구원하시는 하나님

스코틀랜드 브로라 지역의 거친 절벽 아래 구조를 기다리는 양 한 마리가 있었습니다. 한쪽은 가파르고 험한 바위로, 다른 한쪽은 넓은 바다에 막힌 절벽 밑에 갇혀 이 양은 2년을 홀로 지냈습니다. 몇 차례 구조를 시도했지만 아무도 그 양에게 다가갈 수 없었습니다. 그러던 중 캐미 윌슨 이라는 한 농부가 세 친구와 함께 작정하고 나서서 위험한 구조 작업을 성공 시켰습니다. 그들은 윈치를 사용하여 아주 용감하게 절벽 아래로 약 820 피트 (250 미터)를 조심스레 내려가 양을 들어 올려 양이 처한 곤경에서 구해냈습니다.

동정어린 마음으로 결단하여 이 일을 한 농부와 친구들은 예레미야 23:1-3에 기록된 사랑 많으신 하나님의 자비를 보여줍니다. 선지자는 유다의 악한 지도자들을 일컬어 “[하나님의] 목장의 양 떼를 멸하며 흩어지게 하는” 목자라고 규탄했습니다(1절). 그들이 하나님의 연약한 백성들을 무자비하게 대했기 때문에 하나님은 예레미야를 통해 그들에게 “보응할” 것이라고 선언 하셨습니다(2절). 하나님은 그의 양떼가 흩어져 고난 받는 것을 보시며 깊이 근심하셨습니다. 그러나 하나님은 걱정만 하시지 않고 그의 양들을 사로잡힌 곳에서 정성스레 다시 모아 안전하고 풍요한 곳으로 인도하시겠다고 말씀 하셨습니다(3절).

우리가 길을 잃거나 갇히거나 고립되었다고 느낄 때, 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지께서는 우리의 고난을 보시고 그대로 내버려두지 않으십니다. 하나님은 적극적으로 우리를 구원하시고 회복시켜 주십니다.

THE GOD WHO RESCUES

Beneath the rugged cliffs of Brora, Scotland, a sheep needed rescue. Trapped at the base of a cliff, surrounded by steep and unyielding rock on one side and the vast ocean on the other, the sheep had been on its own for two long years. Despite several rescue attempts, no one could reach her until a determined farmer named Cammy Wilson and four friends successfully executed a risky rescue mission. Three members of the team carefully descended nearly 820 feet down the cliff to get her, using a winch and a lot of courage to lift her out of her predicament.

The determined and sympathetic farmer and team reflect the compassion of our loving Father as depicted in Jeremiah 23:1-3. The prophet denounced Judah’s sinful leaders as shepherds who were “destroying and scattering the sheep of [God’s] pasture!” (V. 1). God declared through Jeremiah that—due to the ruthless way they treated His helpless people—He’d “bestow punishment” on them (V. 2). He saw the plight of His scattered flock and was deeply concerned about them. Not only was God concerned, but He also said He’d lovingly regather His sheep from places of exile and bring them to a place of safety and abundance (V. 3).

When we feel lost, trapped, or isolated, our heavenly Father sees our plight and won’t leave us stranded. He actively seeks to rescue and restore us.

얽매는 것들

수박 덩굴이 우리 집 정원을 뒤덮었습니다. 덩굴은 돌길을 지나 담장을 타고 올랐는데, 내가 좋아하는 채소들까지 감아버릴 정도로 아주 심각했습니다. 어떤 조치를 취하지 않으면 정원이 살아남지 못하리라는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 어느 저녁에 채소 줄기와 잎에서 덩굴을 떼어내기 시작했습니다. 그러다가 덩굴이 다시 자라면 제거하기를 계속 반복하니 마침내 채소가 잘 자라 탐스러운 토마토와 반짝이는 고추가 달렸습니다.

탐욕, 욕망, 증오 같은 죄는 내 정원을 덮어버렸던 덩굴처럼 우리 삶을 덮어버릴 수 있습니다. 잘못된 생각의 씨앗을 그냥 놔 두면 자라서 “얽매이기 쉬운 죄”(히브리서 12:1)처럼 우리의 욕구와 행동을 지배하게 되고 영적 성장을 막을 수 있습니다.

히브리서 저자는 “인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를” 하기 위해 “모든 무거운 것”을 벗어 버리라고 권면합니다(1절). 자유를 누리려면 우리의 죄를 처리해 줄 어떤 도움이 필요하다는 것을 인정해야 합니다. 그러나 죄가 심각한 문제가 아니라고 스스로에게, 다른 사람들에게 말해왔다면 도움이 필요하다는 사실을 받아들이기가 힘들 수 있습니다.

문제를 진심으로 인정하면 예수님은 우리의 고백을 기쁘게 받으시고 바로 용서해 주십니다(요한1서 1:9). 예수님은 우리의 생활 습관을 바꾸는 방법을 보여주시고, 성령의 능력을 통해 우리의 성장을 방해하는 속박을 극복하도록 도와주십니다.

ENTANGLED

Watermelon vines had overtaken my garden. They snaked across the stone path, climbed the fence, and worst of all tried to choke my favorite vegetable plants. I knew the garden wouldn’t thrive unless I took action. So one evening I went to work uncurling tendrils from stems and leaves. When the coils grew back, I kept removing them until the vegetable plants finally matured and produced plump tomatoes and shiny peppers.

Sins like greed, lust, and hate can overtake our lives like the vines that tried to dominate my garden. Left untended, the seed of a wrong thought may develop until it controls our desires and actions like a “sin that so easily entangles” (HEBREWS 12:1) and holds us back from growing spiritually.

The writer of Hebrews encourages us to “throw off everything that hinders” so that we can “run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (V. 1). To break free requires that we acknowledge we need help to handle the sin. This can be difficult if we’ve convinced ourselves and others that it’s not a serious issue.

Once we sincerely admit the problem, Jesus welcomes our prayers of confession and forgives us immediately (1 JOHN 1:9). He can show us how to change our life patterns and, through the power of the Holy Spirit, help us to overcome the bondage that prevents us from flourishing.

하나님께 맡기라

암벽 타기를 하던 중 높이 매달려 있던 세라는 잡고 버티던 손에서 점점 힘이 빠져나가면서 공포가 밀려왔습니다. ‘땅에 세게 부딪히면 어떡하지?’ 걱정이 되었습니다.

그러나 지도요원이 아래쪽에서 계속 소리 지르며 안심시켰습니다. 세라의 안전벨트에 연결된 밧줄의 다른 쪽 끝에 묶여 있는 그 사람의 몸무게가 세라가 떨어지더라도 그녀를 지탱해줄 것이기 때문이었습니다. 지도요원이 소리쳤습니다. “내가 당신보다 훨씬 무거워요! 그냥 손을 놓아요”

그래서 세라는 손을 놓았습니다. 그리고 암벽에서 멀어져 안전하게 공중에 매달렸습니다.

이 사건을 통해 세라는 시편 18편 2절에 기록된 하나님의 새로운 모습을 보게 되었습니다. “여호와는 나의 반석이시요 나의 요새시요 나를 건지시는 이시요... 나의 바위시요.. 나의 산성이시로다.” 세라는 고백합니다. “하나님은 내 모든 문제보다 훨씬 더 무거운 분이시기 때문에 내 걱정과 두려움을 그냥 놓아버리면 됩니다. 그러면 하나님이 나를 붙잡아 주십니다.”

다윗 왕은 “많은 물”, 곧 그에게 “재앙의 날”을 가져다주려던 “강한 원수들” 에게서 하나님의 구원을 받고 나서(16-18절) 시편 18편 찬송을 불렀습니다. 그의 문제가 다 사라진 것은 아니었지만, 이 일로 다윗은 전능하신 구원자를 믿을 수 있으며 그 하나님이 그를 꽉 붙잡고 계시다는 것을 알았습니다.

LEAVE IT WITH GOD

Perched high on the climbing wall, Sarah could feel panic rising as her weakening fingers began losing grip on the handholds. Just how hard will I hit the ground? she wondered.

But the instructor kept calling out assurances from below. As the “belayer” tethered to the other end of the rope tied to Sarah’s harness through a pulley, his weight would hold her if she fell. “I’m much heavier than you!” he yelled. “Just let go.”

So she did—and simply swung away from the wall to dangle safely in the air.

The incident gave Sarah a new perspective of the picture of God in Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock . . . my stronghold.” Sarah observed, “God is so much heavier than all my problems. I can let go of my worries and fears, and He’ll catch me.”

King David sang the words of Psalm 18 after God rescued him from “deep waters”—these were his “powerful [enemies]” looking to bring about his “day of . . . disaster” (VV. 16-18). Even if his troubles didn’t disappear, he knew he could trust his all-powerful Savior and that God was holding on to him tightly.

하나님의 뜻 안에 굳게 서서

1957년의 전쟁 영화 ‘콰이 강의 다리’가 크게 인기를 끌어 사람들이 실제로 철교를 보러 태국 깐차나부리로 몰려들었습니다. 사람들은 철교를 찾았지만 그 다리는 콰이 강 위에 있지 않았습니다. 영화에서 강의 이름을 잘못 표기했던 것입니다! 그러나 사람들의 기대에 부응하기 위해 다리가 있는 매끌롱 강의 그 부분을 콰이로 이름을 바꾸었습니다.

예수님은 다른 사람들의 기대 때문에 하나님에게서 받은 사명을 바꾸시지 않았습니다. 당시 사람들은 예수님이 행하신 표적과 기적을 듣고 예수님을 보려고 몰려들었습니다(요한복음 6:2). 그들이 예수님을 발견하고 그가 약속된 메시아임을 믿게 되면서 예수님이 군사 지도자가 되어 로마의 통치에서 자신 들을 구원해주기를 원했습니다. 요한은 이렇게 말합니다. “예수께서 그들이 와서 자기를 억지로 붙들어 임금으로 삼으려는 줄 아시고 다시 혼자 산으로 떠나 가시니라”(15절).

자신들이 원하는 방식으로 구원받기를 원하는 사람들의 압박을 물리치고, 예수님은 그들에게 필요한 방식으로 구원하시려는 하나님의 계획을 굳게 따르셨습니다(골로새서 1:13). 하나님의 계획은 그들을 세상의 고난으로부터가 아닌, “죄와 사망”의 권세로부터 구원하는 것이었습니다(로마서 8:2).

우리에게 필요한 것을 주시려는 예수님의 흔들리지 않는 의지 때문에 우리는 어떤 상황에서도 예수님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 방법이 우리의 기대와 맞지 않아 보일 때에도 우리는 그분의 계획이 항상 더 낫다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리를 구원하시려는 흔들림 없는 의지를 가지고 계시기 때문입니다.

STEADFAST IN GOD’S WILL

The 1957 war movie The Bridge on the River Kwai was so popular that fans flocked to Kanchanaburi in Thailand to look for the real-life iron bridge. They found the bridge, but it wasn’t on the Kwai—the movie got the river’s name wrong! Soon, however, that part of the Mae Klong River was renamed Kwae Yai (Kwai) so it would align with people’s expectations.

Jesus never let the expectations of others cause Him to waver in His divine mission. People flocked to see Him because they heard of the signs and miracles He’d performed (JOHN 6:2). When they found Him and believed that He was the promised Messiah, they wanted Him as a military leader so He’d save them from Roman rule. John says, “Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself” (V. 15).

Despite the pressure to rescue people the way they wanted, Christ resolutely followed God’s plan to rescue them the way they needed to be rescued (COLOSSIANS 1:13)—not from earthly troubles but from the power of “sin and death” (ROMANS 8:2).

Jesus’ unwavering will to provide what we need is why we can trust Him in all circumstances. When God’s ways don’t seem to align with our expectations, we can be assured that His plan is always better—because He doesn’t waver in His will to save us.

하나님께서... 나방을 보내셨다?

“아악!” 딸이 소리를 질렀습니다. “아빠! 이리 와봐요!” 나는 무슨 일인지 벌써 알고 있었습니다. 나방 때문이었습니다. 봄철이 되면 가루를 날리는 나방 떼가 네브라스카 평원에서 콜로라도 산맥으로 이동해 거기서 여름을 보냅니다. 우리는 해마다 이들의 이동에 대비해야 합니다. 그런데 올해는 유난히 더 심했습니다.

밀러 나방은 종종 사람들에게는 얼굴로 바로 날아드는 고약한 벌레이지만 새들에게는 ‘진수성찬’입니다. 조금 검색을 해보니 밀러 나방이 이 지역의 제비들에게 훌륭한 영양소가 된다고 합니다. 사람에겐 성가시기 짝이 없는 이 나방이 새들에게는 진정 나방 “만나”인 것입니다.

예수님 시대에도 이스라엘에 나방의 대이동이 있었는지 모르겠습니다. 그러나 예수님은 하나님께서 새들도 먹이시는 것을 잘 아시고 산상수훈에서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “공중의 새를 보라 심지도 않고 거두지도 않고 창고에 모아들이지도 아니하되 너희 하늘 아버지께서 기르시나니 너희는 이것들보다 귀하지 아니하냐”(마태복음 6:26).

그래서 요즘은 나방을 다르게 바라봅니다. 그냥 지저분한 해충이 아니라 하나님께서 손수 지으신 것들을 공급하시는 모습을 상기시키는 날벌레로, 또 나의 필요도 공급하시는 하나님의 살아있는 비유로 바라봅니다. 제비를 위해서도 이렇게 넉넉히 공급하시는 하나님이시라면 우리를 위해서는 얼마나 더 잘 돌보시겠습니까?

AND GOD SENT . . . MOTHS?

“AaaaAAAAHHHK!” my daughter shrieked. “DaaaaDDDYY! Get UP here!” I knew what was wrong: a moth. Every spring, an armada of these dusty insects migrates from the plains of Nebraska to the mountains of Colorado, where they summer. Each year, we brace for their arrival. This year had been especially bad.

To humans, miller moths are unwanted pests that often fly right into your face. But to birds, well, it’s a feast. Doing a little research, I learned that the moths provide incredible nutrition for the region’s swallows. As annoying as they are, these moths are veritable moth “manna” for the birds.

I don’t know if Israel had moth migrations in Jesus’ day. But Christ took note of God’s provision for the birds there, saying in the Sermon on the Mount, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (MATTHEW 6:26).

So these days, I look at moths differently. Not as dirty pests but as winged reminders of God’s provision for His creation—and as a living metaphor for His provision for me too. If God provides so richly for the swallows, how much more does He care for me and for you?

그리스도 안에서 하나됨

흑인으로는 처음으로 시집을 출간한 시인 필리스 휘틀리는 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 노예제도를 폐지하도록 설득하기 위해 성경 속의 주제를 사용했습니다. 1753년경 서아프리카에서 태어난 휘틀리는 겨우 일곱 살에 노예 상인에게 팔렸습니다. 그러나 이 소녀는 학교에 들어가 곧 뛰어난 자질을 발휘했고 마침내 1773년에 자유를 얻었습니다. 휘틀리는 시와 서신을 통해 독자들에게 모든 사람이 동등하다는 성경의 확실한 말씀을 받아들이도록 설득했습니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “하나님께서 모든 사람의 가슴에 한가지 원리를 심어 놓으셨습니다. 그것은 곧 자유를 사랑하는 마음입니다. 그것은 억압을 관용하지 않으며, 구원을 목말라 찾는 것입니다. 이 원리는 바로 우리 모두 안에 살아 있습니다.”

ONE IN CHRIST

Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American poet, used biblical themes to persuade believers in Jesus to abolish slavery. Born around 1753 in western Africa, Wheatley was sold to a slave trader at only seven years of age. Quicky distinguishing herself as a remarkable student, she finally secured her emancipation in 1773. In her poems and correspondence, Wheatley pressed her readers to embrace the scriptural affirmation of the equality of all people. She wrote, “In every human Breast, God has implanted a Principle, which we call Love of Freedom; It is impatient of Oppression, and pants for Deliverance; and . . . the same Principle lives in us.”

Equality before God is a truth emphasized by Paul when he wrote, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (GALATIANS 3:28). Because we’re “all children of God through faith” (V. 26), differences such as race, ethnicity, gender, or social status shouldn’t lead to discrimination in the church.

Even as equal recipients of God’s love, we still struggle to live out this principle. But Scripture teaches that diverse peoples united through faith in Christ best reflect God’s heart and is His plan for life in eternity. That reality can help us to celebrate the diversity in our communities of faith now.

보통 사람이란 없다

내가 이용하는 은행의 벽에 붙은 글을 보니 그 은행의 기업 신조는 ‘예의’라는 이 한 마디로 요약될 수 있다고 말하고 있었습니다. 그리고 거기서 내 거래를 도와준 창구 직원의 예의바른 태도에 나는 참으로 기분이 좋았습니다!

험하고 불친절한 세상에서 ‘예의’를 중시하며 산다는 것은 큰 의미가 있습니다. 우리는 바울 사도가 동역자 디도에게 보낸 편지에서 그 의미를 알 수 있습니다. 그는 디도에게 그의 회중들에게 “아무도 비방하지 말며 다투지 말며 관용하며 범사에 온유함을 모든 사람에게 나타낼 것을”(디도서 3:2) 기억하게 하라고 했습니다. 예의라는 개념은 “편안하고 사려 깊음” 또는 “모든 배려를 보여줌”으로 바꾸어 말할 수 있습니다.

우리가 사람들을 대하는 태도에서 사람을 하나님의 형상을 지닌 존재로 보는지 아닌지가 나타납니다. 이에 대해 C.S. 루이스는 그의 책 ‘영광의 무게’ 에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “보통 사람이란 없다. 우리가 만난 사람들 중에 죽으면 그것으로 끝날 사람은 아무도 없다.” 루이스는 영원을 예상하면서, 거기서 우리는 하나님의 임재를 영원히 누리든지, 아니면 하나님으로부터 영원히 떨어지든지 둘 중의 하나가 될 것이라고 했습니다. 그래서 그는 우리에게 이렇게 상기시켜 줍니다. “우리가 농담을 나누고 함께 일하고 결혼하고 무시하고 착취 하기도 하는 그 사람들 모두가 영원한 존재이다. 영원한 공포이거나 영원한 영화의 존재인 것이다.”

우리 모두 성령의 인도하심을 따라 우리가 만나는 사람들을 하나님의 형상을 지닌 바로 그런 사람으로 대할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

NO ORDINARY PEOPLE

The statement on the wall of my bank declares that its corporate principles could be summed up in a single word: courtesy. And how refreshing it was to find courtesy in the teller who helped me with my transaction there!

In a harsh and unkind world, to be driven by courtesy is a big idea. We find this concept in the apostle Paul’s letter to his friend Titus. He instructed Titus to remind his congregation “to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people” (TITUS 3:2 esv). This idea of courtesy is also rendered as “peaceable and considerate” (niv) or “showing every consideration” (nasb).

How we treat others reveals whether we see them as image bearers of God or not. C. S. Lewis wrote of this in The Weight of Glory: “There are no ordinary people,” he said. “You have never talked to a mere mortal.” Lewis anticipated eternity, where we’ll either enjoy God’s presence or be banished from Him forever. So he reminds us, “It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.”

May we allow the Spirit to enable us to treat those around as what they truly are—image bearers of God.

하나님의 약속에 매달림

웬디는 조금 소외감을 느꼈습니다. 점심시간에 웬디의 상사가 웬디만 빼고 모두의 책상에 초콜릿을 놓아두었기 때문입니다. 웬디는 이상해서 친구에게 “왜 나만 뺐을까?”하며 속상해했습니다.

그 일에 대해 상사는 이렇게 설명했습니다. “그 초콜릿은 아직 괜찮긴 한데 좀 오래된 거라서. 웬디는 임신중이라 내가 더 조심한 거예요. 다른 사람 들이야 뭐...” 이러면서 그는 웃었습니다.

이 작은 사건은 사무실에서 농담거리가 되었지만, 나에게는 우리가 때때로 이해와 지각의 한계로 하나님의 의도를 잘못 읽을 때가 있다는 것을 생각하게 해주었습니다. 우리는 하나님이 언제나 (그렇습니다, 언제나) 우리에게 가장 좋은 것을 마음에 두고 계신다는 사실을 잊고, 자신이 억울하게 부당한 대우를 받는다고 생각하기도 합니다.

CLINGING TO GOD’S PROMISES

Wendy was feeling a little left out. During lunch break, her boss had left chocolates on everyone’s desks—except hers. Puzzled, she lamented to a friend, “Why did he leave me out?”

When asked, their boss explained: “Those chocolates are still good, but they’ve been around for some time. Wendy’s pregnant, so I just wanted to play it extra safe.” Then he laughed. “As for the rest of you . . . .”

The little incident became a running joke in the office, but it got me thinking about how we sometimes misread God’s intentions because of our limited understanding and perception. We may even believe ourselves to be victims of unfair treatment, forgetting that God always has our best interests at heart. Always.

Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that while we may not fully understand God’s thoughts and ways, we can be sure that they’re “higher than [our] ways” (V. 9). Ours are often influenced by selfish desires; His are perfect, compassionate, and righteous. So even when things don’t look good for now, we can trust that God will provide what we truly need (VV. 1-2), for He’s loving and faithful to His own everlasting promise (V. 3). Let’s “call on him while he is near” (V. 6), knowing that He’ll never leave us.

성령으로 변화되다

아일랜드행 비행기를 탄 닐 더글러스는 자기 좌석에 다른 사람이 앉아 있는 것을 보고 어떻게 된 일인지 알아보려고 대화를 시작했습니다. 그런데 그 승객이 대답을 하려고 고개를 드는데 자기와 너무나 닮은 사람이었습니다! 지켜보던 승객들도 이 두 사람이 셀카를 찍는 동안 둘의 닮은 모습에 모두 웃었습니다. 나중에 두 사람은 같은 호텔에 체크인하다가 다시 마주쳤고, 세 번째로 동네 술집에서 또 마주쳤습니다. 다음날 아침 이들은 너무나 닮은 자신들의 모습 때문에 그들의 셀카가 벌써 소셜 미디어에 널리 퍼진 것을 알았습니다.

쌍둥이로 태어나지 않고도 꼭 닮는 것은 놀라운 일이지만, 성경은 우리가 하나님을 따라 살면 하나님을 더욱 닮아가기 시작한다고 말합니다. 구약 성경을 보면, 모세가 하나님을 대면한 후 그의 얼굴이 변화되어 “그 광채 때문에 이스라엘 사람들은 그의 얼굴을 제대로 바라볼 수 없었습니다”(고린도후서 3:7, 현대인의 성경; 출애굽기 34:33-35 참조).

오늘날 우리는 성령의 역사를 통해 “예수님의 형상으로 변화되는” 사람 들에게서 예수님의 영광이 나타나는 것을 봅니다(고린도후서 3:18; 8절 참조). 하나님을 아는 지식과 하나님을 향한 사랑이 자라가면 우리에게 도덕적으로 영적으로 변화가 일어나고, 이것은 우리의 내면과 외면으로 드러나게 됩니다. 하나님이 우리의 마음과 생각을 “새롭게 하실” 때 삶의 여정을 함께 하는 옆 사람들의 눈에도 그것이 분명히 보이게 됩니다.

CHANGED BY THE SPIRIT

When Neil Douglas boarded his flight to Ireland, he discovered his seat was occupied by another passenger, so he began a conversation to sort out the discrepancy. When the passenger looked up to answer, Neil was face to face with his lookalike! Onlooking passengers laughed at the men’s resemblance while the two took a selfie. Later, they ran into each other again when checking into the same hotel and a third time at a local pub. The next morning, they discovered their selfie had gone viral on social media due to their striking facial similarities.

Bearing a resemblance to another human being is a surprise for those of us without a biological twin, but the Bible says we’ll begin to look more like God as we follow Him. In the Old Testament, Moses’ countenance was changed by his face-to-face encounter with God—so much so that “the Israelites could not look steadily at [his face] because of its glory” (2 CORINTHIANS 3:7; SEE EXODUS 34:33-35).

Today, we see the glory of Jesus revealed in people who “are being transformed into his image” through the ministry of the Spirit (2 CORINTHIANS 3:18; SEE V. 8). Our growing knowledge of and love for God results in moral and spiritual transformation that’s visible both inwardly and outwardly. When God “makes over” our hearts and minds, it’s evident to our fellow travelers in this journey of life.

절망적 상황에서

에이미와 앨런 부부의 젖먹이 딸 젬의 상태는 가망이 없어 보였습니다. 18번 염색체 3개가 존재하는 삼염색체증을 가지고 태어난 아이는 며칠이나 몇 주 안에 사망할 것으로 예상되었습니다. 의사는 “치료해봐야 소용이 없습니다.”라고 차갑게 말했습니다. 그러나 엄마는 “나한테 이 아이에 대해 더 큰 꿈이 있어요.”라고 말했습니다. 부모는 젬을 집으로 데려가 사랑해 주었습니다. 그리고 기도했습니다.

‘6년이 지나’ 젬에게서 큰 종양이 발견되어 그것을 제거하기 위한 수술이 필요했습니다. 그런데 이전의 그 의사가 들어온 것입니다. 그는 “두 분이 무슨 생각을 하시는지 압니다. 하지만 제게 한 번 더 기회를 주시기를 부탁드립니다.” 라고 말했습니다. 의사는 전에 젬에 대한 자신의 판단이 틀렸던 것을 시인하며 “만회할 수 있는 기회를 주십시오.”라고 했습니다. 에이미와 앨런은 거절할 수도 있었으나 두 사람은 하나님의 용서의 힘을 알고 있었습니다.

구약의 선지자들은 하나님의 심판의 메시지를 자주 전했습니다. 그러나 그 심판의 메시지 전반에는 숨길 수 없는 하나님의 사랑과 용서와 구원의 주제가 함께 들어있습니다. 이사야는 유다의 죄를 지적하다가(44:6-20) 갑자기 초점을 바꿉니다. 그는 하나님의 말씀을 전하며 “너는 내게로 돌아오라 내가 너를 구속하였음이니라”(22절)라고 했습니다. 하나님은 본질상 그분의 성품 때문에 그의 백성을 버리지 못하십니다. 하나님은 “내가 너를 지었으니... 너는 나에게 잊혀지지 아니하리라”(21절)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 메시지의 결론은 이것입니다. “여호와께서 이 일을 행하셨으니 하늘아 노래할지어다... 여호와께서 야곱을 구속하셨도다”(23절).

HOPELESS CASES

The situation looked hopeless for Amy and Alan’s infant daughter Jem. Born with a condition called trisomy-18, she was expected to die within days or weeks. “There’s no point in treating her,” the doctor said coldly. But her mother said, “I have bigger dreams for her.” They took Jem home and loved her. And they prayed.

Six years later, Jem needed surgery to remove a large tumor that had been found. Then—the same doctor walked in. “I know what you’re thinking,” he said, “but I’m asking you for a second chance.” He admitted he’d been wrong about Jem. “I’d like a chance at redemption,” he said. Amy and Alan might have said no. But they understood the power of God’s forgiveness.

The Old Testament prophets often carried a message of God’s judgment. But woven throughout that message is the irrepressible theme of God’s love, forgiveness, and redemption. Isaiah pointed out Judah’s sins (44:6-20) but suddenly shifted focus. Speaking God’s words, he said, “Return to me, for I have redeemed you” (V. 22). God’s character wouldn’t permit Him to abandon His people. “I have made you,” He said, “I will not forget you” (V. 21). The conclusion: “Sing for joy, you heavens, for the Lord has done this; . . . the Lord has redeemed Jacob” (V. 23).

Jem’s surgery found no tumor. “A miracle!” said the doctor. The power of prayer. The power of our redeeming God.
