고통 가운데 함께하기

“아빠, 머리가 아파요.” “아빠, 너무 추워요.” “아빠, 발 좀 주물러 줄 수 있어요?” 최근 내 십대 딸은 고열과 오한을 동반하여 몸살을 심하게 앓았습니다. 딸은 내가 고통을 완화시켜 주기를 원했습니다. 그러나, 무엇보다 그저 곁에 함께 있어 주기를 원했습니다. 결국 우리는 딸을 응급진료소에 데려 갔습니다. “바이러스 감염”이라는 진단을 받았고, 특별히 할 수 있는 일은 없고 그냥 견뎌야 한다고 했습니다.

나는 그날 아픈 딸 곁에 몇 시간을 함께 있었습니다. 발을 주물러 주고, 약을 챙겨주면서, 딸의 증상이 나아지기를 간절히 바랐습니다. 이따금 이기적으로 ‘이건 정말 힘든데’라는 생각이 들기도 했습니다. 사실, 누군가의 고통을 바로 곁에서 지켜보며 함께 있는 것은 쉽지 않습니다.

욥의 친구들도 그의 고통을 바로 가까이에서 지켜봤습니다. 이 세 명은 나중에 욥을 제대로 대해주지 않았다는 이유로 자주, 그리고 어쩌면 공정하게, 비난을 받습니다. 하지만 그들이 처음에는 욥과 함께 앉아 있었다는 사실은 쉽게 잊혀집니다. “밤낮 칠 일 동안 그와 함께 땅에 앉았으나 욥의 고통이 심함을 보므로 그에게 한마디도 말하는 자가 없었더라”(욥기 2:13).

사랑하는 누군가가 아플 때, 대화를 하든 안하든 우리가 그 자리에 함께 있어주는 것 자체가 가장 중요하다는 것을 욥의 친구들은 상기시켜 줍니다. 그들이 보여준 것은 우리가 무슨 말을 해야 할지 모르더라도, 고통받는 사람과 그저 함께 앉아 있는 것이 가장 큰 선물이 될 수 있다는 것입니다.

SITTING WITH THE SUFFERING

“Daddy, my head hurts.” “Daddy, I’m so cold.” “Daddy, can you rub my feet?” A high fever, chills, and body aches recently descended cruelly upon my teenage daughter. She wanted me to make it better. But mostly she just wanted me near. Eventually we took her to urgent care. “Virus,” we were told. Nothing to do but ride it out.

I sat with my sick girl for hours that day. Rubbing her feet. Getting her medicine. Desperately wanting her to feel better. Occasionally, my selfish side complained, This is hard. Indeed, it is hard to sit with people’s suffering, to witness their hurt up close.

Job’s friends saw his suffering up close too. These three guys are often—fairly!—criticized for their later poor treatment of Job. But it’s easy to forget that, initially, they simply sat with him: “They sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was” (JOB 2:13).

Jobs’ friends remind us that when someone we love is hurting, it’s our presence—our being there, whether we speak or not—that often matters most. Their example reminds us that even though we may not always know what to say, simply sitting with someone in their suffering may be the greatest gift we can give.

스물두 명의 기독교 지도자들이 다른 나라에서 온 한 목사를 비밀리에 만나서 배우기 위해 반나절을 걸려 모였습니다. 만약 발각된다면, 그 목사는 추방되고 다른 사람들은 3년 동안 감옥에 갇힐 것입니다. 스물 두 명 중 열여덟 명은 이미 예수님을 믿는다는 이유로 투옥된 경험이 있었습니다.

목사가 자신이 가져온 성경책 15권을 나누어주자, 한 여인이 자신이 받은 성경을 다른 사람에게 양보했습니다. 다른 많은 사람들처럼, 이 여인은 만일 감옥에 가게 되더라도 지혜의 말씀을 마음에 간직할 수 있도록 성경 구절들을 외우고 있었습니다. 나중에 여인은 목사에게 그들의 교회가 그의 교회처럼 자유롭게 모일 수 있도록 기도해 달라고 부탁했습니다. 그러나 목사는 그들이 그렇게 희생하고 박해를 견디며 투옥의 위험을 무릅쓰는 깊은 신앙의 모습에 감동받아, 오히려 자신의 교회가 그들의 교회처럼 되게 해 달라고 기도했습니다.

세상 곳곳에서 믿음을 지키는 그리스도인들이 박해를 받고 있습니다. 그 중에도 어떤 이들은 다른 이들보다 더 심한 박해를 받습니다. 모든 신자들은 예수님을 따르는 일이 위험해질 때 위축될 수 있습니다. 그러나 성령님은 하나님이 주신 은사를 우리가 “능력과 사랑과 절제”(디모데후서 1:7)로 사용하도록 도와 주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 어디에 있든 담대하고도 사랑으로 복음을 전하게 하십니다. 하나님께서 우리를 위해 행하신 모든 일 때문에(9-10절), 우리는 그리스도께 헌신하는 희생적인 대가를 기꺼이 감수하고 “그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음과 사랑으로써 내게 들은 바 바른 말”(13절)을 본받아 지켜나갈 수 있습니다.

THE COST OF COMMITMENT

A group of twenty-two Christian leaders traveled half a day to secretly meet and learn from a pastor who came from another country. If caught, the pastor would be deported, and the others would spend three years in prison. Eighteen of the twentytwo had already been imprisoned for their faith in Jesus.

After the pastor handed out fifteen Bibles he’d brought with him, one woman gave hers to someone else. Like many others, she’d memorized chapters of Scripture so she would have its wisdom secured in her heart if she were to go to prison. She later asked the pastor to pray that their church would be free to gather just like his. Instead, marveling at how they sacrificed, suffered persecution, and risked imprisonment, he prayed that his church would be just like theirs.

Believers around the world are persecuted for their faith in Christ, some more severely than others. And all believers can be tempted to cower when the stakes of living for Christ are raised. But the Holy Spirit enables us to use our God-given gifts with “power, love and self-discipline” (2 TIMOTHY 1:7). God will help us share the gospel with boldness and compassion, wherever He leads. Because of all He did for us (VV. 9-10), we can embrace the sacrificial cost of commitment to Christ and preserve “sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus” (V. 13).

반항에서 돌아옴

1953년 개봉한 영화 ‘위험한 질주(The Wild One)’에서 말론 브란도는 속으로 반항적인 문제아 기질을 가진, 오토바이 갱단의 두목 조니 스트래블러 역을 맡았습니다. 이 영화 한 장면에서 젊은 여인이 갱 단원의 재킷에 새겨진 이니셜 B.R.M.C.라는 약자의 의미를 묻자, R이 “반항자들(Rebels)”을 의미한다는 것을 듣고 웃으며 드럼을 두드리고 있던 브란도의 팔을 가볍게 잡으며 이렇게 묻습니다. “저기 조니. 무엇에 반항하는 거죠?” 그러자 그는 “무엇이든!”이라고 대답합니다.

이보다 더 우리의 문제를 잘 설명하는 말이 있을까요! 우리는 태어날 때부터 자기 주장을 하려는 본성을 지니고 있습니다. 우리는 주도권을 잡고 싶어 하고, 자기 뜻을 관철하고 싶어 하고, 그것이 통하지 않으면, 수동적으로라도 자기 고집을 부립니다. 반항 자체가 목적이 되는 것입니다.

이스라엘은 왜 어리석게도 “돌과 나무”(예레미야 3:9) 우상을 숭배했을까요? 그리고 왜 이스라엘의 “신실하지 못한 자매 유다”는 하나님에게 돌아오는 척만 했습니까(10절)? 왜냐하면 그것이 “그들의 악한 마음의 완악함”(17절)으로 그들의 독립성을 표현하는 방식이었기 때문입니다. 결국은 이도 반항이었습니다.

그러나 하나님의 사랑은 더 크십니다. 예수님은 반역자들을 위해 죽으셨고, 돌아올 수 있는 문을 열어 두셨습니다. “여호와께서 이르시되 ‘배역한 이스라엘아 돌아오라’ ‘나의 노한 얼굴을 너희에게로 향하지 아니하리라 나는 긍휼이 있는 자라... 너는 오직 네 죄를 자복하라 네 하나님 여호와를 배반한 죄를!’”(12-13절).

우리는 반항하는 자들로 태어났지만, 돌아올 수 있습니다. 이제 아버지께 달려 가서 용서와 사랑, 그리고 도우심을 누립시다.

REBELLION AND RETURN

T he Wild One is a 1953 movie starring Marlon Brando as Johnny Strabler, a troubled, brooding leader of a motorcycle gang. In one scene, a young woman notices a gang member’s jacket with the initials, B.R.M.C. When she learns that the R stands for “rebels,” she laughs and touches the arm of Brando as he idly pats a drum. “Hey, Johnny. What are you rebelling against?” He replies, “What do you got?”

What an apt description of our problem! We’re born with a drive to assert ourselves. We want to be in charge, preferably by getting our way. If that doesn’t work, we’ll assert ourselves by dragging our feet. The rebellion is the point.

Why did Israel foolishly worship idols of “stone and wood” (JEREMIAH 3:9)? And why did Israel’s “unfaithful sister Judah” only pretend to return to God (V. 10)? Because that’s how they expressed their independence—“the stubbornness of their evil hearts” (V. 17). The rebellion was the point.

But God’s love is stronger. Jesus died for rebels and leaves the door open for their return. “ ‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am faithful . . . . Only acknowledge your guilt—you have rebelled against the Lord your God’ ” (VV. 12-13).

We may be born rebels, but we can return. Let’s run home to our Father, where we find His forgiveness, love, and help.

예수님이 주시는 소망

모든 것은 슬픔에 잠긴 한 아버지가 내게 보낸 한 통의 이메일로 시작 되었습니다. 그 분은 대학교 3학년이던 딸 알리사가 교통사고로 세상을 떠난 뒤, 자신의 끔찍한 아픔을 이해하는 누군가로부터 위로를 받고 싶었습니다.

4년 동안 약 300통에 달하는 이메일을 주고받은 후, 크레이그와 나는 마침내 직접 만날 수 있었습니다. 직장 일로 근처 도시에 오게 되면서, 어느 주일 우리는 함께 교회에서 예배를 드리고, 점심을 먹으며 우리 딸들인 멜리사와 알리사에 대한 추억을 나누었습니다. 이 두 소녀는 다른 사람들을 기쁘게 하고 배구를 좋아하며, 예수님을 사랑했고, 아무 잘못도 없이 교통사고로 세상을 떠났습니다.

그날 우리는 우리 딸들이 하나님의 사랑의 품 안에 안전히 있음을 믿었기 때문에, 함께 기도하며 하나님께 감사드리고 헤어졌습니다. 절망적인 상황에서도 예수님의 사랑을 나누면 마음에 위로를 받고 소망을 가질 수 있습니다.

THE HOPE JESUS BRINGS

It began with an email a grieving father sent to me. He had lost his daughter Alyssa—a college junior—in a car accident, and he needed to hear from someone who understood his wrenching pain.

Nearly three hundred emails and four years later, Craig and I were finally able to meet in person. His job had taken him to a nearby city, so on a Sunday we shared a church service, lunch, and memories of our daughters: Melissa and Alyssa—two girls who’d made other people happy, enjoyed volleyball, loved Jesus, and innocently lost their lives in car accidents.

What was the essence of our conversation that day? We discussed our sadness. And we cried. But mostly we spoke of hope. True, authentic hope based on God’s promises. “We do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope,” the apostle Paul explained. “For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and . . . God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him” (1 THESSALONIANS 4:13-14). For the believer, beyond the grave is life—life eternal.

Craig and I ended the day by praying and thanking God that our daughters are secure in His loving arms. The shared love of Jesus binds hearts and gives hope in otherwise hopeless situations.

친구들의 믿음

한 컨퍼런스에 참석한 한 여성이 그날 발표자인 친구가 몸이 안 좋아 보여 그에게 다가갔습니다. 그러자 친구는 “이번 발표를 그대로 할 거야. 혹시 내일 아침까지도 나아지지 않으면 병원에 가보려 해.”라고 말했습니다. 그는 발표자의 이 약속을 잘 기억해 두었습니다. 그리고 자기는 부득이 일찍 떠나야 했기에 다른 친구에게 부탁해 그 발표자를 살펴봐 달라고 했습니다.

아침이 되어 누군가가 그 발표자의 호텔방 문을 두드렸습니다. 두 번째 친구가 그를 병원에 데리고 가려고 온 것입니다. 더 이상 피할 수 없던 상황에서 그 발표자는 다행히 제때에 치료를 받아 생명을 구할 수 있었습니다. 친구들의 끈질긴 관심이 그의 목숨을 구하는데 분명히 도움이 된 것입니다.

마가복음 2장에 나오는 친구들처럼 끈기 있는 친구들은 축복입니다. 그들은 예수님께 치유의 능력이 있다는 것과 예수님이 그들의 마을에 오셨다는 소식을 들었을 것입니다(1절). 사람들이 예수님께 몰려드는 바람에 중풍병자 친구를 예수님께 데려갈 만한 자리가 없었습니다(2절). 하지만 그들은 많은 사람들 때문에 친구가 도움을 받지 못하게 내버려두지 않았습니다. “그들이 그 계신 곳의 지붕을 뜯어 구멍을 내고 중풍병자를... 달아 내리니”(4절) 예수님이 그를 고쳐 주셨습니다(11-12절).

끈기를 가지고 다른 사람의 필요를 위해 예수님께 기도로 간구합시다. 그리고 예수님이 우리의 필요를 공급해 주시는 것처럼 우리도 사람들을 힘써 돕고 사랑합시다.

FAITH OF FRIENDS

Attending a conference, a woman noticed that her friend—the day’s presenter—didn’t look well. She approached the presenter, who replied, “I’m going to get through this presentation. If I don’t feel better in the morning, I’ll go to the doctor.” The woman didn’t forget about the presenter’s promise. This friend had to leave early, but she asked another friend to check on the presenter.

In the morning, there was a knock at the presenter’s hotel door. The second friend had come to drive her to the hospital. There was no backing out, and—fortunately—she was given lifesaving treatments in time. The persistence of friends had evidently helped to save her life.

Persistent friends can be a blessing, just like the men in Mark 2. They’d apparently heard about the healing power of Jesus and that He’d come to their town (V. 1). The people clambered to Christ, and there was “no room left” for the men to get their paralyzed friend to Him (V. 2). They didn’t let a crowd stop them from getting their friend the help he needed, however: “They made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered . . . the man” (V. 4) to Christ who healed him (VV. 11-12).

Let’s bring the needs of others to Jesus through persistent prayer. And as He provides what we need, let’s strive to help and love them well.

하나님 안에서 누리는 참된 만족

삼십 년 전, 참가했던 실직자 워크숍에서 했던 과제가 지금도 기억이 납니다. 동료 실직자들과 내게 각자의 은퇴 연설문을 작성하라는 것이었습니다. 우리는 그때 일자리를 찾고 있었고, 은퇴할 나이는 아직 까마득하게 멀었는데, 은퇴 연설문이라니요? 그러나 진행자는 “여러분의 연설문에는 아마도 일에 관한 이야기는 별로 없을 것”이라는 말로 이 활동의 목적을 설명했습니다. 그녀는 일은 우리의 인생의 중심이 아니며, 직장을 잃어 괴롭긴 하겠지만 우리의 삶은 직업 이상의 의미가 있음을 알려주었습니다.

아브라함 생애의 마지막을 다룬 자세한 성경 말씀은 이 교훈을 떠올리게 합니다. 그는 “나이가 높고 늙어서 기운이 다하여” 죽었고 “오래 만족한 삶”을 살았습니다(창세기 25:8). 성경에서 우리는 아브라함이 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 걸었던 믿음을 읽을 수 있지만, 그의 직업에 대해서는 별로 읽을 수 없습니다. 아브라함이 보인 믿음(15:6)은 전도서 기자가 내린 결론을 떠올리게 합니다. “하나님은 그를 기쁘게 하는 자에게는 지혜와 지식과 희락을 주시니”(2:26). 그는 인생의 의미와, 노동과 수고 가운데서 어떻게 즐거움을 찾을 수 있는지를 고민한 후 이런 말을 했습니다(24-25절).

TRUE SATISFACTION IN GOD

Thirty years ago, I participated in an activity at an unemployment workshop that I still remember today. My fellow laid-off coworkers and I were asked to write our retirement speeches. Huh? We were looking for work and far from retirement age. But the facilitator revealed the purpose of the activity by saying, “Your speech will probably have little to do with your work.” She explained to us that a job really isn’t the center of our lives. And while we may be grieving the loss of a job, our lives mean much more than being employed.

The details about the end of Abraham’s life remind me of this lesson. He died at a “ripe old age” and had lived a “long and satisfying life” (GENESIS 25:8 nlt). Throughout Scripture, we read about Abraham’s faithfulness in following God’s instructions, but we don’t read much about his work. The faith the patriarch displayed (15:6) reminds me of the Teacher’s conclusion in Ecclesiastes: “To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness” (2:26). The Teacher said this after considering the meaning of life and how one can find enjoyment in the midst of work or toil (VV. 24-25).

Even during times of loss and anxiety brought by unemployment, it’s helpful to reflect on Abraham’s example and the Teacher’s words—pointing us to true satisfaction found only in God.

내가 사는 도시에 있는 볼가(Ball St.)에는 ‘그랜드 아이디어스 정원’과 카운티 교도소가 나란히 있습니다. 내 친구 조앤은 두 곳을 모두 사랑했습니다. 정원에 앉아 하나님의 선하심과 하나님께서 자기 삶에 행하신 일들로 갖게 된, 하나님을 향한 자신의 사랑을 묵상하곤 했습니다. 또 교도소에 있는 여성들에게 자신의 삶의 이야기를 나누며, 많은 잘못된 선택과 방황 끝에 하나님께서 자신을 어떻게 구속하셨는지 간증했습니다. 조앤은 종종 제게 말하곤 했습니다. 그곳의 모든 여성들이 하나님의 사랑을 깨닫고, 자신을 위한 하나님의 사랑을 경험하기를 꿈꾼다고 말입니다.

시편 기자는 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님께서 그들을 원수로부터 어떻게 속량하셨는지 “자신들의 이야기를 말하라”고 권했습니다(시편 107:2). 그들은 “광야 사막 길에서 방황하며”, “주리고 목이 말라 그들의 영혼이 그들 안에서 피곤”했습니다(4-5절). 때로는 하나님께 반역하여 징계를 받기도 했습니다(10-12절). 그러나 매번 “그들이 근심 중에 여호와께 부르짖으매 그들의 고통에서 건지셨다”(6절)고 노래합니다. 그들은 하나님께 감사할 많은 이유가 있었고, 다른 이들에게 말할 이야기도 있었습니다. 이스라엘 백성들처럼 우리도 배울 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑은 결코 우리를 놓지 않습니다.

우리 역시 “여호와의 인자하신 행하심”(43절)을 깊이 묵상하고, 하나님께 감사하며, 하나님께서 우리를 어떻게 건지셨는지 각자의 이야기를 전할 수 있습니다.

GOD’S LOVING DEEDS

They sit side by side on Ball Street in my city—the Grand Ideas Garden and the county jail. My friend Joann loved both places. She loved to sit in the garden, thinking about the goodness of God and her love for Him because of what He’d done in her life. She also loved to share with the women in the jail and tell her story of God redeeming her life after many bad choices and wandering far from Him. Often, she would tell me of her passion: her dream that all the women there would someday understand and experience the love of God for them personally.

The psalmist told his fellow Israelites to “tell their story” of how God redeemed them from their enemies (PSALM 107:2). They had “wandered in desert wastelands,” “they were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away” (VV. 4-5). At times they rebelled against God, and He disciplined them (VV. 10-12). Yet every time “they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, . . . he delivered them from their distress” (V. 6). They had much to give God thanks for and to talk about with others. As the Israelites learned, and we can learn also, He has a love that will never let us go.

We too can take opportunities to “ponder the loving deeds of the Lord” toward us (V. 43), give thanks to Him, and tell our own story of His rescue.

그리스도 안에서 하나됨

1967년 1월, 위스콘신주 위너카니 마을은 주의 공식 도로 지도에서 실수로 누락된 사실을 발견했고, 이로 말미암아 마을은 중요한 관광 수입을 잃게 되었습니다. 그래서 마을은 그해 7월 21일을 기해 위스콘신 주에서 독립하여 자체적으로 주가 되기로 결정했습니다. 어떤 이들은 이 분리가 주 정부를 곤란하게 하려는 움직임이었다고 말하고, 또 다른 이들은 농담조의 유머러스한 행동이였다고 말합니다. 어쨌든 몇 달간 협상의 결과로 위너카니 마을이 1967년 7월 22일 위스콘신주에 다시 합류했습니다.

대부분의 분열은 이처럼 유쾌하거나 쉽게 해결되지 않습니다. 분열은 너무나 큰 위협이어서 잠언서는 “이간하는 자”(6:19)를 “여호와께서 미워하시는 것 곧 그의 마음에 싫어하시는 것 예닐곱 가지”(16절) 중 하나로 꼽습니다.

분열은 여러가지 문제를 일으킬 뿐만 아니라 예수님과 아버지 하나님을 세상에 올바로 나타내지 못하게 합니다. 십자가에 달리시기 전날 밤, 그리스도께서는 제자들이 예수님 안에서 하나 되기를 기도합니다. “세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서”(요한복음 17:21).

예수님은 그리스도 안에서 형제자매된 우리의 연합(또는 분열)이 세상의 하나님 아버지에 대한 믿음에 영향을 미친다는 사실을 분명히 말씀하셨습니다! 아마도 이것이 바울이 에베소 사람들에게 “평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라”(에베소서 4:3)고 말한 이유일 것입니다. 성령께서 우리를 하나 되게 하시어 세상이 하나님께 이끌리게 되기를 소망합니다.

ONE IN CHRIST

In January 1967, the town of Winneconne discovered it had been mistakenly omitted from the official Wisconsin state road map, costing the town vital tourist revenue. So the town decided to secede from Wisconsin and become its own sovereign state on July 21 of that year. Some say the secession was a move to embarrass the state government, while others claim it was a tongue-in-cheek act of humor. In any case, months of negotiations resulted in state and town coming together again on July 22, 1967.

Most division isn’t as good-natured or as easily resolved. Division is such a threat that the book of Proverbs lists the “the person who stirs up conflict” (6:19) as one of seven things “that are detestable to [God]” (V. 16).

Division may not only cause problems but misrepresents Jesus and His Father. The night before the cross, Christ prayed that His followers would be one in Him, “that the world may believe that you have sent me” (JOHN 17:21).

Jesus made it clear that our unity as brothers and sisters in Christ (or lack of it) impacts the world’s belief in Him! Perhaps that’s why Paul told the Ephesians, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (EPHESIANS 4:3). May we allow the Spirit of Christ to make us one—that the world may be drawn to Him.

하나님의 선하심

“아니, 이럴 수가!” 벌통을 열었을 때 벌들이 모두 죽은 것을 보고 내가 놀라서 한 말입니다. 그 벌통은 꿀이 가득하고 건강한 벌이 많았습니다. 온화한 겨울 내내 조심스럽게 관리했던 터라 내심 조기 수확을 기대했었습니다. 하지만 따뜻한 날씨 속에 찾아온 갑작스런 한파로 인해 벌떼가 전멸한 것입니다.

인근 양봉 전문가들에게 확인해 보니 “이번에는 많은 양봉농가에서 벌들을 잃었답니다.”라고 확인해 주었습니다. 온화한 겨울은 벌들에게, 심지어 건강한 벌들에게도 어려움을 줍니다. 벌들은 겨울에 벌집 안을 따뜻하게 유지하기 위해 날개로 부채질을 하는데, 날씨가 잠깐 온화해지면 추가로 먹이활동을 하느라 지치게 됩니다. 그러다가 기온이 갑자기 떨어지면 벌들은 벌집을 따뜻하게 할 힘이 없어집니다. 외부환경이 초래한 혼란이 결국 파멸로 이어진 것입니다.

아무리 좋은 일이라도 우리로 하여금 가장 중요한 것을 잊게 한다면 큰 위험이 될 수 있습니다. 모세는 이스라엘 백성들이 이집트를 떠나, 하나님께서 그들에게 주시려는 땅에 들어가기 전에 이 점에 대해 경고했습니다. 그 땅은 “네가 채우지 아니한 아름다운 물건이 가득한 집”(신명기 6:11)이 있을텐데 “네게 배불리 먹게 하실 때에 너는 조심하여... 여호와를 잊지 말라”는 경고였습니다”(11-12절).

우리가 축복을 받을 때 하나님을 기억하는 것은 중요합니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 “온갖 좋은 은사와 온전한 선물”(야고보서 1:17)의 근원이기 때문입니다. 우리가 마음과 뜻과 힘을 다하여 하나님을 사랑함으로써 하나님의 선하심에 겸손히 반응할 때(신명기 6:5), 우리는 하나님 안에서 최고의 축복을 받게 됩니다.

GOD’S GOODNESS

“Oh no!” That was my response upon opening a beehive and discovering the colony had suddenly died. It had been a thriving hive with lots of honey. I’d carefully maintained it throughout a mild winter and anticipated an early harvest. But a cold snap in the warm weather had led to collapse.

I checked with local experts. “Many beekeepers lost hives this time,” they reassured me. Mild winters present challenges for bees, even healthy hives. Bees fan their wings to maintain warmth in the hive in winter, but when the weather warms briefly, they exhaust themselves seeking even more food. If temperatures drop quickly, they don’t have strength to keep warm. Their “distraction” leads to destruction.

Even good things can become dangers when they turn us from what matters most. Moses cautioned God’s people about this after they left Egypt and before they entered the land God was about to give them—a land with “houses filled with all kinds of good things” that they “did not provide” (DEUTERONOMY 6:11). “When you eat and are satisfied,” Moses warned, “be careful that you do not forget the Lord” (VV. 11-12).

Remembering God in our blessings helps us because He is the source of “every good and perfect gift” (JAMES 1:17). When we humbly respond to His goodness by loving Him with heart, soul, and strength (DEUTERONOMY 6:5), we find in Him the best blessing of all.

고난에서 얻는 힘

제스는 꽤 나이가 들어서야 ‘소년과 나비’에 대한 동화를 처음 접했습니다. 그래서 고난을 통해 강건함을 얻는다는 이야기의 교훈을 곧바로 이해할 수 있었습니다. 이야기 속의 소년은 열지 말라는 주의와 함께 나비 고치를 받았습니다. 그러나 고치가 자기 손에서 천천히 뒤틀리고 흔들리자, 소년은 고치를 벗어나려고 애쓰는 나비를 보고 참지 못해 가위로 고치를 갈라 주었습니다.

그러나 번데기에서 풀려난 나비는 날아보지도 못하고 땅에 떨어져 죽습니다. “무슨 일이지?” 소년이 외쳤습니다. 그러나 오랜 세월을 살아온 제스는 이 동화를 즉시 이해했습니다. “나비가 강해지고 날기 위해서는 근육을 단련해야 하지만 소년이 이를 방해했어.”

이 어린이 이야기는 우화일 뿐이지만, 로마에서 박해받던 예수님을 믿는 신자들에게 바울이 가르친 강력한 성경적 진리를 확증합니다. “우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워하나니 이는 환난은 인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다”(로마서 5:3-4).

바울은 고통을 기뻐하거나 그 슬픔을 부인하라고 말하는 것이 아니었습니다. 대신 하나님께서 삶의 어려움을 사용하여 우리의 인격을 만들고, 그 분에 대한 우리의 소망을 키우실 것이라고 확언한 것입니다.

하나님은 그분의 능력 안에서 우리가 하나님의 극복하는 능력을 신뢰하도록 단련하십니다. 나비는 더 강해져서 스스로 날아오를 수 있는 기회를 빼앗겼지만, 우리는 그리스도 안에서의 고난이 우리 인격을 단련하여 우리를 구원자 되시는 하나님께로 이끌어 올려주기에 기뻐할 수 있습니다.

STRENGTH FROM STRUGGLE

Jess was getting on in years when he first heard the children’s folktale about the boy and the butterfly. Right away, he understood the story’s lesson on gaining strength from struggle. In the tale, a boy is given a butterfly cocoon but told not to open it. But as the cocoon slowly twists and shudders in his hand, the boy can’t resist using scissors to split it open so the butterfly inside can escape.

Freed from the struggle, however, the butterfly falls to the ground and dies without ever flying. “What happened?” the boy cries. Jess, after a long life, understood instantly. “The boy prevented the butterfly from using the muscles needed to grow strong and fly.”

The children’s lesson may be a fable, but it affirms the bracing biblical truth taught by Paul to persecuted believers in Jesus in Rome: “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (ROMANS 5:3-4).

Paul wasn’t saying to celebrate pain or deny its heartbreak. He confirmed instead that God will use life’s troubles to build our character, growing our hope in Him.

It’s in His strength that God develops our trust in His overcoming power. The butterfly was cheated from growing stronger to fly. But in Christ, we can rejoice as struggles lift us with character to God our deliverer.
