약속을 지키시는 하나님

미국 전역에서 부유한 후원자들이 학생들에게 아주 고무적인 약속을 했습니다. 초, 중, 고등학교를 다니며 우수한 학업 성적을 거두면 자신이 사는 주의 공립 커뮤니티 칼리지나 대학교의 학비를 4년 동안 지원해 준다는 것이었습니다. 통계에 의하면 어떤 도시에서는 이 소식을 접한 후 가난하든 부유하든 학생들이 더 열심히 공부하는 동기 부여가 되었다고 합니다. 한 교사는 “생각이 완전히 바뀌었어요. 유치원생들도 모두 대학에 가겠다고 합니다. 정말 그래요.”라고 말했습니다. 미래에 대한 약속이 미래에 대한 열망과 희망을 키워준 것입니다.

요한 사도는 앞으로 있을 일에 대한 약속을 말함으로써 당시의 신자 들에게 믿음의 동기를 갖게 해주었습니다. 예수님은 다시 오실 것이라고 약속 하셨습니다. 그리고 다시 오실 때에는 “우리도 그분처럼 되어 그분의 참 모습을 보게 될 것”(요한1서 3:2, 현대인의 성경)이라고 요한은 말합니다. 그는 “주를 향하여 이 소망을 가진 자마다 그의 깨끗하심과 같이 자기를 깨끗하게 한다” (3절)고 믿는 자들을 격려했습니다. 우리에게는 언젠가 예수님을 만나볼 것 이라는 확신이 있습니다. 그 약속 때문에, 그리고 우리를 사랑하시는 예수님의 사랑의 보답으로 우리도 예수님을 사랑하기 때문에, 예수님을 더 닮고 싶은 우리의 바람도 더욱 자라가게 됩니다.

예수님을 직접 대면해 뵙는 그때는 얼마나 대단한 순간이 될까요! 그때 까지 우리는 계속 예수님을 따르고 믿음을 키우며 주님의 다시 오심을 고대하고 있는 것입니다. 하나님은 그분의 약속을 지키실 것입니다.

GOD WILL KEEP IT

Wealthy benefactors in communities across the United States have made an inspiring promise to students. If they get good grades throughout their thirteen years of school in their district, the benefactors will pay for four years at a public community college or university in their state. Statistics have shown in some cities that this motivates the students, rich and poor, to start doing well immediately after they hear the news. One teacher said, “It’s been a total shift in mindset. Every kindergartener will tell you they’re going to college. It’s reality.” The promise of what’s to come increases their desire and hope for their future.

The apostle John talked about a promise of what’s to come that helped motivate the early believers in their faith. Jesus promised to return; and when He does, John says, “We shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 JOHN 3:2). He encouraged his readers: “All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure” (V. 3). We have the confident hope that one day we will see Jesus. And because of that promise, our desire to be more like Him increases because we’re loved by Him and love Him in return.

What a time that will be when we see Jesus face to face! Until then, we keep following Him, growing in our faith, and anticipating His coming. God will keep His promise.

우리를 구원하신 예수님

아문센 스콧 남극 기지에서 일하는 두 사람에게 긴급 의료조치가 필요하게 되었습니다. 한 사람에게 심장마비가 일어났고, 또 한 사람은 위장에 문제가 생겨 위독하게 되었습니다. 이들을 도울 수 있는 한가지 방법은 구조작전을 실시하는 것뿐이었습니다. 그러나 2월부터 10월까지 어두움과 섭씨 영하 75도의 혹독한 환경 때문에 겨울철에는 보통 비행기들이 위험을 감수하며 전초기지로 가지 않습니다. 그러나 조종사들은 이들의 구조에 나서기로 결정하고 이틀 간의 위험한 비행 끝에 그들을 구해냈습니다.

구조에 관한 이야기에는 언제나 감동이 있습니다. 그 중에도 예수님이 우리를 죄에서 구원하신 것은 가장 위대한 구조 이야기입니다. 베드로 사도는 “친히 나무에 달려 그 몸으로 우리 죄를 담당하셨으니 이는 우리로 죄에 대하여 죽고 의에 대하여 살게 하려 하심이라”(베드로전서 2:24)고 했습니다. 예수님은 우리의 죄를 자신의 몸에 지심으로 우리를 구해 주셨습니다. 예수님이 그 죄들을 짊어지심으로 나를 위하여, 그리고 “여러분을 위하여 고난을 당하시는” 희생을 감당하신 것입니다(21절, 새번역). 십자가에서 예수님은 “율법의 저주”(갈라디아서 3:13)를 지시고 우리의 수치를 견뎌 내셨습니다. 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리가 나음을 얻었고, 그가 죽으심으로 우리는 죄의 형벌과 권세에서 구원을 받게 되었습니다(베드로전서 2:24; 이사야 53:5).

우리를 위해 가장 가혹한 상황을 기꺼이 견디신 예수님에 의해 우리가 절박한 상황에서 구조되었다는 사실을 알 때 얼마나 감격스럽고 놀라운지 모릅니다!

JESUS RESCUED US

Two workers at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station desperately needed medical care. One had suffered a heart attack and the other was experiencing life-threatening gastric issues. The only way to ensure their recovery was to launch a rescue mission. Due to harsh conditions, however, including darkness and -75 degrees Celsius (-103°F) temperatures from February to October, planes didn’t normally risk flying to the outpost during winter. But the pilots were determined to rescue the workers—and they did, despite enduring a difficult two days of challenging flights.

Stories of rescue are inspiring. The greatest rescue story was when Jesus rescued us from sin. The apostle Peter wrote, “ ‘He himself bore our sins’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness” (1 PETER 2:24). He rescued us by bearing our sins in His body. He carried them as a sacrifice—a sacrifice in which he “suffered for you” and for me (V. 21). On the cross, Christ bore “the curse of the law” (GALATIANS 3:13) and endured our shame. He was wounded so we might be healed, and He died so that we might be delivered from the penalty and power of sin (1 PETER 2:24; ISAIAH 53:5).

How amazing it is to know that we were rescued from our own desperate condition by one who was willing to endure the harshest of conditions for us!

다른 사람들을 위한 공간

우리 가족은 매년 벽에 거는 달력을 직접 만드는데 요즘에는 넣을 것이 좀 많아졌습니다. 우리는 달력을 만들 때 지난 해에 찍은 사진 가운데 마음에 드는 것들을 넣고 중요한 날들은 눈에 띄게 합니다. 그리고 집안에 배우자와 자녀들이 새로 늘어날 때마다 사진이 빠지지 않게 계속 넣었습니다. 생일이 같은 경우도 두 번 있었고, 어떤 공휴일은 식구들 기념일들로 채워졌습니다. 그럼에도 달력의 품격이 떨어지기보다는 새 가족 들로 인해 나에게는 더 소중한 달력이 되었습니다.

하나님 나라에서는 새 신자가 더해지는 것이 언제나 축복입니다. 성경은 “하나님이 고독한 자들을 가족과 함께 살게 하신다”(시편 68:6)고 말합니다. 하나님을 “고아의 아버지”이시며 “과부의 재판장”(5절)이라 한 것처럼 그분의 사랑과 보호는 가족이라는 관계 안에서 이루어집니다. 하나님은 소외되고, 수치를 당하며, 정죄 받는 사람들을 마음으로 받아 주시며 “갇힌 자들을 이끌어내사 형통하게 하십니다”(6절).

예수님을 믿어 하나님의 가족으로 입양된 우리는(갈라디아서 4:5) 모두에게 열려 있는 하나님의 초대를 다른 사람들에게 전해야 할 사명이 있습니다 (고린도후서 5:20). 우리 집 달력처럼 하나님 가족으로 초대받아 들어오는 사람들이 많을수록 그 달력은 더 아름답게 됩니다. 우리는 가진 자원이 부족 해질까 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 누구나 들어올 자리가 충분하며 하나님은 이렇게 새 가족이 늘어나는 것을 기뻐하십니다.

MAKING ROOM FOR OTHERS

Each year my family designs a custom wall calendar, but lately it’s gotten a bit crowded. We decorate each month with our favorite photos from the previous year and highlight significant dates. As our family welcomes new spouses and children, we’ve had to squeeze in more photos to make sure every person is included. We now have two sets of shared birthdays, and some holidays are covered up by anniversaries. But instead of detracting from the calendar, all the new members make it even more precious to me.

In God’s kingdom, the inclusion of newcomers is always a blessing. The Bible tells us that “God sets the lonely in families” (PSALM 68:6). His love and protection are communicated in the context of a family, as He’s “a father to the fatherless” and “a defender of widows” (V. 5). His heart is to welcome those who are isolated, ashamed, or accused, and thus “he leads out the prisoners with singing” (V. 6).

As believers in Jesus, we’ve been adopted into God’s family (GALATIANS 4:5), and we’re commissioned to share His open invitation with others (2 CORINTHIANS 5:20). Like my family calendar, the more people who accept the invitation into God’s family, the more beautiful it becomes. We don’t have to be concerned about running out of a finite resource—there’s room enough for everyone, and He delights in new additions.

하나님의 자산

자산이란 단어를 들을 때 가장 먼저 생각나는 것이 무엇입니까? 부동산을 떠올릴 수도 있겠지만, “개인이나 사물의 성질이나 특성”을 생각해볼 수도 있습니다. 예를 들어, 어떤 목재의 자산인 특성이 그 목재에 대해 말해주는 것입니다. 목재의 질감이 어떤지? 얼마나 쉽게 수축하는지? 방수는 되는지? 다시 말해, 당신이 기대하는 그 목재의 품질이 무엇이냐 하는 것입니다.

나는 아내와 함께 연합기도, 무릎 꿇기, 성경 읽기, 성찬식 등을 행하는 전통적인 분위기의 교회에 다닙니다. 우리가 주일마다 하는 기도 중 하나에 다음과 같은 구절이 있습니다. “주님은 항상 자비를 베푸시는 자산을 가지신 동일한 주님이십니다.” 하나님의 자산은 부동산이 아니며, 가끔 한 번씩이 아니라 항상 자비를 베푸시는 하나님의 성품 또는 특성입니다.

느헤미야 9장은 이스라엘 자손들이 함께 모여 금식하며 굵은 베옷을 입고 티끌을 덮어쓴 채(1절) 그들과 조상들의 죄를 고백하는 장면을 보여줍니다(2, 16절). 그들은 지난 시간 이스라엘을 인내하신 하나님을 찬양하며 “주의 크신 긍휼로 그들을... 버리지아니하셨다”(19절)고 하였습니다. 하나님은 그들을 죽이거나 버리실 수도 있었지만 절대로 그러지 않으셨습니다. 이유가 무엇 일까요? 그것은 “은혜로우시고 불쌍히 여기시는 하나님께서” 그렇게 한다는 것은 그분의 ‘자산’이 아니기 때문입니다(31절).

기도로 고백할 때, 신뢰할 수 있는 하나님의 자산인 그분의 자비를 찬양 합시다.

GOD’S PROPERTY

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word property? Your mind may go to a piece of real estate. But you might also consider “a quality or trait belonging to an individual or thing”; for instance, the property of a certain type of wood provides insight about it. What is the wood’s texture? How prone is it to shrinkage? Is it water-resistant? In other words, what are the qualities of the wood you can depend on?

My wife and I attend a church with a traditional feel—corporate prayers, kneeling, Scripture reading, Communion. One of the prayers we pray each Sunday holds this phrase: “But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy.” Not God’s real estate but a quality or trait belonging to God—to have mercy not just once in a while but always.

Nehemiah 9 gives us a picture of the Israelites gathered together, fasting, wrapped in sackcloth and covered in ashes (V. 1), confessing their sins and the sins of their ancestors (VV. 2, 16). They praised God for His patience in Israel’s history: “Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them” (V. 19). God could have put an end to them or abandoned them, but He never did. Why? That’s not God’s property, for He is “a gracious and merciful God” (V. 31).

In our prayers of confession, let’s include praise for that dependable property of God—His mercy.

공급하시는 하나님

나의 친한 친구 샐리는 한 친구에게 생일 파티를 열어주고 싶었습니다. 그 친구가 힘든 시간을 보내고 있는 것을 알았기에 친구의 기분을 풀어주고 싶었던 것입니다. 그러나 샐리는 일자리가 없었고 멋진 파티에 들어갈 음식을 살 여윳돈이 없었습니다. 그래서 무엇이 있는지 보려고 냉장고와 찬장을 뒤졌습니다. 그리고 전에 사다 놓았던 여러 가지 재료를 가지고 멋진 스프레드(역주: 빵 등에 바르는 식재료)를 만들었습니다.

샐리가 생각해낸 그 창의적인 메뉴 이야기를 들었을 때 엘리야와 과부의 이야기가 떠올랐습니다(열왕기상 17:7-16). 과부는 가진 것이 거의 없었습니다. 사실 그 과부는 엘리야 선지자에게 자기와 아들을 위해 남은 재료로 음식을 만들어 먹고 “[그 후에는] 굶어 죽으리라”고 말했습니다(12절). 그에게는 마지막 끼니를 간신히 때울 만큼의 밀가루와 올리브 기름만 있을 뿐이었습니다.

그러나 엘리야는 하나님이 다시 비를 보내주실 때까지 “통의 가루가... 병의 기름이 없어지지 아니하리라”고 그 여인에게 확신시켜 주었습니다(14절). 그 여인은 비록 가진 것은 부족했지만 엘리야를 통한 하나님의 계시를 믿음 으로써 부엌에 먹을 것이 없어도 하나님이 필요한 것을 공급해 주신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

내 친구처럼 그 과부도 필요한 것을 얻었습니다. 우리도 그들을 따라 베풀고 살면서, 우리의 필요를 공급하시는 하나님 안에서 쉼을 얻도록 합시다.

GOD PROVIDES

My dear friend Sally wanted to give a birthday party for one of her friends. She knew her friend had been experiencing a tough time, and Sally desired to help lift her spirits. However, Sally was unemployed and didn’t have extra money to purchase food for a nice party. So she looked in her refrigerator and cabinets to see what was available. She then created a nice spread consisting of many items she’d previously purchased and had in her home.

When Sally shared with me the creative menu she came up with, I thought about the story of Elijah and the widow (1 KINGS 17:7-16). The widow didn’t have much. In fact, she told the prophet Elijah that she was going to prepare her final scraps of food for herself and her son “and [then] die” of starvation (V. 12). And she only had a small amount of flour and olive oil, just enough for their final meal.

But Elijah ensured the woman that her “jar of flour . . . and the jug of oil [would] not run dry” until God sent rain again (V. 14). By trusting in what God revealed through Elijah—even though she didn’t think she had enough—the woman found that God provided what she needed even though her kitchen was barren.

Just like my friend, the widow found what she needed. Following their examples, let’s live generously and rest in God’s provision for us.

예수님을 알아봄

카를로타는 어릴 때 자기 엄마에게 다른 사람들을 알아보는 놀라운 능력이 있다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 정작 놀라운 것은 카를로타 자신 이었습니다. 그녀에게는 ‘안면인식장애’라는 희귀병이 있었습니다. 그녀는 사람들의 얼굴을 알아보거나 기억하지 못했습니다.

예수님이 부활하신 직후 예루살렘에서 걸어오던 두 제자는 당연히 알아 보았어야 할 한 사람을 만나고도 마치 희귀병에 걸린 사람처럼 알아보지 못했습니다. 두 사람은 지난 며칠 간 있었던 일에 들떠 이야기를 나누고 있었지만 (누가복음 24:14), 세 번째 사람은 그 일을 알지 못하는 것 같아 보였습니다. 두 사람이 그에게 간단히 설명을 해 주자, 놀랍게도 그 낯선 사람(예수님)은 “모든 성경에 쓴 바 자기에 관한 것을 자세히 설명하셨습니다”(27절). 이어서 그리스도께서 그들에게 전에 여러 번 하신 것처럼 “떡을 떼어 주셨습니다”(30절). 그 순간 “그들의 눈이 밝아져 그인 줄 알아 보더니 예수는 그들에게 보이지 아니하셨습니다”(31절). 그들은 사람들에게 알리기 위해 서둘러 예루살렘으로 돌아갔습니다(33-35절).

그 제자들은 예수님과 함께 있으면서도 알아보지 못하였고, 그들이 많이 읽어서 잘 안다고 생각했던 구약 성경의 예수님도 알아보지 못했습니다. 그들 스스로 볼 수 없었기에 예수님이 직접 그들에게 나타나 주셨습니다.

우리도 그런 도움이 필요합니다. 성경에서, 그리고 우리 삶 속에서 예수님을 볼 수 있는 눈을 열어달라고 하나님께 간구합시다.

RECOGNIZING JESUS

When Carlotta was young, she thought her mother had a remarkable gift for recognizing other people. But it was Carlotta who was remarkable. She had a rare condition called prosopagnosia. She couldn’t recognize or remember faces.

Shortly after Jesus’ resurrection, two disciples walking from Jerusalem seemed as if they had such a condition when they encountered someone they should have recognized. The two were talking about the exciting news of the past few days (LUKE 24:14), but the third person seemed unaware of the events. They gave Him a quick summary, only to be surprised as this unknown person (Jesus) “explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” (V. 27). Then Christ broke bread with them (V. 30)— something He’d done many times before. At that moment, “Their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight” (V. 31). They hurried back to Jerusalem to tell others (VV. 33-35).

Those disciples didn’t recognize Jesus when they were with Him, and they hadn’t recognized Him in the Old Testament— something they read often and thought they knew well. They needed Jesus to reveal Himself to them because they couldn’t see on their own.

We need that help too. Let’s ask God to open our eyes to see Jesus on the pages of the Bible and in our lives.

남은 연료로 갈 수 있는 거리

장거리를 뛴 내 미니밴에는 DTE(Distance ’Til Empty)라는 디지털 표시가 있습니다. 이것은 남은 연료로 갈 수 있는 거리를 정확히 알려 줍니다. 요즘 신형 차량에는 대부분 이 기능이 있습니다. 유용한 기능입니다. 다음 주유해야 할 때까지 얼마나 갈 수 있는지 ‘정확히’ 아는 것은 가다가 길에 서는 일을 피할 수 있는 중요한 데이터가 되기 때문입니다!

십계명이 옛 아날로그 방식으로 DTE 기능과 같은 기능을 제공해 준다는 것을 아십니까? 그것은 바로 ‘안식일’입니다. 출애굽기 20장에서 하나님은 엿새가 지나면 은유적인 표현으로 우리의 연료가 다 떨어진다고 말씀하십니다. “안식일을 기억하여 거룩하게 지키라 엿새 동안은 힘써 네 모든 일을 행할 것이나 일곱째 날은 네 하나님 여호와의 안식일인즉... 아무 일도 하지 말라” (8-10절).

우리는 이 계명을 가볍게 여길 수 있습니다. 물론 거짓말, 도둑질, 살인, 간음, 탐욕, 우상 숭배(1-17절)와 같은 금지 사항은 매우 명백해 보입니다. 그러나 매주 하루를 꼭 쉬어야 합니까? 그것이 그렇게 중요합니까?

DISTANCE ’TIL EMPTY

My tired minivan has a digital readout with initials DTE: Distance ’Til Empty. It gives me a precise mileage countdown. Most newer cars these days have this feature. It’s a handy one: Knowing exactly how far I can go before I need to fill the gas tank is important data to avoid being stranded!

Did you know the Ten Commandments offer something of an ancient analog to the DTE feature? It’s called Sabbath. In Exodus 20, God tells us that after six days, we’re out of metaphorical gas: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work” (VV. 8-10).

We might be tempted to ignore this commandment. After all, the prohibitions against lying, stealing, murder, adultery, coveting, and idolatry (VV. 1-17) seem pretty obvious. But resting for a day each week? Is it really that important?

We might think we can “cheat” here. But the gift the Sabbath offers is an invitation to rest. To cease laboring. To remember that God provides for us, not our own constant labor.

Distance ’til empty? Six days. And on the seventh, God graciously invites us to rest, recharge, and to relinquish the notion that it’s all up to us.

As Franco Zeffirelli prepared to film his critically acclaimed version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, he made a daring decision. He chose two unknowns to play the lead characters and insisted they be close to the age of the characters as Shakespeare had penned them. Zeffirelli ultimately selected seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting as Romeo and sixteen-yearold Olivia Hussey as Juliet.

Some might think that Jesus took a similar risk with the selection of His disciples, who later took His message of forgiveness to the world. That’s when the religious leaders arrested and questioned some of them. Then Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished.”

Any assumed risk was more than overwhelmed by the real story behind these simple fishermen: “They took note that these men had been with Jesus” (4:13). The seemingly unqualified disciples had not only been with Christ, but they also had His promise to be with them always (MATTHEW 28:20). We share that promise as well (HEBREWS 13:5) and can be assured that, in His presence and with His grace, no task set before us will be too great for Him.

DARING SELECTION

프랑코 제피렐리는 큰 찬사를 받은 그의 영화 셰익스피어의 ‘로미오와 줄리엣’의 제작을 앞두고 한 가지 과감한 결정을 내렸습니다. 그는 두 무명 배우를 주인공으로 뽑으면서 그들의 나이도 셰익스피어가 그린 인물의 나이와 비슷해야 한다는 생각을 굽히지 않았습니다. 그렇게 해서 제피렐리는 로미오 역에 17세의 레너드 위팅을, 줄리엣 역에 16세의 올리비아 핫세를 선택한 것입니다.

어떤 사람들은 예수님이 그의 용서의 메시지를 세상에 전하게 될 제자들을 정하실 때 이와 비슷하게 과감한 선택을 하셨다고 생각합니다. 당시 종교 지도자들이 제자 중의 몇을 붙잡아 심문하였던 일을 사도행전 4장 13절은 이렇게 말합니다. “그들이 베드로와 요한이 담대하게 말함을 보고 그들을 본래 학문 없는 범인으로 알았다가 이상히 여기더라.”

근거 없는 두려움

“사랑해. 절대로 당신을 떠나지 않을 게.” 줄리아는 두려울 때마다 남편의 이 문자 메시지를 읽을 수 있게 저장해 두었습니다. 힘든 어린 시절을 보낸 그녀는 사랑하는 사람으로부터 버림받을까 늘 두려워했습니다. 줄리아는 종종 남편의 확인을 구했고, 남편이 퇴근하고 집에 올 때까지 애타게 기다리곤 했습니다.

기도와 상담을 통해 줄리아는 더 건강하게 두려움에 대응할 수 있도록 도움을 받았습니다. 그녀는 말합니다. “제 남편이 해준 사랑의 약속을 가지고 제 두려움을 바라볼 겁니다. 저는 ‘그의 약속은 진실하다!’고 생각하고 그에 맞춰 행동할 겁니다.”

여로보암 왕도 근거 없이 두려워했습니다. 솔로몬의 변절로 하나님은 이미 여로보암에게 “내가 [다윗의] 아들의 손에서 나라를 빼앗아 그 열 지파를 네게 줄 것”(열왕기상 11:35)이라고 약속하셨습니다. 또한 그가 순종하면 “이스라엘을 [그에게] 주리라”(38절)고 확인해 주셨습니다.

그러나 여로보암은 두려웠습니다. “만일 이 백성이 예루살렘에 있는 여호와의 성전에 제사를 드리고자 하여 올라가면... 르호보암에게로 돌아 가리로다”(12:27)라고 생각했습니다. 두려움 때문에 자기 백성들이 솔로몬의 아들에게 돌아가지 못하도록 인근에 우상을 숭배하는 단을 세웠습니다 (26-33절). 그 일로 여로보암은 하나님의 심판을 받게 되었습니다(14:7-16). 그가 하나님이 주신 약속을 신뢰했다면 어떻게 되었을까요!

우리는 근거 없는 두려움을 혼자서 해결하지 않아도 됩니다. 하나님은 성경에서 약속하신 안전을 우리에게 주셨습니다. 하나님의 사랑의 진리가 우리의 생각과 발걸음을 비추어 인도하도록 하십시다.

UNFOUNDED FEARS

“I love you. I’ll never leave you.” Julia saved her husband’s text message so she could read it whenever she was afraid. A troubled childhood had left her with a fear of loved ones abandoning her. She’d often ask for reassurance from her husband, and she would wait anxiously for him to come home from work.

Prayer and counseling helped Julia respond to her fear in healthier ways. “I’d look at my fear in the light of my husband’s loving promises to me,” she says. “I’d think, His promises are true! and behave accordingly.”

King Jeroboam also had unfounded fears. Because of Solomon’s apostasy, God had already promised Jeroboam, “I will take the kingdom from [David’s] son’s hands and give you ten tribes” (1 KINGS 11:35). God assured him that if he obeyed Him, He would “give Israel to [him]” (V. 38).

Yet Jeroboam was afraid. “If these people . . . offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem,” he thought, “they will . . . return to King Rehoboam” (12:27). His fear drove him to set up nearby sites of idol worship to prevent his subjects from turning to Solomon’s son (VV. 26-33). As a result, Jeroboam faced God’s judgment (14:7-16). If only he’d trusted God’s promises!

We don’t have to deal with unfounded fears on our own. God has given us the safety of His promises in Scripture. Let’s allow His loving truths to illuminate our mind and steps.

아리스토텔레스는 아무도 신의 친구가 될 수 없다고 했습니다. 왜 일까요? 친구 관계에는 평등이 필요한데, 어느 신이 천상의 지위에서 내려와 낮은 인간과 같아지려 하겠습니까?

만약 아리스토텔레스가 최후의 만찬(마태복음 26:26-35) 자리에 있었다면 어땠을지 궁금합니다. 그 자리에서 만물의 창조주시며 하늘의 자리를 떠나 낮은 인간이 되신 예수님이(빌립보서 2:6-8; 골로새서 1:16) 그의 제자들에게 이제는 그들을 종이 아닌 친구라고 하셨던 것입니다(요한복음15:15).

아리스토텔레스는 그 자리에 있는 사람들을 보고 놀랐을 것입니다. 거기에는 로마에 우호적인 세리 마태와 로마를 대적하는 열심당원 시몬이 있었고(마태복음 10:3-4), “천둥의 아들들”(마가복음 3:17)이라 불리는 야고보와 요한이 조용한 성격의 빌립과 함께 있었습니다. 나는 예수님이 떡과 포도주를 가지고 자신의 “몸”과 “피”라고 하시고, 떡을 떼고 잔을 부으며 그것이 “죄 사함”을 위한 것이라고 하셨을 때(마태복음 26:26-28) 놀란 눈으로 바라보았을 아리스토텔레스의 모습을 상상해봅니다. 어떤 신이 유한한 생명의 인간들, 심지어 곧 자신을 버릴 자들을 위해 죽으려 할까요(56절)?

그것이 성찬이 아주 중요한 이유 중의 하나입니다. 예수님을 통해 하나님은 인간과 친구가 되셨고, 정치 성향과 기질이 다른 사람들이 서로 친구가 되게 하셨습니다. 우리는 주님의 식탁에서 먹고 마실 때 인간 사이에서, 그리고 하나님과 친구가 되는 새로운 법칙을 쓰신 그 주님을 기념하는 것입니다.

ARISTOTLE AT THE TABLE

Aristotle said that no one can be friends with a god. Why? Because friendship requires equality, and what god would step down from their heavenly status to become equal with lowly human beings?

I wonder what Aristotle would’ve done if he’d been present at the Last Supper (MATTHEW 26:26-35). For there, Jesus—the Creator of all, who left His heavenly status to become a lowly human being (PHILIPPIANS 2:6-8; COLOSSIANS 1:16)—told His disciples He no longer called them servants but friends (JOHN 15:15).

Aristotle would’ve been surprised too at who sat at that table. There was Matthew, the Roman-friendly tax collector; and then Simon, the Roman-denouncing Zealot (MATTHEW 10:3-4); along with James and John, the “sons of thunder” (MARK 3:17) sitting with quiet Philip. I imagine Aristotle watching quizzically as Jesus described some bread and wine as His “body” and “blood,” broken and poured out for the “forgiveness of sins” (MATTHEW 26:26-28). What god would die for mere mortals, even those who’d soon abandon Him (V. 56)?

That’s one reason Communion is so profound. Through Jesus, God became friends with humans and enabled friendships between those with political and temperamental differences. As we eat and drink at the Lord’s Table, we celebrate the one who rewrote friendship’s rules, human and divine.
