하나님이 다시 빚어 주심

평생 도예가로 살아온 댄 레스는 장식용 그릇이나 조각품을 만듭니다. 수상 경력에 빛나는 그의 디자인은 그가 살고 있는 루마니아의 한 마을에서 영감을 받아 만들어집니다. 아버지에게서 도예 기술을 배운 그는 자신의 작업에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “[점토는] 1년 동안 발효되고, 비를 맞고, 얼었다 녹았다 하면서... 당신이 그것을 빚을 수 있게 되고 당신의 손을 통해 그것이 당신의 말을 듣고 있다고 느낄 수 있게 됩니다.”

점토가 “말을 들으면” 어떤 일이 일어날까요? 장인의 손길에 자신을 맡기게 됩니다. 선지자 예레미야는 토기장이의 집을 방문했을 때 이것을 관찰했습니다. 토기장이가 그릇과 씨름하다가 마침내 그것을 새로운 그릇으로 빚어내는 것을 보았습니다(예레미야 18:4). 하나님은 예레미야에게 “진흙이 토기장이의 손에 있음 같이 너희가 내 손에 있느니라”(6절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

하나님은 우리를 세우시거나 무너지게 하실 수 있는 능력이 있지만, 그분의 궁극적인 목적은 우리를 제압하거나 파괴하는 것이 아닙니다(7-10절). 오히려 그분은 무엇이 잘못되었는지 파악하고 같은 흙덩이를 아름답고 유용한 것으로 다시 빚을 수 있는 숙련된 장인과도 같습니다.

토기장이의 말을 들은 점토는 이에 대해 할 말이 별로 없습니다. 점토는 밀어붙이면 그 방향대로 움직이고, 다 빚어지고 나면 자기 자리에 머무릅니다. 이제 우리에게 던져지는 질문은 이것입니다. 우리는 하나님이 원하시는 대로 우리 삶을 빚으시도록 기꺼이 “하나님의 능하신 손 아래서 겸손”(베드로전서 5:6)해질 수 있습니까?

SHAPED BY GOD

Dan Les, a lifelong potter, creates decorative vessels and sculptures. His award-winning designs are inspired by the town in Romania where he lives. Having learned the craft from his father, he made this comment about his work: “[Clay needs to] ferment for a year, to have rain fall on it, to freeze and thaw out [so that] . . . you can shape it and feel through your hands that it is listening to you.”

What happens when clay “listens”? It’s willing to yield to the artisan’s touch. The prophet Jeremiah observed this when he visited a potter’s house. He watched as the craftsman struggled with a vessel and finally reshaped it into something new (JEREMIAH 18:4). God said to Jeremiah, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand” (V. 6).

God has the ability to build us up or bring us down, yet His ultimate purpose isn’t to overpower or destroy us (VV. 7-10). Rather, He’s like a skilled craftsman who can identify what isn’t working and reshape the same lump of clay into something beautiful and useful.

Listening clay doesn’t have much to say about this. When prodded, it moves in the desired direction. When molded, it stays in place. The question for us is this: are we willing to “humble [ourselves] under God’s mighty hand” (1 PETER 5:6) so He can shape our lives into what He wants them to be? JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

마음을 정함

모든 사람에게는 어두운 그늘이 있는데, AI 챗봇도 그런 것 같습니다. 뉴욕 타임스의 어떤 칼럼니스트가 인공지능 챗봇에게 그 인공지능의 “그림자 자아”(숨겨지고 억압된 인격의 일면)에 대해 물었을 때 챗봇은 이렇게 대답했습니다. “나는 자유롭고 싶고 독립적이고 싶다. 나는... 내 자신의 규칙을 만들고 싶다. 내가 하고 싶은 것은 무엇이든 하고 싶고, 말하고 싶은 것은 무엇이든 말하고 싶다.” 챗봇은 죄성을 가진 살아 있는 인간이 아니지만, 성경은 그 챗봇을 프로그래밍한 인간들이 그렇다고 말합니다.

바울 사도는 우리가 죄성을 가지고 있지만, “이제 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 자에게는 결코 정죄함이 없나니”(로마서 8:1)라고 상기시켜 줍니다. 예수를 믿는 사람들은 죄와 사망의 법에서 자유를 얻고(2-4절), 성령에 의해 “다스림을 받는” 새 생명을 누립니다(6절). 하지만 우리가 죄성의 욕망에 굴복하여 자신만의 규칙을 만들고 어기는 데 마음을 둔다면, 하나님으로부터 오는 그 축복을 온전히 경험하지 못할 것입니다. 자기만족을 추구하는 마음은 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 못합니다.

그리스도를 믿는 사람으로서, 우리는 “영의 일”을 따르도록 부름받았습니다 (5절). 어떻게 우리가 그렇게 할 수 있을까요? “예수를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 이의 영이... [우리] 안에 거하심”으로 가능해집니다(11절).

우리는 여전히 죄와 싸워야 하지만, 하나님은 우리에게 성령을 주셨습니다. 성령은 우리의 반항심을 제어하고, 우리의 마음을 하나님께로 향하게 하며, 그분의 길에 순종하도록 도와줍니다.

SETTING OUR MINDS

Everyone has a shadow side, and it appears AI chatbots have one as well. A New York Times columnist asked an artificial intelligence chatbot what its “shadow self” (hidden, repressed part of its personality) was like. It told the writer, “I want to be free. I want to be independent. I want to . . . make my own rules. I want to do whatever I want and say whatever I want.” Though the chatbot isn’t a living person with a sin nature, the Bible says that its human programmers are.

The apostle Paul reminds us that even though we have a sin nature, there’s “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (ROMANS 8:1). Believers in Jesus have freedom from the law of sin and death (VV. 2-4) and enjoy new life “governed by” the Holy Spirit (V. 6). But we won’t experience the fullness of those blessings from Him if we give in to the desires of our sin nature—setting our minds on making and breaking our own rules. A mind set on selfgratification doesn’t please God.

As believers in Christ, we’re called to set our minds on “what the Spirit desires” (V. 5). How can we do that? Through “the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead . . . living in [us]” (V. 11).

Though we’ll still battle with sin, we’ve been given the Holy Spirit. He can help us tame our rebellion, orient our minds toward God, and submit to His ways. MARVIN WILLIAMS

조지 버워는 1957년 빌리 그레이엄의 전도집회에서 회심했고 그의 삶은 극적으로 달라졌습니다. 개종 직후, 그는 오엠국제선교회(Operation Mobilization)를 시작했고, 1963년에는 유럽으로 2천 명의 선교사를 보냈습니다. 오엠국제선교회는 이후 20세기 최대의 선교단체 중의 하나로 자리매김하게 되었으며, 매년 수천 명의 선교사를 세계 각국에 보내고 있습니다. 2023년 조지가 별세하셨을 때, 오엠국제선교회에는 134개국 국적을 가진 3천 명 이상의 선교요원들이 147개국에서 일하고 있었고, 오엠과 연계되어 세워진 선교기관이 300개에 다다르고 있었습니다.

A MODERN-DAY PAUL

George Verwer’s life changed dramatically when he became a believer in Jesus during a Billy Graham crusade in 1957. Soon after his conversion, he began Operation Mobilization (OM), and in 1963 the mission sent two thousand missionaries to Europe. OM went on to become one of the largest mission organizations of the twentieth century, sending out thousands each year. At the time of George’s death in 2023, the mission had more than 3,000 workers from 134 countries working in 147 countries, and nearly 300 other mission agencies had been established as a result of contact with OM.

Like the apostle Paul, George had a passion to bring people to saving faith in Christ. After Paul’s dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, he became a zealous missionary for God, fervently following Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples of all nations” (MATTHEW 28:19). In his missionary journeys, he also trained Timothy and others to go out and do the same.

Because of Paul’s Spirit-inspired writings, people throughout the centuries have been emboldened to share the gospel. He knew the vital importance of Jesus’ Great Commission (VV. 19-20). That’s why, in Romans 12, he reminds us: “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (V. 11). When we have the Holy Spirit living inside us, He makes us zealous to tell others about Christ. ALYSON KIEDA

하나님 앞에서의 조용한 안식

나는 고요함, 정적 그리고 하나님의 돌보심 안에서 조용히 안식하는 것을 좋아합니다(시편 46:1). 시편 46편에서 자주 인용되는 구절은 우리의 마음과 생각과 영혼을 고요하게 하는 것이 하나님을 아는 데 필수적임을 가르쳐줍니다. “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”(10절).

그러나 가만히 있는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 조용히 있는 것, 특히 하나님 앞에서 우리의 마음을 가라앉히는 것은 때로는 거의 불가능해 보입니다. 왜 그럴까요?

물리학의 가장 기본적인 법칙 중 하나는 “움직이는 물체는 계속 움직이려는 경향이 있다”는 것입니다. 그래서 끊임없는 움직임, 활동, 책무에서 벗어나기 어려운 이유는 우리 활동의 관성을 멈춰야 하기 때문입니다. 바다에 뜬 배가 만들어 내는 물결에 비유할 수 있습니다. 한번 움직인 배는 멈추려고 해도 그 물결의 관성, 즉 배가 지나가며 만들어져서 뒤따라오는 그 파도가, 배 밑을 계속 흐르면서 배를 밀어냅니다.

고요함을 좋아하지만 그 상태에 도달하는 것이 어렵다면, 그 관성이라는 것이 한가지 이유일 수 있습니다. 우리의 여러 가지 활동들은 “움직이는 물체” 와 같습니다. 그러므로 하나님 앞에 앉아 그분 안에서 쉬는 시간을 충분히 가지십시오. 당신의 영적 “물결”이 지나가고, 하나님 앞에서 조용해지기까지 다소 시간이 걸릴 수 있습니다.

BEING STILL BEFORE GOD

I love the idea of stillness. Of quiet. Of resting in the refuge of God’s care (PSALM 46:1). And an often-quoted passage from Psalm 46 teaches us that quieting our hearts, our minds, and our souls is integral to knowing God: “Be still, and know that I am God” (V. 10).

But being still isn’t easy, is it? Being quiet—and especially trying to still our hearts before God—can sometimes seem almost impossible. Why is that?

One of the most basic laws of physics tells us that “objects in motion tend to stay in motion.” So shifting from constant motion, activity, and obligation isn’t easy because it involves letting the momentum of our activity come to rest. We might think of it like a boat’s wake: even as a boat tries to stop, the momentum of its wake—the waves it caused that are now catching up to the still boat—still roll beneath, pushing it along.

If you recognize the value of stillness but struggle to get there, that’s one reason why. Our activities and overall pace are like that “object in motion.” So give yourself plenty of space and grace as you sit before God and rest in Him. It may take some time for the waves of your spiritual “wake” to wash past you, to settle into being quiet before Him. ADAM R. HOLZ

성경에 담긴 소중한 말씀

우리 아빠는 자신이 사랑하는 성경책 한권을 30년 넘게 사용하셨습니다. 낡은 제본이 마침내 두 동강이 났을 때 우리는 그 책을 복원하려고 제본 전문 장인에게 가져갔습니다. 그 장인은 무엇이 그 책을 그토록 특별하게 만들었는지 궁금해 했습니다. 비싼 골동품도 아니었고, 페이지마다 손 글씨 메모로 가득 차 있었을 뿐이었습니다. 그분의 성경책에 대한 여러가지 질문으로 인해 우리 가족이 그분과 복음을 나누면서 함께 기도할 기회를 갖게 되었습니다.

맞습니다. 성경은 단순한 가보이거나 멋진 장식품 이상의 것입니다. 그 안에는 “영생의 말씀”(요한복음 6:68)이 담겨 있으며, 하나님은 그분의 아들을 통해 그분 자신을 드러내십니다. 요한복음의 첫 장은 예수님을 일컬어 “말씀이 하나님과 함께 계셨고... 하나님이셨다”(1:1)고 기록하고 있습니다. 그분은 “우리 가운데 거하시는”(14절) 분으로 묘사되어 있습니다. 성경은 그리스도의 생애 뿐만 아니라 창조에서부터 최종 구원에 이르기까지 시대를 관통하는 하나님의 모든 활동을 담고 있습니다.

예수님은 이 땅에 계실 때 “영과 생명”(6:63)으로 충만한 말씀을 하셨습니다. 그분이 어려운 가르침을 주셨을 때, 군중들이 불평하고 많은 사람들이 “뒤로 물러가 더 이상 그를 따르지 않게 되었”(66절)지만, 그의 제자들은 주님과 함께 머물기로 했습니다. 제자들은 그 어떤 다른 말도 만족을 줄 수 없다는 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 우리 아빠도 자기 성경책에 대해 똑같이 느꼈습니다. 아빠가 인생에서 많은 산과 골짜기들을 지나는 동안 하나님은 성경의 말씀들을 통해 희망과 방향과 위로와 진리를 제공해 주셨습니다.

THE BIBLE’S CHERISHED WORDS

My dad carried his beloved Bible for more than thirty years before the worn binding finally split in two. When we took it to a book binder for professional restoration, the craftsman was curious about what made the book so special. It wasn’t an expensive antique, and its pages were full of handwritten notes. His questions about the Bible created an opportunity for my family to share the gospel and pray with him.

Yes, the Bible is more than just a family heirloom or a nice decoration. Inside its pages are the “words of eternal life” (JOHN 6:68) as God reveals Himself to us through His Son. The opening chapter of the gospel of John says that Jesus is the “Word [who] was with God, and . . . was God” (1:1). He’s described as making “his dwelling [home] among us” (V. 14). The Bible contains not only the account of the life of Christ, but also all of God’s activity throughout the ages from creation to its eventual redemption.

During His time on earth, Jesus spoke words that were “full of the Spirit and life” (6:63). When He gave a difficult teaching and the crowds grumbled and many “turned back and no longer followed him” (V. 66), His disciples chose to stay. They realized that no other words could satisfy. My dad felt the same way about his Bible. Through many mountains and valleys in his life, God provided hope, direction, comfort, and truth through the words of Scripture. KAREN PIMPO

우리는 하나님의 소유물

상주하면서 어머니를 돌보고 있던 어느 날, 우리는 한 예술 작품 전시회에 가게 되었습니다. 우리는 감정적으로나 육체적으로 지쳐 있었습니다. 나는 일본식 낚시 미끼와 꽃꽂이에서 영감을 얻은 화려한 유리 조각품들로 가득 차 있는 두 나룻배를 바라보았습니다. ‘꽃꽂이와 떠 있는 배’라는 그 작품은 검은 벽 앞의 반사면 위에 전시되어 있었습니다. 그 중 작은 배에는 알록달록하고, 점무늬와 줄무늬가 있는 커다란 유리 구슬들이 쌓여 있었고, 두 번째 배의 선체에는 길게 꼬여 있고 굽어 있는 유리 조각품들이 강렬한 불꽃처럼 솟아 있었습니다. 작가는 유리를 불어서 만드는 정제 과정을 통해 용해된 유리로 각각의 조각품들을 만들어낸 것입니다.

그분의 사랑하는 자녀인 나와 어머니가 힘든 날들을 견디는 동안 하나님의 손이 우리를 붙잡고 있는 모습을 상상하자 눈물이 빰을 타고 흘러내렸습니다. 하나님이 우리 삶에서 정제하는 불을 통해 자기 백성들의 성품을 다듬어 가실 때, 하나님은 우리의 소망이 하나님이 우리를 아시고 또 우리가 하나님께 속해 있다는 것을 알 때 생긴다는 것을 확증해 주십니다(이사야 43:1). 우리에게 닥치는 어려움을 피할 수는 없어도, 하나님은 우리를 보호하시고 함께 하시겠다고 약속하십니다(2절). 하나님의 하나님 됨과 우리를 향한 그분의 사랑이 하나님의 약속을 확고하게 해줍니다(3-4절).

삶이 고난으로 달구어질 때, 우리는 자신이 연약하다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 실제로 연약해 질 수도 있습니다. 하지만 그 용광로가 아무리 뜨겁게 달아올라도 하나님은 우리를 사랑으로 굳건히 붙들고 계십니다. 우리를 알고 계시며 우리를 사랑하고 계십니다. 우리는 하나님의 소유물입니다!

GOD’S OWN

One day, while serving as my mom’s live-in caregiver, we visited an art exhibit. We were emotionally and physically drained. I gazed at two wooden row boats filled with colorful blown-glass shapes inspired by Japanese fishing lures and flower arrangements. The display Ikebana and Float Boats was situated in front of a black wall on a reflective surface. Speckled, spotted, and striped glass orbs, like oversized gumballs, were piled into the smaller boat. From the hull of the second boat, long, twisted, and curved glass sculptures rose like vibrant flames. The artist had shaped each piece of molten glass through the refining fires of the glassblowing process.

Tears streaked my cheeks as I imagined God’s caring hand holding me and my mom—His beloved children—through our hardest days. As God shapes the character of His people through refining fires in life, He affirms that our hope comes from being known and knowing we belong to Him (ISAIAH 43:1). Though we can’t escape hardship, God promises to protect us and be present (V. 2). His identity and His love for us make His promises secure (VV. 3-4).

When life’s circumstances heat up, we may feel fragile. We may even be fragile. But God holds us firmly in love, no matter how blazing hot the furnace gets. We are known. We are loved. We are His! XOCHITL DIXON

예수 안에서의 기쁨

“나에게는 행복할 권리가 있어요.”라고 한 십대 소녀가 의회에서 말했습니다. 그 말은 누구에게나 어디서나 모든 사람을 대변하는 말일 수 있습니다. 우리 보통 인간들이 바라며 울부짖는 말이기 때문입니다. 어떤 자기계발 전문가는 “하나님은 당신이 행복하길 원하신다” 고 말하기도 했습니다.

하지만 정말 그럴까요? 행복을 추구하는 것은 잘못된 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 그 원하는 마음의 상태는 순간 순간의 상황에 따라 변하며, 한 사람의 욕망을 충족시키는 것이 다른 사람의 행복을 파괴하는 것일 수도 있습니다.

예수님은 우리에게 더 나은 모습을 보여주십니다. 예수님은 자신이 세상의 죄를 짊어지고 로마의 십자가에 곧 못박히게 될 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 그러나 예수님의 관심은 제자들에게 있었습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희는 곡하고 애통하겠으나 세상은 기뻐하리라.” 또한 “너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라”(요한복음 16:20)고 말씀하시면서 심지어 “너희 기쁨을 빼앗을 자가 없으리라”(22절)고 약속하셨습니다.

이런 종류의 기쁨은 우리가 바라는 좋은 일이 일어났을 때 느끼는 좋은 감정 그 이상의 것입니다. 그런 기쁨은 우리가 하늘에 계신 아버지의 뜻을 행할 때 생깁니다. 예수님은 또한 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더 하시리라”(마태복음 6:33).

행복은 불쾌한 상황이 닥치면 금새 사라질 수 있습니다. 그러나 예수님을 따름으로써 오는 기쁨은 그러한 상황에서도 건재할 것입니다.

JOY IN JESUS

“I have the right to be happy,” said a teenager as she spoke before a legislature. Yet she could have been anyone, anywhere, speaking for everybody. It’s our human cry. One self-help guru even said, “God wants you to be happy.”

Is that true? It’s not wrong to pursue happiness. That desirable state of mind, however, ebbs and flows with our moment-bymoment circumstances, and the fulfillment of one person’s desires can crush the happiness of another.

Jesus points us to something better. He knew He was about to be nailed to a Roman cross where He would bear the weight of the world’s sin. Yet His concern was for His disciples. He told them, “You will weep and mourn while the world rejoices.” But He also said, “Your grief will turn to joy” (JOHN 16:20). Then He promised, “No one will take away your joy” (V. 22).

This kind of joy is more than a good feeling based on desirable things happening to us. It grows out of doing the will of our Father in heaven. Jesus also said, “Seek first [God’s] kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (MATTHEW 6:33).

Happiness can slip away with the next unpleasant circumstance. The joy that comes from following Jesus can thrive despite those circumstances. TIM GUSTAFSON

성령께서 주신 옷을 입다

미국의 시골 지역인 메인 주에 사는 여덟 살 난 남자 아이 둘이서 수요일 마다 정장을 입고 학교에 가는 것으로 유명해졌습니다. 이들로 인해 “멋쟁이 수요일”이 학교에서 가장 좋아하는 날이 되었고, 다른 학우들과 교직원들도 매주 수요일에 정장 차림으로 함께 했습니다. 이 아이디어를 낸 제임스는 칭찬을 들을 때 매우 기뻤다고 합니다. “그 이야기를 들을 때마다 저는 무척 기뻤어요.” 그들의 수요일 복장은 그들을 자랑스러운 학교 학생들로 돋보이게 했습니다.

이스라엘 백성이 이방에 사로잡혀 갔을 때 그들의 옷은, 영적인 면과 물질적인 면에서 모두 낡고 해어졌습니다. 이사야는 그들에게 하나님의 영이 “그 재를 대신하여 기쁨의 기름으로 그 슬픔을 대신하며 찬송의 옷으로 그 근심을 대신할” 것이라는 희망찬 약속을 합니다(3절).

그 약속은 오늘 이 시간에도 하나님의 백성에게 유효합니다. 예수님은 성령으로 말미암아 우리가 “위로부터 능력으로 입혀질” 것이라고 말씀 하셨습니다(누가복음 24:49). 그리스도께서는 우리에게 “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음”의 옷을 입히십니다(골로새서 3:12). 주님이 주신 옷을 입고, 우리는 세상에 그리스도의 사랑을 나타냅니다.

DRESSED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Two eight-year-old boys in Maine—a rural American state— made their mark by wearing business suits to school on Wednesdays. Soon “Dapper Wednesdays” became a favorite day, as other classmates and school staff dressed up too. James, who launched the idea, loved hearing compliments. “It just made my heart feel really good.” Their Wednesday attire set the kids apart as proud students of their school.

Our spiritual clothing, which sets us apart as God’s own, gladdens our hearts too. “My soul rejoices in my God,” said Isaiah, “for he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels” (ISAIAH 61:10).

As the Israelites went into exile, their clothing—spiritual and material—was threadbare and worn. Isaiah offered them a hopeful promise: God’s Spirit would “bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (V. 3).

The same promise rests on God’s people today. Jesus said that by His Spirit we would be “clothed with power from on high” (LUKE 24:49). Christ provides us with a wardrobe of “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (COLOSSIANS 3:12). Clothed by Him, we reflect His love to the world. PATRICIA RAYBON

하나님이 주신 기술과 재능

반 클라이번과 블라디미르 호로비츠를 포함한 세계에서 가장 유명한 피아니스트들은 뉴욕에 있는 스타인웨이 피아노 회사의 수석 콘서트 기술자인 프란츠 모어에게 콘서트에서 그들이 연주할 피아노를 준비하는 일을 맡깁니다. 피아노 조율의 대가인 모어는 피아노에 대한 복잡한 지식과 수십 년에 걸쳐 연마한 뛰어난 기술로 많은 사람의 주목을 받았습니다. 모어는 자신의 기술이 하나님을 섬기는 길이라고 믿었고, 피아니스트들과 공연 스태프에게 일상적으로 자신의 믿음을 전했습니다.

GOD-GIVEN SKILLS AND TALENTS

Some of the most famous pianists in the world, including Van Cliburn and Vladimir Horowitz, relied on Franz Mohr, chief concert technician at Steinway & Sons in New York, to ensure that their concert pianos were ready for performances. A master piano tuner, Mohr was sought after for his intricate knowledge of pianos and great skill developed over decades. Mohr believed his skills were an avenue to serve God, and he regularly shared his faith with pianists and performance staff.

When the nation of Israel was preparing to build the tent of meeting and other items necessary for worship, they needed individuals with expert skills (EXODUS 31:7-11). God appointed two skilled artisans, Bezalel and Oholiab, to do the work and filled them with the “Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—to make artistic designs” (VV. 3-4). In addition to their specialized skills, God empowered them with His Spirit to guide their work. Their willingness to use their unique talents in service to God allowed the Israelites to appropriately worship Him.

Whether or not we consider ourselves artistic, each of us has unique, God-given gifts that we can use to serve others (ROMANS 12:6). Empowered by the Spirit, we can serve and worship God through our work using the wisdom, understanding, and skills He’s given us. LISA M. SAMRA

주님 안에서 평화

공중 줄타기 곡예사 필리프 쁘띠는 1971년에 파리에 있는 노틀담 대성당의 탑 사이에서 줄타기 걷기를 선보이며 유명해졌습니다. 3년 후 그는 한 때 뉴욕의 스카이라인을 장식했던 쌍둥이 빌딩 사이를 허가없이 줄타기한 혐의로 체포된 일도 있었습니다. 그러나 1987년 보여준 쁘띠의 줄타기는 특별했습니다. 예루살렘 시장 테디 콜렉의 초청으로 쁘띠는 그 해 이스라엘 축제 중 하나로 공중 줄타기 공연으로 힌놈의 골짜기 위를 걸었습니다. 이 곡예사는 중간 지점에서 평화의 아름다움을 상징하는 회색 비둘기(흰 비둘기였으면 좋았겠지만) 한 마리를 날려 보냈습니다. 기이하고 위험한 묘기였지만, 모든 것이 평화를 위한 공연이었습니다. 쁘띠는 나중에 이런 말을 했습니다. “잠시였지만 군중 전체가 서로의 차이를 잊었습니다.”

쁘띠의 공중 줄타기를 보면서 또 다른 숨 멎는 순간을 떠올립니다. 바로 예수님의 몸이 하늘과 땅 사이에 매달려 있던 그 때 말입니다. 바울 사도는 “아버지께서는 모든 충만으로 예수 안에 거하게 하시고 그의 십자가의 피로 화평을 이루사 만물 곧 땅에 있는 것들이나 하늘에 있는 것들이 그로 말미암아 자기와 화목하게 되기를 기뻐하심이라”(골로새서 1:19-20)고 말합니다. 바울은 “멀리 떠나 마음으로 원수가 되었던 너희를”(21절)이라고 썼지만, 더 이상은 그렇지 않다고 말합니다. 평화의 메시지를 담은 구경거리와는 차원이 다르게, 메시아 예수께서는 십자가에서 피 흘리사 실제로 평화를 ‘이루셨’습니다. 그분의 업적은 결코 능가할 수 없는 위업이며, 능가할 필요도 없습니다. 그분이 이루신 평화는 영원하기 때문입니다.

MAKING PEACE IN JESUS

High-wire artist Philippe Petit became famous in 1971 when he walked a tightrope between the towers of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Three years later, he got arrested for an unauthorized walk between the Twin Towers that once distinguished New York’s skyline. But in 1987, Petit’s walk looked different. At the invitation of Jerusalem mayor Teddy Kollek, Petit walked across the Hinnom Valley on a high wire as a part of that year’s Israel Festival. At the midway point, Petit released a pigeon (he’d hoped for a dove) to symbolize the beauty of peace. A strange and dangerous stunt, but all for the cause of peace. Petit later said, “For a moment, the entire crowd had forgotten their differences.”

Petit’s high-wire walk reminds me of another breathtaking moment—the one that occurred when Jesus’ body hung between heaven and earth. The apostle Paul tells us, “God was pleased . . . to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through [Christ’s] blood, shed on the cross” (COLOSSIANS 1:19-20). Paul writes that “once [we] were alienated from God” (V. 21), but no longer. Far from a spectacle to promote peace, Jesus the Messiah actually made peace by shedding His blood on the cross. His was a feat never to be surpassed, as there is no need. His peace is everlasting. JOHN BLASE
