이방인을 사랑함

일류 재봉 기술자였던 친구의 아내는 오랜 질병으로 세상을 떠나기 전 한 가지 사랑의 계획을 세워 자신의 모든 재봉 장비를 우리 마을의 재봉 조합에 기증했습니다. 그 기증으로 새로 도착한 이민자들을 가르치는 데 필요한 재봉틀과 재단 테이블, 그 외 여러 것들이 갖춰지게 되었습니다. 그녀의 남편이 말했습니다. “옷감만 스물 여덟 상자나 되었어요. 그 물품들을 다 가지러 여성 여섯 명이 왔는데, 이민자 학생들이 기술을 배우기 위해 아주 열심히 일한다고 했어요.”

다른 사람들은 그런 새 이민자들을 달갑지 않게 표현합니다. 이민자들이 처한 어려운 상황은 논쟁거리가 되어 분열을 일으키고 있습니다.

그러나 모세는 이렇게 하나님의 관점을 제시합니다. “너는 이방 나그네를 압제하지 말라 너희가 애굽 땅에서 나그네 되었었은즉 나그네의 사정을 아느니라”(출애굽기 23:9). 더 나아가 그는 낯선 이방인들에 대한 하나님의 명령을 전해주었습니다. “너희가 너희의 땅에서 곡식을 거둘 때에... 네 포도원의 열매를 다 따지 말며 네 포도원에 떨어진 열매도 줍지 말고 가난한 사람과 거류민을 위하여 버려두라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라”(레위기 19:9-10).

하나님은 또 이렇게 선언하셨습니다. “거류민이 너희의 땅에 거류하여 함께 있거든 너희는 그를 학대하지 말고 너희와 함께 있는 거류민을 너희 중에서 낳은 자 같이 여기며 자기 같이 사랑하라 너희도 애굽 땅에서 거류민이 되었었느니라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라”(33-34절).

하나님이 기준을 정해 주셨습니다. 우리 가운데 있는 낯선 이들에게 사랑을 보여줄 수 있도록 하나님께서 우리 마음에 복을 내려 주시기를 소망합니다.

LOVING THE STRANGER

A friend’s wife, a master seamstress, made a loving plan before she passed away from a long illness. She donated all her sewing equipment to our town’s sewing guild, providing sewing machines, cutting tables, and more for classes teaching newly arrived immigrants. “I counted twenty-eight boxes of fabric alone,” her husband told us. “Six women came by to pick up everything. Their students are hard workers, eager to learn a skill.”

Others describe such newcomers in less flattering ways. The plight of immigrants has become a divisive issue.

Moses, however, issued God’s view: “Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners” (EXODUS 23:9). He further shared God’s decree regarding strangers. “When you reap the harvest of your land . . . do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God” (LEVITICUS 19:9-10).

God also declared, “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God” (VV. 33-34).

God set the standard. May He bless our hearts to show love to the strangers among us.

슬퍼하시는 하나님

2023년 2월, 튀르키예에서 엄청난 지진이 발생한 후 잊지 못할 사진 한 장이 뉴스에 올라왔습니다. 한 아버지가 무너진 건물 잔해 속에서 손을 뻗고 있는 자신의 딸의 손을 붙잡고 앉아 있는 모습이었습니다. 우리는 그 사진에서 딸이 자던 매트리스의 모서리와 지금 그의 손 안에 있는 딸의 생기 없는 손가락들을 봅니다. 아버지의 얼굴은 굳어 있고, 아주 깊은 슬픔에 잠겨 있습니다.

이 아버지의 굳은 얼굴을 보면 우리 하나님 아버지의 모습이 보입니다. 창세기는 하나님께서 죄로 완전히 파괴된 자신의 창조물을 보고 슬퍼하시며 “마음 아파하셨다”(6:6, 새번역)고 말합니다. 이사야는 미래의 메시아에 대해 “그는... 아주 깊은 슬픔을 잘 아는 슬픔의 사람이었다”(53:3, NLT)고 말합니다. 하나님은 우리를 위해 그리고 우리와 함께 슬퍼하시며, 우리 삶의 잔해 속에 앉아 우리에게 손을 뻗고 계십니다. “나는 너의 주 하나님이다. 내가 너의 오른손을 붙잡고 있다”(41:13, 새번역).

현재 당신이 어떤 끔찍한 상황이나 사랑하는 사람의 죽음, 혹은 자신의 죄로 인한 결과 등 어떤 파괴적인 상태에 직면해 있더라도 하나님이 당신과 함께 슬퍼하고 계시다는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 어떤 지진이 당신의 삶을 흔들더라도 하나님께서 손을 뻗어 당신의 손을 잡고 계시다는 것을 깨달으십시오. 그리고 현재 어떤 슬픔 가운데 있더라도 “두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 도우리라”(13 절)고 하시는 사랑의 하나님의 말씀을 들으십시오.

A GRIEVING GOD

In the aftermath of Turkey’s devastating earthquake in February 2023, a haunting photo came across newswires: a father sitting amid ruins holding a hand extending from the rubble—the hand of his daughter. We see the edge of the mattress where his daughter had been sleeping, and we see her lifeless fingers that he now holds. His face is grim; his grief is profound.

In this father’s gritted face, I see a semblance of our own heavenly Father. Genesis tells us that God was grieved by the devastation of sin in His creation: “It broke his heart” (6:6 NLT). Isaiah, speaking of the future Messiah, says, “He was . . . a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief” (53:3 NLT). God grieves for us, and with us, and sits at the edge of the rubble of our lives, reaching for us: “I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand” (41:13).

Whatever devastation you currently face—a tragic circumstance, the loss of a dear one, or maybe even the effects of your own sin—know that God grieves with you. Whatever earthquake has shaken your life, see that God is reaching for your hand. Whatever your current sorrow, hear the God of love saying to you, “Do not fear; I will help you” (V. 13).

함께하는 더 나은 삶

메기는 10년간 마약 투여로 계속 교도소를 들락거렸습니다. 삶의 변화가 없다면 곧 이전 삶으로 되돌아갈 것이 분명했습니다. 그러던 중 메기는 마약 남용으로 정맥이 터져 손을 잃을 뻔했던, 한때 중독자 한스를 만났습니다. 한스는 “그때 처음으로 하나님께 부르짖었어요.”라고 말했습니다. 한스는 지금 하나님의 응답으로 교도소 중독자들의 회복을 돕는 단체의 동료 전문가가 되어 있습니다.

미국 교도소에는 전과자들이 지역사회로 복귀할 수 있도록 지원하는 것을 돕는 ‘스톤 수프’라는 프로그램이 있습니다. 그 프로그램을 통해 메기는 절제하는 생활을 할 수 있는 숙소로 들어가 마약 없는 삶을 유지하고 있습니다. 한스는 이제 메기와 다른 사람들에게 취업 알선과 교육 선택, 치료, 가족 지원 등, 종합적인 접근 방식을 통해 도움을 주고 있습니다.

성경은 지혜로운 동반자 관계가 지닌 힘을 이렇게 묘사하고 있습니다. “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것임이라 혹시 그들이 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 붙들어 일으키려니와 홀로 있어 넘어지고 붙들어 일으킬 자가 없는 자에게는 화가 있으리라”(전도서 4:9-10).

한 배고픈 나그네가 마을 사람들을 설득하여 각자가 한 가지씩 재료를 가져와 모두를 위해 맛있는 수프를 만드는 ‘스톤 수프’ 이야기처럼, 성경은 우리가 함께하면 더 강해지고 더 좋아진다고 확인시켜 줍니다(12절). 하나님의 계획은 우리가 공동체 안에서 서로 돕고 또 도움을 받으면서 사는 것입니다. 그것은 동화 속의 이야기가 아니라 삶에서 가능한 진실입니다.

BETTER TOGETHER

Meggie’s ten years of drug use kept her in and out of jail. Without a life change, she’d soon return. Then she met Hans, a former addict who almost lost his hand when a vein ruptured due to his substance abuse. “That was the first time I cried out to God,” Hans said. God’s answer prepared him to be a peer specialist for an organization that coordinates recovery for jailed addicts.

Called Stone Soup, the program is helping an American jail provide formerly imprisoned people with support to reenter their communities. Through the plan, Meggie moved into a soberliving house and has stayed sober. Hans now helps her and others with job placement, educational options, treatment, and family resources—a coordinated approach.

The Bible describes the strength of wise partnering. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (ECCLESIASTES 4:9-10). However, “pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up” (V. 10).

Like the “Stone Soup” folktale, where a hungry traveler invites townspeople to each share one ingredient to make a delicious soup for all, the Bible confirms we’re stronger and better together (V. 12). God’s plan is for us to live in community, helping others and receiving help in return. That’s no fairy tale; it’s truth for life.

하나님의 은혜로운 풍요

이네스 멕시아(1870-1938)는 51세의 나이에 식물학을 공부하기로 결심하고 대학에 들어갔습니다. 멕시아는 13년 동안 중남미를 돌아다니면서 500여 종의 새로운 식물을 발견했습니다. 하지만 그녀 혼자만 이런 탐구를 하는 것은 아닙니다. 과학자들은 매년 거의 2천 종의 새로운 식물을 발견합니다.

창세기 1장에서 하나님은 형태도 없고 공허하며 흑암에 싸여 있는 지구(2 절)를 취하셔서 풍요로움이 가득한 곳으로 만드셨습니다. 셋째 날에 하나님은 물을 한 곳으로 모아 마른 땅이 드러나게 하시고, “풀과 씨 맺는 채소와 각기 종류대로 씨 가진 열매 맺는 나무”(11절)를 내게 하심으로 사람이 살기 좋은 곳으로 만들기 시작하셨습니다. 그것들은 우리가 먹을 수 있는 씨 맺는 채소와 열매 맺는 나무였습니다. 하나님은 열매 맺는 나무를 한 종류만 만들지 않으시고 아주 많이 만드셨습니다.

하나님은 창조주(1절)이실 뿐 아니라 또한 창조적인 분이십니다. 하나님은 각기 다른 종류의 식물과 동물, 별들을 만드시는 것을 즐겨 하십니다. 하나님이 우리에게 먹을 것을 주시는 것만 신경 쓰셨다면, 씨 맺는 채소 한 가지만 만드셨을 것입니다. 하지만 아주 풍요로우신 하나님은 결코 일을 반쯤 하고 끝내신 적이 없습니다.

하나님의 풍요로움은 창조물에만 국한되지 않습니다. 하나님은 그분의 은혜에 있어서도 관대하십니다. 바울은 말합니다. “우리 주의 은혜가 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음과 사랑과 함께 넘치도록 풍성하였도다”(디모데전서 1:14). 하나님의 창조물에게 하신 것처럼, 하나님의 은혜는 우리를 생각하시며 우리의 필요 이상으로 내려 주십니다.

GOD’S GRACIOUS ABUNDANCE

At the age of fifty-one, Ynes Mexia (1870-1938) decided to study botany, enrolling as a college freshman. Over her thirteenyear career, she traveled across Central and South America, discovering five hundred new species of plants. She’s not alone in her quest. Scientists discover nearly two thousand new plants each year.

In Genesis 1, God took a formless, empty, and dark earth (V. 2) and created a place full of abundance. On the third day, God separated the waters to create dry land and began making it hospitable for humans by having “the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit” (V. 11). These were seed-bearing plants and fruit trees from which we could eat. God didn’t create just one type of fruit tree but an abundance.

God isn’t only the Creator (V. 1); He’s also creative. He enjoys making different types of plants and animals and stars. If God cared only about giving us food, He could have made just one kind of seed-bearing plant. But God is extravagant and never does things in half measures.

God’s abundance isn’t limited to His creation. He’s also generous with His grace. As Paul said, “The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (1 TIMOTHY 1:14). As with God’s creation, His grace is more than we need and offered with us in mind.

하나님을 따르는 삶

몇 년 전 파리에 갔을 때, 나는 친구와 에펠탑 근처에서 만나 저녁을 먹기로 했는데 좀 여유 시간이 있어서 혼자 도시를 돌아다녔습니다. 휴대폰 배터리가 다 소진될 때까지는 모든 일이 순조로웠습니다. 지도가 없어서 어디로 가고 있는지 몰랐지만, 도시에서 자란 나는 당황하지 않고 우뚝 솟은 에펠탑에 눈을 고정시키고 센 강을 따라 계속 걸어갔습니다. 그런 내 계획은 잘 들어맞았지만 탑에 점점 더 가까워질수록 주위의 건물들에 가려 그만 탑이 보이지 않게 되었습니다.

그렇게 큰 구조물이 내 눈 앞에서 사라질 수 있다는 게 놀라웠습니다! 마침내 나는 도움이 필요하다는 것을 깨닫고 길을 물어 친구를 만났습니다.

우리가 전혀 예측할 수 없는 삶을 살아가면서 장애물이나 어려움을 만날 때 우리는 하나님께 도움과 방향을 구할 수 있습니다. 하나님께 구하면 길을 잃지 않게 되고, 돌아가거나 포기하고 싶은 유혹을 받을 때 그러지 않도록 도움을 받을 수 있습니다. 특히 삶이 어렵고 혼란스러워 보일 때 하나님께 인도하심을 구할 수 있습니다.

잠언 3:5-6에서 솔로몬은 독자들에게 “너는 마음을 다하여 여호와를 신뢰하고 네 명철을 의지하지 말라 너는 범사에 그를 인정하라 그리하면 네 길을 지도하시리라”고 하면서 그들을 격려하고 있습니다.

기도와 성경 읽기를 통해 하나님의 지혜를 구할 때 하나님이 우리를 인도해 주실 것입니다. 하나님을 믿고 그분의 인도를 따르도록 합시다.

FOLLOWING GOD

On my free day in Paris during a visit a few years ago, I had some time to roam around the famed city by myself before meeting a friend by the Eiffel Tower for dinner. All was fine until my phone’s battery died. I didn’t have a map, so I wasn’t sure where I was going, but this city girl didn’t panic. I just continued to walk along the Seine River and kept my eyes on the towering Eiffel Tower. My plan worked until I got closer to the landmark that somehow disappeared behind the surrounding buildings.

I was astonished that such a large structure could be hidden in plain sight! I finally realized I needed help, so I asked for directions and found my friend.

Life can be so unpredictable. As we face obstacles and challenges in life, we can ask God for help and direction. Asking Him helps us not get lost along our journey or be tempted to take detours or to quit. Especially when life seems hard or confusing, we can turn to God for guidance.

In Proverbs 3:5-6, Solomon encourages his readers by telling them to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

As we seek God’s wisdom through prayer and reading the Bible, He’ll guide us. Let’s continue to trust Him and follow His lead.

하나님의 아들

내 동생 스캇은 최근에 제2차 세계대전 당시 아버지의 병역 기록을 입수했습니다. 기록에는 놀랍거나 충격적인 내용은 없었으며, 아버지가 어떤 사람이었는지에 대한 내용도 없었고, 다만 단순히 사실들, 곧 데이터만 기록되어 있었습니다. 자료를 읽는 것은 흥미로웠지만 아버지에 대해 어떤 새로운 것도 발견하지 못한 것 같아 아쉬웠습니다.

감사하게도 예수님의 생애와 사역에 대한 기록을 제공하는 사복음서는 단순한 자료 이상의 의미를 지니고 있습니다. 복음서는 예수님이 이 땅에 계셨을 때 어떤 분이셨고 어떤 일을 하셨으며 어떤 말씀을 하셨는지 알려주고 있습니다. 마가복음은 “하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 복음의 시작이라”(1:1) 고 하는, 마가의 논지를 증명하기 위해 기록되었습니다. 마가는 곧바로 세례 요한이 이 메시아에 대해 어떻게 증언했는지 알려줍니다. 요한은 “나보다 능력 많으신 이가 내 뒤에 오시나니 나는 굽혀 그의 신발끈을 풀기도 감당하지 못하겠노라”(7절)고 말했습니다. 마가의 이 같은 언급은 예수님이 하나님의 아들이심을 분명히 보여줍니다. 요한 사도는 예수님의 생애에 대해 기록하면서, “오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려는 것이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라” (요한복음 20:31)고 했습니다.

THE SON OF GOD

Recently, my brother Scott acquired our dad’s military service records from World War II. As I studied the pages, there was nothing startling or shocking—nothing about who Dad was. There were mere facts. Data. It was interesting to read but ultimately dissatisfying because I didn’t come away feeling like I learned anything new about Dad.

Thankfully, in giving us a record of the life and work of Jesus, the four gospels are much more than just data. They are descriptions that reveal who Jesus was in His time on this earth as well as what He did and said. In Mark’s gospel, that record was for the purpose of proving Mark’s thesis statement: “The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God” (1:1). Immediately, Mark tells us how John the Baptist testified about this Messiah. John said, “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie” (V. 7). Mark’s account makes it clear that Jesus is the Son of God. As John the disciple adds in his own account of Jesus’ life, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (JOHN 20:31).

The evidence of Jesus’ life is abundant. These questions remain: What does He mean to you? How has He changed your life?

아주 영광스러운 지식

중세 신학자 토마스 아퀴나스는 오랫동안 인내하며 하나님을 찾는 삶에 헌신했습니다. 그의 가족은 그가 소박함과 연구, 설교의 삶에 헌신하는 수도원인 도미니카 수도회에 가입하는 것을 막으려고 1년 동안 그를 감금하기도 했습니다. 평생을 성경과 창조에 관해 연구하며 거의 백 권의 책을 저술한 아퀴나스는 하나님에 대한 강렬한 체험을 하고 나서 이렇게 썼습니다. “나는 더 이상 글을 쓸 수 없습니다. 하나님께서 나에게 너무나 영광스러운 지식을 주셨기 때문에 내 저작에 담긴 모든 것은 마치 지푸라기와 같습니다.” 그리고 불과 3개월 뒤에 그는 죽었습니다.

바울 사도도 하나님과의 경험이 말로 표현할 수 없을 정도로 압도적 이었다고 말합니다. “낙원으로 이끌려 가서 말로 표현할 수 없는 말을 들었으니 사람이 가히 이르지 못할 말이로다”(고린도후서 12:4). “이 지극히 큰 계시 때문에” 바울은 계속 겸손하게 하나님을 의지하도록 알 수 없는 “육체의 가시”(7절)를 받았습니다. 그는 “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여 짐이라”(9절)는 말씀도 들었습니다.

하나님에 대해 더 많이 알수록 우리는 그분을 말로 표현하기가 얼마나 불가능한지 더 잘 알게 됩니다. 그러나 우리가 여전히 연약하고 무슨 말을 해야 할 지 몰라도, 그럼에도 그리스도의 은혜와 아름다움은 뚜렷하게 빛을 내고 있습니다.

SUCH GLORIOUS KNOWLEDGE

Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas endured much to dedicate himself to a life of seeking God. His family imprisoned him for a year in an attempt to discourage him from joining the Dominican Order, a monastic group dedicated to a life of simplicity, study, and preaching. After a lifetime of studying Scripture and creation, and writing nearly one hundred volumes, Aquinas had such an intense experience of God that he wrote, “I can no longer write, for God has given me such glorious knowledge that all contained in my works are as straw.” He died only three months later.

The apostle Paul also described an experience from God so overwhelming that it was impossible to put into words, when he was “caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:4). “Because of these surpassingly great revelations,” Paul was given an unidentified “thorn in [his] flesh” (V. 7) to keep him humble and reliant on God. He was told, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (V. 9).

The more we understand about God, the more we understand how impossible it is for us to capture who He is in words. Yet in our weakness and in our loss for what to say, Christ’s grace and beauty shines clearly through.

BRING IT TO GOD

Brian had been with the heart specialist for more than an hour. His friend remained in the waiting room, praying for wisdom and healing for his ailing friend. When Brian finally returned to the waiting room, he showed him the pile of papers he’d received. As he spread them out on a table, he discussed the various options being considered to treat his threatening condition. The two discussed the need to pray and ask God for wisdom for next steps. And then Brian said, “Whatever lies ahead, I’m in God’s hands.”

King Hezekiah “spread [a letter] out before the Lord” (2 KINGS 19:14). The words in the letter didn’t address a threatening medical condition but the threat of a powerful enemy—Assyria—that had seized all the fortified cities of Judah and was preparing to attack Jerusalem, its capital. Hezekiah prayed, “You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. . . . Now, Lord our God, deliver us” (VV. 15, 19). Soon the prophet Isaiah sent a message to Hezekiah, telling him, “The Lord . . . says: I have heard your prayer” (V. 20). And “that night” God destroyed the Assyrian army (V. 35).

Whatever you face today, spread it out before God. As you “present your requests to God” (PHILIPPIANS 4:6), He hears you and is with you. You can rest in His hands as you experience His wisdom, love, and hope.

A HELPING HAND

In the early 1900s, laws restricted Black people and immigrants in the United States from renting or buying property in Coronado, California. A Black man named Gus Thompson (who’d been born into slavery) had purchased land earlier and built a boarding home in Coronado before the discriminating laws were passed. In 1939, Gus rented to an Asian family, and eventually sold the land to them. Nearly eighty-five years later, after selling the property, some members of the Asian family are donating their proceeds from the sale to help Black college students. They’re also working to name a center at San Diego State University after Gus and his wife, Emma.

Leviticus also speaks of what it means to treat others well. God instructed His people, “Help [the poor] as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you” (25:35). He instructed the people to treat each other well and fairly, especially those in need. Out of reverent “fear” (V. 36) for Him, they were to help those who’d fallen on hard times and weren’t able to take care of themselves. They were to treat them just as they would treat a “foreigner and stranger” (V. 35)—with hospitality and love.

Gus Thompson and his wife helped a family that didn’t look like them. In return, that family is blessing many other people. Let’s extend God’s compassion to those in need as He helps us reveal His love for them.

후회 없음

NO REGRETS

There was no mention made of the stuff we often spend our lives chasing. That’s what palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware discovered as she sat with the dying. She intentionally questioned them: “Would you do anything differently if you could do it again?” Common themes surfaced, and she compiled a list of the top five regrets of the dying: (1) I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself. (2) I wish I hadn’t worked so hard. (3) I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings. (4) I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. And (5) I wish I’d let myself be happier.

Ware’s list brings to mind the parable Jesus tells in Luke 12. A rich man decides to build bigger barns to store his great harvest, after which he tells himself he’ll retire in style, sit back and relax, and live until he dies (VV. 18-19). But in that moment, God demands his life with a rather harsh address: “You fool!”—followed by a haunting question: in essence, “And what will become of all your stuff?” (V. 20).

Is it possible to die with zero regrets? That’s hard to know for certain. But what we do know is clearly expressed in Scripture— storing up stuff for ourselves is a dead end. True riches come from a life invested in God.
