영적 운전

내가 운전교육을 받을 때 배운 많은 세부 사항은 기억이 나지 않습니다. 그러나 어떤 이유인지 그때 배운 약어 S-I-P-D-E는 기억 속에 생생히 남아 있습니다.

이 첫 글자들은 스캔(훑어보기)의 S, 아이덴티파이(식별하기)의 I, 프리딕트 (예측하기)의 P, 디사이드(결정하기)의 D, 엑시큐트(실행하기)의 E에서 따온 것인데, 계속해서 연습하라고 배웠던 하나의 순서입니다. 우리는 도로를 ‘훑어보고’, 위험 요소를 ‘식별하고’, 위험 요소가 어떻게 될지 ‘예측하고’, 대응 방법을 ‘결정한’ 다음, 필요한 경우 계획을 ‘실행하도록’ 배웠습니다. 그것은 사고에 대비해 마음의 준비를 위해 만든 하나의 전략이었습니다.

나는 그 개념을 어떻게 우리의 영적 삶에 적용할 수 있을지 궁금합니다. 바울은 에베소서 5장에서 에베소의 그리스도인들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “그런즉 너희가 어떻게 행할지를 자세히 주의하여 지혜 없는 자 같이 하지 말고 오직 지혜 있는 자 같이 하라”(15절). 바울은 예수님 안에서의 새로운 삶과 상충되는 옛 삶의 방식 같은 위험요소들이 에베소 사람들을 잘못 인도할 수도 있다는 것을 알았습니다(8, 10-11절). 그래서 그는 성장하고 있는 교회에게 주의하라고 가르쳤던 것입니다.

‘그런즉 너희가 어떻게 행할지를 자세히 주의하여’ 라고 번역된 말은 문자적으로는 “너희가 어떻게 걷는지 보라”는 뜻입니다. 다른 말로 하면 주위를 돌아보라는 것입니다. 위험요소들을 주의하고, 술 취함이나 방탕한 생활과 같은 개인에게 닥치는 함정들을 피하십시오(18절). 그 대신 바울 사도가 말한 것처럼 우리 삶을 향한 하나님의 뜻을 알기를 구하면서(17절), 다른 믿는 사람들과 함께 주님을 찬양하고 감사하십시오(19-20절).

어떤 위험에 처해서도, 그리고 혹 넘어지더라도 우리는 주님의 무한한 능력과 은혜에 의지하여 자라가면서 그리스도 안에서의 새로운 삶을 경험할 수 있습니다.

SPIRITUAL DRIVING

I don’t remember many specifics about my driver’s education class. But for some reason, an acronym we learned, S-I-P-D-E, remains firmly lodged in my memory.

The letters stood for Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, and Execute, a process we were taught to practice continually. We were to scan the road, identify hazards, predict what the hazards might do, decide how we’d respond, and then, if necessary, execute that plan. It was a strategy for being intentional to avoid accidents.

I wonder how that idea might translate to our spiritual lives. In Ephesians 5, Paul told Ephesian believers, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise, but as wise” (V. 15). Paul knew certain hazards could derail the Ephesians—old ways of living at odds with their new life in Jesus (VV. 8, 10–11). So he instructed the growing church to pay attention.

The words translated “be very careful, then, how you live” literally mean “see how you walk.” In other words, look around. Notice hazards, and avoid personal pitfalls like drunkenness and wild living (V. 18). Instead, the apostle said, we can seek to learn God’s will for our lives (V. 17), while, with fellow believers, we sing to and give Him thanks (VV. 19–20).

No matter what hazards we face—and even when we stumble—we can experience our new life in Christ as we grow in dependence on His boundless power and grace. ADAM HOLZ

멋진 보상

교사인 도닐란은 언제나 읽기를 좋아하는 사람이었는데 어느 날 정말로 그것 때문에 득을 보게 되었습니다. 그녀는 여행을 계획하면서 긴 여행보험 약관을 읽다가 7 페이지에 있는 멋진 보상선물을 발견했습니다. “읽으면 득이 됩니다”라는 공모전의 일환으로 그 회사는 계약서를 거기까지 읽는 첫 번째 사람에게 만 불을 준다는 것이었습니다. 그 회사는 또한 아이들의 읽고 쓰는 능력 향상을 위해 도닐란의 지역에 있는 학교들에도 수천 불을 기부했습니다. 그녀는 말합니다. “저는 항상 계약서를 다 읽는 괴짜였습니다. 누구보다도 제가 가장 놀랐습니다!”

시편 기자는 눈이 열려 하나님에 관한 “놀라운 것을 보게” 되기를 원했습니다(시편 119:18). 그는 하나님께서 그의 백성들에게 잘 알려지기를 원하신다는 것을 이해했음이 틀림없습니다. 그래서 하나님께 더욱 가까이 다가가기를 간절히 바랐습니다. 그의 바람은 하나님이 누구신지, 그분이 이미 주신 것이 무엇인지, 그리고 어떻게 그분을 더 가까이 따를 수 있는지를 더 많이 아는 것이었습니다(24, 98절). 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “내가 주의 법을 어찌 그리 사랑하는지요 내가 그것을 종일 작은 소리로 읊조리나이다”(97절).

WONDERFUL REWARD

Donelan, a teacher, had always been a reader, but one day it literally paid off. She was planning a trip and reviewing her lengthy travel insurance policy when on page seven she discovered a wonderful reward. As part of their “It Pays to Read” contest, the company was giving $10,000 to the first person to read that far into the contract. They also donated thousands of dollars to schools in Donelan’s area for children’s literacy. She says, “I’ve always been that nerd who reads contracts. I was the most surprised of anyone!”

The psalmist wanted his eyes opened to “see wonderful things” about God (PSALM 119:18). He must have had an understanding that God wants to be known, and so he longed for a deeper closeness to Him. His desire was to see more of who God is, what He’d already given, and how to follow Him more closely (VV. 24, 98). He wrote, “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (V. 97).

We too have the privilege of taking time to ponder God, His character, and His provisions—to learn about and grow closer to Him. God longs to instruct us, guide us, and open our hearts to who He is. When we search for Him, He rewards us with greater wonder at who He is and the enjoyment of His presence! ANNE CETAS

어떻게 이렇게 됐지?

티파니는 칠흑 같이 어두운 에어 캐나다 비행기 안에서 잠이 깼습니다. 다른 승객들이 다 내리고 비행기가 계류장에 주차되는 동안에도 그녀는 여전히 안전벨트를 맨 채로 잠들어 있었습니다. ‘왜 아무도 깨우질 않았을까? 어떻게 이렇게 됐지?’ 그녀는 혼미한 머리를 흔들어 깨우며 기억을 살려보려고 애를 썼습니다.

당신도 전혀 예상치 못했던 일을 당해본 적이 있습니까? 너무나 젊은 나이에 치료법도 없는 병에 걸리거나, 직장에서 지난번 실적평가는 아주 좋았는데 자리가 없어지거나, 참으로 단란한 결혼생활을 하고 있었는데 이제는 임시직에 혼자 아이를 키우게 되는 경우들 말입니다.

‘어떻게 이렇게 됐지?’ “욥이 재 가운데 앉아”(욥기 2:8) 있을 때에도 그렇게 생각했을지 모릅니다. 욥은 자녀들과 부와 건강을 한 번에 다 잃어 버렸습니다. 그는 자기가 어떻게 거기까지 왔는지 짐작도 할 수 없었습니다. 단지 기억해야할 일이 있음을 알았을 뿐입니다.

욥은 그의 창조주를 기억하며 그분이 얼마나 선하신 분이었는지를 기억했습니다. 그는 아내에게 말했습니다. “우리가 하나님께 복도 받았는데 재난을 당하지 말라는 법이 있겠소?”(10절, 현대인의 성경). 욥은 신실함을 지키려면 이 선하신 하나님을 의지해야 한다는 것을 기억했습니다. 그래서 그는 한탄하며 하늘을 향해 절규했습니다. 그리고 소망 가운데 이렇게 애도했습니다. “내가 알기에는 나의 대속자가 살아 계시니...... 내가 육체 밖에서 하나님을 보리라”(욥기 19:25-26). 욥은 모든 이야기가 어떻게 시작해서 어떻게 끝나는지를 기억했기 때문에 소망에 매달릴 수 있었습니다.

HOW DID I GET HERE?

Tiffani awoke in the pitch-black darkness of an Air Canada jet. Still wearing her seat belt, she’d slept while the other passengers exited and the plane was parked. Why didn’t anyone wake her? How did she get here? She shook the cobwebs from her brain and tried to remember.

Have you found yourself in a place you never expected? You’re too young to have this disease, and there’s no cure. Your last review was excellent; why is your position being eliminated? You were enjoying the best years of your marriage. Now you’re starting over, as a single parent with a part-time job.

How did I get here? Job may have wondered as “he sat among the ashes” (JOB 2:8). He‘d lost his children, his wealth, and his health, in no time flat. He couldn’t have guessed how he got here; he just knew he had to remember.

Job remembered his Creator and how good He’d been. He told his wife, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (V. 10). Job remembered he could count on this good God to be faithful. So he lamented. He screamed at the heavens. And he mourned in hope, “I know that my redeemer lives,” and that “in my flesh I will see God” (19:25–26). Job clung to hope as he remembered how the story began and how it ends. MIKE WITTMER

수치심이나 무가치하다는 생각에 사로잡히면 온 마음으로 하나님을 섬기지 못하고 오히려 과거에 묶여버리고 맙니다. 만일 잘못한 일로 앞이 막혀 있다고 느낀다면, 하나님께서 주시는 용서와 새 생명의 선물을 온전히 믿게 해달라고 하나님께 간구하십시오. 하나님은 당신의 죄를 이미 바다 깊이 던져버리셨습니다!

NO FISHING ALLOWED

Holocaust survivor Corrie ten Boom knew the importance of forgiveness. In her book Tramp for the Lord, she says her favorite mental picture was of forgiven sins thrown into the sea. “When we confess our sins, God casts them into the deepest ocean, gone forever. . . . I believe God then places a sign out there that says No Fishing Allowed.”

She points to an important truth that believers in Jesus can sometimes fail to grasp—when God forgives our wrongdoing, we’re forgiven fully! We don’t have to keep dredging up our shameful deeds, wallowing in any mucky feelings. Rather we can accept His grace and forgiveness, following Him in freedom.

We see this idea of “no fishing allowed” in Psalm 130. The psalmist proclaims that although God is just, He forgives the sin of those who repent: “But with you there is forgiveness” (V. 4). As the psalmist waits for God, putting his trust in Him (V. 5), he states in faith that He “himself will redeem Israel from all their sins” (V. 8). Those who believe will find “full redemption” (V. 7).

When we’re caught in feelings of shame and unworthiness, we can’t serve God with our whole hearts. Instead, we’re restricted by our past. If you feel stymied by the wrong you’ve done, ask God to help you fully believe in His gift of forgiveness and new life. He’s cast your sins into the ocean! AMY BOUCHER PYE

수확 때까지 충성하라

내가 아는 한 여성은 동네 공원에서 행사를 계획하여 이웃에 있는 아이들 모두를 초대했습니다. 그녀는 자신의 믿음을 이웃과 나눌 수 있는 기회에 신이 나 있었습니다.

그녀는 자신을 도와줄 손주 세 명과 고등학생 두 명을 설득해서 과제를 주고, 여러 게임과 다른 활동들을 계획하고, 음식도 준비하고, 아이들에게 전해줄 예수님에 관한 성경 이야기를 준비한 후 아이들이 모이기를 기다렸습니다.

첫째 날에 단 한 명의 아이도 나타나지 않았습니다. 둘째 날, 셋째 날도 마찬가지였습니다. 하지만 친구는 매일 손주와 도우미들과 함께 계획된 그날그날의 순서를 진행했습니다.

나흘 째 되는 날, 그녀는 근처에 소풍을 온 가족을 발견하고는 아이들을 게임에 초대했습니다. 한 여자 아이가 와서 재미있게 놀고 식사를 함께 하며 예수님에 대한 이야기를 들었습니다. 아마도 세월이 지난 후에도 아이는 그 일을 기억할 것입니다. 결과가 어떻게 될지 누가 알 수 있을까요? 하나님은 갈라디아서를 통하여 이렇게 우리를 격려해 주십니다. “우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 포기하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라 그러므로 우리는 기회 있는 대로 모든 이에게 착한 일을 하되 더욱 믿음의 가정들에게 할지니라”(6:9–10).

숫자나 눈에 보이는 다른 성공의 척도를 가지고 염려하지 마십시오. 우리가 할 일은 하나님께서 하기를 바라시는 일에 충성을 다하고 그 수확은 하나님께 맡기는 것입니다. 결과를 결정하시는 분은 하나님이십니다.

FAITHFUL UNTIL THE HARVEST

A woman I know planned an event at a local park and invited all the neighborhood children to participate. She was excited about the opportunity to share her faith with her neighbors.

She recruited her three grandchildren and two high school students to help her, gave the assignments, planned a number of games and other activities, prepared food, prepared a Bible story about Jesus to present to the children, and waited for them to gather.

Not a single child showed up the first day. Or the second day. Or the third day. Yet, each day my friend went through that day’s activities with her grandchildren and helpers.

On the fourth day, she noticed a family picnicking nearby and invited the children to join in the games. One little girl came, entered into the fun, ate with them, and listened to the story about Jesus. Perhaps years from now she’ll remember. Who knows what the outcome will be? God, through the book of Galatians, encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people” (6:9–10).

Don’t worry about numbers or other visible measures of success. Our job is to be faithful to what He wants us to do and then leave the harvest to Him. God determines the outcomes. DAVID H. ROPER

황량한 곳에도 좋은 것은 있다

남편과 함께 와이오밍 주의 작지만 험한 산모퉁이를 답사할 때, 산쑥과 쐐기풀, 가시 선인장과 다른 식물들이 듬성듬성 자라고 있는 바위투성이의 건조한 곳에서 갑자기 해바라기 하나가 눈에 띄었습니다. 그것은 집에서 키우는 해바라기만큼 키가 크지는 않았지만 밝은 색깔은 마찬가지여서 기분이 아주 좋아졌습니다.

거칠기만 한 곳에서 우연하게 좋은 것을 만나고 보니 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게도 삶이 얼마나 생기가 없고 황량하게 보일 수 있는지 생각하게 되었습니다. 어려움은 극복할 수 없을 것 같고, 시편 기자 다윗의 외침처럼 우리의 기도도 때로는 소용없는 것처럼 보이기도 합니다. “여호와여 나는 가난하고 궁핍하오니 주의 귀를 기울여 내게 응답하소서”(시편 86:1). 우리도 다윗처럼 기쁨을 갈망하는 존재들입니다(4절).

그러나 다윗은 이어서 주를 부르는 모든 사람들에게 인자함을 넘치게 베풀어주시는 하나님(5절), 신실하시고(11절) “긍휼히 여기시며 은혜를 베푸시는 하나님”(15절)을 섬긴다고 선언합니다. 하나님은 정말로 응답해 주십니다(7절).

때때로 하나님은 황량한 곳에 해바라기를 보내주십니다. 그것은 친구로부터의 격려의 말이나 글, 위로의 문장이나 성경구절, 혹은 아름다운 해돋이처럼 우리에게 희망을 가지고 더 가벼운 발걸음으로 앞으로 나가게 해주는 것들입니다. 우리를 어려움에서 건져주시는 하나님을 경험할 그 날을 기다릴 때에도 시편 기자처럼 “주는 위대하사 기이한 일들을 행하시오니 주만이 하나님이시니이다”(10절)라고 선언하는 우리가 될 수 있기를 소원합니다.

BRIGHT SPOTS IN BLEAK PLACES

When my husband and I were exploring a small, rugged corner of the state of Wyoming, I spied a sunflower in a rocky, dry place where sagebrush, nettles, prickly cactus, and other scraggly plants grew. It wasn’t as tall as the domestic sunflower, but it was just as bright—and I felt cheered.

This unexpected bright spot in rough terrain reminded me of how life, even for the believer in Jesus, can seem barren and cheerless. Troubles can seem insurmountable, and like the cries of the psalmist David, our prayers sometimes seem to go unheeded: “Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy” (PSALM 86:1). Like him, we too long for joy (V. 4).

But David goes on to declare that we serve a faithful (V. 11), “compassionate and gracious God” (V. 15), who abounds in love for all who call on Him (V. 5). He does answer (V. 7).

Sometimes in bleak places, God sends a sunflower—an encouraging word or note from a friend; a comforting verse or Bible passage; a beautiful sunrise—that helps us to move forward with a lighter step, with hope. Even as we await the day we experience God’s deliverance out of our difficulty, may we join the psalmist in proclaiming, “You are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God”! (V. 10). 하나님과 동역함

빌 애쉬는 1962년에 멕시코에 있는 한 고아원을 방문해서 풍차의 작은 펌프들을 고쳐주었습니다. 15 년 후 그는 어려운 마을에 깨끗한 물을 공급하는 것을 도와주는 일로 하나님을 섬기고 싶은 간절한 바람으로 비영리단체를 설립했습니다. 빌은 말했습니다. “하나님은 저를 일깨워 시골 빈민들에게 안전한 식수를 공급하려는 열망을 지닌 사람들을 찾아내어 ‘시간을 최대한 선용하라’고 하셨습니다.” 나중에 빌은 100개가 넘는 나라로부터 수많은 목사들과 복음전도자들을 통하여 전 세계적으로 안전한 식수가 필요하다는 것을 알게 되었고, 다른 사람들에게도 이 사역에 참여할 기회를 주었습니다.

WORKING WITH GOD

During his 1962 visit to Mexico, Bill Ashe helped fix windmill hand pumps at an orphanage. Fifteen years later, inspired by a deep desire to serve God by helping provide clean water to villages in need, Bill founded a nonprofit organization. He said, “God awoke me to ‘make the most of the time’ by finding others with a desire to bring safe drinking water to the rural poor.” Later, having learned about the global need for safe water through the requests of thousands of pastors and evangelists from more than 100 countries, Bill invited others to join the ministry’s efforts.

God welcomes us to team up to serve with Him and others in various ways. When the people of Corinth argued over which teachers they preferred, the apostle Paul affirmed his role as a servant of Jesus and a teammate of Apollos, fully dependent on God for spiritual growth (1 CORINTHIANS 3:1–7). He reminds us that all work has God-given value (V. 8). Acknowledging the privilege of working with others while serving Him, Paul encourages us to build each other up as He transforms us in love (V. 9).

Though our mighty Father doesn’t need our help to accomplish His great works, He equips us and invites us to partner with Him. XOCHITL DIXON

오직 믿음

삼백 명의 아이들이 옷을 차려 입고 앉아서 아침 식사를 주신 하나님께 감사의 기도를 드리고 있었습니다. 하지만 아이들 앞에는 아무런 음식이 없었습니다! 고아원을 운영하고 있는 선교사 조지 뮬러에게 이런 일은 자주 있는 일이었습니다. 그러나 이 상황은 하나님께서 어떻게 공급해 주시는지 알게 해주는 기회이기도 했습니다. 뮬러가 기도한지 몇 분 안 되어 간밤에 잠을 이루지 못한 제빵사가 고아원의 문을 두드렸습니다. 그는 고아원에 빵이 필요할 거라고 생각되어 세 바구니나 되는 빵을 간밤에 만들었던 것입니다. 조금 후에는 우유장수가 나타났습니다. 그의 손수레가 고아원 앞에서 고장 나는 바람에 우유가 상하는 것을 원치 않은 그는 뮬러에게 우유를 모두 주었습니다.

우리가 잘 지내는데 필요한 자원인 음식과 집, 건강, 재정, 친구들이 없을 때, 염려나 걱정, 자기 연민 등을 한바탕 치르는 것은 정상적인 일입니다. 그런데 열왕기상 17:8-16 말씀은 하나님의 도움이 “나는 떡이 없고 다만 통에 가루 한 움큼과 병에 기름 조금 뿐이라”(12절)고 말한 가난한 과부처럼, 전혀 예상하지 못한 방법으로 올 수 있다는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다. 그 이전에 엘리야에게 공급해준 것은 까마귀였습니다(4–6절). 우리는 부족한 것을 채우려고 염려함으로 여러 갈래로 길을 찾아 나설 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님께서 우리의 필요를 채워주시겠다고 약속하신 공급자시라는 것을 분명히 알면 자유로울 수 있습니다. 우리 스스로 해결책을 찾기 전에, 먼저 하나님을 찾는데 주의를 기울일 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그러면 시간과 힘을 절약할 수 있고 좌절하지 않을 수 있습니다.

ONLY TRUST

Three hundred children were dressed and seated for breakfast, and a prayer of thanks was offered for the food. But there was no food! Situations like this were not unusual for orphanage director and missionary George Mueller (1805–1898). Here was yet another opportunity to see how God would provide. Within minutes of Mueller’s prayer, a baker who couldn’t sleep the night before showed up at the door. Sensing that the orphanage could use the bread, he had made three batches. Not long afterward, the town milkman appeared. His cart had broken down in front of the orphanage. Not wanting the milk to spoil, he offered it to Mueller.

It’s normal to experience bouts of worry, anxiety, and self-pity when we lack resources essential to our well-being—food, shelter, health, finances, friendships. First Kings 17:8–16 reminds us that God’s help can come through unexpected sources like a needy widow. “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug” (V. 12). Earlier it was a raven that provided for Elijah (VV. 4–6). Concerns for our needs to be met can send us searching in many directions. A clear vision of God as the Provider who has promised to supply our needs can be liberating. Before we seek solutions, may we be careful to seek Him first. Doing so can save us time, energy, and frustration. ARTHUR JACKSON

RIVALS OR ALLIES?

The city of Texarkana sits squarely on the state border between Texas and Arkansas. The city of 70,000 inhabitants has two mayors, two city councils, and two police and fire departments. The cross-town sporting rivalry between high schools draws an uncommonly high attendance, reflecting the deep allegiance each has to their own state’s school. More significant challenges arise as well, such as disputes over the shared water system, governed by two sets of state laws. Yet the town is known for its unity despite the line that divides it. Residents gather annually for a dinner held on State Line Avenue to share a meal in celebration of their oneness as a community.

The believers in Corinth may not have drawn a line down their main thoroughfare, but they were divided. They’d been quarreling as a result of their allegiances to those who taught them about Jesus: Paul, Apollos, or Cephas (Peter). Paul called them all to oneness “in mind and thought” (1 CORINTHIANS 1:10), reminding them it was Christ who was crucified for them, not their spiritual leaders.

We behave similarly today, don’t we? We sometimes oppose even those who share our singularly important belief—Jesus’ sacrifice for our wrongdoings—making them rivals instead of allies. Just as Christ Himself is not divided, we, as His earthly representation—His body—mustn’t allow differences over nonessentials to divide us. Instead, may we celebrate our oneness in Him. REFINED IN THE FIRE

Twenty-four-karat gold is nearly 100 percent gold with few impurities. But that percentage is difficult to achieve. Refiners most commonly use one of two methods for the purification process. The Miller process is the quickest and least expensive, but the resulting gold is only about 99.95 percent pure. The Wohlwill process takes a little more time and costs more, but the gold produced is 99.99 percent pure.

In Bible times, refiners used fire as a gold purifier. Fire caused impurities to rise to the surface for easier removal. In his first letter to believers in Jesus throughout Asia Minor (northern Turkey), the apostle Peter used the gold-refining process as a metaphor for the way trials work in the life of a believer. At that time, many believers were being persecuted by the Romans for their faith in Christ. Peter knew what that was like firsthand. But persecution, Peter explained, brings out the “genuineness of [our] faith” (1 PETER 1:7).

Perhaps you feel like you’re in a refiner’s fire—feeling the heat of setbacks, illness, or other challenges. But hardship is often the process by which God purifies the gold of our faith. In our pain we might beg God to quickly end the process, but He knows what’s best for us, even when life hurts. Keep connected to the Savior, seeking His comfort and peace. LINDA WASHINGTON
