구조를 기다리며

알디라고 하는 십대 소년이 인도네시아의 술라웨시 섬에서 125킬로미터 (약 78마일) 떨어진 곳에 닻을 내리고 작은 고깃배에서 혼자 일하고 있었는데 강한 바람이 불어와 정박시켜 놓은 밧줄이 풀려 배가 바다 멀리 떠밀려 갔습니다. 알디는 49일 동안을 바다에서 표류하며 배가 지나갈 때마다 램프를 켜서 선원들에게 알리려고 애를 썼지만 결과는 실망뿐이었습니다. 마침내 십여 척의 배가 지나가고 나서야 영양실조 상태인 그가 구조되었습니다.

예수님은 한 “율법교사”(누가복음 10:25)에게 도움이 필요한 한 사람에 관하여 비유를 들어 말씀하셨습니다. 제사장과 레위인이 길을 가다가 다친 사람을 보았지만 둘 다 그를 돕기는커녕 “피하여 지나갔습니다”(31-32절). 왜 그랬는지 우리는 모릅니다. 둘 다 종교인이었기에 자기 이웃을 사랑하라는 하나님의 율법을 잘 알고 있었을 것입니다(레위기 19:17-18). 어쩌면 너무 위험하다고 생각했을지도 모릅니다. 아니면 시신을 만지면 율법적으로 부정하게 되어 성전의 일을 할 수 없기 때문에 그들의 율법을 어기고 싶지 않아서 그랬을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 이와는 반대로 유대인들에게 멸시를 받던 한 사마리아인은 아주 고귀하게 행동했습니다. 그는 도움이 필요한 사람을 보고는 헌신적으로 돌보았습니다.

예수님은 그를 따르는 사람들에게 “가서 너도 이와 같이 하라”(누가복음 10:37)는 명령으로 가르침을 마치셨습니다. 위험이 따르더라도 기꺼이 다른 이들을 사랑으로 도울 수 있는 마음을 하나님께서 우리에게 주시기를 소원합니다.

IN NEED OF RESCUE

A teenager named Aldi was working alone on a fishing hut anchored about 125 kilometers (about 78 miles) off Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island when heavy winds knocked the hut off its mooring and sent it out to sea. For forty-nine days, Aldi drifted in the ocean. Every time he spotted a ship, he turned on his lamp to try and get the sailors’ attention, only to be disappointed. About ten ships passed the malnourished teen before he was rescued.

Jesus told a parable to an “expert in the law” (LUKE 10:25) about someone who needed to be rescued. Two men—a priest and a Levite—saw an injured man as they were traveling. But rather than help him, both “passed by on the other side” (VV. 31–32). We aren’t told why. Both were religious men and would have been familiar with God’s law to love their neighbor (LEVITICUS 19:17–18). They may have thought it was too dangerous. Or perhaps they didn’t want to break Jewish laws about touching dead bodies, making them ceremonially unclean and unable to serve in the temple. In contrast, a Samaritan—who was despised by the Jews— acted nobly. He saw the man in need and selflessly took care of him.

Jesus wrapped up His teaching with the command that His followers should “go and do likewise” (LUKE 10:37). May God give us the willingness to risk reaching out in love to help others. - POH FANG CHIA

소외된 자를 찾으시는 예수님

모터사이클 운전자들의 놀라운 묘기를 보여주는 시범 공연에 많은 관중이 몰려들어 나는 발뒤꿈치를 들고 서야만 공연을 볼 수가 있었습니다. 주위를 둘러보니 아이 셋이 근처의 나무 위에 앉아 있었는데, 아이들도 묘기를 보려고 왔지만 사람들 때문에 앞으로 나갈 수 없었던 모양입니다.

아이들이 높은 데로 올라가 구경하는 것을 보면서 누가가 부자 세리라고 한 삭개오를 생각하지 않을 수 없었습니다(누가복음 19:2). 유대인들은 종종 세무 관원들을 자기의 재산을 모으려고 세금 이외에 추가로 돈을 요구할 뿐 아니라 로마 정부를 위해 이스라엘 동족들로부터 세금을 걷는 반역자로 여겼습니다. 그러므로 삭개오도 그의 동네에서 따돌림을 받았을 것입니다.

예수님이 여리고를 지나가실 때 삭개오도 예수님을 보고 싶었지만 수많은 관중 때문에 볼 수가 없었습니다. 아마도 그래서 절박감과 외로움에서 예수님을 잠시라도 보기 위해 돌무화과나무 위로 올라갔던 것 같습니다(3-4절). 그런데 바로 거기서 군중들의 바깥쪽에 있는 그를 예수님이 찾아내시고 그의 집에 머무르시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다(5절).

삭개오의 이야기는 예수님이 “잃어버린 자를 찾아 구원하셔서” 주님과의 사귐과 구원의 선물을 주시기 위해 오셨다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다(9-10절). 우리가 “군중들 뒤로” 밀려 사회에서 소외감을 느낄지라도 거기서도 예수님은 우리를 찾아내신다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

FOUND ON THE EDGES

In the middle of the crowd at a motorcycle demonstration where riders performed breathtaking tricks, I found myself needing to stand on my tiptoes to see. Glancing around, I noticed three children perched in a nearby tree, apparently because they also couldn’t get to the front of the crowd to see the action.

Watching the kids peer out from their lofty location, I couldn’t help but think of Zacchaeus, who Luke identifies as a wealthy tax collector (LUKE 19:2). Jews often viewed tax collectors as traitors for working for the Roman government collecting taxes from fellow Israelites, as well as frequently demanding additional money to pad their personal bank accounts. So Zacchaeus was likely shunned from his community.

As Jesus passed through Jericho, Zacchaeus longed to see Him but was unable to see over the crowd. So, perhaps feeling both desperate and lonely, he climbed into a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse (VV. 3–4). And it was there, on the outskirts of the crowd, that Jesus searched him out and announced His intention to be a guest at his home (V. 5).

Zacchaeus’ story reminds us that Jesus came to “seek and to save the lost,” offering His friendship and the gift of salvation (VV. 9–10). Even if we feel on the edges of our communities, pushed to the “back of the crowd,” we can be assured that, even there, Jesus finds us. LISA M. SAMRA

유혹도 유익하다

15세기 수도사 토마스 아 켐피스는 ‘그리스도를 본받아’라는 유명한 고전에서 유혹에 대해 다소 놀라운 관점을 제시합니다. 그는 유혹의 결과인 고통과 어려움에 초점을 맞추는 대신 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “[유혹은] 우리를 겸허하게 하고, 정결하게 하며, 또 우리를 가르칠 수 있기 때문에 유익하다.” 켐피스는 설명합니다. “진정한 겸손과 인내가 승리의 열쇠이며, 그 속에서 우리는 적을 이겨낼 수 있다.”

‘겸손과 인내’. 내가 유혹에 그렇게 대응했다면 예수님과 동행하는 내 삶이 얼마나 달라졌을까요! 하지만 나는 수치심과 짜증으로, 조급히 문제에서 벗어날 방법을 찾으려 할 때가 더 많습니다.

그러나 야고보서 1장에서 배우듯, 우리가 당면하는 유혹과 시련들은 아무런 목적도 없거나 그저 견뎌내야 하는 위협이 아닙니다. 유혹에 이끌려 상처와 절망을 겪을지라도(13-15절) 우리가 겸허한 마음으로 하나님께 나아가 그분의 지혜와 은총을 구하면 “후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는”(5절) 하나님을 만나게 됩니다. 우리 안에 거하시는 하나님의 능력을 통해서, 시련과 고통을 겪으며 죄와 맞서 싸울 때 우리 속에 인내가 자라나 “[우리로] 온전하게 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게” 만들어줍니다(4절).

우리는 예수님을 믿기 때문에 두려움 속에서 살 이유가 없습니다. 하나님의 사랑받는 귀한 자녀로서 우리는 유혹을 받아도 하나님의 사랑의 품안에 쉬며 평강를 누릴 수 있습니다.

USEFUL TEMPTATION

Fifteenth-century monk Thomas à Kempis, in the beloved classic The Imitation of Christ, offers a perspective on temptation that might be a bit surprising. Instead of focusing on the pain and difficulties temptation can lead to, he writes, “[temptations] are useful because they can make us humble, they can cleanse us, and they can teach us.” Kempis explains, “The key to victory is true humility and patience; in them we overcome the enemy.”

Humility and patience. How different my walk with Christ would be if that were how I naturally responded to temptation! More often, I react with shame, frustration, and impatient attempts to get rid of the struggle.

But, as we learn from James 1, the temptations and trials we face don’t have to be without purpose or merely a threat we endure. Although giving in to temptation can bring heartbreak and devastation (VV. 13–15), when we turn to God with humble hearts seeking His wisdom and grace, we find He “gives generously to all without finding fault” (V. 5). Through His power in us, our trials and struggles to resist sin build perseverance, “so that [we] may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (V. 4).

As we trust in Jesus, there’s no reason to live in fear. As God’s dearly loved children, we can find peace as we rest in His loving arms even as we face temptation. MONICA LA ROSE

내 아버지의 자녀

아이들이 빛바랜 사진을 내려다보다가 나를 올려다보더니 다시 내 아버지를 쳐다보고, 그리고 다시 나를 보더니 다시 내 아버지를 바라보았습니다. 그러면서 아이들 눈은 그야말로 속담에 나오는 말처럼 접시만큼 커졌습니다. “아빠, 아빠 모습이 할아버지 젊으셨을 때 모습과 똑같아요!” 아버지와 나는 그 사실을 이미 오래 전부터 알고 있었기에 그저 웃기만 했으나 아이들은 이제야 안 것입니다. 아버지와 나는 다른 사람이지만 실제로 나를 보면서 아버지의 젊은 시절의 모습을 봅니다. 크고 마른 체격, 숱이 많은 검은 머리카락, 우뚝 솟은 코, 그리고 다소 큰 귀까지 닮았습니다. 나는 내 아버지가 분명히 아니지만 틀림없이 아버지의 아들입니다.

예수님을 따르던 빌립이 어느 날 이렇게 요청했습니다. “주여 아버지를 우리에게 보여주옵소서”(요한복음 14:8). 예수님은 이번이 처음은 아니었지만 이 때에도 잠시 침묵하셨다가 “나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았다”(9절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 내가 아버지와 닮았다는 것과는 달리, 예수님이 여기 하신 말씀은 완전히 다른 것입니다. “내가 아버지 안에 거하고 아버지는 내 안에 계신 것을 네가 믿지 아니하느냐”(10절). 예수님은 그분의 본질과 성품이 하나님 아버지와 똑같다는 것이었습니다.

그 때 예수님은 사랑하는 제자들과 우리에게 사실 그대로를 말씀하신 것입니다. ‘하나님이 어떤 분이신가 알고 싶으면 나를 보아라.’

MY FATHER’S CHILD

They looked down at the faded photograph, then up at me, then over at my father, then back at me, then back at my father. Their eyes were as wide as the proverbial saucers. “Dad, you look just like Papa when he was young!” My father and I grinned because this was something we’d known for a long time, but it wasn’t until recently that my children came to the same realization. While my father and I are different people, in a very real sense to see me is to see my father as a younger man: tall, lanky frame; full head of dark hair; prominent nose; and rather large ears. No, I am not my father, but I am most definitely my father’s son.

A follower of Jesus named Philip once asked, “Lord, show us the Father” (JOHN 14:8). And while it wasn’t the first time Jesus had indicated as much, His response was still cause for pause: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (V. 9). Unlike the physical resemblances between my father and me, what Jesus says here is revolutionary: “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?” (V. 10). His very essence and character were the same as His Father’s.

In that moment Jesus was being straightforward with His beloved disciples and us: If you want to know what God is like, look at Me. - JOHN BLASE

거룩한 모임

아름다운 호숫가에서 연휴를 보내기 위해 친구들과 모였습니다. 물놀이도 하고 함께 식사를 하며 며칠을 보냈지만, 내가 가장 귀하게 여긴 것은 저녁시간에 나눈 대화들이었습니다. 어두움이 깃들자 우리는 서로 마음을 열고 흔들리는 결혼생활에서 오는 아픔이나 우리 자녀들이 겪고 있는 정신적 상처와 그 여파에 대해 평소에 할 수 없었던 마음 속 깊은 이야기들을 솔직하게 나누었습니다. 우리는 망가진 우리의 진짜 모습을 얼버무리고 넘어가지 않고 그런 심한 어려움 속에서도 하나님과 그분의 신실하심을 바라보자고 서로를 권면했습니다. 그 며칠 동안의 저녁은 내 인생에서 참으로 거룩했던 시간으로 남아 있습니다.

나는 그 저녁시간들이 하나님이 그의 백성들에게 초막절에 매년 모이도록 명하셨을 때 의도하셨던 것과 비슷하지 않을까 상상해 봅니다. 다른 축제들과 마찬가지로 초막절을 위해 이스라엘 백성들은 예루살렘을 향해 떠나야 했습니다. 그들이 도착하면 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 함께 모여 예배드리고 약 1주일의 축제 기간 동안 “아무 노동도 하지 말라”고 하셨습니다(레위기 23:35). 초막절은 하나님의 예비하심을 기리고 애굽을 떠나 광야에서 보낸 시간들을 기념하기 위한 것이었습니다(42-43절).

SACRED GATHERING

Our group of friends reunited for a long weekend together on the shores of a beautiful lake. The days were spent playing in the water and sharing meals, but it was the evening conversations I treasured the most. As darkness fell, our hearts opened to one another with uncommon depth and vulnerability, sharing the pains of faltering marriages and the aftermath of trauma some of our children were enduring. Without glossing over the brokenness of our realities, we pointed one another to God and His faithfulness throughout such extreme difficulties. Those evenings are among the most sacred in my life.

I imagine those nights are similar to what God intended when He instructed His people to gather each year for the Festival of Tabernacles. This feast, like many others, required the Israelites to travel to Jerusalem. Once they arrived, God instructed His people to gather together in worship and to “do no regular work” for the duration of the feast—about a week! (LEVITICUS 23:35). The Festival of Tabernacles celebrated God’s provision and commemorated their time in the wilderness after leaving Egypt (VV. 42–43).

This gathering cemented the Israelites’ sense of identity as God’s people and proclaimed His goodness despite their collective and individual hardships. When we gather with those we love to recall God’s provision and presence in our lives, we too are strengthened in faith. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

용서하라고 선택받음

패트릭 아일랜드는 하나님이 어떤 일을 위해 그를 선택하셨다는 것을 중학생 때 처음 느꼈습니다. 하지만 무엇을 위해서인지는 잘 몰랐습니다. 나중에 자신을 포함하여 24명이 다치고 13명이 숨진 끔찍한 콜럼바인 고등학교(콜로라도) 총기사건의 생존자로서 그는 그 질문에 대한 답을 이해하기 시작했습니다.

오랜 회복 기간 동안 패트릭은 원망을 품고 살면 상처가 더 깊어진다는 것을 알았습니다. 하나님은 용서의 비결은 다른 사람들이 우리에게 한 일들보다는 예수님이 우리를 위해서 하신 일에 초점을 맞추는 것이라고 패트릭에게 보여주셨습니다. 예수님을 괴롭히던 사람들을 향해 십자가 위에서 “아버지 저들을 사하여 주옵소서 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다” (누가복음 23:34)라고 하신 예수님의 말씀은 예수님의 용서를 예언한 스가랴 제사장의 예언을 이룬 것이었습니다(1:77). 나아가 예수님이 보이신 본은 패트릭에게 한 가지 목적을 보여주었습니다. 그 비극이 일어난 지 20년이 지나서 패트릭은 말했습니다. “아마도 나는 용서를 하라고 선택되었나 봅니다.”

대부분의 사람들은 콜럼바인에서와 같은 상상도 못할 참사를 겪지는 않지만 누구나 어떤 식으로든 부당한 일을 당합니다. 배우자가 배신하고, 자식이 반항하고, 직장상사가 괴롭힙니다. 그런데도 어떻게 앞으로 나아갈 수 있을까요? 아마도 우리 구주 예수님의 본을 바라보아야 할 것 같습니다. 주님은 배척받고 잔인한 일을 당하시면서 용서하셨습니다. 예수님이 우리의 죄를 용서하심으로 우리가 구원받았고, 이로써 다른 사람들을 용서하는 능력도 얻었습니다. 그래서 우리도 패트릭처럼 원망을 내려놓고 마음을 열어 용서할 수 있게 되었습니다.

CHOSEN TO FORGIVE

As a middle-schooler, Patrick Ireland first sensed God had chosen him for something. But what? Later as a survivor of the horrific Columbine (Colorado) High School massacre where thirteen were killed and twenty-four wounded, including Patrick, he began to understand an answer.

Through his long recovery, Patrick learned that clinging to bitterness causes further wounding. God showed Patrick that the key to forgiveness is to stop focusing on what others have done to us and to focus on what Jesus has done for us. Christ’s words on the cross toward His tormenters, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (LUKE 23:34), fulfilled Zechariah the priest’s prophecy of Jesus’ forgiveness (1:77). Additionally, His example revealed a purpose for Patrick, and twenty years after the tragedy, Patrick shared, “Maybe I was chosen to forgive.”

While most of us will not endure an unimaginable calamity such as the one committed at Columbine, each of us has been wronged in some way. A spouse betrays. A child rebels. An employer abuses. How do we move forward? Perhaps we look to the example of our Savior. In the face of rejection and cruelty, He forgave. It is through Jesus’ forgiveness of our sins that we, ourselves, find salvation, which includes the ability to forgive others. And like Patrick, we can choose to let go of our bitterness to open our hearts to forgiveness. ELISA MORGAN

주님의 인도하심이 필요해

학자 케네스 베일리에게 자키 아저씨는 친구 이상이었습니다. 그 넓은 사하라 사막을 답사하는 만만치 않은 여행에 자키 아저씨는 그가 신뢰할 수 있는 안내자였습니다. 베일리는 그와 그의 팀이 자키 아저씨를 완전히 신뢰하며 따라 갔다고 말합니다. 말하자면 이런 식의 결단을 했습니다. “우리는 가는 길을 모른다. 당신이 길을 잃으면 우리는 다 죽는다. 우리는 당신만 믿고 따라간다.”

지칠대로 지쳐 비탄에 빠졌던 다윗도 인간의 도움이 아닌 그가 섬겼던 하나님께 도움을 청했습니다. 시편 61편 2절은 이렇게 기록합니다. “내 마음이 약해질 때에 땅 끝에서부터 주께 부르짖으오리니 나보다 높은 바위에 나를 인도하소서.” 그는 하나님의 임재 속으로 새롭게 인도되는 안전과 구원을 갈망하였습니다(3-4절).

성경에서 “각기 제 길로 간”(이사야 53:6) 양들이라 표현한 사람들의 삶에는 하나님의 인도하심이 반드시 필요합니다. 우리는 혼자 있으면 무너진 세상의 사막에서 길을 잃고 절망하게 됩니다.

그러나 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다! 우리에게는 “쉴만한 물 가로”인도하시고 영혼을 소생시키시고 안내하시는 목자가 계십니다(시편 23:2-3).

오늘 주님의 인도가 필요한 곳은 어디입니까? 주님께 간구하십시오. 그분은 당신을 결코 홀로 버려두지 않으실 것입니다.

NEEDING HIS LEADING

Uncle Zaki was more than a friend to scholar Kenneth Bailey; he was his trusted guide on challenging excursions into the vast Sahara. By following Uncle Zaki, Bailey says that he and his team were demonstrating their complete trust in him. In essence, they were affirming, “We don’t know the way to where we are going, and if you get us lost we will all die. We have placed our total trust in your leadership.”

In a time of great weariness and heartache, David looked beyond any human guide, seeking direction from the God he served. In Psalm 61:2 we read, “From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” He longed for the safety and relief of being ushered afresh into God’s presence (VV. 3–4).

God’s guidance in life is desperately needed for people the Scriptures describe as sheep that have “gone astray” (ISAIAH 53:6). Left to ourselves, we would be hopelessly lost in the desert of a broken world.

But we are not left to ourselves! We have a Shepherd who leads us “beside quiet waters,” refreshes our souls, and guides us (PSALM 23:2–3).

EASY DOES IT

My father and I used to fell trees and cut them to size with a two-man crosscut saw. Being young and energetic, I tried to force the saw into the cut. “Easy does it,” my father would say. “Let the saw do the work.” I think of Paul’s words in Philippians: “It is God who works in you” (2:13). Easy does it. Let Him do the work of changing us. C. S. Lewis said that growth is much more than reading what Christ said and carrying it out. He explained, “A real Person, Christ, . . . is doing things to you . . . gradually turning you permanently into . . . a new little Christ, a being which . . . shares in His power, joy, knowledge and eternity.” God is at that process today. Sit at the feet of Jesus and take in what He has to say. Pray. “Keep yourselves in God’s love” (JUDE 1:21), reminding yourself all day long that you are His. Rest in the assurance that He’s gradually changing you. “But shouldn’t we hunger and thirst for righteousness?” you ask. Picture a small child trying to get a gift high on a shelf, his eyes glittering with desire. His father, sensing that desire, brings the gift down to him. The work is God’s; the joy is ours. 최근 한 영화에서, 자칭 ‘천재’가 카메라 앞에서 큰 소리로 세상의 ‘공포, 부패, 무지, 빈곤’에 대해 외치며, 인생에는 신이 없고 부조리하다고 선언합니다. 현대의 많은 영화에서 그런 생각은 특이한 것이 아닌데, 흥미로운 점은 이것이 과연 어디로 귀결되느냐 하는 것입니다. 이 주인공은 마지막에 관객들을 향해 겨우 한다는 소리가 작은 행복을 찾기 위해 필요한 것은 무엇이든 하라고 애원합니다. 무엇이든 한다는 것은 그에게 있어 전통적인 도덕성을 포기하는 것까지 다 포함시킨 것입니다. 하지만 정말 “무엇이든 하는 것”이 효과가 있을까요? 인생의 공포에 직면하여 절망에 빠진 구약의 전도서 저자는 오래 전에 쾌락을 통해(전도서 2:1, 10), 그리고 큰 사업(4-6절), 부(7-9절), 철학적인 탐구를 통해(12-16절) 행복을 찾는 시도를 해보았습니다. 그 결과 어떤 평가를 내렸습니까? “모두 다 헛되어 바람을 잡으려는 것이로다”(17절). 이것들 중 죽음이나 재난, 불의를 면하게 해주는 것은 아무것도 없습니다(5:13-17).
오직 한 가지만이 전도서의 저자를 절망에서 건져줍니다. 삶의 여러 가지 시련에도 불구하고 우리는 하나님과 함께 생활하고 일할 때 비로소 충만함을 찾을 수 있습니다. “그분께서 주시지 않고서야 누가 먹을 수 있으며, 누가 즐길 수 있겠는가?”(2:25, 새번역). 인생은 때때로 무의미하게 느껴질지라도, “당신의 창조주를 기억하십시오”(12:1). 인생이 무엇인가 알아내려고 자신을 지치게 하지 말고, “하나님을 경외하고 그의 명령들을 지키십시오”(13절). 하나님을 우리의 중심에 두지 않는다면 인생의 즐거움과 슬픔은 환멸을 초래할 뿐입니다.

DO WHATEVER

In a recent film, a self-proclaimed “genius” rants to the camera about the world’s “horror, corruption, ignorance, and poverty,” declaring life to be godless and absurd. While such thinking isn’t unusual in many modern film scripts, what’s interesting is where it leads. In the end, the lead character turns to the audience and implores us to do whatever it takes to find a little happiness. For him, this includes leaving traditional morality behind. But will “do whatever” work? Facing his own despair at life’s horrors, the Old Testament writer of Ecclesiastes gave it a try long ago, searching for happiness through pleasure (ECCLESIASTES 2:1, 10), grand work projects (VV. 4–6), riches (VV. 7–9), and philosophical inquiry (VV. 12–16). And his assessment? “All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind” (V. 17). None of these things is immune to death, disaster, or injustice (5:13–17). Only one thing brings the writer of Ecclesiastes back from despair. Despite life’s trials, we can find fulfillment when God is part of our living and working: “for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?” (2:25). Life will at times feel meaningless, but “remember your Creator” (12:1). Don’t exhaust yourself trying to figure life out, but “fear God and keep his commandments” (V. 13). Without God as our center, life’s pleasures and sorrows lead only to disillusionment. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

THE MAKER OF THE MOON

After astronauts set the Eagle down in the Sea of Tranquility, Neil Armstrong said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He was the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. Other space travelers followed, including the commander of the last Apollo mission, Gene Cernan. “There I was, and there you are, the Earth— dynamic, overwhelming, and I felt . . . it was just too beautiful to happen by accident,” Cernan said, “There has to be somebody bigger than you and bigger than me.” Even from their unique view in deep space, these men understood their smallness in comparison to the vastness of the universe. The prophet Jeremiah also considered the immensity of God as Creator and Sustainer of the earth and beyond. The Maker of all promised to reveal Himself intimately as He offered His people love, forgiveness, and hope (JEREMIAH 31:33–34). Jeremiah affirms God’s enormity as He who “appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night” (V. 35). Our Creator and Lord Almighty will reign above all as He works to redeem all of His people (VV. 36–37). We’ll never finish exploring the immeasurable vastness of the heavens and depths of the earth’s foundations. But we can stand in awe at the complexity of the universe and trust the maker of the moon—and everything else. XOCHITL DIXON
