치유의 말

최근 연구에 따르면 의료진의 격려의 말은 환자가 질병에서 더 빨리 회복할 수 있게 한다고 합니다. 연구에 참여한 지원자들에게 가려움을 느끼도록 피부 알레르기 항원에 노출시킨 후 의사로부터 치료될 거라는 장담을 받은 사람들과 그렇지 않은 사람들 사이의 반응을 비교해 보는 간단한 실험을 해보았더니, 의사로부터 격려를 받은 환자들은 그렇지 않은 환자들에 비해 불편함과 가려움이 덜했다고 합니다.

잠언서의 저자는 격려의 말이 얼마나 중요한지를 알고 있었습니다. 그는 “선한 말은......뼈에 양약이 되느니라”(잠언 16:24)고 썼습니다. 말의 긍정적인 효과는 우리의 건강에만 국한되지 않습니다. 우리가 지혜의 가르침에 주의를 기울이면, 우리가 노력할 때 번성할 가능성도 더욱 높아집니다(20절). 또한 격려는 현재 직면하고 있거나 미래에 마주하게 될지도 모를 도전들을 해결해 주기도 합니다.

우리는 왜, 혹은 얼마나 많은 지혜와 격려가 우리 일상 생활에 힘과 치유를 가져오는지 잘 모를 수도 있습니다. 그러나 부모님이나 코치, 동료들의 환호와 지도를 통해 우리는 어려움을 견뎌내고 성공을 향해 나아갈 수 있는 도움을 얻습니다. 마찬가지로 성경은 우리가 시련을 만날 때 격려해 주며, 상상도 못할 상황에서도 견디도록 준비시켜 줍니다. 하나님, 하나님의 지혜로 우리를 강건하게 하시고, 우리의 삶에 두신 사람들에게 “선한 말”로 치유와 소망을 전할 수 있게 하소서.

HEALING WORDS

A recent study has shown that encouraging words from a health-care provider can help patients recuperate faster from their ailments. A simple experiment exposed volunteer study participants to a skin allergen to make them itch and then compared the reactions between those who received assurance from their physician and those who didn’t. Patients who received encouragement from their doctors had less discomfort and itching than their counterparts.

The writer of Proverbs knew how important encouraging words are. “Gracious words” bring “healing to the bones,” he wrote (PROVERBS 16:24). The positive effect of words isn’t limited to our health: when we heed the wisdom of instruction, we’re also more likely to prosper in our efforts (V. 20). So too encouragement buoys us for the challenges we face now and may encounter in the future.

We may not yet fully understand why or even how much wisdom and encouragement bring strength and healing to our daily lives. Yet the cheers and guidance of our parents, coaches, and colleagues seem to help us endure difficulty and steer us toward success. Similarly, the Bible brings us encouragement when we face trials, equipping us to bear up under even the most unthinkable circumstances. Help us, God, to be strengthened by Your wisdom and to, in turn, offer the healing and hope of “gracious words” to those You’ve placed in our lives. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

하나님을 추구함

꿈을 이루기 위한 사람들의 열정과 헌신을 볼 때면 감동이 됩니다. 최근에 내가 아는 어느 젊은 여성은 혼신의 노력 끝에 3년 만에 대학을 졸업했습니다. 어떤 친구는 특별한 자동차를 원하여 그 목표를 이룰 때까지 케이크를 굽고 팔았습니다. 영업사원인 어떤 사람은 매주 100명의 새로운 사람들을 만나기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

세상적으로 가치가 있는 것을 열심히 추구하는 것이 좋을 수도 있지만, 우리가 추구해야 할 더 중요한 것이 있음을 생각해야 합니다.

다윗 왕은 사막에서 고군분투하며 절망 중에 이렇게 기록하였습니다. “하나님, 주님은 나의 하나님입니다. 내가 주님을 애타게 찾습니다”(시편 63:1, 새번역). 다윗이 하나님께 부르짖자 하나님은 지친 왕에게 가까이 다가오셨습니다. 하나님을 향한 다윗의 깊은 영적 갈증은 그분이 함께 하심으로써만 충족될 수 있었습니다.

다윗 왕은 “성소”에서 하나님을 만나(2절) 생명보다 나은 하나님의 사랑을 경험하며(3절) 매일매일 주를 송축하며 좋은 것으로 배불리 먹는 것 같은 진정한 만족을 그분 안에서 찾았던 것을(4-5절) 기억했습니다. 밤에도 그는 하나님의 위대하심을 깊이 생각하며 하나님의 도우심과 보호하심을 깨달았습니다 (6-7절).

오늘날 성령님은 우리에게 하나님을 전심으로 찾으라고 권하십니다. 하나님께 매달릴 때 하나님은 권능과 사랑으로 우리를 그분의 강한 오른손으로 붙들어 주십니다. 성령님의 인도로 모든 좋은 것을 창조하신 그분께 가까이 나아갈 수 있게 되기를 소원합니다.

SEEKING GOD

It’s inspiring to watch people’s passion and dedication in pursuing their dreams. A young woman I know recently graduated from college in just three years—a task that took total commitment. A friend wanted a particular car, so he worked diligently baking and selling cakes until he reached his goal. Another person who’s in sales seeks to meet one hundred new people every week.

While it can be good to earnestly seek something of earthly value, there’s a more important kind of seeking that we must consider.

In desperation, struggling in a desert, King David wrote, “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you” (PSALM 63:1). As David cried out to Him, God drew close to the weary king. David’s deep spiritual thirst for God could only be satisfied in His presence.

The king remembered meeting with God in His “sanctuary” (V. 2), experiencing His all-conquering love (V. 3), and praising Him day after day—finding true satisfaction in Him that’s not unlike enjoying a full and satisfying meal (VV. 4–5). Even during the night he contemplated God’s greatness, recognizing His help and protection (VV. 6–7).

Today the Holy Spirit convicts us to earnestly seek after God. As we cling to Him, in power and love God holds us up with His strong right hand. By the leading of the Spirit, may we draw close to the Maker of all good things. DAVE BRANON

슬픔이 변하여

늑대에 관해 지식이 많은 감독 짐 더쳐와 제이미 더쳐에 따르면 늑대들은 기쁠 때에는 꼬리를 흔들며 뛰어논다고 합니다. 그러다가 무리 중 하나가 죽으면 몇 주 동안 슬퍼하는데, 동료가 죽은 곳을 찾아와 꼬리를 늘어뜨리고 슬피 울며 애도를 표한다고 합니다.

애통하는 것은 특히 사랑하는 사람의 죽음이나 소중한 희망이 사라질 때 우리 모두가 경험하는 강한 감정입니다. 막달라 마리아도 그런 슬픔을 겪었습니다. 그녀는 주님을 따르는 무리에 속해 있었고 예수님과 그의 제자 들과 더불어 돌아다녔습니다(누가복음 8:1-3). 그러나 십자가 위에서의 주님의 처절한 죽음은 이제 그들을 산산히 흩어놓았습니다. 마리아가 할 수 있는 것은 안식일 때문에 하지 못했던, 장례를 위해 주님의 몸에 향료를 바르는 것뿐이었습니다. 그러나 마리아가 무덤에 도착하여 생명이 없는 상한 몸이 아니라 살아 계신 구주를 보았을 때 그 느낌이 어떠했을지 상상해 보십시오! 마리아는 처음에 자기 앞에 서 있는 사람을 알아보지 못했지만, 그분이 자기 이름을 부르는 음성을 듣고 그분이 바로 예수님이라는 것을 알았습니다. 그 순간 슬픔은 기쁨으로 변했습니다. 마리아는 이제 “내가 주님을 보았어요!” (요한복음 20:18, 현대인의 성경) 라고 기쁜 소식을 전할 수 있었습니다.

예수님은 어두운 이 세상에 자유와 생명을 전하려고 오셨습니다. 주님의 부활은 그가 시작한 일을 마침내 성취하셨다는 사실을 기리는 의미가 있습니다. 우리도 마리아처럼 주님의 부활을 기뻐하며 주님이 살아 계시다는 복된 소식을 전할 수 있습니다! 할렐루야!

GRIEF OVERTURNED

According to Jim and Jamie Dutcher, filmmakers known for their knowledge of wolves, when happy, wolves wag their tails and romp about. But after the death of a pack member, they grieve for weeks. They visit the place where the pack member died, showing grief by their drooping tails and mournful howls.

Grief is a powerful emotion that we’ve all experienced, particularly at the death of a loved one or a treasured hope. Mary Magdalene experienced it. She had belonged to Christ’s supporters and traveled with Him and His disciples (LUKE 8:1–3). But His cruel death on a cross separated them now. The only thing left for Mary to do for Jesus was to finish anointing His body for burial—a task the Sabbath had interrupted. But imagine how Mary felt upon arriving at the tomb and finding not a lifeless, broken body but a living Savior! Though she hadn’t at first recognized the man standing before her, the sound of her name spoken by Him told her who He was—Jesus! Instantly, grief turned to joy. Mary now had joyful news to share: “I have seen the Lord!” (JOHN 20:18).

Jesus entered our dark world to bring freedom and life. His resurrection is a celebration of the fact that He accomplished what He set out to do. Like Mary, we can celebrate Christ’s resurrection and share the good news that He’s alive! Alleluia! LINDA WASHINGTON

비행기가 순항속도에 이르러 승무원이 일등석을 막았던 커튼을 젖혔을 때 나는 비행기 안에 서로 크게 다른 구역이 있다는 것을 다시금 분명히 깨닫게 되었습니다. 어떤 승객들은 비행기에 먼저 탑승하고 일등석에서 다리를 뻗고 앉아 자기가 원하는 서비스를 제공받습니다. 그 커튼을 보며 나는 그 같은 특별한 혜택에 해당되지 않는다는 것을 새삼 깨달았습니다.

사람들을 부류에 따라 배타적으로 구분하는 것은 역사에서도 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 더 많은 돈을 지불할 수 있는 능력 때문은 아니었지만 예루살렘에 있는 하나님의 성전에서도 그런 일이 있었습니다. 유대인이 아닌 사람들은 성전 바깥에서만 예배를 드릴 수 있었고, 그 안쪽으로는 여자들에게, 그리고 좀더 안쪽은 남자들에게 허용되었습니다. 하나님이 유일하게 자신을 드러내시는 지성소는 휘장이 쳐져 있고 오직 성별된 제사장 한 사람만이 일년에 한번 들어갈 수 있었습니다(히브리서 9:1-10).

그러나 놀랍게도 이런 구분은 이제 더 이상 존재하지 않습니다. 누구든지 하나님께 가까이 나아가려 할 때 그것을 가로막는 어떤 장벽도, 심지어 우리의 죄마저도 예수님께서 완전히 제거해 주셨습니다(10:17). 그리스도께서 돌아가신 그 순간 성소의 휘장이 둘로 갈라진 것처럼(마태복음 27:50-51), 십자가에 못 박히신 주님의 몸이 하나님께로 나아가는 것을 가로막는 모든 장애물을 찢어버리셨습니다. 성도들이 살아 계신 하나님의 영광과 사랑을 체험하지 못하도록 하는 그 어떤 장벽도 이제는 존재하지 않습니다.

CURTAINED OFF

As my flight reached cruising speed, the flight attendant pulled back the curtain that cordoned off first class, and I was given a startling reminder of the stark differences between areas on airplanes. Some travelers get to board first, enjoying premium seating with extra legroom and personalized service. The curtain was a humbling reminder of my separation from those perks.

Exclusionary distinctions between groups of people can be found throughout history, including, in a way, even God’s temple in Jerusalem, though not due to one’s ability to pay more. Non-Jewish people were only allowed to worship in the outer court. Next came the women’s court, and even closer, an area designated for men. Finally, the holy of holies, seen as the place where God uniquely revealed Himself, was concealed behind a curtain and only accessible to one consecrated priest each year (HEBREWS 9:1– 10).

But, wonderfully, this separation no longer exists. Jesus has completely eliminated any barriers that might hinder anyone seeking access to God—even our sin (10:17). Just as the temple curtain was torn in two at the moment of Christ’s death (MATTHEW 27:50–51), His crucified body has torn away all obstructions to God’s presence. There’s no barrier that need separate any believer from experiencing the glory and love of the living God. LISA M. SAMRA

굳게 서기

아드리안과 그의 가족은 그들의 나라에서 예수님을 믿는 믿음 때문에 박해를 당하고 있습니다. 하지만 그들은 그 같은 상황에서도 그리스도의 사랑을 증거합니다. 그는 예전에 테러범들이 교회를 훈련장으로 쓰던 시절에 생긴 총탄 자국이 선명한 교회 마당에 서서, “성 금요일인 오늘, 예수님께서 우리를 위해 십자가에서 당하신 고난을 기억합니다.”라고 말합니다. 또 그는 그곳의 성도들은 고난이 무엇인지 잘 알고 있다고 말합니다. 그런데도 아드리안의 가족은 이렇게 말하며 그곳에 계속 머무르기로 선택합니다. “우리는 여전히 이곳에 굳게 서있을 것입니다.”

그곳의 성도들은 예수님께서 십자가에 달리신 것을 지켜본 여인들의 본을 그대로 따르고 있습니다(마가복음 15:40). 막달라 마리아와 야곱과 요셉의 어머니 마리아, 그리고 살로메를 포함한 그 여인들은 반역자로 낙인찍힌 사람의 친구나 가족들은 조롱과 처벌을 받을 위험이 있음에도 불구하고 용감하게 그 자리에 남아 있었습니다. 그들은 예수님과 함께 있는 것으로 그분을 향한 사랑을 보여주었습니다. 예수님이 갈릴리에 계실 때 그를 “따르며 섬기던” (41절) 그들은 예수님이 가장 어려운 시간을 보내고 계실 때에도 주님과 함께 서 있었습니다.

우리의 가장 큰 선물인 구주께서 십자가에 달려 돌아가신 것을 기념하는 오늘, 우리가 온갖 종류의 시련을 당할 때 어떻게 예수님의 편에 설 수 있을지 잠시 시간을 내어 묵상해 보십시오(야고보서 1:2-4 참조). 그리고 세상 곳곳에서 믿음 때문에 박해를 당하는 성도들도 생각해 보십시오. 아드리안이 요청한 것처럼 “기도로 우리와 함께 서 있어 주지 않으시겠습니까?”

STANDING FIRM

In the country where they live, Adrian and his family suffer persecution for their faith in Jesus. Yet, through it all, they demonstrate Christ’s love. Standing in his church courtyard, which was pummeled by bullets when terrorists used it as training ground, he said, “Today is Good Friday. We remember that Jesus suffered for us on the cross.” And suffering, he continued, is something that believers there understand. But his family chooses to remain: “We’re still here, still standing.”

These believers follow the example of the women who stood watching as Jesus died on the cross (MARK 15:40). They—including Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and Salome—were brave to remain, for friends and family members of an enemy of the state could be ridiculed and punished. Yet the women showed their love for Jesus by their very presence with Him. Even as they “followed him and cared for his needs” in Galilee (V. 41), they stood with Him at His hour of deepest need.

On this day when we remember the greatest gift of our Savior, His death on a cross, take a moment to consider how we can stand for Jesus as we face trials of many kinds (SEE JAMES 1:2–4). Think too about fellow believers around the world who suffer for their faith. As Adrian asked, “Can you please stand with us in your prayers?” AMY BOUCHER PYE

그 길에 머물러 있으라

내가 리 바오를 따라 중국 중부지방 산맥을 깎아 만든 계단식 성벽 정상을 따라 걸어가고 있을 때 땅거미가 지고 있었습니다. 초행길인데다 한 치 앞도 보이지 않았고, 왼편으로 경사는 가늠할 수 없을 만큼 가파랐습니다. 침을 꿀꺽 삼키며 나는 리 바오 옆에 바짝 붙었습니다. 우리가 어디를 가고 있는지, 얼마나 걸릴지 알 수 없었습니다. 하지만 나는 내 친구를 믿었습니다.

당시 나의 상황은 매번 확신이 필요했던 제자 도마와 같은 상황이었습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 그들의 거처를 예비하기 위해 떠나야 한다고 말씀하시면서, “자신이 어디로 가는지 그 길을” 제자들이 알고 있다고 하셨습니다(요한복음 14:4). 그 말을 들은 도마는 아주 합리적인 후속 질문을 던집니다. “주여 주께서 어디로 가시는지 우리가 알지 못하거늘 그 길을 어찌 알겠사옵나이까”(5절).

예수님은 제자들을 어디로 데려가시겠다는 설명으로 도마의 의문을 해결해주지 않으시고, 그저 주님 자신이 그곳으로 가는 길이라고 도마에게 확인해 주셨습니다. 그런데 그것으로 충분했습니다.

우리 역시 미래에 대한 의문들이 있습니다. 그 누구도 다가올 일을 알 수 없으며, 삶은 우리가 예측 못하는 우여곡절로 가득합니다. 하지만 괜찮습니다. “길이요 진리요 생명”(6절) 되시는 예수님을 아는 것만으로 충분합니다.

예수님은 우리의 앞날을 아십니다. 주님이 우리에게 원하시는 것은 우리가 주님과 가까이 동행하는 것뿐입니다.

STAY ON THE WAY

Dusk fell as I followed Li Bao along the tops of terraced walls cut into the mountains of central China. I had never been this way before, and I couldn’t see more than one step ahead or how steep the ground dropped off to our left. I gulped and stuck close to Li. I didn’t know where we were going or how long it would take, but I trusted my friend.

I was in the same position as Thomas, the disciple who always seemed to need reassurance. Jesus told His disciples that He must leave to prepare a place for them and that they knew “the way to the place where [He was] going” (JOHN 14:4). Thomas asked a logical follow-up question: “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (V. 5).

Jesus didn’t quench Thomas’s doubt by explaining where He was taking them. He simply assured His disciple that He was the way there. And that was enough.

We too have questions about our future. None of us know the details of what lies ahead. Life is full of twists we don’t see coming. That’s okay. It’s enough to know Jesus, who is “the way and the truth and the life” (V. 6). Jesus knows what’s next. He only asks that we walk close to Him. MIKE WITTMER

더 소중한 하나님

과거에 예수 믿는 사람들에게 상처를 받은 어머니는 내 삶을 주님께 드리기로 했을 때 크게 화를 내셨습니다. “그래서, 네가 이제 나를 심판하겠다는 거냐? 어림없는 짓 마라.” 어머니는 그렇게 전화를 끊으셨고 그 해 내내 나와 말하기를 거부하셨습니다. 나는 너무나 마음이 아팠지만 하나님과의 관계가 나의 여러 귀한 관계보다 더 중요하다는 것을 차차 알게 되었습니다. 나는 어머니가 내 전화를 받지 않으실 때마다 어머니를 위해 기도했고 어머니를 더욱 사랑할 수 있도록 하나님께 간구했습니다.

마침내 우리는 화해했습니다. 몇 달 후 어머니는 나에게 “네가 정말 변했구나. 이제 나도 예수님에 대해 들을 준비가 된 것 같다.”라고 하셨습니다. 곧 어머니는 그리스도를 영접했고 여생을 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하며 사셨습니다.

예수님께 달려가서 무엇을 해야 영생을 얻을 수 있는지 물었지만 자신의 재산을 포기하지 못해서 슬퍼하며 그 자리를 떠났던 사람처럼(마가복음 10:17- 22), 나도 그분을 따르기 위해 모든 것을 포기해야 하나 하는 생각에 많이 힘들었습니다.

하나님보다 더 의지할 수 있다고 생각하는 물질이나 사람들을 포기 하기란 쉽지 않습니다(23-25절). 그러나 우리가 이 세상에서 아무리 값진 것을 포기하거나 잃는다 해도 예수님과 함께하는 영생이라는 선물보다 값질 수는 없습니다. 우리 사랑의 하나님은 온 인류를 구원하시려고 기꺼이 자신을 희생하셨습니다. 그분은 우리를 평안으로 감싸 안으시고 측량할 수 없는 영원한 사랑으로 우리 마음에 찾아오십니다.

GOD IS WORTH MORE

Having been hurt by believers in Jesus in the past, my mom responded in anger when I dedicated my life to Him. “So, now you’re going to judge me? I don’t think so.” She hung up the phone and refused to talk to me for a whole year. I grieved, but eventually realized a relationship with God was even more important than one of my most valued relationships. I prayed for her every time she refused my calls and asked God to help me love her well.

Finally, we reconciled. A few months later, she said, “You’ve changed. I think I’m ready to hear more about Jesus.” Soon after, she accepted Christ and lived the rest of her days loving God and others.

Like the man who ran up to Jesus asking how he could inherit eternal life but left in sorrow because he didn’t want to part with his wealth (MARK 10:17–22), I struggled with the thought of giving up everything to follow Him.

It’s not easy surrendering the things or people we think we can count on more than God (VV. 23–25). But the value of what we give up or lose in this world will never exceed the gift of eternal life with Jesus. Our loving God willingly sacrificed Himself to save all people. He wraps us in peace and woos us with priceless and persistent love. XOCHITL DIXON

완전히 드러내심

영화 팬들은 ‘메리 포핀스 리턴즈’에서 주인공 역을 맡은 에밀리 블런트의 아름다운 목소리를 들었습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 에밀리의 남편은 결혼 4년째가 되어서야 그녀의 노래 실력을 처음 알게 되었다고 합니다. 남편은 아내의 노래를 처음 듣고는 깜짝 놀라, “도대체 내게 언제 말하려고 했지?”라고 생각했다고 한 인터뷰에서 털어놓았습니다.

우리는 종종 주변 사람들에게서 전에는 몰랐던, 때론 아주 뜻밖의 모습을 발견하고 놀라곤 합니다. 마가복음 속의 제자들도 처음에는 예수님을 단편적으로만 알았고 주님이 누구신지 온전히 알려고 애썼습니다. 그러나 그들이 갈릴리 바다에서 예수님을 만났을 때 주님은 자연을 다스리는 능력을 보이시면서 자신을 더 많이 드러내셨습니다.

예수님께서 오천 명이 넘는 군중을 먹이신 후 제자들을 갈릴리 바다로 보내셨을 때 제자들은 거기서 폭풍우를 만났습니다. 동이 틀 무렵 제자들은 누군가가 물 위로 걸어오는 것을 보고 몹시 두려워했습니다. 그러자 그리스도께서 친숙한 목소리로 “안심하라 내니 두려워하지 말라”(마가복음 6:50) 고 하시며 그들을 안심시키셨습니다. 그러고는 성난 바다를 잠잠케 하셨습니다. 그같은 엄청난 능력을 본 제자들은 “마음에 심히 놀라며”(6:51) 자신들이 경험한 예수님의 능력을 온전히 이해해 보려고 애를 썼습니다.

우리 삶의 폭풍우를 제어하는 예수님과 그분의 능력을 경험하게 될 때, 우리도 그분이 누구신지 더 철저히 알게 되면서 놀라움을 금치 못하게 됩니다.

THE FULL REVEAL

Moviegoers heard the beautiful voice of Emily Blunt as the starring role in Mary Poppins Returns. Amazingly, it was four years into their marriage before her husband discovered her vocal talent. In an interview, he revealed his surprise the first time he heard her sing, thinking, “When were you going to tell me this?”

In relationships we often learn new, sometimes unexpected, details that surprise us. In Mark’s gospel, Christ’s disciples initially started with an incomplete picture of Jesus and struggled to grasp all of who He is. In an encounter on the Sea of Galilee, however, Jesus revealed more of Himself—this time the extent of His power over the forces of nature.

After feeding a crowd numbering more than 5,000 people, Jesus sent His disciples out on the Sea of Galilee, where they were caught in a fierce storm. Just before dawn, the disciples were terrified to see someone walking on the water. Christ’s familiar voice spoke words of comfort, saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (MARK 6:50). Then He calmed the raging sea. Upon seeing such great power, the disciples were “completely amazed” (6:51) even as they struggled to fully comprehend this experience of Christ’s power.

As we experience Jesus and His power over the storms of our lives, we gain a more complete picture of who He is. And we’re amazed. LISA M. SAMRA

고난 중의 힘

1948년 지하 교회의 목사였던 할란 포포프는 “간단한 심문”을 받는다는 구실로 집에서 끌려갔습니다. 2주 후 그는 열흘에 걸쳐 24시간 내내 심문을 받았고 아무것도 먹지 못했습니다. 자신이 간첩이 아니라고 할 때마다 매질을 당했습니다. 포포프는 이런 혹독한 심문을 당하면서도 동료 죄수들을 예수님께 인도하였습니다. 11년이 지나 그는 결국 풀려났습니다. 그리고 계속 그의 믿음을 전하다가 2년 후 그 나라를 떠나 가족과 재회할 수 있었습니다. 그는 그 후 여러 해 동안 계속해서 복음을 전하면서 기금을 모아 폐쇄된 국가들에 성경을 보급했습니다.

여러 시대에 걸쳐 예수님을 믿었던 수많은 사람들처럼 포포프도 그의 믿음 때문에 박해를 받았습니다. 그리스도는 자신의 고문과 죽음, 이후에 있을 제자들의 박해 훨씬 전에 “의를 위하여 박해를 받은 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이라”(마태복음 5:10)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 이어서 “나로 말미암아 너희를 욕하고 박해하고 거짓으로 너희를 거슬러 모든 악한 말을 할 때에는 너희에게 복이 있다”(11절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

“복이 있다”고요? 예수님은 무슨 말씀을 하시려 했던 걸까요? 예수님은 그분과의 관계에서 얻을 수 있는 온전함과 기쁨과 위안을 말씀하신 것입니다 (4, 8-10절). 포포프는 고통 속에서도 자신에게 힘을 불어넣어 주는 하나님의 임재를 느꼈기 때문에 고통을 견딜 수 있었습니다. 우리도 하나님과 동행하면 어떤 상황에서도 그분의 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리와 함께 계십니다.

STRENGTH IN SUFFERING

In 1948, Harlan Popov, the pastor of an underground church, was taken from his home for a “little questioning.” Two weeks later, he received around-the-clock interrogation and no food for ten days. Each time he denied being a spy, he was beaten. Popov not only survived his harsh treatment but also led fellow prisoners to Jesus. Finally, eleven years later, he was released and continued to share his faith until, two years later, he was able to leave the country and be reunited with his family. He spent the following years preaching and raising money to distribute Bibles in closed countries.

Like countless believers in Jesus throughout the ages, Popov was persecuted because of his faith. Christ, long before His own torture and death and the subsequent persecution of His followers, said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (MATTHEW 5:10). He continued, “Blessed are you when people . . . persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me” (V. 11).

“Blessed”? What could Jesus have meant? He was referring to the wholeness, joy, and comfort found in a relationship with Him (VV. 4, 8–10). Popov persevered because he felt the presence of God infusing strength into him, even in suffering. When we walk with God, no matter our circumstances, we too can experience His peace. He is with us. 구원하시는 분

“현존하는 가장 용감한 사람”이라고 불렸던 데스몬드는 사실 사람들이 짐작하는 그런 사람은 아니었습니다. 그는 총기 소지를 거부한 군인이었습니다. 위생병이었던 그는 한 전투에서 혼자 75명의 부상병을 구해냈습니다. 그가 구조한 사람 중에는 그를 겁쟁이라고 부르고 그의 신앙을 비웃던 사람들도 있었습니다. 데스몬드는 쏟아지는 총탄 속을 넘나들면서 “주님, 한 명이라도 더 구하게 해주세요.”라고 계속 기도했습니다. 그는 영웅으로 추대되어 명예 훈장을 받았습니다.

성경은 예수님도 많은 오해를 받았다고 말합니다. 스가랴 선지자가 예언했던 그 날에(9:9) 예수님은 나귀를 타고 예루살렘에 입성하셨고, 군중은 “호산나!”(“구원하소서!”라는 뜻의 외침)를 외치며 나뭇가지를 흔들었습니다. 그들은 시편 118편 26절 말씀을 인용하여 “찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이여”(요한복음 12:13)라고 외쳤습니다. 그러나 시편의 바로 다음 구절은 “손에 나뭇가지를 들고” ‘희생 제물을 가져오는 것’을 가리키고 있습니다(시편 118:27). 요한복음 12장의 군중들은 그들을 로마로부터 구원할 이 땅의 왕을 기대했지만 예수님은 그보다 더 높으신 분이셨습니다. 그분은 만왕의 왕이셨고, 오래 전에 예언된 분, 곧 인간의 몸을 입으신 하나님으로서 우리를 죄에서 구원하시기 위해 기꺼이 십자가를 지신 ‘희생제물’이셨습니다.

THE ONE WHO SAVES

He was called “one of the bravest persons alive,” but he wasn’t what others expected. Desmond was a soldier who declined to carry a gun. As a medic, he single-handedly rescued seventy-five injured soldiers from harm in one battle, including some who once called him a coward and ridiculed him for his faith. Running into heavy gunfire, Desmond prayed continually, “Lord, please help me get one more.” He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism.

Scripture tells us that Jesus was greatly misunderstood. On a day foretold by the prophet Zechariah (9:9), Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey and the crowd waved branches, shouting “Hosanna!” (an exclamation of praise meaning “Save!”). Quoting Psalm 118:26, they cried: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (JOHN 12:13). But the very next verse in that psalm refers to bringing a sacrifice “with boughs in hand” (PSALM 118:27). While the crowd in John 12 anticipated an earthly king to save them from Rome, Jesus was much more. He was King of Kings and our sacrifice—God in the flesh, willingly embracing the cross to save us from our sins—a purpose prophesied centuries earlier.

“At first his disciples did not understand all this,” John writes. Only later “did they realize that these things had been written about him” (JOHN 12:16). Illumined by His Word, God’s eternal purposes became clear. He loves us enough to send a mighty Savior! JAMES BANKS
