하나님은 이해하신다

이사한 지 얼마 안 되어 메이블의 7살짜리 아들 라이언이 새 학교의 여름 캠프를 준비하며 화를 내자, 메이블은 아이를 달래며 환경이 바뀌면 어려운 법이라고 말해주었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 아침, 라이언은 그 답지 않게 지나칠 정도로 투덜거렸습니다. 메이블은 걱정이 되어 물었습니다. “라이언, 뭐가 그렇게 힘들어?”

창문을 바라보다가 라이언은 어깨를 으쓱하며 말했습니다. “모르겠어요, 엄마. 그냥 마음이 너무 복잡해요.”

메이블은 아들을 위로하면서 마음이 아팠습니다. 어떻게 하면 아들을 도울 수 있을까 생각하다가 자기도 이사가 힘들었다고 이야기했습니다. 그리고 우리가 이해하지 못하고 불만을 말하지 못할 때에도 하나님은 모든 것을 아시고 곁에 계신다는 것을 라이언에게 확신시켜 주었습니다. 그러고는 “학교가 시작하기 전에 친구들을 찾아가 보자.”라고 했습니다. 그들은 같이 계획을 세우면서, 하나님은 그분의 자녀들이 “마음이 복잡할” 때에도 그것을 다 이해하고 계신다는 사실에 감사했습니다.

시편 147편의 저자는 믿음의 여정 속에서 주체할 수 없는 여러 감정을 경험했습니다. 또한 모든 것을 아시는 창조자이자 주관자 되시는 분, 몸과 마음의 상처를 치유하시는 분을 찬양하는 특권을 깨달았습니다(1-6절). 그는 베푸시고 “자기를 경외하는 자들과 그의 인자하심을 바라는 자들을 기뻐하시는”(11절) 하나님을 찬양했습니다.

우리의 감정을 이해하려고 몸부림칠 때 외로움을 느끼거나 낙담할 필요가 없습니다. 변치 않으시는 사랑의 하나님의 무한한 이해 안에서 우리는 안식할 수 있습니다.

GOD UNDERSTANDS

After a recent move, Mabel’s seven-year-old son, Ryan, fussed as he prepared to attend a summer camp at his new school. Mabel encouraged him, assuring him that she understood change was hard. But one morning, Ryan’s out-of-character grump- iness seemed excessive. With compassion, Mabel asked, “What’s bothering you, Son?”

Staring out of the window, Ryan shrugged. “I don’t know, Mom. I just have too many feelings.”

Mabel’s heart ached as she comforted him. Desperate for a way to help him, she shared that the move was hard for her too. She assured Ryan that God would stay close, that He knows everything, even when they couldn’t understand or voice their frustrations. “Let’s set up a visit with your friends before school starts,” she said. They made plans, grateful that God understands even when His children have “too many feelings.”

The writer of Psalm 147 experienced overwhelming emotions throughout his faith journey and recognized the benefits of prais- ing the all-knowing Maker and Sustainer of all, the Healer of physical and emotional wounds (VV. 1–6). He praised God for the ways He provides and “delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love” (V. 11).

When we’re struggling to make sense of our emotions, we don’t have to feel alone or discouraged. We can rest in the unlim- ited understanding of our unchanging, loving God. XOCHITL DIXON

자신 있게 말하라!

브리트니는 레스토랑 동료에게, “바로 저 남자분이에요! 저기 계세요!” 라고 외쳤습니다. 그가 지목한 사람은 그녀가 다른 곳에서 처음 만났던 멜빈이었습니다. 멜빈이 교회 잔디를 가꾸고 있을 때, 성령의 인도하심으로 창녀로 보이는 한 여인과 대화를 하게 되었습니다. 그 여인을 교회로 인도하려 하자 여인이 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 뭐 하는 사람인지 아세요? 아무도 나를 반기지 않을 거예요.” 멜빈은 여인에게 예수님의 사랑을 전하며 예수님의 능력이 그녀의 삶을 바꿀 수 있다고 확신을 주자 여인의 얼굴에 눈물이 흘렀습니다. 몇 주 지나 브리트니는 예수님의 능력으로 삶이 바뀐 산 증인이 되어 새로운 환경에서 일하게 되었습니다.

바울 사도는 성도들이 기도에 힘쓰도록 격려하는 뜻에서 두 가지를 요청했습니다. “또 하나님께서 전도의 문을 우리에게 열어 주셔서, 우리가 그리스도의 비밀을 말할 수 있도록, 우리를 위해서도 기도하여 주십시오. 나는 이 비밀을 전하는 일로 매여 있습니다. 그러니 내가 마땅히 해야 할 말로 이 비밀을 나타낼 수 있도록 기도해 주십시오”(골로새서 4:3-4, 새번역).

당신은 예수님을 담대하고 명확히 증거할 기회를 달라고 기도한 적이 있습니까? 참으로 바람직한 기도입니다! 그런 기도는 멜빈과 같은 믿음의 사람들이 예기치 않은 장소에서 예기치 않은 사람들에게 그분을 증거할 수 있게 해줍니다. 예수님을 위해 목소리를 내는 것이 불편할 수 있지만, 그 보상은 우리의 불편함을 충분히 보상해줄, 삶의 변화입니다.

SPEAK UP!

Brittany exclaimed to her coworker at the restaurant, “There’s that man! There’s that man!” She was referring to Melvin, who first encountered her under different circumstances. While he was tending to the lawn of his church, the Spirit prompted him to start a conversation with a woman who appeared to be a prostitute. Her reply when he invited her to church was: “Do you know what I do? They wouldn’t want me in there.” As Melvin told her about the love of Jesus and assured her of His power to change her life, tears streamed down her face. Now, some weeks later, Brittany was working in a new environment, living proof of the power of Jesus to change lives.

In the context of encouraging believers to be devoted to prayer, the apostle Paul made a twofold request: “Pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should” (COLOSSIANS 4:3–4).

Have you prayed for opportunities to speak boldly and clearly for Jesus? What a fitting prayer! Such prayers can lead believers, like Melvin, to speak about Him in unexpected places and to unexpected people. Speaking up for Jesus can seem uncomfort- able, but the rewards—changed lives—have a way of compensat- ing for our discomforts. ARTHUR JACKSON

말도 안 되는 두려움

논리적으로 말이 안 되지만, 석 달 사이에 부모님이 모두 돌아가신 후 나는 부모님이 나를 잊어버리실 거라는 두려움을 느꼈습니다. 물론 부모님은 더 이상 이 세상에 안 계셨지만, 그 생각으로 내게 커다란 불안감이 생겼습니다. 아직 나는 나이 어린 미혼이었고, 부모님 없이 어떻게 삶을 헤쳐가야 할지 막막했습니다. 정말로 완전 혼자가 된 것을 느끼며 나는 하나님을 찾았습니다.

어느 날 아침 나는 하나님께 나의 말도 안 되는 두려움과 그로 말미암은 슬픔을 말씀드렸습니다 (그분이 이미 다 알고 계셨겠지만). 그날 성경에서 읽은 말씀은 이사야 49장이었습니다. “여인이 어찌 그 젖 먹는 자식을 잊겠으며...... 혹시 잊을지라도 나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라”(15절). 하나님은 이사야를 통해 자신의 백성을 잊지 않으시며, 훗날 그분의 아들 예수님을 통해 그들을 회복시키실 것을 약속하시면서 그들을 안심시키셨습니다. 그 말씀은 내 마음에도 와 닿았습니다. 부모가 자식을 잊기는 드물겠지만 그래도 있을 수 있는 일입니다. 하지만 하나님은 절대 잊지 않으십니다. 그분은 “내가 너를 손바닥에 새겼다”고 말씀하셨습니다.

하나님의 응답은 내게 더 큰 두려움을 가져다줄 수도 있었습니다. 하지만 그분이 나를 친히 기억하여 내게 주신 평안함은 바로 내게 가장 필요한 것이었습니다. 그때 나는 내 부모님이나 다른 누구보다도 하나님이 더 가까운 분이라는 것과, 하나님이 우리의 모든 것, 심지어 말도 안 되는 두려움조차 도와주실 수 있는 분임을 깨닫기 시작했습니다.

IRRATIONAL FEARS

It makes no logical sense, but when my parents died within a three-month period, I feared they would forget me. Of course they were no longer on earth, but that left me with a large uncertainty. I was a young, unmarried adult and wondered how to navigate life without them. Feeling really single and alone, I sought God.

One morning I told Him about my irrational fear and the sad- ness it brought (even though He knew it already). The Scripture passage that came from the devotional I read that day was Isaiah 49: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast . . . ? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” (V. 15). God reassured His people through Isaiah that He had not forgotten them and later promised to restore them to Himself through sending His Son Jesus. But the words ministered to my heart too. It’s rare for a mother or a father to forget their child, yet it’s possible. But God? No way. “I have engraved you on the palms of my hands,” He said.

God’s answer to me could have brought more fear. But the peace He gave because of His own remembrance of me was exactly what I needed. It was the start of discovering that God is even closer than a parent or anyone else, and He knows the way to help us with everything—even our irrational fears.  ANNE CETAS

속삭이는 회랑

런던의 성 바오로 대성당을 방문하여 259개의 계단을 올라가 꼭대기의 둥근 천정에 가보면 ‘속삭이는 회랑’이라는 곳이 있습니다. 거기서 작은 목소리로 속삭이면 원형 모양의 길을 따라 어디서든 다른 사람이 들을 수 있고, 심지어 거의 백 피트(약 30미터)나 되는 엄청난 공간을 가로질러 그 소리가 전해질 수 있습니다. 공학자들은 이 이상한 현상이 둥근 형태의 지붕과 강도 낮은 음파인 속삭임이 만나 생겨난 결과라고 설명합니다.

하나님이 고뇌에 찬 우리의 속삭임을 들으시기를 우리가 얼마나 바라는지요! 시편에는 하나님이 우리의 절규와 기도, 속삭임을 들으신다는 증언들로 가득합니다. 다윗은 “내가 환난 중에서 여호와께 아뢰며 나의 하나님께 부르짖었더니”(시편 18:6)라고 쓰고 있습니다. 다윗과 다른 시편 기자들도 반복해서 “나의 기도(4:1), 나의 소리(5:3), 나의 탄식(102:20)을 들으소서”라고 간구했습니다. 때로는 그 표현이 속삭임에 가깝습니다. “내 심령을 살피면서 자문해 볼”(77:6, 현대인의 성경) 때 “나에게 귀를 기울여 주십시오”(77:1, 새번역).

시편 기자들은 이 간구들에 대한 응답으로 하나님이 모든 간구를 듣고 계신다는 것을 보여줍니다. 다윗도 시편 18편 6절에서 이렇게 고백합니다. “그가 그의 성전에서 내 소리를 들으심이여 그의 앞에서 나의 부르짖음이 그의 귀에 들렸도다.” 실제 성전이 건축되기 이전이니 아마도 다윗은 하나님의 천국 처소에서 듣고 계신다는 의미로 기록했을 것입니다.

이 세상 너머 천국의 둥근 천정에 있는 “속삭이는 회랑”에서 하나님은 우리의 가장 깊은 신음과 우리의 “속삭임”까지 몸을 구부려 듣고 계십니다.

THE WHISPERING GALLERY

In the towering dome of London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, visitors can climb 259 steps to access The Whispering Gallery. There you can whisper and be heard by another person anywhere along the circular walkway, even across the enormous abyss nearly one hundred feet away. Engineers explain this anomaly as a result of the spherical shape of the dome and the low intensity sound waves of a whisper.

How we long to be confident that God hears our agonized whispers! The Psalms are filled with testimonies that He hears us—our cries, prayers, and whispers. David writes, “In my dis- tress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help” (PSALM 18:6). Over and over again, he and other psalmists plead, “Hear my prayer” (4:1), my voice (5:3), my groans (102:20). Sometimes the expression is more of a whispered, “Hear me” (77:1), where the “heart meditated and [the] spirit asked” (77:6).

In answer to these pleas, the psalmists—like David in Psalm 18:6—reveal that God is listening: “From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” Since the actual temple wasn’t yet built, might David have been referring to God listening in His heavenly dwelling?

From His very own “whispering gallery” in the dome of the heavens above the earth, God bends to our deepest murmurs, even our whispers . . . and listens. ELISA MORGAN

고통 함께하기

영국 왕립 해병대 참전용사였던 제임스 멕코넬은 2013년에 70세의 나이로 세상을 떠났습니다. 멕코넬은 가족이 없었고, 그가 있던 요양원 직원들은 장례식에 아무도 오지 않을까 걱정했습니다. 멕코넬의 장례식 집행을 맡게 된 한 남자가 페이스북에 이런 글을 올렸습니다. “요즘 같은 때에 죽음을 애도해줄 사람 한 명 없이 세상을 떠나는 것은 너무나 슬픈 일입니다. 이분은 우리 가족이었습니다...... 혹 장지에 오셔서 하나님의 품에 안긴 과거의 전우에게 경의를 표해 주실 수 있다면, 꼭 그렇게 해주시기를 부탁드립니다.” 그날 교회에서의 장례식에는 이백 명의 왕립 해병대원들이 자리를 가득 메웠습니다!

이 영국인 동포들은 우리가 서로 매여 있다는 성경의 진리를 몸소 보여주었습니다. 바울은 “몸은 한 지체뿐만 아니요 여럿이니”라고 말합니다 (고린도전서 12:14). 우리는 고립되어 있지 않으며, 오히려 예수님 안에서 묶여 있습니다. 다음 성경 말씀은 우리가 유기체처럼 서로 연결되어 있음을 보여줍니다. “만일 한 지체가 고통을 받으면 모든 지체가 함께 고통을 받고”(26절). 예수님을 믿어 하나님의 새로운 가족이 된 우리는 때로는 혼자서 감당하기에 두려운 고통이나 슬픔, 어두운 곳으로 향해야 할 때가 있습니다. 하지만 감사하게도 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다.

아마도 가장 힘든 고통은 우리가 어둠 속에 홀로 빠져 있다고 느낄 때일 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 고통을 함께 나눌 공동체, 곧 누구도 홀로 어둠 속에 남겨지지 않는 새로운 공동체를 만들어 주십니다.

SUFFERING TOGETHER

In 2013, seventy-year-old James McConnell, a British Royal Marine veteran, died. McConnell had no family, and staff from his nursing home feared no one would attend his funeral. A man tapped to officiate McConnell’s memorial service posted a Facebook message: “In this day and age it is tragic enough that anyone has to leave this world with no one to mourn their passing, but this man was family. . . . If you can make it to the graveside . . . to pay your respects to a former brother in arms, then please try to be there.” Two hundred Royal Marines packed the pews!

These British compatriots exhibited a biblical truth: we’re tied to one another. “The body is not made up of one part, but of many,” Paul says (1 CORINTHIANS 12:14). We’re not isolated. Just the opposite: we’re bound in Jesus. Scripture reveals organic inter- connection: “If one member suffers, all the members suffer” (V. 26 NASB). As believers in Jesus, members of God’s new family, we move toward one another into the pain, into the sorrow, into those murky places where we would fear to go alone. But thank- fully we do not go alone.

Perhaps the worst part of suffering is when we feel we’re drowning in the dark all by ourselves. God, however, creates a new community that suffers together. A new community where no one should be left in the dark. WINN COLLIER

종은 듣는 사람

만일 무선통신 라디오가 켜져 있었더라면 사람들은 타이타닉호가 침몰하는 상황을 알았을 것입니다. 다른 선박의 통신기사 시릴 에반스는 타이타닉호의 통신기사 잭 필립스에게 타이타닉호 앞에 빙원이 있다는 메시지를 전해주려고 애를 썼습니다. 하지만 승객들의 메시지를 전달하느라 바빴던 필립스는 에반스에게 무례한 태도로 조용히 하라고 하였습니다. 그래서 에반스는 마지못해 통신 라디오를 끄고 취침에 들어갔습니다. 십분 후, 타이타닉호는 빙산에 부딪혔습니다. 그 배는 조난신호를 보냈으나 듣는 사람이 없어 아무런 응답도 받지 못했습니다.

사무엘상을 읽어보면 이스라엘의 제사장들은 부패하여 영적 시력과 청력을 잃어버렸고 나라는 위험에 빠지게 되었습니다. “여호와의 말씀을 듣기가 매우 힘들었고 환상을 보는 일도 거의 없었습니다”(사무엘상 3:1, 현대인의 성경). 그럼에도 하나님은 자기 백성들을 포기하지 않으시고 제사장의 집에서 자라고 있던 사무엘이라는 어린 남자아이에게 말씀하시기 시작했습니다. 사무엘이라는 이름은 “여호와께서 들으신다”는 뜻인데, 하나님께서 사무엘의 어머니의 기도를 응답하신 것을 기리는 이름이었습니다. 하지만 사무엘은 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 법을 배워야 했습니다.

“말씀하옵소서 주의 종이 듣겠나이다”(10절). 종은 듣는 사람입니다. 우리도 성경에서 하나님이 드러내신 것들을 듣고 따를 수 있기를 기도합니다. 우리의 삶을 그분께 드리고, “통신 라디오”를 켜 놓은 겸손한 종의 자세를 취하도록 합시다.

THE SERVANT HEARS

Had the wireless radio been on, they would have known the Titanic was sinking. Cyril Evans, the radio operator of another ship, had tried to relay a message to Jack Phillips, the radio operator on the Titanic—letting him know they had encountered an ice field. But Phillips was busy relaying passengers’ messages and rudely told Evans to be quiet. So Evans reluctantly turned off his radio and went to bed. Ten minutes later, the Titanic struck an iceberg. Their distress signals went unanswered because no one was listening.

In 1 Samuel we read that the priests of Israel were corrupt and had lost their spiritual sight and hearing as the nation drifted into danger. “The word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions” (1 SAMUEL 3:1). Yet God wouldn’t give up on His people. He began to speak to a young boy named Samuel who was being raised in the priest’s household. Samuel’s name means “the Lord hears”—a memorial to God’s answering his mother’s prayer. But Samuel would need to learn how to hear God.

“Speak, for your servant is listening” (V. 10). It’s the servant who hears. May we also choose to listen to and obey what God has revealed in the Scriptures. Let’s submit our lives to Him and take the posture of humble servants—those who have their “radios” turned on. GLENN PACKIAM

최근에 나는 제2차 세계대전 당시 아버지가 어머니에게 쓴 편지를 모아둔 것을 읽었습니다. 아버지는 북아프리카에 계셨고, 어머니는 웨스트 버지니아에 계셨습니다. 미 육군 소위였던 아버지는 적군이 보기에 민감한 정보가 유출되는 것을 막기 위해 군인들의 편지를 검열하는 임무를 맡았습니다. 그래서 어머니에게 보낸 아버지의 편지 봉투에 “존 브래넌 소위가 검열함”이라는 도장이 찍힌 것을 보니 다소 우스웠습니다. 실제로 아버지는 자신의 편지에서 몇 줄을 삭제하기도 했습니다!

자기 검열은 우리 모두에게 정말 좋은 생각입니다. 성경을 기록한 사람들도 여러 곳에서 우리 안을 천천히 잘 들여다보아 옳지 않은 것, 곧 하나님의 영광을 가리는 것들을 찾아내는 것이 중요하다고 하였습니다. 예를 들어 시편 기자는 “나를 살피사 내 마음을 아시며...... 내게 무슨 악한 행위가 있나 보시고”(시편 139:23-24)라고 기도합니다. 예레미야는 “우리가 스스로 우리의 행위를 조사하고 여호와께로 돌아가자”(예레미야애가 3:40)고 썼습니다. 그리고 바울도 성찬 때의 우리 마음가짐에 대해 말하면서, “각 사람은 자기를 살펴야 합니다”(고린도전서 11:28, 새번역)라고 말했습니다.

성령님은 우리가 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 않는 태도나 행동에서 돌아 서도록 도와주십니다. 그러므로 오늘 세상으로 나가기 전, 잠시 자기 성찰을 위해 성령님의 도우심을 구함으로써 주님과 교제하며 “주님께로 돌이킬” 수 있도록 합시다.

SELF-CHECKING

Recently I read through a stack of World War II-era letters my dad sent to my mother. He was in North Africa and she was in West Virginia. Dad, a second lieutenant in the US Army, was tasked with censoring soldiers’ letters—keeping sensitive information from enemy eyes. So it was rather humorous to see—on the outside of his letters to his wife—a stamp that said, “Censored by 2nd Lt. John Branon.” Indeed, he had cut out lines from his own letters!

Self-censoring is really a good idea for all of us. Several times in Scripture, the writers mention the importance of taking a good long look at ourselves to find what’s not right—not God-honoring. The psalmist, for example, prayed, “Search me, God, and know my heart . . . . See if there is any offensive way in me” (PSALM 139:23–24). Jeremiah put it like this: “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” (LAMENTATIONS 3:40). And Paul, speaking of our heart condition at the time of communion, said, “Everyone ought to examine themselves” (1 CORINTHIANS 11:28).

The Holy Spirit can help us turn from any attitudes or actions that don’t please God. So before we head out into the world today, let’s stop and seek the Spirit’s help in doing some self-checking so we can “return to the Lord” in fellowship with Him. DAVE BRANON

최고의 파도타기

사람들은 “파도타기”를 좋아합니다. 세계 어디서든 스포츠 행사나 콘서트에서 파도타기는 몇 사람이 자리에서 일어나 손을 들면서 시작됩니다. 이어서 그들 옆에 앉은 사람들이 같은 동작을 합니다. 목표는 하나의 연속 동작이 경기장 전체로 흐르듯 이어지게 하는 것입니다. 맨 마지막에 이르면 처음에 파도타기를 시작했던 사람들이 웃으며 환호성을 울리면서 그 동작을 계속 이어서 합니다.

파도타기가 처음 기록된 것은 1981년 오클랜드 아틀레틱스와 뉴욕 양키스 간의 프로야구 경기에서였습니다. 나는 재미로 이 파도타기에 참여하는 것을 좋아합니다. 그러나 한편, 파도타기를 하면서 느끼는 행복과 유대감이 어느 곳에 있든 모든 신자들을 찬양과 소망으로 하나 되게 하는 예수님의 구원의 기쁜 소식, 곧 복음과 비슷하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 이 “최고의 파도타기”는 이천 년 전 예루살렘에서 시작되었습니다. 이 이야기를 바울은 골로새교회의 성도에게 보내는 글에서 이렇게 썼습니다. “이 복음이 이미 너희에게 이르매 너희가 듣고 참으로 하나님의 은혜를 깨달은 날부터 너희 중에서와 같이 또한 온 천하에서도 열매를 맺어 자라는도다”(골로새서 1:6). 이 기쁜 소식의 자연스런 결과는 “[우리를] 위하여 하늘에 쌓아 둔 소망으로 말미암은 믿음과 사랑”입니다(5절).

예수님을 믿는 우리는 역사상 가장 커다란 파도타기에 참여한 사람들 입니다. 계속 파도타기를 하십시오! 이 파도가 끝날 때에 우리는 이 모든 일을 시작하신 그분의 미소를 보게 될 것입니다.

THE ULTIMATE WAVE

People love doing “the wave.” At sporting events and concerts around the world, it begins when a few people stand and raise their hands. A moment later, those seated beside them do the same. The goal is to have one sequential flowing movement work its way around an entire stadium. Once it reaches the end, those who started it smile and cheer—and keep the movement going.

The first recorded incident of the wave occurred at a professional baseball game between the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees in 1981. I love joining in the wave because it’s fun. But it’s also occurred to me that the happiness and togetherness we experience while doing it is reminiscent of the gospel—the good news of salvation in Jesus that unites believers everywhere in praise and hope. This “ultimate wave” started over twenty centuries ago in Jerusalem. Writing to the members of the church in Colossae, Paul described it this way: “The gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it” (COLOSSIANS 1:6). The natural result of this good news is “faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for [us] in heaven” (V. 5).

As believers in Jesus, we’re part of the greatest wave in history. Keep it going! Once it’s done, we’ll see the smile of the One who started it all. JAMES BANKS

우리의 구원자 하나님

넓은 바다에서 한 구조대원이 철인 삼종경기 중 당황하여 난관에 빠진 수영선수들을 돕기 위해 카약을 타고 나섰습니다. 그 여자 구조요원은 카약의 가운데를 잡으면 배가 뒤집히는 것을 알고, “배 가운데 부분을 잡지 마세요!”라고 수영선수들에게 소리쳤습니다. 그 대신 그녀는 힘이 빠진 수영선수들을 카약의 앞머리 쪽으로 가라고 했습니다. 거기서 고리를 잡으면 이 카약 안전요원이 그들을 구조해주었습니다.

삶이, 그리고 사람들이 우리를 끌어내리려 하는 위험 앞에서 예수님을 믿는 우리에게는 구원자가 계심을 압니다. “주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 나 곧 내가 내 양을 찾고...... 그 흩어진 모든 곳에서 그것들을 건져낼지라” (에스겔 34:11-12).

이것은 이스라엘 백성이 유배 중에 에스겔 선지자가 준 확신이었습니다. 이스라엘 지도자들은 백성들을 무시하고 착취하고 삶을 약탈하며 “자기만 먹이고 [하나님의] 양 떼를 먹이지 아니하였습니다”(8절). 그 결과 사람들은 “온 지면에 흩어졌으되 찾고 찾는 자가 없었습니다”(6절).

그러나 주님은 “내가 내 양을......건져내겠다”고 선언하셨습니다(10절). 그리고 그분의 약속은 지금도 유효합니다.

우리는 무엇을 해야 할까요? 전능하신 하나님과 그분의 약속을 견고히 붙잡으십시오. 하나님은 “나 곧 내가 내 양을 찾고 찾으리라”(11절)고 말씀하십니다. 그것은 단단히 붙잡을 가치가 있는 구원의 약속입니다.

GOD OUR RESCUER

In the open sea, a rescuer positioned her kayak to assist panicked swimmers competing in a triathlon. “Don’t grab the middle of the boat!” she called to swimmers, knowing such a move would capsize her craft. Instead, she directed weary swimmers to the bow, or front, of the kayak. There they could grab a loop, allowing the safety kayaker to help rescue them.

Whenever life or people threaten to pull us under, as believers in Jesus, we know we have a Rescuer. “For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep . . . . I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered” (EZEKIEL 34:11–12).

This was the prophet Ezekiel’s assurance to God’s people when they were in exile. Their leaders had neglected and exploited them, plundering their lives and caring “for themselves rather than for [God’s] flock” (V. 8). As a result, the people “were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them” (V. 6).

But “I will rescue my flock,” declared the Lord (V. 10), and His promise still holds.

What do we need to do? Hold fast to almighty God and His promises. “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them,” He says (V. 11). That’s a saving promise worth holding tightly. PATRICIA RAYBON

약한 자를 구원하라

스위스에서 스키 휴가를 보내는 것과 프라하에서 위험에 처한 아이들을 구하는 것 중 당신은 어떤 것을 선택하시겠습니까? 한 평범한 사람이었던 니콜라스 윈튼은 후자를 선택했습니다. 1938년 체코슬로바키아와 독일 간의 전쟁이 임박한 때였습니다. 니콜라스는 많은 유대인들이 끔찍한 환경에서 살고 있던 프라하의 난민 캠프를 방문한 후 그들을 돕는 계획을 마련해야겠다는 생각이 강하게 들었습니다. 그는 기금을 모아 제2차 세계대전이 발발하기 전 수백 명의 어린이들을 프라하에서 영국으로 안전하게 이주시켜 영국의 가정에서 돌봄을 받게 했습니다.

RESCUE THE WEAK

Which would you choose—a skiing holiday in Switzerland or rescuing children from danger in Prague? Nicholas Winton, just an ordinary man, chose the latter. In 1938, war between Czechoslovakia and Germany seemed on the horizon. After Nicholas visited refugee camps in Prague, where many Jewish citizens lived in horrible conditions, he felt compelled to come up with a plan to help. He raised money to transport hundreds of children safely out of Prague to Great Britain to be cared for by British families before the onset of World War II.

His actions exemplified those called for in Psalm 82: “Uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed” (V. 3). Asaph, the writer of this psalm, wanted to stir his people to champion the cause of those in need: “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (V. 4). Like the children Nicholas worked tirelessly to rescue, the psalmist spoke for those who couldn’t speak for themselves—the poor and the widowed who needed justice and protection.

Everywhere we look today we see people in need due to war, storms, and other hardships. Although we can’t solve every problem, we can prayerfully consider what we can do to help in the situations God brings into our lives. LINDA WASHINGTON
