성경이라는 큰 이야기

콜린에게 배달된 박스 안에는 프로젝트를 위해 주문한 스테인드글라스 조각들 대신 온전한 전체 창문이 들어있었습니다. 그 창문이 원래 어디 것이었는지 조사해 보니, 제2차 세계 대전 때 폭격으로부터 보호하기 위해서 교회에서 뜯어낸 것임을 알게 되었습니다. 콜린은 그 작품의 높은 수준과 그 “조각들”이 만들어내고 있는 매우 아름다운 그림에 경탄했습니다.

솔직히 말해, 족보가 나열된 성경의 장들을 읽을 때 그것들이 성경이라는 더 큰 그림에 어떻게 들어맞는지 바로 알 수 없을 때가 있습니다. 셈, 셀라, 에벨, 나홀과 데라 같은 익숙하지 않은 이름들과 그들 가족들의 계보가 반복되는 창세기 11장의 경우가 그렇습니다 (10-32절) . 이런 구절들을 만나면 대충 훑어보고, 성경의 이야기를 이해하는 나의 “창”에 더 쉽게 들어맞는 친숙한 내용이 있는 부분으로 건너뛰고 싶은 충동을 자주 느낍니다.

THE BIG STORY OF THE BIBLE

When Colin opened the box of stained-glass pieces he’d purchased, instead of finding the fragments he’d ordered for a project, he discovered intact, whole windows. He sleuthed out the windows’ origin and learned they’d been removed from a church to protect them from World War II
bombings. Colin marveled at the quality of work and how the “fragments” formed a beautiful picture.

If I’m honest, there are times when I open particular passages of the Bible—such as chapters containing lists of genealogies—and I don’t immediately see how they fit within the bigger picture of Scripture. Such is the case with Genesis 11—a chapter that contains a repetitive cadence of unfamiliar names and their families, such as Shem, Shelah, Eber, Nahor, and Terah (VV. 10–32) . I’m often tempted to gloss over these sections and skip to a part that contains something that feels familiar and fits more easily into my “window” of understanding of the Bible’s narrative.

Since “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful” (2 TIMOTHY 3:16) , the Holy Spirit can help us better understand how a fragment fits into the whole, opening our eyes to see, for example, how Shelah is related to Abram (GENESIS 11:12–26) , the ancestor of David and—more importantly—Jesus (MATTHEW 1:2, 6, 16) . He delights in surprising us with the treasure of a perfectly intact window where even the smaller parts reveal the story of God’s mission throughout the Bible.

집내부를 새롭게 단장하려고 할 때였습니다. 방에 페인트 칠을 하려고 준비하고 있던 바로 그때 주 정부가 코로나바이러스 대유행 때문에 집 수리에 필요한 여러 자재들의 판매가 곧 중지될 예정이라고 발표 했습니다. 그 발표를 듣자마자 가게로 달려가 필요한 물품들을 구입했습니다. 적절한 물품이 없으면 리모델링을 할 수 없습니다.

바울이 에베소서 4장을 쓸 때 어느 정도는 리모델링 프로젝트를 염두에 두고 있었습니다. 그러나 바울이 말했던 변화는 겉모습의 변화를 훨씬 넘어서는 것이었습니다. 우리가 예수님을 구주로 믿어 새로운 피조물이 된다고 하지만, 여전히 성령님이 하셔야 할 일이 남아 있습니다. 성령님이 “의와 진리의 거룩함” (에베소서 4:24) 을 이루기 위해서는 많은 시간과 사역이 필요합니다.

FIX UP TIME

I t was time to give the inside of our home a fresh, new look. But just as I’d begun prepping a room for painting, our state government announced it would be halting the sale of many home improvement items due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As soon as I heard the announcement, I rushed to the store and purchased the essential materials. You simply can’t remodel without the proper supplies.

Paul had a bit of a remodeling project in mind when he wrote Ephesians 4. But the changes he was talking about went far beyond superficial alterations. Even though trusting Jesus as Savior makes us a new creation, there’s still some ongoing work the Spirit needs to do. And it takes time and work for Him to accomplish “true righteousness and holiness” (EPHESIANS 4:24) .

The presence of the Spirit makes needed changes on the inside that can help us reflect Jesus in our words and actions. He helps us replace lying with speaking “truthfully” (V. 25) . He guides us to avoid sin in regard to anger (V. 26) . And He directs us to speak words that are “helpful for building others up” (V. 29) . These Spiritcontrolled actions are part of the internal change that’s manifested in things like kindness, compassion, and forgiveness (V. 32) . The Spirit works in us to enable us to imitate Jesus Himself and reflect the heart of our heavenly Father (V. 24; 5:1) .

예수님을 전하자

드와이트 무디(1837-1899)가 그리스도를 믿은 지 얼마 안 되었을 때, 이 복음전도자는 매일 하루에 적어도 한 사람에게 하나님의 복음을 전하겠다고 결심했습니다. 그러나 바쁜 날에는 가끔 그 결심을 밤늦게까지 잊어버리곤 했습니다. 어느 날 밤에는 침대에 누워서야 그 결심이 생각났습니다. 그는 밖으로 나가면서 ‘이렇게 비가 쏟아지는 날엔 아무도 없겠지.’라고 생각했습니다. 바로 그때 한 남자가 길을 걷고 있는 것이 보였습니다. 무디는 서둘러 그 사람에게 다가가서 자기 우산을 같이 써서 비를 피하지 않겠냐고 물었습니다. 그가 그러겠다고 하자 무디는 이렇게 물었습니다. “당신은 풍랑이 불어올 때 피할 피난처가 있습니까? 제가 예수님에 대해서 말씀드려도 될까요?”

무디는 주님이 우리를 죄의 결과로부터 어떻게 구해주셨는지 전할 준비가 몸에 배어 있었습니다. 그는 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들에게 하신, 하나님의 이름을 선포하고 “그 행하심을 만국 중에 선포하라”(이사야 12:4)는 지시에 순종하였습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 “그 이름이 높다 하라”는 말씀을 선포할 뿐만 아니라(4절), 하나님이 어떻게 “[그들의] 구원이 되셨는지”도 전하도록 부름을 받았습니다(2절). 여러 세기가 지난 지금, 우리도 예수님께서 육신으로 오셔서 십자가에서 돌아가시고 다시 살아나신 놀라운 일들을 전하라는 부름을 받고 있습니다.

SHARING JESUS

Shortly after Dwight Moody (1837–99) came to faith in Christ, the evangelist resolved not to let a day pass without sharing God’s good news with at least one person. On busy days, he’d sometimes forget his resolution until late. One night, he was in bed before he remembered. As he stepped outside, he thought, No one will be out in this pouring rain. Just then he saw a man walking down the street. Moody rushed over and asked to stand under his umbrella to avoid the rain. When granted permission, he asked, “Have you any shelter in the time of storm? Could I tell you about Jesus?”

Moody embodied a readiness to share how God saves us from the consequences of our sins. He obeyed God’s instructions to the Israelites to proclaim His name and “make known among the nations what he has done” (ISAIAH 12:4). Not only were God’s people called to “proclaim that his name is exalted” (V. 4), but they were also to share how He had “become [their] salvation” (V. 2). Centuries later, our call remains to tell the wonders of Jesus becoming a man, dying on the cross, and rising again.

Perhaps we heard about God’s love when, as Moody did, someone left their comfort zone to talk with us about Jesus. And we too, each in our own way, can let someone know about the One who saves. AMY BOUCHER PYE

자비와 은혜

외로이 길게 뻗은 국도 한가운데, 그것도 추월차선에서 불과 몇 피트 떨어지지 않은 곳에 해바라기 하나가 위풍당당하게 서 있었습니다. 나는 그 곁을 지나가며 몇 마일에 걸쳐 해바라기라고는 전혀 보이지 않았는데 어떻게 거기서 그 꽃이 자랐는지 궁금했습니다. 중앙분리대의 회색 자갈 틈새에서 도로에 아주 가까이서 잘 자랄 수 있는 강한 식물은 오직 하나님만이 만드실 수 있습니다. 해바라기는 그곳에서 잘 자라 산들바람에 부드럽게 흔들리면서, 바쁘게 지나가는 여행자들을 기분 좋게 맞아주었습니다.

구약성경에는 유다 왕국에 불현듯 나타난 한 신실한 왕의 이야기를 전해줍니다. 그의 아버지와 할아버지는 다른 신들을 섬기기에 열중했지만, 요시야는 왕위에 오른 지 8년 후 그가 “아직도 어렸을 때 그의 조상 다윗의 하나님을 비로소 찾았습니다”(역대하 34:3). 그는 “하나님 여호와의 전을 수리하려”(8절) 일꾼들을 보냈는데, 그들이 수리하던 중에 율법서(구약의 첫 다섯 권, 14절)를 발견하였습니다. 하나님은 요시야에게 감동을 주셔서 온 유다 왕국을 이끌어 그 선조들의 믿음으로 돌아가게 하셨고, 그들은 “요시야가 사는 날에”(33절) 하나님을 섬겼습니다.

MERCY AND GRACE

A stately sunflower stood on its own in the center of a lonely stretch of national highway, just a few feet from the fast lane. As I drove past, I wondered how it had grown there with no other sunflowers visible for miles. Only God could create a plant so hardy it could thrive so close to the roadway in the gray gravel lining the median. There it was, thriving, swaying gently in the breeze and cheerfully greeting travelers as they hurried by.

The Old Testament tells the story of a faithful king of Judah who also showed up unexpectedly. His father and grandfather had enthusiastically served other gods; but after Josiah had been in power for eight years, “while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David” (2 CHRONICLES 34:3). He sent workmen to “repair the temple of the Lord” (V. 8), and as they did they discovered the Book of the Law (the first five books of the Old Testament; V. 14). God then inspired Josiah to lead the entire nation of Judah to return to the faith of their ancestors, and they served the Lord “as long as [Josiah] lived” (V. 33).

Our God is the master of unanticipated mercies. He’s able to cause great good to spring up unexpectedly out of the hard gravel of life’s most unfavorable circumstances. Watch Him closely. He may do it again today. JAMES BANKS

고대 로마에는 그 나름대로 좋은 소식을 의미하는 “복음”이 있었습니다. 시인 베르길리우스에 따르면, 신들의 왕인 제우스는 로마인들을 위해 끝이나 경계가 없는 왕국을 선포하고, 신들은 아우구스투스를 평화와 번영의 황금기를 여는 신의 아들이자 세상의 구원자로 선택했습니다.

그러나 이것이 모든 사람들이 생각하는 좋은 소식은 아니었습니다. 많은 사람들에게 그것은 황제의 군대와 집행관들의 압제에 의해 강요된 달갑지 않은 현실이었습니다. 로마 제국의 영광은 인간으로서의 법적 권리나 재산도 없이 자신들을 지배하는 주인의 뜻에 따라 일해야 했던 노예들의 강제노동을 통해 세워졌습니다.

THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL

Ancient Rome had its own version of “the gospel”—the good news. According to the poet Virgil, Zeus, king of the gods, had decreed for the Romans a kingdom without end or boundaries. The gods had chosen Augustus as divine son and savior of the world by ushering in a golden age of peace and prosperity.

This, however, wasn’t everyone’s idea of good news. For many it was an unwelcome reality enforced by the heavy hand of the emperor’s army and executioners. The glory of the empire was built on the backs of enslaved people who served without legal personhood or property at the pleasure of masters who ruled over them.

This was the world in which Paul introduced himself as a servant of Christ (ROMANS 1:1). Jesus—how Paul had once hated that name. And how Jesus Himself had suffered for admitting to being the king of the Jews and Savior of the world.

This was the good news Paul would explain in the rest of his letter to the Romans. This gospel was “the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (V. 16). Oh, how it was needed by those who suffered under Caesar! Here was the news of a crucified and resurrected Savior—the liberator who conquered His enemies by showing how much He loved them. 멋진 결말

남편과 아들이 영화를 보려고 텔레비전 채널을 돌리다가 좋아하는 영화들이 이미 나오고 있는 것을 알았습니다. 그들은 영화의 마지막 장면을 보는 것을 즐겼기 때문에, 게임을 하듯 영화를 검색하여 좋아하는 영화 여덟 편을 찾아냈습니다. 나는 어이가 없어서, 왜 맨 처음부터 볼 영화를 선택하지 않는지 물어보았습니다. 남편이 웃으며 말했습니다. “멋진 결말을 보는 게 제일 좋지 않아?”

나도 좋아하는 책이나 영화의 결말을 보고 싶어 한다는 것을 인정하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 심지어 성경도 쭉 훑어보고 나서, 내가 좋아하는 부분이나 내 기호에 더 맞고 이해하기 쉬운 이야기에 집중했습니다. 그러나 성령님은 우리를 변화시키고 예수님을 믿는 자들에게 주님의 이야기가 좋은 결말로 끝난다는 것을 확신시키기 위해, 하나님의 모든 신뢰할 수 있고 삶에 적용할 수 있는 말씀들을 사용하십니다.

그리스도께서는 스스로를 “알파와 오메가요 처음과 마지막이요 시작과 마침이라”(요한계시록 22:13)고 선언하십니다. 주님은 그의 백성들이 영생을 상속받을 것이라고 선포하시고(14절), “이 두루마리의 예언의 말씀”에 더하거나 제하려는 사람들에게 경고하십니다(18-19절).

A GREAT ENDING

My husband and son surfed television channels looking for a movie to watch and discovered that their favorite movies were already in progress. As they enjoyed watching the final scenes, the search became a game. They managed to find eight of their favorite flicks. Frustrated, I asked why they wouldn’t just choose a movie to watch from the beginning. My husband laughed. “Who doesn’t love a great ending?”

I had to admit I too look forward to the endings of my favorite books or movies. I’ve even skimmed through my Bible and focused on my favorite parts or the stories that seem more palatable and easier to understand. But the Holy Spirit uses all of God’s reliable and life-applicable words to transform us and affirm that His story will end well for believers in Jesus.

Christ declares Himself to be “the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (REVELATION 22:13). He proclaims that His people will inherit eternal life (V. 14) and warns those who dare to add or subtract from “the words of the prophecy of this scroll” (VV. 18–19).

We may not know or understand everything in the Bible, but we do know Jesus is coming again. He’ll keep His word. He’ll demolish sin, right every wrong, make all things new, and reign as our loving King forever. Now, that’s a great ending that leads to our new beginning! XOCHITL DIXON

궁극의 치유자

식구 중 하나가 심한 음식 알레르기로 고생하다가 한가지 치료법을 만나 낫게 되었습니다. 나는 너무나 좋아서 만나는 사람마다 그 이야기를 했습니다. 복잡한 치료 원리도 설명해주고 프로그램을 만든 의사를 대단한 분이라고 알렸습니다. 마침내 친구들이 말했습니다. “우리 생각에 치유는 다 하나님이 하시는 거야.” 나는 친구들의 말을 듣고 잠시 생각해 보았습니다. 내가 궁극의 치유자이신 하나님은 보지 않고 의술을 우상처럼 받든 게 아닌가?

이스라엘 민족도 하나님께서 그들을 치유하기 위해 쓰셨던 놋뱀에게 향을 피우기 시작하면서 이와 비슷한 함정에 빠졌습니다. 그들은 히스기야가 그 행위를 우상숭배로 단정하고 “모세가 만든 놋뱀을 부셔버릴”(열왕기하 18:4) 때까지 계속했습니다.

THE ULTIMATE HEALER

When a medical treatment began to provide relief for a family member’s severe food allergies, I became so excited that I talked about it all the time. I described the intense process and extolled the doctor who had created the program. Finally, some friends commented, “We think God should always get the credit for healing.” Their statement made me pause. Had I taken my eyes off the Ultimate Healer and made the healing into an idol?

The nation of Israel fell into a similar trap when they began to burn incense to a bronze snake which God had used to heal them. They’d been performing this act of worship until Hezekiah identified it as idolatry and “broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made” (2 KINGS 18:4).

Several centuries earlier, a group of venomous snakes had invaded the Israelite camp. The snakes bit the people and many died (NUMBERS 21:6). Although spiritual rebellion had caused the problem, the people cried out to God for help. Showing mercy, He directed Moses to sculpt a bronze snake, fasten it to a pole, and hold it up for everyone to see. When the people looked at it, they were healed (VV. 4–9).

Think of God’s gifts to you. Have any of them become objects of praise instead of evidence of His mercy and grace? Only our holy God—the source of every good gift (JAMES 1:17)—is worthy of worship. JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

경고에 귀 기울임

다른 나라에서 휴가를 보내던 중 소지품을 소매치기 당할 뻔했는데 크게 놀라지는 않았습니다. 그전에 지하철에서 절도의 위험에 대한 경고를 읽었기 때문에 지갑을 어떻게 지켜야 하는지 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 그런 일이 실제로 일어나리라고는 전혀 예상치 못했습니다.

다행히 내 지갑을 손에 쥔 젊은 남자가 지갑을 놓쳐 바닥에 떨어뜨리는 바람에 나는 그것을 되찾을 수 있었습니다. 하지만 그 일은 내가 그 경고에 유념했어야 했다는 것을 일깨워 주었습니다.

경고를 마음에 담아두기를 싫어하는 것은 즐겁게 사는데 방해가 된다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 그러나 경고는 반드시 주의를 기울여야 합니다. 예를 들어 예수님은 제자들을 보내어 천국이 가까이 왔다(마태복음 10:7)고 선포하게 하실 때 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 시인하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 시인할 것이요 누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 부인하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 부인하리라”(32-33절).

선택이 우리 앞에 놓여 있습니다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑하셔서 구주를 보내시고, 또 영원히 그분과 함께 지낼 수 있는 계획을 마련하셨습니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님에게서 돌아서서 구원의 메시지와 주님이 주시는 지금부터 영원에 이르는 진정한 삶을 거부한다면, 하나님과 함께할 수 있는 기회를 놓치게 됩니다.

우리를 만드시고 사랑하시는 분과 영원히 떨어지지 않게 하려고 우리를 구원하러 오신 예수님을 믿기를 바랍니다.

HEEDING THE WARNINGS

When a pickpocket tried to pilfer my property while I was on vacation in another country, it wasn’t a surprise. I’d read warnings about the danger of subway thieves, so I knew what to do to protect my wallet. But I never expected it to happen.

Fortunately, the young man who grabbed my wallet had slippery fingers, so it fell to the floor where I could retrieve it. But the incident reminded me that I should have heeded the warnings.

We don’t like to dwell on warnings because we think they’ll get in the way of enjoying life, but it’s imperative to pay attention to them. For instance, Jesus gave us a clear warning while sending out His disciples to proclaim God’s coming kingdom (MATTHEW 10:7). He said, “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven” (VV. 32–33).

We have a choice. In love, God provided a Savior and a plan for us to be in His presence for eternity. But if we turn away from God and choose to reject His message of salvation and the real life He offers for both now and forever, we lose out on the opportunity to be with Him.

May we trust in Jesus, the One who chose to save us from being eternally separated from the One who loves and made us. DAVE BRANON

두 여성이 복도를 가운데 두고 자리를 잡고 앉아있었습니다. 두 시간의 비행시간 동안 나는 어쩔 수 없이 그들이 주고받는 행동을 보게 되었습니다. 그들이 서로 아는 사이라는 것은 분명했는데, 친인척 같기도 했습니다. 둘 중 더 젊어 보이는(아마도 60대) 여성이 나이가 더 많아 보이는(90대로 짐작되는) 여성에게 계속해서 자기 가방에서 신선한 사과 조각을 꺼내어 건네주고, 그다음에 집에서 만든 작은 샌드위치, 그리고 닦을 수 있는 휴지, 마지막으로 갓 나온 뉴욕타임스 신문을 건네주었습니다. 건네줄 때마다 거기에는 부드러움과 품위가 배어 있었습니다. 비행기에서 내리려고 자리에서 일어났을 때 나는 그들 중 젊어 보이는 여성에게 말했습니다. “저 나이 드신 분을 돌보는 것을 보았습니다. 보기에 정말 아름다웠습니다.” 그 여성이 대답했습니다. “저의 가장 친한 친구예요. 제 어머니랍니다.”

우리 모두가 이렇게 말할 수 있다면 얼마나 멋진 일일까요? 어떤 부모는 가장 친한 친구 같습니다. 하지만 어떤 부모는 전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 부모와의 관계는 아무리 좋아도 언제나 복잡한 것이 사실입니다. 바울은 디모데에게 보내는 편지에서 관계의 복잡함을 인정하면서도 우리에게 부모와 조부모, 나아가 “친척”과 “집안”을 돌봄으로써 “경건을 실천하라”고 요구합니다 (디모데전서 5:4, 8).

우리는 가족들이 과거에 우리에게 잘해 주었거나 지금 잘해 주는 경우에만 돌보는 경우가 너무나 많습니다. 다시 말해 받을 자격이 있는 사람만 돌본다는 것입니다. 그러나 바울은 우리가 그들에게 보답해야 할 더 아름다운 이유를 보여줍니다. 그들을 돌보는 이유는 “이것이 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 일”(4절, 현대인의 성경)이기 때문입니다.

A GOOD REASON

The two women occupied the aisle seats across from each other. The flight was two hours, so I couldn’t help but see some of their interactions. It was clear they knew each other, might even be related. The younger of the two (probably in her sixties) kept reaching in her bag to hand the older (I’d guess in her nineties) fresh apple slices, then homemade finger sandwiches, then a towelette for clean up, and finally a crisp copy of the New York Times. Each hand-off was done with such tenderness, such dignity. As we stood to exit the plane, I told the younger woman, “I noticed the way you cared for her. It was beautiful.” She replied, “She’s my best friend. She’s my mother.”

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all say something like that? Some parents are like best friends. Some parents are nothing like that. The truth is those relationships are always complicated at best. While Paul’s letter to Timothy doesn’t ignore that complexity, it still calls us to put our “religion into practice” by taking care of parents and grandparents—our “relatives,” our “own household” (1 TIMOTHY 5:4, 8).

We all too often practice such care only if family members were or are good to us. In other words, if they deserve it. But Paul offers up a more beautiful reason to repay them. Take care of them because “this is pleasing to God” (V. 4). JOHN BLASE

하나님의 공급하심

우리는 중국 윈난성에서 숲속으로 점점 더 깊이 들어가면서 마을로부터 점점 더 멀리 도보여행을 했습니다. 한 시간 정도 지나자 귀가 안 들릴 정도로 우렁찬 물소리가 들렸습니다. 발걸음을 재촉해 나아가니 곧 숲속의 어느 탁 트인 공간이 나오면서 회색 바위 위로 떨어지는 하얀 물 커튼의 아름다운 광경을 보게 되었습니다. ‘장관이었습니다!’

우리가 한 시간 전에 떠났던 동네에 사는 함께 갔던 동료들이 야유회를 갖자고 했습니다. 좋은 생각이었지만 음식이 없었습니다. 우리는 아무것도 가져오지 않았던 것입니다. 그런데 친구들이 인근 숲으로 사라지더니 여러 가지 과일과 채소, 그리고 물고기까지 잡아 돌아왔습니다. 작은 보라색 꽃이 달린 ‘슈이샹카이’라는 채소는 이상해 보였지만, 그 맛은 천상의 맛이었습니다!

나는 창조세계는 하나님이 넘치게 공급하심을 드러낸다는 말이 기억났습니다. 우리는 “각기 종류대로 씨 맺는 채소와 각기 종류대로 씨 가진 열매 맺는 나무”(창세기 1:12)에서 넉넉히 주시는 하나님의 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님은 “씨 맺는 모든 채소와 씨 가진 열매 맺는 모든 나무를” 만드시고 우리에게 음식으로 주셨습니다(29절).

때때로 당신의 필요를 충족시켜 주시는 하나님을 믿기 어려울 때가 있습니까? 자연 속을 걸어보십시오. 거기서 눈에 보이는 세계를 통해 예수님이 하신 확신의 말씀을 생각해 보십시오. “염려하여 이르기를 무엇을 먹을까 무엇을 마실까 하지 말라...... 너희 하늘 아버지께서 이 모든 것이 너희에게 있어야 할 줄을 아시느니라”(마태복음 6:31-32).

GOD’S PROVISION

We trekked deeper and deeper into the forest, venturing farther and farther away from the village at Yunnan Province, China. After an hour or so, we heard the deafening roar of the water. Quickening our steps, we soon reached a clearing and were greeted by a beautiful view of a curtain of white water cascading over the gray rocks. Spectacular!

Our hiking companions, who lived in the village we had left an hour earlier, decided that we should have a picnic. Great idea, but where was the food? We hadn’t brought any. My friends disappeared into the surrounding forest and returned with an assortment of fruits and vegetables and even some fish. The shuixiangcai looked strange with its small purple flowers, but tasted heavenly!

I was reminded that creation declares God’s extravagant provision. We can see proof of His generosity in “all sorts of seedbearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit” (GENESIS 1:12 nlt). God has made and given us for food “every seed-bearing plant . . . and every tree that has fruit with seed in it” (V. 29).

Do you sometimes find it hard to trust God to meet your needs? Why not take a walk in nature? Let what you see remind you of Jesus’ assuring words: “Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ . . . Your heavenly Father knows that you need [all these things]” (MATTHEW 6:31–32). POH FANG CHIA
