어둠 속에서 나오다

나이지리아 해안에서 20마일 떨어진 곳에서 한 예인선이 뒤집혀 침몰 했습니다. 선원 11명이 익사했지만, 이 배의 요리사였던 해리슨 오제그바 오킨은 에어 포켓(선실에 공기가 모여 있어 숨 쉴 수 있는 공간-역자 주)을 찾아 거기서 구조를 기다렸습니다. 그가 가지고 있던 음식물이라고는 콜라 한 병 뿐이었고 갖고 있던 손전등 두 개는 조난 24시간 만에 꺼져버렸습니다. 오케네는 심해의 어둠 속에 홀로 사흘을 갇혀 지냈습니다. 희망을 포기하려 할 때 시신 수습을 하던 잠수부들이 선체 깊은 곳에 웅크려 떨고 있는 그를 발견했습니다.

어둠 속에서 홀로 60시간을 버티고 있는 오케네의 모습은 암담함 그 자체였습니다. 그는 이 무서운 경험으로 여전히 악몽에 시달린다고 기자들에게 말했습니다. 잠수부의 강력한 조명이 어둠을 뚫고 들어오는 것을 보았을 때 그의 마음은 어땠을까요? 그것은 엄청난 기쁨과 희망이었을 것입니다. 선지자 이사야는 메시아가 오시면 “흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 볼 것”이라고 예언했습니다(9:2). 우리 힘만으로는 “사망의 그늘진 땅”에서 벗어날 수 없지만, 예수님 안에 거하면 “빛이 떠오릅니다”(2절).

그리스도는 “세상의 빛”이시며, 그분 안에 거하면 더 이상 어둠을 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 우리에게는 “생명의 빛”이 있기 때문입니다(요한복음 8:12). 때로는 갇힌 것 같이 희망을 잃고, 외롭고 낙심되어도 하나님은 우리에게 복된 소식의 빛을 밝혀주십니다. 예수님은 우리를 어둠에서 끌어내 그의 놀라운 빛으로 인도하십니다.

OUT FROM THE DARK

The tugboat sank twenty miles off the coast of Nigeria, turning upside down as it fell to the sea floor. Eleven crew members drowned, but the ship’s cook, Harrison Odjegba Okene, found an air pocket and waited. He only had one bottle of Coke for provisions, and both of his flashlights died within the first twenty-four hours. For three terrifying days, Okene was trapped alone in darkness at the bottom of the ocean. He’d begun to give up hope when divers on a mission to recover dead bodies found him hunkered and shivering deep in the hull.

The image of Okene alone in the dark for sixty hours is unnerving. He told reporters he still suffers nightmares from the horrifying ordeal. But can you imagine what he felt when he saw the diver’s powerful lamp piercing the darkness? What joy and elation, what hope. The prophet Isaiah foretold how, when the Messiah came, all “the people walking in darkness” would see “a great light” (9:2). Left to our own devices, we live “in the land of deep darkness,” but in Jesus, “a light has dawned” (V. 2).

Christ is “the light of the world,” and in Him we need never again fear the darkness for we “have the light of life” (JOHN 8:12). We may feel trapped or hopeless, alone or in despair, but God illuminates good news. Jesus carries us out of the dark and into His marvelous light.

믿음의 도약

A LEAP OF FAITH

A French sailor, along with his cat, was sailing from Dutch Harbor—located on an island south of Alaska—to San Diego, California, when his yacht was capsized by a huge wave. The vessel righted itself, but the mariner lost his rudder and rigging to the violent swells. He reported his dire situation to the Coast Guard, saying he was stranded, had no control, and his boat was “pretty much dead in the water.” Eventually the Coast Guard contacted an oil drilling ship nearby, and they came to the sailor’s rescue. However, he still had to make a literal leap of faith—with his cat tucked under his jacket—from his boat to the rescue vessel.

In Ephesians 2, Paul described the sinful and hopeless condition of humanity—dead in the water spiritually and separated from God (V. 1). Moreover, we were disobedient to all that He desires (V. 2) and depraved—unable to do anything to merit salvation (V. 3). But “by grace,” Jesus made it possible for us to be “saved, through faith,” and this salvation is a “gift of God” (V. 8).

We were all stranded in the raging seas of sin and death, but praise God that we have a Savior who made it possible for us to leap into His saving arms by faith. Christ alone can rescue us and carry us to safety.

그리스도의 부활의 능력

2023년 1월, 미식축구팀 버팔로 빌스의 다마 햄린 선수가, 텔레비전으로 실황중계 되는 경기 중에 일견 평범한 태클을 하고 나서 갑자기 쓰러지는 것을 보고 팬들은 경악했습니다. 당시 24세의 햄린이 갑작스런 심장마비로 쓰러진 것입니다. 심장 박동은 멈췄지만 현장에서 바로 투입된 의료진들이 그를 다시 소생시켰습니다. 그리고 놀랍게도, 경기장에서 죽었다가 다시 살아났던 햄린은 세 달 후, 다시 경기를 할 수 있다는 진단을 받았습니다.

햄린은 목숨을 살려 주신 하나님과 의료진에게 감사하다고 말하면서 계속해서 사람들에게 좋은 본이 되겠다고 다짐했습니다. 요한복음 11장에 나오는 나사로의 회복도 햄린 못지 않게 경이롭습니다.

예수께서 베다니에 도착하신 건 나사로가 죽은 지 이미 나흘이 지난 뒤였습니다. 슬픔에 잠겨 있던 나사로의 누이 마리아와 마르다는 죽음을 이기시는 예수님의 능력과, 주님이 “부활이요 생명”(요한복음 11:25)이란 사실을 직접 목격했습니다. “(예수께서) 큰 소리로 ‘나사로야 나오라’ 부르시니 죽은 자가 수족을 베로 동인 채로 나오는데 그 얼굴은 수건에 싸였더라”(11:43-44).

우리도 그리스도의 부활의 능력을 보여주는 본보기들입니다. 우리는 한때 죄로 말미암아 사망했지만, 지금은 그리스도 안에서 다시 살아났습니다(로마서 6:1-11). 예수님을 믿는 우리 안에 예수님을 죽음에서 살리신 바로 그 성령님이 살아 계십니다(8:10-11). 힘을 내십시오. 우리는 누구나 육신적으로는 죽겠지만, 그것이 우리 이야기의 끝이 아닙니다. 우리는 예수님과 함께 영원히 살 것이라는 약속을 받았습니다.

CHRIST’S RESURRECTION POWER

Football fans were stunned when Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills collapsed on the field on live television after executing a seemingly routine tackle in January 2023. The twenty-fouryear- old was in sudden cardiac arrest. His heart stopped beating but was restored by medical professionals while on the field. Amazingly, three months after dying and being resuscitated on the field, Hamlin was cleared to play football again.

Hamlin has stated that he’s grateful to God and the medical staff for saving his life. He plans to continue being an inspiration to others. In John chapter 11, Lazarus also had a remarkable recovery.

By the time Jesus had arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been dead for four days. His distraught sisters, Mary and Martha, witnessed Jesus’ power over death and that He is “the resurrection and the life” (JOHN 11:25). “Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face” (VV. 43-44).

We’re also examples of Christ’s resurrection power. We were once dead in our sins, but we’re now alive in Christ (ROMANS 6:1-11). As believers, the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of us (8:10-11). Be encouraged. While we’ll all die a physical death, that’s not the end of our story. We’re promised eternal life with Jesus.

하나님이 인도하시는 길

주차장으로 내려가는 가파른 진입로를 따라 차를 운전하면서 내게 불안이 엄습했습니다. 전에도 똑같은 장소에 와서 길을 잃었었기 때문입니다. 하지만 차에서 내려 엘리베이터 근처의 문으로 걸어가기 시작하면서 마음이 놓이기 시작했습니다. 여기서부터는 길을 알고 있었으니까요! 문을 통과해서 내가 찾던 엘리베이터를 올바로 찾았고, 곧 내가 가야 할 곳에 도착 했습니다.

그 주차장의 미로를 헤쳐 나가는 나의 경험은 길을 잃는 것이 때로는 길을 찾는 데 도움이 될 수 있다는 사실을 일깨워줍니다. 처음 방문했을 때 길을 잃었었기 때문에 어디서 틀렸었는지 기억했고 그래서 목적지로 이어지는 문을 기억할 수 있었습니다.

우리가 길을 찾게 될 때 큰 기쁨이 있습니다. 이것은 오늘 읽은 비유에서 “잃어버린 아들”이 진정 찾게 된 것과 같은 것입니다(누가복음 15:24). 세상에서 길을 잃고 방황하던 청년은 “이에 스스로 돌이켜”(17절) 집으로 돌아가야 한다는 것을 알았습니다. 그가 자신이 떠나온 모든 것을 깨닫고 집으로 돌아왔을 때 아버지의 “사랑과 긍휼”을 받게 되었습니다(20절). 이 이야기에서 아버지는 아주 기뻐하면서 잃어버린 아들을 맞아들이고 환영하며, “이 내 아들은 죽었다가 다시 살아났으며 내가 잃었다가 다시 얻었노라”(24절)고 말합니다.

우리가 영적으로 길을 잃었다면, 하나님께서 제공하신 집으로 가는 익숙한 길을 찾도록 합시다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑의 빛으로 가리키시며 우리가 있어야 할 곳으로 인도하십니다.

GOD’S WAY HOME

As I drove down the steep ramp into the parking lot, anxiety swept over me. I’d been in this exact place before—and I’d gotten lost that time. But now, as I began to walk to the door near the elevator, a calm feeling filled my heart. I knew the way! I walked through the door and found the set of elevators I was seeking and soon was where I was supposed to be.

My experience in finding my way through the maze of that parking structure reminds me that getting lost can sometimes help us find our way. Because I got lost during my first visit, I recalled what had gone wrong and remembered the door that led to my destination.

There’s great joy in finding our way—something the “lost son” in today’s parable found to be true (LUKE 15:24). “When he finally came to his senses” (V. 17 NLT), the wayward young man knew his way back home after having been lost in the world. He recognized all he had left behind and returned home where he received his father’s “love and compassion” (V. 20 NLT). The story says the father was overjoyed to receive his lost son and welcome him back, saying, “This son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found” (V. 24 NLT).

If we’re lost spiritually, let’s look for the familiar way home God has provided. He points us toward His loving light and to where we’re supposed to be.

하나님은 결코 우리를 떠나지 않으십니다

성지순례길에서 우리는 예수님이 걸으셨던 길을 걷는 것을 좋아했습니다. 나는 지금 예수님의 지상 생애 동안의 풍경과 소리를 더 수월하게 상상할 수 있습니다. 하지만 교회와 시골의 울퉁불퉁한 돌길을 오르내리다 보니 숙소에 돌아왔을 때 무릎에 통증이 있었습니다. 그러나 그 고통은 아주 오래 전 그 길을 걸었던 사람들에 비하면 사소한 것이었습니다. 그들은 관절의 통증뿐 아니라 엄청난 고난을 당했으며, 심지어 죽기까지 했습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 그들과 함께 하셨습니다.

하나님은 그분을 따르는 자기 백성들을 부르셔서 “젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅” 에서 풍성한 삶을 살도록 인도하셨습니다(출애굽기 3:8). 하나님은 그들이 약속의 땅에 들어갈 때 적군의 공격과 성벽으로 둘러싸인 도성 같은 장애물에 직면할 것을 아셨습니다. 광야를 헤매던 40년 동안 그들과 함께하셨던 하나님은 지금도 그들을 버리지 않으실 것입니다. 하나님은 새로운 지도자 여호수아에게 그들과 함께 하실 것이라고 이렇게 약속하셨습니다. “내가 너와 함께 있을 것임이니라 내가 너를 떠나지 아니하며 버리지 아니하리니”(여호수아 1:5). 여호수아는 앞으로 많은 도전과 고난을 맞게 되어 강해지고 용기를 가져야 할 상황이었지만, 하나님께서 그가 그럴 수 있도록 도와주실 것이었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리도, 머물거나 또는 떠나도록 부름을 받을 때, 이 삶에서 위험과 도전, 고통을 겪게 될 것입니다. 그러나 결코 우리를 떠나지 않으시는 하나님의 약속을 붙잡을 수 있습니다. 주님으로 말미암아 우리도 강하고 담대할 수 있습니다.

GOD NEVER LEAVES US

In the Holy Land, we loved walking where Jesus walked. Now I can more easily imagine the sights and sounds from His earthly life. But climbing up and down the uneven stones of the churches and countryside left its mark, and I arrived home with sore knees. Yet my ailments were minor compared with those journeying centuries ago, who not only experienced aching joints but suffered greatly—and even died. But God was with them.

God called His people to follow Him and invited them to live in a flourishing “land flowing with milk and honey” (EXODUS 3:8). He knew that as they entered the promised land, they would face danger from opposing armies and obstacles such as walled cities. God had been with them for forty years in their desert wanderings and wouldn’t abandon them now. He promised Joshua, the new leader, His presence with them: “I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (JOSHUA 1:5). Joshua would face challenges and hardships, needing to be strong and courageous, but God would help him to do so.

We who believe in Jesus, whether we’re called to stay or to go, will face dangers, challenges, and suffering in this life. But we can hold on to the promises of our God who will never leave us. Because of Him, we too can be strong and courageous.

비극 속에서 피어난 아름다움

잉글랜드의 아름다운 호수 지역에 위치한 코니스톤 워터는 많은 영국 가족들이 즐겨 찾는 휴양지입니다. 이 호수는 보트타기, 수영, 그리고 다양한 수상 스포츠를 즐기기에 완벽한 장소입니다. 하지만 이 아름다운 장소는 큰 비극의 현장이기도 했습니다. 1967년, 도널드 캠벨이 수상활주 속도 세계기록을 깨기 위해 수상활주정 ‘블루버드 K7’을 조종했습니다. 그는 시속 528 km라는 최고 속도를 달성했지만 그 성과를 축하할 겨를도 없이 ‘블루버드’ 가 충돌했고, 목숨을 잃었습니다.

비극은 아름다운 장소에서도 일어날 수 있습니다. 창세기 2장에서, 창조주 하나님은 “그 사람을 이끌어 에덴 동산에 두어 그것을 경작하며 지키게 하셨습니다” (15절). 이 동산은 하나님의 걸작이었지만, 이 낙원에 살게 된 남자와 여자가 하나님께 불순종함으로써 하나님의 창조세계에 죄와 사망을 가져왔습니다 (3:6-7). 오늘날까지도 우리는 그들의 비극적인 선택이 초래한 파괴적인 결과를 계속해서 보고 있습니다.

하지만 예수님은 죄로 말미암아 죽을 수밖에 없는 우리에게 생명을 주시려고 오셨습니다. 바울 사도는 이를 가리켜 “한 사람[아담]이 순종하지 아니함으로 많은 사람이 죄인 된 것 같이 한 사람[예수 그리스도]이 순종하심으로 많은 사람이 의인이 되리라”(로마서 5:19)고 설파했습니다. “예수님으로 말미암아 가장 아름다운 우리 본향으로 돌아갈 수 있게 되었습니다.

아름다움 속에서 비극이 일어났지만, 하나님의 은혜로 비극 속에서 영원한 아름다움이 피어났습니다.

BEAUTY OUT OF TRAGEDY

Coniston Water in England’s beautiful Lake District is a favorite vacation spot for families in the UK. The waters are perfect for boating, swimming, and other water sports. That beautiful setting, however, was also the site of great tragedy. In 1967, Donald Campbell was piloting his hydroplane Bluebird K7, seeking to break the world water speed record. He reached a top speed of 328 mph (528 km/h) but didn’t live to celebrate the achievement as Bluebird crashed, killing Campbell.

Tragic moments can happen in beautiful places. In Genesis 2, the Creator “took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” (V. 15). The garden was a masterpiece, yet when placed in this paradise, the man and woman disobeyed God, bringing sin and death into His creation (3:6-7). Today, we continue to see the destructive effects of their tragic choice.

But Jesus came to offer life to us—people who were dead in our sins. The apostle Paul, referring to that, wrote, “Just as through the disobedience of the one man [Adam] the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man [Jesus Christ] the many will be made righteous” (ROMANS 5:19). Because of Jesus, the most beautiful home of all awaits us.

Out of beauty came tragedy. And by God’s grace, out of tragedy came eternal beauty.

우리의 믿음직한 피난처 하나님

우리 딸이 가장 선명하게 기억하는 어린 시절의 추억 중 하나는 아빠가 보조바퀴 없이 자전거 타는 법을 가르쳐 준 날입니다. 그 날, 남편은 딸의 자전거 뒷바퀴 축에 발을 올리고 (딸은 페달을 밟고 둘이서 핸들을 잡은 채로) 완만한 경사의 작은 언덕을 함께 내려갔습니다. 딸은 그 순간 두려움 속에 있었던 자기와 매우 대조적으로 기쁨에 겨운 아빠의 웃음 소리를 기억합니다. 자전거는 순식간에 언덕 밑에 도착했고 너무 짧은 순간이라 남편이 딸의 마음을 헤아려 공감대를 형성할 겨를이 없었습니다. 지금 그 일을 함께 회상하면서, 다른 감정을 기억하는 딸에게 남편은 모든 것이 괜찮을 걸 알고 있었다며 다정하게 다독여 줍니다.

GOD, OUR TRUSTWORTHY REFUGE

One of my daughter’s most vivid childhood memories is the day her dad taught her to ride a bike without training wheels. At one point in their outing, my husband balanced his feet on the hubs of her rear wheel (while she kept hers on the pedals and they shared the handlebars) so they could coast down a small, gently sloping section together. She remembers her dad laughing with joy—a sharp contrast to her own fearful experience of the moment. The ride was so short that the entire episode happened too quickly for him to stop and empathize with her. As they reminisce about the incident today, my husband’s gentle response to her recollection is to reassure her that he knew everything would be okay.

Their story is an apt metaphor for the moments when we too experience fear in life. The “hills” might look big and scary from our vantage point, and the risk of being hurt can seem very real. Yet Scripture assures us that because “the Lord is with [us],” we don’t need to “be afraid” (PSALM 118:6). Though human help may fail us, He’s a trustworthy refuge when we feel overwhelmed by our struggles (VV. 8-9).

God is our “helper” (V. 7), which means we can trust Him to care for us during life’s most trying and fearful moments. Despite any falls, scars, and pain we might endure, His saving presence is our “strength” and “defense” (V. 14).

우연과 하나님의 돌보심

단테가 살던 마닐라의 동네는 홍수가 자주 나는 지역이었습니다. 비가 오는 날이면 어린 소년 단테는 이웃 사람이 임시로 만든 나무다리를 건너서 학교에 갔습니다. “토마스 아저씨는 동네 사람들이 다닐 수 있도록 도와 주셨어요.” 단테는 말했습니다. “아저씨는 비를 막아주며 제가 다리를 건너는 것을 도와주곤 하셨죠.”

몇 년 후 단테는 마닐라 북쪽의 한 교회에 다니게 되었습니다. 그의 성경 공부 리더였던 레오는 멘토가 되어 주었습니다. 어린 시절에 대한 이야기를 나누던 중, 단테는 레오가 바로 토마스 아저씨의 아들이라는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. “세상에 우연은 없어요.” 단테는 말했습니다. “하나님께서는 저를 축복해 주셨던 아저씨의 아들을 통해 제 믿음이 성장하도록 하셨죠.”

여러 해 전 그 여인의 죽은 아들이 다시 살아나는 것을 보았던 게하시가 왕에게 말했습니다. “내 주 왕이여 이는 그 여인이요 저는 그의 아들이니 곧 엘리사가 다시 살린 자니이다”(5절). 그러자 왕은 “그를 위하여 한 관리를 임명하여”(6절) 그 여인에게 속한 재산을 모두 돌려주었습니다.

우리가 계획한 대로 일이 풀리지 않을 때도 하나님과 그의 돌보심을 믿을 수 있습니다.

COINCIDENCES AND GOD’S CARE

Dante’s neighborhood in Manila was prone to flooding. On rainy days, the little boy reached school by crossing a makeshift wooden bridge put up by a neighbor. “Mr. Tomas helped the community get around,” Dante said. “He’d guide me on the bridge, shielding me from the rain.”

Years later, Dante joined a church north of Manila. Leo, his Bible study leader, mentored him. In a conversation about their childhoods, Dante discovered Leo was Mr. Tomas’ son! “There’s no such thing as coincidence,” Dante said. “God used the son of a man who’d blessed me to help me in my faith.”

A woman from the town of Shunem also experienced God’s providence. In faith, she’d followed the prophet Elisha’s advice, leaving home to avoid a famine (2 KINGS 8:1-2). In doing so, she’d forfeited her claim to her house and land. Now, at the exact moment she was seeking help from the king about this matter, the king just happened to be talking with Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, about her.

Years earlier, Gehazi had seen the woman’s dead son raised to life. Now, Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life” (V. 5). The king then “assigned an official to her case” (V. 6) and returned her property.

We can trust in God and His care even when things may not go as we planned.

생명을 구하는 일

아돌포 카민스키는 지워지지 않는 잉크를 종이에서 제거하는 방법을 알고 있었습니다. 프랑스에서 반나치 저항 운동의 일원으로 활동하던 그는 신분증을 위조해 수백 명을 강제수용소에서 구했습니다. 한번은 유대인 어린이 300명을 위해 출생증명서와 세례증명서, 그리고 배급카드 900장을 3일 안에 위조해야 했습니다. 그는 “내가 한 시간 동안 30장의 문서를 만들어 낼 수 있으니, 내가 한 시간 동안 잠을 자면 30명이 죽게 된다” 고스스로를 다그치며 이틀 동안 한숨도 자지 않고 꼬박 새면서 작업에 몰두했습니다.

바울 사도도 이와 비슷한 긴박함을 느꼈습니다. 바울은 에베소 교회에 자신이 어떻게 “여러 가지 시험을 당하면서도 언제나 겸손과 눈물로 주님을 섬겨 왔는”(사도행전 20:19, 현대인의 성경)지 상기시키면서, “유익한 것은 무엇이든지... 거리낌이 없이 여러분에게 전하여 가르쳤다”(20절)고 말했습니다. 이런 긴박함 때문에 그는 회개와 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음의 필요성을 누구 에게나 전하지 않을 수 없었습니다(21절). 이제 그는 “달려갈 길과 주 예수께 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 마치”(24절)기를 간절히 바라며 예루살렘으로 다시 돌아갔습니다.

바울이 사람을 구원할 수는 없었습니다. 오직 하나님이 하십니다. 그러나 바울은 사람들에게 예수님에 대한 하나님의 복음을 전할 수 있었습니다. 바로 “천하 사람 중에 구원을 받을 만한 이름”(사도행전 4:12), 그 유일하신 이름, 예수님 말입니다.

SAVING LIVES

Adolfo Kaminsky knew how to remove indelible ink from paper. As a member of the anti-Nazi resistance in France, he altered identification cards to save hundreds from concentration amps. Once he was given three days to forge nine hundred birth and baptismal certificates and ration cards for three hundred Jewish children. He labored two straight days without sleep, telling himself, “In one hour I can make thirty blank documents. If I sleep for an hour thirty people will die.”

The apostle Paul felt a similar urgency. He reminded the church in Ephesus how he’d “served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing” (ACTS 20:19). Paul said, “I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you” (V. 20). This urgency compelled him to share with everyone the necessity of repentance and faith in Jesus (V. 21). Now he was sailing back to Jerusalem, eager to “finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus [had] given [him]—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” (V. 24).

Paul couldn’t save people. Only God does that. But he could tell them God’s good news about Jesus, the only “name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (ACTS 4:12).

예수님 알아보기

리처드 그리핀은 엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 경호원으로 14년 동안 여왕을 모셨습니다. 어느 날 여왕과 함께 밸모럴 성 근처 언덕에서 소풍을 하던 중, 두 명의 미국인 등산객을 만났습니다. 등산객들은 평상복 차림의 여왕을 알아보지 못하고 여왕에게 이렇게 물었습니다. “여왕을 만나본 적이 있나요?” 그러자 여왕은 재치있는 대답을 했습니다. “나는 만나본 적이 없지만, 여기 리처드는 주기적으로 만나요!” 왕족과 가까운 사람을 만나서 들뜬 등산객들은 여왕에게 그들의 카메라를 건네며 리처드와 함께 포즈를 취하고 사진을 찍어 달라고 부탁했습니다!

이처럼 중요한 인물과 함께 있으면서도 알아보지 못하는 경우가 종종 있습니다. 야곱도 벧엘에서 꿈속 가운데 하나님을 만난 후 “여호와께서 과연 여기 계시거늘 내가 알지 못하였도다”(창세기 28:16)라고 고백했습니다. 그리고 빌립이 하나님 아버지를 보여 달라고 예수님께 요청했을 때, 예수님은 “빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐 나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘”(요한복음 14:9)이라고 답하셨습니다. 등산객들처럼, 제자들이 집중해야 할 사람은 바로 ‘예수님’임을 깨닫지 못한 채, 예수님께 카메라를 건네주려고 했습니다(10-11절).

그날의 여왕처럼 우리는 예수님이 진정 누구신지 알아보지 못하는 경우가 종종 있습니다. 단순히 “현명한 교사”나 “위대한 도덕적 지도자”정도가 아니고, 예수님은 육신을 입으신 하나님이시며 세상의 왕이십니다(1:14; 18:36). 우리가 이 사실을 깨닫는 것은 인생에서 가장 놀라운 깨달음입니다!

RECOGNIZING JESUS

Richard Griffin was Queen Elizabeth II’s personal police officer for fourteen years. Accompanying her on a picnic in the hills near Balmoral Castle one day, they met two American hikers. “Have you ever met the Queen?” they asked, not recognizing the monarch in plain dress. “I haven’t,” the Queen quipped, “but Richard here meets her regularly!” Thrilled to meet someone close to royalty, the hikers then handed the Queen their camera, posed with Richard, and asked her to take a photo!

It isn’t the first time someone has been in the presence of an important person unawares. “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it,” Jacob said after encountering God in a dream at Bethel (GENESIS 28:16). And when Philip asked Jesus to show the disciples the Father, Jesus replied, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (JOHN 14:9). Like the hikers, the disciples had been ready to hand Jesus the camera, not recognizing He was the one to zoom in on (VV. 10-11).

Like the Queen that day, Jesus hasn’t always been recognized for who He really is. Beyond a “wise teacher” or “great moral leader,” He’s God in the flesh and King of the world (1:14; 18:36). What a revelation it is when we discover it!
