동굴 속의 공포

에너지가 넘치는 세 명의 십대 소년이 매머드동굴로 연결된 거대한 지하 통로로 들어갔습니다. 그들을 안내한 프랭크 삼촌은 그곳 지형에 익숙한 베테랑 탐험가였습니다. 절벽 및 위험한 지점을 잘 알고 있는 삼촌은 아이들에게 “얘들아, 이쪽이야!”라고 외치며 길을 안내했습니다. 하지만 아이들은 삼촌으로부터 점점 더 멀어졌습니다.

그러자 프랭크 삼촌은 전조등을 끄고 잠시 침묵했습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 아이들은 안내자를 잃어버렸다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 그들은 공포에 사로잡혀 삼촌을 불렀지만 아무 대답이 없었습니다. 잠시 후 그들은 삼촌의 전조등이 깜빡이며 켜지는 것을 발견했습니다. 즉각적인 안도와 평화를 느낀 것이지요! 그제서야 그들은 안내자를 따를 준비가 되었습니다.

이 실화는 우리가 성령님의 인도하심에 어떻게 반응하는지 생각해 보게 합니다. 예수님께서 “나를 따르라”(마태복음 16:24)고 하신 음성에서 우리는 멀어질 수 있습니다. 그 음성은 바로 하나님의 자녀 안에 거하시는 성령님의 음성입니다(사도행전 2:38-39).

하나님의 영은 결코 우리를 떠나지 않으시지만, 우리가 그분을 외면할 수 있습니다. 바울 사도는 “성령을 소멸하지 말고”(데살로니가전서 5:19), “항상 기뻐하라 쉬지 말고 기도하라 범사에 감사하라”(16-18절)고 충고합니다. 그럴 때에 우리는 우리를 “흠 없게” 하시고, 인도자 되시는 “평강의 하나님” 곁에 거할 수 있습니다(23절). 그 모든 것은 우리가 아닌 하나님께서 이루시는 일입니다. 바울은 “너희를 부르시는 이는 미쁘시니 그가 또한 이루시리라” (24절)고 우리를 일깨워 줍니다.

PANIC IN A CAVE

They were three adrenaline-fueled teenage boys, unleashed in the immense underground system connecting to Mammoth Cave. With them was their Uncle Frank, a veteran caver familiar with these parts. He knew the drop-offs and danger spots and continually called to the three, “Guys, this way!” Still, they ventured ever farther from him.

Dimming his headlamp, Uncle Frank decided to remain silent. Soon, the boys realized they’d lost their guide. Panic-stricken, they yelled his name. No response. Finally, they saw his headlamp flicker to life in the distance. Instant relief and peace! Now they were ready to follow their guide.

This true story makes an apt parable for how we can treat the gift of the Holy Spirit. Detours lure us away from the voice that calls us to follow the one who said, “Follow me” (MATTHEW 16:24). That voice is the Holy Spirit, who dwells inside each child of God (ACTS 2:38-39).

God’s Spirit will never abandon us, but we can ignore Him. The apostle Paul warns, “Do not quench the Spirit” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:19). Instead, “Rejoice always, pray continually,” and “give thanks in all circumstances” (VV. 16-18). By doing so, we stay close to our guide, “the God of peace,” who can keep us “blameless” (V. 23). It’s not our work that does it. It’s His. As Paul reminds us, “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it” (V. 24).

절대절명의 기도

2011년에 케리 패커드와 그녀의 딸은 새 집으로 이사가기 위해 짐을 싸고 있었습니다. 갑자기 케리가 쓰러졌고 심장이 멈췄습니다 . 의사들이 그녀를 살려냈지만 그녀의 상황은 밤사이에 악화되었습니다. 남편 크레이그는 가족들에게 연락해 작별 인사를 준비하라는 말을 들었습니다. 가족들은 크레이그의 표현대로 그야말로 “절대절명의 기도”를 드렸습니다.

위기의 순간에 절대절명의 기도를 드려본 적이 있습니까? 마리아와 마르다 역시 그러했습니다. 그들은 예수님께 “당신이 사랑하는” 나사로가 중병에 걸렸다고 다급히 소식을 전했습니다(요한복음 11:3). 하지만 예수님께서 도착하셨을 때는 나사로가 이미 나흘 전에 세상을 떠난 뒤였습니다. 절망에 빠진 마르다는 예수님께 말했습니다. “주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다”(21절). 마르다는 그리스도께서 병자를 고치실 수 있다는 것은 알았지만, 그분의 능력이 죽음조차 이길 것이라고 상상조차 하지 못했습니다. 결국 예수님은 나사로를 살리셨고, 이 사건은 몇 주 후에 있을 그분의 부활을 예고한 것입니다.

케리는 공식적으로 심정지 상태였지만 기적적으로 하나님께서 다시 살려 내셨습니다. 케리와 나사로의 이야기에서 간과하기 쉬운 것은 바로 하나님께서는 우리가 알지 못하는 목적을 갖고 계신다는 것입니다. 그분은 모든 사람을 치유하시거나, 모든 죽은 사람을 다시 살리시지 않습니다. 하지만 우리에게 초월적인 확신을 주십니다. “나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고”(25절). 우리는 성도로서 어떤 일이 닥치더라도 예수님과 함께할 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러기에 우리는 절대절명의 기도로 인간적인 절박함을 조금 내려놓을 수 있을 것입니다.

PRAYER OF DESPERATION

In 2011, Karey Packard and her daughter were packing boxes for a move to a new home. Suddenly, Karey collapsed, and her heart stopped. Doctors revived Karey, but her condition worsened through the night. Her husband, Craig, was told to call family to say final goodbyes. They prayed what Craig called “a prayer of desperation.”

How often have we prayed a prayer of desperation in a crisis? Mary and Martha did. They sent a desperate message to Jesus: their brother Lazarus, “the one you love,” was gravely ill (JOHN 11:3). When Christ finally arrived, Lazarus had been dead for four days. Martha, in anguish, said to Jesus: “If you had been here, my brother would not have died” (V. 21). She knew Christ could heal sick people but could not imagine His power to overcome death. Jesus, of course, raised Lazarus, a foreshadowing of His own resurrection weeks later.

Karey had officially flatlined, yet miraculously God brought her back to life. In the stories of both Karey and Lazarus, it’s easy to miss the point: God has purposes that we don’t know. He neither heals everyone nor brings all dead people back to life. But He gives us a transcending assurance: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (V. 25). As believers, whatever happens, we know we’ll be with Jesus. Maybe that makes our desperate prayers a little less desperate.

하나님 안에서 성장하기

게일은 기독교 작가 초기 시절에 출판사로부터 꽃다발, 초콜릿, 허브차 세트 등 눈과 혀를 즐겁게 하는 멋진 선물을 자주 받았습니다. 좋은 선물들이었습니다. 시간이 지나면서 출판사는 지속되는 가치를 지닌 선물들을 보내기 시작했습니다. 1년 통독 성경, 묵상집, 기도집과 같은 책입니다. 게일은 일회성 선물과 달리 그것들을 사용하면서 더욱 성숙한 신앙인이 되었고, 자신의 삶을 통해 다른 이들을 그리스도께 인도하는 일에 전념하게 되었습니다.

이러한 선물을 통한 믿음의 접근은 바울 사도의 멘토링을 통해 성장한 디모데의 모습과도 닮아 있습니다. 바울은 영적 성숙을 강조하며 디모데에게 이렇게 권면했습니다. “너는 진리의 말씀을 옳게 분별하며 부끄러울 것이 없는 일꾼으로 인정된 자로 자신을 하나님 앞에 드리기를 힘쓰라”(디모데후서 2:15).

또한 바울은 “망령되고 헛된 말을 버리라 그들은 경건하지 아니함에 점점 나아가나니”(16절)라고 말했습니다. 이어서 “청년의 정욕을 피하고... 어리석고 무식한 변론을 버리라... 주의 종은 마땅히 다투지 아니하고 모든 사람에 대하여 온유하며 가르치기를 잘하며 참으며”(22-24절)라고 권면합니다.

바울의 지혜로운 조언은 성도들에게 또 다른 유익을 줍니다. 그것은 그리스도를 반대하는 사람들조차도 우리가 성숙한 신앙적 선택을 하는 모습을 보고 “깨어 마귀의 올무에서 벗어날”(26절) 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 하나님 안에서의 “성장”은 개개인의 차원을 넘어 영원히 남을 업적을 낳게 됩니다. 그러므로 믿음의 성장을 게을리하지 않기를 바랍니다. 그로 인해 다른 이들까지 유익을 누리게 될 것입니다.

GROWING UP IN GOD

In her early years as a Christian author, Gayle often received winsome gifts from her publisher. Bouquets of flowers, chocolates, boxes of herbal teas. All lovely. But over time, her publisher began to send gifts with lasting value. A one-year Bible, devotionals, and prayer journals. As she used them, Gayle became a more mature believer—less distracted by frilly gifts and more committed to using her life to lead others to Christ.

This approach recalls Timothy’s growth under the mentoring of the apostle Paul. Stressing spiritual maturity, Paul advised, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 TIMOTHY 2:15).

Then Paul added, “Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly” (V. 16). He added, “Flee the evil desires of youth . . . . Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments. . . . And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful” (VV. 22-24).

Paul’s wise advice offers believers one other key benefit. Even opponents of Christ, when they see our mature choices in Him, may “come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil” (V. 26). So “growing up” in God has eternal outcomes beyond ourselves. Let’s not wait, therefore, to grow up in our faith. Others will benefit as well. PATRICIA RAYBON

선택과 결과

1890년도에 아마추어 조류학자 유진 쉬펠린은 60마리의 유럽 찌르레기 새를 뉴욕 센트럴파크에 놓아주기로 결심했습니다. 이전에 여러 종류의 새들을 방사한 시도가 있었지만 쉬펠린의 이 유럽 찌르레기 방사는 최초의 성공적인 번식 사례로 기록되었습니다. 현재 이 조류는 북미 대륙 전역에 약 팔천 오백만 마리로 늘어나 살고 있습니다. 그런데 안타깝게도 찌르레기는 다른 새들의 영역을 침입하여 토착 조류를 몰아내며, 가축에 질병을 옮기는 등 연간 약 8억 달러에 달하는 피해를 유발하고 있습니다. 쉬펠린은 자신의 선택이 이런 큰 피해를 초래할 줄 상상도 못했을 것입니다.

이렇게 어떤 선택은 엄청난 결과를 낳을 수 있습니다. 아담과 하와는 하나님의 경고를 들었지만 그들의 선택이 모든 피조물에 끼칠 끔찍한 결과를 미처 내다보지 못했습니다. 하나님께서는 그들에게 “동산 각종의 열매는 먹되” (창세기 2:16), “동산 중앙에 있는 나무의 열매”(3:3)만은 금하셨습니다. 하지만 간사한 뱀에게 속은 하와는 ”그 열매를 따 먹게” 되었습니다(6절). 아담도 뒤따라 하나님께서 금지한 그 열매를 먹는 선택을 하고 말았습니다. 단 한 번의 선택이 엄청난 파괴와 슬픔, 그리고 파멸을 불러온 것입니다.

하나님의 지혜를 따르지 않고 다른 길을 선택할 때마다 우리는 참화를 스스로 불러들이는 것입니다. 우리가 하는 선택이 때론 작고 사소하게 여겨질지 모르지만, 우리의 제한된 능력과 찰나의 욕망이 우리를 궁지에 빠뜨릴 수 있습니다. 반면 하나님의 방법을 택하면 생명과 번영이 뒤따릅니다.

CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES

In 1890, amateur ornithologist Eugene Schieffelin decided to release sixty European starlings into New York City’s Central Park. While there were likely several introductions of the species, Schieffelin’s released starlings resulted in the first successful documented nesting. Now there are roughly eighty-five million of the birds flapping across the continent. Unfortunately, starlings are invasive, pushing out native bird populations, spreading disease to cattle, and causing an estimated $800 million annually in damage. Schieffelin couldn’t have imagined the damage his choice would cause.

Choices can have massive consequences. Though warned, Adam and Eve couldn’t have envisioned the disastrous ramifications of their choice on all creation. God had told them they were “free to eat from any tree in the garden” (GENESIS 2:16), save one, the tree in “the middle of the garden” (3:3). But deceived by that wily serpent, “[Eve] took some and ate it” (V. 6). Then Adam followed, also choosing to eat the fruit God forbade. So much destruction, heartbreak, and ruin because of one choice.

Every time we ignore God’s wisdom and choose another path, we invite calamity. It may seem that our choice is insignificant or only affects us; however, our narrow understanding or fleeting desires can easily lead us into a world of trouble. Choosing God’s way, though, leads us to life and flourishing.

할머니의 마지막 밤

우리 할머니는 토요일 밤마다 늘 하시던 습관이 있었습니다. 잠들기 전에 다음 날 교회에 입고 갈 옷과 신발을 미리 꺼내 놓는 것이었습니다. 항상 이른 아침 예배에 참석하셨기 때문에 다음 날 아침에 일어나 서두르지 않고 나가기 위함이었지요. 그러던 어느 토요일 밤, 갑자기 병원에 입원하게 되셨고, 얼마 후 예수님의 부르심을 받았습니다. 병원에서 집으로 돌아온 할아버지는 할머니가 꺼내 놓아 두었던 옷가지를 보았습니다. 할머니는 교회 갈 준비뿐만 아니라 하나님을 만날 준비도 되어 있었던 것입니다.

할머니의 습관은 마태복음 25장에 나오는 슬기로운 처녀들의 비유를 떠올리게 합니다. 그 비유에서 예수님께서는 제자들에게 “깨어 있으라”고 말씀하시며 주님의 재림을 예비하라고 하셨습니다. “그날과 그때”는 아무도 알 수 없으므로(13절), 늘 준비하는 것이 지혜로운 것입니다. 만약 마지막까지 준비를 미룬다면 “미련한 자들”(3절)처럼 될 수 있습니다. 그들은 준비되지 않았기에 기름이 떨어졌고, 기름을 사러 자리를 뜬 사이에 신랑이 오고 말았습니다.

할머니처럼 옷을 준비하지는 않아도 됩니다. 하지만 할머니의 작은 습관은 교회를 향한 마음과 더불어 주님을 향한 갈망을 보여주었습니다. 우리도 할머니의 지혜를 본받아 인생에서 가장 귀한 일을 위해 늘 준비하며, 인도하심을 따라 예수님을 섬기고, 재림을 기다리는 지혜를 갖기를 바랍니다.

GRANDMA’S LAST NIGHT

My grandmother had a routine on Saturday nights. Before she went to bed, she laid out all her clothing, including the shoes she planned to wear to church the next morning. She always attended the early service and wanted to be ready to get up and go the next morning without any delay. One Saturday night, she was suddenly hospitalized. Later, Jesus called her name, and she died. When my grandfather returned home from the hospital, he found her clothes laid out. She’d been prepared to go to church as well as to meet her God.

My grandmother’s ritual reminds me of the wisdom of the bridesmaids in the parable in Matthew 25. In the story, Christ tells His disciples to be ready for His coming: “Keep watch,” He said. No one knows “the day or the hour” He’ll return (V. 13), so it’s wise for us to be prepared. If we wait until the last minute to prepare, we could be like “the foolish ones” (V. 3). They ran out of oil because they hadn’t prepared well, and just after they left their posts to refill their lamps with oil, the bridegroom came.

We may not need to lay out our clothes like my grandmother, but her ritual demonstrated her desire to be ready for church as well as for her Savior. May we use her wisdom to be ready for the most important things in life, serving Jesus as He leads us and being ready for His return.

그리스도께서 주시는 보물

마이클 스팍스는 골동품 가게에서 미 독립 선언서 사본 기념품을 불과 2.48달러에 구입했습니다. 훗날 그 유산지 사본을 자세히 살펴보다가 뭔가 특별한 느낌을 받았습니다. 그래서 전문가에게 감정을 의뢰했고, 그것은 1820년에 존 퀸시 아담스에 의해 인쇄된 200부의 독립 선언서 중 현존하는 36부의 하나라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이후 스팍스는 그 희귀 사본을 477,650 달러에 되팔았습니다!

그런 보물을 적은 가격에 구입한 것도 놀랍지만, 그보다 훨씬 더 귀한 보물을 소개하려 합니다. 어렸을 때 나는 어떤 가치로 따질 수도 없고, 그 어떤 것과도 비교할 수 없는 이 영원한 보물에 대해 알게 되었습니다. 물론 골동품 가게에서 산 것은 아닙니다.

내 부모님은 예수님께서 우리의 죄 값을 치르려고 십자가에서 자신을 희생하여 이 선물을 주셨다고 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 그리고 그 선물은 구원이라고 알려주었습니다. 그것은 이 땅에서의 “온전한 삶”(요한복음 10:10)과, 예수님 으로 인해 주어진 “영생”(요한1서 5:11)의 보물을 우리에게 약속해 줍니다. 나는 그 선물을 믿음으로 받아들였습니다.

저렴한 비용으로 귀한 물건을 얻은 것도 놀랍지만, 그리스도께서 거저 주시는 영원한 보물과는 비교할 수 없습니다. 이 보물은 예수님을 “하나님의 아들로 믿고” 받아들일 때 주어집니다(13절).

THE TREASURE CHRIST OFFERS

Michael Sparks walked into a thrift store and bought a souvenir copy of the US Declaration of Independence for $2.48. Later, as he looked closely at his parchment copy, he felt there was something unusual about it. So he had it assessed by experts, who told him it was one of now thirty-six remaining copies of two hundred commissioned by John Quincy Adams in 1820. Sparks then sold his rare copy of the Declaration for $477,650!

While the acquisition of this treasure for such a small price is astounding, there’s a treasure that’s infinitely better. As a child, I found out about a priceless, matchless, and eternal treasure that didn’t cost me a cent. But I didn’t find it at a thrift store.

My parents revealed to me that a man named Jesus had purchased this gift by giving His life on the cross as a sacrifice for my sins. They then told me this gift was called salvation. It promised the treasure of an abundant “life . . . to the full” on earth (JOHN 10:10) and an “eternal life . . . in [God’s] Son” with Jesus (1 JOHN 5:11). I accepted that gift by faith.

It’s amazing to find an earthly treasure at low cost, but that can’t compare with the eternal treasure Christ offers at no cost. This treasure offered to each person is received as we “believe in the name of the Son of God”—Jesus (V. 13).

우리의 모든 것 되시는 예수님

최종 승패를 가리는 심판의 수신호와 함께 레슬링 선수 케네디 블레이즈는 2024년 올림픽 출전 자격을 얻었습니다. 이 여자 선수는 두 손을 모아 하늘을 바라보며 하나님께 찬양을 드렸습니다. 한 기자가 지난 3년간 어떤 성취가 있었는지 물었습니다. 성공한 운동선수였지만 이 여자 선수는 체력 훈련에 대해 전혀 언급하지 않고, “그저 예수님과 아주 가까워졌을 뿐”이라고 답했습니다. 그리스도를 나의 왕으로 부르며, 주께서 다시 오실 것이라고 선포하면서, 사람들에게 그분을 믿으라고 권면했습니다. “제가 이렇게 큰 일을 해낼 수 있었던 것은 바로 그분 덕분입니다.”라고 말했습니다. 다른 인터뷰에서도 예수님이 자신의 전부이며, 삶에서 일어나는 모든 좋은 일은 예수님 때문이라고 진실하게 고백했습니다.

하나님 중심의 삶을 살고자 하는 이러한 열정은 시편 63편의 다윗의 고백에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 그는 창조주를 향한 간절한 마음으로 이렇게 말했습니다. “내 영혼이 주를 갈망하며 내 육체가 주를 앙모하나이다”(1절). 다윗은 하나님을 “바라보았고”, 그의 “권능”과 “영광”을 “목격”했습니다 노(2절). 그는 하나님의 변함없는 사랑이 “생명보다 낫다”고 선포했습니다(3절). 그리고 이렇게 기도했습니다. “주는 나의 도움이 되셨음이라 내가 주의 날개 그늘에서 즐겁게 부르리이다. 나의 영혼이 주를 가까이 따르니 주의 오른손이 나를 붙드시거니와”(7-8절). 하나님은 분명 다윗의 모든 것이었습니다.

예수님께서 우리의 이유이자 모든 것이 될 때 비로소 우리의 삶은 다른 이들에게 하나님의 구원을 비추는 등대가 될 수 있습니다.

JESUS—OUR EVERYTHING

With the referee’s final gesture, wrestler Kennedy Blades became a 2024 Olympian. She pressed her palms together, lifted her hands and eyes to the heavens, and praised God. A reporter asked about her growth over the past three years. The elite athlete didn’t even mention her physical training. “I’ve just gotten super close to Jesus,” she said. Professing Christ as King, she proclaimed that He’s coming again and encouraged others to believe in Him. “It’s Him,” she said. “That’s the main reason why I was able to accomplish such a big thing.” In other interviews, she faithfully declared that Jesus is everything to her and the reason for everything good in her life.

This passion for living a God-centered life reflects David’s confessions in Psalm 63. Acknowledging his desperation for his creator, he said, “I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you” (V. 1). David had “seen” God and “beheld” His “power” and “glory” (V. 2). He declared God’s steadfast love as “better than life” (V. 3). Then, he prayed: “Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me” (VV. 7-8). God was clearly everything to David.

Our lives can be beacons that point others to a life-saving relationship with God when Jesus becomes our reason, our everything.

영광에서 영광으로

바닷가 마을에 사는 발레리는 그곳의 따뜻한 날씨와 야생동물 사진 촬영, 그리고 물놀이를 즐겼습니다. 그 중에서도 수면 위로 떠오르는 태양을 보는 것이 제일 좋았습니다. 그래서 매일 아침 동이 트기 전에 일어나 일출을 보러 나갔습니다. 흐린 날씨, 또는 타지로 여행할 때를 감안하더라도 발레리는 매년 300번 이상의 일출을 보면서 살았습니다. 그에게 있어서 일출 감상은, 조금도 지겹지 않은, 놓치고 싶지 않은 영광이었기 때문입니다.

출애굽기 34장에는 모세가 영광스러운 여호와를 만난 뒤 그의 얼굴에 광채가 나타난 이야기(29-35절)가 나옵니다. 바울은 예수님께서 오신 후, 모세가 경험한 것보다 더 영광스러운 사역이 시작되었다고 말했습니다(고린도후서 3:7-8). 그것은 바로 성령님의 의로운 사역입니다(8-9절). 하나님께서 계획하신 구원은 이전의 모든 것을 뛰어넘는 영원한 영광을 지니며(10절), 우리도 그 일에 참여하게 되었습니다. 바울 사도는 “수건을 벗은 얼굴로 거울을 보는 것 같이 주의 영광을 보매 그와 같은 형상으로 변화하여 영광에서 영광으로 이른다” (18절)고 말했습니다. 이 무한한 영광은 우리의 행위 여부에 달려 있지 않고, 오직 성령님께 속한 것입니다. 우리도 일출 무렵의 구름처럼, 하나님께서 행하시는 영광스러운 일을 날이 갈 수록 조금 더 많이, 조금 더 잘 드러내게 됩니다.

FROM GLORY TO GLORY

Living in a coastal town, Valerie loved warm weather, wildlife photography, and being in the water. Above all, she loved watching the sunrise over the ocean. Every morning, she woke up before dawn to catch a view of the water. Val estimated that despite cloudy weather or travel, she still managed to see more than three hundred waterfront sunrises each year. She never tired of watching them. In her eyes, the sunrise held a glory she didn’t want to miss.

In Exodus 34, we read about Moses’ radiant face, literally reflecting his glorious encounter with “the Lord” (VV. 29-35). Paul said that since Jesus came, there’s an even more glorious ministry than what Moses experienced (2 CORINTHIANS 3:7-8). It’s the ministry of the Spirit, which brings righteousness (VV. 8-9). God’s plan of salvation has permanent glory, surpassing anything that came before (V. 10), and we get to participate in it. The apostle said, “We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory” (V. 18). That ever-increasing glory is not dependent on how well we perform but on the Holy Spirit. We, like the clouds at sunrise, just reflect a little more and a little better each day the glorious work that He’s doing.

기도로 나누는 사랑

내 친구 라힘이 말했습니다. “엄마가 나를 위해 기도하지 않았다면 난 지금 어찌 되었을지 몰라. 죽었을 수도 있어.” 이 친구는 예전에 마약 유통으로 감옥살이를 했던 마약 중독자였습니다. 어느 날 함께 커피를 마시면서 어머니의 기도가 그의 삶에 가져온 변화에 대해 이야기했습니다. “내가 심하게 걱정을 끼쳤을 때에도 엄마는 기도하며 나를 놓지 않으셨어. 나에게는 문제가 많았지만, 엄마의 기도가 없었다면 훨씬 더 나빠졌었을거야.”

구약 성경에 나오는 사무엘은 기도를 통해 하나님과 주변 사람들에 대한 신실함을 보여 주었습니다. 사울이 길갈에서 왕으로 즉위하던 날, 선지자 사무엘은 안타까운 마음이 들었습니다. 백성들이 하나님 대신 왕을 의지하고 그들의 미래를 왕에게 맡기려 했기 때문입니다.

백성들이 모였을 때 하나님은 때아닌 폭풍을 보내 진노하셨고, 백성들은 그들의 잘못을 후회하며 두려움에 떨었습니다(사무엘상 12:16-18). 그들이 사무엘에게 중재해 줄 것을 부탁하자, 사무엘은 이렇게 답했습니다. “나는 너희를 위하여 기도하기를 쉬는 죄를 여호와 앞에 결단코 범하지 아니하리라” (23절).

사무엘의 모습을 통해 우리는 다른 사람을 위해 기도하는 것이 바로 하나님을 우리 마음과 삶의 중심에 두는 행동임을 알 수 있습니다. 기도를 통해 누군가를 사랑할 때 우리는 하나님만이 할 수 있는 놀라운 역사를 목격하게 됩니다. 그 기회를 놓치지 마시기 바랍니다.

LOVING OTHERS THROUGH PRAYER

“I don’t know where I’d be today if my mom hadn’t prayed for me. I don’t think I’d even be alive,” my friend Rahim related. He was a former addict who’d spent time in prison for drug distribution. Over coffee one day, he shared the difference his mother’s prayers had made in his life. “Even when I disappointed her so badly, she kept loving me with her prayers. I was in a lot of trouble, but if she hadn’t prayed for me, I know it would have been worse.”

The Old Testament account of Samuel tells another story of someone who showed faithfulness to God and others through prayer. On the day Saul was coronated as king at Gilgal, the prophet Samuel was also disappointed. The people had placed their faith and hope for their future in a monarchy instead of in God.

As the people gathered, God displayed His displeasure through an unseasonable storm that terrified them and made them regret their decision (1 SAMUEL 12:16-18). When they pleaded with Samuel to intercede for them, he replied, “Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you” (V. 23).

Samuel’s response reminds us that praying for others is a way of keeping God first in our hearts and lives. When we love others by praying for them, we open the door to witness what only He can do. And we never want to miss that.

잠 못 이룰 때

친구가 밤에 잠을 잘 못 잔다고 털어놓았습니다. 어려운 집안 사정 때문에 생긴 불면증은 그를 밤새 뜬 눈으로 지새게 했습니다. 마침 그 날은 내가 성인 주일 성경반에서 시편 3편을 주제로 공부하려고 준비한 날이었습니다.

시편 3편에 보면 다윗 왕도 가족 간에 문제가 있었습니다. 그런 문제라면 누구라도 잠 못 이룰 일이었습니다. 아들 압살롬이 다윗을 끌어내리고 왕권을 빼앗으려고 그의 이스라엘 통치 기반을 흔들고 있었던 것입니다.

다윗은 절망스러웠습니다. 전령의 “이스라엘의 인심이 다 압살롬에게로 돌아갔나이다”(사무엘하 15:13)라는 말을 듣고 그는 예루살렘을 떠나 피신 했습니다. 시편 3편 1절에서 다윗은 자신의 처지를 “여호와여 나의 대적이 어찌 그리 많은지요”라고 표현합니다.

그러나 다윗이 어떻게 평안을 회복하는지 보십시오. 그는 하나님이 그를 지키는 방패시며 “[그의] 머리를 드시는” 분이심을 기억했습니다(3절). 그러자 누구나 초조한 상황에서 필요로 하는 그 도움의 손길이 임했습니다. 다윗이 “누워 잘” 수 있게 된 것입니다. “내가 누워 자고 깨었으니 여호와께서 나를 붙드심이로다”(5절)고 다윗은 말했습니다.

힘든 시간을 지나고 있던 내 친구에게 이 말씀은 대단한 소식이었습니다. 그리고 힘든 상황을 맞아 잠 못 이루는 밤을 보내고 있는 우리 모두를 위해서도 하나님은 보호하시며 안식을 주십니다. 우리가 하나님을 온전히 신뢰할 때 하나님은 우리가 “누워 잘”(5절) 수 있도록 도와주십니다.

SLEEPLESS?

My friend confided that he hadn’t been sleeping well. His sleeplessness was related to a difficult family situation that had kept him up at night. It happened that this was the day I was prepared to discuss Psalm 3 in my adult Sunday school class.

In Psalm 3, King David also had a family problem, one that would lead most of us to sleeplessness. His son Absalom was undermining David’s rule over Israel as part of his plan to overthrow him and snatch the crown for himself.

David was in despair. He fled Jerusalem after a messenger said, “the hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom” (2 SAMUEL 15:13). In Psalm 3:1, David describes his situation: “Lord, how many are my foes!”

But notice how David found peace. He recalled that God was his shield of protection and that He “lifts [his] head” (V. 3). Then came the help we all need when we fret over our circumstances: David was able to “lie down and sleep.” He observed, “I wake again, because the Lord sustains me” (V. 5).

For my friend facing a tough time, this was great news. And for all of us who face hard circumstances and sleepless nights, our God protects us and gives us rest. When we place our total trust in Him, He helps us “lie down and sleep” (V. 5).
