그리스도와 함께하는 우리의 미래

아빠의 평생 꿈은 스위스를 방문하는 것이었습니다. 그러던 아빠가 전두측두엽 치매 진단을 받자 엄마는 아빠가 아직 몸이 괜찮을 때 함께 여행을 가기로 했습니다. 엄마는 “어느 날 티틀리스 산 주변에 눈이 날릴 때” 아빠가 정말로 기뻐하는 모습을 보았다고 하면서 “그것은 꿈을 다 이룬 것 같은 기쁨이었다”고 했습니다. 하지만 나중에 아빠가 “그런데 여기가 어디야?”라고 물었을 때, 엄마는 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

아빠는 지금 스위스에 다녀온 것도 모르지만 엄마는 “거기 간 것은 참 잘한 일이었다”라고 했습니다. “적어도 한 순간이라도 아빠가 정신이 돌아와 행복해 하셨잖아.”

하나님은 우리가 다시는 기쁨을 빼앗기지 않을 때가 올 것이라고 확실히 말씀하십니다. 예수님 안에 있는 소망 때문에 우리는 죄와 사망에서 해방될 “새 하늘과 새 땅”을 기다릴 수 있습니다(요한계시록 21:1; 로마서 5:12). 그 완벽한 세상에서 하나님은 “모든 것을 새롭게”하실 것입니다(요한계시록 21:5). “모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라”(4절). 우리가 지금 겪는 고난은 모두가 일시적인 것입니다. 하나님은 어느 날 “이전 것은 기억되거나 마음에 생각나지 아니할 것”이라고 약속하십니다(이사야 65:17). 그것은 영원히 ‘사라질’ 것입니다.

언젠가 우리가 하나님 앞에 가면(요한계시록 21:3) 나는 기쁨에 찬 우리 아빠의 얼굴을 볼 것입니다. 그때의 기쁨은 영원할 것입니다.

OUR FUTURE WITH CHRIST

Visiting Switzerland had been my dad’s lifelong dream. After his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, my mom decided to go with him while he was still physically able. “One day, with the snow blowing around us on Mount Titlis,” she said, “I saw the profound joy in your father’s face. It was the joy of a dream come true.” Later, however, my mom’s tears flowed when my dad asked, “Where are we again?”

My dad may have forgotten he was in Switzerland, but “the visit was worth it,” my mom said. “At least for one moment, he knew, and he was happy.”

God reassures us of a time when joy will never be taken away from us again. Because of our hope in Jesus, we can look forward to “a new heaven and a new earth” (REVELATION 21:1), where we’ll be free from sin and death (ROMANS 5:12). In this perfect world, God will make “everything new” (REVELATION 21:5). “ ‘He will wipe every tear from [our] eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (V. 4). Whatever suffering we experience now is temporary. God promises that one day “the former things will not be remembered” (ISAIAH 65:17). They will forever be no more.

I know that one day, when we’re with God (REVELATION 21:3), I’ll see profound joy on Daddy’s face. This time, it will stay.

하나님의 영광과 위엄

런던의 궁정연회장(Banqueting House)의 천장은 대단합니다. 이것은 찰스 1세 국왕이 자신과 가족의 통치를 영화롭게 하려고 의뢰하여 피터 폴 루벤스 경이 1629년부터 1634년까지 그린 것입니다. 한 그림에서는 미네르바 여신이 찰스 왕의 아버지인 제임스 1세 왕의 업적을 기리고 있습니다. 다른 그림에서는 제임스 왕이 독수리 날개에 실려 하늘로 옮겨지고 있습니다. 연회에 온 손님들은 천장을 올려다보면서 찰스 왕 부자는 정말로 신적인 존재라는 분명한 메시지를 받게 됩니다.

GOD’S GLORY AND MAJESTY

The ceiling of London’s Banqueting House is magnificent. Painted by Sir Peter Paul Rubens between 1629 and 1634, it was commissioned by King Charles I to glorify his family’s reign. In one painting, the goddess Minerva celebrates the achievements of Charles’ father, King James I. In another, James is carried to heaven on the wings of an eagle. Gazing up at the ceiling, banquet guests got a clear message: Kings like Charles and his father were virtually divine.

In the prophet Isaiah’s day, the king of Babylon felt similarly about himself. Here was a king who longed to “ascend to the heavens” and “sit . . . on the mount of assembly,” where the gods were thought to reign (ISAIAH 14:13). Instead, Isaiah prophesied that this king would fall (VV. 3-4), being “brought down to the realm of the dead” (V. 15) without even a tomb to be remembered by (VV. 18-19). Charles I met a similar fate. In an ironic twist, he was marched beneath the very ceiling depicting his supposed divinity before being executed outside Banqueting House in 1649.

It’s a sad fact that has repeated through time: Powerful people who claim divine glory for themselves will one day discover how human they are. For there is only one who is worthy of reigning from heaven, and all power, glory, and majesty are His alone (1 CHRONICLES 29:11).

서로 나누는 마음

멜라니에게 두통이 처음 생겼을 때 의사들이 뇌하수체에서 양성 종양을 발견했습니다. 자두 크기만한 종양을 2003년에 수술로 제거했고, 2006년에 재발해 다시 제거했습니다. 그러다 2017년에 세 번째로 재발했을 때에는 방사선 치료를 받았고 이로 인해 머리가 빠졌습니다. 그러자 멜라니의 스물일곱 살 난 아들 매트는 어머니에게 가발을 만들어 주려고 자기 머리를 기르기로 했습니다.

매트의 이타적 사랑의 행동은 한 사람이 자기의 능력과 자원으로 다른 사람과 공동체의 필요를 채울 수 있음을 보여줍니다. 바울은 빌립보 교인들에게 보낸 편지에서 서로 나누는 마음의 아름다움을 이렇게 썼습니다. 바울의 “괴로움에” 동참했던 빌립보의 성도들은 그가 “궁핍에 처했을 때 한 번뿐 아니라 두 번이나” 쓸 것을 보냈습니다”(빌립보서 4:14, 16). 선물을 받은 바울은 하나님께서 자신의 필요를 충분히 채워주신 것을 감사했습니다.

RECIPROCAL GENEROSITY

When Melanie began having regular headaches, her doctors discovered she had a benign tumor in her pituitary gland. The tumor was about the size of a plum and was surgically removed in 2003 and again in 2006 when it recurred. Then in 2017, when it came back a third time, Melanie underwent radiation treatment instead, which caused her to lose her hair. Her twenty-seven-year-old son, Matt, decided to grow out his own hair to make a wig for her.

Matt’s selfless, loving act illustrates how one person’s abilities and resources can supply the needs of another person or group. Paul highlights the beauty of such reciprocal generosity in his letter to the Philippians. The believers in Philippi had shared in his “troubles” and “sent . . . aid more than once when [he] was in need” (PHILIPPIANS 4:14, 16). Having received their gifts, Paul recognized that God had provided amply for his needs.

Our willingness to share with one another is often the conduit of God’s provision in our lives. Sometimes we’re in a position to give of our time, talent, or treasure; other times we’re in need ourselves and must rely on the support of another. Through His Spirit working in us, our gifts are “pleasing to God” and a manifestation of our shared life in the body of Christ (V. 18).

우리가 누구인지 기억하기

한 식당 직원이 쓰레기통 옆에서 의식을 잃은 남자를 발견했습니다. 햇볕에 심하게 탄 그 사람은 개미에게 물리고 둔기에 맞은 자국도 있었습니다. 그는 자기가 누구인지도 기억을 못했습니다. 나중에 스스로를 “벤자민 카일”이라고 이름지은 그는 이런 상태로 10년을 넘게 살았습니다. 일도 못 하고 복지 혜택도 못 받는 그는 무엇보다 자신의 과거를 되찾을 수가 없었습니다. 그러던 중 그를 모르는 어느 단체에서 유전자 검사와 추적조사를 통해 그의 신분을 알아내는 일에 나섬으로 그의 치유가 시작되었습니다. 그는 “저에게도 살아온 과거가 있습니다. 그냥 하늘에서 뚝 떨어진 건 아니지요.”라고 했습니다.

REMEMBERING WHO WE ARE

A restaurant employee discovered an unconscious man beside a dumpster. He was sunburned, bitten by ants, and showed signs of blunt force trauma. He had no memory of who he was. The man, later self-named “Benjamin Kyle,” lived in limbo for more than a decade. He couldn’t work, collect benefits, or even reclaim his past. His healing began when a community of strangers helped him rediscover his identity through genetic testing and investigation. “I have a history,” he said. “I’m not just some stranger that materialized out of thin air.”

The story of Ruth in the Bible can also be seen as one of rediscovered belonging. After losing her husband and leaving her homeland, she chose to bind herself to her mother-in-law Naomi and her people. She said, “Where you go I will go . . . . Your people will be my people and your God my God” (RUTH 1:16). Ruth connected her identity and destiny to that of Naomi and her people in life and in death. She was “determined to go with her” (V. 18)—prioritizing community over clarity, belonging over certainty. In doing so, she stepped into God’s redemptive story and is remembered forever as part of the lineage of Christ (4:18-22; MATTHEW 1:3-5).

When we as believers in Jesus forget who we are—or when life’s pain leaves us disoriented—God often uses community to reconnect us with our most authentic identity. In Him we’re beloved, chosen, and known.

푸른 패이스트리(Pastries)와 하나님의 공급

손자가 우리 집에 와서 자던 날 침대에 눕혀 재울 때였습니다. 성경의 책갈피를 따라 시편 23편을 열자 아이는 “우리 이거 벌써 읽었어요”라며 다른 구절을 읽고 싶어했습니다. 우리가 여기서 새로운 것을 더 배우자고 하니까 손자는 소리를 내어 이렇게 읽었습니다. “여호와는 나의 목자시니 내게 부족함이 없으리로다. 그가 나를 푸른 패이스트리에 누이시며.” 푸른 패이스트리(green pastries), 빵이라구?! 나는 그 단어가 빵을 뜻하는 패이스트리(pastries)가 아니라 풀밭(패스처스, pastures)이라고 설명해 주었습니다. 몇 시간 전 아이는 빵집 진열대 앞에서 맛있는 것을 고르고 있었습니다. 그가 그렇게 말한 것이 이해가 되었습니다. 그에게 빵집은 휴식과 즐거움이 있는 곳을 의미했던 것입니다.

시편 23편은 우리에게 매우 익숙하다 보니 그 깊은 의미를 놓칠 수도 있습니다. 목동 일에 능숙했던 다윗 왕은 평생 동안 좋은 형편(5-6절)과 어려운 형편(4절) 속에서 하나님이 공급하신 것을 기록했습니다. 그는 선하신 하나님께서 동행하시며, 우리가 새 힘을 얻고, 다가올 일을 준비할 수 있는 곳으로 인도하신다고 말합니다. “푸른 풀밭”(1절)과 “쉴 만한 물가”(2절)는 양들에게 그러한 안식처이고 우리는 하나님의 양입니다(1절).

손자가 천진스럽게 해석하는 것을 보면서 나는 하나님께서 나에게 주시는 “푸른 풀밭들”, 곧 하나님이 나를 회복시키시는 일상생활 속의 휴식과 즐거움이 있는 장소들에 눈을 뜨게 되었습니다. 황금빛 노을. 푸르른 들판. 조용한 공간. 즐거움이 풍겨 나오는 푸른 빵들의 진열대. 시편 23편을 다시 읽게 되어 정말 기쁩니다!

GREEN PASTRIES AND GOD’S PROVISION

I was putting my grandson to bed during a sleepover. When his Bible bookmark opened to Psalm 23, he objected, “We already read this one.” After I suggested we might learn something new, he read aloud, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastries.” Green pastries?! I explained that the word was pastures, not pastries. Hours earlier, he’d stood before a bakery shelf, selecting treats. His interpretation came into focus: To him, a bakery conveyed a place of rest and enjoyment.

Psalm 23 may be so familiar to us that we miss its deep offering. David, a king well acquainted with shepherding, describes God’s provision over a lifetime of things both idyllic (VV. 5-6) and challenging (V. 4). He points out that our good God leads us to places where we can partake of His presence, be rejuvenated, and prepare for what will come. “Green pastures” (V. 1) and “quiet waters” (V. 2) are such dwellings for sheep, and we are God’s sheep (V. 1).

My grandson’s innocent interpretation opened my eyes to the “green pastures” God provides for me—places of rest and enjoyment in everyday life where He restores me. A gold-hued sunset. A verdant field. A quiet corner. A bakery shelf of green pastries, wafting out delight. I’m so glad we read Psalm 23 again!

기도로 하나님께 달려가기

아드리안 시만카스는 칠레의 마젤란 해협에서 아버지와 함께 카약을 타고 있었습니다. 그때 나타난 혹등고래가 스물네 살의 그를 입을 벌려 삼켰습니다. 아드리안은 한 언론 매체에 “그 순간 죽었다고 생각했다”고 말했습니다. 그런데 몇 초 후 고래는 아드리안을 차가운 물속으로 토해냈습니다. 구명조끼 덕분에 수면 위로 떠올랐고, 그의 아버지가 그를 안전한 곳으로 구조했습니다.

구약의 선지자 요나도 거대한 바다 생물을 만났습니다. 요나는 이스라엘의 적이었던 니느웨 사람들에게 회개의 메시지를 전하라는 하나님의 지시를 거부하고 니느웨와 반대 방향으로 가는 배에 올랐습니다. 배가 폭풍우를 만나자 요나는 선원들에게 자신을 바다에 던지라고 했습니다(요나 1:11-12, 15). “여호와께서 이미 큰 물고기를 예비하사 요나를 삼키게 하셨으므로 요나가 밤낮 삼 일을 물고기 뱃속에 있으니라”(17절). 하나님을 피해 도망치던 요나가 이제 “물고기 뱃속에서 그의 하나님 여호와께 기도하여”(2:1) 부르짖었습니다.

하나님은 요나의 간구를 들으시고 그를 구해내셨습니다(10절). 그리고 요나는 니느웨 사람들에게 말씀을 전했고 그들은 회개했습니다(3:8-10).

큰 물고기 뱃속에 있던 요나의 간구를 들으신 하나님께서는 우리가 어디에 있든지 우리의 부르짖음을 들으시고 우리를 구하실 수 있습니다. 우리의 부르짖음에 응답하시는 하나님으로부터 도망할 것이 아니라 기도로 그분께 달려갑시다.

RUNNING TO GOD IN PRAYER

One moment Adrián Simancas was kayaking in the Strait of Magellan in Chile with his father. The next, the twentyfour- year-old was engulfed in the mouth of a humpback whale. “I thought I was dead,” Adrián told a news outlet. After a few seconds, the whale released Adrián into the frigid waters. His life vest caused him to float to the water’s surface, and his father helped him to safety.

The Old Testament prophet Jonah also had an encounter with a large sea creature. Jonah refused to follow God’s directive to preach a message of repentance to the Israelites’ enemies, the Ninevites, so he boarded a ship in the opposite direction of Nineveh. When the ship got caught in a storm, Jonah convinced the crew to throw him overboard (JONAH 1:11-12, 15). “Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights” (V. 17). Jonah went from fleeing from God to crying out to Him: “From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God” (2:1).

God heard Jonah and rescued him (V. 10). Then Jonah preached to the Ninevites, and they repented (3:8-10).

If God could hear Jonah’s plea from inside a big fish, He can hear us and rescue us from wherever we are. Instead of running from God, let’s run to Him in prayer, knowing that He will answer us when we cry out to Him.

힘겨운 짐을 뜻하는 “목에 두른 알바트로스 새”라는 표현은 영국의 시인 새뮤얼 콜리지의 유명한 시 “옛적 어느 뱃사람의 노래”에서 가져온 표현입니다. 이 시에서는 한 선원이 무해하고 친근한 알바트로스 새를 총으로 쏴 죽입니다. 선원들은 그 사람의 잔인한 행위가 항해에 액운을 불러왔다고 믿고, 그 벌로 죽은 새를 그의 목에 걸고 다니게 합니다.

당신의 삶에도 이렇게 목에 걸린 무거운 짐같이 후회되는 일이 있습니까? 우리 모두에게는 어떻게 해서든 되돌리고 싶은 일들이 있습니다. 그런 일들은 우리에게 무거운 죄책감과 후회되는 마음을 영원히 지고 가야하는 저주처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다.

그러나 아무리 아프고 후회되는 일이라도 우리 마음은 하나님의 은혜로 자유롭게 될 수 있습니다. 누구에게나 죄가 있지만(요한1서 1:8, 10) 우리의 짐을 정직하게 하나님께 고백하면 우리는 “우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것”이라는 약속을 받았습니다(9절). 하나님의 은혜가 충만하면 그 빛과 사랑이 우리를 통해 흘러가고(2:10) 우리 주변 사람들을 마음껏 사랑하게 하십니다(3:14).

콜리지의 시에서 고통받던 그 뱃사람도 결국은 이 은혜를 경험합니다. 피조물을 향한 하나님의 사랑이 그의 마음에 밀려와 기도하게 하자, 알바트로스는 그의 목에서 떨어져나가 “납덩이가 물속으로 가라앉듯” 영원히 사라졌습니다.

FREEDOM IN GOD’S LOVE

If you’ve ever heard the expression “albatross around my neck”—a phrase referring to a tiresome burden—you’ve heard an allusion to English poet Samuel Coleridge’s famous poem “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” In the poem, a sailor shoots and kills a harmless, friendly albatross. The crew believes the mariner’s cruel deed curses their voyage and forces him to wear the dead bird around his neck as punishment.

Are there regrets in your life that feel like a heavy weight around your neck? All of us have moments we’d do anything to take back. It can feel like we’re cursed to carry the weight of our guilt and regret forever.

Yet God’s grace can free our hearts from even the most painful regret. We all have sin (1 JOHN 1:8, 10), but when we honestly confess our burdens to God, we’re promised he “will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (V. 9). As His grace rushes in, His light and love can flow through us (2:10), freeing us to love those around us (3:14).

In Coleridge’s poem, the tormented mariner also eventually experiences this grace. When love for God’s creation rushes into his heart and compels him to pray, the albatross falls off his neck, vanishing forever “like lead into the sea.”

음악의 힘

THE POWER OF MUSIC

On November 21, 1915, the hope of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his twenty-seven crew members sank, along with their ship Endurance, into the darkness below the Antarctic ice. They were stranded thousands of miles from home. Later, the crew shared several things that aided their survival, including a banjo. Embarking on their brutal trek, Leonard Hussey (the expedition’s meteorologist) was the only person allowed more than two pounds of personal gear. He was allowed to bring his twelve-pound Windsor banjo. “It’s vital mental medicine,” Shackleton told Hussey, “and we shall need it.” The crew’s journals explained the power of Hussey’s music. “The banjo does . . . supply brain food,” wrote one sailor. Another reflected on “Hussey’s indispensable banjo.”

The Bible presents music as one of God’s immense gifts, a way His healing and comfort enter the human heart. In the tragic story of King Saul, we hear how (due to his disobedience) he was oppressed by an “evil spirit” (1 SAMUEL 16:14). And what did Saul’s attendants believe the king needed to provide relief? Music. So they found young David with his harp: “David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him” (V. 23).

Music offers more than mere entertainment. It can bring joy, renew hope, and comfort weary souls. It’s truly one of God’s powerful gifts.

우리의 몫, 하나님의 몫

싱가포르에서는 정부가 기부금 매칭 제도를 통해 사람들이 좋은 일을 돕고 나서는 것을 장려합니다. 특정 자선 단체들에 기부하면 정부가 그 금액과 같거나 더 많은 금액을 “추가”로 보조합니다. 이렇게 사람들이 기부한 것을 효과적으로 늘려서 더 적극적으로 기부에 참여하도록 돕고자 하는 취지입니다.

이렇게 양면적으로 접근하는 것은 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 제자의 삶을 살면서 어떻게 하나님의 거룩함의 기준에 이르는지를 생각나게 합니다. 바울은 빌립보서에서 “너희 구원을 이루라”(2:12)고 하며 “달려가라”(3:12, 14)고 말합니다. 동시에 그는 “너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하신다”고 강조합니다(2:13).

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 선행이나 성과로 하나님과의 올바른 관계가 성립되는 것이 아닙니다. 그러나 우리의 영적 성장에는 파트너십이란 것이 있습니다. 영적 성장은 우리의 마음과 노력을 필요로 하지만, 그럼에도 그것은 인간의 힘으로만 되는 것이 아닙니다. 은혜로 우리를 구원하신 하나님은 우리를 거룩하게, 곧 하나님을 위해 구별되도록 부르시며, 우리는 이에 진실함과 감사함으로 응답합니다. 우리가 하나님께 순종하며 기쁘시게 하려고 노력할 때 하나님께서 그것을 가능하도록 도우십니다. 하나님은 우리가 다른 길로 갈 때에 깨달음을 주시고(빌립보서 3:15), 유혹을 이겨낼 힘을 주시며(고린도전서 10:13), 하나님 보시기에 선한 일을 할 힘을 주십니다(에베소서 2:10).

OUR PART, GOD’S PART

In Singapore, the government encourages people to support good causes by donation-matching. It “tops up” donations to specific charities by contributing an equal amount or more. By effectively multiplying people’s contributions, it hopes to encourage them to become more involved in charitable giving.

This two-pronged approach reminds me of how believers in Jesus are called to God’s standards of holiness in our discipleship journey. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul urges them “to work out [their] salvation” (2:12) and “press on” (3:12, 14). At the same time, he stresses that “it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (2:13).

Believers in Jesus aren’t made right with God by good works or performance. But there is an idea of partnership in our spiritual growth. It requires heart and effort on our part, yet we do not do it by human strength. Having saved us by grace, God calls us to be holy—set apart for Him—and we respond in sincerity and gratitude. As we seek to obey and please Him, He enables and helps us to do so. He shows us when we go wrong (PHILIPPIANS 3:15), gives us strength to resist temptation (1 CORINTHIANS 10:13), and empowers us to do what’s right in His eyes (EPHESIANS 2:10).

넉넉한 나눔

오스왈드 챔버스와 그의 아내 비디 챔버스는 1911년부터 1915년까지 런던에서 성경학교를 운영하며 가난한 사람들을 외면하지 않는 삶의 원칙을 이어갔습니다. 약삭빠른 런던 사람들은 이 학교가 이용만 당할 것이라 생각하며 이런 결정에 놀랐습니다. 이에 대해 오스왈드는 다른 사람들도 그렇게 할 것을 권하지는 않았지만 이렇게 말했습니다. “나의 책임은 주는 것입니다. 구하는 자는 하나님께서 보살피실 것입니다.”

GENEROUS GIVING

When Oswald and Biddy Chambers ran a Bible college in London from 1911 to 1915, they continued with their life principle of not turning away those in need. Astute Londoners were aghast at this practice, thinking the college would be taken advantage of. In response, Oswald observed, without inviting others to follow in the practice, “My responsibility is to give. God will look after who asks.”

The couple followed the example of our generous Creator. Through His instructions to Moses, God laid out gracious ways for His people to live and serve others, including the giving of their food and possessions. Moses told the Israelites at the end of every three years to “bring all the tithes” so the Levites, “foreigners, the fatherless and the widows,” could come and “eat and be satisfied” (DEUTERONOMY 14:28-29). Through the generosity of His people, God cares for the vulnerable.

The Chambers’ trust in God was so strong that they gave willingly and without question. They’d learned to “revere . . . God always” (V. 23) and receive His blessing “in all the work of [their] hands” (V. 29).

We may also feel inspired to give freely while we lean on God for wisdom and discernment. We know that God will generously lead and guide as He provides for the foreigners, the fatherless, and the widows.
