군중

철학자이자 작가인 한나 아렌트(1906-1975)는 이렇게 말했습니다. “사람들은 강력한 군주들에게 저항하고 그들 앞에 절하기를 거부해왔다. 그러나 군중에게 저항하고 오도된 대중 앞에 홀로 서서, 그들의 무자비한 광란에 무기도 없이 맞섰던 사람은 진실로 거의 없었다.” 독일에서 태어난 유대인 아렌트는 이런 일을 직접 목격하기도 했습니다. 집단으로부터 배척당하는 것은 확실히 두려운 일입니다.

바울 사도도 그러한 배척을 경험했습니다. 바리새인과 랍비로 훈련받아 온 그의 삶은 부활하신 예수님을 만났을 때 완전히 뒤집어졌습니다. 이 사건은 바울이 그리스도를 믿는 자들을 박해하기 위해 다메섹으로 가던 길에 일어났습니다(사도행전 9). 개종한 후, 바울 사도는 같은 민족으로부터 배척받았음을 알았습니다. 그의 편지 고린도후서에서 바울은 “매 맞음”과 “갇힘”(6:5)과 같이 동족들로부터 그가 당했던 고난을 되새기고 있습니다.

바울은 유대인들의 자신에 대한 배척에 분노나 원망으로 대하기보다 그들도 예수님을 알게 되기를 간절히 바랐습니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “나에게는 큰 슬픔과 그치지 않는 마음의 고통이 있습니다. 만일 내 동족이 구원만 얻는다면 내가 저주를 받아 그리스도에게서 떨어져 나가는 한이 있더라도 나는 그렇게 되기를 바라고 있습니다”(로마서 9:2-3, 현대인의 성경).

하나님께서 우리를 주님의 가족으로 맞이하셨듯이, 하나님께서 우리의 원수까지도 우리가 하나님과의 교제에 초대할 수 있도록 도와 주시길 바랍니다.

THE CROWD

“Men have been found to resist the most powerful monarchs and to refuse to bow down before them,” observed philosopher and author Hannah Arendt (1906–75). She added, “[B]ut few indeed have been found to resist the crowd, to stand up alone before misguided masses, to face their implacable frenzy without weapons.” As a Jew, Arendt witnessed this firsthand in her native Germany. There’s something terrifying about being rejected by the group.

The apostle Paul experienced such rejection. Trained as a Pharisee and rabbi, his life was turned upside down when he encountered the resurrected Jesus. Paul had been traveling to Damascus to persecute those who believed in Christ (ACTS 9). After his conversion, the apostle found himself rejected by his own people. In his letter we know as 2 Corinthians, Paul reviewed some of the troubles he faced at their hands, among them “beatings” and “imprisonments” (6:5).

Rather than responding to such rejection with anger or bitterness, Paul longed for them to come to know Jesus too. He wrote, “I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people” (ROMANS 9:2–3).

As God has welcomed us into His family, may He also enable us to invite even our adversaries into relationship with Him.

폴 하비는 60년 넘게 미국에서 라디오 뉴스를 담당해온 친숙한 목소리의 진행자였습니다. 그는 화려한 말솜씨로 “여러분, 이제 무슨 뉴스인지 아시겠지요. 이제 곧 ‘이야기의 결말’을 듣게 되실 겁니다.”라고 말하곤 했습니다. 짧은 광고 후에 그는 유명인사에 대해 잘 알려지지 않은 이야기를 들려주곤 했는데, 그 사람의 이름이나 핵심 부분은 끝에 가서야 말하면서, 다음과 같이 극적으로 말을 끊었다가 그 특유의 구절로 마무리하면서 청취자들을 즐겁게 해주었습니다. “자, 여러분은 이 이야기의 결말을... 다 알 수 있게 되었지요.”

요한 사도가 본 과거와 미래에 대한 환상도 이와 비슷한 약속을 주면서 전개됩니다. 하지만 그의 이야기는 슬픈 어조로 시작합니다. 하늘과 땅에서 창조된 어떤 존재도 역사가 어디로 흘러가고 있는지 설명할 수 없는 것을 보고 요한 사도는 울음을 멈출 수가 없었습니다(요한계시록 4:1; 5:1-4). 그러다가 “유다 지파의 사자”에게 희망이 있다는 목소리가 들립니다(5절). 그러나 요한이 살펴보았을 때, 최후 승리를 거둔 사자는 보이지 않고, 대신 일찍이 죽임을 당한 것처럼 보이는 어린 양이 보였습니다(5-6절). 그리고는 갑자기 하나님의 보좌로 찬양의 물결이 밀려오는 믿을 수 없는 광경이 벌어집니다. 세 무리로 늘어난 합창단에, 수많은 천사들과 하늘과 땅의 모든 피조물들이 24명의 장로들과 연합하여 찬송합니다(8-14절).

십자가에 못 박힌 구세주가 모든 피조물의 희망이며 하나님의 영광이고 우리 이야기의 결말이라는 것을 그 누가 상상할 수 있었겠습니까?

THE REST OF OUR STORY

For more than six decades, news journalist Paul Harvey was a familiar voice on American radio. He would say with a colorful flair, “You know what the news is, in a minute you’re going to hear the rest of the story.” After a brief advertisement, he would tell a little-known story of a well-known person. But by withholding until the end either the person’s name or some other key element, he delighted listeners with his dramatic pause and tagline: “And now you know . . . the rest of the story.”

The apostle John’s vision of things past and future unfolds with a similar promise. However, his story begins on a sad note. He couldn’t stop crying when he saw that no created being in heaven or on earth could explain where history is going (REVELATION 4:1; 5:1–4). Then he heard a voice offering hope in the “Lion of the tribe of Judah” (V. 5). But when John looked, instead of seeing a conquering lion, he saw a lamb looking like it had been slaughtered (VV. 5–6). The unlikely sight erupted in waves of celebration around the throne of God. In three expanding choruses, twenty-four elders were joined by countless angels and then by all of heaven and earth (VV. 8–14).

Who could have imagined that a crucified Savior would be the hope of all creation, the glory of our God, and the rest of our story.

타헤르와 그의 아내 도냐가 예수님을 믿게 되었을 때, 그들은 고국에서 박해를 당할 위험이 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 정말로 어느 날, 타헤르는 눈이 가리어지고 수갑이 채워져 투옥되었으며 배교 혐의로 기소되었습니다. 그가 재판에 출석하기 전에, 그와 도냐는 예수님을 배반하지 않겠다고 다짐했습니다.

오늘날 많은 신자들이 예수님을 따르는 것 때문에 고난을 받고, 때로는 죽임을 당하기도 합니다. 우리가 박해를 당할 때 하나님은 우리가 상상조차 할 수 없는 방법으로 일하신다는 것을 깨닫는다면 우리의 신앙은 더 깊어집니다. 우리가 어떤 전투에 마주하든, 하나님이 함께 하신다는 것을 기억하십시오.

OUT OF THE LIONS’ DEN

When Taher and his wife, Donya, became believers in Jesus, they knew they risked persecution in their home country. Indeed, one day Taher was blindfolded, handcuffed, imprisoned, and charged with apostasy. Before he appeared at trial, he and Donya agreed that they wouldn’t betray Jesus.

What happened at the sentencing amazed him. The judge said, “I don’t know why, but I want to take you out of the whale’s and lion’s mouths.” Then Taher “knew that God was acting”; he couldn’t otherwise explain the judge referencing two passages in the Bible (SEE JONAH 2, DANIEL 6). Taher was released from prison and the family later found exile elsewhere.

Taher’s surprising release echoes the story of Daniel. A skilled administrator, he was going to be promoted, which made his colleagues jealous (DANIEL 6:3–5). Plotting his downfall, they convinced King Darius to pass a law against praying to anyone other than the king—which Daniel ignored. King Darius had no choice but to throw him to the lions (V. 16). But God “rescued Daniel” and saved him from death (V. 27), even as He saved Taher through the judge’s surprising release.

Many believers today suffer for following Jesus, and sometimes they even are killed. When we face persecution, we can deepen our faith when we understand that God has ways we can’t even imagine. Know that He’s with you in whatever battles you face.

구원의 하나님

나는 설교 중 예를 들기 위해 강단에 놓여있는 한 화가의 아름다운 그림으로 가서 그림 중앙에 검은 줄을 주욱 그었습니다. 회중은 너무 놀라 숨을 제대로 쉬지도 못했습니다. 그런데 그 그림을 그린 화가는 옆에 서서 내가 자기 작품을 훼손시키는 것을 그냥 지켜보았습니다. 그런 다음, 새 붓을 골라 망쳐진 그림을 절묘한 예술 작품으로 다시 바꾸어 놓았습니다.

그 화가의 복구 작업은 엉망으로 산 우리의 삶에 하나님이 하실 수 있는 일을 연상시켜 줍니다. 이사야 선지자는 영적으로 보지 못하고 듣지 못한다고 이스라엘 백성들을 꾸짖었지만(이사야 42:18-19), 곧 “너는 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 구속하였다”(43:1)라고 하며 그들을 향한 하나님의 구원과 속량의 소망을 선포했습니다. 하나님은 우리를 위해서도 똑같이 하실 수 있습니다. 우리가 죄를 지은 이후라도, 우리가 죄를 자백하고 하나님께로 돌이키면 하나님은 우리를 용서하시고 회복시켜 주십니다(5-7절; 요한1서 1:9 참조). 우리 자신은 망가진 삶을 아름다움으로 바꿀 수 없지만 예수님은 하실 수 있습니다. 복음의 좋은 소식은 주님이 그분의 보혈로 우리를 구속하셨다는 것입니다. 요한계시록은 마지막 때에 그리스도가 우리의 눈물을 닦아 주시고 우리의 과거를 속량하시며 만물을 새롭게 하실 것을 약속하고 있습니다(요한계시록 21:4-5).

우리는 우리 인생에 대한 제한적인 시야를 가지고 있지만, 우리를 “지명하여”(이사야 43:1) 부르신 하나님은 우리가 상상하는 것보다 훨씬 아름답게 우리 인생을 만드실 것입니다. 당신이 예수님을 믿는 믿음으로 구원받았다면, 당신의 삶의 이야기는 그 그림처럼 영화로운 결말로 끝날 것입니다.

THE GOD WHO REDEEMS

As part of a sermon illustration, I walked toward the beautiful painting an artist had been creating on the platform and made a dark streak across the middle of it. The congregation gasped
in horror. The artist simply stood by and watched as I defaced what she’d created. Then, selecting a new brush, she lovingly transformed the ruined painting into an exquisite work of art.

Her restorative work reminds me of the work God can perform in our lives when we’ve made a mess of them. The prophet Isaiah rebuked the people of Israel for their spiritual blindness and deafness (ISAIAH 42:18–19), but then he proclaimed the hope of God’s deliverance and redemption: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you” (43:1). He can do the same for us. Even after we’ve sinned, if we confess our sins and turn to God, He forgives and restores us (VV. 5–7; SEE 1 JOHN 1:9). We can’t bring beauty out of the mess, but Jesus can. The good news of the gospel is that He has redeemed us by His blood. The book of Revelation assures us that in the end, Christ will dry our tears, redeem our past, and make all things new (REVELATION 21:4–5).

We have a limited vision of our story. But God who knows us “by name” (ISAIAH 43:1) will make our lives more beautiful than we could ever imagine. If you’ve been redeemed by faith in Jesus, your story, like the painting, has a glorious ending.

올바른 예수님

독서 동아리의 리더가 토론할 책을 요약해서 이야기하자 떠들썩했던 방의 분위기가 조용해졌습니다. 내 친구 조앤은 경청했지만 내용을 알아듣지 못했습니다. 알고 보니, 그 친구는 다른 사람들이 읽은 소설과 비슷한 제목의 논픽션 책을 읽었던 것이었습니다. 조앤은 그 “틀린” 책을 재미있게 읽었지만, 친구들이 “올바른” 소설책에 관한 토론에 참여할 수 없었습니다.

바울 사도는 예수님을 믿는 고린도 성도들이 “틀린” 예수님을 믿기를 원치 않았습니다. 바울은 거짓 선생들이 교회에 침투해서 다른 “예수님”을 전파했고, 성도들은 그 거짓을 아무렇지 않게 받아들였다고 지적 했습니다(고린도후서 11:3-4).

바울은 이들 가짜 선생들의 이단 교리를 비판했습니다. 하지만 고린도 교회에 보내는 첫 편지에서 바울은 성경 말씀에 나오는 예수님에 관한 진리를 한번 더 설명했습니다. 이 예수님은 “우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고... 사흘 만에 다시 살아나사... 열두 제자에게 [나타나시고]” 마침내 바울 자신에게도 보이신 메시아이셨습니다(고린도전서 15:3-8). 예수님은 동정녀 마리아를 통해 이 땅에 오시고, 임마누엘(우리와 함께 하시는 하나님)이라고 불리심으로 그분의 신성을 확인해 주셨습니다(마태복음 1:20-23).

THE RIGHT JESUS

The buzz in the room faded to a comfortable silence as the book club leader summarized the novel the group would discuss. My friend Joan listened closely but didn’t recognize the plot. Finally, she realized she had read a nonfiction book with a similar title to the work of fiction the others had read. Although she enjoyed reading the “wrong” book, she couldn’t join her friends as they discussed the “right” book.

The apostle Paul didn’t want the Corinthian believers in Jesus to believe in a “wrong” Jesus. He pointed out that false teachers had infiltrated the church and presented a different “Jesus” to them, and they had swallowed the lies (2 CORINTHIANS 11:3–4).

Paul denounced the heresy of these phony teachers. In his first letter to the church, however, he’d reviewed the truth about the Jesus of Scripture. This Jesus was the Messiah who “died for our sins . . . was raised on the third day . . . and then [appeared] to the Twelve,” and finally to Paul himself (1 CORINTHIANS 15:3–8). This Jesus had come to earth through a virgin named Mary and was named Immanuel (God with us) to affirm His divine nature (MATTHEW 1:20–23).

Does this sound like the Jesus you know? Understanding and accepting the truth written in the Bible about Him assures us that we’re on the spiritual path that leads to heaven.

넉넉히 이기는 자

남편이 아들의 유소년 야구 팀을 지도하던 때에, 선수들에게 연말 파티를 베풀어 주고 시즌 동안 선수들의 기량이 향상한 것을 칭찬해 주었습니다. 가장 어린 선수 중 한 명인 더스틴이 파티 중 나에게 와서 말했습니다. “우리가 오늘 경기에 지지 않았어요?”

“맞아, 우리가 졌어. 하지만 최선을 다한 네가 자랑스러워.”라고 말했습니다.

“알아요. 그래도 우리가 졌지요, 그렇죠?” 이렇게 되물었습니다. 나는 고개를 그렇다고 끄덕였습니다.

더스틴이 물었습니다. “그런데 왜 내가 이긴 것처럼 느껴지죠?”

나는 웃으면서 대답했습니다. “그건 네가 승자이기 때문이야.”

더스틴은 경기에서 지는 것은 최선을 다했음에도 불구하고 실패라고 생각했었습니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리에게 싸움은 운동 경기장에만 국한되지 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 인생의 힘든 시간이 마치 우리의 가치를 반영하는 것으로 여기려고 할 때가 종종 있습니다.

바울 사도는 현재의 고난과 하나님 자녀로서 누릴 미래의 영광 사이의 연관성을 보증해 주었습니다. 우리를 위해 자신을 내어주신 예수님은 우리가 죄와 싸우는 동안 계속해서 우리를 위해 일하시고 주님과 닮도록 변화시켜 주십니다(로마서 8:31-32). 비록 우리가 모두 고난과 박해를 당할지라도, 하나님은 변함없는 사랑으로 우리가 감내하도록 도우십니다(33-34절).

MORE THAN CONQUERORS

When my husband coached our son’s Little League baseball team, he rewarded the players with an end-of-year party and acknowledged their improvement over the season. One of our youngest players, Dustin, approached me during the event. “Didn’t we lose the game today?”

“Yes,” I said. “But we’re proud of you for doing your best.”

“I know,” he said. “But we lost. Right?” I nodded.

“Then why do I feel like a winner?” Dustin asked.

Smiling, I said, “Because you are a winner.”

Dustin had thought that losing a game meant he was a failure even when he’d done his best. As believers in Jesus, our battle is not confined to a sports field. Still, it’s often tempting to view a tough season of life as a reflection of our worth.

The apostle Paul affirmed the connection between our present suffering and our future glory as God’s children. Having given Himself for us, Jesus continues to work on our behalf during our
ongoing battle with sin and transforms us to His likeness (ROMANS 8:31–32). Though we’ll all experience hardship and persecution, God’s unwavering love helps us persevere (VV. 33–34).

As His children, we may be tempted to allow struggles to define our worth. However, our ultimate victory is guaranteed. We may stumble along the way, but we’ll always be “more than conquerors” (VV. 35–39).

루이스 로드리게스는 16세 때 이미 마약 판매로 교도소 생활을 했습니다. 그리고 지금은 살인미수 혐의로 체포되어 교도소에 다시 수감되었는데, 종신형 선고를 눈 앞에 두고 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 수형 생활하는 그에게 말씀하셨습니다. 감옥 안에서 젊은 루이스는 어머니가 그를 교회에 열심히 데려갔던 유년 시절을 기억해낸 것입니다. 이제야 루이스는 하나님이 그의 마음을 강하게 이끄시는 것을 느꼈습니다. 루이스는 마침내 자신의 죄를 회개하고 예수님께 돌아왔습니다.

사도행전에서 바울이라고도 불리는 열성적인 유대인 남자 사울을 보게 됩니다. 그는 예수 믿는 사람들을 무자비하게 박해한 죄를 지었으며 마음에 살기가 등등한 사람이었습니다(사도행전 9:1). 그는 폭력배의 두목 같은 사람이었으며, 스테반을 처형할 때 폭도의 일원이었다는 증거가 있습니다(7:58). 그러나 하나님은 사울이 무슨 죄를 지었는지 문자 그대로 말씀하셨습니다. 다메섹으로 가는 길에서 사울은 빛으로 눈이 보이지 않게 되었는데, 그때 예수님이 그에게 “네가 어찌하여 나를 핍박하느냐”(9:4) 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 사울은 “주여 누구시니이까?”(5절) 하고 물었는데, 그것이 그의 새로운 삶의 시작이었습니다. 예수님께 나아간 것입니다.

루이스 로드리게스는 복역했지만 결국 가석방되었습니다. 그 이후로 미국과 중앙아메리카에서 교도소 사역에 평생을 바치며 하나님을 섬겼습니다.

하나님은 아무리 죄가 많은 사람일지라도 구원하십니다. 주님은 우리의 마음을 이끄시고 죄악에 깊이 빠진 우리의 삶에 말씀하십니다. 어쩌면 지금이 바로 우리의 죄를 회개하고 예수님께 나아갈 때인지도 모르겠습니다.

WHO ARE YOU, LORD?

At age sixteen, Luis Rodriguez had already been in jail for selling crack. But now, arrested for attempted murder, he was in prison again—looking at a life sentence. But God spoke into his guilty circumstances. Behind bars, young Luis remembered his early years when his mother had faithfully taken him to church. He now felt God tugging at his heart. Luis eventually repented of his sins and came to Jesus.

In the book of Acts, we meet a zealous Jewish man named Saul, who was also called Paul. He was guilty of aggravated assault on believers in Jesus and had murder in his heart (ACTS 9:1). There’s evidence he was a kind of gang leader, and part of the mob at the execution of Stephen (7:58). But God spoke into Saul’s guilty circumstances— literally. On the street leading into Damascus, Saul was blinded by a light, and Jesus said to him, “Why do you persecute me?” (9:4). Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord?” (V. 5), and that was the beginning of his new life. He came to Jesus.

Luis Rodriguez served time but eventually was granted parole. Since then, he’s served God, devoting his life to prison ministry in the United States and Central America.

God specializes in redeeming the worst of us. He tugs at our hearts and speaks into our guilt-drenched lives. Maybe it’s time we repent of our sins and come to Jesus.

인간은 모험을 위해 만들어졌다

나는 최근에 아주 놀라운 발견을 했습니다. 집 근처 나무들이 우거진 곳으로 나있는 흙길을 걷다가 숨겨져 있는 누군가 만들어 놓은 놀이터를 본 것입니다. 나무로 만든 사다리가 망루로 이어져있고, 낡은 케이블로 만든 그네가 나뭇가지에 매달려 있으며 심지어 큰 나뭇가지들을 잇는 출렁다리도 매달려 있었습니다. 어느 누군가가 오래된 나무와 밧줄로 창조적인 모험의 장소를 만들어 놓은 것입니다!

스위스 의사 폴 투르니에는 우리는 하나님의 형상으로 만들어졌기 때문에(창세기 1:26-27) 모험을 하도록 창조되었다고 믿었습니다. 하나님께서 우주를 창조하시고(1-25절), 선과 악을 선택할 수 있는 인간을 만드시는 모험을 주저하지 않으시면서(3:5-6), 또 인간들을 불러 “생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라, 땅을 정복하라”(1:28)고 하셨으므로, 우리에게도 개발하고, 위험을 무릅쓰면서, 그리고 지구 위에 번성하기 위해 새로운 것을 창조하려는 추진력이 있습니다. 그런 모험들은 클 수도 작을 수도 있겠지만, 다른 이들에게 혜택을 주게 될 때 가장 좋은 것입니다. 단언하건데, 그 놀이터를 만든 사람들은 사람들이 그곳을 찾아 재미있게 이용한다면 무척 기뻐할 것입니다.

새로운 음악을 작곡한다든지, 전도의 새로운 방식을 연구한다든지, 또는 소원해진 결혼 관계를 되살리는 일을 한다든지, 이런 모든 종류의 모험들은 우리의 심장을 뛰게 합니다. 지금 당신은 어떤 새로운 일이나 과제에 몰두하고 있습니까? 어쩌면 하나님께서 새로운 모험으로 인도하고 계실지도 모르겠습니다.

MADE FOR ADVENTURE

I recently made a wonderful discovery. Following a dirt path into a cluster of trees near my home, I found a hidden homemade playground. A ladder made of sticks led up to a lookout, swings
made from old cable spools hung from branches, and there was even a suspension bridge slung between boughs. Someone had turned some old wood and rope into a creative adventure!

Swiss physician Paul Tournier believed that we were made for adventure because we’re made in God’s image (GENESIS 1:26–27). Just as God ventured forth to invent a universe (VV. 1–25), just as He took the risk of creating humans who could choose good or evil (3:5–6), and just as He called us to “be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it” (1:28), we too have a drive to invent, take risks, and create new things as we fruitfully rule the earth. Such adventures may be large or small, but they’re best when they benefit others. I bet the makers of that playground would get a kick out of people finding and enjoying it.

Whether it’s inventing new music, exploring new forms of evangelism, or rekindling a marriage that’s grown distant, adventures of all kinds keep our heart beating. What new task or project is tugging at you right now? Perhaps God is leading you to a new adventure.

거할 처소

제비과에 속한 몸집이 작은 갈색제비는 강기슭에 둥지를 틉니다. 영국 남동부의 토지개발로 인해 그들의 서식지가 줄어들면서 해마다 월동을 끝내고 돌아오는 새들이 둥지를 틀 장소가 점점 찾기 어려워졌습니다. 그 지역의 환경 단체들은 거대한 인조 모래 언덕을 만들어 새들이 집을 지을 수 있도록 긴급 조치를 취했습니다. 모래로 조형물을 만드는 어느 한 회사의 도움으로 모래를 이용해서 새들이 해마다 돌아와 서식할 수 있는 곳을 조성한 것입니다.

이런 연민에 가득 찬 자비로운 조치는 예수님이 제자들을 위로하는 말씀에 생생하게 묘사되어 있습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “내가 가는 곳에 네가 지금은 따라올 수 없으나 후에는 오리라”(요한복음 13:36)라고 말씀하신 후에 천국에 “[그들을] 위해 거처를 예비하러 가신다”(14:2)는 확신을 주셨습니다. 예수님이 제자들이 따라갈 수 없는 길을 곧 간다고 하시니 제자들은 분명히 상심하였으나, 예수님은 이러한 성스러운 일이 천국에서 그들과 우리를 맞이할 준비의 한 과정으로 여기라고 위로하셨습니다.

예수님의 십자가 위에서의 희생이 없었다면 아버지의 집에 우리 모두가 거할 “넉넉한 거처”가 예비되지 않았을 것입니다(2절). 우리 앞서 예비하러 가신 그리스도께서는 주님의 희생으로 주님과 함께 거할 수 있음을 믿는 사람들 을 데리러 다시 오실 거라는 것을 확신시켜 주십니다. 그곳에서 우리는 주님과 함께 영원토록 즐거이 거할 것입니다.

A NESTING PLACE

Sand martins—small birds related to swallows—dig their nests into riverbanks. Land development in South East England reduced their habitat, and the birds had fewer and fewer places to nest when they returned from their winter migration each year. Local conservationists sprang into action and built an enormous artificial sandbank to house them. With the help of a sand-sculpting firm, they molded sand to create a space for the birds to take up residence for years to come.

This gracious act of compassion vividly depicts the words Jesus used to console His disciples. After telling them He’d be leaving and that they wouldn’t be able to go with Him until later (JOHN 13:36), He offered them the assurance that He’d “prepare a place for [them]” in heaven (14:2). Though they were rightly saddened that Jesus said He would leave them soon and that they could not fol- low Him, He encouraged them to look on this holy errand as part of His preparation to receive them—and us.

Without Jesus’ sacrificial work on the cross, the “many rooms” of the Father’s house wouldn’t be able to receive us (V. 2). Having gone before us in preparation, Christ assures us He’ll return and take those who trust in His sacrifice to be with Him. There we’ll take up residence with Him in a joyous eternity. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

새로운 시력

내가 새 안경을 쓰고 예배당에 들어가 앉았을 때 통로 바로 건너편에 친구가 앉아 있는 것을 보았습니다. 친구에게 손을 흔들었는데, 아주 가까이 또렷하게 보였습니다. 몇 미터 떨어져 있었지만 손을 뻗어 바로 만질 수 있을 것 같았습니다. 나중에 예배 후 이야기를 나누면서 나는 그 친구가 항상 같은 자리에 앉아 있었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 단지 내가 내 눈에 맞게 처방된 새 안경을 썼기 때문에 친구를 더 잘 볼 수 있었을 뿐이었습니다.

이사야 선지자를 통해 말씀하시는 하나님은 바벨론에 포로로 잡힌 이스라엘 자손들에게 새로운 처방, 즉 새로운 비전이 필요하다는 것을 아셨습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그들에게 “보라 내가 새 일을 행하리니... 내가 광야에 길을 내겠다”(이사야 43:19)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 하나님은 희망의 말씀을 하시며 하나님께서 그들을 “창조하셨고” “구속하셨으며” 그들과 함께 하실 것임을 상기시켜주셨습니다. 또한 하나님은 “너희는 내것이라”(1절)고 하시며 그들을 격려해 주셨습니다.

NEW VISION

Wearing my new eyeglasses as I stepped into the sanctuary, I sat down and spotted a friend sitting directly across the aisle on the other side of the church. As I waved at her, she looked so near and clear. It felt like I could reach out and touch her even though she was several yards away. Later, as we talked following the service, I realized she was in the same seat she always sat in. I simply could see her better because of an upgraded prescription in my new spectacles.

God, speaking through the prophet Isaiah, knew that the Israelites stuck in Babylonian captivity would need a new prescription—a new view. He told them. “I am doing a new thing! . . . I am making a way in the wilderness” (ISAIAH 43:19). And His message of hope included the reminders that He had “created” them, “redeemed” them, and would be with them. “You are mine,” He encouraged them (V. 1).

In whatever you’re facing today, the Holy Spirit can provide better vision for you to put the old behind you and look for the new. By God’s love (V. 4), it’s popping up all around you. Can you see what He’s doing in the midst of your pain and bondage? Let’s put on our new spiritual glasses to see the new that God is doing even in our wilderness moments. - KATARA PATTON
