더 소중한 하나님

과거에 예수 믿는 사람들에게 상처를 받은 어머니는 내 삶을 주님께 드리기로 했을 때 크게 화를 내셨습니다. “그래서, 네가 이제 나를 심판하겠다는 거냐? 어림없는 짓 마라.” 어머니는 그렇게 전화를 끊으셨고 그 해 내내 나와 말하기를 거부하셨습니다. 나는 너무나 마음이 아팠지만 하나님과의 관계가 나의 여러 귀한 관계보다 더 중요하다는 것을 차차 알게 되었습니다. 나는 어머니가 내 전화를 받지 않으실 때마다 어머니를 위해 기도했고 어머니를 더욱 사랑할 수 있도록 하나님께 간구했습니다.

마침내 우리는 화해했습니다. 몇 달 후 어머니는 나에게 “네가 정말 변했구나. 이제 나도 예수님에 대해 들을 준비가 된 것 같다.”라고 하셨습니다. 곧 어머니는 그리스도를 영접했고 여생을 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하며 사셨습니다.

예수님께 달려가서 무엇을 해야 영생을 얻을 수 있는지 물었지만 자신의 재산을 포기하지 못해서 슬퍼하며 그 자리를 떠났던 사람처럼(마가복음 10:17- 22), 나도 그분을 따르기 위해 모든 것을 포기해야 하나 하는 생각에 많이 힘들었습니다.

하나님보다 더 의지할 수 있다고 생각하는 물질이나 사람들을 포기 하기란 쉽지 않습니다(23-25절). 그러나 우리가 이 세상에서 아무리 값진 것을 포기하거나 잃는다 해도 예수님과 함께하는 영생이라는 선물보다 값질 수는 없습니다. 우리 사랑의 하나님은 온 인류를 구원하시려고 기꺼이 자신을 희생하셨습니다. 그분은 우리를 평안으로 감싸 안으시고 측량할 수 없는 영원한 사랑으로 우리 마음에 찾아오십니다.

예수님을 따르기로 했을 때 포기하기 가장 힘들었던 것은 무엇이었습니까? 세상적인 안위와 재물, 그리고 사람을 의지하는 것이 그분을 의지하는 것보다 더 쉽게 느껴지는 이유는 무엇일까요?

하나님, 자격 없는 저희를 사랑해 주시고 이 세상의 어떤 것이나 누구보다 하나님이 더 소중하다는 것을 일깨워 주시니 감사합니다.

GOD IS WORTH MORE

Having been hurt by believers in Jesus in the past, my mom responded in anger when I dedicated my life to Him. “So, now you’re going to judge me? I don’t think so.” She hung up the phone and refused to talk to me for a whole year. I grieved, but eventually realized a relationship with God was even more important than one of my most valued relationships. I prayed for her every time she refused my calls and asked God to help me love her well.

Finally, we reconciled. A few months later, she said, “You’ve changed. I think I’m ready to hear more about Jesus.” Soon after, she accepted Christ and lived the rest of her days loving God and others.

Like the man who ran up to Jesus asking how he could inherit eternal life but left in sorrow because he didn’t want to part with his wealth (MARK 10:17–22), I struggled with the thought of giving up everything to follow Him.

It’s not easy surrendering the things or people we think we can count on more than God (VV. 23–25). But the value of what we give up or lose in this world will never exceed the gift of eternal life with Jesus. Our loving God willingly sacrificed Himself to save all people. He wraps us in peace and woos us with priceless and persistent love. XOCHITL DIXON

완전히 드러내심

영화 팬들은 ‘메리 포핀스 리턴즈’에서 주인공 역을 맡은 에밀리 블런트의 아름다운 목소리를 들었습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 에밀리의 남편은 결혼 4년째가 되어서야 그녀의 노래 실력을 처음 알게 되었다고 합니다. 남편은 아내의 노래를 처음 듣고는 깜짝 놀라, “도대체 내게 언제 말하려고 했지?”라고 생각했다고 한 인터뷰에서 털어놓았습니다.

우리는 종종 주변 사람들에게서 전에는 몰랐던, 때론 아주 뜻밖의 모습을 발견하고 놀라곤 합니다. 마가복음 속의 제자들도 처음에는 예수님을 단편적으로만 알았고 주님이 누구신지 온전히 알려고 애썼습니다. 그러나 그들이 갈릴리 바다에서 예수님을 만났을 때 주님은 자연을 다스리는 능력을 보이시면서 자신을 더 많이 드러내셨습니다.

예수님께서 오천 명이 넘는 군중을 먹이신 후 제자들을 갈릴리 바다로 보내셨을 때 제자들은 거기서 폭풍우를 만났습니다. 동이 틀 무렵 제자들은 누군가가 물 위로 걸어오는 것을 보고 몹시 두려워했습니다. 그러자 그리스도께서 친숙한 목소리로 “안심하라 내니 두려워하지 말라”(마가복음 6:50) 고 하시며 그들을 안심시키셨습니다. 그러고는 성난 바다를 잠잠케 하셨습니다. 그같은 엄청난 능력을 본 제자들은 “마음에 심히 놀라며”(6:51) 자신들이 경험한 예수님의 능력을 온전히 이해해 보려고 애를 썼습니다.

우리 삶의 폭풍우를 제어하는 예수님과 그분의 능력을 경험하게 될 때, 우리도 그분이 누구신지 더 철저히 알게 되면서 놀라움을 금치 못하게 됩니다.

THE FULL REVEAL

Moviegoers heard the beautiful voice of Emily Blunt as the starring role in Mary Poppins Returns. Amazingly, it was four years into their marriage before her husband discovered her vocal talent. In an interview, he revealed his surprise the first time he heard her sing, thinking, “When were you going to tell me this?”

In relationships we often learn new, sometimes unexpected, details that surprise us. In Mark’s gospel, Christ’s disciples initially started with an incomplete picture of Jesus and struggled to grasp all of who He is. In an encounter on the Sea of Galilee, however, Jesus revealed more of Himself—this time the extent of His power over the forces of nature.

After feeding a crowd numbering more than 5,000 people, Jesus sent His disciples out on the Sea of Galilee, where they were caught in a fierce storm. Just before dawn, the disciples were terrified to see someone walking on the water. Christ’s familiar voice spoke words of comfort, saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (MARK 6:50). Then He calmed the raging sea. Upon seeing such great power, the disciples were “completely amazed” (6:51) even as they struggled to fully comprehend this experience of Christ’s power.

As we experience Jesus and His power over the storms of our lives, we gain a more complete picture of who He is. And we’re amazed. LISA M. SAMRA

고난 중의 힘

1948년 지하 교회의 목사였던 할란 포포프는 “간단한 심문”을 받는다는 구실로 집에서 끌려갔습니다. 2주 후 그는 열흘에 걸쳐 24시간 내내 심문을 받았고 아무것도 먹지 못했습니다. 자신이 간첩이 아니라고 할 때마다 매질을 당했습니다. 포포프는 이런 혹독한 심문을 당하면서도 동료 죄수들을 예수님께 인도하였습니다. 11년이 지나 그는 결국 풀려났습니다. 그리고 계속 그의 믿음을 전하다가 2년 후 그 나라를 떠나 가족과 재회할 수 있었습니다. 그는 그 후 여러 해 동안 계속해서 복음을 전하면서 기금을 모아 폐쇄된 국가들에 성경을 보급했습니다.

여러 시대에 걸쳐 예수님을 믿었던 수많은 사람들처럼 포포프도 그의 믿음 때문에 박해를 받았습니다. 그리스도는 자신의 고문과 죽음, 이후에 있을 제자들의 박해 훨씬 전에 “의를 위하여 박해를 받은 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이라”(마태복음 5:10)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 이어서 “나로 말미암아 너희를 욕하고 박해하고 거짓으로 너희를 거슬러 모든 악한 말을 할 때에는 너희에게 복이 있다”(11절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

“복이 있다”고요? 예수님은 무슨 말씀을 하시려 했던 걸까요? 예수님은 그분과의 관계에서 얻을 수 있는 온전함과 기쁨과 위안을 말씀하신 것입니다 (4, 8-10절). 포포프는 고통 속에서도 자신에게 힘을 불어넣어 주는 하나님의 임재를 느꼈기 때문에 고통을 견딜 수 있었습니다. 우리도 하나님과 동행하면 어떤 상황에서도 그분의 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리와 함께 계십니다.

STRENGTH IN SUFFERING

In 1948, Harlan Popov, the pastor of an underground church, was taken from his home for a “little questioning.” Two weeks later, he received around-the-clock interrogation and no food for ten days. Each time he denied being a spy, he was beaten. Popov not only survived his harsh treatment but also led fellow prisoners to Jesus. Finally, eleven years later, he was released and continued to share his faith until, two years later, he was able to leave the country and be reunited with his family. He spent the following years preaching and raising money to distribute Bibles in closed countries.

Like countless believers in Jesus throughout the ages, Popov was persecuted because of his faith. Christ, long before His own torture and death and the subsequent persecution of His followers, said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (MATTHEW 5:10). He continued, “Blessed are you when people . . . persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me” (V. 11).

“Blessed”? What could Jesus have meant? He was referring to the wholeness, joy, and comfort found in a relationship with Him (VV. 4, 8–10). Popov persevered because he felt the presence of God infusing strength into him, even in suffering. When we walk with God, no matter our circumstances, we too can experience His peace. He is with us. 구원하시는 분

“현존하는 가장 용감한 사람”이라고 불렸던 데스몬드는 사실 사람들이 짐작하는 그런 사람은 아니었습니다. 그는 총기 소지를 거부한 군인이었습니다. 위생병이었던 그는 한 전투에서 혼자 75명의 부상병을 구해냈습니다. 그가 구조한 사람 중에는 그를 겁쟁이라고 부르고 그의 신앙을 비웃던 사람들도 있었습니다. 데스몬드는 쏟아지는 총탄 속을 넘나들면서 “주님, 한 명이라도 더 구하게 해주세요.”라고 계속 기도했습니다. 그는 영웅으로 추대되어 명예 훈장을 받았습니다.

THE ONE WHO SAVES

He was called “one of the bravest persons alive,” but he wasn’t what others expected. Desmond was a soldier who declined to carry a gun. As a medic, he single-handedly rescued seventy-five injured soldiers from harm in one battle, including some who once called him a coward and ridiculed him for his faith. Running into heavy gunfire, Desmond prayed continually, “Lord, please help me get one more.” He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism.

Scripture tells us that Jesus was greatly misunderstood. On a day foretold by the prophet Zechariah (9:9), Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey and the crowd waved branches, shouting “Hosanna!” (an exclamation of praise meaning “Save!”). Quoting Psalm 118:26, they cried: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (JOHN 12:13). But the very next verse in that psalm refers to bringing a sacrifice “with boughs in hand” (PSALM 118:27). While the crowd in John 12 anticipated an earthly king to save them from Rome, Jesus was much more. He was King of Kings and our sacrifice—God in the flesh, willingly embracing the cross to save us from our sins—a purpose prophesied centuries earlier.

“At first his disciples did not understand all this,” John writes. Only later “did they realize that these things had been written about him” (JOHN 12:16). Illumined by His Word, God’s eternal purposes became clear. He loves us enough to send a mighty Savior! JAMES BANKS

가장 깊은 곳의 갈망

청년 때부터 돈이 없으면 어쩌나 늘 걱정이 많았던 던컨은 20대 초부터 야망을 갖고 미래를 준비하기 시작했습니다. 잘 나가는 실리콘밸리 회사에서 승진을 거듭하던 던컨은 막대한 부를 축적하였습니다. 두둑한 은행 잔고, 고급 스포츠카, 그리고 캘리포니아에 백만 불짜리 집도 소유했습니다. 하지만 바라던 것을 다 가져도 너무나 불행했습니다. 던컨은 이렇게 말합니다. “불안하고 불만족스러웠습니다. 사실 부자가 되어도 삶은 실제로 더 힘들어질 수 있습니다.” 돈더미가 참된 친구 관계나 공동체나 기쁨을 가져다주지 않았습니다. 오히려 종종 그의 마음에 더 많은 상처만 주었습니다.

어떤 이들은 안정된 삶을 보장받기 위해 엄청난 에너지를 쏟아부어 부를 축적합니다. 그러나 이것은 어리석은 일입니다. 성경은 “돈 좋아하는 사람은 돈이 아무리 많아도 만족하지 못한다”(전도서 5:10, 새번역)고 강력하게 말합니다. 어떤 이들은 몸을 혹사하면서까지 일을 합니다. 그들은 자신의 소유를 다른 사람들과 비교해 가며 더 상당한 경제적 지위를 얻기 위해 온갖 노력을 다합니다. 하지만 원하던 경제적 여유를 얻게 되어도 여전히 만족하지 못합니다. 언제나 충분하지 않은 것입니다. 전도서 저자가 “이것도 헛되도다” (10절)라고 한 것과 같습니다.

하나님을 떠나서 만족감을 얻으려고 애쓰는 것은 헛될 뿐입니다. 성경은 세상에 유익을 주기 위해 열심히 일하고 우리의 재능을 발휘하라고 권면하지만, 우리의 가장 깊은 곳의 갈망은 부를 아무리 쌓아도 충족시킬 수 없습니다. 오직 예수님만이 참되고 만족스러운 삶을 주실 수 있습니다(요한복음 10:10). 주님과의 사랑의 관계에 근거한 삶, 그것만으로 충분한 삶 말입니다!

OUR DEEPEST LONGINGS

As a young man, Duncan had been afraid of not having enough money, so in his early twenties, he began ambitiously building his future. Climbing the ladder at a prestigious Silicon Valley company, Duncan achieved vast wealth. He had a bulging bank account, a luxury sports car, and a million-dollar California home. He had everything he desired; yet he was profoundly unhappy. “I felt anxious and dissatisfied,” Duncan said. “In fact, wealth can actually make life worse.” Piles of cash didn’t provide friendship, community, or joy—and often brought him only more heartache.

Some people will expend immense energy attempting to amass wealth in an effort to secure their lives. It’s a fool’s game. “Whoever loves money never has enough,” Scripture insists (ECCLESIASTES 5:10). Some will work themselves to the bone. They’ll strive and push, comparing their possessions with others and straining to achieve some economic status. And yet even if they gain supposed financial freedom, they’ll still be unsatisfied. It’s not enough. As the writer of Ecclesiastes states, “This too is meaningless” (V. 10).

The truth is, striving to find fulfillment apart from God will prove futile. While Scripture calls us to work hard and use our gifts for the good of the world, we can never accumulate enough to satisfy our deepest longings. Jesus alone offers a real and satisfying life (JOHN 10:10)—one based on a loving relationship that’s truly enough! WINN COLLIER

지금의 삶 그 다음은?

마틴 루터 킹 박사는 1968년 4월 3일 밤에 “나는 산 정상에 서 보았습니다”라는 마지막 연설을 했습니다. 그는 연설 중에 자신이 오래 살지 못할 것 같다는 암시를 했습니다. “우리 앞에는 험난한 날들이 기다리고 있습니다. 그러나 괜찮습니다. 왜냐하면 나는 산의 정상에 가보았기 때문입니다. 거기서 내려다보면서 나는 약속의 땅을 보았습니다. 그곳에 여러분과 함께 가지 못할지도 모릅니다...... [그러나] 오늘 밤 나는 행복합니다. 아무런 걱정이 없습니다. 그 누구도 두렵지 않습니다. 내 눈은 장차 오실 주님의 영광을 보았습니다.” 그 다음 날 그는 암살당했습니다.

바울 사도도 죽음을 얼마 남기지 않고 그의 제자 디모데에게 편지를 썼습니다. “전제와 같이 내가 벌써 부어지고 나의 떠날 시각이 가까웠도다...... 이제 후로는 나를 위하여 의의 면류관이 예비되었으므로 주 곧 의로우신 재판장이 그 날에 내게 주실 것이며”(디모데후서 4:6, 8). 킹 박사처럼 바울도 이 땅에서 그의 시간이 다하고 있음을 알았습니다. 두 사람은 큰 업적을 남기는 위대한 삶을 살았지만, 그들을 기다리는 저 편의 참된 삶에서 한번도 눈을 떼지 않았습니다. 그리고 다가올 일을 기쁘게 받아들였습니다.

우리도 그들처럼 “우리가 주목하는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이니 보이는 것은 잠깐이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원함이라”(고린도후서 4:18)고 고백할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

On the night of April 3, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King gave his final speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.” In it, he hints that he believed he might not live long. He said, “We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. . . . [But] I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.” The next day, he was assassinated.

The apostle Paul, shortly before his death, wrote to his protégé Timothy: “I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. . . . Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day” (2 TIMOTHY 4:6, 8). Paul knew his time on earth was drawing to a close, as did Dr. King. Both men realized lives of incredible significance, yet never lost sight of the true life ahead. Both men welcomed what came next.

Like them, may we “fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:18). REMI OYEDELE

기쁜 마음으로 내는 사람들

여러 해 전 아내는 물건을 사고 약간의 환불을 받았습니다. 생각지도 않은 것이 우편으로 온 것입니다. 비슷한 시기에 아내는 친한 친구로부터 해외의 한 여성단체에 큰 도움이 필요하다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 기업가 정신을 지닌 여성들이 교육과 비즈니스를 통해 더 나은 삶을 만들기 위해 애쓰고 있는데, 보통 그렇듯이 재정이 가장 시급한 장벽이었습니다.

아내는 환불로 받은 돈을 그 여성들을 돕는 사역단체에 소액 융자로 제공했습니다. 대출금이 상환될 때마다 아내는 돌려받은 돈을 계속해서 다시 융자해주는 식으로 지금까지 스물일곱 번의 소액 융자를 제공하였습니다. 아내가 기쁨으로 하는 일이 여럿 있지만, 한 번도 만난 적이 없는 그 여성들의 삶이 피어나고 있다는 소식을 들을 때만큼 환하게 웃을 때를 거의 본 적이 없습니다.

“하나님은 즐겨 내는 자를 사랑하시느니라”(고린도후서 9:7)라는 말씀 중에서 ‘내는 자’에 강조점을 두는 경우를 자주 봅니다. 맞는 말입니다. 하지만 어떤 마음으로 기부를 하느냐가 중요합니다. “인색함으로나 억지로” 하지 말아야 하고 “적게” 심지 말아야 합니다(6-7절). 간단히 말해 기부는 “즐겨 내는” 것이어야 합니다. 그럴 때 우리의 기부의 모습은 조금씩 다를지 몰라도 우리의 얼굴에는 즐거움이 환히 드러날 것입니다.

CHEERFUL GIVERS

Years ago, my wife received a small rebate from something she’d purchased. It wasn’t something she’d expected, it just showed up in the mail. About the same time, a good friend shared with her the immense needs of women in another country, entrepreneurial-minded women trying to better themselves by way of education and business. As is often the case, however, their first barrier was financial.

My wife took that rebate and made a micro-loan to a ministry devoted to helping these women. When the loan was repaid, she simply loaned again, and again, and so far has made twenty-seven such investments. My wife enjoys many things, but there’s rarely a smile as big on her face as when she receives an update on the flourishing taking place in the lives of women she’s never met.

We often hear emphasis on the last word in this phrase—“God loves a cheerful giver” (2 CORINTHIANS 9:7)—and rightly so. But our giving has a specific quality about it—it shouldn’t be done “reluctantly or under compulsion,” and we’re called not to sow “sparingly” (VV. 6–7). In a word, our giving is to be “cheerful.” And while each of us will give a little differently, our faces are places for telling evidence of our cheer. JOHN BLASE

예수님처럼 기도하기

모든 동전에는 양면이 있습니다. 앞면은 “머리”라 하는데, 초기 로마시대부터 보통 국가의 최고통수권자가 새겨져 있습니다. 뒷면은 “꼬리”라 하는데, 아마도 영국의 10펜스짜리 동전에 새겨진 사자 문장의 치켜 올라간 꼬리에서 유래한 것으로 추정됩니다.

겟세마네 동산에서 그리스도께서 드린 기도에도 동전처럼 양면이 있습니다. 예수님은 십자가에 달리기 전날 밤, 일생의 가장 처절한 순간에 이렇게 기도하셨습니다. “아버지여 만일 아버지의 뜻이거든 이 잔을 내게서 옮기시옵소서 그러나 내 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다” (누가복음 22:42). 그리스도께서 “이 잔을 옮기시옵소서”라고 하신 것은 가장 솔직한 기도입니다. 주님은 “이것이 ‘내가’ 원하는 것입니다.”라며 그분의 개인적인 바람을 드러내셨습니다.

하지만 그 다음 예수님은 동전을 뒤집어 “내 원대로 마시옵고”라고 기도하십니다. 그쪽 면은 자신을 버리는 것입니다. 하나님 앞에 우리 자신을 내려놓는 것은 단순히 “하나님, 하나님이 원하시는 게 무엇입니까?”라고 말하는 것으로 시작됩니다.

이 양면적인 기도는 마태복음 26장과 마가복음 14장, 요한복음 18장 에도 나옵니다. 예수님은 두 가지 기도를 모두 드리셨습니다. ‘이 잔을 옮기시옵소서’(하나님, 내가 이것을 원합니다)라는 기도와, ‘그러나 내 원대로 마시옵고’(하나님, 하나님은 무엇을 원하십니까?) 라는 기도 두 개를 놓고 중점적으로 기도하셨습니다.

양면을 다 가지신 예수님은 기도도 그렇게 하셨습니다.

PRAYING LIKE JESUS

Every coin has two sides. The front is called “heads” and, from early Roman times, usually depicts a country’s head of state. The back is called “tails,” a term possibly originating from the British ten pence depicting the raised tail of a heraldic lion.

Like a coin, Christ’s prayer in the garden of Gethsemane possesses two sides. In the deepest hours of His life, on the night before He died on a cross, Jesus prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (LUKE 22:42). When Christ says, “take this cup,” that’s the raw honesty of prayer. He reveals His personal desire, “This is what I want.”

Then Jesus turns the coin, praying “not my will.” That’s the side of abandon. Abandoning ourselves to God begins when we simply say, “But what do You want, God?”

This two-sided prayer is also included in Matthew 26 and Mark 14 and is mentioned in John 18. Jesus prayed both sides of prayer: take this cup (what I want, God), yet not My will (what do You want, God?), pivoting between them.

노력없이 받는 유산

“아빠, 저녁 식사 고마워요.” 나는 식당 테이블에 냅킨을 놓으며 말했습니다. 대학교 방학을 맞아 오랜만에 집에 왔는데, 부모님이 나를 위해 밥을 사주는 것이 이상하게 느껴졌습니다. 아버지가 대답하셨습니다. “천만에, 줄리야. 매번 고맙다고 안 해도 돼. 네가 독립해서 따로 지내지만 너는 여전히 내 딸이고 우리 가족이잖아.” 나는 웃으며 말했습니다. “고마워요, 아빠.”

가족으로서 나는 부모님의 사랑이나 나를 위해 해주시는 것을 받을만한 어떤 것도 하지 않았습니다. 그런데 아버지 말을 듣고 보니 내가 하나님 가족의 일원이 되기 위해서도 어떤 일을 하지 않았다는 생각이 들었습니다.

에베소서에서 바울은 그의 편지를 읽는 사람들에게 하나님께서 그들을 “그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고”(1:4), 또는 하나님 앞에 흠이 없게 세우시려고(5:25-27) 선택하셨다고 말합니다. 그러나 이는 오직 예수님을 통해서만 가능합니다. “우리는 그리스도 안에서 그의 은혜의 풍성함을 따라 그의 피로 말미암아 속량 곧 죄사함을 받았느니라”(1:7). 우리는 하나님의 은혜나 용서를 구하거나, 혹은 그분의 자녀가 되기 위해 노력하지 않아도 됩니다. 그저 하나님께서 값없이 주시는 선물을 받기만 하면 됩니다.

INHERITANCE ISN’T EARNED

“Thanks for dinner, Dad,” I said as I set my napkin on the restaurant table. I was home on a break from college and, after being gone for a while, it felt strange to have my parents pay for me. “You’re welcome, Julie,” my dad replied, “but you don’t have to thank me for everything all the time. I know you’ve been off on your own, but you’re still my daughter and a part of the family.” I smiled. “Thanks, Dad.”

In my family, I haven’t done anything to earn my parents’ love or what they do for me. But my dad’s comment reminds me that I haven’t done anything to deserve to be a part of God’s family either.

In the book of Ephesians, Paul tells his readers that God chose them “to be holy and blameless in his sight” (1:4), or to stand without blemish before Him (5:25–27). But this is only possible through Jesus, in whom “we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (1:7). We don’t have to earn God’s grace, forgiveness, or entrance into His family. We simply accept His free gift.

When we turn our lives over to Jesus, we become children of God, which means we receive eternal life and have an inheritance waiting for us in heaven. Praise God for offering such a wonderful gift! - JULIE SCHWAB

축복받은 빵

우리 큰 딸이 십대가 되었을 때, 아내와 나는 그 아이가 태어난 후 우리가 썼던 일기를 주었습니다. 우리는 딸이 좋아하는 것과 싫어하는 것, 별났던 일과 기억할 만한 일들을 짤막하게 기록해 두었습니다. 어느 순간엔가 그 글들은 우리가 딸을 관찰한 것과 하나님이 딸에게 어떤 일을 하셨는지를 기록한 편지처럼 되었습니다. 딸의 열세 번째 생일에 그것을 주자 딸은 너무 좋아했습니다. 딸아이는 자신이 누구인지 그 기원의 결정적인 부분을 알 수 있는 선물을 받은 것입니다.

빵처럼 흔한 것을 축복하시면서도 예수님은 그것의 정체가 무엇인지를 보여주셨습니다. 모든 창조물과 함께 그 빵 또한 하나님의 영광을 드러내기 위해 만들어졌다는 것입니다. 나는 예수님이 또한 물질세계의 미래를 가리킨 것으로 믿습니다. 모든 창조물들은 언젠가 하나님의 영광으로 가득 차게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 그래서 빵을 축복하시면서(마태복음 26:26) 예수님은 창조의 ‘기원’ 과 ‘운명’을 가리키신 것입니다(로마서 8:21-22).

당신 이야기의 “시작”이 엉망이라고 느낄지 모르겠습니다. 어쩌면 미래가 밝지 못하다고 생각할지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 여기에 더 큰 이야기가 있습니다. 그것은 목적을 갖고 또 목적을 위해 당신을 지으시고 당신을 통해 즐거워하시는 하나님의 이야기입니다. 그것은 당신을 구원하기 위해 오셔서, 당신을 새롭게 하기 위해 당신 안에 성령이 거하게 하시고 당신의 본 모습을 회복시키시는 하나님의 이야기입니다(마태복음 26:28). 바로 당신을 ‘복 주시기’ 원하시는 하나님의 이야기입니다.

BLESSED BREAD

When our oldest child became a teenager, my wife and I gave her a journal that we’d been writing in since her birth. We’d recorded her likes and dislikes, quirks and memorable one-liners. At some point the entries became more like letters, describing what we see in her and how we see God at work in her. When we gave it to her on her thirteenth birthday, she was mesmerized. She’d been given the gift of knowing a crucial part of the origins of her identity.

In blessing something as common as bread, Jesus was revealing its identity. What it—along with all creation—was made to reflect: God’s glory. I believe Jesus was also pointing to the future of the material world. All creation will one day be filled with the glory of God. So in blessing bread (MATTHEW 26:26), Jesus was pointing to the origin and the destiny of creation (ROMANS 8:21–22).

Maybe the “beginning” of your story feels messed up. Maybe you don’t think there’s much of a future. But there’s a bigger story. It’s a story of a God who made you on purpose and for a purpose, who took pleasure in you. It’s a story of God who came to rescue you (MATTHEW 26:28); a God who put His Spirit in you to renew you and recover your identity. It’s a story of a God who wants to bless you. - GLENN PACKIAM
