깊음 속에서

산 프루투오소 수도원은 이탈리아 북서쪽 해변의 작은 만에 아늑하게 자리잡고 있습니다. 배를 타거나 걸어서만 갈 수 있는 이곳은 숨겨진 보석과 같습니다. 그러나 이 만에는 더 귀한 보물이 숨겨져 있습니다. 잠수부들이 바다에 뛰어들어 50피트(약 15미터) 아래로 내려가면 어떤 사람의 모습이 보이기 시작합니다. 1954년 세계 최초로 수중에 세운 ‘심연의 그리스도’ 조각상입니다. 그 동상은 깊음 속에 서 있는 예수님을 묘사하고 있는데, 동상의 손이 하늘을 가리키고 있습니다.

깊음, 당신도 아마 그것을 경험했을지 모릅니다. “나는 깊은 수렁에 빠지며... 내가 부르짖음으로 피곤하다”(2-3절)고 시편 69편은 말합니다. 원수들에게 비방을 받고 가족과도 사이가 멀어진(4, 7-12절) 시편 기자는 다른 사람들에게서 위로를 받을 수 없었고(20절) 비극이 자신을 “삼킬” 것 같아 두려웠습니다(15절). 우리를 깊음으로 몰고가는 것이 죄이든 슬픔이든, 깊음이란 삶의 어두운 절망의 순간입니다.

감사하게도, 절망은 깊음의 마지막 언어가 아닙니다. 비록 깊음이 냉혹하고 쓸쓸할지라도 그곳에도 계시는 한 분이 있습니다(139:8). 그리고 그분이 차가운 물 속에서 우리를 건지실 것입니다. “주님, ‘주님께서 나를 수렁에서 건져 주셨으니’, 내가 주님을 우러러 찬양하렵니다”(30:1, 새번역).

조각상이 우리에게 보여주듯, 우리가 세상의 무게에 짓눌려 가라앉을 때에도 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다. 깊음 가운데에도 예수님은 성령과 함께 거기 계시며, 높이 들려진 주님의 손은 결국 우리를 만나 건지실 준비가 되어 있습니다.

IN THE DEPTHS

San Fruttuoso Abbey is nestled in a cove off Italy’s northwest coast. Accessible only by boat or foot, it’s a secluded gem. But even more treasure hides in its bay. As divers venture into the sea and descend fifty feet down, the figure of a man starts coming into view. This is Christ of the Abyss, the world’s first underwater statue, placed in 1954. The bronze figure depicts Jesus in the depths, His hands raised to heaven.

The depths. Maybe you’ve experienced them. “I sink in the miry depths,” Psalm 69 says, “I am worn out calling for help” (VV. 2-3). Mocked by his foes and estranged from his family (VV. 4, 7-12), the psalmist found no comfort in others (V. 20) and feared his misery would “swallow” him up (V. 15). Whether it’s sin or sadness that takes us there, the depths are life’s moments of dark despair.

Thankfully, this isn’t the last word on the depths. For while they’re cold and lonely, there is one who can be found in them (139:8). And He will rescue us from their chilly waters. “I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths” (30:1). As that sculpture reminds us, when we’re sinking under the world’s weight, we’re not alone. Jesus by the Spirit is there in the depths, His hands raised high—ready to meet us and lift us out in time.

하나님의 위대한 능력

내가 사는 도시에 거대한 얼음폭풍이 몰려와 수 마일에 걸쳐 정전이 되자, 도시가 암흑 같았고 많은 사람들이 한파에 난방도 할 수 없게 되었습니다. 많은 가정들이 복구 트럭이 자기 동네에 와서 전력을 복구시켜 주기를 간절히 기다렸습니다. 나중에 나는 도움이 필요한 이들을 위해 파견된 차량들을 위해 한 교회 주차장이 임시 지휘 본부로 사용되었음을 알게 되었습니다.

복구 트럭에 대한 이야기를 들으면서 사도행전에서 예수님이 제자들에게 하신 명령이 떠올랐습니다. 예수님은 부활 후 40일 동안 제자들에게 나타나 그들을 격려하시고 하나님 나라에 대해 가르치셨습니다(사도행전 1:3). 예수님은 하늘로 올라가시기 전 제자들에게 마지막 약속을 하셨습니다. “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받으리라”(8절).

예수님은 하나님의 비교할 수 없이 위대한 능력이 성령을 통해 제자들에게 임할 것이라고 약속하셨습니다. 하지만 그 능력을 입는 목적은 자신들이 그냥 간직하기 위한 것이 아니었습니다. 그 대신 제자들은 하나님이 주시는 능력으로 죄로 인해 단절된 하나님의 능력과 사랑에 다시 연결되는 방법을 다른 사람들에게 전하는 사명을 감당했습니다.

우리가 공동체로 나아갈 때 우리에게는 동일한 능력과 부르심이 있습니다. 우리는 성령의 능력에 힘입어 고통 중에 있는 자들을 돌보고, 그들 또한 어떻게 하나님의 능력을 얻을 수 있는지 전해줄 수 있습니다.

GOD’S GREAT POWER

Our city fell almost dark after a massive ice storm took down miles of power lines, leaving many of our friends without electricity to heat their homes in the dead of a frigid winter. Families longed to see repair trucks in their neighborhoods working to restore power. Later, I learned that a church parking lot served as a temporary command center for the vehicles being sent out to assist those in need.

Hearing about the repair trucks brought to mind Jesus’ command to His disciples in the book of Acts. For forty days after His resurrection, Christ appeared to His disciples to encourage and teach them about the kingdom of God (ACTS 1:3). Before Jesus’ return to heaven, He gave them one last promise: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (V. 8).

Christ promised that God’s incomparably great power would be available to the disciples through His Spirit. But the purpose of having power wasn’t to keep it to themselves. Instead, the disciples let God empower them in the mission of telling others how to experience once more the connection to God’s power and love that was broken by sin.

As we go out into our communities, we have the same power and calling. Empowered by God’s Spirit, we can care for those who are suffering and share how they too can have access to God’s power.

GO AND TELL

Elliot is passionate about telling others about Jesus. During a week spent teaching from 2 Timothy for church leaders in a South Asian country, he reminded them of Paul’s farewell to Timothy. He urged them not to be ashamed of the good news but instead to embrace suffering and persecution for the gospel’s sake as did Paul (1:8-9). A few days later, Elliot learned that evangelism and Christian conversion had been banned in that country. With deep concern for their welfare, he prayed for these leaders to persevere and to boldly and with urgency continue to proclaim the gospel.

Paul understood the danger inherent in proclaiming the good news. He spent time in prison (VV. 8, 16) and had suffered in many other ways because of his teaching (VV. 11-12)—including being beaten, whipped, and stoned (SEE 2 CORINTHIANS 11:23-29). But nothing kept Paul from telling others about Jesus. His philosophy? “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (PHILIPPIANS 1:21). He lived to tell others about Christ, but he knew that if he died, he would be with Jesus. Paul reminded Timothy that the Holy Spirit would empower him (2 TIMOTHY 1:7).

God calls all of us who believe, wherever we are—at home or abroad—to tell others about Jesus. We may suffer, but He is right there with us.

와!

“와!” 어떤 사람이 사역하는 사람들에게 쉼과 격려를 제공하고 싶은 꿈을 갖고 큰 비용을 들여 구입한 한 휴양지를 둘러보고 우리 팀원들이 보인 반응입니다. 우리는 퀸 사이즈 이층 침대들과 킹 사이즈 침대가 있는 침실을 보고 놀랐습니다. 우아하게 갖춰진 주방과 식당 공간도 눈에 띄는 즐거움을 선사했습니다. 그게 다 인줄 알았는데, 실물 크기의 실내 농구장을 비롯하여 더 많은 놀라운 시설들이 있었습니다. 매번 “와” 하고 반응할 수밖에 없었습니다.

고대 예루살렘을 방문한 스바 여왕도 솔로몬 왕을 만났을 때 이와 비슷한 “와” 반응을 보였습니다. 여왕은 “솔로몬의 모든 지혜와 그가 건축한 왕궁...을 보고 크게 감동되었습니다”(열왕기상 10:4-5). 여러 세기가 지난 뒤, 다윗의 또 다른 왕손 예수님이 등장하여 사람들을 다른 방식으로 놀라게 했습니다. 예수님이 가시는 곳마다 사람들은 그분의 지혜와 사역이 경이로움을 깨닫게 되었으며(누가복음 4:36), 예수님은 사람들에게 “솔로몬보다 더 큰 이”가 이곳에 온 것을 보라고 강조하셨습니다(11:31). 예수님의 놀라운 사역으로 우리의 죄가 용서받았는데, 그것은 그분의 죽음이라는 커다란 희생으로 이루어진 것입니다. 주님은 그분께 나아오는 사람 누구나 반갑게 맞아 주십니다. 그리고 주님께 나아가는 사람들은 주님의 아름다움과 은혜를 경험하고 지금부터 영원토록 주님을 찬양하게 됩니다. 와!

WOW!

“Wow!” was the response of our team members who toured a retreat center—purchased at great cost by a person with a vision for the refreshment and encouragement of people serving in ministry. We were amazed by double-decker, queen-sized bunks and bedroom suites with kingsized beds. The exquisitely equipped kitchen and dining area also generated wide-eyed delight. And, just when you thought that you’d seen it all, there were more surprises—including a full-sized, indoor basketball court. Every “wow” was warranted.

The Queen of Sheba had a similar “wow” response when she visited King Solomon in ancient Jerusalem. When she “saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built . . . she was overwhelmed” (1 KINGS 10:4-5). Centuries later, another royal son of David—Jesus—appeared, and He amazed people in other ways. Everywhere He went, people recognized the wonder of His wisdom and works (LUKE 4:36), and He urged them to see that “someone greater than Solomon” had stepped onto the scene (11:31 NLT). The stunning ministry of Jesus grants forgiveness of sin—purchased at great cost, His death. He welcomes anyone who will to come to Him. And those who do will experience His beauty and grace and will sing His praises now and throughout eternity. Wow!

FROM THE DEADLY SWORD

Sabin Howard’s remarkable sculpture A Soldier’s Journey breathes with vitality and anguish. Thirty-eight bronze figures lean forward across a fifty-eight-foot bas-relief that traces the life of a World War I soldier. Completed in 2024, the panorama begins with a heartrending goodbye to family, leads us through the naive elation of departure, and moves into the horrors of battle. Finally, the sculpture returns us home where the veteran’s daughter peers into his upturned helmet—only to foresee World War II.

Howard sought “to find the thread that runs through humanity— that human beings can reach great heights, and they can sink to the level of the animal.” War reveals this reality.

The psalmist David knew well the bloody consequences of war. Aware of its tragic necessity to confront evil, he praised the God who “trains my hands for war” (PSALM 144:1). Yet he also recoiled from combat, praying, “From the deadly sword deliver me” (VV. 10-11). David looked forward to the time when the young won’t die in war, but sons “will be like well-nurtured plants” and daughters “like pillars carved to adorn a palace” (V. 12). On that day “there will be no breaching of walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in our streets” (V. 14).

Looking back, we remember those who’ve fallen in battle. Looking ahead, we sing with David, “I will sing a new song to you, my God” (V. 9).

새롭게 찾은 소망

티아는 열 여덟 살인 아들이 요즘 도서관에서 왜 이렇게 오랜 시간을 보내는지 궁금했습니다. 자폐인 아들은 말수가 적었으며 학교가 끝나면 대개 집으로 곧장 왔기 때문입니다. 무엇이 달라진 걸까? 아들을 재촉하자 마침내 이런 대답이 돌아왔습니다. “나빈과 같이 공부하고 있어요.”

알고 보니 나빈은 자기 아들이 공부에 어려움을 겪고 있음을 알고 함께 공부하자고 초청한 같은 반 친구였습니다. 18년 만에 처음으로 맺은 이 우정은 아들이 친구를 사귀는 희망을 포기했던 절망적인 아버지에게 큰 힘이 되었습니다.

한 사람이 도움이 필요한 다른 사람을 돌보며 함께 있어 주었기에 소망이 새롭게 피어났습니다. 바울은 초대 교회에서의 사역을 통해 이것이 우리의 구원의 소망에도 적용된다는 것을 알았습니다. 예수님을 믿는 신자들이 주님의 재림을 기다리며 “오직 깨어 정신을 차리고”(데살로니가전서 5:6) 있기 위해서는 서로가 서로를 도와주어야 합니다(11절). 특히 어려움을 겪고 있는 사람들에게 더 그렇게 해야 합니다.

바울은 그래서 신자들이 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 사랑의 삶을 살았음에도 불구하고(4:1, 10) 그들에게 “마음이 약한 자들을 격려하고 힘이 없는 자들을 붙들어 주라”(5:14)고 상기시켰습니다. 우리가 두려움과 불안, 낙심에 빠져 있는 그리스도인들을 알아보고, 그들 곁에 머무르며 귀 기울이고 따뜻한 말을 건네고 잠잠히 함께 있어줄 때, 하나님은 우리를 사용하여 그들이 예수님 안에서 소망을 붙들 수 있도록 그들에게 힘과 용기를 주실 수 있습니다.

HOPE RENEWED

Thia was puzzled. Why was his eighteen-year-old son spending so much time in the library these days? His son, who was autistic and rarely spoke to anyone, would usually return straight home after class. What changed? When pressed, his son finally replied: “Studying with Navin.”

Navin, it turned out, was a classmate who noticed that Thia’s son was struggling in class and invited him to study together. This budding friendship—the first in eighteen years—greatly encouraged the disheartened father who’d given up hope of his son ever having a friend.

Hope was renewed because one person cared enough to come alongside another who needed help. In Paul’s ministry to the early church, he knew this also applied to our hope of salvation. For believers in Jesus to “be awake and sober” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:6), living in the hope of His return, they had to help one another (V. 11), especially those who were struggling.

That’s why even though these believers led lives of love that pleased God (4:1, 10), Paul reminded them to “encourage the disheartened, help the weak” (5:14). When we notice believers in Christ who are fearful, anxious, or despondent, and we come alongside them—whether to listen, offer a kind word, or sit quietly together—God can use us to give them the strength and courage to hold on to their hope in Jesus.

믿음의 도약

남극 서부 지역에서 6개월 정도 밖에 안 된 황제펭귄 약 700마리가 차가운 해수면에서 50피트(약 15미터)나 높은 얼음절벽 가장자리에 모여 있었습니다. 마침내 펭귄 한 마리가 앞으로 몸을 기울이더니 “믿음의 도약”을 감행하여 얼음 같은 물 속으로 뛰어들어 헤엄쳐 갔습니다. 곧 수십 마리의 펭귄들이 뒤따라 뛰어내렸습니다.

어린 펭귄들은 처음 헤엄칠 때 대개 2피트(약 60센티미터) 높이에서 뛰어내려 물 속으로 들어갑니다. 이 펭귄 떼의 죽음을 무릅쓴 도약이 처음으로 카메라에 잡힌 것입니다.

어떤 사람들은 그 펭귄들이 알 수 없는 곳으로 눈감고 뛰어드는 것이 마치 사람이 예수님을 믿고 구원받을 때와 비슷하다고 말하곤 합니다. 그러나 주님을 믿는 믿음은 이와 정반대입니다. 히브리서 저자는 “믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거”(히브리서 11:1)라고 했습니다.

에녹의 믿음은 하나님을 기쁘시게 했습니다. “믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 못합니다”(6절). 세상은 그 같은 대홍수를 본 적이 없었지만, 노아는 하나님을 신뢰했기 때문에 “경외함으로 방주를 준비하여 그 집을 구원하였습니다”(7절). 아브라함은 믿음으로 “갈 바를 알지 못하고” 하나님의 지시를 따랐습니다(8절).

우리가 처음 예수님을 믿을 때, 그것은 믿음으로 이루어집니다. 우리가 주님을 계속 따르는 동안 우리의 믿음이 시험받을 때, 우리는 하나님께서 그 믿음의 사람들을 위해 어떻게 행하셨는지 기억할 필요가 있습니다. 우리가 그 이유와 방법을 알지 못할 때라도 그 결과에 대해서는 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

LEAP OF FAITH

About seven hundred emperor penguins in West Antarctica, only six months old, huddled together at the edge of a towering icy cliff fifty feet above the frigid water. Finally, one penguin leaned forward and took “a leap of faith,” diving into the icy water below and swimming away. Soon scores of penguins took the plunge.

Young penguins typically jump just a couple of feet into the water for their first swim. This group’s death-defying leap was the first to be caught on camera.

Some people would say that the blind leap into the unknown by those penguins is similar to what happens when a person trusts in Jesus for salvation. However, faith in Him is just the opposite. The author of Hebrews said, “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (HEBREWS 11:1).

Enoch’s faith pleased God: “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (V. 6). The world hadn’t seen anything like the great flood and yet Noah “in holy fear built an ark to save his family” (V. 7) because he trusted in God. By faith Abraham followed God “even though he did not know where he was going” (V. 8).

When we first put our trust in Jesus, it’s by faith. As we continue following Him and our faith is tested, we can remember how God came through for these men. Even when we don’t know the whys and hows, we can trust God with the outcome.

진리를 사랑하라

잭은 학교를 몹시 싫어합니다. 수학과 문법, 원소 주기율표 수업들을 지루해했습니다. 그러나 그는 집을 짓는 일은 아주 좋아합니다. 여름에 아버지와 함께 일하러 가는데, 잭은 아버지를 거드는 정도로 성이 차지 않습니다. 그는 지금 열 여섯 살 밖에 안 되었지만 시멘트와 지붕 재료에 대해, 그리고 벽의 틀을 세우는 방법에 대해 잘 알고 있습니다. 학교 수업과 건축, 어떤 차이가 있는 것일까요? 사랑입니다. 잭은 건축은 사랑하지만 학교 수업은 사랑하지 않습니다. 그의 건축 사랑이 건축 지식을 갖게 해준 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 “진리를 사랑”(데살로니가후서 2:10)해야 합니다. 바울은 사탄이 “멸망하는 자들”(10절)을 속이기 위해 “표적과 거짓 기적”(9절) 을 행할 것이라고 말합니다. 그들은 왜 멸망할까요? “그들은 진리를 사랑하지 않으므로 구원을 받지 못해 결국 멸망하고 말 것입니다”(10절, 현대인의 성경). 그들은 진리를 사랑하지 않아 진리를 알지 못하게 되었습니다. 그래서 거짓에 속을 것입니다(11절).

우리는 무엇을 알고 있습니까? 이 중요한 질문은 ‘우리는 무엇을 사랑하는가?’라는 더 기본적인 질문에 달려 있습니다. 우리의 열정은 우리의 마음을 움직이고 생각을 이끌어줍니다. 우리는 우리가 사랑하는 것을 소중히 여기며, 그것을 보호하고 더 많이 추구합니다. 우리가 진리와 지혜를 사랑한다면, 우리는 귀한 금을 찾듯 그것들을 찾을 것입니다(잠언 3:13-14; 4:7-9). 진리와 지혜가 우리를 지켜줄 것입니다. “지혜를 버리지 말라 그가 너를 보호하리라 그를 사랑하라 그가 너를 지키리라”(4:6).

무엇이 진정한 지혜입니까? 예수님은 그것이 주님 자신이라고 말씀하십니다. “나는 길이요 진리요 생명이니”(요한복음 14:6). 우리에게 가장 중요한 질문은 우리가 누구를 사랑하느냐입니다. 예수님을 사랑하면 주님의 길을 배우게 될 것입니다. 주님은 당신을 주님의 진리로 인도하심으로써 당신의 삶을 지켜 주실 것입니다.

LOVE THE TRUTH

Jack hates school. The lectures on algebra, grammar, and the periodic table bore him. But he loves building houses. His father takes him to work in the summer, and Jack can’t get enough. He’s only sixteen, but he knows about cement, shingles, and how to frame a wall. What’s the difference between school and construction? Love. Jack loves one and not the other. His love fuels knowledge.

As believers in Jesus, we’re to “love the truth” (2 THESSALONIANS 2:10). Paul says a satanic figure will use “signs and wonders” (V. 9) to deceive “those who are perishing” (V. 10). Why are they perishing? “They refused to love the truth and so be saved” (V. 10). Their failure to love the truth blinds them from knowing it. They’ll be duped (V. 11).

What do we know? That important question depends on a more basic one: what do we love? Our passions incline our heart and direct our mind. We cherish what we love. We protect it and seek more of it. If we love truth and wisdom, we’ll search for them as precious gold ( PROVERBS 3 :13-14; 4 :7-9). They’ll guard us. “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you” (4:6).

What is true wisdom? Jesus says it’s Him. “I am the way and the truth and the life” (JOHN 14:6). Our most important question is who do we love? Love Jesus and you’ll learn His way. He’ll guard your life by guiding you into His truth.

생명을 바칠 만큼 귀한 사랑

19세기 영국의 주교 윌리엄 템플은 어느 날 옥스퍼드 대학생들에게 찬송가 “주 달려 죽은 십자가”의 가사를 인용하면서 설교를 마쳤습니다. 하지만 그는 그 찬송가를 깊이 새기며 부르라고 경고했습니다. “[가사] 내용이 여러분의 진심이라면 최대한 큰 소리로 부르십시오. 그러나 여러분이 아무런 의미를 못 느낀다면 침묵하십시오. 조금이라도 의미가 있고 더 의미가 있기를 원한다면 아주 부드럽게 부르십시오.” 순간 모든 청중들이 가사를 살피느라 조용해졌습니다. 수천 명의 학생들이 속삭이는 목소리로 부르기 시작하여 마지막 구절에 이르러 “놀라운 사랑받은 나 몸으로 제물 삼겠네”를 큰 목소리로 엄숙하게 찬양했습니다.

옥스퍼드 대학생들은 예수님을 믿고 따르는 것이 우리의 모든 것을 요구하는 철저한 사랑에 순응하는 것을 의미하기 때문에 심각한 선택이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그리스도를 따르기 위해서는 우리의 모든 삶, 우리의 존재 전체를 드려야 합니다. 주님은 제자들에게 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라”(마태복음 16:24). 어느 누구도 이 선택을 가볍게 여겨서는 안됩니다.

그러나 예수님을 따르는 것은 또한 우리의 가장 심오한 기쁨으로 가는 길이기도 합니다. 우리는 주님과 함께 하는 삶이 우리가 진정으로 바라는 삶이라는 사실을 알게 될 것입니다. 이 말이 아주 역설적으로 들릴지 모릅니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님의 사랑에 응답하여 그리스도를 믿고 우리의 이기적이고 근시안적인 요구들을 포기한다면, 우리는 우리 영혼이 갈망하는 삶을 얻게 될 것입니다(25절).

LOVE WORTHY OF OUR LIFE

William Temple, a nineteenth-century English bishop, once concluded a sermon to Oxford students with the words of the hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” But he cautioned against taking the song lightly. “If you mean [the words] with all your hearts, sing them as loud as you can,” Temple said. “If you don’t mean them at all, keep silent. If you mean them even a little, and want to mean them more, sing them very softly.” The crowd went quiet as everyone eyed the lyrics. Slowly, thousands of voices began to sing in a whisper, mouthing the final lines with gravity: “Love so amazing, so divine / Demands my soul, my life, my all.”

Those Oxford students understood the reality that believing in and following Jesus is a serious choice, because it means saying yes to a radical love that demands everything from us. Following Christ requires our entire life, our whole being. He plainly told His disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (MATTHEW 16:24). No one should make this choice flippantly.

Yet, following Jesus is also the way to our deepest joy. Life with Him, we’ll discover, is the life we truly desire. It appears to be a great paradox. However, if we respond to God’s love, believe in Christ, and relinquish our selfish, shortsighted demands, we’ll find the life our soul craves (V. 25).

이방인을 사랑함

일류 재봉 기술자였던 친구의 아내는 오랜 질병으로 세상을 떠나기 전 한 가지 사랑의 계획을 세워 자신의 모든 재봉 장비를 우리 마을의 재봉 조합에 기증했습니다. 그 기증으로 새로 도착한 이민자들을 가르치는 데 필요한 재봉틀과 재단 테이블, 그 외 여러 것들이 갖춰지게 되었습니다. 그녀의 남편이 말했습니다. “옷감만 스물 여덟 상자나 되었어요. 그 물품들을 다 가지러 여성 여섯 명이 왔는데, 이민자 학생들이 기술을 배우기 위해 아주 열심히 일한다고 했어요.”

다른 사람들은 그런 새 이민자들을 달갑지 않게 표현합니다. 이민자들이 처한 어려운 상황은 논쟁거리가 되어 분열을 일으키고 있습니다.

그러나 모세는 이렇게 하나님의 관점을 제시합니다. “너는 이방 나그네를 압제하지 말라 너희가 애굽 땅에서 나그네 되었었은즉 나그네의 사정을 아느니라”(출애굽기 23:9). 더 나아가 그는 낯선 이방인들에 대한 하나님의 명령을 전해주었습니다. “너희가 너희의 땅에서 곡식을 거둘 때에... 네 포도원의 열매를 다 따지 말며 네 포도원에 떨어진 열매도 줍지 말고 가난한 사람과 거류민을 위하여 버려두라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라”(레위기 19:9-10).

하나님은 또 이렇게 선언하셨습니다. “거류민이 너희의 땅에 거류하여 함께 있거든 너희는 그를 학대하지 말고 너희와 함께 있는 거류민을 너희 중에서 낳은 자 같이 여기며 자기 같이 사랑하라 너희도 애굽 땅에서 거류민이 되었었느니라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라”(33-34절).

하나님이 기준을 정해 주셨습니다. 우리 가운데 있는 낯선 이들에게 사랑을 보여줄 수 있도록 하나님께서 우리 마음에 복을 내려 주시기를 소망합니다.

LOVING THE STRANGER

A friend’s wife, a master seamstress, made a loving plan before she passed away from a long illness. She donated all her sewing equipment to our town’s sewing guild, providing sewing machines, cutting tables, and more for classes teaching newly arrived immigrants. “I counted twenty-eight boxes of fabric alone,” her husband told us. “Six women came by to pick up everything. Their students are hard workers, eager to learn a skill.”

Others describe such newcomers in less flattering ways. The plight of immigrants has become a divisive issue.

Moses, however, issued God’s view: “Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners” (EXODUS 23:9). He further shared God’s decree regarding strangers. “When you reap the harvest of your land . . . do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God” (LEVITICUS 19:9-10).

God also declared, “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God” (VV. 33-34).

God set the standard. May He bless our hearts to show love to the strangers among us.
