예수님의 약속

제이슨의 부모가 제이슨을 에이미에게 넘겨주자 아이가 울기 시작했습니다. 두 살배기 제이슨은 엄마 아빠가 예배를 드릴 동안 처음으로 유아실에 따로 있게 되었는데 그것이 편하지 않았던 것입니다. 에이미는 아이가 괜찮아질 거라며 그들을 안심시켰습니다. 그리고 아이를 장난감과 책으로 달래 보고, 흔들의자에 태워 보고, 함께 걸어 보고, 가만히 서 있어 보고, 무슨 재미있는 것을 해볼까 말도 걸어 보았습니다. 하지만 무엇을 해도 아이는 더 큰 소리로 울 뿐이었습니다. 그러자 에이미는 아이의 귀에다 간단히 이렇게 속삭였습니다. “내가 옆에 있어줄게.” 그러자 바로 평온함이 찾아왔습니다.

예수님은 십자가에서 고난을 당하시게 되는 그 주간에 제자들에게 이와 비슷한 위로의 말씀을 하셨습니다. “내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니 그는 진리의 영이라”(요한복음 14:16-17). 부활하신 후에는 이런 약속도 주셨습니다. “내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”(마태복음 28:20). 예수님은 곧 하늘로 올라가셨지만 성령님을 보내어 그의 백성들 안에 “머무르고” 그들과 함께 살게 하셨습니다.

눈물이 흐를 때 우리는 성령님이 주시는 위로와 평안을 경험하게 됩니다. 그리고 어찌할 바를 모를 때 그분의 인도하심을 받습니다(요한복음 14:26). 성령님은 우리의 눈을 열어 하나님을 더 알게 하시고(에베소서 1:17-20), 연약할 때 도우시며 우리를 위해 간구하십니다(로마서 8:26-27).

성령님은 우리와 영원히 함께 하십니다.

JESUS’ PROMISE TO YOU

Jason wailed as his parents handed him over to Amy. It was the two-year-old’s first time in the nursery while Mom and Dad attended the service—and he was not happy. Amy assured them he’d be fine. She tried to soothe him with toys and books, by rocking in a chair, walking around, standing still, and talking about what fun he could have. But everything was met with bigger tears and louder cries. Then she whispered five simple words in his ear: “I will stay with you.” Peace and comfort quickly came.

Jesus offered His friends similar words of comfort during the week of His crucifixion: “The Father . . . will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth” (JOHN 14:16–17). After His resurrection He gave them this promise: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (MATTHEW 28:20). Jesus was soon to ascend to heaven, but He would send the Spirit to “stay” and live within His people.

We experience the Spirit’s comfort and peace when our tears flow. We receive His guidance when we’re wondering what to do (JOHN 14:26). He opens our eyes to understand more of God (EPHESIANS 1:17–20), and He helps us in our weakness and prays for us (ROMANS 8:26–27).

두려움으로 격리됨

2020년 코로나 바이러스의 발생으로 전 세계가 두려움에 휩싸였습니다. 사람들은 격리되었고 많은 나라들이 봉쇄 조치에 들어갔으며 항공편과 대규모 행사들이 취소되었습니다. 발병 사례가 없는 곳에 사는 사람들도 바이러스에 감염될까 두려워했습니다. 불안감에 대한 전문가인 그래함 데이비는 부정적인 뉴스가 “사람들을 더 우울하고 불안하게 만들 수 있다”고 했습니다. 소셜 미디어에 떠돌고 있는 어떤 그림에는 한 남자가 텔레비전 뉴스를 보며 어떻게 하면 걱정에서 벗어날 수 있는지를 묻습니다. 그러자 방에 있던 다른 사람이 다가와 텔레비전을 끕니다. 해답은 관심을 다른 데로 돌리는 것일 수도 있다는 것을 말하려는 것이지요!

누가복음 12장은 걱정에서 벗어날 수 있는 방법으로 “그의 나라를 구하라”(31절)고 말합니다. 하나님의 백성들에게 천국에 유업이 있다는 약속에 마음을 집중할 때 우리는 하나님 나라를 추구하게 됩니다. 어려움에 봉착할 때에는 시선을 돌려 하나님께서 우리를 보시고 우리의 필요를 아신다는 것을 기억하면 됩니다(24-30절).

예수님은 제자들에게 “적은 무리여 무서워 말라 너희 아버지께서 그 나라를 너희에게 주시기를 기뻐하시느니라”(32절)고 말씀하시며 용기를 주셨습니다. 하나님은 우리를 축복하기를 즐겨하십니다! 하나님을 경배합시다. 하나님은 우리를 공중의 새와 들의 꽃보다 더 돌보시는 분이십니다(22-29절). 어려운 때에도 우리는 성경을 읽고, 하나님의 평안을 간구하며, 선하시고 신실하신 우리 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

QUARANTINED BY FEAR

In 2020, an outbreak of the coronavirus left the world in fear. People were quarantined, countries were put under lockdown, flights and large events were canceled. Those living in areas with no known cases still feared they might get the virus. Graham Davey, an expert in anxiety, believes that negative news broadcasts are “likely to make you sadder and more anxious.” A meme that circulated on social media showed a man watching the news on TV, and he asked how to stop worrying. In response, another person in the room reached over and flipped off the TV, suggesting that the answer might be a shift in focus!

Luke 12 gives us some advice to help us stop worrying: “Seek his kingdom” (V. 31). We seek God’s kingdom when we focus on the promise that His followers have an inheritance in heaven. When we face difficulty, we can shift our focus and remember that God sees us and knows our needs (VV. 24–30).

Jesus encourages His disciples: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom” (V. 32). God enjoys blessing us! Let’s worship Him, knowing He cares for us more than the birds of the air and the flowers of the field (VV. 22–29). Even in difficult times, we can read the Scriptures, pray for God’s peace, and trust in our good and faithful God. JULIE SCHWAB

굳은 땅과 부드러운 자비

하나님의 부드러운 자비는 감히 측량할 수 없으며, 예상치 못한 곳에서 우리에게 나타납니다. 계속 찾아보십시오! 어쩌면 오늘 발견하게 될지도 모릅니다.

HARD GROUND AND TENDER MERCY

When James was just six years old, his older brother David died tragically in an ice-skating accident. It was the day before David’s fourteenth birthday. In the years that followed, James tried his best to console his mother, Margaret, who in her deep grief sometimes reminded herself that her elder son would never have to face the challenges of growing up. In James Barrie’s fertile imagination, decades later that same idea would burgeon into inspiration for a much-loved children’s story character who never aged: Peter Pan. Like a flower pushing its way through pavement, good emerged even from the hard ground of unthinkable heartache.

How comforting is the thought that God, in an infinitely more creative way, is able to bring good out of our most difficult circumstances. A beautiful illustration of this occurs in the Old Testament story of Ruth. Naomi lost her two sons, leaving her without means or support. Her widowed daughter-in-law Ruth chose to remain with Naomi to help provide for her and to serve her God (RUTH 1:16). In the end, God’s provision brought them unexpected joy. Ruth remarried and had a child, “and they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David” (4:17). He would also be listed among the ancestors of Jesus (MATTHEW 1:5).

God’s tender mercy reaches beyond our ability to fathom and meets us in surprising places. Keep looking! Perhaps you’ll see it today. JAMES BANKS

창문

히말라야 산간 지역을 방문한 한 남자는 그곳에 한 줄로 들어선 집들에 창문이 없다는 것을 발견했습니다. 안내인의 설명에 따르면 어떤 마을 사람들은 자는 동안에 악한 영이 집으로 들어올 것을 두려워하여 침투할 수 없는 벽을 만들었다고 하였습니다. 벽에 창문을 내어 빛이 들어오게 한 집이 있다면 그 집 주인이 예수님을 믿기 시작했다는 것을 알 수 있다고 합니다.

우리 안에도 꼭 그런 식은 아니라도 이와 비슷한 현상이 일어날 수 있습니다. 우리는 두려움과 분열의 시대에 살고 있습니다. 사탄과 그의 부하 마귀들은 분노를 일으켜 가족과 친구들을 분열시킵니다. 나는 내가 세운 벽 뒤로 숨고 싶을 때가 많습니다. 그러나 예수님은 거기에 창문을 내라고 하십니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 성벽을 더 높이 쌓아 피난처로 삼았지만, 하나님은 그들의 안위가 하나님께 달려 있다고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 하늘에서 통치하시고, 그분의 말씀은 모든 것을 다스리십니다(이사야 55:10-11). 이스라엘이 하나님께로 돌아온다면 하나님은 그들을 “긍휼히 여기시고”(7절), 그들을 하나님의 백성으로 회복시켜 세상을 복되게 하시고(창세기 12:1-3), 훗날 그들을 높여 궁극적으로 승리의 행진을 하게 하실 것이었습니다. “이것이 여호와의 기념이 되며 영영한 표징이 되어 끊어지지 아니하리라”(이사야 55:13).

때로는 벽이 필요합니다. 하지만 창문이 있는 벽이 가장 좋습니다. 창문은 우리의 미래를 하나님께 맡긴다는 것을 세상에 보여줍니다. 우리의 두려움은 현실입니다. 그러나 우리 하나님은 그보다 더 크신 분이십니다. 창문은 우리로 “세상의 빛”(요한복음 8:12)이신 예수님에게, 그리고 주님이 필요한 이웃에게 향하게 해줍니다.

WINDOWS

Near the foothills of the Himalayas, a visitor noticed a row of houses without windows. His guide explained that some of the villagers feared that demons might sneak into their homes while they slept, so they built impermeable walls. You could tell when a homeowner began to follow Jesus because he put in windows to let in the light.

A similar dynamic may take place in us, though we might not see it quite that way. We live in scary, polarizing times. Satan and his demons instigate angry divisions that split families and friends. I often feel like hiding behind my walls. But Jesus wants me to cut in a window.

Israel sought refuge in higher walls, but God said their security lay with Him. He reigns from heaven, and His word governs all (ISAIAH 55:10–11). If Israel would return to Him, God would “have mercy on them” (V. 7) and restore them as His people to bless the world (GENESIS 12:1–3). He would lift them up, ultimately leading them in a triumphal parade. Their celebration “will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever” (ISAIAH 55:13).

Sometimes walls are necessary. Walls with windows are best. They show the world that we trust God for the future. Our fears are real. Our God is greater. Windows open us to Jesus—“the light of the world” (JOHN 8:12)—and to others who need Him. MIKE WITTMER

자비를 베풀라

비타는 르완다 집단 학살 당시 그녀의 남편과 자녀들을 살해한 마나세라는 남자를 용서한 일에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 용서할 수 있었던 것은 예수님이 하신 일 때문입니다. 예수님은 역사의 모든 인간의 죄에 대한 형벌을 대신 지셨습니다. 오직 그분의 십자가만이 참 승리입니다!” 마나세는 감옥에서 비타에게 쓴 몇 번의 편지에서, 떨쳐지지 않는 괴로운 악몽에 대해 자세히 이야기하며 그녀와 하나님께 용서를 구했습니다. 그녀는 처음엔 자기의 가족을 죽인 그를 증오한다고 하며 용서할 수가 없었습니다. 그러나 그때 “예수님께서 그녀의 생각에 개입하셨고” 2년쯤 지나 그녀는 하나님의 도움으로 마나세를 용서할 수 있었습니다.

이 이야기의 비타는 예수님께서 제자들에게 회개하는 사람들을 용서하라고 명하신 것을 그대로 따랐습니다. 주님은 “만일 하루에 일곱 번이라도 네게 죄를 짓고 일곱 번 네게 돌아와 내가 회개하노라 하거든 너는 용서하라”(누가복음 17:4)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하지만 제자들이 “우리에게 믿음을 더하소서”(5절) 라고 대답했던 것처럼 용서란 참으로 어려운 것임을 알 수 있습니다.

비타는 용서할 수 없는 자신의 모습을 놓고 기도로 씨름하면서 믿음이 성장했습니다. 그녀처럼 우리도 용서하는 일을 놓고 씨름하고 있다면, 용서할 수 있게 도와 달라고 성령님을 통해 하나님께 간구할 수 있습니다. 그러면 우리의 믿음이 자라면서 하나님이 용서할 수 있게 도와주십니다.

EXTENDING MERCY

Reflecting on how she forgave Manasseh, the man who killed her husband and some of her children in the Rwandan genocide, Beata said, “My forgiving is based on what Jesus did. He took the punishment for every evil act throughout all time. His cross is the place we find victory—the only place!” Manasseh had written to Beata from prison more than once, begging her—and God—for forgiveness as he detailed the regular nightmares that plagued him. At first she could extend no mercy, saying she hated him for killing her family. But then “Jesus intruded into her thoughts,” and with God’s help, some two years later, she forgave him.

In this, Beata followed Jesus’ instruction to His disciples to forgive those who repent. He said that even if they “sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them” (LUKE 17:4). But to forgive can be extremely difficult, as we see by the disciples’ reaction: “Increase our faith!” (V. 5).

Beata’s faith increased as she wrestled in prayer over her inability to forgive. If, like her, we’re struggling to forgive, we can ask God through His Holy Spirit to help us to do so. As our faith increases, He helps us to forgive. AMY BOUCHER PYE

무거운 짐 들어주기

중학교 교사인 카렌은 학생들이 서로를 더 잘 이해할 수 있게 가르치기 위해 한 과외활동을 만들었습니다. 학생들은 “짐 들어주기 과외활동” 에서 자신들에게 있는 힘든 감정 몇 가지를 종이에 적으면, 이 메모를 익명으로 공유하면서 서로의 어려움에 대해 알게 되고 때론 눈물을 흘리며 반응하기도 했습니다. 그 이후로 교실에는 어린 십대 청소년들 사이에 서로를 존중하는 깊은 배려심이 가득하게 되었고, 이제는 서로에 대한 더 깊은 공감대를 이루고 있습니다.

성경 전체를 통해 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 서로 존귀하게 대하고, 다른 사람들과의 관계에서 공감하는 모습을 보이라고 권고하셨습니다(로마서 12:15). 이스라엘 역사에서 일찍이 레위기 시대부터 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 공감하는 모습을 보이기를 강조하면서, 특히 외국인 나그네를 대할 때 그렇게 하라고 하셨습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들도 애굽 땅에서 외국인이었고 그 고통을 잘 알기 때문에 “외국인 나그네를......너희의 몸과 같이 사랑하여라” 고 말씀하신 것입니다(레위기 19:34, 새번역).

우리는 가까운 사람들과 같이 살면서도 때로는 삶의 버거운 짐 때문에 외롭고 이해받지 못하는 나그네처럼 느낄 때가 있습니다. 우리의 경우, 이스라엘 백성들이 그 나라에 사는 외국인 나그네들과의 사이에서 체험한 것과 다를 수 있겠지만, 우리는 언제나 우리 스스로 받기 원하는 존중과 이해심으로 하나님께서 우리 삶에 보내주신 사람들을 대할 수 있습니다. 우리가 오늘날의 중학생이든, 이스라엘 백성이든, 그 외 누구이든, 그렇게 살 때 그것이 하나님을 높이는 것입니다.

THE BAGGAGE ACTIVITY

Karen, a middle school teacher, created an activity to teach her students how to better understand one another. In “The Baggage Activity” students wrote down some of the emotional weights they were carrying. The notes were shared anonymously, giving the students insight into each other’s hardships, often with a tearful response from their peers. The classroom has since been filled with a deeper sense of mutual respect among the young teens, who now have a greater sense of empathy for one another.

Throughout the Bible, God has nudged His people to treat one another with dignity and show empathy in their interaction with others (ROMANS 12:15). As early in the history of Israel as the book of Leviticus, God pointed the Israelites toward empathy—especially in their dealings with foreigners. He said to “love them as [themselves]” because they too had been foreigners in Egypt and knew that hardship intimately (LEVITICUS 19:34).

Sometimes the burdens we carry make us feel like foreigners— alone and misunderstood—even among our peers. We don’t always have a similar experience to draw on as the Israelites did with the foreigners among them. Yet we can always treat those God puts in our paths with the respect and understanding that we, ourselves, desire. Whether a modern-day middle schooler, an Israelite, or anything in between, we honor God when we do. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

아침인 것처럼 살기

나는 비행기 여행으로 시간이 바뀔 때에는 시차 적응을 위해 여러 가지 방법을 써 봅니다. 내 생각엔 안 해본 것이 없는 것 같습니다! 한 번은 기내 식사를 내가 도착하는 곳의 시간에 맞추어 먹기로 하고, 다른 승객들과 같은 시간에 저녁을 먹지 않고 계속 영화를 보고 잠도 청했습니다. 일부러 굶는 것도 힘들었고 착륙하기 직전에 나온 아침 식사는 별로였습니다. 그러나 주변 승객들을 “불편하게 했던” 나의 방법은 ‘효과가 있었습니다.’ 내 몸의 시계를 새로운 시간대에 맞추어놓은 것입니다.

바울은 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 진정으로 주님을 나타내는 삶을 살고자 한다면 세상의 방식에서 벗어나 살아야 한다는 것을 알았습니다. 그들은 “전에는 어둠이었지만” 이제는 “빛의 자녀”로 살아야 했습니다(에베소서 5:8). 그렇다면 그것은 어떤 모습일까요? 바울은 이렇게 그림을 완성합니다. “빛의 열매는 모든 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있느니라”(9절).

LIVE LIKE IT’S MORNING

When I have to travel across time zones by air, I try various remedies to avoid jet lag. I think I’ve tried them all! On one occasion, I decided to adjust my in-flight eating to the time zone where I was heading. Instead of eating dinner with the rest of the passengers, I kept watching a movie and tried to fall asleep. The hours of elective fasting were difficult, and the breakfast that came right before we landed left much to be desired. But living “out of sorts” with those around me worked. It jolted my body clock into a new time zone.

Paul knew that if believers in Jesus were to truly reflect Him in their lives, they would need to live out of step with the world around them. They “were once darkness” but now they were to live as “children of light” (EPHESIANS 5:8). And what might that look like? Paul goes on to fill out the picture: “The fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth” (V. 9).

Sleeping through dinner may have seemed foolish to the people on my flight, but even as it’s midnight in the world, as believers, we’re called to live like it’s morning. This may provoke scorn and opposition, but in Jesus we can “walk in the way of love,” following the example of the One who “love[s] us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (V. 2). 믿음의 설탕 옷

나는 손자의 손을 잡고 서둘러 주차장을 건너 새 학기에 입을 특별한 옷을 찾았습니다. 이제 유치원에 가게 되어 ‘모든 게’ 신나는 손자의 행복한 마음을 기쁨으로 채워주고 싶었습니다. 마침 “할머니는 설탕을 많이 입힌 엄마다”라는 문구가 있는 커피 잔을 보았습니다. 설탕 옷이라면 재미있고, 반짝거리고, 기쁘다는 뜻이지요! 이것이 바로 할머니인 내가 할 일이 아닌가요? 물론 그것 말고도 많이 있지만요.

바울은 자신의 영적 아들 디모데에게 보낸 두 번째 편지에서 그의 진실한 믿음에 대해 이야기한 후, 디모데의 할머니 로이스와 어머니 유니게의 대를 잇는 유산을 기리고 있습니다(디모데후서 1:5). 믿음의 삶을 살았던 이 여인들로 말미암아 디모데도 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다. 틀림없이 로이스와 유니게는 디모데를 사랑하고 그의 필요를 공급해주었습니다. 그러나 그들은 분명 더 많은 일을 했습니다. 바울은 두 여인 안에 살아있는 믿음이 나중에 디모데 안에 사는 믿음의 근원이 되었다고 지적합니다.

할머니로서의 나의 역할에는 새 학기의 옷을 입히는 “달콤한” 것도 있지만, 정말 더 달콤한 순간은 나의 믿음을 나눌 때입니다. 그것은 치킨 너겟을 앞에 놓고 머리 숙여 기도할 때라든지, 하늘에 하나님의 예술 작품으로 천사 모양의 구름이 만들어지는 것을 볼 때라든지, 라디오에서 흘러나오는 예수님에 관한 노래를 함께 따라 부를 때입니다. 유니게와 로이스 같은 엄마와 할머니들을 본받아, 우리도 믿음으로 삶을 진정 달콤한 것으로 만들어 다른 사람들도 우리가 가진 믿음을 갖길 원하게 만듭시다.

THE FROSTING OF FAITH

Hand in hand, my grandson and I skipped across the parking lot to find a special back-to-school outfit. A preschooler now, he was excited about everything, and I was determined to ignite his happiness into joy. I’d just seen a coffee mug with the inscription, “Grandmas are moms with lots of frosting.” Frosting equals fun, glitter, joy! That’s my job description as his grandma, right? That . . . and more.

In his second letter to his spiritual son Timothy, Paul calls out his sincere faith—and then credits its lineage both to Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice (2 TIMOTHY 1:5). These women lived out their faith in such a way that Timothy also came to believe in Jesus. Surely, Lois and Eunice loved Timothy and provided for his needs. But clearly, they did more. Paul points to the faith living in them as the source of the faith later living in Timothy.

My job as a grandmother includes the “frosting” moment of a back-to-school outfit. But even more, I’m called to the frosting moments when I share my faith: Bowing our heads over chicken nuggets. Noticing angelic cloud formations in the sky as God’s works of art. Chirping along with a song about Jesus on the radio. Let’s be wooed by the example of moms and grandmas like Eunice and Lois to let our faith become the frosting in life so others will want what we have. ELISA MORGAN

지극히 작은 자를 섬김

그의 이름은 스펜서이지만 모두들 그를 “스펜스”라고 부릅니다. 그는 고등학교 때 그 주의 육상 챔피언이었고 전액 장학금을 받으며 명문 대학에 진학했습니다. 그는 현재 미국의 가장 큰 도시 중 한 곳에 살고 있으며 화학공학 분야에서 크게 인정받고 있습니다. 하지만 스펜스에게 지금까지 이룬 것 중에 가장 큰 일이 무엇인지 묻는다면, 그는 이런 것들은 하나도 언급하지 않을 것입니다. 그 대신 몇 달에 한 번씩 니카라과에 가서, 자신이 그 나라의 가장 가난한 지역 중 한 곳에서 그 시작을 도왔던 교육 프로그램의 아이들과 교사들이 어떻게 지내는지 보는 이야기를 아주 신이 나서 말할 것입니다. 그리고 그들을 섬김으로써 그의 삶이 얼마나 풍요로워졌는지에 대해서도 말해줄 것입니다.

“지극히 작은 자.” 이 구절은 일반적으로 여러 다양한 경우에 사용됩니다. 하지만 예수님은 우리가 섬겼을 때 세상 기준으로 봐서 우리에게 되갚을 것이 거의 또는 전혀 없는 사람들을 가리키는 말로 이 구절을 사용하셨습니다. 이들은 세상에서 완전히 잊히지는 않더라도, 쉽게 지나쳐버리는 남자와 여자와 아이들입니다. 그러나 예수님은 “[그들에게] 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라” (마태복음 25:40)라고 말씀하시면서, 바로 그들을 지극히 아름다운 신분으로 높여주십니다. “지극히 작은 자”를 섬기는 것은 예수님을 섬기는 것과 같다고 하신 주님의 말씀의 의미를 이해하기 위해 명문 대학의 학위가 필요하지 않습니다. 정말 필요한 것은 기꺼이 그렇게 하려는 마음입니다.

SERVING THE LEAST

His name is Spencer. But everybody calls him “Spence.” He was a state track champion in high school; then he went on to attend a prestigious university on a full academic scholarship. He lives now in one of America’s largest cities and is highly respected in the field of chemical engineering. But if you were to ask Spence his greatest achievements to date, he wouldn’t mention any of those things. He would excitedly tell you about the trips he makes to Nicaragua every few months to check in on the kids and teachers in the tutoring program he helped establish in one of the poorest areas of the country. And he’d tell you how enriched his life has been by serving them.

“The least of these.” It’s a phrase people use in a variety of ways, yet Jesus used it to describe those who, according to the world’s standards, have little or nothing to offer us in return for our service. They are the men and women and children the world often overlooks—if not forgets completely. Yet it’s exactly those people Jesus elevates to such a beautiful status by saying, “Whatever you did [for them], you did for me” (MATTHEW 25:40). You don’t have to have a degree from a prestigious university to understand Christ’s meaning: serving “the least” is the same as serving Him. All it really takes is a willing heart. JOHN BLASE

불완전한 계획

새로 지어진 지역 사회 센터의 1층에 지어진 도서관을 둘러보던 중 갑자기 머리 위로 쿵 하는 울림과 함께 방이 흔들렸습니다. 몇 분 뒤에 다시, 그리고 또다시 같은 일이 일어났습니다. 불안해하던 사서가 마침내 도서관 바로 위에 역도 연습장이 있는데 역기가 떨어질 때마다 이런 소리가 난다고 설명해주었습니다. 건축설계사와 디자이너들은 이 최첨단 시설의 여러 측면을 신중하게 계획했었지만, 도서관은 운동시설에서 떨어져 위치해야 한다는 것을 잊어버렸던 것입니다.

인생에서도 우리의 계획은 종종 어긋나고, 중요한 고려 사항을 빠뜨리기도 합니다. 우리가 세운 계획이 모든 사고나 급작스러운 상황에 대비하고 있는 것은 아닙니다. 계획을 세우면 재정의 부족이나 시간의 낭비, 건강 문제를 피하는데 도움이 되기는 하지만, 아무리 철저한 전략을 세워도 우리 삶에서 모든 문제를 없앨 수는 없습니다. 우리는 에덴동산 이후의 세계에 살고 있습니다.

하나님이 도우시면 우리는 미래를 신중히 준비하고(잠언 6:6-8) 또 어려움이 생겼을 때 잘 대처하는, 이 두 가지를 다 잘 할 수 있습니다. 우리 삶에 허락하시는 고난에는 종종 하나님의 목적이 있습니다. 우리의 인내심을 기르거나, 믿음이 자라게 하거나, 또는 단순히 그분께 가까이 오게 하려는 것일 수도 있습니다. 성경은 “사람의 마음에는 많은 계획이 있어도 오직 여호와의 뜻만이 완전히 서리라”(잠언 19:21)고 상기시켜 줍니다. 예수님께 우리의 목표와 미래에 대한 희망을 내어드릴 때, 그분은 우리 안에서 그리고 우리를 통해 이루시고자 하는 것을 보여주실 것입니다.

IMPERFECT PLANS

I was exploring a library on the bottom floor of a new community center when an overhead crash suddenly shook the room. A few minutes later it happened again, and then again. An agitated librarian finally explained that a weight-lifting area was positioned directly above the library, and the noise occurred every time someone dropped a weight. Architects and designers had carefully planned many aspects of this state-of-the-art facility, yet someone had forgotten to locate the library away from all the action.

In life as well, our plans are often flawed. We overlook important considerations. Our plans don’t always account for accidents or surprises. Although planning helps us avoid financial shortfalls, time crunches, and health issues, even the most thorough strategies can’t eliminate all problems from our lives. We live in a post-Eden world.

With God’s help, we can find the balance between prudently considering the future (PROVERBS 6:6–8) and responding to difficulties. God often has a purpose for the trouble He allows into our lives. He may use it to develop patience in us, to increase our faith, or simply to bring us closer to Him. The Bible reminds us, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (PROVERBS 19:21). As we submit our goals and hopes for the future to Jesus, He’ll show us what He wants to accomplish in us and through us. JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT
