전기 에너지

한 중고품 가게에서 할인 판매하는 조명등이 색, 크기, 가격 면에서 우리 집 사무실에 딱 맞아 보였습니다. 그런데 집에 가져와 코드를 꽂았을 때 아무 일도 일어나지 않았습니다. 불도 안 들어오고 전원도 없고 아무런 에너지도 없었습니다.

그러나 남편은 아무 문제 없다며 나를 안심시켰습니다. “내가 고칠 수 있어. 진정해.” 조명등을 분해한 남편은 무엇이 문제인지 바로 알아냈습니다. 플러그가 어느 것에도 연결되어 있지 않았던 것입니다. 전원에 연결되지 않는 한 “완벽한” 예쁜 조명등도 아무 쓸모가 없었습니다.

우리도 마찬가지입니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지라 그가 내 안에, 내가 그 안에 거하면 사람이 열매를 많이 맺나니” 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 덧붙여 “나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무것도 할 수 없음이라”(요한복음 15:5)고 상기시켜 주셨습니다.

제자들은 포도를 재배하는 지역에서 그 가르침을 받았기 때문에 그 말을 바로 이해했습니다. 포도나무는 워낙 강한 식물이라 아무리 가지치기를 해도 견딜 수 있습니다. 그러나 생명의 근원으로부터 끊어진 가지들은 쓸모없는 죽은 나무일 뿐입니다. 그것은 우리에게도 마찬가지입니다.

우리가 예수님 안에 거하고 주님의 말씀이 우리 안에 거할 때, 우리는 생명의 근원이신 예수님과 연결됩니다. 예수님은 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 열매를 많이 맺으면 내 아버지께서 영광을 받으실 것이요 너희는 내 제자가 되리라”(8절). 하지만 열매를 맺으려면 날마다 영양분을 공급받아야 합니다. 하나님은 성경말씀과 그분의 사랑으로 값없이 우리에게 그 영양분을 주십니다. 이제 플러그를 꽂고 에너지가 흐르게 하십시오!

FRUIT JUICE

A thrift-store bargain, the lamp seemed perfect for my home office— the right color, size, and price. Back at home, however, when I plugged in the cord, nothing happened. No light. No power. No juice. No problem, my husband assured me. “I can fix that. Easy.” As he took the lamp apart, he saw the trouble immediately. The plug wasn’t connected to anything. Without wiring to a source of power, the “perfect” pretty lamp was useless.

The same is true for us. Jesus told His disciples. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” But then he added this reminder. “Apart from me you can do nothing” (JOHN 15:5).

This teaching was given in a grape-growing region, so His disciples readily understood it. Grapevines are hardy plants, and their branches tolerate vigorous pruning. Cut off from their life source, however, the branches are worthless deadwood. So it is with us.

As we remain in Jesus and let His words dwell in us, we’re wired to our life source—Christ Himself. “This is to my Father’s glory,” said Jesus, “that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (V. 8). Such a fruitful outcome needs daily nourishment, however. Freely, God provides it through the Scriptures and His love. So plug in and let the juice flow! P- ATRICIA RAYBON

예비 나무꾼

대학 시절 어느 해에 나는 장작을 자르고 쌓고 팔고 배달했습니다. 힘든 일이었기 때문에 나는 열왕기하 6장에 나오는 불운한 벌목꾼을 잘 이해합니다.

엘리사의 선지자 학교가 번창 하 여 그들의 모임 장소가 매우 협소해졌습니다. 누군가가 숲에 들어가 통나무를 자르고 시설을 확장하자고 제안했습니다. 엘리사는 동의하고 일꾼들과 함께 갔습니다. 일이 놀랄 만큼 잘 진전되다가 누군가의 쇠도끼가 물에 빠지는 일이 발생했습니다(5절).

몇몇 사람들은 엘리사가 그의 지팡이로 물속을 간단히 저으면서 쇠도끼를 찾아 위로 끌어 올리면 된다고 제안했습니다. 그러나 그 말은 언급할 가치도 없게 되었습니다. 기적이 일어난 것입니다. 그 쇠도끼가 하나님의 손에 의해 움직여서 떠오르기 시작하여 그 사람이 집어 올릴 수 있게 되었습니다(6-7 절).

이 단순한 기적은 심오한 진리를 담고 있습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 삶의 작은 것들, 곧 잃어버린 도끼나 열쇠, 안경, 전화기 등, 우리를 초조하게 만드는 작은 것들까지 관심을 가지신다는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 잃어버린 것을 항상 되찾아 주시지는 않지만, 고통 속에 있는 우리를 이해하고 위로해 주십니다.

구원의 확신 다음으로 하나님의 돌보심에 대한 확신은 필수적입니다. 그것이 없다면, 우리는 수많은 걱정거리들 때문에 이 세상에 혼자 남겨진 것 같이 느끼게 될 것입니다. 아무리 작은 손실이라도 하나님께서 그것을 돌보시고 그것에 마음이 움직이신다는 것을 알 필요가 있습니다. 우리가 염려하는 것을 하나님께서도 염려해 주십니다.

THE WOULD-BE WOODCUTTER

One year when I was in college, I cut, stacked, sold, and delivered firewood. It was a hard job, so I have empathy for the hapless logger in the 2 Kings 6 story.

Elisha’s school for prophets had prospered, and their meeting place had become too small. Someone suggested they go into the woods, cut logs, and enlarge their facilities. Elisha agreed and accompanied the workers. Things were going remarkably well until someone’s axhead fell into the water (V. 5).

Some have suggested that Elisha simply probed in the water with his stick until he located the axhead and dragged it into sight. That would hardly be worth mentioning, however. No, it was a miracle: The axhead was set in motion by God’s hand and began to float so the man could retrieve it (VV. 6–7).

The simple miracle enshrines a profound truth: God cares about the small stuff of life—lost axheads, lost keys, lost glasses, lost phones—the little things that cause us to fret. He doesn’t always restore what’s lost, but He understands and comforts us in our distress.

Next to the assurance of our salvation, the assurance of God’s care is essential. Without it we would feel alone in the world, exposed to innumerable worries. It’s good to know He cares and is moved by our losses— small as they may be. Our concerns are His concerns. - DAVID H. ROPER

귀중한 떠남

보스턴 글로브의 한 기자는 조각가 리즈 셰퍼드의 2018년 전시회 ‘기다림’은 “인생의 귀중하고 숨김없고 초월적인 것을 일깨워준다” 고 묘사하였습니다. 죽음을 앞둔 아버지 옆을 지키며 영감을 받은 셰퍼드는 전시회를 통해 그리움과 상실의 공허함, 그리고 사랑하는 이가 이제 막 곁을 떠나려 할 때 느끼는 연약함을 표현하려고 했습니다.

죽음이 귀중하다는 생각은 얼핏 맞지 않는 것 같지만, 시편 기자는 “그의 경건한 자들의 죽음은 여호와께서 보시기에 귀중한 것이로다”(시편 116:15) 라고 선언하고 있습니다. 하나님은 자기 백성들이 죽을 때 천국에서 그들을 환영하시기 때문에 그들의 죽음을 귀하게 여기십니다.

누가 하나님의 경건한 종(성도)입니까? 시편 기자에 따르면 그들은 하나님의 구원에 감사하여 하나님을 섬기는 자들이며, 하나님의 이름을 부르는 자들, 그리고 하나님 앞에서 말씀을 경외함으로 하나님께 아뢰는 자들입니다 (시편 116:16-18). 그런 행동들은 하나님과 동행하며, 그분이 주시는 자유를 받아들이고, 그분과의 관계를 키워나가겠다는 신중한 선택을 보여주는 것들입니다.

그런 일들을 할 때 우리는 우리 자신이 “하나님께는 택하심을 입은 보배로운” 예수님의 동반자임을 알게 됩니다. “성경에 기록되었으되 보라 내가 택한 보배로운 모퉁잇돌을 시온에 두노니 그를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라”(베드로전서 2:4-6). 우리가 하나님을 믿을 때, 이 땅에서의 삶을 떠나는 것은 하나님 보시기에 귀중한 것입니다.

PRECIOUS DEPARTURE

Sculptor Liz Shepherd’s 2018 exhibition The Wait was described by a Boston Globe correspondent as “evok[ing] the precious, exposed, and transcendent in life.” Inspired by the time Shepherd spent at her dying father’s bedside, the exhibition attempts to convey yearning,
the emptiness of loss, and the fragile sense that loved ones are just out of reach.

The idea that death is precious might seem counterintuitive; however, the psalmist declares, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants” (PSALM 116:15). God treasures the death of His people, for in their passing He welcomes them home.

Who are these faithful servants (“saints” nkjv) of God? According to the psalmist, they are those who serve God in gratitude for His deliverance, who call on His name, and who honor the words they speak before Him (PSALM 116:16–18). Such actions represent deliberate choices to walk with God, accept the freedom He offers, and cultivate a relationship with Him.

In so doing, we find ourselves in the company of Jesus, who is “chosen by God and precious to him . . . . For in Scripture it says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame’ ” (1 PETER 2:4–6). When our trust is in God, our departure from this life is precious in His sight. - REMI OYEDELE

구원을 보게 됨

쉰 셋의 나이에 소냐가 마지막으로 기대한 것은 자신의 사업과 나라를 버 리고 새 로운 땅으로 떠 나는 망 명 신 청자들과 합류하는 것이었습니다. 갱단이 그의 조카를 살해하고 열일곱 살 난 아들을 그 갱단에 강제로 끌어들이려 하자, 소냐는 탈출하는 것이 유일한 선택이라고 느꼈습니다. 소냐는 말했습니다. “하나님께 기도합니다...... 필요하다면 뭐라도 하겠습니다. [아들과 내가] 굶어 죽지 않기 위해 어떤 일이든 하겠습니다...... 아들이 가방 속이나 수로에서 죽는 것보다 차라리 여기서 고생하는 게 낫겠습니다.”

성경은 소냐 모자에게, 혹은 불의나 재난을 겪은 많은 사람들에게 어떤 말을 하고 있습니까? 세례 요한이 예수님의 오심을 선포할 때, 그는 소냐와 우리에게, 그리고 이 세상에 좋은 소식을 전해주었습니다. 요한은 “주의 길을 준비하라”고 외치며(누가복음 3:4), 예수님이 오시면 하나님께서 권능으로 완벽하게 구조하실 거라고 주장했습니다. 성경은 이 구조를 ‘구원’ 이라고 부릅니다.

SEEING SALVATION

At fifty-three, the last thing Sonia expected to do was abandon her business and her country to join a group of asylum seekers journeying to a new land. After gangs murdered her nephew and tried to force her seventeen-year-old son into their ranks, Sonia felt escape was
her only option. “I pray to God. . . . I will do whatever is necessary,” Sonia explained. “I will do anything so [my son and I] don’t die of hunger. . . I prefer to see him suffer here than end up in a bag or canal.”

Does the Bible have anything to say to Sonia and her son—or to so many who have suffered injustice and devastation? When John the Baptist proclaimed the arrival of Jesus, he announced good news to Sonia, to us, to the world. “Prepare the way for the Lord,” John proclaimed (LUKE 3:4). He insisted that when Jesus arrived, God would enact a powerful, comprehensive rescue. The biblical word for this rescue is salvation.

Salvation encompasses both the healing of our sinful hearts and—one day—the healing of all the world’s evils. God’s transforming work is for every story, every human system, and is available to everyone. “All people will see God’s salvation,” John said (V. 6).

Whatever evil we face, Christ’s cross and resurrection assure us we’ll see God’s salvation. One day we’ll experience His final liberation. - WINN COLLIER

다시......기도할 시간

나는 내 이웃인 미리암과 그의 작은 딸 엘리자베스를 향해 손을 흔들며 우리 집 차도에 들어섰습니다. 해를 거듭하면서 엘리자베스는 “몇 분”간 하기로 했던 것보다 더 길어지다가 어느새 기도 모임으로 자연스럽게 바뀌어버리는 우리의 대화에 익숙해져 갔습니다. 내가 미리암과 이야기하는 동안 아이는 자기 집 앞마당 가운데에 있는 나무를 타고 올라가 나뭇가지 위에 다리를 걸치고 매달려 몸을 이리저리 움직였습니다. 얼마 후 엘리자베스는 그 가지에서 뛰어내려 우리가 서 있는 곳으로 달려왔습니다. 그러고는 우리의 손을 잡고 웃으며 “다시......기도할 시간이에요.”라고 노래하듯이 말했습니다. 어린 나이에도 엘리자베스는 우리의 우정에 기도가 얼마나 중요한지 이해하는 것 같았습니다.

바울 사도는 신자들에게 “주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여지라” (에베소서 6:10)고 격려한 후, 지속적인 기도의 중요한 역할에 대 해 각 별한 통찰력을 보여주었습니다. 그는 하나님의 사람들이 진리 안에서 보호와 분별, 확신을 주시는 주님과 함께 영적으로 동행할 때 필요한 갑옷에 대해 묘사하고 있습니다(11-17절). 하지만 바울 사도는 이 하나님이 주시는 힘은 생명을 주는 선물인 기도에 의도적으로 몰두함으로써 자라난다고 강조했습니다(18-20절).

IT’S TIME TO PRAY . . . AGAIN

I pulled into my driveway, waving at my neighbor Myriam and her little girl Elizabeth. Over the years, Elizabeth had grown accustomed to our spontaneous chats lasting longer than the promised “few minutes” and morphing into prayer meetings. She climbed the tree planted in the center of their front yard, dangled her legs over a branch, and busied herself while her mother and I spoke. After a while, Elizabeth hopped down from her roost and ran to where we stood. Grabbing our hands, she smiled and almost sang, “It’s time to pray . . . again.” Even at an early age, Elizabeth seemed to understand how important prayer was in our friendship.

After encouraging believers to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” (EPHESIANS 6:10), the apostle Paul offered special insight on the crucial role of continual prayer. He described the necessary armor God’s people would need during their spiritual walk with the
Lord, who provides protection, discernment, and confidence in His truth (VV. 11–17). However, the apostle emphasized this God-given strength grew from deliberate immersion in the life-giving gift of prayer (VV. 18–20).

God hears and cares about our concerns, whether they’re spoken boldly, sobbed silently, or secured deep in a hurting heart. He’s always ready to make us strong in His power, as He invites us to pray again and again and again. - XOCHITL DIXON

실패를 알리는 종

잭슨은 어린 시절부터 미 해군 특수부대원이 되는 꿈을 안고 오랫 동안 육체적으로 단련하고 절제하는 삶을 살았습니다. 마침내 그는 훈련병들이 “지옥의 한 주”라고 부르는 것을 포함한 혹독한 근력과 지구력 테스트를 치르게 되었습니다.

그러나 잭슨은 육체적으로 더 이상 그 힘든 훈련을 감당할 수 없어서 마지못해 종을 울려 지휘관과 다른 훈련병들에게 훈련프로그램을 그만두겠다는 것을 알렸습니다. 대부분의 경우 이것은 실패처럼 느껴질 것입니다. 하지만 극도로 실망했음에도 불구하고 잭슨은 나중에 그의 군 생활 실패를 자신의 평생 직업의 준비과정으로 여길 수 있었습니다.

THE BELL

Jackson dreamed of becoming a US Navy Seal from early childhood— an ambition that led to years of physical discipline and self-sacrifice. He eventually faced grueling tests of strength and endurance including what’s referred to by trainees as “hell week.”

Jackson was physically unable to complete the exhaustive training, and reluctantly rang a bell to inform the commander and other trainees of his choice to leave the program. For most, this would feel like failure. But in spite of the extreme disappointment, Jackson was later able to see his military failure as preparation for his life’s work.

The apostle Peter experienced his own form of failure. He boldly proclaimed that he would remain loyal to Jesus even to prison or death (LUKE 22:33). Yet later he wept bitterly after he denied that he knew Jesus (VV. 60–62). But God had plans beyond his failure. Prior to Peter’s denial, Jesus informed him, “I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (MATTHEW 16:18; SEE ALSO LUKE 22:31–32).

재회의 기쁨

어린 소년은 신이 나서 군인인 아빠가 보낸 커다란 상자를 뜯었습니다. 아이는 아빠가 자기 생일을 축하하기 위해 집에 오지 못할 거라고 생각했었습니다. 그 상자 안에는 또 다른 선물 포장된 상자가 들어 있었습니다. 그리고 그 상자 안에는 또 다른 상자가 들어 있었는데, 그 속에는 “놀랐지!”라고 적힌 종이 한 장만 달랑 들어 있었습니다. 당황한 아이가 고개를 들자 바로 그때 아빠가 방으로 들어왔습니다. 아들은 눈물을 흘리며 아빠 품으로 뛰어들며 “아빠, 보고 싶었어. 사랑해.”라고 소리질렀습니다.

그들의 눈물겹고도 기쁜 만남은 하나님의 자녀가 완전히 새롭고 회복된 모습으로 사랑하는 아버지를 마주할 영광스러운 순간을 묘사하는 요한계시록 21장의 진수를 생각나게 해줍니다. 그때 거기에서 “[하나님은] 모든 눈물을 [우리] 눈에서 닦아주실” 것입니다. 우리가 하나님 아버지와 함께 있을 것이기에 더 이상 고통이나 슬픔을 겪지 않을 것입니다. 요한계시록 21장의 “큰 음성”은 이렇게 선포합니다. “보라 하나님의 장막이 사람들과 함께 있으매 하나님이 그들과 함께 계시리니”(3-4절).

베드로전서 1장 8절에서 “예수를 너희가 보지 못하였으나 사랑하는도다 이제도 보지 못하나 믿고 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 기뻐하니”라고 말하고 있는 것처럼, 예수님을 따르는 사람들은 이미 하나님과 함께 그분의 부드러운 사랑과 기쁨을 누리고 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 사랑하고 두 팔 벌려 우리를 반겨주길 바랐던 그분을 직접 대할 때 우리의 기쁨이 얼마나 믿기지 않을 만큼 차고 넘칠지 상상해 보십시오.

REUNION

The little boy excitedly ripped open a big box from his serviceman daddy, whom he believed wouldn’t be home to celebrate his birthday. Inside that box was yet another giftwrapped box, and inside that box was another that simply held a piece of paper saying, “Surprise!” Confused, the boy looked up—just as his dad entered the room. Tearfully the son leapt into his father’s arms, exclaiming, “Daddy, I missed you” and “I love you!”

That tearful yet joyful reunion captures for me the heart of Revelation 21’s description of the glorious moment when God’s children see their loving Father face to face—in the fully renewed and restored creation. There, “[God] will wipe every tear from [our] eyes.” No longer will we experience pain or sorrow, because we’ll be with our heavenly Father. As the “loud voice” in Revelation 21 declares, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them” (VV. 3–4).

There’s a tender love and joy that followers of Jesus already enjoy with God, as 1 Peter 1:8 describes: “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.” Yet imagine our incredible, overflowing joy when we see the one we’ve loved and longed for welcoming us into His open arms! - ALYSON KIEDA

절망을 찍은 사진

미국의 대공황 기간 동안 유명한 사진작가 도로시아 랭은 플로랜스 오웬스 톰슨과 그 여인의 아이들 사진을 찍었습니다. ‘이주자 어머니’ 라는 제목으로 잘 알려진 이 사진에는 완두콩 수확에 실패한 여파로 절망하는 어머니의 모습이 담겨 있습니다. 랭은 캘리포니아 니포모에서 농장 안보청의 직원으로 일하면서 안보청 사람들에게 수확 계절 농장에서 일하는 임시고용 노동자들의 절박함을 알리려고 그 사진을 찍었습니다.

절망에 빠져 있습니까? 잠잠히 있지 말고 하나님께 부르짖으십시오. 하나님은 들으시고 당신이 소망을 찾기를 기다리십니다. 하나님은 반드시 우리를 어려운 상황에서 벗어나게 하시지는 않지만, 언제나 우리와 함께 하시겠다고 약속하십니다.

THE PICTURE OF DESPAIR

During the Great Depression in the United States, famed photographer Dorothea Lange snapped a photo of Florence Owens Thompson and her children. This well-known photograph, Migrant Mother, is the picture of a mother’s despair in the aftermath of the failed pea harvest. Lange took it in Nipomo, California, while working for the Farm Security Administration, hoping to make them aware of the needs of the desperate seasonal farm laborers.

The book of Lamentations presents another snapshot of despair—that of Judah in the wake of the destruction of Jerusalem. Before the army of Nebuchadnezzar swept in to destroy the city, the people had suffered from starvation thanks to a siege (2 KINGS 24:10–11). Though their turmoil was the result of years of disobedience to God, the writer of Lamentations cried out to God on behalf of his people (LAMENTATIONS 2:11–12).

While the author of Psalm 107 also describes a desperate time in Israel’s history (during Israel’s wanderings in the wilderness, vv. 4–5), the focus shifts to an action step to be taken in hard times: “Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble” (V. 6). And what a wonderful result: “he delivered them from their distress.”

In despair? Don’t stay silent. Cry out to God. He hears and waits to restore your hope. Though He doesn’t always take us out of hard situations, He promises to be with us always. - LINDA WASHINGTON

바다갈매기 처피

바다갈매기 처피는 부러진 다리가 낫도록 도와준 남자를 12년 동안 매일 찾아왔습니다. 존은 개 먹이용 비스킷으로 처피를 유인한 후 그가 건강을 되찾도록 간호할 수 있었습니다. 처피는 9월에서 3월 사이에 영국 데본의 인스타우 해변에만 거주하는데, 그와 존 섬너는 서로를 쉽게 찾습니다. 매일 존이 해변에 나가면 처피는 다른 사람에게는 가지 않고 바로 그에게 날아옵니다. 확실히 흔치 않은 관계입니다.

존과 처피의 유대관계를 보며 나는 또 다른 흔치 않은 인간과 새의 관계를 떠올렸습니다. 하나님의 선지자 엘리야가 가뭄 때 “그릿 시냇가에 숨으려고” 광야로 갔을 때, 하나님은 그에게 시냇물을 마시라고 하시며 까마귀를 보내어 먹을 것을 주겠다고 하셨습니다(열왕기상 17:3-4). 어려운 상황과 환경에도 불구하고 엘리야는 필요한 음식과 물을 얻을 수 있었습니다. 까마귀는 원래 이상한 먹이를 먹기 때문에 사람이 먹을 것을 가져다줄 것 같아 보이지 않지만, 엘리야에게 건강한 음식을 가져다 주었습니다.

사람이 새를 돕는 것은 놀라운 일이 아닐지 모르지만, 새들이 “아침에도 떡과 고기, 저녁에도 떡과 고기”를 공급했다면 그것은 오직 하나님의 권능과 보살핌으로만 설명될 수 있습니다(6절). 하나님께서 엘리야처럼 우리도 공급해 주실 줄 믿습니다.

CHIRPY

For twelve years, Chirpy, a seagull, has made daily visits to a man who’d helped him heal from a broken leg. John wooed Chirpy to himself with dog biscuits and was then able to nurse him back to health. Though Chirpy only resides in Instow Beach in Devon, England, between September and March, he and John Sumner find each other easily—Chirpy flies straight to him when he arrives at the beach each day, though he doesn’t approach any other human. It’s an uncommon relationship, to be sure.

John and Chirpy’s bond reminds me of another uncommon relationship between man and bird. When Elijah, one of God’s prophets, was sent into the wilderness to “hide in the Kerith Ravine” during a time of drought, God said he was to drink from the brook, and He’d send ravens to supply him with food (1 KINGS 17:3–4). Despite the difficult circumstances and surroundings, Elijah would have his needs for food and water met. Ravens were unlikely caterers—naturally feeding on unseemly meals themselves—yet they brought Elijah wholesome food.

It may not surprise us that a man would help a bird, but when birds provide for a man with “bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening,” it can only be explained by God’s power and care (V. 6). Like Elijah, we too can trust in His provision for us. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

느리게 움직이는 이유

영국 BBC방송의 비디오 시리즈 ‘포유류의 삶’에서 진행자 데이비드 애튼버러는 나무에 올라가 세발가락 나무늘보를 익살맞게 바라봅니다. 세계에서 가장 느리게 움직이는 포유류를 마주한 그는 “부!” 하고 인사를 합니다. 그러나 나무늘보의 반응을 얻는 데 실패하자, 그는 우리도 만약 세발가락 나무늘보처럼 소화가 잘 안 되고 영양가가 낮은 잎을 주식으로 먹고 산다면 천천히 움직일 것이라고 설명합니다.

느헤미야도 이스라엘 역사를 되돌아보면서 느리게 가는 또 다른 예와 그 이유를 상기시켜 주는데(9:9-21), 이 이야기는 전혀 우습지 않습니다. 느헤미야에 따르면 우리 하나님은 분노에 대해 느리게 반응하는 최고의 본보기입니다. 느헤미야는 하나님께서 자기 백성을 어떻게 보살펴 주셨는지 열거합니다. 먼저 그들을 생명을 주는 율법으로 지도하셨고, 출애굽 여정에서 그들을 보호하셨으며, 그들에게 약속의 땅을 허락하셨습니다 (9-15절). 이스라엘은 끊임없이 반역했지만(16절), 하나님은 결코 그들을 향한 사랑을 멈추지 않으셨습니다. 그것에 대해 느헤미야는 우리의 창조주 하나님은 본질적으로 “은혜로우시며 긍휼히 여기시며 더디 노하시며 인자가 풍부하시다”(17절)고 설명합니다. 왜 하나님은 40년 동안 자기 백성들의 불평과 불신과 의심을 그렇게 오래 참으셨을까요?(21절). 그것은 하나님의 “크신 긍휼”(19절) 때문이었습니다.

SLOW FOR A REASON

In the BBC video series The Life of Mammals, host David Attenborough climbs a tree to take a humorous look at a three-toed sloth. Getting face to face with the world’s slowest moving mammal, he greets it with a “boo!” Failing to get a reaction, he explains that going slow is what you do if you are a three-toed sloth living primarily on leaves that are not easily digested and not very nutritious.

In a rehearsal of Israel’s history, Nehemiah reminds us of another example and explanation for going slow (9:9–21), but this one isn’t comical. According to Nehemiah, our God is the ultimate example of going slow—when it comes to anger. Nehemiah recounted how God cared for His people, instructing them with life-giving laws, sustaining them on their journey out of Egypt and providing them with the Promised Land (VV. 9–15). Although Israel constantly rebelled (V. 16), God never stopped loving them. Nehemiah’s explanation? Our Creator is by nature “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love” (V. 17). Why else would He have borne so patiently His people’s complaints, disbelief, and distrust for forty years? (V. 21). It was because of God’s “great compassion” (V. 19).

What about us? A hot temper signals a cold heart. But the greatness of God’s heart gives us room to patiently live and love with Him. - MART DEHAAN
