가족은 소중한 것

언니와 오빠, 그리고 나는 각기 다른 주에서 비행기를 타고 와서 삼촌의 장례식에 참석한 후 90세의 할머니를 만나러 갔습니다. 할머니는 뇌졸중으로 마비가 되어 말을 못하시고 오른손만 사용할 수 있었습니다. 우리가 침대 곁에 둘러서자 할머니는 오른손을 내밀어 우리 각 사람의 손을 잡아 할머니 가슴 위에 서로 포개어 놓고 손으로 다독여 주셨습니다. 이 무언의 동작으로 할머니는 다소 깨지고 소원해진 우리 형제 자매 관계에 대해 이렇게 말씀하신 것입니다. “가족은 소중한 거야.”

하나님의 가족인 교회에서도 우리는 서로 멀어질 수 있으며, 나쁜 감정이 우리를 서로 분리시켜 버릴 수 있습니다. 히브리서 저자는 에서를 그의 동생과 멀어지게 한 아픔을 언급하면서(히브리서 12:16) 하나님의 가족으로 형제자매인 우리는 서로에게 의지함으로 “모든 사람과 더불어 화평하게 지내... 기를 힘쓰라”(14절, 새번역)고 충고합니다. ‘힘쓰다’라는 말은 하나님의 가족인 형제 자매와의 화평을 위해 의도적이고 결단력 있는 투자를 한다는 뜻을 담고 있습니다. 이런 모든 노력은 한 사람 한 사람 모두에게 다 적용되는 말입니다.

가족은 소중합니다. 육신의 가족뿐 아니라 믿음으로 하나님의 가족이 된 사람들 모두가 소중합니다. 우리 모두 서로를 의지하기 위해 필요한 노력에 투자해 보지 않으시겠습니까?

FAMILY MATTERS

My sister, brother, and I flew from our separate states to our uncle’s funeral and stopped to see our ninety-year- old grandmother. She’d been paralyzed by a stroke, had lost the ability to speak, and had only the use of her right hand. As we stood around her bed, she reached out that hand and took each of our hands, placing one atop another over her heart and patted them in place. With this wordless gesture, my grandmother spoke into what had been our somewhat broken and distant sibling relationship. “Family matters.”

In God’s family, the church, we can grow apart as well. We might allow bitterness to separate us from each other. The writer of Hebrews references the bitterness that separated Esau from his brother (HEBREWS 12:16) and challenges us as brothers and sisters to hold on to each other in God’s family. “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone” (V. 14). Here the words every effort convey a deliberate and decisive investment in peacemaking with our brothers and sisters in God’s family. Every such effort is then applied to everyone. Every. One.

Family matters. Both our earthly families and God’s family of believers. Might we all invest the efforts needed to hold on to each other? - ELISA MORGAN

찬양의 계곡

시인 윌리엄 쿠퍼는 인생의 많은 시간을 우울증으로 시달렸습니다. 그는 한 차례 자살을 시도한 후 정신병원에 입원하게 되었는데, 거기서 기독교인인 의사의 보살핌을 받으며 예수님에 대한 따뜻하고 살아 있는 믿음을 갖게 되었습니다. 곧이어 목사이자 찬송가 작가인 존 뉴튼을 알게 된 쿠퍼는 그의 격려를 받고 그들의 교회를 위해 찬송가를 함께 만들기로 했습니다. 쿠퍼의 찬송가 중 “주 하나님 크신 능력”에는 그의 경험에서 우러나오는 이런 가사가 있습니다. “검은 구름 우리들을 뒤덮을지라도 그 자비하신 은혜로 우리를 지키네.”

쿠퍼와 마찬가지로 유다의 백성들도 기대하지 않았던 하나님의 은혜를 경험했습니다. 군대들이 연합해 유다를 침범하자 여호사밧 왕은 백성을 불러모아 기도했습니다. 유다의 군대는 행군을 하며 앞줄에 선 사람들이 하나님을 찬양했습니다(역대하 20:21). 그러자 적군들은 서로를 공격하게 되었고, “한 사람도 피한 자가 없는지라... 탈취하는데 그 물건이 너무 많아... 사흘 동안에 거두어 들였습니다”(24-25절).

넷째 날에 하나님의 백성에 맞서 대적하던 군대가 모였던 바로 그곳 이름을 ‘브라가 골짜기’라고 불렀는데(26절), 이는 문자적으로 “찬양의 계곡” 혹은 “축복”을 의미합니다. 얼마나 멋진 변화인지요! 아무리 힘든 역경의 골짜기라도 하나님께 맡겨드리면 그분의 은혜는 그곳을 찬미의 장소로 바꿀 수 있습니다.

THE VALLEY OF PRAISE

Poet William Cowper struggled with depression much of his life. After a suicide attempt, he was committed to an asylum. But it was there through the care of a Christian physician that Cowper came to a warm, vital faith in Jesus. Soon afterwards, Cowper became acquainted with pastor and hymnwriter John Newton, who encouraged him to collaborate on a hymnal for their church. Among the hymns Cowper wrote was “God Moves in a Mysterious Way,” which contains these words pressed from the crucible of experience: “You fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds you so much dread, are big with mercy and shall break in blessings on your head.”

Like Cowper, the people of Judah also met God’s kindness unexpectedly. As an alliance of armies invaded their nation, King Jehoshaphat gathered the people for prayer. As Judah’s army marched out, men in the front ranks praised God (2 CHRONICLES 20:21). The invading armies turned on themselves, and “no one . . . escaped. . . . There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it” (VV. 24-25).

On the fourth day, the very place where a hostile invading force gathered against God’s people was dubbed the Valley of Berakah (V. 26)— literally, “the valley of praise” or “blessing.” What a change! God’s mercy can turn even our most difficult valleys into places of praise as we give them to Him. - JAMES BANKS

하나님의 부드러운 사랑

어떤 아빠가 2개월 된 아들을 달래며 예방 접종을 맞히는 모습을 찍은 2017년의 한 영상은 자녀를 향한 아버지의 사랑을 잘 담아내 세계인의 관심을 끌었습니다. 간호사가 접종을 마치고 아빠가 아들을 부드럽게 안아 볼에 가까이 대어주자 아기는 몇 초도 안 돼 울음을 그쳤습니다. 사랑하는 부모의 따뜻한 돌봄보다 더 안전한 곳은 없습니다.

성경에는 자녀를 깊이 사랑하는 부모로서의 하나님을 아름답게 묘사한 부분이 많습니다. 구약의 호세아 선지자는 분열된 왕국 시대에 북쪽 왕국에 사는 이스라엘 사람들에게 전할 메시지를 받고 그들에게 하나님께 돌아오라고 선포했습니다. 호세아는 하나님을 부드러운 아버지로 묘사하며 이스라엘 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 이렇게 상기시켰습니다. “이스라엘이 어렸을 때에 내가 사랑하여”(호세아 11:1) “젖먹이처럼 들어올려 볼에 비비기도 하였다” (4절, 공동번역).

이렇게 하나님이 사랑으로 보살피신다는 확실한 약속은 우리에게도 마찬가지로 적용됩니다. 우리가 하나님의 사랑을 한 때 거부한 후에, 또는 삶의 고통과 괴로움 때문에 하나님의 따뜻한 보살핌을 구하면 하나님은 우리를 그의 자녀라 부르시고(요한1서 3:1) 위로의 팔을 내밀어 우리를 받아 주십니다 (고린도후서 1:3-4).

GOD’S TENDER LOVE

A 2017 video of a dad comforting his two-month-old son while the baby received his routine vaccinations garnered international attention for the way it captured a dad’s love for his child. After the nurse finished administering the vaccinations, the dad tenderly held his son close to his cheek, and the boy stopped sobbing within seconds. There’s almost nothing more reassuring than the tender care of a loving parent.

In Scripture, there are many beautiful descriptions of God as a loving parent, images that invoke God’s deep love for His children. Old Testament prophet Hosea was given a message to deliver to the Israelites living in the Northern Kingdom during the time of the divided kingdom. He called them to return to a relationship with God. Hosea reminded the Israelites of God’s love for them as he pictured God as a gentle Father: “when Israel was a child, I loved him” (HOSEA 11:1) and “to them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek” (V. 4).

This same reassuring promise of God’s loving care is true for us. Whether we seek His tender care after a season where we’ve rejected His love or because of pain and suffering in our lives, He calls us His children (1 JOHN 3:1) and His comforting arms are open to receive us (2 CORINTHIANS 1:3-4). - LISA M. 선택이 중요하다

다미안 목사는 각기 다른 삶의 길을 선택하여 이제 죽음을 앞두고 있는 두 사람이 입원해 있는 병원을 찾아갔습니다. 한 병원에는 온 가족이 사랑하는 한 여성이 있었는데, 그녀는 사심없는 사회봉사로 많은 사람들에게 사랑받는 사람이었습니다. 다른 신자들이 그녀 주위에 모여 예배하고 기도할 때 그 방은 소망의 기운으로 가득했습니다. 다른 병원에는 다미안 목사의 교회 성도의 한 친척이 죽음을 앞두고 있었습니다. 그의 완고한 마음은 힘든 삶으로 이어졌고 가족들은 그의 나쁜 선택과 행동의 여파로 흩어져 살았습니다. 상반된 두 분위기는 그들이 각각 어떤 삶을 살았는지를 대조적으로 보여주었습니다.

CHOICES MATTER

Pastor Damian’s schedule included hospital visits to two people nearing death who’d chosen two different life paths. In one hospital was a woman beloved by her family. Her selfless public service had endeared her to many. Other believers in Jesus had gathered around her, and worship, prayer, and hope filled the room. In another hospital, the relative of a member of Pastor Damian’s church was also dying. His hardened heart had led to a hard life, and his disheveled family lived in the wake of his poor decisions and misdeeds. The differences in the two atmospheres reflected the contrasts in how each had lived.

Those who fail to consider where they’re headed in life often find themselves stuck in uncomfortable, undesirable, and lonely places. Proverbs 14:12 notes that “there is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” Young or old, sick or well, wealthy or impoverished—it’s not too late to reexamine our path. Where will it lead? Does it honor God? Does it help or disrupt others? Is it the best path for a believer in Jesus?

Choices do matter. And the God of heaven will help us make the best choices as we turn to Him through His Son, Jesus, who said, “Come to me, . . . and I will give you rest” (MATTHEW 11:28). - ARTHUR JACKSON

‘숨겨진 인물들(Hidden Figures)’이라는 책은 존 글렌의 우주 비행을 위한 준비 과정을 다루고 있습니다. 1962년 당시의 컴퓨터는 새로운 발명품으로 결함의 여지를 지니고 있었습니다. 컴퓨터를 신뢰할 수 없었던 글렌은 우주선 발사를 위한 계산이 염려가 되었습니다. 그는 뒤쪽 사무실에서 일하는 어느 머리 좋은 여성이라면 계산을 해낼 수 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 그 여성을 신뢰했던 글렌은 “그 사람이 계산 결과가 맞다고 하면 나는 언제든 갈 수 있다.”고 말했습니다.

READY TO GO FOR GOD

The book Hidden Figures recounts preparations for John Glenn’s flight into space. Computers were newfangled inventions in 1962, subject to glitches. Glenn didn’t trust them and worried about calculations for the launch. He knew one brainy woman in the back room could run the numbers. He trusted her. “If she says the numbers are good,” Glenn said, “I’m ready to go.”

Katherine Johnson was a teacher and mother of three. She loved Jesus and served in her church. God had blessed Katherine with a remarkable mind. NASA tapped her in the late 1950s to help with the space program. She was Glenn’s “brainy woman,” one of the “human computers” they hired at the time.

We may not be called to be brilliant mathematicians, but God calls us to other things: “To each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it” (EPHESIANS 4:7). We’re to “live a life worthy of the calling” we’ve received (V. 1). We’re part of one body, in which “each part does its work” (V. 16).

Katherine Johnson’s calculations confirmed the course trajectory. Glenn’s launch into orbit was like “hitting a bull’s-eye.” But this was just one of Katherine’s callings. Remember, she was called also to be a mother, teacher, and church worker. We might ask ourselves what God has called us to, whether big or small. Are we “ready to go,” exercising the grace-gifts He’s bestowed, living “a life worthy of [our] calling” (V. 1)? - KENNETH PETERSEN

예수님과 한 집에서

도로시는 루비로 만든 슬리퍼의 뒤축을 두드리며 “집처럼 편한 곳은 없어.”라고 말했습니다. ‘오즈의 마법사’에서 도로시와 토토는 그렇게 두드리기만 하면 오즈에서 캔자스에 있는 집으로 마법의 이동을 할 수 있었습니다.

유감스럽게도 이 세상 사람 모두에게 그런 루비 슬리퍼가 다 주어지지는 않습니다. 많은 사람이 도로시처럼 집에 가고 싶어도 자기가 진정 속할 수 있는 그런 집을 찾기는 말처럼 쉽지가 않습니다.

매우 유동적이고 일시적인 이 세상을 살다 보면 우리가 정말로 속하는 그런 곳이 과연 있을까 하는 단절감이 생깁니다. 우리 마음속 깊은 곳에서 생겨나는 이 느낌을 C.S. 루이스는 이렇게 표현했습니다. “이 세상 어느 것으로도 채울 수 없는 어떤 갈망이 내 안에 있다면, 그 이유를 가장 잘 설명해 주는 것은 아마도 내가 원래 다른 세계에서 살도록 지어졌기 때문일 것이다.”

예수님은 십자가에 달리시기 전날 밤, 친구들에게 이렇게 말씀하시며 그 집에 대해 확인해 주셨습니다: “내 아버지 집에 거할 곳이 많도다 그렇지 않으면 너희에게 일렀으리라 내가 너희를 위하여 거처를 예비하러 가노라” (요한복음 14:2). 우리를 반갑게 맞아주고 사랑해줄 집을 말씀하신 것입니다.

그러나 우리는 지금도 그런 집을 가질 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님의 교회라는 한 가족에 속해 있으며, 그리스도 안에서 형제 자매들과 함께 공동체로 살고 있습니다. 예수님이 우리가 사모하는 집으로 데려가시는 그날까지 우리는 주님의 평화와 기쁨 가운데 살 수 있습니다. 우리는 언제나 예수님과 한 집에 있습니다.

AT HOME IN JESUS

“There’s no place like home,” says Dorothy, clicking the heels of her ruby slippers. In The Wizard of Oz, that was all it took to magically transport Dorothy and Toto from Oz back to their home in Kansas.

Unfortunately, there aren’t enough ruby slippers for everyone. Although many share Dorothy’s longing for home, finding that home—a place to belong—is sometimes easier said than done.

One of the consequences of living in a highly mobile, transient world is a sense of detachment—wondering if we’ll ever find a place where we truly belong. This feeling may also reflect a deeper reality, expressed by C. S. Lewis: “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

The night before the cross, Jesus assured His friends of that home, saying, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” (JOHN 14:2). A home where we are welcomed and loved.

Yet we can be at home now too. We’re part of a family—God’s church, and we live in community with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Until the day Jesus takes us to the home our hearts long for, we can live in His peace and joy. We’re always home with Him. - BILL CROWDER

마닐라에서 ‘지프니’(필리핀의 대중교통 수단 중 하나)를 운전하는 랜도는 노점에 서서 커피를 마시고 있었습니다. 코로나 감염병 봉쇄가 풀리자 매일 통근하는 사람들이 돌아왔습니다. 그는 생각했습니다. ‘오늘은 스포츠 행사까지 있으니 손님이 더 많겠네. 그동안 못 번 돈을 이제 벌게 될 거야. 드디어 이제 걱정 안 해도 되겠어.’

이렇게 운전을 시작하려는데 가까운 곳의 벤치에 로니가 앉아있는 것이 보였습니다. 거리를 청소하는 로니는 괴로운 표정을 지으며 무언가 말하려고 하는 것 같았습니다. 그러나 랜도에게 이런 생각이 들었습니다. ‘하지만 일분 일초가 중요해. 승객이 많을수록 돈을 더 버는데 여기서 지체할 수 없어.’ 그러나 그는 로니에게 다가가라고 하시는 하나님의 음성을 들으며 순종했습니다.

예수님은 걱정을 하지 않는 것이 얼마나 어려운지를 잘 아시고(마태복음 6:25-27) 하늘에 계신 아버지께서 우리에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지 정확히 아신다고 말씀하십니다(32절). 우리에게 염려하지 말고 하나님을 믿고 그분이 우리에게 원하시는 일에 열중하라고 일깨워 주십니다(31-33절). 하나님의 뜻을 받아들이고 순종할 때 우리는 “오늘 있다가 내일 아궁이에 던져질 들풀도 입히시는” 하나님 아버지께서 모든 창조물을 돌보시듯 우리를 그의 뜻대로 돌보실 것을 확신할 수 있습니다(30절).

거리의 청소부 로니는 랜도와의 대화 끝에 그리스도를 영접하는 기도를 했습니다. 랜도는 말했습니다. “하나님은 그날 여전히 많은 승객들을 보내주셨어요. 하나님은 내 필요는 하나님께서 채우실 테니 그냥 하나님을 따르기만 하라고 일깨워 주셨어요.”

GOD KNOWS OUR NEEDS

Lando, a jeepney (a form of public transport in the Philippines) driver in Manila, gulped down coffee at a roadside stall. Daily commuters were back again after the Covid-19 lockdowns.
And the sports event today means more passengers, he thought. I’ll get back lost income. Finally, I can stop worrying.

He was about to start driving when he spotted Ronnie on a bench nearby. The street sweeper looked troubled, like he needed to talk. But every minute counts, Lando thought. The more passengers, the more income. I can’t linger. But he sensed that God wanted him to approach Ronnie, so he did.

Jesus understood how difficult it is not to worry (MATTHEW 6:25-27), so He assures us that our heavenly Father knows exactly what we need (V. 32). We’re reminded not to be anxious, but to trust Him and devote ourselves to doing what He wants us to do (VV. 31-33). As we embrace and obey His purposes, we can have confidence that our Father who “clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire” will provide for us according to His will—just as He provides for all creation (V. 30).

Because of Lando’s conversation with Ronnie, the street sweeper eventually prayed to become a believer in Christ. “And God still provided enough passengers that day,” Lando shared. “He reminded me my needs were His concern, mine was simply to follow Him.”

질서의 하나님

세스는 약장에 있는 약들을 모두 찾아서 삼켰습니다. 망가지고 무질서한 가정에서 자란 그의 삶은 엉망이었습니다. 엄마는 아버지가 스스로 목숨을 끊을 때까지 늘 아버지에게 맞으며 살았습니다. 이제 세스도 자신의 인생을 “그냥 끝내고” 싶었습니다. 그런데 문득 ‘내가 죽으면 어디로 가지?’ 하는 생각이 머리를 스쳤습니다. 하나님의 은혜로 세스는 그날 죽지 않았습니다. 그리고 때가 되어 친구와 성경공부를 하고 나서 예수님을 자신의 구주로 영접했습니다. 세스를 하나님께로 이끈 것 중에는 창조물 속에서 아름다움과 질서를 본 것도 있었습니다. 그는 말합니다. “나는... 그냥 아름답기만 한 사물들을 봅니다. 누군가가 이 모든 것을 만든 것이죠.”

창세기 1장에서 우리는 하나님이 실제로 만물을 창조하시는 것을 봅니다. 그리고 “땅이 혼돈”(2절)했지만 하나님은 그 무질서에 질서를 가져다주셨습니다. 그는 “빛과 어두움을 나누시고”(4절), 바다 가운데 땅을 두셨으며(10절), 식물과 생물을 그 “종류대로” 만드셨습니다(11-12, 21, 24-25절). “하늘과 땅을 창조하시고 만물을 제자리에 두신”(이사야 45:18) 하나님은 그리스도께 헌신하는 인생들에게 세스가 찾은 평화와 질서를 계속 가져다주십니다.

인생이 혼란스럽고 어려울 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 “무질서의 하나님이 아니시요 오직 화평의 하나님”(고린도전서 14:33)이심을 찬양합시다. 오늘 하나님께 부르짖어 주님만이 주실 수 있는 아름다움과 질서를 달라고 간구합시다.

THE GOD OF ORDER

Seth took all the medications he could find in the medicine cabinet. Raised in a family filled with brokenness and disorder, his life was a mess. His mom was regularly abused by his father until his dad took his own life. Now Seth wanted to “just end” his own. But then a thought came to mind, Where do I go when I die? By God’s grace, Seth didn’t die that day. And in time, after studying the Bible with a friend, he received Jesus as his Savior. Part of what drew Seth to God was seeing the beauty and order in creation. He said, “I . . . see things that are just beautiful. Someone made all this.”

In Genesis 1, we read of the God who indeed created all things. And although “the earth was complete chaos” (V. 2 NRSV), He brought order out of disorder. He “separated the light from the darkness” (V. 4), placed land amid the seas (V. 10), and made plants and creatures according to their “kinds” (VV. 11-12, 21, 24-25). The One who “created the heavens and earth and put everything in place” (ISAIAH 45:18 NLT) continues to, as Seth discovered, bring peace and order to lives surrendered to Christ.

Life can be chaotic and challenging. Praise God that He’s not “a God of disorder but of peace” (1 CORINTHIANS 14:33). Let’s call out to Him today and ask Him to help us find the beauty and order He alone provides.

하나님의 평화의 대리인들

사회정의에 대해 관심이 많았던 노라는 평화적인 시위에 참여했습니다. 계획한대로 시위는 침묵으로 진행되었습니다. 시위대는 침묵의 힘을 보여주며 시내를 걸었습니다.

그러자 두 대의 버스가 와서 섰습니다. 다른 도시에서 선동가들이 도착한 것입니다. 곧 이어 폭동이 일어났습니다. 노라는 실망하여 그 자리를 떠났습니다. 그들의 좋은 의도가 의미를 잃은 것 같았습니다.

바울 사도가 예루살렘 성전에 갔을 때 그를 반대하던 사람들이 그를 보았습니다. “아시아로부터”(사도행전 21:27) 온 그들은 예수님이 그들의 삶의 방식을 위협한다고 여겼습니다. 그들은 바울에 대해 거짓 소문을 퍼트리며 곧 소동을 일으켰습니다(28-29절). 그들은 무리를 지어 바울을 성전에서 끌어내리고 때렸습니다. 그러자 병사들이 달려왔습니다.

바울은 체포를 당하면서 무리에게 할 말이 있다고 천부장에게 요청했습니다(37-38절). 허락을 받은 바울이 그들의 언어로 말을 하니 무리가 놀라 주목했습니다(40절). 이런 식으로 바울은 폭동을 반전시켜 죽은 종교로부터 구원받은 자신의 이야기를 전하는 기회로 삼았습니다(22:2-21).

GOD’S AGENTS OF PEACE

Nora went to the peaceful protest because she felt strongly about the issue of justice. As planned, the demonstration was silent. The protestors walked in powerful quietness through the downtown area.

Then two buses pulled up. Agitators had arrived from out of town. A riot soon broke out. Heartbroken, Nora left. It seemed their good intentions were fruitless.

When the apostle Paul visited the temple at Jerusalem, people who opposed Paul saw him there. They were “from the province of Asia” (ACTS 21:27) and viewed Jesus as a threat to their way of life. Shouting lies and rumors about Paul, they quickly stirred up trouble (VV. 28-29). A mob dragged Paul from the temple and beat him. Soldiers came running.

As he was being arrested, Paul asked the Roman commander if he could address the crowd (VV. 37-38). When permission was granted, he spoke to the crowd in their own language, surprising them and seizing their attention (V. 40). And just like that, Paul had turned a riot into an opportunity to share his story of rescue from dead religion (22:2-21).

Some people love violence and division. Don’t lose heart. They will not win. God is looking for courageous believers to share His light and peace with our desperate world. What seems like a crisis might be your opportunity to show someone God’s love.

노래하는 푸른 초장

나는 개들과 대화하는 듯 보이는 시어머니와 가끔 그 능력에 대해 즐겁게 농담을 나누곤 합니다. 시어머니는 개들이 짖으면 사랑하는 마음으로 알아듣고 대답해줍니다. 시어머니를 비롯한 세상 모든 개 주인들은 누구나 개들의 웃는 소리라면 귀 기울여 듣고 싶을 것입니다. 과학자들은 개, 소, 여우, 물개, 앵무새와 같은 많은 동물들이 “놀이로 내는 소리”, 곧 웃음소리를 갖고 있다는 것을 발견했습니다. 이들이 내는 소리를 식별할 수 있다면 사람들이 볼 때 싸우는 것 같아도 어떤 경우엔 장난치는 것임을 알 수 있습니다.

동물들이 웃음과 기쁨을 표현하는 것을 보면, 세상의 다른 피조물들이 그들만의 방식으로 하나님을 찬양하는 모습이 어떨지 기분 좋게 유추해볼 수 있습니다. 자기의 주변을 둘러보던 다윗 왕의 눈에는 “작은 산들이 기쁨으로 띠를 띠었고” 초장과 골짜기는 “즐거이 외치고” 있었습니다(시편 65:12-13). 다윗은 하나님이 땅을 보살피시고 풍요롭게 하셔서 아름다움과 양식을 공급하신다는 것을 알았습니다.

우리 주변의 모든 것이 문자 그대로 “노래하는” 것은 아니지만, 그들 모두는 하나님의 창조의 산물임을 증거하며 우리에게 소리 내어 주님을 찬양하자고 부릅니다. “온 땅”에 속한 우리도 “주의 놀라우심을 경외하며” “기쁨의 노래”로 화답하기를 바랍니다(8절). 하나님은 그것을 다 들으시며 아신다는 것을 우리는 믿을 수 있습니다.

SINGING MEADOWS

I’ve often affectionately joked with my mother-in-law about her ability to talk to her dogs. She responds to their barks with loving understanding. Perhaps now she and dog owners everywhere will also listen for their canine pals to laugh. Scientists have discovered that many animals, including dogs, cows, foxes, seals, and parakeets, all have “vocal play signals”—otherwise known as laughter. Identifying these accompanying sounds helps distinguish an animal’s play behaviors from what might otherwise look like fighting to a human observer.

That animals express laughter and joy gives us a delightful glimmer of what it might look like for other parts of creation to praise God in their own way. As King David looked over his surroundings, it seemed to him “the hills [were] clothed with gladness” and the meadows and valleys were “[shouting] for joy” (PSALM 65:12-13). David recognized that God had cared for and enriched the land, providing both beauty and sustenance.

Even though our physical surroundings don’t “sing” in a literal way, they bear witness to God’s active work in His creation and, in turn, invite us to give praise to Him with our voices. May
we—as part of the “whole earth”—be “filled with awe at [His] wonders” and respond to Him with “songs of joy” (V. 8). We can trust that He’ll hear and understand them.
