선으로 악을 이긴다

이야기 속의 주인공 두리틀 박사는 동물들과 대화합니다. 이 이야기는 책으로, 또 영화와 연극으로 많은 팬에게 즐거움을 주었습니다. 하지만 작가 휴 로프팅이 제1차 세계대전의 참혹한 참호 속에서 자신의 어린 자녀들에게 이 이야기를 처음 썼다는 사실을 아는 사람은 많지 않습니다. 그는 너무 끔찍해서 전쟁 이야기를 가족들에게 보내는 편지에 쓸 수 없었다고 나중에 밝혔습니다. 그 대신에 이 동화 같은 이야기를 써서 그림과 함께 보냈습니다. 이 기발하고 재미있는 이야기는 로프팅이 전쟁의 공포에 맞서는 나름대로의 방식으로 탄생된 작품이었습니다.

우리는 하나님께서 주신 방식으로 각자 악을 선으로 이길 수 있습니다. 어떤 사람은 아름다운 이야기를 씁니다. 어떤 사람은 가난한 이들을 돕습니다. 어떤 이들은 자기 집을 환영의 장소로 내놓습니다. 또 어떤 이들은 멜로디, 시 또는 대화를 통해 하나님의 이야기를 전합니다. 다양한 방법으로 우리는 하나님의 선하심과 평화를 세상에 전하며(18절), 악을 이겨 나갑니다.

OVERCOMING EVIL WITH GOOD

Doctor Dolittle, the fictional doctor who converses with animals, has delighted fans through books, movies, and plays. However, few people know that author Hugh Lofting first wrote the Dolittle tales to his children from the ghastly trenches of World War I. He later said that the war was too awful to recount in his letters—so he wrote and illustrated stories instead. These whimsical, joy-filled tales were Lofting’s way of pushing back against the war’s horror.

It’s inspiring to see a person moving against the menacing, degrading forces that seem too powerful to thwart. We admire this resilient courage because we fear that injustice, violence, and greed will triumph. Sometimes we fear that the whole world will be “overcome by evil” (ROMANS 12:21). And these fears are wellfounded if we’re left to ourselves. However, God has not left us to ourselves. He fills us with His divine strength, places us in the action, and calls us to “overcome evil with good” (V. 21).

We each overcome evil with good in whatever ways God has put into our hearts. Some of us write beautiful stories. Some of us care for the poor. Some of us make our homes places of welcome. Some of us share God’s story through melody, poetry, or conversation. In a myriad of ways, we carry His goodness and peace into the world (V. 18), overcoming evil as we go.

그리스도를 위하여 제자 삼기

농구 시즌 초반, 우리 동네 중학교 코치가 가장 열심히 했던 일은 선수 들에게 위험을 감수하고 슛을 시도하라고 설득하는 것이었습니다. 코치는 사이드라인에서 “슛해!”라고 간청했습니다. 그러나 선수들은 열심히 공을 패스했습니다. 드리블하는 것도 선호했습니다. 시즌이 절반쯤 지나서야 대부분의 선수들이 의심을 떨쳐버리고 슛을 시도하기 시작했습니다. 하지만 “해보자”라는 결심이 모든 것을 바꿨습니다. 코치의 말을 따르고, 의심을 버리고, 비록 득점에 실패하더라도 시도하면서, 그들은 승리하는 법을 배웠습니다.

예수님은 제자를 삼으라는 부르심에 순종하기 위해 의심을 버리라고 가르치십니다. 주님은 “하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니 그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라”(마태복음 28:18-20)고 말씀하셨습니다.

MAKING DISCIPLES FOR CHRIST

Early in the basketball season, the coach at our neighborhood middle school seemed to work hardest convincing his players to risk shooting the ball. “Shoot!” he pleaded from the sidelines. His players eagerly passed the ball. Dribbling was a favorite too. The season was half over before most of them would shed their doubts and try to shoot the ball to score. But “going for it” made all the difference. By obeying their coach, letting go of doubt, and trying—even if they often missed the target—they learned to win.

Jesus teaches us to let go of doubt to obey His call to make disciples. He explains, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (MATTHEW 28:18-20).

In practical terms, this can mean stepping out of our comfort to share our story of what God has done for us. Or getting involved in the lives of our hurting neighbors, showing them Jesus’ love. Such approaches work, but only if we let go and try them.

Above all, we go in Jesus’ authority to attempt what may look hard—making disciples. But we need not fear. Jesus promised: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (V. 20).

신생아 중환자실에서 한 산모를 방문했을 때, 그 어머니는 갓난아기를 가슴에 꼭 안고 있었습니다. 이 첨단 병원에서 의사들은 아이의 건강을 회복하고 강하게 하기 위해 아주 단순한 “처방”을 내렸는데, 바로 산모가 오랜 시간 딸 아기를 품에 안고 있도록 한 것이었습니다.

부모의 넘치는 사랑과 다정한 돌봄만큼 아이에게 치유와 위안을 주는 것은 거의 없습니다. 우리는 이사야 선지자가 하나님과 그분의 백성의 관계를 묘사한 장면에서도 이 강렬한 이미지를 찾아볼 수 있습니다.

이스라엘 민족이 하나님을 거부했기 때문에 곧 추방당할 것을 예언한 후에도(이사야 39:5-7), 이사야는 하나님께서 여전히 그들을 사랑하시며 항상 돌보실 것임을 강조했습니다. 하나님의 자비하신 긍휼과 확실한 보호하심을 아름다운 비유로 설명했는데, 사랑이 넘치는 아버지가 “목자 같이 양 떼를 먹이시며 어린 양을 그 팔로 모아 품에 안으시며”(40:11)라고 묘사한 것입니다.

GOD’S TENDER CARE

Sitting in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, I visited with a mother as her newborn baby cuddled up against her chest. In this technologically advanced medical facility, the doctors had recommended a very low-tech “prescription” to improve and strengthen the child’s health—the new mom was to spend extended periods of time simply holding her daughter.

There’s almost nothing like the overwhelming love and tender compassion of a parent to provide healing comfort for a child. We see this powerful imagery in the prophet Isaiah’s description of God with His people.

Even after prophesying impending exile for the nation of Israel because they’d rejected God (ISAIAH 39:5-7), Isaiah emphasized to the people that God still loved them and would always provide for them. God’s tender compassion and secure care is evident in the beautiful metaphor where He is described as a shepherd who, much like a loving father, gathers His sheep “in his arms and carries them close to his heart” (40:11).

God’s presence grants us peace and protection and reminds us that He carries us close to His heart, like a newborn baby with its mother. As He “gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (V. 29), the Spirit’s healing comfort allows us to meet the challenges of each day.

주님의 자비를 찾아서

팬들은 그를 나이트버드라는 예명으로 불렀습니다. 가수이자 작곡가였던 제인 크리스틴 마르체프스키는 2021년 인기 TV 예능 프로그램에서 많은 팬들의 사랑을 받았습니다. 2017년에 유방암 3기 진단을 받았던 그는 다음 해 병에 차도가 있어 순회공연을 시작했습니다. 몇 달 후 암이 재발하여 생존 가능성이 희박했지만 놀랍게도 그는 다시 회복되어 암 완치 판정을 받았습니다. 하지만 2022년 2월 19일, 나이트버드는 세상을 떠났습니다.

나이트버드는 이 힘든 여정 중에 블로그에 이렇게 썼습니다. “이스라엘 백성들이 수십 년 동안 길을 잃고 헤매게 내버려두신 하나님께 나 역시 기도하고 있다는 사실을 떠올린다. 그들은 약속의 땅에 도착하게 해달라고 간절히 기도했지만... 하나님은 그들이 하지 않은 기도에 응답하시며 계속 광야를 방황하게 하셨다... 하나님은 매일 아침 그들에게 하늘에서 자비의 떡을 내려주셨다... 나도 그 자비의 떡을 기대한다... 이스라엘 백성들은 그것을 만나라고 불렀는데, 그것은 ‘이것이 무엇인가?’라는 뜻이다. 나 역시 같은 질문을 하고 있다... 여기 어딘가에 자비가 있을 텐데, 그것이 무엇일까?”

출애굽기는 하나님의 자비에 대해 많은 것을 보여줍니다. 첫째, 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 자비를 약속하셨습니다. “너희는 떡으로 배부르리니” (출애굽기 16:12)라는 약속을 지켰습니다. 둘째, 주님의 자비는 우리를 놀라게 할 수도 있습니다. “그것이 무엇인지 알지 못하여”(15절)라는 말씀처럼 자비는 종종 우리가 기대하는 모습과 다릅니다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 자비입니다. 이스라엘 백성에게 자비는 아침마다 내린 만나로 나타났습니다. 나이트버드의 경우 친구가 선물한 담요와 어머니의 손길이 자비였습니다.

SEARCHING FOR MERCY

Her fans knew her as Nightbirde. Singer-songwriter Jane Kristen Marczewski won a following in 2021 on a popular TV talent show. In 2017, she’d been diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. In 2018, she went into remission. She started touring, but months later the cancer returned, giving her little chance of survival. Amazingly she recovered and was declared cancer-free. But on February 19, 2022, Nightbirde died.

During her difficult journey, she blogged, “I remind myself that I’m praying to the God who let the Israelites stay lost for decades. They begged to arrive . . . but instead He let them wander, answering prayers they didn’t pray. . . . Every morning, He sent them mercy-bread from heaven . . . . I look for the mercybread . . . The Israelites called it manna, which means ‘what is it?’ That’s the same question I’m asking . . . . There’s mercy here somewhere—but what is it?”

The exodus story reveals much about God’s mercy. First, His mercy was promised to the Israelites. “You will be filled with bread” (EXODUS 16:12). And second, His mercy may surprise us. “They did not know what it was” (V. 15). Mercy often doesn’t look like what we think. But it’s mercy nonetheless. For the Israelites, it looked like morning manna. For Nightbirde, she wrote of the gift of a blanket from a friend, and her mother’s hands.

그리스도 안에서 생각을 지키기

2024년 파리 올림픽 1500m 자유형 경기에서 케이티 레데키는 한 바퀴 한 바퀴 돌 때마다 익숙한 선두위치를 유지하고 있었습니다. 약 15분 동안 그녀는 다른 수영 선수들보다 훨씬 앞서 있었고, 홀로 생각에 잠겨 있었습니다. 레데키는 긴 경기 동안 무엇을 생각했을까요? 올림픽 신기록을 세우며 금메달을 딴 직후 가진 인터뷰에서 레데키는 같이 훈련한 동료들을 떠올리며 그들의 이름을 속으로 되뇌었다고 말했습니다.

장거리 수영 선수들만 마음을 올바른 것에 집중해야 하는 것은 아닙니다. 예수를 믿는 우리도 신앙 여정 내내 우리의 생각을 지켜야 합니다.

바울 사도는 빌립보 교회에 “주 안에서 기뻐하고”, “아무것도 염려하지 말고 오직 모든 일에 기도하라”고 권면합니다(빌립보서 4:4, 6). 그 결과는 무엇일까요? “사람의 헤아림을 뛰어 넘는 하나님의 평화가 여러분의 마음과 생각을 그리스도 예수 안에서 지켜 줄 것입니다”(7절, 새번역). 평화의 왕이신 예수님은 우리의 걱정과 근심을 올바른 시각에서 바라보도록 도와주십니다.

바울은 또한 믿는 사람들에게 “무엇에든지 참되며 무엇에든지 경건하며 무엇에든지 옳으며 무엇에든지 정결하며 무엇에든지 사랑할만하며 무엇에든지 칭찬할만하며 무슨 덕이 있든지 무슨 기림이 있든지 이것들을 생각하라”(8절)고 권면합니다.

오늘 하루를 보내면서 무슨 생각을 하며 지내는지 잘 살펴봅시다. 삶 가운데 역사하시는 하나님의 손길을 생각할 때, 우리는 하나님의 축복을 세어보면서 주님을 경배할 수 있습니다.

GUARDING THOUGHTS IN CHRIST

Lap after lap, Katie Ledecky was in a familiar spot during the 1500-meter freestyle race at the 2024 Paris Olympics. For some fifteen minutes, she was far ahead of the rest of the swimmers and alone with her thoughts. What was Ledecky thinking about during the long race? In an interview conducted immediately following her gold-medal-winning performance in which she set a new Olympic record, Ledecky said she was thinking about her training partners and saying their names in her head.

Distance swimmers aren’t the only ones who need to focus their minds on the right things. We as believers in Jesus also need to guard our thoughts throughout our faith journey.

The apostle Paul encouraged the Philippian church to “rejoice in the Lord,” not be “anxious about anything, but pray about everything (PHILIPPIANS 4:4, 6). The result? “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (V. 7). Jesus, the Prince of Peace, helps put our worries and troubles in perspective.

Paul also encouraged believers: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy— think about such things” (V. 8).

As we go about our day, let’s be aware of our thoughts. When we see God’s hand in our life, we can count our blessings and worship Him.

하나님을 향한 탄식

뉴욕시에 있는 9/11 기념 박물관의 개막 전시를 호기심을 가지고 관람 하면서 나는 끓어오르는 감정을 억누르고 있었습니다. 전시담당자들이 현명하게 어린이들과 가슴 아픈 장면들을 보기 힘들어 하는 분들을 보호하기 위해 차단한 내부 전시실에 들어갔을 때, 더 이상 참을 수 없었습니다. 가슴 아픈 이야기와 죽음의 이야기를 연이어 접하면서 내 마음속에서 탄식의 물결이 솟구쳐 올랐습니다.

그러한 파괴와 고통을 목격하거나 기억할 때, 우리는 하나님께 고통을 호소한 사람들의 울부짖음에 동참할 수 있습니다. 예레미야애가에서도 이 같은 탄식을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 많은 학자들은 예레미야 선지자가 예루살렘이 멸망한 후에 이 책을 쓴 것이라고 믿습니다. 탄탄한 구조를 이룬 이 시를 통해 선지자는 하나님 백성의 고통에 대한 자신의 슬픔과 비탄을 쏟아놓습니다. “여호와여 보시옵소서 내가 환난을 당하여 나의 애를 다 태우고 나의 마음이 상하나이다”(예레미야애가 1:20). 하지만 하나님 만이 죄와 파괴를 다루실 수 있는 유일한 분이심을 알기에 그는 최후의 심판관이신 하나님을 바라봅니다. “그들의 모든 사악함이 주님 앞에 드러나게 해주소서”(22절, 새번역).

이렇게 하나님께 솔직하게 울부짖다 보면 2001년 9월 11일의 비극 같은 고통스런 끔찍한 일이나 현재 일어나고 있는 다른 악한 일들도 이해할 수 있게 됩니다. 우리는 하나님께서 도우시고, 희망을 주시며, 위로하시고, 공의를 행하실 것을 기대합니다.

LAMENTING TO GOD

I viewed the opening displays of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City with curiosity but kept my emotions in check. That changed when we entered the inner exhibit, which the curators have wisely closed off from children and those wanting to shield themselves from the more heartrending images. As I encountered story after story of heartbreak and loss, waves of lament rose within me.

When we witness or remember such destruction and pain, we can join the cries of those who have voiced their distress to God. This includes the words of anguish found in Lamentations, which many scholars believe the prophet Jeremiah wrote after the destruction of Jerusalem. In the tightly formed structure of this poem, he releases his sorrow and grief over the pain of God’s people: “See, Lord, how distressed I am! I am in torment within, and in my heart I am disturbed” (LAMENTATIONS 1:20). And yet he looks to God as the ultimate judge, knowing that only He can deal with the sins and destruction: “Let all their wickedness come before you” (V. 22).

This kind of honest crying out to God can help us to grapple with painful atrocities such as what happened on September 11, 2001, or other current-day evil deeds. We look to God for help, hope, comfort, and justice.

무력함 속에서도 멈추지 않는 기도

아니타 베일리는 아들 제일런에 대한 소셜 미디어 메시지를 보고 마음이 따뜻해졌습니다. “오늘 [교회]에서 환영팀으로 봉사하고 있었는데, 아이를 안고 있는 한 청년이 제게 다가와 저를 포옹했습니다. 저는 잠시 쳐다보다가 그를 알아보고 ‘제일런’이라고 말했어요! 우리는 포옹하고 잠시 이야기를 나눴어요. 정말 멋진 청년이 되었더군요!” 이 환영팀 봉사자는 제일런이 반항적인 시절을 보낼 때부터 잘 알던 분이었습니다. 당시 아니타와 그 남편 에드는 제일런이 반항하며 몇 번의 어리석은 선택을 한 대가로 12년 동안 감옥에 갇히게 되었을 때, 그를 구할 방법이 없어 무력감을 느꼈습니다.

베일리 부부는 무력감을 느꼈지만 그래도 기도를 멈추지 않았습니다. 역대하 20장에서 여호사밧 왕도 마찬가지였습니다. 강력한 적군 연합군에 의해 괴롭힘을 당할 때, 그는 기도회를 소집했습니다(1-4절). “우리 하나님이여, 그들을 징벌하지 아니하시나이까” 그는 기도했습니다. “우리를 치러 오는 이 큰 무리를 우리가 대적할 능력이 없고 어떻게 할 줄도 알지 못하옵고 오직 주만 바라보나이다”(12절).

여러분도 자신이 통제할 수 없는 상황 속에서 무력감이나 막막함을 느낀 적이 있나요? 혼자 또는 다른 사람들과 함께 기도 모임을 가져보는 것은 어떨까요? 그것이 바로 예수님께서 십자가를 앞둔 순간 하신 일입니다(누가복음 22:39-44). 기도 공간은 전능하신 하나님께 예수님의 이름으로 힘없는 사람들의 간구를 드리는 거룩한 장소입니다.

POWERLESS BUT NOT PRAYERLESS

Anita Bailey’s heart was warmed when she got this social media message about her son Jalen: “I was a greeter today at [church] and a young man with a child in his arms came up to me and put his arms around me. . . . I stared for a second, then I recognized him and said, ‘Jalen!’ We embraced and chatted briefly. What a fine young man!” The greeter knew Jalen from his rebellious days when Anita and her husband, Ed, had felt powerless to save their son from the consequences of his unwise choices, which had resulted in twelve years in prison for him.

Though the Baileys felt powerless, they were not prayerless. And neither was King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20. When harassed by a menacing coalition of enemy forces, he called a prayer meeting (VV. 1-4). “Our God, will you not judge them?” he prayed. “For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (V. 12).

Have you ever felt powerless or clueless in the face of circumstances that were out of your control? Why not call a prayer meeting—either alone or with others? That’s what Jesus did in the face of His coming crucifixion (LUKE 22:39-44). Prayer space is the sacred place where the petitions of powerless people are offered to our almighty God in the name of Jesus.

예수님을 부끄러워하지 않는다

순교를 당하기 전, 이름이 알려지지 않은 한 아프리카 목사님이 “순교자의 기도”를 썼습니다. 이 심오한 글은 시간이 지나면서 “부끄러워하지 않는 자들의 교제”로 알려지게 되었습니다.

이 목사님의 글은 예수를 믿는 모든 신자들에게 도전이 되며, 바울 사도가 젊은 제자 디모데에게 보낸 편지에서 한 말과도 일맥상통합니다. 바울은 “우리 주를 증언함에... 부끄러워하지 말라”(디모데후서 1:8)고 말하며, 성령은 우리에게 “능력과 사랑과 절제하는 마음”(7절)을 주셨다고 강조합니다.

UNASHAMED FOR JESUS

Before he was martyred for his steadfast faith in Jesus, an African minister whose name has not been preserved penned “A Martyr’s Prayer.” This profound message from another era has become known as “The Fellowship of the Unashamed.”

This pastor’s words present a challenge to all believers in Jesus—a challenge that echoes the words of the apostle Paul, who wrote in his letter to his young friend Timothy: “Do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord” (2 TIMOTHY 1:8) because the Holy Spirit gives us “power, love and self-discipline” (V. 7).

Here, in part, is what that faithful African pastor wrote: “I am part of the fellowship of the unashamed. The decision has been made. I am a disciple of [Jesus] and I won’t back up, let up, slow down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed. My present makes sense. My future is secure. . . . I live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by the Holy Spirit’s power.”

Both Timothy and that pastor faced difficulties we may never experience, but their words challenge us to stand strong when our faith is tested. We can remain unashamed because God “is able to guard what [we] have entrusted to him” (V. 12)—our lives and our future.

서로를 위해 기도할 준비

하이에나 무리가 홀로 있는 암사자를 에워쌌습니다. 이 시끄러운 짐승들이 물리치려고 필사적으로 물고, 할퀴고, 으르렁거리고 울부짖다가 결국 쓰러지고 말았습니다. 하이에나 무리가 암사자를 에워쌌고, 바로 그때 다른 암사자가 세 마리의 다른 사자들과 함께 쓰러진 암사자를 구하러 왔습니다. 수적으로 열세였지만, 하이에나들을 몰아낼 때까지 싸웠습니다. 마치 또 다른 공격을 예상하듯 암사자들은 지평선을 바라보며 함께 자리를 지켰습니다.

예수님을 따르는 성도들도 이같이 서로의 도움이 절실히 필요합니다. 우리가 줄 수 있는 가장 강력한 도움은 기도입니다. 바울 사도는 로마 교회에 이같이 편지를 썼습니다. “형제들아 내가 우리 주 예수 그리스도와 성령의 사랑 으로 말미암아 너희를 권하노니 너희 기도에 나와 힘을 같이하여 나를 위하여 하나님께 빌라”(로마서 15:30). 바울은 예수께서 “유대에서 순종하지 아니하는 자들로부터 건짐을 받게” 기도하고 “성도들”이 바울이 섬기는 일을 “받을 만하게” 하기를 기도하라고 부탁했습니다(31절). 바울은 하나님의 나라에 속하게 됨으로써 얻는 보상을 알고 있었습니다(32절). 바울은 또한 “평강의 하나님께서 너희 모든 사람과 함께 계실지어다”(33절)라고 축복으로 그의 편지를 마무리하며, 기도로 성도들과 연합했습니다.

예수님을 믿고 살아갈 때, 우리는 육체적 그리고 영적 영역에서 적대적인 사람들과 마주하게 됩니다. 하나님은 우리와 함께하시며 우리를 대신해 싸워 주신다고 약속하십니다. 하지만, 우리는 함께 서서 항상 기도할 준비가 되어 있어야 합니다.

READY TO PRAY

A pack of hyenas surrounded a lone lioness. When the cackling beasts attacked, the lioness fought back. Biting, clawing, growling, and roaring in a desperate attempt to ward off her enemies, she finally fell. As the clan engulfed her, another lioness came to the rescue with three helpers only seconds behind her. Though outnumbered, the big cats fought off the hyenas until they scattered. The lionesses stood together, scanning the horizon as if expecting another attack.

Believers in Jesus desperately need help from others too. The most powerful help we can offer is prayer. The apostle Paul wrote in a letter to the church in Rome, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me” (ROMANS 15:30). Paul asked them to pray that he would “be kept safe from the unbelievers in Judea” and that the “Lord’s people” would receive him and his gifts “favorably” (V. 31). He acknowledged the rewards of being a part of their community (V. 32). He stood with them in prayer, too, ending his letter with a blessing: “The God of peace be with you all” (V. 33).

As we live for Jesus, we’ll face adversaries in the physical and spiritual realms. God promises to be with us and fight on our behalf, however, as we stand together . . . always ready to pray.

그리스도의 진리를 받아들이기

내 친구 카너는 오래된 필름 카메라로 사진을 찍을 때, 멋진 조명을 찾거나 잡티를 지우거나 보기 좋지 않은 부분을 잘라내려 하지 않습니다. 그의 사진들은 놀라울 정도로 사실적입니다. 그의 작품은 소셜미디어에서 보정된 멋진 인물과 풍경 사진들 사이에서 눈에 띕니다. 다소 색다른 방식이지만, 그의 사진은 진실을 담고 있기에 아름답습니다.

우리는 모두 진실을 갈망하지만, 때때로 그 진실이 우리에게 매력적으로 보이지 않을 수 있습니다. 예수님께서 십자가의 죽음을 앞두고 계셨을 때, “내가 곧 진리다”(요한복음 14:6)라고 선언하셨습니다. 제자들은 예수님께서 그토록 간절히 말씀하신 아버지의 집에 어떻게 갈 수 있는지 궁금해했습니다 (2-3절). 그들은 자신들 앞에 서 계신 예수님이 바로 그 해답이라는 사실을 깨닫지 못했습니다. 그들은 예수님께서 자신의 희생을 통해 승리하실 것을 이해하지 못했습니다.

EMBRACING CHRIST’S TRUTH

When my friend Connor takes pictures on his old film camera, he doesn’t bother to find attractive lighting or airbrush blemishes or crop out anything unsightly. His photos are startlingly raw. They stand out in my social media feed next to heavily edited photos of gorgeous people and places. Though unconventional, his work is beautiful because it communicates truth about how things really are.

We all long for what’s real, but sometimes the truth isn’t attractive to us. Close to the time of His death, Jesus declared, “I am . . . the truth” (JOHN 14:6). His disciples were wondering how they could get to the Father’s house that Jesus spoke so longingly about (VV. 2-3). They failed to see that Jesus standing in front of them was the answer. They struggled to understand that He would bring victory through His own sacrifice.

Isaiah prophesied that the coming Messiah would have no beauty or majesty, “nothing in his appearance that we should desire him” (ISAIAH 53:2). Much of what Jesus said was so challenging and unexpected that it turned religious people against Him (JOHN 11:45-48). Yet He gave an open invitation to know the truth and find real life. “If you really know me,” said Jesus, “you will know my Father as well” (JOHN 14:7). In the midst of an airbrushed and unrealistic world, we can embrace that beautiful, raw truth today!
