게 알람이 울리면서 그림이 액자 하단에 미리 설치된 분쇄기에 반쯤 들어가면서 파쇄 되는 일이 벌어진 것입니다. 이에 뱅크시는 “간다, 간다, 사라졌다”라는 말과 함께 망가진 명작을 바라보며 망연자실하는 입찰 참가자들의 모습을 담은 사진을 트위터에 올렸습니다.

뱅크시는 부자를 골려주는 것이 재미있었던 것 같습니다. 하지만 굳이 애써 그럴 필요는 없었습니다. 재물에는 그 자체에 숱한 골칫거리가 따라다니기 때문입니다. 하나님은 말씀하십니다. “부자 되기에 애쓰지 말고...... 네가 어찌 허무한 것에 주목하겠느냐 정녕히 재물은 스스로 날개를 내어 하늘을 나는 독수리처럼 날아가리라”(4-5절).

돈만큼 불안정한 것도 없습니다. 벌기는 힘들어도 잃는 방법은 많습니다. 투자에 실패하고, 인플레가 심해지고, 고지서가 날아오고, 강도를 만나고, 불이나 홍수가 쓸어 갑니다. 설령 돈을 잘 지킨다 해도 돈을 쓸 수 있는 시간은 계속 날아갑니다. 눈 깜빡하는 사이에 우리 인생도 가다 가다 아주 사라져 버리고 맙니다.

‘그렇다면 어떻게 해야 할까요?’ 몇 절 다음에 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “항상 여호와를 경외하라 정녕히 네 장래가 있겠고 네 소망이 끊어지지 아니하리라”(17-18절). 예수님께 인생을 투자하십시오. 오직 예수님만이 우리를 영원히 지키실 수 있습니다.

Going, Going, Gone

The mischievous artist Banksy pulled off another practical joke. His painting Girl with Balloon sold for one million pounds at Sotheby’s auction house in London. Moments after the auctioneer yelled “Sold,” an alarm sounded and the painting slipped halfway through a shredder mounted inside the bottom of the frame. Banksy tweeted a picture of bidders gasping at his ruined masterpiece, with the caption, “Going, going, gone.”

Banksy relished pulling one over on the wealthy, but he need not have bothered. Wealth itself has plenty of pranks up its sleeve. God says, “Do not wear yourself out to get rich . . . . Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle” (VV. 4–5).

Few things are less secure than money. We work hard to earn it, yet there are many ways to lose it. Investments go sour, inflation erodes, bills come, thieves steal, and fire and flood destroy. Even if we manage to keep our money, the time we have to spend it continually flies. Blink, and your life is going, going, gone.

What to do? God tells us a few verses later: “always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off” (VV. 17–18). Invest your life in Jesus; He alone will keep you forever. - MIKE WITTMER

약한 무릎을 강하게 하심

어렸을 때 나는 도티 람보가 1967년에 쓴 “그는 내 잘못이 아닌 나의 필요를 보시네.”라는 노래 제목을 “그는 내 잘못이 아닌 나의 무릎을 보시네.”로 착각하였습니다.(역주: 발음이 비슷한 ‘need’를 ‘knees’로 잘못 들음) 어린아이의 논리로는 왜 하나님이 무릎을 보신다는 것인지 궁금했습니다. 무릎이 약한 것이기 때문인가? 나는 ‘약한 무릎’이라는 말이 “두려워하다”라는 것을 의미한다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 나중에 나는 도티가 남동생 에디가 자신이 저지른 잘못들 때문에 사랑받을 수 없는 존재라고 생각하는 것을 보고 하나님의 무조건적인 사랑에 대해 가사를 썼다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 도티는 하나님이 그의 약함을 아시지만 여전히 그를 사랑하신다고 동생에게 확신시켜주었습니다.

하나님의 무조건적인 사랑은 이스라엘과 유다 사람들이 ‘나약했던’ 많은 순간들에 드러납니다. 하나님은 이사야와 같은 선지자를 보내 빗나가는 그의 백성들에게 말씀을 전했습니다. 이사야 35장에서 선지자는 하나님의 회복에 관한 소망을 전해줍니다. 희망이 생긴 그들은 힘을 얻어 “약한 손을 강하게 하며 떨리는 무릎을 굳게 하였습니다”(3절). 하나님의 백성들은 힘을 얻어 이제는 다른 사람들을 격려할 수 있게 되었습니다. 이것이 바로 이사야가 4절에서 “겁내는 자들에게 이르기를 굳세어라 두려워하지 말라”라고 가르친 이유입니다.

두려움을 느끼십니까? 하늘에 계신 아버지께 이야기하십시오. 하나님은 진리의 말씀과 하나님의 임재의 능력으로 연약한 무릎을 강하게 해주십니다. 그러면 우리도 다른 사람들을 격려할 수 있게 될 것입니다.

Strengthening Weak Knees

When I was a kid, I thought the song title “He Looked Beyond My Fault and Saw My Need,” written by Dottie Rambo in 1967, was “He Looked Beyond My Faults and Saw My Knees.” Employing the logic of a child, I wondered why God would look at knees. Was it because they were weak? I knew that weak-kneed meant “afraid.” I later discovered that Dottie had written the song about God’s unconditional love in response to her brother Eddie’s belief that he was unlovable because of the wrong things he’d done. Dottie assured him that God saw his weakness but loved him anyway.

God’s unconditional love is apparent throughout the many weak-kneed moments of the people of Israel and Judah. He sent prophets like Isaiah with messages for His wayward people. In Isaiah 35, the prophet shares the hope of God’s restoration. The encouragement that would come as a result of embracing hope would “strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way” (V. 3). Through the encouragement they received, God’s people would in turn be able to encourage others. This is why Isaiah instructs in verse 4, “Say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear.’ ”

Feeling weak-kneed? Talk to your heavenly Father. He strengthens weak knees through the truth of the Scriptures and the power of His presence. You’ll then be able to encourage others. - LINDA WASHINGTON

풍성한 삶

제1차 세계대전이 막바지에 이르렀던 1918년에 사진작가 에릭 엔스트롬은 그의 작품들을 하나로 정리하고 있었습니다. 그는 많은 이들이 심한 허무에 빠졌던 시절에 풍성한 느낌을 갖게 해주었던 사진 하나를 꼭 포함시키고 싶었습니다. 탁자에 앉아 두 손을 모으고 머리 숙여 기도하고 있는 수염 난 노인을 찍은 그의 사진은 지금도 사랑받고 있습니다. 노인 앞 탁자 위에는 책 한 권, 안경, 죽 한 그릇, 빵 한 덩어리와 칼 한 자루만이 놓여있습니다. 여기에는 더 넣을 것도, 뺄 것도 없었습니다.

어떤 이들은 이 사진에서 궁색함이 느껴진다고 합니다. 그러나 엔스트롬이 보여주려는 것은 정반대입니다. 감사하며 사는 풍성한 삶은 이런 것이며, 우리 모두도 상황에 상관없이 이렇게 살 수 있다는 것입니다. 예수님은 요한복음 10장 에서 “풍성한 삶”(10절)에 관한 복음을 전해주십니다. 우리가 ‘풍성함’을 ‘많은 소유’와 동일시할 때 그 복음을 심각하게 손상시키는 것입니다. 예수님이 말씀하시는 풍성함은 재물이나 부동산 같은 세상적 차원으로는 측정할 수 없습니다. 그보다는 선한 목자이신 주님께서 “양들을 위해 자기 목숨”(11절)을 주시고 우리 자신과 일상적인 필요를 돌보아주시는 것에 대한 감사에 넘치는 마음과 뜻과 목숨과 힘을 의미합니다. 이것이 하나님과의 관계를 누리면서 우리 모두에게 가능한 풍성한 삶입니다.

Life to the Full

The year was 1918, near the end of World War I, and photographer Eric Enstrom was putting together a portfolio of his work. He wanted to include one that communicated a sense of fullness in a time that felt quite empty to so many people. In his now much-loved photo, a bearded old man sits at a table with his head bowed and his hands clasped in prayer. On the surface before him there is only a book, spectacles, a bowl of gruel, a loaf of bread, and a knife. Nothing more, but also nothing less.

Some might say the photograph reveals scarcity. But Enstrom’s point was quite the opposite: Here is a full life, one lived in gratitude, one you and I can experience as well regardless of our circumstances. Jesus announces the good news in John 10: “life . . . to the full” (V. 10). We do a grave disservice to such good news when we equate full with many things. The fullness Jesus speaks of isn’t measured in worldly categories like riches or real estate, but rather a heart, mind, soul, and strength brimming in gratitude that the Good Shepherd gave “his life for the sheep” (V. 11), and cares for us and our daily needs. This is a full life—enjoying relationship with God—that’s possible for every one of us. - JOHN BLASE

오래된 질그릇

나는 여러 해 동안 오래된 질그릇을 모아 왔습니다. 내가 가장 아끼는 것은 아브라함 당시의 유적지에서 발굴된 것입니다. 최소한 그것은 우리 집에서 내 나이 보다 더 오래된 것입니다! 보기에는 보잘 것 없습니다. 때가 끼고 금이 가고 부서진 자국도 있고, 잘 닦아줘야 될 것 같아 보입니다. 나는 내가 단지 진흙으로 빚어진 인간이라는 것을 자신에게 상기시키기 위해 그것을 보관하고 있습니다. 비록 부서지기 쉽고 약하지만 나는 측량할 수도 없는 귀중한 보배인 예수님을 지니고 있습니다. “우리가 이 보배[예수님]를 질그릇에 가졌으니”(고린도후서 4:7).

바울은 계속해서 말합니다. “우리가 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도 싸이지 아니하며 답답한 일을 당하여도 낙심하지 아니하며 박해를 받아도 버린바 되지 아니하며 거꾸러뜨림을 당하여도 망하지 아니하고”(8-9절). ‘우겨쌈을 당하고 답답한 일을 당하고 박해를 받고 거꾸러뜨림을 당하는 것.’ 이런 것들은 질그릇이 견뎌내야 할 압박들입니다. ‘싸이지 아니하고 낙심하지 않으며 버린바 되지 아니하고 망하지 않는 것.’ 이것들은 우리 안에서 대응하시는 예수님의 능력의 결과들입니다.

“우리는 언제나 예수의 죽임 당하심을 우리 몸에 짊어지고 다닙니다”(10절, 새번역). 이러한 태도는 바로 날마다 죽으신 예수님의 성품을 말해줍니다. 이러한 태도는 또한 우리 안에 살아계시는 하나님 한분을 온전히 신뢰하며 자신의 공덕을 기꺼이 부인하는 우리의 성품이 됩니다.

“예수의 생명이 또한 우리 몸에 나타나게 하려 함이라” (10절). ‘예수님의 아름다움이 낡은 질그릇에 나타나는 것’, 이것이 결과입니다.

An Old Clay Pot

I’ve acquired a number of old clay pots over the years. My favorite was excavated from a site dated during Abraham’s time. It’s at least one item in our home that is older than I! It’s not much to look at: stained, cracked, chipped, and in need of a good scrubbing. I keep it to remind me that I’m just a man made out of mud. Though fragile and weak, I carry an immeasurably precious treasure—Jesus. “We have this treasure [Jesus] in jars of clay” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:7).

Paul continues: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (VV. 8–9). Hard pressed, perplexed, persecuted, struck down. These are the pressures the pot must bear. Not crushed, in despair, abandoned, destroyed. These are the effects of the counteracting strength of Jesus in us.

“We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus” (V. 10). This is the attitude that characterized Jesus who died to Himself every day. And this is the attitude that can characterize us—a willingness to die to self-effort, trusting solely in the sufficiency of the One who lives in us.

“So that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our mortal body” (V. 10). This is the outcome: the beauty of Jesus made visible in an old clay pot. - DAVID H. ROPER

우정의 벤치

아프리카에 있는 나라 짐바브웨는 전쟁으로 인한 상처와 높은 실업률로 국민들이 절망에 빠질 수도 있지만 “우정의 벤치” 에 가서 희망을 얻습니다. 희망을 잃은 사람들이 거기에 가면 훈련을 받은 “할머니들”과 이야기를 나눌 수 있는데, 이분들은 우울증으로 고생하는 사람들, 그 나라의 쇼나 말로는 ‘쿠푼기시사’ 곧 “생각이 너무 많은” 사람들의 이야기를 들어주는 교육을 받은 나이 많은 여인들입니다.

우정의 벤치 프로젝트는 잔지바르, 런던, 뉴욕 등 다른 곳에서도 시작되고 있습니다. 런던의 한 연구원은 “결과에 무척 감동을 받았다”고 말했습니다. 뉴욕의 한 전문상담원도 그 말에 동의합니다. “그저 벤치에 앉아 있는 게 아니라 모르는 사이에 어느덧 당신을 염려해주는 그 사람과의 따뜻한 대화 속에 깊이 들어가게 됩니다.”

이 프로젝트는 전능하신 하나님과 대화하는 따뜻함과 경이로움을 불러 일으켜줍니다. 모세는 하나님과 대화하기 위해 벤치가 아닌 장막을 세웠는데 그것을 만남의 장막이라고 불렀습니다. 거기에서 “사람이 자기의 친구와 이야기함 같이 여호와께서는 모세와 대면하여 말씀하셨습니다”(출애굽기 33:11). 모세를 보좌했던 여호수아는 하나님과의 시간을 소중히 여겨 성막을 아예 떠나지 않으려 했습니다(11절).

오늘날 우리에게는 만남의 장막이 필요하지 않습니다. 예수님이 하나님 아버지를 가까이 모셔오셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희를 친구라 하였노니 내가 내 아버지께 들은 것을 다 너희에게 알게 하였음이라”(요한복음 15:15). 그렇습니다. 우리 하나님은 우리를 기다리고 계십니다. 하나님은 우리 마음에 가장 현명한 조력자이시며 우리를 잘 이해하는 친구이십니다. 지금 하나님과 대화를 나누십시오.

Friendship Bench

In the African country of Zimbabwe, war trauma and high unemployment can leave people in despair—until they find hope on a “friendship bench.” Hopeless people can go there to talk with trained “grandmothers”—elderly women taught to listen to people struggling with depression, known in that nation’s Shona language as kufungisisa, or “thinking too much.”

The Friendship Bench Project is being launched in other places, including Zanzibar, London, and New York City. “We were thrilled to bits with the results,” said one London researcher. A New York counselor agreed. “Before you know it, you’re not on a bench, you’re just inside a warm conversation with someone who cares.”

The project evokes the warmth and wonder of talking with our Almighty God. Moses put up not a bench but a tent to commune with God, calling it the tent of meeting. There, “the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (EXODUS 33:11). Joshua, his assistant, wouldn’t even leave the tent, perhaps because he so valued his time with God (V. 11).

Today we no longer need a tent of meeting. Jesus has brought the Father near. As He told His disciples, “I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” (JOHN 15:15). Yes, our God awaits us. He’s our heart’s wisest helper, our understanding Friend. Talk with Him now. - PATRICIA RAYBON

아이들을 하나님께 인도하기

노골적인 한 무신론자는 부모가 자녀들에게 종교가 진실인 것처럼 가르치는 것은 도덕적이지 않다고 믿습니다. 그는 더 나아가 부모의 신앙을 아이들에게 물려주는 것도 아동학대라고 주장합니다. 이런 견해들은 극단적이기는 하지만, 나는 자기 자녀에게 신앙을 갖도록 과감히 권하기를 꺼려하는 부모들의 이야기를 듣고 있습니다. 우리 대부분은 정치나 영양 있는 음식, 운동경기에 대해 자녀들에게 적극적으로 영향을 끼치려 하면서도, 어떤 사람들은 무슨 이유 때문인지 하나님에 대한 우리의 믿음은 다르게 취급합니다.

이와는 대조적으로 바울은 디모데가 어떻게 성경을 배웠는지를 기록합니다. “어려서부터 성경을 알았나니 성경은 능히 너로 하여금 그리스도 안에 있는 믿음으로 말미암아 구원에 이르는 지혜가 있게 하느니라”(디모데후서 3:15). 디모데는 성인이 된 다음 남의 도움 없이 자신의 이성으로 믿음에 이른 것이 아니었습니다. 그보다는
그의 어머니가 그의 마음속에 하나님을 향한 마음을 키워주었고, 그는 배운 바를 계속 키워나갔던 것입니다(14절). 하나님이 생명이요 참된 지혜의 원천이시라면 우리 가족들에게 하나님을 향한 사랑을 다정하게 가르치는 것이 정말 중요합니다.

아이들에게 영향을 미치는 믿음의 체계들이 많이 있습니다. 텔레비전 쇼나 영화, 음악, 선생님, 친구, 언론 매체 등 모든 것이 믿음에 관한 (확연하게 또는 눈에 안 보이게) 어떤 가정을 포함하고 있기 때문에 실제적인 영향을 끼치는 것입니다. 이에 대해 우리가 침묵하지 않기를 바랍니다. 우리가 경험해온 아름다움과 은혜 때문에 우리 아이들을 더욱 하나님께로 인도해야 할 것입니다.

Guiding Children to God

An outspoken atheist believes it’s immoral for parents to teach their children religion as though it were actually true. He even claims that parents who pass along their faith to their children are committing child abuse. Though these views are extreme, I do hear from parents who are hesitant to boldly encourage their children toward faith. While most of us readily hope to influence our children with our view of politics or nutrition or sports, for some reason some of us treat our convictions about God differently.

In contrast, Paul wrote of how Timothy had been taught “from infancy . . . the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 TIMOTHY 3:15). Timothy didn’t arrive at faith as an adult through the power of his own, unaided reason. Rather, his mother nurtured his heart toward God; then he continued in what he had learned (V. 14). If God is life, the source of true wisdom, then it’s vital for us to tenderly cultivate a love for God in our families.

There are many belief systems that are influencing our children. TV shows, movies, music, teachers, friends, the media—each of these carry assumptions (either obvious or under the radar) about faith that exert real influence. May we choose not to be silent. The beauty and grace we’ve experienced compels us to guide our children toward God. - WINN COLLIER
