책 속에서 찾는 즐거움

‘츤도쿠’. 언제나 나에게 필요했던 단어입니다. 그것은 잠자기 전에 읽으려고 침대 머리맡 탁자 위에 쌓아 놓은 책들을 뜻하는 일본말입니다. 책을 읽으면 무언가 배울 수 있고 다른 시간이나 공간으로 탈출할 수 있습니다. 나는 책장을 넘기면서 즐거움을 찾고 통찰력을 얻기를 원합니다. 그래서 쌓아 놓습니다.

책에서 즐거움과 도움을 얻을 수 있다는 생각은 책 중의 책인 성경을 통해서 더욱 확실해집니다. 나는 새로 임명된 이스라엘의 지도자 여호수아가 이스라엘 자손을 약속의 땅으로 인도하도록 위임하는 하나님의 지시 부분 (여호수아 1:8)을 읽을 때 성경에 더욱 빠져 듭니다.

앞날의 어려움을 아시는 하나님은 여호수아에게 “내가 너와 함께 있을 것”(5절)이라고 확신시켜 주십니다. 하나님의 도움은 한편으로는 여호수아가 하나님의 명령에 순종하면 올 것입니다. 그래서 하나님은 여호수아에게 “이 율법책을 네 입에서 떠나지 말게 하며 주야로 그것을 묵상하여 그 안에 기록된 대로 다 지켜 행하라”(8절)고 지시하십니다. 여호수아는 율법책을 가지고 있었지만, 하나님이 어떤 분이시며 자기 백성을 향한 그분의 뜻이 무엇인지 이해하고 통찰력을 얻기 위해 규칙적으로 그 책을 읽을 필요가 있었습니다.

지금 가르침이나 진리, 혹은 격려가 필요하십니까? 우리가 시간을 내어 성경을 읽고 순종하고 그 속에서 양식을 찾는다면 성경의 각 페이지에 담겨 있는 모든 것을 음미할 수 있을 것입니다 (디모데후서 3:16).

DELIGHT IN THE BOOK

Tsundoku. It’s the word I’ve always needed! A Japanese term, it refers to the stack of books on a bedside table waiting to be read. Books offer the potential for learning or an escape to a different time or place, and I long for the delights and insights found within their pages. So, the stack remains.

The idea that we can find enjoyment and help in a book is even more true for the book of books—the Bible. I see the encouragement to immerse oneself in Scripture in God’s instructions to Joshua, the newly appointed leader of Israel, commissioned to lead them into the land promised to the Israelites (JOSHUA 1:8).

Knowing the difficulty ahead, God assured Joshua, “I will be with you” (V. 5). His help would come, in part, through Joshua’s obedience to God’s commands. So God instructed him to “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it” (V. 8). Although Joshua had the Book of the Law, he needed to regularly search it to gain insight and understanding into who God is and His will for His people.

Do you need instruction, truth, or encouragement for your day? As we take time to read, obey, and find nourishment through Scripture, we can savor all that’s contained in its pages (2 TIMOTHY 3:16). - LISA M. SAMRA

죽음을 기다리는 기쁨

DEATH ROW JOY

In 1985 Anthony Ray Hinton was charged with the murders of two restaurant managers. It was a set up—he’d been miles away when the crimes happened—but he was found guilty and sentenced to death. At the trial, Ray forgave those who lied about him, adding that he still had joy despite this injustice. “After my death, I’m going to heaven,” he said. “Where are you going?”

Life on death row was hard for Ray. Prison lights flickered whenever the electric chair was used for others, a grim reminder of what lay ahead. Ray passed a lie detector test but the results were ignored, one of many injustices he faced getting his case reheard.

Finally, on Good Friday 2015, Ray’s conviction was overturned by the US Supreme Court. He’d been on death row for nearly thirty years. His life is a testament to the reality of God. Because of his faith in Jesus, Ray had a hope beyond his trials (1 PETER 1:3–5) and experienced supernatural joy in the face of injustice (V. 8). “This joy that I have,” Ray said after his release, “they couldn’t ever take that away in prison.” Such joy proved his faith to be genuine (VV. 7–8).

Death row joy? That’s hard to fabricate. It points us to a God who exists even though He’s unseen and who’s ready to sustain us in our own ordeals. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

묻기도 전에

수십 년 동안 행복한 결혼 생활을 해 오고 있는 내 친구 로버트와 콜린 부부가 서로 주고 받는 모습이 아주 보기 좋습니다. 저녁 식사를 하면 한 사람이 알아서 상대방에게 버터를 건네주기도 하고, 상대방은 적절한 때에 잔을 채워줍니다. 한 쪽이 이야기를 하면 다른 쪽이 말을 맺어줍니다. 가끔은 그들이 서로의 마음을 읽을 수 있는 것처럼 보입니다.

하나님께서 우리가 아는 그리고 사랑하는 그 어떤 사람보다도 우리를 잘 아시고 돌보신다는 사실을 생각하면 위안이 됩니다. 이사야 선지자는 다가올 하나님의 나라에서 하나님이 그의 백성들과 부드럽고 친밀한 관계를 갖게 될 거라고 설명합니다. 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 “그들이 부르기 전에 내가 응답하겠고 그들이 말을 마치기 전에 내가 들을 것”(이사야 65:24)이라고 말씀하십니다.

어떻게 그처럼 될 수 있을까요? 내게는 오래 동안 기도해 왔지만 아직 응답 받지 못한 것들이 있습니다. 하지만 나는 우리가 하나님과 가까워지고 우리의 마음이 하나님의 마음과 통한다면 하나님의 때와 돌보심을 신뢰하는 법을 배울 수 있다고 믿습니다. 그럴 때 하나님이 바라시는 대로 우리도 바라게 됩니다. 우리가 기도할 때도 다른 어떤 것보다 이사야 65장에서 말하고 있는 하나님 나라에 속한 것들을 구하게 됩니다. 즉 슬픔이 끝나고(19절), 하나님의 모든 백성을 위한 안전한 거처와 풍족함과 헛되지 않은 수고(21-23절), 그리고 이 세상의 평화(25절)를 위해 간구하게 됩니다. 하나님의 나라가 완전한 모습으로 임할 때, 하나님께서 이 기도들을 온전히 응답해 주실 것입니다.

BEFORE YOU EVEN ASK

My friends Robert and Colleen have experienced a healthy marriage for decades, and I love watching them interact. One will pass the butter to the other at dinner before being asked for it. The other will refill a glass at the perfect moment. When they tell stories, they finish each other’s sentences. Sometimes it seems they can read each other’s mind.

It’s comforting that God knows and cares for us even more than any person we know and love. When the prophet Isaiah describes the relationship between God and His people in the coming kingdom, he describes a tender, intimate relationship. God says about His people, “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear” (ISAIAH 65:24).

But how can this be true? There are things I’ve prayed about for years without receiving a response. I believe that as we grow in intimacy with God, aligning our hearts with His, we can learn to trust in His timing and care. We can begin to desire what God desires. When we pray, we ask for—among other things—the things that are part of God’s kingdom as described in Isaiah 65: An end to sorrow (V. 19). Safe homes and full bellies and meaningful work for all people (VV. 21–23). Peace in the natural world (V. 25). When God’s kingdom comes in its fullness, God will answer these prayers completely. - AMY PETERSON

놀라운 기술

우리 대학 합창단 리더는 지휘하며 동시에 피아노 반주까지 하는 두 가지 일을 능숙하게 잘해 냈습니다. 어느 날 합창 공연이 끝날 무렵, 그가 평소보다 많이 지쳐 보여 괜찮은지 물어보았습니다. 그는 “그런 일은 처음이야”라고 하면서 그 이유를 설명해 주었습니다. “피아노 음정이 너무 안 맞아서 연주회 내내 다른 두개의 키로 연주해야 했어. 왼손으로는 한 키, 오른손으로는 다른 키로 연주한 거지!” 나는 그가 보여준 놀라운 기술에 완전히 감동 받았고, 그렇게 할 수 있도록 사람을 창조하신 하나님께 감탄했습니다.

다윗 왕은 훨씬 더 큰 경이로움을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “내가 주께 감사하옴은 나를 지으심이 심히 기묘하심이라 주께서 하시는 일이 기이함을 내 영혼이 잘 아나이다”(시편 139:14). 사람의 능력이든 자연의 기묘함이든, 창조의 경이로움은 우리로 창조주의 위엄을 바라보게 합니다.

언젠가 우리가 하나님 앞에 설 때, 각각 여러 시대를 살아온 사람들이 모여 이렇게 하나님을 경배할 것입니다. “우리 주 하나님이여 영광과 존귀와 권능을 받으시는 것이 합당하오니 주께서 만물을 지으신지라 만물이 주의 뜻대로 있었고 또 지으심을 받았나이다”(요한계시록 4:11). 하나님이 우리에게 주신 놀라운 재능과 하나님의 창조의 위대한 아름다움은 그분을 경배할 충분한 이유가 됩니다.

AMAZING SKILL

The leader of our college singing group directed the group and accompanied us on the piano at the same time, skillfully balancing those responsibilities. At the close of one concert, he looked particularly weary, so I asked him if he was okay. He responded, “I’ve never had to do that before.” Then he explained. “The piano was so out of tune that I had to play the whole concert in two different keys—my left hand playing in one key and my right hand in another!” I was blown away by the startling skill he displayed, and I was amazed at the One who creates humans to be capable of such things.

King David expressed an even greater sense of wonder when he wrote, “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it” (PSALM 139:14 NLT). Whether in people’s abilities or nature’s marvels, the wonders of creation point us to the majesty of our Creator.

One day, when we’re in God’s presence, people from every generation will worship Him with the words, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (REVELATION 4:11). The amazing skills God gives us and the great beauty God has created are ample reason to worship Him. - BILL CROWDER

나이지리아 사업가인 질은 라고스의 한 병원 침대에 누워 있는 환자에게 몸을 굽혀 물었습니다. “어떻게 이렇게 다쳤나요?” 허벅지에 붕대를 감은 젊은이가 대답합니다. “누군가 나에게 총을 쐈어요.” 그 환자는 집으로 돌아갈 만큼 충분히 회복되었지만, 그 지역 국영 병원들이 지켜야 할 정책에 따라 치료비가 다 지불되기 전에는 퇴원할 수가 없었습니다. 질은 사회복지사와 상의한 후 이전에 자신이 기독교인의 믿음을 실천하기 위해 설립한 자선기금으로 그 청년의 치료비를 익명으로 완불했습니다. 그는 이렇게 구제의 은혜를 받은 사람들이 그 보답으로 언젠가 다른 이들에게도 베풀 수 있기를 희망합니다.

성경에는 하나님의 재화를 나누는 말씀이 많이 나옵니다. 예를 들어, 모세는 이스라엘 백성들에게 약속의 땅에 들어가 어떻게 살아야 하는지에 대해 가르치면서, 하나님께 먼저 드리고(신명기 26:1-3 참조), 나그네와 고아와 과부 같이 어려운 사람들을 돌보라고(12절) 말했습니다. 그들은 “젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅”(15절)에 살았기 때문에 궁핍한 자들에게 하나님의 사랑을 보여주어야 했습니다.

우리 역시 크든 작든 우리의 물질을 함께 나눔으로써 하나님의 사랑을 전할 수 있습니다. 우리는 질이 했던 것과 꼭같이 개인적으로 그렇게 베풀 수 있는 기회가 없을지 몰라도, 우리의 도움이 필요한 사람이 누구인지 그리고 어떻게 베풀어야 할지 알려 달라고 하나님께 기도할 수 있습니다.

THE BILL IS PAID

“What happened to you?” asked Zeal, a Nigerian businessman, as he bent over a hospital bed in Lagos. “Someone shot me,” replied the young man, his thigh bandaged. Although the injured man was well enough to return home, he wouldn’t be released until he settled his bill—a policy that many government hospitals in the region follow. After consulting with a social worker, Zeal anonymously covered the bill through the charitable fund he’d earlier set up as a way to express his Christian faith. In return, he hopes that those receiving the gift of release will one day give to others too.

The theme of giving from God’s bounty pulses throughout the Bible. For instance, when Moses instructed the Israelites on how to live in the Promised Land, he told them to give back to God first (SEE DEUTERONOMY 26:1–3) and to care for those in need—the foreigners, orphans, and widows (V. 12). Because they dwelled in a “land flowing with milk and honey” (V. 15), they were to express God’s love to the needy.

We too can spread God’s love through sharing our material goods, whether big or small. We might not have the opportunity to personally give exactly like Zeal did, but we can ask God to show us how to give or who needs our help. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

생명보다 나은 것

메리는 예수님을 사랑했지만 삶이 참으로 고달팠습니다. 두 아들이 먼저 세상을 떠났고 두 손자도 총격사건으로 목숨을 잃었습니다. 메리 자신은 뇌졸중이 와서 몸 한 쪽이 마비되었습니다. 그러나 그가 혼자 힘으로 교회에 출석할 수 있게 되자 또렷이 발음하기는 어려웠지만 평소와 같이 “내 영혼이 예수님을 사랑합니다. 주의 이름을 축복합니다!”라며 주님을 찬양했습니다.

메리가 그렇게 하나님을 찬양하기 오래 전에 다윗은 시편 63편을 썼습니다. 그 시편 앞머리에 “그가 황폐한 유다 땅에 거하고 있을 때” 그 시편을 썼다고 기록하고 있습니다. 그 누구도 바라지 않을 절망스럽기까지 한 상황 속에서도 다윗은 하나님 안에서 소망을 갖고 낙망하지 않았습니다. “하나님이여 주는 나의 하나님이시라 내가 간절히 주를 찾되 물이 없어 마르고 황폐한 땅에서 내 영혼이 주를 갈망하며”(1절).

당신은 어쩌면 분명한 방향도 모르고 가진 것도 별로 없는 어려운 지경에 놓여있을지 모릅니다. 난감한 상황으로 혼란스러울 수 있겠지만, 우리를 사랑하시고(3절), 만족시키시며(5절), 우리를 도우시고(7절), 오른손으로 우리를 붙드시는(8절) 주님을 붙잡으면 우리는 실족하지 않을 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑이 생명보다 나으므로, 우리는 메리와 다윗과 같이 하나님을 찬양하고 경외하는 입술로 우리의 만족을 표현할 수 있습니다(3-5절).

BETTER THAN LIFE

Though Mary loved Jesus—life was hard, real hard. Two sons preceded her in death as did two grandsons, both victims of shootings. And Mary herself suffered a crippling stroke that left her paralyzed on one side. Yet, as soon as she was able she made her way to church services where it wasn’t uncommon for her—with fractured speech—to express praise to the Lord with words like, “My soul loves Jesus; bless His name!”

Long before Mary expressed her praise to God, David penned the words of Psalm 63. The heading of the psalm notes that David wrote it “when he was in the Desert of Judah.” Though in a less than desirable— even desperate—situation, he didn’t despair because he hoped in God. “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you . . . in a dry and parched land where there is no water” (V. 1).

Perhaps you’ve found yourself in a place of difficulty, without clear direction or adequate resources. Uncomfortable situations can confuse us, but they need not derail us when we cling to the One who loves us (V. 3), satisfies us (V. 5), helps us (V. 7), and whose right hand upholds us (V. 8). Because God’s love is better than life, like Mary and David, we can express our satisfaction with lips that praise and honor God (VV. 3–5). - ARTHUR JACKSON

두더지 잡기 게임

당신은 이런 상황이 어떤 것인지 아마 아실 것입니다. 의료 시술을 받은 후 마취 의사, 수술 의사, 여러 검사, 의료기구 사용 등, 그들로부터 청구서가 끊임없이 계속 날아옵니다. 제이슨은 응급 수술을 받은 후에 이런 상황을 겪었습니다. 그는 이렇게 불평합니다. “우리는 보험 처리 후에도 수천 불의 빚을 지고 있어요. 이 청구서들만 해결되면 형편이 나아져서 맘 편히 살 것 같은데! 이건 마치 내가 두더지 잡기 게임을 하고 있는 것 같아요.” 그것은 구멍에서 갑자기 튀어나오는 플라스틱 두더지를 나무망치로 때려서 잡는 게임을 말합니다.

인생은 때때로 우리에게 그렇게 다가옵니다. 바울 사도도 예외는 아니었습니다. 그는 “가난하게 사는 법도 알고,” 그러나 “그 어떤 경우에도 스스로 만족하게 생각하는 비결을 배웠다”(빌립보서 4:12, 현대인의 성경)고 말했습니다. 그의 비결은 “내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서 내가 모든 것을 할 수 있다”(13절)는 것입니다. 내가 특히 힘든 시기를 지나고 있을 때 어떤 안부 카드에 쓰여 있는 “여기에 없다면 어디에 있을까?”라는 글을 읽은 적이 있습니다. 그 글은 내가 지금 이곳에서 만족하지 못할 때, 다른 상황에만 있다면 만족할 수 있을 텐데 라는 생각을 강렬하게 상기시켜 주는 문구였습니다.

예수님 안에서 안식을 누리는 법을 어떻게 배울 수 있을까요? 그것은 우리가 어느 것에 집중하는가의 문제일 수 있습니다. 주님의 선하심에 대해 즐거워하고 감사하는 것, 신실하신 하나님 아버지에 대해 더 알아가는 것, 신뢰와 인내 속에서 성장해 가는 것, 인생은 내가 아니라 하나님에 관한 것이라는 사실을 인정하는 것, 주님 안에서 만족하는 법을 가르쳐 달라고 그분께 기도하는 것 등 말입니다.

WHACK-A-MOLE

You might know what it’s like. The bills keep arriving after a medical procedure—from the anesthesiologist, the surgeon, the lab, the facility. Jason experienced this after an emergency surgery. He complained, “We owe thousands of dollars after insurance. If only we can get these bills paid, then life will be good and I’ll be content! I feel like I’m playing the arcade game Whack-a-Mole”—where plastic moles pop up from their holes, and the player hits them wildly with a mallet.

Life comes at us like that at times. The apostle Paul certainly could relate. He said, “I know what it is to be in need,” yet he’d “learned the secret of being content in any and every situation” (PHILIPPIANS 4:12). His secret? “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (V. 13). When I was going through a particularly discontented time, I read this on a greeting card: “If it isn’t here, where is it?” That was a powerful reminder that if I’m not content here and now, what makes me think I’d be if only I were in another situation?

How do we learn to rest in Jesus? Maybe it’s a matter of focus. Of enjoying and being thankful for the good. Of learning more about a faithful Father. Of growing in trust and patience. Of recognizing that life is about God and not me. Of asking Him to teach me contentment in Him. - ANNE CETAS

모든 기회

용을 잡아 본 적이 있으십니까? 나도 아들이 시켜서 휴대폰에 게임을 다운로드 받기 전까지는 해본 적이 없었습니다. 그 게임은 실제 세상을 투영한 디지털 지도를 만들어 주변의 다채로운 생명체들을 잡게 해줍니다.

대부분의 휴대폰 게임과는 달리 이 게임을 하려면 움직여야 합니다. 당신이 가는 곳 어디나 게임의 무대가 됩니다. 그 결과, 나는 아주 많이 걷고 있습니다! 아들과 함께 게임을 할 때면 주변에서 불쑥 튀어나오는 생물들을 잡을 수 있는 모든 기회를 놓치지 않으려고 최선을 다합니다.

이용자들을 현혹하기 위해 만들어진 게임에 몰두하거나, 심지어 중독되기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 이 게임을 하면서 나는 ‘내 주변의 영적 기회들을 최대한 활용하기 위해 의식적으로 노력하고 있는가?’ 하는 자책감이 들었습니다.

바울은 일상에서 일어나는 하나님의 일에 깨어 있어야 할 필요성을 알고 있었습니다. 골로새서 4장에서 그는 복음을 전할 기회를 열어주시도록 기도를 부탁했습니다(3절). 그러고는 “믿지 않는 사람들을 대할 때는 지혜롭게 행동하고 기회를 최대한 이용하십시오”(5절, 현대인의 성경)라고 도전하였습니다. 바울은 골로새 성도들이 사람들을 그리스도께 인도할 수 있는 어떤 기회도 놓치지 않기를 바랐던 것입니다. 그러나 그렇게 하려면 진심으로 그들의 필요를 돌아보고, “항상 은혜 가운데서”(6절) 그들을 도와야 했습니다.

이 세상에는 게임 속 가상의 용들보다 우리의 시간과 관심을 끄는 것들이 훨씬 더 많이 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 매일의 삶 속에서 하나님께로 향할 기회를 찾으면서 현실 세계의 모험으로 나아가라고 우리를 부르십니다.

EVERY OPPORTUNITY

Ever caught a dragon? I hadn’t until my son convinced me to download a game on my phone. Producing a digital map mirroring the real world, the game allows you to catch colorful creatures near you. Unlike most mobile games, this one requires movement. Anywhere you go is part of the game’s playing field. The result? I’m doing a lot more walking! Anytime my son and I play, we strive to maximize every opportunity to nab the critters that pop up around us.

It’s easy to focus on, even obsess over, a game that’s crafted to captivate users. But as I played the game, I was convicted with this question: Am I this intentional about maximizing the spiritual opportunities around me?

Paul knew the need to be alert to God’s work around us. In Colossians 4, he asked for prayer for an opportunity to share the gospel (V. 3). Then he challenged, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity” (V. 5). Paul didn’t want the Colossians to miss any chance of influencing others toward Christ. But doing so would require truly seeing them and their needs, then engaging in ways “full of grace” (V. 6).

In our world, far more things vie for our time and attention than a game’s imaginary dragons. But God invites us to navigate a real-world adventure, every day seeking opportunities to point to Him. - ADAM HOLZ

모든 것을 아시는 하나님

샴 과에 속하는 싸움 물고기 핀을 2 년 동안 집에서 길렀습니다. 내 어린 딸은 어항에 먹이를 주고 나서 허리를 숙여 그 물고기와 이야기를 나누곤 했습니다. 유치원에서 애완동물 얘기가 나오면 딸아이는 자랑스럽게 그 물고기가 자기 애완동물이라고 말했습니다. 마침내 핀이 죽자 딸아이는 매우 슬퍼했습니다.

어머니는 나에게 딸아이의 마음을 잘 어루만져주고, “하나님이 모든 것을 다 알고 계신다”고 위로해 주라고 했습니다. 하나님이 모든 것을 다 알고 계신다는 것은 나도 알지만, ‘그것이 과연 딸에게 얼마나 위로가 될 수 있을까?’ 의문이 들었습니다. 그때 문득 하나님은 우리 삶 속에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 아실 뿐만 아니라, 긍휼로 우리 마음을 살피시면서 그 일들이 우리에게 어떤 영향을 끼치는지도 알고 계신다는 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님은 “사소한 일”도 우리의 나이나 과거의 상처, 혹은 결핍의 상황에 따라 큰 일로 느껴질 수 있다는 것을 아십니다.

예수님은 한 가난한 과부가 성전의 연보궤에 동전 두 개를 넣었을 때 그 헌신과 그 마음의 진정한 크기를 보셨습니다. 주님은 “이 가난한 과부는 헌금함에 넣는 모든 사람보다 많이 넣었도다...... [이 과부는] 생활비 전부를 넣었느니라”(마가복음 12:43-44)고 말씀하시며 그 동전이 그녀에게 어떤 의미였는지를 설명하셨습니다.

그 과부는 자신의 형편에 대해 아무 말도 하지 않았지만 예수님은 남들이 아주 적은 헌금이라고 생각했던 동전이 그 과부에게는 희생이었다는 것을 아셨습니다. 주님은 우리의 삶도 동일하게 바라보십니다. 주님의 한없는 이해심 가운데 위로를 얻기를 소망합니다.

HE KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT

Finn, a Siamese fighting fish, lived at our house for two years. My young daughter would often bend down to talk with him after dropping food into his tank. When the topic of pets came up in kindergarten, she proudly claimed him as her own. Eventually, Finn passed away, and my daughter was heartbroken.

My mother advised me to listen closely to my daughter’s feelings and tell her, “God knows all about it.” I agreed that God knows everything, yet wondered, How will that be comforting? Then it occurred to me that God isn’t simply aware of the events in our lives—He compassionately sees into our souls and knows how they affect us. He understands that “little things” can feel like big things depending on our age, past wounds, or lack of resources.

Jesus saw the real size of a widow’s gift—and heart—as she dropped two coins into a temple collection box. He described what it meant for her as He said, “This poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. . . . [She put in] all she had to live on” (MARK 12:43–44).

The widow kept quiet about her situation but Jesus recognized that what others considered a tiny donation was a sacrifice to her. He seesour lives in the same way. May we find comfort in His limitless understanding.

함께 나누며 실의를 극복하기

우리는 교통사고로 부인을 잃은 사람과 매번 목요일마다 만났습니다. 그 사람은 가끔 정답이 없는 질문을 하는가 하면, 때로는 다시 경험하고 싶은 추억을 늘어놓기도 했습니다. 시간이 지나면서 그는 그 사고가 우리가 살고 있는 실의에 빠진(타락한) 이 세상 때문에 그렇게 되었지만, 하나님께서는 그 가운데서도 역사하고 계신다는 사실을 받아들이게 되었습니다. 몇 년 후 그는 우리 교회의 성경공부반에서 실의의 고통에 대해, 그리고 어떻게 제대로 슬퍼해야 하는지에 대해 가르쳤습니다. 곧 그는 사람들이 누군가를 잃었을 때 먼저 찾아가서 상의하는 상담자가 되었습니다. 때때로 우리가 하나님께 별로 드릴 것이 없다고 느낄 바로 그때, 하나님은 “우리의 부족함”을 “넘치는 것”으로 만들어 주십니다.

예수님은 제자들에게 사람들에게 먹을 것을 주라고 말씀하셨습니다. 제자들이 나눠줄 것이 아무것도 없다고 하자 예수님은 그들이 가진 얼마 안 되는 먹을 것을 수천 배로 만드신 후 제자들에게 돌아서서 나누어줄 빵을 주셨습니다. 그것은 마치 “내가 말하지 않았느냐. 이제 그들에게 먹을 것을 주어라”고 말씀하시는 것 같았습니다(누가복음 9:13-16). 기적을 행하시는 주님은 종종 그 기적에 우리를 동참시키십니다.

예수님은 우리에게 말씀하십니다. “네 자신과 네가 가지고 있는 것을 내 손에 맡겨라. 너의 실의에 찬 삶. 너의 사정 이야기. 너의 연약함과 실패. 너의 고통과 괴로움을 내 손에 맡겨라. 내가 그것으로 무엇을 할 수 있는지 네가 보고 놀라리라.” 예수님은 우리의 부족함을 넘치게 채우실 수 있습니다. 주님은 우리의 약함을 통해 그분의 강함을 나타내십니다.

BROKEN TO BE SHARED

We met every Thursday after he lost his wife in a car accident. Sometimes he came with questions to which no answers exist; sometimes he came with memories he wanted to relive. Over time, he accepted that even though the accident was a result of the brokenness in our world, God could work in the midst of it. A few years later, he taught a class at our church about grief and how to lament well. Soon, he became our go-to guide for people experiencing loss. Sometimes it’s when we don’t feel like we have anything to offer that God takes our “not enough” and makes it “more than enough.”

Jesus told His disciples to give the people something to eat. They’d protested that there was nothing to give; Jesus multiplied their meager supplies and then turned back to the disciples and gave them the bread, as if to say, “I meant it: You give them something to eat!” (LUKE 9:13–16). Christ will do the miraculous, but He often chooses to involve us.

Jesus says to us, “Place who you are and what you have in My hands. Your broken life. Your story. Your frailty and your failure, your pain and your suffering. Put it in My hands. You’ll be surprised what I can do with it.” Jesus knows that out of our emptiness, He can bring fullness. Out of our weakness, He can reveal His strength. - GLENN PACKIAM
