사랑으로 바로잡음

상쾌한 초봄 날씨에 아내를 동반하여 여행하는 것이 더할 나위 없이 좋았습니다. 그러나 함께 나선 좋은 시간이었지만 우리가 잘못된 길로 들어섰다는 것을 알려주는 빨강과 흰색의 경고 표시가 없었다면 순식간에 큰 일이 날 뻔하였습니다. 내가 차를 충분히 크게 회전하지 않은 탓에 “들어가지 마시오”라고 적힌 표지판을 바로 코앞에서 잠깐 볼 수 있었습니다. 바로 방향을 틀긴 했지만, 만약 길을 잘못 들어섰다는 것을 알려준 표지판을 그냥 지나쳐 아내와 나와 다른 사람들이 당했을 피해를 생각하면 지금도 아찔합니다.

야고보서의 마지막 말씀은 바로잡아주는 것의 중요성을 강조합니다. 해로울 수 있는 길이나 행동, 결정이나 욕망에서 우리를 “돌이키게” 해주는, 우리를 사랑하는 사람들의 중재가 필요하지 않은 사람이 누가 있겠습니까? 누군가 적절한 때에 담대하게 개입하지 않았다면 우리에게나 다른 사람들에게 어떤 피해가 일어났을지 누가 알겠습니까?

야고보는 사랑으로 바로잡는 것의 중요성을 강조하면서 이렇게 말합니다. “죄인을 미혹된 길에서 돌아서게 하는 자가 그의 영혼을 사망에서 구원할 것이며 허다한 죄를 덮을 것임이라”(5:20). 바로잡는 것은 하나님의 자비를 나타내는 것입니다. 우리 모두 타인의 행복에 사랑과 관심을 가지고 말과 행동으로 “진리를 떠난 사람을 돌아서게”(19절) 하는 하나님의 일에 쓰임받기를 원합니다.

KIND CORRECTION

The early spring weather was refreshing and my traveling companion, my wife, couldn’t have been better. But the beauty of those moments together could have quickly morphed into tragedy if it weren’t for a red and white warning sign that informed me I was headed in the wrong direction. Because I hadn’t turned wide enough, I momentarily saw a “Do Not Enter” sign staring me in the face. I quickly adjusted, but shudder to think of the harm I could have brought to my wife, myself, and others if I’d ignored the sign that reminded me I was going the wrong way.

The closing words of James emphasize the importance of correction. Who among us hasn’t needed to be “brought back” by those who care for us from paths or actions, decisions or desires that could’ve been hurtful? Who knows what harm might have been done to ourselves or others had someone not courageously intervened at the right time.

James stresses the value of kind correction with these words, “Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins” (5:20). Correction is an expression of God’s mercy. May our love and concern for the well-being of others compel us to speak and act in ways that He can use to “bring that person back” (V. 19). 예수님과의 이중주

한 어린이 음악회에서 피아노 앞에 선생님과 학생이 같이 앉는 것을 지켜보았습니다. 이중주를 시작하기 전 선생님은 몸을 기울여 마지막으로 몇 가지 주의를 속삭여주었습니다. 피아노에서 흘러나오는 음악을 들으니 학생은 쉬운 멜로디를 연주하고 선생님의 반주가 노래에 깊이와 풍부함을 더해주는 것을 알았습니다. 곡이 거의 끝날 즈음 선생님은 잘했다는 표시로 고개를 끄덕여주었습니다.

예수님 안에서의 우리의 삶은 독주보다는 이중주에 더 가깝습니다. 그러나 나는 예수님이 “바로 내 옆에 앉아 계신다”는 것과 내가 “연주”할 수 있는 것도 오직 주님의 능력과 인도하심 때문이라는 것을 잊을 때가 많습니다. 혼자 힘으로 피아노 건반을 정확하게 치려고 애쓰는 것처럼 하나님께도 내 힘으로 순종하려고 하지만 대개 가식과 공허함만 드러내고 끝나고 맙니다. 나의 제한된 능력으로 문제들을 해결하려 해보아도 다른 사람들과의 불화로 끝날 때가 많습니다.

그러나 나의 선생님이신 주님이 함께 계시면 모든 게 달라집니다. 나를 도우시는 예수님께 의지할 때 내 삶으로 하나님께 더 영광을 드리게 됩니다. 그리고 기쁨으로 섬기고, 마음껏 사랑하며, 나의 인간관계를 축복하시는 하나님께 놀라게 됩니다. 예수님이 첫 제자들에게 “그가 내 안에, 내가 그 안에 거하면 사람이 열매를 많이 맺나니 나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무 것도 할 수 없음이라”(요한복음 15:5)고 말씀하신 것처럼 말입니다.

우리는 날마다 좋은 선생님이신 예수님과 이중주를 연주합니다. 우리의 영적인 삶의 멜로디를 이어가는 것은 바로 주님의 은혜와 능력입니다.

A DIVINE DUET

At a children’s music recital, I watched a teacher and student seat themselves in front of a piano. Before their duet began, the teacher leaned over and whispered some last-minute instructions. As music flowed from the instrument, I noticed that the student played a simple melody while the teacher’s accompaniment added depth and richness to the song. Near the end of the piece, the teacher nodded his approval.

Our life in Jesus is much more like a duet than a solo performance. Sometimes, though, I forget that He’s “sitting next to me,” and it’s only by His power and guidance that I can “play” at all. I try to hit all the right notes on my own—to obey God in my own strength, but this usually ends up seeming fake and hollow. I try to handle problems with my limited ability, but the result is often discord with others.

My Teacher’s presence makes all the difference. When I rely on Jesus to help me, I find my life is more honoring to God. I serve joyfully, love freely, and am amazed as God blesses my relationships. It’s like Jesus told His first disciples, “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (JOHN 15:5).

Each day we play a duet with our good Teacher—it’s His grace and power that carry the melody of our spiritual lives. JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

빛을 발함

한 교회에서 5주 기도 특강을 하겠다고 약속한 나는 걱정이 태산 같았습니다. ‘수강생들이 내 강의를 좋아할까? 아니 나 같은 강사를 좋아할까?’ 나는 괜한 생각에 불안한 나머지 강의 계획이나 발표, 배포용 자료 등에 지나칠 정도로 공을 들였습니다. 그러면서도 정작 특강 1주일을 앞두고도 주변에 적극적으로 홍보하지 않았습니다. 그러나 기도 중에 나는 그 강의가 하나님을 빛나게 하는 하나의 섬김이라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 성령께서 내 강의를 사용해 사람들을 하나님 아버지께로 향하게 할 것이기에, 나는 공개강연에 대한 불안감을 없앨 수 있었습니다. 산상수훈에서 예수님은 제자들에게 이렇게 가르치셨습니다. “너희는 세상의 빛이라 산 위에 있는 동네가 숨겨지지 못할 것이요 사람이 등불을 켜서 말 아래에 두지 아니하고 등경 위에 두나니 이러므로 집 안 모든 사람에게 비치느니라” (마태복음 5:14–15) . 나는 그 말씀을 읽고 마침내 소셜미디어에 특강 광고를 올렸습니다. 거의 즉각적으로 사람들이 감사와 기대를 표하면서 등록하기 시작했습니다. 그들의 반응을 보면서 나는 “이같이 너희 이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라” (16절) 는 예수님의 가르침을 다시 묵상해 보았습니다. 그 가르침을 마음에 담아 나는 기쁨으로 그 강의를 할 수 있었습니다. 나의 작은 행동이 횃불이 되어, 다른 사람들에게 그들도 하나님을 위해 빛을 비추는데 격려가 될 수 있기를 기도합니다.

SHINING LIGHT

I felt nervous about a five-week prayer class I agreed to teach at a local church. Would the students like it? Would they like me? My anxiety was ill-focused, leading me to over-prepare lesson plans, presentation slides, and class handouts. Yet with a week to go, I still hadn’t encouraged many people to attend. In prayer, however, I was reminded that the class was a service that shined light on God. Because the Holy Spirit would use the class to point people to our heavenly Father, I could set aside my nervousness about public speaking. When Jesus taught His disciples in His Sermon on the Mount, He told them, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house” (MATTHEW 5:14–15) .
Reading those words, I finally sent out a class announcement on social media. Almost immediately, people started registering—expressing gratitude and excitement. Seeing their reactions, I reflected more on Jesus’ teaching: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (V. 16) . With that perspective, I taught the class with joy. I pray that my simple deed becomes a beacon and encourages others to shine their light for God as well. - PATRICIA RAYBON

약자를 보살피기

테레사 수녀가 노벨평화상을 수상했을 때 놀랍지 않았습니다. 예상대로 그녀는 굶주리고, 헐벗고, 갈 곳이 없고, 앞을 볼 수 없고, 나병에 걸리고, 배척당하고, 사랑받지 못하고, 내버려진 모든 사람들의 이름으로 그 상을 받았습니다. 그녀는 인생의 대부분을 그런 사람들을 보살피면서 살았습니다. 예수님은 어떤 처지에서도 사회적 약자를 보살피고 사랑하는 본을 보여주셨습니다. 병자보다 안식일 율법을 더 중시한 회당 지도자들과는 달리 (누가복음 13:14) , 예수님은 회당에서 병든 여인을 보시고 측은히 여기셨습니다. 주님은 신체적 장애를 넘어 속박당한 채 살고 있는 하나님의 아름다운 창조물을 보신 것입니다. 주님은 그 여인을 가까이 불러 고침 받았다고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러고는 그에게 “손을 얹으시자 그 여자가 즉시 허리를 펴고 하나님을
찬양하였습니다” (13절, 현대인의 성경) . 그날이 안식일이었기 때문에 주님이 그 여인에게 손을 댄 것으로 회당장이 분개했습니다. 그러나 안식일의 주인 (누가복음 6:5) 이신 예수님은 20년 가까이 불구의 몸으로 수치심을 안고 살아야 했던 그 여인을 측은히 보시고 고쳐주기로 결정하셨습니다. 우리는 얼마나 자주 어떤 사람은 동정을 받을 자격이 없다고 생각하는지 모릅니다. 혹은 우리가 다른 사람이 내세운 기준을 충족시키지 못해서 거절당한 경험이 있을 수도 있습니다. 우리가 사람보다 율법을 더 소중히
여긴 종교지도자와 같이 되지 않기를 바랍니다. 그 대신, 예수님을 본받아 다른 사람들을 긍휼과 사랑과 존귀함으로 대하도록 합시다.

TOUCH THE NEEDY

It wasn’t surprising when Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize. True to form, she received the award “in the name of the hun- gry, of the naked, of the homeless, of the blind, of the lepers, of all those who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society.” Those were the people she ministered to for most of her life. Jesus modeled how to care for and love the marginalized, regardless of circumstances. Unlike the synagogue leaders who respected the Sabbath law more than the sick (LUKE 13:14) , when Jesus saw an ill woman at the temple, He was moved with compassion. He looked beyond the physical impairment and saw God’s beautiful creation in bondage. He called her to Him and said she was healed. Then He “put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God” (V. 13) . By touching her, He upset the leader of the synagogue because it was the Sabbath. Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath (LUKE 6:5) , compassionately chose to heal the woman—a person who had faced discomfort and humiliation for nearly two decades. I wonder how often we see someone as underserving of our com-
passion. Or maybe we’ve experienced rejection because we didn’t meet somebody else’s standard. May we not be like the religious elite who cared more about rules than fellow humans. Instead, let’s follow Jesus’ example and treat others with compassion, love, and dignity. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

생각의 틀을 벗어난 은혜

톰은 밥의 회사에 조언해주는 법률회사에서 근무했습니다. 둘은 친구가 되어 사이좋게 지내다가 톰이 밥의 회사에서 수천 달러를 횡령하는 일이 발생했습니다. 밥은 이 사실을 알고는 실망하고 화가 났지만 그리스도를 믿는 그의 부사장으로부터 지혜로운 조언을 받았습니다. 부사장은 톰이 매우 수치스러워하고 회개하는 것을 보고 밥에게 고소를 취하하고 톰을 고용하라고 조언했습니다. “그에게 적당한 보수를 지불하여 배상을 할 수 있게 하십시오. 가장 감사하고 충직한 직원이 될 것입니다.” 밥은 그 조언을

GRACE OUTSIDE THE BOX

Tom worked for a law firm that advised Bob’s company. They became friends—until Tom embezzled thousands of dollars from the company. Bob was hurt and angry when he found out, but he received wise counsel from his vice president, a believer in Christ. The VP noticed Tom was deeply ashamed and repentant, and he advised Bob to drop the charges and hire Tom. “Pay him a modest salary so he can make restitution. You’ll never have a more grateful, loyal employee.” Bob did, and Tom was. Mephibosheth, grandson of King Saul, hadn’t done anything wrong, but he was in a tough spot when David became king. Most kings killed the royal bloodline. But David loved King Saul’s son Jonathan, and treated his surviving son as his own (SEE 2 SAMUEL 9:1–13) . His grace won a friend for life. Mephibosheth marveled that he “deserved nothing but death from my lord the king, but you gave your servant a place” (19:28) .
He remained loyal to David, even when David’s son Absalom chased David from Jerusalem (2 SAMUEL 16:1–4; 19:24–30) . Do you want a loyal friend for life? Someone so extraordinary may require you to do something extraordinary. When common sense says punish, choose grace. Hold them accountable, but give the undeserving a chance to make things right. You may never find a more grateful, devoted friend. Think outside the box, with grace. - MIKE WITTMER

“ 파파 존”이라 불리는 이가 말기 암 선고를 받았을 때, 그와 그의 아내 캐롤은 하나님이 그 병의 경과를 온라인에서 공유하라고 하는 부르심을 느꼈습니다. 그들 부부는 하나님이 자신들의 연약함을 통해 역사하시리라 믿고, 그들의 기쁨과 슬픔과 고통의 순간들을 2년 동안 온라인에 올렸습니다. 캐롤이 그녀의 남편이 “예수님의 품에 안겼다”고 썼을 때 수백 명의 사람들이 답장을 보내왔는데, 그중 많은 사람들이 그 부부가 병상일지를 공유해준 것에 대해 감사했습니다. 어떤 이는 언젠가 “우리 모두 죽을 수밖에

TRUSTING GOD IN TIMES OF SORROW

When a man known as “Papa John” learned he had terminal cancer, he and his wife, Carol, sensed God calling them to share their illness journey online. Believing that God would minister through their vulnerability, they posted their moments of joy and their sorrow and pain for two years. When Carol wrote that her husband “went into the outstretched arms of Jesus,” hundreds of people responded, with many thanking Carol for their openness. One person remarked that hearing about dying from a Christian point of view was healthy, for “we all have to die” someday. Another said that although she’d never met the couple personally, she couldn’t express how much encouragement she’d received through their witness of trusting God. Although Papa John sometimes felt excruciating pain, he and Carol shared their story so they could demonstrate how God upheld them. They knew their testimony would bear fruit for God, echoing what Paul wrote to Timothy when he suffered: “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day” (2 TIMOTHY 1:12) . God can use even the death of a loved one to strengthen our faith in Him (and the faith of others) through the grace we receive in Christ Jesus (V. 9) . “ 아빠, 왜 일하러 가야 해요?” 자기와 놀아주기를 바라는 마음으로 어린 딸이 내게 물었습니다. 나는 일을 가지 않고 딸아이와 놀아주고 싶었지만, 꼭 해야 할 일들이 쌓여있었습니다. 하지만 그 질문은 좋은 질문입니다. 왜 우리는 일을 합니까? 단지 우리 자신과 우리가 사랑하는 사람들의 필요를 채우기 위해서 입니까? 보수가 없는 일은 어떻습니까? 왜 그 일을 할까요? 창세기 2장은 하나님이 첫 번째 사람을 동산에 두어 “그것을 경작하며 지키게 하셨다” (15절) 고 말합니다. 우리 장인은 농부인데 땅과 가축을 너무 좋아해서 농사일을 한다고 자주 말합니다. 그런 경우는 참 좋습니다. 그러나 자기 일을 좋아하지 않는 사람들에 대한 의문은 여전히 남습니다. 왜 하나님은 우리에게 정해진 장소에서 정해진 일을 하도록 맡기셨을까요? 창세기 1장에 그 답이 있습니다. 우리는 하나님이 창조하신 이 세상을 잘 관리하도록 하나님의 형상으로 지음 받았습니다 (26절) . 믿지 않는 사람들은 태초에 “신들이” 인간을 그들의 노예로 만들었다고 말합니다. 창세기는 유일하신 참 하나님이 그분의 뜻에 따라 창조하신 이 세상을 관리하도록 하나님의 대리인으로 인간을 만드셨다고 분명히 말합니다. 우리가 지혜롭고 사랑이 넘치는 하나님의 명령을 이 세상에 잘 수행할 수 있기를 소원합니다. 일은 하나님의 영광을 위해 하나님의 세계를 경작하라는 소명입니다.

CULTIVATING GOD’S WORLD

“ Dad, why do you have to go to work?” The question from my young daughter was motivated by her desire to play with me. I would have preferred to skip work and spend time with her, but there was a growing list of things at work that required my attention. The question, nevertheless, is a good one. Why do we work? Is it simply to provide for ourselves and for the people we love? What about labor that’s unpaid—why do we do that? Genesis 2 tells us that God placed the first human in the garden to “work it and take care of it” (V. 15) . My father-in-law is a farmer, and he often tells me he farms for the sheer love of land and livestock. That’s beautiful, but it leaves lingering questions for those who don’t love their work. Why did God put us in a particular place with a particular assignment? Genesis 1 gives us the answer. We’re made in God’s image to carefully steward the world He made (V. 26) . Pagan stories of the way the world
began reveal “gods” making humans to be their slaves. Genesis declares that the one true God made humans to be His representatives—to steward what He’d made on His behalf. May we reflect His wise and loving order into the world. Work is a call to cultivate God’s world for His glory. - GLENN PACKIAM

2019년 레오나르도 다빈치의 죽음 500주년을 기념하여 세계적으로 큰 전시회들이 열렸습니다. 그가 그린 많은 그림과 과학적인 발견들이 전시되었지만, 다빈치의 작품으로 세계적으로 널리 인정받는 것은 ‘최후의 만찬’을 포함한 다섯 개의 완성된 그림뿐입니다. 이 복잡한 벽화는 요한복음에 묘사된 대로 예수님이 그의 제자들과 함께 마지막 식사를 하는 장면을 그리고 있습니다. 이 그림은 예수님이 “너희 중 하나가 나를 팔리라” (요한복음 13:21) 고 하신 말씀에 혼란스러워하는 제자들의 모습을 보여줍니다. 제자들은 당황하며 그 배반자가 누구일지 서로 갑론을박합니다. 그러는 동안 가룟 유다는 조용히 어둠 속으로 빠져나가 당국에 예수님과 제자들이 어디 있는가를 알려주었습니다. ‘배반당했습니다.’ 유다의 배반으로 인한 고통은 “내 빵을 먹는 자가 나를 배반하였다” (18절, 새번역) 고 하신 예수님의 말씀 속에 분명히 드러납니다. 음식을 같이 먹을 정도로 가까운 친구가 예수님을 해치기 위해 그 관계를 이용한 것입니다. 우리도 친구의 배반을 경험했을 수 있습니다. 우리는 그 고통에 어떻게 반응할 수 있을까요? 예수님이 자기를 배반할 자가 식탁에 함께 하고 있다는 사실을 지적하기 위해 (요한복음 13:18) 인용한 시편 41편 9절 말씀은 우리에게 소망을 줍니다. 다윗은 두 마음을 품은 가까운 친구를 보고 번민을 토로한 후, 그를 붙드시고 영원히 하나님 앞에 세우실 하나님의 사랑과 함께하심에 위로를 받습니다 (시편 41:11-12) . 친구들이 실망을 안겨줄 때, 우리는 하나님의 지속적인 사랑과 능력이 우리와 함께함으로 아무리 어려운 고통도 인내할 수 있도록 우리를 도와 주신다는 사실을 알기 때문에 위안을 받을 수 있습니다.

BETRAYED

In 2019, art exhibitions worldwide commemorated the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. While many of his drawings and scientific discoveries were showcased, there are only five finished paintings universally credited to da Vinci, including The Last Supper. This intricate mural depicts the final meal Jesus ate with His disciples, as described in the gospel of John. The painting captures the disciples’ confusion at Jesus’ statement, “One of you is going to betray me” (JOHN 13:21) . Perplexed, the disciples discussed who the betrayer might be—while Judas quietly slipped out into the night to alert the authorities of the whereabouts of his teacher and friend. Betrayed. The pain of Judas’ treachery is evident in Jesus’ words, “He who shared my bread has turned against me (V. 18) . A friend close enough to share a meal used that connection to harm Jesus. Each of us has likely experienced a friend’s betrayal. How can we respond to such pain? Psalm 41:9, which Jesus quoted to indicate His betrayer was present during the shared meal (JOHN 13:18) , offers hope. After David poured out his anguish at a close friend’s duplicity, he took solace in God’s love and presence that would uphold and set him in God’s presence forever (PSALM 41:11–12) . When friends disappoint, we can find comfort knowing God’s sustaining love and His empowering presence will be with us to help us

PLOD ON!

God loves to use people the world might overlook. William Carey was raised in a tiny village in the 1700s and had little formal education. He had limited success in his chosen trade and lived in poverty. But God gave him a passion for sharing the good news and called him to be a missionary. Carey learned Greek, Hebrew, and Latin and eventually translated the first New Testament into the Bengali language. Today he is regarded as a “father of modern missions,” but in a letter to his nephew he offered this humble assessment of his abilities: “I can plod. I can persevere.” When God calls us to a task, He also gives us strength to accomplish it regardless of our limitations. In Judges 6:12 the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” The angel then told him to rescue Israel from the Midianites who were raiding their towns and crops. But Gideon, who hadn’t earned the title of “mighty warrior,” humbly responded, “How can I save Israel? . . . I am the least in my family” (V. 15) . Still, God used Gideon to set His people free. The key to Gideon’s success was in the words, “the Lord is with you” (V. 12) . As we humbly walk with our Savior and rely on His strength, He will empower us to accomplish what’s only possible through Him. - JAMES BANKS

주님의 상처

나는 그레디와 대화를 나눈 후에, 왜 그가 악수를 하는 대신 “주먹을 맞대는 인사”를 선호하는지 알게 되었습니다. 악수를 하게 되면, 그가 자신을 자해하려고 했다가 생긴 손목의 흉터가 드러나기 때문입니다. 우리는 타인에게 받았거나 혹은 자해로 인한 몸이나 마음의 상처들을 흔히 감추려 합니다. 나는 그레디와 만나고 난 후, 예수님의 손과 발에 박힌 못 자국과 창에 찔린 옆구리의 상처에 대해 생각해 보았습니다. 그리스도께서는 그분의 상처들을 감추시기보다는 그것들을 주목하여 보라고 하셨습니다.
도마는 처음에 예수님이 죽음에서 부활하셨다는 것을 의심했습니다. 예수님은 그에게 “네 손가락을 이리 내밀어 내 손을 보고 네 손을 내밀어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보라 그리하여 믿음 없는 자가 되지 말고 믿는 자가 되라” (요한복음 20:27) 고 말씀하셨습니다. 도마는 예수님의 상처들을 직접 보고 또 주님의 놀라운 말씀을 듣고 나서, 그분이 예수님이심을 확신하게 되었습니다. 그는 믿음 안에서, “나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다” (28절) 라고 외쳤습니다. 그러고 나서 예수님은 주님이나 주님 몸의 상처를 보지 않고도 믿는 사람들에게 다음과 같은 특별한 축복을 선포하셨습니다. “보지 못하고 믿는 자들은 복되도다” (29절) . 지금껏 가장 좋은 소식은 주님의 상처가 우리가 타인이나 우리 자신에게 범한 ‘우리의’ 죄를 위함이라는 것입니다. 예수님의 죽음은 예수님을 믿고 도마처럼 “나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다!”라고 고백하는 모든 사람들의 죄를 용서하시기 위함입니다.

HIS SCARS

After my conversation with Grady, it occurred to me why his preferred greeting was a “fist bump” not a handshake. A handshake would’ve exposed the scars on his wrist—the result of his attempts to do himself harm. It’s not uncommon for us to hide our wounds—external or internal—caused by others or self-inflicted. In the wake of my interaction with Grady, I thought about Jesus’ physical scars, the wounds caused by nails pounded into His hands and feet and a spear thrust into His side. Rather than hiding His scars, Christ called attention to them. After Thomas initially doubted that Jesus had risen from the dead, He said to him, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” (JOHN 20:27) . When Thomas saw those scars for himself and heard Christ’s amazing words, he was convinced that it was Jesus. He exclaimed in belief, “My Lord and my God!” (V. 28) . Jesus then pronounced a special blessing for those who haven’t seen Him or His physical wounds but still believe in Him: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (V. 29) . The best news ever is that His scars were for our sins—our sins against others or ourselves. The death of Jesus is for the forgiveness of the sins of all who believe in Him and confess with Thomas, “My Lord and my God!” - ARTHUR JACKSON
