기도의 말문이 막힐 때

어린 남동생이 수술을 받을 때 걱정이 되었습니다. 어머니는 동생이 선천적으로 “짧은 혀”(설유착증)를 가지고 태어나, 수술을 받지 않고는 먹는 것과 결국에는 말하는 것이 힘들어질 거라고 말했습니다. 오늘날에는 할 말을 잃거나 너무 수줍어 말을 못하는 것을 묘사할 때 짧은 혀를 가졌다(말문이 막혔다)고 말합니다.

때때로 우리는 기도할 때 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰라 말문이 막히기도 합니다. 입술로는 상투적인 표현과 반복적인 문구만 되풀이하고, 마음은 천국을 향해도 하나님이 과연 들으실까 의문을 품기도 합니다. 그리고 우리의 생각은 초점을 잃고 갈팡질팡합니다.

바울 사도는 1세기 때 로마 교회의 신자들에게 쓴 편지에서 우리가 어떻게 기도할지 몰라 힘들 때 성령님의 도움을 구하라고 권면합니다. “성령도 우리의 연약함을 도우시나니 우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직 성령이 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 친히 간구하시느니라”(로마서 8:26). 여기서 “도움”이라는 개념은 무거운 짐을 덜어준다는 것입니다. 그리고 “말할 수 없는 탄식”은 우리의 필요를 하나님께 가져가는 성령님의 중보를 가리킵니다.

기도 중에 말문이 막힐 때 성령님은 우리의 혼란과 고통, 산만함을 다듬어서 우리의 마음에서 하나님의 귀로 전달해주는 완벽한 기도로 만들어줍니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도를 들으시고 응답해 주시며, 우리가 성령님께 기도해달라고 요청할 때까지 필요한지조차 몰랐을 바로 그 위로를 가져다 주십니다.

TONGUE-TIED IN PRAYER

When my baby brother underwent surgery, I was concerned. My mother explained that “tongue-tie” (ankyloglossia) was a condition he was born with and that without help, his ability to eat and eventually to speak would be hindered. Today we use the term tongue-tied to describe being at a loss for words or too shy to speak.

Sometimes we can be tongue-tied in prayer, not knowing what to say. Our tongues tie up in spiritual clichés and repetitive phrases. We arrow our emotions heavenward, wondering if they will reach
God’s ears. Our thoughts zigzag along an unfocused path.

Writing to first-century Roman believers in Christ, the apostle Paul addressed what to do when we struggle to know how to pray, inviting us to find help from the Holy Spirit. “The Spirit helps us in
our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (ROMANS 8:26). The concept of “help” here is to carry a heavy load. And “wordless groans” indicates an interceding presence as the Spirit carries our needs to God.

When we’re tongue-tied in prayer, God’s Spirit helps shape our confusion, pain, and distraction into the perfect prayer that moves from our hearts to God’s ears. He listens and answers, bringing the exact kind of comfort we may not have known we needed until we asked Him to pray for us. - ELISA MORGAN

안전한 주의 손

마치 밧줄의 올이 풀리는 것처럼 덕 머키의 삶의 올 또한 하나씩 끊어졌습니다. 목사이자 조각가였던 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “어머니는 오랜 암 투병으로 돌아가셨고, 오랜 연인도 떠나갔습니다. 내 재정 형편은 바닥이 드러났고, 직업 또한 불투명해졌습니다... 내 주변과 내 내면의 정서적, 영적 어두움이 너무 심해서 기진맥진하여 좀처럼 헤어나오지 못할 것 같았습니다.” 이 여러 가지 사건들과 비좁은 다락방에서의 삶이 합쳐져서 ‘은신처’라는 그의 조각품이 탄생할 수 있는 여건이 되어주었습니다. 이 작품은 안전한 장소로서 못 자국이 있는 그리스도의 강인한 두 손이 컵 모양처럼 오므려져 있는 모습을 묘사하고 있습니다.

머키 목사는 이 작품의 디자인에 대해 이렇게 설명했습니다. “이 조각품은 그의 손 안에 숨으라는 그리스도의 초대입니다.” 시편 32편에서 다윗은 궁극적으로 안전한 장소, 곧 하나님 그분을 찾았다고 기록했습니다. 하나님은 우리의 죄를 용서하시고(1-5절), 혼란 가운데서도 그분께 기도하라고 권면하십니다(6절). 7절에서 시편 기자는 하나님을 향한 신뢰를 이렇게 선언합니다. “주는 나의 은신처이오니 환난에서 나를 보호하시고 구원의 노래로 나를 두르시리이다.”

어려운 일이 생길 때 어디로 향합니까? 이 세상에 존재케 해주는 연약한 끈이 풀리기 시작할 때 예수님의 용서의 사역으로 영원한 안전을 제공해주신 하나님께로 달려갈 수 있다는 사실이 얼마나 감사한지 모릅니다.

하나님 아버지, 하나님 없이 살아가려고 했던 저의 날들을 하나님은 아십니다. 안전을 위한 저의 그릇된 계획을 버리고 곧바로 아버지께 달려갈 수 있도록 도와주소서.

SAFE HANDS

Like the unraveling of a rope, the threads of Doug Merkey’s life were breaking one by one. “My mother had lost her prolonged battle with cancer; a long-term romantic relationship was failing; my finances were depleted; my vocation was foggy. . . . The emotional and spiritual darkness around me and within me was deep and debilitating and seemingly impenetrable,” the pastor and sculptor wrote. These collective events, combined with living in a cramped attic, became the setting from which his sculpture The Hiding Place emerged. It depicts Christ’s strong, nailed-scarred hands openly cupped together as a place of safety.

Doug explained the design of his artwork this way: The “sculpture is Christ’s invitation to hide in Him.” In Psalm 32, David wrote as one who had found the ultimate safe place—God Himself. He offers us forgiveness from our sin (VV. 1–5) and encourages us to offer prayer in the midst of tumult (V. 6). In verse 7, the psalmist declares his trust in God: “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”

When trouble shows up, where do you turn? How good it is to know that when the fragile cords of our earthly existence begin to unravel, we can run to the God who has provided eternal safety through the forgiving work of Jesus. - ARTHUR JACKSON

흔들리지 않는 믿음

케빈은 아버지가 돌아가신 후 유품을 가지러 요양 시설을 찾아갔었는데, 직원이 작은 상자 두 개를 건네 주었습니다. 그는 진정 소유가 많아야 행복한 것은 아니라는 사실을 그날 깨달았다고 말했습니다.

생전에 그의 아버지 래리는 근심이 없었고 항상 미소를 지으며 다른 사람들을 격려해주었습니다. 아버지가 그렇게 행복할 수 있었던 이유는 상자에 넣을 수 없는 다른 “소유물”, 곧 구주 예수님을 향한 흔들림 없는
믿음 때문이었습니다.

예수님은 우리에게 “보물을 하늘에 쌓아두라”(마태복음 6:20)고 권면하십니다. 그렇다고 우리가 집이나 차를 사거나 미래를 위해 저축하거나 많은 재산을 가져서는 안 된다고 하신 것은 아니었습니다. 예수님은 우리 마음의 중심을 살피라고 강조하신 것입니다. 아버지 래리는 어디에 초점을 맞추고 살았을까요? 그의 마음은 다른 사람을 사랑함으로써 하나님을 사랑하는데 맞춰져 있었습니다. 그는 자신이 지내고 있던 복도를 왔다 갔다 하면서 마주치는 사람들에게 인사를 나누고 격려했습니다. 누군가 울고 있으면 위로의 말을 건네거나 들어주었고 진심으로 기도해 주었습니다. 그의 마음은 하나님의 영광과 다른 사람들의 선을 위해 사는 데 집중되어 있었습니다.

하나님과 이웃들을 사랑하는 보다 중요한 일을 방해하고 혼란스럽게 하는 하잘것없는 것들로 우리가 과연 행복할 수 있을지 자문해 볼 필요가 있습니다. “[우리의] 보물 있는 그 곳에는 [우리의] 마음도 있느니라”(21절).
우리가 어떻게 사는가를 보면 우리가 무엇에 더 가치를 두는가가 나타납니다.

UNSHAKABLE FAITH

Kevin walked into the nursing facility after his dad passed away to pick up his belongings. The staff handed him two small boxes. He said he realized that day that it really didn’t take an abundance of possessions to be happy.

His dad, Larry, had been carefree and always ready with a smile and an encouraging word for others. The reason for his happiness was another “possession” that didn’t fit into a box: an unshakable faith in his Redeemer, Jesus.

Jesus urges us to “store up . . . treasures in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:20). He didn’t say we couldn’t own a home or buy a car or save for the future or have numerous possessions. But He urged us to examine the focus of our hearts. Where was Larry’s focus? His heart was set on loving God by loving others. He would wander up and down the halls where he lived, greeting and encouraging those he met. If someone was in tears, he was there with a comforting word or listening ear or heartfelt prayer. His mind was focused on living for God’s honor and the good of others.

We might want to ask ourselves if we could be happy with fewer things that clutter and distract us from the more important matters of loving God and others. “Where [our] treasure is, there [our] heart will be also” (V. 21). What we value is reflected in how we live. - ANNE CETAS

하나님이 주시는 격려

1925년, 작가를 꿈꾸며 호텔에서 웨이터 보조로 일하고 있던 랭스턴 휴즈는 그가 존경하는 시인 바첼 린지가 그 호텔에 투숙한 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 휴즈는 자신이 쓴 시 몇 편을 린지에게 수줍게 건넸는데, 린지는 나중에 공개석상에서 그 시들을 격찬했습니다. 린지의 격려로 휴즈는 대학 장학금을 받게 되었고, 이후 성공적인 작가로서의 경력을 쌓을 수 있게 되었습니다.

작은 격려가 큰 도움이 될 수 있는데, 특히 하나님이 함께 하실 때면 더욱 그렇습니다. 성경은 다윗이 “그의 생명을 빼앗으려” 하는 사울 왕으로부터 도망칠 때 있었던 일에 대해 말해줍니다. 그때 사울의 아들 요나단이 다윗을 찾아와서 “그에게 하나님을 힘 있게 의지하게 하였는데 곧 요나단이 그에게 이르기를 ‘두려워하지 말라 내 아버지 사울의 손이 네게 미치지 못할 것이요 너는 이스라엘 왕이 되리라’”고 하였습니다(사무엘상 23:15-17).

요나단이 옳았습니다. 다윗은 왕이 될 것이었습니다. 요나단이 준 격려가 효력이 있었던 주 요인은 “하나님 안에서”(16 절)라는 간단한 구절에서 찾을 수 있습니다. 하나님은 예수님을 통하여 우리에게 “영원한 위로와 좋은 소망”을 주십니다(데살로니가후서 2:16). 우리가 하나님 앞에서 겸손하게 몸을 낮출 때 하나님은 우리를 일으켜 세워주십니다. 어느 누구도 그렇게 할 수 없습니다.

우리 주위에는 하나님께서 주시는 격려가 필요한 사람들이 많습니다. 요나단이 다윗을 찾은 것처럼 우리도 그들을 찾아 친절한 말과 행동으로 하나님께 인도하면 나머지는 하나님께서 해주실 것입니다. 이 세상에서의 삶이 어떻든, 그분을 신뢰하는 사람들에게는 영원한 밝은 미래가 기다리고 있습니다.

ENCOURAGED IN GOD

In 1925, Langston Hughes, an aspiring writer working as a busboy at a hotel, discovered that a poet he admired (Vachel Lindsey) was staying there as a guest. Hughes shyly slipped Lindsey some of his own poetry, which Lindsey later praised enthusiastically at a public reading. Lindsey’s encouragement resulted in Hughes receiving a university scholarship, furthering him on his way to his own successful writing career.

A little encouragement can go a long way, especially when God is in it. Scripture tells of an incident when David was on the run from King Saul, who was trying “to take his life.” Saul’s son Jonathan sought David out “and helped him find strength in God. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel’ ” (1 SAMUEL 23:15–17).

Jonathan was right. David would be king. The key to the effective encouragement Jonathan offered is found in the simple phrase “in God” (V. 16). Through Jesus, God gives us “eternal encouragement and good hope” (2 THESSALONIANS 2:16). As we humble ourselves before Him, He lifts us as no other can.

All around us are people who need the encouragement God gives. If we seek them out as Jonathan sought David and gently point them to God through a kind word or action, He’ll do the rest. Regardless of what this life may hold, a bright future in - JAMES BANKS

2013년, 영국 배우 데이비드 슈쉐이는 작가 애거사 크리스티의 추리물의 주인공인 벨기에 형사 에르뀔 푸아로 역을 맡아 TV 시리즈 최종분을 촬영하고 있었고, 연극 무대에서도 “[그의] 인생에서 가장 큰 역할” 을 맡고 있었습니다. 이런 작품들에 출연하면서도 별도로 그는 창세기부터 요한계시록까지 752,702단어에 이르는 성경 전체의 오디오 버전을 200시간 넘게 걸려 녹음했습니다.

어느 호텔 방에 있던 성경에서 로마서를 읽고 예수님을 믿게 된 슈쉐이는 그 오디오 성경 프로젝트야말로 “27년이 걸린 야망”의 성취라고 말했습니다. “나는 그 프로젝트에 전적으로 매달렸습니다. 나는 성경 낭송을 위해 하나하나 꼼꼼히 준비했기 때문에 문제없이 진행할 수 있었습니다.” 낭송 사업을 마치고 나서 슈쉐이는 그 일로 받은 보수를 모두 기부했습니다.

슈쉐이의 오디오 성경은 그가 받은 은사를 잘 활용하여 나눔으로써 어떻게 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있는지 보여주는 감동적인 일화입니다. 베드로는 초대교회 신자들에게 보낸 편지에서 바로 그와 같은 충직한 청지기의 삶을 살라고 강권했습니다. 가이사가 아닌 예수님을 경배했기 때문에 박해를 받은 당시 신자들은 그들의 영적 은사를 양육하여 하나님을 위한 삶에 집중하라는 도전을 받고 있었습니다. “만일 누가 말하려면 하나님의 말씀을 하는 것 같이 하라”(베드로전서 4:11). 우리는 다른 모든 은사처럼 우리가 받은 은사들을 잘 개발함으로써 “범사에 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님이 영광을 받으시게” 할 수 있습니다.

슈쉐이는 그가 받은 재능을 하나님께 드렸습니다. 우리도 똑같이 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 하나님이 당신에게 무슨 재능을 주셨든, 하나님의 영광을 위해서 그것을 잘 활용하십시오.

MANAGING OUR GIFTS

In 2013, British actor David Suchet was filming the final TV episodes as Agatha Christie’s beloved Belgian detective Hercule Poirot—and also starring in a stage play—when he took on “the biggest role in [his] life.” Between those projects he recorded an audio version of the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation—752,702 words—over two hundred hours.

Suchet, who became a believer in Jesus after reading the book of Romans in a Bible he found in a hotel room, called the project the fulfillment of “a 27-year-long ambition. I felt totally driven. I
did so much research on every part of it that I couldn’t wait to get going.” Then he donated his wages.

His recording remains an inspiring example of how to glorify God by stewarding a gift, then sharing it. Peter urged such stewardship in his letter to first-century believers. Persecuted for worshiping Jesus, not Caesar, they were challenged to focus instead on living for God by nurturing their spiritual gifts. “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God” (1 PETER 4:11). Like all gifts, we can develop them “so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”

Suchet offered his talents to God. We can do the same. Whatever God has given to you, manage it well for His glory. - PATRICIA RAYBON

우정 어린 대화

캐서린은 고등학교 때 친했던 친구였습니다. 우리는 전화통화를 하지 않을 때면 수업 중에 쪽지를 주고받으며 다음 번 같이 밤을 보낼 계획을 짰습니다. 때로는 함께 승마를 하거나 학교 프로젝트의 파트너가 되기도 했습니다.

어느 주일 오후 캐서린에 대해 생각하기 시작했습니다. 그날 아침 목사님이 어떻게 영생을 얻는지에 대해 설교하셨는데, 내 친구는 나와 달리 성경의 가르침을 곧이곧대로 믿지 않았습니다. 친구에게 전화를 걸어 예수님과 어떻게 관계를 맺을 수 있는지 설명해야겠다고 생각했지만, 내가 하는 말을 거부하고 나를 멀리할까 봐 두려워서 망설여졌습니다.

많은 경우 이런 두려움 때문에 우리는 침묵하게 된다고 생각합니다. 심지어 바울 사도도 사람들에게 그가 “복음의 비밀을 담대히 알리게”(에베소서 6:19) 해달라고 기도를 부탁할 정도였습니다. 복음을 전할 때 생기는 위험을 피할 수는 없지만, 그럼에도 바울은 스스로를 하나님을 대신해서 말하는 “사신”이라고 말했습니다(20절). 우리 또한 사신입니다. 그래서 사람들이 우리의 메시지를 거부한다면 그 메시지를 보내신 분도 함께 거부하는 것입니다. 하나님도 우리와 함께 고통을 경험하십니다.

그러면 무엇이 우리로 담대히 말하도록 만들어 줄까요? 그것은 하나님이 우리를 아끼시는 것처럼(베드로후서 3:9), 사람들을 아끼는 마음입니다. 내가 캐서린에게 전화를 건 것도 바로 그 때문이었습니다. 놀랍게도 친구는 내 말을 막지 않고, 경청하며 질문도 했습니다. 그리고 예수님께 자신의 죄를 용서해 주시기를 간구하며 주님을 위해 살기로 결심했습니다. 그 위험은 충분히 보상 받을 만큼 가치가 있었습니다.

A FRIENDLY CONVERSATION

Catherine and I were good friends in high school. When we weren’t talking on the phone, we were passing notes in class to plan our next sleepover. Sometimes we rode horses together and partnered on school projects.

One Sunday afternoon, I started to think about Catherine. My pastor had spoken that morning about how to have eternal life, and I knew my friend didn’t believe the Bible’s teachings the way I did. I felt a burden to call her and explain how she could have a relationship with Jesus. I hesitated, though, because I was afraid she would reject what I said and distance herself from me.

I think this fear keeps a lot of us quiet. Even the apostle Paul had to ask people to pray that he would “fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel” (EPHESIANS 6:19). There’s no getting around the risk involved with sharing the good news, yet Paul said he was “an ambassador”—someone speaking on behalf of God (V. 20). We are too. If people reject our message, they’re also rejecting the One who sent the message. God experiences the sting along with us.

So what compels us to speak up? We care about people, like God does (2 PETER 3:9). That’s what led me to finally call Catherine. Amazingly, she didn’t shut me down. She listened. She asked questions. She asked Jesus to forgive her sin and decided to live for Him. The risk was worth the reward.

CHOOSING CELEBRATION

Writer Marilyn McEntyre shares the story of learning from a friend that “the opposite of envy is celebration.” Despite this friend’s physical disability and chronic pain, which limited her ability to develop her talents in the ways she’d hoped, she was somehow able to uniquely embody joy and to celebrate with others, bringing “appreciation into every encounter” before she passed away.

That insight—“the opposite of envy is celebration”—lingers with me, reminding me of friends in my own life who seem to live out this kind of comparison-free, deep, and genuine joy for others.

Envy is an easy trap to fall into. It feeds on our deepest vulnerabilities, wounds, and fears, whispering that if we were only more like so-and-so, we wouldn’t be struggling, and we wouldn’t be feeling bad.

As Peter reminded new believers in 1 Peter 2, the only way to “rid [ourselves]” of the lies that envy tells us is to be deeply rooted in the truth, to “have tasted”—deeply experienced—“that the Lord is good” (VV. 1–3). We can “love one another deeply, from the heart” (1:22) when we know the true source of our joy—“the living and enduring word of God” (V. 23).

We can surrender comparison when we remember who we really are—beloved members of “a chosen people, . . . God’s special possession.” We’re called “out of darkness into his wonderful light” (2:9).

THE JOY OF GOOD NEWS

One evening in 1964, the Great Alaska earthquake shocked and writhed for more than four minutes, registering a 9.2 magnitude. In Anchorage, whole city blocks disappeared, leaving only massive craters and rubble. Through the dark, terrifying night, news reporter Genie Chance stood at her microphone, passing along messages to desperate people sitting by their radios: a husband working in the bush heard that his wife was alive; distraught families heard that their sons on a Boy Scout camping trip were okay; a couple heard that their children had been found. The radio crackled with line after line of good news—pure joy amid the ruin.

This must have been something like what Israel felt when they heard these words from the prophet Isaiah: “The Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor” (61:1). As they looked over the wasteland of their wrecked lives and grim future, Isaiah’s clear voice brought good news at the very moment when all seemed lost. God intended to “bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives. . . . [To] rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated” (VV. 1, 4). In the midst of their terror, the people heard God’s assuring promise, His good news.

For us today, it’s in Jesus that we hear God’s good news—this is what the word gospel means. Into our fears, pains, and failures, He delivers good news. And our distress gives way to joy.

PART OF THE FAMILY

Downton Abbey was a popular British television drama that followed the fictional Crawley family as they navigated a changing social structure in early 1900s England. One of the key characters, Tom Branson, initially worked as the family’s chauffeur before shocking everyone by marrying the youngest Crawley daughter. Following a period of exile, the young couple returned to Downton Abbey and Tom became part of the family, gaining access to rights and privileges he had been denied as an employee.

We were once considered “foreigners and strangers” (EPHESIANS 2:19) and excluded from the rights given to those who are part of God’s family. But because of Jesus, all believers, regardless of their background, are reconciled to God and called “members of his household” (V. 19).

Being a member of God’s family brings incredible rights and privileges. We can “approach God with freedom and confidence” (3:12) and enjoy unlimited, unhindered access to God. We become part of a larger family, a community of faith to support and encourage us (2:19–22). Members of God’s family have the privilege of helping each other grasp the enormity of God’s lavish love (3:18).

Fear or doubt could easily make us feel like an outsider, keeping us from fully accessing the benefits of being part of God’s family. But hear and embrace once more the reality of God’s free and generous gifts of love (2:8–10) and bask in the wonder of being His.

겨울잠쥐가 코를 씰룩거렸습니다. 무언가 맛있는 것이 근처에 있었습니다. 아니나 다를까, 맛있는 씨앗이 가득한 새 모이통에서 그 향기가 흘러나오고 있었습니다. 겨울잠쥐는 모이통을 매달고 있는 줄을 타고 내려가 문으로 미끄러져 들어가서 밤새 씨앗을 먹고 또 먹었습니다. 그는 아침이 되어서야 자신이 곤경에 처했다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 새들이 모이통의 문을 통해 그를 쪼아대고 있었는데, 씨앗을 잔뜩 먹은 쥐는 몸집이 두 배나 되어 있어 도망칠 수가 없었습니다.

AVOID THE DOOR

The dormouse’s nose twitched. Something tasty was nearby. Sure enough, the scent led to a birdfeeder full of delicious seed. The dormouse climbed down the chain to the feeder, slipped through the door, and ate and ate all night. Only in the morning did he realize the trouble he was in. Birds now pecked at him through the feeder’s door, but having gorged on the seed, he was now twice his size and unable to escape.

Doors can lead us to wonderful places—or dangerous ones. A door features prominently in Solomon’s advice in Proverbs 5 on avoiding sexual temptation. While sexual sin may be enticing, he says, trouble awaits if it’s pursued (5:3–6). Best to stay far from it, for if you walk through that door you’ll be trapped, your honor lost, your wealth pecked away by strangers (VV. 7–11). Solomon counsels us to enjoy the intimacy of our own spouse instead (VV. 15–20). His advice can apply to sin more broadly too (VV. 21–23). Whether it’s the temptation to overeat, overspend, or something else, God can help us to avoid the door that leads to entrapment.

The dormouse must’ve been happy when the homeowner found him in her garden birdfeeder and freed him. Thankfully, God’s
hand is also ready to free us when we’re trapped. But let’s call on His strength to avoid the door of entrapment in the first place.
