목적 있는 삶

“우리 휴가 간다!” 집 진입로를 빠져나가 여행의 첫발을 내디디면서 아내가 신이 나서 세 살 난 손자 오스틴에게 말했습니다. 그러자 꼬마 오스틴은 무언가 생각하는 얼굴로 아내를 쳐다보더니 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 휴가 가는 게 아니야. 임무 수행하러 가는 거야!”

손자가 “임무 수행”하러 간다는 개념을 어디서 들었는지는 알 수 없지만, 나는 그 말을 듣고 공항으로 운전해 가는 동안 곰곰이 생각해 보았습니다. ‘내가 휴가를 떠나 며칠간 휴식을 취할 때에도, 매순간 하나님과 함께하며 하나님을 위해 살기 위해 “임무 수행” 중인 것을 명심하고 있는가? 내가 하는 모든 일에서 주님을 섬길 것을 기억하고 있는가?’

바울 사도는 로마제국의 수도인 로마에 살고 있는 신자들에게 “부지런 하여 게으르지 말고 열심을 품고 주를 섬기라”(로마서 12:11)고 격려했습니다. 그의 요점은 예수님 안에서 우리는 목적을 가지고 열심을 다해 살아야 한다는 것이었습니다. 매우 평범한 순간까지도 기대하는 마음으로 하나님을 바라보며 그분의 목적을 위해 살 때 새로운 의미가 생깁니다.

비행기 좌석에 앉았을 때 나는 기도했습니다. “주님, 저는 당신의 것입니다. 이 여행에서 주님께서 저에게 어떤 일을 계획하시더라도 그것을 놓치지 않도록 도와주소서.”

매일 매일은 주님과 함께 영원히 중요한 임무를 수행하는 날입니다!

임무를 수행해본 적이 있습니까? 어떻게 삶을 온전히 하나님의 것이 되게 할 수 있을까요?

예수님, 저에게 은혜를 베푸셔서 주님 위해 살다가 어느 날 “잘하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아”(마태복음 25:23)라고 하시는 주님 말씀을 듣게 하소서.

LIVING ON PURPOSE

“We’re going on vacation!” my wife enthusiastically told our three-year-old grandson Austin as we pulled out of the driveway on the first leg of our trip. Little Austin looked at her thoughtfully and responded, “I’m not going on vacation. I’m going on a mission!”

We’re not sure where our grandson picked up the concept of going “on a mission,” but his comment gave me something to ponder as we drove to the airport: As I leave on this vacation and take a break for a few days, am I keeping in mind that I’m still “on a mission” to live each moment with and for God? Am I remembering to serve Him in everything I do?

The apostle Paul encouraged the believers living in Rome, the capital city of the Roman Empire, to “never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (ROMANS 12:11). His point was that our life in Jesus is meant to be lived intentionally and with enthusiasm. Even the most mundane moments gain new meaning as we look expectantly to God and live for His purposes.

As we settled into our seats on the plane, I prayed, “Lord, I’m yours. Whatever you have for me to do on this trip, please help me not to miss it.”

하나님이 주신 이름

‘립타이드, 배트 걸, 점프 스타트.’ 이들 단어는 우리 가족이 해마다 참여하는 여름 수련회의 상담자들에게 붙여진 별명들입니다. 수련회에서 상담자의 동료들이 지어준 이런 별명은 주로 황당했던 사건이나 재미있는 버릇, 또는 좋아하는 취미를 가지고 만듭니다.

별명은 수련회뿐 아니라 성경에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 예수님은 야고보와 요한 사도에게 “우레의 아들”이라는 별명을 붙여주셨습니다 (마가복음 3:17). 성경에서 누군가 ‘스스로 별명을 붙이는 것은 흔치 않은 일인데, 나오미라는 여인은 남편과 두 아들이 죽었기 때문에 사람들에게 “괴로움”이란 뜻의 “마라”로 자신을 불러달라고 했습니다(룻기 1:20). 그녀는 하나님께서 자기의 인생을 쓰라리게 하셨다고 느꼈습니다(21절).

그러나 나오미가 자신에게 붙인 새 별명은 오래 가지 않았습니다. 가족을 잃은 엄청난 충격이 그녀의 인생의 끝이 아니었기 때문입니다. 처절한 상황 가운데서도 하나님은 사랑하는 며느리 룻을 통해 그녀를 축복하셔서 결국에는 룻이 재혼하여 아들을 낳아 나오미에게 다시 가족을 이루어주셨습니다.

우리가 경험한 어려움이나 저지른 실수 때문에 자신에게 “실패자”, “사랑받지 못할 자”와 같은 쓰라린 별명을 붙이고 싶은 마음이 들 때도 있겠지만 그런 별명들이 우리 삶의 끝은 아닙니다. 우리는 그런 꼬리표들을 하나님께서 우리 각자에게 붙여주신 “사랑한 자”(로마서 9:25)라는 이름으로 바꾸고, 아무리 힘들 때라도 하나님의 공급하시는 손길을 찾을 수 있습니다.

NAMED BY GOD

Riptide. Batgirl. Jumpstart. These are a few names given to counselors at the summer camp our family attends every year. Created by their peers, the camp nicknames usually derive from an embarrassing incident, a funny habit, or a favorite hobby.

Nicknames aren’t limited to camp—we even find them used in the Bible. For example, Jesus dubs the apostles James and John the “sons of thunder” (MARK 3:17). It’s rare in Scripture for someone to give themselves a nickname, yet it happens when a woman named Naomi asks people to call her “Mara,” which means “bitterness” (RUTH 1:20), because both her husband and two sons had died. She felt that God had made her life bitter (V. 21).

The new name Naomi gave herself didn’t stick, however, because those devastating losses were not the end of her story. In the midst of her sorrow, God had blessed her with a loving daughter-in-law, Ruth, who eventually remarried and had a son, creating a family for Naomi again.

Although we might sometimes be tempted to give ourselves bitter nicknames, like “failure” or “unloved,” based on difficulties we’ve experienced or mistakes we’ve made, those names are not the end of our stories. We can replace those labels with the name God has given each of us, “loved one” (ROMANS 9:25), and look for the ways He’s providing for us in even the most challenging of times. LISA M. SAMRA

“탈락위기에 놓인”이라는 관용구는 1970년 5월 한 뉴스 기사에서 처음 사용되었습니다. 불확실한 상태를 의미하는 이 표현은 당시 신인이었던 자동차 경주 운전자 스티브 크리실로프와 관련하여 사용되었습니다. 그는 인디애나폴리스 500 경주에서 한 바퀴 도는 예선전을 느린 기록으로 통과해 “탈락위기에 놓였습니다.” 예선을 통과한 사람들 중 가장 느린 기록이었지만, 나중에 그는 그 기록으로 본선에 진출할 수 있었습니다.

ON THE BUBBLE

A news article in May 1970 contained one of the first uses of the idiom “on the bubble.” Referring to a state of uncertainty, the expression was used in relation to rookie race car driver Steve Krisiloff. He’d been “on the bubble,” having posted a slow qualifying lap for the Indianapolis 500. Later, it was confirmed that his time—though the slowest of those who qualified—allowed him to compete in the race.

We can feel at times that we’re “on the bubble,” uncertain we have what it takes to compete in or finish the race of life. When we’re feeling that way, it’s important to remember that in Jesus we’re never “on the bubble.” As children of God, our place in His kingdom is secure (JOHN 14:3). Our confidence flows from Him who chose Jesus to be the “cornerstone” on which our lives are built, and He chose us to be “living stones” filled with the Spirit of God, capable of being the people God created us to be (1 PETER 2:5–6).

In Christ, our future is secure as we hope in and follow Him (V. 6). For “[we] are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that [we] may declare the praises of him who called [us] out of darkness into his wonderful light” (V. 9).

In Jesus’ eyes we’re not “on the bubble.” We’re precious and loved (V. 4). RUTH O’REILLY-SMITH

해마다 열리는 국제 편지쓰기 대회에 백만 명이 넘는 젊은이들이 참여하고 있습니다. 2018년 대회의 주제는 이것이었습니다. “당신이 시간을 초월하여 전해지는 편지라고 가정할 때, 독자들에게 어떤 메시지를 전달하고 싶습니까?”

성령께서 영감을 주시고 인도해주신 덕분에 성경에는 오랜 시간을 거쳐 우리에게 전해진 서신서들이 있습니다. 교회가 성장하면서 예수님의 제자들이 유럽과 소아시아에 있는 교회들에게 그리스도 안에서의 새 삶을 이해시키려고 편지들을 썼는데 그 중 많은 편지들이 오늘날 우리가 읽는 성경 안에 담겨 있습니다.

TIME-TRAVELING LETTERS

More than a million young people take part in the International Letter-Writing Competition each year. In 2018, the theme of the competition was this: “Imagine you are a letter traveling through time. What message do you want to convey to your readers?”

In the Bible, we have a collection of letters that—thanks to the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit—have made their way through time to us. As the Christian church grew, Jesus’ disciples wrote to local churches across Europe and Asia Minor to help the people understand their new life in Christ; many of those letters were collected in the Bible we read today.

What did these letter-writers want to convey to readers? John explains, in his first letter, that he’s writing about “that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched.” He’s writing about his encounter with the living Christ (1 JOHN 1:1). He writes so that his readers may “have fellowship” with one another, and with “the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ” (V. 3). When we have fellowship together, he writes, our joy will be complete (V. 4). The letters in the Bible draw us into a fellowship that’s beyond time—fellowship with the eternal God. AMY PETERSO

주님의 죽음이 가져다준 생명

조안나 플랜더스 토마스는 남아프리카공화국에서 가장 폭력이 난무한 교도소에 수감된 남자 죄수들을 위해 사역하면서 마음을 변화시키는 그리스도의 능력에 대해 증거했습니다. 필립 얀시는 ‘하나님, 은혜가 사라졌어요’라는 그의 저서에서 그녀의 경험을 이렇게 말합니다. “조안나는 매일 죄수들을 방문하며 용서와 화해에 관한 단순한 복음 메시지를 전하기 시작했습니다. 그녀는 재소자들의 신뢰를 얻은 다음, 그들의 학대받던 어린 시절의 이야기를 다 말하게 하고, 갈등을 해결할 수 있는 더 좋은 방법을 제시해주었습니다. 그녀의 방문이 시작되기 전 해만 해도 교도소 내에서 재소자와 간수들에 대한 폭력사건이 279건을 기록했으나 그 다음 해에는 두 건만이 보고되었습니다.”

예수님을 믿는 우리는 새로운 피조물로서의 우리의 삶을 기뻐합니다. 그러나 그리스도께서 치르신 대가를 절대로 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 주님의 죽음은 우리에게 생명을 가져다줍니다. “하나님이 죄를 알지도 못하신 이를 우리를 대신하여 죄로 삼으신 것은 우리로 하여금 그 안에서 하나님의 의가 되게 하려 하심이라”(고린도후서 5:21).

HIS DEATH BRINGS LIFE

During her ministry to men incarcerated in South Africa’s most violent prison, Joanna Flanders-Thomas witnessed the power of Christ to transform hearts. In Vanishing Grace, Philip Yancey describes her experience: “Joanna started visiting prisoners daily, bringing them a simple gospel message of forgiveness and reconciliation. She earned their trust, got them to talk about their abusive childhoods, and showed them a better way of resolving conflicts. The year before her visits began, the prison recorded 279 acts of violence against inmates and guards; the next year there were two.”

The apostle Paul wrote, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17). While we may not always see that newness expressed as dramatically as Flanders-Thomas did, the gospel’s power to transform is the greatest hope providing force in the universe. New creations. What an amazing thought! The death of Jesus launches us on a journey of becoming like Him—a journey that will culminate when we see Him face to face (SEE 1 JOHN 3:1–3).

As believers in Jesus we celebrate our life as new creations. Yet we must never lose sight of what that cost Christ. His death brings us life. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:21). BILL CROWDER

떠나보내기

“아버님의 상태가 급격히 악화되고 있습니다.”라고 호스피스 병동의 간호사가 말했습니다. “급격히 악화되고 있다”는 말은 죽음을 눈앞에 둔 상태를 가리키는 말로, 내게는 막다른 길을 외롭게 걷고 있는 것처럼 낯설게 들렸습니다. 아버지가 돌아가시던 날, 아버지가 우리 말을 알아들을 수 있는지도 잘 모른 채 나는 여동생과 함께 아버지 침상 옆에 앉아 있었습니다. 우리는 아버지의 벗겨진 아름다운 머리에 입을 맞추고 하나님의 약속을 속삭이듯 들려주었습니다. 그리고 ‘오 신실하신 주’ 찬양을 부르며 시편23편을 들려주었습니다. 우리는 아버지를 사랑한다고, 그리고 우리 아버지가 되어주셔서 감사하다고 말했습니다. 아버지가 얼마나 예수님과 함께 있기를 원하는지 알았기 때문에 우리는 이제 가셔도 된다고 말했습니다. 그런 말들은 아버지를 보내드리는 고통스러운 첫 과정이었습니다. 몇 분 후에 아버지는 그를 기쁨으로 맞아줄 영원한 본향으로 들어가셨습니다.

사랑하는 이를 마지막으로 떠나보내는 것은 가슴 아픈 일입니다. 예수님도 그의 좋은 친구 나사로가 죽었을 때 눈물을 흘리셨습니다(요한복음 11:35). 그러나 하나님의 약속이 있기에 우리에게는 육신의 죽음을 넘어선 소망이 있습니다. 시편 116편 15절에 하나님께 속한 “경건한 자들”은 그분께 “귀중하다”고 기록하고 있습니다. 그들은 죽지만 다시 살아날 것입니다.

예수님은 “나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리라”(요한복음 11:25-26)고 약속하셨습니다. 우리가 하나님이 계신 곳에서 영원히 거할 것이라는 사실이 얼마나 큰 위로가 되는지 모릅니다.

LETTING GO

“Your father is actively dying,” said the hospice nurse. “Actively dying” refers to the final phase of the dying process and was a new term to me, one that felt strangely like traveling down a lonely one-way street. On my dad’s last day, not knowing if he could still hear us, my sister and I sat by his bed. We kissed the top of his beautiful bald head. We whispered God’s promises to him. We sang “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and quoted the 23rd Psalm. We told him we loved him and thanked him for being our dad. We knew his heart longed to be with Jesus, and we told him he could go. Speaking those words was the first painful step in letting go. A few minutes later, our dad was joyously welcomed into his eternal home.

The final release of a loved one is painful. Even Jesus’ tears flowed when His good friend Lazarus died (JOHN 11:35). But because of God’s promises, we have hope beyond physical death. Psalm 116:15 says that God’s “faithful servants”—those who belong to Him—are “precious” to Him. Though they die, they’ll be alive again.

Jesus promises, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (JOHN 11:25–26). What comfort it brings to know we’ll be in God’s presence forever. CINDY HESS KASPER

1960년대에 시카고 서부의 노스 론데일이라는 인구밀집 지역은 여러 인종의 사람들이 모여 사는 하나의 시범 구역이었습니다. 그곳에서 몇몇 중산층 흑인들이 “계약”에 따라 집을 구입했는데, 계약내용은 구입자가 집 소유주로서의 책임뿐 아니라 세입자의 불리한 조건을 다 부담한다는 것이었습니다. 그 계약으로 구입을 한 사람은 자기 자산을 전혀 쌓을 수 없었고, 또 매달 지불해야 할 돈을 한번이라도 지불하지 못하면 그 즉시 집을 살 때 지불한 착수금과 다달이 지불했던 집값, 그리고 집을 바로 잃어버렸습니다. 파렴치한 매도자는 집값을 더 올려서 팔고 집값을 한 번 지불하지 못한 가정은 집에서 쫓겨났습니다. 그러면 다른 가족이 다시 같은 조건으로 계약하여 집을 사게 되고, 탐욕이 불러일으킨 악순환은 그런 식으로 계속되었습니다.

사무엘은 그의 아들들을 이스라엘의 사사로 세웠습니다. 그러나 그들은 자기 탐욕에 이끌려 살았습니다. 그들은 “자기 아버지의 행위를 따르지 아니하고”(사무엘상 8:3) 아버지 사무엘의 온전한 모습과는 달리 “이익을 따라 뇌물을 받고” 자신들의 지위를 이용하여 사사로이 이익을 취했습니다. 이런 옳지 못한 행위는 이스라엘의 장로들과 하나님을 기쁘게 하지 못했고, 구약성경에 등장하는 수많은 왕들을 계속해서 세워나가게 되는 계기가 되었습니다(4-5절).

하나님의 방식대로 행하지 않으면 그 가치를 변질시킬 여지가 생기고 그 결과로 불의가 줄지어 나타나게 됩니다. 하나님의 방식대로 행한다는 것은 정직과 공의가 우리의 말뿐 아니라 행동에서도 분명히 드러나는 것을 의미합니다. 선한 행위는 그 자체가 궁극적인 목적이 될 수는 없지만, 언제나 다른 사람들이 그것을 보고 하늘에 계신 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있습니다.

IN THE FATHER’S WAYS

In the 1960s, the bustling community of North Lawndale, on Chicago’s West Side, was a pilot community for interracial living. A handful of middle-class African Americans bought homes there on “contract”— that combined the responsibilities of home ownership with the disadvantages of renting. In a contract sale, the buyer accrued no equity, and if he missed a single payment, he would immediately lose his down payment, all his monthly payments, and the property itself. Unscrupulous sellers sold at inflated prices, then the families were evicted when they missed a payment. Another family would buy on contract, and the cycle fueled by greed just kept going.

Samuel appointed his sons judges over Israel, and they were driven by greed. His sons “did not follow his ways” (1 SAMUEL 8:3). In contrast to Samuel’s integrity, his sons “turned aside after dishonest gain” and used their position to their own advantage. This unjust behavior displeased the elders of Israel and God, putting in motion a cycle of kings that fills the pages of the Old Testament (VV. 4–5).

To refuse to walk in God’s ways allows room for the perversion of those values, and as a result injustice flourishes. To walk in His ways means honesty and justice are clearly seen not only in our words but in our deeds as well. Those good deeds are never an end in themselves but always that others may see and honor our Father in heaven. JOHN BLASE

사랑받고 아름다우며 재능 있는

말콤은 십대 청소년 시절 겉으로는 자신 있어 보였습니다. 그러나 이 자신감은 가면이었습니다. 실상은 몹시 불안정한 집안 분위기로 두려움이 많고, 다른 사람의 인정을 받으려 몹시 애쓰며, 가족 문제를 자기 탓으로 잘못 인식하고 있었습니다. 그는 말합니다. “내가 기억하기로는 매일 아침 화장실에 들어가 거울을 들여다보면서 ‘너는 바보에다, 못 생겼고, 모두 네 탓이야.’라고 말했습니다.”

말콤의 자기혐오는 그가 스물한 살 때 예수님 안에서 하나님이 보시는 자신의 본 모습을 찾을 때까지 계속되었습니다. 그는 이렇게 회상합니다. “하나님은 무조건적으로 나를 사랑하시며, 그 어느 것도 이 사실을 바꾸지 못한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 하나님은 결코 나를 부끄러워하지 않으시며, 결코 나를 거절하지 않으신다는 것도 알았습니다.” 마침내 그는 거울을 들여다보며 전과 다르게 말하기 시작했습니다. “너는 사랑받고, 아름답고, 재능이 있어. 그리고 네 잘못이 아니야.”

LOVED, BEAUTIFUL, GIFTED

Malcolm appeared confident as a teenager. But this confidence was a mask. In truth, a turbulent home left him fearful, desperate for approval, and feeling falsely responsible for his family’s problems. “For as far back as I remember,” he says, “every morning I would go into the bathroom, look in the mirror, and say out loud to myself, ‘You are stupid, you are ugly, and it’s your fault.’”

Malcolm’s self-loathing continued until he was twenty-one, when he had a divine revelation of his identity in Jesus. “I realized that God loved me unconditionally and nothing would ever change that,” he recalls. “I could never embarrass God, and He would never reject me.” In time, Malcolm looked in the mirror and spoke to himself differently. “You are loved, you are beautiful, you are gifted,” he said, “and it’s not your fault.”

Malcolm’s experience illustrates what God’s Spirit does for the believer in Jesus—He frees us from fear by revealing how profoundly loved we are (ROMANS 8:15, 38–39), and confirms that we are children of God with all the benefits that status brings (8:16–17; 12:6–8). As a result, we can begin seeing ourselves correctly by having our thinking renewed (12:2–3).

Years later, Malcolm still whispers those words each day, reinforcing who God says he is. In the Father’s eyes he’s loved, beautiful, and gifted. And so are we. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

역사하시는 하나님의 자비

한 여인이 나를 함부로 대하고 비난하고 험담을 하여 분노가 끓어 올랐습니다. 나는 모든 사람들이 그녀가 한 짓을 알기를 원했고, 그녀 때문에 내가 겪은 고통만큼 그녀도 고통 받기를 원했습니다. 화가 극도로 치민 나는 두통이 관자놀이를 뚫고나올 정도가 되었습니다. 하지만 그 고통이 사라지게 해달라는 기도를 하기 시작하자 성령께서 나를 책망하셨습니다. 어떻게 하나님께 고통을 덜어달라고 간구하면서 복수를 계획할 수 있을까요? 하나님이 나를 돌보신다는 것을 믿으면서도 왜 그분이 이 상황을 해결하실 수 있다고 믿지 못한 걸까요? 나는 상처받은 사람들이 다시 다른 사람들에게 상처를 주곤 한다는 것을 알게 되면서, 하나님께 그녀를 용서하고 화해할 수 있게 해달라고 간구했습니다.

시편 기자 다윗도 부당한 처사를 당할 때 하나님을 의지하기가 어렵다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 다윗은 충성스러운 부하가 되기 위해 최선을 다했지만 사울 왕은 시기심에 빠져 그를 죽이려 했습니다(사무엘상 24:1-2). 하나님께서 다윗이 왕위를 취하도록 역사하시며 준비하시는 동안, 다윗은 고통을 겪으면서도 복수하기보다는 하나님을 공경하기를 선택하였습니다(3-7절). 그는 사울과 화해하기 위해 자신의 역할을 다 한 후 그 결과를 하나님의 손에 맡겼습니다(8-22절).

GOD’S MERCY AT WORK

My anger percolated when a woman mistreated me, blamed me, and gossiped about me. I wanted everyone to know what she’d done—wanted her to suffer as I’d suffered because of her behavior. I steamed with resentment until a headache pierced my temples. But as I began praying for my pain to go away, the Holy Spirit convicted me. How could I plot revenge while begging God for relief? If I believed He would care for me, why wouldn’t I trust Him to handle this situation? Knowing that people who are hurting often hurt other people, I asked God to help me forgive the woman and work toward reconciliation.

The psalmist David understood the difficulty of trusting God while enduring unfair treatment. Though David did his best to be a loving servant, King Saul succumbed to jealousy and wanted to murder him (1 SAMUEL 24:1–2). David suffered while God worked things out and prepared him to take the throne, but still he chose to honor God instead of seeking revenge (VV. 3–7). He did his part to reconcile with Saul and left the results in God’s hands (VV. 8–22).

When it seems others are getting away with wrongdoing, we struggle with the injustice. But with God’s mercy at work in our hearts and the hearts of others, we can forgive as He’s forgiven us and receive the blessings He’s prepared for us. XOCHITL DIXON

전쟁은 끝났다. 진짜로.

제2차 세계대전이 끝난 후 29년 동안, 히루 오노다는 자기 나라가 항복했다는 것을 믿지 않고 정글에서 숨어 지냈습니다. 일본군 장교들은 연합군을 감시하라는 명령을 내리고 오노다를 필리핀의 루방이라는 외딴 섬에 배치했었습니다. 평화 조약이 맺어지고 전투가 끝난 오랜 후에도 오노다는 야생에서 지냈습니다. 1974년에 오노다의 부대장이 그를 찾아 그 섬에 가서 그에게 전쟁이 끝났다는 것을 납득시켜 주었습니다.

오노다는 전쟁이 끝났다는 것을 믿지 않고 항복하기를 거부했기 때문에 30년 동안을 메마르고 고립된 삶을 살았습니다. 우리도 그와 비슷한 잘못을 할 수 있습니다. 바울은 “그리스도 예수와 합하여 세례를 받은 우리는 그의 죽으심과 합하여 세례를 받았다”(로마서 6:3)는 놀라운 진리를 선포합니다. 예수님은 십자가 위에서 사탄의 거짓과 죽음의 공포, 그리고 죄의 끈질긴 지배를 강력하고 신비스러운 방법으로 멸하셨습니다. 우리는 “죄에 대하여 죽고” “하나님께 대하여는 살아 있지만”(11절) 죄악이 아직도 지배하고 있는 것처럼 살아갈 때가 많습니다. 우리는 유혹에 넘어가고 죄의 꾐에 넘어지기도 하며, 예수님을 신뢰하지 못하고 거짓에 귀를 기울입니다. 그러나 우리는 굴복할 필요가 없으며, 거짓된 각본에 따라 살지 않아도 됩니다. 하나님의 은혜로 우리는 그리스도께서 승리하셨다는 진실된 이야기를 우리 것으로 받아들일 수 있습니다.

THE BATTLE’S OVER. REALLY.

For twenty-nine years after World War II ended, Hiroo Onoda hid in the jungle, refusing to believe his country had surrendered. Japanese military leaders had dispatched Onoda to a remote island in the Philippines (Lubang) with orders to spy on the Allied forces. Long after a peace treaty had been signed and hostilities ceased, Onoda remained in the wilderness. In 1974, Onoda’s commanding officer traveled to the island to find him and convince him the war was over.

For three decades, Onoda lived a meager, isolated existence, because he refused to surrender—refused to believe the conflict was done. We can make a similar mistake. Paul proclaims the stunning truth that “all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death” (ROMANS 6:3). On the cross, in a powerful, mysterious way, Jesus put to death Satan’s lies, death’s terror, and sin’s tenacious grip. Though we’re “dead to sin” and “alive to God” (V. 11), we often live as though evil still holds the power. We yield to temptation, succumbing to sin’s seduction. We listen to lies, failing to trust Jesus. But we don’t have to yield. We don’t have to live in a false narrative. By God’s grace we can embrace the true story of Christ’s victory.

While we’ll still wrestle with sin, liberation comes as we recognize that Jesus has already won the battle. May we live out that truth in His power. WINN COLLIER
