대화 테이블

우리의 행복을 위협하는 가장 큰 요소 중 하나인 외로움은 소셜미디어나 음식 소비 등의 우리의 행동을 통해 우리의 건강에도 영향을 미칩니다. 한 연구결과에 따르면 나이와 성별에 상관없이 사람들의 거의 삼분의 이 정도가 적어도 얼마 동안은 외로움을 느낀다고 합니다. 영국의 어느 수퍼마켓은 사람들이 잘 어울릴 수 있도록 하는 한 방편으로 카페 안에 “대화 테이블”을 만들었습니다. 남들과 어울리고 싶은 사람들은 그런 목적을 위한 자리라고 명시된 테이블에 앉아 남들과 함께 하거나, 함께 하길 원한다는 의사를 표시합니다. 그러면 대화가 계속 이어지면서 자연스럽게 서로 알게 되고 공동체 의식도 생기게 됩니다. 초대교회의 사람들도 서로 유대를 나누는 일에 힘썼습니다. 그렇게 함께하지 않았더라면, 그들은 아직까지 세상에서 생소했던 자신들의 믿음을 지키는데 매우 외로움을 느꼈을 것입니다. 그들은 예수님을 따른다는 의미를 알기 위해 “사도의 가르침을 받는데 [헌신했을]” 뿐 아니라, “성전에 모이기를
힘쓰고 집에서 떡을 떼며” 서로 격려하고 교제를 나누었습니다(사도행전 2:42, 46). 우리는 사람들과의 연계가 필요합니다. 하나님이 우리를 그렇게 창조 하셨기 때문입니다! 외로움으로 힘든 시절을 보내게 되면 그런 필요성을 더 느끼게 됩니다. 초대교회 사람들처럼 우리도 행복을 위해 사람들과 어울리면서 우리 주위의 외로운 사람들과도 친교를 갖는 것이 중요합니다.

TALKING TABLES

Loneliness is one of the greatest threats to our sense of well-being, affecting our health through our behaviors on social media, food consumption, and the like. One study suggests that nearly twothirds of all people—regardless of age or gender—feel lonely at least some of the time. One British supermarket has created “talking tables” in their store cafés as a way to foster connection between people. Those looking for human interaction simply seat themselves at a table designated for that purpose, joining others or indicating a desire to be joined. Conversation ensues, providing a sense of connection and community. The people of the early church were committed to shared connection too. Without each other, they would likely have felt very alone in the practice of their faith, which was still new to the world. Not only did they “[devote] themselves to the apostles’ teaching” to learn what following
Jesus meant, they also “[met] together in the temple courts” and “broke bread in their homes” for mutual encouragement and fellowship (ACTS 2:42, 46). We need human connection; God designed us that way! Painful seasons of loneliness point to that need. Like the people of the early church, it’s important for us to engage in the human companionship our wellbeing requires and to offer it to those around us who also need it. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

등불을 지키는 자들

사람들은 그들을 “등불을 지키는 자들”이라고 부릅니다. 미국 노스캐롤라이나주 해안가에서 약간 떨어진 해트라스 섬의 곶에 있는 등대에는 1803년부터 그곳 등대를 보살펴 온 사람들을 기리는 기념비가 있습니다. 해안선 침식 때문에 기존 구조물이 내륙으로 옮겨진 후 얼마 안 되어, 오래된 주춧돌에 등대지기들의 이름이 새겨졌고 새로운 장소를 바라보며 원형극장 모양으로 배치되었습니다. 현수막에서 설명하는 것처럼, 그렇게 하여 오늘날의 방문객들은 지금까지 있었던 등대지기들의 발자취를 따라가서 그 등대도 “지켜볼” 수 있게 되었습니다.
예수님은 궁극적으로 빛을 주시는 분입니다. 주님은 “나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”(요한복음 8:12)고 말씀하셨습니다. 다른 사람이 그랬다면 그것은 과격한 발언입니다. 그러나 예수님은 그렇게 말씀하심으로써 빛과 생명의 창조주이시며 예수님을 보내신 하늘에 계신 아버지와 자신과의 관계를 확인시켜 주셨습니다. 우리가 구원받기 위해 예수님을 바라보고 주님의 가르침을 따를 때, 우리와 하나님과의 관계가 회복되고 하나님은 우리에게 새 힘과 삶의 목적을 주십니다. “인류의 빛”(1:4, 현대인의 성경)이신 예수님의 변화시키는 삶과 사랑이 우리 안에서 빛을 발하고 우리를 통해 어둡고 때로는 위험한 이 세상을 비춰 주십니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리는 “등불을 지키는 자들”입니다. 사람들이 예수님의 빛이 우리로부터 비취는 것을 보고, 예수님만이 주실 수 있는 생명과 소망을 찾게 되기를 소원합니다!

KEEPERS OF THE LIGHT

They call them “Keepers of the Light.” At the lighthouse on the cape of Hatteras Island just off the North Carolina coast of the United States, there’s a memorial to those who’ve tended the light stations there since 1803. Shortly after the existing structure was moved inland because of shoreline erosion, the names of the keepers were etched on the old foundation stones and arranged into an amphitheater shape facing the new site. That way—as a placard explains—today’s visitors can follow in the historical keepers’ footsteps and “watch over” the lighthouse as well. Jesus is the ultimate light-giver. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (JOHN 8:12). That’s a radical thing for anyone to claim. But Jesus said it to affirm His relationship with His heavenly Father, the Creator of light and life who sent Him. When we look to Jesus for salvation and follow His teaching, we’re restored in relationship with God, and He gives us new power and purpose. His transforming life and love—“the light of all mankind” (1:4)—shines in us and through us and out to a dark and sometimes dangerous world. As believers in Jesus, we become “keepers of the light.” May others see His light shine from us and discover the life and hope He alone can give! JAMES BANKS

눈물을 하나님 앞으로 가져가라

지난 여름, 탈레콰라는 이름의 범고래가 새끼를 낳았습니다. 육식 고래인 탈레콰의 무리는 멸종위기에 처해 있었는데, 새로 태어난 새끼 고래는 그들의 미래의 희망이었습니다. 그러나 그 새끼 고래는 한 시간도 채 살지 못했습니다. 전 세계 사람들이 그 슬퍼하는 모습을 지켜보는 가운데, 탈레콰는 죽은 새끼를 17일 동안 태평양의 차가운 물 속에서 밀고 다니다가 마침내 떠나보냈습니다. 때때로 예수 믿는 신자들도 슬픔으로 어찌해야 할 지 모를 때가 있습니다. 우리가 슬퍼하면 마치 소망이 없는 것처럼 비춰질까 봐 두려워서 그런 것인지도 모릅니다. 그러나 성경은 비통 속에서 하나님께 부르짖는 많은 사람들의 예를 보여줍니다. 탄식과 소망은 둘 다 믿음을 보여주는 반응들입니다. 예레미야 애가는 나라를 잃은 사람들의 슬픔을 표현한 다섯 편의 시를 모은 책입니다. 그들은 적에게 쫓기다 거의 죽음의 문턱까지 갔고(3:52-54), 울면서 하나님께 공의를 행하시기를 구했습니다(64절). 그들은 소망을 잃었기 때문이 아니라 하나님이 듣고 계시다고 믿기 때문에 부르짖습니다. 그리고 그들이 애절하게 찾을 때 하나님이 가까이 다가오십니다(57절). 우리 세상이나 개인의 삶에서 깨어진 일들을 탄식하는 것은 잘못이 아닙니다. 하나님은 항상 듣고 계십니다. 하나님께서 천국에서 내려다보시며 우리를 보고 계심을 확실히 믿으십시오.

TAKE YOUR TEARS TO GOD

Last summer, an orca named Talequah gave birth. Talequah’s pod of killer whales was endangered, and her newborn was their hope for the future. But the calf lived for less than an hour. In a show of grief that was watched by people around the world, Talequah pushed her dead calf through the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean for seventeen days before letting her go. Sometimes believers in Jesus have a hard time knowing what to do with grief. Perhaps we fear that our sorrow might look like a lack of hope. But the Bible gives us many examples of humans crying out to God in grief. Lament and hope can both be part of a faithful response. Lamentations is a book of five poems that express the sorrow of people who have lost their home. They’ve been hunted by enemies and were near death (3:52–54), and they weep and call on God to bring justice (V. 64). They cry out to God not because they have lost hope, but because they believe God is listening. And when they call, God does come near (V. 57). It’s not wrong to lament the broken things in our world or in your life. God is always listening, and you can be sure that God will look down from heaven and see you. AMY PETERSON

나이프 엔젤

칼을 사용한 범죄가 영국 전역에 만연했을 때, 영국의 철강산업 센터가 한 아이디어를 내놓았습니다. 센터가 지역 경찰들과 협력하여 전국에 200개의 수거함을 설치해 놓고 무기 자진 신고 캠페인을 벌인 것입니다. 십만여 개의 칼이 누가 버렸는지 모르게 거두어졌는데, 칼날에 아직도 피가 묻어 있는 칼들도 있었습니다. 그 칼들은 예술가 알피 브래들리에게 보내어져서, 무디게 만들고 어떤 칼들에는 범죄로 희생된 어린아이들의 이름과 범죄자들의 반성 메시지가 새겨졌습니다. 그런 다음 십만 개의 무기들을 함께 붙여 희미하게 반짝이는 강철 날개를 가진 27피트 (약 8미터) 높이의 천사 모양의 조소 작품 ‘나이프 엔젤’을 만들었습니다. ‘나이프 엔젤’ 앞에 섰을 때, 나는 많은 칼로 그 작품을 만듦으로써 칼로 인한 상처들이 얼마나 많이 방지되었을까를 생각해 보았습니다. 그리고 아이들이 어려서 죽지 않고(20절) 범죄가 번식하는 빈곤 속에서 자 라지 않는 (22-23절) 곳, 모든 칼들이 다시 빚어져 보다 창조적인 목적을 위해 쓰임으로(2:4) 칼을 사용한 범죄가 더 이상 없는 곳인, 이사야가 환상으로 보았던 새 하늘과 새 땅(이사야 65:17)에 대해서도 생각해 보았습니다. 새로운 세상은 이 땅에 아직 오지 않았지만, 우리는 그 세상이 올 때까지 기도하고 섬겨야 합니다(마태복음 6:10). ‘나이프 엔젤’은 그 나름대로 하나님께서 약속하신 미래의 그림을 보여주고 있습니다. 칼이 쟁기가 되고, 무기가 예술품이 됩니다. 그 미래의 모습을 좀 더 그려보기 위해 우리는 어떤 또 다른 구속 프로젝트를 시도해 볼 수 있을까요?

THE KNIFE ANGEL

When knife crime rose across the United Kingdom, the British Ironwork Centre came up with an idea. Working with local police forces, the Centre built and placed two hundred deposit
boxes around the country and ran an amnesty campaign. One hundred thousand knives were anonymously surrendered, some still with blood on their blades. These were then shipped to artist Alfie Bradley, who blunted them, inscribed some with the names of young knife-crime victims, plus messages of regret from ex-offenders. All 100,000 weapons
were then welded together to create the Knife Angel—a twenty-sevenfoot- high angelic sculpture with shimmering steel wings. When I stood before the Knife Angel, I wondered how many thousands of wounds had been prevented by its existence. I thought too of Isaiah’s vision of the new heavens and earth (ISAIAH 65:17), a place where children won’t die young (V. 20) or grow up in crime-breeding poverty (VV. 22–23), a place where knife crime is no more because all swords have been reshaped and given more creative purposes (2:4).
That new world isn’t yet here, but we are to pray and serve until its arrival (MATTHEW 6:10). In its own way, the Knife Angel gives us a glimpse of God’s promised future. Swords become plow shares. Weapons become artworks. What other redemptive projects can we conjure up to glimpse that future a little more? SHERIDAN VOYSEY

THE SMILING JESUS

If you were to play the part of Jesus in a movie, how would you approach the role? That was the challenge faced by Bruce Marchiano, who played Jesus in the 1993 Visual Bible movie Matthew. Knowing that millions of viewers would draw conclusions about Jesus based on his work, the weight of getting Christ “right” felt overwhelming. He fell to his knees in prayer and begged Jesus for—well, for Jesus. Bruce gained insight from the first chapter of Hebrews, where the writer tells us how God the Father set the Son apart by anointing Him
“with the oil of joy” (1:9). This kind of joy is one of celebration—a gladness of connection to the Father expressed wholeheartedly. Such joy ruled in Jesus’ heart throughout His life. As Hebrews 12:2 describes it, “For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Taking his cue from this scriptural expression, Bruce offered a uniquely joy-filled portrayal of his Savior. As a result, he became known as “the smiling Jesus.” We too can dare to fall to our knees and “beg
Jesus for Jesus.” May He so fill us with His character that people around us see the expression of His love in us! ELISA MORGAN

우리는 휴대전화나 등반 지도도 없이 트레일러 앞에 붙어 있던 지도의 기억만 의지하여 앞으로 나아갔습니다. 한 시간도 더 지나서야 마침내 우리는 숲을 벗어나 주차장으로 들어섰습니다. 반 마일(800미터) 정도의 등산길인데 갈림길을 잘못 들어서서 훨씬 긴 등산을 하게 되었던 것입니다. 인생도 그와 같습니다. 우리는 어떤 것이 옳고 그른지 뿐만 아니라, 그것이
어디로 이끌어가는지를 물어야 합니다. 시편 1편에서는 두 종류의 삶, 곧 의인 (하나님을 사랑하는 사람)의 삶과 악인(하나님을 사랑하는 사람들의 대적)의 삶을 비교하고 있습니다. 의인은 나무처럼 형통하지만 악인은 바람에 나는 겨와 같습니다(3-4절). 이 시편은 형통한 것이 실제로 어떤 모습인지를 보여줍니다. 그런 삶을 살아가는 사람은 새롭게 되기 위해, 삶을 위해 하나님을 의지하고 살아갑니다. 그러면 어떻게 그런 사람이 될 수 있을까요? 시편 1편은 여러 가지 예 가운데서도 파멸로 이끄는 관계나 불건전한 습관에서 벗어나 하나님의

WHERE CHOICES LEAD

With no cell service and no trail map, we had just our memory of a fixed map at the trailhead to guide us. More than an hour later, we finally emerged from the woods into the parking lot. Having missed the turn-off that would have made for a half-mile hike, we took a much longer trek. Life can be like that: we have to ask not simply if something is right
or wrong, but where it will lead. Psalm 1 compares two ways of living— that of the righteous (those who love God) and that of the wicked (the enemies of those who love God). The righteous flourish like a tree, but the wicked blow away like chaff (VV. 3–4). This psalm reveals what flourishing really looks like. The person who lives it out is dependent on God
for renewal and life. So how do we become that kind of person? Among other things, Psalm 1 urges us to disengage from destructive relationships and unhealthy habits and to delight in God’s instruction (V. 2). Ultimately, the reason for our flourishing is God’s attentiveness to us: “The Lord watches over the way of the righteous” (V. 6). Commit your way to God, let Him redirect you from old patterns that lead to nowhere, and allow the Scriptures to be the river that nourishes the root system of your heart. GLENN PACKIAM

THE GIFT OF PEACE

“I believe in Jesus and He is my Savior, and I have no fear of death,” said Barbara Bush, the wife of former US President George H. W. Bush, to her son before she died. This incredible and confident statement suggests a strong and deep-rooted faith. She experienced God’s gift of peace that comes from knowing Jesus, even when faced with death.
Simeon, a resident of Jerusalem during the first century, also experienced profound peace because of Jesus. Moved by the Holy Spirit, Simeon went to the temple when Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to be circumcised as required by the law for a newborn boy. Although not much is known about Simeon, from Luke’s description one can tell he was a special man of God, just and devout, waiting faithfully for the coming Messiah, and “the Holy Spirit was on him” (LUKE 2:25). Yet Simeon did not experience shalom (peace), a deep sense of completeness, until he saw Jesus. While holding Jesus in his arms, Simeon broke into a song of praise, expressing full satisfaction in God: “You may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations” (VV. 29–31). He had peace because he foresaw the future hope of the whole world. As we celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the promised Savior, may we rejoice in God’s gift of peace. ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

In God’s timing, our son Kofi was born on a Friday, which is exactly what his name means—boy born on Friday. We named him after a Ghanaian friend of ours, a pastor whose only son died. He prays for our Kofi constantly. We’re deeply honored. It’s easy to miss the significance in a name if you don’t know the story behind it. In Luke 3, we find a fascinating detail about a name in the ancestry of Joseph. The genealogy traces Joseph’s line backward all the way to Adam and even to God (V. 38). In verse 31 we read: “the son of
Nathan, the son of David.” Nathan? That’s interesting. In 1 Chronicles 3:5 we learn that Nathan was born to Bathsheba. Is it coincidence that David named Bathsheba’s child Nathan? Recall the backstory. Bathsheba was never supposed to be David’s wife. Another Nathan—the prophet—bravely confronted the king for abusing his authority to exploit Bathsheba and murder her husband (SEE 2 SAMUEL 12). David accepted the prophet’s point-blank rebuke and repented of his horrific offenses. With the healing passage of time, he would name his
son Nathan. How appropriate that this was Bathsheba’s son, and that he would be one of the ancestors of Joseph, Jesus’ earthly dad (LUKE 3:23). In the Bible, we keep finding God’s grace woven into everything— even into an obscure name in a seldom-read genealogy. God’s grace is everywhere. TIM GUSTAFSON

이야기를 들려주세요

‘옛날 옛적에.’ 이 말은 온 세상에서 가장 강력한 힘을 가진 말일 것입니다. 내 소년 시절 가장 오래된 기억 중에도 약간 변형된 그 강력한 문구가 있습니다. 언젠가 어머니는 삽화가 있는 큰 양장본 성경 이야기책, ‘나의 선한 목자 성경 이야기’를 가지고 집에 오셨습니다. 매일 저녁 불을 끄기 전, 형과 나는 기대하는 마음으로 앉아 어머니가 읽어주는 재미있는 사람들과 그들을 사랑한 하나님의 이야기로 가득한 옛 이야기를 들었습니다. 그 이야기들은 우리가 아주 큰 세상을 바라보는 렌즈가 되어 주었습니다. 두말할 필요가 없는 최고의 이야기꾼이 누구냐고요? 바로 나사렛 예수이십니다. 예수님은 우리 모두가 본능적으로 이야기를 좋아한다는 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 그래서 이야기는 예수님이 복음을 전하기 위해 끊임없이 사용하셨던 도구였습니다. ‘옛날 옛적에’ “땅에 씨”를 뿌리는 한 사람이 있었다 (마가복음 4:26). ‘옛날 옛적에’ “겨자씨”가 있었다(31절). 이런 식으로 말입니다. 마가복음은 예수님이 매일 사람들과 대화하실 때 이야기를 사용하셨다고 분명히 말하는데(34절), 이것은 사람들이 세상을 더 정확히 알고 그들을 사랑하시는 하나님을 더 철저히 이해하도록 도와주는 방법이었습니다.
자비와 은혜에 대한 하나님의 좋은 소식을 다른 사람들과 나누고자 할 때 이것을 기억하면 좋습니다. 이야기를 사용하면 거부하기가 거의 불가능하다는 사실 말입니다.

TELL ME A STORY

Once upon a time. Those four words just might be among the most powerful in the entire world. Some of my earliest memories as a boy contain a variation on that potent phrase. My mother came home one day with a large, hardcover illustrated edition of biblical stories— My Good Shepherd Bible Story Book. Every evening before lightsout, my brother and I would sit expectantly as she read to us of a time long ago filled with interesting people and the God who loved them. Those stories became a lens for how we looked at the great big world.
The undisputed greatest storyteller ever? Jesus of Nazareth. He knew we all carry inside us an innate love for stories, so that was the medium He consistently used to communicate His good news: Once upon a time there was a man who scattered “seed on the ground” (MARK 4:26). Once upon a time there was “a mustard seed” (V. 31), and on and on. Mark’s
gospel clearly indicates that Jesus used stories in His interactions with everyday people (V. 34) as a way to help them see the world more clearly and understand more thoroughly the God who loved them. That’s wise to remember as we desire to share with others God’s good news of mercy and grace. The use of story is almost impossible to resist. JOHN BLASE

성령과 조율하기

피아노 조율사가 우아한 그랜드 피아노를 조율하는 소리를 들으면서 나는 이 피아노가 쏟아내던 “바르샤바 협주곡”의 믿기지 않을 정도로 놀라운 소리와 “주 하나님 지으신 모든 세계”의 풍부한 멜로디를 들었던 때가 생각났습니다. 하지만 지금 이 피아노는 정말 조율이 필요한 상태입니다. 음 높이에 맞는 건반들도 있지만, 어떤 건반들은 반음이 높거나 낮아서 듣기 싫은 소리를 냈습니다. 피아노 조율사의 책임은 각 건반이 같은 소리가 나도록 하는 것이 아니라, 각 건반의 고유의 음이 다른 음과 결합하여 즐겁고 조화로운 전체 음을 내도록 하는 것입니다. 우리는 교회 안에서도 불협화음이 나는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 독특한 야망이나 재능을 가진 사람들이 함께 부딪치면 부조화를 일으킬 수 있습니다. 갈라디아서 5장에서 바울은 성도들에게 하나님과의 교제나 다른 사람들과의 관계를 파괴할 “분쟁과 시기와 분냄과 당 짓는 것”을 없애라고 호소했습니다. 바울은 계속해서 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제”의 성령의 열매를 품으라고 격려합니다(20, 22-23 절). 우리가 성령에 의지하여 살아갈 때 지엽적인 문제를 놓고 일어나는 필요 없는 갈등을 더 쉽게 피할 수 있음을 알게 됩니다. 우리가 목적을 서로 공유하면 우리의 서로 다른 점들을 극복할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리는 각자 우리의 마음을 주님께 조율하면서 은혜로 하나된 가운데 성장할 수 있습니다.

IN TUNE WITH THE SPIRIT

As I listened to the piano tuner work on the elegant grand piano, I thought about the times when I’d heard that very same piano pour out the incredible sound of the “Warsaw Concerto” and the rich melody of “How Great Thou Art.” But now the instrument desperately needed to be tuned. While some notes were right on pitch, others were sharp or flat, creating an unpleasant sound. The piano tuner’s responsibility wasn’t to make each of the keys play the same sound but to assure that each note’s unique sound combined with others to create a pleasing harmonious whole. Even within the church, we can observe notes of discord. People with unique ambitions or talents can create a jarring dissonance when they’re joined together. In Galatians 5, Paul pleaded with believers to do away with “discord, jealousy, fits of rage, [and] selfish ambition,” which would destroy fellowship with God or relationships with others. Paul went on to encourage us to embrace the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (VV. 20, 22–23). When we live by the Spirit, we’ll find it easier to avoid unnecessary conflict on nonessential matters. Our shared sense of purpose can be greater than our differences. And with God’s help, each of us can grow in grace and unity as we keep our hearts in tune with Him. CINDY HESS KASPER
