일식

나는 눈 보호장비와 직접 만든 달 모양의 파이 간식을 준비하고 관찰하기에 아주 이상적인 장소를 찾아 모든 준비를 마쳤습니다. 그러고는 미국 내 수백 만 명의 사람들과 함께 우리 식구 모두 달이 해를 완전히 가리는 보기 드문 완전 개기일식을 지켜봤습니다. 일식으로 어느 밝은 여름 오후가 어둠으로 덮혀버리는 진기한 현상이 일어났습니다. 이 일식은 우리에게 재미있는 행사였고 창조물을 주관하시는 하나님의 엄청난 능력을 다시 되새기게 해주었지만(시편 135:6-7), 역사적으로 대낮의 어둠은 모든 것이 제 자리에 있지 않다는 비정상적이고 두려운 일의 상징으로 여겨졌습니다(출애굽기 10:21; 마태복음 27:45). 고대 이스라엘의 분리 왕국 시절의 아모스 선지자에게도 어둠은 그런 것을 의미했습니다. 아모스는 북왕국에게 그들이 계속 하나님에게서 멀어지면 파멸을 맞을 거라고 경고하면서, 그 한 표시로 하나님께서 “그 날에 해를 대낮에 지게 하여 백주에 땅을 캄캄하게 하실” 거라고 말했습니다(아모스 8:9). 그러나 하나님의 궁극적인 바람과 목적은 예전이나 지금이나 모든 일을 바르게 되돌려놓는 것입니다. 사람들이 포로로 끌려갈 때조차도 하나님은 남은 자들을 예루살렘으로 되돌아오게 하셔서 “그 허물어진 것을 일으켜서 옛적과 같이 세우리라”(9:11)고 약속하셨습니다. 이스라엘처럼 삶이 극도로 암울할 때조차도, 우리는 하나님께서 ‘모든’ 사람들에게 빛과 소망을 주시기 위해 역사하고 계시다는 것을 앎으로 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다(사도행전 15:14-18).

ECLIPSE

I was prepared with eye protection, an ideal viewing location, and homemade moon pie desserts. Along with millions of people in the US, my family watched the rare occurrence of a total solar eclipse—the moon covering the entire disk of the sun. The eclipse caused an unusual darkness to come over the typically bright summer afternoon. Although for us this eclipse was a fun celebration and a reminder of God’s incredible power over creation (PSALM 135:6–7), throughout history darkness during the day has been seen as abnormal and foreboding (EXODUS 10:21; MATTHEW 27:45), a sign that everything is not as it should be. This is what darkness signified for Amos, a prophet during the time of the divided monarchy in ancient Israel. Amos warned the Northern Kingdom that destruction would come if they continued to turn away from God. As a sign, God would “make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight” (AMOS 8:9). But God’s ultimate desire and purpose was—and is—to make all things right. Even when the people were taken into exile, God promised to one day bring a remnant back to Jerusalem and “repair its broken walls and restore its ruins” (9:11). Even when life is at its darkest, like Israel, we can find comfort in
knowing God is at work to bring light and hope back—to all people (ACTS 15:14–18). LISA M. SAMRA

“아, 안 돼!” 아내가 부엌에 들어가며 비명을 질렀습니다. 바로 그 순간, 집에서 기르는 90파운드(약 41킬로그램) 나가는 래브라도 리트리버 개 “맥스”가 부엌에서 쏜살같이 뛰쳐나왔습니다. 부엌 조리대 가 장자리에 아 주 가 깝게 놓 여있던 양 의 다 리가 사라진 것입니다. 맥스가 그것을 먹어치우고 빈 냄비만 뎅그러니 남겨놓았습니다. 맥스는 침대 아래에 숨으려 했지만 머리와 어깨만 가려질 뿐이어서 내가 잡으러 갔을 때 그의 드러난 엉덩이와 꼬리가 그가 어디 숨었는지 다 보여주었습니다. 나는 “맥스, 네 죄가 너를 찾아낼 거야”라고 중얼거렸습니다. 이 말은 모세가 이스라엘의 두 부족에게 하나님께 순종하고 그들의 약속을 지키라고 훈계하면서 했던 말입니다. “너희가 만일 그같이 아니하면 여호와께 범죄함이니 너희 죄가 반드시 너희를 찾아낼 줄 알라”(민수기 32:23). 죄는 잠시 기분을 좋게 해줄지는 몰라도, 궁극적으로 하나님과 멀어지는 고통의 원인이 됩니다. 모세는 하나님은 하나도 놓치지 않고 다 보신다는 것을 그의 백성들에게 상기시켰던 것입니다. 한 성경 저자는 그것을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “지으신 것이 하나도 그 앞에 나타나지 않음이 없고 우리의 결산을 받으실 이의 눈앞에 만물이 벌거벗은 것 같이 드러나느니라”(히브리서 4:13). 모든 것을 다 보시지만, 우리의 거룩하신 하나님은 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하고 회개하고(죄에서 돌이키고) 그분과 올바로 동행하도록 사랑으로 이끌어주십니다(요한1서 1:9). 오늘 우리가 사랑 안에서 그분을 따를 수 있기를 바랍니다.

THE ONE WHO SEES

“Oh no!” My wife’s voice rang out when she stepped into the kitchen. The moment she did, our ninety-pound Labrador retriever “Max” bolted from the room. Gone was the leg of lamb that had been sitting too close to the edge of the counter. Max had consumed it, leaving only an empty pan. He tried to hide under a bed. But only his head and shoulders fit. His uncovered rump and tail betrayed his whereabouts when I went to track him down. “Oh, Max,” I murmured, “Your ‘sin’ will find you out.” The phrase was borrowed from Moses, when he admonished two tribes of Israel to be obedient to God and keep their promises. He told them: “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out” (NUMBERS 32:23). Sin may feel good for a moment, but it causes the ultimate pain of separation from God. Moses was reminding his people that God misses nothing. As one biblical writer put it, “Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (HEBREWS 4:13). Though seeing all, our holy God lovingly draws us to confess our sin, repent of it (turn from it), and walk rightly with Him (1 JOHN 1:9). May we follow Him in love today. JAMES BANKS

신학자 리차드 모우는 ‘쉼 없는 믿음’이라는 그의 책에서 지난날의 교훈을 기억하는 것이 중요하다고 하면서, “건강한 나라는 ‘기억을 함께하는 공동체’여야만 한다”고 했던 사회학자 로버트 벨라의 말을 인용하고 있습니다. 벨라는 가족과 같은 또 다른 사회 결합체로까지 그 원리를 확장하여 적용하였습니다. 기억한다는 것은 공동체의 삶에서 중요한 요소입니다. 성경 또한 공동체가 함께하는 기억이 중요하다고 가르치고 있습니다. 유월절은 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 애굽의 노예 생활에서 구원하시기 위해 행하신 일들을 기억하라고 그들에게 주신 명절이었습니다(출애굽기 12:1-30 참조). 오늘날도 세계 각처에 있는 유대인들은 해마다 봄이 오면 유대인 공동체의 그 기억을 기념하고 있습니다. 유월절은 언제나 메시아의 십자가 사역을 가리키고 있기 때문에 그리스도를 따르는 사람들이라면 누구에게나 큰 의미가 있습니다. 예수님이 십자가에 달리시기 전날 밤 자신을 기념하기 위한 상을 차리신 것도 바로 유월절 동안이었습니다. 누가복음 22장 19절은 이렇게 기록합니다. “(주님께서) 떡을 가져 감사 기도하시고 떼어 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 이것은 너희를 위하여 주는 내 몸이라 너희가 이를 행하여 나를 기념하라.” 주의 식탁에 모여 주의 성찬을 기념할 때마다, 우리는 그리스도께서 우리를 죄의 노예 상태에서 구원하여 영원한 생명을 주셨다는 것을 기억합니다. 우리를 구원하신 예수님의 사랑을 생각하며, 우리가 기억해야 할 주님의 십자가를 함께 되새길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

In his book Restless Faith, theologian Richard Mouw talks about the importance of remembering the lessons of the past. He quotes sociologist Robert Bellah, who said that “healthy nations must be ‘communities of memory.’ ” Bellah extended that principle to other societal bonds such as families. Remembering is an important part of living in community. The Scriptures teach the value of community memory as well. The Israelites were given the Passover feast to remind them of what God had done to rescue them from slavery in Egypt (SEE EXODUS 12:1–30). Still today, Jewish people around the world revisit that rich community memory every spring. Passover holds great meaning for followers of Christ too, for Passover has always pointed to the work of the Messiah on the cross. It was during
Passover, the night before the cross, that Jesus established His own memorial table. Luke 22:19 records, “He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’” Every time we gather at the Lord’s Table to celebrate Communion, we remember that Christ rescued us from slavery to sin and provided us with eternal life. May the rescuing love of Jesus remind us that His cross is worth remembering—together. BILL CROWDER

내가 한 주간 동안 스트레스로 인해 감정의 기복이 심했다고 털어놓자 상담가는 내 말을 경청하더니 창문 너머로 가을의 오렌지색과 금빛으로 무성한 나무와 바람에 흔들리는 가지들을 바라보라고 했습니다. 그러더니 바람에도 끄떡없는 ‘나무의 몸통’을 가리키며 말했습니다. “우리도 비슷한 것 같아요. 사방에서 우리 삶을 흔들 때 우리의 감정도 오르락 내리락 왔다 갔다 해요. 그런데 우리는 마치 ‘나무의 가지’처럼 살 때가 많아요. 우리가 하는 상담의 목표는 당신 자신의 ‘몸통’을 찾도록 도와주는 거예요. 몸통을 찾게 되면, 사방에서 아무리 흔들어대도 당신은 가지로 ‘살지’ 않고 여전히 안전하고 안정된 삶을 살 수 있게 될 거예요.” 상담가가 보여준 그 이미지가 강하게 내 마음에 와 닿았습니다. 그것은 바울이 에베소의 새 신자들에게 보여주었던 이미지와 비슷했습니다. 바울은 하나님이 주신 믿기 힘든 선물인 원대한 목적과 가치를 지닌 새로운 삶을 상기시키며(에베소서 2:6-10), 성도들이 그리스도의 사랑 안에서 깊이 “뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서”(3:17) 더 이상 “온갖 교훈의 풍조에 밀려 요동하지 않게”

LIVING IN THE BRANCHES

As I shared with my counselor my roller-coaster of emotions after a stress-filled week, she listened thoughtfully. Then she invited me to look out the window at the trees, lush with autumnal oranges and golds, the branches swaying in the wind. Pointing out that the trunks weren’t moving at all in the wind, my counselor explained, “We’re a bit like that. When life is blowing at us from every
direction, of course our emotions will go up and down and all around. But sometimes we live as if we only have branches. Our goal is to help you find your own trunk. That way, even when life is pulling from all sides, you won’t be living in your branches. You’ll still be secure and stable.” It’s an image that’s stuck with me; and it’s similar to the image Paul offered new believers in Ephesians. Reminding them of God’s incredible gift—a new life of tremendous purpose and value (EPHESIANS 2:6–10), Paul shared his longing that they’d become deeply “rooted and established”
in Christ’s love (3:17), no longer “blown here and there by every wind of teaching” (4:14). On our own, it’s easy to feel insecure and fragile, pummeled by our fears and insecurities. But as we grow in our true identity in Christ (VV. 22–24), we can experience deep peace with God and each other (V. 3), nourished and sustained by Christ’s power and beauty (VV. 15–16). 참된 자유

영화 ‘아미스타드’는 1839년 서아프리카 노예들이 그들을 태우고 가던 배를 탈취하고 선장과 선원 몇 명을 살해한 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 결국 그들은 다시 잡혀 감옥에 갇히고 재판에 회부되었습니다. 법정에서의 잊지 못할 장면은 노예들의 지도자 친케가 열정적으로 자유를 탄원하는 장면입니다 쇠사슬에 묶인 남자가 점차 더 강한 어조로 반복하며 말하는 “우리에게 자유를 달라!”는 서툰 영어 세 마디가 마침내는 법정 안을 침묵에 빠뜨렸습니다. 정의는 실현되었고 그들은 자유롭게 되었습니다.

오늘날 대부분의 사람들은 신체적으로 속박될 위험은 없습니다. 하지만 죄의 영적 구속으로부터의 진정한 해방은 아직 요원합니다. “그러므로 아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라”고 하신 요한복음 8장 36절 예수님의 말씀은 우리를 안심시켜 줍니다. 예수님은 그를 믿는 모든 사람을 용서하시기 때문에 자신이 진정한 해방의 원천이라고 하셨습니다. 그리스도의 말을 듣던 어떤 사람들은 자신이 자유롭다고 주장하였으나 (33절), 예수님을 대하던 그들의 말과 태도와 행동을 보면 그들의 주장은 전혀 사실이 아니었습니다.

예수님은 친케의 탄원처럼 “제게 자유를 주소서!”라고 말하는 사람들의 소리를 듣기 원하십니다. 긍휼하신 예수님은 불신과 두려움과 실패의 쇠사슬에 묶인 사람들의 부르짖는 소리를 기다리십니다. 그런 해방은 예수님이 그분의 죽음과 부활을 통해 우리를 붙잡고 있는 죄의 권세를 깨뜨리시려 이 세상에 오신 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자들을 위해 예비되어 있습니다.

FREE INDEED

The film Amistad tells the story of West African slaves in 1839 taking over the boat that was transporting them and killing the captain and some of the crew. Eventually they were recaptured, imprisoned, and taken to trial. An unforgettable courtroom scene features Cinqué, leader of the slaves, passionately pleading for freedom. Three simple words—repeated with increasing force by a shackled man with broken English—eventually silenced the courtroom, “Give us free!” Justice was served and the men were freed.

Most people today aren’t in danger of being physically bound, yet true liberation from the spiritual bondage of sin remains elusive. The words of Jesus in John 8:36 offer sweet relief: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Jesus pointed to Himself as the source of true emancipation because He offers forgiveness to anyone who believes in Him. Though some in Christ’s audience claimed freedom (V. 33), their words, attitudes, and actions regarding Jesus betrayed their claim.

Jesus longs to hear those who would echo Cinqué’s plea and say, “Give me freedom!” With compassion He awaits the cries of those who are shackled by unbelief or fear or failure. Freedom is a matter of the heart. Such liberty is reserved for those who believe that Jesus is God’s Son who was sent into the world to break the power of sin’s hold on us through His death and resurrection. ARTHUR JACKSON

바로 당신 옆에

예루살렘의 한 우체국에서는 배달할 수 없는 편지들을 직원들이 매일 분류하여 각 편지를 수신자별로 나눕니다. 나중에 보면 그 중 많은 편지들이 “하나님께 보내는 편지” 라고 특별히 쓰인 상자로 들어갑니다.

해마다 이런 편지들이 천 통 가량 예루살렘에 도착하는데 주소는 단순히 하나님 또는 예수님이라고 적혀 있습니다. 이 편지들의 처리 방법을 놓고 궁리 끝에 한 직원이 편지들을 예루살렘의 통곡의 벽으로 가지고 가서 다른 기도 쪽지들이 꽂혀 있는 돌 사이에 끼워넣기 시작했습니다. 대부분의 편지들은 직업이나 배우자, 혹은 건강을 간구하는 것들입니다. 용서를 구하는 것도 있고 단순히 감사를 전하는 편지들도 있습니다. 어떤 사람은 자신의 죽은 아내가 너무 보고 싶어 꿈속에 나타나게 해 달라고 하나님께 구하기도 했습니다. 편지를 보낸 사람들은 하나님께 전달되기만 한다면 그분이 들으실 것이라고 믿었습니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 광야를 지나는 동안 많은 것을 배웠습니다. 그 중 한 가지는 하나님은 당시에 알던 다른 신들, 즉 멀리 있고 듣지 못하며 장소에 제한이 있고, 긴 순례를 거쳐야만 하거나 국제 메일을 통해야만 도달할 수 있는 그런 신들과는 다르다는 것이었습니다. 그렇습니다. “주 우리의 하나님은 우리가 기도할 때마다 우리 가까이에 계시는 분이십니다”(신명기 4:7, 새번역). 어느 민족에게 이런 신이 있겠습니까? 이것은 획기적인 뉴스였습니다!

하나님은 예루살렘에 살고 계시지 않습니다. 그분은 우리가 어디에 있든지 우리 가까이 계십니다. 아직도 이 놀라운 진리를 알아야 할 사람들이 있습니다. 그 각각의 편지에 이런 답장을 보낼 수만 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요. ‘하나님은 바로 당신 옆에 계십니다. 그냥 그분께 말씀하십시오.’

RIGHT BESIDE YOU

Each day at a post office in Jerusalem, workers sort through piles of undeliverable letters in an attempt to guide each to its recipient. Many end up in a specially marked box labeled “Letters to God.”

About a thousand such letters reach Jerusalem each year, addressed simply to God or Jesus. Puzzled by what to do with them, one worker began taking the letters to Jerusalem’s Western Wall to have them placed between its stone blocks with other written prayers. Most of the letters ask for a job, a spouse, or good health. Some request forgiveness, others just offer thanks. One man asked God if his deceased wife could appear in his dreams because he longed to see her again. Each sender believed God would listen, if only He could be reached.

The Israelites learned much as they journeyed through the wilderness. One lesson was that their God wasn’t like the other gods known at the time—distant, deaf, geographically bound, reached only by lengthy pilgrimage or international mail. No, “the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him” (DEUTERONOMY 4:7). What other people could claim that? This was revolutionary news!

찬양합시다!

매일 오후 3시 16분 전화기에서 알람이 울리면 셀리는 찬양을 위해 휴식을 취하면서 하나님께 감사하고 그분의 선하심에 감사를 표합니다. 셀리는 하루 종일 하나님과 소통하고 있지만 이 시간이 하나님과의 친밀한 관계를 기릴 수 있기 때문에 이 휴식 시간을 아주 좋아합니다.

그녀가 즐겁게 헌신하는 것에 영감을 받아서 나도 하루에 따로 시간을 내어 예수님의 십자가의 희생에 감사드리고 구원 받아야 할 영혼들을 위해 기도하기로 했습니다. 예수님을 믿는 모든 이들이 매일 주님을 그들 나름의 방식대로 찬양하고 또 다른 사람들을 위해 기도한다면 어떨까 생각해봅니다.

시편 67편 말씀에는 이 땅 끝까지 퍼져가는 아름다운 찬양의 물결의 이미지가 소리로 들리는 듯합니다. 시편 기자는 하나님의 은혜를 간구하며 하나님의 이름이 모든 나라에서 높아지기를 바라는 그의 소망을 선포합니다 (1-2절). 그는 “하나님이여 민족들이 주를 찬송하게 하시며 모든 민족들이 주를 찬송하게 하소서”(3절)라고 노래하며 주님의 절대주권적인 통치와 신실하신 인도를 찬양합니다(4절). 하나님의 위대한 사랑과 풍족한 축복의 살아 있는 증인으로서 시편 기자는 하나님의 백성들을 기쁨의 찬양으로 인도합니다 (5-6절).

사랑하시는 자녀들을 향한 하나님의 변치 않는 신실하심 때문에 우리는 주님을 인정하며 감사를 드립니다. 우리가 그렇게 할 때 다른 사람들도 우리와 같이 하나님을 믿고 경배하고 따르며 그분을 주님으로 모실 수 있게 될 것입니다.

LET US PRAISE!

When the alarm on Shelley’s phone goes off every day at 3:16 in the afternoon, she takes a praise break. She thanks God and acknowledges His goodness. Although she communicates with God throughout the day, Shelley loves to take this break because it helps her celebrate her intimate relationship with Him.

Inspired by her joyful devotion, I decided to set a specific time each day to thank Christ for His sacrifice on the cross and to pray for those who have yet to be saved. I wonder what it would be like if all believers in Jesus stopped to praise Him in their own way and pray for others every day.

The image of a beautiful wave of worship rolling to the ends of the earth resounds in the words of Psalm 67. The psalmist pleads for God’s grace, proclaiming his desire to make His name great in all the nations (VV. 1–2). He sings, “May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you” (V. 3). He celebrates His sovereign rule and faithful guidance (V. 4). As a living testimony of God’s great love and abundant blessings, the psalmist leads God’s people into jubilant praise (VV. 5–6).

God’s continued faithfulness toward His beloved children inspires us to acknowledge Him. As we do, others can join us in trusting Him, revering Him, following Him, and acclaiming Him as Lord. XOCHITL DIXON

물 가운데로 지날 때

영화 ‘존스의 자유주’(The Free State of Jones)는 미국 남북전쟁 당시 북부군을 돕다가 전쟁 후에는 노예 소유주들과 맞서 싸웠던 뉴턴 나이트와 몇 명의 남부군 탈영병, 그리고 노예들의 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 많은 이들이 나이트를 영웅으로 보고 있지만 사실은 두 노예가 탈영을 한 나이트의 생명을 먼저 구해주었습니다. 그들은 남부군으로부터 탈영하면서 다리에 큰 상처를 입은 나이트를 외딴 늪지대 깊숙히 데려가서 치료해주었습니다. 만약 그냥 내버려 두었다면 나이트는 목숨을 잃었을 지도 모릅니다.

유다 백성들은 상처를 입고 절망적이었으며 적들을 맞이하여 어찌 할 바를 몰랐습니다. 이스라엘은 앗수르에 의해 멸망당했고 언젠가 그들(유다)도 바벨론에 의해 멸망할 것이라고 이사야는 예언했습니다. 유다는 그들을 도와서 구 출해주고 버리지 아 니할 하 나님이 필요했습니다. 그런 상황에서 “두려워하지 말라 내가 너와 함께 하리라”(이사야 43:5)는 하나님의 확언을 들은 유다 백성들의 그 솟아나는 희망을 한번 상상해 보십시오. 그것은 어떤 재난이 닥치거나 인내해야 할 어떤 고난 속에도 하나님이 그들과 같이 하신다는 것이었습니다. 하나님은 그들이 “물 가운데로 지날 때에” 함께 하셔서 그들을 안전한 곳으로 인도하실 것이며(2절), 그들이 “불 가운데로 지날 때에” 함께 하셔서 불꽃이 그들을 사르지 못하도록 지켜 주신다는 것이었습니다(2절).

성경 전체를 통해 하나님은 그의 백성과 함께 하시며 우리를 보호하시고 인도하시며 생사 간에 결코 버리지 않는다고 약속하십니다. 곤경에 처할 때라도 하나님은 우리와 함께 하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 물 가운데로 지날 때에 도와주실 것입니다.

THROUGH THE WATERS

The movie The Free State of Jones tells the US Civil War story of Newton Knight and some Confederate deserters and slaves who aided the Union Army and then resisted slaveholders after the war. Many herald Knight as the hero, but two slaves first saved his life after his desertion. They carried him deep into a secluded swampland and tended a leg wound he suffered while fleeing Confederate forces. If they’d abandoned him, he would have died.

The people of Judah were wounded and desperate, facing enemies and feeling helpless. Israel had been overtaken by Assyria, and Isaiah prophesied that one day they (Judah) would also be overcome by an enemy—Babylonia. Judah needed a God who would help, who would rescue and not forsake them. Imagine, then, the surging hope when the people heard God’s assurance: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you” (ISAIAH 43:5). Whatever calamity they faced or trouble they would endure, He would be with them. He would “pass through the waters” with them, leading them to safety (V. 2). He would “walk through the fire” with them, helping them through the scorching flames (V. 2).

Throughout Scripture, God promises to be with His people, to care for us, guide us, and never abandon us—whether in life or death. Even when you find yourself in difficult places, God is with you. He’ll help you pass through the waters. WINN COLLIER

노래하시는 하나님 아버지

댄디는 사람들에게 노래를 불러주며 격려하기를 아주 좋아합니다. 어느 날 그가 좋아하는 식당에서 다 같이 점심 식사를 하는데 웨이트리스가 힘들어하는 것이 보였습니다. 그는 그녀에게 몇 가지를 물어보고는 용기를 주려고 쉽고 밝은 노래를 조용히 부르기 시작했습니다. 웨이트리스는 음식 주문을 받아쓰면서 큰 미소로 말했습니다. “친절하신 선생님, 감사합니다. 오늘 제 기분을 아주 즐겁게 해주셨어요. 정말 고맙습니다.”

구약의 스바냐서를 펼치면 하나님께서 노래하기를 아주 좋아하신다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 스바냐 선지자는 그의 글에서 하나님을 그의 자녀들과 함께, 그들을 위하여 즐거이 노래 부르시는 분의 모습으로 참으로 멋지게 그리고 있습니다. 그는 하 나님은 “ 너로 말 미암아 기쁨을 이기지 못 하시며 너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라”(3:17) 고 기록합니다. 하나님은 그분의 자비로 변화된 사람들과 영원히 함께 계실 것이라고 약속하셨습니다. 그러나 그것이 끝이 아닙니다! 하나님은 그분의 자녀들이 “전심으로 기뻐하며 즐거워”(14절) 하도록 초대하여 그들의 즐거움에 함께 하십니다.

우리는 하나님과, 그리고 예수님을 구주로 믿는 자들과 함께 만나게 될 그날을 상상 밖에 할 수 없지만, 그날 하늘에 계시는 아버지께서 우리를 위해 함께 노래 부르시는 것을 듣고, 또 그분이 우리를 사랑하고 인정하고 받아들이시는 것을 경험하게 될 때 그 얼마나 감격스럽고 놀라울까요.

OUR FATHER SINGS

Dandy loves encouraging people by singing to them. One day we were having lunch at his favorite restaurant, and he noticed the waitress was having a hard day. He asked her a few questions and then started quietly singing a catchy, upbeat song to cheer her up. “Well, kind sir, you just made my day. Thank you so much,” she said with a big smile, as she wrote down our food order.

When we open the book of Zephaniah, we find that God loves to sing. The prophet masterfully drew a picture with his words in which he described God as a musician who loves to sing for and with His children. He wrote that God “will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing” (3:17). God promised to be present forever with those who have been transformed by His mercy. But it doesn’t stop there! He invites and joins in with His people to “be glad and rejoice with all your heart” (V. 14).

We can only imagine the day when we’ll be together with God and with all those who’ve put their trust in Jesus as their Savior. How amazing it will be to hear our heavenly Father sing songs for and with us and experience His love, approval, and acceptance. ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

힘든 일을 향해 달려가기

톰은 가난한 친구의 자전거를 훔쳐 달아나는 청년들을 뒤쫓아갔습니다. 어떤 계획도 없었고, 단지 그 자전거를 다시 찾아야만 한다는 생각뿐 이었습니다. 놀랍게도 세 도둑이 톰이 오는 것을 보고는 자전거를 버리고 달아났습니다. 톰은 자전거를 찾아 안심도 되고 또 스스로 대견스러워하면서 돌아섰는데, 바로 그때 체격 좋은 친구 제프가 바로 뒤에 따라오고 있는 것을 보았습니다.

엘리사의 종은 온 마을이 적군으로 포위된 것을 보고 공포에 빠졌습니다. 그가 엘리사에게 달려가 “아아 내 주여 우리가 어찌 하리이까” 하자 엘리사는 두려워하지 말라고 하며 “우리와 함께한 자가 그들과 함께한 자보다 많으니라” 고 말했습니다. 그리고 하나님이 종의 눈을 뜨게 하시자 “그가 보니 불말과 불병거가 산에 가득하여 엘리사를 두르고 있었습니다”(15-17절).

예수님을 따르려 노력할 때 가끔 위험한 상황에 처할 수도 있습니다. 옳은 것을 행하려고 결심했다가 명예나 심지어 안전까지 위험해질 수 있습니다. 어떻게 될까 걱정하느라 잠을 설칠 수도 있습니다. 그러나 당신은 혼자가 아니라는 것을 기억하십시오. 앞에 놓인 힘든 일보다 더 강하거나 똑똑해야 할 필요가 없습니다. 예수님이 당신과 함께 계시고 그의 능력이 모든 적보다 더 크기 때문입니다. 바울이 했던 질문을 당신 자신에게 해보십시오. “만일 하나님이 우리를 위하시면 누가 우리를 대적하리요”(로마서 8:31). 정말 ‘누가’ 대적할 수 있을까요? 아무도 못합니다. 당신의 힘든 일을 향해 하나님과 함께 달려가십시오.

RUN TOWARD CHALLENGE

Tom chased the young men who were stealing his poor friend’s bike. He didn’t have a plan. He only knew he needed to get it back. To his surprise, the three thieves looked his way, dropped the bike and backed away. Tom was both relieved and impressed with himself as he picked up the bike and turned around. That’s when he saw Jeff, his muscular friend who had been trailing close behind.

Elisha’s servant panicked when he saw his town surrounded by an enemy army. He ran to Elisha, “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” Elisha told him to relax. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then God opened the servant’s eyes, and he “saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all round Elisha” (VV. 15–17).

If you strive to follow Jesus, you may find yourself in some dicey situations. You may risk your reputation, and perhaps even your security, because you’re determined to do what’s right. You may lose sleep wondering how it will all turn out. Remember, you’re not alone. You don’t have to be stronger or smarter than the challenge before you. Jesus is with you, and His power is greater than all rivals. Ask yourself Paul’s question, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (ROMANS 8:31). Really, who? No one.
