그리스도로 통한다

젊은 기자 시절 나는 “언론인 출입증”이 얼마나 힘이 큰지 일찍 알았습니다. 나의 이름과 사진과 소속 언론사를 보여주는 그 증명서 하나만 있으면 큰 행사 전후에 운동선수들이나 유명인사들을 만나 인터뷰를 할 수 있었기 때문입니다.

그러나 예수님을 나의 구주로 영접하고는 스포츠와 직업이 내 삶의 우상이 된 것을 깨달았습니다. 나는 하나님의 부르심을 따라 다른 길을 택하게 되면서 언론인 출입증을 반납해야 했습니다. 그대신 예수님의 대속의 죽음과 부활 덕분에 기도를 통해 하나님의 하늘 보좌에 나아갈 수 있는 특권을 얻었습니다.

히브리서의 저자는 이스라엘 백성 가운데 대제사장이 선택되었으며, 특별히 아론의 후손 중에서 하나님 앞에서 백성을 대표하는 중재자로 임명되었다고 말합니다. 대제사장은 일 년에 한 번 홀로 성소 안의 지성소에 들어가 “예물과 제사를 드려” 자신의 죄와 백성들의 죄를 속죄해야 했습니다(5:1). 그도 역시 죽을 수 밖에 없는 한 인간이었기 때문입니다.

그러나 우리의 위대하고 완전한 대제사장 예수님이 오셨습니다. 그분이 돌아가시면서 성전의 휘장이 찢어져 하나님과 인간 사이에 있던 장벽이 제거 됐습니다(마태복음 27:51).

우리 사랑의 구세주께서 우리를 하나님 아버지와 화목하게 하심으로 우리는 자유롭게 하나님께 기도할 수 있습니다. “그러므로 우리는 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라”(히브리서 4:16).

기도를 통해 하나님과 대화할 때 그의 보좌로 나아갈 수 있는 것이 얼마나 큰 특권인지 모릅니다.

ACCESS THROUGH CHRIST

As a young journalist, I quickly learned about the power of a “press pass.” That one credential—displaying my name, picture, and media outlet—granted me access to meet and interview athletes and celebrities before or after major events.

However, after I received Jesus as my Savior, I realized sports and my career had become my idols. Following God’s call elsewhere, I lost my press pass but gained access to God’s heavenly throne room through prayer because of Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection.

The writer of Hebrews points out that a high priest was selected from among the Israelites, specifically one of Aaron’s descendants, and appointed as the go-between representing the people before God. He alone could enter the Most Holy Place in the temple once a year “to offer gifts and sacrifice” to atone for his and the people’s sins (5:1), for he too was a mortal man.

Then Christ came, our great and perfect high priest. When He died, the veil in the temple was torn and the barrier that existed between God and humanity was removed (MATTHEW 27:51).

Because our loving Redeemer has reconciled us to His Father, we can freely pray to God: “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (HEBREWS 4:16).

What a privilege to have access to God’s throne room as we talk to Him in prayer.

절박한 사람의 기도

찰스는 우울증에 빠졌습니다. 사랑하는 가족이 있어도 외로웠습니다. 그는 “가족 부양의 압박감이 계속 커지면서 죽고 싶다는 생각까지 들었다” 고 했습니다. 믿기 어렵겠지만 찰스 모리스는 기독교 목회자였습니다. 한 지혜 많은 친구가 그에게 이렇게 조언했습니다. “우울증이 찾아오면 시편을 깊이 묵상해야 해.” 찰스는 자신의 감정을 그대로 담은 듯한 성경 말씀을 읽고서 적절한 치료를 받으며 하나님께 마음을 쏟아 놓으면서 깊은 절망에서 벗어날 수 있었습니다.

시편은 종종 잔인할 정도로 솔직합니다. 에스라 사람 헤만은 그 중에서도 가장 쓰라린 고통을 적었습니다. “여호와 내 구원의 하나님이여”(88:1) 하며 첫 구절에만 희망을 담았을 뿐, 이후 헤만은 하나님을 원망하듯 외칩니다. “주께서 나를 깊은 웅덩이에 던지셨습니다”(6절). “주께서 나를 괴롭게 하셨습니다”(7절). 그리고 그는 묻습니다. “여호와여 어찌하여 나의 영혼을 버리시며 어찌하여 주의 얼굴을 내게서 숨기시나이까?”(14절). 대부분의 시편은 희망의 메시지로 끝나지만 이 장은 그렇지 않습니다. 헤만은 이렇게 마칩니다. “내가 아는 자를 흑암에 두셨나이다”(18절). 이것이야말로 절박한 사람의 기도입니다. 그러나 헤만은 모든 아픔을 하나님께 직접 쏟아놓았습니다.

이같은 시편을 읽을 때 우리는 우리만 그러는게 아니라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 다른 사람들도 절망을 경험했고, 그 감정을 담대히 말로 표현했던 것입니다. 하나님은 헤만의 솔직한 마음을 받아주셨습니다. 그리고 우리들의 외침도 들으실 것입니다. 하나님은 언제나 우리 옆에서 귀 기울이십니다.

PRAYER OF THE DESPERATE

Charles had sunk into depression. Despite having a loving family, he felt all alone. “The overwhelming pressure of supporting them was continuing to build,” he said, “and I felt like taking my own life.” Surprisingly—or perhaps not—Charles Morris also led a Christian ministry.

A wise friend told him that when faced with depression, “We should soak in the Psalms.” Charles got through his deep despondency by reading relatable Bible passages, accepting prudent medical care, and pouring his heart out to God.

The Psalms are often brutally honest. Heman the Ezrahite wrote one of the most bitter. Hope is found only in the opening lines: “Lord, you are the God who saves me” (88:1). Heman seems to accuse God: “You have put me in the lowest pit” (V. 6). “You have overwhelmed me” (V. 7). And he had questions: “Why, Lord, do you reject me and hide your face from me?” (V. 14). Most psalms end with a message of hope. Not this one. Heman concludes, “Darkness is my closest friend” (V. 18). This is the prayer of a truly desperate man. Yet Heman directed all his pain to God.

When we read psalms such as this one, we realize we’re not alone. Others have experienced desperate feelings and have dared to put voice to them. God could take such honesty from Heman. He can take it from you too. He’s there, and He’s listening.

교훈적인 이야기

고전 영화 ‘시민 케인’에서 찰스 포스터 케인은 언론 재벌을 이루어 부와 권력을 쌓았습니다. 전도서 2:4-11을 회상하게 하는 이 이야기에서 케인은 온갖 예술 작품으로 가득한 거대한 정원이 있는 저택을 지으며 모든 쾌락을 누렸습니다.

다른 재벌들과 마찬가지로, 케인이 진정 원했던 것은 높임을 받는 것 이었습니다. 그는 자신의 정치 활동에 막대한 돈을 쏟아 부었지만 선거에 패배 하자, 체면을 세우려고 낙선을 “부정 선거” 탓으로 돌렸습니다. 또한 남들에게 멋지게 보이려고 아내에게 오페라 극장을 지어주고 아내에게 맞지도 않는 성악가의 길을 걷게 했습니다. 케인의 이런 일대기도 부를 쫓고 소유하는 사람은 해를 당하고(9:10-15), “일평생을 어두운 데에서 먹으며 많은 근심”(5:17) 속에 살게 된다는 전도서와 상통합니다. 결국 찰스 케인은 자신의 성에서 주위에 아무도 없이 외롭게, 분노 속에 생을 마감합니다.

영화 ‘시민 케인’은 찰스의 모든 욕망이 어린 시절 받지 못한 부모의 사랑 에서 비롯되었음을 드러내며 끝이 납니다. 아마도 전도서의 저자 역시 이에 공감할 것 같습니다. 하나님께서는 우리의 마음 속에 “영원을 사모하는 마음”을 두셨으며(3:11), 삶의 참된 기쁨은 오직 하나님과 함께할 때에만 누릴 수 있습니다 (2:25). 찰스 케인의 이야기는 영적 만족을 부와 권력에서 찾지 말고, 우리의 마음에 사랑을 부어 주시는 하나님으로부터 찾으라는 교훈을 줍니다(로마서 5:5).

A CAUTIONARY TALE

In the classic film Citizen Kane, Charles Foster Kane amasses wealth and power by building a newspaper empire. In a story reminiscent of Ecclesiastes 2:4-11, Kane spares himself no pleasure, building a castle with grand gardens full of artistic treasures.

Like other tycoons, what Kane really wants is adulation. He bankrolls his own political career and, when it fails, he blames the defeat on voter “fraud” to save face. He builds his wife an opera house and forces her into an ill-suited singing career to make him look good. Here too Kane’s story echoes Ecclesiastes, where wealth is found to harm those who chase and horde it (9:10-15), leaving them eating “in darkness, with great frustration” (5:17). By the end of his life, Charlie Kane lives in that castle alone, isolated and angry.

Citizen Kane ends with the revelation that Charlie’s pursuits have been driven to fill a void in his heart—the parental love he lost as a child. I can imagine the author of Ecclesiastes agreeing. Our Father God has “set eternity in the human heart” (3:11), and life can only be enjoyed with Him (2:25). Charlie Kane’s cautionary tale speaks to us all: Don’t seek spiritual fulfilment through wealth and power, but through the one who pours His love into our hearts (ROMANS 5:5).

1997년에 아이오와 주립대학교는 미식축구 경기장의 이름을 학교 최초의 흑인 선수였던 잭 트라이스로 정했습니다. 안타깝게도 트라이스는 정작 아이오와주 에임스에서는 단 한 경기도 뛰지 못했습니다. 그는 미네소타주의 미니애폴리스에서 1923년 10월 6일에 열린 그의 두 번째 대학 경기에서 입은 내상으로 세상을 떠났던 것입니다.

경기 전날 밤, 트라이스는 다음과 같이 자신의 각오를 담은 글을 남겼습니다.

“나의 인종과 가족과 내 명예가 걸려있다. 내가 큰 일을 해내길 모두가 기대하고 있다. 반드시 해낼 것이다! 온몸과 영혼을 내일 경기장에 던질 것이다. 매 순간마다 나는 내가 맡은 것 이상을 해낼 것이다.” 트라이스는 자신이 하는 일이 자신의 명예와 품격에서 나온다는 것을 깊이 이해했으며, 그것이 그의 성품에 용기를 불어넣었습니다.

JESUS’ WORK

In 1997, Iowa State University named its football stadium after the school’s first black athlete: Jack Trice. Tragically, Trice had never even played in Ames, Iowa—he died from internal injuries sustained during a play in his second college game, played in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 6, 1923.

Trice wrote a note to himself the night before the game, bearing witness to his determination:

“The honor of my race, family, and self are at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will! My whole body and soul are to be thrown recklessly about on the field tomorrow. Every time the ball is snapped, I will be trying to do more than my part.” Trice profoundly understood that what he did flowed from the honor and dignity of who he was, infusing his character with courage.

The apostle Paul says something similar in his letter to the Ephesians, challenging believers to let who they were in Christ influence every decision: “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received” (EPHESIANS 4:1). Paul challenges us to embrace a way of living shaped by Jesus’ work for us, in us, and through us, which yields humility, gentleness, patience, unity, love and peace (VV. 2-3) as we use our Godgiven gifts to serve one another (VV. 15-16).

하나님께서 하실 일

1940년 12월 29일, 런던 대공습으로 세인트 폴 대성당 가까운 곳의 한 창고가 파괴되었습니다. 비디 챔버스는 자신이 직접 편집한 오스왈드 챔버스의 책 4만 부가 모두 소실되었다는 소식을 들었습니다. 책은 아직 보험에 가입되지 않은 상태였습니다. 그 부인은 찻잔을 내려놓고 딸에게 말했습니다. “그래, 하나님께서 이 책을 그분의 영광을 위해 사용해 오셨지만, 이것이 끝인가 보다. 이제 하나님께서 어떤 일을 하실지 기다려 보자.”

비디는 아마도 고인이 된 남편 오스왈드가 1차 세계 대전이 시작될 무렵 남긴 글을 떠올렸을지도 모릅니다. 오스왈드는 예수님께서 제자들에게 “위험은 피할 수 없는 것”이고, 끔찍한 일이 닥쳐도 주께서 함께 하시니 “두려워하지 말라”고 말씀하신 내용을 글로 남겼습니다.

예수님이 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하나 담대하라 내가 세상을 이기었노라”(요한복음 16:33). 제자들이 하나님 아버지를 믿는 믿음을 굳게 가져 다가올 시험과 어려움을 견디기를 예수님은 원하셨습니다.

비디는 묵묵히 하나님을 신뢰하며 견뎌냈습니다. 그리고 책들은 다시 출판 되어 세대를 지나며 읽히는 고전이 되었습니다. 우리도 세상을 이기신 예수님의 약속 안에서 위로와 희망을 찾을 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리를 결코 떠나지 않으시며(14:18) 어떤 상황에서도 평안을 주실 것입니다(27절).

WHAT GOD WILL DO

During the Blitz on London on December 29, 1940, a bomb destroyed a warehouse near St. Paul’s Cathedral. When Biddy Chambers received the news that all 40,000 copies of Oswald Chambers’ books stored there were lost—which she had compiled and edited but not insured—she set down her teacup and remarked to her daughter, “Well, God has used the books for His glory, but now that is over. We’ll wait and see what God will do now.”

Perhaps Biddy was remembering what her late husband, Oswald, had written at the start of the First World War. He noted how Jesus had spoken to His disciples about “the inevitability of peril” so that when horrible things happened, they would “not be scared” because He was with them.

Jesus told His friends, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (JOHN 16:33). He wanted them to remain strong in their faith in His Father so they could withstand the trials and challenges they would endure.

Biddy’s quiet confidence in God carried her through, and eventually the books were reprinted and became classics for generations. We too can find encouragement and hope in Jesus’ promises that He has overcome the world. We know that He won’t leave us (14:18) and will give us peace (V. 27), no matter what we face.

타인에게 자리를 내어주기

미국 전역에 있는 전기차 충전소에는 차량들이 빠르게 충전하고 다시 달릴 수 있도록 마련한 “급속 충전기”들이 있는데 어떤 운전자들은 필요 이상으로 오래 차를 그곳에 세워두곤 합니다. 이러한 배려 없는 행동을 해결하기 위해 한 대형 충전 업체는 붐비는 충전소 몇 군데에 시간제한제를 도입했습니다. 배터리가 85퍼센트까지 충전되면 다음 차들을 위해 자리를 양보하라는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 예수님을 믿는 성도들에게 겸손한 마음으로 “자기보다 남을 낫게 여기라”(빌립보서 2:3)고 권면했습니다. 그는 당시 빌립보 교회에 퍼져있던 자기중심적 태도를 지적했습니다. 그들은 선한 동기가 아닌 “허영심”(3절)으로 사람의 인정과 주목을 받으려 했습니다. 바울은 성도들에게 그리스도의 마음으로 “다른 사람들의 일”(4절)을 돌보라고 했습니다. 이는 자신의 필요를 무조건 희생하라는 의미가 아니라, “그리스도의 마음”으로 타인의 필요를 함께 돌보는 것을 뜻합니다(5절). 바울 사도는 빌립보 성도들에게 교만을 내려놓고 겸손히 다른 이들을 위해 자리를 내줄 것을 권면했던 것입니다. 그렇게 하는 궁극적인 이유는 바로 사랑입니다.

우리가 매일 그리스도의 본을 따라 살려고 할 때(6-11절), 예수님은 우리가 그의 사랑의 눈으로 다른 이들을 바라봄으로써 그들에게 자리를 내어주도록 도와주실 것입니다.

MAKING ROOM FOR OTHERS

At electric vehicle charging stations across the United States, some drivers overstay their time at “fast-chargers,” which are designed to help drivers quickly charge their cars and get back on the road. To resolve this unkind behavior, one of the largest charging networks has implemented strict time limits at some of its busiest stations. When a vehicle’s battery charge reaches 85 percent, the driver must make room for the next car in need of a charge.

The apostle Paul encouraged believers in Jesus to humbly “value others above [themselves]” (PHILIPPIANS 2:3). He addressed an issue that was grating the Philippian church—self-centeredness. The people desired recognition and distinction, not from pure motives but from “selfish ambition” (V. 3). Paul urged the believers to have the mind of Christ and to look “to the interests of the others” (V. 4). This didn’t mean that they should forget their own needs in an unhealthy way, but that they would care for others’ needs as those who “have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (V. 5). The apostle encouraged the Philippians to empty themselves of pride and to humbly make room for others. The ultimate motivation for making room? Love.

As we seek to imitate Christ’s example each day (VV. 6-11), He can help us make room for others by viewing them with His loving eyes.

함께 아파하기

나는 약지를 다치고 완전히 나을 때까지 몇 달은 통증이 있을 것이라 생각 했습니다. 그런데 처방 받은 대로 재활운동을 하다 바로 옆 손가락에도 통증이 생겨 의사를 찾았습니다. 의사는 “공감 통증”이라고 했습니다. 약지와 새끼손가락의 신경이 서로 연결되어 있어서 서로 영향을 준다는 것입니다. 한 손가락이 아프면 옆의 손가락도 함께 통증을 느낀다는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 하나님의 백성이 연합하는 특징을 설명하기 위해 사람의 몸을 예로 들었습니다. 고린도전서 12:21-26에서 그는 각 지체가 한 건강한 몸을 이루는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 강조합니다. 이어서 성도가 서로 연결되는 연합에 대해 “만일 한 지체가 고통을 받으면 모든 지체가 고통을 받는다”(26절)고 말합니다. 바울은 상호 연합에 대해 다른 구절에서도 말합니다. “우는 자들과 함께 울고”(로마서 12:15), “너희가 짐을 서로 지라”(갈라디아서 6:2).

지금도 손을 들어 인사를 하거나 손님에게 대접할 식사를 준비하며 스푼을 잡을 때 나는 약지와 새끼손가락이 함께 아픈 것을 느낍니다. 우리의 몸은 서로 협력하여 아픔을 표현하고 회복을 위해 서로를 돕습니다. 교회라는 영적 공동체 안에서 우리가 고통에 함께 공감하며 서로 연결되어야 함을 알게 해 주신 하나님께 감사 드립니다.

SYMPATHY PAIN

When I injured my ring finger, I expected months of pain before regaining its full function. As I practiced the prescribed exercises, the finger next to it began to throb, so I consulted my doctor. “Sympathy pain,” he said. A branching between the nerves of the ring and pinky fingers causes dependence on one another. If one finger hurts, the other aches in sympathy.

The apostle Paul uses the human body to illustrate the uniqueness and unity of God’s people. In 1 Corinthians 12:21-26, he reinforces how valuable each individual member is to the healthy functioning of the whole. Then he turns his attention to the unity achieved when we connect with each other. “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it” (V. 26). His description of the church’s interconnectedness is echoed in these verses, as we ought to “mourn with those who mourn,” and “carry each other’s burdens” (ROMANS 12:15; GALATIANS 6:2).

Today, as I extend my hand to greet someone or grab a spoon to prepare a meal for guests, I notice the strain in both my ring finger and my pinky. The various parts of our physical bodies work together to express pain and to strengthen each other toward health. I thank God that He reveals our need for connection to each other in His spiritual body, the church, through sympathy pain.

이주하시는 구원자

1947년 영국령 인도제국이 해체되면서, 1,500만 명이 넘는 사람들이 종교적인 이유로 이주했습니다. 그러나 장마로 인한 홍수와 질병의 확산으로 이주민의 어려움은 더욱 심해져 백만 명이 넘는 난민이 사망 했습니다.

역사적으로, 인류는 자유와 안전, 혹은 더 나은 삶을 찾아 이주해 왔습니다. 이동에 대한 강렬한 욕구는 인류의 경험에 깊이 배어 있습니다. 성경에서 가장 잘 알려진 예는 히브리인들이 출애굽하여 약속의 땅으로 향하는 이야기입니다. 이주해야 하는 삶은 예수님께도 예외가 아니었습니다. 예수님의 부모는 헤롯 왕의 학살로부터 아기 예수의 생명을 지키기 위해 이집트로 피신했습니다. 이 일이 아이러니한 것은, 이스라엘 백성은 남자 아기들을 학살했던 왕(출애굽기 1:16)을 피해 약속의 땅으로 향했는데(3:17), 요셉은 같은 일을 저지르는 폭군 헤롯을 피해 아기 예수와 “그의 어머니를 데리고 이집트로 도망쳐야” 했던 것입니다(마태복음 2:13; 16-18절 참조).

A MIGRATING SAVIOR

In 1947, with the dissolution of the British Indian Empire, more than 15 million people migrated for religious reasons. The upheaval was worsened by monsoon flooding and the spread of disease. More than a million refugees died.

Throughout history, people have migrated—seeking freedom, safety, or a better life. The urge to move is ingrained in the human experience. The most famous example in Scripture is the exodus story of the Hebrews to the promised land. Migration wasn’t foreign to Jesus either. As a young baby, His parents fled to Egypt to protect His life from the murderous Herod. It’s ironic that, just as the Israelites fled to the promised land (EXODUS 3:17) to get away from a king who killed young boys (1:16), Joseph is told to take Jesus “and his mother and escape to Egypt” to flee a tyrant who did the same (MATTHEW 2:13; SEE VV. 16-18).

Matthew tells us this journey was to fulfill the prophecy in Hosea 11:1 that “out of Egypt I called my son” (MATTHEW 2:15). But it’s also a reminder that Christ understands the human experience (HEBREWS 4:15). We have a Savior who knows us and has experienced the same kinds of trials and tribulations we have. We can seek Him in our difficult moments. He listens and intercedes on our behalf (HEBREWS 4:14-16).

예수님을 보여주는 삶

캠프의 첫째 날, 앨런이 청소년들에게 기업 경영적 기술들에 관해 가르치고 있을 때 한 학생이 “선생님은 그리스도인이시죠? 전 알 수 있어요.”라고 말했습니다. 앨런이 스스로를 그리스도인이라고 말하기 전이고, 평소에 좋아하는 기독교 심볼 문양의 양말과 넥타이도 매지 않았지만 그 학생은 앨런의 언어, 행동과 태도에서 예수님의 모습을 봤다고 말했습니다. 그들은 어디서든 어떻게 하면 예수님을 더 잘 나타낼 수 있을지 이야기를 나누었습니다.

그리스도인임을 밝히고 기독교 메시지가 있는 옷을 입는 것은 좋은 일 입니다. 그러나 성경은 복음을 전할 때 서로 사랑하는 삶의 모습이야말로 예수님을 따르는 성도의 정체성을 진정 보여주는 것이라고 가르쳐 줍니다. 바울 사도와 고린도 성도들은 영생을 믿는 믿음으로 살며 다른 이들에게도 예수님을 전함으로 하나님을 기쁘시게 하려는 강한 의지와 추진력을 보여주었습니다 (고린도후서 5:9-14).

우리가 우리 자신보다 그리스도를 위해 살기로 작정할 때, 성령님께서 우리의 생각과 성품, 우선순위, 다른 사람들을 대하는 방식들을 바꾸어 주십니다 (15-17절). 예수님 안에서 새로워진 우리의 삶은 “하나님이 우리를 통하여 권면하시는 것 같이”(20절) 예수님을 드러내면서 다른 사람들을 하나님께로 인도하기 위한 것입니다.

우리가 성령님의 능력을 힘입으면 어디서나 그리스도를 드러내는 기쁨과 책임을 누리게 됩니다.

REPRESENTING JESUS

On the first day of a camp where Alan teaches teens entrepreneurial skills, a student said, “You’re a Christian, aren’t you? I can tell.” Before Alan said he was a Christian or wore his favorite socks and ties decorated with Christian symbols, the teen said he saw Jesus through Alan’s words, actions, and attitude. They discussed how they could better represent Jesus wherever they go.

Saying we’re Christian and wearing clothes with Christian messages are good things. However, the Bible teaches that the way we live and love as we share the gospel is the true identifier of those who follow Jesus. The apostle Paul and the other believers in Corinth were compelled, or driven, to please God by living with an eternal perspective while sharing Him with others (2 CORINTHIANS 5:9-14).

When we’re committed to living for Christ instead of for ourselves, the Holy Spirit changes our perspective, character, priorities, and ways of interacting with others (VV. 15-17). Our new life in Jesus is intended to represent Him while we point others to Him, “as though God were making his appeal through us” (V. 20).

Empowered by the Spirit, we’re given the joy and responsibility of representing Christ wherever we go.

하나님 안에서 배우는 자세

고등학생 시절 임신한 것을 안 캣은 학교를 중퇴하고 딸을 키웠습니다. 그리고15년 후 세 아이를 키우며 일하는 엄마가 된 캣은 전문 미용사가 되는 꿈을 가지고 있었습니다. 그녀는 겸손과 끈기로 무료 검정고시 지원 프로그램에 등록하여 다시 학생이 되었습니다. 아주 오랜만에 학교로 돌아가니 감회가 새로웠습니다. 캣은 말합니다. “이 프로그램으로 제 삶이 바뀌었어요! 정말 좋은 선생님한테서 많은 격려를 받았어요.”

계속해서 배우는 자세를 갖는 것은 우리가 할 수 있는 아주 힘든 일 중의 하나입니다. 성경은 하나님의 지혜를 받아들이려는 배움의 자세에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 잠언은 지혜로운 여인과 어리석은 여인이 행인에게 외치는 모습을 묘사합니다(잠언 9:1-6; 13-18). 지혜의 목소리에 귀를 기울이는 사람들은 교훈을 감사히 받아들이면서 “학식이 더하고” 지혜가 늘어납니다(9절). 그들은 언제나 “명철의 길을 행하며”(6절) 지혜의 식탁에 앉아 가르침을 받습니다. 그리고 순종함으로 풍성한 삶을 누립니다(11절). 반면에 어리석은 소리에 귀 기울이는 사람은 잘못을 고쳐주거나 비판받기를 싫어합니다. 그들은 자신을 가르치려는 사람을 욕되게 합니다(7-8절). 겸손은 하나님은 “거룩하신 분”이고 우리는 그렇지 않다는 것을 인정하는 경외심에서 비롯됩니다(10절). 배우는 자세를 유지하는 것은 쉽지 않으나, 그런 자세는 우리가 모든 것을 알지 못하며 여전히 도움이 필요하다는 사실을 순순히 인정하게 해줍니다. 지혜가 우리를 부르고 있습니다. 우리는 어떻게 반응해야 할까요?

REMAINING TEACHABLE IN GOD

After Kat learned she was pregnant, she dropped out of high school to care for her daughter. Fifteen years later, Kat was a working mother of three who dreamed of becoming a licensed beautician. With humility and tenacity, she became a student again in a free GED support program. It was humbling to go back to school after so long. “This program changed my life!” Kat said. “My teacher was amazing and offered so much encouragement.”

Remaining teachable may be one of the most difficult things we can do. The Bible speaks of having a teachable heart that’s open to God’s wisdom. The poetry of Proverbs paints a picture of two women calling out to passersby—Wisdom and Folly (PROVERBS 9:1-6; 13-18). Those who listen to Wisdom receive correction with grace. They “add to their learning” and become even wiser (V. 9). They habitually “walk in the way of insight” (V. 6) and seat themselves at Wisdom’s table for instruction. Their obedience leads to a full life (V. 11). In contrast, those who listen to Folly hate being corrected or criticized. They insult anyone who tries to instruct them (VV. 7-8). Humility comes from fearing God—acknowledging that He’s “the Holy One” and we are not (V. 10). It’s not easy to stay teachable, but it also brings freedom to admit we don’t know it all and we still need help. Wisdom calls to us. How will we respond?
