억압받는 이들을 보살핌

저명한 목사의 아내인 조세핀 버틀러는 (때로는 억울하게) “밤의 여인들” 로 비난 받는 여성들의 권리를 위해 캠페인을 벌였습니다. 그들은 사회에서 “가장 바람직하지 않은 존재들”로 여겨졌습니다. 하나님을 믿는 깊은 신앙의 힘으로 조세핀은 1860년대의 영국의 전염병 관리법에 맞서 여러 해를 싸웠습니다. 그 법은 여성들에게 잔인하고 강압적인 “의료” 검사를 강요하고 있었습니다.

1883년 그 법을 폐기하기 위한 법안을 놓고 의회에서 토론이 진행되는 동안 조세핀은 웨스트민스터 사원에서 다른 여성들과 함께 기도했습니다. 그는 “빈민가의 가장 누추하고 비참한 여성들”과 “고위 계층의 여성들”이 모두 함께 눈물을 흘리며 약한 이들을 보호해 달라고 하나님께 기도하는 모습을 보고 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 법안은 통과되었고 그들 모두가 환호했습니다.

조세핀이 정의로운 행동을 촉구하고 나선 것은 예레미야가 악한 왕들에게 전했던 하나님의 메시지를 떠올려 줍니다. 예레미야는 말했습니다. “정의와 공의를 행하여 탈취 당한 자를 압박하는 자의 손에서 건지고 이방인과 고아와 과부를 압제하거나 학대하지 말라”(예레미야 22:3). 하나님은 강자의 손에서 자신을 방어할 수 없는 자들을 보호하기를 원하셨습니다.

하나님은 불평등을 분별하고 그에 맞서 말하고 조치를 취할 수 있도록 도우심으로 우리가 행동하도록 촉구하실 수 있습니다. 학대를 미워하시는 하나님은 우리에게 정의를 지키고 약자들을 보호할 수 있는 힘을 주십니다.

CARING FOR THE OPPRESSED

Josephine Butler, a prominent minister’s wife, found herself campaigning for the rights of women accused (often unjustly) of being “ladies of the night,” those seen in society as the “least desirables.” Spurred on by her deep faith in God, she fought for years against the British Contagious Diseases Acts of the 1860s, which subjected women to cruel and invasive “medical” exams.

In 1883, during the parliamentary debate over a bill to repeal the Acts, she joined women in Westminster to pray. She was moved by the sight of the “most ragged and miserable women from the slums” alongside “ladies of high rank,” all weeping and asking God for protection of the vulnerable. To their joy, the bill passed.

Josephine’s call to act justly echoes the words of the prophet Jeremiah, who delivered God’s message to evil kings. Jeremiah said, “Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed.” And “do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow” (JEREMIAH 22:3). God wanted to shield those who couldn’t defend themselves against the powerful.

God can spur us to action too, helping us to discern inequalities and to speak and take measures against them. He who hates abuse empowers us to uphold justice and defend the weak.

그리스도의 빛 안에서 걷기

팀의 호텔 방은 밤에 너무나 깜깜해 보였습니다. 밤에 일어났을 때 아무것도 안보여 걸려 넘어지면 어떡하나 할 정도였습니다. 그런데 실제 일어나 보니 침대 밑에서 발 길을 비추는 빛이 밝게 나오는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 동작을 감지하는 기기가 작동한 것이었습니다. 그런데 그 빛은 팀이 일어나 걷기 시작할 때에만 작동했습니다.

성경은 우리에게 뜻을 품고 하나님의 빛 가운데 행하라고 말합니다. 바울은 예수님을 새로 믿는 에베소 사람들에게 “하나님을 본받는 자가 되고... 사랑 가운데서 행하라”(에베소서 5:1-2)고 하였습니다. 하지만 그렇게 행하는 것은 과연 어떤 모습일까요?

우리는 그리스도의 사랑의 빛 안으로 들어갈 때 죄에서 돌이키게 됩니다. 그 죄에는 부도덕과 더러움과 우상숭배, 탐욕 같은 것들이 있습니다. 바울은 “너희는 열매 없는 어둠의 일에 참여하지 말고 도리어 책망하라”(11절)고 하였습니다. 이방 신 숭배가 만연했던 에베소에서 이 같은 사도의 말은 새로 믿기 시작한 사람들을 바른 길로 인도했습니다. “너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라”(8절). 그는 이어서 말했습니다. “빛의 열매는 모든 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있느니라 주께 기쁘시게 할 것이 무엇인가 시험하여 보라”(9-10절).

그렇게 할 때의 유익은 무엇일까요? 예수님의 빛이 “너에게 비추이시리라” (14절)는 말씀대로 우리의 길을 비춰 줍니다. 바울은 “그런즉 너희가 어떻게 행할 지를 자세히 주의하라”(15절)는 말로 결론을 맺습니다. 그리스도의 빛 안에서 믿음으로 걸을 때 우리는 다른 사람들을 진정한 빛의 근원이신 예수님께로 인도하며 그들을 축복하게 될 것입니다.

WALKING IN CHRIST’S LIGHT

Tim’s hotel room seemed extra dark at night. What if he got up at night and slipped and fell because he couldn’t see? But when Tim did get up, he was surprised to see a bright light shining from underneath the bed—lighting his path. A motion sensor had activated it. The light only worked, however, if he got up and started to walk.

The Bible says we’re to walk with intent in God’s light. As Paul told the new believers in Jesus at Ephesus, “Follow God’s example . . . and walk in the way of love” (EPHESIANS 5:1-2). But what does it look like to walk that way?

As we step into Christ’s loving light, we turn from our sins—that might include immorality, impurity, idolatry, and coveting. “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,” Paul said, “but rather expose them” (V. 11). Pagan worship thrived in Ephesus, but the apostle’s words steered the new believers aright. “At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (V. 8 ESV). He added, “The fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth.” So, “find out what pleases the Lord” (VV. 9-10).

The benefit? The light of Jesus “will shine on you” (V. 14), lighting your path. “Look carefully then how you walk,” Paul concluded (V. 15 ESV). Walking confidently in Christ’s light, we’ll bless others as we point them to Him—the source of true light.

이웃 사랑하기

늦여름 폭풍이 우리 도시를 휩쓸고 지나간 후 우리에게는 나무 때문에 손상된 집도 고치고 마당에 쌓인 나뭇잎과 가지를 치워야 할 일들이 생겼습니다. 나는 그 다음 날 손상된 것들을 손보고 나무 잔해들을 청소하며 기분을 달래려고 “이제 우리 집엔 나무가 없다!”라고 되뇌었습니다. 사실입니다. 이제 3 피트(약 90 센티미터) 크기의 작은 소나무 세 그루를 빼고는 나무가 없습니다. 그런데도 나는 폭풍으로 이웃들 나무에서 날아온 것들과 계속 떨어지는 낙엽을 꽤 많은 시간을 들여 치웁니다.

‘이웃들.’ 그들의 행동과 키운 일과 했던 말들이 우리에게 거슬릴 때 어떻게 대해야 할까요? 성경은 이것에 대해 명확하게 “네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 몸과 같이 하라”고 아홉 번이나(레위기 19:18, 마태복음 19:19, 마가복음 12:31, 갈라디아서 5:14, 야고보서 2:8 등) 언급하고 있습니다. 실제로 이것은 하나님이 우리에게 명하신 두 번째 큰 계명입니다. 첫 번째 계명은 “네 마음을 다하며 목숨을 다하며 힘을 다하며 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라” (누가복음 10:27)고 하신 것입니다. 이웃을 사랑하는 비결 중 하나는 우리가 그들을 어떻게 대하는가 하는 것입니다. 야고보는 이것에 대해 “듣기는 속히 하고 말하기는 더디 하며 성내기도 더디 하라”(1:19)고 하였습니다.

LOVING OUR NEIGHBORS

After a late summer thunderstorm ripped through our city, we had to deal with tree damage to our house, plus a major cleanup of our leaf-and-branch-strewn yard. As I spent the following day dealing with the damage and the tree debris, I tried to humor myself by repeating: “We don’t have any trees!” It’s true. Other than three tiny, three-foot-tall pines, we don’t have them. Yet I spend considerable time cleaning up after storms or falling leaves due to neighbors’ trees.

Neighbors. How do we interact with them—even when something they’ve done or grown or said bothers us? Scripture is clear on this: it states “love your neighbor as yourself” nine times—including Leviticus 19:18, Matthew 19:19, Mark 12:31, Galatians 5:14, and James 2:8. In fact, this is the second greatest commandment God has given us. The first is “Love the Lord your God with all your heart . . . soul . . . strength and . . . mind” (LUKE 10:27). One of the keys to showing love to neighbors is how we interact with them. James explained this by saying, “Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (1:19).

This isn’t always easy. It goes against our nature. Yet loving our neighbor is to be our first response. As God helps us, let’s shine Jesus’ light of love on those who share life with us—our neighbors.

오랫동안 나는 여러 가지 이유로 외로움과 싸우는 수많은 사람들을 격려하고 기도해 왔습니다. 가족들의 발길이 끊어진 요양원 입원자들, 빈집에 홀로 있지 않으려고 밖에 나와 시간을 보내는 미망인들, 마음을 털어놓을 데가 없는 교회 사역자들, 무시당하고 외로운 노숙자들 같은 사람들입니다.

외로움은 언제 누구에게나 닥칠 수 있습니다. 2023년 5월 미국 외과 의사회는 널리 퍼져가는 외로움에 대해 경종을 울리는 권고문을 발표했습니다. 미국 성인의 약 절반이 외로움을 경험한 적이 있다고 말하는데, 권고문에 의하면 외로움은 매일 12개비의 담배를 피우는 것만큼 치명적이라고 합니다.

모세는 후계자 여호수아에게 자리를 넘겨주면서 이스라엘 백성이 약속의 땅에 들어갈 때 어떤 전투도 홀로 치르지 않으리라는 것을 기억하기를 바라며, “ 너희는 강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말라 그들 앞에서 떨지 말라 이는 네 하나님 여호와 그가 너와 함께 가시며 결코 너를 떠나지 아니하시며 버리지 아니하실 것임이라”(신명기 31:6)고 말했습니다. 그는 또한 백성들의 새 지도자인 여호수아 에게 “여호와 그가 네 앞에서 가시며 너와 함께 하사 너를 떠나지 아니하시며 버리지 아니하시리라”(8절)고 상기시켜 주었습니다.

NEVER ALONE

Over the years, I’ve encouraged and prayed for many people battling loneliness for various reasons: nursing home residents whose family members don’t visit, the widow who spends her days outside so as not to be alone in her empty house, ministry leaders who don’t have anyone to confide in, and homeless people who feel ignored and alone.

Loneliness can strike anyone at any time. The US Surgeon General released an advisory in May 2023 alerting the public about the epidemic of loneliness. About half of US adults say they’ve experienced loneliness, which can be as deadly as smoking a dozen cigarettes daily, according to the advisory.

When Moses was getting ready to pass the torch to his successor, Joshua, he wanted to make sure the Israelites knew they wouldn’t be facing any battles alone as they entered the promised land: “Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (DEUTERONOMY 31:6). He also reminded their new leader, Joshua, that “the Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (V. 8).

And he concluded with words that can encourage us today: “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (V. 8).

When we’re facing loneliness, let’s take comfort in knowing that God will never leave or forsake us.

영원히 신실하신 분

미국 역사상 가장 인명 피해가 컸던 산불은 위스콘신주 북동부에서 발생한 페쉬티고 화재였습니다. 우리에게 더 많이 알려진 시카고 화재와 같은 날(1871년 10월 8일) 밤에 발생한 이 화재는 수백 명 더 많은 사망자를 냈습니다. 목재 건축과 일부 목재 산업으로 빠르게 성장하던 페쉬티고시가 돌풍으로 거세진 화염으로 한 시간 만에 다 타버린 것입니다.

불에 그을린 도자기와 벽돌 화로 말고도 화재 후 남겨진 몇 가지 물건 중에는 펼쳐진 작은 성경책이 있었습니다. 불길에 표지가 탔고 뜨거운 열기에 책이 화석처럼 굳었지만 성경책은 그대로 보존되어 있었습니다. 지금도 그 도시 박물관에 가면 그 성경을 볼 수 있습니다.

보존된 그 작은 성경책은 하나님이 또 다른 고난의 시간에 그의 백성에게 주신 확신을 떠올려 줍니다. “풀은 마르고 꽃은 시드나 우리 하나님의 말씀은 영원히 서리라”(이사야 40:8). 침략의 “불길이 타오르고” 포로가 될 위협이 있었지만, 하나님은 그의 언약에 신실하시고 그분께 돌아오는 이들을 무슨 일이 있어도 저버리지 않겠다고 분명히 말씀하셨습니다.

지금도 일부 읽을 수 있는 페쉬티고의 그 성경책은 화재 당시 시편 106 편과 107편이 펼쳐져 있었습니다. 두 시편 모두 첫 문장이 “여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다”로 시작합니다. 우리 삶에 아무리 큰 시련이 닥쳐도 하나님의 말씀과 사랑은 결코 흔들리지 않습니다. 바로 그 사실 때문에 우리는 하나님께 영원히 감사하게 될 것입니다.

FOREVER FAITHFUL

The deadliest forest fire disaster in US history was the Peshtigo Fire in Northeast Wisconsin. It occurred on the same night as the better-known Chicago Fire (October 8, 1871) but claimed several hundred more lives. Peshtigo, a fast-growing city of wooden buildings and part of the lumber industry, was consumed within an hour by the inferno fanned by gusting winds.

Besides scorched china and a brick kiln, among the few items the fire left behind was a small, open Bible. Flames had singed its cover and extreme heat had petrified its pages, yet it remained intact. It can be viewed in a museum in the city today.

The little Bible’s preservation calls to mind an assurance God gave His people in another trying time: “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever” (ISAIAH 40:8). Though “firestorms” of invasion and exile threatened, God affirmed that He would be faithful to His promises and would never forsake those who turned to Him—come what may.

The Bible in Peshtigo, still partially legible, was opened to Psalms 106 and 107. Both psalms contain these words in their first verses: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Even in the greatest trials of our lives, His words and love never falter. And we will thank Him forever because of it.

“하나님께 맡기라”는 글귀가 사면에 붙어있는 상자 안에는 이미 기도 쪽지들이 가득했지만 케일라는 눈살을 찌푸리며 한 장을 더 밀어 넣었습니다. 그녀는 한숨을 내쉬며 이전에 상자에 넣어둔 기도 제목들을 훑어보았습니다. 케일라가 친구에게 물었습니다. “나는 이 기도 제목 들을 거의 매일 큰 소리로 읽는데, 하나님이 내 기도를 듣고 계시는지 어떻게 알 수 있을까?” 샨텔이 케일라에게 자기의 성경책을 건네 주며 말했습니다. “약속을 지키시는 하나님을 믿고, 기도나 기도문으로 하나님의 손에 넘겨드린 것은 이제부터 다 내려놓아 봐.”

바울 사도는 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 “주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라”고 권면하는데, 그렇게 해야 할 분명한 이유로 ”주께서 가까우시다”는 사실을 그들 에게 확신시켜 줍니다(빌립보서 4:4-5). 그는 하나님의 사람들에게 걱정 대신 믿음의 기도를 하고, 하나님이 모든 기도를 들으신다는 것을 믿고, 그 하나님의 영원 하신 임재 속에 놀라운 평강을 누리며 하나님을 찬양하라고 권면합니다(6-7절).

우리가 우리 생각들을 예수님의 성품처럼 “참되며”, “옳으며”, “정결하며” “칭찬 받을 만한”(8절) 것들로 채울 때 평강의 왕이신 예수님은 우리의 정서와 생각을 건강하게 지켜 주십니다.

평강의 하나님이 우리와 함께하신다는 것을 믿을 때 하나님의 평강이 우리를 지켜줍니다. 우리를 얽매는 근심의 짐에서 벗어나 하나님의 신실하신 손에 모든 기도를 맡겨드릴 때 우리는 평강을 경험할 수 있습니다.

PEACE IN THE RELEASE

Kayla’s brow furrowed as she shoved yet another slip of paper into an overstuffed box labeled “Give It to God” on all four sides. Sighing deeply, she sifted through the written prayers she had previously placed in the box. “I read them out loud almost every day,” she said to her friend. “How can I be sure God hears me?” Chantel handed Kayla her Bible. “By trusting that God keeps His word,” she said, “and letting go every time you write or read a prayer you’ve released into His hands.”

The apostle Paul urged believers in Jesus to “rejoice in the Lord” and gave good reason to do so by affirming, “The Lord is near” (PHILIPPIANS 4:4-5). He encouraged God’s people to trade anxious thoughts for faith-filled prayers, to believe He receives every request, and to praise Him while resting in the unfathomable peace of His never-ending presence (VV. 6-7).

The Prince of Peace—Jesus—guards our emotional and mental well-being when we turn our thoughts toward qualities that point to Him, things that are “true,” “right,” “pure,” and “praiseworthy” (V. 8).

The peace of God protects us when we trust that the God of peace is with us. Liberated from the burden of clinging to concerns, we can experience peace in the release of every prayer into God’s trustworthy hands.

하나님의 가족

1863년, 에드윈은 저지 시티의 어느 역 철도 승강장에 서 있었는데, 한 젊은이가 많은 인파 때문에 객차 반대쪽으로 밀려 기차와 승강장 사이의 틈으로 떨어지는 위험한 순간을 보게 되었습니다. 기차가 막 움직이려 하자 에드윈은 손을 뻗어 가까스로 그를 구해냈습니다.

구출된 사람은 아브라함 링컨 대통령의 아들 로버트 토드 링컨이었습니다. 로버트는 나중에 회고하기를 자기를 구해준 에드윈 부스는 유명한 배우여서 “얼굴을 쉽게 알아봤다”고 하였습니다. 그런데 그는 2년 후 대통령을 암살한 또 다른 배우 존 윌크스 부스의 형이었습니다.

이 역사적인 기이한 일은 우리에게 현실의 엄연함을 보여줍니다. 우리는 어느 가정에 태어날지 선택하지 못합니다. 형제자매나 부모님이 잘못된 선택을 한 것일 수 있고, 어쩌면 우리가 모든 것을 엉망으로 만든 장본인일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 성경은 가정에 대한 하나님의 계획에 대해 이렇게 말해줍니다. “무릇 하나님의 영으로 인도함을 받는 사람은 곧 하나님의 아들이라”(로마서 8:14). 하나님의 자녀인 “우리는 [그의] 상속자”(17절)입니다. 놀랍게도 우리는 하나님을 “아빠, 아버지”(15절)라고 부를 수 있게 되었습니다.

우리는 이 땅에서 우리 자신의 역기능적 가정 문제로 오랫동안 씨름할 지도 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님이 우리의 영적인 유산을 바꾸어 놓으셨다는 사실에 우리는 위안을 얻을 수 있습니다. 하나님이 우리를 그분의 가족으로 삼으신 것입니다. 무엇보다 가장 귀중한 것은 하나님이 우리로 그분을 우리 아버지라고 부를 수 있게 하신 것입니다.

THE FAMILY OF GOD

It was 1863. Edwin stood on a railroad platform in Jersey City. He watched as a young man was forced by crowds against a train car. The man dangerously fell into the crevice between the train and the platform. The train started to move. Edwin reached down and, at the last minute, pulled the man to safety.

The saved man was Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln. Robert later wrote that his rescuer’s “face was of course well known to me,” because Edwin Booth was a famous actor. In fact, he was the brother of another actor—John Wilkes Booth—who would assassinate the president two years later.

This historical oddity illustrates a reality for us. We don’t choose the family we’re born into. Perhaps our siblings or parents made wrong choices. Maybe we’re the ones who’ve made a mess of everything. But the Bible tells of God’s family plan: “those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (ROMANS 8:14). As His children, “we are [his] heirs” (V. 17). Amazingly, we’re invited to call Him “Abba, Father” (V. 15).

We may long wrestle with the dysfunctions of our earthly family. But we can take comfort that God has changed our spiritual heritage. He adopts us into His family. Most precious of all—He invites us to call Him our Father.

삶이 공평하지 않을 때

찰스 디킨스의 고전 소설 ‘올리버 트위스트’에서 병약한 올리버는 가난한 사람들을 착취하는 것으로 악명 높은 부랑인 시설에서 태어납니다. 나면서부터 고아인 이 소년은 학대를 피해 도망쳐 나옵니다. 놀라운 “반전들”을 거치며 아이는 자신이 상당한 재산의 상속자라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 행복한 결말을 좋아했던 디킨스는 올리버에게 여러 해 동안 해를 끼친 모든 사람들이 벌을 받거나 회개하게 만들었습니다. 올리버는 “땅을 상속받는” 한편, 그를 억압했던 자들은 마땅히 받아야 할 것을 받았습니다. 삶이 디킨스의 소설처럼 깔끔하게 끝나기만 한다면 얼마나 좋을까요!

성경에도 정의가 실현되고 억압받는 자가 “땅을 차지하는”(시편 37:9) 날을 기다리던 한 사람의 노래가 있습니다. 시편을 쓴 다윗은 불의를 직접 경험하면서도 끝까지 참아냈습니다. 그는 “여호와 앞에 잠잠하고 참고 기다리라 자기 길이 형통하며 악한 죄를 이루는 자 때문에 불평하지 말지어다”(7절)라고 했습니다. 그는 이어서 “진실로 악을 행하는 자들은 끊어질 것이나 여호와를 소망하는 자들은 땅을 차지하리로다”(9절)라고 기록했습니다. 다윗은 “악인이 칼을 빼고 활을 당겨 가난하고 궁핍한 자를 엎드러뜨림”(14절)을 보면서도 하나님이 모든 것을 바로 잡으실 것을 믿었습니다(15절).

WHEN LIFE IS UNFAIR

In Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist, the sickly Oliver is born in a workhouse, an institution notorious for exploiting the poor. Orphaned at birth, the boy eventually runs away due to abusive treatment. Through an amazing set of “twists,” he learns he is heir to a sizable fortune. Dickens, who loved happy endings, ensured that everyone who harmed Oliver over the years either received justice or repented. His oppressors got what they deserved while Oliver “inherited the land.” If only life came with tidy endings like those scripted in a Dickens novel.

In the Bible, we read the song lyrics by a man who anticipated such a day—when justice is served and the oppressed “inherit the land” (PSALM 37:9). Though he experienced evil firsthand, the poet David urged patience. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him,” he wrote. “Do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes” (V. 7). He continued, “Those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land” (V. 9). Despite observing how the “wicked draw the sword” to “bring down the poor and needy” (V. 14), David trusted God to make things right (V. 15).

Life is hard and often unfair. Yet we hear in the words of Jesus an echo from Psalm 37. “Blessed are the meek,” He said, “for they shall inherit the earth” (MATTHEW 5:5).

그리스도처럼 보이려면

1950-60년대에 어린 아이였던 나는 “미국의 인기 취미활동”이 야구였던 시대에 자랐습니다. 공원에 가서 야구하는 것을 너무 좋아했고 가장 설레였던 기억 중 하나는 우리 팀 이름인 ‘자이언츠’ 가 선명하게 새겨진 야구 셔츠를 받았을 때였습니다. 비록 등번호 9가 나를 다른 사람들과 구별하고 있었지만, 우리가 똑같이 입는 유니폼은 우리를 같은 팀으로 나타내 주었습니다.

성경에서 팔복의 가르침으로 알려진 마태복음 5:3-10에서 예수님은 천국에 속한 사람들이 그리스도와 같은 “옷을 입은” 사람들이라고 말합니다. 천국은 그들의 왕인 예수님의 모습과 성격을 닮은 사람들로 구성됩니다. 예수님이 말하는 “복된” 사람들은 외모나 건강, 또는 재산으로 특징지어지지 않습니다. 오히려 중요한 것은 사람의 속과 마음입니다. “심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니”(3절)라고 했습니다. 이들은 영적으로 궁핍함을 스스로 아는 겸손한 사람들을 말합니다. “의에 주리고 목마른 자는 복이 있나니”(6절)라고 했습니다. 이들은 영혼의 갈망이 하나님을 즐거워하고 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 사람들을 말합니다. “화평하게 하는 자는 복이 있나니”(9절)라고 했습니다. 이들은 화합을 추구하며 예수님과 함께 하는 사람들을 말합니다.

LOOKING LIKE CHRIST

As a child of the 1950s and ’60s, I grew up in the era when “America’s pastime” was baseball. I couldn’t wait to go to the park and play ball, and one of my greatest thrills was when I received my baseball jersey emblazoned with our team’s name— GIANTS! Though the number 9 on the back distinguished me from the others, the common uniform identified us as being on the same team.

In Matthew 5:3-10, known as the Beatitudes, Jesus identifies those who belong to the kingdom of heaven as those who “wear the jersey” of Christlikeness. The kingdom of heaven is comprised of those who assume the posture and character of their king. According to Jesus, “blessed” persons aren’t characterized by external appearance, health, or possessions. Rather, it’s the inside or heart of a person that counts. “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (V. 3)—the humble—those who are spiritually needy and know it. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” (V. 6)—those whose soul’s yearning is to please and honor God. “Blessed are the peacemakers” (V. 9)—those who join Jesus in the pursuit of harmony.

As the Spirit helps us, we can put on the garment of Christlikeness, which identifies us as believers in Jesus and members of His team. As such, we’re blessed indeed!

한밤중에도 연락할 수 있는 친구

“모든 일이 잘못되었을 때 당신은 한밤중에 누구에게 연락할 수 있습니까?” 몇 년 전, 이 질문을 처음 들었을 때 나는 충격에 빠졌습니다. 내가 도움이 필요할 때 신세 질 수 있을 만큼 든든한 친분관계는 과연 몇 명이나 될까? 나는 확신이 없었습니다.

성경은 우정에 관하여 이런 말을 합니다. 비밀을 지키며(잠언 11:13; 16:28), 서로 권고하며(27:9), 피차 경계선을 지키며(25:17), 신뢰할 수 있는 친구들. 그러나 예수님만큼 우정을 강하게 정의한 사람은 없을 것입니다. 우리는 광고주에게는 시장이고 고용주에게는 직원이지만, 모두의 주가 되시는 예수님께 우리는 “친구”입니다(요한복음 15:15). 예수님은 자신의 우정을 하나님의 사랑을 함께 나누고 개인적 희생 위에 세워진 관계로 묘사하셨습니다 (13, 15절). 그것은 예수님께서 친히 본을 보이셨고 전해 주시기 위하여 우리를 부르신 우정입니다(12절).

그 질문을 듣고 몇 년 후 우리 부부는 아주 가까운 사람을 잃었습니다. 그 일을 아는 몇 안 되는 사람 중 하나인 대런은 나를 만나려고 2시간을 운전하여 와서 나의 분노와 고통을 듣고 나를 위해 기도했습니다. 대런은 할 일이 많아서 하루가 바쁜 사람입니다. 그러나 그는 예수님의 본을 따라 희생적인 우정을 보여 주었습니다. 나에게는 정말 필요할 때 도와줄 사람이 있었던 것입니다.

이제 문제는 다른 사람들이 나를 “한밤중에 연락할 수 있는 친구”로 생각 하는지 여부입니다. 내가 한 사람의 좋은 친구가 되는 것이 친구를 더 많이 사귈 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법이니까요.

A FRIEND AT MIDNIGHT

“Who can you call at midnight when everything has gone wrong?” This question shook me when I first heard it years ago. How many of my friendships were strong enough that I could impose on them in my hour of need? I wasn’t sure.

Scripture has much to say about friendship, describing a friend as someone who keeps confidences (PROVERBS 11:13; 16:28), shares advice (27:9), and respects boundaries (25:17). But perhaps no one defined friendship more powerfully than Jesus. While to advertisers we are markets and to employers we are staff, to Him, the Master of all, we are “friends” (JOHN 15:15). Jesus described His kind of friendship as being built on shared love of God and personal sacrifice (VV. 13, 15)—something He Himself modeled and called us to pass on (V. 12).

A couple of years after hearing that question, my wife and I suffered a significant loss. Darren, one of the few who knew what happened, traveled two hours to see me, listen to my anger and pain, and pray for me. Darren is a busy man who had plenty of other things to do with his day. But he followed Jesus’ example of sacrificial friendship. I really did have someone in my hour of need.

The question now is whether others have a “friend at midnight” in me. For there are few better ways to make more friends than to be one.
