주님 앞에서 춤추는 것

오래 전 나는 아내 캐럴린과 함께 작은 교회를 방문했는데 예배 중에 한 여성이 통로에서 춤을 추기 시작했습니다. 그러자 곧 다른 사람들도 그녀를 따라 춤추기 시작했습니다. 아내와 나는 서로 쳐다보며 “나는 안 해!”라고 무언의 동의를 하였습니다. 우리는 엄숙한 예배를 선호하는 교회 전통에 익숙해 있어서 이런 다른 형태의 예배가 불편하게 느껴졌습니다.

마가복음에서 마리아의 “낭비”를 보여주는 이야기에 어떤 의미가 있다면 그것은 예수님을 향한 우리의 사랑을 표현하는 모습을 보고 다른 사람들이 불편을 느낄 수도 있다는 점입니다(마가복음 14:1-9). 1년 치 임금에 해당하는 금액을 기름 붓는데 사용한 마리아의 행동은 예수님의 제자들의 경멸을 받을 정도로 “어리석은” 것이었습니다. 제자들의 반응을 말해주려고 마가가 사용한 단어는 “코웃음치다”라는 단어인데 이는 경멸하고 조롱했다는 뜻입니다. 마리아는 예수님의 반응을 두려워하여 몸을 움츠렸을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 예수님은 마리아의 헌신적인 행동에 대해 그녀를 칭찬하고 그의 제자들로부터 그녀를 변호해 주셨습니다. 어떤 사람들은 마리아의 행위를 비현실적이라고 생각할지 모르지만 예수님은 그녀가 그런 행동을 하게끔 한 사랑을 보셨습니다. 예수님은 “너희가 어찌하여 그를 괴롭게 하느냐 그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라”(6절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

격식이 있든 없든, 조용하든 열광적이든, 각기 다른 형식으로 드리는 예배들은 모두 예수님을 향한 진실하고 넘치는 사랑을 표현하는 것입니다. 예수님은 사랑의 마음으로 드려지는 모든 예배를 받으시기에 합당한 분이십니다.

DANCING BEFORE THE LORD

A number of years ago, my wife and I visited a small church where during the worship service a woman began to dance in the aisle. She was soon joined by others. Carolyn and I looked at each other and an unspoken agreement passed between us: “Not me!” We come from church traditions that favor a serious liturgy, and this other form of worship was well beyond our comfort zone.

But if Mark’s story of Mary’s “waste” means anything at all, it suggests that our love for Jesus may express itself in ways that others find uncomfortable (MARK 14:1–9). A year’s wages were involved in Mary’s anointing. It was an “unwise” act that invited the disciples’ scorn. The word Mark uses to describe their reaction means “to snort” and suggests disdain and mockery. Mary may have cringed, fearing Jesus’ response. But He commended her for her act of devotion and defended her against His own disciples, for Jesus saw the love that prompted her action despite what some would consider the impractical nature of it. He said, “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me” (V. 6).

Different forms of worship—informal, formal, quiet, exuberant— represent a sincere outpouring of love for Jesus. He’s worthy of all worship that comes from a heart of love. - DAVID H. ROPER

만약을 대비한 우상들

샘은 하루에 두 번씩 퇴직연금 구좌를 확인합니다. 그는 30년 동안 저축했으며 주가가 오르면서 마침내 은퇴하기에 충분한 돈을 모으게 되었습니다. 주가가 폭락하지 않는다면 말입니다. 바로 이것이 두려워 샘은 그의 잔고를 계속 살펴보고 있습니다.

예레미야는 이에 대해 경고했습니다. “유다야 네 신들이 네 성읍의 수와 같도다 너희가 예루살렘 거리의 수대로 그 수치스러운 물건의 제단 곧 바알에게 분향하는 제단을 쌓았도다”(11:13).

우리도 유대인들처럼 우상숭배에 빠질 수 있다는 것을 아십니까? 재능이 있고 좋은 교육을 받고 돈이 있는 것은 좋습니다. 하지만 조심하지 않으면 그런 것에 의지하게 될 수도 있습니다. 우리는 죽을 때 하나님이 필요하다는 것을 압니다. 그리고 지금 우리를 축복해 달라고 하나님께 간구합니다. 하지만 그러면서도 우리는 동시에 만약을 대비하여 이런 더 작은 신들에게도 의지합니다.

당신은 무엇을 신뢰합니까? 만약을 대비한 우상이라 해도 우상은 우상 입니다. 하나님께서 주신 많은 은사들에 감사하십시오. 그러나 그 중 어느
것에도 의지하지 않는다고 하나님께 아뢰십시오. 믿음은 하나님만 온전히 의지하는 것입니다.

JUST-IN-CASE IDOLS

Sam checks his retirement account twice each day. He saved for thirty years, and with the boost of a rising stock market, finally has enough to retire. As long as stocks don’t plunge. This fear keeps Sam worrying about his balance.

Jeremiah warned about this: “You, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns; and the altars you have set up to burn incense to that shameful god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem” (11:13).

Judah’s idolatry is remarkable. They knew the Lord was God. How could they worship anyone else? They were hedging their bets. They needed the Lord for the afterlife, because only the true God could raise them from the dead. But what about now? Pagan gods promised health, wealth, and fertility, so why not pray to them too, just in case?

Can you see how Judah’s idolatry is also our temptation? It’s good to have talent, education, and money. But if we’re not careful, we might shift our confidence to them. We know we’ll need God when we die, and we’ll ask Him to bless us now. But we’ll also lean on these lesser gods, just in case.

Where is your trust? Back-up idols are still idols. Thank God for His many gifts, and tell Him you’re not relying on any of them. Your faith is riding entirely on Him. - MIKE WITTMER

재건하기

곧 시작될 공사 현장을 둘러보기 위해 지도자는 한밤중에 말을 타고 나섰습니다. 주변의 온통 파괴된 것들을 돌아보던 그는 부서진 성벽과 불에 탄 성문들을 보았습니다. 어떤 곳에는 널려있는 잔해 때문에 말을 타고 지나가기도 힘들었습니다. 그는 슬픈 마음으로 말을 돌려 집으로 향했습니다.

그는 성읍의 관리들에게 피해 규모를 보고하면서 “우리가 어떤 어려움에 처해 있는지는 여러분도 잘 아는 사실입니다”(느헤미야 2:17, 현대인의 성경)라고 하면서, 성읍은 폐허가 되었고 성읍을 지켜주던 성벽은 쓸모없게 되었다고 했습니다.

그러나 그는 비탄에 빠진 주민들에게 “하나님의 선한 손이 자기를 도우신 일”을 말하며 희망을 불어넣었고, 백성들은 그 자리에서 “재건 공사를 시작합시다”(18절, 현대인의 성경)라고 화답했습니다.

그리고 그들은 ‘공사를 시작했습니다.’

공사는 너무나 크고 적들의 방해도 있었지만 예루살렘 사람들은 느헤미아의 지도 아래 하나님을 믿으며 총력을 기울여 단 52일 만에 성벽을 다시 세웠습니다(6:15).

당신의 상황에서 어려워 보이지만 하나님께서 당신이 하기를 원하시는 일이 있는지요? 그것이 버리지 못할 것 같은 죄의 문제입니까? 아니면 하나님께 영광을 가로막는 누구와의 갈등 관계입니까? 아니면 하나님을 위한 일이지만 너무 어려운 일입니까?

하나님의 인도하심을 구하고(2:4-5), 문제를 분석하고(11-15절), 하나님께서 함께 하심을 아십시오(18절). 그리고 공사를 시작하십시오.

HOW TO REBUILD

It was nighttime when the leader set out by horseback to inspect the work that lay ahead. As he toured the destruction all around him, he saw city walls that had been destroyed and gates that had been burned. In some areas, the vast debris made it tough for his horse to get through. Saddened, the rider turned toward home.

When it came time to report the damage to the officials of the city, he began by saying, “You see the trouble we are in” (NEHEMIAH 2:17). He reported that the city was in ruins, and the protecting city wall had been rendered useless.

But then he made a statement that energized the troubled citizens: “I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me.” Immediately, the people replied, “Let us start rebuilding” (V. 18).

And they did.

With faith in God and all-out effort, despite enemy opposition and a seemingly impossible task, the people of Jerusalem—under Nehemiah’s leadership—rebuilt the wall in just fifty-two days (6:15).

As you consider your circumstances, is there something that looks difficult but that you know God wants you to do? A sin you can’t seem to get rid of? A relationship rift that’s not God-honoring? A task for Him that looks too hard?

Ask God for guidance (2:4–5), analyze the problem (VV. 11–15), and recognize His involvement (V. 18). Then start rebuilding. - DAVE BRANON

서로를 위해 지음 받은 사람들

스텔라가 말합니다. “제가 남편을 돌봐요. 그가 행복하면 저도 행복해요.” 남편 멀이 대답합니다. “아내가 곁에 있으면 저도 행복하답니다.” 멀과 스텔라는 결혼하여 79년을 함께 살았습니다. 최근에 멀이 요양원에 들어갔으나 그곳 생활을 힘들어했습니다. 그래서 스텔라는 주저없이 그를 집으로 데려왔습니다. 이제 멀은 101세이고 스텔라는 95세입니다. 아내는 걸어 다니는데 보행보조기를 써야 하지만 남편이 좋아하는 음식을 만드는 등 그를 위해 할 수 있는 일들을 사랑으로 감당합니다. 그러나 혼자서는 다 해낼 수가 없습니다. 그래서 스텔라가 할 수 없는 것은 손주들과 이웃이 도와줍니다.

스텔라와 멀이 함께하는 삶은 창세기 2장에서 하나님이 “사람이 혼자 사는 것이 좋지 아니하니 내가 그를 위하여 돕는 배필을 지으리라”(18절)고 하신 말씀의 좋은 본보기입니다. 하나님이 아담에게 데려온 다른 어떤 피조물도 그 말씀에 맞지 않았습니다. 아담에게는 그의 갈비뼈로 만든 하와만이 꼭 맞는 배필이자 동반자였습니다(19-24절).

MADE FOR EACH OTHER

“I take care of him. When he’s happy, I’m happy,” says Stella. Merle replies, “I’m happy when she’s around.” Merle and Stella have been married for 79 years. When Merle was recently admitted to a nursing home, he was miserable—so Stella gladly brought him home. He’s 101, and she’s 95. Though she needs a walker to get around, she lovingly does what she can for her husband, such as preparing the food he likes. But she couldn’t do it on her own. Grandchildren and neighbors help with the things Stella can’t manage.

Stella and Merle’s life together is an example of Genesis 2, where God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (V. 18). None of the creatures God brought before Adam fit that description. Only in Eve, made from the rib of Adam, did Adam find a suitable helper and companion (VV. 19–24).

Eve was the perfect companion for Adam, and through them God instituted marriage. This wasn’t only for the mutual aid of individuals but also to begin a family and to care for creation, which includes other people (1:28). From that first family came a community so that, whether married or single, old or young, none of us would be alone. As a community, God has given us the privilege of sharing “each other’s burdens” (GALATIANS 6:2). - ALYSON KIEDA

그분이 나를 변화시켰다

런던에서 가장 큰 매춘업소를 운영했던 존은 교도소에 들어갈 때만해도 자신이 착한 사람이라고 착각하고 있었습니다. 거기서 그는 커피와 케이크를 얻어먹으려고 교도소의 성경공부 모임에 참석하다가 다른 수감자들의 너무나 행복해하는 모습들을 보고는 충격을 받았습니다. 첫 찬양을 부르다 울음이 터진 그는 나중에 성경책을 받았습니다. 에스겔서를 읽는 중에 “마치 벼락이 치듯” 무언가가 그를 내리쳤고 그는 변화되었습니다. “만일 악인이 [그들의] 악을 떠나 정의와 공의를 행하면......반드시 살고 죽지 아니하리라”(18:27-28). 하나님의 말씀이 그에게서 살아 움직이자 이런 깨달음이 왔습니다. “나는 착한 사람이 아니었다...... 나는 악한 인간이었고 변해야 할 사람이었다.” 그는 목사님과 기도하다가 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 예수 그리스도를 찾았고 그분이 나를 변화시켜주셨습니다.”

에스겔서에 나오는 이 말씀은 하나님의 백성들이 유배지에 있을 때 주신 말씀이었습니다. 그들이 하나님에게서 돌아섰을 때에도 하나님은 그들이 죄악을 버리고 “마음과 영을 새롭게”(31절) 하기를 간절히 원하셨습니다. 그 말씀은 존이 죄인들을 불러 회개하게 하려고 오신 예수님 (누가복음 5:32)을 따르며 “돌이키고 살도록”(32절) 만들어 주었습니다.

우리도 성령님이 죄를 깨닫게 하실 때 응답하여 용서와 자유를 누릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

HE CHANGED ME

When John, who ran the biggest brothel in London, was sent to prison, he falsely believed, I’m a good guy. While there, he decided to attend the Bible study at the prison because there was cake and coffee, but he was struck by how happy the other inmates seemed to be. He started to cry during the first song and later received a Bible. Reading from the prophet Ezekiel changed him, hitting him “like a thunderbolt.” He read, “But if a wicked person turns away from [their] wickedness . . . and does what is just and right, . . . that person will surely live; they will not die” (18:27–28). God’s Word came alive to him and he realized, “I wasn’t a good guy . . . I was wicked and I needed to change.” While praying with the pastor, he said, “I found Jesus Christ and He changed me.”

These words from Ezekiel were spoken to God’s people when they were in exile. Although they had turned from God, He longed that they would rid themselves of their offenses and “get a new heart and a new spirit” (V. 31). Those words helped John to “Repent and live!” (V. 32) as he followed Jesus, the One who called sinners to repentance (LUKE 5:32).

May we respond to the Spirit’s conviction of sin, that we too might enjoy forgiveness and freedom. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

함께하면 이긴다

사무엘 바가가 목사는 한밤중에 한 교인으로부터 집으로 와 달라는 전화를 받았습니다. 도착해보니 온 집이 불길에 휩싸여 있었습니다. 아버지는 화상을 입었음에도 불구하고 아이를 구하려고 집으로 다시 들어가 의식이 없는 딸을 구해서 나왔습니다. 우간다의 시골 지역인 그 곳에서 병원은 6마일(10킬로미터)이나 떨어져 있었고, 교통수단이 없어 목사와 그 아버지는 아이를 안고 병원으로 달리기 시작했습니다. 아픈 아이를 한 사람이 안고 가다가 지치면 서로 교대했습니다. 그들은 마침내 함께 병원에 이르렀고 아버지와 딸은 치료를 받고 완전히 회복되었습니다.

출애굽기 17:8-13에서 하나님은 전쟁터에서 군사들을 이끈 여호수아와 하나님의 지팡이를 잡고 손을 들어 올리고 있었던 모세의 노력을 합하여 큰 승리를 이루어주셨습니다. 아론과 홀은 모세의 손이 지쳐 가면 그를 도와 해가 질 때까지 손을 한 쪽씩 붙들어 올려 적을 물리칠 수 있었습니다.

서로 의지하는 것은 참으로 중요합니다. 사랑의 하나님은 은혜 가운데 사람들을 그분의 대리인으로 우리에게 보내어 서로에게 유익하게 하십니다. 잘 들어주는 귀와 도움의 손길들, 지혜롭고 위로가 되며 충고가 되는 말들, 그리고 다른 많은 것들이 우리에게 주어지고, 이것은 다시 우리를 통해 다른 사람들에게 전해집니다. 함께하면 승리를 얻고 또 하나님께 영광이 됩니다!

TOGETHER WE WIN

In the middle of the night, Pastor Samuel Baggaga received a call asking him to come to the home of a church member. When he arrived, he found a house engulfed by fire. The father, though burned himself, had reentered the home to rescue one of his children and emerged with an unconscious daughter. The hospital, in this rural Ugandan setting, was six miles (10 kilometers) away. With no transportation available, the pastor and the father started running to the hospital with the child. When one of them tired from carrying the injured girl, the other one took over. Together they made the journey; the father and his daughter were treated and then fully recovered.

In Exodus 17:8–13 the Lord orchestrated a great victory that included the efforts of Joshua, who led fighting men on the battlefield; and Moses, who kept his hands raised while holding the staff of God. When Moses’ hands grew weary, Aaron and Hur assisted by each holding up one of his hands until the setting of the sun and the defeat of the enemy.

The value of interdependence can never be underestimated. God, in His kindness, graciously provides people as His agents for mutual good. Listening ears and helpful hands; wise, comforting, and correcting words—these and other resources come to us and through us to others. Together we win and God gets the glory! - ARTHUR JACKSON

이사야 시대의 하나님의 백성들에게는 “위에서 내려다보는 관점”이 필요했습니다. 그들은 하나님의 백성이라는 것에 대해 자긍심을 가졌지만 불순종했고 우상들을 포기하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 다른 관점을 가지고 계셨습니다. 그들의 불순종에도 불구하고 하나님의 뜻은 바벨론의 포로생활로부터 그들을 구원하는 것이었습니다. 왜였을까요? “나는 나를 위하여......내 영광을 다른 자에게 주지 아니하리라”(이사야 48:11). 위에서 내려다보시는 하나님의 관점에서 보면 우리 삶은 우리의 영광과 목적이 아닌 하나님의 영광과 목적을 위해서 있는 것입니다. 우리의 관심은 하나님과 그분의 계획에, 그리고 다른 사람들도 하나님을 찬양하게 하는데 두어야 합니다.

하나님의 영광이 바로 우리 인생의 관점이 되면 완전히 새로운 세계가 열립니다. 우리가 하나님에 대해서 새로이 알게 되는 것이 무엇이며, 또 그분이 우리를 위해서 무엇을 하실지는 오직 그분만이 아십니다. 하나님께서 무엇이 우리에게 좋은지 가르쳐주시고, 가야 할 길로 우리를 인도하실 것입니다(17절).

PERSPECTIVES FROM ABOVE

When Peter Welch was a young boy in the 1970s, using a metal detector was only a hobby. But since 1990, he’s been leading people from around the world on metal-detecting excursions. They’ve made thousands of discoveries—swords, ancient jewelry, coins. Using “Google Earth,” a computer program based on satellite imagery, they look for patterns in the landscape on farmland in the United Kingdom. It shows them where roads, buildings, and other structures may have been centuries ago. Peter says, “To have a perspective from above opens a whole new world.”

God’s people in Isaiah’s day needed “a perspective from above.” They prided themselves on being His people yet were disobedient and refused to give up their idols. God had another perspective. Despite their rebellion, He would rescue them from captivity to Babylon. Why? “For my own sake, . . . I will not yield my glory to another” (ISAIAH 48:11). God’s perspective from above is that life is for His glory and purpose— not ours. Our attention is to be given to Him and His plans and to pointing others to praise Him too.

Having God’s glory as our own life’s perspective opens a whole new world. Only He knows what we will discover about Him and what He has for us. God will teach us what is good for us and lead us along the paths we should follow (V. 17). - ANNE CETAS

“하나님 이야기”

마이크의 직장동료 대부분은 기독교에 대해서 별로 아는 것이 없었고 관심도 없어 보였습니다. 그러나 그들은 마이크는 다르다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 부활절을 앞둔 어느 날 누군가가 부활절이 유월절과 관련이 있다는 것을 들었다며 이 둘 사이에 어떤 관계가 있는지 궁금해했습니다. 그는 “이봐, 마이크! 이거 하나님 이야기인데 자네가 좀 알잖아. 유월절이 뭐야?” 라고 물었습니다.

그래서 마이크는 이집트에서 노예로 살던 이스라엘 백성들을 하나님께서 어떻게 이끌어내셨는지 말해주었습니다. 그는 열 가지 재앙에 대해 이야기하면서 집집마다 사람과 가축 중 처음 태어난 것은 다 죽임을 당했다는 것을 말해주며, 제물로 바친 희생양의 피를 문설주에 발라놓은 집은 죽음의 사자가 그냥 “넘어 갔다”고 설명해주었습니다. 그리고 예수님이 나중에 유월절 절기에 십자가에 못박혀 최종적인 희생양으로 돌아가신 이야기를 나누었습니다. 그 순간 마이크는 깨달았습니다. ‘아! 나 지금 전도하고 있네!’

예수님의 제자 베드로는 하나님을 모르는 문화권의 한 교회에 이렇게 조언했습니다. “너희 속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 묻는 자에게는 대답할 것을 항상 준비하라”(베드로전서 3:15).

마이크는 그의 믿음을 사람들 앞에 드러내왔기 때문에 그 믿음을 자연스럽게 나눌 기회를 얻었고, 그것도 “부드럽고 공손하게”(15절, 현대인의 성경) 할 수가 있었습니다.

우리도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 성령님의 도우심으로 삶에서 가장 중요한 “하나님 이야기”를 간단한 말로 설명할 수 있습니다.

“GOD STUFF”

Most of Mike’s co-workers knew little about Christianity, nor did they seem to care. But they knew he cared. One day near the Easter season, someone casually mentioned that they’d heard Easter had something to do with Passover and wondered what the connection was. “Hey, Mike!” he said. “You know about this God stuff. What’s Passover?”

So Mike explained how God brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. He told them about the ten plagues, including the death of the firstborn in every household. He explained how the death angel “passed over” the houses whose doorframes were covered by the blood of a sacrificed lamb. Then he shared how Jesus was later crucified at the Passover season as the once-and-for-all sacrificial Lamb. Suddenly Mike realized, Hey, I’m witnessing!

Peter the disciple gave advice to a church in a culture that didn’t know about God. He said, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 PETER 3:15).

Because Mike had been open about his faith, he got the chance to share that faith naturally, and he could do so with “gentleness and respect” (V. 15).

우리가 기뻐할 이유

새 학기가 시작되자 14살 난 씨제이는 매일 오후 버스에서 뛰어내려 춤을 추며 집으로 왔습니다. 엄마는 그가 방과 후 춤추며 집으로 오는 것을 촬영해서 영상을 사람들에게 보여주었습니다. 그가 춤을 추는 것은 인생이 즐겁고 또 자신의 몸짓 하나하나로 “사람들을 행복하게 하는 것”이 즐거웠기 때문입니다. 어느 날 청소차 인부 두 사람이 이 어린 소년으로부터 영감을 받아 바쁜 일손을 잠시 멈추고 그와 함께 발을 구르고 몸을 돌리며 흔들었습니다. 이 세 사람의 춤은 진정한 기쁨, 다른 사람도 기쁘게 만드는 그런 기쁨의 힘을 보여주었습니다.

시편 149편 기자는 지속적이고 조건 없는 기쁨의 근원이신 하나님을 그리고 있습니다. 그는 하나님의 백성들에게 함께 모여 “새 노래로 여호와께 노래하라”(1절)고 하면서, “자기를 지으신 이로 말미암아 즐거워하며” “그들의 왕으로 말미암아 즐거워하라”고 권합니다(2절). 그리고 우리에게 춤과 음악으로 하나님을 예배하라고 합니다(1-3절). 왜 그렇습니까? 그것은 “여호와께서는 자기 백성을 기뻐하시며 겸손한 자를 구원으로 아름답게 하시기”(4절) 때문입니다.

우리를 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지는 우리를 창조하셨고 우주를 운행하고 계십니다. 하나님은 그저 우리가 그의 사랑하는 자녀이기 때문에 우리를 기뻐하십니다. 하나님은 우리를 계획하여 지으셨고, 우리를 아시며, 우리와 개인적인 관계를 가지기를 원하십니다. 얼마나 영광스러운 일인지요! 우리를 사랑하시는 살아 계신 하나님이 바로 우리가 영원히 기뻐할 이유입니다. 우리는 하나님이 언제나 우리와 함께하신다는 바로 그 선물에 기뻐하며 창조주께서 주신 하루하루에 감사할 수 있습니다.

OUR REASON FOR JOY

When the school year began, fourteen-year-old C.J. would hop off the bus every afternoon and dance down his driveway. His mom recorded and shared videos of C.J.’s after-school boogie time. He danced because he enjoyed life and “making people happy” with every move. One day, two garbage collectors took time out of their busy work schedule to stomp, spin, and sway with the young boy who inspires others to dance with him. This trio demonstrates the power of sincere and infectious joy.

The writer of Psalm 149 describes the original source of enduring and unconditional joy—God. The psalmist encourages God’s people to join together and “sing to the Lord a new song” (V. 1). He invites Israel to “rejoice in their Maker” and “be glad in their King” (V. 2). He calls us to worship Him with dancing and music (VV. 1–3). Why? Because “the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory” (V. 4).

Our adoring Father created us and sustains the universe. He delights in us just because we’re His beloved children. He designed us, knows us, and invites us into a personal relationship with Him. What an honor! Our loving and living God is our reason for everlasting joy. We can rejoice in the gift of His constant presence and be grateful for every day our Maker has given us. - XOCHITL DIXON

참된 겸손과 진정 위대한 사람

미국 독립전쟁이 뜻밖에 영국의 항복으로 끝나자 많은 정치가들과 군지도자들은 조지 워싱턴 장군을 새로운 군주로 추대하고자 은밀히 계획했습니다. 온 세계는 절대적인 권력을 손에 쥘 수 있는 조지 워싱턴이 자유와 해방에 대한 자신의 높은 뜻을 계속 고수할 것인지 지켜보고 있었습니다. 그러나 영국 왕 조지 3세는 이와 다른 현실을 보았습니다. 만약 조지 워싱턴이 권력의 유혹을 떨치고 그의 버지니아 농장으로 돌아간다면 그는 “이 세상에서 가장 위대한 사람”이 될 것이라고 조지 3세는 확신하였습니다. 권력의 유혹을 거절하는 위대한 결단은 그의 진정 고결하고 큰 인물됨을 보여주는 것임을 왕은 알고 있었습니다.

바울도 이 진리를 알기에 우리에게 그리스도가 걸으셨던 겸손한 길을 따르라고 격려하였습니다. 예수님은 “근본 하나님의 본체”셨지만 “하나님과 동등됨을 취할 것으로 여기지 아니하시고”(빌립보서 2:6), 오히려 자신의 권세를 포기하고 “종”이 되어 “자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨습니다”(7-8절). 모든 권세를 가지셨던 그분은 사랑을 위해 그 권세의 남은 것 하나까지 모두 다 포기하였습니다.

그러나 궁극적으로 하나님은 예수 그리스도를 죄인의 십자가에서 “지극히 높은 위치로” 올려주시는 반전을 행하셨습니다(9절). 예수님은 우리에게 찬양을 요구하고 복종을 강요할 수 있었음에도 그분의 권세를 내려놓는 놀라운 모습을 직접 보여주심으로 우리의 경배와 헌신을 이끌어내셨습니다. 예수님은 완전한 겸손의 모습을 통하여 온 세상을 뒤집는 진정한 위대함을 보여주셨습니다.

TRULY HUMBLE, TRULY GREAT

As the American Revolution concluded with England’s improbable surrender, many politicians and military leaders maneuvered to make General George Washington a new monarch. The world watched, wondering if Washington would stick to his ideals of freedom and liberty when absolute power was within his grasp. England’s King George III saw another reality, however. He was convinced that if Washington resisted the power pull and returned to his Virginia farm, he would be “the greatest man in the world.” The king knew that the greatness evidenced in resisting the allure to power is a sign of true nobility and significance.

Paul knew this same truth and encouraged us to follow Christ’s humble way. Even though Jesus was “in very nature God,” he “did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage” (PHILIPPIANS 2:6). Instead, He surrendered His power, became “a servant” and “humbled himself by becoming obedient to death” (VV. 7–8) The One who held all power surrendered every bit of it for the sake of love.

And yet, in the ultimate reversal, God exalted Christ from a criminal’s cross “to the highest place” (V. 9). Jesus, who could demand our praise or force us to be obedient, laid down His power in a breathtaking act that won our worship and devotion. Through absolute humility, Jesus demonstrated true greatness, turning the world upside down. - WINN COLLIER
