하나님의 초월적 능력

존 스트룹은 그의 책 ‘구덩이에서 강단으로’에서 자신에게 육체적, 성적, 정서적 학대로 깊은 상처를 남긴 인생의 강하고 부정적인 세력들에 대해 이야기합니다. 그는 이렇게 말합니다. “나는 자동차 운전할 나이도 되기 전에 마약을 시작했습니다... 학교를 그만두고 범죄의 길에 점점 더 깊이 빠져들기 시작했습니다.” 결국 존은 그의 범죄로 감옥에 가게 되었습니다. 5년 형기를 복역하던 중 성경이 그에게 살아있는 말씀으로 다가와 그는 하나님 앞에 엎드리게 되었습니다. 하나님의 은혜로 그는 이전에 자신을 지배했던 습관들로부터 벗어나게 되었습니다.

GOD’S SUPERIOR STRENGTH

In his book From the Pit to the Pulpit, John Stroup shares about powerful, unfriendly forces of life that battered and bruised him physically, sexually, and emotionally. He notes, “I started using drugs before I could drive a car. . . . I quit school and began to get farther and farther into the criminal lifestyle.” Eventually, John’s crimes landed him behind bars. While serving a five-year sentence, the Bible became real to him, and he was humbled before God. By God’s grace, he was liberated from habits that were previously stronger than he was.

Ancient Israel’s experience often included oppression and sometimes captivity “from the hand of those stronger than they” (JEREMIAH 31:11). Even when their predicaments were because of their own folly, God Himself exercised His mercy and might on behalf of His wayward people. Renewal—including joyful singing, abundant harvests, and celebration (VV. 12-14)—was to be expected when God exercised His superior strength for their good.

John Stroup’s life is a testimony to God’s might on behalf of those who place their faith in God’s Son, Jesus. The Gospels witness to Christ’s power to counter the ugly forces of evil in human life. And the strength and power of Jesus can be accessed today through sincere, faith-filled prayer, and heartfelt surrender for “everyone who calls” on Him (ACTS 2:21).

아름다운 결말

어느 따뜻한 저녁에 시내에서 친구들을 만났습니다. 우리는 레스토랑 바깥에서 연주하는 재즈 생음악을 들으며 식사할 수 있을 것으로 잔뜩 기대했는데 도착해 보니 바깥 자리는 이미 다 차 있었습니다. 실망스러운 마음으로 거기를 떠나 몇 블록을 걸어 다른 식당을 찾아야 했습니다.

이 세상에서는 여러가지 크고 작은 실망들이 생깁니다. 사랑하는 반려 동물이 죽기도 하고, 진로가 막히고, 건강에 문제가 생기고, 사랑하는 사람들 과의 관계를 잃기도 합니다. 그런 좌절 속에서 하나님의 위로를 얻기도 하지만 우리의 삶은 항상 바라는 대로 행복한 결말로 이어지지는 않습니다. 그러나 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게는 기쁨 가득한 영원에 대한 소망이 있습니다.

요한계시록은 하나님이 요한에게 주신 놀라운 환상을 기록하고 있습니다. 요한은 “거룩한 성 새 예루살렘”을 보았습니다(21:2). “그 준비한 것이 신부가 남편을 위하여 단장한 것 같은”(2절) 이 도성은 하나님의 영광으로 빛났습니다. 하나님께서 그의 모든 백성들과 함께 그곳에 거하실 것입니다. 하나님의 도성에는 범죄도, 어두움도, 두려움도 없을 것입니다(25-27절). 빛과 평화와 선의가 넘칠 것입니다.

친구들과 저녁을 먹으러 나갔던 그 밤, 우리는 첫 번째 레스토랑을 다시 지나가게 되었습니다. 하얀 조명이 보도를 비추고 있었고, 우리는 멈춰 서서 아이스크림을 먹으며 음악을 들었습니다. 무척 즐거운 순간이었지만, 우리는 믿는 자들이 영원히 누리게 될 궁극적인 결말은 이 세상의 어떤 기쁨과도 비교할 수 없다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

A BEAUTIFUL ENDING

On a warm evening, I met up with friends in a downtown area. We were excited to eat at a restaurant that offered live jazz music outside, but when we arrived, the patio was full. Disappointed, we left and had to walk several blocks to find another place to eat.

On earth, disappointments come in all sizes, both big and small. Beloved pets pass away. Careers fizzle. Health problems occur. We lose relationships with loved ones. In our setbacks, we have God’s comfort, but our life stories don’t always contain the blissful endings we long for. Believers in Jesus, however, have the hope of a joyful eternity.

The book of Revelation records God giving John a breathtaking vision. John saw “the Holy City, the new Jerusalem” (21:2). “Prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband” (V. 2), it radiated God’s glory. God would inhabit the place along with all His people. In His city there would be no crime, no darkness, and no fear (VV. 25-27). Light, peace, and goodwill would abound.

On the night I met my friends for dinner, we ended up walking back past the first restaurant. White lights lit the sidewalk, and we stopped to listen to the music as we ate ice cream. I savored the moment, but we know that no earthly joy can compare with the ultimate ending believers will enjoy forever.

양떼의 횡단

차량 통행이 갑자기 멈췄는데 그 이유를 알 수 없었습니다. 도로에는 차도 별로 없었고, 멈춰야 할 뚜렷한 이유도 보이지 않았습니다. 그러다가 갑자기 수천 마리의 양떼가 나타나 고속도로를 건너가는 것을 보고는 아주 놀랍고 즐거웠습니다. 아이다호에 새로 이사 온 나는 매년 봄이면 양떼가 보이즈 산기슭으로 이동한다는 것을 그때까지 잘 몰랐습니다. 현지 목축업자들은 양떼를 산자락으로 데려가 거기서 여름 내내 신선한 풀을 뜯어먹게 합니다.

도시와 교외 지역에서만 평생 살아온 나에게는 이 광경이 꽤 놀라운 구경 거리였습니다. 하지만 양은 에스겔 시대(그리고 성경에 기록된 많은 시대) 에서는 일상 생활의 한 부분이었습니다. 에스겔 선지자는 하나님의 위로와 소망의 메시지를 전달하기 위해 사람들에게 익숙한 양과 목자의 이미지를 사용했습니다.

에스겔은 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님께 거듭 반역한 결과로 바벨론에서 오랜 기간 고난을 당하고 있긴 하지만 하나님이 언젠가 그들을 “그 본토로” 데려가실 것이라고 말하며 위로와 희망의 말을 전해주었습니다(에스겔 34:13). 그리고 하나님은 목자처럼 그들에게 “좋은 꼴을 먹이고” 그들은 “좋은 우리에 누워 있게 될 것”이라 하였습니다(14절).

하나님은 자신의 모든 백성을 이렇게 돌보십니다. 우리는 때로 어려움 가운데 양 같이 “흩어진” 것처럼 느껴지더라도(12절) 우리의 목자이신 하나님께서 우리의 삶을 좋은 초장으로 이끌어 가실 것을 신뢰할 수 있습니다(13-14절).

SHEEP CROSSING

Traffic came to a halt, but I had no idea why. There were few cars on the road, and I could see no obvious reason to be stopped. And then, suddenly—to my great surprise and delight—thousands of sheep emerged and crossed the freeway. As a newcomer to Idaho, I wasn’t yet familiar with the annual migration of the sheep into the Boise foothills each spring. Local ranchers escort their flocks into the foothills, where they graze on the native grasses over the summer.

Because I’d only lived in urban and suburban areas throughout my life, the sight was something of a spectacle to me. Yet sheep were a regular part of living in the days of Ezekiel (and much of the Bible’s recorded history). The prophet drew on something familiar to the people—sheep and shepherding—to convey God’s message to them of comfort and hope.

Ezekiel offered comforting, hopeful words to the Israelites, telling them that despite the years of hardship in Babylon—the consequence of their recurrent rebellion against God—He’d one day restore them to “their own land” (EZEKIEL 34:13). God would then, like a shepherd, “tend them in a good pasture,” and they would “lie down in good grazing land” (V. 14).

God shows similar care for His people. We can trust Him, our Shepherd, to lead us forward through life—though we may feel “scattered” like sheep in the midst of difficulties (V. 12)—toward good pastures (VV. 13-14).

복이 되는 삶

오랫동안 지역 라이벌인 두 고등학교 축구팀 이글스와 파이어니어스 간의 열띤 경기 중 이글스가 골대 안으로 공을 차 넣었습니다. 공은 골대 안으로 들어갔지만 그물에 난 구멍을 통해 뒤쪽으로 빠져나갔습니다. 공이 골대 안으로 들어가는 것을 보지 못했던 심판은 공이 그물 밖에 있는 것만 보고 득점으로 인정하지 않았습니다. 골이 들어가는 것을 보았던 파이어니어스의 코치는 그냥 잠자코 있을 수도 있었지만 이글스 코치가 항의하는 것이 맞다고 스스로 나서서 확인해 주어서 결국 심판이 득점을 인정했습니다. 이렇게 해서 파이어니어스는 3대2로 경기에 지고 말았습니다.

우리에게 유리할 때 목소리 높여 주장하기는 쉽지만, 성경은 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 “서로 대하든지 모든 사람을 대하든지 항상 선을 따르라” (데살로니가전서 5:15)고 권면합니다. 이 명령의 어려운 점은 친구들에게 선을 행하는 일반적인 성향을 넘어, 우리의 행위로 어떤 유익도 얻을 수 없거나 또는 보답으로 “아무것도 바라지” 않으면서 우리의 라이벌에게까지 선을 행하는 것입니다(누가복음 6:35).

경쟁자나 라이벌에게 선을 행한다는 것은 동료 사원이 애써 노력해 판매 실적을 올려 더 큰 상여금을 받았을 때 그의 노력을 칭찬해주는 것일 수도 있습니다. 그리고 선을 행한다는 것은 이웃에게서 감사하다는 말을 듣지 않아도 그 집의 낙엽을 치워주는 것을 의미할 수도 있습니다.

우리가 적극적으로 다른 사람들에게 선을 행하려고 노력할 때 그것은 하나님의 사랑이 모든 사람에게 전해지는 것을 보여주는 것입니다.

BEING A BLESSING

During a heated game between two long-standing local high school soccer rivals, the Eagles and the Pioneers, the Eagles kicked the ball into the goal. The ball went into the net but exited the back of the net through a hole. The referee didn’t see the ball enter the goal, and seeing the ball outside the net ruled it was not a score. The Pioneers’ coach saw the goal and voluntarily confirmed the Eagles coach’s claim, even though he could have remained silent. The referee counted the goal. The Pioneers lost the game 3–2.

While it’s easy to speak up when it’s for our benefit, the Bible encourages believers in Jesus to “always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:15). Going beyond our normal inclination to do good for our friends, the difficult aspect of this command is working to do good for even our rivals without benefiting from our actions or “expecting to get anything back” in return (LUKE 6:35).

Doing good for a rival or competitor may mean speaking up for a coworker’s effort to complete a sale even if that means she might get the bigger bonus. Doing good might mean raking a neighbor’s leaves even if he’s unlikely to say thank you.

As we actively make an effort to do good toward others, we demonstrate that God’s love extends to everyone.

티셔츠에 야구 모자를 쓴 허술한 모습의 한 바이올리니스트가 워싱턴 DC의 랑팡 플라자 지하철역 근처에 자리를 잡고는 활로 현을 그으며 아름다운 선율을 연주했습니다. 그러나 출퇴근하는 사람들은 바쁘게 그냥 지나쳤습니다. 그가 한 곡을 모두 연주하는 동안 손가락으로 셀 정도의 사람들만 멈춰 서서 그의 음악을 들었습니다. 만약 수많은 사람들이 전날 밤 의회 도서관에서 연주했던 우리 시대의 가장 뛰어난 대가의 하나인 조슈아 벨을 그냥 지나쳤다는 사실을 알았다면 어땠을까요? 벨은 약 350만 달러의 가치를 지닌 1713년산 스트라디바리우스를 가지고 세계에서 가장 어렵고 매혹적인 바이올린 몇 곡을 연주한 것입니다.

하나님은 “천지에 충만하여”(예레미야 23:24) 어디에나 계십니다. 하나님은 가장 평범한 곳들에 계십니다. 그래서 우리는 눈과 귀를 계속 열고 하나님을 보고 들으라는 권고를 받고 있습니다.

GOD IS EVERYWHERE

The unassuming violinist, donning a baseball cap and T-shirt, set up near Washington, DC’s L’Enfant Plaza subway station. He moved the bow across the strings, making melodious tunes. But commuters rushed past, oblivious. He played an entire music program with only a handful of people stopping to listen. If the crowd had only known they were rushing past Joshua Bell, one of the greatest virtuosos of our generation who the night before had played at the Library of Congress. Bell played several of the most difficult, mesmerizing violin pieces in the world, all on a 1713 Stradivarius worth roughly $3.5 million.

It’s easy to be unaware, to miss wonders right in front of us. This was Jacob’s experience as he journeyed to Harran (GENESIS 28:10). He stopped and set up camp in a simple spot that seemed like any other, just a place to lay his head for the night. God appeared to him in a midnight dream, however, telling him that his numerous descendants would bless “all peoples on earth” (V. 14). He also assured Jacob that He would “watch over [him] wherever [he would] go” (V. 15). When he awoke, Jacob said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it” (V. 16).

God is everywhere, “fill[ing] heaven and earth” (JEREMIAH 23:24). He’s present in the most ordinary places. Our invitation is to keep our eyes and ears open, to watch and listen for Him. WINN COLLIER

영적 계보

몇 해 전 족보에 관한 테스트를 하고 나서 나의 조상들에 대해 더 알고 싶었는데, 어머니와 지금은 돌아가신 아버지로부터 몇몇 친척들의 이야기를 들을 수 있어서 감사했습니다. 조상들에 대한 이야기를 들으면서 내 가족의 뿌리와 연결되는 느낌을 갖게 되고 그들의 경험으로부터 배우는 데 도움이 되었습니다.

한편 우리의 영적인 뿌리에 대해 생각해 볼 때, 예수님의 이 땅에서의 족보가 마태복음 1:1-17과 누가복음 3:23-38에 기록되어 있는 것이 얼마나 큰 선물인지 모릅니다. 예수님의 족보는 예수님이 메시아이며 아브라함의 직계 후손임을 확실히 보여줍니다.

우리가 예수님의 족보를 읽어 보면 하나님이 아브라함에게 하신 약속, 곧 그를 여러 민족의 아버지가 되게 하겠다는 약속을 지키신 하나님의 신실하심을 봅니다(창세기 17:1-8). 그 약속이 이루어지고 2천 년이 지나서 마태 사도는 “아브라함의 자손이요 다윗의 자손인 예수 그리스도의 계보는 이러하다” (마태복음 1:1, 새번역)라고 기록했습니다.

성경의 족보는 예수님의 조상을 사실대로 보여줍니다. 우리는 다윗 왕 같은 왕들의 이름과 목수 요셉과 같은 평범한 사람들의 이름을 볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 마태는 거기에 다섯 명의 여인, 곧 다말, 밧세바(우리야의 아내), 라합, 룻(일부 학자들은 이들 모두 이방인이라 믿음), 그리고 마리아가 들어 있습니다.

우리를 낳아준 조상에 대한 지식과는 별개로 우리는 하나님의 가족의 일원으로서 성경 전체에 기록된 우리의 영적 조상들에 대해 배울 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님께서 그들에게 얼마나 신실하셨는지를 보면서 용기를 얻습니다.

SPIRITUAL ANCESTRY

After I took a genealogy test a few years ago, I became curious about my ancestors. I’m grateful I got to hear stories about a few relatives from my late father and from my mother. Hearing about my ancestors helps me feel connected to my family’s roots and helps me learn from their experiences.

When it comes to our spiritual roots, what a gift that Jesus’ earthly genealogy is recorded in Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38. Jesus’ genealogy establishes that He’s the Messiah and a direct descendant of Abraham.

As we read His genealogy, we see God’s faithfulness in keeping His promise to Abraham to make him the father of many nations (GENESIS 17:1-8). Two thousand years after that promise was fulfilled, the apostle Matthew wrote, “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham” (MATTHEW 1:1).

The biblical genealogy shows Jesus’ ancestry come to life. We see the names of royalty such as King David and ordinary people such as a carpenter named Joseph. And Matthew includes five women: Tamar, Bathsheba (Uriah’s wife), Rahab, Ruth (who some scholars believe were all gentiles), and Mary.

Whether or not we know much about our biological ancestors, we can—because we’re part of God’s family—learn about our spiritual ancestors throughout the Bible. We gain courage from seeing how faithful God was to them.

하나님의 마음으로 보기

샨텔의 열세 살 생일날, 조용한 고향 마을에서 즐거운 축하 시간을 보낼 때 평화로운 저녁을 깨뜨리는 총성이 울렸습니다. 숨으라는 어머니의 다급한 외침에 샨텔은 형제 자매와 함께 숲으로 뛰어들어갔습니다. 거기서 한 나무 아래 몸을 피해 밤새 웅크리고 있었습니다. “아침에 해가 떴어요. 그러나 우리 부모님은 나타나지 않았습니다.”라고 샨텔은 회상합니다. 샨텔과 형제 자매들은 이제 고아이자 난민이 되어 수만 명이 있는 난민 캠프에서 지내게 되었습니다.

우리는 샨텔의 경우와 같은 이야기를 들을 때 그런 엄청난 상실에 그냥 눈을 돌리고 싶은 마음이 들 수도 있습니다. 그러나 성경 속의 하나님을 믿는 사람들은 고통에서 결코 눈을 돌리지 않고, 깊은 관심을 가지고 “나그네들을 보호하시며 고아와 과부를 붙드시는”(시편 146:9) 하나님을 신뢰합니다.

“여호와는 천지... 를 지으시며 영원히 진실함을 지키시며”(6절), “억눌린 사람들을 위해 정의로 심판하시며 주린 자들에게 먹을 것을 주시는 이십니다” (7절).

난민 소녀들을 교육하는 기관을 설립한 샨텔 주지 대표는 자신의 경험을 통해 “어느 누구나 한때 살았던 안전한 터전을 잃고 난민이 될 수 있다”는 것을 배웠다고 말합니다.

안전한 터전을 잃은 사람들을 대하는 우리의 모습이 언제나 신실하게 “압박당하는 자의 피난처”(9:9) 되시며, “넘어진 자들을 일으키시는”(146:8, 현대인의 성경) 하나님의 마음을 보여줄 수 있기를 바랍니다.

SEEING WITH GOD’S HEART

On Chantale’s thirteenth birthday, after hours of joyful celebration in her quiet home village, gunfire shattered the peaceful evening. Chantale and her siblings ran into the forest, obeying their mother’s frantic command to hide. All night, they huddled underneath the sanctuary of a tree. “The sun appeared in the morning. But not our parents,” Chantale recounts. She and her siblings were now orphans and refugees, joining tens of thousands in a refugee camp.

When we hear stories like Chantale’s, it can be tempting to turn away from such overwhelming loss. But those who believe in the God of Scripture believe in a God who never looks away from suffering, who attentively “watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow” (PSALM 146:9).

The “Maker of heaven and earth . . . remains faithful forever” (V. 6), ever at work upholding “the cause of the oppressed” and providing “food to the hungry” (V. 7).

Chantale Zuzi Leader, who founded an organization to educate refugee girls, says her experience taught her that “anyone can become a refugee—to lose that place of safety they once had.”

May our response to those who’ve lost a place of safety reflect the heart of the God who is an ever-faithful “refuge for the oppressed” (9:9), who “lifts up those who are bowed down” (146:8).

가난한 자들을 먹여라

리사와 프레디 맥밀런은 앨라배마 주 브루튼의 한 독특한 레스토랑의 주인입니다. 그들은 줄을 선 사람들 모두에게 무료로 따뜻한 식사를 제공합니다. 이 부부는 종종 먹을 것이 없거나 레스토랑에서 식사할 일이 거의 없는 노인들을 돕기 위해 그들이 저축한 돈을 투자했습니다. 그곳에는 기부 상자가 있어서 기부금을 받고 있습니다. 리사는 말합니다. “기부 상자에 아무것도 없을 때도 있어요. 때로는 감사 편지가 들어 있고 1,000달러가 들어 있을 때도 있어요. 거기엔 언제나 우리에게 필요한 모든 것이 들어 있어요. 우리의 목표는 가난한 자들을 먹이고, 존엄성을 회복하고, 지역 사회를 발전 시키는 것입니다.”

FEED THE NEED

Lisa and Freddie McMillan own a unique restaurant in Brewton, Alabama. They offer a full hot meal to all who stand in line— at no charge. This couple has invested from their own savings to make a difference for senior citizens who often go without meals and rarely enjoy a restaurant experience. A donation box receives contributions. Lisa says, “Sometimes we find nothing there. Sometimes a thank-you note. Sometimes $1,000. Always, we have everything we need. Our goal is to feed the need, restore dignity, and develop community.”

Caring for the needy can seem a daunting task—unless we depend on God! The Gospels include records of Jesus feeding thousands by inviting His disciples to participate: “You give them something to eat” (MATTHEW 14:16). In the book of Acts, we learn that in the early church, believers “shared everything they had” and “there were no needy persons among them” (4:32, 34). Many of them sold property and gave the proceeds to the apostles, who “distributed to anyone who had need” (VV. 34-35). Understanding that their possessions ultimately belonged to God, they voluntarily invested in the lives of others from what they owned.

God provides. Sometimes by His own hand and sometimes through the hands of His people. He feeds our need so that we can feed the need of others.

그리스도께 시선을 고정하라

앤드류는 아들에게 자전거 타는 법을 가르쳐주다 맥이 풀렸습니다. 다섯 살 난 아들이 계속 한쪽으로 기울며 넘어지는 것이었습니다. 아들이 한쪽만 계속 쳐다보기 때문에 그렇게 되는 것을 알게 된 아빠에게 한 가지 방법이 떠올랐습니다. 그는 아들에게 말했습니다. “저 앞에 기둥 보이지? 그것만 계속 바라보고 페달을 밟아봐.” 아들이 그 말대로 따라 하자 이번에는 계속 앞으로 나갔습니다!

이 일은 앤드류 자신에게도 교훈이 되었습니다. 그는 나중에 소그룹 모임에서 이 이야기를 하면서 우리는 자기의 시선을 두는 그곳으로 가게 되어 있다고 말했습니다. 사실 히브리서 12장 2절에서도 우리에게 “믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자”고 말하고 있는 것입니다.

우리를 얽매는 죄의 습관과 집착들처럼(1절), 살면서 맡은 일들과 일상생활을 하면서도 우리는 우리의 영적 시선을 딴 데로 돌릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 예수님을 계속 바라보며 우리의 생각과 결정과 행동에서 예수님을 최우선에 두게 해달라고 간구하면, 예수님은 우리가 하는 모든 일과 말에서 우리를 인도하여 우리가 이 땅에 사는 동안 예수님 곁에 가까이 머무를 수 있게 하실 것입니다. 이것은 힘든 일일 수도 있지만, 하나님은 그분이 주신 역할을 다할 수 있게 우리를 도우실 것입니다. 하나님은 우리의 앞을 막는 어떤 것도 견디고 이길 수 있는 힘을 주셔서 우리를 “피곤하여 낙심하지 않게”(3절) 하실 것입니다.

EYES FIXED ON CHRIST!

Teaching his son to ride a bicycle, Andrew discovered, was frustrating. The five-year-old kept swerving to one side and falling. Realizing that this happened because his son kept looking to one side, Andrew had an idea. “See that pole?” he asked his son. “Just keep your eyes on it and pedal.” His son did just that, and this time he kept going and going!

The incident was a lesson for Andrew himself. Recounting what happened to his small group later, he concluded: Whatever we fix our eyes on is where we’re headed. No wonder Hebrews 12:2 calls on us to keep “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

Life’s responsibilities and routines can draw our attention away from our spiritual walk, as can sinful habits and obsessions that entangle us (V. 1). But if we keep our eyes on Jesus and ask Him to help us put Him first in our thoughts, decisions, and actions, He’ll guide us in everything we do and say, enabling us to stay close to Him in the race on earth. This can be challenging, but God desires to help us fulfill the roles He’s given us. He will give us strength to endure and overcome anything that opposes our walk so we won’t “grow weary and lose heart” (V. 3).

하나님 영광의 한 모습

호주의 사진작가 크리스찬 스펜서는 20년이 넘도록 브라질의 국립공원 이타티아이아에서 사진을 찍었습니다. 그의 사진의 놀라운 점은 벌새의 펼쳐진 날개를 통과하는 햇빛의 효과를 포착한 것입니다. 그는 새들이 밝은 태양과 카메라 렌즈 사이를 날 때 날개가 프리즘처럼 무지개 빛깔을 만들어내는 것을 발견했습니다. 다른 사진작가들도 벌새뿐 아니라 다른 새들 에게서 이것을 포착했습니다.

새의 날개에서 무지개 빛깔을 찾아낸 것은 하나님께서 그의 창조물에 숨겨두신 보물 가운데 하나의 예입니다. 그런 신비로운 아름다움을 볼 때 우리는 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 보좌에 앉으신 예수님을 바라볼 때 그 모습이 어떨지 알고 싶기도 합니다. 요한계시록 4장에서 요한이 하늘의 보좌를 보았을 때 넋을 잃었을 것 같습니다. 그는 보좌에 앉아 계신 그리스도를 묘사하면서 “보좌를 둘러싸고 있는 무지개는 녹보석 같았다”(3절)고 말합니다. 사도에게 계시된 하나님의 영광은 어떤 말로도 다 표현할 수가 없습니다.

HINTS OF GOD’S GLORY

Australian photographer Christian Spencer has spent more than twenty years taking pictures in the Itatiaia National Park in Brazil. One amazing aspect of his photography is that he’s captured the effect of sunlight passing through the open wings of the hummingbird. He’s found that the wings create a prism-like rainbow of colors when birds fly between the bright sun and his camera lens. Other photographers have also captured this in birds other than just the hummingbird.

Finding rainbows of colors in birds’ wings is an example of some of the hidden treasures God has placed in His creation. Such beauty and magnificence can pique our curiosity for what believers in Jesus will observe when they see Him sitting on His throne. When John saw the heavenly throne in Revelation 4, he must have been mesmerized. He describes Christ on the throne with “a rainbow that shone like an emerald” encircling it (V. 3). Words cannot describe the glory of God that was revealed to the apostle.

As we find hidden treasures in God’s creation, may we enjoy each one, knowing there’s so much more awaiting us in heaven. There, we will worship our Creator and praise Him forever: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (V. 11).
