당신의 모습

그의 이름은 드냔입니다. 그는 이 세상을 배움터로 여기면서, 자신이 방문하는 모든 도시와 지역을 “아주 커다란 학교”라고 이야기합니다. 그는 사람들을 만나고 그들을 통해 배우기 위해 2016년 자전거를 타고 4년의 여행을 시작했습니다. 그는 사람들이 언어 장벽에 부딪칠 때 때로는 서로를 보는 것만으로도 이해할 수 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 또한 대화하기 위해 휴대전화에 있는 번역기에 의존하기도 합니다. 그는 여행한 거리나 접한 풍경으로 자신의 여정을 평가하지 않습니다. 대신에 “저는 당신이 쓰는 언어를 모를 수도 있지만 당신이 누구인지는 알고 싶습니다.”라는 식으로 자신의 마음에 인상을 남긴 사람들의 점수를 매깁니다.

세상은 아주 크지만 하나님은 이 세상과 그에 속한 사람들에 대한 모든 것을 완벽히 다 알고 계십니다. 시편 기자 다윗은 하나님의 손으로 지으신 모든 작품, 즉 만드신 하늘과 달과 별들을 볼 때 경외심을 가졌습니다(시편 8:3). “사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까”(4절)라며 놀라워했습니다.

하나님은 다른 누구보다도 당신을 더 자세하게 알고 돌보십니다. 우리는 “여호와 우리 주여 주의 이름이 온 땅에 어찌 그리 아름다운지요”(1, 9절)라고 응답할 수밖에 없습니다.

WHO YOU ARE

His name is Dnyan, and he considers himself a student of the world. And “this is a very big school,” he says of all the cities and towns he’s passed through. He began a four-year jour- ney on his bicycle in 2016 to meet and learn from people. When there’s a language barrier, he finds that sometimes people can understand just by looking at each other. He also depends on a translation app on his phone to communicate. He doesn’t measure his journey in the miles he’s traveled or the sights he’s seen. Instead, he measures it in the people who’ve left an imprint on his heart: “Maybe I do not know your language, but I would like to find out who you are.”

It’s a very big world, yet God knows everything about it and the people in it—fully and completely. The psalmist David was in awe of God when he considered all the works of His hands: the making of the heavens, the moon, and the stars (PSALM 8:3). He wondered, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (V. 4).

God knows you more thoroughly than anyone else possibly can and He cares for you. We can only respond, “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (VV. 1, 9).

크리스마스 선물로 주신 말

톰 은 수술 후 생긴 뇌졸중으로 언어능력을 상실하고 오래동안 재활치료를 받아야 했습니다. 그러던 그가 몇 주 후에 우리 교회 추수감사절 예배에 나타났을 때 우리는 놀라며 기뻐했습니다. 우리를 더 놀라게 한 것은 그가 말을 하려고 일어섰을 때였습니다. 무슨 말을 해야 할지 생각하느라 말은 왔다 갔다 하고, 했던 말을 또 하고, 날짜와 시간도 혼동했습니다. 그러나 한 가지는 분명했습니다. 그는 하나님을 찬양하고 있었습니다! 마음은 아프지만 동시에 은혜가 넘치는 순간이 있을 수 있는데, 그때가 바로 그런 순간이었습니다.

“성탄 전에 있었던 이야기”에서 우리는 말을 못하게 된 한 사람을 만납니다. 천사 가브리엘이 제사장인 사가랴에게 나타나서 그가 가장 위대한 선지자의 아버지가 될 것이라고 말했습니다(누가복음 1:11-17 참조). 나이가 많았던 사가랴와 그의 아내는 그 말을 믿지 않았습니다. 그때 가브리엘은 “이 일이 되는 날까지”(20절) 사가랴가 말을 할 수 없게 되리라고 했습니다.

그날은 정말 일어났습니다. 그리고 기적처럼 얻은 아기의 이름을 짓는 예식에서 사가랴의 말문이 열렸습니다. 그는 말문이 열리자 바로 하나님을 찬양했습니다(64절). 그리고 말했습니다. “이스라엘의 주 하나님을 찬양하여라. 그가 오셔서 자기 백성을 죄에서 견져 주셨다”(68절, 현대인의 성경).

사가랴와 같이 톰은 말을 할 수 있게 되자마자 바로 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 그들의 마음은 그들의 혀와 생각을 지으신 그분께 향했습니다. 이 계절에 우리는 어떤 일을 만나든지 같은 방법으로 반응할 수 있습니다.

THE CHRISTMAS GIFT OF SPEECH

A post-surgical stroke had robbed Tom of his ability to speak, and he faced a long rehab journey. Weeks later, we were pleasantly surprised when he showed up at our church’s Thanksgiving service. We were even more surprised when he stood up to speak. Searching for what to say, he jumbled his words, repeated himself, and confused days and time. But one thing was clear: he was praising God! It’s possible to have your heart break and be blessed at the same moment. This was that kind of moment.

In the “pre-Christmas story” we meet a man who lost the gift of speech. Gabriel the angel appeared to Zechariah the priest and told him he would be the father of a great prophet (SEE LUKE 1:11–17). Zechariah and his wife were elderly, so he doubted it. That’s when Gabriel told him he would not speak “until the day this happens” (V. 20).

The day did happen. And at the ceremony to name the miracle baby, Zechariah spoke. With his first words he praised God (V. 64). Then he said, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them” (V. 68).

Like Zechariah, as soon as he was able, Tom’s response was to praise God. Their hearts were inclined toward the One who made their tongues and their minds. Regardless of what faces us this season, we can respond the same way.

기도의 씨름

누군가로부터 신약성경을 받고 나서 데니스의 삶은 변화되었습니다. 성경을 읽으면서 거기에 빠져들었고, 성경은 항상 그와 함께하는 친구가 되었습니다. 6개월 사이에 그의 인생을 바꾸는 두 가지 사건이 일어났습니다. 하나는 예수님을 믿고 죄 사함을 받은 일이고, 또 하나는 심한 두통을 앓다가 뇌종양 판정을 받은 일입니다. 견딜 수 없는 통증 때문에 몸져누웠고 일도 할 수 없게 되었습니다. 고통으로 잠 못 이루던 어느 날 밤에 그는 하나님께 울부짖었습니다. 그러다 새벽 네 시 반이 되어서야 겨우 잠이 들었습니다.

우리는 육체적인 고통으로 하나님께 울부짖기도 하지만, 괴로운 삶의 환경 때문에도 주님께 달려갑니다. 데니스가 고통으로 씨름하던 밤보다 훨씬 오래 전, 절박했던 사람 야곱은 하나님과 대결하였습니다(창세기 32:24-32). 야곱에게는 해결하지 못한 가족의 문제가 있었습니다. 그는 형 에서에게 잘못을 저질렀고(27장), 자신에 대한 보복이 가까운 것을 알고 두려워했습니다. 야곱은 이 어려운 상황에서 하나님의 도우심을 구하다 하나님과 직접 대면하였고 (32:30), 그 일로 변화된 사람이 되었습니다.

그리고 데니스도 마찬가지였습니다. 기도로 하나님께 간구했던 데니스는 침상을 털고 일어날 수 있었으며, 검사에서도 종양이 발견되지 않았습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 항상 기적적으로 치유하시는 것은 아니지만, 우리 기도를 들으시고 상황에 따라 필요한 것을 주실 것이라 확신합니다. 절망 속에서 우리는 하나님께 진심으로 기도하고 결과를 하나님께 맡깁니다!

PRAYERFUL WRESTLING

Dennis’ life was transformed after someone gave him a New Testament. Reading it captivated him, and it became his constant companion. Within six months, two life-changing events occurred in his life. He placed his faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of his sins, and he was diagnosed with a brain tumor after experiencing severe headaches. Because of the unbearable pain, he became bedridden and unable to work. One painful, sleepless night he found himself crying out to God. Sleep finally came at 4:30 a.m.

Bodily pain can cause us to cry out to God, but other excruciating life circumstances also compel us to run to Him. Centuries before Dennis’ night of wrestling, a desperate Jacob faced off with God (GENESIS 32:24–32). For Jacob, it was unfinished family business. He had wronged his brother Esau (CH. 27), and he feared that pay- back was imminent. In seeking God’s help in this difficult situation, Jacob encountered God face-to-face (32:30) and emerged from it a changed man.

And so did Dennis. After pleading with God in prayer, Dennis was able to stand up after being bedridden, and the doctor’s examination showed no signs of the tumor. Although God doesn’t always choose to miraculously heal us, we’re confident that He always hears our prayers and will give us what we need for our situation. In our desperation we offer sincere prayers to God and leave the results to Him!

아침 안개

어느 날 아침 집 근처의 연못에 갔습니다. 뒤집어놓은 보트에 앉아서 부드러운 서풍이 수면 위 한 겹의 안개를 밀어내는 것을 보며 생각에 잠겼습니다. 안개가 원을 그리며 소용돌이쳤습니다. 작은 “회오리바람” 이 일었다가 사라졌습니다.

이내 햇빛이 구름 사이로 나오면서 안개는 사라졌습니다. 방금 읽었던 “내가 네 허물을 빽빽한 구름같이, 네 죄를 안개 같이 없이하였으니”(이사야 44:22)라는 말씀과 연결되어 이 광경은 나에게 위안을 주었습니다. 며칠 동안 나를 사로잡고 있던 꼬리를 무는 나쁜 생각들을 떨쳐내려고 그 장소를 찾은 것입니다. 죄를 고백했지만 같은 죄를 또다시 지었을 때 하나님께서 나를 용서해 주실지 의문이 들기 시작했습니다.

그날 아침 이에 대한 답이 ‘그렇다’라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이스라엘 백성이 계속해서 우상을 섬기는 문제로 어려움을 겪을 때 하나님은 선지자 이사야를 통해 그들에게 은혜를 베푸셨습니다. 하나님은 그들에게 거짓 신을 좇는 것을 그만두라고 질책하신 동시에, “내가 너를 지었으니 너는 내 종이니라...... 너는 나에게 잊혀지지 아니하리라”(21절)라고 말씀하시며 그들을 다시 부르셨습니다.

나는 그런 용서를 완전히 이해하지는 못하지만, 하나님의 은혜가 우리의 죄를 완전히 없애주고 그 죄에서 우리를 치유하실 수 있는 유일한 것임을 압니다. 하나님의 은혜는 끝이 없고 그분처럼 거룩하며, 우리가 필요로 할 때 언제든 베풀어주시니 감사합니다.

MORNING MIST

One morning I visited a pond near my house. I sat on an over- turned boat, thinking and watching a gentle west wind chase a layer of mist across the water’s surface. Wisps of fog circled and swirled. Mini “tornadoes” rose up and then exhausted themselves. Before long, the sunlight cut through the clouds and the mist disappeared.

This scene comforted me because I connected it with a verse I’d just read: “I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist” (ISAIAH 44:22). I visited the place hoping to distract myself from a series of sinful thoughts I’d been preoccupied with for days. Although I was confessing them, I began to wonder if God would forgive me when I repeated the same sin.

That morning, I knew the answer was yes. Through His prophet Isaiah, God showed grace to the Israelites when they struggled with the ongoing problem of idol worship. Although He told them to stop chasing false gods, God also invited them back to Himself, saying, “I have made you, you are my servant; . . . I will not forget you” (V. 21).

I don’t fully grasp forgiveness like that, but I do understand that God’s grace is the only thing that can dissolve our sin completely and heal us from it. I’m thankful His grace is endless and divine like He is, and that it’s available whenever we need it.

진실된 종

기원전 27년에 로마의 통치자 옥타비아누스는 자신의 권력을 내려놓기 위해서 원로원 앞에 섰습니다. 그는 내전을 종식시키고 그 지역의 유일한 통치자가 되었으며 황제처럼 군림했습니다. 그러나 그는 그러한 권력이 충분한 지지를 얻지 못하고 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 옥타비아누스는 로마의 원로원 앞에서 본인은 단순히 임명된 관리일 뿐이라고 맹세하면서 그의 권력을 포기했습니다. 의회의 반응은 어떠했을까요? 원로원은 그 통치자에게 시민의 영예로운 관을 씌워주고 로마 백성을 섬기는 자로 명명함으로써 그에게 통치자의 명예를 선사했습니다. 또한 그는 “위대한 사람”이란 뜻의 아우구스투스란 이름을 얻었습니다.

바울 사도는 예수님께서 자신을 비우시고 종의 모습을 취하셨다고 썼습니다. 아우구스투스도 같은 행동을 한 것처럼 보였습니다. 아니면 실제로 그렇게 했을까요? 아우구스투스는 자기의 권력을 내려놓는 시늉만 한 것이지 사실은 자기 유익을 위해 그렇게 했습니다. 예수님은 “자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으셨습니다”(빌립보서 2:8). 로마의 십자가에서의 죽음은 가장 모욕적이고 치욕적인 것이었습니다.

오늘날 사람들이 “섬기는 리더십”을 미덕으로 여기는 첫 번째 이유는 예수님 때문입니다. 겸손은 그리스나 로마에서는 미덕이 아니었습니다. 우리를 위해 십자가에서 돌아가신 예수님은 참된 종이시며 진정한 구주이십니다.

예수 그리스도는 우리를 구원하기 위해서 종이 되셨습니다. 주님이 “자기를 비우심”(7절)으로 우리는 구원과 영생이라는 너무나 큰 선물을 받을 수 있었습니다.

THE TRUE SERVANT

In 27 BC, the Roman ruler Octavian came before the Senate to lay down his powers. He’d won a civil war, become the sole ruler of that region of the world, and was functioning like an emperor. Yet he knew such power was viewed suspiciously. So Octavian renounced his powers before the Senate, vowing to sim- ply be an appointed official. Their response? The Roman Senate honored the ruler by crowning him with a civic crown and naming him the servant of the Roman people. He was also given the name Augustus—the “great one.”

Paul wrote of Jesus emptying Himself and taking on the form of a servant. Augustus appeared to do the same. Or had he? Augustus only acted like he was surrendering his power but was doing it for his own gain. Jesus “humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (PHILIPPIANS 2:8). Death on a Roman cross was the worst form of humiliation and shame.

Today, a primary reason people praise “servant leadership” as a virtue is because of Jesus. Humility wasn’t a Greek or Roman virtue. Because Jesus died on the cross for us, He’s the true Servant. He’s the true Savior.

Christ became a servant in order to save us. He “made himself nothing” (V. 7) so that we could receive something truly great—the gift of salvation and eternal life.

하나님의 인도하심

은행에서 실수로 12만 달러를 한 부부의 계좌에 입금시켰는데 그들은 그 돈으로 흥청망청 쇼핑을 했습니다. 밀린 청구서들을 갚는 것뿐만 아니라 SUV 한 대, 캠핑카 한 대, 거기다 사륜자동차 두 대를 더 샀습니다. 예금의 오류를 발견한 은행은 부부에게 그 돈을 반환해 달라고 했는데 불행히도 그 돈을 다 쓴 후였습니다. 그래서 그들은 절도 중범죄로 기소되었습니다. 지역 법원에 나온 남편은 기자에게 “우리는 잘못된 법률 자문을 받았습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 이 부부는 나쁜 자문을 따르면(그래서 남의 돈을 쓰면) 인생을 망칠 수 있다는 것을 배웠습니다.

반대로 시편 기자는 우리의 인생을 망치지 않는 현명한 조언을 나누었습니다. 그는 진정으로 만족한 삶을 사는 사람, 곧 복 있는 사람은 하나님을 섬기지 않는 자들의 조언을 따르지 않는다고 기록했습니다(시편 1:1). 그들은 어리석고 악한 조언은 보이지 않는 위험과 큰 대가를 치를 수 있음을 알고 있습니다. 또한 그들은 영원하고 흔들리지 않는 성경의 진리를 따르며 (“기쁨”을 찾으며) 그 진리에 사로잡히게 됩니다(“묵상합니다”)(2절). 그들은 하나님의 인도하심에 복종하면 평안과 결실을 얻게 된다는 것을 깨달았습니다 (3절).

우리도 진로, 돈, 관계 등에 대하여 크고 작은 결정을 내릴 때 성경에 기록된 하나님의 지혜와 신실한 조언, 성령의 인도하심을 구하길 바랍니다. 삶을 망치지 않고 만족스럽게 살기 위해 하나님의 인도하심은 꼭 필요하며 또 신뢰할만 합니다.

GOD’S GUIDANCE

When their bank accidentally deposited $120,000 into their account, a couple went on a shopping spree. They pur- chased an SUV, a camper, and two four-wheelers in addition to paying off bills. Discovering the deposit error, the bank told the couple to return the money. Unfortunately, the husband and wife had already spent it. They were then charged with felony theft. When the couple arrived at the local court, the husband said to a reporter, “We took some bad legal advice.” The two learned that following bad advice (and spending what wasn’t theirs) could lead to making a mess of their lives.

In contrast, the psalmist shared wise advice that can help us avoid messing up in life. He wrote that those who find genuine fulfillment—who are “blessed”—refuse to be influenced by the advice of those who don’t serve God (PSALM 1:1). They know that unwise, ungodly counsel can lead to unseen dangers and costly consequences. Also, they’re motivated by (find “delight” in) and preoccupied with (“meditate on”) the timeless and unshakable truths of Scripture (V. 2). They’ve found that submitting to God’s guidance leads to stability and fruitfulness (V. 3).

When we’re making decisions, big or small, about our careers, money, relationships, and more, may we seek God’s wisdom found in the Bible, godly counsel, and the leading of the Holy Spirit. His guidance is essential and trustworthy for living a fulfilling life and not creating messes.

ON THE SAME TEAM

When Philadelphia Eagle’s quarterback Carson Wentz returned to the field after healing from a severe injury, the NFL team’s backup quarterback, Nick Foles, graciously returned to the bench. Although competing for the same position, the two men chose to support each other and remained confident in their roles. One reporter observed that the two athletes have a “unique relationship rooted in their faith in Christ” shown through their ongoing prayers for each other. As others watched, they brought honor to God by remembering they were on the same team—not just as Eagles quarterbacks, but as believers in Jesus representing Him.

The apostle Paul reminds believers to live as “children of the light” awaiting Jesus’ return (1 THESSALONIANS 5:5–6). With our hope secure in the salvation Christ has provided, we can shrug off any temptations to compete out of jealousy, insecurity, fear, or envy. Instead, we can “encourage one another and build each other up” (V. 11). We can respect spiritual leaders who honor God and “live in peace” as we serve together to accomplish our shared goal—telling people about the gospel and encouraging others to live for Jesus (VV. 12–15).

As we serve on the same team, we can heed Paul’s command: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (VV. 16–18).

절망에 빠진 자의 기도

“사 랑하는 하나님 아버지, 나는 평소에 기도하는 사람이 아닙니다. 하지만 거기서 제 기도를 들으신다면 저에게 길을 보여주세요. 저는 절망의 끝에 있습니다.” 이것은 고전명화 ‘멋진 인생’에서 지미 스튜어트가 연기한 절망에 빠진 조지 베일리의 조용한 기도입니다. 영화의 가장 기억에 남는 이 장면에서 베일리의 눈에는 눈물이 고입니다. 원래 대본에는 없는 눈물이었지만 스튜어트는 이 기도를 할 때 “어디서도 도움을 받을 곳이 없는 사람들의 외로움과 절망을 실제로 느꼈다”라고 회고합니다. 그때 그가 무너진 것입니다.

베일리의 기도는 간단히 말해서 “나를 도와주세요”입니다. 시편 109 편이 바로 그것입니다. 다윗은 절망의 끝에 놓였습니다: “가난하고 궁핍하여,” “중심이 상하고”(22절), 육신이 “수척하고”(24절), 기력을 잃어. “석양의 그림자 같고”(23절), 비방하는 자들의 눈에 “경멸의 대상”임을 느꼈습니다 (25절). 철저히 무너진 그는 도움을 청할 곳이 없었습니다. 주권자 하나님께 길을 보여달라고 외쳤습니다. “여호와 나의 하나님이시여 나를 도우소서”(26절).

살다보면 “망했다”라고 밖에 설명할 수 없는 때가 있습니다. 이럴 때에는 무슨 기도를 해야 할지 생각이 나지 않습니다. 사랑의 하나님은 도와 달라는 단순한 기도에 응답하실 것입니다.

PRAYER OF THE BROKEN-DOWN

“D ear Father in heaven, I’m not a praying man, but if you’re up there, and you can hear me, show me the way. I’m at the end of my rope.” That prayer is whispered by a broken­down George Bailey, the character played by Jimmy Stewart in the classic film It’s a Wonderful Life. In the now iconic scene, Bailey’s eyes fill with tears. They weren’t part of the script, but as he spoke that prayer Stewart said he “felt the loneliness, the hopelessness of people who had nowhere to turn.” It broke him.

Bailey’s prayer, boiled down, is simply “Help me.” And this is exactly what’s voiced in Psalm 109. David was at the end of his rope: “poor and needy,” his “heart . . . wounded” (V. 22), and his body “thin and gaunt” (V. 24). He was fading “like an evening shadow” (V. 23), and sensed himself to be an “object of scorn” in the eyes of his accusers (V. 25). In his extreme brokenness, he had nowhere else to turn. He cried out for the Sovereign Lord to show him the way: “Help me, Lord my God” (V. 26).

There are seasons in our lives when “broken down” says it all. In such times it can be hard to know what to pray. Our loving God will respond to our simple prayer for help.

베티 이모의 방식

어렸을 때에 나를 무조건 사랑해준 베티 이모가 우리 집에 올 때는 마치 크리스마스처럼 느껴졌습니다. 이모는 스타워즈 장난감들을 가져왔고 갈 때는 용돈을 주었습니다. 이모집에 놀러 갈 때면 이모는 냉동실을 아이스크림으로 꽉 채워놓고 절대 채소는 요리하지 않았습니다. 따라야 할 규칙들도 거의 없었고 밤늦게까지 자지 않아도 되었습니다. 이모는 하나님의 관대함을 보여주는 멋진 분이었습니다. 그러나 내가 건강하게 자라려면 베티 이모의 방식과 더불어 다른 것도 필요했습니다. 내가 어떤 사람이 되고 어떻게 행동하는 것이 옳은지 기준을 정하고 그것을 지키게 만드는 부모님이 필요했던 것입니다.

하나님은 나에게 베티 이모보다 더 많은 것을 요구하십니다. 하나님은 한없는 사랑을 넘치게 베푸시며 심지어 우리가 저항하고 도망을 쳐도 그의 사랑은 흔들림이 없습니다. 그러나 또한 하나님에게는 우리가 지켜야 할 어떤 기준이 있습니다. 하나님이 이스라엘 민족에게 어떻게 살아야 할지를 가르치실 때, 열 가지 제안이 아니라 열 가지 명령, 곧 십계명을 주셨습니다(출애굽기 20:1-17). 하나님은 우리가 그것을 지키지 못할 것을 아시고 우리에게 분명한 기대치를 말해주셨습니다. “하나님을 [사랑하고] 그의 계명을 [지키라]”(요한 1서 5:2).

감사하게도 “[하나님의] 계명은 무거운 것이 아닙니다”(3절). 성령의 능력으로 하나님의 사랑과 기쁨을 체험하면서 그가 주신 계명들을 지키며 살 수 있습니다. 우리를 위한 하나님의 사랑은 멈추지 않습니다. 그러나 성경은 우리가 하나님을 사랑하는지 알 수 있는 질문을 이렇게 합니다. ‘성령의 인도하심을 따라 하나님의 계명을 지키고 있습니까?’

우리가 하나님을 사랑한다고 ‘말’은 할 수 있지만 실제로는 하나님의 능력 안에서 우리가 ‘행하는’ 것이 사실을 말해줍니다.

AUNT BETTY’S WAY

When I was young, whenever my doting Aunt Betty visited, it felt like Christmas. She’d bring Star Wars toys and slip me cash on her way out the door. Whenever I stayed with her, she filled the freezer with ice cream and never cooked vegetables. She had few rules and let me stay up late. My aunt was marvelous, reflecting God’s generosity. However, to grow up healthy, I needed more than only Aunt Betty’s way. I also needed my parents to place expectations on me and my behavior and hold me to them.

God asks more of me than Aunt Betty. While He floods us with relentless love, a love that never wavers even when we resist or run away, He does expect something of us. When God instructed Israel how to live, He provided Ten Commandments, not ten sug- gestions (EXODUS 20:1–17). Aware of our self-deception, God offers clear expectations: we’re to “[love] God and [carry] out his com- mands” (1 JOHN 5:2).

Thankfully, “[God’s] commands are not burdensome” (V. 3). By the Holy Spirit’s power, we can live them out as we experience God’s love and joy. His love for us is unceasing. But the Scriptures offer a question to help us know if we love God in return: Are we obeying His commands as the Spirit guides us?

We can say we love God, but what we do in His strength tells the real story.

크리스마스 야드 세일

한 엄마가 매년 가족들의 크리스마스 선물 구입에 너무 많은 돈을 쓴다고 느끼고, 한 번은 뭔가 다르게 해보려고 마음을 먹었습니다. 크리스마스 몇 달 전부터 저렴한 중고품들을 찾아 야드 세일하는 곳곳을 돌아다녔습니다. 보통 때보다 더 많은 물품을 구입했지만 지출은 훨씬 적었습니다. 아이들은 크리스마스이브에 신나게 여러 선물을 열어보았습니다. 그 다음날에도 여전히 열어봐야 할 많은 선물들이 있었습니다. 엄마는 아이들이 새 선물을 받지 못한 것에 미안함을 느껴 크리스마스 아침에 줄 선물들을 더 준비해 놓았던 것입니다. 아이들은 선물을 뜯다가 이내 “선물 열어 보기도 지쳤어요! 너무 많아요!”라며 불평을 털어놓았습니다. 이것은 보통의 크리스마스 아침에 아이들이 보여주던 반응이 아니었습니다.

하나님은 우리에게 너무나 많은 것으로 축복하셨습니다. 그러나 우리는 더 큰 집, 더 좋은 차, 더 많은 예금, 혹은 [0000000] 등, 더 많은 것을 항상 바라는 것 같습니다. 바울은 성도들을 이렇게 일깨우라고 디모데에게 권면합니다. “우리가 세상에 아무것도 가지고 온 것이 없으매 또한 아무것도 가지고 가지 못하리니 우리가 먹을 것과 입을 것이 있은즉 족한 줄로 알 것이니라”(디모데전서 6:7-8).

하나님은 우리의 필요를 충족시켜 주실 뿐 아니라 호흡과 생명을 주셨습니다. 하나님께서 주신 모든 선물에 기뻐하고 만족하며 “하나님, 너무 많이 주셨어요. 이젠 더 필요 없을 정도예요!”라고 말할 수 있다면 참으로 힘이 날 것입니다. “자족하는 마음이 있으면 경건은 큰 이익이 되느니라”(6절).

THE YARD-SALE CHRISTMAS

A mom felt she’d been overspending on family Christmas gifts, so one year she decided to try something different. For a few months before the holiday, she scrounged through yard sales for inexpensive, used items. She bought more than usual but for far less money. On Christmas Eve, her children excitedly opened gift after gift after gift. The next day there were more! Mom had felt guilty about not getting new gifts so she had additional gifts for Christmas morning. The kids began opening them but quickly complained, “We’re too tired to open any more! You’ve given us so much!” That’s not a typical response from children on a Christmas morning!

God has blessed us with so much, but it seems we’re always looking for more: a bigger house, a better car, a larger bank account, or [fill in the blank]. Paul encouraged Timothy to remind people in his congregation that “we brought nothing into this world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that” (1 TIMOTHY 6:7–8).

God has given us our very breath and life—besides providing for our needs. How refreshing it might be to enjoy and be content with His gifts and to say, You’ve given us so much! We don’t need more. “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (V. 6).
