우리를 향한 노래

젊은 아빠가 남자 아기를 품에 안고 부드러운 리듬으로 노래를 부르면서 천천히 흔들어주고 있었습니다. 그런데 그 아기는 청각장애를 가지고 있어 곡조나 가사를 들을 수가 없었습니다. 하지만 그럼에도 아기 아빠는 아름답고 부드러운 사랑의 몸짓으로 아들에게 노래를 불러주었습니다. 그리고 그의 노력은 아기의 기뻐하는 미소를 보며 보상받았습니다.

이 아들과 아버지가 교감하는 이미지는 스바냐서의 말씀과 아주 많이 닮아 있습니다. 구약의 선지자 스바냐는 하나님께서 그의 딸, 곧 예루살렘 사람들을 향해 기뻐하며 노래하실 거라고 말합니다(스바냐 3:17). 하나님은 그들이 받을 형벌을 없애고 원수를 쫓아내시는 것 같이, 사랑하는 그분의 백성들을 위해 좋은 일들을 하기를 즐겨 하십니다(15절). 스바냐는 그들은 더 이상 두려워할 이유가 없으며, 대신 기뻐할 이유만 존재한다고 말합니다.

예수 그리스도의 희생으로 구원받은 하나님의 자녀인 우리는 때때로 우리를 향해 풍성한 사랑으로 노래하시는 하나님께 귀를 기울이지 못하거나 싫어할 때가 있습니다. 하나님이 우리를 흠모하는 모습은 아들이 못 듣더라도 사랑스럽게 노래를 불러준 그 젊은 아빠의 모습과 비슷합니다. 그리고 우리의 형벌까지 없애주심으로 우리에게 기뻐할 이유까지 주셨습니다. 어쩌면 우리가 좀더 귀를 귀울이려고 노력할 때 하나님의 목소리에 담긴 기쁨이 크게 울려나는 것을 들을 수 있을지 모릅니다. ‘하나님 아버지, 우리가 아버지의 사랑의 곡조를 듣고, 아버지의 팔에 안전하게 안겨 있는 것을 만끽할 수 있도록 도와주소서.’

SINGING OVER US

A young father held his baby boy in his arms, singing to him and rocking him in soothing rhythm. The baby was hearing impaired, unable to hear the melody or the words. Yet the father sang anyway, in a beautiful, tender act of love toward his son. And his efforts were rewarded with a delightful smile from his little boy.

The imagery of the father-son exchange bears a striking resemblance to the words of Zephaniah. The Old Testament prophet says that God will joyfully sing over His daughter, the people of Jerusalem (ZEPHANIAH 3:17). God enjoys doing good things for His beloved people, such as taking away their punishment and turning back their enemies (V. 15). Zephaniah says they no longer have any reason for fear and instead have cause for rejoicing.

We, as God’s children redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, sometimes are hard of hearing—unable, or perhaps unwilling, to tune our ears to the exuberant love God sings over us. His adoration of us is like that of the young father, who lovingly sang to his son despite his inability to hear. He has taken away our punishment too, giving us further reason to rejoice. Perhaps we might try to listen more closely to hear the joy ringing loudly in His voice. Father, help us to hear Your loving melody and savor being held safely in Your arms. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

자연에 주목하기

최근에 친구와 함께 내가 좋아하는 산책 장소에 갔습니다. 바람이 몰아치는 언덕을 오르고, 야생화가 피어 있는 들판을 지나 우뚝 솟은 소나무들이 많은 숲으로 간 다음, 계곡으로 내려가 잠시 휴식을 취했습니다. 구름이 우리 위에서 부드럽게 떠다니고 있었고, 가까이에 시냇물이 천천히 흐르고 있었습니다. 들리는 소리는 오직 새들의 노랫소리뿐이었습니다. 제이슨과 나는 그 모든 것을 음미하면서 15분간 조용히 그곳에 서 있었습니다.

밝혀진 바와 같이, 우리가 그날 했던 행동은 상당히 치유 효과가 있었습니다. 더비 대학교의 연구에 따르면, 잠시 멈춰 자연을 관조하는 사람들이 행복 지수가 높고 불안 지수가 낮으며, 지구 환경 보존에 더 관심이 많다고 합니다. 하지만, 숲속을 걷는 것만으로는 충분치 않습니다. 구름을 ‘바라보고’, 새들의 노랫소리를 ‘들어야’ 합니다. 중요한 것은 우리가 자연 속에 ‘있는’ 것이 아니라 자연에 ‘주목하는’ 것입니다.

자연이 주는 유익에 관한 영적인 근거가 있을까요? 바울은 하나님의 능력과 본성이 창조물에 드러난다고 했습니다(로마서 1:20). 하나님은 하나님 현존의 증거로 욥에게 바다와 하늘과 별들을 보라고 하셨습니다(욥기 38-39). 예수님은 “공중의 새”와 “들의 백합화”를 관조함으로 하나님의 돌보심을 알 수 있고 염려를 줄일 수 있다고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 6:25-30). 성경을 보면, 자연에 주목하는 것이 하나의 영적 훈련입니다.

과학자들은 자연이 우리에게 왜 그렇게 긍정적으로 영향을 미치는지 의아해합니다. 그 이유 중 하나가 어쩌면 자연에 주목함으로써 자연을 창조하시고 우리를 주목해 보시는 하나님을 어렴풋이나마 알 수 있어서 그런 것이 아닐까 합니다.

NOTICING NATURE

A friend and I recently visited a favorite walking spot of mine. Climbing a windswept hill, we crossed a field of wildflowers into a forest of towering pines, then descended into a valley where we paused a moment. Clouds floated softly above us. A stream trickled nearby. The only sounds were birdsongs. Jason and I stood there silently for fifteen minutes, taking it all in.

As it turns out, our actions that day were deeply therapeutic. According to research from the University of Derby, people who stop to contemplate nature experience higher levels of happiness,
lower levels of anxiety, and a greater desire to care for the earth. Walking through the forest isn’t enough, though. You have to watch the clouds, listen to the birds. The key isn’t being in nature, but noticing it.

Could there be a spiritual reason for nature’s benefits? Paul said that creation reveals God’s power and nature (ROMANS 1:20). God told Job to look at the sea, sky, and stars for evidence of His presence (JOB 38–39). Jesus said that contemplating the “birds of the air” and “flowers of the field” could reveal God’s care and reduce anxiety (MATTHEW 6:25–30). In Scripture, noticing nature is a spiritual practice.

Scientists wonder why nature affects us so positively. Maybe one reason is that by noticing nature we catch a glimpse of the God who created it and who notices us. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

리즈는 남편과 함께 자녀의 입양이 법적으로 인정되었음을 증명하는 출생증명서와 여권을 받아 들고 감격의 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 이제 밀레나는 그들의 딸이요, 가족의 일원으로 영원히 남게 될 것입니다. 리즈는 그 모든 법적 절차를 생각하며, 우리가 예수님의 가족의 일원이 될 때 일어나는 “참된 변화”에 대해서도 생각해 보았습니다. 그 변화는 “우리는 이제 나면서부터 죄된 것과 상처 입은 것에 더 이상 사로잡혀 있지 않다”는 것입니다. 오히려 우리가 하나님의 자녀로 입양될 때 완전한 하나님 나라에 합법적으로 들어가게 됩니다.

바울 사도 시대에, 로마의 한 가정이 아들을 입양하면 그 아들의 법적인 신분은 완전히 바뀌었습니다. 과거에 졌던 모든 빚은 탕감 받았으며, 새로운 가족의 모든 권리와 특권을 얻게 되었습니다. 바울은 예수님을 믿는 로마의 성도들이 이 새로운 신분이 그들에게도 적용된다는 것을 이해하기를 원했습니다. 그들은 더 이상 죄와 저주에 얽매이지 않고 이제 “성령님을 따라” (로마서 8:4, 현대인의 성경) 살게 되었습니다. 성령님의 인도를 받는 사람들은 하나님의 자녀로 입양된 사람들입니다(14-15절). 그들의 법적 신분이 바뀌어 천국 시민이 된 것입니다.

LEGALLY HIS

Liz cried for joy when she and her husband received the birth certificate and passport for their child, making the adoption legally binding. Now Milena would always be their daughter, forever part of their family. As Liz pondered the legal process, she also thought of the “true exchange” that happens when we become part of Jesus’ family: “No longer are we held down by our birthright of sin and brokenness.” Rather, she continued, we enter into the fullness of God’s kingdom legally when we are adopted as His children.

In the apostle Paul’s day, if a Roman family adopted a son, his legal status would change completely. Any debts from his old life would be canceled and he would gain all of the rights and privileges of his new family. Paul wanted the Roman believers in Jesus to understand that this new status applied to them too. No longer were they bound to sin and condemnation but now they lived “according to the Spirit” (ROMANS 8:4). And those the Spirit leads are adopted as God’s children (VV. 14–15). Their legal status changed when they became citizens of heaven.

If we have received the gift of salvation, we too are God’s children, heirs of His kingdom and united with Christ. Our debts have been canceled by the gift of Jesus’ sacrifice. We no longer need to live in fear or condemnation. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

적절한 말

한두 해 전, 여러 명의 저자들이 그리스도인들은 믿음의 “언어”에 대해 새로운 안목을 가져야 한다고 촉구한 적이 있습니다. 예를 들어, 한 저자는 신학적으로 풍성한 믿음의 용어조차도 과도하게 친숙하거나 남용하여 복음의 깊이와 하나님을 향한 필요를 못 느끼게 되면 그 말들의 영향력을 잃을 수도 있다고 강조했습니다. 그는 그런 경우 처음처럼 복음을 볼 수 있을 때까지 우리의 생각을 내려놓고, 믿음의 언어를 “처음부터” 다시 배워야 할지도 모른다고 제안했습니다.

“하나님을 처음부터 말하기”를 배우라는 그 권고는 그의 삶을 헌신하여 “복음을 위하여......여러 사람에게 여러 모습이 되었던”(고린도전서 9:22-23) 바울을 생각나게 해줍니다. 바울은 예수님이 하신 일들을 어떻게 전하는지 자기가 가장 잘 안다고 결코 생각하지 않았습니다. 오히려 그는 끊임없이 기도하며, 또한 복음을 전하기에 “적절한 말”을 찾을 수 있도록 믿음의 형제들에게 자신을 위해 기도해줄 것을 간청하였습니다(에베소서 6:19).

THE RIGHT WORDS

In the past year or so, a number of authors have urged believers to take a fresh look at the “vocabulary” of our faith. One writer, for example, emphasized that even theologically rich words of faith can lose their impact when, through overfamiliarity and overuse, we lose touch with the depths of the gospel and our need for God. When that happens, he suggested, we may need to relearn the language of faith “from scratch,” letting go of our assumptions until we can see the good news for the first time.

The invitation to learn to “speak God from scratch” reminds me of Paul, who devoted his life to “[becoming] all things to all people . . . for the sake of the gospel” (1 CORINTHIANS 9:22–23). He never assumed he knew best how to communicate what Jesus had done. Instead, he relied on constant prayer and pleaded for fellow believers to pray for him as well—to help him find “the right words” (EPHESIANS 6:19 nlt) to share the good news.

The apostle also knew the need for each believer in Christ to remain humble and receptive each day to their need for deeper roots in His love (3:16–17). It’s only as we deepen our roots in God’s
love, each day becoming more aware of our dependence on His grace, that we can begin to find the right words to share the incredible news of what He’s done for us. - MONICA LA ROSE

힘들지만 소망이 넘치는

코믹 만화 ‘피넛츠’에서, 아주 진취적인 성격의 루시가 5센트에 “심리적 도움”을 제공한다는 광고를 냈습니다. 라이너스는 루시의 사무실로 찾아가 “심각한 우울증세”가 있다고 하면서 어떻게 하면 좋은지 물었습니다. 루시는 재빨리 “힘내! 이제 5센트 줘.”라고 말했습니다.

이같은 가벼운 만화를 보며 우리는 잠시 미소를 머금기도 하지만, 실제 삶 가운데 일어나는 슬픔이나 암울함은 우리를 단단히 사로잡고 있어 쉽게 떨쳐버리지 못합니다. 절망감이나 좌절감은 실제이기 때문에 때로는 전문적인 보살핌이 필요합니다.

HEAVY BUT HOPEFUL

In a Peanuts comic strip, the very enterprising character Lucy advertised “psychiatric help” for five cents. Linus found his way to her office and acknowledged his “deep feelings of depression.” When he asked her what he could do about his condition, Lucy’s quick reply was, “Snap out of it! Five cents, please.”

While such lighthearted entertainment brings a momentary smile, the sadness and gloom that can grip us when real life happens is not that easily dismissed. Feelings of hopelessness and despair are real, and sometimes professional attention is needed.

Lucy’s advice wasn’t helpful in addressing real anguish. However, the writer of Psalm 88 does offer something instructive and hopeful. A truckload of trouble had arrived at his doorstep. And so, with raw honesty, he poured out his heart to God. “I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death” (V. 3). “You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths” (V. 6). “Darkness is my closest friend” (V. 18). We hear, feel, and perhaps identify with the psalmist’s pain. Yet, that’s not all. His lament is laced with hope. “Lord, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you. May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry” ( VV. 1–2; S EE V V. 9, 1 3). Heavy things do come and practical steps such as counsel and medical care may be needed. But never abandon hope in God. - ARTHUR JACKSON

누구를 아느냐가 중요하다

2019년 초, 찰리 밴더미어가 84세의 나이로 세상을 떠났습니다. 수십 년 동안 국영 라디오 방송의 ‘어린이 성경 시간’을 진행했던 그는 많은 사람들에게 찰리 아저씨로 알려져 있습니다. 찰리 아저씨가 영원의 길로 들어서기 하루 전, 친한 친구에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “네가 ‘무엇’을 아느냐가 아니라 ‘누구’를 아느냐가 중요해. 물론, 예수 그리스도를 말하는 거지.”

임종을 맞이하면서도 찰리 아저씨는 예수님에 대해, 또 사람들이 예수님을 구주로 받아들여야 할 필요성에 대해 이야기하지 않을 수 없었습니다.

바울 사도는 예수님을 아는 것을 자신의 가장 중요한 일로 여겼습니다. “내가 모든 것을 해로 여김은 내 주 그리스도 예수를 아는 지식이 가장 고상하기 때문이라 내가 그를 위하여 모든 것을 잃어버리고 배설물로 여김은 그리스도를 얻고 그 안에서 발견되려 함이니”(빌립보서 3:8-9). 그러면 어떻게 예수님을 알 수 있을까요? “네가 만일 네 입으로 예수를 주로 시인하며 또 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 것을 네 마음으로 믿으면 구원을 받으리라” (로마서 10:9).

우리는 예수님에 관한 사실들과 교회에 대한 모든 것을 알며, 성경에도 해박한 지식을 갖출 수 있습니다. 그러나 예수님을 구주로 알 수 있는 유일한 길은 값없이 주시는 선물인 구원을 받아들이는 것입니다. 예수님이야말로 우리가 알아야만 하는 분입니다.

IT’S WHO YOU KNOW

In early 2019, Charlie VanderMeer died at the age of eighty-four. For many decades, he was known to thousands and thousands of people as Uncle Charlie, the host of the national radio broadcast Children’s Bible Hour. The day before Uncle Charlie slipped into eternity, he told a good friend, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Of course, I’m talking about Jesus Christ.”

Even as he faced the end of his life, Uncle Charlie couldn’t help but talk about Jesus and the necessity for people to receive Him as their Savior.

The apostle Paul considered knowing Jesus his most important task: “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him” (PHILIPPIANS 3:8–9). And how do we know Jesus? “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (ROMANS 10:9).

We may know facts about Jesus, we may know all about the church, and we may even be familiar with the Bible. But the only way to know Jesus as Savior is to accept His free gift of salvation. He’s the Who we need to know. - DAVE BRANON

불 속에서도

지치고 불에 거슬린 소방관 두 명이 아침을 먹으러 식당에 들렀을 때, 종업원은 뉴스에서 본 그 남자들을 알아보고 그들이 밤새 창고 화재와 싸운 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그녀는 감사를 표하고자 계산서에 이렇게 썼습니다. “아침식사는 제가 지불했습니다. 남들은 다 도망쳐 나오는 곳으로 도리어 뛰어들어 사람들을 섬겨 주심에 감사드립니다. 불과 맞설 준비가 되어 용기 있게 움직이는 당신들은 진정한 귀감이십니다.”

구약에서 우리는 사드락과 메삭, 아벳느고, 이 세 청년의 행동에서 용기의 예시를 보게 됩니다(다니엘 3). 바벨론 왕의 신상에 절하라는 명령에 복종하는 대신, 이 세 청년은 그것을 거부함으로써 용기 있게 하나님을 향한 그들의 사랑을 보여주었습니다. 그에 대한 형벌로 그들은 뜨겁게 타는 용광로에 던져지게 되었습니다. 그러나 그들은 물러서지 않았습니다. “만일 우리가 뜨겁게 타는 용광로 속에 던져진다고 해도 우리가 섬기는 하나님은 우리를 그 용광로에서 구해 내실 수 있습니다. 그리고 그분은 반드시 우리를 왕의 손에서 건져내실 것입니다. 비록 하나님이 우리를 구해내지 않으실지라도 우리는 왕의 신들을 섬기지 않을 것이며......금신상에게 절하지도 않을 것입니다”(17-18절, 현대인의 성경).

하나님은 그들을 구원해 주셨고, 불길 가운데서 그들과 함께 걸으시기까지 하셨습니다(25-27절). 오늘날 우리의 불같은 시련과 고난 속에서, 우리도 하나님께서 우리와 함께 하신다는 확신을 가져야 합니다. 하나님은 능력 있는 분이십니다.

FUELED BY FIRE

When two firefighters, weary and sooty, stopped at a restaurant for breakfast, the waitress recognized the men from the news and realized they’d spent the night battling a warehouse fire. To show her appreciation, she wrote a note on their bill, “Your breakfast is on me today. Thank you . . . for serving others and for running into the places everyone else runs away from. . . . Fueled by fire and driven by courage, what an example you are.”

In the Old Testament, we see an example of courage in the actions of three young men: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (DANIEL 3). Instead of obeying the mandate to bow down to a statue of the Babylonian king, these young men courageously showed their love for God through their refusal. Their penalty was to be thrown into a blazing furnace. Yet the men didn’t back down: “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not . . . we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold” (VV. 17–18).

God did rescue them and even walked with them in the fire (VV. 25–27). In our fiery trials and troubles today, we too have the assurance that God is with us. He is able.- ALYSON KIEDA

사람들이 좋아하지 않을 예수님의 생각들

마이크 버든은 15년 동안 작은 마을의 자신의 기념품 가게에서 증오로 가득한 모임을 지속해 왔습니다. 그러나 2012년 그의 아내가 왜 그 모임을 하는지 묻는 질문에 그의 마음이 누그러졌습니다. 그는 자신의 인종차별주의적 관점이 얼마나 잘못되었는지를 알게 되었고, 더 이상 그런 사람이 되지 않기로 하였습니다. 그 과격 단체는 보복으로 그가 단체의 한 회원에게서 임대 받아 살던 아파트에서 그의 가족을 쫓아냈습니다.

예수님은 산상수훈에서 사람들이 좋아하지 않을 생각들을 가르치셨 습니다. “네게 구하는 자에게 주며......너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 박해하는 자를 위하여 기도하라”(마태복음 5:42, 44). 그것은 하나님이 우리더러 따르라고 요구하시는 거꾸로 된 사고방식입니다. 그것은 비록 약해 보여도, 실제로는 하나님의 능력으로부터 나오는 행동입니다.

우리를 가르치시는 그분은 그가 우리에게 원하시는 어떤 일에서도 이 거꾸로 된 삶을 살아낼 수 있도록 능력을 주시는 분이십니다.

JESUS’ UNPOPULAR IDEAS

For fifteen years, Mike Burden held hate-filled meetings in the memorabilia shop he ran in his small town. But in 2012 when his wife began to question his involvement, his heart softened. He realized how wrong his racist views were and didn’t want to be that person any longer. The militant group retaliated by kicking his family out of the apartment they’d been renting from one of the members.

Where did he turn for help? Surprisingly, he went to a local black pastor with whom he’d clashed. The pastor and his church provided housing and groceries for Mike’s family for some time. When asked why he agreed to help, Pastor Kennedy explained, “Jesus Christ did some very unpopular things. When it’s time to help, you do what God wants you to do.” Later Mike spoke at
Kennedy’s church and apologized to the black community for his part in spreading hatred.

Jesus taught some unpopular ideas in the Sermon on the Mount: “Give to the one who asks you . . . . Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (MATTHEW 5:42, 44). That’s the
upside-down way of thinking God calls us to follow. Though it looks like weakness, it’s actually acting out of God’s strength.

The One who teaches us is the One who gives the power to live out this upside-down life in whatever way He asks of us. - ANNE CETAS

보이지 않는 것

역사학자들은 원자력 시대는 1945년 7월 16일 뉴멕시코주의 외딴 사막에서 최초의 핵무기가 폭발했을 때 시작되었다고 말합니다. 하지만 그리스 철학자 데모크리투스(기원전 460-370년)는 우주를 구성하는 이런 아주 작은 물질까지 볼 수 있는 장치가 발명되기 훨씬 이전에 벌써 원자의 존재와 힘을 탐구하고 있었습니다. 데모크리투스는 그가 볼 수 있는 것보다도 더 많은 것을 이해했으며, 그 결과 원자 이론이 탄생했습니다.

성경은 믿음의 본질은 보이지 않는 것도 포괄한다고 말합니다. 히브리서 11장 1절은 “믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거”라고 단언합니다. 이 확신은 어떤 기대나 긍정적인 사고의 결과로 생긴 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 눈으로 볼 수는 없어도 우주 안에서 가장 분명한 실제로 존재하시는 하나님에 대한 확신입니다. 그분의 창조물에 드러나 있는 하나님의 실재는 (시편 19:1) 아버지의 사랑을 우리에게 보여주기 위해 오신 아들 예수님을 통해 하나님의 보이지 않는 속성과 방식이 나타남으로써(요한복음 1:18) 우리가 볼 수 있게 되었습니다.

바울 사도가 말한 것처럼, 이 하나님 안에서 “우리는 살고 움직이며 존재합니다”(사도행전 17:28, 현대인의 성경). 즉 “우리는 믿음으로 살아가지, 보는 것으로 살아가지 아니합니다”(고린도후서 5:7, 새번역). 그렇지만 우리는 홀로 걷는 것이 아닙니다. 보이지 않는 하나님이 우리가 가는 길의 모든 발자국마다 우리와 함께 걷고 계십니다.

WHAT CAN’T BE SEEN

Historians say the Atomic Age began on July 16, 1945, when the first nuclear weapon was detonated in a remote desert of New Mexico. But Greek philosopher Democritus (C. 460–370 bc) was exploring the existence and power of the atom long before the invention of anything that could even see these tiny building blocks of the universe. Democritus comprehended more than he could see and atomic theory was the result.

The Scriptures tell us that the essence of faith is embracing what can’t be seen. Hebrews 11:1 affirms, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” This assurance isn’t the result of wishful or positive thinking. It’s confidence in the God we can’t see but whose existence is the truest reality in the universe. His reality is displayed in His creative
works (PSALM 19:1) and made visible by revealing His invisible character and ways in His Son, Jesus, who came to show the Father’s love to us (JOHN 1:18).

This is the God in whom “we live and move and have our being,” as the apostle Paul put it (ACTS 17:28). As such, “we live by faith, not by sight” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:7). Yet we don’t walk alone. The unseen God walks with us every step of the way. BILL CROWDER

우리 마음 안에 거하심

때로는 아이들의 말에 자극을 받아 하나님의 진리를 더 깊이 이해하게 될 때가 있습니다. 딸이 어렸던 어느 저녁, 나는 딸에게 하나님은 예수님과 성령님을 통해 그분의 자녀들 안에 계신다는 기독교 신앙의 위대한 신비에 대해 이야기해주었습니다. 딸에게 이불을 덮어주며 예수님이 네 안에 너와 함께 계신다고 말했더니, 딸아이는 “예수님이 내 배 안에 있어?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 “음, 네가 예수님을 삼킨 적은 없지만 바로 거기에 예수님이 함께 계셔.”라고 대답해주었습니다.

딸아이가 예수님이 “배 안에” 계신다고 문자 그대로 해석하는 것을 듣고, 나는 예수님께 내 구주가 되어 주시기를 간구했을 때 어떻게 주님이 오셔서 내 안에 계시는지를 잠시 생각해보게 되었습니다.

바울 사도는 에베소의 신자들을 위해 기도할 때 이 신비에 대해 언급하였습니다. 그는 성령께서 그들을 강건하게 하여 “믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도께서 [그들] 마음에 계시”기를 위해 기도했습니다(에베소서 3:17). 그들은 그들 안에 계시는 예수님으로 말미암아 주님이 얼마나 깊이 그들을 사랑하시는지 깨달을 수 있었습니다. 그 사랑에 힘입어 그들은 사랑으로 진리를 전하면서, 동시에 믿음이 성숙해지고 겸손과 온유함으로 다른 사람을 사랑할 수 있었습니다(4:2, 25).

DWELLING IN OUR HEARTS

Sometimes the words of children can jolt us into a deeper understanding of God’s truth. One evening when my daughter was young, I told her about one of the great mysteries of the Christian faith—that God through His Son and Spirit dwells in His children. As I tucked her into bed, I said that Jesus was with her and in her. “He’s in my tummy?” she asked. “Well, you haven’t swallowed Him,” I replied. “But He’s right there with you.”

My daughter’s literal translation of Jesus being “in her tummy” made me stop and consider how when I asked Jesus to be my Savior, He came and took residence within me.

The apostle Paul referred to this mystery when he prayed that the Holy Spirit would strengthen the believers in Ephesus so that Christ would “dwell in [their] hearts through faith” (EPHESIANS 3:17). With Jesus living within, they could grasp how deeply He loved them. Fueled by this love, they would mature in their faith and love others with humility and gentleness while speaking the truth in love (4:2, 25).

Jesus dwelling inside His followers means that His love never leaves those who’ve welcomed Him into their lives. His love that surpasses knowledge (3:19) roots us to Him, helping us to understand how deeply He loves us.
