직장에서의 긍휼

친구 엘렌은 회계법인에서 급여 계산을 담당합니다. 이 일은 간단한 작업처럼 들리지만, 고용주들이 필요한 정보를 제 시간에 보내오지 못하는 경우가 있으면 엘렌은 이 늦어진 시간을 만회하기 위해 종종 초과 근무를 하면서 직원들이 제 때에 급여를 받을 수 있도록 합니다. 그 급여를 받아서 식품과 약을 구입하고 집세를 내야 하는 직원들을 생각하여 그렇게 하는 것입니다.

엘렌의 연민 어린 일처리는 예수님을 생각나게 해줍니다. 주님은 이 세상에 계실 때 상황이 여의치 않을 때도 사람들을 돌보셨습니다. 예를 들면, 세례 요한의 처형 소식을 듣고 예수님은 혼자만의 시간을 갖기 위해 외딴 곳을 찾아가려고 배에 올랐습니다(마태복음 14:13). 주님도 그의 친척을 기리고 슬픔 속에서 기도할 시간이 필요하셨을 것입니다.

그런데 한 가지 문제가 발생했습니다. 사람들의 무리가 예수님을 뒤따랐던 것입니다. 이들은 육신적으로 여러 다양한 도움이 필요한 사람들이었습니다. 사람들을 돌려보내면 그만이었겠지만 “배에서 내린 예수님은 많은 군중을 보시고 불쌍히 여겨 병자들을 고쳐주셨습니다”(14 절, 현대인의 성경).

예수님이 이 땅에서 사역하실 때 사람들을 가르치고 병을 고치시는 것이 주님의 소명의 일부이기는 했지만, 사람들을 긍휼히 여기시는 주님의 마음은 그분이 사명을 수행하는 방식에도 영향을 미쳤습니다. 하나님께서 우리가 살면서 하나님의 긍휼을 깨닫고 다른 이들에게도 그것을 전할 힘을 주시기를 소원합니다.

COMPASSION ON THE JOB

My friend Ellen calculates payroll for an accounting firm. This may sound like a straightforward job, but there are times when employers submit their information later than requested. Ellen often makes up for this by working long hours so employees can receive their money without delay. She does this out of consideration for the families that depend on those funds to buy groceries, purchase medicine, and pay for housing.

Ellen’s compassionate approach to her job points me to Jesus. On earth, He sometimes ministered to people when it was inconvenient for Him. For instance, Christ wanted some alone time after He heard that John the Baptist had been killed, so He boarded a boat in search of an isolated place (MATTHEW 14:13). Perhaps He needed to grieve for His relative and pray through His sorrow.

There was just one problem. Crowds of people tagged along behind Him. This group had various physical needs. It would have been much easier to send the people away, but “when Jesus landed and saw [them], he had compassion on them and healed their sick” (V. 14).

Although it was part of Jesus’ calling to teach people and cure their diseases as He ministered on earth, His empathy affected the way in which He carried out His responsibilities. May God help us to recognize His compassion in our lives and give us the strength to pass it on to others. JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

작별과 만남

내 동생 데이비드가 심장마비로 갑작스럽게 죽자 삶에 대한 내 관점이 극적으로 바뀌었습니다. 그는 일곱 형제 중 넷째였지만 우리들 중 제일 먼저 세상을 떠났습니다. 그리고 예상치 못했던 그 죽음으로 나는 깊은 생각에 잠기게 되었습니다. 나이가 들어갈수록 우리 가족의 미래에는 얻는 일보다는 잃는 일이 더 많아질 것이라는 사실이 명백해졌습니다. 만남보다 이별이 더 많게 될 것이었습니다.

생각해 보면 이것은 결코 놀랄 일은 아닙니다. 인생이라는 것이 원래 그런 것이기 때문입니다. 하지만 이것을 새삼 깨닫게 되자 머릿속에서 감성의 번뜩임이 일어났습니다. 삶의 모든 순간에, 시간이 허락하는 모든 기회에 신선하고 새로운 의미를 부여하게 된 것입니다. 또한 다시는 헤어질 필요가 없는, 미래에 있을 재회라는 현실이 엄청난 새로운 가치로 다가왔습니다.

이 궁극적인 현실이 요한계시록 21:3-4의 요점입니다. “하나님은 친히 그들과 함께 계셔서 모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라.”

오늘날 우리는 긴 작별의 시간들을 보내고 있지만, 그리스도의 죽음과 부활을 믿는 우리는 영원히 다시 만날 것도 믿습니다.

GOODBYES AND HELLOS

W hen my brother David suddenly died of cardiac failure, my perspectives on life changed dramatically. Dave was the fourth of seven children, but he was the first of us to pass—and the unexpected nature of that passing gave me much to ponder. It became apparent that as age began to catch up with us our family’s future was going to be marked more by loss than by gain. It was going to be characterized as much by goodbyes as hellos.

None of this was a surprise intellectually—that is just how life works. But this realization was an emotional lightning bolt to the brain. It gave a fresh, new significance to every moment life gives us and every opportunity time allows. And it placed a huge new value on the reality of a future reunion, where no goodbyes will ever be needed.

This ultimate reality is at the heart of what we find in Revelation 21:3–4: “God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Though today we may find ourselves experiencing seasons of long goodbyes, our trust in Christ’s death and resurrection promises an eternity of hellos. BILL CROWDER

한 해양 생물학자가 남태평양의 쿡 아일랜드 근처에서 수영을 하고 있는데 5만 파운드(약 2만 3천 킬로그램)의 혹등고래가 갑자기 나타나 그를 지느러미 밑으로 밀어 넣었습니다. 순간 그 여인은 이제 죽었다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 천천히 원을 그리며 수영을 한 후에 고래는 그녀를 놓아주었습니다. 바로 그때 범상어가 그 근처를 떠나는 것이 보였습니다. 그 여인은 고래가 위험으로부터 자신을 보호해 주었다고 믿습니다.

이 위험한 세상에서, 우리는 다른 사람들을 돌보라는 소명을 받았습니다. 하지만 우리는 ‘내가 정말 다른 사람을 책임져야 해?’라고 자문할 수 있습니다. 또는 가인과 같이, “내가 내 아우를 지키는 자니이까”(창세기 4:9)라고 물을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 구약성경의 나머지 부분은 강한 어조로 이 질문에 ‘그렇다!’라고 대답합니다. 아담이 동산을 돌봐야 했던 것 같이, 가인도 아벨을 돌봐야 했습니다. 이스라엘도 연약한 자들을 보호하고 가난한 사람들을 돌봐야 했습니다. 그러나 그들은 정반대로 했습니다. 사람들을 착취하고, 가난한 자들을 억압하고, 이웃을 자신처럼 사랑하라는 소명을 저버렸습니다(이사야 3:14-15).

FRIENDLY FIN

A marine biologist was swimming near the Cook Islands in the South Pacific when a 50,000-pound humpback whale suddenly appeared and tucked her under its fin. The woman thought her life was over. But after swimming slowly in circles, the whale let her go. It’s then that the biologist saw a tiger shark leaving the area. The woman believes the whale had been protecting her—keeping her from danger.

In a world of danger, we’re called to watch out for others. But you might ask yourself, Should I really be expected to be responsible for someone else? Or in Cain’s words: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (GENESIS 4:9). The rest of the Old Testament resounds with the thunderous response: Yes! Just as Adam was to care for the garden, so Cain was to care for Abel. Israel was to keep watch over the vulnerable and care for the needy. Yet they did the opposite— exploiting the people, oppressing the poor, and abdicating the calling to love their neighbors as themselves (ISAIAH 3:14–15).

Yet, in the Cain and Abel story, God continued to watch over Cain, even after he was sent away (GENESIS 4:15–16). God did for Cain what Cain should have done for Abel. It’s a beautiful foreshadow- ing of what God in Jesus would come to do for us. Jesus keeps us in His care, and He empowers us to go and do likewise for others.

격려의 날

재난이 일어날 때 긴급구조요원들은 최전선에서 헌신과 용기를 보여줍니다. 2001년 뉴욕의 세계무역센터가 공격을 받아 수천 명의 사람들이 사망하거나 부상을 당했을 때, 400 명 이상의 긴급구조 요원들도 목숨을 잃었습니다. 이 긴급구조요원들을 기리기 위해 미 상원은 9월 12일을 ‘국가 격려의 날’로 지정하였습니다.

정부가 국가 격려의 날을 선포하는 것이 특이해 보일지 모르지만, 바울 사도 또한 이것이 교회의 성장에 필요하다고 확신하였습니다. 그는 마케도니아의 도시 데살로니가에 새로 생겨난 교회에게 “마음이 약한 자들을 격려하고 힘이 없는 자들을 붙들어주며 모든 사람들에게 오래 참으라”(데살로니가전서 5:14)고 권면하였습니다. 비록 그들이 박해를 받고 있었지만, 바울은 그들에게 “서로 대하든지 모든 사람을 대하든지 항상 선을 따르라”(15절)고 격려하였습니다. 바울은 그들이 인간으로서 절망과 이기심과 갈등을 일으키기 쉽다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 또한 그들이 하나님의 도우심과 능력 없이는 서로를 격려할 수 없다는 것도 알고 있었습니다.

DAY OF ENCOURAGEMENT

F irst responders show dedication and courage daily by being on the front lines when disasters occur. In the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City in 2001 when thou- sands of people were killed or injured, more than four hundred emergency workers also lost their lives. In honor of first responders, the US Senate designated September 12 as the National Day of Encouragement.

While it may seem unique that a government would declare a national day of encouragement, the apostle Paul certainly thought this was needed for the growth of a church. He com- mended the young church in Thessalonica, a city in Macedonia, to “encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:14). Although they were going through persecution, Paul encouraged the believers to “always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else” (V. 15). He knew that as humans, they would be prone to despair, selfishness, and conflict. But he also knew they would not be able to uplift one another without God’s help and strength.

Things are no different today. We all need to be uplifted, and we need to do the same for those around us. Yet we can’t do it in our own strength. That’s why Paul’s encouragement that “the one who calls you [Jesus] is faithful, and he will do it” is so reassuring (V. 24). With His help, we can encourage one another every day.

광야의 불꽃

1800년대 후반 어느 날 짐 화이트가 치후아한 사막에서 말을 타고 가고 있을 때, 마치 구름 같은 이상한 연기가 하늘로 치솟아 올라가는 것을 보았습니다. 그 젊은 카우보이는 들불이 아닌가 의심하여 연기가 나는 쪽으로 달려가 보니, “연기”라고 생각했던 것이 실은 땅에 있는 구멍에서 솟구쳐 나오는 엄청난 박쥐 떼라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 화이트는 생각지도 않게 뉴멕시코 주의 웅대하고 엄청난 카알스배드 동굴을 발견하게 된 것입니다.

모세가 미디안 광야에서 양떼를 치고 있을 때, 그 역시 불붙은 떨기나무가 타지 않는 이상한 광경을 보게 되었습니다(출애굽기 3:2). 하나님께서 몸소 떨기나무에서 말씀하실 때, 모세는 처음에 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 더 큰 무엇인가를 접하고 있음을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 하나님은 모세에게 “나는 네 조상의 하나님, 곧 아브라함의 하나님이니라”(6절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 노예가 된 백성들을 해방시키시고, 그들의 참 모습은 하나님의 자녀라는 것을 그들에게 보여주려고 하셨던 것입니다(10절).

그보다 600년도 훨씬 이전에, 하나님은 아브라함에게 “땅의 모든 족속이 너로 말미암아 복을 얻을 것이라”(창세기 12:3)는 약속을 해주셨습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 애굽으로부터 탈출하는 것은 그 복의 첫 단계로, 아브라함의 자손이신 메시아를 통해 그분의 피조물들을 구원하시려는 하나님의 계획의 첫 단계였습니다.

하나님은 이 구원을 모든 사람에게 베푸시기 때문에, 오늘날 우리도 그 축복의 혜택을 누리고 있습니다. 그리스도는 온 세상의 죄를 위해 오셔서 죽으셨습니다. 주님을 믿는 믿음으로 우리 역시 살아 계신 하나님의 자녀가 됩니다.

FIRE IN THE DESERT

While riding in the Chihuahuan Desert in the late 1800s, Jim White spotted a strange cloud of smoke spiraling skyward. Suspecting a wildfire, the young cowboy rode toward the source, only to learn that the “smoke” was a vast swarm of bats spilling from a hole in the ground. White had come across New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns, an immense and spectacular system of caves.

As Moses was tending sheep in a Middle Eastern desert, he too saw an odd sight that grabbed his attention—a flaming bush that didn’t burn up (EXODUS 3:2). When God Himself spoke from the bush, Moses realized he had come to something far grander than it had first appeared. He told Moses, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham” (V. 6). God was about to lead an enslaved people to freedom and show them their true identity as His children (V. 10).

More than six hundred years earlier, God had made this prom- ise to Abraham: “All peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (GENESIS 12:3). The flight of the Israelites from Egypt was but one step in that blessing—God’s plan to rescue His creation through the Messiah, Abraham’s descendant.

Today we can enjoy the benefits of that blessing, for God offers this rescue to everyone. Christ came to die for the sins of the whole world. By faith in Him, we too become children of the living God. TIM GUSTAFSON

하나님을 위한 음악 만들기

합창단 감독인 아리안 아벨라는 어릴 때 손을 감추려고 손을 깔고 앉곤 했습니다. 그녀는 양손 모두 손가락이 없거나 서로 붙은 상태로 태어났고, 왼쪽 다리와 오른쪽 발가락도 없었습니다. 아벨라는 음악을 좋아하고 높은 음을 내는 소프라노였지만, 스미스 대학에서 행정을 전공할 생각이었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 합창단 교사가 아벨라에게 지휘를 해 달라고 부탁했는데, 그 일로 그녀의 손이 확연히 눈에 띄게 되었습니다. 그 때부터 아벨라는 자신이 할 일을 찾게 되어 교회 찬양대 지휘자로 활동했으며, 현재 다른 대학에서 합창단 감독으로 재직하고 있습니다. 아벨라는 “선생님께서 내 안에 있는 무언가를 보셨다.”고 말합니다.

이 감동적인 이야기는 우리 성도들에게 ‘우리의 영적 선생님이신 하나님은 우리 “한계”에 상관없이 우리 안에서 무엇을 보고 계실까?’ 라는 질문을 하게 합니다. 하나님은 무엇보다 우리에게서 그분 자신의 모습을 보고 계십니다. “하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고”(창세기 1:27).

그분의 영광스러운 “형상을 소유한 자”로서, 다른 사람들이 우리를 볼 때 우리는 그분의 모습을 나타내야 합니다. 아벨라에게 있어서 중요한 것은 그녀의 손이나 모자라는 손가락이 아니라 예수님이었습니다. 이것은 모든 성도들에게도 마찬가지입니다. 고린도후서 3장 18절은 “우리가 다 수건을 벗은 얼굴로 보는 것같이 주의 영광을 보매 그와 같은 형상으로 변화한다” 고 말합니다.

아벨라와 같이 우리도 하나님의 영광을 위해 울려 퍼지는 삶의 노래를 드리며, 그리스도의 변화시키는 능력(18절)으로 우리의 삶을 지휘할 수 있습니다.

MAKING HIS MUSIC

Choir director Arianne Abela spent her childhood sitting on her hands—to hide them. Born with fingers missing or fused together on both hands, she also had no left leg and was missing toes on her right foot. A music lover and lyric soprano, she’d planned to major in government at Smith College. But one day her choir teacher asked her to conduct the choir, which made her hands quite visible. From that moment, she found her career, going on to conduct church choirs and serving now as director of choirs at another university. “My teachers saw something in me,” Abela explains.

Her inspiring story invites believers to ask, What does God, our holy Teacher, see in us, regardless of our “limits”? More than anything, He sees Himself. “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (GENESIS 1:27 NLT).

As His glorious “image bearers,” when others see us, we should reflect Him. For Abela, that means Jesus, not her hands—or her lack of fingers—matters most. The same is true for all believers. “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image,” says 2 Corinthians 3:18.

Similar to Abela, we can conduct our lives by Christ’s trans- forming power (V. 18), offering a life song that rings out to the honor of God. PATRICIA RAYBON

1450년 요하네스 구텐베르크가 활자를 이용한 인쇄술을 개발함으로써 서구 사회에 대중매체 시대를 열어 새로운 사회 영역으로 배움을 확대시켰습니다. 세계적으로 글을 읽는 능력이 향상되었고, 새로운 사고를 통해 사회 및 종교 관련 분야에도 급속한 변화가 일어났습니다. 구텐베르크는 최초로 성경 인쇄본을 출판했는데, 그 이전에는 필사가들이 약 1년 간의 수작업으로 성경을 공들여 써야만 했습니다.

이 인쇄술 덕분에 그 후로 여러 세기 동안 우리는 쉽게 성경을 접할 수 있는 특권을 누리게 되었습니다. 지금은 디지털 버전의 성경도 있지만, 아직도 그의 발명의 산물인 인쇄된 성경책을 소지하고 있는 사람들이 많습니다. 성경 필사본을 만드는데 드는 엄청난 비용과 시간 때문에 한 때는 소유할 수 없었던 성경을 이제는 손쉽게 가질 수 있게 된 것입니다.

하나님의 진리를 지닐 수 있다는 것은 엄청난 특권입니다. 잠언서 저자는 말씀에서 얻은 그분의 교훈을 “[우리] 눈동자”(잠언 7:2) 같이 소중히 여기고, 그분의 지혜의 말씀을 “[우리] 마음판”(3절)에 새기라고 말합니다. 우리가 성경을 이해하고 성경의 지혜를 따라 살고자 하면, 우리도 마치 필사가들처럼 하나님의 진리를 “손가락”에서 마음속으로 새겨 넣어 어디를 가든 몸에 지닐 수 있게 됩니다.

PRINTED ON OUR HEARTS

W hen Johannes Gutenberg combined the printing press with moveable type in 1450, he ushered in the era of mass communications in the West, spreading learning into new social realms. Literacy increased across the globe and new ideas produced rapid transformations in social and religious contexts. Gutenberg produced the first-ever printed version of the Bible. Prior to this, Bibles were painstakingly hand-copied, taking scribes up to a year to produce.

For centuries since, the printing press has provided people like you and me the privilege of direct access to Scripture. While we also have electronic versions available to us, many of us often hold a physical Bible in our hands because of his invention. What was once inaccessible given the sheer cost and time to have a Bible copied is readily at our fingertips today.

Having access to God’s truth is an amazing privilege. The writer of Proverbs indicates we should treat His instructions to us in the Scriptures as something to be cherished, as “the apple of [our] eye” (PROVERBS 7:2) and to write His words of wisdom on “the tablet of [our] heart” (V. 3). As we seek to understand the Bible and live according to its wisdom, we, like scribes, are draw- ing God’s truth from our “fingers” down into our hearts, to be taken with us wherever we go. 기도로 다른 사람을 사랑하기

“사람들이 아직도 날 위해 기도하고 있나요?”

선교사는 아내가 자신을 만나러 교도소를 방문할 때마다 가장 먼저 이 질문을 했습니다. 그는 믿음 때문에 억울하게 기소되어 2 년째 감금 생활을 하고 있었습니다. 교도소 내의 환경과 적대감으로 그는 수시로 생명의 위험을 느꼈고, 그래서 전 세계의 성도들이 그를 위해 간절히 기도하고 있었습니다. 그는 하나님이 사람들의 기도를 강력하게 사용하신다고 믿었기 때문에 그들이 기도를 멈추지 않기를 확인하고 싶었던 것입니다.

다른 이들을 위한 기도, 특히 신앙으로 핍박 받는 이들을 위한 기도는 생명이 담긴 선물입니다. 바울은 선교여행 중 겪었던 자신의 고난에 대해 고린도 성도들에게 보낸 서신 속에서 이 점을 분명히 했습니다. 그는 “힘에 겹도록 심한 고난을 당하여 살 소망까지 끊어졌다”(고린도후서 1:8)고 했습니다. 그러나 그러고 나서 하나님께서 그를 건져 주셨다고 하면서, 하나님이 그렇게 하시는데 사용하신 도구에 대해 이렇게 설명했습니다. “앞으로도 건져 주시리라는 희망을 우리는 하나님께 두었습니다. 여러분도 기도로 우리에게 협력하여 주십시오.”(10-11절, 새번역).

LOVING OTHERS WITH OUR PRAYERS

“Are people still praying for me?”

That was one of the first questions a missionary asked his wife whenever she was allowed to visit him in prison. He had been falsely accused and incarcerated for his faith for two years. His life was frequently in danger because of the conditions and hos- tility in the prison, and believers around the world were earnestly praying for him. He wanted to be assured they wouldn’t stop, because he believed God was using their prayers in a powerful way.

Our prayers for others—especially those who are persecuted for their faith—are a vital gift. Paul made this clear when he wrote the believers in Corinth about hardships he faced during his mis- sionary journey. He “was under great pressure,” so much that he “despaired of life itself” (2 CORINTHIANS 1:8). But then he told them God had delivered him and described the tool He’d used to do it: “We have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers” (VV. 10–11, EMPHASIS ADDED).

God moves through our prayers to accomplish great good in the lives of His people. One of the best ways to love others is to pray for them, because through our prayers we open the door to the help only God can provide. When we pray for others, we love them in His strength. 지금, 그리고 다음

얼마 전 한 고등학교 졸업식에 참석했는데, 초청연사가 졸업을 앞둔 학생들에게 필요한 도전을 던져주었습니다. 그는 바로 지금이 그들의 삶에서 각자가 “다음은 뭐지?”라고 물어야 할 때라고 했습니다. 다음에 어떤 경력을 쌓을 것인지? 다음에 학교에 진학할 것인지 아니면 직장을 구할 것인지? 그러고 나서 그는 더 중요한 질문은 ‘지금 무엇을 하고 있는가’ 라는 것이라고 했습니다.

믿음의 여정이라는 면에서 볼 때, 그들은 자신을 위해서가 아닌 예수님을 위해 살기 위해 그들을 이끌어줄 어떤 결심을 매일 해야 할까요?

그의 졸업식 축사를 들으며 지금 어떻게 살아야 할지 여러 가지 지침이 들어있는 잠언서가 떠올랐습니다. 예를 들면, 정직을 실천하기, 지금(11:1), 좋은 친구를 골라 사귀기, 지금(12:26), 성실하게 살아가기, 지금(13:6), 올바르게 판단하기, 지금(13:15), 지혜롭게 말하기, 지금(14:3)과 같은 것들입니다.

성령님의 인도하심을 따라 지금 하나님을 위해 산다면 다음 단계에 대한 결정이 한결 쉬워집니다. “여호와는 지혜를 주시며......정직한 자를 위하여 완전한 지혜를 예비하시며......정의의 길을 보호하시며 그의 성도들의 길을 보전하려 하심이니라”(2:6-8). 하나님께서 우리가 지금 그분의 인도하심을 따라 사는데 필요한 것을 공급해 주시고, 그분의 영광을 위해 우리를 다음 단계로 이끌어주시기를 소원합니다.

NOW, THEN NEXT

I recently attended a high school graduation during which the speaker provided a needed challenge for the young adults awaiting their diplomas. He mentioned that this was a time in their lives when everyone was asking them, “What’s next?” What career would they be pursuing next? Where would they be going to school or working next? Then he said that the more important question was what were they doing now?

In the context of their faith journey, what daily decisions would they be making that would guide them to live for Jesus and not for themselves?

His words reminded me of the book of Proverbs, which makes many pointed statements about how to live—now. For instance: practicing honesty, now (11:1); choosing the right friends, now (12:26); living with integrity, now (13:6); having good judgment, now (13:15); speaking wisely, now (14:3).

Living for God now, by the leading of the Holy Spirit, makes the decisions about what is next much easier. “The Lord gives wisdom; . . . He holds success in store for the upright, . . . he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones” (2:6–8). May God supply what we need for us to live by His guidelines now, and may He guide us into what’s next for His honor. DAVE BRANON

반복되는 실패

전에 설교를 하던 시절, 어떤 주일 아침에는 내가 하찮은 벌레와도 같다는 느낌이 들곤 했습니다. 그런 느낌이 드는 주일의 주중 동안 나는 좋은 남편도, 좋은 아빠도, 좋은 친구도 아니었습니다. 나는 하나님이 나를 다시 사용하시기 전에 먼저 나 스스로 올바른 삶을 살아야만 한다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 일단 최선을 다해 설교하고, 다음 주에는 더 잘 살아보겠다고 다짐했습니다.

사실 그것은 바른 자세가 아니었습니다. 갈라디아서 3장을 보면 하나님은 끊임없이 우리에게 성령을 부어주시며, 우리가 어떤 일을 했거나 자격이 있어서가 아니라 거저 주시는 선물처럼 우리를 통해 강하게 역사하십니다.

아브라함의 삶이 그런 사실을 보여줍니다. 가끔 그는 남편으로서 실패했습니다. 예를 들면, 자신의 생명을 살리기 위해 거짓말을 하여 두 번이나 사라의 생명을 위험에 빠뜨렸습니다(창세기 12:10-20; 20:1-18). 그럼에도, 그가 하나님을 믿으니 “그것을 그에게 의로 정하셨다”(갈라디아서 3:6)고 했습니다. 아브라함은 실수를 저질렀지만 자신을 하나님의 손에 맡겼고, 하나님은 그를 사용하셔서 그의 혈통을 통해 세상의 구원을 이루셨습니다.

FAILED AGAIN

Back in my sermon-making days I approached some Sunday mornings feeling like a lowly worm. During the week before, I had not been the best husband, father, or friend. I felt that before God could use me again I had to establish a track record of right living. So I vowed to get through the sermon as best I could and try to live better the coming week.

That was not the right approach. In Galatians 3 it’s said that God continually supplies us with His Spirit and works powerfully through us as a free gift—not because we’ve done anything or deserve it.

Abraham’s life demonstrates this. At times he failed as a husband. For example, he twice put Sarah’s life in jeopardy by lying to save his own skin (GENESIS 12:10–20; 20:1–18). Yet his faith “was credited to him as righteousness” (GALATIANS 3:6). Abraham put himself in God’s hands despite his failures, and God used him to bring salvation to the world through his lineage.

There’s no justification for behaving badly. Jesus has asked us to follow Him in obedience, and He supplies the means to do so. A hard, unrepentant heart will always hinder His purposes for us, but His ability to use us doesn’t depend on a lengthy pattern of good behavior. It’s based solely on God’s willingness to work through us as we are: saved and growing by grace. You don’t have to work for His grace—it’s free. DAVID H. ROPER
