하나님께서 용서하실 때

네 살 난 남자아이가 이스라엘의 한 박물관에 전시된 3,500년 된 청동기 시대 희귀 항아리 하나를 실수로 깨뜨렸는데 그에 대한 대응이 친절하고 놀라왔습니다. 박물관 직원이 아이를 용서하고 그를 다시 초대한 것 입니다. 헤흐트 박물관 대변인 로이 샤피르는 그 조치로 복원 과정에 대한 관심이 전 세계적으로 높아졌으며, 어린이도 역사와 고고학에 더 관심을 갖는 계기가 될 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다. 그 일이 치유와 긍정적인 결과로 이어진 것입니다.

이 이야기는 반역한 이스라엘 백성에게 하나님께서 용서를 선언하신 놀라운 모습을 떠올려줍니다. 그들은 하나님께 반역하여 모세의 형 아론에게 우상을 경배하려고 금송아지를 만들어 달라고 간청했습니다(출애굽기 32:1). “(모세가) 진에 가까이 이르러 그 송아지와 그 춤추는 것을 보고 크게 노하여 손에서 그 [언약의] 판들을 산 아래로 던져 깨뜨리니라”(19절).

하나님의 지시에 따라 “모세가 돌판 둘을 처음 것과 같이 깎아 만들고 아침에 일찍이 일어나... 시내 산에 올라갔습니다”(34:4). 그때 하나님이 내려오시면서 “그의 앞으로 지나시며 선포하시되 여호와라 여호와라 자비롭고 은혜로운... 하나님이라 인자를 천대까지 베풀며 악과 과실과 죄를 용서하리라”(6-7절)고 하셨습니다.

이 얼마나 우리를 깊이 깨우쳐주는 말씀인지요. 우리가 아무리 나쁜 죄를 지어도 하나님은 그래도 용서하십니다. 하나님은 우리를 회복시키시기를 간절히 원하십니다.

WHEN GOD FORGIVES

After a four-year-old boy accidentally broke a rare 3,500-yearold Bronze Age jar displayed at a museum in Israel, he received a kind and surprising response. The museum staff forgave him and invited him back. Roee Shafir, speaking for the Hecht Museum, said doing so heightened global interest in the restoration process and might serve to inspire the boy’s interest in history and archaeology—a healing and positive outcome.

The story brings to mind God’s compelling declaration of His forgiveness after rebellion by the Israelites. They’d rebelled against Him by begging Moses’ brother Aaron to make a gold calf for them for idol worship (EXODUS 32:1). “When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets [of covenant law] out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain” (V. 19).

At God’s instruction, “Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning” (34:4). When God came down, He “passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God . . . maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin’ ” (VV. 6-7).

What a profound reminder. Despite our worst sins, God still forgives. He yearns to restore us.

하나님 안에서 강해지기

저는 소년 시절 해적 이야기를 즐겨 읽었습니다. 그 모험 이야기들이 저의 상상력을 얼마나 키워주었는지 모릅니다! 저는 지금 해적 중에 가장 악명 높았던 블랙비어드(실제 이름은 에드워드 티치)의 본거지였던 곳에 살고 있습니다. 이곳 해안 가까운 물속에는 블랙비어드의 배 ‘퀸 앤스 리벤지 (앤 여왕의 복수)호’가 파선되어 가라앉아 있습니다.

우리는 역사 속의 난파선과 험한 바다에서의 모험을 낭만적으로 묘사하기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 바울 사도는 우리에게 주의와 경고를 주는 전혀 다른 종류의 파선에 대해 이야기합니다. 그는 믿음 안에서 얻은 아들 디모데에게 쓴 첫 번째 편지에서 “믿음과 착한 양심을 가지라 어떤 이들은 이 양심을 버렸고 그 믿음에 관하여는 파선하였느니라”(디모데전서 1:19)라고 경고했습니다. 여기서 “파선” 은 무엇을 말할까요? 바울 사도는 참된 믿음에서 떠나 어떤 악한 모습을 택했던 후메내오와 알렉산더 두 사람을 사탄에게 내어 주어 그들로 “훈계를 받아 신성을 모독하지 못하게 하려”(20절) 했습니다. 바울은 그들이 회개하기를 원했지만, 그들의 행동은 비참한 결과를 초래했습니다.

GROWING STRONG IN GOD

As a boy, I loved reading stories about pirates. How those adventures spurred my imagination! Now I live in an area where one of the most infamous of those pirates—Blackbeard (real name, Edward Teach)—had his headquarters. Shipwrecked in the waters off the coast here is Blackbeard’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

We can easily romanticize the wrecks and the high-sea adventures of history. The apostle Paul, however, wrote about a very different kind of shipwreck that provides us with a caution and an exhortation. In his first letter to Timothy, Paul warned his son in the faith to “[hold] on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith” (1 TIMOTHY 1:19). What is this “shipwreck”? Two men, Hymenaeus and Alexander, had in some devastating way departed from the true faith, and the apostle turned them over to Satan “to be taught not to blaspheme” (V. 20). Paul desired them to repent, but the consequences of their actions were dire.

Our faith isn’t static, nor can it exist in a vacuum. We must actively nurture and cultivate our relationship with God to grow strong and healthy in faith and good conscience. May we join with other believers, yield to God’s Spirit, and allow Him to work in us. We can avoid shipwreck.

철이 날카롭게 한다

프로젝트 매니저인 루이즈는 프리랜서로 일하는 것을 후회했습니다. 고객과 디자이너 모두 그녀의 인내심을 시험하는 것 같았습니다. ‘왜 이렇게 힘든 걸까? 사람들은 어째서 이렇게 으르렁댈까?’하는 생각이 들었습니다.

몇 주 후 잠언 27장을 읽다가 “철이 철을 날카롭게 한다”는 17절 말씀이 그의 눈에 들어왔습니다. 그리고 얼마 후 소그룹에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “비단 처럼 부드러운 것으로는 거칠어진 날을 세울 수가 없습니다. 철과 같이 단단한 것이 필요합니다.”

루이즈는 프로젝트의 어려운 문제들이 자신의 거친 부분들을 다듬어 주고 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 루이즈는 더 인내심을 갖고 겸손한 마음으로 새로운 업무 방식에 적응하는 법을 배웠습니다. 그는 하나님께서 이 프로젝트를 통해 자신의 부족한 부분을 알게 하고, 다른 사람들과 함께 일하는 법에 대해 새로이 가르치신다는 결론에 이르렀습니다.

SHARPENED BY IRON

Louise, a project manager, regretted taking on the freelance job. Both the client and designer were testing her patience. Why is it so difficult? she wondered. Why can’t these people get it together?

Weeks later, as she read Proverbs 27, verse 17 stood out—“iron sharpens iron.” “You can’t file down rough edges with something soft, like silk,” she told her small group soon after. “You need something hard, like iron.”

Louise realized that the challenges in the project were smoothing down some rough edges of her own. She was learning to be more patient and humble, and to adapt to different working styles. God, she concluded, was using the project to expose her flaws and teach her new lessons about working with others.

Much of the book of Proverbs extols the value of godly wisdom, but this wisdom doesn’t come easily. It needs to be sought after with obedience and discernment (3:13; 13:20; 19:20), and refined in crucibles and furnaces, mortars and pestles (27:21-22)— situations that may mean temporary pain and suffering.

Yet the Bible reminds us that challenges come with rewards: In seeking God’s wisdom diligently and obeying His ways, we’ll find true security, satisfaction, and blessing (VV. 26-27).

이해하시는 하나님

존 케닉은 지금까지 마땅히 표현할 말이 없었던 우리의 복잡한 감정들에 새롭게 이름을 붙여 ‘모호한 슬픔에 이름 붙이기’라는 용어 모음집을 냈습니다. 이 책에는 “지금 이 순간이 추억이 될 것이라는 자각”을 뜻하는 ‘데 뷰’, “한 번에 한 장소밖에 거주할 수 없는 한 몸에만 갇혀 있는 데 대한 좌절감”을 뜻하는 ‘오니즘’ 같은 단어들이 있습니다. 케닉은 인간으로서 겪는 독특하고 낯선 경험들을 모두 표현할 수 있게 하여 사람들이 그런 상황에서 혼자만 그런 것이 아니라는 것을 느낄 수 있도록 하는 것이 자신의 사명이라고 말합니다.

우리가 겪는 상황에 맞는 적절한 단어를 항상 찾을 수는 없어도, 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 하나님께서 인간의 소중함을 아시고 이해하신다는 것을 알 때 큰 위로가 됩니다. 하나님은 인간을 매우 귀하게 보셔서 피조물을 돌보는 일을 맡기셨습니다(히브리서 2:7-8). 그리고 예수님 때문에 하나님은 인간으로 사는 것이 어떤 것인지를 완전히 이해하십니다. 그리스도께서 완전한 인간이 되신 하나님이시기에, 믿는 사람들은 예수님의 “형제자매들”(12절, 새번역)이라고 불립니다.

GOD UNDERSTANDS

In his Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, John Koenig offers a collection of new words, each invented to give a name to complicated feelings we previously lacked a word for. His book includes words like dés vu, “the awareness that this moment will become a memory,” and onism, “the frustration of being stuck in just one body, that inhabits only one place at one time.” Koenig says his mission is to shed light on all of the unique and strange experiences of being human, so that people can feel less alone in those experiences.

While we might not always be able to find a word for what we’re going through, believers in Jesus can take great comfort in knowing that God values and understands what it’s like to be human. He values people so much that He chose to entrust humanity with caring for creation (HEBREWS 2:7-8). And because of Jesus, God understands completely what it’s like to live as a human. Christ is God made fully human, which means other believers are called Jesus’ “brothers and sisters” (V. 12).

Christ not only understands all our experiences and temptations (4:15), but He has also broken “the power of death” over our lives (2:14). Because of Him, our experiences need not cause us to feel afraid or alone. Instead, we can celebrate the gift of being human.

폭풍을 잠잠케 하심

세 살 난 조카가 어떤 상황에서도 예수님을 신뢰할 수 있다는 것을 이해하기 시작했습니다. 천둥번개가 치는 어느 날 밤, 아이는 잠자리에 들기 전 눈을 감고 두 손 모아 이렇게 기도했습니다. “사랑하는 예수님, 여기 우리와 함께 계시는 걸 알아요. 우리를 사랑하시는 것도 알아요. 그리고 예수님이 폭풍에게 멈추라고 하시면 멈추는 것도 알아요.”

이 아이는 갈릴리 바다를 건너던 예수님과 제자들의 이야기를 얼마 전에 들었던 것 같습니다. 돌풍으로 배가 거의 뒤집히기 전 예수님께서 배 뒤편에서 주무시고 계셨던 이야기입니다. 제자들은 예수님을 깨우며 “우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까”라고 말했습니다. 예수님은 그들에게 대답하시는 대신 자연 세계를 향해 “잠잠하라 고요하라”고 말씀하셨습니다(마가복음 4:38-39).

배 안으로 쏟아져 들어오던 물이 즉시 멈추고 요란한 바람도 잦아들었습니다. 고요를 되찾자 예수님은 제자들을 바라보시며 말씀하셨습니다. “어찌하여 이렇게 무서워하느냐 너희가 어찌 믿음이 없느냐”(40절). 나는 제자들의 얼굴을 타고 내리던 물줄기가 수염 끝에 방울 맺혀 떨어지는 순간, 놀란 눈으로 예수님을 바라보는 제자들의 모습을 마음 속에 그려봅니다.

오늘날 우리도 그 순간 제자들이 가졌던 그 경외심을 가지고 살 수 있다면 어떨까요? 예수님의 권위와 능력을 새롭게 깨달으며 모든 걱정거리를 바라볼 수 있다면 어떨까요? 그러면 우리의 어린아이 같은 믿음이 두려움을 쫓아낼 수도 있을 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 만나는 모든 폭풍이 예수님의 자비의 손 안에 있다는 것을 믿을 수 있을 것입니다.

CALMING THE STORM

My three-year-old niece is beginning to understand that she can trust Jesus in any situation. One night as she prayed before bedtime during a thunderstorm, she pressed her hands together, closed her eyes, and said, “Dear Jesus, I know You’re here with us. I know You love us. And I know that the storm will stop when You tell it to stop.”

I suspect she had recently heard the story of Jesus and the disciples as they crossed the Sea of Galilee. It’s the one where Jesus fell asleep in the back of the boat just before a squall nearly capsized the vessel. The disciples woke Him and said, “Don’t you care if we drown?” Jesus didn’t speak to them but instead addressed the natural world: “Quiet! Be still!” (MARK 4:38-39).

Immediately the water stopped splashing into the boat. The howling wind subsided. There in the silence, Jesus looked at His followers and said, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (V. 40). I imagine their wide eyes staring back at Him as water coursed down their faces and dripped from their beards.

What if we could live today with the awe the disciples felt in that moment? What if we could view every concern with a fresh awareness of Jesus’ authority and power? Maybe then our childlike faith would chase away our fear. Maybe then we would believe that each storm we face is at His mercy.

혼자서는 할 수 없습니다

자메이카의 던스리버 폭포에 오르는 것은 신나는 경험입니다. 폭포의 올라가 정상에 이르는 것은 등반가들에게 매우 힘들었고, 십 대의 JW 에게는 거의 불가능한 일이었습니다. 그는 시력 장애로 세상을 바늘 구멍만큼만 볼 수 있었기 때문입니다.

그러나 JW는 등반하려는 마음을 굳게 먹고, 그의 친구 요시아는 기꺼이 그와 함께 하기로 했습니다. 요시야는 JW의 눈이 되어 어떤 미끄러운 바위를 피해야 하는지, 어디에 손과 발을 짚어야 하는지를 알려주었고, JW는 요시아의 마음이 되어 참된 용기가 어떤 것인지를 보여주었습니다.

우리의 삶도 그처럼 힘겨운 등반과 같습니다. 우리는 혼자 걸어가서는 안됩니다. 솔로몬 왕은 우리에게 그 진리를 가르쳐줍니다. “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것임이라”(전도서 4:9). 요시야와 JW 는 둘 다 특별한 것을 시도했고 그것은 함께 해야만 해 낼 수 있는 일이었습니다. 성경 말씀은 이어집니다. “혹시 그들이 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 붙들어 일으키려니와 홀로 있어 넘어지고 붙들어 일으킬 자가 없는 자에게는 화가 있으리라”(10절). 그들은 둘 다 넘어지거나 실패하지 않았습니다. 둘이 함께 목표를 이루었습니다.

솔로몬이 명확히 알려주었고 또 이 두 십대 소년이 생생히 보여준 것처럼, 하나님은 우리가 함께 일하도록 계획하셨습니다. 하나님이 우리에게 맡기신 일들을 가장 잘 하는 방법은 다른 사람들과 더불어 각 사람이 하나님이 주신 기술과 감정을 모두 사용하여 하나님을 드러내는 결과를 만들어내는 것입니다.

IT TAKES TWO

Climbing Jamaica’s Dunn’s River Falls is an exhilarating experience. Water cascades over the smooth rocks of the falls on its way to the Caribbean. It’s a challenge as climbers battle the water’s flow to make their way to the top. For a teenager named JW, it’s a near impossibility. He’s sight-impaired, with only a pinhole view of the world.

But JW was determined to climb, and his friend Josiah was willing to team up with him. Josiah was JW’s eyes—telling him which slippery rocks to avoid and where to put his hands and feet. And JW was Josiah’s heart—showing him what courage looks like.

So much of life is like that daunting climb: We shouldn’t walk alone. King Solomon points us to that truth. “Two people are better than one, for they can help each other succeed” (Ecclesiastes 4:9 nlt). Both Josiah and JW were attempting something special—and they could do it only in tandem. The passage continues: “If either [person] falls down, one can help the other up” (V. 10). But neither fell and neither failed. Together, they reached their goals.

God’s design for people, presented clearly by Solomon and demonstrated vividly by these two teenagers, is that we work together. The tasks God calls us to do are best done with others—each using what skills and emotions God has given to bring an outcome that points to Him.

얼마든지 보살피시는 분

‘하나님이 어떻게 이 사람들을 모두 보살필 수 있을까?’ 집에서 수천 마일 떨어진 인구 많은 도시의 붐비는 열차 승강장에 내리며 그런 생각이 스쳤습니다. 처음으로 해외 여행하던 십 대 시절, 나는 내가 접하는 세상의 광활함에 완전히 압도당했습니다. 나는 상대적으로 작게 느껴졌고, 하나님께서 어떻게 그 많은 사람들을 사랑하실 수 있을지 궁금했습니다.

나는 하나님의 완전한 사랑이 어디까지 미칠 수 있는지 그 당시 아직 몰랐습니다. 성경의 선지자 요나도 이것을 이해하지 못했습니다. 그의 고국 이스라엘을 탄압했던 잔인한 앗수르 제국의 수도 니느웨를 향해 회개하라고 외치라는 하나님의 명령에 마침내 순종하면서도 요나는 하나님이 그들을 용서하는 것을 원치 않았습니다. 그러나 니느웨 사람들이 회개하여 하나님이 그들을 멸하시지 않자 요나는 화를 냈습니다. 하나님이 빠르게 자라는 박넝쿨로 요나에게 쉼터를 마련해 주셨다가 나중에 그 그늘을 없애 버리자 요나는 더욱 화가 났습니다. 요나의 불평에 하나님은 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “네가... 이 박넝쿨을 아꼈거든 하물며 이 큰 성읍 니느웨에는... 십이만여 명이... 있나니 내가 어찌 아끼지 아니하겠느냐”(요나 4:10-11).

하나님은 그분에게서 멀어진 사람들까지도 깊이 보살필 정도로 아주 크신 분입니다. 하나님의 사랑은 우리의 궁극적인 문제를 해결하시기 위해 예수님을 십자가에 죽게 하시고 부활하게 하셨습니다. 하나님의 위대함은 그분의 선하심으로 분명히 드러납니다. 하나님은 우리를 그분께 가까이 이끄시기를 원하십니다.

GREAT ENOUGH TO CARE

How could God possibly care about all these people? The thought hit me as I stepped off a busy train platform in a crowded city, thousands of miles from home. I was a teenager traveling abroad for the first time, and I was overwhelmed by the size of the world around me. I felt small by comparison and wondered how God could love so many people.

I had yet to understand the broad reach of God’s perfect love. In Scripture, the prophet Jonah couldn’t fathom this either. When Jonah finally obeyed God’s call to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh, the capital of the brutal Assyrian Empire that had oppressed his native Israel, Jonah didn’t want God to forgive them. But the city did repent, and when God didn’t destroy them, Jonah was angry. God provided shelter for Jonah through a fast-growing plant but then took his shade away, which angered him all the more. Jonah complained, but God responded, “You have been concerned about this plant . . . . And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people?” (JONAH 4:10-11).

God’s so great that He’s able to care deeply for those who are far from Him. His love goes to the lengths of the cross and empty tomb of Jesus to meet our ultimate need. His greatness manifests itself in goodness, and He longs to draw us near.

염려를 맡기라

휴대폰에 저장한 예약 확인 번호로 탑승수속을 하려고 해당 항공사의 무인발권기로 갔습니다. 그런데 전화기가 없었습니다! 탔던 차 안에 두고 내린 것입니다. 나를 내려준 그 운전기사에게 어떻게 연락할 수 있을까?

너무 늦지 않았나 걱정하며 서둘러 공항 와이파이에 컴퓨터를 연결했습니다. 와이파이로 연결하자 마자 이메일 하나가 와 있었습니다. 남편이 앱을 통해 공항에 있는 나에게 전화기가 없다는 것을 벌써 알고 이메일을 보낸 것입니다. 그의 이메일에는 “그 차량 업체 번호를 보내주면 내가 해결할게.”라고 적혀 있었습니다. 문제를 해결하기 위해 남편이 재빨리 나서주어 저는 곧 안도의 한숨을 내쉴 수 있었습니다.

이것이 바로 하나님이 우리가 예수님을 통해 하나님과의 관계에서 누리기 원하시는 평안이라 믿습니다. 베드로전서 5장 7절은 “[우리] 염려를 다 주께 맡기라 이는 그가 [우리]를 돌보심이라”고 말합니다. 곧 하나님이 우리의 걱정과 염려를 해결해 주기를 원하신다는 것입니다. 왜 그럴까요? 그만큼 하나님이 우리를 사랑하시기 때문입니다. 우리가 모든 걱정을 스스로 해결하려고 머리를 싸매기보다, 하나님께 그것들을 맡기면 됩니다.

우리의 염려를 하나님께 맡기는 것은 하나님이 우리의 문제를 우리보다 더 잘 해결하실 수 있다는 것을 인정하는 겸손의 표현입니다(6절). 어떤 일로 우리에게 잠깐 고난이 있더라도(10절) 우리는 하나님의 보살핌과 예비하심 가운데 평안할 수 있습니다.

CASTING CARES

I walked to the airline kiosk to check in using the confirmation number stored in my cell phone. But my phone was missing! I’d left it behind in the car that had dropped me off. So how could I contact the ride-hailing driver who’d dropped me off?

As I scrambled to connect my laptop to the airport’s Wi-Fi, I worried it was too late. Utilizing an app, my husband noticed my phone wasn’t with me at the airport and had already sent me an email—waiting for me as soon as I connected to the Wi-Fi. His email said, “Send me the car service’s number and I’ll take care of it.” My husband had jumped in to take care of things— giving me an immediate sense of peace.

This is part of the peace I believe God wants us to enjoy in the relationship we can experience with Him through Christ. First Peter 5:7 reminds us to “cast all [our] anxiety on him because he cares for [us].” This verse says that God wants to take on our worries and concerns. Why? Because He cares that much for us. We can give our cares to God rather than allowing them to swim around in our heads as we try to figure things out.

Casting our anxiety on God is a form of humility that acknowledges that He’s much more capable of handling our concerns than we are (V. 6). Although something may pop up to cause us to suffer (V. 10), we can rest in His care and provision.

기도하는 자세

지미는 오랜 시간 만성 질환과 싸우며 지쳐 있었습니다. 매일 아침 기도하고 말씀을 묵상하며 하나님과 시간을 보내고 싶었지만, 도무지 통증 없이 의자에 앉을 수 있는 방법이 없었습니다. 이쪽저쪽으로 몸을 움직여 봐도 통증은 가시지 않았습니다. 끝내는 포기하고 무릎을 꿇었습니다. 그러자 그 기도 자세가 괴로운 통증을 덜어주었습니다. 그 날 이후로 지미는 무릎을 꿇고 하나님께 부르짖는 기도를 드리게 되었고 그 가운데 평안을 누렸습니다.

유다 왕 여호사밧은 통증이 아닌 위협하는 적들과의 전쟁을 마주했습니다 (역대하 20:1-2). 왕은 “두려워하여 여호와께로 낯을 향하여 간구했습니다” (3절). 유다의 모든 백성들도 “여호와께 도우심을 구하려” 기도했습니다(4절). 하나님은 그들의 기도를 들으시고 하나님의 영이 레위 사람 야하시엘에게 임하여 이 같은 위로의 말씀을 왕에게 전하게 했습니다: “너희는... 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라... 여호와가 너희와 함께 하리라”(15, 17절). 여호사밧이 “몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대니” 모두 “여호와 앞에 엎드려 여호와께 경배하였습니다”(18절).

우리는 고통스럽고 힘들 때에 종종 하나님의 임재를 더욱 강력하게 경험합니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 그분의 뜻에 순종하며 진심으로 기도하는 자세로 살아갈 때 우리는 주 안에서 위로와 평안을 찾을 수 있습니다.

A PRAYERFUL POSTURE

A lengthy battle with a chronic illness had taken its toll on Jimmy. Though he desired to spend time with God each morning, praying to Him and meditating on the Scriptures, he couldn’t find a way to position his body in his chair that wasn’t painful. He shifted from side to side, but there was no relief. Finally, in desperation, he fell to his knees. As he did, that prayerful posture proved to lessen the agonizing ache. In the mornings that followed, Jimmy spent time with God on his knees—experiencing comfort even as he called out to Him in prayer.

Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, also faced a battle—not with pain but with threatening enemies (2 CHRONICLES 20:1-2). The king was “terrified by this news and begged the Lord for guidance” (V. 3 NLT). All the people of Judah sought “help from the Lord” as well (V. 4). God heard their prayers, and His Spirit came upon a Levite named Jahaziel, who delivered this comforting message to the king: “Do not be afraid or discouraged . . . . The Lord will be with you” (VV. 15, 17). Jehoshaphat “bowed down with his face to the ground” and everyone “fell down in worship before the Lord” (V. 18).

In painful and challenging times, we can often experience God’s nearness in a powerful way. As He helps us submit to His will and live out a prayerful posture in our hearts, we can find comfort and peace in Him.

하나님의 길은 사랑입니다

나는 시간 여유가 생겨 다가오는 몇 달 동안 힘이 닿는 한 사람들을 섬기는 일에 집중하려고 계획했습니다. 그러나 새 친구를 돕다가 넘어져 팔이 세 군데나 부러지는 바람에 갑자기 내가 도움이 필요한 사람이 되었습니다. 성도들이 문병을 오고, 상품권과 꽃, 전화, 문자, 기도, 음식(초콜릿 한 상자까지), 그리고 일 심부름 등으로 나를 돌보아주었습니다. 나의 가족과 친구들, 그리고 동료 교인들은 너무나 친절했습니다! 마치 하나님께서 “그냥 앉아있어. 넌 도움이 필요해. 돌봄이 어떤 것인지 보여줄게”라고 말씀하시는 것 같았습니다. 나는 그들 덕분에 마음을 다해 섬기는 것과, 사람들로 인해 하나님께 감사하는 마음이 어떤 것인지 더 잘 알게 되었습니다.

동료 교인들은 바울이 로마에 있는 성도들에게 권면한 그대로(로마서 12) 나를 정성껏 도왔습니다. 바울은 그들에게 신실하게 사랑하고, 서로 우애하고 존경하며, 성도들의 필요를 공급하는 등, 여러 면으로 권면했습니다(9-13절). 바울은 그의 서신 전체를 통해 그들에게 교리를 가르쳤지만, 동시에 그리스도 안에 있는 생명은 추상적인 신학이 아니라 우리가 매일 살아가는 현실의 삶으로 나타난다는 것도 가르쳤습니다(12-16장). 하나님의 길은 사랑입니다. 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 표현하는 여러 방법 중 하나는 그분께 받은 사랑을 다시 다른 사람들에게 부어주는 것입니다.

우리가 매일 교회나 지역의 사람들을 도울 방법을 찾아 행할 때, 그들은 격려를 받고 우리는 축복을 받으며 하나님은 찬양을 받으실 것입니다.

GOD’S WAY IS LOVE

With extra time on my hands, my plan for the coming months centered on serving people as much as I could. But while helping a new friend, I tripped and fell and broke my arm in three places. Suddenly I was the one in need. God’s people cared for me with visits, gift cards, flowers, phone calls, texts, prayers, meals (and even a box of chocolates), and by running errands. I couldn’t believe how kind my family, friends, and fellow church members were! It was as if God were saying, “Sit down. You need help. You’ll see what caring looks like.” Because of them, I know more about serving from the heart and feeling grateful to God for others.

Fellow believers eagerly helped me in the ways Paul instructed the church members living in Rome to follow (ROMANS 12). He encouraged them in many ways, including to love sincerely, to be devoted to one another in love, to honor others, and to share with those in need (VV. 9-13). Paul taught them doctrine throughout his letter. But he also shared that life in Christ isn’t abstract theology—it’s shown in our practical daily living (CHS. 12-16). God’s way is love. Receiving and then pouring out His love on others is one of many ways to express His love for us.

As we look for and find everyday ways to serve people in our churches or communities, they’ll be encouraged, we’ll be blessed, and God will be praised.
