끝을 알고 시작하라

어린 시절에 “너는 이 다음에 커서 뭐가 되고 싶니?”라는 질문을 자주 받곤 했습니다. 그리고 그 대답들은 바람과 같이 자주 바뀌곤 했습니다. 의사, 소방관, 선교사, 예배 인도자, 물리학자, 아니 실제로는 맥가이버 같은 만능인! 이제 네 아이의 아버지인 나는 그 질문이 아이들에게 얼마나 어려울까 하는 생각이 듭니다. 간혹 나는 “네가 무엇을 아주 잘 할지 아빠는 알아!”라고 말해주고 싶을 때가 있습니다. 부모는 때때로 아이들이 자기 자신을 보는 것보다 더 많은 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

이는 바울이 그가 사랑하고 기도해준 빌립보 교인들(빌립보서 1:3)에게서 본 것과 비슷합니다. 그는 그 마지막을 알 수 있었습니다. 모든 것이 이루어질 때 그들이 어떻게 될지를 알았습니다. 성경은 그 이야기의 마지막 웅장한 광경인 부활과 만물이 새로워지는 것을 보여줍니다(고린도전서 15장과 요한계시록 21장 참조). 그리고 그 이야기를 누가 쓰고 있는지도 말해줍니다.

바울은 감옥에서 쓴 편지의 서두에서 빌립보 교회에 이렇게 상기시켜 주었습니다. “너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라”(빌립보서 1:6). 예수님이 그 일을 시작하셨고 그 일을 이루실 것입니다. ‘이루심’이라는 단어는 특별히 중요합니다. 그 이야기는 단순히 그냥 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 어느 것도 미완성으로 남겨두는 분이 아니시기 때문입니다.

BEGIN WITH THE END

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” I was often asked that question as a child. And the answers changed like the wind. A doctor. A firefighter. A missionary. A worship leader. A physicist—or actually, MacGyver! (a favorite TV character). Now, as a dad of four kids, I think of how difficult it must be for them to be asked that question. There are times when I want to say, “I know what you’ll be great at!” Parents can sometimes see more in their children than the children can see in themselves.

This resonates with what Paul saw in the Philippian believers—those he loved and prayed for (PHILIPPIANS 1:3). He could see the end; he knew what they’d be when all was said and done. The Bible gives us a grand vision of the end of the story—resurrection and the renewal of all things (SEE 1 CORINTHIANS 15 AND REVELATION 21). But it also tells us who’s writing the story.

Paul, in the opening lines of a letter he wrote from prison, reminded the Philippian church that “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (PHILIPPIANS 1:6). Jesus started the work and He’ll complete it. The word completion is particularly important—the story doesn’t just end, for God leaves nothing unfinished. - GLENN PACKIAM

기이한 위로

리사가 받은 카드에 적힌 성경 구절은 그녀의 지금 상황에 맞지 않는 것 같았습니다. “여호와께서 그 청년의 눈을 여시매 그가 보니 불말과 불병거가 산에 가득하여 엘리사를 둘렀더라”(열왕기하 6:17). ‘나는 암 환자인데! 아기도 얼마 전 잃었고! 그런데 하늘이 보낸 군사들 이야기는 뭐지.’ 리사는 이런 생각에 마음이 편치 않았습니다.

그러자 “천사들”이 나타나기 시작했습니다. 암을 겪어본 사람들이 시간을 내어 리사의 이야기를 들어주었습니다. 남편이 해외 파병 근무에서 일찍 돌아왔고, 친구들이 함께 기도해 주었습니다. 그러나 리사가 하나님의 사랑을 가장 크게 느낀 것은 친구 패티가 화장지 두 통을 들고 찾아왔을 때였습니다. 패티는 탁자 위에 티슈를 놓고는 울기 시작했습니다. 패티는 ‘알았습니다.’ 그녀 또한 유산의 아픔을 겪어본 사람이었습니다.

리사는 말합니다. “그것이 무엇보다도 의미가 컸어요. 그 카드가 이제 이해가 돼요. 나에게 보내준 ‘하늘의 군사들’이 계속 함께 있었던 거예요.”

군대가 이스라엘을 포위했을 때 글자 그대로 천사의 무리가 엘리사를 보호했습니다. 하지만 그 무리를 볼 수 없었던 엘리사의 사환은 “우리가 어찌하리이까?”하고 선지자에게 소리쳤습니다(15절). 엘리사는 단지 “여호와여 원하건대 그의 눈을 열어서 보게 하옵소서”(17절)라고 기도했습니다.

우리가 하나님을 바라볼 때, 위기를 통해 우리는 우리에게 진정으로 중요한 것이 무엇이며 우리가 혼자가 아니라는 것을 보게 됩니다. 우리는 위로를 주시는 하나님의 임재가 결코 우리를 떠나지 않음을 알게 됩니다. 하나님은 그의 사랑을 놀라운 방법들로 끝없이 우리에게 보여주십니다.

STRANGE COMFORT

The verse on the card Lisa received didn’t seem to match her situation: “Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 KINGS 6:17). I have cancer! she thought in confusion. I’ve just lost a baby! A verse about angel soldiers doesn’t apply.

Then the “angels” began to show up. Cancer survivors gave her their time and a listening ear. Her husband got released early from an overseas military assignment. Friends prayed with her. But the moment she most felt God’s love was when her friend Patty walked in with two boxes of tissues. Placing them on the table, she started crying. Patty knew. She’d endured miscarriages too.

“That meant more than anything,” Lisa says. “The card made sense now. My ‘angel soldiers’ had been there all along.”

When an army besieged Israel, a host of literal angels protected Elisha. But Elisha’s servant couldn’t see them. “What shall we do?” he cried to the prophet (V. 15). Elisha simply prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see” (V. 17).

When we look to God, our crisis will show us what truly matters and that we’re not alone. We learn that God’s comforting presence never leaves us. He shows us His love in infinitely surprising ways. - TIM GUSTAFSON

침입자 몰아내기

아직 새벽이 되기 전에 남편은 침대에서 일어나 부엌으로 갔습니다. 불이 켜졌다 꺼졌다 하는 것을 보며 나는 그가 무엇을 하는지 궁금했습니다. 그 순간 어제 아침에 부엌 조리대에 있는 ‘침입자’를 보고 내가 비명을 질렀던 일이 생각났습니다. 그것은 다리가 여섯 개 달린 달갑지 않은 생명체였습니다. 나의 편집증을 아는 남편은 그 벌레를 없애려고 오늘 아침 일찍 일어나 부엌에 벌레를 없애놓고서 내가 안심하고 들어가게 하려 했던 것입니다. 참 좋은 남편이지요!

남편은 자신보다 내 필요를 먼저 염두에 두고 잠에서 깼습니다. 그의 행동은 내게 에베소서 5장 25절에서 바울이 가르친 사랑을 보여줍니다. “남편들아 아내 사랑하기를 그리스도께서 교회를 사랑하시고 그 교회를 위하여 자신을 주심 같이 하라.” 바울은 계속 말합니다. “남편들도 자기 아내사랑하기를 자기 자신과 같이 할지니 자기 아내를 사랑하는 자는 자기를 사랑하는 것이라”(28절). 바울이 남편의 사랑을 그리스도의 사랑에 비교한 것은 예수님이 자신의 필요보다 우리의 필요를 우선하였다는 것에 근거합니다. 남편은 내가 어떤 침입자들을 무서워하는지를 알고 나의 염려를 그의 우선순위로 삼았던 것입니다.

이 원리는 남편들에게만 적용되는 것이 아닙니다. 예수님을 본받아 우리도 누군가가 이 세상에서 더 자유롭게 살아가도록 스트레스나 두려움, 수치, 걱정 등의 불청객을 물리치는 것을 돕는 사랑의 희생을 할 수 있습니다.

REMOVING THE INTRUDER

It wasn’t quite dawn when my husband rose from bed and went into the kitchen. I saw the light flip on and off and wondered at his action. Then I recalled that the previous morning I’d yelped at the sight of an “intruder” on our kitchen counter. Translated: an undesirable creature of the six-legged variety. My husband knew my paranoia and immediately arrived to remove it. This morning he’d risen early to ensure our kitchen was bug-free so I could enter without concern. What a guy!

My husband awoke with me on his mind, putting my needbefore his own. To me, his action illustrates the love Paul describes in Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Paul goes on, “Husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself” (V. 28). Paul’s comparison of a husband’s love to the love of Christ pivots on how Jesus put our needs before His own. My husband knows I’m afraid of certain intruders, and so he made my concern his priority.

That principle doesn’t apply to husbands only. After the example of Jesus, each of us can lovingly sacrifice to help remove an intruder of stress, fear, shame, or anxiety so that someone can move more freely in the world. - ELISA MORGAN

우리를 놓지 않으시는 주님

줄리오는 자전거를 타고 뉴욕 시와 뉴저지를 연결하는 분주한 조지 워싱턴 2층 대교를 건너다가 사람의 생사가 달린 상황에 맞닥뜨렸습니다. 한 남자가 허드슨 강이 보이는 다리 난간 위에 서서 뛰어내리려 하고 있었습니다. 경찰을 부를 시간이 없다는 것을 안 줄리오는 빠르게 움직였습니다. 그는 자전거에서 내려 팔을 뻗으며 이같이 말한 것을 기억합니다. “하지 마세요. 우리는 당신을 사랑합니다.” 그리고 굽은 막대기를 들고 양을 치는 목자처럼 제정신이 아닌 그 사람을 붙잡았습니다. 그리고 다른 행인의 도움으로 그를 안전한 곳으로 데려왔습니다. 보도에 따르면 줄리오는 그 사람을 안전한 곳으로 데려온 후에도 놓아주지 않으려 했다고 합니다.

2천 년 전, 생사의 갈림길에서 선한 목자이신 예수님은 자신의 목숨을 버려 그를 믿는 사람들을 구원하고 결코 내버려 두지 않을 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 주님은 그의 양들을 축복하시며, 양들이 주님을 개인적으로 알게 되고, 영생을 선물로 갖게 되며, 결코 멸망하지 않고, 주님의 보살핌 아래 안전할 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 안전은 연약하고 힘 없는 양의 능력이 아닌, 결코 그들을 “[주님의] 손에서” 빼앗을 자가 없다고 하신 목자이신 예수님의 능력에 달려있는 것입니다(요한복음 10:28-29).

HE WON’T LET US GO

Julio was biking across the George Washington Bridge—a busy, double-decked thoroughfare connecting New York City and New Jersey—when he encountered a life-or-death situation. A man was standing on a ledge over the Hudson River preparing to jump. Knowing that the police wouldn’t arrive in time, Julio acted quickly. He recalls getting off his bike and spreading out his arms, saying something like: “Don’t do it. We love you.” Then, like a shepherd with a crook, he grabbed the distraught man, and with the help of another passerby, brought him to safety. According to reports, Julio wouldn’t let go of the man, even after he was safe.

Two millennia earlier, in a life-or-death situation, Jesus, the Good Shepherd, said He would lay down His life to save and never let go of those who believed in Him. He summarized how He would bless His sheep: they would know Him personally, have the gift of eternal life, would never perish, and would be secure in His care. This security didn’t depend on the ability of the frail and feeble sheep, but on the sufficiency of the Shepherd who’ll never let one be snatched “out of [His] hand” (JOHN 10:28–29).

When we were distraught and feeling hopeless, Jesus rescued us; now we can feel safe and secure in our relationship with Him. He loves us, pursues us, finds us, saves us, and promises to never let us go. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

그리스도를 나타내는 법

리지외의 성녀 테레사는 겨우 네 살 때 어머니가 돌아가셨습니다. 그때까지 쾌활하고 걱정 없던 테레사는 점점 소심하고 자주 불안해하는 아이가 되어갔습니다. 그러다 여러 해가 지나 어느 크리스마스이브에 모든 것이 변했습니다. 다니던 교회에서 성탄 예배를 마친 테레사는 하나님이 자기를 두려움에서 해방시켜 기쁨을 주시는 것을 경험했습니다. 테레사는 그 변화가 하늘나라를 떠나 인간으로 오신 예수님을 그녀 안에 거하게 하시는 하나님의 능력 때문이라고 여겼습니다.

그리스도께서 우리 안에 거하신다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요? 바울은 그것을 하나의 신비한 영적 사건이라고 골로새 교회에 말했습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 “만세와 만대로부터 감추어졌던”(골로새서 1:26) 것을 이제 그의 성도들에게 드러내신 것입니다. 하나님은 그들에게 “이 비밀은 너희 안에 계신 그리스도시니 곧 영광의 소망”(27절)임을 알게 하셨습니다. 이와 같이 그리스도께서 골로새 성도들 안에 거하심으로 새로운 삶의 기쁨을 경험했습니다. 그들은 더 이상 죄된 자신의 옛 모습에 묶이지 않게 되었습니다.

HOW TO REFLECT CHRIST

Thérèse of Lisieux was a joyful and carefree child—until her mother died when she was just four years old. She became timid and easily agitated. But many years later on Christmas Eve, all of that changed. After celebrating the birth of Jesus with her church community, she experienced God releasing her from her fear and giving her joy. She attributed the change to the power of God leaving heaven and becoming a man, Jesus, and through His dwelling in her.

What does it mean for Christ to dwell within us? It’s a mystery, said Paul to the Colossian church. It’s one that God “kept hidden for ages and generations” (COLOSSIANS 1:26), but which He disclosed to God’s people. To them God revealed “the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (V. 27). Because Christ now dwelled in the Colossians, they experienced the joy of new life. No longer were they enslaved to the old self of sin.

If we’ve asked Jesus to be our Savior, we too live out this mystery of His dwelling in us. Through His Spirit, He can release us from fear, as He did Thérèse, and grow within us the fruit of His Spirit, such as joy, peace, and self-control (GALATIANS 5:22–23). Let’s give thanks for the wonderful mystery of Christ within us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

사랑 가운데 뿌리를 내림

“그것만 있으면 돼!” 메건이 말했습니다. 그녀는 제라늄에서 자른 줄기 끝에 꿀을 찍은 다음 퇴비가 채워진 화분에 심었습니다. 나는 메건에게 제라늄의 번식 방법을 배우고 있었습니다. 건강한 하나의 초목을 여러 개로 만들어, 꽃을 다른 사람들에게 나누어줄 수 있게 말입니다. 메건은 꿀이 어린 식물이 뿌리를 내리는 데 도움을 준다고 말했습니다.

메건이 일하는 모습을 보면서, 어떤 것들이 우리의 영적인 뿌리를 내리는 데 도움이 되는지 생각해 보았습니다. 무엇이 우리가 강하고 번성하는 믿음의 사람으로 성숙하도록 도와줄까요? 무엇이 우리가 시들거나 성장하지 못하게 되지 않도록 지켜줄까요? 바울은 에베소 사람들에게 쓴 편지에서 우리는 “사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어진다”(에베소서 3:17)고 말합니다. 이 사랑은 성령을 우리에게 주셔서 우리를 강하게 하시는 하나님으로부터 옵니다. 그리스도께서 우리 마음속에 거하십니다. 우리가 “그리스도의 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠한지를 깨닫기”(18절, 새번역) 시작할 때, 우리는 “하나님의 온갖 충만하심으로 충만해”(19절, 새번역)지면서 하나님의 임재를 그득히 경험할 수 있습니다.

영적으로 성장하려면 “우리가 구하거나 생각하는 모든 것에 더 넘치도록” (20절) 하시는 하나님의 사랑을 받고 있다는 사실을 묵상하면서 그 사랑 안에 뿌리를 내려야 합니다. 이것은 우리의 믿음을 위한 아주 놀라운 기반이 아닐 수 없습니다!

ROOTED IN LOVE

“That’s all it takes!” Megan said. She had clipped a stem from her geranium plant, dipped the cut end into honey, and stuck it into a pot filled with compost. Megan was teaching me how to propagate geraniums: how to turn one healthy plant into many plants, so I would have flowers to share with others. The honey, she said, was to help the young plant establish roots.

Watching her work, I wondered what kinds of things help us establish spiritual roots. What helps us mature into strong, flourishing people of faith? What keeps us from withering up or failing to grow? Paul, writing to the Ephesians, says that we are “rooted and established in love” (EPHESIANS 3:17). This love comes from God, who strengthens us by giving us the Holy Spirit. Christ dwells in our hearts. And as we begin to “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (V. 18), we can have a rich experience of God’s presence as we’re “completely filled and flooded with God Himself” (V. 19 AMP).

Growing spiritually requires rooting into the love of God— meditating on the truth that we are beloved by the God who is able to do “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (V. 20). What an incredible basis for our faith! - AMY PETERSON

볼 수 있는 눈

EYES TO SEE

I recently discovered the wonder of anamorphic art. Appearing at first as an assortment of random parts, an anamorphic sculpture only makes sense when viewed from the correct angle. In one piece, a series of vertical poles align to reveal a famous lead- er’s face. In another, a mass of cable becomes the outline of an elephant. Another artwork, made of hundreds of black dots suspended by wire, becomes a woman’s eye when seen correctly. The key to anamorphic art is viewing it from different angles until its meaning is revealed.

With thousands of verses of history, poetry, and more, the Bible can sometimes be hard to understand. But Scripture itself tells us how to unlock its meaning. Treat it like an anamorphic sculpture: view it from different angles and meditate on it deeply.

Christ’s parables work this way. Those who care enough to ponder them gain “eyes to see” their meaning (MATTHEW 13:10–16). Paul told Timothy to “reflect” on his words so God would give him insight (2 TIMOTHY 2:7). And the repeated refrain of Psalm 119 is how meditating on Scripture brings wisdom and insight, opening our eyes to see its meaning (119:18, 97–99).

How about pondering a single parable for a week or reading a gospel in one sitting? Spend some time viewing a verse from all angles. Go deep. Biblical insight comes from meditating on Scrip- ture, not just reading it.

결코 채울 수 없는 만족감

프랭크 보먼은 달을 한 바퀴 도는 첫 우주 임무를 지휘했지만 별로 감명 받지 못했습니다. 여행은 왕복 이틀이 걸렸는데, 프랭크는 멀미하며 토하기까지 했습니다. 그는 무중력을 경험하는 일은 재미있었다고 - 그것도 30초 동안만- 말했지만, 곧 그것에도 익숙해졌습니다. 달에 가까이 접근한 그는 분화구들로 칙칙하게 자국이 있는 달을 보았습니다. 동료 승무원들도 회색의 황무지 사진을 몇 장 찍더니 곧 지루해 했습니다.

프랭크는 아무도 가본 적이 없는 곳을 갔지만 만족할 수 없었습니다. 이렇듯 지구 밖의 경험도 쉽게 지루해진다면 아마도 지구 안의 경험에 대한 우리의 기대치를 좀 낮춰야 할 것 같습니다. 전도서 저자는 이 세상의 어떤 경험도 궁극적인 기쁨을 주지 못한다고 말했습니다. “눈은 보아도 족함이 없고 귀는 들어도 가득 차지 아니 하도다”(1:8). 우리가 황홀한 순간을 느낄지 몰라도 그 감동은 곧 사라지고 우리는 또 다른 감동을 찾아 나섭니다.

그러다가 프랭크는 달 뒤의 암흑에서 지구가 떠오르는 것을 보는 순간 황홀함을 느꼈습니다. 흰색과 파란색이 소용돌이치는 대리석처럼 우리 지구가 햇빛을 받아 빛나고 있었습니다. 이처럼 우리의 진정한 기쁨은 하나님의 아들이신 예수님이 우리 위에 비췰 때 찾아 옵니다. 예수님은 우리의 생명이시며, 의미와 사랑과 아름다움의 유일한 궁극적인 원천이십니다. 우리의 가장 큰 만족은 이 세상 밖으로부터 옵니다. 우리의 문제는 우리가 달까지는 갈 수 있지만 아직 충분할 만큼 더 멀리 갈 수 없다는 것입니다.

NEVER ENOUGH

Frank Borman commanded the first space mission that circled the moon. He wasn’t impressed. The trip took two days both ways. Frank got motion sickness and threw up. He said being weightless was cool—for thirty seconds. Then he got used to it. Up close he found the moon drab and pockmarked with craters. His crew took pictures of the gray wasteland, then became bored.

Frank went where no one had gone before. It wasn’t enough. If he quickly tired of an experience that was out of this world, perhaps we should lower our expectations for what lies in this one. The teacher of Ecclesiastes observed that no earthly experience delivers ultimate joy. “The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing” (1:8). We may feel moments of ecstasy, but our elation soon wears off and we seek the next thrill.

Frank had one exhilarating moment, when he saw the earth rise from the darkness behind the moon. Like a blue and white swirled marble, our world sparkled in the sun’s light. Similarly, our truest joy comes from the Son shining on us. Jesus is our life, the only ultimate source of meaning, love, and beauty. Our deepest satisfaction comes from out of this world. Our problem? We can go all the way to the moon, yet still not go far enough. - MIKE WITTMER

유머 작가 마이클 야코넬리는 소 목장 근처에 살면서 소들이 풀을 뜯다가 어떻게 길을 잃게 되는지 알게 되었습니다. 소는 항상 동화 속의 “더 푸른 초원”을 찾아 계속 이동합니다. 그러다가 목장의 울타리 근처에서 나무 그늘 아래 멋진 신선한 풀을 발견합니다. 그리고 울타리의 부서진 부분 바로 너머에 맛있어 보이는 나뭇잎 더미가 있습니다. 그러면 소가 울타리를 넘어 도로로 나가기도 합니다. 천천히 “조금씩 멀어지다가” 결국 길을 잃어버리게 되는 것입니다.

그렇게 방황하는 문제는 소만의 문제가 아닙니다. 양들도 길을 잃고, 무엇보다 사람들이 길을 잘 잃는 것 같습니다.

아마도 그런 이유로 하나님이 성경에서 우리를 양에 비유하시는 것 같습니다. 우리는 아주 쉽게 무모하게 타협하고 어리석은 결정을 내려 헤매고 “조금씩 멀어져” 가다가, 나중에는 진리로부터 얼마나 멀리 벗어났는지도 전혀 모르게 됩니다.

예수님은 바리새인들에게 길을 잃은 양에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 목자에게 양은 아주 귀한 것이어서 목자는 다른 양들을 남겨 두고 길을 잃은 양을 찾아 나섰습니다. 마침내 잃어버린 양을 찾았을 때 목자는 잔치를 벌였습니다! (누가복음 15:1-7).

이처럼 하나님도 그분께 돌아오는 자들로 기뻐하십니다. 예수님은 “나와 함께 즐기자 나의 잃은 양을 찾아내었노라”(6절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 우리를 구원하여 본향으로 인도하시려고 우리에게 구주 예수님을 보내주셨습니다.

WANDERING OFF

Living near cattle ranches as he did, humorist Michael Yaconelli noticed how cows were prone to wander while grazing. A cow would keep moving, always looking for the fabled “greener pastures.” Near the edge of the property, the cow might discover some cool fresh grass under a shade tree. Just beyond a broken-down part of the fence was a tasty clump of foliage. Then the cow might push far beyond the fence and out to the road. It slowly “nibbled” its way into being lost.

Cows aren’t alone in their roaming problem. Sheep also wander, and it’s likely that people have the biggest tendency of all to stray.

Perhaps that’s one of the reasons God compares us to sheep in the Bible. It can be easy to meander and “nibble our way” through reckless compromises and foolish decisions, never noticing how far away from the truth we’ve strayed.

Jesus told the Pharisees the story of a lost sheep. The sheep was of such value to the shepherd that he left his other sheep behind while he searched for the wandering one. And when he found the one that had strayed, He celebrated! (LUKE 15:1–7).

Such is the happiness of God over those who turn back to Him. Jesus said, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep” (V. 6). God has sent us a Savior to rescue us and bring us home. - CINDY HESS KASPER

약속을 지키시는 하나님

조나단은 혼인서약문을 따라 말할 때 신부 라숀에게 하는 서약의 중압감에 눌려 말을 더듬었습니다. 그는 생각했습니다. ‘지키기가 불가능한 약속인 줄 알면서 어떻게 그런 서약을 할 수 있지?’ 결혼식은 무사히 마쳤지만 지켜야 할 서약의 중압감은 여전히 그에게 남아 있었습니다. 결혼 피로연이 끝난 후, 조나단은 신부를 예배당으로 데리고 가서 두 시간이 넘게 라숀을 사랑하고 아끼겠다고 한 약속을 지킬 수 있게 해달라고 하나님께 기도했습니다.

조나단이 결혼식에서 두려움을 느꼈던 것은 자신의 인간적인 나약함을 알았기 때문이었습니다. 하지만 아브라함의 자손들을 통하여 열방에게 복을 주리라 약속하신 하나님(갈라디아서 3:16)은 그런 한계가 없습니다. 유대인 기독교 신자들에게 예수님을 믿는 믿음을 유지하기 위한 인내와 끈기를 북돋우기 위해 히브리서 저자는 아브라함에게 주신 하나님의 약속과 그의 기다림의 인내, 그리고 약속의 성취를 회상하고 있습니다(히브리서 6:13-15). 아브라함과 사라의 나이가 많은 것도 아브라함에게 “많은 후손”을 주겠다 (14절)는 하나님의 약속을 완성하는데 방해가 되지 못했습니다.

혹 힘이 없고 약한 인간이라서 하나님을 믿는데 어려움이 있습니까? 약속과 맹세와 서약을 지키려고 고군분투하고 있습니까? 고린도후서 12장 9절에서 하나님은 우리를 돕겠다고 약속하십니다. “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라.” 하나님은 36년 이상 조나단과 라숀이 혼인서약을 지킬 수 있도록 도우셨습니다. 하나님을 신뢰함으로 당신을 도와달라고 하십시오.

PROMISE-KEEPER

Gripped by the gravity of the promises he was making to LaShonne, Jonathan found himself stumbling as he repeated his wedding vows. He thought, How can I make these promises and not believe they’re possible to keep? He made it through the ceremony, but the weight of his commitments remained. After the reception, Jonathan led his wife to the chapel where he prayed—for more than two hours—that God would help him keep his promise to love and care for LaShonne.

Jonathan’s wedding-day fears were based on the recognition of his human frailties. But God, who promised to bless the nations through Abraham’s offspring (GALATIANS 3:16), has no such limitations. To challenge his Jewish Christian audience to perseverance and patience to continue in their faith in Jesus, the writer of Hebrews recalled God’s promises to Abraham, the patriarch’s patient waiting, and the fulfillment of what had been promised (HEBREWS 6:13–15). Abraham and Sarah’s status as senior citizens was no barrier to the fulfillment of God’s promise to give Abraham “many descendants” (V. 14).

Are you challenged to trust God despite being weak, frail, and human? Are you struggling to keep your commitments, to fulfill your pledges and vows? In 2 Corinthians 12:9, God promises to help us: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made per- fect in weakness.” For more than thirty-six years God has helped Jonathan and LaShonne to remain committed to their vows.
