주님께 의지함

“오 너 참 진지한 표정이구나!” 나는 생후 10주 된 손녀 레일라니에게 말했습니다. 손녀는 미간을 찡그리며 내 얼굴을 유심히 바라보고 있었습니다. “세상을 바라보면 나도 진지해진단다. 하지만 알고 있니? 엄마는 너를 사랑하고 아빠도 너를 사랑하고 할머니 할아버지도 너를 사랑해. 하지만 가장 중요한 건 예수님께서 너를 사랑하셔! 그러니 너는 모든 사랑을 다 가진거란다!”

그때 아이 얼굴에 변화가 생겼습니다. 구름 사이로 햇살이 비치듯이 찌푸린 이마가 펴지더니 얼굴이 환한 미소로 빛나서 내 마음이 녹아 내릴 것만 같았습니다. 보통의 할머니 할아버지들처럼 손녀가 내 말을 이해했다고 믿고 싶었지만 그건 좀 무리일 수 있습니다. 하지만 아마도 내 말 속에 담긴 기쁨을 느꼈을지도 모릅니다. 손녀의 얼굴에 떠오른 순수하고 천진난만한 기쁨은 “하나님의 나라를 어린아이와 같이 받들어야 한다”는 예수님의 말씀을 떠올리게 했습니다(마가복음 10:15).

예수님은 사람들이 예수께서 “어린 아이들을 만져 주고” 축복해주시기를 바라며 “데리고 왔을” 때 그 말씀을 하셨습니다(13, 16절) 하지만 제자들은 예수님이 그런 일을 하시기에는 너무 바쁘거나 너무 중요한 분이라고 생각해서 그들을 꾸짖었습니다. 그것이 예수님을 속상하게 했습니다(14-15절).

어린아이들은 본래 겸손하고 의존적입니다. 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 은혜를 받으려면, 우리도 교만함을 버리고 모든 일에서 하나님이 필요하다는 것을 인정해야 합니다. 그렇게 할 때, 하나님께서는 이 세상의 소망이 없는 것들을 약속하신 영원한 생명의 소망을 주십니다. 그것이 우리를 미소 짓게 할 것입니다.

DEPENDENCE ON GOD

“Oh, you look so serious!” I said to my ten-week-old granddaughter Leilani. She was studying my face with a knitted brow as I talked to her. “I’d be serious too,” I continued, “looking at this world. But you know what? Mama loves you, Daddy loves you, and Baba and Papa [our nicknames as grandparents] love you too. But best of all, Jesus loves you! And that means everything!”

Then it happened. Like a cloud letting the sun through, the furrow left her brow and her little face lit up with a smile that melted my heart. Like most grandparents, I’d like to believe she understood me, though that may be a stretch. But perhaps she caught some of the joy behind my words. The simple, innocent joy that shone on her face brought to mind Jesus’ words that we must “receive the kingdom of God like a little child” (MARK 10:15).

Jesus said those words as “people were bringing little children” to Him so He might “place his hands on them” and bless them (VV. 13, 16). But “the disciples rebuked them,” thinking Jesus too busy or important. That troubled Him (VV. 14-15).

Children are naturally humble and dependent. To receive God’s kindness to us in Christ, we too must turn from pride and admit our need for Him in everything. As we do, He exchanges this world’s hopelessness with the promise of life with God forever. And that should make us smile.

하나님의 정의에 대한 생각

끔찍한 뉴스였습니다. 한 외국인 가사도우미가 주인집 가족에게 심한 학대를 당한 끝에 목숨을 잃었습니다. 가해자들은 결국 감옥에 갔지만, 저는 그것만으로는 부족하다고 느꼈습니다. ‘그들도 그 불쌍한 소녀가 겪은 것과 똑같은 고통을 당한 후에 사형당해야 한다’고 생각했습니다. 그런데 문득, 내 분노가 선을 넘은 것이 아닐까 하는 의문이 들었습니다. 이런 생각을 하는 것이 잘못된 것일까요?

시편 109편을 읽으면서 우리의 본능적인 정의감에 대한 깨달음을 얻었습니다. 다윗 또한 가난하고 힘없는 사람들을 괴롭히는 자들에 대한 분노로 씨름했습니다. 그는 “그의 연수를 짧게 하시며... 그의 자녀는 고아가 되고 그의 아내는 과부가 되며”라고 저주했습니다(8-9절).

하지만 다윗 왕은 비록 복수할 힘이 있었음에도 직접 원수를 갚지 않았습니다. 대신, 참된 정의와 구원의 근원이신 하나님께 나아갔습니다. “이는 나의 대적들이 곧 내 영혼을 대적하여 악담하는 자들이 여호와께 받는 보응 이니이다... 주의 인자하심을 따라 나를 구원하소서”(20, 26절)라고 기도했습니다.

하나님께서는 우리를 하나님의 성품을 반영하는 정의감으로 창조하셨다고 믿습니다. 우리는 솔직하게 감정을 표현할 수 있습니다. 그러나 궁극적으로 심판과 형벌은 하나님께 맡겨야 하고, 하나님의 시간과 방식으로 공의를 베푸실 것을 믿어야 합니다. 바울 사도는 분명하게 말합니다. “너희가 친히 원수를 갚지 말고... 하나님의 진노하심에 맡기라”(로마서 12:19).

A SENSE OF GOD’S JUSTICE

The news was horrific. A live-in foreign domestic helper had been so ill-treated by the family she worked for that she died. The employers were eventually jailed, but I felt it wasn’t enough. They should have suffered the same horrors they put that poor girl through, I thought, and then put to death. Then I wondered if my anger had crossed the line. Was I wrong to think such things?

Reading Psalm 109 gave me an insight into our natural sense of justice. David, for one, wrestled with anger toward those who wronged the poor and needy. “May his days be few . . . . May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow,” he charged (VV. 8-9).

But King David didn’t take revenge on these men—even though he had the power to. Instead, he turned to God as the true source of justice and deliverance. “May this be the Lord’s payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me,” he said. “Save me according to your unfailing love” (VV. 20, 26).

I believe God made us with an inherent sense of justice, for it reflects His own character. And we can express our feelings honestly. But ultimately we’re to leave judgment and punishment to Him—trusting Him to bring justice in His time and way. The apostle Paul states things clearly: “Do not take revenge . . . but leave room for God’s wrath” (ROMANS 12:19).

하나님께서 허락하신 범위 안에서 자유

어느 조경 건축가 팀이 유치원 놀이터에 울타리를 설치하는 것이 어떤 영향을 미치는지 연구했습니다. 울타리가 없는 놀이터에서는 아이들이 학교 건물과 선생님 가까이에 모여 있고, 멀리 가지 않았습니다. 하지만 울타리가 있는 놀이터에서는 아이들이 전체 공간을 자유롭게 활용하며 즐겼습니다. 연구진은 경계가 오히려 더 큰 자유를 줄 수 있다는 결론을 내렸습니다. 이는 많은 사람들이 경계가 자유를 제한한다고 생각하는 것과는 반대되는 개념입니다. 그러나 울타리가 자유를 제공할 수 있습니다!

하나님은 그분의 경계가 우리에게 주는 자유를 강조하십니다. 이스라엘에게 십계명을 주실 때, 하나님은 그분의 신성한 경계 안에서 살아갈 때 “번성하는” 삶을 약속하셨습니다. “너희 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 명령하신 모든 도를 행하라 그리하면 너희가 살 것이요 복이 너희에게 있을 것이며 너희가 차지할 땅에서 너희의 날이 길리라”(신명기 5:33). 여기서 ‘번성’이라는 개념은 좋은 결과를 얻는 삶, 곧 양질의 삶을 의미합니다.

십자가에서 죽으심으로 율법을 완성하신 예수님은 “너희가 내 말에 거하면 참으로 내 제자가 되고 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라”(요한복음 8:31-32)고 선포하셨습니다. 그렇습니다. 하나님의 경계는 우리를 위한 것입니다. “울타리”는 우리가 하나님과 함께 경험하도록 창조된 삶을 더욱 자유롭게 누릴 수 있도록 도와줍니다.

THE FREEDOM GOD PROVIDES

A team of landscape architects studied the effects of providing a fence around a preschool playground. On playgrounds without fences, children tended to gather close to the school building and their teacher and didn’t stray away. But on fenced-in playgrounds, they enjoyed the entire area. The researchers concluded that boundaries can create a greater sense of freedom. This seems counterintuitive to so many of us who think boundaries restrict enjoyment. Yet fences can provide freedom!

God underlines the freedom His boundaries provide for us. In offering the Ten Commandments to Israel, He promised that a “prosperous” life would result from living within His divine boundaries. “Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess” (DEUTERONOMY 5:33). Here the concept of prosperity includes a life lived with good results— a life of quality.

Jesus, who fulfilled the law with His death on the cross, proclaimed, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (JOHN 8:31-32). Indeed, God’s boundaries are for our good. “Fences” can free us to enjoy the life God created us to experience with Him.

그리스도 안에서의 소명

지니 히슬롭은 2024년 석사학위 수료증을 받을 때 청중의 기립박수를 받았습니다. 왜 일까요? 학위과정을 마친 지 84년만에 받은 학위 이니까요! 1941년에 그는 논문 제출만 남겨두고 있었습니다. 하지만 당시 남자 친구 조지가 갑자기 2차 세계대전에 참전하도록 소집되면서, 두 사람은 서둘러 결혼을 하고, 지니의 거의 다 끝난 학업을 뒤에 남겨 놓은 채 주둔지로 떠나야만 했습니다. 그로부터 오랜 공백기를 거쳐 마침내 그녀가 시작했던 학업을 마무리 지을 수 있게 된 것입니다.

에스라는 바벨론 유배에서 예루살렘으로 돌아가려고 수년간을 기다려 온, 하나님 율법에 대한 진정한 “고급 학위”를 받고 성경을 공부하는 학생이었습니다. “에스라가 여호와의 율법을 연구하여 준행하며 율례와 규례를 이스라엘에게 가르치기로 결심하였더라”(에스라 7:10). 수십 년 전, 스룹바벨과 이스라엘 포로들의 일부는 바벨론에서 예루살렘으로 돌아가 성전을 재건할 수 있는 허락을 받았습니다(2:1-2). 이제는 에스라가 “하나님의 선한 손의 도우심을 받아”(7:9) 더 많은 포로들을 이끌고 예루살렘으로 돌아오게 되었습니다. 하나님은 에스라를 통해 성경에 따른 올바른 예배를 회복하고 개혁하는 일을 하셨습니다: “에스라가 책을 펼 때에 모든 백성이 엎드려 여호와께 경배하였다”(느헤미야 8:5-6).

OUR CALLING IN CHRIST

Ginnie Hislop received a standing ovation as she was handed her master’s degree diploma in 2024. Why? It came eightyfour years after she’d completed her coursework! In 1941, she needed only to submit her thesis. But her then boyfriend, George, was suddenly called to serve during World War II. The two quickly married and headed to his army outpost—leaving Ginnie’s nearly realized degree behind. But after a lengthy pause, she was finally able to complete what she’d started.

Ezra was a student of Scripture—one who truly had an “advanced degree” in God’s law—who’d been waiting years to return to Jerusalem from exile in Babylon. “Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees” (EZRA 7:10). Zerubbabel and a group of Israelite exiles had been permitted to return from Babylon to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem decades earlier (2:1-2). And now Ezra, who had “the gracious hand of his God . . . on him” (7:9), was leading more exiles to Jerusalem. God would use him to reform and restore the proper worship of Him according to Scripture: “Ezra opened the book [of the Law]. All the people . . . bowed down and worshiped the Lord” (NEHEMIAH 8:5-6).

Ezra had to wait decades, but he completed his calling in God’s strength. In His power, let’s persist in finishing the work He has for us.

서로를 위해 기도할 준비

하이에나 무리가 홀로 있는 암사자를 에워쌌습니다. 이 시끄러운 짐승들이 공격하자, 암사자는 필사적으로 맞서 싸웠습니다. 수많은 적들을 물리치려고 필사적으로 물고, 할퀴고, 으르렁거리고 울부짖다가 결국 쓰러지고 말았습니다. 하이에나 무리가 암사자를 에워쌌고, 바로 그때 다른 암사자가 세 마리의 다른 사자들과 함께 쓰러진 암사자를 구하러 왔습니다. 수적으로 열세였지만, 하이에나들을 몰아낼 때까지 싸웠습니다. 마치 또 다른 공격을 예상하듯 암사자들은 지평선을 바라보며 함께 자리를 지켰습니다.

예수님을 따르는 성도들도 이같이 서로의 도움이 절실히 필요합니다. 우리가 줄 수 있는 가장 강력한 도움은 기도입니다. 바울 사도는 로마 교회에 이같이 편지를 썼습니다. “형제들아 내가 우리 주 예수 그리스도와 성령의 사랑 으로 말미암아 너희를 권하노니 너희 기도에 나와 힘을 같이하여 나를 위하여 하나님께 빌라”(로마서 15:30). 바울은 예수께서 “유대에서 순종하지 아니하는 자들로부터 건짐을 받게” 기도하고 “성도들”이 바울이 섬기는 일을 “받을 만하게” 하기를 기도하라고 부탁했습니다(31절). 바울은 하나님의 나라에 속하게 됨으로써 얻는 보상을 알고 있었습니다(32절). 바울은 또한 “평강의 하나님께서 너희 모든 사람과 함께 계실지어다”(33절)라고 축복으로 그의 편지를 마무리하며, 기도로 성도들과 연합했습니다.

예수님을 믿고 살아갈 때, 우리는 육체적 그리고 영적 영역에서 적대적인 사람들과 마주하게 됩니다. 하나님은 우리와 함께하시며 우리를 대신해 싸워 주신다고 약속하십니다. 하지만, 우리는 함께 서서 항상 기도할 준비가 되어 있어야 합니다.

READY TO PRAY

A pack of hyenas surrounded a lone lioness. When the cackling beasts attacked, the lioness fought back. Biting, clawing, growling, and roaring in a desperate attempt to ward off her enemies, she finally fell. As the clan engulfed her, another lioness came to the rescue with three helpers only seconds behind her. Though outnumbered, the big cats fought off the hyenas until they scattered. The lionesses stood together, scanning the horizon as if expecting another attack.

Believers in Jesus desperately need help from others too. The most powerful help we can offer is prayer. The apostle Paul wrote in a letter to the church in Rome, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me” (ROMANS 15:30). Paul asked them to pray that he would “be kept safe from the unbelievers in Judea” and that the “Lord’s people” would receive him and his gifts “favorably” (V. 31). He acknowledged the rewards of being a part of their community (V. 32). He stood with them in prayer, too, ending his letter with a blessing: “The God of peace be with you all” (V. 33).

As we live for Jesus, we’ll face adversaries in the physical and spiritual realms. God promises to be with us and fight on our behalf, however, as we stand together . . . always ready to pray.

모스는 개신교 목사의 아들이었으며, 풍경화를 그리는 가난한 화가 였습니다. 1820년대에 그는 식민지 미국에서의 “떠돌이 화가”들처럼 화공으로 근근이 생계를 이어갔습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 그의 삶을 다른 방향으로 이끄셨습니다. 모스는 과학에도 관심이 있었습니다. 그는 전자석에 대해 배우게 되었고 세상을 바꿀 아이디어를 떠올렸습니다. 1832 년, 사무엘 F. B. 모스는 전신의 개념을 구상했고, 이후 세계 최초의 전신기를 발명했습니다.

SEE WHAT GOD HAS DONE

Morse was the son of a Protestant minister and a struggling painter of landscapes. In the 1820s, he made a meager living as a limner—“an itinerant painter” of colonial America. But his was a life God led in another direction. Morse also had an interest in science. He learned about electromagnets, conceiving an idea that would change the world. In 1832, Samuel F. B. Morse conceived the idea of an electric telegraph and later went on to make the first working telegraph.

Probably the most dramatic biblical account of “career change” was that of Saul, who was “breathing out murderous threats” against believers in Christ (ACTS 9:1). Jesus appeared to him in a great light (V. 3) saying that Saul was persecuting Him. Essentially, Saul was told to stop because he was under new orders now (V. 6). Saul did a U-turn in his life and assumed a new identity in Christ as the apostle who would eventually spread the gospel wherever he went.

Sometimes what we think is our future really isn’t. God leads us in another direction. Perhaps He needs to call us out of our sin. Or maybe it’s a change of ministry or vocation. When God redirects our lives, we do well to stop what we’re doing and follow our new orders. And as our new path opens before us, we might just echo the joy of the first dot-and-dash message of Morse’s telegraph: “What hath God wrought!”

온전한 기쁨을 바라면서

브로니 웨어는 자신의 블로그 글 “죽음을 앞둔 사람들의 후회”에 말기 환자 들을 돌보는 간호사로서 들었던 여러가지 후회를 정리해 놓았습니다. 그 중에는 “일을 너무 열심히 하지 않았더라면” 그리고 “친구들과 계속 연락하면서 지냈더라면”이라는 후회가 있었습니다. 아마도 가장 흥미로운 것은 “좀 더 행복하게 살았더라면”이라는 후회였습니다.

“우리 자신이 피할 수 없는 죽음에 직면하는 것이야말로 기쁨으로 가득 찬 삶을 살 수 있는 훌륭한 도구”라고 웨어는 말합니다. 좋은 조언입니다. 과연 그런 기쁨의 근원은 무엇일까요? 우리는 궁극적인 의미를 어디서 찾을 수 있을까요? 젊은 시절, 요한 사도는 삶의 목적에 대해 왜곡된 관점을 가지고 있었습니다. 그와 그의 형제는 예수께 “주의 영광 중에서 우리를 하나는 주의 우편에, 하나는 좌편에 앉게 하여 주옵소서”라고 요청했습니다(마가복음 10:37). 그들의 요청은 제자들 사이에 불화만 일으켰을 뿐이었습니다(41절).

수십 년 후, 요한은 예수님 안에서 사랑과 공동체에 대해 완전히 다른 관점을 가지게 되었습니다. 요한은 예수님의 삶과 죽음, 부활이 모든 것의 기초 라고 여기고, “이 영원한 생명을 여러분에게 증언하고 선포합니다”라고 기록 했습니다(요한1서 1:2, 새번역). 요한은 “여러분도 우리와 교제를 갖도록 하기 위해” (3절, 현대인의 성경) 예수님에 대해 이야기한다고 하면서, 이어서 “우리의 사귐은 아버지와 그의 아들 예수 그리스도와 함께 누림이라 우리가 이것을 쓰는 것은 우리의 기쁨이 충만하게 하려 함이라”( 3-4절)고 덧붙였습니다.

WISHING FOR JOY

In her blog post “Regrets of the Dying,” Bronnie Ware outlines regrets she heard as a nurse caring for the terminally ill. Among them were “I wish I hadn’t worked so hard” and “I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.” Perhaps most intriguing: “I wish that I had let myself be happier.”

“Facing our own inevitable death is a fabulous tool for joy-filled living,” Ware writes. That’s sound advice, but what is the source of such joy? Where do we find ultimate meaning?

As a young man, John the disciple held a distorted view of life’s purpose. He and his brother asked Jesus, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory” (MARK 10:37). Their request only sparked dissension among the disciples (V. 41).

Decades later John held a drastically different view—one of love and community in Jesus. John saw Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection as foundational to everything. “We proclaim to you the eternal life,” he wrote (1 JOHN 1:2). John told us about Jesus so that “you also may have fellowship with us” (V. 3). Then he added, “Our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete” (VV. 3-4).

Life can bring regrets. Jesus invites us to exchange them for the complete joy only He can give.

손을 내미시는 예수님

사무실 청소를 하는 레티는 빠르게, 정말 빠르게 걷는 것으로 유명 했습니다. 그렇게 해서 레티는 쉽게 사람들을 피할 수 있었습니다. 가난 때문에 상처받고, 또 무시 받는 데에도 익숙한 레티는 반사적으로 한 손으로 얼굴을 가리고 사람들을 지나쳤습니다. 자기는 “정상적이고 아름답고 교양 있는 사람들과 같지 않다”고 말하는 레티의 수치심은 심각할 정도로 깊었습니다. 그러다가 함께 일하는 한 여인이 친구가 되면서 레티는 치유되기 시작했습니다.

나병을 앓던 한 남자는 아마도 레티보다 더 깊은 수치심을 안고 살았을 것입니다. 그의 병 때문에 그는 주류 사회에서 소외되었고 모세 율법의 기준에 따라 혐오스럽고 부정한 자가 되었습니다. 그 사람은 육체뿐 아니라 마음과 영혼까지 상처가 있었습니다. 그 나병 환자는 이런 상처를 가지고 그리스도께 나아가 “원하시면 저를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있나이다”(마가복음 1:40)라고 간구하였습니다. 그는 나를 치료할 뿐만 아니라 ‘나의 수치심도 없애 달라’고 말하고 있었던 것입니다.

예수님은 그를 버려두지 않고 연민의 마음으로 대해 주셨습니다. 예수님은 손을 내밀어 그에게 대시며 “내가 원하노니 깨끗함을 받으라”라고 말씀하셨습니다(41절). 직장 동료가 레티에게 친구가 되어주었듯이 예수님이 하신 일은 그 사람이 겪은 모든 고통을 이해하시고, 나아가 그것을 받아들이시는 표현이었습니다.

우리는 “정상적이고 아름답고 교양 있는 사람들”과는 다르다고 느끼는 것을 숨기면서 살아갈 수 있습니다. 우리를 수치스럽게 하는 이런 것들을 예수님께서 만지시고 구원하시도록 우리 스스로 허락할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 우리는 하나님의 자녀가 되었기에 받아들여지고 사랑받는 자들이라는 것을 알 수 있기를 바랍니다.

JESUS REACHES FOR YOU

Letty, a cleaner in an office building, was known for walking fast—really fast. In doing so, she could easily avoid people. Wounded by poverty and accustomed to condescension, she passed others with one hand reflexively covering part of her face. Her shame, in her words, over not being “like normal, beautiful, educated people,” was profoundly deep. When a woman at work extended her friendship, Letty began to heal.

A man with leprosy lived with a shame perhaps deeper than Letty’s. His disease rendered him revolting and ceremonially unclean by standards of the Mosaic law, separating him from mainstream society. The man’s wounds weren’t just physical; they were also lesions of the soul and spirit. With this woundedness, the leper approached Christ, begging, “If you are willing, you can make me clean” (MARK 1:40). Heal me, he was saying, but also remove my shame.

Jesus responded not with repulsion but with compassion. “I am willing,” He said, “Be clean!” as He reached out and touched the man (V. 41). Just like the friendship extended to Letty by a coworker, Jesus’ gesture was one of understanding all that the man had suffered and of acceptance despite it all.

We may walk through life hiding what we feel separates us from “normal, beautiful, educated people.” May we allow Jesus to touch and redeem these things that cause us shame. May we know that as God’s children, we’re accepted and loved.

지혜를 찾아 깊이 파고들기

플로리다에서 건설 인부들이 4천2백만 달러의 배수로 공사를 하던 중 한 귀한 보물을 발굴했습니다. 땅 속 깊이 묻혀 잘 보존된 1800년대의 어선을 발견한 것입니다. 배 안에는 등유 램프의 일부와 코코넛 껍질로 만든 컵과 동전 등, 흥미로운 유물들이 있었습니다. 그 배는 백 년도 더 이전에 그 지역의 생활상을 자세히 알고 싶어하는 사람들의 연구 대상이 되었습니다. “[이것은] 단순한 배 한 척이 아닙니다. [이것은] 당시의 보통 사람들이 살던 모습들을 말해주고 있습니다.” 한 해양 고고학자의 말입니다. 이렇게 깊이 파고든 결과 지식과 지혜를 얻을 수 있었습니다.

전도서를 공부해 보면 그 안에 대단한 지혜의 보물이 들어있습니다. 당시의 일상 생활뿐 아니라 지금 우리 시대에도 적용되는 오래된 지혜가 들어 있습니다. 솔로몬은 “지혜로운 사람은... 모든 일을 하는데 적절한 시기와 방법이 있다는 것을 안다”(전도서 8:5-6, 현대인의 성경)고 말합니다. 그는 지혜는 “하나님의 모든 행사”(17절)와 그분이 누구신지(12:1)를 기억함으로 얻을 수 있다고 썼습니다. 하나님을 떠나 “헛된”(8:14) 삶에 하나님 한 분만이 의미를 부여해 주실 수 있습니다. 하나님의 지혜는 우리를 하나님의 임재 안에서 만족스럽고 기쁨에 찬 삶을 경험하게 합니다(15절).

플로리다에서 발견된 배가 분명히 보여주는 것처럼 전도서는 이 세상 세대가 “가고... 온다”(1:4)고 말합니다. 그러나 하나님의 지혜는 참되고 영원한 생명과 목적으로 인도합니다(요한복음 10:10). 이제 말씀 속으로 깊이 파고들어 하나님께서 주시는 오래된 지혜를 찾아보도록 합시다.

DIGGING DEEP FOR WISDOM

A Florida construction crew working on a $42 million drain project unearthed a valuable treasure. Deep in the soil, they found a well-preserved fishing boat from the 1800s. The vessel contained interesting artifacts, including part of a kerosene lamp, drinking cups made from coconut shells, and coins. The ship is being studied with the hope that it will provide details of what life was like in that region more than one hundred years ago. “[It’s] more than just the vessel itself. [It’s] this reminder of everyday people,” said one maritime archaeologist. By digging deep, knowledge and wisdom were gained.

Ecclesiastes contains great treasures of wisdom as we study it—ancient wisdom reflecting on the everyday events of that time and ours as well. Solomon reveals how a “wise heart will know the . . . proper time and procedure for every matter” (ECCLESIASTES 8:5-6). He wrote that wisdom is found in remembering “all that God has done” (V. 17) and who He is (12:1). God alone provides meaning to life that—apart from Him—is “meaningless” (8:14). His wisdom allows us to experience a contented, joy-filled life in His presence (V. 15).

Ecclesiastes reveals that people will “come and . . . go” (1:4), as evidenced by the ship found in Florida. But God’s wisdom leads to real and lasting life and purpose (JOHN 10:10). Let’s dig deep into the Scriptures to find the ancient wisdom He provides.

잃어버린 언약궤

가까운 캠프장에서 교회의 가을 수련회 동안 한 번은 제프 목사가 나의 아들과 산책을 했습니다. 아들은 숲길을 따라 있는 야외 예배당으로 그를 인도했는데, 거기서 갑자기 언약궤를 발견하게 되었습니다! 물론 진짜 언약궤가 아니었습니다. 그것은 남편이 몇 년 전 제프 목사의 격려를 받아 시작해서 최근에 아들이 깜짝 선물로 완성한 실물 크기의 금빛 복제품이었습니다.

제프 목사는 너무 흥분되어 다른 사람들에게 언약궤를 캠프 식당으로 옮기는 일을 도와 달라고 급히 부탁했습니다. 남자들이 길을 따라 언약궤를 옮길 때 제프 목사의 어린 두 손자가 손을 붙잡고 뒤에서 따라오는 모습은 정말 인상적이었습니다!

성경은 하나님께서 그의 백성들과 함께 하심을 상징하는 진짜 언약궤가 그동안 보관되어 있었던 집에서 예루살렘의 있어야 할 장소인 “다윗 성” 으로 옮겨졌을 때의 기쁜 순간에 대해 이야기합니다(사무엘하 6:12). 백성들이 외치며 나팔 소리가 울리는 가운데 다윗 왕은 기쁨에 넘쳐 “여호와 앞에서 힘을 다하여” 춤을 추었습니다(14-15절).

긴 세월이 지나 이스라엘 백성들은 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀가고 예루살렘은 파괴되었습니다(열왕기하 25장). 성경은 언약궤가 어떻게 되었는지 알려주지 않습니다. 그에 관한 전설들은 많지만, 우리는 이제 언약궤가 없어도 하나님의 임재를 누릴 수 있습니다(요한복음 14:16-17). 예수님의 죽음과 부활, 그리고 성령을 보내주심으로 하나님은 그리스도를 믿는 모든 사람과 함께 하십니다. 이것은 우리가 기뻐할 최고의 이유입니다!

THE LOST ARK

During his church’s fall retreat at a nearby camp, Pastor Jeff took a walk with my son, who led him through a wooded trail to the outdoor chapel. Suddenly they came upon the ark of the covenant! Of course, it wasn’t the real ark but a life-sized, gold-colored replica begun by my husband years ago, with Jeff’s encouragement, and recently completed by my son as a surprise.

Jeff was so thrilled he hurried to enlist others to help him bring the ark to the camp dining hall. What a sight to see the men carrying the ark down the road as two of the pastor’s little grandsons trailed behind hand in hand!

Scripture tells of the joyous occasion when the real ark of the covenant, which symbolized God’s presence with His people, was brought from the house where it had been kept into its proper place in Jerusalem, “the City of David” (2 SAMUEL 6:12). King David was so overjoyed he danced “before the Lord with all his might” as the people shouted and trumpets sounded (VV. 14-15).

Years later, the Israelites were taken captive to Babylon, and Jerusalem was destroyed (2 KINGS 25). Scripture doesn’t tell us what happened to the ark. Legends abound, but we no longer need the ark to enjoy God’s presence (JOHN 14:16-17). Through Jesus’ death, resurrection, and sending of the Spirit, God is with all who believe in Christ. That’s an excellent reason to rejoice!
