어둠 속의 빛

엄청난 폭풍우가 우리가 새로 이사 온 마을을 휩쓸고 지나가고 나자 습도가 높아지고 하늘은 어두워졌습니다. 나는 우리 개 칼리를 데리고 저녁 산책을 나갔습니다. 우리 가족이 이 나라를 가로질러 멀리 이사해오면서 생긴 산적한 문제들이 내 마음을 점점 무겁게 누르고 있었습니다. 우리의 높은 희망과 기대와는 달리 많은 일들이 지금껏 제각기 빗나간 것 때문에 좌절감을 느끼며, 나는 칼리가 잔디밭의 냄새를 맡으면서 가도록 속도를 늦추었습니다. 집 옆으로 흐르는 개울의 물소리가 들렸습니다. 그리고 그 개울의 둔덕을 타고 오르는 야생화 꽃밭 위를 맴돌면서 작은 불빛들이 깜빡이고 있었습니다. ‘반딧불’이었습니다. 어둠을 가르며 반짝이는 빛을 보고 있으니 주님께서 내 마음을 평안 으로 감싸주셨습니다. 나는 시편 기자 다윗의 노래를 생각했습니다. “주님,
진실로 주님은 내 등불을 밝히십니다” (시편 18:28, 새번역) . 하나님께서 그의 어둠을 빛으로 바꾸신다고 선포하면서, 다윗은 주님의 공급하심과 보호하심에 대한 확고한 믿음을 보여주었습니다 (29-30절) . 하나님의 능력으로 그에게 닥친 어떤 일도 해결할 수 있었습니다 (32-35절) . 살아 계신 하나님이 모든 상황 속에서 그와 함께하신다는 것을 믿으며, 다윗은 열방 중에 하나님을 찬양하고 그분의 이름을 찬송할 것을 서원했습니다 (36-49절) . 우리가 인생의 예견치 못한 폭풍우를 견뎌내고 있든, 아니면 비가 지나간 뒤의 고요함을 즐기고 있든, 하나님이 한결같이 함께하시는 데서 오는 평안이 어둠을 뚫고 우리의 길을 밝혀줄 것입니다. 우리 살아 계신 하나님은 언제나 우리의 힘이시요, 피난처시요, 우리를 지탱하는 분이시요, 우리의 구원자가 되십니다.

LIGHT IN THE DARK

A severe thunderstorm passed through our new town, leaving high humidity and dark skies in its wake. I took our dog, Callie, for an evening stroll. The mounting challenges of my family’s crosscountry move grew heavier on my mind. Frustrated by the countless ways things had strayed so far from our high hopes and expectations, I slowed to let Callie sniff the grass. I listened to the creek that runs beside our house. Tiny lights flashed on and off while hovering over the patches of wildflowers climbing up the creek’s bank. Fireflies. The Lord wrapped me in peace as I watched the blinking lights cut- ting through the darkness. I thought of the psalmist David singing, “You, Lord, keep my lamp burning” (PSALM 18:28) . Proclaiming that God turns his darkness into light, David demonstrated confident faith in the Lord’s provision and protection (VV. 29–30) . With God’s strength, he could handle anything that came his way (VV. 32–35) . Trusting the living Lord to be with him through all circumstances, David promised to praise Him among the nations and sing the praises of His name (VV. 36–49) . Whether we’re enduring the unpredictable storms in life or enjoying the stillness after the rains have passed, the peace of God’s constant presence lights our way through the darkness. Our living God will always be our strength, our refuge, our sustainer, and our deliverer. - XOCHITL DIXON

값비싼 기쁨

디지털 음악 소리가 들리자 우리 여섯 명 모두 갑자기 뛰쳐나갔습니다. 재빨리 신발을 신은 친구가 있는가 하면 다른 친구들은 그냥 맨발로 문을 향해 뛰었습니다. 순식간에 우리 모두는 아이스크림 트럭을 쫓아 차도로 전력질주하고 있었습니다. 여름의 첫 더위에 차갑고 달콤한 간식보다 더 좋은 것이 어디 있을까요! 이처럼 우리에게는 규율이나 의무가 아니라 순전히 우리에게 가져다줄 기쁨을 위해 하는 일들이 있습니다. 마태복음 13:44-46에 나오는 두 가지 비유는 ‘무엇을 얻기 위해 모든 것을 팔았다’는 사실을 강조하고 있습니다. 우리는 이 이야기들이 희생에 관한 것이라고 생각할 수도 있겠지만, 요점은 그것이 아닙니다. 사실, 첫 번째 이야기는 그 사람이 모든 것을 팔아 밭을 산 이유가 “기쁨” 때문이었다고 분명히 말하고 있습니다. 죄책감이나 의무가 아닌 기쁨이 변화를 일으킵니다. 예수님은 우리 삶의 한 부분이 아닙니다. 주님은 우리의 전부를 요구하십니다. 이야기 속의 두 사람은 “소유를 다 팔았습니다” (44절) . 그러나 가장 중요한 것은 이것입니다. 소유한 전부를 다 판 것의 결과가 실제로 이익이라는 것입니다. 우리는 그 사실을 짐작하지 못했을 수도 있습니다. 그리스도인의 삶이 십자가를 지는 삶이 아닌가요? 네. 맞습니다. 하지만 우리가 죽으면 살고, 목숨을 잃으면 얻습니다. 우리가 “모든 것을 팔” 때 우리는 가장 큰 보화인 예수님을 얻게 됩니다! 기쁨이 그 이유이고, 그래서 순종함으로 반응하는 것입니다. 그럴 때, 그 보상으로 예수님을 알게 되는 보화를 얻게 됩니다.

COSTLY JOY

At the sound of the digital melody, all six of us sprang into action. Some slipped shoes on, others simply bolted for the door barefoot. Within seconds we were all sprinting down the driveway chasing the ice cream truck. It was the first warm day of summer, and there was no better way to celebrate than with a cold, sweet treat! There are things we do simply because of the joy it brings us, not out of discipline or obligation. In the pair of parables found in Matthew 13:44–46, the emphasis is selling everything to gain something else. We might think the stories are about sacrifice. But that’s not the point. In fact, the first story declares it was “joy” that led the man to sell everything and buy the field. Joy drives change—not guilt or duty. Jesus isn’t one segment of our lives; His claims on us are total. Both men in the stories “sold all” (V. 44) . But here’s the best part: the result of this selling of everything is actually gain. We may not have guessed that. Isn’t the Christian life about taking up your cross? Yes. It is. But when we die, we live; when we lose our life, we find it. When we “sell all,” we gain the greatest treasure: Jesus! Joy is the reason; surrender is the response. The treasure of knowing Jesus is the reward. - GLENN PACKIAM

소식이라고도 불리는 소동파는 중국의 가장 위대한 시인이자 수필가 중 한 사람입니다. 그는 유배 중에 보름달을 바라보며 그의 아우를 향한 그리움을 묘사하는 시를 썼습니다. “사람에겐 기쁨과 슬픔이 있고, 모이기도 헤어지기도 하며, 달도 차고 기울어짐이 있으니, 자고로 어느 것도 완전하지 않네. 다만 바라기는 사랑하는 이들이 오래 살아 천리 밖에서도 이 아름다운 달빛을 함께 바라볼 수 있다면.” 그의 시에는 전도서에 나오는 주제가 담겨 있습니다. 전도자라고 알려진 (1:1) 저자는 “울 때가 있고 웃을 때가 있으며......안을 때가 있고 안는 일을 멀리 할 때가 있다” (3:4-5) 고 했습니다. 소동파처럼 전도자도 두 가지 대비되는 행위를 연결함으로써 모든 좋은 일에는 반드시 그 끝이 찾아온다고 말하는 것 같습니다. 소동파가 달이 차고 기우는 것을 통해서 완벽한 것은 아무것도 없음을 보았듯이, 전도자도 창조물 안에서 하나님께서 만드신 세상에 대한 그분의 섭리에 따른 질서를 보았습니다. 하나님은 모든 일의 흐름을 관장하시며 “모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨습니다” (11절) . 인생은 예측할 수 없고 때로는 가슴 아픈 헤어짐이 가득할 수도 있지만, 모든 일은 하나님께서 지켜보시는 가운데 일어난다는 사실에서 우리는 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다. 사랑의 하나님께서 우리와 함께하시기 때문에 우리는 삶을 누리며 좋든 나쁘든 매 순간을 소중히 여길 수 있습니다.

TREASURE THE MOMENTS

Su Dongpo (also known as Su Shi) was one of China’s greatest poets and essayists. While in exile and gazing upon a full moon, he wrote a poem to describe how much he missed his brother. “We rejoice and grieve, gather and leave, while the moon waxes and wanes. Since times of old, nothing remains perfect,” he writes. “May our loved ones live long, beholding this beautiful scene together though thousands of miles apart.” His poem carries themes found in the book of Ecclesiastes. The author, known as the Teacher (1:1) , observed that there’s “a time to weep and a time to laugh . . . a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing” (3:4–5) . By pairing two contrasting activities, the
Teacher, like Su Dongpo, seems to suggest that all good things must inevitably come to an end. As Su Dongpo saw the waxing and waning of the moon as another sign that nothing remains perfect, the Teacher also saw in creation God’s providential ordering of the world He’d made. God oversees the course of events, and “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (V. 11) . Life may be unpredictable and sometimes filled with painful separations, but we can take heart that everything takes place under God’s gaze. We can enjoy life and treasure the moments—the good and the bad—for our loving God is with us. - POH FANG CHIA

바보짓을 하다

내게 가장 창피했던 경험은 개교 50주년을 맞이한 신학교에서 교수진 및 학생, 귀빈들에게 축사한 날이었습니다. 나는 원고를 손에 들고 연단으로 올라가 많은 사람들을 바라보았습니다. 그런데 내 눈에 학자 가운을 입고 매우 진지한 태도로 앞줄에 앉아 있는 저명한 교수들이 보였습니다. 나는 갑자기 감각을 잃어버렸습니다. 입이 바짝 마르면서 모든 생각이 나의 뇌리에서 떨어져 나갔습니다. 나는 처음 몇 문장을 더듬거리다가 즉흥적으로 말하기 시작했습니다. 내가 어디쯤 말하고 있는지 전혀 몰랐기 때문에, 횡설수설하며 정신없이 진도를 나아가 청중을 당황하게 만들었습니다. 간신히 축사를 끝내고 기다시피 자리로 돌아와 고개를 숙였습니다. 죽고 싶은 심정이었습니다. 그러나 나는 창피함도 그것이 겸손으로 이끌어준다면 좋은 것일 수 있다는 것을 배웠습니다. 왜냐하면 겸손은 하나님의 마음을 여는 열쇠이기 때문입니다. 성경은 “하나님은 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 주신다” (야고보서 4:6) 고 말합니다. 하나님은 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 부어주십니다. 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 겸손한 마음으로 크게 뉘우치며 내 말을 두렵게 여기는 자에게 은혜를 베푼다” (이사야 66:2, 현대인의 성경) . 우리가 하나님 앞에서 겸손할 때 그분이 우리를 높여주십니다 (야고보서 4:10) . 창피함과 부끄러움은 하나님께서 우리를 다시 빚으시도록 우리를

PLAYING THE FOOL

My most humiliating experience ever was the day I addressed the faculty, students, and friends of a seminary on its fifty-year anniversary. I approached the lectern with my manuscript in hand and looked out on a vast crowd, but my eye fell on the distinguished professors seated in the front row, garbed in academic gowns and looking very serious. I immediately took leave of my senses. My mouth dried up and detached itself from my brain. I fumbled the first few sentences and then I began to improvise. Since I had no idea where I was in my lecture, I began frantically turning pages, while talking a line of nonsense that baffled everyone. Somehow I made it through, crept back to my chair, and stared at the floor. I wanted to die. However, I learned that humiliation can be a good thing if it leads to humility, for this is the key that opens God’s heart. The Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble” JAMES 4:6) . He showers the humble with grace. God Himself said, “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word” (ISAIAH 66:2) . As we humble ourselves before God, He lifts us up (JAMES 4:10) . Humiliation and shame can bring us to God for His shaping. When DAVID H. ROPER

올려다보라!

영화제작자 와일리 오버스트릿이 낯선 사람들에게 성능 좋은 그의 망원경으로 보이는 달의 생생한 모습을 보여주자, 그들은 아주 가까이 보이는 달의 모습에 놀라 서로 속삭이면서 경외심을 드러냈습니다. 오버스트릿은 그렇게 영광스러운 광경을 보면 “우리 자신보다 훨씬 큰 어떤 것이 존재한다는 경이로움으로 가득 차게 된다.”고 설명했습니다. 시편 기자 다윗도 하나님이 창조하신 하늘의 빛에 감탄했습니다. “주의 손가락으로 만드신 주의 하늘과 주께서 베풀어 두신 달과 별들을 내가 보오니 사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까” (시편 8:3-4) . 하나님이 새 하늘과 새 땅을 창조하신 후에는 우리에게 더 이상 해와 달이 필요하지 않을 것이라는 것을 알게 되면, 다윗의 겸손한 질문에서 우리는 경외심을 갖지 않을 수 없습니다. 요한 사도는 그때 하나님의 빛나는 영광이 필요한 모든 빛을 발할 것이라고 말합니다. “그 성은 해나 달이 비침이 쓸 데 없으니 이는 하나님의 영광이 비치고 어린 양이 그 등불이 되심이라...... 거기에는 밤이 없음이라” (요한계시록 21:23-25) .
얼마나 놀라운 생각인지요! 그러나 우리는 단순히 세상의 빛이신 그리스도를 바라봄으로써 지금 그분의 하늘의 빛을 경험해볼 수 있습니다. 오버스트릿의 관점으로 말하면, “우리는 더 자주 올려다보아야 합니다.” 그렇게 함으로 우리가 하나님을 볼 수 있기를 간절히 바랍니다.

LOOK UP!

When filmmaker Wylie Overstreet showed strangers a live picture of the moon as seen through his powerful telescope, they were stunned at the up-close view, reacting with whispers and awe. To see such a glorious sight, Overstreet explained, “fills us with a sense of wonder that there’s something much bigger than ourselves.” The psalmist David also marveled at God’s heavenly light. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (PSALM 8:3–4) . David’s humbling question puts our awe in perspective when we learn that, after God creates His new heaven and earth, we’ll no longer need the moon or the sun. Instead, said John the apostle, God’s shimmering glory will provide all necessary light. “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. . . . There will be no night there” (REVELATION 21:23–25) . What an amazing thought! Yet we can experience His heavenly light now—simply by seeking Christ, the Light of the world. In Overstreet’s view, “We should look up more often.” As we do, may we see God. - PATRICIA RAYBON

직장동료 팀과 함께 프로젝트를 수행하게 된 앨빈은 심각한 문제에 부딪혔습니다. 그 프로젝트를 어떻게 진행해 나갈 것인가에 대해 팀과 생각이 너무 달랐기 때문이었습니다. 그들은 서로의 의견을 존중했지만, 접근 방식이 너무 달라서 곧 충돌이 일어날 것 같았습니다. 그러나 그런 충돌이 발생하기 전에 두 사람은 그들의 상사와 그 차이점을 의논하기로 했고, 그 상사는 두 사람을 각기 다른 팀에 합류시켰습니다. 결과적으로 그것은 현명한 조치로 판명되었습니다. 그날 앨빈은 ‘연합한다는 것이 언제나 일을

UNITED IN SEPARATION

Thrown into a project with his colleague Tim, Alvin faced a major challenge: he and Tim had very different ideas of how to go about it. While they respected each other’s opinions, their approaches were so different that conflict seemed mminent. Before conflict broke out, however, the two men agreed to discuss their differences with their boss, who put them on separate teams. It turned out to be a wise move. That day, Alvin learned this lesson: Being united doesn’t always mean doing things together. Abraham must have realized this truth when he suggested that he and Lot go their separate ways in Bethel (GENESIS 13:5–9) . Seeing that there wasn’t enough space for both their flocks, Abraham isely suggested parting company. But first, he stressed that they were “close relatives” (V. 8) , reminding Lot of their relationship. Then, with the greatest humility, he let his nephew have the first choice (V. 9) even though he, Abraham, was the senior man. It was, as one pastor described it, a “harmonious separation.” Being made uniquely by God, we may find that we sometimes work better separately to achieve the same goal. There’s a unity in diversity. May we never forget, however, that we’re still brothers and sisters in the family of God. We may do things differently, but we remain united - LESLIE KOH

요한 사도가 하나님 앞에 섰을 때 다양성은 천국 예배의 한 요소였습니다. 구원받은 성도들은 함께 이렇게 노래했습니다. “두루마리를 가지시고 그 인봉을 떼기에 합당하시도다 일찍이 죽임을 당하사 각 족속과 방언과 백성과 나라 가운데에서 사람들을 피로 사서 하나님께 드리시고 그들로 우리 하나님 앞에서 나라와 제사장들을 삼으셨으니 그들이 땅에서 왕 노릇 하리로다” (요한계시록 5:9-10) . 살아 계신 하나님의 자녀가 된 놀라운 사실을 기뻐하며 세상의 여러 그룹의 사람들이 함께 행진하는 천국의 모습을 상상해 보십시오! 예수님을 믿는 신자로서 오늘 그 다양성을 기뻐하는 우리가 될 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A PARADE OF COLORS

For decades, London has been one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. In 1933, journalist Glyn Roberts wrote of England’s great capital, “I still think the parade of peoples and colours and tongues is just about the best thing in London.” That “parade” is still in evidence today with the blended smells, sounds, and sights of a global community. The beauty of diversity is part of the breathtaking appeal of one of the world’s greatest cities. As with any city inhabited by human beings, however, London is not without its problems. Change brings challenges. Cultures sometimes clash. And that is one of the reasons no city built by human hands can compare to the wonder of our eternal home. When the apostle John was transported into the presence of God, diversity was one of the elements of heavenly worship, as the redeemed sang, “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth” (REVELATION 5:9–10) . Imagine heaven: a parade of every people group in the world celebrating the wonder of being children of the living God—together! As believers in Jesus, may we celebrate that diversity today. - BILL CROWDER

몇명의 재소자가 형량을 줄이려고 길가에서 쓰레기를 수거하던 중 감독관인 제임스가 갑자기 쓰러졌습니다. 그들은 제임스를 도우려고 달려와서 그가 위급한 상황인 것을 알게 되었습니다. 한 재소자가 제임스의 전화를 사용하여 도움을 요청했습니다. 그 후 경찰청에서는 재소자들이 뇌졸중을 앓던 감독관을 내버려두거나 도망갈 기회로 삼지 않고, 감독관이 즉시 치료를 받을 수 있도록 도와준 것에 감사의 뜻을 표했습니다. 재소자들의 친절한 행동은 바울과 실라가 투옥되었을 때 보여준 모습과 다르지 않습니다. 그들의 옷을 벗기고 매를 때려 감옥에 처넣은 후, 엄청난 지진이 일어나 그들을 묶은 사슬이 풀리고 감옥 문이 흔들려 열리게 되었습니다 (사도행전 16:23-26) . 잠에서 깬 간수는 죄수들이 당연히 도망갔을 것으로 생각하고, (죄수들이 도망한 것으로 처벌받을 것을 생각하여 먼저) 자신의 목숨을 끊으려 했습니다. 그때 바울이 “우리가 다 여기 있노라” (28절) 고 소리치자, 다른 죄수들과는 다른 그들의 모습에 간수는 크게 감동했습니다. 그 일로 간수는 그들이 경배하는 하나님에 관해 궁금해졌고, 마침내 그도
하나님을 믿게 되었습니다 (29-34절). 우리가 다른 사람을 대하는 방식에서 우리의 믿음과 가치가 드러납니다. 우리가 해를 끼치는 대신 선한 행동을 취할 때, 다른 사람들이 우리의 행동으로 말미암아 우리가 알고 사랑하는 하나님에 관해 궁금해할 수 있습니다.

NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE

Several inmates were collecting roadside garbage to reduce their jail time when their supervisor, James, collapsed. They rushed to his aid and realized he was having a medical emergency. One inmate borrowed James’ phone to call for help. The sheriff’s depart-ment later thanked the inmates for helping get their supervisor prompt medical attention, especially because they could have instead neglected him—to his great detriment as he was having a stroke—or used the situation to their own advantage to escape. The kindness of the inmates’ actions is not unlike those of Paul and Silas when they were imprisoned. After they’d been stripped, beaten, and thrown into prison, an earthquake struck so violently that it loosed their chains and shook the prison doors off their hinges (ACTS 16:23–26). When the jailer awoke, he naturally assumed the prisoners had fled, so he prepared to take his own life (to preempt what would’ve been his
punishment for their escape). When Paul shouted, “We are all here!” (V. 28) the jailer was so moved by their actions—uncharacteristic of prisoners—that he became curious about the God they worshiped, ultimately coming to believe in Him too (VV. 29–34). The way we treat others reveals what we believe and value. When we choose to do good instead of harm, our actions might just prompt KIRSTEN HOLMBERG them to wonder about the God we know and love. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

새 삶의 어리석은 방식

우리가 직접 경험해보기 전까지는 이해가 되지 않는 일들이 있습니다. 나는 첫 아이를 가졌을 때 출산에 관한 책을 여러 권 읽었고, 진통과 분만에 관한 다른 여자들의 경험담도 많이 들었습니다. 하지만 그 경험이 어떤 것인지 여전히 상상이 되지 않았습니다. 내 몸이 전혀 감당하지 못할 것 같았습니다! 바울은 고린도전서 1장에서 하나님 나라의 자녀로 태어나는 것, 곧 하나님이 그리스도를 통해 주시는 구원은 그것을 경험하지 않은 자들은 똑같이 이해할 수 없다고 기록합니다. 연약함과 패배, 치욕의 죽음을 상징하는 십자가를 통해 구원이 온다고 말하는 것이 “어리석게” 들릴 수도 있습니다. 그러나 이 “어리석음”이 바로 바울이 전한 구원이었습니다! 구원이 그렇게 올 거라고는 어느 누구도 상상하지 못했습니다. 어떤 이들은 구원이 힘 있는 정치지도자나 놀라운 기적을 통해 올 것이라고 생각했습니다. 또 어떤 이들은 자신의 학문적, 또는 철학적인 업적으로 구원을 얻을 줄 알았습니다 (고린도전서 1:22) . 그러나 하나님은 믿는 자들, 그리고 몸소 체험한 자들만이 이해할 수 있는 방식으로 구원을 행하심으로 모든 사람들을 놀라게 하셨습니다. 하나님은 십자가의 죽음이라는 수치스럽고 연약한 것으로 지혜와 능력의 기초를 삼으셨습니다. 하나님은 상상할 수 없는 방식으로 일하십니다. 그분은 세상의 연약하고 미련한 자들을 택하셔서 지혜로운 자들을 부끄럽게 하십니다

THE FOOLISH WAY OF NEW LIFE

Some things just don’t make sense until you experience them. When I was pregnant with my first child, I read multiple books about childbirth and listened to dozens of women tell their stories of labor and delivery. But I still couldn’t really imagine what the experience would be like. What my body was going to do seemed impossible! Paul writes in 1 Corinthians that birth into God’s kingdom, the salvation that God offers us through Christ, seems equally incomprehensible
to those who haven’t experienced it. It sounds like “foolishness” to say that salvation could come through a cross—a death marked by weak-ness, defeat, and humiliation. Yet this “foolishness” was the salvation that Paul preached! It wasn’t what anyone could have imagined it would be like. Some people thought that salvation would come through a strong political leader or a miraculous sign. Others thought that their own academic or philosophical achievements would be their salvation (1 CORINTHIANS 1:22). But God surprised everyone by bringing salvation in a way that would only make sense to those who believed, to those who experienced it. God took something shameful and weak—death on a cross—and made it the foundation of wisdom and power. God does the unimaginable. He chooses the weak and foolish things of the world to shame the wise (V. 27). And His surprising, confounding ways are always the best ways. - AMY PETERSON

실패 속에서의 친구

1939년 11월 27일, 세 명의 보물 사냥꾼이 영화 촬영팀과 함께 남가주에 있는 할리우드 볼 원형극장의 바깥쪽 아스팔트를 팠습니다. 그들은 75년 전에 그곳에 묻혔다고 소문이 난 금, 다이아몬드, 진주로 이루어진 커웽거 패스 보물을 찾고 있었습니다.

A FRIEND IN FAILURE

On November 27, 1939, three treasure hunters accompanied by film crews dug through the asphalt outside of the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater in Southern California. They were looking for the Cahuenga Pass treasure, consisting of gold, diamonds, and pearls rumored to have been buried there seventy-five years earlier. They never found it. After twenty-four days of digging, they struck a boulder and stopped. All they accomplished was a nine-foot-wide, forty-
two-foot-deep hole in the ground. They walked away dejected. To err is human—we all fail sometimes. Scripture tells us that young Mark walked away from Paul and Barnabas on a missionary trip “and had not continued with them in the work.” Because of this, “Paul did not think it wise to take him” on his next trip (ACTS 15:38) , which resulted in a strong disagreement with Barnabas. But in spite of his initial failings, Mark shows up years later in surprising ways. When Paul was lonely and in prison toward the end of his life, he asked for Mark and called him “helpful to me in my ministry” (2 TIMOTHY 4:11) . God even inspired Mark to write the gospel that bears his name. Mark’s life shows us that God won’t leave us to face our errors and failures alone. We have a Friend who’s greater than every mistake. As we follow our Savior, He’ll provide the help and strength we need. - JAMES BANKS
