아버지가 원하시는 것

스티브가 전기톱을 들고 숲으로 향하는데 다섯 살짜리 어거스트가 소리질렀습니다. “아빠, 잠깐만 기다려요! 나도 따라 갈래요!” 장난감 전기톱에다 작업용 장갑과 귀마개를 챙긴 어거스트는 아빠를 따라 나섰습니다. 아빠는 안전한 거리를 두고 통나무 몇 개를 주었습니다. 10분이 지나자 어거스트는 기진맥진했습니다. 가짜 전기톱으로 통나무를 자르려 했으니 힘든 일이었지요! 하지만 그는 아빠를 “돕는”게 기뻤고, 아빠도 아들과 함께 시간을 보내는 것이 참 좋았습니다.

하늘에 계신 우리 아버지의 경우도 바로 이와 같지 않을까요? 우리는 “아빠, 잠깐만 기다려요! 내 전기톱을 가져가야 해요!” 하며 우리가 하나님을 돕는다고 생각합니다. 그러나 우리의 전기톱은 하나도 중요한 것이 아니며, 우리가 생각하는 것만큼 그렇게 도움이 되지 않습니다. 하나님께는 우리가 먼저 “아빠, 잠깐만 기다려요!”라고 한 말, 이것이 훨씬 더 중요합니다. 하나님은 우리가 만들어 드리는 어떤 것이 필요한 분이 아니십니다.

당신이 하나님의 아들 예수님을 사랑한다면, 하나님은 이미 당신을 그의 가족으로 받아들이시고 성령님도 주셨습니다. 우리는 “다시 무서워하는 종의 영을 받지 아니하고 양자의 영을 받았습니다”(로마서 8:15) 우리는 힘써 일해야 겨우 자리를 얻는 종이 아니라, 아무 조건 없이 하나님 아버지의 사랑을 받는 자녀입니다. “보라 아버지께서 어떠한 사랑을 우리에게 베푸사 하나님의 자녀라 일컬음을 받게 하셨는가”(요한1서 3:1).

하늘에 계신 아버지께서는 우리가 그분을 섬길 때 기뻐하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 필요한 것이 아니라, 그냥 우리를 원하십니다.

WHAT YOUR FATHER WANTS

Steve grabbed his chainsaw and headed out to the woods. That’s when he heard five-year-old August. “Wait for me, Dad! I want to come!” Grabbing his toy chainsaw, work gloves, and earmuffs, August followed Steve out the door. Steve set out a couple of logs for him a safe distance away. After ten minutes, August was worn out. Cutting logs with a fake chainsaw is hard work! But he was happy to “help” his dad, and his dad was delighted to spend time with his son.

Isn’t this how it is with our heavenly Father? We suppose we’re helping. “Wait for me, Dad! I need to get my chainsaw!” But our chainsaw is the least important thing about us. We’re not helping as much as we think. God cares far more about the first part, “Wait for me, Dad!” He doesn’t need our output.

If you love His Son, Jesus, God has adopted you into His family and given you His Spirit. “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship” (ROMANS 8:15). You’re not a servant who earns his place by hard work. You’re a child who’s loved by your Father, no matter what. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 JOHN 3:1).

Our heavenly Father is delighted when we serve Him. But He doesn’t need us. He simply wants us.

믿음 위에 굳게 서서

몇 해 전 출근 길에 기차를 타려고 걸어가는데 한 여성이 사납게 보이는 개를 데리고 내 쪽으로 오고 있었습니다. 나는 어려서부터 애완견을 키우며 자랐기 때문에 평소에 개를 무서워하지 않았는데, 그 개는 위험해 보였습니다. 그 개는 가까이 다가오면서 나를 향해 짖었습니다. 나는 그저 웃어 넘기려고 하다가 그 개가 달려드는 바람에 비명을 질렀습니다. 그러나 개 주인이 목줄을 꽉 잡고 있었기 때문에 다행히 나한테까지 닿지 못해 나를 해칠 수는 없었습니다.

이 무서웠던 사건은 예수님을 믿는 나에게 사탄도 “목줄에 묶여” 있지만 기회만 주어지면 공격하려고 언제나 노리고 있다는 것을 생각나게 해주었습니다. 베드로전서에서 베드로 사도는 “너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾는다”(5:8)고 경고합니다. 사탄은 으르렁거리면서 달려들어 우리를 겁주고 위협하고 두려움에 사로잡혀 꼼짝 못하게 하려 하지만, 우리는 믿음으로 굳건히 서서 “그를 대적”(9절)할 수 있습니다.

원수가 조롱하거나 유혹하는 것을 느낄 때 그는 예수님께 상대가 되지 않는다는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 우리가 예수님께 부르짖으면 예수님께서 도와주실 것입니다. 예수님은 우리를 “친히 온전하게 하시고 굳건하게 하시며 강하게 하시고 터를 견고하게 하십니다”(10절).

영적으로 공격받을 때 우리는 예수님이 항상 함께하시기 때문에 두려움 대신 믿음을 택할 수 있습니다.

STANDING FIRM IN FAITH

On my walk to catch the train to work a few years ago, I saw a woman with a ferocious-looking dog heading toward me. I grew up around pet dogs, so I’m usually not afraid of furry friends, but this one looked menacing. As the dog got closer, he barked at me. I tried to laugh it off. But then he lunged at me, so I screamed. Thankfully, the dog couldn’t harm me because he couldn’t reach me. His owner held on tightly to his leash.

That scary encounter reminded me that as believers in Jesus, Satan is also “on a leash” but waiting to attack if we give him the opportunity. In 1 Peter, the apostle Peter warns us, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (5:8). He growls and snarls and lunges at us to try to scare and intimidate us and to paralyze us with fear, but we can stand firm in our faith and “resist him” (V. 9).

When you feel the enemy taunting or tempting you, remember this: he’s no match for Jesus. We can cry out to Him and He’ll help us. He “will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” (V. 10).

When we’re under spiritual attack, we can choose faith over fear because Jesus is always with us.

넉넉히 나누는 마음

세네갈 출신의 축구 스타 사디오 마네는 영국 프리미어리그의 리버풀 팀에서 뛰던 당시 세계에서 가장 높은 대우를 받는 아프리카 선수 중 한 명으로 연봉은 수백만 달러에 달했습니다. 그런 마네가 화면에 금이 간 아이폰을 들고 있는 사진을 본 팬들은 부서진 기기를 사용한다고 이야깃거리로 삼았습니다. 그러나 그는 주저없이 이렇게 말했습니다. “페라리 10대, 다이아몬드 시계 20개, 제트기 2대가 나에게 왜 필요합니까? 나는 먹을 걸 못 먹고, 밭에서 일하고, 맨발로 운동하고, 학교도 못 갔습니다. 하지만 이제는 사람들을 도울 수가 있습니다. 그래서 학교도 짓고 가난한 사람들에게 음식과 옷도 주며... 내가 받은 것을 나누려 합니다.”

마네는 고향에 있는 많은 이웃들이 힘든 상황에서 어려움을 겪고 있을 때 자기만 모든 부를 쌓는 것이 얼마나 이기적인 것인지를 알고 있었습니다. 히브리서는 이렇게 넉넉히 나누는 삶은 부유한 사람들만 아니라 우리 모두에게 해당된다고 말해줍니다. 저자는 “오직 선을 행함과 서로 나누어 주기를 잊지 말라 하나님은 이같은 제사를 기뻐하시느니라”(13:16)라고 말합니다. 넉넉한 마음을 키우는 것은 옳은 일일 뿐 아니라, 이 넉넉한 마음은 하나님을 기쁘시게 한다고 성경은 말합니다. 하나님을 ‘기쁘시게’ 하고 싶지 않은 사람은 없을 것입니다.

넉넉히 나눈다는 것은 단순히 우리가 얼마나 많이 주는가 하는 문제가 아닙니다. 그보다는 우리 마음의 자세를 말합니다. 우리가 할 수 있는 “[하나님이] 기뻐하시는”(21절, 현대인의 성경) 한 가지 일은 그저 손을 펴서 가진 것을 나누는 것입니다.

A GENEROUS HEART

When soccer star Sadio Mané from Senegal was playing for Liverpool in the English Premier League, he was one of the world’s highest-paid African players, making millions of dollars per year. Fans spotted a picture of Mané carrying an iPhone with a cracked screen and joked about him using the damaged device. His response was unflustered. “Why would I want ten Ferraris, twenty diamond watches, and two jet planes?” he asked. “I starved, I worked in the fields, played barefoot, and didn’t go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. . . . [Give] some of what life has given me.”

Mané knew how selfish it would be to hoard all his prosperity when so many of his neighbors back home struggled under crushing conditions. Hebrews reminds us that this generous way of life is for all of us, not only for those who are wealthy. “Do not forget to do good and to share with others,” the writer says, “for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (13:16). Nurturing a generous heart isn’t only the right thing to do, but according to Scripture, generosity also makes God smile. Who doesn’t want to make God pleased?

Generosity isn’t defined simply by how much we give. Instead, generosity refers to the posture of our heart. One thing we can do that’s “pleasing to [God]” (V. 21) is to simply open our hands and share what we have.

준비된 사람

베티는 늘 준비되어 있습니다. 십대 때에 예수님을 믿기 시작하여 평생 예수님을 섬기고 기쁘시게 하는 기회를 놓치지 않았습니다. 베티는 성경공부와 예배와 기도 모임에 참석합니다. 성경공부를 가르치고, 선교 현장을 찾아가고, 보육원에서 일하며, 목사 남편 곁에서 함께 섬겨왔습니다. 그리고 기회가 있을 때마다 하나님의 사람들과 함께 있는 것을 좋아합니다. 놀랍게도102세가 된 지금도 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 일이라면 무엇이든 할 준비가 되어 있습니다. 그는 때로 다른 성도들과 모이는 것이 내키지 않는 사람 들에게도 동기를 부여합니다. 사람들은 ‘베티가 거기 올 거야. 그럼 나도 가야지’ 하며 마음을 바꿉니다. 베티는 이제는 어서 천국에 가 구주이신 예수님과 같이 있고 싶다고 말합니다. “나는 예수님 만날 준비가 다 되었어요. 예수님을 너무나 사랑합니다.” 베티의 고백입니다.

바울 사도는 그가 “원하는 바는 차라리 몸을 떠나 주와 함께 있는 그것 이라”(고린도후서 5:8)고 말했습니다. 그러나 그는 하나님이 많은 교회에서 믿는 자들을 격려하라고 하신다는 것을 알고 있었습니다(빌립보서 1:23-24). 그래서 바울은 “보이는 것으로”가 아니라 “믿음으로” 꾸준히 섬기며 살았습니다 (고린도후서 5:7). 바울은 늘 준비가 되어 있었고 하나님의 인도하심에 따라 계속 섬겼습니다.

STAY READY

Betty is ready. She began following Jesus as a teenager and has taken opportunities her whole life to serve and please Him. She attends Bible studies, worship services, and prayer meetings. She’s taught studies, visited mission fields, worked in the nursery, served alongside her pastor-husband, and she loves being with God’s people every chance she gets. And remarkably she’s 102 years old and is still ready to do whatever pleases God. She’s an inspiration to many who might not feel like gathering with other believers some days. Then they remember, Betty will be there. I certainly can get there! Betty now says she’s eager to get to heaven to be with her Savior. She says, “I’m ready to see Jesus; I love Him so.”

The apostle Paul said he “would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:8). But he knew God had work for him to do in encouraging believers in many churches (PHILIPPIANS 1:23-24). So he kept serving and living “by faith” and “not by sight” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:7). Paul remained ready and kept serving under God’s direction.

Whatever our age and stage in life, let’s ask God to help us make it our heart’s goal “to please [Christ]” (V. 9) and stay ready. Betty is ready. And if someday she isn’t ready, it’s because she’s already seeing Jesus face-to-face.

슬기롭게 계획하기

실제로 슬기롭다는 말은 라틴어로 “선견”을 뜻하는 ‘프루덴시아’라는 단어 에서 나왔습니다. “어리석은 자는 온갖 말을 믿으나 슬기로운 자는 자기의 행동을 삼가느니라”(15절). 이 사람들은 앞에 있을 일을 미리 내다보고 지혜 롭게 안전을 위한 대책을 세웁니다. 이것이 바로 슬기로운 사람들이 하는 든든한 행동 방침입니다!

우리도 맑은 믿음의 눈을 가지고 하나님의 뜻에 맞추어 슬기롭게 살 수 있기를 바랍니다.

PLANNING PRUDENTLY

Small-town physician Ezdan nurtured a grand dream for his young daughter Eleanor. She has Down syndrome, and he hoped to open a business to provide paid work for her future. Feeling “terrified” to pursue his dream, he took an online course on how to start a business. Then he and his wife launched a family bakery in their Wyoming town, and it’s thriving. “It has become a real business, with a staff,” Ezdan said. Eleanor, now grown, works the cash register and connects with online customers. “Everybody in town knows who she is,” says Ezdan. His leap of faith in planning for Eleanor’s future reflects his choice to be prudent.

It’s a classic biblical virtue. Prudence is an element of wisdom that God ordains for our current and future planning. “The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,” says Proverbs 14:8, “but the folly of fools is deception.” Rather than worry about the future, or do nothing about it, prudent people look to God for wisdom to plan for it.

In fact, prudence comes directly from the Latin word prudentia, meaning “foresight.” “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps” (V. 15). Foreseeing what could happen, they work sensibly to build a safety net—a strong course of action for the wise! With clear-eyed faith, may we live prudently, in step with God.

마음의 수술

몇 해 전 캐롤린과 나는 서로 격한 말을 주고받은 후 서로를 돌아보는 마음과 사랑으로 갈등을 풀었습니다. 나는 내 잘못을 고백했고, 캐롤린은 에스겔서 36장 26절 말씀을 인용하며 나를 위해 기도해 주었습니다. “내가 너희에게 새로운 마음을 주고 너희 속에 새로운 영을 넣어 주며, 너희 몸에서 돌같이 굳은 마음을 없애고 살갗처럼 부드러운 마음을 줄 것이다” (새번역). 나는 하나님께서 나의 마음에 어떤 영적 수술을 하시려고 나를 하나님의 사랑으로 끌어안고 나의 두려움과 괴로움을 없애 주시는 것을 느꼈습니다.

하나님은 내가 그 때 한 것처럼 우리가 말씀을 가지고 기도하는 것을 기뻐하시지만, 그 말씀이 기록된 본래의 맥락을 아는 것도 중요합니다. 에스겔은 하나님을 대신하여 하나님의 백성들에게 하나님이 그의 백성들의 죄를 깨끗하게 해주실 것이라는 약속을 말해주었습니다. 하나님은 그 이유를 “내가 이렇게 행함은 너희를 위함이 아니요... 나의 거룩한 이름을 위함이라”(22절)고 하셨습니다. 하나님은 그의 백성들의 삶 속에서 죄를 정결케 하는 일을 하심으로 모든 민족이 그분을 경외하고 그분이 하나님 됨을 알게 하십니다.

하나님이 우리 삶 속에서 그분의 뜻을 이루어가는 것은 우리의 번영과 성장을 도우실 뿐만 아니라 우리가 그분께 영광을 돌리게 하기 위함입니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성에게 새 마음과 새 영을 부어주시리라 약속하신대로, 하나님은 또한 성령의 내적 역사를 통해 우리의 차갑고 굳어진 마음을 그분의 사랑과 생명을 받아들이고 나누는 마음으로 바꾸어 주십니다.

HEART SURGERY

Some years ago, after exchanging heated words, Carolyn and I resolved our conflict through compassion and love for each other. I confessed my wrongdoing, and she prayed for me, referencing Ezekiel 36:26: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” I sensed that God was conducting a form of spiritual heart surgery on me, taking away my fears and bitterness as He enfolded me in His love.

God delights for us to engage with the Scriptures as I did back then, but it’s important to note the passage’s original context. Ezekiel spoke on God’s behalf to His people with the promise that He would cleanse them. Why? “It is not for your sake . . . I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name” (V. 22). God would do His purifying work among His people so that all the nations would revere Him and know that He is God.

God works His purposes in our lives not only to help us flourish and grow but so we would bring Him honor. Even as He gave the Israelites the promise of a new heart and a new spirit, so through the inward work of the Holy Spirit, God replaces our cold and hardened hearts with those that receive and share His love and life.

‘Mon Dieu. Lieber Gott. DrahyýBoze. AγαπητεέΘεε. Dear God.’ 나는 프랑스어, 독일어, 슬로바키아어, 그리스어, 그리고 영어로 아테네 중심부에 있는 교회에서 드리는 기도를 들었습니다. 우리는 모국에 있는 사람들이 하나님의 사랑을 들을 수 있도록 각자의 모국어로 한마음이 되어 기도했습니다. 그날이 바로 오순절이라는 것을 알았을 때 그 모임의 의미가 더 크게 다가왔습니다.

구약에서 오순절은 유월절 이후 50일째를 기념하는 추수절이었습니다 (레위기 23:15-21). 예수님의 죽음과 부활 이후 첫번째 오순절에 제자들이 예루살렘에 모였습니다. 갑자기 “급하고 강한 바람” 같은 소리가 나고 “불의 혀 처럼 갈라지는 것들”이 나타나 그들이 다 성령의 충만함을 받고 “성령이 말하게 하심을 따라 다른 언어들로 말하기를 시작했습니다”(사도행전 2:2-4). 다른 나라 들로부터 온 사람들은 다 자신들의 언어로 “하나님의 큰 일”을 말하는 것을 들었습니다(11절). 그 때 베드로가 “큰 소리로 말하니”(14절, 현대인의 성경) 많은 사람들이 예수님께서 우리를 용서하시기 위해 십자가에 못박히시고 부활 하셨다는 것을 믿게 되었습니다(22-41절).

아테네에 모인 교회지도자들의 다국어 기도는 오순절에 했던 베드로의 메시지가 지금도 전 세계에 공유되고 있고, 사람들이 여전히 믿음으로 응답하고 있다는 것을 상기시켜 주었습니다.

오순절의 초대교회 교인들처럼 성령이 우리에게 하나님의 사랑을 전할 수 있는 능력을 주시기를 기도합시다. 그리고 이 메시지가 전 세계 모든 언어로 들려지기를 기도합시다.

LANGUAGE OF LOVE

Mon Dieu. Lieber Gott. Drahý Bože. Aγαπητέ Θεέ. Dear God. I heard French, German, Slovak, Greek, and English prayers echo through the central Athens church as, in unison, we prayed in our native languages for people in our home countries to hear of God’s love. The beauty of the gathering was magnified when we realized our gathering was happening on Pentecost.

In the Old Testament, Pentecost was a harvest festival celebrated fifty days after the Passover festival (LEVITICUS 23:15-21). On the first Pentecost following Jesus’ death and resurrection, believers gathered in Jerusalem. Suddenly a sound like “violent wind” came, and “what seemed to be tongues of fire” appeared as they were filled with the Spirit and “began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (ACTS 2:2-4). Visitors from other nations heard “the wonders of God” in their own language (V. 11). Then, after Peter “addressed the crowd” (V. 14), many believed the message that Jesus was crucified and raised to life to offer forgiveness (VV. 22-41).

The multilingual prayers of the ministry leaders assembled in Athens reminded me that Peter’s message heard at Pentecost continues to be shared around the world, and people are still responding in faith.

Let’s pray for the Spirit to empower us like the early believers in Jesus at Pentecost to tell of God’s love. And let’s pray for the message to be heard in every language spoken around the world.

평범해 보이는 한 테이블 위에 열 세 개의 소박한 컵이 각기 다른 구획 으로 나뉘어져 그려 있는 현대 미술품이 있습니다. 그것은 옥스포드 대학교의 울프슨 대학에 걸려 있는 “그들도 다 하나가 되어”라는 작품입니다. 단순해 보이는 그 작품은 실제로 예수님이 제자들과 함께 하셨던 최후의 만찬의 중요성을 강조해 보여줍니다. 예수님을 나타내는 컵과 빵이 있는 가장 두드러진 구획을 중심으로 열 두 개의 각기 다른 구획이 배치되어 있어 제자들이 그 자리에 함께 있음을 보여주고 있습니다.

그 그림은 예수님이 빵과 잔을 취하셔서 주님을 따르는 모든 자들이 새롭게 기념할 성찬 의식을 시작하는 모습을 아름답게 상기시켜 줍니다. 그리고 그림의 나머지 부분에 빈 구획들이 줄 지어 있는데, 그 빈 공간이 관람객에게 테이블에 있는 그들과 함께 하자고 초대하고 있는 것 같아 감사한 마음이 듭니다.

바울은 “너희가 이 떡을 먹으며 이 잔을 마실 때마다 주의 죽으심을 그가 오실 때까지 전하는 것”(고린도전서 11:26)이라고 우리에게 권면합니다. 예수님의 죽음과 부활이 하나님과의 평화를 위한 길을 제공해준다고 믿는 사람 누구에게나 그 테이블에 그들을 위한 자리가 마련되어 있습니다.

우리가 성찬식을 하면서 예수님의 희생을 기억하고 기릴 때, 우리는 온 시대와 온 세계의 신자들과 함께 하나의 공동체가 되어 그렇게 행하는 것입니다. 그것은 교회의 연합을 보여주는 아름다운 모습입니다.

AS ONE

A seemingly plain table with 13 simple cups divided across separate panels make up the contemporary painting, “That They May All Be One,” which hangs in Wolfson College at Oxford University. Its simplicity actually emphasizes the significance of the event: Jesus’ last supper with His disciples. The most prominent panel, containing bread and a cup representing Jesus, is surrounded by twelve individual panels to signify the disciples’ presence.

The painting is a beautiful reminder of the meal where Jesus took bread and a cup to start a new celebration for all His followers, the practice of communion. And I appreciate the row of empty panels that complete the picture because the space seems to invite the viewer to join them at the table.

Paul encourages us that “whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 CORINTHIANS 11:26). Everyone who believes Jesus’ death and resurrection provides the way for peace with God has a space waiting for them at the table.

And when we proclaim, or remember, Jesus’ sacrifice when we take communion, we act as one community of believers across the world and throughout time. It is as a beautiful image of the unity of the church.

헛되지 않는 고통

그 여인은 내 눈을 바라보며 “고통을 헛되이 낭비하지 마세요.”라고 말했습니다. 나는 오래 전 교통사고로 목숨을 잃은 그의 젊은 아들을 위한 추도식을 인도했던 때가 떠올랐습니다. 그가 이 말을 한 데에는 이유가 있었습니다. 그는 고통에 대해 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 또한 하나님이 고통을 어떻게 사용하여 그분을 영화롭게 하고 다른 이들을 도울 수 있는지도 잘 알고 있었고, 실제로 그것을 아주 잘 해냈습니다. 그리고 심각한 암 진단을 받은 나 자신도 그의 말을 들으며 위로와 용기를 얻었습니다. 그는 하나님이 내 부르짖음과 탄식을 들으시고 고통 가운데 나와 함께 계시며, 나의 고통을 사용하여 새로운 방법으로 다른 사람들을 도우실 지도 모른다고 상기시켜 주었습니다.

NO WASTED PAIN

What does it mean for you to know God hears your cries? How is God using your pain to help others?She looked into my eyes and said, “Don’t waste your pain.” My mind immediately returned to the time years prior when I’d led the memorial service for her young adult son whose life was taken in a car accident. She knew what she was talking about. She knew pain. But she also knew how God could use it to honor Him and help others—something this friend had done so very well. And as I heard her words, they comforted and encouraged me as I faced a serious cancer diagnosis. She was reminding me that God heard my cries and lament, and that He was with me in my pain and might use it to help others in a new way.

Moses also learned that God was with His people in their pain. “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt,” God said. “I have heard them crying out . . . and I am concerned about their suffering” (EXODUS 3:7). The Israelites, like us at times, must have felt alone in their pain. But God assured them He had a plan to “rescue them” and that “the cry” of their hearts was heard (VV. 8-9). He would ultimately use their pain to grow their faith, defeat their enemies, and bring Him honor.

In Psalm 90, the only psalm attributed to Moses, he declared that even though our “best years are filled with pain” (V. 10 NLT), God’s “unfailing love” is with us “to the end of our lives” (V. 14 NLT). He lovingly won’t waste our pain—and neither should we.

베푸는 은사

억만장자 사업가 로버트 헤일 주니어는 2024년 대학 졸업생 1200명에게 행한 축사에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “이처럼 어려운 시기에는 나눔, 돌봄, 베풂의 필요성이 더 커집니다. 나와 내 아내는 졸업생들에게 두 가지 선물을 드리려고 합니다. 첫번째는 여러분께 드리는 선물이고, 두번째는 나눔의 선물입니다.” 그의 축사 후 졸업생들은 예상치 못했던 두 개의 봉투를 받았습니다. 500달러는 각자 갖고, 다른 500달러는 도움이 필요한 사람에게 나누어 주라고 했습니다.

THE GIFT OF GIVING

In his 2024 address to 1,200 university graduates, billionaire businessman Robert Hale Jr. said: “These trying times have heightened the need for sharing, caring and giving. [My wife and I] want to give you two gifts: The first is our gift to you, the second is the gift of giving.” His words were followed by the distribution of two envelopes each to the unexpectant graduates—five hundred dollars to keep and five hundred to give away to a person in need.

Though Robert Hale’s wealth has allowed him to share like this on more than one occasion, generosity isn’t reserved for those with great means. Believers in Jesus in ancient Macedonia gave out of their poverty so the needs of believers in Jerusalem could be met. Paul said of the Macedonians, “In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity” (2 CORINTHIANS 8:2). He commends them because “they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people” (VV. 3-4).

Those who recognize that they’ve been given much grace from God through Jesus can respond with generous hands to the needs of others. With God’s help, let’s give after the example of the one who said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (ACTS 20:35).
