예수님과 함께 하는 삶

그리스도인 의사 은티지미라는 그의 고국 르완다의 자원이 부족한 지역에서 말기 환자들을 돌보라고 하나님이 부르시는 것을 느꼈습니다. “말기 환자들은 이미 희망이 없었기” 때문에 동료들은 그들을 돌보는 일의 중요성을 알지 못했습니다. 하지만 은티지미라는 환자들과 그 가족들에게 “모든 희망이 사라진 것처럼 보였을 때 자신이 함께 함으로써 희망을 되살려 주었다” 는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 은티지미라는 “그리스도의 죽음이 생명의 근원이기” 때문에 예수님의 죽음과 생명이 우리가 죽음을 대하는 태도를 변화시킬 수 있다는 확신을 가지고 이 사역에 전념하고 있습니다.

디모데후서에서 바울 사도는 예수님이 “죽음을 폐하시고, 복음으로 생명과 썩지 않음을 환히 보이셨다”(10절, 새번역)는 사실을 알고 나서 고난에 대한 그의 이해가 어떻게 달라졌는지 증언합니다. 바울은 감옥에 갇혀 처형을 앞두고 있었지만(2:9), 예수님의 부활은 그리스도 안에 있는 구원(10절)을 다른 이들에게 전하는 그의 소명 안에 그를 굳건히 서 있게 해주었습니다. “우리가 주와 함께 죽었으면 또한 함께 살 것이요 참으면 또한 함께 왕 노릇 할 것이요”(11-12절).

예수님과 함께 죽는다는 것은 단순히 믿는 자들의 육신의 죽음을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 로마서에서 바울은 세례가 상징하는 것을 통해 믿는 자들이 예수님의 성령과 연합하여 예수님의 죽음과 부활에 동참한다고 설명합니다 (로마서 6:4-8).

예수님이 우리 안에 살아 계시므로, 우리가 설령 죽음의 공포를 마주 하더라도 우리는 그분을 위해 살며 그분을 증언할 수 있습니다.

LIVING WITH JESUS

Physician Christian Ntizimira sensed God’s calling to provide end-of-life care in under-resourced areas of his home country of Rwanda. Colleagues often didn’t see the value of such care because “these patients were already considered hopeless.” But Ntizimira found that for patients and their families, his “presence offered a rekindling of hope when all seemed lost.” Ntizimira is grounded in his work by the conviction that Jesus’ death and life can transform how we approach death because “the death of Christ is the source of life.”

In 2 Timothy, the apostle Paul testified to how the reality that Jesus “destroyed death and . . . brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (1:10) changed how he understood his suffering. Though Paul was a prisoner facing possible execution (2:9), Jesus’ resurrection grounded him in his calling—to point others to salvation through Christ (V. 10). For “if we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him” (VV. 11-12).

Dying with Jesus doesn’t just mean what happens at believers’ literal deaths. In his letter to the Romans, Paul explained that, as symbolized in baptism, believers are united with Christ’s Spirit in His death and resurrection life (ROMANS 6:4-8).

Because Christ lives in us, even when we face death’s terrors, we can live for and witness to Him.

그리스도를 중심으로 한 소통

단 8분으로 어떤 사람의 삶을 바꿀 수 있을까요? 의미 있는 만남이 드문 이 세상에서 작가 잰시 던은 8분의 전화통화가 지닌 힘에 대해서 이야기합니다. 잰시는 그런 짧은 통화를 통해 우리가 가족이나 친구들과 서로 연결될 수 있다고 생각합니다. 여러 연구에 따르면, 일주일에 짧은 통화 몇 번이 우울증과 외로움, 불안을 줄이는데 도움이 된다고 합니다. 뿐만 아니라 인간관계를 약간만 조정해줘도 우리와 다른 사람들의 안녕에 깊은 영향을 미칠 수 있다고 하는 다른 전문가들의 연구결과도 인용하고 있습니다.

이런 통찰력은 “근심이 사람의 마음에 있으면 그것으로 번뇌하게 되나 선한 말은 그것을 즐겁게 하느니라”고 한 잠언 12장 25절 말씀과 잘 들어맞습니다. 이 구절에서, 근심은 자신의 안녕이 위협받을 때 보이는 사람의 감정적 반응을 의미합니다. 근심은 또한 미래에 대한 두려움과 불확실성에서 비롯될 수도 있습니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 위로와 격려의 말은 사람들의 불안을 기쁨으로 바꾸어 진정한 삶의 길로 이끌어줄 수 있습니다(28절). 그런 말들은 사람들이 “친구를 신중히 선택하는” 데 도움이 되는 길잡이가 될 수도 있습니다 (26절).

기도하면서 누가 성경을 바탕으로 한 8분간의 위로의 말들이 필요한지 하나님께 여쭈어 보도록 합시다. 비록 짧은 시간이더라도, 이 간단한 소통 행위는 누군가의 짐을 덜어주고 그들의 하루를 밝게 하며 희망과 치유를 주기 위해 하나님이 쓰시는 불씨가 될 수 있습니다.

CHRIST-BASED CONNECTION

Could eight minutes change someone’s life? In a world where meaningful connections can be rare, author Jancee Dunn proposes the power of an eight-minute phone call. She believes such brief calls can help us connect with family and friends. Studies show that such calls a few times a week help reduce depression, loneliness, and anxiety. And Dunn cites the research of other experts who affirm that minor relationship adjustments can profoundly affect our well-being and that of others.

This insight aligns with Proverbs 12:25, which states, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” In this verse, anxiety refers to a person’s emotional response to a threat to their well-being. Being anxious can also stem from fear and uncertainty about the future. For believers in Jesus, reassuring and encouraging words can help transform others’ anxiety into cheerfulness and lead to real life (V. 28). Those words can also provide signposts to help others “choose their friends carefully” (V. 26).

Let’s pray and ask God who might need an eight-minute call with encouraging words based in Scripture. Though brief, this simple act of connection might just be the spark He uses to lighten someone’s load, brighten their day, and offer them hope and healing.

단지 예수님이 우리를 위해 무엇을 해 주실 수 있기 때문에 주님을 따른다면 그것은 “막다른 길”입니다. 그러나 ‘주님’을 위해 주님을 따르는 것, 곧 매일 죄와 자기 중심적인 삶에서 돌이켜 주님과 그분의 나라를 위해 사는 것(예수님이 27절에 표현하신 대로 우리의 ”십자가”를 지는 것)은 모든 것을 변화시킵니다. 그렇게 비용을 계산해야 합니다. 그러나 주님은 그만한 가치를 지니신 분입니다.

COUNTING THE COST

Locals call it “The Road to Nowhere,” but its official name is Lakeview Drive. It’s a scenic six-mile stretch overlooking Fontana Lake in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Bryson City, North Carolina. After the road goes through a 1200-foot-long tunnel blasted out of a granite mountainside, it abruptly stops. The government spent millions of dollars until environmental concerns discovered later ended the project.

Jesus, who was a carpenter by trade, once told a construction parable about counting the cost of following Him. “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower,” He asked. “Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” (LUKE 14:28). Another parable follows about a king who considers the cost of going to war, and it makes the same point. Speaking to the “large crowds . . . traveling” with Him (V. 25), Christ wanted them to understand that there was a cost to sincerely believing in and following Him.

Following Jesus only because of what He can do for us is a “road to nowhere.” But following Him for Him—turning daily from sin and self-focus to live for Him and His kingdom (carrying our “cross,” as He put it in v. 27)—changes everything. The cost must be counted. But He’s worth it.

성경 구절들을 노래하기

줄리는 성경 구절들을 노래하면서 매일 경건의 시간을 시작했습니다. “노래를 부르면서 내 마음과 생각이 실제로 노래 내용대로 ‘행하고’ 믿기 시작했어요!” 이렇게 하나님의 말씀을 노래하며 줄리는 자신의 목소리나 키와 같이 자신이 싫어하는 것들에 하나님의 진리의 빛이 환히 비추어지기를 바랐습니다.

줄리는 말했습니다. “아가서 1장 5절의 ‘내가 비록 검으나 아름다우니’라는 구절을 노래하기 시작했어요.” (당시의 농경문화에서는 햇볕에 그을린 여자는 아름답게 보이지 않았습니다.) 그 성경구절을 노래하자 하나님이 그녀의 생각을 바꾸어 주었고, 줄리는 불현듯 “하나님은 내가 완벽하지 않아도 사랑하신다” 는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

줄리는 구약성경의 지혜 문학에 나오는 한 아름다운 시를 노래한 것입니다. 어떤 사람은 아가서를 하나님의 백성을 향한 하나님의 사랑의 상징으로 해석하지만, 많은 사람들은 그것을 부부의 사랑을 기리는 노래로 여깁니다. 우리는 부부가 서로에게 헌신하는 아름다운 모습을 보며 친구들이 해준 다음의 말을 떠올릴 수 있습니다. “우리가 너로 말미암아 기뻐하며 즐거워하니 네 사랑이 포도주보다 더 진함이라”(4절).

SINGING THE SCRIPTURES

For her daily devotions, Julie began singing the Scriptures. “As I sang, my heart and mind actually began to do and believe what I was singing about!” Through vocalizing God’s Word in song, Julie wanted His truth to shed light on the things she disliked about herself, such as her voice and her height.

She said, “I began to sing from Song of Solomon 1:5: ‘Dark I am, yet lovely.’ ” (In that agrarian culture, a woman tanned by the sun wasn’t seen as beautiful.) Singing this Scripture passage, God changed her thoughts. Suddenly she understood: “God loves me even though I am not perfect.”

Julie sang from a beautiful poem found in the Old Testament’s Wisdom Literature. Some people interpret the Song of Songs as an allegory of God’s love for His people, but many view it as a celebration of marital love. In witnessing the beauty of the couple’s commitment to each other, we can echo the friends’ words: “We rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine” (V. 4).

However we interpret these ancient words, we can affirm with Julie that God revels in His chosen people. As He says elsewhere in the Old Testament: “You are precious and honored in my sight, and . . . I love you” (ISAIAH 43:4).

하나님을 기다리며

어떤 나라에 내전이 일어나자 정부 당국이 한 남자를 군인으로 징집했는데, 그는 “[내 나라를] 파괴하는 일에 조금도 관여하고 싶지 않다”고 하며 징집을 거부하고 그 나라를 떠났습니다. 그러나 그는 정당한 비자가 없었기 때문에 결국 다른 나라의 공항에 묶여 꼼짝 못하게 되었습니다. 그가 공항 터미널을 배회하고, 목도리를 뜨며 희망을 놓지 않고 있던 몇 달 동안, 공항 직원들이 그에게 음식을 제공해 주었고 수천 명의 사람들이 그의 트윗을 팔로우했습니다. 헤어날 길 없는 곤경에 빠진 그 남자의 사연을 듣고 캐나다의 한 공동체가 기금을 모으고, 또 그에게 직업과 살 집을 찾아 마련해주었습니다.

예레미야애가는 하나님을 기다리며 자기 백성들의 죄로 인한 하나님의 징계가 끝나기를 기다리는 예레미야의 절규를 보여줍니다. 선지자 예레미야는 신뢰할 수 있는 영원하신 하나님을 향한 믿음을 잃지 않았습니다. “기다리는 자들에게나 구하는 영혼들에게 여호와는 선하시도다”(3:25). 하나님의 사람들은 감당 못할 고난에 구원의 길이 불가능해 보일 때조차 희망을 경험할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 징계를 겸허히 받아들여야 하겠지만, 그럼에도 “혹시 희망이 있을지도 모른다”(29절, 현대인의 성경)는 사실에 매달릴 수 있습니다. 하나님을 아는 사람들은 하나님으로부터 흘러나오는 희망을 경험할 수 있습니다. “사람이 여호와의 구원을 바라고 잠잠히 기다림이 좋도다”(26절).

벗어날 해결책이나 분명한 길이 없어도 우리는 우리를 돕기 위해 그분의 신실하심을 거듭 증명해 보여주신 하나님을 기다립니다.

WAITING FOR GOD

When a country erupted in civil war, authorities conscripted a man into military service. However, he objected: “I don’t want any part in destroying [my country].” So he left it. Because he didn’t have proper visas, however, he eventually found himself stuck in another country’s airport. For months, airport employees gave the man food and thousands followed his tweets as he roamed terminals, knitted scarves, and clung to hope. Hearing of his perpetual plight a community in Canada raised money and found him a job and a house.

The book of Lamentations presents the cry of Jeremiah, who waited for God and the end of His discipline for the sins of his people. The prophet remained confident in an everlasting God who he knew could be trusted. “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him” (3:25). God’s people can experience hope even when troubles overwhelm and relief seems impossible. Though they might need to humbly accept God’s discipline, they can cling to the reality that “there may yet be hope” (V. 29). Those who know God can experience a hope that flows from Him. “It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord” (V. 26).

Without answers or any clear way of escape, we wait for the God who’s proven Himself faithful over and over again to help us.

고통받는 이를 위한 친절

2023년 8월, 미국 역사상 가장 치명적인 산불 중 하나가 하와이의 라하이나 타운을 초토화시켜 99명이 죽고 2천 채 이상의 건물이 파괴되었습니다. 재난으로 여전히 시달리고 있던 주민들은 건물을 약탈하는 도둑들과 탐욕스러운 부동산 중개인들이 땅을 차지하려는 시도에 정신적인 충격까지 더 겪어야 했습니다.

비극적인 상황을 악용하는 비도덕적인 욕망 때문에 에돔 나라는 하나님의 강력한 메시지를 들어야 했습니다. 오바댜 선지자는 대대로 이스라엘의 적인 에돔 사람들에게(에스겔 35:5) 다가올 하나님의 심판을 경고했습니다. 왜냐하면 에돔 사람들은 그들이 가진 지리적 이점을 이용하여 얻은(오바댜 1:3) 부(6절) 와 다른 나라들과의 동맹(7절), 지혜(8절), 군사력(9절)으로 약자들을 착취했기 때문입니다. 오바댜는 또 이스라엘이 포로로 잡혀가자 에돔 사람들이 반겼던 태도를 질책했습니다. 에돔은 연민을 느끼기보다 오히려 이스라엘의 집들을 약탈하고 패망한 도시에서 승리의 행진을 했습니다(12-13절).

라하이나의 주민들은 파렴치한 행동들을 겪었지만, 또한 그 섬의 교회들이 대피소가 되어 쉼터와 따뜻한 음식과 비상물품을 나눠주는 친절도 경험했습니다.

누군가가 고통받을 때, 우리도 비슷한 선택에 마주하게 됩니다. 우리는 다른 사람들의 손실로부터 이득을 얻으려고 할 수도 있고, 아니면 라하이나의 교회들처럼 하나님이 원하시는 대로 친절과 관대함으로 반응할 수 있습니다.

KINDNESS FOR THE SUFFERING

One of the deadliest wildfires in US history decimated the town of Lahaina, Hawaii, in August 2023, killing ninety-nine people and destroying more than two thousand buildings. Still reeling from the devastation, residents experienced additional trauma when some looters pillaged buildings and greedy realtors attempted to gobble up land.

The corrupt desire to take advantage of tragic circumstances is the backdrop of a strong message from God to the nation of Edom. The prophet Obadiah warned the Edomites, Israel’s enemies for generations (EZEKIEL 35:5), of God’s coming justice because the Edomites used their geographic advantage (OBADIAH 1:3) and acquired wealth (V. 6), alliances with other nations (V. 7), wisdom (V. 8) and military strength (V. 9) to exploit the weak. Obadiah also rebuked the way Edom gloated as Israel was sent into captivity. Instead of compassion, Edom looted Israelite homes and marched through defeated cities in victory (VV. 12-13).

Although Lahaina residents saw despicable actions, they also experienced kindness when churches on the island became hospitality centers offering shelter, hot meals, and emergency supplies.

When someone is suffering, we face a similar choice. We can try to benefit from their loss. Or we can respond in the way God desires, like the churches in Lahaina, with kindness and generosity.

제가 어렸을 때 할머니는 가을마다 제이씨 페니 백화점의 크리스마스 카탈로그를 받으셨습니다. 나는 열렬히 기뻐하며 그 속에 있는 놀라운 사진들에 빠져들었습니다.

요즘은 그런 이미지들이 우리의 스마트폰에 매일 올라옵니다. 그것들은 우리의 희망과 바람을 분석한 알고리즘에 따라 구분되어 우리 각 개인에 맞게 설정된 이미지들이기 때문에 그 속에 푹 빠져들기 쉽습니다. 최근, 전문가들은 이 디지털 현상을 ‘드림스크롤링’이라고 명명했습니다. 원폴 회사가 실시한 설문조사에 따르면 미국 스마트폰 이용자들은 평균적으로 하루에 두 시간 이상 드림스크롤한다고 합니다! 우리의 마음을 사로잡는 이미지들이 마치 우리가 이것 하나만 가져도 모든 게 다 좋을 것이라는 희망과 믿음을 불러일으키고 있습니다.

이에 반하여 성경은 우리에게 물질에 대한 열망을 버리라고 권합니다. 베드로전서 1:3-4은 우리에게 “[하나님의] 많으신 긍휼대로 예수 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 부활하게 하심으로 말미암아 우리를 거듭나게 하사 산 소망이 있게 하시며 썩지 않고 더럽지 않고 쇠하지 아니하는 유업을 잇게 하신다”고 말합니다. 베드로는 우리의 일시적인 갈망과 우리를 ‘진정’ 만족시켜줄 어떤 것에 대한 약속, 곧 하나님의 은혜에 소망을 두는 것을 대조하고 있습니다. 나중에 그는 이렇게 덧붙여 말합니다. “예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 너희에게 가져다주실 은혜를 온전히 바랄지어다”(13절).

솔직히 나도 드림스크롤하는 사람입니다. 하지만 나는 하나님이 주시는 더 큰 소망에 기대는 법을 점차 배워 나가 내 소망을 온전히 하나님께 둘 수 있도록 도와달라고 하나님께 간구하고 있습니다.

BEYOND DREAMSCROLLING

Each fall in my youth, my grandmother got the JCPenney Christmas catalog. With a zealous delight, I spirited it away to ponder its marvelous images.

These days, those images show up on our smartphones daily—the algorithmic distillation of our hopes and dreams, a personalized feed tailored to us. It’s easy to get lost in them. Recently, experts have named this digital phenomenon dreamscrolling. A survey conducted by OnePoll indicates that the average U.S. smartphone user dreamscrolls more than two hours a day! The images that tantalize our hearts invite us to hope, to believe, that if we just had this one thing, it would all be good.

Scripture, in contrast, invites us to relinquish our grip on material things. In 1 Peter 1:3-4, we read, “In [God’s] great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.” Peter contrasts our temporal yearnings with the promise of something that will satisfy: placing our hope in God’s grace. Later, he adds, “Set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming” (V. 13).

Truth? I’m a dreamscroller. But I’m asking God to help me gradually learn to lean into His bigger hope, to set my desire fully on Him.

섬광처럼 각인된 기억

1941년 초겨울이었습니다. 주일 예배가 막 끝나고 할아버지가 가족이 다니는 북부 시골의 작은 교회에 잠시 머무는 동안, 아버지와 형제들은 먼저 멀지 않은 거리를 걸어서 집으로 돌아갔습니다. 할아버지가 눈 덮인 언덕을 올라 농가에 도착했을 때, 할아버지는 울고 계셨습니다. 진주만이 폭격당했다는 뉴스를 교회에서 들었기 때문이었습니다. 아버지를 포함한 아들들이 징병될 것을 염려해 우신 것입니다. 아버지는 항상 그 순간을 생생하고 자세하게 기억하셨습니다.

연구자들은 그런 현상을 “섬광처럼 각인된 기억”이라고 부르는데, 순간적 으로 우리 마음에 새겨지는 것을 말합니다. 9.11 테러나 소중한 사람을 잃었던 날을 생각해 보십시오. 또 가장 기뻤던 순간도 떠올려 보십시오.

예수님의 제자들이 가졌을 섬광처럼 각인된 기억들을 상상해 보십시오. 제자들은 예수님의 여러 가지 기적들을 계속해서 경험했습니다. 그런데 갑자기 대참사가 닥쳤습니다. 하나님의 아들 예수님이 체포되어 십자가에 못 박힌 것입니다. 그러나 그러고 나서 주님이 부활하셨습니다! 막달라 마리아가 소식을 전하기 위해 제자들에게 달려갔습니다. “내가 주님을 보았어요!”(요한복음 20:18, 현대인의 성경). 하지만 제자들은 두려움에 몸을 숨기고 그 말을 믿지 않았습니다 (누가복음 24:11). “예수께서 오사 가운데 서서”(요한복음 20:19) 그들에게 말씀 하시자 그제서야 “제자들이 기뻐하였습니다”(20절).

FLASHBULB MEMORIES

Early winter 1941. The Sunday service had just concluded. As their father lingered at the little north-country church, my dad and his siblings walked the short distance home. When their father came up the snowy hill to the farmhouse, he was crying. He’d just learned Pearl Harbor had been bombed. His sons—my dad included—would be going to war. Dad always recalled the moment in vivid detail.

Researchers call such events “flashbulb memories”—moments seared into our minds. Think of 9/11, or the day you lost someone close. Think too of your most joyous experience.

Imagine the flashbulb memories of Jesus’ disciples. They witnessed miracle after miracle. Suddenly catastrophe struck. The Son of God was arrested and crucified. But then, resurrection! Mary Magdalene hurried to tell the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” (JOHN 20:18). Still, the disciples hid in fear. They didn’t believe the news (LUKE 24:11), not until “Jesus came and stood among them” (JOHN 20:19). Then, “The disciples were overjoyed” (V. 20).

John recorded some of those moments, saying, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (V. 31). “Flashbulb memories” with eternal significance.

하나님을 경외하는 여인

잊지 못할 로지의 생일 축하 파티였습니다. 음식도 훌륭했고 식탁의 대화도 즐거웠으며 첫 손자가 함께한 것은 금상첨화였습니다! 하지만, 이 모든 좋은 것들도 두 아들이 로지에게 바친 헌사에 비하면 아무것도 아니었습니다. 로지의 결혼 생활은 오래가지 못했지만, 싱글맘으로 훌륭하게 아들들을 키웠습니다. 아들들의 찬사는 로지가 자녀에게 필요한 것들을 위해 얼마나 최선을 다했는지 말해주었습니다. 특히 작은 아들의 말은 아들들을 향한 로지의 마음가짐을 가장 잘 보여주었습니다. “어머니는 하나님을 경외하는 분입니다.”

잠언 31:10-31은 독자들에게 가정에서 하나님을 경외함으로 비롯된 지혜가 어떤 것인지 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 하나님을 경외함(30절)은 하나님을 겸손한 마음으로 존경하는 것이며, 믿음직스럽게 행동하고(11-12절), 열심히 일하며 검소한 것입니다(13-19절). 그리고 현명한 여인이란 “가정을 먼저” 생각하면서도 (21-28절), “가정만”을 돌본다는 의미는 아닙니다. 그는 소외된 자들의 필요를 채워주는 일에도 관심을 갖습니다(20절).

로지처럼 하나님을 경외하는 여인들의 삶은 특히 그들과 함께 사는 사람들 눈에 드러나지 않을 수 없습니다(28절). 그 여인들과 가장 가까이 있는 사람들이 그들을 칭찬하는 것은 놀라운 일이 아닙니다. 하나님을 경외하는 예수님의 제자가 되고 싶습니까? 그렇게 해달라고 하나님께 도움을 청하지 않으시겠습니까? 그 기도가 응답될 때, 더군다나 어려운 상황 속에서 그 기도가 응답될 때 놀라지 마십시오.

A GOD-FEARING WOMAN

Rosie’s birthday celebration was unforgettable. The food was tasty, the table banter was fun, and the presence of her first grandson was icing on the cake! These good things, however, paled in view of her two sons’ tributes to her. Though Rosie’s marriage didn’t last, her exceptional skills as a single mom marked her sons. Their accolades reflected how she did everything possible to provide for their needs. The younger son’s comment best captured Rosie’s posture before them: “She is a God-fearing woman.”

In Proverbs 31:10-31 readers get to see what fear-informed wisdom looks like in the home. The fear of the Lord (V. 30), which is a humble reverence for God, compels one to be trustworthy (VV. 11-12) and hardworking and thrifty (VV. 13-19). And, while the wise woman possesses a “home first” attitude (VV. 21-28), that doesn’t mean “home only.” Meeting the needs of outsiders also gets attention (V. 20).

As with Rosie, the lifestyles of God-fearing women don’t go unnoticed—especially among those who live with them (V. 28). It’s not surprising when those closest to them sing their praises. Want to be a God-fearing follower of Jesus? Why not ask God for His help? And don’t be surprised when those prayers are answered—even in challenging circumstances.

RADICAL MISSION

Diognetus, a second-century pagan, noticed that followers of Christ “day by day increase more and more.” This was despite regular persecution they endured under the hand of the Romans. He asked a believer in Jesus why this was true. In a document we know as the Letter to Diognetus, that early church father replied to him, “Do you not see that the more of them are punished, the greater becomes the number of the rest? This does not seem to be the work of man: this is the power of God.”

As Jesus gave His final words to His disciples before ascending into heaven, they could little imagine the growth the church would experience in the coming centuries. He told them, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (MATTHEW 28:19). This has become known as the Great Commission, but using this phrase to describe Christ’s final words to His disciples can make it feel burdensome. In reality, this is what He calls all those who follow Him to do: As we go about our day, make disciples. We don’t have to go to the ends of the earth; the message will travel wherever we carry it with us.

Don’t be discouraged by the difficulties of the moment. Jesus also said, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (V. 20). We take Him with us everywhere we go.
