비극 속에서 피어난 아름다움

잉글랜드의 아름다운 호수 지역에 위치한 코니스톤 워터는 많은 영국 가족들이 즐겨 찾는 휴양지입니다. 이 호수는 보트타기, 수영, 그리고 다양한 수상 스포츠를 즐기기에 완벽한 장소입니다. 하지만 이 아름다운 장소는 큰 비극의 현장이기도 했습니다. 1967년, 도널드 캠벨이 수상활주 속도 세계기록을 깨기 위해 수상활주정 ‘블루버드 K7’을 조종했습니다. 그는 시속 528 km라는 최고 속도를 달성했지만 그 성과를 축하할 겨를도 없이 ‘블루버드’ 가 충돌했고, 목숨을 잃었습니다.

비극은 아름다운 장소에서도 일어날 수 있습니다. 창세기 2장에서, 창조주 하나님은 “그 사람을 이끌어 에덴 동산에 두어 그것을 경작하며 지키게 하셨습니다” (15절). 이 동산은 하나님의 걸작이었지만, 이 낙원에 살게 된 남자와 여자가 하나님께 불순종함으로써 하나님의 창조세계에 죄와 사망을 가져왔습니다 (3:6-7). 오늘날까지도 우리는 그들의 비극적인 선택이 초래한 파괴적인 결과를 계속해서 보고 있습니다.

하지만 예수님은 죄로 말미암아 죽을 수밖에 없는 우리에게 생명을 주시려고 오셨습니다. 바울 사도는 이를 가리켜 “한 사람[아담]이 순종하지 아니함으로 많은 사람이 죄인 된 것 같이 한 사람[예수 그리스도]이 순종하심으로 많은 사람이 의인이 되리라”(로마서 5:19)고 설파했습니다. “예수님으로 말미암아 가장 아름다운 우리 본향으로 돌아갈 수 있게 되었습니다.

아름다움 속에서 비극이 일어났지만, 하나님의 은혜로 비극 속에서 영원한 아름다움이 피어났습니다.

BEAUTY OUT OF TRAGEDY

Coniston Water in England’s beautiful Lake District is a favorite vacation spot for families in the UK. The waters are perfect for boating, swimming, and other water sports. That beautiful setting, however, was also the site of great tragedy. In 1967, Donald Campbell was piloting his hydroplane Bluebird K7, seeking to break the world water speed record. He reached a top speed of 328 mph (528 km/h) but didn’t live to celebrate the achievement as Bluebird crashed, killing Campbell.

Tragic moments can happen in beautiful places. In Genesis 2, the Creator “took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” (V. 15). The garden was a masterpiece, yet when placed in this paradise, the man and woman disobeyed God, bringing sin and death into His creation (3:6-7). Today, we continue to see the destructive effects of their tragic choice.

But Jesus came to offer life to us—people who were dead in our sins. The apostle Paul, referring to that, wrote, “Just as through the disobedience of the one man [Adam] the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man [Jesus Christ] the many will be made righteous” (ROMANS 5:19). Because of Jesus, the most beautiful home of all awaits us.

Out of beauty came tragedy. And by God’s grace, out of tragedy came eternal beauty.

우리의 믿음직한 피난처 하나님

우리 딸이 가장 선명하게 기억하는 어린 시절의 추억 중 하나는 아빠가 보조바퀴 없이 자전거 타는 법을 가르쳐 준 날입니다. 그 날, 남편은 딸의 자전거 뒷바퀴 축에 발을 올리고 (딸은 페달을 밟고 둘이서 핸들을 잡은 채로) 완만한 경사의 작은 언덕을 함께 내려갔습니다. 딸은 그 순간 두려움 속에 있었던 자기와 매우 대조적으로 기쁨에 겨운 아빠의 웃음 소리를 기억합니다. 자전거는 순식간에 언덕 밑에 도착했고 너무 짧은 순간이라 남편이 딸의 마음을 헤아려 공감대를 형성할 겨를이 없었습니다. 지금 그 일을 함께 회상하면서, 다른 감정을 기억하는 딸에게 남편은 모든 것이 괜찮을 걸 알고 있었다며 다정하게 다독여 줍니다.

이 이야기는 우리가 삶에서 두려움을 느끼는 순간을 잘 보여주는 비유 입니다. 우리 관점에서 “언덕”은 크고 두렵게 보일 수 있고, 다칠 위험성도 매우 실감나게 느껴집니다. 하지만 성경은 “여호와께서 [우리와] 함께 하시니” 우리가 “두려워하지” 않아도 된다고 확신시켜 줍니다(시편 118:6, 현대인의 성경). 사람의 도움으로는 우리가 실패할 수 있지만, 하나님은 우리가 두려움에 완전히 사로잡혀 있을 때 신뢰할 수 있는 피난처가 되십니다(8-9절).

하나님은 우리를 “돕는 자들 중에 계시니”(7절), 삶의 가장 힘들고 두려운 순간에도 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 넘어지고, 상처받고, 고통을 겪을지라도, 우리를 구원하시는 주님의 임재는 우리의 “힘”과 “방패”가 되십니다(14절).

GOD, OUR TRUSTWORTHY REFUGE

One of my daughter’s most vivid childhood memories is the day her dad taught her to ride a bike without training wheels. At one point in their outing, my husband balanced his feet on the hubs of her rear wheel (while she kept hers on the pedals and they shared the handlebars) so they could coast down a small, gently sloping section together. She remembers her dad laughing with joy—a sharp contrast to her own fearful experience of the moment. The ride was so short that the entire episode happened too quickly for him to stop and empathize with her. As they reminisce about the incident today, my husband’s gentle response to her recollection is to reassure her that he knew everything would be okay.

Their story is an apt metaphor for the moments when we too experience fear in life. The “hills” might look big and scary from our vantage point, and the risk of being hurt can seem very real. Yet Scripture assures us that because “the Lord is with [us],” we don’t need to “be afraid” (PSALM 118:6). Though human help may fail us, He’s a trustworthy refuge when we feel overwhelmed by our struggles (VV. 8-9).

God is our “helper” (V. 7), which means we can trust Him to care for us during life’s most trying and fearful moments. Despite any falls, scars, and pain we might endure, His saving presence is our “strength” and “defense” (V. 14).

우연과 하나님의 돌보심

단테가 살던 마닐라의 동네는 홍수가 자주 나는 지역이었습니다. 비가 오는 날이면 어린 소년 단테는 이웃 사람이 임시로 만든 나무다리를 건너서 학교에 갔습니다. “토마스 아저씨는 동네 사람들이 다닐 수 있도록 도와 주셨어요.” 단테는 말했습니다. “아저씨는 비를 막아주며 제가 다리를 건너는 것을 도와주곤 하셨죠.”

몇 년 후 단테는 마닐라 북쪽의 한 교회에 다니게 되었습니다. 그의 성경 공부 리더였던 레오는 멘토가 되어 주었습니다. 어린 시절에 대한 이야기를 나누던 중, 단테는 레오가 바로 토마스 아저씨의 아들이라는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. “세상에 우연은 없어요.” 단테는 말했습니다. “하나님께서는 저를 축복해 주셨던 아저씨의 아들을 통해 제 믿음이 성장하도록 하셨죠.”

여러 해 전 그 여인의 죽은 아들이 다시 살아나는 것을 보았던 게하시가 왕에게 말했습니다. “내 주 왕이여 이는 그 여인이요 저는 그의 아들이니 곧 엘리사가 다시 살린 자니이다”(5절). 그러자 왕은 “그를 위하여 한 관리를 임명하여”(6절) 그 여인에게 속한 재산을 모두 돌려주었습니다.

우리가 계획한 대로 일이 풀리지 않을 때도 하나님과 그의 돌보심을 믿을 수 있습니다.

COINCIDENCES AND GOD’S CARE

Dante’s neighborhood in Manila was prone to flooding. On rainy days, the little boy reached school by crossing a makeshift wooden bridge put up by a neighbor. “Mr. Tomas helped the community get around,” Dante said. “He’d guide me on the bridge, shielding me from the rain.”

Years later, Dante joined a church north of Manila. Leo, his Bible study leader, mentored him. In a conversation about their childhoods, Dante discovered Leo was Mr. Tomas’ son! “There’s no such thing as coincidence,” Dante said. “God used the son of a man who’d blessed me to help me in my faith.”

A woman from the town of Shunem also experienced God’s providence. In faith, she’d followed the prophet Elisha’s advice, leaving home to avoid a famine (2 KINGS 8:1-2). In doing so, she’d forfeited her claim to her house and land. Now, at the exact moment she was seeking help from the king about this matter, the king just happened to be talking with Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, about her.

Years earlier, Gehazi had seen the woman’s dead son raised to life. Now, Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life” (V. 5). The king then “assigned an official to her case” (V. 6) and returned her property.

We can trust in God and His care even when things may not go as we planned.

생명을 구하는 일

아돌포 카민스키는 지워지지 않는 잉크를 종이에서 제거하는 방법을 알고 있었습니다. 프랑스에서 반나치 저항 운동의 일원으로 활동하던 그는 신분증을 위조해 수백 명을 강제수용소에서 구했습니다. 한번은 유대인 어린이 300명을 위해 출생증명서와 세례증명서, 그리고 배급카드 900장을 3일 안에 위조해야 했습니다. 그는 “내가 한 시간 동안 30장의 문서를 만들어 낼 수 있으니, 내가 한 시간 동안 잠을 자면 30명이 죽게 된다” 고스스로를 다그치며 이틀 동안 한숨도 자지 않고 꼬박 새면서 작업에 몰두했습니다.

바울 사도도 이와 비슷한 긴박함을 느꼈습니다. 바울은 에베소 교회에 자신이 어떻게 “여러 가지 시험을 당하면서도 언제나 겸손과 눈물로 주님을 섬겨 왔는”(사도행전 20:19, 현대인의 성경)지 상기시키면서, “유익한 것은 무엇이든지... 거리낌이 없이 여러분에게 전하여 가르쳤다”(20절)고 말했습니다. 이런 긴박함 때문에 그는 회개와 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음의 필요성을 누구 에게나 전하지 않을 수 없었습니다(21절). 이제 그는 “달려갈 길과 주 예수께 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 마치”(24절)기를 간절히 바라며 예루살렘으로 다시 돌아갔습니다.

바울이 사람을 구원할 수는 없었습니다. 오직 하나님이 하십니다. 그러나 바울은 사람들에게 예수님에 대한 하나님의 복음을 전할 수 있었습니다. 바로 “천하 사람 중에 구원을 받을 만한 이름”(사도행전 4:12), 그 유일하신 이름, 예수님 말입니다.

SAVING LIVES

Adolfo Kaminsky knew how to remove indelible ink from paper. As a member of the anti-Nazi resistance in France, he altered identification cards to save hundreds from concentration amps. Once he was given three days to forge nine hundred birth and baptismal certificates and ration cards for three hundred Jewish children. He labored two straight days without sleep, telling himself, “In one hour I can make thirty blank documents. If I sleep for an hour thirty people will die.”

The apostle Paul felt a similar urgency. He reminded the church in Ephesus how he’d “served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing” (ACTS 20:19). Paul said, “I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you” (V. 20). This urgency compelled him to share with everyone the necessity of repentance and faith in Jesus (V. 21). Now he was sailing back to Jerusalem, eager to “finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus [had] given [him]—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” (V. 24).

Paul couldn’t save people. Only God does that. But he could tell them God’s good news about Jesus, the only “name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (ACTS 4:12).

예수님 알아보기

리처드 그리핀은 엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 경호원으로 14년 동안 여왕을 모셨습니다. 어느 날 여왕과 함께 밸모럴 성 근처 언덕에서 소풍을 하던 중, 두 명의 미국인 등산객을 만났습니다. 등산객들은 평상복 차림의 여왕을 알아보지 못하고 여왕에게 이렇게 물었습니다. “여왕을 만나본 적이 있나요?” 그러자 여왕은 재치있는 대답을 했습니다. “나는 만나본 적이 없지만, 여기 리처드는 주기적으로 만나요!” 왕족과 가까운 사람을 만나서 들뜬 등산객들은 여왕에게 그들의 카메라를 건네며 리처드와 함께 포즈를 취하고 사진을 찍어 달라고 부탁했습니다!

이처럼 중요한 인물과 함께 있으면서도 알아보지 못하는 경우가 종종 있습니다. 야곱도 벧엘에서 꿈속 가운데 하나님을 만난 후 “여호와께서 과연 여기 계시거늘 내가 알지 못하였도다”(창세기 28:16)라고 고백했습니다. 그리고 빌립이 하나님 아버지를 보여 달라고 예수님께 요청했을 때, 예수님은 “빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐 나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘”(요한복음 14:9)이라고 답하셨습니다. 등산객들처럼, 제자들이 집중해야 할 사람은 바로 ‘예수님’임을 깨닫지 못한 채, 예수님께 카메라를 건네주려고 했습니다(10-11절).

그날의 여왕처럼 우리는 예수님이 진정 누구신지 알아보지 못하는 경우가 종종 있습니다. 단순히 “현명한 교사”나 “위대한 도덕적 지도자”정도가 아니고, 예수님은 육신을 입으신 하나님이시며 세상의 왕이십니다(1:14; 18:36). 우리가 이 사실을 깨닫는 것은 인생에서 가장 놀라운 깨달음입니다!

RECOGNIZING JESUS

Richard Griffin was Queen Elizabeth II’s personal police officer for fourteen years. Accompanying her on a picnic in the hills near Balmoral Castle one day, they met two American hikers. “Have you ever met the Queen?” they asked, not recognizing the monarch in plain dress. “I haven’t,” the Queen quipped, “but Richard here meets her regularly!” Thrilled to meet someone close to royalty, the hikers then handed the Queen their camera, posed with Richard, and asked her to take a photo!

It isn’t the first time someone has been in the presence of an important person unawares. “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it,” Jacob said after encountering God in a dream at Bethel (GENESIS 28:16). And when Philip asked Jesus to show the disciples the Father, Jesus replied, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (JOHN 14:9). Like the hikers, the disciples had been ready to hand Jesus the camera, not recognizing He was the one to zoom in on (VV. 10-11).

Like the Queen that day, Jesus hasn’t always been recognized for who He really is. Beyond a “wise teacher” or “great moral leader,” He’s God in the flesh and King of the world (1:14; 18:36). What a revelation it is when we discover it!

하나님과의 화평

친구의 생일을 맞아 미용실에 함께 갔을 때, 우리가 받은 특별한 서비스로 인해 무척 기분이 좋았습니다. 잔잔한 음악이 흐르는 가운데 친절한 직원이 우리를 조용하고 조명이 강하지 않은 스파 공간으로 안내해 주었습니다. 모든 것이 차분하고 조용하며 평온함을 느끼게 해주었습니다. 그러나 나는 테이블 위에 놓인 한 안내판을 보고 웃음을 참아야 했습니다. 거기에는 “이 유기농 모발보호 제품은 아름다운 머릿결 뿐 아니라 마음의 평화도 가져다줍니다.”라고 적혀 있었습니다.

우리는 모발보호 제품이 지속적인 화평을 가져다 주지 못한다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 하지만 스트레스가 많은 세상에서 우리는 종종 일시적인 안도감에 만족하곤 합니다. 사실 진정한 화평은 ‘무언가’가 아닌 ‘누군가’에게서 옵니다. 바울은 로마에 있는 예수님을 믿는 신자들에게 권면하며 이렇게 상기시켰습니다. “그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자”(로마서 5:1). 죄는 하나님과 우리 사이를 갈라놓지만, 그리스도의 속죄 희생은 우리가 하나님과 관계를 맺을 수 있는 길을 열어줍니다(5:9-10). 예수님은 오늘의 화평과 영원한 화평을 제공하며, “믿음으로 서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을”(1절) 얻게 하시고, “하나님의 영광을 바라고”(2절), 이 세상의 고난 중에도 소망을 주십니다(3-4절). 하나님과의 화평은 단순히 느끼는 감정 이상의 것입니다. 그것은 예수님을 믿음으로 받는 선물입니다. 우리가 하나님과 가까이 있다고 느끼든 그렇지 않든, 그분의 화평은 언제나 우리 곁에 있습니다. 미용실이든 병원이든, 평온한 때든 혼란한 때든 말입니다.

PEACE WITH GOD

When I accompanied my friend to the salon on her birthday, we were delighted by the pampering we received. Soothing music and a personal attendant welcomed us to the tranquil, dimly lit spa. The whole experience was calm, quiet, and restful. I had to suppress a giggle, however, at a sign displayed on a table proclaiming: “This organic hair-care line gives you more than beautiful hair—it gives you peace of mind.”

We know hair products don’t bring lasting peace, yet we often settle for temporary relief when our world is stressful. In reality, true peace comes not from something but someone. While encouraging the believers in Jesus in Rome, Paul reminded them, “Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (ROMANS 5:1). Sin separates us from God, but Christ’s atoning sacrifice makes a way for us to have a relationship with Him (5:9-10). Jesus offers peace for today and peace for eternity—providing “access by faith into this grace” (V. 1), “the hope of the glory of God” (V. 2), and hope despite earthly suffering (VV. 3-4). Peace with God is more than simply a feeling; it’s a gift we receive through faith in Jesus. Whether we feel close to God or not, His peace is available to us—at a salon or a hospital, in times of serenity and times of chaos.

THE SWEETNESS OF SCRIPTURE

On September 22, 1959, a devotional article appeared in Our Daily Bread written by Dr. M. R. DeHaan. He wrote about how he yearned for a box of Cracker Jack candied popcorn. His intention was to relate it to the yearning for the Scriptures. But to his surprise, a few weeks later, boxes upon boxes of Cracker Jack popcorn began arriving at his office. His desire for Cracker Jack was satisfied by the loyal readers of his devotional.

Letting the practice of regular immersion in Scripture slip away is always easy. That’s why we need to yearn for something “sweeter than honey” (PSALM 19:10). The psalmist David encourages us to know that God’s words are “perfect, refreshing the soul”; they’re “trustworthy” and full of wisdom (V. 7). He explains that “the precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart” (V. 8).

Dr. DeHaan encouraged readers to make interaction with the Scriptures a habit, something they craved each day, just like sweet popcorn. It’s vital for us as well to develop a habit of meditating and reflecting on the Bible, and responding to its truths, in a regular manner. As God helps us, let’s be like David, who said, “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight” (V. 14).

그리스도가 주시는 변화

왼쪽 눈가 피부에 자극을 받아 성난 부위가 생겼을 때, 나는 화장으로 그것을 가렸습니다. 일시적으로는 그 부위를 감출 수 있었습니다. 하지만 시간이 지나도 붉게 부은 자국은 없어지지 않았고, 아무래도 피부과 치료가 필요하다고 생각했습니다. 의사를 만나기로 한 날 아침, 평소처럼 화장을 하고 싶었지만 하지 않았습니다. 의사가 문제를 정확히 보고 치료할 수 있도록 해야 했기 때문입니다.

혹시 여러분은 죄의 문제를 숨기려고 한 적이 있나요? 아마도 어떤 잘못된 행동이나 그릇된 생각이 당신을 사로잡고 있다는 것을 알고 있으면서도 그에 대해 기도하거나 친구나 가족에게 말하지 않고 넘어갔을지도 모릅니다. 다른 많은 사람들이 비슷한 문제를 겪고 있기 때문에 그다지 큰 문제가 아니라고 생각할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 죄가 우리의 삶을 우리도 모르게 망치고 있을 때 영적성장은 불가능합니다. 잠언 28장 13절은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “자기의 죄를 숨기는 자는 형통하지 못하나” 감사하게도 말씀은 다음으로 이어집니다. “죄를 자복하고 버리는 자는 불쌍히 여김을 받으리라”(13절).

하나님의 관점으로 우리의 행위를 바라보고, 어떤 행동이 잘못되었다고 인정하기는 어려울 수 있습니다. 그러나 친절하신 하나님은 우리 자신이 겸손해지는 과정을 돕습니다. 그리스도의 영의 능력을 우리의 싸움 속에 받아들일 때, 우리는 우리를 유혹하는 죄를 거부할 수 있습니다(갈라디아서 5:16-17, 22-24). 하나님께서 우리를 인도하실 때, 변화가 가능하며, 그래서 우리의 영적 건강은 노력할 만한 가치가 있습니다!

THE CHANGE CHRIST BRINGS

When a patch of irritated skin formed near my left eye, I used makeup to cover it. Temporarily this kept my problem a secret. After a while, though, the swollen red spot didn’t clear up, and I knew it needed medical attention. On the morning of the doctor’s appointment, I was tempted to apply makeup as usual, but I didn’t. I wanted the doctor to see the problem clearly and treat it so it could heal.

Have you ever tried to hide a sin problem? Maybe you’re aware that some action or thought is controlling you, but you’ve avoided praying about it or mentioning it to friends and family. Maybe you think it’s no big deal because many other people are dealing with similar issues. But it’s impossible to thrive spiritually when sin is secretly fouling up our lives. As Proverbs 28:13 says, “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper.” Thankfully the verse continues, “but the one who confesses and renounces [sin] finds mercy” (V. 13).

It can be hard to adopt God’s view of our actions and admit that certain practices are wrong. However, His kindness eases the process of humbling ourselves. When we welcome the power of Christ’s Spirit into our struggle, we can reject the wrong that tempts us (GALATIANS 5:16-17, 22-24). As God guides us, change is possible, and our spiritual health is worth the effort!

메갈로돈과 리워야단

몇 년 전, 울퉁불퉁한 소포 하나가 우편함에 배달되었습니다. 소포에 제일 친한 친구의 반송 주소가 적혀 있는 것을 보고 빙그레 웃었습니다. 조는 가끔 예상치 못한 것을 보내곤 합니다. 이번에도 마찬가지였습니다. 그 소포 안에는 5인치(약 13 센티미터) 길이의 짙은 갈색 상어 이빨이 들어 있었습니다.

조의 편지에 그것은 선사 시대 상어인 메갈로돈의 화석화된 이빨인데, 백상아리보다 몇 배나 더 큰 것이었다는 설명이 적혀 있었습니다. 나는 그 엄청난 크기의 이빨을 가지고 있는 상어의 턱이 얼마나 클지 가늠해 보았습니다. 과학자들은 그 크기를 높이 9 피트, 너비 11 피트 (약 2.7미터와 3.4 미터)라고 추정합니다. 정말 엄청난 생물체였겠지요!

성경에는 메갈로돈에 대해 언급된 적이 없지만, 욥기에서 리워야단이라는 바다의 괴물이 등장합니다. 욥기 41장은 그 괴물의 놀라운 크기를 상세히 다룹니다. 하나님께서는 “내가 그것의 지체와 그것의 큰 용맹과 늠름한 체구에 대하여 잠잠하지 아니하리라”(12절)고 욥에게 말씀하십니다. 그리고 “누가 그것의 턱을 벌릴 수 있겠느냐 그의 둥근 이틀은 심히 두렵구나”(14절)라고도 하셨습니다.

그 질문에 대한 답은 명확합니다. 바로 리워야단의 창조자, 하나님만이 하실 수 있습니다. 그리고 여기서 하나님은 그 괴물이 아무리 크고 놀라운 존재 일지라도, 그것은 창조주와 비교할 수 없다고 욥에게 상기시킵니다. “온 천하에 있는 것이 다 내 것이니라”(11절).

그 상어 이빨은 우리 창조주 하나님의 위대함과 창의성을 보여주는 시각 자료로 지금 제 책상 위에 놓여 있습니다. 그리고 세상이 나를 집어 삼키고 뱉아낼 것 같은 기분이 들 때, 하나님의 성품을 생각나게 해주는 뜻밖의 물건이 저를 위로해 줍니다.

OF MEGALODONS AND LEVIATHAN

Years ago, a lumpy package arrived in my mailbox. I noticed my best friend’s return address on it and smiled. Joe sometimes sends me unexpected things. This package qualified: Inside was a dark brown shark’s tooth—five inches long.

Joe’s letter explained it was a fossilized tooth from a prehistoric shark, a megalodon, many times bigger than a great white shark. I tried to fathom how big a fish’s jaw would have to be to contain rows of such teeth. Scientists offer a speculative answer: nine by eleven feet. What a sight these creatures must have been!

Scripture doesn’t mention megalodons. But in the book of Job, God describes a sea beast called Leviathan. Job 41 details its impressive frame. “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form,” God tells Job (V. 12). “Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth?” (V. 14).

The answer? Only Leviathan’s creator. And here, God reminds Job that as great as this beast might be, it’s nothing compared to its Creator: “Everything under heaven belongs to me” (V. 11).

That meg tooth sits on my desk, a visual token of our Creator’s majesty and creativity. And that unlikely reminder of God’s character comforts me when it feels like the world might eat me up and spit me out.

하나님의 능력

노라에게 남편의 죽음은 인생의 전환점이 되었습니다. 남편이 운영하던 철물점을 맡아야 했고, 세 자녀를 홀로 돌보아야 했습니다. 친구들은 종종 “힘내”라고 말했습니다. 노라는 그 말이 무엇을 의미하는지 생각해 보았습니다. ‘내가 모든 책임을 완벽히 감당해야 한다는 뜻일까?’

이스라엘 백성들의 한 전환기 시점에 하나님이 옷니엘에게 큰 책임을 맡기셨습니다. 이스라엘이 우상을 섬겼기 때문에 하나님은 그들을 “메소보다미아 왕 구산 리사다임의 손에 파셨으므로 이스라엘 자손이 구산 리사다임을 팔 년 동안 섬겼습니다”(사사기 3:8). 잔혹한 메소보다미아 왕 아래에서 이스라엘 자손이 “여호와께 부르짖으매 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 한 구원자를 세워 그들을 구원하게 하시니”(9절). 그 구원자 옷니엘이라는 이름은 “하나님의 능력”을 의미합니다.

이스라엘의 첫 번째 사사였던 옷니엘은 그를 돕는 선임자가 없었습니다. 그는 군사적 지도자로서 이스라엘 백성이 하나님과의 언약 관계를 다시 살아가도록 이끌어야 했고, 적들로부터 그들을 보호해야 했습니다. 그러나 “여호와의 영이 그에게 임하셨으므로”(10절) 그는 성공할 수 있었습니다. 하나님의 능력이 옷니엘을 붙들어 주셨고, “옷니엘이 죽을 때까지 그 땅은 사십 년 동안 평온을” 누렸습니다(11절).

GOD’S STRENGTH

Her husband’s death began a period of transition for Nora. She took over his hardware business and cared for their three children on her own. “Be strong,” friends often told her. But what does that mean? she’d think. That I must deliver without fail in my responsibilities?

God gave great responsibilities to Othniel in a time of transition for the people of Israel. As discipline for the nation’s idolatry, God had given them “into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim . . . to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years” (JUDGES 3:8). Under the cruel king of Mesopotamia, the Israelites “cried out to the Lord,” and “he raised up for them a deliverer” (V. 9)—Othniel, whose name means “God’s strength.”

As the first judge of Israel, Othniel had no predecessor to help him. This military leader had to guide the Israelites back to living out their covenant relationship with God and defend them from their enemies. But because “the Spirit of the Lord came on him” (V. 10), he succeeded. With God’s strength sustaining Othniel’s leadership, “the land had peace for forty years, until [he] died” (V. 11).

How can we truly “be strong”? It’s by knowing we’re not strong and by trusting God to give us His strength. His “grace is sufficient for [us], for [His] power is made perfect in weakness” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). God’s strength works through us, doing things only He can do.
