서로 격려하자

건강이 더 안 좋아지면서 힘들게 또 한 주를 보내고 나서 나는 소파에 털썩 주저앉았습니다. 아무 생각도 하기 싫고 누구와 이야기도 하고 싶지 않았습니다. 기도마저 할 수 없었습니다. 낙담과 회의 가운데 텔레비전을 켰습니다. 광고가 나오는데 한 어린 여자아이가 남동생에게 말하고 있었습니다. 누나가 “너는 챔피언이야”라며 계속 북돋아주자 동생의 미소가 점점 커졌습니다. 나의 미소도 따라서 커졌습니다.

하나님의 백성은 늘 좌절과 회의감으로 고생해왔습니다. 히브리서 기자는 성령을 통해 하나님의 음성을 들을 수 있다고 단언하고 있는 시편 95편 말씀을 인용하며 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 이스라엘 백성들이 광야에서 방황하며 범한 잘못들을 반복하지 말라고 경고했습니다(히브리서 3:7-11). “형제들아 너희는 삼가 혹 너희 중에 누가 믿지 아니하는 악한 마음을 품고 살아 계신 하나님에게서 떨어질까 조심할 것이요... 매일 피차 권면...하라”(12-13절).

그리스도 안에 소망의 생명줄을 가진 우리에게는 능히 견딜 수 있는 힘찬 동력이 있습니다. 바로 성도의 교제를 통해 서로 힘을 얻는 것입니다 (13절). 누군가 회의에 빠지면 다른 믿는 사람들이 확신을 주거나 설명을 해 줄 수 있습니다. 우리 하나님의 백성은 그가 주시는 힘으로 서로를 격려하며 세워줄 수 있습니다.

MUTUAL ENCOURAGEMENT

After another week of being beaten down by more medical setbacks, I slumped onto the sofa. I didn’t want to think about anything. I didn’t want to talk to anybody. I couldn’t even pray. Discouragement and doubt weighed me down as I turned on the television. I began watching a commercial showing a little girl talking to her younger brother. “You’re a champion,” she said. As she continued affirming him, his grin grew. So did mine.

God’s people have always struggled with discouragement and doubt. Quoting Psalm 95, which affirms that God’s voice can be heard through the Holy Spirit, the writer of Hebrews warned believers in Jesus to avoid the mistakes made by the Israelites while wandering in the wilderness (HEBREWS 3:7–11). “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God,” he wrote. “But encourage one another daily” (VV. 12–13).

With our lifeline of hope secured in Christ, we can experience the power-packed fuel we need to persevere: mutual encouragement within the fellowship of believers (V. 13). When one believer doubts, other believers can offer affirmation and accountability. As God strengthens us, His people, we can offer the power of mutual encouragement to one another.

가까운 거리에서 방울뱀을 만난 적이 있습니까? 만약 그렇다면, 뱀과 거리가 가까워질수록 방울 소리가 더 크게 들리는 것처럼 느꼈을지도 모르겠습니다. 과학 학술지 ’현대생물학’에 실린 연구에 의하면 방울뱀은 위협이 가까워질수록 소리를 내는 음량을 ‘증가’시킨다고 합니다. 이 “고주파 모드”는 방울뱀과의 거리가 실제보다 더 가깝다는 착각을 불러일으키는데, 한 연구원이 언급한 것처럼 “거리에 관한 이 오해가... 충분히 안전한 거리를 유지하게 해줍니다.”

사람들은 때때로 서로 갈등이 있을 때 화를 내거나 소리를 지르면서, 상대방을 밀치는 험한 말로 언성을 높이기도 합니다. 이런 상황에 대해 잠언 기자는 “유순한 대답은 분노를 쉬게 하여도 과격한 말은 노를 격동하느니라” (잠언 15:1)고 지혜로운 충고를 줍니다. 그리고 계속해서 “온순”하고 “지혜로운” 말은 “생명나무”이며 “지식”의 원천이 될 수 있다고 말합니다(4, 7절).

예수님은 서로 갈등을 겪고 있는 상대에게 이의를 제기할 때조차도 온유해야 하는 근본적인 이유를 제시해 주셨습니다. 그것은 상대에게 베푸는 사랑으로 우리가 하나님 자녀임을 드러내고(마태복음 5:43–45), 화해를 추구함으로써 “형제를 얻기” 위한 것입니다(18:15). 다툼 가운데 언성을 높이거나 모진 말을 퍼붓기보다, 하나님께서 성령으로 인도하시는 대로 사람들에게 배려와 지혜와 사랑을 보여줄 수 있기를 바랍니다.

WARNING SOUNDS

Ever had a close encounter with a rattlesnake? If so, you might have noticed that the sound of the rattle seemed to get more intense as you moved nearer to the viper. Research in the scientific journal Current Biology reveals that the snakes do increase their rattling rate when a threat is approaching. This “high-frequency mode” can cause us to think they’re closer than they are. As one researcher put it, “The misinterpretation of distance by the listener . . . creates a distance safety margin.”

People can sometimes use increasing volume with harsh words that push others away during a conflict—exhibiting anger and resorting to shouting. The writer of Proverbs shares some wise
advice for times like these: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (PROVERBS 15:1). He goes on to say that “soothing” and “wise” words can be “a tree of life” and a source of “knowledge” (VV. 4, 7).

Jesus provided the ultimate reasons for gently appealing to those with whom we enter into conflict: extending love that reveals us to be His children (MATTHEW 5:43–45) and seeking reconciliation— “[winning] them over” (18:15). Instead of raising our voice or using unkind words during conflicts, may we show civility, wisdom, and love to others as God guides us by His Spirit.

따뜻한 식사 한 끼

치킨 바비큐, 그린 빈, 스파게티, 롤빵. 10월의 어느 시원한 날, 54년의 삶을 자축하는 한 여성이 최소 54명의 노숙자들에게 이 따뜻한 식사를 대접했습니다. 그 여성과 친구들은 레스토랑에서 먹는 평범한 생일 저녁 식사 대신, 시카고 지역 노숙자들에게 자신들이 직접 요리한 음식을 대접하기로 한 것입니다. 그러면서 그녀는 소셜미디어에서 다른 사람들에게 자기들 생일 선물로 노숙자들을 위한 이런 색다른 선행을 해볼 것을 권했습니다.

이 이야기는 마태복음 25장에 있는 예수님의 말씀을 생각나게 해줍니다. “내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 여기 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라”(40절). 예수님은 자신의 양들이 그의 영원한 나라로 초대받아 상속받을 것이라고 선언하신 후에 이 말씀을 하셨습니다(33-34절). 그때에 예수님은 자신을 믿지 않았던 교만한 종교인들과는 달리, 그들이야말로 주님을 향한 참된 믿음 때문에 예수님을 먹이고 입힌 사람들이라는 것을 알아주실 것입니다(26:3-5 참조). 비록 “의로운” 사람들은 자신이 언제 예수님을 먹이고 입혔는지 의아해하겠지만 (25:37), 예수님은 그들이 다른 사람들에게 한 일이 곧 주님에게 한 것이라는 사실을 확인시켜 주실 것입니다(40절).

배고픈 사람들을 먹이는 것은 우리가 하나님의 도움을 받아 하나님의 백성들을 돌보게 하시는 한 가지 방식이며, 그것은 바로 하나님을 향한 우리의 사랑과 하나님과의 관계를 드러내 보여줍니다. 오늘도 하나님의 도우심으로 우리가 다른 사람의 필요를 채워줄 수 있기를 소망합니다.

A HOT MEAL

Barbecue chicken, green beans, spaghetti, rolls. On a cool day in October, at least fifty-four homeless people received this hot meal from a woman celebrating fifty-four years of life. The woman and her friends decided to forgo her usual birthday dinner in a restaurant, choosing instead to cook and serve meals to people on the streets of Chicago. On social media, she encouraged others to also perform a random act of kindness as a birthday gift.

This story reminds me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 25: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (V. 40). He said these words
after declaring that His sheep will be invited into His eternal kingdom to receive their inheritance (VV. 33–34). At that time, Jesus will acknowledge that they’re the people who fed and clothed Him because of their genuine faith in Him, unlike the proud religious people who did not believe in Him (SEE 26:3–5). Although the “righteous” will question when they fed and clothed Jesus (25:37), He’ll assure them that what they did for others was also done for Him (V. 40).

Feeding the hungry is just one way God helps us care for His people—showing our love for Him and relationship with Him. May He help us meet others’ needs today.

나와 함께 동행하시는 하나님

몇 년 전 한 복음 합창단의 합창곡 “예수님이 나와 동행하시네”가 인기 곡 차트에 올랐는데, 이 노래의 가사에는 놀라운 뒷이야기가 있습니다. 그 합창단은 재즈 음악가 커티스 런디가 코카인 중독 치료 프로그램을 받을 때 시작되었습니다. 동료 중독자들을 한데 모으고 오래된 찬송가에서 영감을 얻으면서, 그는 재활 과정에 있는 사람들을 위한 소망의 찬송가로 그 합창곡을 썼습니다. 한 단원은 이 노래를 이렇게 말합니다. “우리는 우리의 삶을 위해 노래를 불렀어요. 예수님께 우리를 구해 달라고, 마약에서 벗어나게 도와 달라고 간구하면서 그 노래를 불렀지요.” 또 다른 단원은 이 노래를 부를 때 마약을 끊으면서 생긴 만성 통증이 가라앉는다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 합창단은 그저 악보에 쓰인 가사를 노래한 것이 아니라 구원을 위한 필사적인 기도를 드렸던 것입니다.

오늘의 본문 성경구절은 그들의 체험을 잘 묘사하고 있습니다. 우리 하나님은 모든 사람에게 구원을 베푸시려고 그리스도 안에 나타나셨습니다 (디도서 2:11). 영원한 생명이 이 선물의 일부이기도 하지만(13절), 하나님은 지금도 우리를 위해 일하시면서 우리가 자제력을 회복하고, 세속적인 정욕을 거부하고, 그분과 함께 구속된 삶을 살도록 능력을 주십니다(12, 14절). 합창단원들이 알게 된 것처럼, 예수님은 우리의 죄를 용서하실 뿐만 아니라 우리를 파괴적인 생활습관에서도 자유롭게 하십니다.

WALK WITH ME

A few years ago, a popular song hit the charts, with a gospel choir singing the chorus, “Jesus walks with me.” Behind the lyrics lies a powerful story.

The choir was started by jazz musician Curtis Lundy when he entered a treatment program for cocaine addiction. Drawing fellow addicts together and finding inspiration in an old hymnal, he wrote that chorus as a hymn of hope for those in rehab. “We were singing for our lives,” one choir member says of the song. “We were asking Jesus to save us, to help us get out of the drugs.” Another found that her chronic pain subsided when she sang the song. That choir wasn’t just singing words on a sheet but offering desperate prayers for redemption.

Today’s Scripture reading describes their experience well. In Christ, our God has appeared to offer salvation to all people (TITUS 2:11). While eternal life is part of this gift (V. 13), God is working on us now, empowering us to regain self-control, say no to worldly passions, and redeem us for life with Him (VV. 12, 14). As the choir members found, Jesus doesn’t just forgive our sins—He frees us from destructive lifestyles.

Jesus walks with me. And you. And anyone who cries out to Him for help. He’s with us, offering hope for the future and salvation now.

너무나 아름다운

나는 아주 어렸을 때 병원 신생아실 창문 밖에서 처음으로 갓난아기를 보았습니다. 그때 신생아에 대해 아는 것이 전혀 없어서, 아주 작고 머리털 하나 없이 주름진 원뿔 모양의 아기 머리를 보고는 너무 놀랐습니다. 하지만 가까이 서 있던 아기 엄마는 모두에게 “우리 아기 정말 예쁘죠?”라고 몇번이나 말했습니다. 훗날 나는 어느 젊은 아빠가 갓난 딸아이에게 “너는 너무 아름다워”라고 다정하게 노래 불러주는 영상을 보면서 그 때 그 순간이 떠올랐습니다. 사실 너무 기뻐 어쩔 줄 몰라하는 아빠에게 그 어린 딸은 모든 창조물 중에서 가장 아름다운 존재였습니다.

하나님도 우리를 그렇게 바라보시지 않을까요? 에베소서 2장 10 절에서는 우리를 하나님이 “직접 만드신” 걸작품이라고 말하고 있습니다. 우리는 자신의 부족함을 잘 알기에 하나님이 우리를 얼마나 많이 사랑하시는지 받아들이기 힘들고, 또 우리가 하나님께 아주 귀한 존재라는 사실을 믿기 어려울 지도 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 사랑받을 만한 자격이 있어서 우리를 사랑하시는 것이 아니라(3-4절) 그분 자신이 사랑이시기 때문에 우리를 사랑하십니다(요한 1서 4:8). 하나님의 사랑은 그분의 여러 은혜 중의 하나입니다. 하나님은 우리가 죄로 말미암아 죽어 있을 때 예수님의 희생을 통해 그분 안에서 우리를 살리심으로 그 사랑의 깊이를 보여주셨습니다(에베소서 2:5, 8).

하나님의 사랑은 변덕스럽지 않고 한결같습니다. 그분은 불완전하고 망가진 사람들, 약하고 엉망인 사람들을 사랑하시며, 우리가 넘어질 때에도 하나님은 거기 계셔서 우리를 일으켜 주십니다. 우리는 하나님의 보화이며 그분께 너무나 아름다운 존재입니다.

SO BEAUTIFUL

I was very young when I peered through a hospital nursery window and saw a newborn for the first time. In my ignorance, I was dismayed to see a tiny, wrinkly child with a hairless, cone-shaped head. The baby’s mother standing near us, however, couldn’t stop asking everyone, “Isn’t he gorgeous?” I was reminded of that moment when I saw a video of a young dad tenderly singing the song, “You Are So Beautiful” to his baby girl. To her enraptured daddy, the little girl was the most beautiful thing ever created.

Is that how God looks at us? Ephesians 2:10 says that we’re His “handiwork”—His masterpiece. Aware of our own failings, it may be hard for us to accept how much He loves us or to believe that we could ever be of value to Him. But God doesn’t love us because we deserve love (VV. 3–4); He loves us because He is love (1 JOHN 4:8). His love is one of grace, and He showed the depth of it when, through Jesus’ sacrifice, He made us alive in Him when we were dead in our sins (EPHESIANS 2:5, 8).

God’s love isn’t fickle. It’s constant. He loves the imperfect, the broken, those who are weak and those who mess up. When we fall, He’s there to lift us up. We’re His treasure, and we’re so beautiful to Him.

축복받은 회개

“파산(BROKE)”이라는 뜻의 이 단어는 그래디에게 붙여진 별명 이었는데, 그 글자는 그의 자동차 번호판에 자랑스럽게 새겨져 있었습니다. 의도적으로 영적 의미를 부여한 것은 아니지만, 그것은 도박꾼에, 간통범에, 사기꾼인 이 중년 남자에게 딱 맞는 별명이었습니다. 그는 망가지고 파산했으며, 하나님과는 거리가 먼 사람이었습니다. 그러나 어느 날 밤 호텔방에서 성령님이 그의 죄를 지적하시자 모든 것이 바뀌었습니다. 그는 아내에게 “내가 구원받고 있는 것 같아!”라고 말했습니다. 그날 밤 그는 무덤까지 가지고 가리라고 생각하고 숨겨왔던 죄들을 다 고백하고 예수님께 나아가 용서를 구했습니다. 스스로 마흔 살도 채 살지 못할 거라고 생각했던 그 사람은 그후 30년 동안 변화 받은 신자로서 하나님을 섬기며 살았습니다. 그의 자동차 번호판도 “파산”에서 “회개(REPENT)”로 바뀌었습니다.

BLESSED REPENTANCE

“BROKE” was the street name Grady answered to and those five letters were proudly emblazoned on his license plates. Though not intended in a spiritual sense, the moniker fit the middle-aged gambler, adulterer, and deceiver. He was broken, bankrupt, and far from God. However, all that changed one evening when he was convicted by God’s Spirit in a hotel room. He told his wife, “I think I’m getting saved!” That evening he confessed sins he thought he’d take with him to the grave and came to Jesus for forgiveness. For the next thirty years, the man who didn’t think he’d live to see forty lived and served God as a changed believer in Jesus. His license plates changed too—from “BROKE” to “REPENT.”

Repent. That’s what Grady did and that’s what God called Israel to do in Hosea 14:1–2. “Return, Israel, to the Lord your God. . . . Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him: ‘Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously.’ ” Big or small, few or many, our sins separate us from God. But the gap can be closed by turning from sin to God and receiving the forgiveness He’s graciously provided through the death of Jesus. Whether you’re a struggling believer in Christ or one whose life looks like Grady’s did, your forgiveness is only a prayer away.

참아내는 소망

네 살 된 솔로몬은 진행성 근육퇴화 질환인 뒤셴형 근위축증 진단을 받았습니다. 1년 후 의사들은 솔로몬이 휠체어 사용하는 문제를 그의 부모와 의논했습니다. 그러나 솔로몬은 휠체어를 타지 않겠다고 고집했습니다. 가족과 가족의 친구들은 솔로몬을 위해 기도하며, 가능한 오래도록 휠체어를 이용하지 않아도 되도록 전문적으로 훈련받은 안내견을 구하는 기금을 모금했습니다. 지금 나의 안내견 콜리를 훈련시킨 “테일즈 포 라이프”라는 안내견 훈련소에서 솔로몬을 도와줄 안내견 와플즈를 준비시키고 있습니다.

솔로몬은 치료를 잘 받고 있는데, 가끔 고통을 잊으려고 소리지르면서 하나님을 찬양합니다. 어떤 날은 더 힘들어 합니다. 그 힘들었던 어느 날, 솔로몬은 어머니를 껴안고 말했습니다. “천국에는 이런 병이 없어서 너무 좋아요.”

병의 증세가 악화되면 영원의 이쪽 편 세상에 사는 사람들은 누구나 다 영향을 받습니다. 그러나 솔로몬과 같이 우리에게도 참아내는 소망이 있어서 불가피한 괴로운 나날을 견디려는 결심을 견고히 해줍니다. 하나님은 우리에게 “새 하늘과 새 땅”(요한계시록 21:1)을 약속해 주십니다. 우리를 창조하시고 삶을 영위하게 하시는 하나님의 장막이 우리와 함께 있어, 하나님이 우리 가운데 “계시며”(3절) 우리의 눈에서 “모든 눈물을 닦아주실” 것입니다. 그리고 “다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니할”(4절) 것입니다. 기다림이 “너무 힘들거나” “너무 길다고” 느껴져도, 하나님의 약속은 이루어질 것이기에 우리는 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다.

ENDURING HOPE

Doctors diagnosed four-year-old Solomon with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive muscle-degenerating disease. A year later, doctors discussed wheelchairs with the family. But Solomon protested that he didn’t want to have to use one. Family and friends prayed for him and raised funds for a professionally trained service dog to help keep him out of that wheelchair for as long as possible. Tails for Life, the organization that trained my service dog, Callie, is currently preparing Waffles to serve Solomon.

Though Solomon accepts his treatment, often bursting out in song to praise God, some days are harder. On one of those difficult days, Solomon hugged his mom and said, “I’m happy there’s no Duchenne’s in heaven.”

The degenerating effects of sickness affect all people on this side of eternity. Like Solomon, however, we have an enduring hope that can strengthen our resolve on those inevitable tough days. God gives us the promise of “a new heaven and a new earth” (REVELATION 21:1). Our Creator and Sustainer will “dwell” among us by making His home with us (V. 3). He will “wipe every tear” from our eyes. “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (V. 4). When the wait feels “too hard” or “too long,” we can experience peace because God’s promise will be fulfilled.

소망과 소원

내가 영국으로 이사 갔을 때, 미국의 추수감사절 날은 그저 평범한 11월의 한 목요일에 지나지 않았습니다. 그 주 주말에 파티를 열었지만, 그날은 가족과 친구들과 함께 있고 싶었습니다. 그런데, 이런 소원은 나에게만 있는 것이 아니라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 우리는 모두 특별한 날이나 명절에 소중한 사람들과 함께 있고 싶어 합니다. 그리고 그날을 기념하고 있을 때에도 우리와 함께하지 못한 사람을 그리워하고, 흩어진 가족이 잘 지내기를 위해 기도합니다.

이 추수감사절 기간 동안 기도하면서 성경의 지혜를 묵상하니 도움이 되었습니다. 그중에 솔로몬 왕의 이런 잠언이 있었습니다. “소망이 더디 이루어지면 그것이 마음을 상하게 하거니와 소원이 이루어지는 것은 곧 생명나무니라”(잠언 13:12). 솔로몬의 지혜를 담은 간결한 격언 중의 하나인 이 잠언에서 그는 “소망이 더디 이루어지면” 미칠 수 있는 영향에 대해 언급하면서, 간절히 바라는 어떤 소원이 더디 이루어지면 불안과 고통이 따를 수 있다고 이야기합니다. 그러나 우리가 바라는 소원이 이루어지면 생명나무와도 같이 우리의 기분을 상쾌하고 새롭게 해줍니다.

우리의 어떤 소망과 바라는 소원은 바로 이루어지지 않을 수도 있고, 또 어떤 것은 우리가 죽은 후에 하나님을 통해 이루어질 수도 있습니다. 우리의 소원이 무엇이든, 우리는 하나님이 우리를 끊임없이 사랑하신다는 것을 알기 때문에 그분을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 그리고 언젠가 우리는 사랑하는 사람들을 다시 만나 하나님과 함께 잔치하며 그분께 감사하는 날을 맞게 될 것입니다 (요한계시록 19:6-9 참조).

HOPES AND LONGINGS

When I moved to England, the American holiday of Thanksgiving became just another Thursday in November. Although I created a feast the weekend after, I longed to be with family and friends on the day. Yet I understood that my longings weren’t unique to me. We all yearn to be with people dear to us on special occasions and holidays. And even when we’re celebrating, we may miss someone who’s not with us or we may pray for our fractured family to be at peace.

During these times, praying and pondering the wisdom of the Bible has helped me, including one of King Solomon’s proverbs: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life” (PROVERBS 13:12). In this proverb, one of the pithy sayings through which Solomon shared his wisdom, he notes the effect that “hope deferred” can have: the delay of something much longed for can result in angst and pain. But when the desire is fulfilled, it’s like a tree of life—something that allows us to feel refreshed and renewed.

Some of our hopes and desires might not be fulfilled right away, and some might only be met through God after we die. Whatever our longing, we can trust in Him, knowing He loves us unceasingly. And, one day, we’ll be reunited with loved ones as we feast with Him and give thanks to Him (SEE REVELATION 19:6–9).

우리의 미래를 하나님께 맡기자

2010년에 레즐로 하니츠는 비트코인(당시 1센트도 안 되는 가치의 가상화폐)으로 처음 물건을 샀는데, 피자 두 판(25달러)에 10,000 비트코인을 지불했습니다. 그가 지불했던 비트코인의 가치는 2021 년 연중 최고 시세 기준으로 5억 달러 이상이었습니다. 가치가 급등하기 전까지 그는 계속 코인으로 피자 값을 지불하여 총 100,000 비트코인을 써버렸습니다. 그 비트코인을 쓰지 않고 계속 가지고 있었다면 그는 680억 달러 이상의 재산을 갖게 되어 포브스 잡지의 “세계 부호 목록”에 올랐을 것입니다. 앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 미리 알았더라면 말입니다.

물론 하니츠는 그렇게 될 줄 몰랐고, 우리 모두 다 마찬가지입니다. 사람들은 미래를 미리 알아서 인생을 유리하게 조정하려고 해보지만, 전도서는 “앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 아는 사람은 아무도 없다”(10:14, 현대인의 성경) 는 진실을 일깨워줍니다. 어떤 사람들은 자신이 아는 것보다 더 많이 안다고 잘못 생각하거나, 더 심한 경우 다른 사람의 삶이나 미래에 대해서 남다른 통찰력을 갖고 있다고 스스로 착각합니다. 그러나 전도서는 “나중에 일어날 일을 누가 그에게 알리리요”(14절)라고 날카롭게 질문합니다. 그럴 수 있는 사람은 ‘아무도 없습니다.’

성경은 지혜로운 사람과 어리석은 사람을 대조하고 있는데, 이 둘을 구분하는 많은 것 중의 하나가 미래에 대한 겸손한 자세입니다(잠언 27:1). 현명한 사람은 결정을 내릴 때 하나님만이 미래에 일어날 일을 진실로 아신다는 사실을 인정하지만, 어리석은 사람들은 자신이 모르는 지식을 안다고 생각합니다. 우리에게 지혜가 있어서, 우리의 미래를 실제로 알고 계시는 유일하신 그분께 우리의 미래를 맡길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

TRUSTING OUR FUTURE TO GOD

In 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made the first purchase with bitcoin (a digital currency then worth a fraction of a penny each), paying 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas ($25). In 2021, at its highest value during the year, those bitcoins would have been worth well more than $500 million. Back before the value skyrocketed, he kept paying for pizzas with coins, spending 100,000 bitcoins total. If he’d kept those bitcoins, their value would’ve made him a billionaire sixty-eight times over and placed him on the Forbes’ “richest people in the world” list. If only he’d known what was coming.

Of course, Hanyecz couldn’t possibly have known. None of us could have. Despite our attempts to comprehend and control the future, Ecclesiastes rings true: “No one knows what is coming”
(10:14). Some of us delude ourselves into thinking we know more than we do, or worse, that we possess some special insight about another person’s life or future. But as Ecclesiastes pointedly asks: “who can tell someone else what will happen after them?” (V. 14). No one.

Scripture contrasts a wise and a foolish person, and one of the many distinctions between the two is humility about the future (PROVERBS 27:1). A wise person recognizes that only God truly knows what’s over the horizon as they make decisions. But foolish people presume knowledge that isn’t theirs. May we have wisdom, trusting our future to the only One who actually knows it.

행함이 있는 믿음

2021년 6월의 어느 날 저녁, 토네이도가 한 지역을 강타하여 어느 집 곳간이 파손되었습니다. 1800년대 후반부터 그 집에 있었던 그 곳간이 입은 손실은 참으로 안타까웠습니다. 존과 바브는 다음 날 아침 교회로 가다가 그 피해를 보고 어떻게 도울 수 있을까 생각했습니다. 일단 차를 세우고 보니 그 집 식구들이 곳간을 치우는데 일손이 필요하다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들은 바로 차를 돌려 자기네 집으로 가서 옷을 갈아입고 돌아와 강풍에 쑥대밭이 된 그 곳간을 하루 종일 정리했습니다. 그들은 그 집 일을 봉사하면서 믿음을 행동으로 옮긴 것입니다.

야고보는 “행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것”(야고보서 2:26)이라고 말하면서, 어디로 가는지도 모르면서 하나님을 순종하며 따랐던 아브라함을 예로 듭니다 (23절; 창세기 12:1-4; 15:6; 히브리서 11:8 참조). 또 여리고 성을 정탐하러 왔던 정탐꾼을 숨겨주어 이스라엘의 하나님에 대한 믿음을 보여주었던 라합도 언급합니다(야고보서 2:25; 여호수아 2; 6:17 참조).

“사람이 믿음이 있노라 하고 행함이 없으면”(야고보서 2:14) 자신들에게 유익이 되지 않습니다. 매튜 헨리는 이렇게 주석합니다. “믿음은 뿌리이고 선행은 그 열매이다. 우리는 이 두 가지를 모두 가지고 있는지 살펴보아야 한다.” 하나님에게 우리의 선행이 필요한 것은 아니지만, 우리의 믿음은 우리의 행위로 증명됩니다.

FAITH IN ACTION

A tornado blew through a community on a June evening in 2021, destroying a family’s barn. It was a sad loss because the barn had been on the family property since the late 1800s. As John and Barb drove by on their way to church the next morning, they saw the damage and wondered how they might help. So they stopped and learned that the family needed assistance with cleanup. Turning their car around quickly, they headed back home to change clothes and returned to stay for the day to clean up the mess the violent winds had created. They put their faith into action as they served the family.

James said that “faith without deeds is dead” (JAMES 2:26). He gives the example of Abraham, who in obedience followed God when he didn’t know where he was going (V. 23; SEE GENESIS 12:1–4; 15:6; HEBREWS 11:8). James also mentions Rahab, who showed her belief in the God of Israel when she hid the spies who came to check out the city of Jericho (JAMES 2:25; SEE JOSHUA 2; 6:17).

“If someone claims to have faith but has no deeds” (JAMES 2:14), it does them no good. “Faith is the root, good works are the fruits,” comments Matthew Henry, “and we must see to it that we have both.” God doesn’t need our good deeds, but our faith is proven by our actions.
