그리스도를 나타내는 법

리지외의 성녀 테레사는 겨우 네 살 때 어머니가 돌아가셨습니다. 그때까지 쾌활하고 걱정 없던 테레사는 점점 소심하고 자주 불안해하는 아이가 되어갔습니다. 그러다 여러 해가 지나 어느 크리스마스이브에 모든 것이 변했습니다. 다니던 교회에서 성탄 예배를 마친 테레사는 하나님이 자기를 두려움에서 해방시켜 기쁨을 주시는 것을 경험했습니다. 테레사는 그 변화가 하늘나라를 떠나 인간으로 오신 예수님을 그녀 안에 거하게 하시는 하나님의 능력 때문이라고 여겼습니다.

그리스도께서 우리 안에 거하신다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요? 바울은 그것을 하나의 신비한 영적 사건이라고 골로새 교회에 말했습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 “만세와 만대로부터 감추어졌던”(골로새서 1:26) 것을 이제 그의 성도들에게 드러내신 것입니다. 하나님은 그들에게 “이 비밀은 너희 안에 계신 그리스도시니 곧 영광의 소망”(27절)임을 알게 하셨습니다. 이와 같이 그리스도께서 골로새 성도들 안에 거하심으로 새로운 삶의 기쁨을 경험했습니다. 그들은 더 이상 죄된 자신의 옛 모습에 묶이지 않게 되었습니다.

예수님께 우리의 구주가 되어주시기를 간구했던 우리 역시 이제 우리 안에 거하시는 그 비밀을 드러내며 살아가야 합니다. 예수님은 테레사에게 하신 것처럼 성령을 통해 우리를 두려움에서 해방시켜 주시고, 희락, 화평, 절제와 같은 성령의 열매를 우리 안에 자라가게 하실 수 있습니다(갈라디아서 5:22-23). 우리 안에 있는 놀라운 그리스도의 비밀에 감사드립시다.

HOW TO REFLECT CHRIST

Thérèse of Lisieux was a joyful and carefree child—until her mother died when she was just four years old. She became timid and easily agitated. But many years later on Christmas Eve, all of that changed. After celebrating the birth of Jesus with her church community, she experienced God releasing her from her fear and giving her joy. She attributed the change to the power of God leaving heaven and becoming a man, Jesus, and through His dwelling in her.

What does it mean for Christ to dwell within us? It’s a mystery, said Paul to the Colossian church. It’s one that God “kept hidden for ages and generations” (COLOSSIANS 1:26), but which He disclosed to God’s people. To them God revealed “the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (V. 27). Because Christ now dwelled in the Colossians, they experienced the joy of new life. No longer were they enslaved to the old self of sin.

If we’ve asked Jesus to be our Savior, we too live out this mystery of His dwelling in us. Through His Spirit, He can release us from fear, as He did Thérèse, and grow within us the fruit of His Spirit, such as joy, peace, and self-control (GALATIANS 5:22–23). Let’s give thanks for the wonderful mystery of Christ within us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

사랑 가운데 뿌리를 내림

“그것만 있으면 돼!” 메건이 말했습니다. 그녀는 제라늄에서 자른 줄기 끝에 꿀을 찍은 다음 퇴비가 채워진 화분에 심었습니다. 나는 메건에게 제라늄의 번식 방법을 배우고 있었습니다. 건강한 하나의 초목을 여러 개로 만들어, 꽃을 다른 사람들에게 나누어줄 수 있게 말입니다. 메건은 꿀이 어린 식물이 뿌리를 내리는 데 도움을 준다고 말했습니다.

메건이 일하는 모습을 보면서, 어떤 것들이 우리의 영적인 뿌리를 내리는 데 도움이 되는지 생각해 보았습니다. 무엇이 우리가 강하고 번성하는 믿음의 사람으로 성숙하도록 도와줄까요? 무엇이 우리가 시들거나 성장하지 못하게 되지 않도록 지켜줄까요? 바울은 에베소 사람들에게 쓴 편지에서 우리는 “사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어진다”(에베소서 3:17)고 말합니다. 이 사랑은 성령을 우리에게 주셔서 우리를 강하게 하시는 하나님으로부터 옵니다. 그리스도께서 우리 마음속에 거하십니다. 우리가 “그리스도의 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠한지를 깨닫기”(18절, 새번역) 시작할 때, 우리는 “하나님의 온갖 충만하심으로 충만해”(19절, 새번역)지면서 하나님의 임재를 그득히 경험할 수 있습니다.

ROOTED IN LOVE

“That’s all it takes!” Megan said. She had clipped a stem from her geranium plant, dipped the cut end into honey, and stuck it into a pot filled with compost. Megan was teaching me how to propagate geraniums: how to turn one healthy plant into many plants, so I would have flowers to share with others. The honey, she said, was to help the young plant establish roots.

Watching her work, I wondered what kinds of things help us establish spiritual roots. What helps us mature into strong, flourishing people of faith? What keeps us from withering up or failing to grow? Paul, writing to the Ephesians, says that we are “rooted and established in love” (EPHESIANS 3:17). This love comes from God, who strengthens us by giving us the Holy Spirit. Christ dwells in our hearts. And as we begin to “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (V. 18), we can have a rich experience of God’s presence as we’re “completely filled and flooded with God Himself” (V. 19 AMP).

Growing spiritually requires rooting into the love of God— meditating on the truth that we are beloved by the God who is able to do “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (V. 20). What an incredible basis for our faith! - AMY PETERSON

EYES TO SEE

I recently discovered the wonder of anamorphic art. Appearing at first as an assortment of random parts, an anamorphic sculpture only makes sense when viewed from the correct angle. In one piece, a series of vertical poles align to reveal a famous lead- er’s face. In another, a mass of cable becomes the outline of an elephant. Another artwork, made of hundreds of black dots suspended by wire, becomes a woman’s eye when seen correctly. The key to anamorphic art is viewing it from different angles until its meaning is revealed.

With thousands of verses of history, poetry, and more, the Bible can sometimes be hard to understand. But Scripture itself tells us how to unlock its meaning. Treat it like an anamorphic sculpture: view it from different angles and meditate on it deeply.

Christ’s parables work this way. Those who care enough to ponder them gain “eyes to see” their meaning (MATTHEW 13:10–16). Paul told Timothy to “reflect” on his words so God would give him insight (2 TIMOTHY 2:7). And the repeated refrain of Psalm 119 is how meditating on Scripture brings wisdom and insight, opening our eyes to see its meaning (119:18, 97–99).

How about pondering a single parable for a week or reading a gospel in one sitting? Spend some time viewing a verse from all angles. Go deep. Biblical insight comes from meditating on Scrip- ture, not just reading it.

결코 채울 수 없는 만족감

프랭크 보먼은 달을 한 바퀴 도는 첫 우주 임무를 지휘했지만 별로 감명 받지 못했습니다. 여행은 왕복 이틀이 걸렸는데, 프랭크는 멀미하며 토하기까지 했습니다. 그는 무중력을 경험하는 일은 재미있었다고 - 그것도 30초 동안만- 말했지만, 곧 그것에도 익숙해졌습니다. 달에 가까이 접근한 그는 분화구들로 칙칙하게 자국이 있는 달을 보았습니다. 동료 승무원들도 회색의 황무지 사진을 몇 장 찍더니 곧 지루해 했습니다.

프랭크는 아무도 가본 적이 없는 곳을 갔지만 만족할 수 없었습니다. 이렇듯 지구 밖의 경험도 쉽게 지루해진다면 아마도 지구 안의 경험에 대한 우리의 기대치를 좀 낮춰야 할 것 같습니다. 전도서 저자는 이 세상의 어떤 경험도 궁극적인 기쁨을 주지 못한다고 말했습니다. “눈은 보아도 족함이 없고 귀는 들어도 가득 차지 아니 하도다”(1:8). 우리가 황홀한 순간을 느낄지 몰라도 그 감동은 곧 사라지고 우리는 또 다른 감동을 찾아 나섭니다.

그러다가 프랭크는 달 뒤의 암흑에서 지구가 떠오르는 것을 보는 순간 황홀함을 느꼈습니다. 흰색과 파란색이 소용돌이치는 대리석처럼 우리 지구가 햇빛을 받아 빛나고 있었습니다. 이처럼 우리의 진정한 기쁨은 하나님의 아들이신 예수님이 우리 위에 비췰 때 찾아 옵니다. 예수님은 우리의 생명이시며, 의미와 사랑과 아름다움의 유일한 궁극적인 원천이십니다. 우리의 가장 큰 만족은 이 세상 밖으로부터 옵니다. 우리의 문제는 우리가 달까지는 갈 수 있지만 아직 충분할 만큼 더 멀리 갈 수 없다는 것입니다.

NEVER ENOUGH

Frank Borman commanded the first space mission that circled the moon. He wasn’t impressed. The trip took two days both ways. Frank got motion sickness and threw up. He said being weightless was cool—for thirty seconds. Then he got used to it. Up close he found the moon drab and pockmarked with craters. His crew took pictures of the gray wasteland, then became bored.

Frank went where no one had gone before. It wasn’t enough. If he quickly tired of an experience that was out of this world, perhaps we should lower our expectations for what lies in this one. The teacher of Ecclesiastes observed that no earthly experience delivers ultimate joy. “The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing” (1:8). We may feel moments of ecstasy, but our elation soon wears off and we seek the next thrill.

Frank had one exhilarating moment, when he saw the earth rise from the darkness behind the moon. Like a blue and white swirled marble, our world sparkled in the sun’s light. Similarly, our truest joy comes from the Son shining on us. Jesus is our life, the only ultimate source of meaning, love, and beauty. Our deepest satisfaction comes from out of this world. Our problem? We can go all the way to the moon, yet still not go far enough. - MIKE WITTMER

유머 작가 마이클 야코넬리는 소 목장 근처에 살면서 소들이 풀을 뜯다가 어떻게 길을 잃게 되는지 알게 되었습니다. 소는 항상 동화 속의 “더 푸른 초원”을 찾아 계속 이동합니다. 그러다가 목장의 울타리 근처에서 나무 그늘 아래 멋진 신선한 풀을 발견합니다. 그리고 울타리의 부서진 부분 바로 너머에 맛있어 보이는 나뭇잎 더미가 있습니다. 그러면 소가 울타리를 넘어 도로로 나가기도 합니다. 천천히 “조금씩 멀어지다가” 결국 길을 잃어버리게 되는 것입니다.

그렇게 방황하는 문제는 소만의 문제가 아닙니다. 양들도 길을 잃고, 무엇보다 사람들이 길을 잘 잃는 것 같습니다.

아마도 그런 이유로 하나님이 성경에서 우리를 양에 비유하시는 것 같습니다. 우리는 아주 쉽게 무모하게 타협하고 어리석은 결정을 내려 헤매고 “조금씩 멀어져” 가다가, 나중에는 진리로부터 얼마나 멀리 벗어났는지도 전혀 모르게 됩니다.

예수님은 바리새인들에게 길을 잃은 양에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 목자에게 양은 아주 귀한 것이어서 목자는 다른 양들을 남겨 두고 길을 잃은 양을 찾아 나섰습니다. 마침내 잃어버린 양을 찾았을 때 목자는 잔치를 벌였습니다! (누가복음 15:1-7).

이처럼 하나님도 그분께 돌아오는 자들로 기뻐하십니다. 예수님은 “나와 함께 즐기자 나의 잃은 양을 찾아내었노라”(6절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 우리를 구원하여 본향으로 인도하시려고 우리에게 구주 예수님을 보내주셨습니다.

WANDERING OFF

Living near cattle ranches as he did, humorist Michael Yaconelli noticed how cows were prone to wander while grazing. A cow would keep moving, always looking for the fabled “greener pastures.” Near the edge of the property, the cow might discover some cool fresh grass under a shade tree. Just beyond a broken-down part of the fence was a tasty clump of foliage. Then the cow might push far beyond the fence and out to the road. It slowly “nibbled” its way into being lost.

Cows aren’t alone in their roaming problem. Sheep also wander, and it’s likely that people have the biggest tendency of all to stray.

Perhaps that’s one of the reasons God compares us to sheep in the Bible. It can be easy to meander and “nibble our way” through reckless compromises and foolish decisions, never noticing how far away from the truth we’ve strayed.

Jesus told the Pharisees the story of a lost sheep. The sheep was of such value to the shepherd that he left his other sheep behind while he searched for the wandering one. And when he found the one that had strayed, He celebrated! (LUKE 15:1–7).

Such is the happiness of God over those who turn back to Him. Jesus said, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep” (V. 6). God has sent us a Savior to rescue us and bring us home. - CINDY HESS KASPER

약속을 지키시는 하나님

조나단은 혼인서약문을 따라 말할 때 신부 라숀에게 하는 서약의 중압감에 눌려 말을 더듬었습니다. 그는 생각했습니다. ‘지키기가 불가능한 약속인 줄 알면서 어떻게 그런 서약을 할 수 있지?’ 결혼식은 무사히 마쳤지만 지켜야 할 서약의 중압감은 여전히 그에게 남아 있었습니다. 결혼 피로연이 끝난 후, 조나단은 신부를 예배당으로 데리고 가서 두 시간이 넘게 라숀을 사랑하고 아끼겠다고 한 약속을 지킬 수 있게 해달라고 하나님께 기도했습니다.

조나단이 결혼식에서 두려움을 느꼈던 것은 자신의 인간적인 나약함을 알았기 때문이었습니다. 하지만 아브라함의 자손들을 통하여 열방에게 복을 주리라 약속하신 하나님(갈라디아서 3:16)은 그런 한계가 없습니다. 유대인 기독교 신자들에게 예수님을 믿는 믿음을 유지하기 위한 인내와 끈기를 북돋우기 위해 히브리서 저자는 아브라함에게 주신 하나님의 약속과 그의 기다림의 인내, 그리고 약속의 성취를 회상하고 있습니다(히브리서 6:13-15). 아브라함과 사라의 나이가 많은 것도 아브라함에게 “많은 후손”을 주겠다 (14절)는 하나님의 약속을 완성하는데 방해가 되지 못했습니다.

혹 힘이 없고 약한 인간이라서 하나님을 믿는데 어려움이 있습니까? 약속과 맹세와 서약을 지키려고 고군분투하고 있습니까? 고린도후서 12장 9절에서 하나님은 우리를 돕겠다고 약속하십니다. “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라.” 하나님은 36년 이상 조나단과 라숀이 혼인서약을 지킬 수 있도록 도우셨습니다. 하나님을 신뢰함으로 당신을 도와달라고 하십시오.

PROMISE-KEEPER

Gripped by the gravity of the promises he was making to LaShonne, Jonathan found himself stumbling as he repeated his wedding vows. He thought, How can I make these promises and not believe they’re possible to keep? He made it through the ceremony, but the weight of his commitments remained. After the reception, Jonathan led his wife to the chapel where he prayed—for more than two hours—that God would help him keep his promise to love and care for LaShonne.

Jonathan’s wedding-day fears were based on the recognition of his human frailties. But God, who promised to bless the nations through Abraham’s offspring (GALATIANS 3:16), has no such limitations. To challenge his Jewish Christian audience to perseverance and patience to continue in their faith in Jesus, the writer of Hebrews recalled God’s promises to Abraham, the patriarch’s patient waiting, and the fulfillment of what had been promised (HEBREWS 6:13–15). Abraham and Sarah’s status as senior citizens was no barrier to the fulfillment of God’s promise to give Abraham “many descendants” (V. 14).

Are you challenged to trust God despite being weak, frail, and human? Are you struggling to keep your commitments, to fulfill your pledges and vows? In 2 Corinthians 12:9, God promises to help us: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made per- fect in weakness.” For more than thirty-six years God has helped Jonathan and LaShonne to remain committed to their vows. 사랑의 자물쇠

나는 파리 퐁데자르 다리 곳곳에 달려 있는 연인 이름의 첫 글자가 새겨진 수십만 개의 자물쇠를 보고 놀라움을 금치 못했습니다. 센 강을 가로지르는 보행자 전용 다리에도 연인의 ‘영원한’ 사랑을 약속하는 그런 상징물들로 넘쳐났습니다. 2014년에 모두 50톤이나 되는 것으로 추정된 그 사랑의 자물쇠들 때문에 다리의 일부분이 무너져 자물쇠들을 철거해야 했습니다.

그토록 많은 사랑의 자물쇠는 변치 않는 사랑을 확인하고 싶어 하는 사람들의 간절한 소망을 보여주고 있습니다. 두 연인 간의 대화를 묘사한 구약의 아가서에서 여자는 “나를 도장 같이 마음에 품고 도장 같이 팔에 두라” (아가 8:6)고 요구하며 연인에게 변치 않는 사랑에 대한 소망을 표현합니다. 그 여자는 남자의 사랑이 그의 마음에 새겨진 도장이나 그의 손가락에 끼워진 반지처럼 안전하고 확실하기를 바랐습니다.

아가서에 표현된 영원한 낭만적인 사랑에 대한 소망은 우리가 성령으로 “인치심”을 받았다고(1:13) 하는 에베소서의 신약성경의 진리로 우리를 인도해 줍니다. 인간의 사랑은 변덕스럽고 자물쇠들은 다리에서 철거될 수 있지만, 우리 안에 거하시는 그리스도의 영은 하나님의 자녀 한 사람 한 사람에 대한 영원하고 헌신적인 사랑을 증명하는 영구적인 도장입니다.

LOVE LOCKS

I stood amazed at the hundreds of thousands of padlocks, many engraved with the initials of sweethearts, attached to every imaginable part of the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris. The pedestrian bridge across the Seine River was inundated with these symbols of love, a couple’s declaration of “forever” commitment. In 2014, the love locks were estimated to weigh a staggering fifty tons and had even caused a portion of the bridge to collapse, necessitating the locks’ removal.

The presence of so many love locks points to the deep longing we have as human beings for assurance that love is secure. In Song of Songs, an Old Testament book that depicts a dialogue between two lovers, the woman expresses her desire for secure love by asking her beloved to “place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm” (SONG OF SONGS 8:6). Her longing was to be as safe and secure in his love as a seal impressed on his heart or a ring on his finger.

The longing for enduring romantic love expressed in Song of Songs points us to the New Testament truth in Ephesians that we are marked with the “seal” of God’s Spirit (1:13). While human love can be fickle, and locks can be removed from a bridge, Christ’s Spirit living in us is a permanent seal demonstrating God’s never- ending, committed love for each of His children. - LISA M. 결코 너무 죄가 많지 않은

내가 다니던 전문대학 영어 교수가 “성경책을 만지면 내 손에 불이 붙을 것 같아.”라고 말하자 내 마음이 무너졌습니다. 그날 아침 우리가 읽던 소설에서 참고한 성경 구절을 찾으려고 꺼낸 성경을 보고 한 말이었습니다. 교수님은 자신이 용서 받기에는 너무 큰 죄를 지었다고 생각하는 것 같았습니다. 하지만 용기가 부족했던 나는 하나님의 사랑에 대해, 그리고 우리가 ‘언제나’ 하나님의 용서를 구할 수 있다는 성경의 말씀을 전하지 못했습니다.

느헤미야서에 회개와 용서의 본보기가 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 그들의 죄 때문에 유배되었지만 이제 예루살렘으로 돌아갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 그들이 예루살렘에 정착한 후 서기관 에스라가 그들에게 율법을 읽어주었습니다(느헤미야 7:73-8:3). 그들은 그들의 죄에도 불구하고 하나님이 “자신들을 버리거나” “떠나지 않으셨음”을 기억하며 그들의 죄를 고백했습니다 (9:17,19). 하나님은 그들이 부르짖을 때 “들으셨고”, 긍휼과 자비로 그들에게 오래 참으셨습니다(27-31절).

이처럼 하나님은 우리에게도 오래 참으십니다. 우리가 죄를 자백하고 하나님께로 돌아선다면 하나님은 우리를 버리지 않으십니다. 그 당시로 돌아갈 수만 있다면 나는 교수님에게 그분의 과거가 어떠하든 예수님이 그를 사랑하시며 예수님의 가족이 되기를 원하신다고 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 예수님은 당신과 나에 대해서도 똑같이 느끼십니다. 우리는 용서를 구하며 예수님께 나아갈 수 있고, 예수님은 우리를 용서해 주십니다.

NEVER TOO SINFUL

“If I touched a Bible, it would catch fire in my hands,” said my community college English professor. My heart sank. The novel we’d been reading that morning referenced a Bible verse, and when I pulled out my Bible to look it up, she noticed and commented. My professor seemed to think she was too sinful to be forgiven. Yet I wasn’t bold enough to tell her about God’s love— and that the Bible tells us we can always seek God’s forgiveness.

There’s an example of repentance and forgiveness in Nehemiah. The Israelites had been exiled because of their sin, but now they were allowed to return to Jerusalem. When they’d “settled in,” Ezra the scribe read the law to them (NEHEMIAH 7:73–8:3). They con- fessed their sins, remembering that despite their sin God “did not desert” or “abandon them” (9:17, 19). He “heard them” when they cried out; and in compassion and mercy, He was patient with them (VV. 27–31).

In a similar way, God is patient with us. He won’t abandon us if we choose to confess our sin and turn to Him. I wish I could go back and tell my professor that, no matter her past, Jesus loves her and wants her to be part of His family. He feels the same way about you and me. We can approach Him seeking forgiveness—and He will give it! - JULIE SCHWAB

하나님이 깔아주신 기억들

다 큰 아들이 어려움을 당했을 때, 나는 아이의 아빠가 실직한 해에 하나님이 끊임없이 보살피고 공급해주신 것을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 그리고 내 엄마가 백혈병과 투병하다 돌아가셨을 때, 하나님이 우리 가족을 강건케 하고 평안을 주신 것도 말해주었습니다. 또 성경에 기록된 하나님의 신실하심에 대한 이야기들을 강조하며 나는 하나님은 약속을 지키시는 선한 분이라는 것을 분명히 말해주었습니다. 나는 아들에게 우리 가정이 험한 산과 골짜기를 지날 때 하나님은 여전히 우리가 의지할 분이셨던 것을 떠올려주며, 하나님이 우리 가정에 깔아주신 기억의 길로 그를 인도했습니다. 우리가 어려움을 겪든 기뻐하든 어떤 상황에도, 하나님의 임재와 사랑과 은혜가 충분하다는 것은 확실했습니다.

믿음을 강화시키는 이 전략을 내가 고안한 것이라 주장하고 싶지만, 사실 이 이야기를 나누는 습관은 하나님이 다음 세대의 믿음을 고무시키기 위해 고안하신 것입니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 과거에 하나님이 하신 일들을 보았던 모든 것을 기억하고 있었기에, 하나님은 그들의 거룩하게 깔린 기억의 길을 따라 확신의 돌들을 놓아주셨습니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 그들이 하나님을 따를 때 하나님이 자신의 약속을 신실히 지키시는 것을 목도했습니다(신명기 4:3-6). 하나님은 언제나 그들의 기도를 들으시고 응답하셨습니다(7절). 이스라엘 백성들은 다음 세대와 함께 기뻐하고 추억하면서(9절), 유일하신 참 하나님이 나직이 말씀하시고 보존하신 거룩한 말씀을 함께 나눴습니다(10절).

위대하신 하나님의 위엄과 자비, 그리고 친밀한 사랑에 대해 말할 때 하나님의 신실하심은 영원하다는 것을 확인함으로써, 우리의 확신이나 다른 사람들의 믿음이 더욱 강건해질 수 있습니다.

GOD-PAVED MEMORIES

When my grown son faced a difficult situation, I reminded him about God’s constant care and provision during his dad’s year of unemployment. I recounted the times God strengthened our family and gave us peace while my mom fought and lost her battle with leukemia. Highlighting the stories of God’s faithfulness stitched into Scripture, I affirmed He was good at keeping His word. I led my son down our family’s God-paved memory lane, reminding him about the ways He remained reli- able through our valley and mountaintop moments. Whether we were struggling or celebrating, God’s presence, love, and grace proved sufficient.

Although I’d like to claim this faith-strengthening strategy as my own, God designed the habit of sharing stories to inspire the future generations’ belief in Him. As the Israelites remembered all they’d seen God do in the past, He placed cobblestones of confidence down their divinely paved memory lanes.

The Israelites had witnessed God holding true to His promises as they followed Him (DEUTERONOMY 4:3–6). He’d always heard and answered their prayers (V. 7). Rejoicing and reminiscing with the younger generations (V. 9), the Israelites shared the holy words breathed and preserved by the one true God (V. 10).

As we tell of our great God’s majesty, mercy, and intimate love, our convictions and the faith of others can be strengthened by the confirmation of His enduring trustworthiness. - XOCHITL DIXON

모험적인 우회

할리는 ‘이건 정말 시간 낭비야.’라고 생각했습니다. 보험사 직원이 한 번 더 만나자고 조르고 있었습니다. 할리는 또 지겨운 보험상품 이야기를 듣게 되리라고 생각했지만, 그 시간을 최대한 활용해 자신의 믿음에 대한 이야기를 할 기회를 만들어보기로 마음을 먹었습니다.

할리는 보험사 직원이 눈썹에 문신을 한 것을 보고 망설이다가 그 이유를 물었습니다. 직원은 행운을 가져다줄 것 같아서 문신을 했다고 대답했습니다. 할리의 질문은 재정에 관한 일반적인 대화에서 벗어나 모험적으로 돌려 말한 것이었지만, 그 질문으로 행운과 믿음에 관한 대화의 문이 열려 자기가 왜 예수님을 의지하는지에 대해 이야기할 수 있는 기회가 생기게 되었습니다. 그 “낭비”의 시간이 거룩한 만남의 시간으로 바뀌게 된 것입니다.

예수님도 모험적으로 돌아서 가신 적이 있습니다. 예수님은 유대에서 갈릴리로 여행하시는 동안 길을 벗어나 사마리아 여인과 대화를 나누셨습니다. 이것은 유대인에게 상상도 할 수 없는 일이었습니다. 심지어 그 여인은 같은 사마리아인조차도 피하는 간음한 여인이었습니다. 하지만 예수님은 그 여인과 대화를 나누심으로 결과적으로 많은 사람들을 구원에 이르게 하셨습니다 (요한복음 4:1-26, 39-42).

정말 보기 싫은 사람을 만나고 있습니까? 보통 때 피하고 있는 이웃과 자꾸 마주칩니까? 성경은 우리가 복음을 전하기 위해 “때를 얻든지 못 얻든지” 항상 준비되어 있어야 한다고 말합니다(디모데후서 4:2). 모험적인 우회를 해볼 것을 고려해 보십시오. 하나님이 오늘 당신에게 하나님을 전할 거룩한 기회를 주실지 누가 알겠습니까!

A RISKY DETOUR

What a waste of time, thought Harley. Her insurance agent was insisting they meet again. Harley knew it would be yet another boring sales pitch, but she decided to make the most of it by looking for an opportunity to talk about her faith.

Noticing that the agent’s eyebrows were tattooed, she hesi- tantly asked why and discovered that the woman did it because she felt it would bring her luck. Harley’s question was a risky detour from a routine chat about finances, but it opened the door to a conversation about luck and faith, which gave her an opportunity to talk about why she relied on Jesus. That “wasted” hour turned out to be a divine appointment.

Jesus also took a risky detour. While traveling from Judea to Galilee, He went out of His way to speak to a Samaritan, something unthinkable for a Jew. Worse, she was an adulterous woman avoided even by other Samaritans. Yet He ended up having a con- versation that led to the salvation of many (JOHN 4:1–26, 39–42).

Are you meeting someone you don’t really want to see? Do you keep bumping into a neighbor you normally avoid? The Bible reminds us to be always ready—“in season and out of season”—to share the good news (2 TIMOTHY 4:2). Consider taking a “risky detour.” Who knows, God may be giving you a divine opportunity to talk to someone about Him today! - LESLIE KOH
