끝까지 안고가시는 하나님

릴리 커닝햄은 110세 나이에도 지팡이나 보행기에 의존하지 않습니다. 대신 그녀가 전적으로 의지하는 것이 있는데, 바로 매일 밤낮으로 그녀가 읽는 하나님의 말씀입니다. 그리고 주일마다 교회에 출석합니다. 커닝햄은 자신의 일생을 돌아보며 이렇게 말합니다. “저는 항상 하나님께서 우리를 끝까지 안고 가주실 것이라는 믿음과 신뢰를 가지고 살았습니다.”

커닝햄은 전쟁과 팬데믹, 그리고 남편과 형제자매의 죽음을 포함한 수 많은 어려움 속에서도 자신을 안고 지나가주신 하나님을 신뢰하며 찬양합니다. 그녀의 삶은 “아침마다 주의 인자하심을 알리며 밤마다 [주의] 성실하심을 베푸심이라”(시편 92:1-2)고 고백한 시편 기자의 삶과 닮아 있습니다. 또한 그녀의 끈기는 “의인은 종려나무 같이 번성하며...이는 여호와의 집에 심겼음이여... 그는 늙어도 여전히 결실하며 진액이 풍족하고 빛이 청청하다”(12-14절)하신 시편의 말씀을 떠올리게 합니다. 그녀도 시편 기자처럼 이 모든 것을 하나님께로 돌립니다(15절).

우리는 백세가 넘은 커닝햄의 삶에서 많은 것을 배울 수 있습니다. 그녀처럼 우리도 기도하고 성경을 읽고 “우리 하나님의 뜰 안에서” 예배하는 삶(13절)을 통해 하나님과 교제하며 그분을 찬양하는 삶을 살기를 기원합니다. 이 땅에서 장수할 거라는 약속을 받은 것은 아니지만 하나님께서 우리를 영생을 위해 준비 시키시는 동안 “진액이 풍족하고 빛이 청청하게”(14절) 살 수 있습니다.

CARRIED THROUGH

Lillie Cunningham is 110 years old, yet she isn’t reliant on a cane or walker. She does rely on Scripture, however, which she reads every morning and night—and attends church every Sunday. When she considers her life, she states, “I just always had faith and trust in God that he was going to carry us through.”

cMrs. Cunningham trusts in and praises God for carrying her through hardships, including wars, pandemics, and the death of her husband and siblings. Her life resembles that of the psalmist who proclaimed God’s “love in the morning and [His] faithfulness at night” (PSALM 92:1-2); and her perseverance points to the psalmist’s words: “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree . . . ; planted in the house of the Lord . . . . They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green” (VV. 12-14). And like the psalmist, she attributes it all to God (V. 15).

We can learn much from this centenarian’s example. Like Lillie, may we live our lives in communion with and praise for God by spending time in prayer, reading Scripture, and worshiping “in the courts of our God” (V. 13). We aren’t promised a long life on earth, but through Him, we can stay “fresh and green” (V. 14) as God prepares us for eternal life with Him.

하나님과 발 맞추어

앞을 전혀 볼 수 없는 상태에서 온 힘을 다해 전력질주한다는 것이 상상이 되십니까?

바로 패럴림픽 가이드 러닝에서 그렇게 합니다. 시각장애인 선수 들이 옆에서 발을 맞추어 함께 뛰는 안내자와 짧은 끈으로 연결되어 달립니다. 세계에서 가장 빠른 시각장애인 패럴림픽 선수 중 하나인 미국의 육상 선수 데이비드 브라운은 100미터를 11초 안에 주파하여 금메달을 획득했습니다. 제롬 에이버리는 브라운의 선수 생활 대부분 동안 그의 가이드로 함께 뛰었 습니다. 브라운은 두 사람의 연결에 대해 이렇게 묘사했습니다. “우리는 마치 한 사람 같습니다.” 에이버리도 이 말에 동의하며 “마치 한 사람이 달리는 것처럼 보여야 합니다”라고 말했습니다.

IN STEP WITH GOD

Can you imagine sprinting as hard as you can possibly run . . . without being able to see?

That’s what happens in Paralympic guide running. Blind runners compete with a guide, someone who runs alongside them step by step, connected by a short tether. American runner David Brown is among the world’s fastest blind Paralympian runners, having won a gold medal for running a 100-meter dash in under eleven seconds. Jerome Avery was Brown’s guide for much of his career. Brown described their connection this way: “We’re like one person.” Avery agreed, saying, “It should look like one person running.”

What a beautiful illustration of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Even when we’re running with all we’ve got, the Spirit stays perfectly in step with us—directing our every movement, guiding us this way and that.

In Galatians 5, Paul describes how we overcome struggles with sin: by being in sync with the Spirit’s work in us. He writes, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (V. 16). A few verses later, he adds, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (V. 25). That, he says, would enable us to step past the “acts of the flesh” (V. 19) so we can be spiritually fruitful (VV. 22-23).

Let’s walk—and maybe even run—in step with the Spirit.

슬픔 중에 은혜

강 위를 날던 관광 헬리콥터가 공중에서 산산조각이 나는 뉴스를 보며 전 세계는 경악을 금치 못했습니다. 주 회전날개와 꼬리 부분이 떨어져 나가자 기체는 조종사와 한 가족 다섯을 태우고 그대로 강물 속으로 곤두박질쳐버렸습니다. 사랑하는 누이와 매부, 그리고 여자 조카 하나와 남자 조카 둘을 모두 잃은 한 형제는 사고 후 며칠이 지나 현장을 찾아 이들을 기리며 말했습니다. “식구들이 다 같이 떠나갔네요.”

삶이란 때로 순식간에 바뀌어 도무지 이해가 안되는 상실로 비틀거리게 만듭니다. 욥 역시 말로 표현할 수 없는 상실과 슬픔을 겪었습니다. 비극이 일어난 날, 사환들이 욥에게 와서 그의 종들이 죽임을 당했고 가축들도 죽거나 끌려갔다는 소식을 전했습니다(욥기 1:13–17). 이어서 훨씬 더 충격적인 소식이 전해졌습니다. 욥의 일곱 아들과 세 딸이 함께 있는데 강풍으로 집이 무너지면서 모두 목숨을 잃었다는 것이었습니다(18–19절). “욥이 일어나 겉옷을 찢고 머리털을 밀고 땅에 엎드려 예배하며”(20절) 깊은 고통 가운데 이렇게 고백했습니다. “주신 이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다”(21절).

욥은 자신이 왜 그런 고통을 겪어야 하는지 알지 못했지만, 가장 어두운 시간 속에서도 하나님께 경배를 드렸습니다. 그러한 욥에게 하나님은 침묵을 깨시고 자신의 위대한 지혜와 능력을 상기시켜주셨고, 욥은 하나님의 주권적인 계획을 신뢰할 수 있었습니다(38–42장).

우리는 비극이 왜 일어나는지 다 이해하지 못하지만, 우리를 위로하시는 하나님께 우리의 고통을 가지고 나아갈 수 있습니다.

GRACE IN GRIEF

The world watched the news in horror as the sightseeing helicopter flying over the river tore into pieces. As the main rotor and tail broke off, the cabin plunged into the waters below, with the pilot and a family of five trapped inside. Just days after the tragedy that had taken the lives of his sister, brother-in-law, niece, and two nephews, the brother was at the site honoring his loved ones. “They left together,” he said.

Life can change in a moment, leaving us reeling from loss we can’t explain. Job also suffered unspeakable loss and sorrow. One tragic day, messengers told Job that his servants had been killed and his livestock were stolen or dead (JOB 1:13-17). Then Job received even more devastating news. While his seven sons and three daughters were together, a mighty wind caused the house they were in to collapse, killing them (VV. 18-19). “At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship” (V. 20). In anguish, Job said, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised” (V. 21).

Job didn’t know why he had to suffer, but even in his darkest hour he worshiped God. Breaking His silence, God reminded Job of His great wisdom and power, and he was able to trust God’s sovereign plan (CHS. 38-42).

We may never understand why tragedies strike, but we can take our pain to God, who comforts us.

1963년 9월, 웨일스의 미술가 존 페츠는 미국 앨라배마주 버밍햄의 16번가 침례교회에서 벌어진 인종차별적 폭탄 테러로 네 명의 흑인 소녀가 죽었다는 뉴스를 들었습니다. 그는 돕고 싶은 마음에 교회의 부서진 스테인드글라스 창을 다시 만들어 주겠다고 제안했습니다. 웨일스의 사람들은 곧바로 기금을 모았습니다.

페츠가 새로 만든 멋진 창은 십자가에 달린 예수님의 모습을 담고 있었 습니다. 오른손은 증오를 밀어내는 듯 창틀을 밀고 있고, 왼손은 용서를 베푸는 듯 활짝 펴져 있습니다. 창문의 맨아래에는 “너희가 내게 한 것이라”는 문구가 적혀 있습니다. 예수님은 과연 누구에게 이 말씀을 하시는 걸까요? 네 명의 어린 성도들을 죽인 인종차별 단체에게 하신 말씀일까요, 아니면 그 창문을 기증한 웨일스 사람들에게 하신 말씀일까요?

어쩌면 둘 중 하나를 선택할 필요가 없을지도 모릅니다. 회심하기 전 사울은 예수님의 제자들을 박해했습니다(사도행전 9:1–2). 그러나 그리스도께서 그에게 나타나 “사울아 사울아 네가 어찌하여 ‘나’를 박해하느냐”(4절)고 물으셨습니다. 예수님께서는 자신의 백성들과 자신을 너무나도 동일시하시기에 그들을 해치거나 축복하는 것은 곧 주님 자신을 해치거나 축복하는 것과 같습니다.

사울이 깨달았던 것처럼, 예수님은 삶을 변화시키는 용서를 베푸심으로써 증오를 밀어내십니다(9:17–20). 예수님의 오른손과 왼손은 항상 함께 일하시며, 고통받는 그분의 백성들의 어깨에서 결코 손을 거두지 않으십니다.

YOU DO IT TO ME

In September 1963, Welsh artist Jon Petts heard the news that a racially motivated bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, had killed four African American girls. Wanting to help, he offered to replace the church’s shattered stained-glass window. The people of Wales soon raised the funds.

Petts’ striking replacement window shows Jesus on the cross, His right hand pressing against the frame to signify His pushing out hatred, and His left hand open, offering forgiveness. Along the bottom of the window run the words, you do it to me. One wonders who Jesus is talking to in those words—the racist group that killed those young believers or the Welsh people who donated the window?

Maybe we don’t have to choose. Before his conversion, Saul persecuted Jesus’ disciples (ACTS 9:1-2). Yet, when Christ appeared to him, He said, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (V. 4). Jesus identifies so closely with His people that to harm or bless them is to harm or bless the Lord Himself.

As Saul discovered, Jesus pushes out hatred by offering transforming forgiveness (9:17-20). His right and left hands always work together—and are never taken off the shoulders of His suffering people.

양을 낚는 어부

사람들이 가던 길을 멈추고 다시 쳐다보게 되는 영상이 하나 있었습니다. 예멘의 어부들이 홍해에 빠진 수백 마리의 양을 필사적으로 구조하고 있는 영상이었습니다. 수천 마리의 양을 실은 배가 예멘 라스 알-아라 해안 근처에서 좌초된 것이었습니다. 지부티로 향하던 그 배가 전복되어 160 마리가 넘는 양이 익사했습니다. 그러나 어쩌다보니 양을 낚게 된 그 어부들의 합심어린 노력 덕분에 많은 양들이 목숨을 건졌습니다.

그 영상을 처음 보았을 때 “우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔다”(53:6)고 한 이사야 선지자의 말이 떠올랐습니다. 바로 그 순간, 아마도 구약과 신약이 아름답게 조화를 이루는 방식을 반영하듯, 예수님이 제자들을 처음 부르시던 장면이 기억 속에서 떠올랐습니다. 마태복음은 예수님이 갈릴리 바닷가를 걸으시면서 “나를 따라오라 내가 너희를 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라”(4:19)고 하시며 우리를 초청하신 것을 기록하고 있습니다.

오늘날 예수님의 제자로 살아가고자 하는 우리에게도 똑같은 부르심이 주어집니다. 예수님은 우리를 사람을 낚는 어부로 부르십니다. 왜일까요? 우리 모두는 하나님의 길과 뜻과 말씀으로부터 벗어나 길을 잃은 양과 같기 때문입니다. 우리에게는 구조의 손길이 필요합니다. 구조자이신 구주 예수를 만나는 것은 그분의 제자들을 통해 이루어질 수 있습니다. 예수님은 그분만의 아름다운 방식으로 그분의 양들인 우리를 다른 양들을 낚는 어부로 만드십니다.

FISHERS OF SHEEP

It was one of those videos that makes you stop and do a double take—Yemeni fishermen frantically rescuing hundreds of sheep from the Red Sea. A ship carrying thousands of sheep had run aground off the coast of Ras Al-Ara, Yemen. The vessel was headed for Djibouti when it capsized, leading to the drowning of more than 160 sheep. However, many were saved due to the combined efforts of a group of fishermen who found themselves, well, fishing for sheep.

Isaiah’s words came to mind when I first saw that image: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray” (53:6). In the same moment, perhaps reflecting the way the Old and New Testaments beautifully work in tandem, Jesus’ invitation to His first disciples surfaced from my memory. Matthew’s gospel records His invitation as He walked beside the Sea of Galilee: “‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people’” (4:19).

For those of us intent on being Jesus’ disciples today, that same invitation is offered. Jesus calls us to fish for people. And why? People—and that means all of us—are like sheep who have strayed from God’s ways and will and words. We need rescue. Being introduced to the Savior can take place by way of His disciples. In His beautiful way, Jesus makes us—His sheep—fishers of other sheep.

폐허가 주는 교훈

고고학자 이반 슈프라츠는 “뱀과 곤충, 재규어 뿐 아니라 다른 것도 모두 조심해야 한다”고 말했습니다. 그는 팀을 이루어 전기톱과 정글용 칼을 들고 잃어버린 도시 오쿰툰을 찾기 위해 울창한 밀림을 헤치며 나아갔습니다. 이 고대 도시는 한때 번성했던 멕시코 유카탄 반도의 마야 문명과 함께 자취를 감추었는데 그 이유는 아무도 알지 못합니다.

작가 조지 윌은 “역사 연구는 크게 보면 폐허를 연구하는 것”이라고 말했습니다. 이는 인간이 영원히 지속되는 것을 만들지 못한다는 것을 말해주는 적절한 증언입니다.

새로운 것을 창조하기 위해 열심히 일하는 것은 하나님의 형상을 나타내는 한가지 방법입니다. 그러나 교만의 치명적인 덫을 조심해야 합니다. 무엇을 하든지 영원하신 하나님을 위해 그분이 주시는 힘으로 해야 합니다. 하나님은 우리에게 “흔들리지 않는 나라”(히브리서 12:28)를 약속하십니다.

THE LESSON IN THE RUINS

“You have to be careful about the snakes, insects, jaguars and everything else,” said archaeologist Ivan Šprajc. Wielding chainsaws and machetes, he and his team slashed through thick jungle to try to reach the lost city of Ocumtún. The ancient metropolis had disappeared along with the rest of the once-vibrant Mayan civilization on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. No one knows why.

“The study of history is, in large measure, the study of ruins,” says author George Will—an apt testimony to our human inability to do things that last.

In the Bible, we read a prophecy about a thriving city. “They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers,” God said through His prophet Ezekiel (26:4). “Out in the sea she will become a place to spread fishnets” (V. 5). Tyre had been “a power on the seas” who put “terror on all who lived there” (V. 17). They’d also celebrated Jerusalem’s fall (V. 2). A companion prophecy says of Tyre’s destruction, “The Lord Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendor” (ISAIAH 23:9). Tyre fell because of its pride.

Working hard to create new things is one way we reflect God’s image. But beware the fatal trap of pride. Whatever we do, let’s do it for our eternal God and in His strength. He promises us “a kingdom that cannot be shaken” (HEBREWS 12:28).

하나님의 긍휼

나는 동료 새디를 별로 좋아하지 않았습니다. 나를 종종 무례하게 대하는 새디를 일부러 피해다녔습니다. 그래서 새디가 내가 다니는 교회에서 열리는 전도집회 소식을 듣고 자기도 함께 갈 수 있는지 물었을 때, 나는 심드렁하게 “상황봐서요”라며 얼버무렸습니다.

며칠이 지났고 그 일은 잊힌 듯 했지만 하나님은 잊지 않으셨습니다. 나는 새디에게 손 내밀기를 기다리며 지켜보시는 하나님의 시선을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 어느 날 기도를 하는데 내 머릿 속에 한가지 질문이 맴돌았습니다. ‘네가 새디에게 한 대답을 생각해 보아라. 그 말이 과연 옳으냐?’

아차! 싶었습니다. 이 질문은 니느웨 사람들이 회개한 후 하나님께서 선지자 요나에게 하신 말씀을 떠올리게 했습니다. “네가 성내는 것이 옳으냐?”(요나 4:4). 요나는 니느웨 사람들에게 그들의 죄에 대한 하나님의 심판을 경고했습니다(3:1- 4). 하지만 그들이 회개하고 하나님이 “그들에게 내리리라고 말씀하신 재앙을 내리지” 않으셨을 때(10절), 요나는 이상하게도 “매우 싫어하고 성내며”(4:1) 불만을 품었습니다. 그는 이스라엘에게 잔혹했던 원수들이 너무 쉽게 처벌을 면했다고 생각했고(1-3절), 그들이 응당한 벌을 받아야 한다고 믿었던 것입니다.

그러나 하나님께서는 참된 영적 깨달음이 없었던 니느웨 사람들에 대한 요나의 긍휼없는 마음을 지적하시며 그를 바로잡으셨습니다(5-11절). 하나님 께서는 “은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인애가 크시사”(2 절) 사람들이 과거에 무엇을 했든 상관없이 모든 사람들의 안위를 돌보십니다. 우리도 이같이 사람들에게 하나님의 긍휼을 베풀어, 그들이 하나님을 알고 사랑하도록 도웁시다.

GOD’S COMPASSION

I didn’t like Sadie. My colleague was often rude to me, so I avoided her. So when she heard about an evangelistic meeting in my church and asked if she could go with me, I was indifferent. “I’ll see,” I mumbled.

Days passed, and the topic seemed forgotten. But God hadn’t forgotten. I could feel His gaze, waiting for me to reach out to Sadie. One day, while I was praying, a question pervaded my thoughts: Think about your response to Sadie. Is it right?

Ouch! The question reminded me of what God asked the prophet Jonah after the people of Nineveh repented: “Is it right for you to be angry?” (JONAH 4:4). Jonah had warned the Ninevites of God’s judgment for their sin (3:1-4). Strangely, however, when they repented and God “did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened” (V. 10), “this seemed very wrong” to Jonah “and he became angry” (4:1). He believed that the cruel enemies of Israel had gotten off easily (VV. 1-3) and deserved punishment.

But God corrected Jonah, pointing out his lack of compassion for the Ninevites, who had no true spiritual understanding (VV. 5-11). God, “gracious and compassionate . . . slow to anger and abounding in love” (V. 2), cares about the welfare of all people, no matter what they’ve done. Let’s extend God’s compassion to others too—helping them to know and love Him.

그리스도의 재림을 준비하라

어느 늦가을, 아내와 자동차 여행을 떠날 예정이었습니다. 그런데 출발 전 날 눈이 내리기 시작하는 것을 보고 그제야 겨울용 타이어로 바꾸어 끼지 않았다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 눈이 오고 날씨가 나빠진 탓에 타이어 가게 앞에는 긴 줄이 늘어서 있었습니다. 미리 계획을 잘 세웠더라면 충분히 피할 수 있는 일이었습니다.

우리 인생의 상당 부분은 준비하는 과정이라 할 수 있습니다. 미리 생각하고 발생 가능한 모든 상황에 대비하며, 계획을 잘 세웠는지 확인하는 것은 매우 중요합니다.

우리의 영적 삶도 이와 같습니다. 마태복음 24장에서 예수님은 훗날 다시 오리라 말씀하시며 그것에 잘 대비해야 한다고 하셨습니다. 예수님은 말씀을 듣는 자들에게 자신이 다시 오실 것이므로 반드시 “준비하고 있으라” 고 하셨습니다(44절). 또한 베드로도 믿는 사람들에게 지적으로나 영적으로 준비하여 “너희 속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 묻는 자에게는 대답할 것을 항상 준비”하라고 권면했습니다(베드로전서 3:15).

우리의 삶은 준비하는 삶이 되어야 합니다. 먼저 예수님의 재림을 믿음으로 준비해야 합니다. 다음으로는 “선을 행함으로 고난”을 받게 될지라도(17절) 주님을 섬기기 위해 끊임없이 자신을 준비시켜야 합니다. 우리 모두 주님의 도우심을 구하며 늘 깨어 준비합시다.

READY FOR CHRIST’S RETURN

It was late fall, and my wife and I were going to take a trip by car. The day before our planned departure, it began to snow, and I suddenly realized I hadn’t taken the car in to have snow tires put on. The snowy, deteriorating conditions led to a long line at the tire shop—something I could have avoided with better planning.

Much of life is about getting ready, isn’t it? It’s vital for us to think ahead, prepare for what eventualities might occur, and make sure we’ve planned well.

This is true of our spiritual life as well. In Matthew 24, Jesus pointed out the necessity of being all set for His later return. He told His listeners that they “must be ready” because He will come again (V. 44). And Peter later wrote that believers should prepare themselves ahead of time intellectually and spiritually “to give the reason for the hope that [they] have” (1 PETER 3:15).

Our lives should be ones of preparation. First, we must make sure we’re ready for Jesus’ return by putting our faith in Him. Next, our task is to continually prepare ourselves for service for Him—even if it means to “suffer for doing good” (V. 17). With His help, let’s get ready.

희망을 찾아서

오랫동안 인터넷에서 가장 많이 검색되고 있는 단어 중 하나는 ‘희망’ 입니다. 놀랍게도 이 단어는 정치적 위기나 온라인으로 돈 버는 방법보다 더 많이 검색됩니다. 사람들은 삶의 더 깊은 의미를 찾고 있습니다. 최근 몇 년은 우리에게 낙관적인 전망을 갖게 해주지 못했습니다. 환경에 대한 두려움, 불확실한 경제, 디지털 시대의 불안감이 뉴스와 우리 마음을 지배하며, 마치 슬로우 모션으로 진행되는 끊임없는 위기처럼 느껴졌습니다. 그러나 이 모든 어려움 속에서도 수많은 사람들이 혼돈 너머에 있는 무언가에 구명줄을 던지듯 검색창에 ‘희망’이라는 단어를 입력합니다.

바울은 하나님이 바로 그 혼란 너머에 계신 ‘분’임을 알고 있었습니다. 바울 사도가 “소망의 하나님”(로마서 15:13)에 대해 기록했을 때, 그는 로마의 예수 믿는 사람들이 하나님이 소망의 ‘근원’이자 ‘대상’이심을 깨닫기를 원했습니다. 바울은 참된 소망이란 단순히 막연한 기대나 일시적인 낙관이 아니라 하나님의 성품과 신실하심에 단단히 닻을 내리고 있음을 일깨웁니다. 그리고 하나님은 약속을 통해 우리 마음에 확신을 심어 주십니다. 또한 성령의 권능으로 “인내와 위로”(5절)를 주십니다. 이 소망은 우리의 상황에 관계없이, 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 자녀가 된 것을 깨닫을 때 우리를 기쁨과 평강으로 채워줍니다(7절).

SEARCHING FOR HOPE

For many years, hope has been one of the most searched terms on the internet. Surprisingly, it surpasses searches for political crises and even making money online. People are seeking more profound meaning. Recent years haven’t fostered optimism; instead, they’ve felt like an ongoing, slow-motion crisis: Environmental fears, economic instability, and digital anxiety dominate our headlines and hearts. Yet, through all these struggles, millions type hope into their browsers, as if throwing a lifeline to something beyond the chaos.

Paul understood that God is the Someone beyond the chaos. When the apostle wrote of “the God of hope” (ROMANS 15:13), he wanted Roman believers in Jesus to understand that God was both the source and object of their hope. Paul reminds us that true hope isn’t merely wishful thinking or fleeting optimism; it’s anchored in God’s character and faithfulness. And He instills confidence in us through His promises. He’s also the one who provides “endurance and encouragement” (V. 5) through the power of His Holy Spirit. This hope endures despite circumstances, filling us with joy and peace as we recognize God has accepted us in Christ (V. 7).

If you’re searching for hope, direct your heart toward God. As you trust in His promises and embrace His faithfulness, you can have eternal hope found in Him alone.

하나님이 빚으시는 삶

애쉬튼이 닉을 처음 만났을 때 자기는 목적없이 방황하고 있고 스스로 보아도 자랑할 것 없는 삶을 살고있다고 자신을 소개했습니다. 닉 역시 근래 비슷한 경험을 하는 과정에서 신앙을 회복한 상태였습니다. 그는 애쉬튼에게 그 힘든 시기에 사랑의 토기장이이신 하나님께서 어떻게 자신의 삶을 다시 빚어주시고 희망을 주셨는지 나누었습니다. 두 사람은 결국 부부가 되었고 취미로 도예를 시작했습니다. 지금은 도예 교실을 운영하며 수강생들에게 “여러분은 특별하며 분명한 목적을 위해 창조되었습니다”라고 격려합니다.

하나님께서는 선지자 예레미야에게 말씀하실 때 자신을 토기장이에 비유하시며, 토기장이가 흠이 있는 그릇을 “자기의 선한 뜻대로” 새 그릇으로 다시 빚는 모습을 지켜보라고 하셨습니다(예레미야 18:4). 하나님은 이스라엘 백성이 그분의 말씀을 어떻게 따르는지를 보아 심을 수도 있고 뽑아낼 수도 있다고 하셨는데 이는 곧 빚으시고 다시 빚으시는 그분의 능력을 선지자에게 말씀하신 것입니다. 하나님은 예레미아에게 이스라엘을 향한 회개와 희망의 메시지, “이스라엘 족속아 이 토기장이가 하는 것 같이 내가 능히 너희에게 행하지 못하겠느냐”(6절)라는 말씀을 주셨습니다.

예레미야의 메시지는 이스라엘 민족에게 향한 것이었지만 그 원칙은 우리 각자의 삶에도 똑같이 적용됩니다. 우리의 생각과 행동이 하나님의 진리에서 벗어나 방황할 때 토기장이이신 하나님께 나아가 도움을 구할 수 있습니다. 우리가 잘못을 인정하고 삶의 방향을 바꾸기 위해 하나님의 인도하심과 지혜를 구할 때, 우리는 그분이 사랑의 손길로 우리를 새롭게 빚어 주실 것을 온전히 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

LIVES MOLDED BY GOD

When Asheton met Nick, she described herself as lost, lacking purpose, and behaving in ways she wasn’t proud of. Nick had recently experienced something similar and had reconnected with his faith in the process. He shared with Asheton how viewing God as a loving potter who had reshaped his life and given him hope in that difficult time. The two eventually married and took up pottery as a hobby. Now they offer pottery classes and encourage the attendees that “they’re special and created for a purpose.”

God likened Himself to a potter when communicating with the prophet Jeremiah, instructing him to observe the way a potter reshaped marred pots into new pots “as seemed best to him” (JEREMIAH 18:4). God revealed to the prophet His ability to shape and reshape the Israelites—either planting or uprooting them according to their response to His counsel. He endowed Jeremiah with a message of repentance and hope for them that He can “do with you, Israel, as this potter does” (V. 6).

Jeremiah’s message was proclaimed to the nation of Israel, but the principle applies to our individual lives as well. When we find ourselves wandering from God’s truth in our thoughts and actions, we can turn to the Potter for help. When we admit our wrongdoings and ask Him for guidance and wisdom to change our ways, we can trust Him to reshape us with His loving hands.
