하나님을 꼭 붙들라

우리 지역 학군의 레슬링 챔피언 경기에서, 여덟 살 정도의 어린아이들이 체육관 매트 위에서 맞붙어 서로 상대를 넘어뜨려 이기기 위해 영리한 기술들을 펼쳤습니다. 옛날부터 이어져온 레슬링은 최고가 되기 위해 넘어뜨리기와 벗어나기, 누르기, 그 외 점수를 쌓는 여러 다른 기술들이 교묘하게 결합되어야 하는 운동입니다. 관중들의 인기 스타였던 한 3학년 여자아이는 그의 모든 상대보다 월등히 동작이 빨랐는데, 마치 상대를 속이듯 빨리 움직여 승리를 거머쥐었습니다.

야곱 역시 쌍둥이 형 에서의 좋은 것을 취하기 위해 그와의 “레슬링”에서 속임수를 사용하여, 아버지의 유산을 물려 받을 장자권(창세기 25:33)과 삶의 축복(27:27-40)을 그로부터 빼앗았습니다. 그러나 그 축복을 훔친 대가로 야곱은 도망하여 아버지의 집을 떠나야 했으며, 교활한 장인에게 의존하고 형의 분노를 두려워하며 살아야 했습니다.

나중에 그는 홀로 남아 밤새 한 사람과 씨름하게 되었는데, 그 상대는 바로 하나님이었습니다. 그 사람이 “날이 새려 하니 나로 가게 하라” 했지만 야곱은 “당신이 내게 축복하지 아니하면 가게 하지 아니하겠나이다”라고 대답합니다(32:26). 자신을 축복해 주기를 구하며 하나님께 매달렸던 야곱은 마침내 자신의 변화된 마음을 반영하듯 그의 이름도 바뀌게 되었습니다.

이 부요한 하나님의 축복을 얻기 위해 오직 끈질김 외에는 어떤 속임수도 필요하지 않았습니다. 야곱은 하나님과의 관계 속에서 살아가는 법을 배우고 있었던 것입니다. 하나님을 진실되게 끝까지 붙드는 것, 그것이야 말로 하나님의 축복을 받아내는 이기는 동작입니다.

HOLD ON TO GOD

At our school district’s championship wrestling match, children as young as eight grappled on gym mats, deploying clever holds to wrestle down their opponents and win. An ancient sport, wrestling demands a savvy combination of takedowns, escapes, pins, and other point-winning maneuvers to come out on top. One little third-grade girl—a crowd favorite—was simply faster than all her opponents, using swift moves that seemed to trick her rivals into defeat.

Jacob used tricky moves to get the best of his twin brother Esau, “wrestling” Esau out of his birthright to their father’s inheritance (GENESIS 25:33) and life blessing (27:27-40). But stealing the blessing kept Jacob on the run, forcing him to flee his father’s household, depend on his cunning father-in-law, and live in fear of his brother’s wrath.

Later, he found himself alone, wrestling all night with a man who was God Himself. “Let me go,” the man told Jacob, “for it is daybreak” (32:26). But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me” (V. 26). Finally Jacob was seeking a blessing of his own, holding tight to God even until his name was changed to reflect his changed heart.

No tricky moves were needed to gain this rich blessing from God—only persistence. Jacob was learning to live in relationship with God. It’s a persistent and honest hold—a winning move God will reward.

마음이 통하는 눈빛

제이슨과 피에르는 10년 동안 집 외벽을 설치하는 작업을 함께 해 왔습니다. 둘은 절친한 친구였지만 둘 다 말이 별로 없어서 일을 하면서도 거의 말을 하지 않았지만, 서로를 너무 잘 알기에 거의 문제가 되지 않았습니다. 둘은 고개를 끄덕이거나 눈빛을 주고받는 것만으로도 소통할 수 있었습니다. 작은 몸짓으로도 많은 것을 말했습니다.

시편 32편은 하나님과 시편 기자 사이의 이 같은 깊은 친밀감을 떠올려 줍니다. 한 성경 번역본은 8절을 이렇게 표현합니다. “내 눈으로 너를 인도 하리라”. 하나님은 멀리서 관망하시는 분이 아니라, 자녀와 함께 일하시는 사랑의 아버지이십니다. 이 시편은 죄의 고백으로 시작되지만(1-5절), 중심은 징벌이 아니라 하나님께서 자녀에게 바른 길을 가르치시는 사랑의 돌이킴에 있습니다(6-7절).

반면, “재갈과 굴레로 다루지 않으면 말을 듣지 않는”(9절, 현대인의 성경) 말이나 노새 같은 경우가 있습니다. 이것은 하나님의 길을 고집스럽게 반항하고 무시하는 태도입니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리는 하나님과의 깊은 친밀감을 점점 더해 가서, 그분의 부드러운 몸짓에도 조화를 맞출 수 있어야 합니다. 이 친밀감을 키우는 방법 중 하나가 성경을 읽는 것입니다. 성경을 읽으면 우리가 “성령을 따라 행하는”(갈라디아서 5:25) 데 도움이 되어 하나님께서 사랑하시는 것을 우리도 사랑하게 됩니다. 그렇게 될 때 우리는 “여호와를 기뻐하며 즐거워하게” (시편 32:11) 됩니다.

A KNOWING EYE

Jason and Pierre had worked together for a decade putting siding on houses. They were good friends, but neither was talkative. As they worked, they said hardly a word. Yet they knew each other so well that this was seldom a problem. The two could rely on the mere nod of a head or glance of the eyes to communicate. Small gestures spoke volumes.

Psalm 32 evokes this level of familiarity between God and the psalmist. One version renders verse 8 this way: “I will guide you with my eye” (nkjv). God isn’t looking from afar; He’s a loving Father working in partnership with His child. While the psalm begins with confession of sin (VV. 1-5), the focus is not on punishment but on loving redirection as God teaches His child the right path (VV. 6-7).

The other option is to be like the horse or the mule, which “must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you” (V. 9). The picture is of willful defiance and ignorance of God’s way. As believers in Jesus, we are to develop a deep intimacy with God so we’re in tune with His gentle gestures. One way we develop this intimacy is through reading the Scriptures. This helps us “keep in step with the Spirit” (GALATIANS 5:25) so we’ll love what God loves. Then we can “rejoice in the Lord and be glad” (PSALM 32:11).

하나님이 주신 선물에 감사

한 노신사가 가게에서 아이들 책가방을 한참 동안 바라보고 있다가 말했습니다. “오늘이 손녀 생일인데, 손녀가 내 선물을 좋아했으면 좋겠네요.” 그는 계산대에서 만화 그림이 있는 분홍색 책가방을 꼭 쥐고는 매우 들떠 보였습니다.

얼마 후 근처 식당에서 나는 그가 어린 여자아이와 아이 부모와 함께 있는 것을 다시 보았습니다. 아이는 선물을 열어 보더니, “나 이 만화 그림 싫어! 그리고 분홍색도 정말 싫어!” 라고 말했습니다. 아이 부모는 할아버지께 사과하라고 했지만, 아이는 계속 불평했습니다. 그 할아버지의 모습에 내 마음이 아팠습니다.

그것을 보며 나도 때때로 하나님의 선물에 어떻게 반응하는지 돌아 보았습니다. 다른 것을 달라고 불평하면서 내 앞에 있는 기적을, 곧 하나님 ‘그분 스스로’ 사랑으로 ‘나를 위해’ 주신 선물을 보지 못할 때가 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들도 비슷하게 행동했습니다. 하나님은 “내가 너희를 위하여 하늘에서 양식을 비 같이 내려주겠다”(출애굽기 16:4)는 약속을 지키셨고, “밤에 이슬이 진영에 내릴 때에 만나도 함께 내림으로”(민수기 11:9) 광야에서도 신실하게 공급해 주셨습니다.

하지만 이스라엘 백성들은 감사하기는 커녕, “이 만나 외에는 보이는 것이 아무것도 없도다”(6절)라고 하며 하나님이 사랑으로 공급해주시는 것을 오히려 불평했습니다. 그들은 겸손하게 하나님께 다른 음식을 구하는 대신, 하나님이 주신 선물에 대해 큰 소리로 불평했습니다.

나는 그날 할아버지의 상처받은 눈빛이 아직도 눈에 선합니다. 그 모습은 우리가 불평할 때 하나님 아버지도 얼마나 마음이 아프실지 생각하게 해주었습니다. 하나님이 우리에게 주신 선물에 감사하도록 합시다.

THANK GOD FOR HIS GIFTS

The elderly man was taking a long time looking at the children’s backpacks in the store. He told me, “It’s my granddaughter’s birthday. I hope she likes my gift.” At the checkout, he clutched a pink backpack with a cartoon character design. He looked excited.

Later in a restaurant, I saw him again with a little girl and her parents. When the child opened her gift, she said, “I don’t like this character! And I hate pink!” Her parents made her apologize, but she still complained. My heart broke for her grandpa.

I was reminded of how I sometimes respond to God’s gifts. I complain because I want something different, failing to see the miracle before me—that God Himself has lovingly given something for me. The Israelites behaved similarly. God had kept His promise to them: “I will rain down bread from heaven for you” (EXODUS 16:4). God’s faithful provision in the wilderness was sure: “When the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down” (NUMBERS 11:9).

But instead of being thankful, the Israelites complained about God’s expression of loving provision: “We never see anything but this manna!” (V. 6). Instead of humbly requesting other food from God, they wailed over His gift.

I still remember the hurt look in the grandfather’s eyes that day. It made me think of how our heavenly Father must feel when we complain. Let’s be grateful for the gifts He’s given us.

소중한 오늘

베트남의 골동품 전문가 팜은 유럽 여러 지역에서 수집한 교회 시계 스무 점을 소장하고 있는데, 그 대부분은 전자식 시계로 대체되어 사용하지 않게 된 것들입니다. 그 중 1750년 이탈리아에서 제작된 시계는 지금도 정확하게 작동합니다. 시계를 복원하고 보존하는 일을 즐기는 팜은 시계가 시간의 소중함과 매순간의 의미를 일깨워준다고 말합니다.

야고보서 4장에서 저자는 우리의 삶이 “잠깐 보이다가 없어지는 안개”와 같다고 말하면서(야고보서 4:14) 시간의 소중함을 인식할 것을 권면합니다. 야고보는 하나님의 뜻을 묻지 않고 “어떤 도시에 가서 거기서 일 년을 머물며 장사하여 이익을 보리라”(13절)고 계획하는 것에 대해 경고합니다. 그는 사업의 시기나 성공을 하나님께 맡기지 않는 그들이 “내일 일을 알지 못한다’(14절)고 일깨워 줍니다. 하나님을 배제한 채 스스로의 성공을 설계하는 것은 진정 교만하고 오만한 것입니다.

우리의 삶이 얼마나 짧은 지 깨닫게 되면, 미래에 대한 계획에 집착하기보다 현재의 순간을 더욱 소중히 여길 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님의 뜻과 목적에 따라 살아가고 일합니다. 그 말은 우리가 미래를 겸손히 하나님께 맡기고 무슨 일이 있든 매일 매일을 그분이 주시는 귀한 선물로 여기며 음미할 수 있다는 것을 의미합니다.

TODAY IS PRECIOUS

Vietnamese collector Pham has salvaged twenty church clocks from around Europe, many of which had been replaced with electronic versions. One clock, made in Italy, dates back to 1750 and, remarkably, still keeps time accurately. Pham enjoys restoring and preserving the timepieces, saying they remind him of how precious time is and to savor each moment.

In James 4, the writer encouraged his readers to recognize the preciousness of time by reminding them that their lives are like “a mist that appears for a little while” before vanishing (JAMES 4:14). James warned against making plans to “go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money” (V. 13) without consulting God. Instead of presuming on God for the timing and success of their ventures, he reminded them that they “do not even know what will happen tomorrow” (V. 14). Designing our own successes is actually boastful and arrogant if it leaves God out of the picture.

When we recognize the brevity of our lives, we’re able to hold our plans for the future more loosely and better embrace the present moment. We live and work according to God’s design and purpose, which means we can humbly entrust our future to Him and savor each day as the gift from Him it truly is—no matter what it may hold.

하나님이 예비하고 계시는 미래

우리는 지금 사진이나 게시물, 블로그의 글 하나하나까지 잊히지 않고 모두 인터넷에 영원히 저장될 것 같은 세상에 살고 있습니다. 그런데 한 주요 검색 엔진이 사용자가 본인의 전화번호나 집 주소 등과 같은 개인 정보 삭제를 요청할 수 있는 개인정보 보호 기능을 도입했습니다. 물론 이 기능이 인터넷상의 모든 데이터를 완전히 없애는 것은 아니지만, 노출을 현저히 줄여 사용자가 그들의 디지털 흔적을 제어할 수 있다는 느낌을 갖게 해줍니다.

과거를 “지워버린다”는 이 개념은 이사야 43:18-19에 있는 선지자의 말을 떠올려 줍니다. 하나님은 “너희는 이전 일을 기억하지 말며 옛날 일을 생각하지 말라 보라 내가 새 일을 행하리라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 구절은 이스라엘 민족이 바벨론에 포로로 끌려가 깊은 절망 속에 회복을 갈망하던 시기에 주신 말씀입니다. 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 과거의 실패나 포로의 고통 속에 머무르지 말고, 하나님이 앞으로 행하실 새로운 일을 기대하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그것은 새롭고도 더 중요한 대이동인, 바벨론에서 해방되어 고향으로 귀환하는 것이었습니다. 하나님은 과거를 단지 지우시는 것이 아니라, 소망과 목적으로 가득한 미래로 가는 “길을 내고”(19절) 계셨습니다.

우리도 실수나 후회에 얽매이지 말고, 하나님께서 예수님의 희생을 통해 우리의 과거의 죄와 후회와 수치를 “지워 주셨고”(히브리서 10:10), “[우리의] 죄를 기억하지 않으신다”(이사야 43:25)는 것을 믿어야 합니다. 하나님은 우리를 몰아 그분이 준비하고 계시는 미래를 향해 나아가게 하십니다.

THE FUTURE GOD’S PREPARING

We live in a world where the internet forgets nothing—every photo, post, and blog entry is seemingly stored forever. One major search engine, however, introduced a privacy feature allowing users to request the removal of personal data like phone numbers, home addresses, and more. While this doesn’t erase the data from the internet entirely, it significantly reduces its visibility, giving people a sense of control over their digital footprints.

This idea of “scrubbing” the past echoes the prophet’s words in Isaiah 43:18-19. God said, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing.” These verses were spoken to Israel during their exile in Babylon—a period of deep despair and longing for restoration. God commanded His people to not fixate on their past failures or the pain of captivity but to look forward to the new work He was about to do—a new and more significant exodus—their deliverance from Babylon and return to their homeland. He wasn’t just erasing the past but “making a way” (V. 19) to a future filled with hope and purpose.

Instead of dwelling on failures or regrets, let’s trust that God has “scrubbed” our past sins, regrets, and shame and— through Jesus’ sacrifice (HEBREWS 10:10)—“remembers [our] sins no more” (ISAIAH 43:25). God propels us toward the future He’s preparing.

작지만 강력한

1987년 12월 9일, 코네티컷에서 다람쥐 한 마리가 전선을 갉아먹는 바람에 미국 주식 나스닥 지수의 초대형 금융시스템이 불안정해져 마비되는 사건이 일어났습니다. 몇몇 세계적인 대기업들이 속수무책 으로 멈춰 섰고, 전 세계 경제인들은 거의 한 시간 반 동안 식은땀을 흘리며 상황을 지켜보았습니다. 단 한 마리의 끈질긴 털북숭이 다람쥐 때문에 이 모든 일이 일어난 것입니다.

성경에도 작고 보잘것 없는 것이 큰 영향을 미친 사례들이 많이 있습니다. 하나님은 미흡한 것으로도 위대한 일을 이루십니다. 요한은 “작은 보리떡 다섯 개와 작은 물고기 두 마리를 가진 소년”이 자신의 자그마한 점심을 내놓았을 때(요한복음 6:9), 예수님이 오천 명의 남자를, 여자와 아이들까지 포함하면 약 만 오천 명에 이르는 굶주린 무리를 먹이신 일을 기록하고 있습니다. 구약에는 어린 목동 다윗이 하나님을 의지하여 거인을 물리친 이야기가 있습니다(사무엘상 17장). 그리고 예수님도 하나님 나라가 “모든 씨 중에 가장 작은”(마태복음 13:32) 겨자씨와 같다고 여러 번 강조하셨습니다.

가족이나 이웃과의 당황스런 갈등 문제와 함께 전 세계의 여러 복잡한 위기들을 생각해볼 때, 우리의 작은 노력은 아무런 소용도 없는 것처럼 생각되기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 성경은 우리가 하나님과 함께 라면 아무리 작은 것도 강해질 수 있다는 것을 확신하고 하나님의 도우심으로 순종과 신뢰로 행하라고 말씀하고 있습니다(요한복음 6:10-12).

SMALL AND MIGHTY

On December 9, 1987, a squirrel chewed through a power line in Connecticut, and the Nasdaq’s vast financial machinery blinked, sighed, and went dark. Some of the world’s largest corporations stood limp and listless. Global economies watched, sweating bullets for nearly an hour and a half. All because of one tenacious, furry rodent.

Scripture tells many stories of something or someone small making a big impact. But God can turn meagerness into something mighty. John recounts how Jesus fed a hungry crowd (five thousand men, probably fifteen thousand with women and children included) when “a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish” handed over his small lunch (JOHN 6:9). In the Old Testament we remember that a young shepherd boy named David trusted God and slayed a giant (1 SAMUEL 17). And Christ repeatedly insisted that the kingdom of God is something like a mustard seed, “the smallest of all seeds” (MATTHEW 13:32).

When we ponder the many complex global crises in addition to the bewildering concerns in our own neighborhoods and families, we’re tempted to believe that our seemingly small efforts lack power. But Scripture tells us to act in obedience and trust as God helps us—assured that with Him, small things can become mighty (JOHN 6:10-12).

뼈 전쟁

1800년대 후반 미국 서부에서 공룡 뼈 발굴을 둘러싸고 ‘뼈 전쟁’이 벌어졌습니다. 두 고생물학자가 누가 가장 역사적인 발견을 한 것 인가를 놓고 서로 다툰 것입니다. 한 기자는 그 두 사람이 어떻게 “그 분야에서 상대를 이기기 위해 뇌물이나 절도, 심지어 뼈를 훼손하는 것 같은 비열한 수단들을 사용했는지” 언급했습니다. 또한 서로의 업적을 무너뜨리려던 그들의 경쟁은 결국 자신들의 명성마저 무너뜨렸다고 지적했습니다.

우리가 사는 이 망가진 세상은 갈등과 경쟁을 피할 수 없습니다. 우리가 그 갈등에 어떻게 대처하는가에 따라 우리 마음이 드러납니다. 바울은 빌립보 교회의 두 여인 사이에 있었던 갈등에 대해 듣고, “내가 유오디아에게 권하고 순두게에게 권하노니 주 안에서 같은 마음을 품으라”고 서신을 보냈습니다. 그리고 한 동역자에게는 “복음에 나와 함께 힘쓰던 저 여인들을 도우라”고 당부했습니다(빌립보서 4:2-3).

우리가 예수님을 믿는 성도들과 갈등을 겪을 때 성령님의 도우심이 필요합니다. 성령님이 우리 마음속에 일하시도록 하면 그분은 우리 안에 성령의 열매(갈라디아서 5:22-23)를 맺도록 도와 주실 것입니다. 그리고 우리 자신의 명성이 아니라 그리스도와 복음의 명성 때문에 우리는 치유와 평화를 경험하게 될 것입니다.

THE BONE WARS

In the American West in the late 1800s, the search for dinosaur bones created the Bone Wars, in which two paleontologists battled one another in their pursuit of making the most historic find. One writer noted how the two “used underhanded methods to try to outdo the other in the field, resorting to bribery, theft, and the destruction of bones.” He noted how, in trying to ruin each other’s work, both destroyed their own reputations as well.

Conflict and competition are inevitable in our broken world. How we choose to engage those conflicts reveals what’s in our hearts. Paul learned of conflict between two women in the church at Philippi and wrote, “I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.” He asked a fellow believer to “help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel” (PHILIPPIANS 4:2-3).

When we find ourselves at odds with fellow believers in Jesus, we need the Spirit’s help. As we submit to His work in our hearts, He’ll help us demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit (GALATIANS 5:22-23). We’ll experience healing and peace—if not for our own reputations, for the reputation of Christ and the gospel. BILL CROWDER

아기 예수를 찾아서

글쓰기 교사 피터 투르치는 지도를 보면 언제나 그 장소에 담긴 모험 이야기를 찾습니다. “내가 지도를 달라는 것은 곧 ‘내게 그곳 이야기를 들려주세요’라고 말하는 것과 같습니다.”라고 그는 말합니다. 나는 성탄절 기간에 “동방박사의 믿음”에 대한 주일학교 교재를 준비하면서 투르치 선생의 지도 이야기가 생각났습니다. 나는 지도를 찾아보면서, 동방박사들이 아기 예수를 찾아 약 900마일(약 1,450킬로미터)이나 되는 먼 거리를 몇 달에 걸쳐 여행한 후, 마침내 말구유에 누운 갓난아기가 아닌, 부모와 함께 집에 있으면서 걸음마를 배우는 아이였던 예수님을 만났다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 긴 여정을 마친 동방박사들은 “엎드려서 그에게 경배하였습니다”(마태복음 2:11, 새번역).

그들의 여정은 나와 주일학교 학생들에게 계획을 세워 그리스도를 보다 완전히 찾아야 한다는 사실을 일깨워주었습니다. 성경에 의하면, 동방박사들은 예루살렘에 도착했을 때 다급한 마음으로 이렇게 물었습니다. “유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시냐 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라”(2절).

먼 거리도, 위험도, 지체되는 것도 그들의 예배를 막지 못했습니다. 헤롯의 치명적인 요구는 아이러니하게도 “가서 아기에 대하여 자세히 알아보라”(8절)는 것이었습니다. 사실 동방박사들보다 더 열심히 예수님을 찾고 있었던 사람들은 없었기 떄문입니다.

우리도 그들을 본받아 열심히 예수님을 찾아 나서야 합니다. 우리가 주님을 예배할 때 우리는 하나님 아버지께서 우리 마음에 말씀하시고, 우리가 옛적 길을 떠나 주님과 동행하는 새로운 길로 인도하실 것을 기대할 수 있습니다.

SEEKING THE CHRIST CHILD

When writing teacher Peter Turchi sees a map, he looks for the adventure it holds. “To ask for a map,” he says, “is to say, ‘Tell me a story.’ ” I seized on that idea when preparing to teach a Sunday school class during Christmas on the “Faith of the Wise Men.” As I studied maps, I learned the Magi traveled some nine hundred miles—perhaps over several months—to find the Christ child, finally finding not a babe in a manger but a toddler living with His parents in a house. Their reaction after such a long trip? “They bowed down and worshiped him” (MATTHEW 2:11).

Their journey invited my students and me to plan with intention to seek Christ more fully. As Scripture tells us, when the Magi finally arrived in Jerusalem, their urgent question was: “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him” (V. 2).

Distance didn’t deter their worship. Nor did danger or delays. Herod’s deadly demand was ironic: “Go and search carefully for the child” (V. 8). Nobody had searched more diligently for Jesus than the Magi.

We can heed the example of the wise men by seeking Christ diligently too. Then, as we worship Him, we can expect our heavenly Father to speak to our hearts, leading us from old ways to new paths to journey with Him.

돌봄의 기도

한 여성이 무척 불안한 모습으로 치과 진료 의자에 앉아 있었습니다. 가족 문제로 무거운 마음이 표정에 그대로 드러난 것입니다. 이를 알아차린 치과 의사가 무슨 일인지 묻고는 이야기를 듣고 나서 말했습니다. “제가 기도해 드려도 될까요?” 잠시 후 들어온 치과위생사 역시 그를 위해 기도해 주었습니다. 두 번의 기도와 함께 진료를 모두 마친 그 여성은 진심 어린 돌봄을 받았다고 느끼며 치과를 나섰습니다.

누군가를 위해 기도하는 것은 그 사람을 진심으로 아끼는 것을 보여주는 가장 좋은 방법입니다. 기도는 우리가 알고 있는 가장 확실한 도움이신 하나님 아버지께서 그 사람의 삶에 개입해 주시기를 요청하는 것이기 때문입니다. 사무엘상 12장에서 사무엘 선지자는 두려움에 사로잡혀 초조해 하는 이스라엘 백성을 만납니다(19절). 그들은 왕을 요구하는 잘못된 선택을 하였고, 그로 인해 벌어질 일들을 두려워했습니다. 선지자는 “두려워하지 말라”(20절)고 그들을 안심시킨 후 이렇게 말하며 하나님의 선하심을 확인시켜 주었습니다. “나는 너희를 위하여 기도하기를 쉬는 죄를 여호와 앞에 결단코 범하지 아니하리라” (23절).

우리에게도 누군가를 위해 기도할 수 있는 특권과 책임이 있습니다. 때로는 조용히, 때로는 소리 내어 그들의 필요를 위해 하나님께 간구할 때 우리는 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 것입니다.

CARE PRAYER

A woman was unusually nervous as she sat in the dentist’s chair. Family burdens troubled her greatly, and it was noticeable. Her dentist sensed her anxiety and asked her about it. Her story led him to ask, “Can I pray for you?” When the dental hygienist came into the room, she also prayed for the woman. Two prayers and one completed dentist’s visit later, the woman left the office knowing that she’d truly been cared for.

Praying for others is one of the best ways for us to show that we care because it calls on the greatest resource we know—our heavenly Father—to be actively involved in the lives of others. In 1 Samuel 12, the prophet Samuel was faced with the concerns of a very nervous group of people (V. 19). The Israelites had erroneously asked for a king, and they were afraid of how it was going to go for themselves. The prophet told them to “not be afraid” (V. 20) and assured them of God’s goodness as seen in these words: “Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you” (V. 23).

We also have the privilege and calling to pray for others. Silently sometimes and out loud at other times, we honor God when we petition Him for assistance on behalf of others in need. DAVE BRANON

하나님의 아름다운 창조물

부모에게 있어 자녀를 잃는 것은 아주 고통스럽습니다. 하물며 두 자녀를 잃는 것은 상상조차 하기 어려운 일입니다! 호주의 음악가이자 작가, 배우인 닉 케이브가 바로 그런 일을 겪었습니다. 2015년, 그의 열 다섯 살 아들이 절벽에서 떨어져 세상을 떠났고, 몇 년 후에는 큰 아들마저 잃었습니다. 이런 극심한 슬픔 속에서 케이브와 그의 아내는 어떻게 살아갈 수 있었을까요? 당신이라면 어떻게 견디겠습니까?

케이브는 자신 주변의 세상에서 위안을 찾으려 했습니다. “깊은 슬픔 속에서도... 세상은 아랑곳 없이 여전히 아름다웠습니다. 나에게 세상은 그렇게 보였습니다. 세상은 그저 묵묵히, 너무도 완벽하게 아름다운 모습으로 그렇게 흘러가고 있었습니다.”

예수님도 그런 아름다움에 대해 말씀하셨는데, 하나님의 창조물인 자연의 참된 모습을 보신 것입니다. 자주 인용되는 누가복음 12장의 말씀, “백합화를 생각하여 보라”(27절)는 우리 삶의 실제적인 고통을 무시하는 말씀이 아닙니다. 사실 백합화는 아주 가혹한 현실에 대해 해독제를 제공해줌으로써 우리의 큰 비극을 오히려 기리고 있습니다. 잠시 일상을 멈추어 백합화나 까마귀(24절), 혹은 떠오르는 태양을 생각해 보십시오. 그리스도는 우리에게 이렇게 깨우쳐 주셨습니다. “들풀도 하나님이 이렇게 입히시거든 하물며 너희일까 보냐”(28절).

슬픈 일이나 상실을 겪을 때 세상의 방식으로는 견뎌낼 수 없습니다. 예수님은 이 놀라운 창조세계를 유지하시고 우리를 지극히 아끼시는 창조주 하나님을 묵상하라고 우리를 격려하십니다.

GOD’S BEAUTIFUL CREATION

For a parent, the death of a child is devastating. But to lose two of your children? Unimaginable! Yet that’s the experience of Australian musician, writer, and actor Nick Cave. In 2015, his fifteen-year-old son fell from a cliff and died. A few years later, Cave’s oldest child also died. In the grip of such overwhelming grief, how did Cave and his wife keep going? How would you?

Cave attempted to find comfort in the world around him. “It’s the audacity of the world to continue to be beautiful . . . in times of deep suffering. That’s how I saw the world,” he said. “It was just carrying on, being systemically gorgeous.”

Jesus spoke of such beauty, and He saw it for what it truly is: the creation of God. His oft-quoted words in Luke 12—“consider the lilies” (V. 27 ESV)—don’t dismiss the reality of suffering in our lives. In fact, they honor our great tragedies by offering an antidote to such harsh realities. Stop and consider the lilies or the ravens (V. 24) or the sunrise. Christ taught us, “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field . . . how much more will he clothe you” (V. 28).

In the face of grief and loss, the world’s perspective falls short. Jesus encourages us to consider our creator God who holds His audacious creation together and cares for us deeply.
